hey youtube mr terry here back once again for another react video today i'm reacting to another oversimplified video this one was recommended to me this one is about hitler um looks like there's two parts to this so i'll make sure to do a follow-up on part two so um we'll get started here in just a second now make sure i always say this at the beginning of these videos to you that if you like the video make sure you give the original creators they're due by going to the link um which i'll post below which will be to the original video and with that you can um like subscribe give them just just credit because um really i just react and talk to it so they're really the the brilliant minds behind these videos so we'll make sure they get their credit all right we'll go ahead and start this and let's see what they did for hitler it's like we're starting with baby hitler this is a famous photo of him i like to show this photo in my class and my classes when i first just start talking about hitler and with no context at all just hey look look at this baby and you know they go oh cute you know whatever and then and then i usually on the next slide or whatever put a you know adult picture of hitler and they're like oh whoa and you're like you know what it is kind of interesting point because sometimes it's hard to imagine certain people as babies that everyone was once you know a baby like like this is and so uh you know um they're just a baby right they they have no um ill will towards anything or you know you wouldn't think any predispositions uh to anything like that but interesting you always you know you think everyone was once a baby and something obviously happens between being a baby and then to when you're you know an adult um and for hitler i'm sure they'll be explaining kind of how his you know upbringing maybe made him the person he's going to be so let's go and check this out and let's get started right now look at this baby so gentle so innocent you'd think this child would grow up to become a good man an honest man well think again hitler was born adolphus hitler in 1889 in a small town in austria-hungary his father a louis schickelgruber was born out of wedlock but eventually changed his name to that of his stepfather becoming aloise hitler alois was a mid-level austrian customs officer not really rolling in cash but certainly rolling a woman he married a rich older lady but then immediately started having affairs including one with a much younger house servant a few years later he left his sick wife to be with his mistress but since the catholic church didn't allow divorce at the time he couldn't marry her so he waited for his old wife to die and had a child in the meantime then his wife died so he married his mistress and had another child but then his new wife got sick so he employed his much much younger cousin clara to take care of her then when his new wife died he immediately got clara his cousin pregnant and then married her in that order you rock star clara and eloise had three children together who all tragically died while in infancy so when the fourth child adolf came along clara spoiled him rotten the hitlers had two women and the family moved around a few times meaning adolf had to attend five different elementary schools adele's father was strict quick to anger and took most of it out on the eldest son until he had enough and ran away at the age of 14 leaving seven-year-old adolf to do most of the chores and get berated by his father the result was a difficult relationship with his dad well daddy issues right you see that in a lot of stories of these people stalin kind of similar there too so um yeah nothing real uh surprising right now well he was super attached to his mother who worried over him and his health excessively hitler did well in school at first his grades were good and his teachers praised him he was popular with the other kids and enjoyed gathering them together to play war games he also loved reading and particularly liked stories about cowboys and indians as he grew older though he started to get into trouble he was caught smoking once organized a raid on a local orchard tormented his pro-austrian religion teacher with symbolic gestures displaying his allegiance to the idea of united germanic people under a greater german state in defiance of habsburg austria you know the usual all of this enraged adult's father who punished him severely the area of austria-hungary that hitler lived in was once part of the german confederation and many of the people who lived there consider themselves to be german adolph tended to just go against whatever his father said and since his father was an austrian public official hitler got big into german nationalism this enraged adult's father who punished him severely around this time a family tragedy struck his six-year-old brother whom he loved a lot died of measles when adolf was 10 and was buried in the cemetery just across from their home around this time neighbors reported a change in the young boy strange behaviors such as talking to trees and staying up late staring at the stars from the cemetery walls he lost interest in religion and his school grades started to decline which enraged his father who punished him severely it also didn't help that he had just entered high school and the cool city boys treated him like a rural peasant he had to repeat a grade and had little interest in most school subjects instead spending his time reading and drawing which he was quite good at one day his father said son someday you'll be a big balls public official like me and adolf