hello you absolute legends minecraft speedrunning has had an interesting history for many years it really wasn't taken all that seriously at least in the western hemisphere until fairly recently it was primarily the japanese that would speedrun this game having their own community separated from speedrunning's central hub but suddenly within the last two years minecraft has taken over becoming the most popular game to speedrun in the entire world it's pretty crazy how fast it has risen in popularity and i have to admit that even as someone who likes to think they're pretty in touch with the speed running community as a whole the rise of minecraft caught me off guard over the years i had seen various videos of people beating minecraft as quickly as possible but i didn't quite understand the appeal on its surface minecraft doesn't seem like an ideal candidate for this type of competition the movement is somewhat clunky and basic and i would wager that most people that play the game either have never reached the end or simply don't care to the heart of minecraft is the player's ability to create their own unique world not to beat the game necessarily what i have come to learn is that there is a certain depth to minecraft that very few games possess given that there are literally hundreds of different items you can craft the problem of how to beat the game as quickly as possible is an extremely complex one with an unimaginable amount of different combinations finding the optimal path is a very difficult thing to do more than anything else speedrunning minecraft relies on the player's ability to think quickly and solve problems every single attempt we are thrust into a brand new universe and it is our primary objective to figure out how to best make use of the materials we are given new strategies are being discovered constantly and given the almost limitless possibilities i doubt this process will slow down anytime soon recently a huge milestone was broken with the speedrunner d-max beating the game in 19 minutes and 36 seconds the first person to beat the game in less than 20 minutes in the 1.9 to 1.15 random seed category as i've learned more about the game over the past month i've come to realize why the game appeals to so many and what better time than now to take a look at why minecraft is shaping up to become the most popular speedrunning game of all time in this video you will learn about the thought processes that top level players bring into each attempt we will learn how the overarching strategy has developed over time we will take a look at this new monumental record and the factors that enabled d-max to beat the game quicker than anyone else had before if you do end up enjoying this video please remember to subscribe as it really does have a positive impact on this channel i really hope you enjoy [Music] now before we go on this video is sponsored by audible.com and this is a sponsor that i'm very passionate about because for me personally audiobooks have had a profoundly positive impact on my life audible is the best place to find audio books and i think whenever you have the opportunity you should be listening to something that either inspires you or at least teaches you something new it really doesn't matter if you're exercising commuting or just want to unwind put on an audio book and you'll be much better for it audible offers a 30-day trial which is awesome because you can try an audio book completely free and the one i'm going to recommend is can't hurt me by david goggins it's an extremely inspiring story and one that everyone should listen to in my opinion if you do want some motivation this book could change your life in order to get this book for free simply visit audible.com kylejobs or text karl jobs to 500 500 or to make it easy just click the link in the description minecraft has two main categories which are set seed glitchless and random seed glitchless set seed means that the player enters a specific world of their choosing which should be the same for everyone this is a world that has been shown to be the quickest to complete random seed means that the player will enter a completely random world with no knowledge beforehand this is the most popular way to speedrun the game and in my opinion is the most interesting this is very different to traditional speedrunning where players grind the exact same geometry over and over again in random seed runs it is problem solving that takes center stage as players need to think quickly and figure out the best way to negotiate through a world they've never seen before in speed runs players have two main quests the acquisition of blaze rods and ender pearls which they need to create isa vendor for the end portals along the way they also need to acquire food tools and beds the reason for getting tools and food is fairly obvious and beds are needed as they are one of the easiest ways to deal massive damage to the ender dragon this is because when you attempt to sleep on a bed in either the end or the nether the bed will explode causing huge damage to its immediate surroundings speed runs in the random seed category are sorted based on the version you choose to play pre 1.9 1.9 to 1.15 and 1.16 plus while there are a ton of small differences between each of the versions the main thing that sets these three subcategories apart is the way in which players collect ender pearls for the majority of minecraft's history players would farm pearls from endermen which they would hunt at night and if you watch runs in the pre 1.9 category you will see players creating epic towers in order to quickly farm and then respawn mobs but this changed when 1.14 the village and pillage update was released this update completely revamped the villager trading mechanic and not only could you now trade with villagers for ender pearls but you could do it reasonably quickly and with less effort this shifted the matter of speedruns and ultimately led to a split in categories then of course as i covered in my last video 1.16 was released which introduced piglet bartering which enables players to get pearls even faster again with the change of ender pearl meta a new category was born so with pre 1.9 players hunt enderman with 1.9 to 1.15 players trade with villagers and in 1.16 players barter with piglens i plan on covering each of these different version categories in due time but for the sake of this video we will only be covering this new world record by dmax which sits in the 1.9 to 1.15 category whenever i'm learning about a new game