morning everyone good morning struggling a little bit with my voice right now um but anyway we gather understanding the importance and significance of who we are and the power of our prayer and how his disciples were called to live our life above and beyond what the ordinary expectation of others is we come knowing that there is something we can do about the effects of sin and evil in our world and this part of the mass we take the time to acknowledge the sins of us the sins of the world and ask our lord for pardoning mercy you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord mercy r may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen glory to god and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king oh god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the devotion through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen uh the children's literature okay [Music] [Music] a reading from the book of sirach when a sheave is shaken the husks appear so do one's faults when one speaks as the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace so in tribulation is the test of the just the fruit of a tree shares the care it has had so too does one's speech disclose the bend of one's mind praise no one before he speaks for it is then that people are tested the word of the lord lord is good to give thanks to you [Music] it is good to give thanks to the lord to sing praise to your name most high to proclaim your kindness at dawn and your faithfulness throughout the night lord [Music] the just one shall flourish like the palm trees like the cedar of lebanon shall he grow that they are planted in the house of the lord shall flourish in the courts of our god [Music] they shall bear fruit even in old age vigorous and sturdy shall they be [Music] declaring thou just is the lord my rock in whom there is [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters when this which is corruptable close itself with incorruptibility and this which is mortal close itself with immortality then the word that is written shall come about death is swallowed up in victory oh where where o death is your victory where o death is your sting the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law but thanks be to god who gives us the victory through our lord jesus christ therefore my beloved brothers and sisters be firm steadfast always fully devoted to the work of the lord knowing that in the lord your labor is not in vain the word of the lord oh [Music] shine like lights in the world as you hold on to the word of life [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus told his disciples a parable can a blind person guide a blind person will not both fall into a pit no disciple is superior to the teacher but when fully trained every disciple will be like his teacher why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own how can you say to your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye you hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother's eye [Music] a good tree does not bear rotten fruit nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit for every tree is known by its own fruit for people do not pick figs from thorn bushes nor do they gather grapes from brambles a good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks the gospel of the lord our sins today's gospel verses start a few lines after the heading each section of a of the verse has a heading the heading for this one is judging others those first couple of verses were the completion of last week's gospel and i think it's worth reading them again today to understand what is going on this week so the last two lines last week where jesus said stop judging you will not be judged stop condemning and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lap for the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you we have asked for this every day we pray forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us god is telling us not to judge and that is a good thing for two reasons the first reason that is that we are all terrible judges the second reason is that god will be the judge he will judge all of us and this is good because god knows our hearts god knows us better than we know ourselves we should all believe that god is merciful if not who among us is worthy of eternal salvation god is merciful and he will shower us with mercy but maybe in a sense of fairness he is going to shade his judgment based on how we have judged others how we have measured others how we have shown mercy the implication the implication implication is that if what we have done is fair in our minds then we would mind it if that is how we are judged hopefully you are all thinking what i am thinking i do not want to be judged the way i have judged others jesus tells us two parables today both are very comical we see jesus's sense of humor the first one is about the blind leading the blind have you ever seen a blind man leading another blind man of course not the idea is comical imagine where they would go imagine what trouble they would get into and how much imagine how much they would get hurt i think of mr magoo if you remember mr magoo each one is blindly trusting the other one to lead him around they think they are safe they think they are being led in the right direction but it's just a matter of time before they fall into a ditch i guess this could happen a blind man could be standing at the crosswalk of a busy intersection another blind man walks up beside the first and says help across the street the first blind man thinking that the second man was offering help not asking for it for sure and together arm in arm they step off the curb and into traffic you know what will happen cars screeching to a stop onlookers screaming warnings let's pretend that they make it safely across they both say at the same time thanks each wondering why the other was thanking him this is the way it is when you are spiritually blind and trying to lead someone else you might think that this verse means we should make sure we are not following blind guides and it is but it is also telling us that we should make sure that we are not blind guides let's ask ourselves are we spiritually blind jesus is calling us to be leaders he is calling us to be disciples we should take this call with responsibility we must prepare ourselves for this task if we ourselves are blind we cannot lead others who are blind blindness is a symbol for those who are in darkness those who do not have faith disciples are able to share the light of faith by becoming better formed in their own faith disciples