you well welcome to a new Harry's garage and today's car is the rolls-royce phantom this newly introduced ultimate statement of luxury and rolls-royce Ness I'm very pleased to have it here in the garage I spent a few days with it it's it is an extraordinary car in so many ways there's so many sort of layers to undo but all this car is about is a luxury and how it makes you feel and how it just encloses you in this cocoon of lever and just loveliness anyway there's lots to talk about this car so let's go and have a look at it in closer detail this particular example is a homage to Sir Malcolm Campbell's phantom that he bought in 1933 he was busy braking and the speed records and he was starting to use rolls-royce engines 36 litre two thousand three hundred horsepower Rangers propel him we did a run in Florida only got to 270 miles an hour I think it was just amazing and then commissioned this rolls-royce phantom in these colors so this blue with a black roof and when we get inside you'll see some blue leather a very handsome car were imposing I think is the best word to describe the rolls-royce phantom it is amazingly has present should we say and when you when I first saw it I thought what it just looks such same as the old one but actually it's one of those cars as soon as you put them side by side there's a lot of differences first thing you notice is this sort of just how tough it is at the front it's it arises as is very powerful front end it doesn't differ way and so streamlined I'm not sure this car is actually ever seen a wind tunnel but they tell me it has a CD factor 0.33 which is quite low quite impressive but basically that the radiator has gone into the body that wings come out and they don't have the sort that radio doesn't have this side to it anymore and if you look at this how the metal actually goes all the way down to here if you look at a ghost it's sort of cut around here but this is one beautiful panel and iminium this car all round there and it's yeah it is enormous this car it sits on this particular Sauron 22 inch wheels and when you put another car beside it I put the silver shadow beside it just out of interest these extraordinary the difference it's 50 years of rolls-royce development and it's a very visual statement just as the Silver Shadow was back in a day they passed the powerful front the 22 inch wheels and if the great windscreen a very imposing roofline plant this is actually the standard wheelbase one is an extended wheelbase as well but this is the standard one and then a big difference at the rear is a much more rate rear screen and he come round to the to the back of the car and this bit I have to say is very similar to the previous version I it's a bit like when you're trying to spot a new Fiat 500 to the old 800 of the easy give away the lights and this sort of square inside the rear lights but yeah very similar to the old one but it was yeah there's no mistaken it's a rolls-royce phantom as you imagine a car like this quite enormous boot you'll have no problem with space in this car if you're off on that European tool part of owning the rolls-royce phantom waning else really is the theater about the doors and the rear hinge and just the interior let's open it up and here we have it a mighty impressive interior Niska I should add that the phantom lists going to your rolls-royce showroom starts at three hundred and sixty thousand pounds this is has a few options on it and I twisting Rolls Royces are my I got them to admit this car in this spec is four hundred and sixty eight thousand pounds worth of rolls-royce phantom I'll show you this in more detail when we actually go out and drive I'm gonna I'm gonna get in the back first just to give you a sense of what this car is all about finished site first of all you have the starlet headlining which I'm a big fan of having lived with it I love the way and really dim it down and is always this gentle light inside the cars well has been very recognizable rolls-royce a hurry or statement and then the dash on this they term it as the the gallery and the idea is it's you add your own artwork to it this is has a sort of perforated metal look to it on here and it's all under one sheet of glass stretching between the air vents in between and when you have a look at the dash in a moment they're round dials they're on a separate screen and I can pop that sort of navigation screen comes up in the middle there and I've sort of made it disappear so you can see the dash but what a statement that is one cool function on the navigation is when you come to park you have these amazing cameras on this car and they see all around you and you have this bird's-eye view what I've sort of seen that before but what I have never seen is this function or if I press on here and then I get a virtual sort of out-of-body look of my car where it's parked and I can see around me as I'm walking around the car how does that work not quite sure why I need it but it's very very cool I have to show you the engine this car there it is v12 again as in the previous phantom but this time with two turbo twin turbos and 6.75 liter again I