christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit good morning everyone good morning father i know you're all excited today because on this day the third sunday of ordinary time our holy father pope francis announced this sunday to be regarded as the word of god sunday and you're all here because of that right all right good uh yes we're called to uh as our ho you father said uh it is encyclical we're called to not just study scriptures but become immersed in it and to disseminate scripture and the role of each catholic person is called to proclaim sacred scripture these things are what we're called to do we're called to be heralds of uh good news and to be familiar enough with uh sacred scripture that we're able to help others see and understand the nuances of our faith so when there's times that we fail to do so when there's times we fail to acknowledge our catholic faith before others let us ask god for pardon and his strength so that we may do so in the future you are sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life glory to god in the highest and on earth peace the people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king oh god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit and the glory of god the father amen let us pray almighty ever living god direct our actions according to your good pleasure that in the name of your beloved son we may abound in good works through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen thank you i'm sorry there's no breaking open the words liturgy for children today but we will continue next week a reading from the book of nehemiah ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly which consisted of men women and those children old enough to understand standing at one end of the open place that was before the watergate he read out of the book from daybreak till midday in the presence of the men the women and those children old enough to understand and all the people listened attentively to the book of the law ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that had been made for the occasion he opened a scroll so that all might see it for he was standing higher up than any of the people and as he opened it all the people rose ezra blessed the lord the great god and all the people their hands raised high answered amen amen then they bowed down and prostrated themselves before the lord their faces to the ground ezra read plainly from the book of the law of god interpreting it so that all could understand what was read then nehemiah that is his excellency and ezra the priest scribe and the levites who were instructing the people said to all the people today is holy to the lord your god do not be sad and do not weep for all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the law he said further go eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared for today today is holy to our lord do not be saddened this day for rejoicing in the lord must be your strength the word of the lord [Music] your words [Music] refreshing the soul the decree of the lord is trustworthy giving wisdom to the simple your words [Music] the precepts of the lord are right rejoicing the commands of the lord is clear enlightening your words [Music] the fear of the lord is pure enduring forever the ordinances of the lord are true all of them [Music] let the words of my mouth and the thought of my heart find favor before you o lord my rock and my redeemer your words lord our spirit [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters as a body is one though it has many parts in all the parts of the body though many are one body so also christ for in one spirit we were all baptized into one body whether jews or greeks slaves or free persons and we were all given to drink of one spirit now the body is not a single part but many if a foot should say because i am not a hand i do not belong to the body it does not for this reason belong any less to the body or if an ear should say because i am not an eye i do not belong to the body it does not for this reason belong any less to the body if the whole body were an eye where would the hearing be if the whole body were hearing where would the sense of smell be but as it is god placed the parts each one of them in the body as he intended if they were all one part where would the body be but as it is there are many parts yet one body the eye cannot say to the hand i do not need you nor again the head to the feet i do not need you indeed the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary and those parts of the body that we consider less honorable we surround with greater honor and our less presentable parts are treated with greater pro propriety whereas our more presentable parts do not need this but god has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it so that there may be no division in the body but that the parts may have the same concern for one another if one part suffers all the parts suffer with it if one part is honored all the parts share its joy now you are christ's body and individually parts of it some people god has designated in church to be first apostles second prophets third teachers then mighty deeds then gifts of healing assistance administration and varieties of tongues are all apostles are all prophets or all teachers do all work mighty deeds do all have gifts of healing do all speak in tongues do all interpret the word of the lord hallelujah [Music] the lord sent me to bring black tidings to the poor and to proclaim liberty to captives [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us just as those who are eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us i too have decided after investigating everything accurately anew to write it down in an orderly sequence for you most excellent theophilus so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received jesus returned to galilee in the power of the spirit and news of him spread throughout the whole region he taught in her synagogues and was praised by all he came to nazareth where he had grown up