and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit everything that there is everything that exists was created through the eternal word of god jesus christ who was here on this little planet earth the same eternal what tells us that it is more important to follow god and keep his commandments than to have wealth this is said so often that it makes no impression on us but let's hear it again to be a disciple of jesus is greater than to have money you must really consider what jesus says because the world is confidently preaching that life is all about status power wealth pleasures the gospel says no today let's listen to it this afternoon at 4 00 pm malaysian time the pope will preside at the opening and launching of the synod of bishops in rome it is a sin of a gathering of bishops towards a more synodal church a church that takes its mission together involving all the local churches in communion and in participation and this synod will complete in the year 2023 let's pray for the pope for the whole church that when we become a much more involved church i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i failed to do to my fault to my fault to my most grievous fall therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen lord have mercy lord have mercy christ have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy lord have mercy glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins [Music] have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray may your grace o lord we pray at all times go before us and follow after and make us always determined to carry out good works through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns of you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of wisdom i prayed and understanding was given me i entreated and the spirit of wisdom came to me i esteemed her more than scepters and drones compared with her i held riches as nothing i reckon no priceless stone to be her peer for compared with her all gold is a pinch of sand and beside her silver ranks as mud i loved her more than held a beauty preferred her to the light since her radiance never slips in her company all good things came to me at her hands reaches not to be numbered the word of the lord thanks be to god fill us with your love that we may rejoice fill us with your love that we may rejoice make us know the shortness of our life that we may gain wisdom of heart lord relent is your anger forever show pity to your servants fill us with your love that we may rejoice in the morning fill us with your love we shall exalt and rejoice all our days give us joy to balance our affliction for the years when we knew misfortune fill us with your love that we may rejoice show forth your work to your servants let your glory shine on their children let the favor of the lord be upon us give success to the work of our hands fill us with your love that we may rejoice a reading from the letter to the hebrews the word of god is something alive and active it cuts like any double aged sword but more finely it can slip through the place where the soul is divided from the spirit or joins from the marrow it can judge the secret emotions and thoughts no created thing can hide from him everything is uncovered and open to the eyes of the one to whom we must give account of ourselves the word of the lord thanks be to god hallelujah hallelujah blessed are you father lord of heaven and earth for revealing the mysteries of the kingdom to mere children hallelujah the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you o lord jesus was setting out on a journey when a man ran up knelt before him and put this question to him good master what must i do to inherit eternal life jesus said to him why do you call me good no one is good but god alone you know the commandments you must not kill you must not commit adultery you must not steal you must not bring false witness you must not defraud honor your father and mother and he said to him master i have kept all these from my earliest days jesus looks steadily at him and loved him and he said there is one thing you lack go and sell everything you own and give the money to the poor and you will have treasures in heaven then come follow me but his face fell at these words and he went away sad for he was a man of great wealth jesus looked brown and said to his disciples how hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of god the disciples were astounded by these words but jesus insisted my children he said to them how hard it is to enter the kingdom of god it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of god they were more astonished than ever in the case they said to one another who can be saved jesus gazed at them for men he said it is impossible but not for god because everything is possible for god the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ brothers and sisters last week we listened to the marriage covenant in the gospel of mark we saw how god was the one who who was faithful to us and never divorce us in the first place and we heard on what god has united men cannot divide and see how the marriage covenant is the symbol of the unity of the trinity here on earth and thus in this sunday 28th sunday and ordinary time we continue again reading the gospel of mark chapter 10 on the question of eternal life on how to get our happily ever after jesus slowly teaches us and reveals to us how to attain eternal life since all his teaching from the previous sundays on how to be his true followers on his spirit is free for all on the marriage covenant as a deep relationship of god and his people it is already a road map on how to achieve eternal life and let us look at the gospel for this sunday the gospel began with the question of a rich young man on what to do to get eternal life today we will encounter this in a man who has been seeking to follow the commandments since he was a young boy he thinks that he has prepared himself well to enter eternal life but jesus invites him to something deeper something more and before we understand the message of jesus we must understand what eternal life is eternal life is a place where god and man can live in peace with each other it is being a life that never ends everlasting love and happiness that will never fade away however at that time the jews believe that they must strictly adhere to the old covenant and its commandment to inherit eternal life the ten commandments were believed to have been written on two tablets of stone when given to moses the commandments of the first tablet related to god's love and the second tablet's commandments related to the love of neighbor when jesus begins his answer to the rich young man by saying that god alone is good jesus is reminding him and us that the love of god is the starting point for eternal life jesus is thereby making a subtle allusion to the first tablet of commandments that states we should worship god alone jesus then least six commandments that the young man is to follow which come from the second tablet and are related to the love of neighbor the young man responds that he has observed these laws jesus looking at him with love tells him that there is one thing he still likes since the young man successfully loved his neighbor which part of the law was left it is the love of god of course which is the first tablet of the ten commandments and jesus asked the young man to give up all his possessions and follow him