Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop RPG played with friends exactly the kind of thing we invented video games to get away from and yet even in the world of interactive Digital entertainment which can be enjoyed entirely on your lonesome D and D casts a long Shadow not least in these following games into which developers snuck tabletop sessions of Dungeons and Dragons or at least something that looks very much like but is legally distinct from Dungeons and Dragons well for [Music] initiative what's initiative you don't want to give D and D publisher Wizards of the Coast a reason to sue trust me sorry um they just called turns out Mike channel was actually a monster in Third Edition oh boy I'm going away for a long time enough time for you to enjoy these seven d andd parodies in Beloved the much anticipated prequel to The Beloved paranormal teen drama with before the storm developed by franchise newcomers deck n games and boasting none of the time rewinding powers that made life is strange so remarkable fans were eager to see how this prequel could possibly measure up for deck N9 the strategy was clear make an enormous amount of the game's opening chapter a fictional ttrpg played on a school bench disenfranchised teen Rebel protagonist Khloe price can encounter this game which is never named but is clearly some variant of Dungeons and Dragons outside Blackwell Academy what the hell game on nerds here dungeon master Steph is waiting to welcome Chloe into her collaborative storytelling Adventure if you consider it welcome in for all players present to piss themselves laughing at Khloe's lack of Sword vocabulary I do a Pummel strike I strike his pommel hard um what did I say a pommel is the end of a sword handle pommel strike is where you hit the guy with it you dogs this is Chloe price at your table let her kill your characters it would be an honor in a surprisingly involved diversion from The Game's actual story Khloe takes control of an elf Barbarian and can pick her own path through a series of Steph scenarios that involve Charisma checks and tricky combat encounters okay let's end this fatal cleave you swing your great Axe downward with both hands the orc blinks then splits open like a hot dog bun yeah I'm awesome at this game all of this tabletop role playing action serves to teach Chloe the tabletop fundamentals of teamwork and problem solving I want to punch that stupid man cow in the dick like right in the dick right in the dick as I say she's got the fundamentals down got it I think we all like to imagine that the skills we've acquired from our nerdy Hobbies will one day allow us to thrive in the zombie apocalypse and not get instantly overwhelmed on day one by Undead who stop eating our skin only long enough to throw our backpacks on the roof The Last of Us Part two offers players a glimpse into how ttrpg nerds might actually fair when confronted by zombies and the subsequent Waring human factions that inevitably follow a zombie apocalypse this Glimpse comes while traversing the game Seattle region which involves a trip through this long abandoned Apartment D and D enthusiasts will immediately spot what others May easily miss a table clearly set up for an intense role playing sesh we're going to have to do a little zigzagging though the players are long gone their players handbook sorry guide book of Heroes remains along with spell books Dice and Miniatures although the extended spells and treasures book suggests a fantasy setting the figures on the table look more Warhammer 40K esque implying this is a sophisticated Homebrew campaign an implication backed up by expert touches like little posits to keep track of initiative order and oh my God Bluetooth speakers for Tavern Ambience dang I want in on this apocalypse letters you can find lying around the apartment along with a general lack of smashed furniture and skeletons suggests the dogs who lived here Sam and James survived and indeed thrived for a considerable stretch into the apocalypse it turns out they were playing tabletop games after the end of the world even inviting their fellow surviving neighbors around to play judging by the number of chairs at the table the notes reveal that Sam eventually flared after names got killed by cultists but we like to imagine Sam is alive and free somewhere albeit no longer in possession of any specialized minifig painting equipment I mean if you can call that living the only sign of him is his blood trail but as you watch the flagstone seemed to drink in the blood the cracks glistening red oh Jesus Christ on a stick Abigail don't be such a baby we either head through the door well forget that it just ate our war prey is a game about a space station populated entirely by scientists so frankly you can take it as red that there was a lot of tabletop popping off up there maybe too much seeing as the alien Typhon species the scientists were supposed to be researching has killed everyone on board but such is the diverting power of fatal for Fortress the in Universe D and D knockoff that many boffins on the space station are clearly obsessed with thanks to everyone having been killed by the aformentioned aliens your experience of fatal Fortress Is secondhand via emails and notes and recorded gameplay sessions all right uh Elias has stab fellow stab fellow has vanished into the darkness beyond the tower door and dang this game looks fun as hell look at these character sheets I'd love to play a campaign of fatal Fortress even if it meant sharing a table with Horden baffle flag asterus I'd like to roll to strangle Horden baffle please while clearly a d Andes pen and paper Adventure fatal Fortress actually serves as a double Easter egg also referencing ARX Fatalis prey developer arcane's first ever video game me cut you head [Music] off ARX Fatalis a fantasy video game from 2002 is set in a world where the sun has failed so everyone lives underground it also lets players draw their own spells with a mouse this is referenced by the Fatal Fortress Game Masters to sixth edition which also describes a magic system that lets players draw their own spells on the Fatal Fortress character sheet the skill section here is even a nod to the arc fatalist character creation menu or all in all fatal Fortress looks like an absolute Banger of a game fun enough to distract from the loneliness inherent to a research gig aboard a space station probably so fun you don't notice the Typhon all got loose and are killing everything that