>> GOOD AFTERNOON. I'M PAT SUMMERALL WITH JOHN MADDEN. MUCH HAS BEEN MADE OF THIS WEEK'S MATCHUP BECAUSE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MIKE DITKA AND TOM LANDRY, THE FACT THAT DITKA WAS AN ASSISTANT HERE FOR NINE YEARS. DO YOU REALLY THINK, JOHN, THAT HAS AN EFFECT? >> I DON'T THINK THIS YEAR. I THINK A YEAR AGO WHEN THEY PLAYED THAT IT DID HAVE AN EFFECT, AND I THINK IT AFFECTED MIKE DITKA. HE SAID SO. HE SAID THAT IT AFFECTED HIS COACHING, IT AFFECTED HIS TEAM, AND THEY REALLY DIDN'T PLAY AS WELL AS THEY SHOULD HAVE. BUT NOW I THINK THIS IS A COWBOY TEAM AGAINST A BEAR TEAM. AND MAYBE IT'S EVEN BIGGER THAN DITKA AND IT'S BIGGER THAN LANDRY. THERE'S SOME GUYS ON THE BEARS, LIKE WALTER PAYTON, GARY FENCIK -- THESE GUYS HAVE NEVER BEATEN THE COWBOYS. AND AS GARY FENCIK SAID, "I'M OH-FOR-DALLAS." AND THAT'S KIND OF EMBARRASSING. THAT'S A PRETTY BIG MOTIVATOR. >> SURE IS. THEY HAVEN'T BEATEN DALLAS SINCE 1971, AS A MATTER OF FACT. JOHN AND I HAD A CHANCE TO VISIT WITH BOTH MIKE DITKA AND TOM LANDRY YESTERDAY. HOW DO YOU THINK THEY'RE GONNA APPROACH THIS GAME? >> THEY'RE BOTH TALKING ABOUT THE RUNNING GAME. AS TOM LANDRY SAYS, "WE HAVE TO BE ABLE NOT TO STAY PATIENT, NOT TO LOOK FOR CONSISTENCY. BECAUSE AGAINST THIS BEAR DEFENSE, YOU'RE NOT GONNA HAVE CONSISTENCY. WE'RE JUST GONNA HAVE TO RUN A LOT OF PLAYS AND TRY AND GET THE BIG PLAY." NOW, OF COURSE, THE BIG-PLAY GUYS FOR THE COWBOYS ARE TONY DORSETT AND TONY HILL. SO THEY HAVE TO GET THEIR BIG PLAYS THERE. NOW, MIKE DITKA SAYS, "WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO RUN, TO ESTABLISH THAT WE CAN RUN." BECAUSE FOR STEVE FULLER TO PASS, THEY HAVE TO BE PLAY-ACTION TYPE PASSES -- THE TYPE WHERE YOU FAKE THE RUN AND THEN YOU COME BACK AND THROW THE BALL. AS HE SAYS, "IF WE CAN'T RUN -- THE COWBOYS AREN'T STUPID. THEY AREN'T GONNA GO FOR PLAY-PASSES. WE HAVE TO COME OUT AND WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO RUN, MAKE THEM RESPECT THAT RUN. THEN WHEN THEY START TO COME UP, THEN WE CAN THROW THE PASS." >> THE BEARS WILL RECEIVE THE KICKOFF. WILLIE GAULT AND DENNIS GENTRY BACK DEEP. THIS IS RAFAEL SEPTIEN WHO WILL KICK OFF FOR DALLAS. GAULT IS NUMBER 83 AND DENNIS GENTRY IS NUMBER 29. AND THEY'LL GO TO WORK ON OFFENSE FIRST. THE UNBEATEN BEARS. HERE'S SEPTIEN. TO GAULT AT ABOUT THE 9. WITH THE GREAT SPEED HE GETS OUT TO ABOUT THE 29 BEFORE HE IS TAKEN DOWN. AND LET'S LOOK AT THE BEAR OFFENSE. THE BACKS AND RECEIVERS. STEVE FULLER STARTING AT QUARTERBACK. WALTER PAYTON AND MATT SUHEY, THE BACKS. WILLIE GAULT AND DENNIS McKINNON WIDE. UP FRONT -- JIM COVERT, BORTZ. HILGENBERG IS THE CENTER. TOM THAYER, THE RIGHT GUARD. KEITH VAN HORNE, THE RIGHT TACKLE. AND THE TIGHT END WILL BE EMERY MOOREHEAD STARTING, WE THINK. IT IS EMERY MOOREHEAD. STEVE FULLER. THAT'S THE BOOK ON HIM. McMAHON WILL NOT PLAY, WE'RE TOLD. McKINNON IS THE MAN IN MOTION. AND FULLER FAKES FIRST TO SUHEY. GOES DEEP FOR GAULT. TO THE OUTSIDE WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE INSIDE. HE HAD A CHANCE. HE HAD A STEP. THE DALLAS DEFENSE. THEY PLAY A LOT OF DIFFERENT ONES, BUT THIS IS THE WAY THEY LINE UP ORIGINALLY. JONES, DUTTON, WHITE, AND JEFFCOAT ACROSS THE FRONT. THE THREE LINEBACKERS ARE HEGMAN, EUGENE LOCKHART IN THE MIDDLE, AND JEFF ROHRER ON THE OUTSIDE. IN THE SECONDARY IT'S WALLS AND FELLOWS ON THE CORNERS, CLINKSCALE AND DOWNS THE TWO SAFETIES. BUT THEY DO A LOT OF CHANGING, THEY DO A LOT OF BLITZING, AND YOU'LL SEE A LOT OF DIFFERENT LOOKS UP FRONT. SECOND DOWN AND 10. GAULT THIS TIME SPLIT WIDE TO THE RIGHT. PAYTON AND SUHEY. AND THAT'S MOOREHEAD IN MOTION. AND THIS IS SUHEY. MET IN THE BACKFIELD BY HEGMAN. HE GOT AWAY FROM HIM. GOT A COUPLE YARDS. HE WAS LUCKY TO GET OUT OF THAT TRAP. EUGENE LOCKHART BROUGHT HIM DOWN. >> USUALLY, PAT, IN A GAME WHERE YOU DON'T INTEND TO THROW THE BALL A LOT, YOU DON'T REALLY THINK YOU CAN BE SUCCESSFUL THROWING IT, THE FIRST THING YOU DO IS THROW IT. IN OTHER WORDS, "WE KNOW THAT WE CAN'T, BUT WE REALLY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT WE'RE NOT GONNA DO IT THAT MUCH. SO WE'RE GOING TO COME OUT AND ON THE FIRST PLAY AIR IT OUT, AND THEN WE'LL SETTLE DOWN AFTER THAT." >> THAT'LL MAKE IT THIRD AND 6, WHAT WOULD SEEM TO BE A PASSING DOWN. BUT IN THE BEARS' CASE, THAT DOESN'T ALWAYS HOLD TRUE. MARGERUM IS IN AND SUHEY IS OUT. THAT WAS GENTRY IN MOTION. THIS IS FULLER OUT THE SHOTGUN. HE THROWS FOR GENTRY, HIGH. THE BEARS WILL HAVE TO PUNT. DEXTOR CLINKSCALE ON THE DEFENSE. >> THAT'S THE SITUATION THAT THE BEARS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO STAY OUT OF IS THAT REAL "PASSING" DOWN. THERE'S NO ONE BETTER THAN THE COWBOYS WITH THAT DEFENSE, THAT 4-0 DEFENSE THEY USE. THE BEARS' PUNTER IS MAURY BUFORD, AND NUMBER 40 BACK FOR THE COWBOYS IS BILL BATES. NOT REALLY A BREAKAWAY THREAT, BUT VERY RELIABLE BACK THERE IS BATES. >> BATES WILL FIND A TACKLER. >> HE'LL FIND SOMEBODY TO RUN INTO, WON'T HE? >> HE SURE WILL. "WHERE ARE THOSE TACKLERS?! LET ME AT 'EM!" >> BUFORD. NOT UNDER PRESSURE. GETS OFF A GOOD PUNT. BATES AT THE 18. BATES AROUND THE CORNER. BATES OUT OF BOUNDS AT ABOUT THE 30. 4.7 ON THE HANG TIME AND A 49-YARD PUNT BY BUFORD. BATES RETURNED IT FOR 12. THE DALLAS OFFENSE. DANNY WHITE, THE QUARTERBACK. DORSETT AND NEWSOME BEHIND HIM, AND HILL AND RENFRO, THE WIDE RECEIVERS. POZDERAC, TITENSOR. RAFFERTY, THE CENTER. PETERSEN, COOPER. AND DOUG COSBIE, THE TIGHT END. THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO MOVE IT. IT HASN'T BEEN SPECTACULAR, BUT THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO MOVE IT ENOUGH TO BE UP AMONG THE LEADERS IN THE NFL ON OFFENSE. RENFRO IS WIDE RIGHT. HILL IS WIDE LEFT. IT'S DORSETT WITH ROOM. DORSETT AWAY FROM FENCIK, AND DORSETT OUT OF BOUNDS BY DUERSON IN BEAR TERRITORY. A GAIN OF 22 YARDS. >> THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THE COWBOYS WERE TALKING ABOUT. THEY PUT A LOT OF GUYS UP THERE. NOW, WATCH, THE CHICAGO DEFENSE IS GOING TO SHIFT. YOU SEE THEM SHIFT TO THE RIGHT. PERRY COMES OVER. THEY'RE GOING TO RUN RIGHT INTO THIS SHIFT. WATCH THEM. THEY DOUBLE-TEAM PERRY. GOOD BLOCK. GET THE BIG REFRIGERATOR OUT OF THERE. AND WHAP! THERE GOES DORSETT RIGHT BY HIM. THAT'S THE TYPE OF THING THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT. "WE'RE GOING TO DO THAT A LOT. WE WON'T MAKE IT EVERY TIME, BUT SOMETIMES WE'RE GOING TO GET BIG PLAYS." >> FIRST AND 10, DALLAS, AT THE BEAR 48. DORSETT MOVES BACK DEEP IN THE "I." HE GETS THE PITCHOUT. CHASED BY HAMPTON. AWAY FROM HAMPTON AND TAKEN DOWN BY FENCIK. THE BEAR DEFENSIVE LINE. HAMPTON; McMICHAEL; THE REFRIGERATOR, WILLIAM PERRY; AND RICHARD DENT. THREE LINEBACKERS. WILSON, SINGLETARY, AND MARSHALL. MARSHALL HAVING A FINE YEAR. CORNERBACKS, RICHARDSON AND FRAZIER. AND THE SAFETIES, DUERSON AND FENCIK. ALTHOUGH THE WAY THEY LINE UP THOSE SAFETYMEN AREN'T ALWAYS SAFETIES ARE THEY? >> WELL, DUERSON, WHO'S LISTED AS THE STRONG SAFETY -- IN FACT, WE SEE HIM RIGHT NOW -- HE LINES UP MORE ON THE WEAK SIDE AS A WEAKSIDE LINEBACKER. THERE HE IS, NUMBER 22. >> NEWSOME WAS MOVING. WHITE. AWAY FROM HAMPTON. GETS IT TO TONY HILL. TONY HILL WILL HAVE CLOSE TO A FIRST DOWN. MIKE RICHARDSON WAS THE DEFENDER. GOOD EFFORT BY WHITE. >> THAT WAS A BIG THING BY DANNY WHITE. WATCH FROM THE RIGHT OF THE SCREEN. DAN HAMPTON IS GOING TO BE RIGHT THERE. WATCH HIM -- TO HIS RIGHT. NOW HE GETS AWAY FROM HAMPTON. HAD HE STAYED IN THE POCKET, HE WOULD HAVE TAKEN A SACK. GETS AWAY FROM HAMPTON. BOOM -- HE FINDS TONY HILL OUT THERE IN THE SIDELINE. THAT WAS REALLY A DANNY WHITE COMPLETION. THAT WAS HIS PLAY. >> ENOUGH FOR A FIRST DOWN, AS TOM LANDRY LOOKS ON. PHIL POZDERAC, BY THE WAY, IS OUT, AND CHRIS SCHULTZ HAS TAKEN HIS PLACE AT LEFT TACKLE. POZDERAC LIMPED OUT. HE'S HAD A BAD KNEE, AND I THINK HE AGGRAVATED THINGS A LITTLE BIT. RENFRO MOVING. WHITE. FOR THE BUNDLE TO HILL. OOH, THAT COULD HAVE BEEN. RICHARDSON BACK THERE WITH HIM, BUT THAT COULD HAVE BEEN 6. >> I THINK ONE THING THAT THE COWBOYS ARE DOING IS THEY WANT TO TEST OUT MIKE RICHARDSON. HE'S HAD A PULLED HAMSTRING. HE'S THE CORNER THERE. NUMBER 27. HE HASN'T PLAYED FOR THREE WEEKS. THEY WANT TO CHECK IT OUT, SEE IF THAT HAMSTRING IS OKAY. SO THE WAY TO CHECK IT OUT IS TO GO DEEP ON HIM AND MAKE HIM GET INTO A BURST. >> TONY HILL ALMOST HAD 6 WITH THAT BURST. THAT WAS A GOOD THROW. SECOND AND 10. THEY'RE OPERATING FROM THE BEAR 38. DORSETT. AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. NOTHING DOING. RICHARD DENT AND STEVE McMICHAEL. A LOT OF THESE BEAR PLAYERS HAVE ROOTS IN THE SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE AND IN TEXAS. >> I'LL TELL YOU, THEY TRIED TO RUN THAT ONE RIGHT AT THE REFRIGERATOR, WHERE GLEN TITENSOR HAD TO BLOCK HIM. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE TITENSOR? WATCH 72 RIGHT IN THERE. WATCH TITENSOR. HE GOES HELMET-TO-HELMET. TITENSOR, THE GUY WHO'S SUPPOSED TO MAKE HIM GO THAT WAY, HE STARTS BACKWARD. HE ENDS UP ON HIS BACK ON TOP OF THE PILE. BOY, THAT'S A LOAD PUTTING YOU BACK. HOW WOULD LIKE TO -- WHUMP! -- "OH, THERE I GO BACKWARD." >> THIRD DOWN. WHITE BACK TO THROW IN THE POCKET. FINDS SOMEBODY ALMOST. AND IT'S ALMOST PICKED OFF. INTENDED FOR COSBIE. FENCIK ALMOST CAME UP WITH AN INTERCEPTION. AND THE COWBOYS WILL HAVE TO PUNT IT. >> THERE'S A GUY WHO DOES A LOT OF THINGS. GARY FENCIK. YOU THINK OF A GUY 10 YEARS FROM YALE AND THINK, "HE'S PROBABLY NOT VERY TOUGH." I'LL TELL YOU, HE IS A TOUGH GUY. AND HE'S A BRIGHT GUY. HE KNOWS THIS DEFENSE. I THINK HE'S BUDDY RYAN'S BRAINS ON THE FIELD. I THINK HE'S THE GUY WHO COACHES ON THE FIELD. >> MIKE SAXON BACK TO PUNT FOR DALLAS. FIFTH IN THE NFC. YOU SAW HIS AVERAGE -- 43.1. KEITH ORTEGO BACK FOR THE BEARS. GOES OVER HIS HEAD. AND INTO THE END ZONE. THEY'LL BRING IT BACK TO THE 20, WHERE THE BEARS WILL TAKE OVER. A PUNT OF 38, BUT THEY'LL BRING IT BACK TO THE 20. IT'LL BE FIRST AND 10, BEARS, FROM THAT POINT, AS TOM LANDRY AND DANNY WHITE HAVE A LITTLE MEETING. >> BEARS 0, DALLAS 0. PAT SUMMERALL AND JOHN MADDEN. WE'RE AT TEXAS STADIUM. THE UNBEATEN BEARS TRYING TO GO 11-0 AND TRYING TO BEAT DALLAS FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1971. >> THAT HAS TO BE FRUSTRATING FOR ALL THOSE GUYS PLAYING AND HEARING THAT -- "AMERICA'S TEAM" AND THIS AND THAT -- AND THEN NEVER BEATING THEM. >> PAYTON AND SUHEY. AND SUHEY COMES OUT ON THE RIGHT WING BEHIND MOOREHEAD. FULLER STARTS HIM IN MOTION. PAYTON IS BEHIND HIM. THEY LOOK QUICKLY TO THE OUTSIDE. THE PASS IS COMPLETE TO GAULT. IN FRONT OF FELLOWS. CHECKING A COUPLE OF THE OTHER SCORES -- STEVE FULLER, THE BEAR QUARTERBACK. McMAHON IS OUT. CLEVELAND LEADS BUFFALO IN THE FIRST QUARTER 3-0. AND PHILADELPHIA OVER ST. LOUIS 7-0. THAT'S ALSO FIRST QUARTER. AND INDIANAPOLIS 3, MIAMI 0, FIRST QUARTER. TOM LANDRY, WHO HAS LASTED FOR 26 SEASONS AS THE HEAD COACH OF THE DALLAS COWBOYS. AND WHEN YOU TALK TO HIM, JOHN, YOU REALLY KNOW WHY, DON'T YOU? >> THAT'S RIGHT. HE DOESN'T LET THINGS BOTHER HIM, ESPECIALLY THINGS HE CAN'T CONTROL. >> FULLER TO PAYTON. PAYTON MAYBE GOT 2. IT WAS ON FIRST DOWN. THE FIRST MAN TO HIT HIM WAS JIM JEFFCOAT. >> YOU TALK ABOUT GUYS THAT HAVE DONE AMAZING THINGS OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME -- THAT IS TOM LANDRY, BUT IT'S ALSO THIS GUY, WALTER PAYTON. IT'S ONE THING TO BE ABLE TO RUN WITH THE BALL AND THEN TO BE ABLE TO CATCH IT LIKE HE DOES AND BLOCK LIKE HE DOES, BUT TO DO IT OVER THE YEARS, TO BE IN HIS 11th YEAR AND DO IT AND LEAD EVERYTHING AND DO IT SO WELL -- HE'S GONNA GO OVER 1,000 YARDS TODAY. AMAZING FOOTBALL PLAYER. >> EXTREMELY DURABLE. EXTREMELY STRONG. JUST OUTSTANDING. HERE'S SUHEY. IN THE ARMS OF DEXTOR CLINKSCALE AND EUGENE LOCKHART. SUHEY GOT ABOUT 3 YARDS, AND IT'LL BRING UP A THIRD-DOWN SITUATION. IT'LL BE ABOUT THIRD AND 4. THEY'VE HAD SOME PROBLEMS, AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW, AT GIANTS STADIUM EARLIER. RIGHT NOW LET'S GO THERE AND JOIN VERNE LUNDQUIST AND TERRY BRADSHAW. WE'RE AT TEXAS STADIUM, WHERE THE COWBOYS HAVE MADE THOSE MASSIVE SITUATION SUBSTITUTIONS. AND THEY GO WITH THAT 4-0 DEFENSE THAT HAS NOW BECOME RATHER FAMOUS. BILL BATES IN THE MIDDLE. IT'S PAYTON. PAYTON WAS HIT BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. GETS AWAY FROM THREE PEOPLE. SPINS BACK TO ABOUT THE 40. DEXTOR CLINKSCALE FINALLY GOT HIM DOWN. HE DIDN'T GET THE FIRST-DOWN YARDAGE. BILL BATES WAS THE FIRST MAN TO HIT HIM. >> THAT'S THE INTERESTING THING. LET'S LOOK HERE ON THE CHALKBOARD. WHEN THEY GO TO THE 4-0 -- THIS IS BILL BATES. HE PLAYS MIDDLE LINEBACKER. HE COMES IN. THEY TRY AND RUN AT HIM, AND BOOM, HE MAKES THE HIT THERE. SO HE'S NOT ONLY A DEFENSIVE BACK. LOOK, THEY TRY AND CROSS-BLOCK. BATES GETS IN THERE, TAKES ON THAT GUARD, AND HE'S THE GUY THAT FOULS UP THE PLAY. HE DIDN'T MAKE THE TACKLE, BUT HE'S THE GUY THAT GOT IN THERE AND CAUSED HAVOC. >> FOURTH DOWN, AND MAURY BUFORD BACK IN TO PUNT AGAIN. BATES BACK DEEP. ANOTHER GOOD KICK BY BUFORD. BATES -- FAIR-CATCH SIGNAL AT ABOUT THE 13. 4.6 HANG TIME. THE BEARS' DENNIS GENTRY WAS DOWN LOOKING IN BATES' EYES, AND SO HE SIGNALED WISELY FOR THE FAIR CATCH. PUNT OF 48 YARDS, AND THE COWBOYS TAKE OVER, 0-0. >> RIGHT HERE, THE UNDEFEATED BEARS AGAINST THE 7-3 COWBOYS. 0-0, FIRST QUARTER. 9:29 REMAINING. HERE'S DORSETT. ALMOST SQUIRMS OUT OF THE PACK. DAN HAMPTON BRINGS HIM DOWN. >> AND ALMOST WAS FALLEN UPON BY THE REFRIGERATOR PERRY. DID YOU SEE THAT ONE? THEY WERE GOING TO RUN INSIDE, AND WATCH HIM, 72 HERE. HE'LL TAKE THE OUTSIDE ON TITENSOR. PRETTY QUICK HE GETS UP THE FIELD. DORSETT'S BY HIM. HE SAYS, "WHOA, LET ME GET A LITTLE OF THAT THING." AND HE HIT HIM IN THE -- HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE DORSETT -- HE WEIGHS ABOUT 180 POUNDS, NICE LITTLE GUY -- AND HAVE THIS GUY COMING AND FALLING ON YOU WHEN YOU'RE DOWN, FORCING YOU INTO THAT CEMENT TURF? >> HOW'D YOU LIKE TO BE 180 AND BE OUTWEIGHED BY ALMOST THAT MUCH? RENFRO IS THE MAN MOVING AROUND. DENT JUMPED, BUT NO FLAG GOES DOWN. WHITE GETS IT OVER THE MIDDLE. NOW THERE IS A PENALTY FLAG. THAT'S RENFRO. THAT'LL BE ENOUGH FOR A DALLAS FIRST DOWN, BUT LET'S SEE WHO THE PENALTY IS AGAINST. A GAIN OF 19. AGAINST THE BEARS. GENE BARTH IS THE REFEREE. >> DEFENSE LEFT END, OFFSIDE. PENALTY REFUSED. FIRST DOWN. >> YOU'VE GOT THE LEFT END LINING UP -- YOU KNOW, TRYING TO GET A HEAD START ON THAT BALL. LINED UP OFFSIDES. LET'S SEE IF WE CAN SEE IT. I THINK THAT'S DAN HAMPTON IN THE LEFT-HANDED STANCE -- IS ON THE LEFT SIDE. THEY COULD HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THE RIGHT DEFENSIVE END. >> I THINK THEY HAD TO BE TALKING ABOUT RICHARD DENT. HE WAS THE ONE WHO LEANED EARLY. FIRST DOWN, DALLAS. THEY OPERATE FROM THEIR OWN 33. WHITE GOES RIGHT TO THE AIR. OUTSIDE TO NEWSOME. NEWSOME TAKEN OUT OF BOUNDS BY OTIS WILSON. NEWSOME IN MOTION. WHITE TO WORK. TRYING TO RUN A SCREEN, AND IT'S BATTED AWAY, AND HE IS HAMMERED... BY OTIS WILSON BEFORE THEY COULD GET ANYTHING SET UP. >> YOU KNOW, ONE THING -- THE BEARS REMEMBER THAT PLAY. LAST YEAR, THEY PLAYED UP IN CHICAGO. THIS WAS THE BIG PLAY. THEY CAME BACK, THREW A SCREEN PASS OUT HERE TO THE LEFT LIKE THIS TO TONY DORSETT, AND HE RAN WITH IT ABOUT 70 YARDS FOR A TOUCHDOWN. THEY SAY THAT, "THIS TIME, WE'RE GOING TO PLAY THAT SCREEN. GET THAT RUSH FROM THAT OUTSIDE. GET YOUR HANDS UP." LOOK AT THE GUYS RUNNING DOWN THE LINE, COMING UP IN THE BACKFIELD. THEY HAVE IT COVERED OVER THERE, AND THEY HAD IT KNOCKED DOWN IN THE BACKFIELD. THEY'VE BEEN PRACTICING ON THAT ONE. >> THAT WAS WILBER MARSHALL WHO CAME IN AND BATTED IT AWAY. OTIS WILSON THERE WITH THE ASSIST. THOSE TWO LINEBACKERS LINED UP RIGHT TOGETHER. THIRD DOWN, AND WHITE... THROWS TO COSBIE. THAT BIG TARGET COMES IN IN A VERY VALUABLE TIME ONE MORE TIME. SHAUN GAYLE TACKLED HIM. >> WELL, THAT'S THE THING THAT DANNY WHITE LIKES ABOUT DOUG COSBIE IS THAT BIG 6'6" TARGET, AND YOU CAN SEE HOW HE CAN SEE HIM. YOU SEE, HE GETS DOWNFIELD, TURNS AROUND, GIVES HIM HIS NUMBERS, SHOWS HIM THE 84, AND THEN, BOOM, HE GOT THAT STRAIGHT THROW TO HIM FOR THE FIRST DOWN. >> JUST SHORT OF MIDFIELD ARE THE COWBOYS. 