Hey how's it going get started here all right just sharing these two my age here you almost there you guys doing and just checking twitch make sure that's working over there strange doesn't look like twitch is working hey yes I want to do a baby Yoda hey how's it going inspire so this is a design made by my good friend Josh black um I had him kind of draw this thing up I wanted to do I've had this singer sitting around for quite a while and I've decided hey may the fourth let's do a special episode so all right how do you get the compass on the top right I think you mean top left this thing or this on the top right to show up if it disappears um restart ZBrush maybe or yeah I'm not quite sure hey it hasn't disappeared for me bazzill hey how's it going okay so let's go ahead and get started you his head and I apologize I'm recovering from kind of a sinus allergies and infection so I'm might be clearing my throat a lot I apologize you we're just going to kind of shape his head hey thanks Neil any advice on modeling a batwing was the modeler I would probably just use the topology brush and just draw it into the shape I want okay this is gonna take a lot of a lot of tweaking for sure a lot of subtle subtle nuances and this ear is a lot like the ear that I did the other day you you everybody turn local symmetry you I hope you guys are all doing well ei you funny they call this um instead of baby Yoda they call it the child when I say they I mean Disney it's everybody else calls it baby Yoda but it's it's just a yoda species it's not actually Yoda yeah Philippe I'm gonna be working on that mm-hmm but I'm just doing a special May the fourth episode today so that's why we're doing baby Yoda you special day may the 4th you I came back that's good to hear you need special brushes not really they I have all these brushes that you can download for free on my website at 3d character workshop comm but you don't necessarily need any of these they just help you but you can go get those ear over on itself a little bit we do need to name it nobody wants nobody wants to dare name it though go ballistic Oh too fast you oh and down my move intensity I didn't mean to do that feel that a 3d artist should also know how to draw it helps for sure um I but personally I used to draw all the time but I haven't I haven't drawn for a long time professionally or anything just I just tend to sculpt more than I draw but it's I don't I don't know yeah it's it helps for sure but it's not really necessary you you go you yeah Brian it's always a good exercise sure you you you - Patel when digital tutor started have a couple of I have a couple of videos or tutorials on digital tutors I think it's now plural site right and it's interesting to me that they are actually located here locally in Utah where I'm from but I have like oh I think five tutorials on there something like that what you put into continual education as much as I have time for yeah I'm always trying to learn new things for sure walk in this body just for fun here I'm actually gonna use a cylinder I usually don't this time I'm going to split this off um about your workshop do I always have access every time you update new content to it yes also I wanted to mention May first what was the three-year anniversary of the 3d character workshop I've been running that thing for three years now and I cannot believe it it's it's been incredible and I I now can proudly say I have over 1500 students which is crazy to me I had no idea it would it would end up the being what it is it's it's crazy three years and thank you so much thanks to everybody a lot of my students like to come watch me on these pixologic live streams so you're a student thank you so much ian's one meals one haha hey what's up lucky how you doing Lucky's 1 alright now I'm gonna try I'm gonna try the bend trick and bend this around trying to decide if I want to use the transpose tool or if I want to use like the bend arc or Bend curve in here let me see what this does here yeah inspires also um I just do it manually in in either ZBrush or somewhere else but usually ZBrush typically um festivai it was gonna do is I need symmetry on here and hit accept I'm gonna do the transpose way let's see yeah let's turn Transpo's on bend it you I always bugs me most of these tools disable symmetry yeah Neil has to remind me every single time right Neil hey what's up Mike yeah it's like an Amy hello my name is Mike and I - and let's do it that's funny oh come on I guess I can go back to being using the gizmo now that I'm done why is this still orange you you Andy I'm sorry to hear that I was in the same boat my friend I was you kind words thank you so much you you [Laughter] if I worked on immersive experience projects before are you talking about like VR I worked an AR for a little while you you see another another cylinder for his lower half no I have not we worked in AR you it's interesting you bring that up I was just watching the the Imagineer show on Disney Plus it's really good and they were talking about that ride you right using a lot of cylinders for this one you you is it mine nope this is Joshua black that's it's his his sketch Josh was he was a concept artist on Disney infinity with me from from the US in Utah I'm in Utah right now hello from Russia okay zmodeler then extrude a loop you pixologic no so I'm a volunteer for to stream on pixologic this is pics logics website pixologic makes ZBrush so this is ZBrush and this is what we're what we're demonstrating today yeah that's right here black and you know copyright Disney Lucasfilm I have to put that so the so the mouse doesn't come after me hopefully you you yes I do use Maya I use a lot actually haha yeah I'm sure they do so I worked for I worked for Disney Interactive for 10 years so they they do know where I live for sure you you you to happen you do I use my with travel as well not not really I usually use a mouse with Maya sometimes it depends on what I'm doing um I live over I can't I don't really do critiques during my livestream but if you want to send them to me if I have time I can check it out let's see Brian no it's my these are my