and went according to his custom into the synagogues on the sabbath day he stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet isaiah he unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written the spirit of the lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor he has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind to let the oppressed go free and to proclaim a year acceptable to the lord rolling up the scroll he handed it back to the attendant and sat down and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him he said to them today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing the gospel of the lord in our first reading today we hear how ezra the priest and scribe with nehemiah the king of israel at the time have been able to come back to jerusalem after the babylonian exile and gather all the remnants of the people israel together thereby the temple mount even though the temple has been destroyed he builds a platform and ezra the priest begins reading the word of god the law of the lord to the people he is beginning at noon you know excuse me he is beginning at dawn all right and he goes all the way till noon reading to men women children at least to the age they could understand so there for hours listening to the word of god for the first time in decades for during the babylonian exile they were not allowed to practice their faith they're held captive and with the diaspora no one really knew whether or not whatever scripture passages were being recited were actually being recited by those who knew i.e the levites the priests and the scribes who took great detail in presenting them so they are authentic the people understood these words as being the presence of god in their midst and they were so thrilled having this done that they had their faces prostrate laying down listening to the word of god as it's being proclaimed by ezra it's resonating to the people and they are overjoyed and they listen to the word of god for hours and hours so i was thinking we ought to set this up the same way next year you guys all in we'll begin at dawn and we'll go to noon but that is what happened and why the people were so enamored because now they realize what they were missing what they took for granted they were robbed of having the presence of god you see for the jewish people each and every sabbath they would go as custom to the synagogue so they could listen to the word of god so they can hear and have it interpreted how is applicable in their life and they would become refreshed and renewed and would be able to do things in light of god's law so much so that it would benefit them provide blessings to the families and help and assist those who are in need this would be the common practice in our gospel reading we hear how luke is writing his gospel to theopolis theopolis is two greek words theo being god philo being lover or friend of god so when you have theopolis he's writing to all people who are friends of god and want to hear exactly the truths of the one true god and so he that is luke is writing everything down as he recalls it with the use of eyewitnesses okay and the history as he is aware of it and he painstakingly goes through this and then he goes on in this reading to acknowledge that jesus now has returned back to his native city of nazareth and he as custom like most jewish people would go to the synagogue on the sabbath and he understanding that is the right of each and every male in the jewish faith to actually proclaim the word of god with the torah in front of them so jesus does as is the custom and he reads from isaiah and he rolls up the scroll just as ezra did years before him and then he said these words are fulfilled in your midst in other words jesus is the embodiment of those words of the scripture it is god who is with them god the word has taken on flesh and is proclaiming to the people the teachings of christ god is in their midst and they are overjoyed why because god is with them again what could go wrong if god is part of our life he's there to sustain us to feed us to nourish us to bring glad tidings to us and to the poor to help bring healing and strength to all the community this is the participation of the people we hear how even in the early church though the people were complaining amongst themselves because some people got to proclaim the word of god some people got to be this some people got to be that and they all wanted an equal share and paul says to me we are one body we can't say well i'm the hand and i want to be the foot or vice versa we need to understand that we all through our baptism and the power of that holy spirit are called to proclaim the word of god we're called to africa for sacrifices in the name of god for the atonement of sins of others and we're called to live nobly for others setting them example as being a blessing for others it all incorporates needed participation and everyone is important and significant but when we look at our church today how many people take to heart the importance of scripture in their life how many people go to adult ed scripture classes how many people take the time to become learned in the faith how many people actually hold on to their uh promises made at their baptism that they will be prophets of god and seek to become lecters in the church to have this privilege of proclaiming god's word to others so it can resonate in their mind in their hearts to say the word of the lord not your own words but the very word of god and have the people respond thanks be to god the great honor that it is but we are having difficulty and getting people to participate in all aspects of the church we no longer want to have to have somebody come up and bring up the gifts we see as an inconvenience when asked by the ushers we go oh no not me i'm not having a very good hair day when we all should be prepared we all should be wanting to participate to represent the faith community you as a person bringing up the gifts bring up those things that god utilizes from the faithful all your sacrifices all the