burst into the tank tonight a high-profile hairstylist who's brought his glamorous wife to accessorize his pitch hi sharks my name is joseph murad i'm going to show you my invention it is the latest innovation which will change the future of the way people style their hair at home it's a revolutionary product people cannot achieve professional results at home when they're blow drying their hair i've been a hairdresser for 31 years and all the way through my hairdressing years often i would teach customers how to blow dry their hair at home and they still can't do it at the moment the way people blow dry their hair they have to coordinate a hairdryer and a hairbrush people find that very very hard with my invention people would be able to achieve the same results we achieve in the salon when they blow dry their hair straight or wavy they can also put curls in it in about half the time and it's so easy to use you're able to demonstrate yes you can do you mind if i come up close and look please yeah sure come on down i'm very curious yeah that is a serious job required there yes so that's before isn't it stop it i'm trying to see if that's a fashion statement or i don't know do we assume her hair was straight first you're straightening it or you're curling it i'm just a bit confused okay at the moment it's curly so i'm straightening it fine it works better if i turn it on more detail now joseph i've seen heaps of these at in shops you know the straight converters with the curl why is yours different this is a hair dryer plus a hair straightener you can use them simultaneously or separately right joseph how much money you after for how much equity mine uh a million dollars for 20 percent so you're valuing your business at five million dollars yes and how's it doing so far well uh the the interest is incredible from just anyone that ever hears about the product they just like can't believe that oh there's a product and how do you define interest are you actually do you actually have sales at this point in time no no we haven't started telling i can see why it's worth five million dollars in it's awesome well and how much does it cost you to get to this point to this point now close to eight hundred thousand and i just spent 800 grand on to get to this point on patents mainly on patents in their research and development and the patent is not only in australia it's worldwide a worldwide patent so the other 750 thousand dollars would you spend on sorry i don't understand how you put 700 800 000 bucks into this what what is that what's the secret is there a trade secret or something we're missing here or no on patents worldwide it doesn't take a hundred thousand dollars in peyton so well i've had the painters now go in for nine years nine years yes and this obviously worldwide you're offering today it's not just australia like it's the whole the whole box and dice well the product will be sell board worldwide but of course today our negotiation is about australia so you're giving us a 5 million valuation on australia this business here australia i'm not even interested to go partnership worldwide with anyone at this stage okay i'll make it really easy i'm out okay so for a five million dollar valuation you must have some idea of the revenue you'll potentially earn from this thing one day yes can you let us know about sales your expected size okay my expected sales would be i would i believe at least a hundred thousand units the first year with the right market okay so what do you sell it for 300 so okay 300 bucks what does it cost you to make uh between 25 and 35 dollars to make and then land it landed in australia maybe about i don't know 45 landed here something like that um you think you can get them landed for somewhere between 20 to 45 i find that lack of information disturbing you're saying the unit cost is 25 to 30 and you think you can land them for 40 to 45 i think you said before yeah 50 max yeah that's what i think yeah do we know what it is yet i mean it's sorry keeps escalating so i'm curious you know what the the exact specific figures for the dollar i don't have it yet so what why if you don't know your numbers you've spent 800 000 bucks of your money on this you want a million bucks of mine and you don't know what it's going to cost you to produce well how does that sound when you say it out loud well well i know i know i know close to where it's going to cost me very very close well joseph i can i just i need to sum up where i'm at uh i'm actually a bit disturbed you've got no idea of the cost of the unit yet it was between 20 to 50 somewhere in the middle you're trying to sell us a crazy valuation on what we think may be an australian-only business i'm worried about the fact it's taken nine years to get to where you are now uh i'm disturbed you've paid eight hundred thousand dollars for international patents if that's true as a result i'm out joseph thanks very much and good luck but i'd like to address one thing this is how it can be used as a head right now it blows air like a normal hair dryer it's much easier to blow dry if you need to use it this way i think it's a beautiful looking product i mean obviously i'm not in the space to know how well it works naomi and janine would be much better equipped to actually assess that but i actually love the design and design's a big thing for me i think your valuation is crazy with respect it's like just way over the top there's too much risk involved i think and there's too much unknown i don't think you've really sold it sufficiently to me anyway to justify that sort of valuation so for those