[Music] this man is tre Harrison now tre is one of the best Tetris players in the entire world and if you don't believe me just watch this footage of tre competing in the qualifiers for the 2018 classic Tetris World Championships always stressing me out a couple of bad C's put him right back to do it look at this no mr. ops though he is this clean clean digging Act of 2018 oh lordy oh how dare you dirty Tetris boom judges for tray and cleans it out his Tetris alive the dirtiest Tetris alive now one of the things that makes Trey so interesting to me as a Tetris player is his personal history with the game he's been playing for a very very long time he's been playing one specific version of Tetris that entire time so I got addicted to Tetris in the late 80s because I was determined to win the 1990 Texas they'll show you magic tonight on the game he's 13 years old so I've been playing Tetris on the need to know well ever since then in fact to this day and I'm helped organize the classic Tetris World Championship with two other guys Benson had got a youtube channel in which of the implements of a youtube / classic Tetris and just you know addicted to it pretty much yeah it's a great it is a great game he's the is right about that now the reason that I'm hanging out with Trey and the reason I hunted him down in the first place is because last week I got the chance to play Tetris effect the new tetris game coming from enhanced games now if you don't know what Tetris effect is that means a couple things one that means that you have missed out on seeing my favorite video game trailer of the past three years which you should definitely check out after this video but basically what Tetris effect is is it's Tetris if Tetris was a responsive reactive VR optional music puzzle game brought to you by Tetsuya Mizuguchi the guy who made games like rez and luminous among other things now there are two main reasons I wanted to see a high-level Tetris player like Trey get his hands on a game like Tetris effect first I wanted to know what tetris purists like Trey would think of such a weird version of their favorite game and second I just really wanted to see what high level tetris effect play would even look like so like he mentions Trey has almost exclusively played the nes version of tetris so sitting down to play Tetris effect for the first time was actually Trey's first time ever using a ps4 controller but we gave him a little bit of time to warm up with a game and get comfortable and within minutes we were seeing what was just unmistakeably expert level tetris play [Music] this is some clean contentious gameplay right here holy Sh now I had gotten a chance to play Tetris effect a couple times prior to this but Trey was instantly outperforming both me and everyone else I did see played such as effect during all of e3 and the longer Trey played the game the more comfortable he got and therefore the better he did at the game it was really a sight to behold and that was really exciting to see but I had also sort of come into this appointment with a agenda see one of the cool things about Tetris effect is this new feature called zone by clearing liens in Tetris effect you build up this zone meter in the lower left corner of the screen and by squeezing the triggers you can burn this meter and activate this sort of zone time effect in which time temporarily stops the blocks don't fall automatically anymore and you're kind of just encouraged to clear as many lines as possible before the zone runs out now because time is stopped liens actually do not clear when you're in the zone mode and instead they move to the bottom of the screen allowing you to for the first time in Tetris history actually clear more than four lines at once so while in the classic game a four line clear which is actually called a Tetris is the highest accomplishment you can pretty much strive for in Tetris effect the theoretical maximum you can get is called a deca hexa Tris which is the game's term for a 16 line or more combo and it's worth noting that the concept of a deca hex citrus is so new and so powerful and so utterly foreign to human ears that at the time of this video's publication there are actually zero results for deca heck citrus on Google right now now during trade session with the game we got painfully close to achieving the coveted deca heck citrus and and there was one moment in particular that I'm gonna stop and let you watch because it was really really stunning to see ah it's okay if you clear that line you can it'll move it out of your way and there you go there now you can [Music] [Music] tre had achieved a dodeca tryst which is impressive it's a 12 line of zone clear and that's nothing to scoff at but as we neared the end of our demo time we never did anything better than eight a dodeca trous it was around that time that tre said something that surprised me now to be honest it actually had not occurred to me that a hard core classic tetris guy would even be interested in the vr experience of tetris effect I had played Tetris effect in VR a day earlier and really enjoyed it but it was also about as far from a traditional Tetris experience as you could possibly get but the more I thought about it the more I was actually kind of excited to see how tre would react to VR Tetris so we we got it set up now as tre began playing Tetris effect in virtual reality which by the way was his first experience using PlayStation VR something really fascinating started happening he started doing even better at the game it was instantly noticeable and everyone in the rooms focused just sort of gradually shifted to what was happening on screen and suddenly tre was playing far faster and far more accurately than he'd been able to before he's going a little faster oh actually you know what the latency in those goggles is so much lower than the TV to me that was the best possible explanation of what was happening see PlayStation VR s headset has this SuperDuper low latency OLED panel that it uses for the goggles that have only about 18 milliseconds of latency or 0.001 eight seconds which is far far lower latency than most modern televisions have so it stood the reason that with that lower latency tray was able to perform his controller inputs faster and more accurately resulting in noticeably better play [Music] I was tray kept going his own meter began to fill and it started to look like if this was gonna be the moment we were waiting for so we watched [Music] Oh any line any level do you did it the tray had just achieved the world's first Decca hexxit race at least outside of the walls of this studio developing the game and we had all been lucky enough to witness it firsthand we did it we got the covenants that the exodus tray took off his headset we set our goodbyes and we left the next day I kept thinking about why Trey's performance had improved so drastically in virtual reality I mean there's the lower latency of the VR headset of course but the more I thought about it the more I felt like that was only a small piece of the explanation see one of the best parts of Tetris has always been the way that you sort of zone out and lose yourself while playing it that's sort of like flow state that you enter when playing Tetris and other games like it is something pretty unique to video games and it's a feeling that I've always felt most acutely when playing either puzzle games or music games and it Tetris effect is really interesting because it's kind of both of those things at once right and and to hear the developers talk about Tetris effect they designed this game specifically to maximize this feeling in players I think that design decision combined with the audio visual isolation of headphones and a VR headset is probably what made tray play so well that day as I thought about it more I realized that in hindsight all of my favorite virtual reality experiences so far have kind of been versions of the same thing games like thumper where instead of using the VR headset to put you in some elaborate 3d space where you have to Crane your neck all over the place to look at things they instead just kind of use the VR headset as headphones for your eyes just another way to further immerse yourself in the world of the game the personally I love that and so far Tesla's effect is the best distillation of that precise feeling that I've ever encountered in in any video game inside or outside of the yard [Music] it's a boxer scores over the weekend did you have a good time what's your favorite game out of these three games [Music] real quickly a huge thank you to Trey Harrison for helping me to make this video if you want to see more from Trey you should subscribe to his channel classic Tetris which I have a link to right here where you can see tournament footage highlights interviews and more featuring the world's best classic FINALLY I’ve been waiting just to see someone sit down and play the darn game. And thankfully they got someone ridiculously good to play the demo.

