hi everyone i'm donna jordan from jordan fabrics today i'm going to show you how to make a quilt and it's called oh beautiful and this is from the quilt factory it's designed by deb grogan and it's a fab five pattern which means it takes one yard of five different fabrics now one of the fabrics is only going to be used on the outside border and i'm going to use this very fancy large print for the border because i think that will look good there then we need four other prints they're gonna that are going to be used in all the patchwork here so we're going to need two lights and two darks this is a collection from robert kaufman called florentine garden it's got big flowers and metallic gold accents now if you're using a different collection a different group of colors you just want to keep in mind that you need some contrast like two different darks and then keep those lights a completely different color so that the pattern will show up well i always like to start by ironing each of the fabrics before i cut it that way i know that i can get nice accurate cuts without any wrinkles i'm going to go ahead and get all the cutting done now i can't give you the sizes because it's not my pattern but i've made a lot of the quilt factories patterns and they're very easy to follow [Music] hey these are for the borders so we're just going to set these aside for now and all of these pieces are all for the patchwork the first thing we're going to work with is our bigger squares now i'm going to mark the back side of each of these light squares and i'm going to do that by drawing a line on the diagonal from corner to corner and i like to use just a real light pencil line i'm heading over to my sewing machine and i've got my dark squares and i've got my light squares now take one of the darker squares and one of the lights and put them right sides together and we're going to stitch on both sides of that drawn line now my presser foot it's a quarter inch wide so it's very easy to go down the one side and then just spin it around and go down the second side once you've got those all stitched up take them back to the cutting board and we're just going to slice them right along the drawn line so it will be right between those two stitching lines once they're all sliced up we want to iron these open the easiest way is to put the light fabric down open it up and i'm always kind of careful here because i want to keep that seam straight and i don't want it bowing or arching and when you put that light fabric on the bottom and peel up what happens is the seam allowances all end up going towards the darker fabric all of these squares are going to get trimmed down and squared up and the pattern tells you what size to do it to but remember you want to trim off of each fabric you don't want to have it turned this way where you're trimming off of the same fabric so the easiest way to remember is to put that dog ear in the corner there then the only thing we have to do now is trim off this one last dog ear here with a little pair of scissors once we're done with the squares the next step is to take these strips over to the sewing machine take one of the dark strips and one of these light strips and we're going to make a strip unit we're just going to sew these together all the way along one side so when you've got a long strip unit like this you want to make sure you don't stretch anything so straighten them out and then i usually grab it way far away here you can pin it if you like but that way neither the top nor the bottom stretches and i like to finger press the seam allowance to one side and i want to press it toward the dark fabric so i'm just going to hold it open a little and then draw my finger down here and this makes it real easy to iron it nice and flat so i'm going to finger press this and then i'm going to go ahead and stitch up all the rest of the light and dark strips into two strip units just like this one even though they're pretty flat because we finger press them we still want to use our iron so i'm just going to smooth it out and i like to look at my straight edge here and make sure i've got it lined up pretty straight and then i use a dry iron and then some steam now we're going to sub cut these and we're going to do them in pairs so i've got them right sides together light on the dark dark on the light and it's pretty easy to line them up because the seam allowances are ironed in opposite directions so you can tell if it's nice and flat there and we're going to cut them at the same time because then they're going to be ready to sew when we take them over to the sewing machine i'm just going to pick up the pears and they may get moved a little bit but they will be almost lined up and we'll take these right over to the sewing machine all we have to do now is stitch one seam in these so i'm going to double check make sure that my intersection is lined up there and do one stitch line here and then finger press this and i'm going to finger press all of them exactly the same way all of them over to the right now we have everything we need to make up the blocks that are going to make the entire quilt we need two of these corners and then two of these we need four of these four patches one two three four then we need four half square triangles with that corner and then four with the other fabric in the corner let's lay these out right at the machine and that way they will be easy for us to pick up and stitch together i know all of these go in the middle every block gets laid exactly the same way now our two light blocks here this one is going to go up top right and lower left and these go in the opposite corners now the half square triangles that make the star i'm going to do this background that matches that corner i'm going to surround it with those three together and then i'm going to use them down in the opposite corner as well and then these last half square triangles so the backgrounds are matching we're again surrounding this one with the half square triangle that matches in that corner and then the same thing in the far opposite corner here now it looks like a star i'm just going to slide the whole thing over a little bit so i can stitch now you can make one row at a time and then stitch the rows together and that is basically what i'm going to do but i'm going to do it like this i'm going to take these first two pieces be careful i don't