custom brushes and I give them away for free if you want to go grab them over on 3d character workshop comm you can go get those I really need to put an image above my head you see if I can [Music] you second we fast boom before I forget there's my logo there you go yay all right okay you you okay let's go you blockout is quick sorry chat is super busy um yeah so Ryan I'm streaming to four different places mixer twitch YouTube and Facebook so this is the chat from all four of those so it kind of goes pretty quick Goodin excuse me oh all right I want a smaller than that you yeah I need to I have a have my water right here nah it's not Garonne corona it's allergies I have pretty bad allergies right now it is it is spring where I live do I have a stream deck next to me I do yep right here come on you yep I have been go with salt water but when I'm when I'm sitting here talking it just kind of takes over does what it wants and honey advice do I have to do you mean you Oh tutorials I do so yeah above above my head if you go over to the 3d character workshop I have a full intensive course online it's called the 3d character workshop you can go over there and check it out and yeah I was just talking about it's so on May first it was the three year anniversary of the 3d character workshop pretty crazy okay let's make these little fingers these little Yoda fingers can't believe I've been doing 3d character workshop for three years and it blows my mind because I was like I was thinking I would get a few hundred people in there maybe a hundred people maybe not even that much and it would just be a side time gig you know like part-time while I worked in the industry but it's it's kind of taken over my life which is great sorry class you're right you okay you hey what's up David where can I find my twitch I don't really stream on twitch other than on this pixologic site but you can follow me do you tend SIGGRAPH um I've only been once to SIGGRAPH and that was in 1995 art station yeah I have an art station actually Neil would you mind posting my art station link you you I'm just gonna kind of pose these fingers this is a 27 HD and yes I'll be emerging these fingers together you where can you grow so the appendage is it's part of my free brushes so if you go over to 3d character workshop you can grab them right there how to work on symmetry on a piece when it's not centered like I have a metal armored piece on the right leg I just work on it in the in the middle of the of the world do all your symmetrical stuff and then when you're all done just move it and then mirror it that's what I do you okay you - this finger a little better it's really hard yeah it took me took me a long time to get hired on at Disney more like eight years I think more than that that was me working in the industry at other other studios I worked at a studio that got purchased by Disney so it wasn't it wasn't like Disney directly or anything it was Disney Interactive you thanks so much you um have I used my half I've used my own a lot what's more complicated it's there they're both complex in their own ways I wouldn't say one is more complex than the other just a different way a different way of thinking about 3d because this is kind of sculpting whereas Maya is traditional modeling what's that from the soul of this hand for a second that looks like a crab or something you well I raise the core price of the core soon uh there I've been meaning to because I'm adding a whole bunch of more a whole bunch more content and I'm also upgrading the theme and the look and everything and bringing it into into 2020 with a you know with upgraded everything and once I do that I'm going to raise the price so that it's it's getting pretty close and I just added a brand new student forum and the forum is is coming along super nice I love it it's a lot like zebra central so it's kind of built on the same architecture let's see as a new user once you start becoming familiar with the concepts the programs are easier to wrap your head around absolutely the phone to make a sword and zmodeler my best cleanest option compared to drawing the forms on a plane and extracting them when it comes to when it comes to making props I will usually just do excuse me I will do traditional modeling but I'll do it inside of Z brush with the zmodeler brush sometimes it just depends on what it is sometimes I'll do the the topology brush and extract it like draw it that way it depends on what the shape is and you know what what the end result is gonna be so well existing students have to resize up no they'll just get it you okay to shape these a little better you bigger but that big you or you signed up at grad school that's okay it's it's a lifetime access so that's kind of the beauty of it just get get to it when you have time students get a certificate no unless you need one for tax reasons no portfolio review I I can so basically what I do is I do Q&A sessions every every two weeks and you can come and ask your questions in there and like I review characters and stuff like that which workflow is better ZBrush + 3d studio max + Photoshop er um you can use ZBrush with anything honestly it's it's up to you where you want to take it oh thanks Neil yeah I make the sword in that and that one that's the mouse right there and somebody asked if I printed these if I made these models and printed them out yeah these are all printed out on a form to printer for the most part except for this one this Boba Fett's that's on an envision tech and then this one was printed on a Pegasus so the rest of them are all printed on a form to kinda see him I'm gonna split this off actually and give it some more density split hidden you you you you want to know if there's a way in zbrush to move this sub tools with the gizmo giving precise numerical values the only values that you can type in are the ones and there it's not really precise exactly because it's based on ZBrush units that I know of anyway I hardly ever use them but under the deformation menu there's there's rotate size and offset these right here and you it's not like Maya where you can actually type in like physical values