#458 Dover Air Force Base The Life of an Owner Operator Flatbed Truck Driver

dover air force commercial gate well i can't find a gear there we go all right good morning it is monday after thanksgiving it's the 30th of november we're over here i spent the weekend over here in dover delaware visiting my dad and some family and it's hard to see but we stayed at the dover downs let me focus in a little bit we stayed at the dover downs casino uh the reason i stayed here was because they had truck parking and it was secure so they had security walking around and stuff so anyway um and you can see it is raining this pouring down rain so i think we're gonna get wet today it is just eight o'clock our appointment's not till 10 15 but uh we're gonna go ahead and get the truck started up we're gonna get the key panel so we get the truck started up and uh let it warm up a little bit all right here we go [Music] so it's gonna idle rough for a little bit you guys are probably shaking a little bit but uh we'll let it warm up a little bit i did come out and start it yesterday afternoon charge the batteries up but all right let me get it started and or let it warm up and then we'll get going talking a bit they have a uh outside air museum down here with some planes and stuff my dad was a pilot in the air force and uh he flew some of the planes not the planes that are in there but the same kind of planes that they have over there but they were they were closed not much happening today so uh you can uh watch me drive in the rain here all right let's pay attention to how this works i drive to dover air force commercial gate well i can't find the gear there we go then turn left onto the ramp to dover air force base commercial gate now they've had some good signage all the way up to this point but hopefully they still do little air force commercial gate make a left hopefully that's right change things up this stuff is top heavy when i was coming through the mountains over there in west virginia i had to be careful the air force commercial gate half a mile windshield wipers are a little noisy this morning now when we get done here we're gonna head up to elton maryland to the ta truck stop hang out up there all right here's the gate for turn off of the commercial gate all right let me get this stuff unloaded and uh talk to you guys in a bit so quarter mile your destination will be on the right all right so we're back where we started i uh i don't like doing military loads this one paid good i will admit this paid good that's why i did it but either it's me or i would say 90 of the military loads is a pain in the butt they uh so i go through security at the checkpoint i said where do i need to go he sends me to the building i go in there and i talk to the airmen in there and they say you're not in our system come back tomorrow and i was like that's not right so they make a phone call they send me to another facility that uh i'm supposed to go to i go over there and he says no you're not supposed to be here how come you didn't call this guy and i said i don't have any phone numbers he said well they always put the phone number on the packing list that's the packing list we hardly ever open the packing list so where i gotta go is somewhere over here i've had people ask me you know do they give military shipments to veterans or anything like that no the government works just like everybody else let me give it to the cheapest one and uh if you ever do a mass move all you gotta do is look around at the trucks that are loading and there's always a handful of trucks that you just know that they don't know what they're doing but anyway we get to go past the air museum where i wanted to go yes i am a little irritated because if i wouldn't have fought it they were going to send me away they were going to send me away and told me to come back tomorrow then i had to go make another appointment to come back tomorrow he said somewhere i will see a big pile of these things so if you didn't know anybody would you know you're supposed to be out in the middle of the field with military shipment so this is the way they told me this ain't even a road so katie was going to book a load for me to load today and i told her no because military shipments are notorious for being screwed up what should only take an hour to get off your truck takes six and it still don't look like the right way oh all right i think that's where i gotta go over there man i would never have found this by myself all right let me pull in here see if i get these things off the truck all right we got unloaded the guys unloading were pretty cool you know you just gotta remember you can't get mad at everybody those guys don't have anything to do with why it was so hard to find their place so i do have in interesting facts about why this building is way out here because i asked him i said why are you guys way out here so he said in 2006 he said you could look it up on on youtube 2006 they had a airplane crash here from the base of the big c5 crashed right off the takeoff he said luckily nobody died everybody survived but uh the plane crashed right after takeoff and it landed in this field right here and because of all the jet fuel and everything the farmer couldn't grow crops anymore so they paid the farmer for the field and then they built that building out there so that is the story of why that building is out in the middle of the field is apparently the government the us air force owns that field they had to buy it because of the plane crash all right so it was a stressful start to the one day but we're not gonna let us keep us down too much we got about an hour up to elkton maryland to the ta truck stop and then it it i know it'd be hard to see but if you look straight ahead that's a big c5 the big white plate and that's the little uh air museum that uh one day i'd like to go check out and then i guess this is the end of the runway right here too so that's uh that's what happened all right let me get out of here and uh i will talk to you guys when i think get up to uh see that truck right in front of us the new thing is called the eld crawl see how slow he's going he's going that slow so he doesn't trip his eld over to driving drive through the parking lot that's slow i don't know gotta do what you gotta do sometimes well yeah that's the new thing called the eld crawl i don't want to get close but i don't want to bump it all right let's go uh let's go outside and we're all parked up for today and it's done raining it's been raining most of the day we're at the ta here we'll go right for a little while christiana actually drove right by the high school i could see it through the woods but anyway a long time ago all right that's it for today hey go anywhere but man i am stressed out sometimes it's rough dealing with the military shipments i know a lot of people say oh i want to do the military but they're okay um i stay i try to stay away from mass moves because mass moves puts a lot of trucks in one area so you've got 20 trucks trying to find a freight out of one area so anyway all right that's it we're done for today i'll talk to you later thanks for watching