spin them around and i'm going to take them right over to the machine here and i'm going to stitch and leave it on the machine don't snip the threads now i'm going to go right back here to these next two pieces put them right sides together take it right over here and there's no matching at all the squares are the same size so i'm just going to stitch together and again leave it right there grab the third pair and and then the last pair now i'm going to slide all this patchwork over just a little bit so have a little more room now open these up and just add this third piece so it's going to fit right here so i'm going to put them right sides together and stitch and leave it on the machine and i'm going to keep opening and adding pieces as i go down and this piece when we add it there is an intersection in the middle here but look the seam allowances are going in opposite directions so they nest so it's real easy to get that matched up there same thing with this piece seam allowances are nesting and going in the opposite directions and here's the last piece in that row and now all we have to do is open everything up and add the very last piece over here so now what we have is four separate rows here this rows sewed together this one is sewn this one is sewn this one is sewn but i don't have to worry about getting the rows mixed up or turned around because they're connected with those little threads there i'm going to finger press the top row all the seams to the right the next row is all going to go to the left and i'm just going to keep alternating all the way down here now we can turn the whole block and sew the rows together and since everything is finger pressed in opposite directions these intersections will lay nice and flat because the seam allowances are going the opposite way and they will nest now just use the same procedure for this middle seam here and now that very last seam now i'm going to finger press all of these seams all going in the same direction then i'm going to take it over to the ironing board and give it a nice steam press i find with a block like this that has a lot of patchwork that i like to iron it from the back side first because then i can make sure that these seam allowances are actually going the way i want and i don't flip them you don't have to do this it is an extra step but it does kind of squash them down a little better in the direction you want them to go and then when i flip it over i find that nothing gets flipped back behind there very easily and i always like to smooth it out with a dry iron first kind of feel that all the seam allowances are going the way i want and then once it feels flat enough then i'm going to start adding steam and then coaxing it back to square because you know they can get distorted as you sew and you can fix a lot of that with your iron i finished all the squares and i'm ready to lay this out now there's only nine blocks so it's real easy to lay out just put every block facing exactly the same way and that way you get your alternate lights in alternate corners now my lights look very similar so you can't really see it but once you get all the blocks laid out all you have to do so that you can match up your intersections easy is take every other block and simply turn it upside down so take every other block let's do this one flip it upside down it looks exactly the same same with this one and this one and i'll turn that guy up there but then when you come to line these up everywhere you go the seam allowances will be going in opposite directions same thing here and here and it'll be real easy to match all these intersections so i'm going to go ahead and sew up all the blocks and then remember these borders we cut earlier i'm going to stitch all three around the edges then i can get it loaded onto the quilting machine i've got the borders on the quilt is all loaded up next step is to pick a thread color i'm sure i'd like to use something light on this i don't want anything to fight with these squares and triangles there but all of these are light enough that they're not going to show much in the patchwork and that's not even going to show on the background the gold of course that's gonna blend in not gonna show lavender probably give us a little color in the light and won't show in the dark that would be a good choice and then this is a very neutral probably not going to show anywhere i really think the lavender even though it's going to show a little bit i think we'll go with that now even though the quilting is not going to show up much i still like to have some sort of pattern that matches the theme of the quilt so this one is called wish upon a star and it's kind of different sizes of stars with those loops and i think that will look really good on the patchwork [Applause] [Music] i have the oh beautiful quilt all finished got the binding on and i really like the quilting pattern you can hardly see any of the quilting it just blends in the stars show really well you got like a checkerboard in the middle of each one which i hadn't really realized but because i used prints that have such a big contrasting colors that's what shows there now you can see the stars in the quilting like right here there's a little star another little star and there's some bigger stars now on the back side you can see the quilting a little more because i used a darker aqua darker green thread there the binding it it's another fabric that matches it's another coordinate and i like how it's got the same colors but has just a little bit of contrast compared to that outside border now the finished size is 62 by 62 inches so it's a nice throw size quilt thanks for watching our video today we hope you enjoyed it now we are going to have another giveaway i have a really cute baby quilt and matching pillow so it's kind of an alphabet pillow an alphabet quilt let's see here we go it's got all the letters on it and just really cute old-fashioned little pictures there's patchwork on the sides we did a video that showed how to do this method these are made with charm squares even the backing just a sweet little old-fashioned print there and there's a matching pillow so if you are the winner you'll get the quilt and the cute matching pillow it's very easy to enter the giveaways just put your name and your email address in that link that's right below the video that says giveaway good luck now if