i'd like to start at the end and work my way back understanding the end goal puts everything else into context and allows us to have a good grasp on exactly why things are done the way they are in a speed run for example we know that in order to reach the end we need to find blaze rods and ender pearls to create isa vendor but what do we need in order to find blaze rods well one thing is for certain and that is a nether portal in order to reach the nether nether portals are constructed from blocks of obsidian and require at minimum 10 blocks obsidian is found where lava meets water and it is an extremely hard material the only way you can mine it is with a diamond pickaxe thankfully though you don't actually need to mine it as there is a much easier and faster method of creating a portal all you need is a bucket filled with water and access to lava which you can find in caves or in randomly generated lava pools in order to activate the portal you need to expose it to fire which is best done using a flint and steel you can also use wood and wait for it to catch fire due to the heat of the lava but this is a much slower process in total the bucket and flint and steel requires four iron ingots there are many ways to acquire iron ingots and this is where the complexity of minecraft starts to seep into speed runs you can mine iron ore but this is probably the least efficient way to gather ingus you would have to create a forge and then spend time smelting it down while you're waiting there aren't many options for making good use of your time iron ingots can also be found in desert temples this is actually a pretty good way to attain it as these temples also contain tnt which is extremely important depending on which overall strategy you opt to use villagers are also a good source of iron you can find it in chests or you can kill a golem that drops three to five ingots villages are great because they also contain food and beds but a relatively new meta involves the use of ocean strats and ocean travel is something that people are placing more and more importance on as time goes by the key importance of ocean travel is that it is much faster than running on land and one thing we need to keep in mind throughout this entire speed run is that the stronghold we need to find to reach the end is very far away from where we spawn strongholds are located in areas called stronghold rings and the first strongholds that we can encounter are located between 1408 to 2688 blocks from origin hypothetically if the entire world was flat and you didn't have to eat it would take around three and a half minutes of traveling via sprint jumping just to reach the beginning of the first ring but of course the world isn't flat and is usually marred with mountainous terrain slowing things down dramatically sprint jumping is also one of the most exhausting things you can do meaning that you will have to consume huge amounts of food traveling by bow to superior in almost every way it is faster than sprint jumping doesn't cause exhaustion and allows you to travel at max speed consistently without being impaired by obstacles it is an obvious choice but in saying that you will still need to find iron but luckily the waters of minecraft are littered with shipwrecks that not only provide us with iron ingots but also contain food emeralds and treasure maps in d-max's world record run he spawned right next to an ocean his first priority was attaining wood to craft a crafting table basic tools and a boat he then immediately initiates water travel in search of a shipwreck after traveling for over a minute he reaches a shipwreck and finds enough iron for a bucket and flint and steel along with some emeralds which will be useful later once a particular direction has been chosen and ground has been covered it's really important to keep traveling in that same direction the stronghold is too far away to be zig-zagging around the map and this is where a lot of the luck aspects lie on your way to the stronghold ring you want to stumble upon key structures in order to gather the necessary resources and you more or less need these structures to be on or around your chosen path just after looting the ship d-max encounters land and in order to keep moving in the same direction must ditch his boat and proceed on foot he then quickly mined some gravel in order to get a flint to be used for the flint and steel he needs to light the nether portal further along he encounters a village where he quickly gathers food and beds beyond the village he finds a lava pool which is the perfect opportunity to build a nether portal one thing to note is that blaze rides are always farmed first this is because the villager trading strategy to get pearls can only be done on day two so either way you need to wait until night time before you can sleep so ideally you want to find resources and iron travel to the nether for blaze rods and return before nightfall on the first day after quickly creating his nether portal d-max checks his coordinates and realizes just how far he has already traveled at 1 100 blocks from origin he is only 300 shy of the stronghold ring and isn't even 5 minutes into the run this is already extremely good pace but things begin to get very crazy very quickly all right so five entry with 1 000 holy [ __ ] this might be a good run actually i mean we still need a temple forces and a savannah village but um that means the force is there his nether portal spawns directly on top of a fortress you really can't get better luck than this and many runs end right here because a fortress is nowhere to be found d-max immediately finds the spawner and farms blazers as they appear each wave is separated by a gap of 10 to 40 seconds and during this downtime players will place and mine gravel in order to farm flint we need four flint in order to create two fletching tables which will be used later in the run speedrunners will collect seven to eight blaze rods depending on how much risk they want to incorporate into the run we need to use one of the rods to craft a brewing stand which will again be used later and six of the rods will be used to make blaze powder ultimately allowing us to create 12 eyes of ender if you leave the nether with the bare minimum of rods this can end up backfiring on you isa vendor are used to locate the stronghold when you throw them they will float in the air pointing in the nearest stronghold's direction but each time you throw an eye it has a 20 chance of breaking so usually at least one eye will end up breaking