0-0 THE SCORE. FIRST AND 10. PLAY LOOKED A LITTLE BIT OUT OF SYNC FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. MIKE SINGLETARY MADE THE STOP ON DORSETT. THAT JUST DIDN'T LOOK RIGHT. >> NO, IT DIDN'T AT ALL. YOU KNOW, THEY RAN IT RIGHT INTO DAN HAMPTON. NOW, HE'S AN INTERESTING PLAYER. HE PLAYS THE LEFT END, RIGHT END, OVER THE NOSE TACKLE. IN FACT, HE SAID THAT TODAY HE WILL PLAY OVER FOUR OF THE FIVE OFFENSIVE LINEMEN OF THE COWBOYS. NOW, SEE, HERE IS ON THIS SIDE TAKING A LEFT-HANDED STANCE. WHAT HE DOES IS HE TAKES A LEFT-HANDED STANCE ON PASS RUSH AND A RIGHT-HANDED STANCE WHEN HE'S PLAYING RUN. >> SECOND AND 12. HAMPTON IS NOW LINED UP OUTSIDE THE RIGHT TACKLE. AT LEFT END. FLAG IS DOWN. THE PASS IS DEFLECTED. THE REFRIGERATOR, I THINK, WILLIAM PERRY, GOT A HAND UP AND KNOCKED IT AWAY, BUT IT'S AGAINST DALLAS. >> THAT'LL BE AN INTERESTING THING TO SEE IF THE BEARS TURN IT DOWN OR NOT BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO BE THIRD AND LONG OR SECOND AND LONGER. I THINK I WOULD TURN IT DOWN. >> FENCIK, AS YOU SAID, MAKING THE DECISION. HE'S LOOKING OVER TO BUDDY RYAN AND MIKE DITKA. >> ILLEGAL MOTION, NUMBER 33. PENALTY REFUSED. THIRD DOWN. >> THEY TURN IT DOWN. SO IT'S THIRD DOWN AND ABOUT 11. >> THEY WANT THAT THIRD AND LONG INSTEAD OF SECOND AND LONGER. BUT ONE THING ABOUT THE REFRIGERATOR -- YOU KNOW, HE MAY NOT BE A GREAT PASS RUSHER AS FAR AS A SACKER. BUT HE'S SO BIG THAT HE CAN GET PENETRATION IN THAT MIDDLE AND KNOCK BALLS DOWN. >> WHICH IS JUST WHAT HE JUST DID. THIRD DOWN. THEY NEED 11. BEARS PUT A LOT OF HEAT ON DANNY WHITE. HE HAS TO JUST THROW IT AWAY. IT LOOKED LIKE THEY DIDN'T COME CLOSE TO SLOWING ANYBODY DOWN UP FRONT. >> I DON'T KNOW THAT THAT'S NOT THROWING THE BALL AWAY, BECAUSE DANNY WHITE'S IN THE SHOTGUN HERE, GETS BIG PRESSURE -- LINEBACKERS COMING FROM THE OUTSIDE, McMICHAEL STRAIGHT UP THE MIDDLE. THERE'S HAMPTON RIGHT THERE. HE JUST THREW THE BALL OUT THERE, AND THERE WAS NO RECEIVER OUT THERE AT ALL. >> SO MIKE SAXON COMES IN TO PUNT. DEEP MAN IS KEITH ORTEGO... NUMBER 89. SAXON, UNDER PRESSURE, GETS OFF A PRETTY GOOD KICK. ORTEGO IS HIT BEFORE HE HAS A CHANCE TO CATCH IT. DOWN QUICKLY AND HAMMERED BY VINCE ALBRITTON, NUMBER 36. >> AND THAT'S A PENALTY THERE AGAINST THE COWBOYS BECAUSE WHETHER THERE'S A FAIR CATCH OR NOT, THE GUY COMING DOWN THE FIELD HAS TO LET THE RETURN MAN CATCH THE BALL. >> INTERFERENCE WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A FAIR CATCH, NUMBER 36. 15-YARD PENALTY. FIRST DOWN. >> FIRST DOWN, BEARS. A 38-YARD PUNT BY SAXON. BUT THEN THE 15-YARD PENALTY AT THE END OF IT. ORTEGO WAS HIT AS HE TRIED TO MAKE THE CATCH OF THE PUNT. 6:23 LEFT IN THE FIRST QUARTER. NO SCORE AS YET. >> 0-0 AT TEXAS STADIUM. COWBOYS AND THE UNBEATEN BEARS. STEVE FULLER, THE QUARTERBACK. FIRST AND 10, BEARS, THEIR OWN 29-YARD LINE. FULLER GOES BACK TO THROW ON FIRST DOWN. INTENDED FOR TIGHT END TIM WRIGHTMAN, WHO WAS STUMBLING, GOT HIS FEET TANGLED UP WITH SOMEONE -- MICHAEL DOWNS, I THINK. >> I THINK -- AND THAT'S WHAT STEVE FULLER IS COMPLAINING ABOUT. THAT'S WHAT WRIGHTMAN WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT. I THINK THE GUY THAT HE GOT TANGLED UP WITH WAS DEXTOR CLINKSCALE. CLINKSCALE WAS COVERING HIM THERE, AND IT LOOKED LIKE -- YOU KNOW, IT WAS A MAN-TO-MAN COVERAGE. THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW IS WRIGHTMAN GOES DOWN, AND CLINKSCALE WAS UP. >> AND IT'S SECOND AND 10. >> CLINKSCALE'S SAYING, "THAT'S A WAY TO COVER HIM." >> LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, THEIR OWN 28. THE BEARS OPERATE FROM THERE. FULLER STARTS HIS MAN IN MOTION, WRIGHTMAN. WALTER PAYTON HIT RIGHT AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. IT'S 0-0 BETWEEN THE COWBOYS AND THE BEARS. CLOCK RUNNING IN THE FIRST QUARTER. OUT OF THE SPREAD. WILLIE GAULT JUGGLING, HAD IT FOR JUST A MOMENT, WAS HIT BY RON FELLOWS. NEVER HAD POSSESSION. COWBOY FANS THINK IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A FUMBLE, BUT IT'S NOT RULED THAT WAY, AND THE BEARS WILL HAVE TO PUNT. >> THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT THEY'RE GONNA HAVE ALL DAY. WATCH, PAT. THEY HAVE A DEFENSIVE BACK HERE, A DEFENSIVE BACK HERE, A DEFENSIVE BACK IN THE MIDDLE. SO WHAT THEY'RE DOING ON PASSING DOWNS IS THEY'RE BRINGING SEVEN GUYS. AND I'LL TELL YOU, UNTIL THEY GET THAT SITUATION CLEARED UP -- LOOK, FROM THE OUTSIDE, FROM THE MIDDLE, STRAIGHT UP THE MIDDLE -- IT'S GOING TO BE A TOUGH PASSING DAY FOR STEVE FULLER. >> MAURY BUFORD BACK TO PUNT NOW. BEARS UNABLE TO MOVE IT. ALMOST TIPPED, BUT AWAY TO BATES. BATES LETS IT GO OUT OF BOUNDS AT ABOUT THE 24-YARD LINE, WHERE THE COWBOYS WILL TAKE OVER. JESSE PENN WAS THE COWBOY WHO PUT THE PRESSURE ON MAURY BUFORD. A PUNT OF 46 YARDS, AND IT'S STILL 0-0. >> RANDY WHITE OVER ON THE DALLAS SIDELINE. 5:23 LEFT TO PLAY, FIRST QUARTER. NO SCORE AS YET. DANNY WHITE, THE QUARTERBACK, IS 4 OUT OF 9. COUNTER PLAY TO DORSETT. NOWHERE TO GO. WILLIAM PERRY ON THE STOP. DORSETT SLOW TO GET UP. >> YOU KNOW, IT'S INTERESTING -- PERRY GOT ALL THIS TALK ABOUT, YOU KNOW, CATCHING THE PASS, BLOCKING ON THE GOAL LINE, AND, YOU KNOW, SCORING. WELL, WHERE HE'S GOING TO MAKE IT AS A PRO IS RIGHT HERE, OF COURSE, ON DEFENSE. AND HE IS REALLY COMING ALONG. I MEAN, YOU WATCH HIM THERE. HE TAKES ON A BLOCKER, COMES RIGHT DOWN THE LINE. BUT THE THING IS, WHEN HE TAKES ON A BLOCKER, HE CAN KNOCK THAT BLOCKER INTO THE BACKFIELD, AND IT'S TOUGH TO RUN AGAINST A PENETRATING DEFENSE. >> HE AND RICHARD DENT DID AN EXCELLENT JOB OF STRINGING THAT ONE OUT. HERE GOES DORSETT IN MOTION ON SECOND AND 12. NOW HE COMES BACK THIS WAY. WHITE. CHASED BY DENT. COSBIE, WITH A ONE-HANDED GRAB, GETS ENOUGH FOR A FIRST DOWN. SINGLETARY DROPPED HIM. COSBIE GOT 13. SPECTACULAR CATCH. >> YOU WONDER HOW DANNY WHITE GOT IT THROUGH ANYTHING ON THAT PLAY BECAUSE, AS YOU'LL SEE BACK HERE, AS HE STARTS BACK, THERE'S A BUNCH OF BEAR GUYS FORMING A FENCE AROUND HIM. AND HE HAS TO FIND SOME OPEN STAKES IN THAT FENCE TO GET IT THROUGH TO GET IT TO COSBIE. WATCH, HE HAS THEM FROM THE LEFT, FROM THE RIGHT. HAMPTON FLYING THROUGH THE AIR RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE. AND HOW HE GOT THAT BALL THROUGH THAT, I HAVE NO IDEA. >> COSBIE MADE THE CATCH. DALLAS GOT THE FIRST DOWN. BUT CREDIT THAT ONE, AGAIN, TO AN EXCELLENT EFFORT BY DANNY WHITE. DORSETT IS THE LONE SET BACK. AND THEY COME WITH A BLITZ. WHITE HAS TO SCRAMBLE. TO RENFRO. FUMBLE. BEARS GET IT. THEY FUMBLE. IT'S LOOSE. GARY FENCIK HAD A HANDLE FOR A MINUTE, AND FINALLY THE BEARS DO COME UP WITH THE BALL. MIKE RICHARDSON MADE THE HIT THAT CAUSED IT, AND FENCIK FINALLY CAME UP WITH THE BALL. >> THAT WAS SOME PLAY BY MIKE RICHARDSON. FIRST OF ALL, HE MADE THE TACKLE. THEN HE KNOCKED THE BALL OUT. THEN HE RECOVERED THE BALL. THEN HE FUMBLED THE BALL. AND FINALLY GARY FENCIK CAME UP WITH IT. GOOD EFFORT HERE BY WHITE. FINDS RENFRO HERE. NOW, WATCH RICHARDSON COME IN. CRACK -- HE KNOCKED THE BALL OUT WITH HIS LEFT HAND. NOW HE COMES HERE AND PICKS IT UP -- HECK OF A PLAY. HE GETS HIT -- WHAP! THE BALL GOES OUT AND RIGHT INTO GARY FENCIK. BEARS' BALL, PRETTY GOOD POSITION. >> 45-YARD LINE OF DALLAS. FIRST AND 10, AND HERE'S PAYTON HAMMERING RIGHT SIDE. GOT A YARD, THAT'S ALL. ED JONES WAS THE FIRST MAN TO MAKE THE HIT, WITH THE HELP FROM MIKE HEGMAN. >> YOU KNOW WHAT I WISH? YOU CAN'T DO IT, BUT IT'S A SILLY THING. I WISH THESE DEFENSES COULD PLAY EACH OTHER. >> WOULDN'T THAT BE FUN? >> I'D LIKE TO SEE TOO TALL GO AGAINST McMICHAEL. I'D LIKE TO SEE LIKE A DAN HAMPTON GO AGAINST A RANDY WHITE. YOU KNOW, SEE A BILL BATES RUN INTO A FENCIK. THEY DON'T DO IT THAT WAY, BUT, YOU KNOW, COULD BE, BECAUSE THESE DEFENSES ARE TWO TOUGH-HOMBRE DEFENSES. >> SECOND DOWN AND 8. THE BEARS ARE AT THE COWBOY 43 1/2-YARD LINE. FULLER STARTS SUHEY IN MOTION. TO PAYTON. PAYTON OVER THE LEFT SIDE. THE WHOLE THING SORT OF MOVES FORWARD, AND PAYTON GOT ABOUT 5 BEFORE RANDY WHITE AND EUGENE LOCKHART BRING HIM DOWN. OTHER SCORES -- BUFFALO 7-3 OVER CLEVELAND NOW IN THE FIRST. TAMPA BAY 14-0 OVER THE JETS. THE BUCCANEERS CAN SCORE SOME POINTS. PITTSBURGH 3-0 OVER HOUSTON. PHILADELPHIA 14-0 OVER ST. LOUIS. AND 10-0, INDIANAPOLIS OVER MIAMI. THIRD DOWN AND 3. THIS IS GENTRY IN MOTION THIS TIME. AND FULLER RETREATS OUT OF THE SHOTGUN. GENTRY IS OPEN. NOT TO BE. DENNIS THURMAN WAS THE NEAREST DALLAS DEFENDER. RANDY WHITE PUT THE HEAT ON. >> WELL, YOU CAN SEE AGAIN THE 4-0 DEFENSE OF THE COWBOYS. CLINKSCALE OUT HERE. NOW THEY'RE NOT COMING ON THE ALL-OUT BLITZ. THEY GET UP THERE. THEY FAKE IT. THEY'RE JUST BRINGING FOUR. NOW, THE GUY IN THIS SITUATION -- ALTHOUGH THEY STILL GOT THERE, DIDN'T THEY? BUT THEY WERE TRYING TO GET THE BALL TO GENTRY. THAT'S WHAT MIKE DITKA WAS SAYING -- "HE'S GOING TO BE OUR FOURTH RECEIVER TODAY." >> SO THE BEARS GET THE TURNOVER BUT CAN'T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. THIS IS BUFORD BACK TO PUNT. BILL BATES STANDING BACK AT ABOUT THE 10. SEE WHERE THEY MARK IT. AT THE 2 1/2. BUFORD GETS IT OUT OF BOUNDS. >> COWBOYS! WE'RE NUMBER ONE! WE'RE GONNA BEAT THOSE BEARS! >> YOU KNOW, WE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT THAT 4-0 DEFENSE OF THE COWBOYS. NOW, WHAT THEY DO IS, HERE'S A DEFENSIVE BACK, HERE'S ONE, HERE'S ONE. THEN THEY PUT A SAFETY HERE. THEN THEY PUT ANOTHER CORNER HERE THAT WOULD COVER THE BACK OUT OF HERE. THIS IS WHAT THE BEARS LOOK LIKE -- SHOTGUN. THEN THEY HAVE ANOTHER SAFETY HERE. THEN THEY HAVE A DEFENSIVE BACK HERE. SO 4-0 MEANS ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR DEFENSIVE LINEMEN. HERE'S THREE DEFENSIVE BACKS, THREE MORE ON THIS SIDE, ONE IN THE MIDDLE. SO IT'S FOUR DEFENSIVE LINEMEN AND SEVEN DEFENSIVE BACKS, AND THAT'S THE DEFENSE THAT THE BEARS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO SOLVE TODAY. >> THUS FAR, THEY HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT. WHITE DEEP IN HIS OWN END ZONE. THE BALL IS BATTED UP IN THE AIR. THE BEARS COME UP WITH IT. TOUCHDOWN, CHICAGO. RICHARD DENT... THE BEAR WHO BATTED IT AWAY. AND DAN HAMPTON SCORED THE TOUCHDOWN. BEG YOUR PARDON. HAMPTON BATTED IT AWAY, AND DENT CAME DOWN WITH THE FOOTBALL. >> THAT'S WHAT IT WAS. YOU KNOW, HAMPTON HAD BEEN GETTING CLOSE TO DANNY WHITE ON OTHER PLAYS. REMEMBER THAT ONE THAT HE THREW TO COSBIE AND SAID, "I WONDER HOW HE GOT THROUGH THERE"? WELL, WATCH HIM ON THIS ONE. HE'S COMING FROM THE LEFT END. YOU SEE, HE JUST TAKES THAT -- WHACK -- KNOCKS COOPER OUT. WATCH HIM GET UP IN THE AIR. HE TAPS THAT BALL UP IN THE AIR, KNOCKS IT WAY OUT. NOW, DENT IS RIGHT ON THE GOAL LINE. HE CATCHES IT, MAKES A LITTLE SPINNER, AND BACKS INTO THE END ZONE. BUT HAMPTON HAD BEEN GETTING CLOSE TO DANNY WHITE. >> BUTLER WILL ATTEMPT THE EXTRA POINT, WITH STEVE FULLER HOLDING. AND THE BEARS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BREAK AND BREAK ON TOP 7-0. HERE'S THE TOUCHDOWN AGAIN. >> I'LL TELL YOU, THAT PLAY BY DAN HAMPTON IS SOMETHING. WE SEE HIM RIGHT THERE. WATCH HIM, WHAT HE DOES TO COOPER. HE TAKES HIM, KNOCKS HIM OFF, GETS IN DANNY WHITE'S FACE. THERE'S DENT. HE'S SAYING, "THERE'S THE BALL. JUMP BALL ON THE GOAL LINE. NOW I GOT TO BACK IN. I DON'T GET MANY OF THOSE, BUT I KIND OF LIKE THAT DEAL THERE." >> AND RICHARD DENT SCORES THE TOUCHDOWN AFTER THE DEFLECTION BY DAN HAMPTON. AND IT'S 7-0, CHICAGO, WITH 1:48 LEFT TO PLAY IN THE FIRST QUARTER. >> YOU KNOW, FOR THE COWBOYS, THEY CALL RANDY WHITE "MANSTER" -- YOU KNOW, HALF MAN AND HALF MONSTER. AND THEY CALL HAMPTON "DANSTER" -- YOU KNOW, HALF DAN AND HALF MONSTER. I'LL TELL YOU, HE'S ONE OF THOSE ALL-OUT GUYS. >> TOM LANDRY LOOKING ON. THE BEARS HAVEN'T BEATEN DALLAS SINCE 1971. NOW THEY'RE ON TOP 7-0. RICHARD DENT -- HIS FIRST CAREER TOUCHDOWN. DELIGHTED ABOUT THE SITUATION. >> HE WAS JUST IN POSITION TO DO IT. THE GUY RIGHT NEXT TO HIM, 99, THE GUY WHO'S PATTING HIM THERE, HE'S THE GUY THAT REALLY MADE THE PLAY. YOU KNOW, HE HAS THE WORST-LOOKING HANDS I'VE EVER SEEN. >> HAMPTON. >> YOU KNOW, HE GOT THOSE HANDS, THOSE FINGERS THAT WHEN HE MAKES A FIST, ONLY ABOUT TWO OR THREE FINGERS CLOSE. A BUNCH OF THEM JUST KIND OF HANG UP IN THE AIR. >> BUTLER'S KICKOFF GOES DEEP TO ROBERT LAVETTE. AND LAVETTE SCRAMBLES AROUND TO ABOUT THE 18 BEFORE CLIFF THRIFT IS DOWN TO MAKE THE STOP FOR THE BEARS. >> THAT'S ONE THING ABOUT BEING ON DEFENSE AND SCORING A TOUCHDOWN. YOU ONLY GET TO REST AND GET A LITTLE OXYGEN AND CONGRATULATE EACH OTHER FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, 'CAUSE WHEN YOU SCORE A DEFENSIVE TOUCHDOWN, THEN, BOOM, YOU GOT TO GET RIGHT BACK OUT THERE AGAIN. >> COWBOYS HAVE IT AT THEIR OWN 18. BEARS LEADING 7-0. A 1-YARD TOUCHDOWN ON AN INTERCEPTION BY RICHARD DENT. 1:38 LEFT, FIRST QUARTER. WHITE BACK TO THROW. AND HAMMERED AND SMOTHERED WITH NOTHING OPEN. AND THE PROTECTION JUST COLLAPSED AROUND HIM. >> I'LL TELL YOU, ONE THING ABOUT THIS COWBOY OFFENSIVE LINE -- THEY'RE MORE OF A FINESSE GROUP THAN A STAND -- YOU KNOW, THAN A STANDING BULK GROUP. AND WHAT THIS BEAR DEFENSE IS DOING TO THEM IS JUST GETTING THEM IN THE PITS AND JUST, BOOM -- JUST PUSHING THEM RIGHT BACK INTO WHITE. WATCH IT RIGHT HERE IN THE MIDDLE, WHERE IT COLLAPSES ON THEM. YOU SEE RIGHT HERE? THEY'RE GETTING THE PUSH, PUSH, PUSH, PUSH. NOW, WATCH, THE WHOLE THING COLLAPSES RIGHT THERE AROUND THE QUARTERBACK. AND THERE'S ALL THOSE PACKED JERSEYS DIVING IN ON THERE. >> IT WAS RICHARD DENT WHO FINALLY GOT WHITE DOWN. SECOND AND 16 THE SITUATION NOW. FUMBLES THE PASS FROM CENTER. CAN'T DO ANYTHING WITH IT, AND AGAIN HE'S HAMMERED BY THAT SWARMING BEAR DEFENSE. OTIS WILSON WAS THE FIRST ONE THERE, BUT HE HAD A LOT OF HELP. >> I'LL TELL YOU, ONE THING ABOUT THIS BEAR DEFENSE -- WHEN THEY GET YOU ON THE ROPE, THEY GET YOU GOING BACKWARDS, THEY'RE GOING TO KNOCK YOU ALL THE WAY BACKWARDS. LET'S WATCH THIS. IF WE CAN SEE WHAT THEY DO -- YOU SEE HOW RIGHT HERE IN THE MIDDLE, THEY HAVE THE THREE GUYS? THEY GET THIS BIG PUSH RIGHT THERE. THAT MAKES THIS QUARTERBACK A LITTLE NERVOUS SEEING ALL THIS. BUT WATCH HOW THEY PUSH RIGHT BACK, AND THE GUYS CAN'T HELP. YOU GET A GUY IN THE CENTER, ON BOTH GUARDS, AND THEN YOU JUST COLLAPSE THAT THING, AND THEN YOU BRING THEM FROM THE OUTSIDE, AND THAT PUTS A WHOLE GANG OF GUYS ON YOU. >> AND NOW THEY HAVE FIVE MEN LINED UP THERE IN A POSITION TO COME AT YOU. BUT THEY DON'T. JUST FOUR. WHITE IN THE END ZONE. CHASED OUT OF THE END ZONE. TO NEWSOME. HE GETS SOME ROOM. BUT IT WILL NOT BE ENOUGH FOR A FIRST DOWN. WILBER MARSHALL BROUGHT NEWSOME DOWN. GAIN OF 15. SEE WHAT'S HAPPENED TO DANNY WHITE. HE'S BEEN UNDER PRESSURE ALMOST EVERY TIME HE'S GOTTEN THE BALL FROM CENTER. TWO SACKS, TWO HURRIES, FOUR KNOCKDOWNS, ONE INTERCEPTION -- THAT WAS FOR THE TOUCHDOWN -- AND THREE BATTED BALLS, ONE OF THOSE WHICH LED TO THE TOUCHDOWN. AND THE COWBOYS WILL HAVE TO PUNT. SAXON, NUMBER 4, IS BACK. ORTEGO -- I CALLED HIM OR-TEGO BEFORE. ORTE-GO, THEY TELL, ME IS THE CORRECT PRONUNCIATION. