hey everybody kathy here with pain pouring by kathleen miller i'm going to be doing something different today i am going to show you how i do my base how much i put on my base and how i achieve my colors in my base paint as you can see i have it set up here and i use color place from walmart there is no silicone there's no glue and there's no water it's white parentheses satin that is my base paint what i'm also going to show you is how much of this base paint that i put on my board or my canvas i'm also going to show you how i achieve my colored bases so you won't get confused you will see it right here so let's get started these are the golden paints by the way that i put into my colored bases so okay gonna get started here people need to lift weights okay this is a smaller canvas now if you do a larger canvas of course you're going to need more of the base paint but i will show you how much i need to put on here i have a lot of questions that people ask me how much base paint do you put on and what you simply did is uh taking the paint out of that big heavy gallon can and put it into something small just like this i got these at walmart i fill them up so i don't have to lift up that can every single time i have that size oh and i have this big size that's all you need okay so what i do is i start out by putting a puddle in the middle then i spin it and if it doesn't cover all of it i go back and i get a little more and i go around the edges to make sure that i have my canvas covered and that's it all you need go around like this yeah that spinning evens it out very nicely does it does and if you have a few bubbles you lightly lightly torch it that's it you don't want to get a skin if you still have some bubbles i always take my little skewer and i just pop my bubbles i don't have any bubbles okay second if you want to get a colored base this is how you achieve a color base have a little cup put some of your color place ready use white house paint in it this one i'm going to put a little uh teal in it i like the color teal and it's always those golden fluid acrylics that you use to color your base correct it's always the golden fluid acrylics okay what i do is i just put a little bit in there take my little stir stir it up you can make as much as this as you want just make sure you have it covered you don't want to leave this open you need to cover your paints and you notice i didn't use a lot of it so that's my color that i like if you want it darker just add some more of the golden fluid and you don't want the high flow i think i have very important okay this is the golden fluid also this is high flow which you do not want you only want the golden fluid it does not say high flow anywhere on the bottle so what i do is if you want to have your colored base this is how you have a colored base instead of your white now if you're new you probably haven't seen this but some of the older people that have been around on our channel we're talking about old and old you're talking about our in our videos in our videos okay this is how i do my drizzles now this would be a colored base say this is this colored base these are how i do my drizzle of my colored base paints you can also just dump some on too if you want with a little heavier coloration if i i think i've seen you do that where you would take it instead of drizzling with the stick you drizzle some around just right out of the cup well you can if you want but if say you wanted a little heavier um coloration to it so that's all there is to that okay that's all there is to it then what you do is you then put your paints on the top or your pigment that's it this is how i do my base so i hope it's clear to everyone second segment here is going to be about my pouring medium with my pigments and my paint so stay tuned for that okay everybody i am back and we're on to the second segment which is the pouring medium that i use with my paints and my pigments i'm going to show you exactly how i achieve what i get in my creations so first of all i always use the vivid enamel which is from color art second part of it is the rust-oleum triple thick polyurethane that is my pouring medium i do not use anything else it's for every creation that you see this is what i use how i get my pouring medium is i take 15 mls i do not use a scale i use these spoons i get these spoons at the dollar store so if you have a dollar store near you you can get these spoons for a dollar and they come in a set of four okay in that cup is the vivid enamel okay that's what i took it from behind okay well i just want to make sure they might not have seen that and you can see it's pretty thick okay this is what you want to get that much put it in my cup and these are 3.5 ounce cups they are in our amazon shop it's an ideal size for doing a batch correct okay i better do each one of these separate or they might be confused a little bit whenever i do my vivid enamel i always wipe out my spoon so if i'm doing a lot i usually do like eight cups at a time so i don't have to keep wiping out my spoon the next 15 mls the same spoon is the rust-oleum triple thick polyurethane just like that same thing put that into your cup very easy simple recipe okay wipe this out even though they're being mixed i wipe them out because you won't get the same consistency if you have anything in your spoon so here we go take these two you mix them up now these two things combined is called your pouring medium correct yeah i'm gonna actually i'm gonna set that on here because it's easier to see okay so now what i'm going to do is i'm going to mix up my pigments for you and i'm pretty heavy with my pigments um you don't have to be as heavy as me show them that spoon please okay it's just a little bitty spoon that you get from color art with your pigment okay now this is usually probably what you should use however i use a heap i like a lot of color you're supposed to wear a mask when you do this as well but you're not going to hear me talk so i'm holding my breath yeah and you just mix this up scrape your sides always keep scraping your sides scrape your stick whatever you're mixing with scrape scrape scrape stir stir stir you want those pigments to all be really really blended into your pouring medium can you see yep okay this is the thickness that you want makes a little mound and disappears so you do um that same procedure for uh all the different pigment brands that you use right same thing you can use any brand pigment with this pouring medium okay that's your pouring medium for just your pigments now we're going to move on to the paint so there you go for this now i'm going to move that out of the oh you're going to do it right there okay because that way they can see very okay so now