when jesus asked the young man to give up all his possessions he asked him to pursue the path of perfection and holiness which cannot be completed without the help of the grace of god in this way jesus is revealing himself as the fullness of the law he has come to give us the grace to pursue the path of perfection jesus asked us to love him today above all else he asked us to put aside our personal habits and way of life and even perhaps our bodily life for him are we willing to follow him and love him in this radical way jesus offers us the way to eternal life in today's gospel we must not only follow the commandments and omit sin from our lives but also we must surrender our entire lives to christ and thereby follow him this process is much easier said than done because we can easily become consumed by worldly goods and affairs these things very easily distract us from jesus how often do we desire to pray but end up spending time in others in other things jesus is inviting us to walk on the narrow road he doesn't promise it will be easy in fact it will be quiet the opposite he says that man cannot follow his path alone but god will make all things possible let us reflect in ourselves do we give excessive time to the things of this world where do you think we will find happiness what is holding us back from following christ entirely and sacrificially therefore we see the path that jesus leads us we must pray for wisdom to know the way leading us to eternal life let us look at king solomon the author of the first reading the book of wisdom god asked solomon for whatever he might desire rather than asking for worthly things that a king might desire such as wealth or power he asked for the wisdom to rule his people well god is very pleased with the solomon's request and grants him his wish for wisdom along with every worldly blessing besides and we might be reminded of the phrase seek first his kingdom over you his way of holiness and all things will be given you holiness and wisdom often go hand in hand genuine holiness will tend to lead though we tend to lead to wisdom and genuine wisdom to holiness we receive wisdom as the gift of the holy spirit at our confirmation if we seek his way of holiness first that wisdom will grow in us to bear its full fruit in every aspect of our lives and we can gain true wisdom from the word of god in the second reading from the letters to hebrews it says that the word of god cuts more finely than a double-edged sword the word of god penetrates the human souls that is why we need to read the scriptures to come to know the ways of god then we will be able to understand the world and even ourselves as god sees them the word of god also become flesh that is in jesus christ himself we can see that wisdom in jesus christ including the wisdom of the cross that the world sees as foolishness but then reveals to us and thus best teaches us how to be truly wise to lead a good and happy life the wisdom of the cross also teaches us that we lose what we keep and we gain what we give away jesus is willing to give up his life on the cross for us and by god's grace he is resurrected and living in eternal life thus when we lose our lives for jesus christ we gain pricely treasure and inheritance which lasts forever whatever we give to god comes back a hundred fold jesus offers us a treasure that no money can buy no thief can steal therefore brothers and sisters today let us surrender our lives into the hands of jesus as followers of jesus who are ready to give our lives for his sake let us pray for wisdom and ask god to grant us his wisdom so that we may see as god cease ready to give our entire life for god as jesus did on the cross that leads us to eternal life i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light to god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man he foreign death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who together the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen god all things are possible we are encouraged and strengthened by the word of god and as followers of jesus we bring our needs to the father as we respond lord hear our prayer lord hear our prayer may we be given the gift of wisdom to help us achieve balance in our lives and may we value what is of lasting importance giving us insight into god's purposes for ourselves and for our world we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer may we be guided by gospel teaching in our attitude towards wealth tempering our need for money and security with a desire to be generous as god commands we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer jesus commands us to be serious about the gospel may we be generous with our time and resources in working to establish god's rule in our world and to be constant in our witness to god's truth justice and love we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray that god the spirit may lead the sins of bishops which will be launched today and completed in two years that the whole church may become a church in communion in participation in the mission that god has given her and that the governing of the church may be shared by all local churches in the world as desired by the second vatican council we continue to pray to god in this difficult time of the pandemic we pray especially for families who have to stick together in love forgiveness and appreciation and they spend so much of time together we pray that all may learn to pray not to lose heart that we be careful never to worship wealth and pleasures prayer to send joseph hale guardian of the redeemer spouse of the blessed virgin mary to you god entrusted his only son in you may replaced the trust with you christ became man bless joseph to us too show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life obtain for us grace mercy and courage and defend us from every evil amen pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church accept o lord the prayers of your faithful with the sacrificial offerings that through this acts of devotedness we may pass over to the glory of heaven to christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for through his paschal mystery he accomplished a marvelous deed by which he has freed us from the yoke of sin and death summoning us to the glory of being now called a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation the people for your own possessions to proclaim everywhere your mighty works for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions and with all the hoes and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without and we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord are found of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them lying to do fall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you when a similar way when supper was entered he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of the we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray the partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and john our bishop and all the clergy remember also brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god it blessed joseph her spouse if the blessed apostles simon the zealot and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coerced with eternal life and may praise and glorify you to your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and saved from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are