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] END OF THE FIRST QUARTER. THE BEARS LEADING DALLAS 7-0. AND IT'S BEEN DONE ON DEFENSE. THAT'S THE WAY THE BEARS HAVE BEEN GETTING IT DONE. >> MIKE SAXON BACK TO PUNT FOR THE COWBOYS. ORTEGO BACK DEEP FOR THE BEARS. END OVER END. DOWN QUICKLY IS VICTOR SCOTT, THE FIRST MAN THERE. EXCELLENT COVERAGE OF A 40-YARD PUNT BY SAXON. NO RETURN, SO THEY NET 40. RIGHT HERE IT'S THE DALLAS COWBOYS AND CHICAGO BEARS IN ACTION. IT'S CALVIN THOMAS WHO'S ONE OF THE BACKS ALONG WITH PAYTON. THEY THROW IT OUT TO PAYTON, DOES FULLER. EVERSON WALLS COMES UP TO MAKE THE STOP AND CUT PAYTON DOWN AFTER A GAIN OF 3 OR 4. MAKE IT A SECOND-AND-6 SITUATION. BY THE WAY, JIM McMAHON HAS A PROBLEM WITH HIS SHOULDER. HE CAN LIFT HIS ARM, BUT HE CAN'T FOLLOW THROUGH. THAT SEEMS TO BE THE PROBLEM. THEY DON'T KNOW HOW LONG HE'S GONNA BE OUT. >> THEY FINALLY HAVE IT DIAGNOSED, I THINK, AS TENDINITIS IN THE SHOULDER, AND HE HAS SOME CORTISONE IN THAT. PROBABLY WON'T PLAY NEXT WEEK, EITHER. >> RANDY WHITE SMOTHERS PAYTON. HE MIGHT HAVE GOTTEN A YARD, BUT THAT WAS ABOUT IT. IN THE WAY JERSEYS HAVE CHANGED. GO AHEAD, JOHN. I'M SORRY. >> NO, I WAS JUST SAYING, THAT'S A GOOD MATCHUP, TOO. WE TALKED ABOUT HAMPTON, BUT HERE'S ONE. WATCH RANDY WHITE IN THERE, NUMBER 54. HE'S GOING AGAINST MARK BORTZ. I'LL TELL YOU, HE JUST GOES BOOM, JUST TAKES HIM ON, PLAYS HIM OFF, RIGHT DOWN, AND MAKES THE TACKLE. THINK YOU NEED A LITTLE HELP SOMEHOW ON RANDY WHITE. >> MOST PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT. THIRD DOWN. NEED 4 FOR A FIRST. WRIGHTMAN IN MOTION. THIS IS PAYTON AGAIN, CHASED BY JONES, BUT HE'LL HAVE THE FIRST DOWN AND MORE. DON SMEREK AND BILL BATES FINALLY TOOK HIM DOWN, BUT PAYTON'S BEST EFFORT OF THE DAY. GAIN OF 10. >> YOU KNOW, I LIKE THAT LITTLE MOVE THAT PAYTON HAS. IT'S KIND OF HIS SIGNATURE AS A RUNNER. HE DOESN'T NEED A LOT OF THEM. BUT STARTS OUT. HE'S GONNA FOLLOW HIS LEAD. RIGHT THERE -- YOU SEE HOW HE JUST KICKS THAT LEG UP AND THEN THROWS AROUND -- KICKS THAT LEFT LEG AROUND, SWIRLS AROUND, THAT TYPE OF THING? YOU KNOW, I JUST MARVEL AT THAT -- I MEAN, THINGS THAT YOU'VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO DO YOURSELF, AND YOU LOOK AT OTHER PEOPLE DO IT. NOT MANY PEOPLE DO IT, AND YOU SAY, "HEY, THAT WOULD BE FUN TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT." >> AND HE'S BEEN DOING IT SO WELL FOR SO LONG. YOU'RE RIGHT -- THAT'S SORT OF HIS TRADEMARK. HERE'S THE COUNTER PLAY. IT COUNTERS INTO ED JONES. CALVIN THOMAS GETS NOTHING. THE SCORE IS 7-0, BEARS. 1-YARD TOUCHDOWN BY RICHARD DENT -- AN INTERCEPTION. SECOND DOWN AND 10. TO PAYTON. LEFT SIDE, NOT MUCH. MICHAEL DOWNS AND RANDY WHITE AGAIN MAKE THE STOP. JEFF ROHRER GETS CREDIT FOR AN ASSIST. >> YOU KNOW, ONE THING ABOUT THIS DEFENSE OF THE COWBOYS -- YOU HAVE TO GET THOSE TWO SAFETIES BLOCKED -- MICHAEL DOWNS AND DEXTOR CLINKSCALE -- BECAUSE THEY JUST KEY THE RUN. AND IF THEY SEE A RUN TO THEIR SIDE -- IN THAT PLAY, THERE'S DOWNS RIGHT THERE. HE GOES "WHAP," RIGHT UP TO THAT SIDE. IF CLINKSCALE SEES IT ON THE OTHER SIDE -- THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW -- THEN, WHAP, HE TAKES THAT SIDE. AND USUALLY YOU DON'T ASSIGN A BLOCKER TO THOSE GUYS. >> THIRD DOWN -- PASSING SITUATION, BUT THEY DON'T PASS. FULLER ROLLS OUT. CHASED BY WHITE. GETS TO WRIGHTMAN, AND WRIGHTMAN GETS INSIDE THE DALLAS 25 TO ABOUT THE 23. GAIN OF 28. AN EXCELLENT PLAY BY STEVE FULLER. >> THE THING -- ONCE YOU FAKE TO WALTER PAYTON -- WATCH, WALTER PAYTON'S GOING TO COME ACROSS LEFT TO RIGHT. THAT DRAWS A WHOLE GROUP. YOU SEE THE GROUP THAT IT DREW? NOW HE CAN COME OUT AND BOOTLEG. HE HAS RANDY WHITE CHASING HIM. THAT MAKES YOU A LITTLE NERVOUS. BUT HE STILL ZIPPED IT IN THERE TO TIM WRIGHTMAN AS MICHAEL DOWNS DOVE BY. BUT DID YOU SEE THE EFFECT THAT THE FAKE TO PAYTON HAD? PAYTON GOES IN THERE, AND, BOOM, ALL THAT DEFENSE STAYS WITH HIM. >> AND THE BEARS HAVE IT IN GOOD SHAPE. FIRST AND 10 AT THE DALLAS 20. THEY ALREADY LEAD 7-0, AND THEY'RE ON THE MOVE AGAIN. McKINNON WAS THE MAN IN MOTION. OUTSIDE IN THAT DIRECTION, INTENDED FOR McKINNON FROM FULLER. INCOMPLETE. >> YOU KNOW, THAT'S THE TYPE OF THING THAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT EARLIER THAT MIKE DITKA WAS SAYING, "WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO RUN. NOW ONCE WE ESTABLISH WE CAN DO THAT AND THEY HAVE TO BE WORRIED ABOUT WALTER PAYTON, NOW WE CAN FAKE TO PAYTON, COME OUT ON A BOOTLEG OR SOME MOVEMENT, AND HAVE A CHANCE TO COMPLETE PASSES." THAT IS HIS TOTAL GAME PLAN. THAT IS HIS QUARTERBACK THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IN THERE. >> THAT'S McMAHON. >> PAT, HAS A BAD SHOULDER. >> FULLER IS 3 OUT OF 9. JUST HIT THAT BIG ONE TO WRIGHTMAN A MINUTE AGO TO GET THEM DOWN IN THIS SHAPE. PITCHOUT TO PAYTON. PAYTON CHASED AND HAMMERED BY RON FELLOWS. HE GOT A COUPLE OF YARDS, BUT FELLOWS UP IN GOOD POSITION AND MADE A GOOD TACKLE. >> RON FELLOWS WAS HANDING OUT CIGARS YESTERDAY. HIS WIFE HAD A BABY -- RON JR., I GUESS IT IS. BUT THE THING THAT FELLOWS DID ON THAT PLAY WITH PAYTON IS HE GOT LOW. PAYTON WAS REALLY GOING TO UNLOAD ON HIM. LET'S SEE IF WE CAN WATCH IT AGAIN. PAYTON WAS GONNA UNLOAD ON HIM, WHICH HE BELIEVES. PAYTON BELIEVES, "IF YOU'RE GONNA TACKLE ME, I'M GONNA DELIVER A BLOW ON YOU." NOW, WATCH HIM. HE'S GONNA UNLOAD. YOU SEE WHAT FELLOWS DID? HE GOT UNDERNEATH THE LOAD SO HE COULDN'T GET UNLOADED UPON. >> THIRD AND 8. COWBOYS SHOWING BLITZ. THEY GOT EVERYBODY UP THERE. HERE THEY COME. ALL OVER FULLER. FUMBLE. THEY'RE GONNA SAY HE WAS DOWN. DOWNS TRIED TO PICK IT UP. HE COULDN'T. COWBOYS WERE IN IN A HURRY. VICTOR SCOTT WAS ALL OVER STEVE FULLER BEFORE HE HAD A CHANCE TO DO ANYTHING. >> I'LL TELL YOU, LET'S WATCH WHAT HAPPENED. VICTOR SCOTT'S GOING TO COME RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE HERE. HE'S UNBLOCKED, AND HE GETS TO FULLER BEFORE FULLER CAN SET UP. WATCH HIM -- STRAIGHT UP THE MIDDLE. YOU SEE, UNBLOCKED RIGHT THERE. HE GETS HIM. THE BALL COMES OUT AS HE'S GOING DOWN. NOW, I THINK WHAT THE REFEREE DID WAS HE CALLED THAT IN THE GRASP, BUT HE CALLED IT AWFULLY QUICKLY. >> FULLER WILL HOLD FOR THE ROOKIE KEVIN BUTLER. 1 OUT OF 4 FROM THIS RANGE. THIS ONE IS GONNA BE 44 YARDS. BUTLER HAMMERS. AND HITS. AND IT'S 10-0, AS BUTLER HAMMERS IT HOME FROM 44 YARDS OUT. THE BEARS LEAD THE COWBOYS 10-0. >> THE BEARS IN CONFERENCE WITH DICK STANFEL, WHO COACHES THEIR OFFENSIVE LINE, OVER ON THE SIDELINE. >> I THINK DICK'S TRYING TO GET DOWN THOSE BLITZES. YOU SEE IN THERE ON THE GROUND, THEY HAD THE POLAROIDS OF IT. HE HAD THE PICTURES THERE, THE POLAROID SHOTS OF WHAT THEY WERE DOING, AND THEY'RE TRYING TO GET THEIR BLITZ PROTECTION AGAINST THE COWBOYS STRAIGHTENED OUT. >> BUTLER LINES THE KICKOFF TO LAVETTE, AND LAVETTE COMES OUT OF THE PACK OUTSIDE THE 30 TO ABOUT THE 31. >> I WOULD THINK SOMEWHERE HERE, PAT, THE COWBOYS WILL GO BACK TO RUNNING TONY DORSETT. YOU KNOW, THE FIRST PLAY HE CARRIED THE BALL, HE GAINED 22 YARDS. AND SINCE THEN, HE'S ONLY CARRIED SIX TIMES, I THINK, FOR 17. BUT I THINK THAT HE'S ONE OF THOSE GUYS YOU HAVE TO KEEP -- LIKE RUSSIAN ROULETTE, YOU HAVE TO KEEP GOING AND GOING. YOU DON'T KNOW WHICH ONE WILL BE THE BIG ONE, BUT YOU HAVE TO KEEP TRYING TO GET THE BALL TO HIM. >> LIKE 25 OR 30 TIMES A GAME. >> YEAH, AND THEN MAYBE 10 OR 15 MORE PASSES. >> SOONER OR LATER HE'S GONNA BREAK IT. BEARS SHIFT THEIR DEFENSE AGAIN, AND WHITE GOES BACK TO THROW, UNDER PRESSURE. THEY GET THE SCREEN PASS TO NEWSOME. NEWSOME. GETS OUTSIDE THE 40, A PICKUP OF ABOUT 5 OR 6, BEFORE WILBER MARSHALL CUTS TIMMY NEWSOME DOWN. >> I DON'T KNOW THAT I'VE EVER SEEN A DEFENSE PLAY WITH AS MUCH INTENSITY AS THIS BEAR DEFENSE DOES. AND I'M NOT JUST TALKING ABOUT TODAY -- WATCHING THEM ON FILM AND STUFF. WHEN THEY SEE A PLAY LIKE THAT, A SCREEN, BOOM, THEY GET EVERY BLACK HELMET TO IT. >> THEY LOOK SO VERY SURE OF WHAT THEY'RE DOING, WHICH IS A TRIBUTE TO THEM AND TO THEIR COACH BUDDY RYAN. SECOND DOWN. WHITE BACK TO THROW, UNDER PRESSURE. HE HAS NOTHING. LUCKY TO STAY ALIVE. INTENDED FOR DOUG COSBIE. OTIS WILSON WAS RIGHT IN HIS FACE FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. AND WHITE IS DOWN. >> I'LL TELL YOU, WHITE, YOU KNOW, THAT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME. I MEAN, HE HAS REALLY BEEN TAKING A BEATING HERE TODAY. I MEAN, THEY JUST HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE -- AS WE WATCH IT AGAIN. OTIS WILSON COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE HERE. NO ONE BLOCKS HIM. THERE'S NO ONE ASSIGNED TO HIM. BUT I'LL TELL YOU, THEY'VE JUST BEEN CONVERGING AND JUST HANGING AND KNOCKING DANNY WHITE DOWN EVERY TIME THAT HE'S GONE BACK. >> JUST THINKING ABOUT WHAT TOM LANDRY SAID YESTERDAY. HE THOUGHT HE COULD TAKE A HIT UNLESS SOMEBODY POUNDED HIM TO THE GROUND LIKE THAT, AND THAT'S JUST WHAT HAPPENED. >> DANNY WHITE IS UP AND OFF UNDER HIS OWN POWER, OVER ON THE SIDELINE, STILL BEING LOOKED AT. BUT GARY HOGEBOOM IS THE QUARTERBACK ON THIRD DOWN. HOGEBOOM HAS SOME TIME. GETS RID OF IT IN THE DIRECTION OF DORSETT. DUERSON HAD A SHOT AT IT, BUT IT'S INCOMPLETE, AND THE COWBOYS WILL HAVE TO PUNT. >> YOU KNOW, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE 46 DEFENSE. NOW, HERE'S WHAT IT IS. SEE, THEY PUT THE THREE LINEMEN RIGHT IN HERE, COVER BOTH GUARDS AND THE CENTER. THEN THEY HAVE THEIR MIDDLE LINEBACKER, 50, SINGLETARY, HERE, WHO'S FREE TO GO UP AND DOWN. THEY BRING THEIR STRONG SAFETY, PLAY HIM HERE AS A WEAK BACKER. THEY PUT TWO BACKERS OVER THE TIGHT END. NOW, ON THE SACK, THAT WAS HOW WILSON GOT THERE. HE CAME FROM THIS SIDE, AND NO ONE BLOCKED HIM. YOU SEE THEY HAVE EIGHT GUYS UP IN FRONT -- TOUGH DEFENSE. >> SAXON GETS OFF A HIGH, HANGING PUNT. ORTEGO SIGNALS FOR THE FAIR CATCH. 4.7 HANG TIME, NO RETURN, BUT ONLY A 33-YARD PUNT. AND THE BEARS WILL TAKE OVER. LOOKING AT DANNY WHITE OVER ON THE SIDELINE, CHECKING WITH HIM. MEANTIME, LET'S CHECK OUT NEXT WEEK'S SCHEDULE. ATLANTA WILL BE AT CHICAGO TO PLAY THE BEARS. DETROIT AGAINST TAMPA BAY, NEW ORLEANS-MINNESOTA. WASHINGTON GOES TO PITTSBURGH. THAT'S NEXT WEEK. CHECK YOUR LOCAL LISTINGS. PHILADELPHIA-DALLAS, GREEN BAY-LOS ANGELES, AND THE GIANTS-ST. LOUIS -- THOSE ARE THE LATE GAMES. SO CHECK AND SEE WHAT YOU'LL SEE. THE BEARS' PAYTON IS HAMMERED BY RANDY WHITE. >> PAT, WE JUST GOT WORD THAT DANNY WHITE HAS A MINOR CONCUSSION. YOU CAN SEE THAT THEY HAVE THE ICE UP THERE AROUND THE NECK. BUT WHEN HE WAS THROWN TO THE TURF, HE CAME UP WITH A CONCUSSION. YOU KNOW, AND NOW THEY'RE GOING THROUGH AND CHECKING AND SO ON. BUT I'LL TELL YOU, IT WASN'T ONLY THAT PLAY. I THINK WE CAN SEE FROM HERE THAT HE REALLY TOOK A BEATING TODAY. >> EVEN WHEN HE GOT RID OF THE BALL, HE TOOK A BEATING. SECOND AND 8. 8 MINUTES LEFT TO PLAY IN THE FIRST HALF. SUHEY WAS THE MAN IN MOTION. FULLER BACK TO THROW. PULLS IT DOWN. DOES THROW. GETS IT TO EMERY MOOREHEAD. FIRST-DOWN YARDAGE FOR THE BEARS. OUT TO THEIR OWN 45. GAIN OF 17. >> I'LL TELL YOU, STEVE FULLER SURE LOOKS A LOT MORE CONFIDENT. NOW, YOU SEE THAT? YOU GET A COUPLE OF THINGS GOING. YOUR DEFENSE GIVE YOU YOUR LIFE. YOUR DEFENSE IS COMING ALONG. AND NOW THINGS START COMING INTO PLAY. SEE, YOUR OFFENSIVE LINE GETS YOU SOME TIME, SOME PASS PROTECTION. YOUR RECEIVERS ARE WORKING DOWN THERE. YOU CAN FIND GUYS. AND IT'S A DIFFERENT GAME RIGHT NOW FOR STEVE FULLER. >> FIRST DOWN FOR FULLER AND THE BEARS AT THEIR OWN 44. SUHEY IS THE MAN IN MOTION. PAYTON'S THE MAN WITH THE BALL. COWBOYS OUT QUICKLY. MICHAEL DOWNS. AND DEXTOR CLINKSCALE TAKES HIM OUT OF BOUNDS. >> CLINKSCALE'S OVER THERE. HE'S TELLING THOSE GUYS -- YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU'RE DOWN AND YOU'RE ON THE OTHER TEAM'S BENCH, YOU GOT TO DO SOME TALKING, 'CAUSE IF YOU DON'T DO SOME TALKING, THEY'LL START JUMPING ON YOU. CLINKSCALE MADE THAT PLAY PRETTY WELL. HE COMES UP. MATT SUHEY'S GOING TO COME ACROSS HERE IN MOTION. WATCH HIM. HE'S GONNA BLOCK CLINKSCALE. HERE HE COMES RIGHT HERE. CLINKSCALE TAKES ON SUHEY -- PRETTY GOOD BLOCK. DOES A SPIN OUT OF IT. NOW HE COMES AND THROWS THAT THING IN THERE ON PAYTON, TRIES NOT TO GRAB A FACE MASK. NOW HE'S SAYING, "I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING." SEE, PUT HIS HANDS OUT. HE'S ON THE BEAR BENCH. YOU START TALKING -- "I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. I'M OKAY. HE'S OKAY. I LIKE HIM." DON'T WANT THOSE GUYS TO JUMP ON YOU. >> HE GOT A LITTLE EXTRA BOOST AT THE END OF THAT FROM LOCKHART. SECOND DOWN... AND ABOUT 5. FULLER GOES BACK TO THROW. UNDER PRESSURE IS FULLER. CHASED AND DOWN TO THE GROUND BY JEFFCOAT. BUT ED JONES AND RANDY WHITE MADE HIM PULL THE BALL DOWN AND COME OUT OF THE POCKET. >> I'LL TELL YOU, FULLER -- FULLER MADE QUITE A MOVE THERE ON ED "TOO TALL" JONES. JONES WAS COMING FIRST, AND OLD STEVE FULLER GAVE HIM A LITTLE MOVE, AND TOO TALL WENT TO THE GROUND. BUT HE SURE DIDN'T GET MUCH AFTER THAT. WATCH FROM THE OUTSIDE NOW. HERE COMES TOO TALL. HE STARTS TO FEEL -- SEE, HE GAVE HIM -- BOOM. TOO TALL JUST WENT SLIDING BY. AND IT DIDN'T DO HIM A LOT OF GOOD. THERE WAS JEFFCOAT AND RANDY WHITE AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER GUYS. >> HE WOUND UP LOSING ABOUT A YARD. SO IT'LL MAKE IT THIRD AND 6. 6 1/2 MINUTES LEFT TO PLAY, FIRST HALF. WRIGHTMAN IS THE MAN IN MOTION. THEY AGAIN GIVE TO PAYTON. AND PAYTON GOES TO THE FIRST DOWN, BUT OUT COMES THE YELLOW FLAG. PENALTY MARKER DOWN. >> AND THAT'S IN THE AREA OF HOLDING, ALTHOUGH DEXTOR CLINKSCALE WAS ALL UPSET THERE WITH THE OFFICIALS. THEY FINALLY GOT HIM OUT OF THERE. >> NUMBER 85 OFFENSE, ILLEGAL BLOCK IN THE BACK. 10-YARD PENALTY. >> DENNIS McKINNON IS CALLED FOR THE ILLEGAL BLOCK. >> THAT'S PROBABLY WHY CLINKSCALE WAS MAD. HE WAS PROBABLY BLOCKING CLINKSCALE. OF COURSE, YOU KNOW, THE WIDE RECEIVER DENNIS McKINNON CAN'T BLOCK HIM BELOW THE WAIST, NOR CAN HE BLOCK IN THE BACK WHEN HE COMES IN HERE. SEE, HE'S COMING IN WHAT THEY CALL A CRACKBACK. YOU SEE, AND IT WAS CLINKSCALE, TOO. AND HE NOT ONLY BLOCKED HIM FROM BEHIND -- OR HIT CLINKSCALE, BUT HE CLIPPED HIM. THAT WAS EVERYTHING THAT WAS WRONG WITH THAT. HAD IT BEEN LOWER, THAT'S YOUR OLD-FASHIONED CLIP. >> BACK TO THIRD AND 11. THAT WAS AN AUTHENTIC VIOLATION. GENTRY IS THE MAN IN MOTION. FULLER SPRINTS OUT TO THE RIGHT, CHASED BY BATES. McKINNON, THE INTENDED RECEIVER. INCOMPLETE. MAURY BUFORD WILL COME ON FOR THE BEARS. BATES GOES BACK DEEP FOR THE COWBOYS. McKINNON COMES OUT. BUFORD'S DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB TODAY. BATES -- ONE PUNT RETURN THAT HE WAS ABLE TO FIELD. HE GOT BACK 12 YARDS. >> LOOK AT BATES THERE. HE'S THERE. HE'S BREATHING HEAVILY, HAS A LITTLE BLOOD ON THE PANTS AND STUFF THERE, SOME STUFF TAPED UP AND STUFF. >> BATES AT THE 18. TO ABOUT THE 30 BEFORE SHAUN GAYLE TRIPS HIM UP. BATES DOESN'T GO EAST AND WEST VERY MUCH. HE HEADS IT UPFIELD. 