like meters it's it's not really that kind of a program it's more of an organic sculpting program so yeah not really is your answer merge this back down buying these together is there a way to paint multiple textures in ZBrush I'm only able to paint uh no just just poly paint or you can apply a texture so you can't do like there there's no support for like gloss or reflection or any of that kind of stuff it's just there there are materials and then there are there's the poly paint the color underneath and the materials are over here but they don't work like it's not like a material that you're used to in Maya with all those maps it's only really you can export Maps out of here but it's not really that kind of princess it's an organic sculpting program to begin with if you want to do texturing probably take it to like substance or something like that okay [Music] or stick these together so let's show the gizmo and remiss by union and then turn symmetry back on you know I see your question um let me see how can we join subtools without clothes hole for example join the ear to the head without closing the eye holes um so you can do you can do what I just did which is remesh my union I don't know that that closes the holes you can try it I I don't usually have open holes in my meshes but I'm gonna be stitching the ears to the head here shortly you can see but I won't have holes for the eyes try-try remesh by union see if that works for you okay so with these now I'm going to turn on sculptress Pro and just kind of do - it and I smooth it out a little bit a little bit sure no problem yeah gosh excuse me you how how do they merge the finger I use remesh by Union which is in the it's it's right here in the gear right there remesh by Union you you you okay I need you turn this off here sure let's see okay that's pretty good or beginner in 3d I plan to do animation any advice still confused to choose Maya ZBrush right after effects those are those are three like completely different pieces of software that do different things so After Effects is like special effects right so like explosions and things like that ZBrush is organic sculpting and Maya is like you know like if you're making environments and characters and rigging and animation all that kind of stuff so it completely depends you okay tweak this a little bit I got this finger too big you you I want to turn what sorry sorry if I coughed in your ear all right to turn off the so with pinch I like to turn sculptress off of that brush I need to save it that way but if you go down here turn off turn off enable now when the pinch brush won't work with scope this Pro any longer which is good what I want I'll just pinch it nervous I'll be way behind you're evolving methods hope that makes sense uh no you you you just start sculpting that's um it's everybody's on their own path right everybody has to start somewhere I'm not you're not getting left behind because you still have to block out your character and well you don't have to but that's that's the method and that hasn't really changed the only thing that's really changed is how how I polish in detail a little bit you you snake her brush you insert button to change poo know what you're asking there you can't change the pivot point in ZBrush you can move it manually in well yeah I'm not I'm not really talking about Maya too much because this is ZBrush is or this is pixologic zbrush channel so I like to keep the focus on that on ZBrush if I can sorry about that you you there any realistic fur making tutorials in ZBrush training software no because all of my stuff is stylized characters I don't really do realistic stuff so all of mine is like sculpted fur sculpted hair a kind of stuff you we won't see this because it's going to be up the sleeve but in there you you use the eggs loop too much no not really unless I'm doing hard surface sculpting thing I use the most is move the move brush okay you good I need to work on him more you a bit cornmeal all these fingers up kind of looks like a Talon or something nice talents baby Oda a child call him the child the 19 what age did you start to do character modeling um they have strobe tones I started when I was 28 28 think somewhere around there but back then it wasn't what it is today it's not even close you sorry I'm spending all this time on these hands what's the benefit of using sculptress um you don't run out of geometry that's the main thing you you your techniques evolved since the cartoon scientists um I would say a good 80% has changed from when I did that one zbrush around when you first started oh no nope not even close no I'm old guy so I used this will this will date me but I started on 3d studio version three on Dass so that's my first 3d program it was like not even on windows it was on Doss and I did not see your character about textures let's see fair way to combine two different UV zin one or create different textures on two phases no you can't do that just one yep how do I get the real-time silhouette it just comes with ZBrush 2020 and above right here that down that makes me very old dear yeah that's before alias yeah that's wavefront right alias wavefront all right let's get let's get to the face it some eyeballs in him and get some edge edge work done on his head excuse me for a second all right I gotta set my drink down really soft where else it makes my microphones boom Rey dreams studio hahaha I remember a dream studio and true space you remember true space and Bryce and nando are using endo a lot and what was the what was the animation master that was a good one ancient yep Calabrese face yeah you know it damn brice 3d yeah it's like make make landscape button so strata now strata strata was in it was developed here in Utah in southern Utah and they made missed with strata that was on that was one of the only 3d programs on a Mac at the time crazy right they're gonna have inch floppies oh my goodness back in my day that's funny oh I don't want to crease this Lightwave yep Lightwave still around believe it or not insert you you bring this in a little bit you still have them oh goodness Bryce is still around I've