[Music] [Music] today i'm behind the wheel of a brand new 2020 tesla model y and this is the tesla that everyone is talking about because it's the right size it's also the right price and it's the latest tesla which means it has all the gadgets and gizmos and upgrades versus the other models like the three the s and the x so just how good is this model why well keep watching let me get started first let's talk about the range and power and some of the specs that you might be wondering about so there's two model wise to choose from there's a dual motor long range and then there's the performance this one is the long range which gets 316 miles per charge now in terms of engine horsepower total combined or dual motors about 386 horsepower and 0 to 60 comes at 4.8 seconds and quarter mile around 12.7 so even though this is not the performance model y it is still very fast so once i start driving i'll let you guys know how this feels all right next let's look at the outside quite honestly this model y looks almost the same as a model 3 or a model x or model s and that's on purpose this model y has that same tesla vibe the same feel a bubbly round shape but it still has a wide stance so overall i like this look now moving the front because this is ev and there's no engine up front you don't need to have a big grill opening that's very popular among the manufacturers these days in fact there's there's basically no grill opening at all you have a couple of headlights of course led daytime running lights and on the bottom you do have led fog lights and because there's no engine up front you got a large frunk or trunk in the front and as you can see it's pretty big you could put groceries in there definitely no problem and you could probably fit like small luggage up there too the only downside to the front is this lid is kind of flimsy uh it feels like it's almost gonna bend when you're pushing it down and as you can see when you close it you know the gap is not even across and i'm going to talk about that in a little bit in terms of some of the quality issues on the outside now moving to the side the model y kind of has a crossover slash minivan look it's very bubbly round the roof is quite high but does slope down in the back has kind of like a sport back shape towards the end overall i think it looks okay what helps with the look is as you notice there's no chrome there's chrome delete on here everything the window surrounds the handles everything is painted black you do see some black cladding around the wheel fenders and towards the bottom of the doors adds a little contrast to the white which i think is okay some of you guys may prefer that to be completely painted now moving towards the back it kind of looks like a model 3 but lifted again kind of round bubbly the tailgate slopes down quite a bit kind of has that fastback look what i like is if you look on top the glass is basically tinted black and that carries to the back side is also tinted black so i mean it has that good contrast with the white i like that you have a spoiler back there that's built in and you have pretty distinctive looking led tail lights as well of course there's no exhaust tips nothing like that underneath because there's no gas engine so as for the tailgate you do get a power tailgate it's not a hands-free setup and once you're inside you can see there's a good amount of space what's surprising is the the cubby holes on each side is very very deep it's like half my arm length and underneath the cover you get a ton of hidden storage it is massive it is massive you could hide your kids in there if you wanted to it is really large and then even above it there's a little bit more of hidden storage just depends on what you want to put there but overall i think the trunk is well designed it's plenty big and if you wanted more cargo room in terms of lifting furniture or anything big a kayak or a bike you can just fold down the second row seats there are buttons on the side they electronically fold down now you can also fold down the second row through the seat backs there's a lever that you can pull the problem is once the seat backs are down to fold them up is really really difficult i mean the the the spring action is is pushing the seat back down and it doesn't help you when you're trying to push it back up so it feels like a hundred pounds when you're trying to lift it back up now the door handles don't pop out like the other models you do have to press in and then pull once you're in the second row you're greeted with plenty of leather so in terms of leather choice you could choose black or you could choose white and the white looks really good except you have to worry about always keeping it clean for me i'm five feet ten and you can see i have probably three to four inches of legroom left and equal amount in headroom so it's pretty big and the seats do recline rear passengers do get a set of vents two usb ports and two cup holders inside the middle arm rest area and it's quite difficult to open it you have to shove your fingers in there those of you guys that have bigger fingers you might have a hard time doing so there's really no gap front cabin is very very minimalistic the steering wheel actually has a really good thickness i like the leather feel actually it feels pretty good right thickness and all you get on each side it looks identical is these like scroll knob kind of things and you you use that to control your volume and you can control other things such as moving your steering wheel and such as adjusting your mirrors so they are quite handy behind them you have a shifter stock and also a wiper stock and that's pretty much it it's very very minimalistic you do have a bun that electronically pops the door open now i was thinking like what if you run out of power right in emergency situations well there is also another lever to open your door it's it's hidden it's not marked in any way but it's right above the window switches so moving to the infotainment screen this is beyond infotainment screen this is everything you can control all settings um all presets navigation your entertainment everything is controlled through this and you can even control your vents which is crazy you can control which side is blowing and so this this animation looks amazing and you may have noticed that it's only blowing in front of the driver because i'm the only one in this car it could detect if there's someone else next to you then that actually enables it's actually really cool and you can turn on and off all the heated seats in here