reasons i'm out sure would you like to see it working on with here no it's okay i think we're okay we're all right look there's no doubt that it's a great product and there's no doubt that you're passionate about it i think that's fabulous i do see that there could be global opportunity for it but the global opportunity's not included no that's right i know that's right i think that was a big issue but yeah well i'm looking for global businesses i want to see australia on the world stage and you know that's part of what i'm looking for and why i came here as such i'm out okay thank you joseph in my view you've made a classic mistake of some entrepreneurs and inventors you are a real specialist in the area you've come up with something which is clearly probably very innovative but i think you're trying to be the ceo of a consumer products global marketer and frankly if i were you i would be looking for people who spend billions marketing consumer electrical products you should be thinking about how do i get 50 cents every time one of these is sold and someone else is doing the manufacturing the supply chain and the marketing so for that reason i'm out but i think you should have a serious look at the way you're going to capitalize on this invention thank you very much thank you thank you very much thank you but we're wrong the sharks have made a big mistake they are going to regret it and i'm going to contact them in a year's time when the product's out there and i'm going to tell them what the product is doing and what they've missed out on hello sharks my name is laurence bardenhorst and i currently reside in wanaroo in perth i have a product here which is going to revolutionize the fishing industry as it is that simple and that smart i am looking for 56 000 stake for nine percent equity welcome to fish frenzy this product will be very sought after as in the world at the moment there are between eight and twelve percent of women fishermen fisherwomen who are very competitive and always seeking the edge i'm going to have to explain it so we have converted wave energy to perform useful mechanical work in the water it's the first of its type in the world and it has achieved beyond expectation so your goldfish at home in the tank with it moving its tail like that compresses and decompresses the water sending out signals hey i'm lost lauren just to confirm you won 56 000 for nine percent so you're valuing your company 622 000. do you think you could show us right now yeah yeah then we'll understand what you're pitching okay i have no idea what he's talking about need a bit of show-and-tell that's all what is going on here is this only for female fisher people or male 1 no no this is for for both we have a product in there you see how the piston moves up and down yeah that does that 360 times in an hour because of the wave you mean because the wave the wave is the peak and the trough of the wave so you hang it on your boat hanging off the boat right hang it off the boat i'm ceasing i'm ceasing and what has it got to do with women well there are 12 percent of women fishermen who are always looking for the edge this but now why why has that got to do with women though they like they're always looking for the edge this is an edge which nobody else has doesn't men want the eggs no we're lazy we'd hate to be oh no no the men know everything about fishing oh careful i think there's some women out there that will it's a well-known scientific fact that men are better fishermen than fisher than women right now you're being the wave right i'm so confused what is your product it just went up and down i still don't know what the product is my product is this that is in the water what does it do it lets out burley i was getting there oh berlin just for those of us who are not fishing in burley is it is a bait that you put in the water to attract fish to to catch fish you've got to create a fish feeding frenzy good okay you know i've got a burly bucket at home that's basically a bucket with some holes in it you tighten the side of your boat you toss it over what the boat does is it rocks up and down and it agitates the burley yes and the burley comes out you should go on shark tank i should go on shark tank have you sold any of these no i haven't i've still got to purchase the molds we've only finished with the r d stage now those are models how many of these things do you think you could sell because you're asking us to invest in a business worth six hundred and twenty two thousand dollars as a business a first time product probably a hundred thousand a year you think there's a hundred thousand fishermen out there who are going to need this no fishing women with an edge [Music] as a non-fisherman person thing expert um and a male and a male what i'm hearing is this is a bit of a gimmick to get fish to come in the vicinity of where you're fishing to improve your chances of catching that's what everybody does to cause a fish that's what green product does basically it's a bit of it's a bait right yes uh well you didn't get me on the hook i'm afraid uh but i wish you well i'm out this product is not a product that i actually would buy myself i'm out um you gave us the most confusing pitch i've seen in three years in shark tank i'm out so lauren as soon as i heard fish a woman i didn't understand i didn't think fishing was gender specific and you lost me i'm out you've got a really innovative mind but as a guy who's pitching don't get lost in the first minute of your pitch unfortunately laurence i'm out thank you thank you very much cheers everyone okay lauren look after