never used a moppy whatever that is I have not used that one there's a model are called wings that I used and silo silo still around I love silo it was good still is good clear you you you um sculpt after the rete apology is better or before making low-poly start them out it's better after you wings came from oh it did is that the evolution Oh Mari it was called Mari right ma are I and my friend BAE rate did the model for it on the cover and Rhino yah Rhino was good that was a nurbs modeler you you um I mainly just teach I do the occasional freelance job but hard Mirai is that what I said Ken Mir what did I say I said something else Mirai yeah hold it you're totally right Mirai I don't even know if I'm saying it right you I think I think I was getting it confused with Mauri which is yeah Mirai yes Mirai not so not to be confused with Mari Mari is the texturing software so yeah an endo is the child of Mirai crazy nice Avatar Jimmy I like that all right old software remember when ZBrush was first I played with ZBrush in beta when it first first came out a long long time ago and back then it was just kind of a hobbyist little fun fun tool because that was still when it was like an illustration program it was meant to be it's like an illustration program with 3d elements two and a half d kind of thing all those hands are horrible gosh-dang hands oh it does means future that's interesting mouse with pressure sensitivity not I've never heard of such a thing try a I'm gonna zremesh this this hand it's driving me crazy it's like this weird claw thing I gotta fix it I must save this to the child okay Zeke as zremesh this bad boy try one hey how's it going I'm Mike yeah no kidding I still have so I made a I made a Princess Leia with my first try and it just it turned out not so good I'll have to dig it up I think I still have it somewhere okay let's fix this now look like talons in actual hand maybe you he's hiding with it oh yeah I say I played with that at gentle giant had one was like a HAP nah I don't want to say haptic it wasn't a haptic it was like yeah force feedback it was like a pen on an arm and it was the arm was attached to this ball that kind of sat on your on your computer and it would actually like yeah would it would pull back on the pen when you touched the surface of whatever you were sculpting was really crazy you Yoda you maybe if I mask these off and turn them it would help you you you right I do we top in a different software does the course approach 3d printing and optimizing characters for video games yes it does both of those things it does it does you X Eclipse you you kind of turn them backwards maybe like this it's a little bit to the back that's better all right all right all right I'm not hating them as much I still hate him but not as much okay there we go I can live with that all right how'd you get the silhouette in the top corner it comes with ZBrush 2020 and newer okay let's but some eyeballs in his face we reset this you you perfect ship it you you you a side-effects has gone you you ceramic flooring you that doesn't sound like fun ha eris redeco could be fun could be therapeutic right somebody told me therapeutic is another name for another term for boring I think I got his ears too long you coming lengthwise let's do that local symmetry come on you can do it there we go you okay I'm going to subdivide this once delete the lower and then sculptress Pro you why you you you strange I don't know why sculptors Pro is turned off of my smooth brush that's really weird I Wyatt got turned off I got a I got a look at that okay maybe I turned it off all right orco from he-man I love Orko you something really quick and that is I'm just gonna kind of you for sculptress ready and stitch it together you yes right how you doing man yeah house right you go you you situation where you plan to distort eyes via rigging how do you handle the sculpting do you sculpt two versions one with the shaped eyeballs for design and one with round eyes for rigging or keep the ID formations on a more flair there are so many different ways to do eyeballs it depends on the rig and the the project that you're working on and how they're gonna rig it I have done round eyeballs where they have rigged it so they can squash and stretch and do all the fun things and then I've also made eyes that are permanently stretched and then the iris kind of rolls around on the surface of it yeah it's just it depends on the whole project in it it but for sculpting I will usually stretch the eye out so I can get the look of the character first and then you can build it any way you want after that and kind of fit it and match it to that character topological boxmeer two round brush this right here that what you're asking me my insert multi mesh primitives brush that's what you're asking about this is the one that I use to insert my primitive objects brought this one this is my hard paintbrush and this is my soft paintbrush these do poly paint yeah use eyes from macro append eyes now you I just inserted them they're just fierce you you you Hey yes Josh's yep did this for me you we already have this glow the I to do they're just skin shade for sheeter that's what you're wondering this is the brush I wanted to turn sculptors Pro off of you hey how's it going you you put a light little Edie in there his mouth ask it off whoops you or you got Peter Pan nice that is a piece that Jason Kim and I worked on mostly Jason he designed it posed it I have that guy he's over there somewhere in a box is it in the box or just by itself the figure you Thanks you macro macros append eyes sorry side-effects I don't know you're trying to tell me here with that I used insert multi mesh for these eyes is that what you're saying but I didn't use any macros or anything you you oh I see okay you or lighting I'll probably render it somewhere else probably keyShot or something like that you you you you looks pretty cute with his little mouth like that huh I think [Music] you okay for this I want to get a little later with detail you you so this this interface is well this user interface is my custom user interface so if you want that you