the one thing is you don't get heated steering wheel which is kind of disappointment and also there's no ventilated seats in here as well if you need to entertain yourself or your kids while you're parked you can netflix hulu youtube twitch tutorials it's all there if you subscribe to the wi-fi service then you can watch it wherever you go so under your vehicle settings is where you control everything vehicle controls uh you can control your lights your fog lights you can adjust your mirrors your steering wheel if they fold window lock and then you go down lights locks display i mean you really could adjust everything under driving you can control your acceleration uh since this is not the performance you don't get ludicrous it's either chill or standard you control your steering you're a regenerative braking and stopping mode you know for me i'm used to a normal car so i like how the car rolls but if you guys don't want that you just want it to hold as soon as you let go of your brake pedal it could do that so this one does come with the full self-driving and autopilot so i'm going to test it out and this also comes with summon which i'm actually going to test right now i'm in a forest preserve in a parking lot let me see how good summon is all right for the first test i'm standing about 30 feet away and there's no curb or anything between us the model y backed out and headed towards me pretty good but stopped about eight feet short of where i am for the second test i'm on the other side of the parking lot and i wanted to see if the model y can get to me without crashing into anything i had my fingers crossed the whole time as i was afraid an oncoming car or a car backing out will cause the model y trouble the model y did very well and took a bend by itself but then stopped the app said i was at maximum range why the app didn't tell me before i started summon i don't know i had to initiate it again for the model y to come to me eventually it did but it overshot me again and then of course you have navigation your safety and security and you can open your glove box i mean everything you want to adjust is in here on the left side you can see what gear you're in uh you can open up your trunk front frunk and back trunk also you have a few more settings like your tpms and your range the mirror the rear view mirror is a little bit small for some reason and on the very top you have one gigantic panoramic sunroof or just just like glass that's up there it is tinted it is huge it's an entire roof now i wonder how it is when it's very sunny out very hot because right now i'm i'm in the shade right now i want to see how it is once i start driving all right i'm on the road let's see how how well this model y drives so let's talk about noise level cabin noise which i think is really good in here i've driven other teslas and this to me is the quietest tesla out there this model y is extremely quiet first of all there's no engine noise right we know that there's no gas motors in here but even the electrical wind from the electric motors is very muted i really don't hear it in a model s i i heard it model x i heard it so i don't really hear it in here so tesla really muted it down which is great and plus just from the outside wind noise nothing cars passing by almost nothing and what i love is no road noise either i mean the tires are really good i just don't hear anything outside this model wide so sound insulation fantastic here fantastic and and for again those of you guys that haven't driven the tesla or ev you have to get used to the fact there is no engine vibration engine rumble exhaust note nothing like that it's just pure quietness now the steering steering i really like um i have steering right now in comfort mode but i can tell you even in comfort mode it is very very very precise there is zero play zero play in a steering wheel and and i really mean that uh as you can see on screen right here i i'm doing this you know slight wiggle and i feel it in the model y there is zero zero steering wheel play and uh it's really precise and even in comfort mode it has a good weight a good artificial weight you know it's artificial weight electronic steering but it still feels good it feels like i'm connected to this model y so i'm actually a big fan of this steering it's quite good now as you can see i'm coming to a stop and it's very smooth very smooth some of the cars i've driven before especially with regenerative braking like hybrids or even evs it's kind of hard to get the car to come to a stop very smoothly there's something about it that manufacturers have a hard time dealing with but with the model y i don't get that even though i have it to low you know the brake feel is a very linear feel very forgiving your it doesn't come to a stop immediately it's like almost simulating um it's like simulating a regular brake setup it's actually really impressive it really is visibility is great from all sides except the rear the hood slants down so much i can't see any part of it zero parts of it the windshield is big nice on top not that you need to look on top but because of the glass a very nice view but side windows very big blind spot is good too the only thing is the rear window because of the way the the hatch slopes down so dramatically the rear visibility is very small it's like the same window as a exotic car like if you were driving a ferrari or lamborghini that's small decelerator feel also very nice just like the brake it's predictable there's no dead points it's just a very linear feel the more you push down the the faster this model y goes now i mentioned before that i like a regular gauge cluster and that's because i want to know how fast i'm going so it is displayed on this main screen here toward the left side but still i feel like it's a distraction every time i want to know how fast i'm going i have to look down and to the right which i don't want to do that i feel like it takes my eyes off the road so if tesla didn't want to put in a full digital gauge cluster like the s or the x you know i would have loved to see some kind of heads-up display put in here and that's not available either so that that's one thing i don't like i know some people say they get used to it but i still think it's a distraction if you have a heads-up display that tells you how fast you're going that would be great that would be really good now one big improvement inside the model y compared to other models has to be these seats these seats are extremely extremely comfortable and there's something about it a bottom cushion