yourself keep going let's have a good day i actually agree with steve i would say that is the worst pitch i can remember yeah so this is it next into the tank is brent who believes his business concept will set shark tails lashing i'm feeling excited ready to go we're here we're going to have fun whatever happens happens but we're putting our best foot forward [Music] hi sharks my name is brent and i'm the ceo of lashou lashes i have with me today darcy and tasha who are accomplished eyelash extension artists and educators today i'm looking for 120 000 for 10 investments and 120 000 loan over the last eight years we have trained over 8 000 eyelash extension artists in the skill of eyelash grafting empowering women to transition career fund themselves through university support their husbands provide for their families make a little extra hobby money on the weekends or build a lash business earlier this year we had an amazing opportunity to meet mel b from spy skills at a women's empowerment summit mel was so impressed with what we had to offer that we were invited into hollywood the very next weekend and over dinner and a few laughs in melbourne's house a brand new concept was conceptualized express eyelashes the mobile franchise business where we come to you and perform a set of eyelash extensions in the comfort of your own home we have created an app and when it comes to technology our app is state of the art cutting edge world class they tell me it's award winning when it comes to franchises we want to roll out a hundred franchises across america over the next 12 months when it comes to scalability we have no limit so sharks today this opportunity once in a lifetime with a celebrity involved we want you to come on board with us and let us lash you brent wants to take his eyelash extension business to the us when it comes to scalability we have no limit with a celebrity already attached mel b from spy skills is involved brent is confident he can secure a deal in the blink of an eye i'd like to see what happens so with one tweezer we'll come in and separate pick up a lash slide it into our glue out and please we actually attach it to the skin to the lash to the individual lash to the individual lash we call it grafting so it's grafting and it doesn't touch the skin and then you only lose it when you lose the lash is that what your natural lashes will grow out correct and we'll fall off and hopefully we'll come back for a refill treatment [Music] so is it a mobile service in australia or is it a shop it's a great question in australia i'll our businesses education and training so we're not investing in that business are we well that is not correct today we're talking about our brand new american release that's not yet launched we're hoping to launch in la how are you connected to america then it's a great question mel b's come on board she's so excited so she's a spice girlfriend correct she wanted to be here today at equity mel is a true business partner and equity partner but how much what's the percentage um it's 50 50 yep with mel who's going to run the existing australian business while you're doing this that's a great question the last year um six months particularly i've been working on duplicating my staff so we can rotate our staff into america our trainers will travel uh i will travel brent 50 of the time you're going to be in australia 50 of time in the us um and you want 100 of my money in 100 of my investment i don't get it you might load the us in all the costs and so you make more money in australia it's a very unproven unknown entity it is unproven and it is unknown and that is exciting about it that i love so you're going into california you're ready to launch how much are you going to charge for the franchise how long are you going to take to get them up and running what will the franchisee make out of it we will be selling franchises in california for 25 000 a franchise right we would expect a lash artist franchise would generate 54 000 revenue full gross revenue for one of those businesses one of those franchisees is 54 grand per year do you see a problem with that it doesn't work fifty four thousand i i go to the us a lot i know it's a a much less expensive place to exist this is this is based on american value rates where the franchise holder could even employ a staff member to conduct the treatments oh dear so that's going to be a whole lot of people south of the border that will be employed by by the lash king running around l.a using undocumented undocumented workers give us their take-home pay you've done the numbers on it they take home pay after expenses that's a great question no no look how much do you think they're taking home is at the end of that entire business over the year 25 000 that's not a good business for a franchise operator though what will your franchise fee be that you're 25 i don't see how this works 25 why would that could be 25 25 normally it's five six seven percent if four maybe in the twenty-five percent we've included excuse me a baseball an area developer mate sorry i'm out okay thanks thanks jenny look honestly on on the face of this brent i mean these numbers here are scary i'm out thank you steve brent i've seen many many australian entrepreneurs who've got fabulous businesses here take them to the us thinking it's going to be the gold mine and what happens is they forget about what got them there which is their businesses in australia don't give up your australian business keep going but i'm not a partner for you i'm out thank you so much naomi you've had a little entrepreneurial seizure i