replied no father i'm going to become an artist and soar high above the clouds with the eagles this enraged his father but by this time he was an old ass man so he just sort of let it go and then died of a lung hemorrhage hitler just about passed his final semester and celebrated in the typical way by getting blackout drunk and wiping his ass with a certificate however he didn't take the story final exam instead just dropping out the now 16 year old boy was unemployed without much purpose in life and for the next three years he stayed that way he spent most of his time at the opera with his only friend august kubisek kubizek later wrote his memories of the young hitler and said he was passionately interested in many things felt he was in many ways better than others his age was quick to anger just like his father and an incredible speaker once he was ranting when he was 18 he said a very sad goodbye to his mother and went to vienna to take the entrance exam for art school he failed soon after he had to return home his mother was sick and her health was rapidly deteriorating hitler stayed by her side and when she eventually died the family doctor said he had never seen someone so overwhelmed with grief as hitler was then hitler returned to vienna you could see there's a lot of um events going on in his life that at his age are um like that they can make a huge difference um there's a lot happening here again going back to just the the nature of his father and his promiscuous nature different women and things like that and then his mother and having all these step siblings and then of course just the the kind of physical nature of that relationship between his uh between him and his father and then you know uh seeing these other traumatic experiences um dad dying and then he losing interest you know these type of behaviors outside of the school of course affects student as a teacher you know you see this stuff all the time you know that they can have these and when they mount up um you never know what how a person is going to react to that and that's definitely you know happening here so now it looks like he's now basically um on his own right i mean his his parents are dead he's dropped out of school he's trying to somewhat make a life for himself he doesn't have a lot of options it looks like here so um kind of a drifter right right now a very susceptible time right still hoping to find a career in the arts but he never did instead without parental support hitler ended up on the streets now in his early 20s he spent a few rough years living in and out of homeless shelters making what little he could from selling postcards he painted it's hard to pinpoint exactly when and how hitler's extreme ideological beliefs formed but his time in vienna would have certainly played a role anti-semitism was widespread in the city the mayor whom hitler supported was an outspoken anti-semite there were many right-wing anti-semitically took a keen interest in he bought into the conspiracy theories and became a firm believer in the idea that there are many races in constant struggle with one another the purest of which were the german aryan people and the worst of which he believed were jews since austria-hungary was a multi-ethnic empire full of lesser races hitler wasn't a fan so when he was 24 he moved to munich in germany to avoid doing military service and for one more year he was a drifter on the streets until something huge happened in 1914 long-standing tensions in europe erupted into the first world war crowds across europe celebrated the news within days hitler volunteered for the german army the war gave him so i didn't know that he had moved to berlin to avoid military duty because they're saying this is before the war just anticipating i mean germany was on the brink of war um even with france on in some years leading up just in a few years leading up to uh um to 1914 and when the war actually breaks out but definitely knew that he had he had volunteered for it but he had to know that he had avoided it so that's i don't know if that's conflicting um how much truth there is to that go ahead if you if you know more about that um let me know especially about him trying to avoid war early on because you know we all know and a lot of people know that he does he does volunteer for the austrian military and gets turned down um but yeah i didn't know that he was trying to avoid that urge that we have evidence of that that he was actively trying to avoid war um thus leaving vienna to to um to germany from a purpose in life his fellow soldiers gave him friendship and brotherhood despite the horrors of war hitler considered it to be the best time of his life he was reportedly a brave soldier and was awarded the iron cross first class he was also very lucky and had many close encounters with death his luck ran out in 1916 however when an artillery shell injured his leg he went back to germany to recover and was outraged to find a general apathetic anti-war attitude among the exhausted and hungry german populace with the war turning against germany he returned to the front lines but was temporarily blinded by a british gas attack in 1918 a month later still recovering in hospital hitler learned of germany's defeat and surrender i heard an interesting like hypothesis about the effect of the gas attack that hitler had had uh encountered now a lot of people know gas attacks um about the most horrifying part of world war one you know it was something that was again seemed like the worst way you could possibly die you know what i mean because it's a slow very painful