if you've made a three yard quilt then you know the joys and the simplicity of making them but have you ever gotten to a fabric and you thought now which pattern am i going to put this in well today we're going to talk about the many facets of three yard quilts keep watching [Music] hi it's donna robertson with fabric cafe today we're going to talk about the many facets of three yard quilts now whenever you're working with a three yard quilt you just need three one yard cuts of fabric and we have many patterns we have ten books and we have over a hundred individual patterns for you to choose from so we're going to show you some quilts today and we're going to start off with the modern charm quilt and then we're going to show you how easy it is to pick different patterns and see what they look like with the fabrics so this is our first one it's modern charm this is from my book quick as a wink it's been a very popular pattern it's sort of like a a little updated version of an old-fashioned design with the churn dash here so we're going to show off the beautiful roses in the big block and then we're going to create this particular motif and we're going to look at these fabrics up close so let's look at these this fabric is just stunning when i first made this quilt i had so many people just drooling over the fabric and it took a couple of months for the fabric to come in but whenever it got here it was just as popular as we expected it to be when you're working with a three yard quilt you'll always choose which fabric you want to go in what spot and this particular one is what we call the focus fabric it will go in the number one position of your quilt now let's look at this pattern and i'll show you what i mean every pattern gives you a black and white diagram like this and it'll have a fabric selection guide now the fabric selection guide has a polka dot for the number one or the focus fabric it has a white box for the lightest of these two and that's your number two and then your darkest is your number three now if i turn over here and show you another one it's going to be the same way your focus fabric is in the number one the lightest of the next two is in the number two position and then your number three is your darkest i designed the pattern so that's real easy for you to pick out which fabric goes where so this is your focus you take it out of the equation it's the number one fabric you have two fabrics remaining you pick the lightest for the number two and the darkest for the number three and it works the lightest becomes your background for any design element that i want to feature in the quilt so that's how simple and easy it is so we have here kit number 8020258 modern charm modern charm is only available in the book quick as a wink but what if you wanted to make it in a different pattern how would it look would this look just as good if you picked a different fabric or a different pattern and you used that position one position two in position three let's find out so the next one that i want to talk to you about this pattern is very very popular we this particular fabric is a 10 inch in a 10 inch block really shows off your fabric here and it looks great in there it's a really happy uh fabric it has a four patch here but what would it look like if we used the same fabric from the roman holiday i mean i'm sorry the modern charm okay so let's put that up here and then we're going to build this using yet a different pattern and we have the big 10 inch block that's going to go right here in this section and you're going to make a strip piece like this so you sew long pieces together and then we're going to cut units off of this like this so we have this unit and here's the second unit here now i'm going to build it over here and then i'm going to build it over here so you can really see how this looks so taking the same fabric and putting it in a different quilt this is the kind of look that you're going to get so we're going to put this here and we're going to give you one more block right over here so that kind of gives you a little idea of how different it's going to look when you get this romantic fabric but what i'm going to do now is move it over here so that you can see without the busyness of this particular one here is what your quilt is going to look like isn't that gorgeous so that's how it would look if you were using this particular pattern so if you buy this fabric you could make the roman no if you buy this particular pattern then you can make the modern charm quilt or you might decide that you would rather make it with the quick so quick but what if you wanted a third option so we have yet one more quilt that we want to share with you this particular one is called picture perfect it would be great for you to use the same fabric in and what a difference it's going to be using the same exact fabric and a different pattern so let's put that one over here and show you what this one would look like okay we're going to put our board over here so we can do that now picture perfect is um here's your pattern you do have your same fabric number one fabric number two and fabric number three you're going to make that strip piece you're going to cut units etc so you start off with a big block we'll put that over here then you make a large strip piece that looks like this so this one is going to be sewn with little pieces on each side then you cut your units off of the side just like this and this is the beginning of your second block so we'll put this one down here so you can see how that looks the next thing that you're going to do is you're going to sew long pieces on the side of this block and there is building the picture perfect with again the same exact fabric let's move it over here so you can see it on the white so that really i'm going to have to do it this way though so give me one second to build this and put this here and that gives you a good idea of how beautiful this quilt would be made with picture perfect so was that fun wouldn't you like to see more well keep watching i'll show you another set of fabric in three different ways so another quilt that i absolutely adore is roman holiday this is one of my favorites i love this quilt and i'd like to show you the fabric and then show you two other patterns that it would look really cool in so we'll put this one up here and we'll look at the fabric first now just like we did before we're talking about the fact that you've got a black and white diagram the black and white diagram has a polka dot a white and a black your polka dot is your fabric number one or your focus fabric you'll have two remaining you compare them and you pick your lightest for number two your darkest for number three so if we do that in real life i chose this is for my fabric number one i take it out of the equation i compare these two and i get fabric number two and fabric number three so if you look over here we've got our focus here and the the biggest block the lightest becomes your background so you can really see the design elements that are created by fabric one and fabric three so this particular kit is called roman holiday it's eight zero two zero five zero five now roman holiday is only available in the book quick as a wink this book but if you wanted to make it in a different pattern what would it look like well let's look at a couple and see how it would look if you made that up in a different pattern this one is called flying geese it's a lot of fun has