5:49 LEFT TO PLAY, FIRST HALF. >> I THINK THE BEARS HAVE COME UP WITH AN ANSWER TO THIS 4-0. SEE, HERE'S THE THREE DEFENSIVE BACKS. HERE'S THE THIRD ONE, COMING ON A BLITZ. WHAT THE BEARS DID IS TAKE THE BALL AND GO OUTSIDE OF IT -- YOU KNOW, TRY AND PACK EVERYTHING DOWN AND THEN GET OUTSIDE. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS AN INCOMPLETE PASS, I THINK IT'S A PRETTY GOOD IDEA. WATCH -- HERE COMES THE BLITZ FROM THE OUTSIDE, CLINKSCALE COMING. GOES BACK TO FULLER. HE JUST SPRINTS OUTSIDE. THEY PACK EVERYTHING IN. NOW AGAINST THAT SEVEN-MAN BLITZ HE HAS A CHANCE. I THINK THAT'S A PRETTY GOOD ANSWER TO THAT THING. >> THERE'S THE LAST MAN WHO CAME UP IN THAT BLITZ -- DEXTOR CLINKSCALE. >> AND I'M SURE THEY'RE TELLING DEXTOR, "LOOK, WHEN YOU COME FROM THAT OUTSIDE NOW, KEEP CONTAINMENT. GET UP THE FIELD. DON'T LET FULLER OUTSIDE YOU." >> HOGEBOOM IS STILL THE DALLAS QUARTERBACK. DANNY WHITE, AGAIN, HAD A SLIGHT CONCUSSION. HERE IS OTIS WILSON ALL OVER HIM. AND THERE'S THE INTERCEPTION. MIKE RICHARDSON. TOUCHDOWN, BEARS. A RETURN OF 36 YARDS. AND THE PRESSURE IS REALLY WHAT DID IT. >> THE PRESSURE IS WHAT'S BEEN DOING IT ALL DAY. I MEAN, YOU TALK ABOUT A GROUP, THIS BEAR DEFENSE COMES AND GETS AFTER YOU. I MEAN, THERE'S BEEN GUYS IN DANNY WHITE'S FACE ALL DAY. NOW IT'S GARY DUERSON. OTIS WILSON. AND THEN HE'S JUST THROWING IT UP THERE. RICHARDSON WAS JUST STANDING THERE. I DON'T THINK HOGEBOOM SAW RICHARDSON. I DON'T THINK HE SAW A RECEIVER. I DON'T THINK HE SAW ANYTHING EXCEPT NUMBER 55. >> ABOUT THE FIRST THING HE'S GONNA SEE IS THE EXTRA POINT. RICHARDSON -- 36-YARD TOUCHDOWN INTERCEPTION RETURN. THE BEARS LEAD. KEVIN BUTLER FOR THE EXTRA POINT. FULLER HOLDING. BUTLER'S GOOD. IT'S 17-0, THE BEARS OVER THE COWBOYS. >> YOU KNOW, THAT WAS THE SECOND TIME THAT OTIS WILSON CAME, AND IT WAS THE SECOND TIME THAT THEY DIDN'T GET HIM BLOCKED. THIS ONE THEY COME UP WITH AN INTERCEPTION. WE SEE RICHARDSON HERE. NO RECEIVER IN THE AREA, UNLESS IT'S RENFRO LATE. AND ON THE PLAY DANNY WHITE GOT HURT, THAT WAS AGAIN OTIS WILSON PUTTING THE PRESSURE. >> WE GOT UNNECESSARY-ROUGHNESS FOULS, CONTINUOUS ACTION. THE POINT COUNTS. 63 OFFENSE. 47 DEFENSE. THEY OFFSET AT THE SUCCEEDING SPOT. THE POINT COUNTS. >> YOU UNDERSTAND THAT? >> YEAH, I THINK THAT TWO GUYS WERE JUST FIGHTING. THAT WOULD BE 63 OFFENSE. >> AND 47 DEFENSE. >> YEAH, THAT WAS JAY HILGENBERG WOULD BE THE OFFENSIVE GUY. HE WAS THE CENTER. 47 DEFENSE WOULD HAVE BEEN DEXTOR CLINKSCALE. AND HE MUST HAVE BEEN UP THERE ON THAT EXTRA-POINT BLOCK, AND THEY JUST KEPT PLAYING AFTER THE THING WAS OVER, SLUGGING AND STUFF. >> THERE'S THE MAN WHO SCORED THE TOUCHDOWN -- MIKE RICHARDSON. DALLAS HAS THREE TURNOVERS. TWO OF THEM HAVE BEEN INTERCEPTIONS AND TWO OF THEM RETURNED FOR TOUCHDOWNS. THE BEARS HAVE NONE. THAT'S THE STORY OF THIS FIRST HALF. 5:41 LEFT IN THE FIRST HALF. >> BUTLER WILL KICK OFF. LINES A SHOT. ROBERT LAVETTE FIELDS IT ABOUT A YARD DEEP IN THE END ZONE. LAVETTE... HAD SOME ROOM FOR A MOMENT. GETS OUTSIDE THE 30. KNOCKED OUT OF BOUNDS BY SHAUN GAYLE. RETURN OF 30 BY LAVETTE. THE COWBOYS WILL TAKE OVER JUST INSIDE THEIR OWN 30. AND GARY HOGEBOOM COMES BACK AS THE QUARTERBACK. DANNY WHITE LEAVING WITH ICE STILL ON HIS NECK. >> HE'S PROBABLY TRYING TO GET THE COBWEBS OUT OF THERE, AND I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH FUN THIS IS FOR A BACKUP QUARTERBACK WHEN HE'S GETTING THIS KIND OF PRESSURE. >> OR ANY QUARTERBACK. HOGEBOOM STEPS UP INTO THE POCKET. GOING DEEP TO TONY HILL. INTERCEPTED AGAIN. RICHARDSON COMES UP WITH THE INTERCEPTION. LESLIE FRAZIER. BEG YOUR PARDON. FRAZIER WAS BACK THERE WITH HIM. FRAZIER STILL ON HIS FEET, STILL GOING. AND THE BEARS TAKE OVER AT THEIR OWN 48. >> I'LL TELL YOU, THE BEARS ARE IN A POSITION TO PUT THIS THING ON ICE RIGHT NOW. HOGEBOOM JUST TRYING TO GET A BIG PLAY, TRYING TO THROW DEEP TO TONY HILL. OVERTHROWS HIM. THERE'S LESLIE FRAZIER. TONY HILL CAN'T MAKE THE TACKLE THERE, SO FRAZIER'S GOING TO GAIN ABOUT 30 MORE YARDS. THERE'S NOT MANY TACKLERS ON THIS DALLAS COWBOY OFFENSIVE TEAM. AND THEY DON'T GET HIM DOWN TILL HE GETS CLOSE TO MIDFIELD. I'LL TELL YOU, THE BEARS REALLY HAVE THE COWBOYS GOING BACKWARDS. THEY'RE REALLY WHIPPING THEM EVERY WAY YOU CAN BE WHIPPED FROM EVERY DIRECTION. >> FOUR TURNOVERS NOW FOR THE COWBOYS, AND A RETURN OF 33 YARDS BY FRAZIER. BEARS LEADING 17-0. THEY GIVE TO PAYTON. PAYTON IS HAMMERED BY JOHN DUTTON AFTER A GAIN OF ABOUT 1. YOU CERTAINLY CAN'T FAULT -- IF YOU'RE A DALLAS FAN, YOU CAN'T FAULT THE DALLAS DEFENSE. THEY'VE DONE A GOOD JOB. IT'S JUST THAT THE BEARS HAVE INTIMIDATED THE COWBOYS OFFENSE. >> I'LL TELL YOU, THEY HAVE, AND NOW THE BEARS ARE IN A POSITION THAT, YOU KNOW, McMAHON BEING OUT, THEIR QUARTERBACK BEING OUT IS KIND OF ACADEMIC, BECAUSE WITH A 17-0 LEAD, THEY'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE BALL, YOU KNOW, TO HAVE THAT TYPE OF OFFENSE THAT THEY'RE REALLY GEARED TO PLAY TODAY. >> AND THEY'VE BEEN OUTSTANDING IN THE SECOND HALF. IF YOU'RE LOOKING AHEAD, THEY HAVE REALLY BEEN OUTSTANDING ON DEFENSE IN THE SECOND HALF. SECOND DOWN. FULLER BACK TO THROW. HAS A MAN -- SUHEY WIDE OPEN. SUHEY DOWN THE SIDELINE. SUHEY TO ABOUT THE 16 AND OUT OF BOUNDS THERE. RON FELLOWS KNOCKED HIM OUT OF BOUNDS. >> I'LL TELL YOU, THAT'S SOMETHING. AGAIN THAT COMES FROM WALTER PAYTON. WATCH -- FAKE TO WALTER PAYTON, MAKE THE COWBOYS THINK IT'S RUN. HERE COMES DEXTOR CLINKSCALE, THE STRONG SAFETY, UP. SUHEY, WHO YOU WOULD THINK WOULD BE A BLOCKER, BOOM, HE RUNS RIGHT BY CLINKSCALE AND UP THE SIDELINE. SEE, THAT WAS A FAKE, AND THE GUY THAT THEY WANTED TO FAKE WAS WALTER PAYTON. THE GUY THEY WANTED TO AFFECT WAS DEXTOR CLINKSCALE TO GET SUHEY OPEN. >> THEY AFFECTED THE WHOLE COWBOY DEFENSE WITH THAT MANEUVER. FIRST DOWN, BEARS. THEY'RE AT THE DALLAS 16. CHICAGO LEADING 17-0 AND ON THE MOVE AGAIN. FULLER. TO WILLIE GAULT. IT'LL BE FIRST AND GOAL AT ABOUT THE 2. FELLOWS ON THE TACKLE. FULLER GETTING BETTER AND MOVING EVERYTHING. AND HERE COMES WILLIAM PERRY INTO THE OFFENSIVE LINEUP, THE REFRIGERATOR. >> I'LL TELL YOU, HE'S ALL OF OUR HERO. WE NEEDED SOMETHING LIKE THIS. YOU KNOW, WE GOT -- YOU KNOW, THERE'S A GROUP -- BAD BODIES AND SO ON. YOU KIND OF HANG AROUND. ALWAYS BEEN THE SKINNY GUYS GETTING ALL THIS STUFF. WE NEED A BIG GUY -- YOU KNOW, GET THOSE JERSEYS UP THERE, GET HIM IN THE BACKFIELD, LET HIM SCORE A TOUCHDOWN, LET HIM BLOCK. PAYTON TELLS HIM WHERE TO GO. FULLER'S TELLING HIM WHERE TO GO. LOOK, THEY'RE SWITCHING. UH-OH, THEY FOULED IT UP. >> HE DIDN'T KNOW WHERE TO GO. >> THE REFRIGERATOR'S BEEN PLAYING TOO MUCH DEFENSE. THEY GOT OUT THERE. THEY GOT THE REFRIGERATOR DELIVERED. THEY JUST DIDN'T KNOW WHICH WALL IT WENT ON. YOU SEE THAT? HE WAS PLAYING FULLBACK. THEN HE WENT TO HALFBACK, THEN BACK TO FULLBACK. THEY GOT HIM INTO PLACE BUT JUST DIDN'T KNOW WHERE TO PUT HIM. >> NOTICE HE DIDN'T COME OVER TO THE SIDELINE. >> NO. LET THAT BRAIN TRUST OVER THERE, LET THAT MIKE DITKA -- AND HE'LL TALK IT OVER AND FULLER. LET'S WATCH IT AGAIN. HE KNEW HE WAS GONNA BE IN THE BACKFIELD, YEAH. THEY SAY, "WHERE DO WE PUT THIS GUY?" PAYTON SAYS, "LET'S PUT HIM OVER HERE. LET'S PUT IT RIGHT OVER HERE." FULLER SAYS, "NO, I DON'T WANT IT OVER THERE. I WANT IT -- I WANT YOU -- PUT IT BACK OVER HERE. YEAH, PUT IT BACK HERE. WELL, I DON'T LIKE IT THERE, EITHER. LET'S JUST TAKE A TIME-OUT AND GET THIS DEAL STRAIGHTENED OUT." WHERE DO YOU PUT THE SINK? >> WELL, THEY WANTED A FREEZER, AND THEY GOT THE REFRIGERATOR. THEY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHERE TO PUT HIM. >> DITKA'S SAYING, "WELL." >> MIKE'S GOT IT FIGURED OUT. >> YOU KNOW, IT'S GONNA BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT THE COWBOYS DO ABOUT THIS NOW BECAUSE THEY'VE SEEN IT. THEY KNOW IT'S THERE. THE COWBOYS IN THIS SITUATION USE TWO MIDDLE LINEBACKERS -- EUGENE LOCKHART AND STEVE DeOSSIE. I THINK THERE, PROBABLY ONE OF THOSE GUYS ARE GOING TO BE THE GUY THAT TAKES ON THE REFRIGERATOR. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE RANDY WHITE BACK THERE. I MEAN, THAT WOULD BE ONE THAT THE COLLISION WOULD MEASURE LIKE 93. >> ON THE RICHTER SCALE. >> ON ANY SCALE -- YEAH, JUST ON A SCALE, JUST REGISTER 93. >> MIGHT REGISTER MORE THAN THAT. THAT'S PAYTON IN MOTION. THEY HAND OFF TO PERRY. PERRY ROLLS TO ABOUT THE 1. HEGMAN TRIPPED HIM UP. AND HE'S ABOUT A FOOT SHY OF THAT TOUCHDOWN. >> WHAT DID PERRY DO TO THE 1? HE ROLLED TO THE 1. WATCH HIM. HE HAS A GOOD START -- GOOD, QUICK START. HE HAS A LITTLE EXTEN-- I THINK HE ROLLED IN THE END ZONE. OH, NO, THE BALL -- SEE, THE BALL'S IN HIS LEFT HAND. LOOK, WILLIAM, PUT THE BALL IN YOUR RIGHT HAND, YOU WOULD HAVE HAD A TOUCHDOWN. HE HAD THE BALL IN THE LEFT HAND, AND HE LEFT THE BALL OUTSIDE THE END ZONE. >> WILLIAM PERRY IS BACK THERE WITH PAYTON AGAIN. LET'S SEE WHAT HE DOES. FULLER GOES OVER THE TOP FOR THE TOUCHDOWN. AND THE BEARS MOVE OUT AHEAD 23-0. >> I KNOW ONE THING -- WE WERE TALKING TO JIM COVERT, THE LEFT TACKLE, AND HE SAID, "WHEN PERRY'S ON MY SIDE, THE ONLY THING I DO IS GET LOW." THERE'S COVERT. HE'S NUMBER 74. PERRY WAS ON HIS SIDE, AND COVERT DID GET LOW. LOOK AT THAT -- LEARNING HOW YOU WALK OFF THE FIELD -- FIVE RIGHT-HANDED, FIVE LEFT-HANDED, FIVE HERE, DOUBLE FIVE. >> THERE'S JIM COVERT. >> YEAH. HE WAS GOING TO GET LOW. YOU KNOW, THE GUY THAT HAD TO TAKE ON PERRY ON THAT PLAY WAS MICHAEL DOWNS. >> WE'LL SHOW YOU THAT IN JUST A MINUTE. KEVIN BUTLER FOR THE EXTRA POINT, WITH FULLER HOLDING. AND IT'S 24-0, CHICAGO OVER DALLAS. HERE HE GOES. >> WATCH PERRY. HE'S GONNA DIVE OFF HERE TO THE LEFT SIDE. HE DOESN'T HAVE TO MAKE A LOT OF CONTACT. HE JUST GIVES OLD DOWNS A LITTLE HIT, BUT HE JUST SPINS RIGHT AROUND. DOWNS IS GOING, "WHERE'D THE BALLCARRIER GO?" WELL, IT WAS JUST A QUARTERBACK SNEAK, MICHAEL. >> TURNOVERS, AGAIN, HAVE BEEN THE STORY TODAY. DALLAS TURNOVERS -- THEY FUMBLED. THAT DIDN'T HURT THEM TOO MUCH. THEY GOT THE INTERCEPTION BY RICHARD DENT. THAT WAS A TOUCHDOWN. THEY GOT THE INTERCEPTION BY RICHARDSON. THAT WAS A TOUCHDOWN. NOW THEY JUST GOT ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN AFTER AN INTERCEPTION BY FRAZIER. >> YOU KNOW, YOU CAN LOOK AT THAT TWO WAYS. YOU CAN SAY THAT'S 21 POINTS OF MISCUES BY THE COWBOYS, BUT I WOULD LOOK AT IT ANOTHER WAY -- THAT'S 21 POINTS THAT MY DEFENSE HAS GOTTEN FOR ME. >> IT HAS BEEN PRESSURE FROM THE BEARS DEFENSE THAT'S CAUSED ALL THOSE TURNOVERS, THE TWO INTERCEPTIONS, CERTAINLY -- THE THREE INTERCEPTIONS. THEY'RE ALL OVER THE DALLAS QUARTERBACK. TIME OF POSSESSION, BY THE WAY, IN THE SECOND QUARTER -- THE BEARS HAVE HAD IT 10:03, DALLAS ONLY 1:59. 2:58 LEFT TO PLAY IN THE FIRST HALF. DEEP FOR THE COWBOYS WOULD BE ROBERT LAVETTE. HE RETREATS ABOUT 9 YARDS DEEP IN THE END ZONE AND DECIDES LET'S DON'T BRING THIS ONE OUT. DALLAS WILL START FROM THEIR OWN 20. DANNY WHITE, BY THE WAY, WAS UP ON THE SIDELINES THROWING A MINUTE AGO, BUT HOGEBOOM IS THE QUARTERBACK. JIM McMAHON. HIS REACTION TO THAT LAST BEAR TOUCHDOWN. >> LOOK AT THOSE PANTS THAT HE'S WEARING. THOSE THINGS HAVE BEEN THROUGH THE LAUNDRY A COUPLE TIMES. THEY'VE BEEN THROUGH SOME WASHERS, DRYERS, THROUGH A COUPLE REFRIGERATORS, PROBABLY. >> COWBOYS' BALL, THEIR OWN 20. THAT'S GONZALEZ IN MOTION. AND HOGEBOOM BACK TO THROW, IF HE HAS TIME. HE DOES. WIDE OPEN -- FRED CORNWELL. CORNWELL STAYS ON HIS FEET, IS FINALLY HAMMERED OUT OF BOUNDS BY MARSHALL, BUT IT'S ENOUGH FOR A DALLAS FIRST DOWN. A GAIN OF 33. >> IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE THE COWBOYS HAVE GOTTEN ANYTHING GOING. THEY ONLY HAD 6 YARDS OF OFFENSE IN THE SECOND QUARTER. SEE, NOW WHAT THEY DID IS THEY GOT THAT DEFENSE PACKED IN THERE, SO, AGAIN -- SO HOGEBOOM COULD GET TO THE OUTSIDE AND FIND FRED CORNWELL. THAT'S THE BIG THING. I MEAN, THOSE RUSHES, THAT PRESSURE'S COMING UP THE MIDDLE SO FIERCELY THAT THOSE QUARTERBACKS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO GET TO THE OUTSIDE. >> HOGEBOOM OPERATES THIS TIME OUT OF THE SPREAD FORMATION. 2:43 LEFT, FIRST HALF. HERE COME THE BEARS AGAIN. TO TONY HILL. INCOMPLETE. THEY HAD TONY DOUBLED. RICHARDSON AND FENCIK BACK THERE WITH HIM. >> YOU KNOW, ONE THING, I GUESS, THAT REALLY HURTS THE COWBOYS HERE, BESIDES NOT BEING ABLE TO HANDLE THIS RUSH, IS THE FACT THAT WHEN YOU'RE DOWN BY 24, IT'S TOUGH TO KEEP A RUNNING GAME GOING. SO AS FAR AS A RUNNER, YOU'VE KIND OF ELIMINATED DORSETT FROM THE GAME AS A RUNNER. >> NEWSOME AND DORSETT WERE THE RUNNING BACKS. NOW NEWSOME MOVES UP TO THE RIGHT. IT'S SECOND AND 10. THAT'S NEWSOME IN MOTION. HOGEBOOM BACKPEDALING. PERRY PUT THE PRESSURE ON THIS TIME. PASS IS THROWN TO LEON GONZALEZ, WHO CAN'T FIND A HANDLE. IT'S INCOMPLETE. >> YOU KNOW, I THINK AS WE WATCH LESLIE FRAZIER THERE, THE CORNER, TO MAKE THIS 46 DEFENSE THAT WE SHOWED, TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE, THE ONE THING YOU HAVE TO HAVE IS TWO CORNERS WHO CAN GET OUT THERE, BE ON AN ISLAND, AND COVER WELL. AND WHEN THEY GOT THESE TWO GUYS -- WHEN THEY GOT FRAZIER ON THIS SIDE AND RICHARDSON ON THE OTHER SIDE, THAT'S WHAT MADE THIS DEFENSE POSSIBLE. THEN ALL THESE OTHER GUYS UP IN THERE, THEY MAKE IT GO. >> THOSE TWO CAN COVER MAN-TO-MAN BY THEMSELVES. THIRD AND 10. HOGEBOOM DOES HAVE TIME THIS TIME. TO NEWSOME. NEWSOME MAKES A REMARKABLE CATCH. BURL TOLER, WHO'S THE OFFICIAL ON THAT SIDE, SAID HE WAS JUGGLING IT WHEN HE WENT OUT OF BOUNDS, AND IT'S RULED INCOMPLETE. >> I'LL TELL YOU, OLD GARY HOGEBOOM WAS PROBABLY SO HAPPY TO SEE OTIS WILSON COVERING INSTEAD OF BLITZING HIM FROM THAT RIGHT SIDE THAT HE DECIDED TO THROW ON HIM. SO HE THREW TO THE GUY HE WAS COVERING. NEWSOME HAD THE BALL BUT JUST DIDN'T HAVE CONTROL. SEE, IT JUST WAS POPPING OUT THERE RIGHT AT THE END. >> SO SAXON COMES ON TO PUNT. HIS FIFTH OF THE AFTERNOON. ORTEGO BACK DEEP FOR THE BEARS. THIS ONE BOUNCES AT ABOUT THE 15 AND FINALLY BOUNCES BACK TO THE 20 BEFORE THEY CAN GET IT DOWN. NOT A VERY GOOD KICK, NOT A VERY GOOD HALF FOR THE HOME-STANDING DALLAS COWBOYS. THE BEARS LEADING 24-0. >> THE BEARS HAVE KIND OF HAD THINGS THEIR OWN WAY THIS ENTIRE SEASON, HAVEN'T THEY? WHEN YOU WALK IN, YOU'RE FLIRTING A 10-0 DEAL WITH YOU, THAT'S A PRETTY GOOD YEAR. >> FULLER BACK TO THROW AND TRYING FOR MORE. UP THE MIDDLE TO McKINNON. OUTSIDE THE 40, ABOUT THE 42 BEFORE MICHAEL DOWNS TAKES HIM DOWN. GAIN OF 23. FULLER LOOKING SHARPER AND SHARPER. >> YOU KNOW, IT'S FUNNY. YOU COME OUT EARLY AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN, AND THEN YOU ESTABLISH THINGS. I THINK THAT THE BEARS HAVE ESTABLISHED THAT, "WE'RE WHIPPING YOU THIS FIRST HALF." >> 24-0 -- THAT'S A WHIPPING. >> BEARS LEADING THE COWBOYS 24-0. AND THAT'S THE BEAR DEFENSE -- MOST OF THEM, AT LEAST. THEY'VE DONE SOME JOB. 24-0, THEY LEAD WITH 2 MINUTES REMAINING, FIRST HALF. AT THE HALF TODAY, BRENT AND GALE SAYERS WITH SCORES AND HIGHLIGHTS AND A FEATURE ON THE NFL's FOOT SOLDIERS. GALE SAYERS HAS TO BE LIKING THIS. HERE'S PAYTON. TAKES THE FORWARD HAND-OFF FROM FULLER. FLAGS COME FLYING FROM EVERYWHERE. >> WELL, THE GUY THAT KNOCKED IT DOWN WAS RANDY WHITE. HE GOT PENETRATION IN THERE. HE WAS 5 YARDS IN THE BACKFIELD. >> FALSE START, 62 OFFENSE. 