on you end portals can generate with eyes already placed in the portal blocks in fact each block has a 10 chance of containing an eye so most runs will have at least one already there but if you rely on that a certain percentage of runs are going to fail ultimately it depends on how optimized players want their runs to be and how much time they are willing to put in grinding for that ideal scenario in his run d-max wanted to be safe so he collected eight rods essentially removing all risk returning to the overworld with blaze rods in hand we now only need to obtain ender pearls the current strategy used by top players is to purchase pearls from a villager cleric pearls are expensive however and you will need a ton of emeralds in order to buy enough the main way to get enough emeralds is to trade sticks with villager fletchers and you are going to need a lot of sticks at minimum you need 2 752 sticks which is 43 stacks you can get 43 stacks of sticks from 21.5 stacks of planks and you can get 21.5 stacks of planks from just over 5 stacks of logs that is a massive amount of logs and if you were to collect logs in the traditional way which is by using an axe to cut down trees it would take a long time to get enough back in march of last year when dream set a new world record of 32 minutes and 21 seconds he spent a full eight minutes cutting down trees a much quicker method is to use tnt to blow up trees in dark forests or houses made of wood in villages the only issue with this method is acquiring tnt to begin with which is done by disarming the pressure plate at the bottom of desert temples and taking the tnt beneath this means that we do rely on finding yet another structure d-max was incredibly lucky on his run after returning from the nether and continuing towards the stronghold ring he finds a desert temple with both a dark forest and a small village nearby he collects the tnt and heads to the forest to begin farming logs during this process night begins to fall and he sleeps at the earliest opportunity in order to bring about day two once enough wood has been collected he makes his way to the village the village is tiny but luckily there are three villagers already there for optimal trading we need two fletchers and one cleric so as soon as he enters the village d-max breaks two composters which removes the existing professions of the villages he then places two fletching tables and a brewing stand which will convert the now unemployed villagers into fletchers and a cleric now the trading process begins he trades sticks with the fletchers to get emeralds and buys redstone and lapis from the cleric in order to level them up the cleric needs to reach expert level in order to offer pearls and when he reaches expert there is only a two out of three chance a pearl trade will even be available this means that one out of every three runs will be killed immediately there would be no use in simply resetting the cleric's profession and trying again as you already spent all of the emeralds you got from selling sticks to level the cleric up to this point if the cleric doesn't offer pearls there is really nothing you can do from here one thing to note is that d-max also had some gold ingots which he sold to the cleric as well this provides massive experience and you can actually receive emeralds instead of spending them in this particular run d-max actually collected more wood than he needed which meant that he could buy even more pearls which he can use to cover ground very quickly before he leaves he also purchases a bow and some arrows for the final fight with pearls and rods collected he can now craft isa vendor and find the stronghold it can't be stressed enough how insane d-max's path was in an almost straight line from spawn he encountered a shipwreck a village a lava pool a desert temple a dark forest and a second village not only that but his nether portal spawned directly on another fortress the odds of everything coming together like this are extremely low but even after all of this the run can still end in multiple ways d-max needs the stronghold to be relatively close to where he ended up and it just so happened that it was only a couple of hundred blocks away considering how large the total area of the ring is this is incredibly close inside the stronghold the portal room location is random and sometimes it can be hard to find even hiding behind completely sealed walls thankfully in this case it was found relatively quickly once teleported to the end d-max immediately begins work on destroying the crystals at the peak of each of the end spikes we can't eliminate the dragon until she perches on this center structure but for each crystal that remains the odds of her doing so is greatly reduced with all of the crystals removed the only thing left to do is wait for the dragon to perch where's this perch oh my god this is 20. this is a 20 that's a 20 what's up 20. that's up 20. oh my god oh my now in order to avoid any possible confusion regarding the two timers in the top right corner the 2017 represents real time and the 1930 represents in-game time which removes load times this new record by d-max is absolutely insane considering how lucky he was and it was the first time that anyone had beaten this category in less than 20 minutes but despite how good it seems people aren't expecting it to last very long and the reason for this is a relatively new strategy involving monuments and buried treasure now i don't want to give away too much because i plan to cover this as soon as the current world record is broken but i do want to mention a recent speed run by the player doy pengu using this newer strategy he was able to get a time of 20 minutes and 17 seconds but that final time is a bit deceiving he actually entered the stronghold a full minute ahead of d-max's record but then it all went horribly horribly wrong so as you can see there is still huge potential for this time to come down much further all we need is for all of the elements to come together i've really been enjoying learning about minecraft lately it's such a deep game and it's really exciting to see all of these new strategies unfold i do have more minecraft videos planned for the future but i also have some more doom and quake content coming soon as well please make sure to subscribe so you don't miss out and a huge thank you to my patrons for supporting the channel as always thank you so much for watching new legends i hope you are having a fantastic day and i will see you in the next video [Music] you