think stimulated by your spice girl friend good luck it's not my type of investment i'm out thank you so much ben bren i admire your ingenuity you're in love with this whole technology of lashes but i think frankly for me you're the biggest problem no disrespect i don't think i see a track record of selling managing a franchise network particularly in the us which let me tell you is very hardened to how franchise networks should work having a celebrity as a partner and having you as the expert on lashes is not enough i'm sorry i'm out i really thank you for your feedback thanks for coming on shark tank thank you all so much for your time i really appreciate your words and what you said and you know like thank you i look forward to seeing you in l.a we'll do i'll take you up on that take [Music] care but i think his challenge is he doesn't know how to sell and run a franchise in california no that's his problem many things so i just think we should always be honest i was honest oh don't start now crew i'm the only honest one amongst us oh i wasn't honest [Music] good io my name is richard rosai i represent tropo bicycle and i'm pitching for the investment of five million dollars in return for the equity of 49 percent what's it rather the investment is 100 financially secure risk-free and the projected return is five billion dollars by the year 2020. i'm sorry was that five billion five billion yes five you [Music] inventor richard plozay has blown the sharks away by asking for a five million dollar investment it is reinvented bicycle company the investment is 100 percent financially secure risk-free and the projected return is five billion dollars by the year 2020. i'm sorry was that five billion five billion yes five billion so we're going to turn 5 million into 5 billion yes in how many years by the year 2020 risk-free as well risk risk fit wow the outtake on that would actually be a bit under 2.5 billion this reinvented bicycle goes faster with less effort provides better exercise and bodybuilding benefits enhance comfort safety and enjoyment of the ride it also has a turbocharger for rapid burst of speed and it will be the fastest street bike in the neighborhood and after that the troporiza will win the tour de france also consider this 80 percent efficient traditional bicycle against hundred percent efficient and faster tropo bicycle i've done all the calculation i'm mechanical engineer by trade and to put it simply the traditional bicycle is obsolete and the australian tropo bicycle is the bike for the riders of the future richard i just want to clarify exactly what the product is so is it the pedals that you've put on an existing bike yes yes it is up to here as you can see it's like a traditional bicycle but please note that this bicycle pedal is the actual invention well i want to have a crack at this you're my guest this should be interesting yeah it's a bit hilarious can we duck for cover at this point if you know how to ride the bike it's awful hang on what i don't know how to ride a bike have you got it let me finish let me finish please if you know how to ride the bike your natural tendency is to go in the circular motion and it's confusing you here because you go down and you try to push it further yeah i'm very confused okay let's line up your importantly pointing at us oh [ __ ] jesus okay does it feel like five billion dollars mater [Laughter] okay it's a funny thing but once once you get it i think you actually start going faster yes yes exactly exactly you're riding a bike can you stop yeah i want a wheelie i'm stuck just keep going round and round that's good here we go thank you yeah that's an interesting feel richard i have never before heard a pitch that you invest money you get 100 financially secured it's risk-free and the tour de france guaranteed to win in four years the whole business could be worth five billion dollars you sounded tricked i sound perplexed and i sound as if i'm having a um dream no you're not you're not i'm giving you hundred percent security on how the thousand times return once this type of a bicycle starts winning cyclic tournaments use your imagination yeah i don't believe you could enter the tour de france you can't enter a recumbent bicycle in the tour de france did you know that in a recumbent where you sit back yes yes because they'll win because they're heaps more efficient so that's why you like sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry i was trying to answer your issue yes just keep quiet like any other business there will be issues that we that i would need to work around how can we actually get this thing worth five billion dollars in four years it's not such a big number if you take into account there was 150 million bicycles sold around the world last year so for five billion dollars it takes only five percent of the sales oh five percent but people say that with numbers it doesn't work that way in the real world well it doesn't for numbers i'm sorry i'm giving you numbers so how do you fund this great expansion money that you if you want to invest will go into a trust for 12 months and during that time you can withdraw any time if you don't like what's happening you can withdraw the money there is such a thing as a government business financing the government finances dollar for a dollar if i have five million dollars today i'm putting the money in business i get five million dollars as you previously as a previous board member that federal government agency who gave that money out i can guarantee you it doesn't work that way i can 100 guarantee you that will not get up and