5-YARD PENALTY. >> AND THE GUY WHO DID THE FALSE START WAS THE GUY WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BLOCK HIM -- MARK BORTZ. I'LL TELL YOU, RANDY WHITE JUST CAME FLYING THROUGH THERE, AND HE GOT WALTER PAYTON. WATCH 54 RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE. THE BALL'S GOING TO BE SNAPPED. HE'S WATCHING THE BALL. BORTZ STARTS TO MOVE. BORTZ IS PULLING. HE JUST FLIES RIGHT THROUGH THERE AND TAKES THAT HOLE, OR GAP, THAT BORTZ VACATED. I'LL TELL YOU, HE'S TOUGH TO BLOCK BACK UPON. YOU KNOW, WHEN THE GUARD PULLS, YOU GET HIM. >> HE TOOK THAYER BACK WITH HIM BACK INTO PAYTON. FULLER HAS THE BALL BATTED AWAY BY RANDY WHITE. WHILE WE HAVE A SECOND, LET'S CHECK OUT SOME OF THE OTHER SCORES AND SEE WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND THE REST OF THE NFL. THAT'S A SHOCKER. THE ATLANTA FALCONS 20-0 OVER THE RAMS. GREEN BAY 17-0 OVER NEW ORLEANS. LYNN DICKEY'S THROWN A TOUCHDOWN PASS OR TWO. BUFFALO 7-3 OVER CLEVELAND. THE JETS, AFTER FALLING BEHIND TAMPA BAY, HAVE TAKEN COMMAND OF THAT ONE 31-14. THEY'RE STILL IN THE SECOND QUARTER. THEY DIDN'T HAVE A POWER FAILURE. PITTSBURGH 10, HOUSTON 0, HALFTIME. PHILADELPHIA AND ST. LOUIS TIED UP AT 14. 13-13 THE DOLPHINS AND INDIANAPOLIS. FULLER FAKED THAT HAND-OFF. SCRAMBLES HIMSELF. SLIDES WITH FIRST-DOWN YARDAGE IN MIND AND GETS IT. MAYBE, MAYBE NOT. MAYBE HE STARTED THE SLIDE A LITTLE TOO SOON. >> YOU KNOW, AND I THINK ALL THIS STUFF IS REALLY POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF WALTER PAYTON. LET'S WATCH IT. HERE'S PAYTON. PAYTON FAKES THIS WAY. THE DEFENSE GOES THIS WAY, AND FULLER KEEPS IT BACK THIS WAY ON A BOOTLEG. BUT WATCH NUMBER 34. WHEN HE STARTS TO THE LEFT, WATCH WHAT IT DOES TO THE DEFENSE. YOU SEE THAT? THEY ALL GO WITH HIM. NOW YOU COME OUT HERE, AND IT'S ALL VACANT THERE. AND THEN FULLER CAN GET UP THERE AND GET CLOSE TO A FIRST DOWN. HE DID THAT OLD SLIDE A LITTLE TOO SOON TO GET THE FIRST DOWN, BUT MAYBE NOT TOO SOON TO AVOID SOME COLLISIONS. >> A GAIN OF 13. THE BEARS TAKE A TIME-OUT. THEY HAVE ONLY ONE REMAINING. BUT IT'S THIRD AND SHORT -- THIRD AND ABOUT A YARD AND A HALF. CALL IT 2. FULLER OVER ON THE SIDELINE WITH DITKA. >> YOU KNOW, I'M SURE THAT MIKE DITKA WOULD LIKE TO GET ANOTHER ONE HERE BEFORE HE GOES IN AT HALFTIME. HE PROBABLY WON'T NEED IT, BUT AS A COACH, YOU NEVER THINK YOU HAVE TOO MANY. I MEAN, HERE YOU ARE IN THE FIRST HALF, 24-0. THE THING YOU WANT -- YOU DON'T WANT YOUR TEAM TO LET DOWN. YOU DON'T WANT ANYONE TO GET SATISFIED. I KNOW WHAT HE'S GONNA TELL THEM AT HALFTIME. HE'S GONNA TELL THEM, "HEY, LOOK, GUYS, THE SCORE'S 0-0." NOW, HE'S GONNA SAY THE SAME THING -- "0-0. LET'S TRY AND GET SOMETHING BACK." >> THIRD DOWN AND 2. FULLER OUT OF THE SPREAD. HAS TIME, TAKES OFF HIMSELF, AND HAS THE FIRST DOWN. HE DOESN'T MIND DOING THAT. >> NO, THAT'S THE THING THAT THE COWBOYS WERE TELLING US YESTERDAY -- THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FULLER AND McMAHON. THEY SAID McMAHON THROWS THE BALL A LITTLE BETTER. FULLER IS A BETTER SCRAMBLER AND HARDER TO CONTAIN. >> FULLER, IN MANY CASES, IS LOOKING TO RUN. THIS IS SUHEY WITH THE BALL. AND BILL BATES BROUGHT HIM DOWN. >> WHAT THE BEARS WOULD PROBABLY LIKE, IF THEY DON'T GET ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN HERE, THEY'D LIKE A SHOT AT A FIELD GOAL. THEY'RE ON THE 45. THEY PROBABLY NEED 10 OR 15 MORE YARDS TO BE IN THIS GUY'S RANGE RIGHT HERE. >> THAT'S KEVIN BUTLER. AND IN COLLEGE, PARTICULARLY -- HE'S A ROOKIE -- BUT FROM 60 YARDS, HE WAS A THREAT. SECOND AND 12. FULLER. FIRING. MAN'S OPEN. PASS IS PICKED OFF BY BILL BATES. BOUNCED OFF WILLIE GAULT, I BELIEVE. KEN MARGERUM WAS THE BEAR RECEIVER THAT HAD THE BALL RICOCHET OFF HIS PADS, AND BATES COMES UP WITH THE REBOUND. >> THAT WAS A GOOD THROW BY FULLER HERE. AND YOU'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENED IS USUALLY -- YOU ALWAYS WANT THE RECEIVER TO CATCH THE BALL OUT IN FRONT. NOW, THERE'S WILLIE GAULT THERE. YOU SEE NOW. NOW, HE BRINGS HIS HANDS IN TOO CLOSE TO HIS BODY, YOU SEE. AND HE HAD HIS HANDS RIGHT NEXT TO HIS SHOULDER PADS. SO AS THE BALL HIT HIS HANDS, IT ALSO HIT HIS SHOULDER PADS. THEN IT BOUNCED RIGHT UP IN THE AIR. >> AND MARGERUM WAS THE MAN WHO MADE THE TACKLE. THE PASS DID NOT BOUNCE OFF HIM. GARY HOGEBOOM, THE DALLAS QUARTERBACK. 29 SECONDS REMAINING, FIRST HALF. HOGEBOOM UP THE MIDDLE. INTENDED FOR RENFRO. INTENDED FOR LEON GONZALEZ. MIKE RICHARDSON MADE THE DEFLECTION. >> AND I THINK THAT'S THE THING THAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT -- THE CORNERS, AND THAT TIME IT WAS MIKE RICHARDSON. WE'D SEEN IT BEFORE WITH FRAZIER. THEY'RE JUST OUT THERE MAN-TO-MAN. AND THEY CAN BE OUT HERE ISOLATED LIKE THIS. THEY DON'T HAVE HELP IN THE OUTSIDE. THEY DON'T HAVE ANYONE BUMPING HIM, NO HELP INSIDE. IT'S JUST YOU AGAINST HIM. NOW, IF YOU CAN DO THAT WITH YOUR CORNERS, THEN YOU ARE FREE TO BRING YOUR LINEBACKERS, HELP WITH YOUR SAFETIES, 'CAUSE YOU DON'T NEED HELP. >> HOGEBOOM CHASED. TRIES TO THROW THE SCREEN PASS. GETS IT TO DORSETT, WHO HAS A LITTLE BIT OF ROOM. DORSETT GETS OUT TO ABOUT THE 45. FENCIK TRIPPED HIM UP, WITH HELP FROM SINGLETARY. 14 SECONDS REMAIN IN THE FIRST HALF. THE COWBOYS TAKE THE TIME-OUT. THAT'S THEIR FIRST ONE. >> OF COURSE, AND THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS WE REMEMBER LAST YEAR. REMEMBER, WE DID THIS GAME IN CHICAGO, AND THAT, AGAIN, WAS A BIG PLAY. IT WAS A SCREEN PLAY WHERE YOU LET THE RUSH COME, LET THE RUSH GET BY THE LINEMEN, SEND THE LINEMEN OUT TO THE LEFT, DOWN THE LINE, THROW THE BALL OVER THE RUSHERS TO YOUR RECEIVER, GET THE BLOCKERS OUT IN FRONT, OUTSIDE, AND THEN YOU HAVE A CHANCE FOR A PLAY. LAST YEAR, DORSETT RAN THAT THING 70 YARDS AGAINST THEM, AND THAT WAS REALLY THE PLAY THAT BEAT THEM. >> THAT WAS EARLY IN THE GAME AND SORT OF BROKE IT OPEN. TIME-OUTS REMAINING -- DALLAS HAS TWO. THE BEARS HAVE ONE OF THEIRS. 14 SECONDS REMAINING. BEARS LEADING 24-0. >> OF COURSE, THAT'S TOUGH WHEN YOU'RE PLAYING A DEFENSE THAT'S SO GOOD AND YOU GOT TO GO IN AT HALFTIME AND SAY, "HEY, THE ONLY THING WE GOT GOING HERE IS THE SCREEN PASS." OOH, YOU NEED A BIGGER GROCERY LIST THAN THAT. >> MORE ROOM IN THE REFRIGERATOR. >> YEAH, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS. >> 14 SECONDS REMAINING, FIRST HALF. CHICAGO, 24, DALLAS, 0. COWBOYS TIED FOR FIRST PLACE IN THE NFC EAST WITH THE GIANTS, WHO PLAY TOMORROW NIGHT. HOGEBOOM. TO TONY HILL. A FLAG IS DOWN. LESLIE FRAZIER WAS THE DEFENDER. >> I THINK LESLIE FRAZIER WAS ADMITTING THAT IT WAS HIM. HE WAS POINTING. I'VE NEVER SEEN A DEFENSIVE GUY DO THAT. I'VE NEVER SEEN A GUY POINT TO HIMSELF, UNLESS HE MEANT, "HE WAS PUSHING ME." >> 21, DEFENSE. FIRST DOWN. >> FIRST DOWN, DALLAS. >> I DON'T THINK HE WAS ADMITTING IT. YEAH, YEAH. SEE, HE WAS GIVING HIM, "HEY, HE WAS PUSHING ME." BUT HE POINTED TO HIMSELF LIKE, "YEP, YEP, YEP, YEP, IT WAS ME. IT WAS ME." I THINK HE WAS SAYING, "YEAH, HE WAS PUSHING ME, ME, ME, ME." YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? >> I THINK THAT ONE COULD HAVE BEEN EITHER WAY. HOGEBOOM THE QUARTERBACK AFTER DANNY WHITE WAS NAILED BY OTIS WILSON AND SUFFERED A SLIGHT CONCUSSION. WE DON'T KNOW WHETHER HE'LL BE BACK OR NOT. GARY HOGEBOOM. THE DALLAS COWBOYS AT THE BEAR 39. HERE COMES THE BEAR BLITZ. HOGEBOOM STANDS. >> I THINK THE WHISTLE BLEW, PAT, BEFORE THE BALL WAS SNAPPED. >> OH, I SEE A FLAG, YEAH. I SEE A FLAG DOWNFIELD. >> DELAY OF GAME. 14, OFFENSE. 5-YARD PENALTY. >> WHAT IT WAS -- THE COWBOYS DIDN'T GET THAT ONE OFF IN TIME, SO THEY BLEW THE WHISTLE. AND IT WAS LUCKY, BECAUSE DUERSON WAS COMING RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE -- DAVE DUERSON, NUMBER 22, AND NO ONE BLOCKED HIM. I MEAN, HE WAS UNTOUCHED. SO I THINK THAT HOGEBOOM WAS PROBABLY HAPPY TO SEE IT. WATCH 22. SEE HIM? HE TIMED THAT BLITZ PERFECTLY. HE'S COMING RIGHT UP THE CHUTE AGAINST HOGEBOOM. I THINK HOGEBOOM WAS SAYING, "THANK GOODNESS THAT WHISTLE WAS BLOWN BECAUSE A BUNCH OF OTHER GUYS WERE COMING." >> HOGEBOOM BACK TO THROW AGAIN. TRIES TO GET AWAY. DOES GET AWAY, AND McMICHAEL TAKES HIM DOWN. THIRD SACK OF A DALLAS QUARTERBACK BY THE BEAR DEFENSE. STEVE McMICHAEL AND TYRONE KEYS LED THAT RUSH. 3 SECONDS LEFT TO PLAY IN THE FIRST HALF. BEARS UP 24-0. >> STEVE McMICHAEL IS ONE OF THOSE TOUGH GUYS, YOU KNOW, THAT PLAYS THAT MIDDLE IN THERE WITH THOSE GUYS, TAKES ON GUYS, DOES STUFF IN THE TRENCHES, FIGHTER, SCRAPPER, ALL THAT TYPE OF THING. HE GETS RIGHT THERE. HE KIND OF MISSES HIM THERE. THEN HE WAITS FOR HIM TO COME BACK AND PUTS THE OLD WRAP ON HIM. >> WENT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS. HE'S BEEN WITH THE BEARS. WEARS THAT PROTECTIVE SHIELD ON HIS HELMET BECAUSE HE HAD A FINGER IN THE EYE LAST WEEK. BUT IT DIDN'T AFFECT HIS PASS RUSH, DID IT? >> YOU SEE, HE HAS TO DO IT HIMSELF. HE HAD TO WIPE THAT THING OFF WITH A TOWEL. SOMEDAY THEY'LL PROBABLY HAVE -- YOU KNOW, SOMEDAY IN FOOTBALL, THEY WILL -- THEY'LL HAVE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ON THOSE DEALS, AND THE GUY WILL GO... AND THE WASHER WILL GO PSH, PSH, PSH, PSH, PSH, PSH. >> YOU THINK SO? >> OH, YEAH. I MEAN, THE WAY THEY'RE GOING. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT? THEY GOT SHIELDS AND THEY HAVE OXYGEN ON THE SIDELINES. THEY PLAY ON ARTIFICIAL TURF. THE STADIUMS HAVE ROOFS ON THEM. THEY GOT ALL THAT STUFF. THEY CAN PUT A WINDSHIELD ON A HELMET. >> SECOND AND 24. THE COWBOYS AT THEIR OWN 46. HOGEBOOM GOING FOR THE BUNDLE. THE BALL ENDS UP ON THE GROUND, INCOMPLETE. KARL POWE WAS THE INTENDED RECEIVER. THE COWBOYS ARE BEING SHUT OUT 24-0 AT THE HALF. IT'S BEEN A FIRST HALF DOMINATED BY DEFENSE, INTERCEPTIONS BY THE BEARS, AND THEY LEAD IT 24-0. >> BEARS IN TOTAL CONTROL. THEY LEAD 24-0 AT TEXAS STADIUM. BUTLER HITS ANOTHER GOOD ONE. LAVETTE ABOUT 2 YARDS DEEP IN THE END ZONE. WILL BRING THIS ONE OUT. JUST GETS BACK TO THE 20. [ CROWD CHEERING ] DANNY WHITE IS COMING BACK AT QUARTERBACK FOR DALLAS. THE REASON FOR THE REACTION. >> I DON'T KNOW THAT THEY MADE THE DECISION UNTIL RIGHT AT THE END. BOTH THE QUARTERBACKS, BOTH DANNY WHITE AND GARY HOGEBOOM, WERE BOTH STANDING NEXT TO LANDRY. BOTH HAD THEIR HELMETS ON. AND I THINK RIGHT AT THE END THERE, TOM LANDRY GAVE DANNY WHITE THE GO-AHEAD. >> FENCIK COMES UP RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE. COWBOYS GIVE TO DORSETT. AND DORSETT ALMOST BREAKS AWAY BUT IS CUT DOWN FROM THE SIDE BY SINGLETARY. LOOKING AT THE DALLAS TIGHT END SITUATION, COSBIE IS NOT STARTING THE SECOND HALF. IT'S CORNWELL. DANNY WHITE IS BACK AT QUARTERBACK. CHRIS SCHULTZ IS AT LEFT TACKLE, REPLACING POZDERAC. COSBIE, WE'RE TOLD, HAS A HEADACHE. AND WE DON'T KNOW IF HE'LL BE BACK OR NOT. SECOND AND 6. DORSETT GOT 4. DORSETT AGAIN. AROUND THE CORNER AND OUT OF BOUNDS BY SINGLETARY ONE MORE TIME. JIM MYERS, ONE OF THE DALLAS COACHES, GOES DOWN. CUT DOWN BY DORSETT. >> DORSETT IS A LINE COACH. AND LINE COACHES ARE USED TO HAVING BODIES FLYING AROUND THEM. THAT'S ONE THING THEY HAD -- THERE'S JIM MYERS. HE'S USED TO HAVING GUYS FLYING AROUND. GUYS A LOT BIGGER THAN HE IS. BUT I THINK ONE THING THAT MAYBE JIM MYERS TALKED ABOUT AND TOM LANDRY TALKED ABOUT -- "WHAT? WE ONLY RAN SIX TIMES IN THE FIRST HALF? DORSETT, THE FIRST TIME HE CARRIED THE BALL, GAINED 22 YARDS?" >> AFTER THAT, THEY WOUND UP WITH -5 YARDS RUSHING. DON'T WIN MANY LIKE THAT. THIS IS DORSETT AGAIN. DORSETT HAMMERS OUT TO ABOUT THE 35. THERE IS DOUG COSBIE OVER ON THE SIDELINE. AGAIN, HE'S NOT STARTING THE SECOND HALF. SAID HE HAD HEADACHES. LEADS THE NFC TIGHT ENDS IN RECEPTIONS, WITH 45. >> KIND OF LOOKS LIKE HE HAS HEADACHES. SOMETIMES YOU CAN TELL SOMEONE -- SEE? HE'S TALKING ABOUT THE BACK OF THIS NECK. HE'S PROBABLY TALKING ABOUT SOME HIT THAT HE MADE OR SOMEHOW HE WAS HIT. >> SECOND AND 5. AT ANY RATE, CORNWELL HAS TAKEN HIS PLACE. THAT IS RENFRO IN MOTION. HERE'S WHITE. BEHIND NEWSOME. AGAIN WHITE WAS UNDER PRESSURE, AND AGAIN HE'S DOWN. >> I'LL TELL YOU, THAT'S THE THING WE TALKED ABOUT AT HALFTIME, PAT. THEY HAVE TO GET OTIS WILSON BLOCKED. I MEAN, THEY THROW AN INTERCEPTION WITH THAT TYPE OF THING. THAT'S THE PLAY THAT KNOCKED DANNY WHITE OUT OF THE GAME. THEY HAVE THIS GUY, OTIS WILSON, COMING FROM THE OUTSIDE LEFT SIDE. AND THEY JUST DON'T GET HIM BLOCKED, AND THEY JUST HAVEN'T HAD ANYONE ON HIM. LET'S SEE IF WE CAN SEE IT. SEE HIM ON THE OUTSIDE? 55. HE'S COMING THERE. THAT TIME, DORSETT WAS SUPPOSED TO BLOCK HIM AND JUST COULDN'T COME UNDER CONTROL. >> THAT LOOKED ALMOST LIKE THE SAME PLAY THAT PUT WHITE OUT IN THE FIRST HALF. THIRD DOWN. HERE THEY ARE AFTER WHITE AGAIN. AND IN THE GRASP OF DAVE DUERSON. FOUR SACKS BY THE BEARS. AND AGAIN THEY JUST DON'T GET HIM BLOCKED. HE DIDN'T BEAT ANYBODY. THEY JUST DIDN'T PICK HIM UP. >> WELL, THAT'S DUERSON. HE'S THE SAFETY. THEY HAVE HIM LISTED AS A STRONG SAFETY, BUT HE PLAYS WEAK SAFETY. AND HE JUST COMES ON THAT ONE, AND THEY DON'T HAVE A BLOCKER FOR HIM. WATCH IT. HE COMES RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE. THEY HAD SINGLETARY AND DUERSON. THE BACK TOOK SINGLETARY, AND THERE WAS NO ONE LEFT FOR DUERSON. >> SAXON BACK TO PUNT. THIS TIME HE GETS OFF A GOOD ONE. THAT'S HIS BEST EFFORT OF THE DAY. ORTEGO BACK FOR THE BEARS. HE IS HIT QUICKLY BY JESSE PENN. 4.7 HANG TIME. A PUNT OF 51 YARDS. A RETURN OF 4. BUT THERE'S A PENALTY MARKER DOWN ON THE PLAY. >> THEY SAY, "WAIT A MINUTE. HOLD ON. WHAT DO WE HAVE THERE?" LOOKS LIKE IT WAS GONNA BE LEAVING EARLY. >> HOLDING. 46, OFFENSE. WE'LL REKICK WITH A 10-YARD PENALTY. >> MM-HMM. >> OR HOLDING. >> TODD FOWLER IS NUMBER 46 FOR THE COWBOYS. AND THEY CALLED HIM FOR HOLDING. THEY'LL PENALIZE THEM 10. AND THE BEARS SHOULD PICK UP SOME VERY VALUABLE YARDS. YOU NEVER KNOW, THOUGH. MIKE DITKA HAS TO BE PRETTY HAPPY ABOUT THE WAY THINGS HAVE DEVELOPED TODAY. >> WELL, THE MORE POINTS THEY SCORE, THE FASTER HE CHEWS THE GUM. AND THEN THE MORE YOU SPIT YOU GET OUT OF IT THE FASTER YOU CHEW IT. SEE, HE HAS 24 POINTS. SO YOU CAN CHEW IT THAT FAST AND GET THAT MUCH SPIT OUT OF IT. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THAT MANY POINTS, YOU DON'T CHEW IT QUITE AS FAST, NOR DO YOU GET THAT MANY OUT THERE. >> IF THEY SCORE ANY MORE, HE MIGHT REALLY WEAR HIMSELF OUT. >> HE'LL REALLY HAVE THAT STUFF GOING THEN. >> ANOTHER GOOD KICK. FIELDED AT THE 45. AND HAMMERED. 