death and that's a psychological weapon as well now i'd heard this kind of hypothesis before about not just how gas affects people that are gassed in a war but specifically what effect it might have had on adolf hitler and there's just like this i had heard that you know the way gas attacks can work too is they they uh really can mess with your brain um with him being you know hospitalized in here taken out of the war and put into this the effects were great he was blinded for i think weeks and even to a point where he was blinded a lot longer i believe than he should have been which i don't think is super uncommon um because you at you you add the uh the stress of war and the psychological toll that that takes and then add something chemical like that and you could have like a recipe for disaster because they were saying that his his blindness lasted again longer than it probably should have um so it may have entered a stage of what we call hysterical blindness where there's nothing really wrong with your eyes or whatever but you have this psychological effect going on but the other thing that i had heard heard hypothesized that the the gas attack could have affected his brain chemistry in a way that made him more violent and irritable um after that now again is that more tied to just the effects of the war or was it actually influenced by the actual chemical attacks that he had suffered i don't know but i've heard that hypothesize if you're interested in that i'm sure you could look more on the web and things like that um for sources hopefully reliable sources if there are any on that but it's an interesting thing to think about that the gas attack might have like broke his brain in a way because one thing we know for sure is hitler is going to be a very different person after the war than he was before the war i mean he found his place in the military which he had no place in life before this but in the in the military he kind of probably becomes radicalized too he again finds a place um amongst this this this people gives him purpose it creates it creates his nationalism uh but yeah and then the violent side of course that's gonna be after the war um you just see he's a very very different person and that's common for anybody going to war a lot of people return from war very different but people don't turn into hitler you know what i mean so some interesting things to look into if you're more interested in this about his what effect the war might have had on him another thing you could look at uh if you saw the world war one video which was mussolini uh benito mussolini from italy had kind of an interesting situation too as he was before the war somebody that was a pacifist kind of an anti-war person he comes out of the war a very very different person so it's not uncommon but yeah let's go ahead and continue the terms of the peace treaty were tough on germany it had to pay a lot of money and lose a lot of soldiers these conditions weakened germany and humiliated the german people europe's borders changed after the war too new countries were formed out of russia's lost territory austria-hungary was dissolved and there was one big new country splitting germany into two hitler seeing the country he loved humiliated like this said that hatred grew in him for those responsible by which he meant communists and jews who he believed had stabbed germany in the back by spreading dissent and anti-war propaganda he did not take the news well at all he was hospitalized again like we had said and during that um had yeah had heard the news about this and i think for some people that might be just you know i'm really happy that the war is over um but he took it like personal almost maybe i don't know if it's this idea that had he wasted you know his his time there because they said when he a couple years before that or whatever had had had that injury and you know the war was again very brutal and he saw the public support wasn't good he took that as offensive too he he was not very happy um about this and of course finding the scapegoats which again communists and jews being the two big ones and of course two of the big people that he's going to really go after when he does get into power he's really going to focus it on these groups and make it you know he think or make it easy in a way to to blame those because during hard times people really like to turn to scapegoats as a way to deflect in a simple fashion any kind of blame or responsibility or anything like that so all right looks like it's almost over let's just finish up here okay great well definitely do the part two video um i'll do that here shortly so good start so far i learned a lot especially on the really his really uh early family situation um i didn't know he had so many step siblings and i knew a little bit about his father and he was you know pretty abusive and and that sort of thing and um but yeah a little few more details there that again just add more and more to the rough pretty rough upbringing that that he ends up having um so anyway all right well um i will like i said the beginning of the video leave a link to the original video from simplified so you make sure and give them respect and the credit that they are due and hopefully if you like this you'll join us for part two which we'll do shortly so if you have any other suggestions for other videos i should watch of course leave those in the comments i'll try to look at those um do the best that i can if i feel it you know works well for this kind of scenario so again thanks for um watching and we hope to see you soon see ya