can find it over on 3d character workshop comm you want to download it and use it these are my colors and my layout essentially you you this is gonna take some polish for sure oh come on brush size change you you all right I'm getting quiet I'm just kind of concentrating here for a minute you you every time sit down to zbrush you don't know what to make and then turn it off because feel overwhelmed with block I use iPad pro it works great with duet display it does I've tried that actually and it works I like it a lot it's like a miniature Cintiq right it's pretty good ah I'll think Sayid I still need to I need to refine it but it's getting there getting there getting there you reminds me my grandson yes I have a grandson I'm old okay let's you you you you you you you I saw Ronald McDonald for once oh that sounds interesting yeah those are good points Giovanni good points you also just in general my my good friend Alan always said if if you don't want to do something at least do it for five minutes usually like nine times out of ten you'll you'll pick it up and keep going with it and that includes anything you don't want to do and the like chores or whatever you know I'm just like or writing a book or whatever you want to do but you just can't like start starting is the hardest part so it's always it's always good to just try and get started at least give yourself 5-10 minutes of trying it before you give up so much I'm still still trying to edit it without destroying the cuteness factor you just want to edit this I shape just a little bit more hopper you you you I'm gonna try and sneak a little bit of an eyelid on here you I'm gonna smooth this part down a lot you you have you got 1:13 1:13 why anyway you all right you you okay I kind of want to scrunch his features a little closer to his eyeballs and then maybe I want to get that his eyes kind of turned up a little bit I kind of looking droopy I'm just going to do that with the eye opening itself you little bit of a cheek you you there we go squash features are always cuter you stinking cute you all right I'm gonna fill his eyes with toy plastic maybe let's see try this zebra I reflect maybe maybe or this toy plastic maybe that just fill it with that um fill go back to skin shade for there we go you a candy it's a little bit different I've been using I've been experimenting with sculptress Pro which is just dynamic topology essentially you here we go you you all right I'm gonna put arms down kind of pose them just a little bit pull his chin down more like how his shins longer there we go so stinkin cute I'll get him I do like sculptress yep because you you don't run out of topology you Cupid dangerous is not the truth depending on whose side you're on or whose side he's on how do you know when you're done I feel like that's the hardest part ah that's a good question that's a good question usually it's a is the worst answer usually it's when the art director or the company you're doing it for says okay I need you to deliver this by this date and then you got a deliver that's usually and that's a good thing a good thing usually you're just like no here here it is but when you're doing personal work that becomes a little trickier cuz then you just like as it done is it done because there's always something to tweak on it right and it's particularly difficult I mean not not to toot my own horn or anything but to it's when you're trying to make a character in like two hours right or four hours to a couple a couple streaming sessions and I'm just like okay what can I get done or at least sort of done in that amount of time so that becomes particularly interesting to do you you okay see see how the silhouette is kind of scooping in right at that peak I can use the fill brush to just kind of fill that in keep looking at it from the side yeah ed you have I totally you yeah my office space yeah we're going to need you to come in this weekend so cute of a twist in his ear more to thank you let go OOP that ear swoop it what has been your most challenging project um what you know what where I learned the most um well that's two that's two different questions um I think I learned the most what I learned the most so the most challenging was Anakin so I did Anakin for Disney infinity and to get his likeness was extremely difficult I just struggled with that thing forever and ever and ever and finally and finally got it close enough that it worked out and then also there's you know the the Mickey Mouse I worked on Mickey Mouse the the Fantasia version of it and that one was quite challenging because it was under such scrutiny whoa geez Louise what are you doing inch brush you because Disney actually had a was like a trio of ladies that kind of there were the the license keepers of Mickey and they showed up and they had to approve what he was looking like so they sent three ladies from from from Disney corporate to come and make sure that we were doing and Fantasia version of Mickey justice so that was it that was a fun time or he worked on as a tester oh nice the DS version did we there was a DS version even though there was a DS version sorry you yeah I love this angle right here this little mouth that little overbite well I I wouldn't know because I didn't I didn't work on the DS version at all so apologize for that not knowing there were so many different versions and so much stuff going on thank you very much yeah the character design was it was very very much a team effort working with those guys a lot that was a really great team pants 3d CG is less developed you wouldn't think so that's kind of surprising because of how much animation anime and stuff comes out of there because yeah I consider some of their animation the best in the world do you think there'd be more CG coming out of there was this always your style well you know I picked up a lot from working on Disney infinity I I was always into stylized characters um thought to pull up some of my old stuff sometime and show you guys but I was never into stylized characters as much as I did when I got into Disney infinity um this it really really helped me and I learned so much during