if you know video games you'll understand the concept of video game genres first person shooter survival horror pigeon romance simulator more of a sub genre i guess there are however some genres and sub-genres that used to ride high in the video game charts producing classic games that we have fond memories of but that seem to have all but died out in recent years some are killed by changes in trends others by advances in technology others just inexplicably faded away and yet somehow there are multiple separate fishing simulators releasing on xbox this year bassmaster 2022 coming soon and you can't even romance them can you no no that would be that would be wrong uh presenting then seven dead genres that we think deserve a comeback if we're gonna be out here allowing multiple different fishing simulators to be a thing [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] for a brief period between 2005 when the first guitar hero was released and the mid-2010s when rockman 4 and guitar hero live let you jam out on a full plastic band set up in your living room rhythm action games were one of the biggest video game genres around with rock band alone accounting for over one billion dollars in sales come on who brings a new suck sign to a concert james franco fans apparently then just as suddenly as the genre had arrived it died out consigning all those plastic guitars keyboards and drum kits to the scrap heap of history or more accurately to the scrap heap of my attic [Music] but it was those instruments that in part led to the genre's downfall once people bought the instruments which were good worked and did the job they were created for there was little reason to upgrade or buy a new version of the game an attempt to add new peripherals like rock band 3's keyboard or dj hero's dj decks were unnecessary and too expensive for all but the most hardcore rhythm action fan we decided we wanted to give the guitar hero fans the guys that have all those guitars something to do so we've got this co-op mode where your buddy's just jamming out on the guitar and you're actually mixing his music in whilst you're mixing in another track as well the other problem was over saturation activision released five different versions of guitar hero in 2009 alone launched band hero which was basically the same thing with a different name and there were many many versions of rock band including beatles rock band green day rock band and even lego rock bands [Music] it was all a bit much basically and as a result the peripheral based rhythm action game is essentially no more which is a tragedy because these are some of the most fun most social experiences it's possible to have with your games console the sort of thing you can genuinely set up at a party and that people will play and enjoy themselves regardless of their level of experience with games you know rock band's all about the fantasy of being a rock star and being in a band and getting to feel like you're playing music and being expressive and for the solo gamer playing guitar hero or rock band is the closest you can get to the feeling of actually playing a musical instrument without having to have any kind of musical skill plus being able to download new tracks meant you never ran out of songs to play or memes to run into the ground so yes bring back peripheral based rhythm action games if only so i can free up some room in my attic seriously it's like a post-apocalyptic guitar center where everyone got raptured up there did you miss me hey what do you mean who am i it's me where you they say the average human will spend 229 961 hours or approximately a third of their time on this planet sleeping by our calculations we spend about the same amount of time again being taught how to crouch in the opening levels of first-person shooters b is it you know what i think i could have worked that out myself compare that to the now dormant genre of the mini-game compilation which launched you into a confused panic every 30 seconds or so as you attempted to quickly learn the rules and unique controls of a brand new game but what's the button for crouch this genre appeals to us in particular because when it comes to multiplayer there's always going to be some eight-year-old who is better at fortnite than us when it comes to multiplayer in bishibashi special or warioware though it's a level playing field with every single new minigame we can be just as good as that eight-year-old well apart from in the nose-picking game and eight-year-old is definitely going to be better at that one you could argue that the modern mario party game offers a similar thing but with its game board it lacks the purity of a proper random mini game compilation particularly given that the game is decided by a bunch of arbitrary stars dished out at the very end i swear toad i will end you there is a glimmer of hope in that there's a new warioware on the way and i'm going to need every single one of you to buy it that's because for true pure and fair multiplayer competition we need a resurgence of these frantically entertaining game compilations that give you only a few seconds to work out how to use the controls to do something completely wild that you've never done in a video game before crouch oh for pity's sake sorry for some people simply driving a car around a racing circuit neatly clipping every apex with expert precision isn't enough awesome just amazing well done hard to believe i know for those people there used to be an alternative gloriously violent car combat games these abandoned the concept of a racetrack almost entirely and the aim was to turn your opponents into a smoking heap of scrap whether by smashing into them or strafing them with weaponry tired of people asking for a free extra flake i guess twisted metal on ps1 arguably kick-started the genre combining a bizarre selection of vehicles with a variety of weaponry and special abilities in what is both a video game and set as it was in los angeles probably a satirical take on la traffic looks like the 405 at rush hour to me elsewhere carmageddon on pc had fewer weapons and was more about flattening unfortunate pedestrians and slamming into your opponents so hard that you very nearly cubed their car like a scrapyard crusher simple but effective for some reason enthusiasm for this genre seemed to all but disappear though with the final twisted metal game appearing to almost zero fanfare on ps3 in 2012. there was a carmageddon game called carmageddon reincarnation released in 2015 but it needed to be kickstarted just to get it off the ground finally there was destruction all stars on ps5 this year but playstation had so little faith in the genre they gave it away for free at the last minute also you can get out of the car so it's cheating that was a night to remember and one for the wolf pack meanwhile racing simulators that replicate the exact specifications of individual tyre rubber compounds have never been more popular so you're gonna have to make your own fun that looked bad are you all right it's just not the same i don't want to die my god for a while it seemed like a light gun peripheral was just a thing that every console needed to have from the nes zapper that let you play such classics as wild gunman and duck hunt to the sega menacer and its toe