I get the hype behind for developers that are making this game considering everything they’ve done has been high quality .

But it’s been killing me to see what exactly makes this game different.

Putting it simply moving, flipping, sliding, and slamming Tetris pieces seems to create different tones and beats. So as you become better at the game and start to move pieces around at higher speeds the musicality of your beats and tempo will go more inline with the song playing in the background. It will be interesting to see what beats pro players create by just simply playing.

There is also a new game mechanic, Going in the zone. Time essentially freezes allowing you to pull off multiple Tetris' in a single combo. Decahexatris (16+ lines in a single combo) is the name for the largest Tetris you can achieve while in the zone.

It seems very intriguing and I’m curious to see how they’ll implement rhythm into the game.

Perhaps get increased points for slamming down a Tetris just as the song β€œdrops the beat”.

I would have never seen myself get a PSVR but between Tetris and Dreams I’ll definitely be reconsidering.

Also something that blew my mind is the game having less latency on PSVR than on a TV so the smoother gameplay actually makes it easier for your brain to process the information onscreen.

Starting here they show some good info on why the VR looks smoother and thought the gameplay was pretty impressive to see and hear.

Edit: Spelling.

Great video. I do wish we heard some of Trey's thoughts about the game though.

Holy. Shit. I missed out on this game at E3, but I also bypassed PSVR as a whole. This video was fucking sick! If that is the music that is part of the game, as well as matching it with those visual effects, of all games, TETRIS is what is going to make me want a PSVR!

What's the song that played when he was going for the 16 line thingy? lol

I liked the video but did I miss the part where they asked him afterwards how he felt about it? I don't think I saw anything about asking him about his experience going from original Tetris to this