for my paints i'm using my amsterdam paints you can use any brand paint that you want um if it's not a tube paint it's going to be more liquidy so just be careful not to add a lot of that paint into this pouring medium okay so i'm taking my 15 mls of my vivid enamel and like i said if you want to achieve what i achieve you need to use the vivid enamel and the rust-oleum triple thick polyurethane i do not use anything else i'm not gonna well i better because don't cut corners now no i better it's just i'm so used to doing this i don't have to wipe my spoon out because i know how much to use so it's just kind of weird now we're using it now i'm using the triple thick rust-oleum okay same thing that i just used for my pigments wipe out my spoon okay give this a little stir okay now this is my acrylic paint so when i say pea size this is what you're gonna do one two i always start out with two you might need three it depends on the thickness of your paint that's a beautiful color too this is the greenish blue by amsterdam okay now you're going to notice a difference here between this and the pigments i'm going to show you how to remedy that okay see this is going takes a little bit longer for it to disappear but it disappears now usually if you have this overnight you want these covered you need to cover them don't leave them like this if this thickens up on you the next day no that's the or even the next day this is for the paint i use josanja varnish too thin just a couple drops into the paint only this will thin it you want your sanja varnish in the paint only okay see how it disappears now yep you don't need a lot of the josanja varnish that's how you thin your paints this is your paints with your pigments you want plain water if it thickens up you want plain water i don't have to put plain water in that right now because it's not thick but if it was thicker tomorrow plain water in pigments josanja varnish into the paints okay i hope everybody understands that okay now i'm going to move on to the paint and the pigments how you can mix them yeah you've had a lot of questions about whether you can do a combination of paints and pigments in the same pouring medium correct okay same thing 15 mls of the vivid enamel wipe it out and 15 ml of the rust-oleum triple thick and if you if you're not following me pause it and take notes it's the easiest way i had people want me to uh send them recipes and i just i can't do that well this is such a simple recipe just stop your video and just take notes because it doesn't change this is the recipe it's very very simple when phil says in every video it's a simple recipe this is the recipe this is how i achieve what i achieve okay mix mix mix thirst or stir and what i do with my vivid enamel and my rust-oleum i always put them in cups like this because i don't want to have to like do this every time with this i don't want to have to dump this so i just take a cup cup voila it'll last for days like that days okay so now this is how we mix our pigments and our paints together you do a lot of these combo correct paint and pigment mixtures to get just the kind of color you're looking for i do a pea size of my paint okay just one piece size one pea size of my paint and a scoop of my pigment and if i want to add a little bit more color or a different color i just add a little bit of a different color if i want one yeah that's true you can pull put multi-colors in and i'll show you i'll show you what i do with that too okay so this is the bluish green by amsterdam and this is the teal zircon by primary elements when you're done mixing put it between the two and kind of see how it changed i will and say okay this just you know doesn't do do it for you you wanna have a little pizzazz so what i'll do is i'll go over to my table here and let's just say okay i just want to have a little bit of pizzazz here this is just like a white sparkle it's called abalone shell i just take that dump it right in that's easy enough yeah yeah as you can see can you see the sparkle on the spoon with it oh yeah you can yes the white yes okay that's what you will see in here it'll really give it a sparkle not that they're not sparkled already but this will just give it a little zippity-doo-dah and you know me people zippity-doo-dah still the right consistency now if it isn't the right consistency in the morning it depends which one you have in there either your paint too you put more paint in than pigment or you put more pigments in than paint this i put more pigments in i will take a few drops of water to thin it depending what you use more is what you have to use to thin it and to reiterate it's pigments you add water and paints you have josanja correct okay and whichever one if you mix these whichever one you have more of like i said in this i have pigments i will use the water so this is the difference oh yeah you can see definitely see a difference in the three different correct so this is your paint these that's just your plain pigment this is your pigment and your pigment and your paint that's how you know the difference and you can see the difference in all the colors yes okay that is how i make my pouring medium okay everybody stick around because coming last in the last segment is my cell activator i'm going to show everyone how i make my black magic and my white lightning that everybody wants to know so stick around for the finale because it's going to be awesome see you in a bit hey everybody i'm back now this is the third segment and this is my cell activators so i'm going to show you how i make my black magic and my white lightning and then i'm going to show you also how i make a colored cell activator so to start out with i have my three cups which is going to be my black cell activator white cell activator colored cell activator to achieve that i am using australian floatraw that is what i use in my cell activator i used to use the american flow troll it just got to be just a pain to me because you have to strain it and i don't want to go through that anymore so i bit the bullet and i bought this australian and this goes a far ways yes it's expensive but there's a lot of it in it and you don't use that much for my recipe so i am using 15 mls of the australian flotrol i'm going to put that in all three cups that's all the flow troll you need 15 mls i do not use a scale ah okay first one second one third one that's it for the photo and i just made this up just to show everyone so you can remember what i'm making okay that's your australian flowtraw that is all you need for the floetrol 15 ml's so on to my black magic for this you need five ml's of paint which makes it a three to one ratio and that is for the amsterdam paint it might change if you use like