4.6 HANG TIME, THIS. JAMES JONES WAS DOWN TO MAKE THE STOP. PUNT OF 44, A RETURN OF 4. SO THEY NET 40. BUT THE BEARS DO GAIN SOME YARDAGE AND BETTER SHAPE. AND THEY LEAD 24-0 ALREADY. >> STEVE FULLER THE QUARTERBACK. GOING DEEP FOR WILLIE GAULT. BATTED AWAY AT THE LAST SECOND BY RON FELLOWS. THAT WAS CLOSE TO BEING ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN. >> WELL, DID YOU SEE RON FELLOWS LOOK UP THERE? HE KNOWS THAT WHEN HE'S RUNNING WITH WILLIE GAULT, HE IS RUNNING WITH A WORLD-CLASS SPRINTER. WILLIE GAULT HAD TO SLOW DOWN A LITTLE FOR THE BALL. BUT FELLOWS WAS THERE AND ABLE TO GET THAT RIGHT HAND IN THERE. AND I'LL TELL YOU, THAT IS WHAT MAKES A GUY LIKE RON FELLOWS NOT SLEEP AT NIGHT -- WHEN YOU KNOW THAT YOU'RE GOING TO PLAY WILLIE GAULT. PLUS THE OTHER THING -- HIS WIFE JUST HAD A BABY THE OTHER DAY. THAT KIND OF MAKES YOU NOT SLEEP AT NIGHT. >> IT WILL. HERE'S PAYTON. PAYTON IS HAMMERED BY DUTTON, AMONG OTHERS. MIKE HEGMAN WAS THERE WITH HIM, ALSO. AND DEXTOR CLINKSCALE. >> YOU KNOW, PAYTON, PAT, IS ABOUT RIGHT NOW 2 YARDS AWAY FROM 1,000 YARDS. I THINK HE NEEDED 5 AT THE START OF THIS DRIVE, AND HE GOT 2 OR 3 THERE. SO HE NEEDS 3 MORE YARDS. >> 14 FOR 46 SO FAR TODAY. THAT IS TRULY A REMARKABLE CAREER FOR THE ALL-TIME YARDAGE LEADER. SUHEY IN MOTION. AND FULLER BACK TO THROW. AND HE HAD EMERY MOOREHEAD. WHO'S POUNDED FROM BEHIND BY CLINKSCALE. A PASS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT. >> I THINK THAT SAME THING HAPPENED THAT HAPPENED TO WILLIE GAULT EARLIER. THEY GET THEIR HANDS A LITTLE TOO CLOSE TO THEIR BODY. AND WHEN THE BALL HITS THEIR HANDS, IT SIMULTANEOUSLY HITS THEIR SHOULDER PAD. AND IT GOES "BOOMP" -- RIGHT OUT. >> SO THAT WILL BRING ON NUMBER 8, MAURY BUFORD. HE HAD A GOOD DAY TODAY. AVERAGED 43.6. THAT'S BILL BATES BACK TO RETURN. BEARS LEADING 24-0. OFF THE SIDE OF BUFORD'S FOOT. HE'S TRYING TO GO OUT OF BOUNDS, AND HE GOT IT DONE. THE BALL GOES INTO THE END ZONE. THE BEARS BAT IT BACKWARDS. AND DOWN IT AT THE 5. I DIDN'T SEE WHO THREW IT BACKWARD. JIM MORRISSEY, NUMBER 51. GOOD PLAY. >> I'LL TELL YOU, IT WAS A GOOD PLAY. THE THING IS, IF HE STEPS ON THE GOAL LINE OR GETS IN THE END ZONE THEN THROWS IT OUT, THEN, OF COURSE, IT GOES TO THE 20. SO HE HAS TO GET DOWN THERE, GET HIS HANDS ON THE BALL -- THERE'S MORRISSEY, 51 -- GET HIS HANDS ON THE BALL BEFORE HE GETS IN THE END ZONE, AND THEN FLIP IT OUT BACKWARDS UNDERNEATH. THAT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING YOU'D GET IN THE NBA. ONE OF THOSE DEALS -- UNDERNEATH, BACKHAND, BEHIND, BACK DOOR. LARRY BIRD WOULD DO A DEAL LIKE THAT -- BACK-DOOR IT. >> BALL COMES OUT TO THE 5, AND THAT'S WHERE THE COWBOYS OFFENSIVE UNIT WILL OPERATE. CORNWELL IS STILL THE TIGHT END. THE GIVE IS TO DORSETT. HE'S ALMOST TACKLED IN THE END ZONE. MANAGES TO GET BACK TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. MIKE SINGLETARY HAD A SHOT AT HIM BACK IN THE END ZONE. IT WAS ALMOST A SAFETY. >> I'LL TELL YOU, MIKE SINGLETARY IS REALLY UPSET ON THAT ONE. BUT IF TONY DORSETT WERE EASY TO TACKLE, MIKE, HE WOULDN'T HAVE DONE WHAT HE'S DONE IN THIS LEAGUE. HE'S LIKE WALTER PAYTON. HE'S ONE OF THOSE GUYS YOU JUST DON'T TACKLE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS PLAY. YOU'RE COMING ACROSS THE BACKFIELD IN THE END ZONE. SINGLETARY'S FREE. HE GETS A HAND ON HIM. GETS ANOTHER HAND. GETS HIM SPUN AROUND. BUT THE BALANCE THAT A TONY DORSETT HAS DOESN'T ALLOW A SINGLETARY TO CATCH HIM. >> THAT WILL MAKE IT SECOND AND 7. THEY GIVE AGAIN TO DORSETT. HE HUSTLES TO ABOUT THE 11. RICHARD DENT, NUMBER 95, TRIPPED HIM UP. >> YOU KNOW, IT'S AN INTERESTING THING HERE, PAT, IN TALKING TO TOM LANDRY YESTERDAY. THEY HAVE THREE GAMES -- THEY PLAY THE BEARS TODAY, AND THEN THEY PLAY PHILADELPHIA AND ST. LOUIS, TWO TEAMS IN HIS DIVISION. HE SAID, "IF I HAD TO LOSE ONE, I WOULD RATHER LOSE TO THE BEARS AND BEAT ST. LOUIS AND PHILADELPHIA IN THE NEXT TWO GAMES BECAUSE THEY'RE OUR DIVISION." I'M NOT SURE THAT THAT HAS ANY EFFECT ON THE WAY THIS GAME IS GOING, BUT IT IS A POINT. >> RIGHT NOW IT MAY BE THE ONLY POINT. THIRD AND 3. WHITE BACK TO THROW. UP THE MIDDLE TO RENFRO. THAT WILL BE ENOUGH FOR A FIRST DOWN. GARY FENCIK MADE THE STOP. >> FENCIK WAS RIGHT THERE. AND HE WAS LOOKING OVER AT THAT MARKER RIGHT AS RENFRO CAUGHT THE BALL. AND THESE GUYS HAVE SO MUCH PRIDE. GUYS LIKE GARY FENCIK -- BEEN IN THE LEAGUE, DEFENSE, UNDEFEATED SEASON -- THAT THEY NOT ONLY WANT A SHUTOUT, THEY DON'T EVEN WANT THESE GUYS TO GET FIRST DOWNS. THEY GET UPSET. "THEY GOT A FIRST DOWN. WE LET THEM OFF THE HOOK." >> IT WAS INTERESTING. HE WAS SAYING LAST NIGHT WHEN WE TALKED TO HIM THAT HE HAD ASKED AT THE MIDWAY POINT BUDDY RYAN, THE DEFENSIVE COACH, TO "EVALUATE ME. HOW AM I DOING? SHOULD I STILL BE PLAYING?" AND HE GOT A PLUS VOTE. HERE IS WHITE. AND NOTHING IS THERE. AS OTIS WILSON AGAIN SACKS DANNY WHITE. DOWN HE GOES, AND DOWN HE STAYS. THAT'S FIVE SACKS. AND WHITE IS DOWN AGAIN. >> AS I SAID, DANNY WHITE HAS REALLY TAKEN A BEATING TODAY. NOT ONLY ON THE ONES THAT HE'S BEEN SACKED, BUT ON ALL OF THEM. 55, OTIS WILSON, COMING HERE FROM THE OUTSIDE. AND RENFRO WAS SUPPOSED TO BLOCK HIM THAT TIME -- MIKE RENFRO. YOU JUST CAN'T GET THE JOB DONE THAT WAY. AND THEY HAVEN'T REALLY BEEN ABLE TO HANDLE OTIS WILSON. >> RENFRO IS OVERMATCHED IN THAT SITUATION. >> TOM LANDRY LOOKS ON WITH SOME DESPAIR. AND GARY HOGEBOOM, WHO FACES THE TOUGH TASK OF REPLACING WHITE AND FACING THAT BEAR DEFENSE. >> HERE'S THE PROBLEM THAT THEY'VE BEEN HAVING. IT'S RIGHT HERE, THIS GUY, OTIS WILSON. NOW, HE'S COMING FROM HERE. AND THEY WANT TO RELEASE THE TIGHT END, SO THERE'S NO ONE TO BLOCK HIM. WHAT THEY TRIED THAT TIME IS BRING MIKE RENFRO, A WIDE RECEIVER, IN MOTION DOWN HERE AND GET OTIS WILSON. OF COURSE, THAT'S A MISMATCH. AND HE STILL GOT IN THERE AND GOT DANNY WHITE. BUT WATCH HIM. SEE, THEY DON'T HAVE ANYONE TO BLOCK HIM OUT HERE. THEY BRING RENFRO IN. THAT'S GONNA BE A MISMATCH. DOWN. RIGHT BACK UP. RIGHT INTO DANNY WHITE AND JUST TOOK HIM RIGHT OVER ON HIS BACK. >> SECOND DOWN NOW. THEY NEED 18. COWBOYS BACKED UP TO THEIR OWN 8. HERE'S HOGEBOOM. TRYING TO THROW OUT OF THE END ZONE. HE GETS IT OUT TO TONY HILL. AND NOTHING DOING FOR TONY. TO ABOUT THE 12. THERE'S DANNY WHITE. FIVE TIMES HE'S BEEN SACKED -- OR THE DALLAS QUARTERBACKS HAVE. EIGHT HURRIES, EIGHT KNOCKDOWNS, THREE INTERCEPTIONS, AND THREE BATTED BALLS. >> AND, OF COURSE, THOSE KNOCKDOWNS ARE NOT THE BALL BEING KNOCKED DOWN. THAT WAS HIS BEING KNOCKED DOWN. SO YOU TAKE EIGHT KNOCKDOWNS AND FIVE SACKS. THAT'S 13 TIMES THAT THEY'VE BEEN WAPPED TO THE TURF. >> YOU LOOK AT THOSE FIGURES, AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO TELL WHAT THE SCORE IS. THIRD AND 15. BEARS ARE LEADING 24-0. HOGEBOOM FEELING THE PRESSURE. McMICHAEL CHASING HIM. HOGEBOOM SCRAMBLES FREE. FIRES DEEP. INTENDED FOR KARL POWE. INCOMPLETE. BUT A PENALTY FLAG GOES DOWN. MIKE RICHARDSON WAS THE BEAR DEFENDER. HOGEBOOM BOUGHT SOME TIME ON HIS OWN. THIS IS GONNA BE AGAINST THE BEARS. >> GONNA BE AGAINST MIKE RICHARDSON. HE SAW THAT ALL THE WAY. JUST DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. I THINK WHAT HAPPENED IS HE JUST HIT POWE BEFORE THE BALL GOT THERE. SOMETIMES IT'S HARD FOR THOSE DEFENSIVE BACKS TO WAIT. AND MIKE RICHARDSON COULDN'T WAIT. >> INTERFERENCE. 27, DEFENSE. FIRST DOWN. >> LET'S WATCH IT. YOU SEE HE'S THERE. NOW HE GOES FOR THE BALL. AND UNLESS HE HIT HIM WITH THAT LEFT ARM OR HAD THE LEFT HAND ON HIM, IT LOOKED LIKE PRETTY GOOD DEFENSE TO ME. >> THE RESULT IS A 44-YARD PENALTY. AND THE COWBOYS MOVE TO THE BEARS 44. CHICAGO LEADING NEVERTHELESS. HOGEBOOM FIRES THROUGH THE HANDS OF MIKE RENFRO. INCOMPLETE. >> AND HOGEBOOM ENDED UP ON THE SEAT OF HIS PANTS AGAIN. AND THESE BEAR RUSHERS ARE REALLY GIVING THESE QUARTERBACKS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT. THAT TIME IT WAS RICHARD DENT COMING FROM THE RIGHT SIDE THAT GOT HOGEBOOM. BUT EVEN WHEN THEY GET RID OF THE BALL, THEY'RE STILL ENDING UP LOOKING OUT THEIR EARHOLES. >> AND THE UPDATE ON DANNY WHITE IS THAT HE IS BEING X-RAYED AT THIS MOMENT HERE IN THE STADIUM FOR A JAMMED NECK. MILD CONCUSSION, WE HEARD IN THE FIRST HALF. NOW IT'S A JAMMED NECK. AND HERE'S HOGEBOOM. TRYING TO SET UP A SCREEN PASS. HE CAN'T FIND ANYBODY THERE. FINALLY THROWS TO DORSETT. AND THE BEARS HAD IT DIAGNOSED AND COVERED JUST PERFECTLY. AND A FLAG GOES DOWN. >> THE FLAG HAS TO BE AN ILLEGAL LINEMAN DOWNFIELD. THAT WILL HAPPEN ON A SCREEN TO YOU SOMETIMES. YOU GET YOUR LINEMEN OUT THERE. GLEN TITENSOR WAS OUT THERE. AND IF THEY GET UP BEYOND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, THEN THEY'RE ILLEGAL LINEMEN DOWNFIELD. >> GARY FENCIK LOOKING OVER TO THE SIDE TO BUDDY RYAN AGAIN. DISCUSSING WITH GENE BARTH, THE REFEREE. THERE'S BUDDY RYAN. WHAT A JOB HE'S DONE, HUH, JOHN? >> I'LL TELL YOU, HE'S THE ARCHITECT OF THIS DEFENSE. >> NUMBER 65. 10-YARD PENALTY. WE'LL REPEAT THE SECOND DOWN. >> HE'S THE ARCHITECT OF THIS DEFENSE. THEY CALL IT THE 46 DEFENSE. NOW EVERYONE IN THE LEAGUE IS USING IT, AND THEY CALL IT A BEAR LOOK. SOME TEAMS JUST CALL IT THEIR BEAR DEFENSE OR THE BEAR LOOK. SOME TEAMS CALL IT THE DIAMOND LOOK. BUT THIS IS THE GUY. BUDDY RYAN IS THE GUY THAT INVENTED THIS DEFENSE. >> AND IT WAS NAMED AFTER ONE OF HIS DEFENSIVE BACKS, DOUG PLANK, WHO WORE NUMBER 46 AND HAS SINCE RETIRED. NO PLACE TO GO FOR DORSETT. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW WITH HIM. DALLAS' DEEPEST PENETRATION OF THE DAY HAS BEEN TO THE BEARS 38. >> WATCH THAT DEFENSE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT. YOU SEE HOW THEY GOT ALL THOSE GUYS LINED UP THERE. AND YOU CAN'T GET THE GUYS BEHIND BLOCKED. THEY JUST GO RIGHT DOWN THE LINE. OF COURSE, YOU GET A DORSETT. YOU GET DENT OUT THERE. HAS HIM STRUNG OUT. HE'S JUST GRABBING AT THE CARPET AS DORSETT'S ABLE TO CUT BACK. >> AND IN ADDITION TO RYAN'S CONCEPT AND WHAT HE'S DONE, THEY'VE GOT SOME PRETTY GOOD ATHLETES PLAYING UP THERE. HOGEBOOM GOING DEEP. FOR TONY HILL. JUGGLED AND BATTED AROUND BUT INCOMPLETE. LESLIE FRAZIER BACK THERE WITH HIM. >> YOU KNOW, THE COWBOYS KNEW THAT THEY HAD TO GET SOME BIG PLAYS AGAINST THIS BEAR DEFENSE. THE TWO GUYS WHO WERE GOING TO GET THE BIG PLAYS EITHER HAD TO BE TONY DORSETT OR TONY HILL. NOW, THEY'VE TRIED THE RUNNING TO DORSETT. AND WE CAN SEE THEY'RE TRYING AGAIN TO GO DEEP TO TONY HILL. THAT TIME IT WAS KNOCKED DOWN. WE SAW EARLIER THEY TRIED, IT WAS INTERCEPTED. >> FOURTH DOWN, AND ON COMES SAXON. ORTEGO BACK DEEP. SAXON. OFF THE SIDE OF HIS FOOT. HE JUST FLAT MISSED IT. THERE ARE DAYS WHEN EVERYTHING GOES WRONG. >> PAT SUMMERALL, JOHN MADDEN AT TEXAS STADIUM, WHERE THE BEARS HAVE DOMINATED DALLAS, 24-0, AND CONTINUE TO DO THAT. WALTER PAYTON AND MATT SUHEY, THE TWO RUNNERS. AND PAYTON GOES IN MOTION. FULLER SPRINTS OUT LEFT. LOOKS BACK UP THE MIDDLE. SUHEY. THE PASS IS COMPLETE. ALMOST ENOUGH FOR A FIRST DOWN. A GAIN OF 11. IT SHOULD BE. >> I THINK THAT MIKE DITKA AND EDDIE HUGHES, THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR OF THIS BEAR TEAM, SHOULD BE GIVEN A LOT OF CREDIT FOR THIS GAME PLAN. BECAUSE BASICALLY WHAT THEIR IDEA IS IS EITHER GIVE THE BALL TO PAYTON OR HAVE PAYTON GO ONE WAY AND HAVE FULLER GO THE OTHER WAY AND THROW. AND IT REALLY HAS WORKED. IT'S BEEN A GOOD PLAN, A GOOD WAY TO ATTACK THE COWBOYS. >> IT'S BEEN CHALKBOARD. FULLER IS GONNA THROW AGAIN. HE'S CHASED BY JEFF ROHRER. AND DOWN GOES STEVE FULLER. DOWN COMES THE YELLOW FLAG. IT'S GONNA BE A FACE MASK. HE'LL GET THE SACK, BUT IT'S GONNA BE A PENALTY. FULLER IS DOWN. NOW HE'S GETTING UP. McMAHON, THEIR STARTING QUARTERBACK, REGULAR QUARTERBACK, OUT WITH A BAD SHOULDER. FULLER STARTED. PLAYED THE WHOLE GAME. >> PERSONAL FOUL. A FLAGRANT FACE-MASK PENALTY. 50, DEFENSE. 15 YARDS. FIRST DOWN. >> A FLAGRANT FACE MASK. THAT'S SERIOUS. >> WELL, THE NONFLAGRANT ONES ARE A 5-YARD PENALTY. THE FLAGRANT ONES ARE 15. AND USUALLY THEY CALL IT FLAGRANT WHEN THEY GRAB IT AND THEN THEY JERK IT AND THEY JERK THEIR HEAD DOWN OR BACK. YOU SEE, IT WOULD PROBABLY BE OKAY THEN, WHEN HE FIRST DID IT. BUT THEN, AS HE WAS FALLING, HE JERKED HIM BACK AND DOWN. AND THAT'S WHERE HE GOT THE 10 MORE. >> FIRST AND 10, CHICAGO. 5:56 LEFT, FIRST QUARTER. SUHEY TO THE LEFT SIDE. STOPPED BY ROHRER AND FROM BEHIND BY RANDY WHITE. BUT A GAIN OF 6 NEVERTHELESS. >> I'LL TELL YOU, JIM COVERT HAS BEEN DOING AN EXCELLENT JOB BLOCKING TODAY. HE'S BLOCKING JIM JEFFCOAT THERE. IF YOU CAN SEE THAT LAST RUN. LET'S WATCH IT. HE'S THE LEFT TACKLE -- 74. WATCH HIM FIRE INTO JEFFCOAT. JEFFCOAT HAS BEEN PLAYING OUTSTANDING. WATCH COVERT, 74, TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM -- 5 YARDS. BOOM -- PUT HIM DOWN, ROLL HIM OVER, AND THEN GET SOME YARDS IN THERE. I'LL TELL YOU, JEFFCOAT HAS BEEN PLAYING OUTSTANDING THESE LAST TWO WEEKS. AND COVERT HAS TAKEN CARE OF HIM TODAY. >> COVERT IS AN ALL-PRO. SECOND DOWN. FAKE BY FULLER TO PAYTON. INTENDED FOR WRIGHTMAN, WHO'S HIT BY DOWNS. WRIGHTMAN LOOKED STUNNED FOR A MOMENT BUT GOT UP. THIRD DOWN. >> YOU KNOW, WE WERE TALKING ABOUT COVERT. WATCH HIM RIGHT HERE -- 74. HE'S GONNA FIRE DOWN ON RANDY WHITE. WATCH HIM, 74, COMING IN AGAINST RANDY WHITE. BOOM! OF COURSE, THERE WAS A DOUBLE-TEAM. THE CENTER WAS THERE, TOO. BUT THAT'S A BIG TACKLE EXPLODING ON A BIG GUY. A HIGH-LOW. >> UP, READY TO GO AGAIN. JUST A THIRD-YEAR PRO FROM PITTSBURGH. HE'S GONNA BE THERE A LONG TIME. FULLER CHASED BY THE COWBOYS. GETS OUT OF IT. TO WRIGHTMAN. AND A FLAG IS DOWN AGAIN. >> BOY, THESE OFFICIALS. I THINK WE'VE HAD LIKE FIVE FLAGS ON THE LAST FIVE OR SIX PLAYS, HAVEN'T WE? >> SEEMS LIKE IT. THAT'S A GAIN OF 15. EVERYTHING THEY'VE DONE HAS BEEN CALLED BACK. >> OFFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE. NUMBER 80. >> PASS-INTERFERENCE CALL AGAINST WRIGHTMAN. WE HAD A FLAGRANT FACE MASK, WHICH IS HARD TO SAY. >> WALTER PAYTON STILL HASN'T GOTTEN THAT 1,000 YARDS THAT HE WILL GET TODAY. BUT HERE'S THE THING THAT SEPARATES PAYTON FROM A LOT OF OTHER GUYS. IT'S THE THINGS THAT HE DOES WHEN HE DOESN'T GET THE BALL. NOW, THERE WE SEE HIM PICKING UP JEFF ROHRER ON A BLITZ. I TALKED TO HIM ONCE, AND HE TOLD ME HE GETS MORE THRILL OUT OF THAT -- OUT OF THAT TYPE OF BLOCK -- THAN HE DOES RUNNING. >> HE'S ONE OF THOSE GUYS WHO HAS THAT EXPLOSION, WHETHER HE'S CARRYING THE BALL OR BLOCKING. THIRD AND 14. FULLER. FIRES COMPLETE. DENNIS GENTRY GETS IT OUT OF BOUNDS. BUT THE BEARS GET A FIRST DOWN. KNOCKED OUT BY DENNIS THURMAN. >> AND THERE WAS ANOTHER BLOCK THERE BY WALTER PAYTON ON THAT ONE. IT WAS ON JIM JEFFCOAT. WATCH HIM HERE. AGAIN, AND THIS IS THE THING THAT LETS FULLER -- YOU SEE HE'S COMING FLAT. WATCH PAYTON COME IN THERE. HE GETS JEFFCOAT DOWN. AND RIGHT BEHIND HIM THERE WAS WHERE FULLER COMPLETED THE PASS. COVERT CAME IN AND SAID, "HEY, THAT'S MY GUY. I MISSED HIM. THANKS, WALTER. LET ME GIVE HIM ONE SHOVE HERE." >> FIRST DOWN, BEARS. THEY MOVE INTO DALLAS TERRITORY. THE DALLAS 42 1/2-YARD LINE. 4:35 LEFT TO PLAY IN THE FIRST HALF. HERE'S PAYTON. RANDY WHITE ON THE STOP. AND THAT SHOULD PUT HIM CLOSE TO THAT 1,000-YARD DEAL. >> I'LL TELL YOU, IT WAS RIGHT IN THERE AGAIN BEHIND JIM COVERT, GOING AGAINST JIM JEFFCOAT. WE SEE PAYTON BLOCKING, AND NOW WE SEE WHAT HE DOES WHEN HE CARRIES THE BALL. YOU SEE COVERT WORKING THERE AGAIN ON JEFFCOAT. HE JUST GETS RIGHT IN THERE ON THE LEFT END BEHIND HIS BIG TACKLE AND, OF COURSE, THAT GIVES HIM THE 1,000 YARDS. >> AN NFL RECORD. FOR THE NINTH TIME HE'S DONE IT. SECOND AND 7. PAYTON WINDS UP BEHIND SUHEY. BOTH OF THEM BEHIND FULLER. PAYTON AGAIN. HERE COMES THE REVERSE. PAYTON FAKES IT. KEEPS IT. THROWS IT. WRIGHTMAN HAS THE FIRST DOWN INSIDE THE DALLAS 10. FELLOWS BACK THERE. IT'LL BE FIRST AND GOAL, COWBOYS. TALK ABOUT DOING EVERYTHING. HE DID EVERYTHING ON THAT PLAY. >> ON THIS SERIES -- AND IF ANYONE DOESN'T THINK WALTER PAYTON IS THE GREATEST BACK THAT EVER LIVED, I THINK YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS CARRY. WE SEE HIM BLOCKING. WE SEE HIM RUNNING. AND NOW WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE? "LET'S THROW ONE." WATCH THIS LITTLE FAKE HERE. HE PUTS THE BALL OUT, AND THEN HE BRINGS IT BACK, PUTS IT ON HIS HIP, STARTS TO RUN. HAS A GUY HANGING ON HIM. LOCKHART HANGING ON HIM. AND STILL GETS THE BALL DOWNFIELD TO TIM WRIGHTMAN. >> FIRST AND GOAL, BEARS, AND HE HAS DONE, INDEED, EVERYTHING IN THIS