a lot of movement i'm sorry this is dancing geese they are dancing back and forth i think they're doing a square dance so this one is a little bit different we have the big bold uh print out here on the edge and then we have our flying geese here in the middle let's put that one up here and we'll look at some pieces and parts so you saw the fabric and in this particular case your fabric number one is actually in the pattern it shows you your black and white diagram and it has your polka dot your light and your dark so we are going to make it with our fabric one which is the big black and white and your number two which is the light so these two are going to be made and it's going to be a little bit different than what i did here so now let's put them on the quilt so you can see what it looks like so we'll just move these parts over here like so and that makes one of your geese and then you'll move the others over so you can see those there as well then your border strip is a big wide border so it's going to be the red now this is going to be a stunning quilt now let's put it back over here on the white so that it really shows up with a pop so we're going to have our border and we're going to bring these pieces over and show you what your geese are going to look like when they're dancing across the surface of this particular quilt isn't that cool now this one is the dancing geese it is available as an individual pattern it's also available in the book quilt favorites now the next one that we're going to show you is corner play corner play is uh it's just a great quilt it's been so popular and it has your three fabrics just like all of the other you have your focus fabric you have your light being the background so that it really makes your design pop and then you have your black as one of the accents in this particular one so let's see how that looks in the quilt first step for corner play is you'll make a strip piece like this you'll put fabric one and fabric three together and sew long strips that will be cut into a unit like this now we trimmed off the seam allowances so that they won't have to overlap over here we're going to turn that piece and put it right here in this block and we're making this block right here then we're going to sew an extra piece on the side of the quilt right here and then we're going to put a fabric number one here and we're going to put another fabric one right down here now because this is getting a little bit busy i'm going to transfer it back to the white board so that you can see it as well now we have another one that's already made up it's going to go here you build it exactly like this then you put it right over here and then we're going to build one like this and like this so i can block that out for you so that you can see what it looks like let's put these nice big white boards here i guess i can put that up here and then let me get my cropping tool we'll put it right down here and there so now you can see how cool this quilt is going to be once again with the same exact fabric it works up so nicely in any one of the patterns so that's another fun way for you to look at how the same fabric looks in three different quilts so let's check out another set of fabrics and three quilts now it'll be a lot of fun to see how we take the fabric from this quilt heartland and put it in three different quilts it's a very subtle fabric and you're going to get a lot of contrast whenever you put it together and it's going to look great in three different quilts and we've got pieces and parts to show you so let's put heartland up on the table and in our usual fashion we're going to pick out our focus fabric is your number one and you can see how i've utilized the focus fabric here by putting it in the center and the border i like the bigger prints to be in the border sometimes so i did that with your focus fabric and then you pick out your number two fabric now this is a little lighter fabric we ran out of that one but we found this one and i love it just really coordinates well with the little um the little pattern that's in the design so this is going to be our light fabric that goes back here that causes your design to pop which is made with your number three fabric and we also use it on this section so this particular one is called jamestown two eight zero two zero six five one heartland is your pattern and that is also available in the book pretty darn quick so you can get it either as an individual pattern or in this book now let's see how this same fabric looks in a different kit this particular quilt is called puzzle me this and it would really look cool in this particular fabric so we've made pieces and parts for you so you can see how it looks so we have we'll take this fabric away first of all you're going to need to make strip pieces like this the strip pieces look like this you've got your number two fabric with a border of strips on either side that is going to be how you come up with this unit so i'm going to just show you that unit right there then we sew pieces on each side and that's how you get this section of your quilt so we're going to put that right here on that block then we're going to put an additional one can i put that one right down here john okay so we've trimmed the seam allowances off of these and then you make another strip piece that looks like this now when you strip piece this one you're not making a partial or a unit you're actually making the actual block so when you trim cut this off and trim it you will be with this particular block like so and we have another one right here now let's crop that so you can see it and how it's all put together and so now you're going to have puzzle me this made with this particular fabric that's great i like that now let's look at one more here and the next one that we're going to show you is called what are we doing we're doing stepping stones okay stepping stones is um another pattern that's been very popular and pinned thousands and thousands of times it has this great marching blocks that are different sizes and then it has the focus block here so we'll put that up here and let's see how it looks whenever you make it up in the fabrics so first of all you just have a block and so this is cut and you'll put it right here and then you make your strip piecing now the first strip next excuse me is going to have a wide piece for the number three with the light sewn on either side and you will put you're going to cut those off and make them units the unit is going to go right here in the center and that makes your big block then you sew another strip piece like so and when you sew this one with your number two and three and you cut your units off of the side like so you put one of these like this and you put the other one you turn it and it goes right there now we did create one more of these to go on the side so you could see what that looks like now let's transfer it over here to your board so you can see these together so you can see how it creates these little blocks by putting those strip pieced pieces over on the side so this one would be the way it looks if you made it in the stepping stones so it's a fun way to see your patterns differently is to realize that any three yards will work with any of my patterns you just pick your number one your number two and your number three so i hope you enjoyed today's show and be sure to subscribe by clicking on the button below and you can also hit the bell and that will
