hi everyone i'm donna jordan from jordan fabrics today i'm going to show you how to make a quilt called long tall this is a pattern designed by daniela stout of cozy quilt designs and it's really fun looking because the strips have a stair step effect and those stairs are going both up and down now the pattern does come with multiple sizes included there's a throw a twin and a king i'm going to make the twin today it's kind of a big twin and it uses jelly roll strips we're going to need 36 jelly roll strips so that's basically one jelly roll the only other things we need are a background one and three quarters yards and an accent a third of a yard then we're going to add some borders but we'll worry about the borders binding backing a little bit later on so here's the jelly roll i'm going to use it's a batik jelly roll with lots of different colors in it and you do want to make sure that those all contrast with your background all those strips are going to be the colorful parts here then for the accent i'm going to use this solid black it's just going to make these little tips right there the first step is to take the jelly roll strips and divide it into three stacks with 12 in each stack and don't worry about which color goes where just get a nice blend of the colors in each stack now you may have seen the video we made many years ago one of the first ones we made when we were just starting on youtube on how to make this long tall quilt but honestly the quality was not very good so it's just my son and i who make these videos and so we've learned a lot over the years on how to film each scene so that you can see exactly how to make the quilt and the old video it's just a little bit shaky and hard to watch so we wanted to redo this we're going to redo some of the really old ones so that you as a quilter can have an easy time if you're making the quilt along with me so i've got the strips separated into three stacks and each stack is going to get sub-cut to some different lengths now i can't give you all the sizes because it's not my pattern but cozy quilts patterns are always very easy to follow so now all the sub cuts are done and now you can see their different lengths and that's where we're going to get that stair step effect from the next thing to cut is the accent and the background [Music] all the cutting is done and the next step is to take the accent strips and all the background strips over to the sewing machine what we're going to do is stitch an accent strip onto the side of these background strips so let's open this guy up get one of these guys and just use a very careful quarter inch seam and sew them together now you want to make sure you don't stretch as you sew so if you want to put a couple of pins in you can but pretty much if you just grab them way far away from your machine like this lined up and hold them firmly you can make sure that nothing stretches as you stitch it up i'm going to finger press the seam allowance toward the accent because it's a lot darker so i'm just going to pull this open a little and then draw my fingernail or even the pad of my finger all the way down this seam and that makes it very easy to iron so i've got several different widths of the background but all of them get one accent stitched onto one side just like i did here no matter how wide they are you put one accent onto just one edge even though we finger pressed that seam allowance we're still going to want to iron it so i like to stretch it out on my ironing board here smooth it with my hand and then i'm going to use a dry iron and once i know it's flat and straight then i'm going to add the steam the next step is to take all of these strips and sub cut them into two and a half inch pieces so i'm going to line it up on my cutting board i'm going to make sure this is on one of the lines and then i'm going to make a first cut to get it nice and straight i'm going to pull it over a little here so i'm not in the selvage and then i'm just going to cut two and a half inch pieces all the way down now if you're comfortable cutting a lot of layers you can fold your strips in half and you can layer them all up so i've got them all stacked here and i'm just making sure that each one is on a straight line you can tell by putting both ends on one of these lines then you can make all your cuts all at once again if you're not comfortable doing this many layers you can do less but i'm going to put my weight on the top there and use my big cutter and this way i will get a lot of cutting done with very little effort now what we have is several different lengths of these background accent units and we also have several different lengths of the jelly roll strips so we're going to match them up kind of as opposites so we're going to take this longest section here and it's going to go on to the end of the shortest jelly roll piece this one's going to go on there this one on there the shortest one on this guy these very longest ones they don't get anything added and of course we're gonna have to put some over here some here some here and some here so i'm going to go ahead and take the first stack this stack right here and these guys and stitch them all together so let's take our first small strip here and i'm going to put it right on top of this accent piece stitch it together and then i'm going to finger press the same way that that seam allowance was going so both the seam allowances will be going in the same direction so i'm going to do that with every piece in the stack now that those are all stitched up there i'm going to do the exact same thing for each of the other stacks