moves evidentially Tina why don't you start over welcome fine ladies to your first session of the most coolest game in the world bunkers and badasses as your bunker master I will be spinning today's tale of fantasy and wait why the hell are we playing this kids game oh you know maybe because shut the hell up B Tina she's right though shut up Borderlands 2 is set on a distant planet inhabited by Maniacs where the most abundant resource is guns not a great place then to play Dungeons and Dragons a game that depends on intelligent thoughtful cooperation and an abundance of more Earthly resources like pizza nevertheless Borderlands 2 proves that you can never Escape D and D anywhere because even in this most unhinged corner of the Galaxy sure enough there's a gang of Vault Hunters gather around a table brandishing handfuls of pointy dice roll for initiative Su welcome to bunkers and badasses a D and D alike within the Borderlands universe that served as the fantasy setting for the assault on Dragon Keep DLC a game within a game DMD by the high energy Tiny Tina it's a lovely day in flame Rock Refuge a far cry from wait didn't you just say the sorcerer messed up the town why would things be lovely uh whoops what I meant to say is it's Eternal Night and you hear spooky music and the whole area kind of smells like butts and dead people you can't let them start making demands like that Tina I mean I know it's collaborative storytelling but have her character crushed by a rock I would while other entries on this list are Sly Easter eggs or collectible notes bunkers and badasses deserves recognition for taking its D and D parody way further than anyone asked for okay how about a new boss he's a skeleton and his name is Mr Bony pants guy I am Mr Bony F sky does that work nearly 10 years after the assault on Dragon Keep DLC bunkers and badasses has become a real tabletop Source book and returned in 2022 Standalone game Tiny Tina's wonderlands a video game set within the imagined ttrpg rule set and hey seems like Tina has become a more assertive bunker master in the intervening decade and I Tiny Tina am the bunker master so what I say go and I say there's a magical Diamond buying a corn named but stallion who saves the day damn right you tell them Tina have their characters crushed by rocks I always thought the Miniatures were kind of cool but seeing him at this scale gives you a totally different perspective no wonder Pete likes his stuff one of the best things about Dungeons and Dragons and perhaps the secret to its enduring popularity is how unlikely you are to be killed by bees while playing the same cannot be said of the D and D adjacent tabletop RPG which features in grounded an open world survival game set in a Suburban backyard where everything is enormous because you've been shrunk down to minuscule size just like in Marvel's Ant-Man actually it's just like in Honey I Shrunk the Kids but Ant-Man makes us seem slightly more culturally relevant the supersized world is full of secrets and hidden treasures and a particularly enchanting scene can be found over on the picnic table here it becomes clear that an exciting game of let's see minors and meridon was recently in full swing if you can avoid the deadly U sized bees hovering dangerously around the picnic table there's a lovely tabletop scene to take in here you can find a guide book for the game the usual scattering of dice of of course and an extremely ambitious miniature maze in which we imagine the players spent many a hazy Summer Afternoon painstakingly measuring out the radius of spells that fire in cones ah Bliss the kind of thrill that you can normally only get by hang on let me check my cultural relevance cheat sheet winning 100 Roblox on a big Tick Tock hi who are oh my God yeah you're Rangers real life actual Rangers do you want to play robots and Rangers with us we'd be honored Wasteland 3 is a squad based RPG where you must fight to preserve or destroy the brutal leadership of a frozen apocalyptic Colorado as you weigh your options in this huge tactical turn-based game you might also want to consider that in the world of wasteland 3 it's apparently also a VI option to put down your weapons and Sack off all this violence and death and Frostbite in favor of playing DND D or at least a version of D and D specifically this one is called robots and Rangers because the most crucial aspect of Dungeons and Dragons is that its name is a litera this game can be found in an indoor corner of an abandoned nightclub where you're given a mission to respond to a noise complaint turns out that as is so often the case the kids are to blame they've kidnapped somebody let go after them it's a brief Easter egg but these teens whose game you can modestly influence if you're in the mood are clearly engrossed in a D and D style RPG the table is strewn with Pages drinks and a map while the GM hunkers behind a screen although it's not exactly clear how difficulty checks are calculated in robots and Rangers I roll a 65% perception to try to pick up the trail of the criminals 65% how would you roll that D 100 no wait I got it 100 d1s my guy is called Scott and he's a fourth level student my character is Dave and he's a second level rugby player I've got rert the six level computer hacker I'm playing knock and he's a Night level Soldier all right do you all remember what's going on perhaps you've idly wondered what DN D characters do to relax I certainly have but until my Homebrew Source book spa day hits its Kickstarter goal we can only speculate one game does offer a vision of high fantasy downtime however that game is Simon the Sorcerer 2o a 1995 point and click adventure set in a parallel fantasy world full of magic and monsters on his journey Simon the Sorcerer comes across a secluded Hut where a bunch of Hobbit looking fantasy types have sat playing a Pixy parody of Dungeons and Dragons but because they are in a fantasy world already their escapism is well we've come up here for the weekend to play apartments and accountants play what it's an exciting role playing game set in the world of real estate accountant and Technology you mean it's sort of like Dungeons and Dragons what's so interesting about Dungeons and Dragons that's just real life see cuz they're like Wizards so for them a you get it Simon can join the game of apartments and accountants at the point where the party is locked in combat with a fourth level interior decorator you've hit him now roll again for damage 12 [Music] again