must become teachers of the faith jesus says that we must aspire to be like the teacher like jesus although we will never be greater than the teacher just like a blind person cannot lead another blind person a student cannot lead a teacher the second parable about the man with a wooden beam in the eye in his eye imagine it a beam not a sliver not a speck not a small stick but a big 20-foot beam i have seen pictorial views of this a man with a large beam sticking out of his eye socket he could probably only see splinters out of this eye he does not manage to think that he sees it he does manage to think that he sees a splinter in his brother's eye jesus asked how can you say to your brother brother let me remove that splinter in your eye jesus calls this man a hypocrite isn't that what would we what we would be hypocrites noticing the weaknesses or problems in others but not noticing the weakness in our own lives jesus says to remove the being first from your own eye then you will be able to remove the splinter from your brother's eye let me give you an example i was driving down cooper road when i saw a person on a small scooter in those little tiny scooters in the side street and realized that he was going to make the turn and pull in front of me i started to say myself say to myself look at this idiot he doesn't know how to drive but then i noticed it was a friend of mine i slowed up to give him plenty of room he never noticed that it was me but if it wasn't my friend i probably would still be talking about how crazy this driver was and imagine if i was on a scooter i would expect everybody to stop and let me go here comes bob i started judging then i changed my judgment then i changed my outlook we are all given to noting the defects of others more readily readily than our own we judge our neighbors while not recognizing our own faults one way to combat this is to pray for humility to pray for gentleness in dealing with others when jesus said let the one without sin cast the first stone what happened maybe we should remember this when we are ready to throw stones to throw judgments jesus cautions us to correct our own weaknesses and faults before we can effectively help someone else when i change the whole world changes we are terrible judges but even if who are not terrible judges would it make any difference would anything change though jesus spoke in terms of good tree bad tree good person evil person in reality every human person is a work in progress at any time a person is a mixture of good and evil a person is both redeemed and unredeemed jesus does not want disciples who do good things like the good tree jesus wants disciples who are good who have acknowledged their faults and have worked on them through time and effort and prayer to become truly holy people of faith the good tree always bears good fruit in the next section jesus says the gospel coming up why do you call me lord lord but do not do what i command because lord i am redeemed and i am unredeemed a good tree bears good fruit every tree is known by its own fruit a good person out of goodness in his heart produces good an evil person out of evil produces evil for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks let us profess our faith together i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us man for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and obtained man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son he is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen trusting in god's mercy understanding the power of thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty eternal god through christ our lord for through his paschal mystery he accomplished the marvelous deed by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death summoning us to the glory of now being called a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation a people for your own possession to proclaim everywhere your mighty works for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the wholesome power of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from me for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] is [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray the partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and dennis our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that we at the blessed virgin mary mother of god and blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] at our savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and of the lord be with you always peace [Music] hey [Music] [Applause] have mercy on us [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] peace [Music] behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb arguments number 785 behold the lamb my numbers [Music] we will die [Music] for jesus [Music] oh [Music] with understanding [Music] is [Music] be [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] let us pray nourished by your saving gifts we beseech your mercy lord that by this same sacrament with which you feed us in the present age you may make us partakers of life eternal through christ our lord please be seated first off i uh like to thank the deacon for his homily today it was most fitting i enjoyed the the comedy that he actually exists in the gospel and uh he pointed that out well uh also i'd just like to thank pat galley and her husband who brought forward yesterday with their parents 25 children to receive the sacrament of penance for the first time yesterday they were very very well prepared uh far better than most catholic churches was that that impressed when they came to the sacrament they came knowing that if they are able to get that speck out of their eye they can serve that many more people that much better they have an understanding that they receive power that it wasn't just about having their sins wiped away is about them becoming active participating their participants in god's loving plan using the power of the prayers and their gifts to produce good fruit and so we have 25 people more inclined to do that and i just thought it was wonderful also this coming week is the beginning of lent and ash wednesday is this week march 2nd uh it is a day of fast and prayer and abstinence so there's no eating of meat there is uh i think it's the ages 14 on up uh but certainly we encourage and try to teach our children you know to participate in this endeavor uh that fasting and almsgiving if you want to give throughout lent especially to the house of charity that's always beneficial and also your prayers have great power and meaning at that this time so on ash