LAST SERIES. BLOCK. RUN. THROW. FAKE. WHAT ELSE IS THERE? FULLER'S PASS INTENDED FOR McKINNON -- INCOMPLETE. >> I WAS JUST GONNA SAY, THE ONE THING THAT HE COULD DO IS HE COULD CATCH ONE NOW DOWN HERE ON THE GOAL LINE FROM THE REFRIGERATOR. NOW, THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING BECAUSE HE HASN'T DONE THAT YET. HE HASN'T CAUGHT ONE FROM THE REFRIGERATOR. THERE'S THE REFRIGERATOR. HE'S WAITING. HE'S PROBABLY TELLING COACH DITKA, "LET ME THROW ONE." HE'S SAYING, "I DON'T KNOW IF I WANT TO TRY THAT ONE WHERE THE REFRIGERATOR THROWS TO SWEETNESS. I DON'T KNOW." >> THAT'S SOME TOUGH CHEWING GUM HE'S GOT. >> IT'LL GET FASTER IF HE SCORES HERE. >> SECOND DOWN AND GOAL. PAYTON. HAMMERS TO ABOUT THE 2 BEFORE JOHN DUTTON SCATTERS SOME BODIES. >> EVEN THE FANS START TO CHEER HERE FOR THE REFRIGERATOR. REFRIGERATOR GETS IT AT HOME, AND HE GETS IT ON THE ROAD. >> SUHEY COMES OUT, ALONG WITH McKINNON AND GAULT. FREDERICK GOES IN -- AN EX-COWBOY -- AND HE WILL BE LINED UP AT ONE OF THE TIGHT END SPOTS. NO, FREDERICK IS INSIDE THIS TIME. THE REFRIGERATOR IS BACK WITH PAYTON. REFRIGERATOR IN MOTION. REFRIGERATOR BLOCKS. PAYTON TRIES TO GET IN THE END ZONE. HE DOESN'T DO IT. EUGENE LOCKHART WAS UP QUICKLY, AND NOW THE FLAGS GO DOWN AGAIN. >> THAT WAS EVERSON WALLS TAKING ON THE REFRIGERATOR. >> ILLEGAL USE OF THE HANDS. NUMBER 72. HE WAS PUSHING THE RUNNER. >> A VIOLATION ON THE REFRIGERATOR. >> REFRIGERATOR SAID, "I'M PLAYING DEFENSE. I CAN USE THOSE HANDS." BUT NOT HERE. WATCH -- HE GOES IN MOTION. LOOKS NICE. HERE COMES WALLS. HE COMES UP. WALLS GOES UNDERNEATH HIM. CLINKSCALE GOES UNDERNEATH HIM. NOW HE'S GONNA PUSH. HE'S GONNA HELP HIS GUY. HE DIDN'T PUSH HIM. HE PICKED HIM UP! >> AND TRIED TO CARRY HIM IN. >> HE WAS GONNA PICK HIM UP AND THROW HIM IN. WHAT DO YOU MEAN, "PUSH"? WHEN YOU WEIGH 310 POUNDS, YOU DON'T PUSH. "I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. I WAS JUST PICKING UP MY GUY." >> FOR ONCE, THE REFRIGERATOR'S EMPTY. >> YEAH, PAYTON HADN'T HAD THAT DONE TO HIM. HE'D CARRIED IT, HE'D BLOCKED, HE'D THROWN IT. HE HADN'T HAD ANYONE THROW HIM IN THE END ZONE. >> IT'S THIRD DOWN. FULLER CHASED BY BATES. THROWS THE BALL. THE FANS, OF COURSE, WANT INTENTIONAL GROUNDING, BUT THEY'RE GONNA SAY THAT BATES HAD FULLER. >> AND SO THE REFEREE IS MARKING IT RIGHT THERE WHERE BATES HAD HIM, SO I'M SURE THAT HE CALLED HIM IN THE GRASP. AND, OF COURSE, THAT WAS FOURTH DOWN. >> AND THE FOURTH SACK. >> OF COURSE, THAT BRINGS UP FOURTH DOWN. BECAUSE THEY HAD THE PENALTY ON THAT PLAY, SO THEY PLAYED IT OVER. SO THAT WAS THIRD DOWN. >> SO BUTLER COMES IN, WITH FULLER HOLDING. BUTLER FOR THE EXTRA POINT -- FOR THE FIELD GOAL, BEG YOUR PARDON. FROM 41 YARDS OUT. HE'S HIT ALREADY FROM 44. JOHN DUTTON JUMPED INTO THE BEAR BACKFIELD. HE'S SAYING THAT HE WAS PULLED OFFSIDE. LET'S SEE. BURL TOLER COMES OVER. >> ILLEGAL PROCEDURE BY THE CENTER. ILLEGAL PROCEDURE ON THE CENTER. >> CALL AGAINST THE CENTER -- HILGENBERG. THERE ARE A LOT OF CENTERS AROUND THE NFL NAMED "HILGENBERG," AREN'T THERE? >> YEAH, IT'S A BIG FAMILY. THEY'RE THE ONLY FAMILY THAT PLAYS CATCH BACKWARDS. THEY CAN'T FACE EACH OTHER. THEY TURN AROUND AND -- WHAP! "TAKE THIS ONE. TAKE THAT ONE." SOMETIMES THOSE GUYS MOVE THE BALL JUST BEFORE THEY SNAP IT. I'LL BET THAT'S WHAT HILGENBERG DID. >> SEVEN TIMES THE BEARS HAVE BEEN PENALIZED. THEY MOVE IT BACK NOW, SO THIS WILL BE 47 YARDS. AND GOOD AGAIN. 46, OFFICIALLY. BUTLER IS 2 FOR 2, AND THE BEARS ARE UP 27-0. >> LOOK AT THIS REACTION BY KEVIN BUTLER AFTER HE'S SUCCESSFUL ON THAT FIELD GOAL. >> AND HE'S LOOKING RIGHT AT RAFAEL SEPTIEN. AND I THINK ANYONE THAT ROLLS HIS SLEEVES UP LIKE THAT, LIKE BUTLER DOES, I THINK GIVES THAT TYPE OF REACTION. HE'S TRYING TO SHOW THOSE ARMS THERE. HE PROBABLY LIFTS WEIGHTS, HANGS ON THE MACHINE A LITTLE. >> DOESN'T SHOW. AT THE GOAL LINE IS ROBERT LAVETTE. LAVETTE RUNS OUT OF A TACKLE TO ABOUT THE 26. AND AGAIN THE YELLOW FLAG APPEARS. >> IT'S GOING TO BE ONE OF THOSE AGAINST THE KICKING TEAM. NUMBER 37 THERE IS BURL TOLER. THE OFFICIAL. >> ILLEGAL BLOCK IN THE BACK, NUMBER 59, DURING THE RUNBACK. 10-YARD PENALTY. >> OLD BURL GOT HIM. BURL WAS A GREAT PLAYER AT USF. IN FACT, BURL TOLER PLAYED THERE AT USF WITH DICK STANFEL, WHO'S THE OFFENSIVE LINE COACH OF THE BEARS. THEY PLAYED ON THAT USF TEAM. OLLIE MATSON WAS ON THAT TEAM. THIS GUY GOT HURT IN THE COLLEGE ALL-STAR GAME. COULD HAVE BEEN THE BEST OF THE WHOLE GROUP. >> GINO MARCHETTI WAS ON THAT TEAM. OLLIE MATSON, AS YOU SAID. ED BROWN. >> THEY HAD A LOAD OF THOSE GUYS. >> RED STEPHENS. I PLAYED WITH BURL TOLER WITH THE CARDINALS, AFTER HE WAS HURT. AND YOU'RE RIGHT. IF HE HADN'T BEEN HURT, HE COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT. HOGEBOOM IS INCOMPLETE, FOR LEON GONZALEZ. NOT BEEN A VERY GOOD DAY FOR THE DALLAS OFFENSIVE UNIT. THEY'VE HAD THE BALL 12 TIMES. THEY'VE TURNED IT OVER FOUR. SEVEN PUNTS. AND ONE POSSESSION ENDED AT THE HALF. THEY HAVE NOT BEEN SHUT OUT SINCE, WHEN, 1970? >> YEAH, AND I THINK, AGAIN, THAT THAT'S THE DEFENSE. I THINK YOU CAN TAKE ALL THOSE STATISTICS AND EITHER GIVE THEM TO DALLAS AS A NEGATIVE THING AGAINST THEM OR GIVE ALL THOSE STATISTICS TO THE BEAR OFFENSE, SAYING THIS IS WHAT THIS GROUP HAS DONE TO THEM TODAY. >> THEIR DEFENSE HAS BEEN EXCELLENT. HOGEBOOM. SWING PASS OUT TO DORSETT, AND HE'S CUT DOWN IMMEDIATELY BY WILBER MARSHALL, THE NUMBER-ONE DRAFT CHOICE A YEAR AGO. REALLY HAS COME INTO HIS OWN THIS YEAR. >> OF COURSE, HE TOOK AL HARRIS' PLACE. REMEMBER, HARRIS HELD OUT. HE WAS THE STARTER THERE, AND THEN WILBER MARSHALL STARTED. AND HE'S BECOME A BIG-PLAY GUY FOR THIS BEAR DEFENSE. BUT TODAY, OF THE LINEBACKERS, THE BIG-PLAY GUY HAS BEEN OTIS WILSON. >> THAT'S THE END OF THE THIRD QUARTER, WITH THE SCORE 27-0, CHICAGO OVER DALLAS. WE NOW PAUSE FOR A WORD FROM YOUR LOCAL STATION. >> DALLAS HAD 9 YARDS ON OFFENSE IN THE THIRD QUARTER. THAT BRINGS UP A FOURTH-DOWN SITUATION AS THE FOURTH QUARTER GETS UNDERWAY, AND THE BEARS LEADING 27-0. >> AND I THINK IT ALL START-- YOU CAN TALK ABOUT THROWING AND CATCHING AND RUNNING AND ALL THOSE THINGS. BUT AS VINCE LOMBARDI ALWAYS FELT, IT ALL STARTS WITH BLOCKING. BLOCKING AND TACKLING. AND WHAT'S HAPPENED -- THE BEARS HAVE BEEN DOING THE TACKLING TODAY, AND THE COWBOYS HAVEN'T BEEN DOING THE BLOCKING. >> WHEN YOU GET RIGHT DOWN TO THE BOTTOM LINE, THEY JUST HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO KEEP THEM OFF THEIR QUARTERBACK. SAXON TO PUNT. OFF THE SIDE OF HIS FOOT AGAIN. ORTEGO FIELDS IT. HEADS BACK INTO DALLAS TERRITORY. BEARS WILL TAKE OVER AT THE COWBOY 45. JEFF ROHRER MADE THE STOP. PUNT OF 45, A RETURN OF 8. ATLANTA LEADS THE RAMS 23-7, FOURTH QUARTER. GREEN BAY OVER NEW ORLEANS 24-7, FOURTH QUARTER. CLEVELAND OVER BUFFALO 10-7. THAT, TOO, IN THE FOURTH QUARTER. AND THE JETS BURYING THE BUCCANEERS 48-21 NOW. NO WONDER. THEY'RE JUST IN THE THIRD QUARTER. PITTSBURGH OVER HOUSTON 23-7. PHILADELPHIA NOW LEADS ST. LOUIS 17-14. DON'T COUNT OUT THE EAGLES. AND MIAMI 34-20 OVER THE INDIANAPOLIS COLTS. CALVIN THOMAS IN FRONT OF PAYTON. PAYTON GETS THE CARRY. GETS A COUPLE OF YARDS. RANDY WHITE AGAIN MADE THE STOP. >> THERE'S CERTAIN PLAYERS, JOHN -- YOU KNOW THIS. LIKE PAYTON, LIKE RANDY WHITE -- NO MATTER WHAT THE SCORE IS, THEY PLAY AT THE SAME SPEED ALL THE TIME. >> AND A LOT OF PLAYERS -- I KNOW BILL BATES WAS SAYING THE OTHER DAY -- "WHEN I GET THROUGH, I WOULD LIKE TO BE KNOWN AS A GUY -- NOT IN RANDY WHITE'S CLASS, BUT JUST KNOWN AS A GUY WHO PLAYED AS HARD AS RANDY WHITE." JIM JEFFCOAT SAID THE SAME THING. "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE?" "I WANT TO BE KNOWN AS A GUY THAT PLAYED AS HARD AS RANDY WHITE HAS." >> FULLER GIVES AGAIN TO PAYTON. PAYTON CHASED BY DUTTON. BREAKS AWAY FROM EVERSON WALLS AND EVERYBODY ELSE WHO HAD A SHOT AT HIM, AND JEFF ROHRER FINALLY GETS HIM OUT OF BOUNDS. >> THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE RIGHT THERE BETWEEN WALTER PAYTON AND A TONY DORSETT. THEY'RE BOTH GREAT RUNNING BACKS, AND PEOPLE SAY, "WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?" THE DIFFERENCE IS, TONY DORSETT WILL TRY AND AVOID THE CONTACT, GET AWAY FROM YOU, MAKE MOVES. WALTER PAYTON WILL PUT IT TO YOU AT THE END OF THE RUN. YOU SEE HIM FINISH THE RUN? WALLS COMES TO TACKLE HIM. HE JUST TAKES HIS LEFT ARM AND SHOULDER AND JUST PUSHES HIM RIGHT ON BY. HE'LL TAKE ON THAT TACKLER, TRYING TO GET ANOTHER 3 OR 4 OR 5 YARDS. AND IN DOING THAT, HE'S NEVER REALLY BEEN HURT. THAT'S THE AMAZING THING. >> AND HE'S BEEN DOING IT FOR 11 YEARS. THAT'S ANOTHER AMAZING THING. THIRD DOWN AND 3. PAYTON BREAKS ANOTHER TACKLE. PAYTON STILL ON HIS FEET. BREAKS ALL THE TACKLES. PAYTON INSIDE THE 5 TO THE 3. IS HE SOMETHING? >> I'LL TELL YOU, HE'S SO MUCH OF SOMETHING THAT EVEN THIS DALLAS CROWD IS CHEERING HIM. THAT'S SOME BEAR FANS RIGHT THERE, BUT THIS WHOLE CROWD, AS HE WAS RUNNING, WAS SAYING, "HEY, WE'RE NOT ONLY WATCHING A BEAR TEAM THAT WE'RE TRYING TO BEAT, BUT WE'RE WATCHING ONE OF THE GREATEST PLAYERS THAT EVER PLAYED THIS GAME." WATCH HIM. HE JUST RUNS RIGHT THROUGH A TACKLE. HEGMAN HAD HIM. THEN HE MAKES A MOVE. THEN HE LIMP-LEGS. THEN OVER, UNDER. THEN HE PUTS HIS SPEED ON. DOWN THE SIDELINE. WAITS FOR A BLOCK. HERE'S DENNIS THURMAN TRYING TO TAKE HIM ON. FINALLY GETS CAUGHT FROM BEHIND THERE AS THURMAN HOLDS IT OFF. BUT THAT'S A GREAT RUN. GUYS FLYING OFF HIS BODY, GIVING MOVES. >> 19 RUSHES, 100 YARDS. THE SIXTH STRAIGHT 100-YARD-PLUS GAME. ANOTHER NFL RECORD. FIRST AND GOAL FROM THE 3. EVERYTHING'S OUT OF SYNC ON THIS ONE, AS FULLER JUST THROWS IT AWAY. PENALTY FLAGS DOWN. I'LL TELL YOU, WE ALMOST HAD A HECK OF A COLLISION THERE WITH TOM THAYER, THE RIGHT GUARD, PULLING TO THE RIGHT, AND THE MOTION MAN COMING IN MOTION, OF THE BEAR TEAM. THEY ALMOST HAD A HEAD-ON COLLISION. >> GENE BARTH'S CALL UPCOMING. I THINK. >> THAYER -- HE'S THEIR ROOKIE. ROOKIE IN THE NFL. OF COURSE, HE'S PLAYED IN THE USFL. >> ILLEGAL MOTION, 71, OFFENSE. 5-YARD PENALTY. WE'LL REPEAT FIRST DOWN. >> I'LL TELL YOU -- WATCH HERE. HERE COMES THE MOTION MAN. HERE COMES THAYER. THEY RUN INTO EACH OTHER. HIT THE BACK. THE WHOLE THING. I GUESS IF YOU SEE THAT SOMEWHERE IN HIGHLIGHTS, YOU PROBABLY SAY, "WELL, LOOKS LIKE A BROKEN PLAY TO ME." >> THEY'VE BEEN WORKING ON THAT FOR WEEKS. FULLER. FAKES. PASS IS DEFLECTED. HE WAS HIT BY HEGMAN AS HIS ARM STARTED FORWARD, SO IT'S JUST AN INCOMPLETE PASS. ALMOST A FUMBLE, BUT NOT QUITE. >> IT LOOKED LIKE HE THOUGHT THAT HE SAW SOMEONE OPEN. IT LOOKED LIKE HE HAD A PLAY, AND THEN HE BROUGHT IT DOWN AND WENT TO BRING IT UP AGAIN, AND IT WAS TOO LATE. HE'S GONNA THROW IT NOW. HE BRINGS IT BACK. AND WHEN HE BRINGS IT BACK, THERE'S HEGMAN RIGHT UNDER HIS ARMPIT. HE STUCK HIS HELMET RIGHT IN HIS ARMPIT. THAT'LL LIFT YOUR SHOULDER UP. >> SECOND AND GOAL FROM THE 8. 12:51 LEFT TO PLAY. BEARS INSIDE THE COWBOY 10. PAYTON THE LONE SET BACK. FULLER COMES OUT. CHASED BY DOWNS. SIDEARMS IT. INCOMPLETE. STEVE FULLER WAS CHASED BY WALLS AND DOWNS. >> OF COURSE, I THINK THIS IS WHAT THE BEARS WANTED TO DO. IT'S A SPRINT-OUT AGAINST THE BLITZ. THE COWBOYS ARE BLITZING INSIDE. FULLER IS SPRINTING TO THE OUTSIDE TO GET OUTSIDE THE RUSH. >> HEGMAN WHO FINALLY GOT HIM OUT OF BOUNDS. FULLER IS 9 OUT OF 24 FOR 164 YARDS. HE'S THROWN THE ONE DEFLECTED INTERCEPTION, BUT HE'S DONE A GOOD JOB. COWBOYS SHOWING BLITZ. FULLER ON A QUARTERBACK DRAW. I THINK THAT WAS DESIGNED. AND ED JONES TAKES HIM DOWN. IT'LL BE FOURTH DOWN NOW, AND ON COMES THE FIELD-GOAL UNIT. KEVIN BUTLER. >> SEE WHAT BUTLER DOES? HE BRINGS IN A TOWEL. KICKERS DO THAT. THEY ALL CARRY A TOWEL IN SO THAT THE CENTER CAN DRY OFF HIS HANDS AND THE HOLDER -- THE QUARTERBACK -- CAN DRY OFF THEIRS. AND THEY'LL JUST THROW IT ON THE SIDE. THE KICKER TAKES CARE OF THINGS LIKE THAT. WHO'S GONNA BRING THE TOWEL? WELL, THE KICKER BRINGS THE TOWEL. >> WHAT ELSE COULD THEY HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT? >> GETTING THE BALL THROUGH THE UPRIGHTS AND BRINGING THE TOWEL. >> THIS ONE'S FROM 22 YARDS AWAY. FULLER GETS THE BALL DOWN, AND BUTLER GETS THE BALL THROUGH. AND THE BEARS NOW LEAD 30-0. >> FOR THE DALLAS COWBOYS TODAY NOTHING HAS QUITE FIT RIGHT. BEARS 30, COWBOYS 0. FOURTH QUARTER. KEVIN BUTLER SET TO KICK IT OFF. BACK DEEP, ROBERT LAVETTE. THE ROOKIE FROM GEORGIA TECH. >> I WATCHED KEVIN BUTLER KICK OFF ONCE. IF HE KICKS IT IN THE END ZONE, HE JUST RUNS STRAIGHT OFF THE FIELD. DOESN'T EVEN COVER IT. >> [ LAUGHS ] DOESN'T REALLY COVER...EVER. JUST WATCHED HIM THERE. LAVETTE GETS OUT TO ABOUT THE 23. REMINDER ABOUT NEXT WEEK'S SCHEDULE HERE ON CBS. EARLY GAMES. CBS SPORTS, OF COURSE, BEGINS WITH "THE NFL TODAY." IT'LL BE A DOUBLEHEADER WEEK FOR US. ATLANTA AT CHICAGO. DETROIT-TAMPA BAY. NEW ORLEANS-MINNESOTA. AND WASHINGTON AT PITTSBURGH. EARLY GAMES. LATE GAMES -- PHILADELPHIA WILL COME HERE AGAINST DALLAS. GREEN BAY AGAINST THE RAMS. AND THE GIANTS GO TO ST. LOUIS. AND WE DON'T KNOW WHERE WE'LL BE. >> I'LL TELL YOU, THESE COWBOYS BETTER PLAY A LOT BETTER NEXT WEEK THAN THEY ARE PLAYING TODAY, OR THAT PHILADELPHIA'S GONNA BE A HANDFUL FOR THEM. >> THINK THEY MIGHT BE A HANDFUL ANYWAY. INTENDED FOR LEON GONZALEZ. INCOMPLETE. LESLIE FRAZIER ON THE COVERAGE RIGHT THERE. >> I THINK THESE BEARS ARE A TEAM THAT CAN GO ALL THE WAY. IT'S TOUGH TO GO -- I'M TALKING ABOUT ALL THE WAY UNDEFEATED. IT'S TOUGH TO GO UNDEFEATED. THE MIAMI DOLPHINS, OF COURSE, DID IT. BUT I WATCH THESE GUYS, AND THEY CAN DO IT WITHOUT THEIR QUARTERBACK. THEY CAN DO IT WITH A GUY MISSING HERE OR THERE. I THINK THEY HAVE TOO MANY GOOD THINGS TO EVER HAVE A DOWN GAME. AS YOU WERE SAYING BEFORE, THEY CAN CLINCH THEIR DIVISION -- IT LOOKS LIKE THEY WILL WITH THIS VICTORY TODAY. THEY DON'T SEEM LIKE A TEAM THAT WILL HAVE A LETDOWN, EITHER, DO THEY? DENT. ON HOGEBOOM. SIX SACKS OF THE DALLAS QUARTERBACK. >> THAT'S ONE THING ABOUT DEFENSE AND BEING STRONG DEFENSE AND PART OF YOUR GREATNESS AS A TEAM BEING DEFENSE -- DEFENSIVE GUYS USUALLY DON'T GET DOWN. THEY USUALLY DON'T LET UP. THEY DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER. THESE ARE THE GUYS THAT ALWAYS GO OUT, REACT, HIT, RUSH THE PASSER, GET KNOCKED AROUND, AND KNOCK AROUND. THEY DON'T DO A LOT OF THINKING. THEY DO A LOT OF REACTING AND INSTINCT. WHEN THOSE GUYS ARE CARRYING YOUR TEAM, AS THEY DID TODAY, THEN IT'S A LITTLE EASIER TO BE A GREAT TEAM. >> WELL, YOU AND I HAVE TALKED MANY TIMES ABOUT WHAT THE INGREDIENT IS THAT LEADS YOU TO BE THAT SUCCESSFUL AND IT USUALLY IS THE MOST CONSISTENT THING -- DEFENSE. HOGEBOOM HAS DENT LOOKING RIGHT AFTER HIM. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] HE COMPLETES IT TO GONZALEZ, BUT NOT NEARLY ENOUGH TO MOVE THE STICKS. AND, AGAIN, THE COWBOYS WILL HAVE TO PUNT. 11 MINUTES LEFT TO PLAY, AND THEY HAVE BEEN JUST OVERWHELMED BY THE CHICAGO BEARS. >> WHEN YOU LOOK AT THIS BEAR DEFENSE, IT'S ONE THAT IS GOOD AT EVERY LEVEL. THE DEFENSIVE LINEMEN ARE GOOD. THE LINEBACKERS ARE GOOD. AND THE SECONDARY IS GOOD. IT'S NOT ONE THAT HAS JUST A GOOD FRONT, BUT A LITTLE WEAK THERE OR A GOOD SECONDARY AND WEAK IN THE LINE. THEY HAVE THE WHOLE DEAL GOING. ORTEGO IS BACK DEEP... FOR THE BEARS. AND SAXON WILL PUNT. AGAIN, HE DOESN'T GET IT ALL. ORTEGO IS HAMMERED BY JESSE PENN, WHO IS ONE OF THE FEW BRIGHT SPOTS FOR THE MEN IN WHITE TODAY -- THE DALLAS COWBOYS. IT'S BEEN A LONG DAY FOR THEM. AND THE BEARS LEAD IT 30-0. