The Power of 3! - Easy Does It Book Review

do you ever wonder why three yard quilts have become so popular it's because that's just the way your brain works it's the power of three keep watching i'll tell you a little more hi it's donna robertson with fabric cafe today we're going to talk about the power of three it's just the way your brain works because you go to school and you learn your abcs and then you say things are as easy as one two three it's actually been studies done that shows you that your mind works well whenever you keep it very simple in a one two three mode so with three yard quilts you have a focus fabric you have a light and a dark and you can create a quilt it's easy to pick your fabrics it's easy to put them together and with my books it's easy to make them larger because i give you three different sizes a lab quilt which is approximately 45 by 60 then you can make a twin with six yards and a king queen with 12 yards so let's look at some quilts and we're going to make it easy does it for you today our book that we're basing this whole show on so this particular quilt was inspired by the roaring 20s now we are in the 20s now but they're not roaring we're all kind of like staying at home and i get to come in and see you every tuesday and thursday but this is the roaring 20s and we were just moving into an era where they were manufacturing art and that's how they came about with the art deco look so things were getting put together in geometric geometric patterns and this particular one was really inspired by a tile that was produced back then so i call this one art deco so let's put that one up here and we will look at it now it's a super simple all of my patterns are super simple uh you're going to do this particular uh block you're going to do it in four pieces every block has four pieces to it and you make one with your fabric number one and three and then you make the same block with fabric number two and three so if we look over here at the quilt this is the two and three this is your one and three you always create the largest print is your number one fabric i do not have any more of this fabric but i do have a great fabric to show you this particular one is called paisley parade your number one fabric is going to go in this block and then it's going to have that center piece that's over in the quilt is going to be the blue and then your number two fabric will be here and it too will have that center block of the blue with the blue out in the border so those are your three fabrics for this particular one and its number is 802111 paisley parade art deco is your pattern it is only available in this book easy does it now the cool thing about three yard quilts is that you can use any one of my patterns with any one of the sets of fabric that i show you so you could do these stepping stones as your pattern so as i said it's as easy as one two three you're going to pick out three fabrics and you can make a gorgeous quilt like that now our next quilt this one is called best friends now best friends i designed because i have a friend who loves butterflies and i had this cool little metallic butterfly i think we're out of this kit we have just a we have a few left of a different version oh okay oh it has a black and white polka dot so we do have some of these available on the the web in fact we have hundreds of kits on the web so you'll want to be sure to check that out not just the kits that we're showing you today but at fabric cafe you're going to have a wide variety of kits to select from so this one has the friendship star and a four patch super simple to do but i have new fabric and it is gorgeous for those of you who like this watercolor look look at this beautiful beautiful fabric this one just came in and it has such a wonderful uh combination of colors so your largest print is your focus fabric and in this particular case because these were smaller prints my number one is here so it's going to be here and your watercolor is going to be here in the middle of this then your number two fabric is your light it will go in the light section and then it will be the sparkle around your friendship star and then the number three is this awesome awesome uh pink would you call what color would you call that ro it's a rosy pink it's a rosy pink so that is going to be where you see the black this is going to be a gorgeous gorgeous quilt so your number is 802 112 arabesque best friends is the pattern from easy does it and it is not available as an individual yet but we do have a quilt pattern called friendship star it has one large block that you could put this fabric in and then your star would be made with your three different fabrics okay the next one is called county fair and we do have this fabric i'll be showing you today county fair is made with three different blocks i did it a little bit different gives it a lot of movement when you do that you've got one big block here and you've got a sashed block and then you've got a pinwheel block so it really gives you lots of movement and it made me think of a county fair where there's so many sights and sounds and you've got the ferris wheel going over here and and you've got the hypnotist trying to draw you in to come in and be hypnotized of course we didn't have a county fair this year but we've got the fabric so here's the gorgeous fabric to go with this one so the largest fabric the largest print is going to be in your large block the number two fabric is the gold and then the number three fabric is your teal so let's look at that focus fabric number one goes in the number one position then the gold goes in the number two and the teal goes in the number three this one is called eastern treasures 802081 county fair the pattern is only available county fair is only available in the fast and fun but we do have an alternate pattern called easy street all right now the next one that we have for you is called farmhouse chic farmhouse chic is done with the neutral colors and i do have a second version to show you because we we ran out of this little gray but i do have another version to show you and then i have some new fabric that just came in so we're going to put that one up and this is another one that's just gorgeous it's called it's called delicate blossoms isn't that pretty this is one that we all went ooh and ah when we opened up that fabric box and saw how pretty so this is going to go in your number one spot which is going to be here your largest print goes in number one and the number two is your light and your number three is your dark so you've got your pink is going to be here and in the center and then your black and white polka dot will be here and in your border now remember when i talked about the power of three i bet just a couple of quilts you already understand you just need three one yard cuts of fabric a focus a light and a dark and you won't forget that when you're out shopping for fabric either you'll always be able to easily select fabric for a future