golden or any other brand winsor newton this is all you need of the black and it's three to one and i always wipe out my spoons because if you use i don't care if i use black again i wipe it out after each time because you won't get the same consistency if you have paint left into your 5 mm ml spoon and i keep my spoon separate because you don't want to get any other color paint then you just stir stir stir stir stir stir stir i've been getting a lot of questions on this so phil and i decided to redo a whole video on my base my pouring medium and my ca but i use the oxide black amsterdam paint always you can use lamp black you can use any color black that you want i prefer my oxide black and like i said if you use a different brand of paint it might be four to one yeah i think uh you you'll show the consistency that you want at the end here okay you want to keep scraping the sides scrape your spoon or your stir got to make sure it's really really stirred up yeah you get a lot of questions especially on cell activator people seem to want to complicate things so much with different recipes and and this very simple recipe that kathy uses uh seems to work very well for her yeah and this you know um this is my old recipe um i love this recipe i liked the new one too but that is unavailable so this is what you need if you want to do this and i i make this up only a day ahead of time i try to use it within three to four days at the most i do want to mention that this cell activator recipe works best with kathy in conjunction with kathy's pouring medium recipe if you don't use what i use you're not going to achieve what i achieve okay okay do you see how that's aside because you got the black on here we go all right see how that springs that's what you want you want that to spring up like that if it doesn't spring up you have the wrong consistency that is that's it that is my black magic okay we're going to go on to the white lightning and on the white lightning you can use any kind of white paint that you desire you can use the amsterdam that's my go go-to my go-to is amsterdam and again you're just using the five milliliter spoon right okay oh shoot i do want to mention that if you've watched this whole video kathy started with the base and her pouring medium and now the cell activator of course and all those in conjunction together are what give her the results she gets yet you need to use the same base the same pouring medium and the same recipe for her a flow troll and paint the cell activator that's how she gets the results if are there any changes that do you make in any of those three steps you may not get the same results that's why i said it with the cell activator you might you might need to use a four to one it depends on your paints i only use uh tube paints but it i think for activators the most important thing is if they're using a completely different pouring medium this cell activator may not react like it does it doesn't mean it's for you yes it won't you know i get a lot of questions like oh can i use you know glue and water you can use whatever you want i that's up to you you won't achieve what i get if you don't use what i get it's not that you can't use all those things you can use glue you can use water you can use other types of non-tinted paints um with polycrylic you can use all that all of those it's just if you want to achieve what i achieve this is how i get what i get so that's what you need to get yes it's all an integrated process to reach the final result right uh the right products the right techniques and the right recipes all have to be in coordination and that's you know i get so many questions every day so i figured you know what we're going to do this uh video now and if you don't get it right away stop stop the video write it down just write this down and put it in a little book i mean phil can tell you i have pages upon pages yeah you take notes out literally every video you watch i do so i mean it's just and it's really important that you scrape your uh stir and your sides because a lot of times it gets stuck on the bottom and stuff and these are 3.5 ounce cups and i only put one in here i usually mix like two or three at a time because i go through these so fast when you do a video and a large swipe into everything you can go through it pretty fast and i don't have it just sitting around okay it should be good see how that springs that's what you're looking for people you need it to spring if it doesn't spring it's not the right consistency okay now we're going to go on to the colored cell activator and you can use any colored paint you want i suggest for your cell activators that you use two paints um the paints that come out of the bottles and stuff they're they're way too thin just way too thin okay this one is called red violet by amsterdam and again kathy has the flow troll already in the cup 15 milliliters and she's simply adding five milliliters of the tube paint yep okay using colored cell activator like this can have a very nice effect if you coordinate the cell activator color with the colors you're using in the project so and i mean there's sometimes i use four colored four or five colored cell activators with my stacked swipes that i do yeah those stacked layered swipes yep yes three four different colored cell activates besides my top swiping cell activator gonna put some really neat effects into the picture so i want to stress the three steps that you've seen today the base the pouring medium and the ca it is for my creations that i do there are different pouring mediums for different creations this is for what i do right this predominantly for drizzles swipes and blooms right it's not going to work for anything else it's not going to work for your dutch pores not nothing like that you need a whole different recipe for for those okay okay let's see here see how that springs okay very cool so there you have it you have your black magic you have your white lightning and you have your colored cell activator and all it is is flotrol and paint um 15 mls of the flotrol 5 mls of the paint stir stir stir spring spring spring cover cover cover cover them people do not leave them open you will not have to um when they spring spring spring and they're covered you will not ever have to thin them if you have to thin them there's something wrong you do not have the right consistency so don't ask me how to thin the cas you do not thin them so i hope everybody enjoyed this video i hope you learned something please please please um i had to do it for you because i have so many comments and um leave me a comment and uh until the next time everybody i hope you have a good day and uh make sure you watch the entire video and please subscribe to