thought it's exactly the same unit as in the Rafe and the ghost but no those are slightly lower CC about 200 cc less and this is a unique setup for the Phantom and with 663 pounds put a tall huge talk 563 horsepower or there abouts a remarkable to you Muraki unit peak talks like 1700 rpm and this has given it a real injection of pace this car previous phantom normally aspirated it was quick but nothing liked as dynamic as this car so I think that's all we need to see let's take it outside on ass go for a drive just before we set off just wanting to show you a couple of neat features on the door which I forgot to mention in the garage and they these doors are self closing so all I have to do to make the clothes if I just press this button look at its self closes rear you get obviously the infamous umbrella kept in the door what you should know is when you're speaking on these cars obviously it's a blue umbrella you can spec it to whatever color you have on your car and then like the front if I just do this it will close which is very clever and the paint finish on Rolls Royce is off the scale I have no idea that showing up working sitting down but it is truly a mirror finish and they get that finished by hand lacquered and then hand sanding it down until you get this most perfect there finishes first thing you have to remember when you get in and out of this car is not to leave the door all the way open like you do that and you sit down he suddenly realized no I can't get to the door but it's alright because if there's a also a button to close him on the inside so you can do that everybody's used harnesses in a car and strap themselves into a heart yeah four-point harness and then realize they left the door open that's a very good thing to have and then you're presented with welcomed Rolls Royce and a picture of your car and the - so that is a screen sort of comes up as you open the car so it sort of wakes up and water sighted ease sort of thin wheel and it's got some controls on it here and you've got a gear change etc there to start it I just press a button here and it comes in it's is a service due April 2019 driving comfort temperature restricted right because I've turned the fan down so it's just playing a little tune to tell me that seven and a half degrees out so this is meant to be the start of summer in the UK and it's and it's run off again it's disappeared down to the Mediterranean or something so it's a bit chilly outside very clear heads up display comes up and I and I just love the ambience just this relaxing feel you get the Suzie startup and to move off I sort of did one they're going to drive unlocks and off you go only if you vote first are you ever driven this car or ever stepped in it there's a hush nurse as you put away in this effortlessness that it soon comes very addictive and it's the sort of way rolls-royce are today they've sort of cracked it on the insulation and this wafting us and this cocoon it's worth dropping the window every now and then and just seen it's almost like you've got bulletproof glass on this car it's sound thick it's two layers it's double glazed and the plastic in the middle yeah impress it so I'm gonna make a way out the village and then first of all and drive it to sort of separate areas and I want to try it on my usual dynamic Road as I call it and then I'm gonna try it at a sort of city or on a longer stretch around see how it forms both things this this car has to do everything in my book let's find out if it can just make my way out the village and I've come this way because down here it's really quite narrow and then there are some speed bumps I know it's just one of those things that all I read about this car is that it's just amazing it's ride and they've I speaking to the engineers and I know they put a huge amount of effort into it because they have a policy of using a run flat tires and run flat tires don't do anything for ride especially on this car which are 22 inch wheels retires to 85 40 section so yeah Continental did a lot of work my Lourdes is narrow and this is a big car yes I put my cameras back on they stay on at speed and we see not they just come on for a little bit and that's all you get and they added they ended up adding foam to the tires to the side walls as part of the as part of the scene a part of it is insulating to give it this sort of cosseting ride these tires are unique to this car so that's the sort of effort they put into it but here the speed bumps let's see how it handles a speed bump not bad not bad these are pretty pretty angry speed bumps they're long ones but there we go yeah it's a bit of thump but it but it it took it okay that won't have to say another one here's a bit of movement isn't there it's like a low spring rate is obviously they recognized apparently there's two cameras that look ahead and spot things I guess they would have spotted the speed bumps and they just put the damping at the lowest rate and then the spring rate low as well say it was extraordinary but it did smaller the you know I didn't really have to slow down for them and off we go now let's see what it can do in a bit