kit 802111 three the delicate blossoms and it's the farmhouse chic pattern only available in the easy does it an alternate pattern would be the dominique now every time you buy a kit you get to pick one free pattern and any one of the patterns that i have published will work but if you want to skip taking the little patterns and you don't take that buy three kits you can get one of my books free so you pick out the book you like best buy three kits it's free all right the next one that i want to share with you this is the replacement for the farmhouse chic now remember we had the same gray in that quilt and then we have a light gray or a kind of an off-white with a gray leaf on that for your number two and then this one is your number three the little darker print that's going to look really good in that farmhouse chic this is a last chance there's only three remaining the number is 802 111 farmhouse elegance it's the farmhouse chic pattern only available in the easy desert but an alternate pattern would be the pretty please so three of those remaining and remember two kits would make a twin so that would be a good thing for you to go check that out now the next pattern is called harmony we have sold out of this particular fabric but we have some new fabric to show you this one has a rectangular shape and then the snowball pattern here i said when i did this when it made me think about those zen rocks that you see stacked up in decorating nowadays i thought that would be a good name harmony for that one now this one is a black and white and burgundy that's going to be gorgeous we would put the number one fabric is in the snowball so you're going to have your black and white there and it you can use any fabric in any position in a three yard quilt that keeps it real simple too so if you prefer to put your geometric in this block you could do that by simply switching your places so this is your number one we would put it in the snowball or this one your background is going to be the white and then your alternate block is going to be the burgundy so these two are going to be stacked on top of each other whether you use burgundy here and black here or vice versa it's a cool way for you to quilt because any one of the positions will work for any one of the fabrics as long as you cut everything i tell you to cut out of one position 802 1115 burgundy illusion is the name of this kit harmony is the pattern it's only available in the book easy does it but a good substitute would be the gallery pattern so you can take either the book free when you buy three kits or you can take an individual pattern okay the next one we're out of this fabric it's a great fabric i really like that but we are out of this particular one am i right on that you are okay we're out of this one i talk like i know what i'm talking about sometimes so this one not available but we have some other fabric that'll look great so let's put that up here we got a lot of new fabric in this week so we're enjoying showing you what we put together so here is the beautiful fabrics that we got for this one this one would have your number one fabric and remember it's the largest print so if you look over here you can see they're the same coloration but this is the largest print so this is your number one position it's going to have these gorgeous flowers the number two position is the white the same as we have here and then the number three position is going to go here and this one is called dreamy 802115 lightning is the pattern easy does it is the book that the pattern is in it's not available as an individual so our alternate suggestion is jigsaw now in every one of my books i try to give you a book i mean a pattern that's super super easy they're all easy but then i give you a super easy one this one's called overnight sensation this is when you find out that you need a quilt tomorrow you can get this one done in about six hours it's a huge four patch and it's done with strip piecing so you will sew large strips together you'll cut them into i call them chunks you'll cut them into units and then you will arrange them on your quilt you'll sash that and a voila it's a quilt so we'll put that one up here and we have this adorable fabric and it's the disney princesses so it's pretty easy to tell that this is your focus fabric with the princesses and then look at these adorable hearts so your princess is going to the princess will go in the number one position the pink and the number two and the purple in the number three so as easy as one two three you've got overnight sensation the number is 802034 for the kit number royalty is the name of the kit the pattern overnight sensation is only available in the book easy does it but you can use sweet times as an alternative pattern it would work well okay the next you know i showed you that one is overnight sensation this one i named time machine because it's going to take you a little bit of time i not only give you a super easy one i give you one with a little bit of a challenge it's not hard but just a little more challenge because you've got some half square triangles going on in this particular one so we've got a big block showing off your focus fabric and then we've got the half square triangles that make this design up so it's a beautiful quilt and we got some more new fabric in for this one as well so let's look at that this one is called paisley jubilee isn't that yummy and if you look it's a metallic it's got a little bit of silver going on in it so this is your focus fabric it'll go in the big block and then your half square triangles are going to be made with the silver dot and the wonderful kind of a plummy color it's really pretty and it also has a little silver to it i tell you these manufacturers have perfected the metallic fabrics we've been getting a lot of beautiful ones in so this one is 802116 paisley jubilee time machine is the name of the pattern in the book easy does it it's only available in the book but we do have an alternate pattern that's a lot of fun it too has half square triangles and this one's called tumbling triangles would be a good alternate pattern if you wanted to just get one we also have a last chance that we want to share with you and this one there's only two of these remaining and this one has these gorgeous purple blooms and then you've got a uh this one is not metallic but it has great different shades of gray in the polka dot but that goes really well with the gray tones in this fabric and then the third fabric is this pretty purple very very pretty quilt because this is the last chance we are recommending the same pattern time machine it would look great in this uh that pattern is in easy does it only but an alternate pattern here would be the diamond dust and that would look really good you'd have this in the background and this would be one of your diamonds and then the purple would be in the other that would be gorgeous there are only two left on that one though so if you like the kids that