my time there um you know just just different I think I learned the most from our art director his name is John D está and he taught me so much he went to he went to Cal arts and he just has these artistic tendencies that I really really like and I learned a lot from so John if you're listening shout out to your brother hey what's up Mike thanks man how you been you like did you ever work with John D esta you did right you maybe not maybe that was past your time it's a fun atom stuff and downtime rad I think that was I think you met him he was roommates with Alan for a while so that's why I thought you might have you isn't this guy stinking cute stinking cute my gosh you little thing in his a year yeah everybody Allen's like the town tricycle so Alan is uh he's a really good friend of both Mike and I sigh I worked with Mike for a while back in the day and Alan is now one of the lead designers at Avalanche which is the company you that I worked at when I worked at Disney infinity and he's working on one of their projects right now I think he's the the lead designer on it anyway Ellen's awesome love that guy you alright I'm gonna put his hands down start to butt to pose it yeah he's back no one's back you you it really did yeah so you guys if you look up if you look up blur Studios Jabberwocky that is a that is a title that we were working on when Disney first purchased Avalanche Studios I was the lead character artist on it Alan was the lead designer and yeah it was it was amazing you see see if I can pull up a picture of it yeah check this out look at this I wish I could blow these pictures up but I guess I could go fullscreen for a minute let's fast-forward it they are really really great stuff anyway go check that out on Vimeo blur studio Jabberwocky you yeah blur studio did that trailer but we were working on the game for it good stuff okay bleating these hands you let's see you was really cool that was um yeah that was before like How to Train Your Dragon it was it was a very similar kind of a storyline where men and monsters kind of befriended each other and they were also fighting each other and one of the kids from the the men you know the human tribe and one of the monsters from the monster tribe they become friends and you kind of got to work your way through the game that way and yeah there's a good there's been a few games like that sense but back in the day was pretty innovative at the time okay let's see you you that's better his shoulders his shoulders are way up in there and they you even cuter can he get cuter don't think so you I make this duplicate it and just try something with this you you [Music] can you join tutor from subtools and keep the group's yeah it'll key it should keep poly groups you no belly he's got a belly there somewhere okay I'm gonna make this I haven't really scoped it on his body yet it's just a placeholder you you and Mike have you messed with sculptris Pro much yet I've been loving it make a sculpting base something like this you how long did it take you to get your skill level where you felt comfortable with your skills um well with ZBrush it took me I would say a good six months before I actually felt good sculpting but I already had experience doing 3d modeling before that so I wasn't starting from scratch in knowing 3d modeling beforehand can it can it can be good and bad bad because you're expecting the program to behave in a certain way and it doesn't it just kind of makes you frustrated it was gonna be on several consoles but it never launched so I don't like that haha now I want to bring go why would you say that you got to take off all right Neil thank you so much man appreciate it appreciate all the links and all the help and all that everything I'll try with the cloth brush and see if I can get excuse me goodness you you maybe a crease what I need you the keys and also the one of the big things that I wasn't used to was the trackball navigation and NIT and now I now I love it I love trackball because I can spin in anywhere I want to and now I wish that other programs like Maya would have it so embrace the trackball get used to it I need to switch to thing I can see what I'm doing you are you talking about Jabberwocky yeah so good I was we were all we're all pretty sad when it got canned you you you you you just go be fields dude conman I'm doing a special mate may the fourth episode check it out here let me let me get we get so you can see this how you been man we're getting all the people hanging out here we go check it out [Laughter] thanks dude you yeah we should should we should and if you you guys if you don't know who Justin go be fields is you should he he he runs 10k over on Facebook ten thousand hours and he's also an amazing artist does some crazy cool stuff haven't ya so I'm giving you a shout-out Justin really really cool stuff does the real stuff I just do the stylized stuff you this guy's turned out to be pretty pretty fun man you always just and I hope they're gonna do a zebra summit this year I don't know if they will yeah Justin this is like me I used to work with him back in the day really good friends Dustin if you ever want something to scope check out Mike's work I think just Justin being one of the only people that could do it justice you're saying just saying your workshop do you teach about preparing a character for rigging for animation um I teach about how to do the topology that's suitable for deformation and rigging yes but I don't like specifically say start you know talk about how to rig any character but I talk about how to prep it for rigging for sure you you you I actually have a mic have you ever seen my Yoda I don't think Justin has either you science cult project from pretty good to cool-looking awesome art you make something it looks pretty good acceptable but you know the work could be pushed way further it's honestly Jimmy I wish I had an answer but it's all from experienced experience and feedback getting feedback from people that are better than you that can can kind of show you the show you the way kind of show you what what it's missing and how to make it better then you learn from