the work that you've done throughout the week presents it for the people on their behalf brings it up so it can be perfected in the work and perfect working of christ on the altar how many of us think about our priesthood and how we're called to offer sacrifice how many of us are truly trying to participate we will have in the future i assure you opportunities forthcoming during the lenten season four classes to become lectors and extraordinary eucharistic ministers and altar servers and greeters and sacristans we will have the availability for you all to be trained in doing these great endeavors we will have scripture classes we will have adult education classes we will have the opportunities for people to play a greater part in participating in the work of the church all of you've been called oh you've been summoned but how many are really responding again try to appreciate what jesus said he chose the eucharist to be the means of us encountering him on a regular basis so that we could be nourished and fed strengthened by his word receive blessings so that we in turn can bless others allow yourself to think is god really calling me to do something more for when you think about it and you understand that this is a right and a privilege that you have that when you take the time you will find joy you'll want to continue doing so allow your minds and hearts to be renewed through the very love of god in the liturgy of the word and the liturgy of the eucharist and may blessing upon blessing come your way so that others in our world may share the very love of god he who gave his all so that he could be in us and we could be in him god bless you all i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us man for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen trusting in god's abiding presence overjoyed with the understanding that we're called to participate in this loving saving plan we present these petitions that all bishops priests and deacons will be ever more fervent in proclaiming the kingdom of god let us pray to the lord that in a world torn by strife god's people may shine forth as a prophetic sign of unity let us holy father almighty eternal god for you so loved the world that in your mercy you sent us the redeemer to live like us in all things but sin so that you might love in us what you loved in your son by whose obedience we have been restored to those gifts of yours that by sinning we had lost in disobedience and so lord with all the angels and saints we too give you thanks as in exultation we acclaim [Music] are full of your glory [Music] blessing is he who comes who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith is [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and dennis our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that we the blessed virgin mary mother of god and blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and with all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father and the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at our savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be our lord please be seated at times you have to uh simply acknowledge and honor somebody who's been with our parish for a long time who's done an exceptional job uh but has been choosing to retire and i want to introduce to you because many of you might not have gotten to know her although she's been working here for quite a few years i introduce to you our bookkeeper joe please stand up so everybody can see who you are before i say a few words on her behalf i'd like to at this point in time uh to hear from all of you represented by our trustees uh please marietta and tom clarice thank you morning i see you hiding back there now that i'm up here you're probably glad you've been nice to me all these years joan now that you've been promoted to the exclusive retirement club stage of your life the fun begins no more day-to-day pressures and interruptions from our spiritual leader father paul no more preparation for deadlines that ended two days prior to the assignment no more preparation for staff meetings where everyone attending is expecting you to have all of the parish financial information in your head and available on demand you've served tirelessly over the past 14 years with several pastors as our parish secretary and later as a bookkeeper as with most back office administrators the people who depend on you the most often miss the whole picture of those assumed duties handle regularly behind the scenes day-to-day handling of bill payne no easy task in a parish where cash intake fluctuates greatly from month to month recording weekly collections and special collections reconciliation of parish accounts and regular reporting to the diocesan accounting office helping organize and handle the accounting for fundraisers and special parish events including catholic strong campaign being an integral part of the finance committee and preparing quarterly reports budget projections and various reports for committee meetings all of the above duties by themselves are evident of how difficult and time consuming jones job has been however joan has had to deal with the additional pressures of church closings reduced staff reduced parish income and rampant parish illness all as a result of the covet pandemic joan is to be commended for a commitment to saint mary's over the past 14 years and particularly during the past two difficult and trying years dealing with the additional job stress created by the covet pandemic joan i'm sure i speak for all of the staff and parishioners at st mary's in commending you for a job well done you'll be truly missed and we sincerely wish you the best of luck good health and happiness in your future as you celebrate your retirement god bless [Applause] good morning everyone every family has that person who is the glue that holds everything together our parish family is no different to me joan was that glue that person who helped hold us together yes joan was our bookkeeper and joan is a numbers person and numbers are something i don't