wednesday ashes will be distributed at our masses and services masses are at 6 30 a.m and i promise if you come at 6 30 a.m and want to get in and get out you will you'll be done within a half hour i promise i have the mass i'll make sure and then you can go to work and or you can come to the 8am mass or go to the 7pm mass in the evening there are prayer services with this just distribution of ashes i believe or and may make communion at 12 10 p.m and at 4 30 p.m so it's an opportunity for you to start out your letting season with the understanding that the purpose is not about just giving things up it's about using the powers that god gives to you so that you can produce fruit uh it is something very important and significant and uh in our in your parish bulletin if you could take one there is a schedule of all the different things you can participate in and be part of whether it be small christian communities whether it be uh coming to the stations of the cross and we have different opportunities for that going to the sacrament of penance uh there are classes by offered by father dominic and by lisa caso and a scripture class offered by myself there's training for all to serve excuse me for you extraordinary eucharistic ministers and lecters because we need more people to participate in these ministries and the deacon will lead those classes on march 19th again we need people to stand forward and know that they're called to do and by doing so uh you allow good fruit to flourish within our parish so up thought there was a flyer with the opportunities okay uh and then there's a flyer in there about the importance of bringing up the gifts this lent we will begin again inviting families and individuals to participate in the offertory procession this flyer highlights the purpose and privilege of doing so take a look at it it is something important it is something special and it's an honor to do so for you represent the the gifts of the many uh which are perfected at the celebration of christ at the altar uh simple things often go a long long long way one of the most favorite st mary's events is also back and it's our chili challenge and that returns saturday march 19th at 6 p.m this time we're feeding ourselves and others bring your best chili or complimentary dish and bring a non-perishable for the food pantry registration is required see our our app website for the most radical abortion bill ever allowing abortion at every age of pregnancy and banning pro-life laws nationally and in our state this monday february 28th the senate will vote on it please visit our website under action alert to contact your senator and ask them to vote no to this act uh the super bowl of caring results are in together we raise 1996. and 1040 pounds of non-perishables st mary's youth group thanks everybody including parents youth donors and our adult volunteer team beginning next weekend the collection for beginning this next weekend there is a collection for ash wednesday in the central that goes to central and eastern european you know churches uh a collection box will be out in the gathering space for your donation you'll also remember that the collection boxes of the corners will no longer be there and we will have ushers uh distributing the baskets everywhere please try to understand if you you prefer somebody else to give your envelope or how you wish you want to do it that's up to you but uh the understanding of the importance of ushers inviting people to offer their contribution also goes along with that same theology that's in the bringing up of the gifts uh at this point in time i now invite bill dave bellagion uh to come forward he he is uh the secretary of our current parish council he in turn is going to call forth the names of all those on our parish council so that they can be installed properly with a blessing thank you good morning i i'd like to ask all of the parish council members to stand in place and i will then call you together in the holy spirit i want you to respond lord hear our prayer for the holy church of god that we may grow in christ and in the bond of common fellowship we pray to the lord for the members of our parish council that they may give witness to the presence of christ by by lives manifesting faith hope and love we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all concerned with the welfare of this parish that they may be open to the movement of the holy spirit and be always ready to carry out god's will we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer and for all who are gathered here that we may reach to carry out carry the gospel of christ to all people bless the members of this parish council let your spirit enlighten their minds and guide all their actions that they may be renewed in faith united in love and bring to fulfillment the work of your church to your greater honor and glory we ask this through christ our lord amen i'd just like to thank them and for your nominations and their acceptance uh they in turn will help guide the parish for the next two years a parish council person is elected to a two-year term uh and they could be asked by the pastor to continue on in an extra year so at his you know uh things but elected members or to outnumber those who are appointed by the pastor this way they can't be a pack of my own cronies so to speak so they're there to help you these people as they turn around and as you give them applause i want you to know these are the people you can come to if you have an idea of what you can do to meet the pastoral needs of our people at all levels all ages so please turn around [Applause] uh i invite you now everyone to please stand we know the different things that are happening in our world and we have to concentrate on the fact that our prayers uh do transcend space and time and that it's important for us in times of crisis that we take the time to utilize our prayers to benefit not just these those here in our parish but people throughout the world in particular with the struggles going on in ukraine we would like you to join in song to let there be peace on earth number 785 please [Music] and with me [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] we [Music] let us [Music] let peace [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] the lord be with you and may almighty god bless you all the father the son and the holy spirit amen go in peace glorify the lord with your life thanks be to god [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] and with your spirit oh it's the boss hello stanley i'll need you to get a poster for tomorrow i will not that