that and your own experience and then you can inject that into your own designs that kind of stuff so okay hold on a second you you [Music] so this is my Yoda there you go he's gonna be sculpting see you guys later you know to sculpting Yoda that's a good shot because the ears falling apart you you I thought you would Justin might some people call him mo moldy Yoda cuz as he's old he's kind of falling apart he's a collectable series made of what he's made of silicone so it's the silicone is breaking down but and his eyes are kind of kind of wall-eyed a little bit Moli Yoda at times Leland you showed up the right time Yoda sculpting Yoda alright I'm gonna open this hand up and kind of pull it in yeah almost Yoda it's like the off-brand Yoda oh my god you hey hey craziness ensues Oh it's had to hear about lightbox Justin I was wanting to go to that again this year but kind of par for the course better that everybody's safe instead hopefully they'll kind of do something online that sounds like they might breaking his fingers I'm gonna fix him here in a minute you due to the stream hello and welcome your daughter was Oh awesome man I haven't seen her since she was little little Bethany and my my oldest son just turned 23 yesterday how old is Bethenny now she's rocking I've seen a few pieces that you've shared on your Facebook holy cow 26 dang you I'll check it out Mike that's awesome whoops I think I sculptress this up and I didn't want to nor sculptress want to smooth it there we go hands weird like a claw a claw well we fix it after the stream or something I don't know as I could noodle on this forever 260 people watching today thank you everybody for hanging out with me appreciate it means a lot you thanks so much you I say I'm not gonna sit and work on the hand then I'm just working on the hand that's how it goes you without asking for feedback and one improve are there any rules thick to thin curved to straight yeah there's all sorts of rules like that visual development what I'm asking about is called design where to search for progress so Jimmy I have I mean I all this stuff online on the 3d character workshop and module 2 is all about character design what to look for what the concept artists have put into their own design so you can look for it and hopefully replicate it in the 3d design when you when you do that and of course that that's all part of learning and you know figuring that stuff out but yeah when you when you don't have somebody to you should you should find a place where you can submit your work and get some feedback like on well not so much art station but like polycount and enter some contests like art station contests and things like that and hopefully get some feedback that way there's there's places like CTN where you can take your portfolio and get get some feedback there it just depends on what you're looking for do you show rendering usually not during the live streams I think I'm asking how to develop appeal and designs yeah honestly it does it comes from experience and time and a good eye a good gut feeling you know and looking at other people's work and trying to sort of emulate it you know and develop your style and that kind of stuff and usually what you try to do is find concepts that you're passionate about like this one and try and match it as best as possible and if you can't then you have to kind of digest it and figure out maybe why it's not hitting it why it doesn't look the way you were wanting it to look and just experiment and try stuff and a lot of times you'll just miss things just blatantly miss things that you wouldn't see before and it's just like growing your artistic eye as you as you work you back like he's walking give him a chin I don't know if I'm gonna get I might give him a little he's got a chin right there you you yep you're welcome good luck on your artistic journey it's a it's a fun one for sure add more resolution to this wound you you more you yeah yeah your own critic you're your own worst critic it's like and when can I be done when when can I stop when should I stop yeah they're all just kind of you learn as you go and also just yeah if you can just find a try and find a forum a place where you can post your work there is the ten thousand hours on on Facebook where you can post stuff and sometimes you'll get good feedback there and with begin with a 3d character workshop I have a forum I can show it to you you can see a preview of what it looks like it's built on the same foundation as ZBrush central check this out so this is the 3d character workshop forum I have a top row just like ZBrush central does and there's a bunch of the the student work yep so see they're getting feedback right here draw overs and video feedback and all sorts of stuff so it's really cool super cool I can't be more happy with with the student forum that that we've put together sup Rob Rob's a plant stop spamming words and phrases bamming words and phrases it looks isn't that the first time you something that's funny you just gonna raise his arm up a little bit I think I'm gonna have to take it to pose turn his head and almost done I'm going to say this is three because I'm going to take it out of symmetry now careful don't say it again you're gonna get banned by the bot the bot will go like stop spamming ooh that's funny okay let's take him to pose gonna be brown let's make him gray you okay you you you hey everybody's gonna get into it you you what is the one thing you were learning during this quarantine time for me it's sculpting a character it's a great way yeah it's a great great time to polish up some skills some something that you've been wanting to learn for a long time I really should I want to want to practice my guitar a little bit more you maybe pull this back a little bit I've been learning some in blender what else what else and I oh I've been doing uh something you guys might want to experiment with is I've been doing some live boolean stuff with eyeballs that's really cool you you yeah we should do a jam session Shawn it's not a bad idea about right like that you you so cute all right you don't miss like a 80s sitcom the nightbot