it doesn't work that way and will not go he's guaranteed your money by having your money set in a bank account and let the government give the five million dollars and he uses that and that money is there and you can take it and is this the government's gonna go sure there's a there's a term for that it's called fraud why is that a house because it's a dollar for dollar co-investment fund you have to have a guaranteed fund from an investor a guaranteed fund means investor can't take it out that's that's just that's just how guaranteed funding works so yeah it doesn't work i honestly don't fundamentally believe your business i actually think your numbers are crazy you've asked us to trust you that this is going to work that you can win the tour de france with a bike i don't believe is actually eligible you've actually given us a fundamentally ridiculous investment proposal i'm out i think that's fairly definitive if i can make a small comment a similar story was with the mobile telephone the idea got rejected everywhere so richard for entrepreneurs the worst lies you can tell are the ones you tell yourself i don't want to waste any more time it's a ridiculous valuation just preposterous but i'm out i'm a firm believer if something sounds too good to be true it's never true i'm out i need to mention i have a presentation on youtube richard the amount of money that you've asked for is assuming that you've got your business problems and understand your business all sorted out i also have to mention that i've had a lot of experience riding the bike along the beaches of gold coast sunshine coast and i've seen the reaction of people and how they approach me and how interested they are richard i look forward to seeing your journey but i'm out thank you look i love the fact that you're having a go you're an inventor you're a radical thinker i have invented other things before that i have invented self-cleaning toothbrush for example but i was not able to sell it have you sold one single buy yes i sold around 20 bicycles 20 in australia yes what did you sell them at six hundred dollars what did you buy what did it cost to make them um about the same months cost you two thousand six hundred to make it and you've sold it for two thousand six hundred at the end of the day i i think this is the rude position of commercial reality that you have such a long way to go and you're asking so much in terms of the valuation of your company i can't go there so where i'm sitting i'm thank you for your support i appreciate that thank you very much thank you very much richard i believe in my idea i am confident that this is not end of my story if they do regret it it will be at their own despair next wow mix billion dollar guarantee the first 1 billion business on shark tank yes the next entrepreneur tonight is mick who's keen to generate a little business with a shark i haven't slept for three days because i've been around the pit stream we had about a million times i think i've got something that i believe the sharks are going to love and they're going to help me to take around the globe i believe i will get a deal i've studied all these sharks and i know where they all come from hi there my name is mick ryan i'm 46 years of age and i come from perth in wa i'm the sole founder and director of the company called mickey blue australia we're your one-stop free championship it's a privilege and honor to introduce you to the best generator i believe on the market it's a product that i have developed over six years my main target is the caravan industry because we promote free camping power which is a massive industry now [Music] when i worked in the offshore years ago as a chef i was in the navy as a chef as well and we used to get a month on and a month off so i got sick of flying overseas all the time and when i brought a caravan and then i didn't want to go to overpriced caravan parks and i wanted to go and park by the river or park out in the bush and i wanted something that gave me confidence to run multiple things in the caribbean at the same time i want to run the air conditioner in the microwave the taste of the kettle and these units are designed as fully functional fully portable and fully unbreakable my generator is remote styled as well so they operate within a 30 meter radius by remote [Music] control [Music] and we've also incorporated in this model an inbuilt trolley and wheels so you can wheel them along your veranda these boxes that are built to put onto every caravan and you can now run them in the box at night so your generator doesn't get stolen and you can also lock them away as well which is a massive thing that a lot of caravans don't have because of the size of them we're 20 kilo lighter than my major competitor the recommended retail is 1899 i'm seeking 2.5 million dollars for 50 percent of my business for that i want to promise you i'll be the next entrepreneur to make you a billion dollars so clarify that's 2.5 million dollars for 50 of the business yes valuing it five million bucks yes [Music] the first one billion dollar business on shark tank yeah that's a big huge big hairy audacious goal that's a huge b hack tell me more about that okay um because i've studied the industry and the hurricane industry in the states and the power outage industry the motorhome industry and we're going to target instantly to get in and do all the rv motorhome uh shows over there which is instant success um one percent is very achievable and because um i've already got the environmental protection authority to land and straight on the wharf in the states and this model