especially the the bolstering around your thighs and your butt it's very soft it's the right size for me at least i don't feel like they're too aggressive but it is holding me in same in the back bolster i could feel on my back not too aggressive um but it feels very comfortable like these seats i feel like i can drive for hours without without uh without discomfort the one downside is especially on hot days is because these are leather uh there is no ventilated seat option in here which i would love i would love to have in here i think ventilated seats on leather seats is a necessity now some of you guys that have been watching a lot of model y videos you've heard of people talk about quality control issues and this one that i'm driving is fairly new i borrowed this from my friend he only got it for about a month so this is a pretty new model wide that just rolled off the line and after inspection yes there are still quality control issues especially with the body gaps on the outside there are places where the panels are just not flush places where the gaps are just a little bit too wide too big and there are just small places here and there where you just notice it if you're paying attention now if you're a bystander walking around you're not gonna notice it but if you really look at it you do see it so i think that's that's one of those things that tesla will continuously work on and improve over time but even with this this one that's pretty recent there's still issues like that so there's a there's a few places inside you could argue it's quality control or you could argue it's just a design flaw underneath the gigantic screen you do have a place where you could put your phone wireless charging is in here there's two spots for it but the cover you have to close it very delicately which most people won't know right off the bat so if you just kind of push it down you'll see that it never stops right it just keeps going you have to push it down very very softly for it to stop the same thing with the cover that's just hiding some storage space it's a good amount of space but when you're pushing it down you can see you can't push it down too hard even the screen tells you that you're pushing it down too hard so i i don't know if that's that's more like a design flaw to me than uh than quality control but yeah that's there there are no usb ports up front i guess tesla figured you have wireless charging that's it you don't need to plug anything else but i would still love to see at least one usb port up here now these side mirrors to me are a little bit too small same thing with the rear view mirror i'm not sure why they need to be so small the exterior mirrors i guess to improve uh you know improve range for aerodynamic reasons but they're a tad small in my opinion but the inside one rear view mirror is really small there's no need for it to be this small i don't know that's for suspension is pretty good on smooth roads obviously it's handling it perfectly but i i came across some roads with some bumps and and some dips and for the most part it handled it fine it's not the the softest suspension out there but it's definitely not the harshest either whoa that was going from 15 to about 65 that was a lot of torque that's a lot of torque that that's the that's the thing if you never if you've never driven a tesla or any ev cars uh that instant torque is really different it's not like a gas engine or even a turbo engine where you gotta wait you know wait for the rpms to get up there this is instant torque so even though this is not the performance variant it is still very very fast there is zero issues or zero problems with passing or getting up to speed it is really quick really quick all right so i just enabled autopilot which has been improved this is not full self-driving uh i didn't enable that so autopilot is staying within the lanes i mean in terms of self-driving no one no one competes with tesla tesla's self-driving technology is 10 years 10-15 years ahead of everyone else so in terms of staying in between the lanes you can see the road is curving it's dead middle there's no sway whatsoever i'm going to try a lane change let's see what happens all right yeah lane change was perfect i'm i put on the left turn signal and the model y just moved over it could detect that there's someone behind you in your blind spot it just automatically does it it's just it's crazy it's crazy now as for safety features this this model y is as safe as it can get with like eight cameras and all these sensors and everything it could detect everywhere around you but what's strange is you don't have a 360 view camera system um that's number one and number two is a lot of the things that detect like if there's someone's in your blind spot and stuff like that i mean it shows you on the screen but again it's distracting because you have to get your eye off the road and look at it right to really notice it in most cars there's some kind of warning light on the mirror or in your heads-up display i'll tell you which is not here and there's no warnings on the mirror so again it's just one of those things you have to always like look down to look at it's a little bit of a distraction in my opinion as for pricing the long range model y starts at 50 000 and the performance is 10 000 more keep in mind any color outside of white will cost extra and the full self-driving capability is also going to cost another eight thousand dollars to conclude the model y is the best tesla i've ever driven the brake and throttle feel are amazing and so are the front seats the ride is quiet comfortable and extremely fast when you put your foot down and it goes without saying the self-driving technology as well as the entertainment features and adjustment settings in the model y is light years ahead of the competition however the model y isn't perfect there are still quality issues with the body panels on the outside there are also features that are just not available such as heated steering wheel ventilated seats heads up display 360 view camera system hands-free tailgate to name a few the rear seats are also way too difficult to lift back up and finally i found the one screen setup to be distracting and forces your eyes off the road often in my opinion the good greatly outweighs the bad the model y is a fantastic suv and shows how far teslas have come i'm sure over time tesla will fix and add in the things i've mentioned i'm giving the brand new 2020 tesla model y an overall score of 105 and it is now leading the luxury segment on drivers only