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] >> THE NEW BEAR QUARTERBACK IS MIKE TOMCZAK, THE ROOKIE FREE AGENT FROM OHIO STATE. THE BEARS HAVE HIGH, HIGH HOPES FOR HIM. THEY THINK HE COULD BE A PLAYER. HE HAS PAYTON BEHIND HIM. SUPERMAN IN MOTION. THROWS IT BACK TO PAYTON. PAYTON IS TAKEN DOWN BY MICHAEL DOWNS. YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT THOSE DALLAS SAFETYMEN. THEY'RE UP IN YOUR FACE IN A HURRY. CHECKING SOME OF THE OTHER SCORES. ATLANTA STILL LEADS THE RAMS 23-14, FOURTH QUARTER. GREEN BAY OVER NEW ORLEANS 31-7. TOUGH TIMES FOR BUM PHILLIPS. BOBBY HEBERT WAS SUPPOSED TO START THAT GAME AT QUARTERBACK. CLEVELAND 17-7 OVER BUFFALO. AND PHILADELPHIA -- 24-14. BOY, THAT'S ONE OF THE REAL SURPRISES OF THIS YEAR -- THE EAGLES. >> THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS WE WERE TALKING ABOUT. IF YOU HAVE GOOD DEFENSE, YOU'RE NEVER GOING TO BE A BAD TEAM. >> SECOND DOWN HERE. TOMCZAK GIVES TO PAYTON ON THE DRAW PLAY. PAYTON HAMMERS TO MIDFIELD. STOPPED BY JOHN DUTTON. >> ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I'M SURE A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE THINKING ABOUT IS WHEN YOU GET INTO THE FOURTH QUARTER AND YOU HAVE A 30-POINT LEAD, WHY IS WALTER PAYTON IN THERE? WELL, I THINK THE ANSWER IS BECAUSE HE'S A FOOTBALL PLAYER AND THERE'S A FOOTBALL GAME GOING ON AND YOU WANT TO PLAY. I THINK WHEN YOU START TAKING IT EASY ON GUYS OR GUYS START THINKING, "OH, WE'RE AHEAD. I DON'T HAVE TO PLAY NOW. I DON'T WANT TO PLAY NOW," YOU CAN'T PUT THEM IN A GLASS CASE. THEY GOT TO GET OUT THERE, AND REAL PLAYERS WANT TO PLAY. THEY DON'T WANT TO GET OFF. "IT'S A GAME. I'LL PLAY. WHEN THE GUN GOES OFF, I'LL GO IN AND TAKE A SHOWER, BUT I'M PLAYING." >> THIRD AND 7. AND I'M SURE THAT'S WHAT WALTER PAYTON WANTS. GENTRY WAS THE MAN IN MOTION. THEY GIVE TO PAYTON. A FAKED STATUE OF LIBERTY. PAYTON HAS PLENTY OF ROOM. PAYTON HAMMERING DOWN THE SIDELINE. PAYTON TO THE 20. INSIDE THE 20. VICTOR SCOTT FINALLY GOT HIM OUT OF BOUNDS. I'VE RUN OUT OF TRIBUTES. >> WALTER PAYTON HAS FUN. IT'S A GAME. WE TALK ABOUT A GAME AND IT SHOULD BE FUN. THIS GUY'S HAVING FUN. OUT THERE PLAYING, RUN, GET SOME PLAY. HE ENJOYS IT. HE'S COMING OFF NOW. BUT GUYS LIKE TO PLAY. HE LIKES TO PLAY. I ALWAYS WORRY ABOUT THAT OTHER KIND -- "GET THEM OUT. DON'T GET HIM HURT." JIMINY CHRISTMAS. IT'S NOT THAT KIND OF GAME. >> NOT LIKE HE'S GETTING PER DIEM. THOMAS HAMMERS STRAIGHT AHEAD. AND KEEPS ON HIS FEET. AND INTO THE END ZONE IS CALVIN THOMAS. FROM 16 YARDS AWAY. THE BEARS MOVE FURTHER AHEAD. I DON'T -- I CAN'T REMEMBER, JOHN, SINCE WE'VE BEEN TOGETHER, A MORE IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE ALL AROUND. >> I CAN'T EITHER. THIS IS COMPLETE DOMINANCE. THESE GUYS CAME ON THE FIELD TODAY. THE DEFENSE STARTED IT. THE DEFENSE OF THE BEARS STARTED IT. THE OFFENSE KEPT IT GOING ONCE THEY GOT IT GOING. AND THERE WAS NOTHING THAT TOM LANDRY OR THE COWBOYS COULD DO ABOUT IT. THEY'VE JUST BEEN WHIPPED EVERY WAY THERE IS TO BE WHIPPED. >> NO OTHER WAY TO SAY IT. KEVIN BUTLER FOR THE EXTRA POINT. WITH FULLER HOLDING. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] BUTLER IS GOOD. THERE'S STILL 7 MINUTES, 47 SECONDS LEFT TO PLAY. THE LAST TIME DALLAS WAS SHUT OUT, IT WAS AGAINST ST. LOUIS AND THAT WAS 38-0. NOW IT'S 37-0. >> THESE OTHER BACKS DON'T GET THAT MUCH OF A CHANCE TO PLAY WITH PAYTON AND SUHEY. WHEN THEY DO, THEY'RE DETERMINED. >> PAT SUMMERALL, JOHN MADDEN. AT TEXAS STADIUM, WHERE THE CHICAGO BEARS HAVE JUST OVERWHELMED THE COWBOYS AND PUT ON ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE DISPLAYS THAT WE'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME. 37-0, THE SCORE. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] LAVETTE WATCHES IT GO OUT OF BOUNDS. >> WE TALKED ABOUT THE DOMINANCE AND THE WAY THEY'RE DOING, BUT LET'S WATCH JAY HILGENBERG. HE'S THE CENTER. DOESN'T ALWAYS GET A LOT OF CREDIT. HE HAS TO BLOCK BACK. WATCH HIM BLOCK BACK ON RANDY WHITE, AND MARK BORTZ PULLS THROUGH HERE TO LEAD THOMAS. WATCH THE JOB THE CENTER DOES ON RANDY WHITE. THAT'S A TOUGH BLOCK -- BLOCKING BACK. LOOK AT HIM. JUST BOOM! JUST TURN HIM. HERE COMES THE BIG GUARD. BOOM! HERE COMES THOMAS. HE FEELS THOSE BLOCKS. HE JUST KEEPS THOSE LEGS GOING. AND THEN HE GETS INTO THE END ZONE. >> NEW BACKS FOR DALLAS. ROBERT LAVETTE AND TODD FOWLER. LAVETTE TRYING TO GET TO THE OUTSIDE. THERE'S NOTHING THERE AS OTIS WILSON BRINGS HIM DOWN. BOY, HE'S HAD A BIG DAY. LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED TO TONY DORSETT. REMEMBER, HE GOT 22 YARDS ON THE FIRST CARRY OF THE GAME. 12 TIMES, 44 YARDS. PAYTON, 22 FOR 132. >> THE THING IS TONY DORSETT WAS PLAYING AGAINST A DIFFERENT DEFENSE THAN WALTER PAYTON WAS. >> A VERY GOOD POINT. HOGEBOOM. TRYING TO THROW THE SWING PASS. GETS IT OUT TO TODD FOWLER. FOWLER GETS TO ABOUT THE 25 BEFORE SHAUN GAYLE BRINGS HIM DOWN. THE FIRST FINAL OF THE DAY, CLEVELAND BEATS BUFFALO 17-7. THEY STAY IN CONTENTION IN THE AFC CENTRAL. WHO KNOWS WHO'S GOING TO WIN THAT? >> EVERYONE STAYS IN CONTENTION THERE. >> ALL YEAR LONG. >> [ CHUCKLES ] >> THIRD DOWN AND ABOUT 5 THE COWBOYS NEED FOR FIRST DOWN. THE BEARS LEAD THEM 37-0. 6:25 REMAINING. COWBOYS AT THEIR OWN 25. GONZALEZ AND POWE SPLIT WIDE TO THE LEFT. TONY HILL IS WIDE TO THE RIGHT. HOGEBOOM GIVES TO LAVETTE. AND LAVETTE GETS CLOSE TO A FIRST DOWN. SINGLETARY TOOK HIM DOWN ALONG WITH CLIFF THRIFT. McMAHON, OVER ON THE BENCH, HAS A BAD SHOULDER. CAN'T FOLLOW THROUGH WHEN HE TRIES TO THROW. AGAIN, AS JOHN MADDEN WAS SAYING BEFORE, THEY'VE DIAGNOSED IT AS TENDINITIS AND HE JUST CAN'T GET THE ARM THROUGH. >> I WAS TALKING TO HIS DOCTOR LAST NIGHT, AND HE SAID THAT HE GAVE HIM A CORTISONE SHOT AND SOMETIMES IT TAKES AWHILE FOR THAT TO WORK AND HE HOPED THAT NEXT WEEK IT FEELS PRETTY GOOD, LIKE TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY. >> BY THE WAY, THE LATEST INFORMATION WE HAVE ON DANNY WHITE IS THAT THEY DID TAKE THE X-RAYS. THEY WERE NEGATIVE. AND HE HAS A STRAINED NECK. IT'S NOT A JAMMED -- JAMMED NECK MIGHT BE MORE APPROPRIATE. IT'S GOING TO BE SORE. IT'S GOT TO BE TENDER, BUT IT'S NOT AS SERIOUS AS IT LOOKED LIKE IT COULD HAVE BEEN. WHAT DO YOU DO ON THAT? >> YOU SAY, "PUT OUT THE FIRE AND CALL IN THE DOGS. THE HUNT'S OVER, AND WE BETTER GET READY FOR THE EAGLES." >> HOGEBOOM'S PASS IS PICKED OFF BY KEN TAYLOR. INTENDED FOR LEON GONZALEZ AND ANOTHER TURNOVER FOR THE COWBOYS. NUMBER 31 IS TAYLOR. >> KEN TAYLOR'S A ROOKIE. USUALLY, A ROOKIE, WHEN THEY GET THAT INTERCEPTION, THEY'RE GOING TO KEEP THE BALL. KEN TAYLOR GOT THAT EAGLE CLAW WITH THE LEFT HAND PUT ON THAT BALL. AND THERE'S NO WAY WHEN YOU GET THAT FIRST INTERCEPTION AND YOU'RE A ROOKIE AND YOU'RE PLAYING AND YOU'RE PLAYING THE COWBOYS AND YOUR TEAM HASN'T BEATEN THE COWBOYS IN SO LONG NO ONE CAN REMEMBER AND YOU GET AN INTERCEPTION, YOU'RE GOING TO TAKE IT HOME. >> IT'S BEEN SINCE 1971. ROOKIE FROM OREGON STATE IS KEN TAYLOR. BEARS ARE BACK IN BUSINESS AGAIN AFTER THE 18-YARD RETURN OF THE INTERCEPTION. GENTRY AND CALVIN THOMAS ARE THE TWO RUNNERS. THIS IS DENNIS GENTRY. HE IS CUT DOWN BY STEVE DeOSSIE AND MICHAEL DOWNS. >> I THINK ON THIS FIELD RIGHT NOW, PROBABLY THE HAPPIEST GUYS HAVE TO BE WALTER PAYTON. THE OLDER GUYS, GARY FENCIK, THEY'VE NEVER BEATEN DALLAS IN THEIR CAREER. THEY SAY, "FINALLY, WE GOT THAT ONE." MIKE DITKA, OF COURSE, WHO COACHED HERE FOR THE COWBOYS, IT HAS TO BE NICE. I THINK THAT GUY THERE, PROBABLY IT. I MEAN, HE STRUGGLED FOR SO LONG IN CHICAGO. GAVE EVERYTHING HE HAD, AND THEY REALLY DIDN'T WIN ANYTHING. >> FOR YEARS, IT WAS ONLY PAYTON. HE CARRIED THE WHOLE LOAD. NOW THEY'RE MORE DIVERSIFIED. HERE'S CALVIN THOMAS. DOWN TO ABOUT THE 20 BEFORE ED JONES COMES DOWN FROM THE OUTSIDE WITH HELP FROM JOHN DUTTON. 4 MINUTES REMAINING. 37-0. BEARS OVER DALLAS. I THOUGHT, REALLY, GOING IN THAT -- I KNEW THE BEARS WERE A GOOD TEAM. BUT I DIDN'T THINK WE'D SEE THIS KIND OF DOMINATION. >> WELL, I DIDN'T EITHER. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU GET McMAHON OUT. BUT THIS DEFENSE IS SO GOOD. I DON'T KNOW THAT I'VE SEEN A DEFENSE THIS GOOD SINCE THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS WHEN THEY WERE WINNING THOSE SUPER BOWLS. THEY WERE PROBABLY THE BEST DEFENSE THAT I HAD EVER SEEN. I THINK THAT THIS BEAR DEFENSE RANKS RIGHT UP IN THAT AREA. THAT WAS GENTRY THE BALLCARRIER. JESSE PENN MADE THE STOP. 3:10 LEFT TO PLAY, AND THE STADIUM IS FULL OF BLUE NOW. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE GONE. ANOTHER FINAL SCORE. THIS ONE'S 37-0. IT MAY NOT BE THE FINAL, BUT IT'S GOING TO BE CLOSE. PITTSBURGH 30, HOUSTON 7. FINAL. THEY KEEP THEIR HOPES ALIVE IN THE AFC CENTRAL. GENTRY LETS FLY. TOUCHDOWN, BEARS. 44-0 IF BUTLER CAN MAKE THE EXTRA POINT. >> MIKE DITKA'S SHAKING HIS HEAD. HE SAYS, "WHATEVER WE DO WORKS TODAY." I'M SURE HIS THOUGHT RIGHT THEN, AS WE JUST SAW THAT PICTURE, WAS "I DON'T WANT TO PILE UP THE SCORE ON THIS GUY. I'M NOT DOING ANYTHING. WE'RE JUST RUNNING SOME PLAYS AND IT'S HAPPENING." TOM LANDRY HAS BEEN THERE SO LONG. HE KNOWS THAT, TOO. THE LAST THING THAT MIKE DITKA WANTS IS TO HAVE ANYONE SAY THAT HE RAN UP THE SCORE OR EMBARRASSED TOM LANDRY. >> YOU CAN'T SAY THAT. THERE'S NO WAY ANYONE CAN SAY THAT. >> THAT'S WHAT HE'S THINKING. BUT YOU LOOK AT THE SCORE AND SAY, "44-0!" >> DID YOU WATCH "THE NFL TODAY" TODAY? >> NO. >> I WAS JUST WONDERING WHAT JIMMY THE GREEK PICKED. I BET HE BEAT THE SPREAD. >> WHATEVER, THESE ARE A LOT OF POINTS. WHATEVER THEY DO, ONCE YOU GET A DEFENSE BEATEN DOWN AS THESE GUYS HAVE DONE -- I MEAN, THIS OFFENSIVE LINE HAS WON THE BATTLE IN THERE. NOW YOU TAKE ANY BACK AND YOU STICK THEM IN THERE, AND WHEN YOU GET DOWN TO THIS THING, HE CAN JUST GET THROUGH THERE AS GENTRY JUST DID. >> LOOK AT THE BEAR FANS ON HAND. YOU COME IN HERE AND YOU PUT DENNIS GENTRY AND CALVIN THOMAS IN, YOU CAN'T ASK THEM NOT TO DO THEIR BEST, CAN YOU? YOU CAN'T SAY, "DON'T PLAY HARD." >> NO. AND THE OFFENSIVE LINE THAT HAD TO GET IN THERE AND ESTABLISH THAT DOMINANCE, NOW THEY GET THE LUXURY OF WHAT THEY ESTABLISHED. THEY'RE HAVING FUN NOW. >> 44-0. THE DEFICIT WOULD BE THE WORST DEFEAT IN DALLAS HISTORY. THAT GOES BACK TO 1960. >> AND WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD BE ADMINISTERED BY AN EX-COACH? >> TOM LANDRY'S RECORD AGAINST HIS FORMER ASSISTANTS WAS 6-1-1 GOING IN. THE ONLY PERSON TO BEAT HIM WAS DICK NOLAN WHO IS NOW BACK ON THE STAFF AS AN ASSISTANT. >> BUT ON THIS SIDE, ON THE BEARS' SIDE, EDDIE HUGHES IS THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, ALSO COACHED WITH TOM LANDRY AND HE'S DICK NOLAN'S BROTHER-IN-LAW. >> HE ALSO PLAYED WITH TOM LANDRY WITH THE GIANTS. >> I'LL TELL YOU -- I THINK WITH THE BACKUP QUARTERBACK IN THERE AND THE OFFENSE, I THINK HE'S DONE A HECK OF A JOB WITH THIS OFFENSIVE PLAN. >> BUTLER'S KICKOFF IS FIELDED BY TODD FOWLER. HAMMERS UP THE FAR SIDELINE TO ABOUT THE 26. TOTAL OFFENSE TODAY -- 370 FOR THE BEARS, 156 FOR THE COWBOYS. NEXT WEEK, DON'T FORGET, ONE MORE TIME. THE EARLY GAMES, AS YOU HAVE AN NFL DOUBLEHEADER HERE ON CBS. IT BEGINS WITH "THE NFL TODAY." THE FALCONS GO TO SOLDIER FIELD IN CHICAGO. DETROIT/TAMPA BAY, NEW ORLEANS/MINNESOTA, AND WASHINGTON GOES TO PITTSBURGH. THOSE ARE THE EARLY ONES. THE LATE GAMES -- PHILADELPHIA AT DALLAS HERE AT TEXAS STADIUM. GREEN BAY AND THE RAMS. AND THE GIANTS VISIT ST. LOUIS, ANOTHER TEAM THAT'S BEEN A SURPRISE BUT IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. HOGEBOOM GETS IT OUT. INTENDED FOR POWE. BEHIND HIM. INCOMPLETE. REGGIE PHILLIPS THE DEFENDER. THE GIANTS, OF COURSE, COULD TAKE OVER SOLE POSSESSION OF FIRST PLACE IF THEY BEAT WASHINGTON TOMORROW NIGHT. IF THEY DON'T, THE WHOLE NFC EAST IS A COMPLICATED PICTURE. >> THERE'S THE REFRIGERATOR. HE'S DOING TALKING NOW. HE'S OVER THERE SAYING, "I WAS IN THERE AND I GOT THIS BLOCK AND I TRIED TO PICK UP WALTER AND JUST THROW HIM IN. I SAID, 'I CAN'T DO IT. I DON'T KNOW.'" >> THE REFRIGERATOR'S ARM LOOKS LIKE A MAJOR APPLIANCE. HOGEBOOM SCRAMBLES OUT OF THE POCKET. IT'LL BE A SHORT FLIGHT BACK TO CHICAGO. >> THE REFRIGERATOR, AS YOU LOOK AT HIM THERE, WHEN HE FIRST WAS DRAFTED, HE WEIGHED 318 POUNDS. THEN THEY SAID, "THAT'S NOT BAD." SO THEN THEY BROUGHT HIM IN A COUPLE WEEKS LATER AND WEIGHED HIM. THEY PUT HIM ON A WEIGHT PROGRAM. COME IN. HE WEIGHED 327. PUT HIM ON A REAL DIET. CAME BACK THE THIRD TIME AT 336. THIS GUY'S GOING UP AND UP! >> THAT'S A HECK OF A DIET. SO IS 44-0. >> DON'T FORGET TONIGHT ON CBS, "60 MINUTES," OF COURSE, AND THEN A SPECIAL PRESENTATION -- "KANE & ABEL" -- AFTER "60 MINUTES." WE'VE BEEN GIVEN A SPECIAL PRESENTATION THIS AFTERNOON BY THE CHICAGO BEARS. THEY ARE TOUGH. ABOUT ALL THAT'S LEFT NOW IN TEXAS STADIUM ARE BEAR FANS. THEY'RE STARTING TO MAKE A LOT OF RACKET. CALVIN THOMAS THE BALLCARRIER. DON SMEREK BROUGHT HIM DOWN. >> AS I WATCH MIKE TOMCZAK OUT THERE QUARTERBACKING, PAT, I WONDER WHEN MIKE DITKA SAID LAST NIGHT, "DON'T BE SURPRISED IF YOU SEE TOMCZAK IN THERE. HE MAY PLAY. HE MAY BE THE GUY," I WONDER IF HE THOUGHT IN THIS SITUATION. >> I DON'T THINK SO. >> THAT FULLER MAY BE IN TROUBLE OR AN INJURY AND HE'LL HAVE TO COME IN. I DON'T THINK HE THOUGHT, "YOU'LL SEE HIM IN THERE WHEN WE'RE AHEAD 44-0." >> DO YOU THINK HE THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO BE AHEAD 44-0? >> NO. NO. >> 15 SECONDS REMAIN. TOMCZAK ON THIRD DOWN. SMEREK TACKLES THOMAS SANDERS. THAT SHOULD BE IT. AS THE CLOCK HAS FINISHED. THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OF "THE NFL ON CBS" IS TERRY O'NEIL. THE SENIOR PRODUCER -- CHARLES MILTON III. THIS GAME PRODUCED BY BOB STENNER. ERNIE STAUTNER AND MIKE DITKA EMBRACE. BOB FISHMAN WAS OUR DIRECTOR TODAY. GOOD TO WORK WITH HIM. ASSOCIATE PRODUCER -- JOAN VITRANO. THE BEARS, A VERY, VERY HAPPY GROUP AS THEY HEAD FOR THE LOCKER ROOM, WINNING 44-0. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT? THAT'S THE FINAL SCORE. BEARS DID IT WITH DEFENSE, BUT THEY ALSO PERFORMED WELL WHEN THEY HAD THE BALL. CAPTIONS PAID FOR BY
NFL FILMS.
"Looks like he's got a slight concussion"
Danny White back in playing later in the game
times sure have changed
Great game! I love Madden talking about the Dallas 4-0 Defense scheme. It is amazing this game was 0-0 with only a couple minutes left in the 1st quarter.
I think I can say this is the worst ass kicking in NFL history without being a meatball Bears fan. This quite literally looks like Madden on rookie mode. Just pure annihilation.
Man, you would think they would have a better quality version of this. Videotape does not age well. I wonder if its restorable.
Edit: I just saw a local station identification stamp. I guess the NFL didn't archive back then.
Great choice, thanks for giving me something to watch this weekend!

I remember sitting in my favorite bar in New Orleans (where I was living at the time) and watching this game on the TV (remember when bars had only one TV?) As the shellacking picked up steam, I remember thinking, "Man, nobody if gonna beat the Bears this season."
Annnnd two weeks later, I was proven wrong ... But hey, I got to be in the city where the Bears won their one and only Super Bowl. So I've got that going for me.