that we have developed we have the smallest model out of all the major players and i know who they are so you're saying size does matter being small gives you a competitive advantage yes mick one of my hobbies is planning for the apocalypse so i look at generators quite a bit that's true it is one of his hobbies they haven't quite gone the full monty on the whole thing yet so i look at generators a lot this is pretty expensive for a generator well not compared to the major players and the want for this product is absolutely out as well you said something else you said you had a one-stop free camping shop yes so you have another business yes in the mick ryan empire i've got a big shop in midfield which is in the west all right so you do how much in sales for that per year well i did it last year i did 1.89 million okay so how many staff do you have i have four all right including you yes so how many of these have you sold i've sold around 5 000 so far you've sold 5 000 units so what does that add up to in in revenue well last year was 1.89 million then the the gross was 700. sales of mickey blue was 1.89 million what 1.8 wasn't 1.9 million your one-stop free camping shop combined okay okay do me a favor here mike i'm gonna ask you some questions can you please do me a favor because it's really hard to understand what the hell you do excluding the generators what does your camping shop do the rest of it gives me about 300 000 a year okay so camping except for generators 300k a year yes and generators is 1.5 million a year yes okay right excellent we're getting places okay so give us a year by year blow them for the last two whatever and just so we can understand is this offer the generator in the store or is it just this product the generator is the one that i turn over more than so no no no if you can answer that question that'd be great just so we know what we're investing in the generator is the product so it's just the product that we're purchasing so maybe when to steve's question then just give him the numbers on the generator then yep okay only around 300 000 for the first 12 months the second year was around 580. uh their third year was about 700. i've increased it about 250 000 that there are abouts per year well done nick thank you what was last year last year it was about it was 1.5 congratulations what's the number dropping out the bottom the real cash last year we did a net profit of 228 000 after paying all wages including your own but you're talking about the store there though you're talking about the store as well so you can't you can't come here and offer a business then give us numbers on things that we can't even get do you your store does it occupy premises where you also run this business yes yes and staff in staff i mean there's cross contamination of pollination depending here look at it to be honest of this business with you other store business and that's okay we uh we have to understand that we have to understand do we want the entire business or the just to generate a business or whatever it might be and and what are the issues surrounding that the 228 on 1.5 is that a full year's worth of results yes but well done 228 with 1.5 that includes his store i agree with that and i'm okay with that because i think the reality is that all the values in his generation so make um well done you're running a good small business but unfortunately it's a very niche market and i can't see the sales going ballistic i'm out thank you you seem if i may say a little intense and upright i'm just a bit nervous that that's all are you a bit nervous okay you know is being in business keeping you awake at night i haven't slept for three nights oh how come well ever since i was given this opportunity to come on this show and the last three seasons i've wanted to meet you fine please all right i'm not gonna be this stiff nick i i have a question about the two and a half million it's a lot of money so i want to know what you thought you were gonna do with that two and a half million stock it was completely to go to stock so apart from the two and a half million what help do you think you need what are the big gaps just the contacts that you may have contacts um just to get me into andrew obviously you live in los angeles uh obviously to get me over there and then become making blue america mick you've asked for 2.5 million mate and you're after some contacts to be honest i want to give you my contacts after a coffee okay no need to actually ask me for you know stick me up for two and a half million bucks and 50 of your own business at the same time you know i think i'd have to say horrible valuation i think you've got a great business uh that you should continue to own but it's not something i can invest in i wish you well i'm out thank you mickey um i think you've really underestimated the ability for the 2.5 million dollars worth of stock to sell through quickly it is always longer and harder than we think it's going to be for that reason i'm out thank you dave seriously congratulations yeah it's not easy to get a business to to turn over 1.89 million dollars but in your head you've got one business what you're offering today is splitting that business yet you haven't even in your head separated it out because all the answers have been the whole business so because you haven't solved that problem i can't invest today i was doing i'm out thank you for teaching me that one too that's good my pleasure good luck thank you [Music] there's a lot here that hasn't come across very well today it's hard to get a million half bucks turnover it's really hard