wasn't the right thing to do especially if it was my boss or even my parents i should call back and say that i'm sorry hi um i'm really sorry about not listening it's okay as long as you go and get it done okay i will that was a lot like a conversation in today's gospel where one father told his two sons that he needed something done out of my pajamas so now let's hear what happens the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you o lord jesus said a man had two sons and he went to the first and said son go and work in the vineyard today the son answered i will not but afterward he apologized and went the father went to the second son and said the same that son said i go sir but did not go [Music] jesus asked the disciples which one of the two did the will of his father they said the first the gospel of the lord prays to you lord jesus christ we just heard jesus use something called a parable a parable is a small story that helps us learn a lesson jesus did this a lot this parable had two brothers and both of them were told by their father to work in the vineyard which is where grape plants grow now what did the first brother say after he was told to work did he say yes i will or i will not i will not but he soon realized that he should said that he was sorry and started to work now after the second brother was told to work he agreed but what did he do afterwards go out and work or not work not work it's important to mean what we say if we don't then we would be telling a lie which is a sin what shall we do after we sin we should ask for forgiveness right so we've learned from this story that it is important to mean what we say and if we do something wrong we should ask for forgiveness my name is stanley and i'll see you later goodbye [Music] i was just thinking as i was standing there i never introduced myself so i know i was here just two weeks ago and my name is father adam johetsky and i'm from our lady of guadalupe parish from lindelow and also part-time vocation director and it's great to be here a good friend of father paul monsignor dominic and father jamie so it's great to be here at st mary's and you know as we think about the christmas stories that we've heard especially the great story of the nativity we always remember how we hear the scripture tell us uh right after the birth of jesus the shepherds and all those who were in that area came to see our lord and how they entered into that stable they enter into that manger scene and there's mary just sitting there taking it all in and we say the scriptures tell us that she ponders all these things she keeps all these things close to her heart and i just always love that line of just how all those events had been going on and she still is able to remain that calm and remain that faithful knowing again that god was truly with her and that's just i think a beautiful thing to to think about especially during this christmas season and we know that christmas is a season not just one day but it's something that we get to celebrate uh for many days especially doing now during this octave but also afterwards that that christmas season is still with us and that spirit of christmas is something that never leaves and even though i love the christmas season i think i still love the advent season more than anything because it has this great intense anticipation where everything just seems to be building more and more and more until christmas day and then it kind of seems like everything just kind of halts or comes to a stop and all the preparation all the masses that we've had all that waiting of advent ceases to exist and we're allowed to focus truly on the nativity of our lord not just for that one day but for eight days in a whole season this is a great gift for us that keeps on giving as we know how important and special this is to our lives especially as we are sons and daughters of god in many ways we become like the blessed mother who we hear ponders these things that have happened and keeps them always close to her heart she has just been given such a great gift and it takes time to reflect on them as we come to the end of our year but the beginning of the christmas season we know we have a lot to ponder and to think about as well christ changed our world through his birth as god came to be with his own creation the blessed mother gave birth to him not giving him his divinity or his humanity but connecting us to him in the bond of our similar experiences as we celebrate this great solemnity of mary the mother of god we remember those humble beginnings of the holy family and how mary helped to bring god to our world today mary invites us to ponder that meaning of her child we remember the shepherds were amazed when they first heard the news but we are like mary no longer amazed but rather we are called to think about it to ponder about with mary our mother the implications of the coming of christ we're to think about the blessings that come with him peace joy forgiveness for all the treasure that is given to us to recognize that in this child born for us and who wishes to be born for us god has indeed smiled upon us our devotion to our blessed mother also teaches us many things teaches us the importance of faith the importance of family and how god calls each one of us to do amazing things he gives us these things to to bring the light of the world that is his son to those who are in darkness those who are struggling to find that hope we can let them know that there is something more to come and so the words of the blessing that we heard in our first reading from the book of numbers the blessing of the hebrews has also become our very own blessing as the lord keeps us and blesses us he lets his face shine upon us and is always gracious to us as the presence of his son is constantly in our hearts the lord does look upon us kindly the lord gives us peace and his son who came to give us all these treasures and these are the gifts that the child brings to us as we begin this new year we receive his blessing we receive this new life we receive the kindness and the promise of peace forever so today i pray that part of our new year's resolutions is to continue pondering with mary the great gift that christmas has brought us to ponder with mary and to rejoice always in the good news that god is truly with us in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen oh hi thanks for logging in i'm lisa caso and i'm hosting a series called celebrating lent we'll be looking into different aspects of the season such as sacrifice jesus passion before the resurrection and much more you can join one