understand very well but her attention to detail and patience with me in understanding how it all worked helped me as a trustee to see the bigger picture for all of us but for joan it wasn't just about the money the collection the saint mary's financial stability everything she did was with the future of the parish as her primary concern how cont how to continue to grow and always move this parish forward joan has been an integral part of this parish community and family amazingly joan never felt like she did enough but to say she went above and beyond for saint mary's would be an understatement she had a passion for this community that never wavered she rolled with the changes always keeping the welfare of the rest of us in mind jonah's a friend to the parish and i'm happy to say a personal friend to me as well joan i've enjoyed your humor your honesty and i will truly miss our lively lively conversations in your office as a trustee i thank you for all you have done for us as a friend may god bless you on your retirement [Applause] before i get into um my long windedness i would like just to share a few words from um a previous pastor father ed mayer he wrote to me he said joan was very was a very good bookkeeper and so much more she trained sharon to be our parish secretary and continue to be a mentor as she was a calming influence for the staff even when there were difficult times whenever there was a diocesan audit she was there and was able to document any and all information so as to bring forth a good evaluation for our parish joan was also a true team player who handled problems professionally and with great diligence jones served saint berry's parish well and was a big help for me personally i hope her nothing but the best in retirement she deserves it father ed mayor i thank father ed for his words five years when i came here i was meeting the staff and as i sat down and met with jones she informed me that she was retiring my heart sunk and i begged her to stay she reluctantly did so and i can't thank her enough because the transition would have been very very difficult and although she was aged certainly to retire i i asked if she could hang on for a few years in the back of my mind i knew this day was coming but i was hoping to squeeze whatever else we could get out because she had an understanding of not only where the finances from the parish come from the generous donors those who can be counted upon she had a great sense and awareness of how people could better contribute and you know how we can better market the parish she was instrumental in all the fundraising things that we did and took in accounting of all those things she had great ideas and she brought them forth to our finance council and encouraging you know people to start a ways and means committee to ensure the parish succeeds well into the future she has done an awesome awesome task for us and i can't thank her enough as my predecessor said beforehand she is truly a great friend and i know and i wish her nothing but the best and i know now that at least jackson will get all the attention that he needs that's your little dog and so again we we we're going to miss you but uh please always keep in touch so that we as you heard uh regard us family so i thank you once again and i invite anybody here if you want to share a few words with sharon she'll be in the the old chapel there we have some refreshments some donuts if you like to participate you most certainly can once again joan great great job job well done god bless [Applause] with that being said all your questions must be oh well who's going to be doing the bookkeeping um well i got somebody well somebody really good and somebody who's near and dear here's our new bookkeeper fortunately for us deke bob has uh degrees in uh he told me not marketing but accounting and finance uh he's worked at seven companies and he's been teaching you know finance at rowan university for how many years now 14 years uh so he's very intelligent very bright and his incapable hands and has been receiving hands-on training from joan for the last month and a half so i think there will be a really good transition and i thank bob for coming on board and i again thank joan i can't thank her enough the lord be with you and with your spirit and may almighty god bless you all in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit amen go in peace glorifying the lord by your life thanks be to god have a great week everyone as we go forth let us sing number 643 praise to you o christ our savior [Music] o praise our savior word of the father calling us to [Music] to you life jesus christ you are the word who calls us out of darkness you are the word who leads us into life you are the one who brings us to the desert glory to you lord jesus christ praise you o christ our savior word of the father calling us to life son of god who leads us to freedom glory to you lord jesus christ [Music] you are the one who leads our future glory to you lord jesus [Music] us to christ son of god [Music] welcome to pius podcast i'm vince i'm mrs barbado and i'm stanley thompson today on our show we'll hear pharmacist and catechist kate barbados story on how she kept moving through the pandemic as a professional and as a mother after that we'll ask father dominic a question about our faith in the we want to know segment then end with another quote from the bible so let's begin [Music] all right we're going to start with how has your job as a healthcare worker changed through the pandemic and what lasting impact has it left i would uh definitely say i think that's a bit of a loaded question so in the beginning the pandemic i think everyone remembers all the cheering and accolades that went to healthcare professionals and i think as time has gone on and things become much more political without really having a total end in sight i think it's become much more exhausting for myself and a lot of my co-workers i think we went into health care as a way to help individuals you'd go to work you would help different people hopefully