jaminol spin-off to the playstation console's gun con controllers which gave us some of the best light gun shooters ever including the classic point blank on rails like gun shooters were one of the big game genres with even big franchises like resident evil having their own spin-off shooting games then around the time of the ps3 light gun games just stopped being a thing the advent of motion controllers like nintendo's wii or the ps move led to some shooting games using motion controls to try and capture the magic of the old light gun games but to all intents and purposes light gun games were done on home consoles relegated forever to the arcades where we still see the occasional house of the dead or time crisis pop up from time to time the fact remains though that those games are fun as hell who doesn't enjoy blasting their way through a zombie infested laboratory in house of the dead or bulls eyeing targets in point blank and the feeling of accomplishment you get from actually being a good shot so come on developers don't make me go to an actual arcade to play light gun games the people who hang out there are weird and you know i'll just end up on dance dance revolution and nobody needs to see that [Music] ever since call of duty 4 modern warfare first person shooters have been stuck in an endless battle to outgritty each other which is how you end up playing a video game where a vacationing family gets blown up by chemical weapons you know fun it wasn't always the case though back in the late 90s we had arena shooters including unreal tournament which were far less interested in painstakingly recreating every rivet on an officially licensed military assault rifle and far more interested in concocting gloriously silly guns that fired things like razor sharp frisbees i was only trying to give him a haircut the other big hitter at the time was quake 3 arena which again didn't aspire to depict the grim realities of infantry warfare at least going by the character that is a giant eyeball with a rocket launcher strapped to it great peripheral vision but terrible depth perception the thing we miss most about these less serious more colourful multiplayer shooters is their extremely casual relationship with gravity rather than sprinting around and performing the odd knee slide if you were feeling fancy you tended to get around these arena shooters by bunny hopping around like the floor is mixomatosis the worst part is in 2014 epic games announced that it was going to reboot unreal tournament as an early access title for a new generation to experience the joy of the arena shooter then their other game some little side project called fortnite became bigger than a beatles and rolling stone supergroup and epic promptly dropped everything to concentrate on exactly what sort of skeleton a banana might have important work i think we can all agree quarterback shane spain is a gladiator in the windy city 18 years in the league and still battling spain may not scramble like he used to but there's no one stronger in the pocket just make sure you get to him before he makes the throw otherwise he'll hack your heart out sports games these days appear to be less interested in entertaining gameplay and more interested in accurately replicating every single bead of sweat on kilian and bappe's forehead that might well be realistic fifa 21 but i'd never be able to get near enough to check without being escorted away by pitch side security in the 90s fun was the priority which is how we ended up with the sub-genre of hilariously over-the-top violent sports games like mutant league football which was 50 american football game and 50 horror movie punch-up skeletons can't even sweat so that's that problem taken care of if you've ever been on the losing side in a sports game gotten frustrated and resorted to professional fouls and unnecessary roughness then this was the genre for you not least because if the ref attempted to chastise you for violence you could often just assault him too bit of a problem in that he was probably the only person on the field who understood the rules of american football there are a whole host of these over the top games including titles with endorsements from athletes and coaches like bill lambie's combat basketball and jerry glanville's pigskin football more extreme takes on organised sports like red card soccer or blitz the league or gladiatorial dystopian future blood sports like speed ball 2 and brutal sports football and if you're sitting here in the 2020s dismissing all this retro violence as pointless and gratuitous may we remind you that there was often still some skill involved let's just say the fact that a human head is roughly the same size and shape as a ball was not lost on hyperblade which if you were good enough actually allowed you to play and score with a player's severed melon [Music] brings a whole new meaning to get your head in the game man he is really flipped out i don't think you should be hanging around that weird eddie definitely you're making a mess that tastes like blood yeah right the 1990s was the golden age of fmv or full motion video games where you could film a bunch of theater school dropouts in front of a blue screen stick a sudoku puzzle in there every 20 minutes and call it a video game you just can't make it add up while a lot of these games weren't exactly what you'd call good they were definitely what you'd call weird and fmv games took in every kind of game imaginable from the aforementioned light gun shooters to fighting games to point and click adventures son after nailing an alien he can never go back to quail to of course hulk hogan and his magic boat this isn't a video game zach around here game over has a whole other meme all the main kinds of game obviously with advances in graphics full motion video became less appealing as a medium and barring a few high-profile examples such as erica and her story it has all but disappeared as a genre today which is a huge shame as fmv games are endlessly fascinating to me is there anything i can do to help i think part of this is due to the fact that a lot of the people making fmv games weren't actually game developers there were filmmakers who were experimenting with video games as a medium which meant that we got some truly weird and innovative takes on the traditional formula from people who didn't even know the rules they were breaking you and me are friends right you gotta help me the downside is that this all took place in the 90s when everything looked terrible had to be compressed down so that it fit on a cd and was forced to include comedy stereotype characters for some reason all of which mean they've aged horribly i got it all on film the human highlight reel rastafari that's why fmv should come back combining the world building and storytelling of today's video games with modern technology to create unique experiences we haven't seen anywhere else which is exactly what we've seen from erica and her story so more people doing that please imagine what they could do now with hulk hogan's magic boat on the ps5 the possibilities are endless time's running out clear your head and get moving thank you so much for watching this video on dead genres that we feel deserve a comeback but did we miss any that you think deserve a comeback