i've got all the pieces stitched together now now this is one whole block laid out here but we're actually going to be making it in half so all of this is for one half and all of these are for the other so now i'm simply going to take one from each stack and stitch them together in this order so it doesn't really matter which ones you get but i would get all different colors so if you pick up two that are going to be right the same print right next to themselves pick up something else but don't worry too much about which fabrics are where all of the strip units they're all the same length and there's no intersections to match at all so i'm going to lay it out a little bit more so i can see it here and then i'm going to grab these first two sections and i'm going to put this one right sides together on top of that take it over here and simply stitch that quarter inch seam all the way down now i'm going to finger press the seams all to the right so every piece i add on here all the seam allowances are going to be going that way so this one we could set it back here then we can see the next piece is going to go right there and i'm just going to keep adding strips till the block is done now that it's nice and flat i see what it's going to look like and i'm going to make all of the rest of these blocks just like that with the seams going to the right once those are done i'm going to make these blocks and again keep pressing the seam allowances to the right so all of those seams go to the right i've got all the blocks done and i'm ready to lay out the quilt now it's pretty easy to lay it out we've got those two just like that then we're going to take this block and flip it around and the first block and flip it around then we're just going to repeat these two exactly the way they are here and that is the whole first row now the second row is just going to be a mirror image of this so i'm going to have to look to see yep that's going to go there that's going to go there the third row is exactly the same as the first row and right now i'm not worrying about what colors go where i'm just simply going to lay out all the blocks once that's done i will trade them around to make sure everything looks nice and balanced now that it's laid out you can really see the pattern starting to come together i just love how it looks now i'm probably going to trade around a few of the pieces so there's quite a bit of orange here and the orange sticks out quite a bit so i'm going to trade this with one of the guys over there but i'm not going to worry too much about being perfect i'm just going to balance it out just a little bit then i'm going to sew everything together and i'm going to put a couple borders on it get onto the quilting machine i've got the long tall quilt all loaded up on the machine now next step is to pick a thread color and there's so many that would look good on here you do have a lot of open space so if you want to use a contrast thread and have your quilting pattern really show up this darker green would be a good one because this background has a lot of green showing here's a light one that's going to blend in pretty well and it's not going to show too much on there dark gold blends in very well with the patchwork of course and it will show also on the background lighter gold now that's a good option it won't show up very much on there won't show up very much on there you could even go with something a little bit wilder this is a nice peachy color it's going to blend in real well here and you know what you can hardly even see it there of course dark brown would work again it's really going to show for the quilting i think this time i think i would like to blend pretty well so i'm going to go with this medium gold now i want to talk a little bit about the quilting pattern most of the prints in this could be considered fall colored prints it doesn't look like a fall quilt to me but if i wanted to make it look like it was far fall i could do a pattern like this with leaves or i could do a pattern with leaves and acorns and that would tend to give it more of a fall theme here's another leafy one i looked at that would be nice too but i think since it is so nice and colorful that i'm going to do an overall design like this and then that won't make it look like any particular season of the year it'll be good for every day so so [Music] i've got the long tall quilt all done this is one of the fastest quilts i've ever made it went together really in about two days so it was very very fast no tricky matching when we put the blocks together there was no matching and then when we made the rows all of these seam allowances were going in opposite directions all along here so it was really easy to put together i like the small black frame around there that matches these accents it just seems to stop the patchwork and then the interesting batik border looks good the quilting you can see a little bit not very much but just a little you can see all that swirly stuff and i think that looks good on here it doesn't take away from the patchwork but i did do a little bit darker than the background i think that looks really nice on the back i used a batik with these nice big ferny looking leaves and the quilting doesn't show much but i like that the binding looks good on both sides and the quilt is pretty big the pattern calls this a twin but it's 74 by 94. that's almost a full size nice fun quilt to make thanks for watching our video today we hope you enjoyed it now at the end of every video we'd like to have a giveaway and today's giveaway is the ring of wreaths quilt this one
