welcome back to the sideburn hunter today I wanted to talk about five great hunting cartridges for the new hunter now I'm talking about animals all the way from antelope up to moose North American big-game animals and keep in mind that when I'm planning a shot I'm planning out to 300 yards but I'm expecting to get within 100 yards all of these cartridges are perfectly capable of taking most of those big-game animals in those kind of ranges for a new hunter we don't need to be working beyond that we simply need to get closer also keep in mind all of these cartridges can be found in most modern popular bolt-action rifles and all of them are more accurate than you are right now it's kind of like a motorcycle you get too far into a turn lean harder that's the same case with these cartridges the gun is absolutely a better shot than you are so you can shoot any of these and be very accurate with them let's start with number one this is the 6.5 Creedmoor this is a relatively new round to the game it was introduced in 2007 and was popular among the precision shooting group and then became adopted by big-game hunters so this is a perfect cartridge I'd probably take it all the way through mule deer this is a 0.26 for diameter bullet and in Colorado 2 to 3 and below are not legal calibers to shoot so this is on the small end of the range of what you can take big-game animals with in Colorado so your standard ar-15 chambered in 2 to 3 is not legal you need to step up to a next size bigger and I'd recommend the 6.5 Creedmoor and the six and a half Creedmoor is great for women youth for people that like to have very little recoil this is a great round number two is the 270 Winchester so this is a point two seven zero diameter bullet it was introduced in 1925 and if you notice the the 3006 here these are very similar cases the 270 is simply a next down version of the 30.6 so you have the same powder load but shooting a smaller smaller diameter bullet so this makes it a very fast round and is very flat shooting it was popularized by the outdoor writer Jack O'Connor so a great round there next up an iconic round is the 308 Winchester so it's shooting shooting a 300 or 0.3 0-8 of an inch diameter bullet this is available in a are 10 style rifles yet again it's a good all-around cartridge it's good for antelope all the way through I would say you could take elk easily with it I might not push it into the moose territory this is my favorite round this is number 4 this is the 3006 Springfield it was introduced in 1906 and it's a 30 great 30 caliber it's a 30 caliber bullet this is sort of your iconic hunting round and it can shoot all the way up through moose so any of these animals with the correct bullet this is a great choice it's one of those cartridges that you can find at any hardware store in the nearby area to where you're hunting so if something goes awry you can absolutely get more of these I love the 30.6 it has similar job to the 308 but any big-game animal can be taken with the 30 at six number five on our list today is the 300 Win Mag this is the Big Daddy of these cartridges and really as big as you need in North America until you start getting into dangerous game cartridges so you noticed this gate has a belt on it it's a case derivative of the 300 H&H which is what I personally shoot not something I would recommend for at the average Joe I simply inherited rifle it has a lot of powder charge so it shoots very fast shooting a very large bullet the problem with something like this is you're increasing your recoil quite a bit and also you start to get very expensive to shoot a box of quality hunting ammo for twenty rounds can be as much as sixty dollars so you know consider the price on some of these as you think about them the 270 308 and 36 are rather inexpensive the 6.5 Creedmoor while small is a specialized round might cost a little more to shoot and then absolutely the 300 Win Mag is costly round to shoot as well something you might consider as an alternative to the 300 Win Mag is the 300 Winchester short Magnum so this has a slightly smaller powder charge however very similar bit ballistics to its Big Brother since this is a shorter round it fits in a short action rifle meaning that that rifle could possibly be lighter weight and more accurate so this is something that you can certainly consider as an alternative to the 300 Win Mag if you want something a little more specialized so certainly consider these rounds number one the sixth and a half Creedmoor number two the 270 Winchester number three the 308 Winchester number four the 3006 Springfield then number five the 300 Win Mag with a runner up of the 300 Winchester short Magnum thank you for watching the side burn hunter if you haven't already please subscribe to our Channel also check out our website the side burn hunter com for more information and like this video if you liked it until next time you've been watching the side burn hunter