do you have any tips on working with one concept that only shows one angle um the tip is I I advise it so I advise not working with turns and I've kind of talked about this before where if you ask a concept artist to draw front and side views of the character it will actually you kind of lose some of the life and character that's in that character so I prefer to design or model from a three-quarter view like this and maybe a three-quarter view from the back that way I can see everything and breathe the life into the character that's there as well so that's my recommendation how did I get into this um I got into this a long time ago I've been doing it for 22 years character animation modeling rigging so I've been I've been doing it for a long time I went to school at the Art Institute of Seattle a long time ago to learn some of the animation part of it sorry just a little bit more smile let's put some all right and we got five five minutes left in I don't think I'm gonna put this little thing maybe I will we got five minutes I can put that on there really quick why not let's do a snap strapped curve snap strap I like to say that curve straps snap slap you're going to the Art Institute oh man I'm not gonna I'm not gonna talk about the artist - there's a reason they're closing down that's all I'll say good it was a good experience for me people there all right oh sorry no I you asked that question I need to answer it do you think it's better to have a mix portfolio a hard surface creature stylized or specialized one to get hired I recommend it being based on what you want to do with your career so that the whole reason of for a portfolio is to get work and if you want to do a specific thing in your career you should fill your portfolio with that specific thing and get really really good at it if you can it doesn't hurt you to put that other kind of stuff in there but typically it's best if you can if you can specialize if you can another thing you can do if you're trying to get hired on at an indie an independent studio they wear more hats they are more jack-of-all-trades and they hire one person to do many many things so if that's the kind of work you want to do then by all means put more stuff in your portfolio but it depends if you want to work on at a big studio like Disney or something like that it's better to be specialized and say this is what I do I'm known for stylized characters you know I just I chose to do stylized characters and then try and do them as best as I can looks like I made too strap snaps here do Auto groups and delete one of these guys the wheat and then mirror and weld you an X in the middle that's weird we can fix that with zmodeler stitch delete this edge see you you you yeah there's there's this weird misconception about portfolios as far as like what they are you know a portfolio is literally you're showing the studio that you're capable of doing the work that's all a portfolio is they have a project typically they'll have a project and they they have work for that project that needs to get done say we need X amount of characters to be modeled okay we only have let's say one modeler we and we have this amount of time well we need to hire another modeler so we can get these done right and it depends on the company if it's a new company and they're just they don't have much budget and they're trying to get started then they'll most likely hire somebody who is new who doesn't have much experience but if it's a company like you know Disney or something like that or a naughty dog big a big studio they're gonna go okay this is what budget we have this is how much time we have this how many characters we need to get done we need to go find someone first there will ask the character modelers in-house if they know anyone that's the first step okay if they know anyone they're gonna recommend their friends or you know people they know from school or whatever and then they'll they'll see look at them first and then next they'll reach out to like places like art station and polycount and things like that and then they will look at those portfolios on art station ago okay this is the project that we have let's look at these poor these characters on art station and see what if what characters match our project clothes and then we'll see how much experience this person has if they are local if they're international all those factors go into play right but the portfolio is pretty much there to say hey I can do this work here I'll show you that kind of stuff having multiple portfolios for different apartments sure yeah because if you're an animator you're gonna want an animation reel like a movie to show people that you know how to make characters move but for a character modeler you don't need a reel because they're not moving they're just sitting there so the best place to display those is on art station okay there we go okay now we have our little middle thing cool cute little Yoda alright guys I think I'm gonna wrap it up I hit it right at two hours a little baby Yoda in two hours fun fun fun well thank you everybody for hanging out with me today it's been really great may the fourth so may the fourth be with you and yeah I hope you enjoyed this I had a really good time with the session I could I could tweak it more I can see some cheek stuff that I could fix and but yeah not not too bad for two hours I think um anyway yeah we'll see you next Monday if you're interested in learning this stuff I have an online course it's called the 3d character workshop and it's open right now you can go check it out like I just showed earlier I have a brand new forum for the students and I'm coming up with a brand new theme and more lessons really soon and um what else what else and I give away my interface and all these brushes so if you're interested in these brushes and this user interface you can go grab them at 3d character workshop comm they're right on the front page and yep you're are welcome and thanks for hanging out we got almost 300 people watching today which is crazy crazy crazy alright guys be safe happy sculpting and we'll see you all next Monday alright Cheers