get better and you would come home and feel pretty good about yourself in your job and now for the most part like a lot of people and frontline workers everywhere i think the monotony of it has become a little bit exhausting truth be told i'm not even really sure at this point in my life if i'm recommending people go into health care anymore well it's a pretty good answer how has your faith gotten you through some of the challenging times in your job we'll just stick with the pandemic for right now i think when that first started it was really terrifying i kept the rosary in my top drawer that maybe i didn't pull out very often within a week or two of things shutting down and realizing how scary things were in new york and northern new jersey and and all around the world i pulled that rosary out and i pulled that rosary out every single night and it was it was praying for for the vaccine i mean even then you as a healthcare professional as a pharmacist you knew that was the answer there wasn't going to be a medication that was going to take this away as quickly as it did and i prayed a lot for that there was a lot of hard work there were many hours that were put in the beginning just praying that we didn't become like new york or north jersey um and and thankfully we did not but it was comforting to have that i think with the stress and anxiety it was a nightly ritual that that became part of my routine again our final question is how's the pandemic impacted your family life and family faith i went to catholic school for 12 years so the idea that i would ever be sitting on my couch in the living room watching family family mass on the tv like we'd watch a sporting event honestly at times it's still a little mind blowing in the beginning i mean it was great because you felt disconnected but you know having the new puppy that we had in the house in the middle of church come running through um trying to say it's time to get out of bed and we're not necessarily all dressed and you're just running down like you would to be running down for a sporting event it was definitely it was definitely different i think like everything else we kind of grew accustomed to it i do think once church opened back up again there was a real fear i mean i constantly was going into work seeing people sick for for different reasons that we still weren't 100 sure so doing the online church i was extremely grateful for but at times even doing it it's still a little surreal i did still do ccd my daughter always wanted me to still teach her class and that last year was the last year i could have taught it so i did still teach her which that was really interesting too because i've taught ccd i think five different years and that was definitely a different level of class because you heard fears and you teach religion in a slightly different way especially the thing i think that was most astounding with my own children is although i wasn't able to be home that first month of the pandemic is how much the kids and even my husband were able to actually see the world slow down stop and smell the roses the sporting events stopped and things like that so in my world it didn't necessarily slow down it kind of sped up a little bit i mean as those things pick back up again we at least as a family have tried to stay connected with the fact that there was some enjoyment of not having to constantly run everywhere at every single moment [Music] now it's time for we want to know this is where anybody can send us a question about our faith check the podcast description for the submission link if you have a question so today's question is why do priests wear black priests wear black as an outward sign that is easily recognizable because of their identification as another christ as somebody who is a sacrament person years ago uh they did dies for clothing in different colors the more colorful dyes were more expensive kings and queens and suitors and all kinds of courtiers used to wear purple and yellow and because they could afford the dye that came from especially roses the common people wore either off white or black because it didn't take any kind of a rose or color to manufacture them and so the priests lived in clothing that was like the common people and when things changed in fashion we don't wear cloaks and all that sort of thing but we kept the color harking back to the heritage of identifying with the common people would you say it has anything to do with vows of poverty well because it did not cost anything it was in a way a sign of poverty because you didn't have the wherewithal to wear a multicolored thing so in a way yes in a way you didn't wear it because of poverty you were because it was what everybody else was wearing and you wanted to identify with common people but it's true you could say that black or white would be a symbol or of poverty because most people didn't have any kind of money unless you're a chicken today is halloween as we're recording yeah and my friend vince over here is going to go out trick-or-treating in a chicken suit i just saw the picture it's fairly big and he's going to go to a gated senior citizen community i hope he doesn't scare them but we're going to see this suit in the parish life of saint mary's orphan which of course he regrets telling me but the chicken is white so it's a poor chicken i would estimate it was about nine feet tall we go out and sell tires on the side next to the guy that's holding the tires at the local tire dealer vince you can join our vacation bible school whale i was going to say that earlier you can do something with this you could do a teaching chicken right in the inflatable you could do it like for for friday's inlet you can say no to the chicken yes to the fish and now here's vivian with a positive quote from the bible and after you have suffered a little while the god of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory with christ will himself restore confirm strengthen and establish you [Music] thanks for being with us i'm vince and thanks for listening to pious podcast