more Chinese in bitter Road had to say it's good have you hear that there's a bit of a snarl for this engine completely different to the previous generation of phantom there's twin turbos give it proper performance very grateful for a water curve because they figured they found some quite recently and achieve the astonishing speed of eleven point eight seconds 200 miles an hour that was so far ahead of previous version of fancy but that's that's getting rapid for a two and a half ton limo there's nearly six meters long I want to make more of the performs I just press low on the gearbox and then it just cuts out the higher gears and it just is in a lower gear than it would normally be and it's yeah it's a job to keep it at the speed limit I have to say in this mode steering's light stays pretty pretty feel free the steering on it weirdly the heads-up annoys me because it's button if it's just higher and whether I can move it there's so many menus on this but the moment is right where I want to look out the window screen so normally they're slightly lower so your where you want to look but just sit below that but this one seems to sit right back where I want to be looking out and let's see what it can do around here a bit of a test it's slightly soggy pedal brags not there's slightly out of its comfort zone it's got we've got lots of flashing traps controls yeah it's got dynamic anti roll system on it so it will detect what I'm trying to do and add a maximum ante role to the cars let's just calm it down yeah it it sort of does that sort of thing slightly under protest but not something you wouldn't go and search out your favorite bitter road and attack it ineffective let's say that this bit around give it a bit more of a test this is there's some box sort of some changes in elevator on this road it's great fun but I can't see this car being particularly good at it well let's find out there we go here's the first one look dear then we ready Oh everyday out of flying phantom I'm yeah it it didn't absorb those as much as I thought it's almost as though it's a bit restrictive on the amount of suspension travel it's got there is a surprise I thought it would have almost bottomless suspension and come up on that on its Springs and go back down but no it it got quite quickly to either end of its suspension travel one of those one thing is though is hushed nobody can tell but there is just no wind noise doesn't exist nothing there that zero justice work this slight surprises are sort of matter to be if we hit an evil congratulation doesn't deter from the tire it doesn't completely just take it and do it without us or a second wave there is a yes it does ride well but I would qualify that I think it's the best riding car ever had on air Springs and 22 inch rims but I know my is silver shadow down here is amazing it is has gazillions of other things that has lots of wind noise a lot of rattles I can hear suspension working but their actual ride is better than this but this is the best riding car I've ever been in on air Springs I'll give you that I don't know you might sense shimmied there's a strange shimmy I would expect the car like this to absorb that but then again I am I keep finding myself just going over the speed of it it does it can munch miles this thing right well there we go is there's a test on dynamic roads next I want to try it on a typical for this gas or dual credit open space just see what it's like there well say I thought about where we're just on that bit of road this is the first rolls-royce phantom with four-wheel steer just as a little bit of that at the back and as you probably know four wheel steers they do call a longer low speeds when you believe ringing in above about six miles and how they do they go they turn the other way and it just makes it that a little bit more nimble and that's I have to say you sense that here you know it your brain says is two and a half tons of limo for you yeah you can chuck it around there was interesting wife the toasting system cool hot cars quite quick and yet I think because it's so quiet and there's no real sense of speed you don't realise quite how quick you're going which is be naughty isn't it really especially if you've got more there we go as I ran about scale to dual carriageway now but there is a snow [Music] he is muted but there is a different snore there and yeah there we are dual carriageway now or of is natural gate just as I say it's a wonderful car to do a journey just now it's something that did I say I've been lucky enough to use his car for a few days I gotta sit them but the crews on and it's for the distance the braids are all that's all clever stuff but the buttons are quite confusing especially at night because you you see it's it's an on/off reset and they're all nice and lit at night but you don't press those you press a button beside where it's lit up well has a bit ordered but if I want to put the speed up and down I press the buttons that are litter so it's a bit confusing yeah there's a lot going on on the wheel you do have to learn it but I just find it odd that some buttons are lit up that you press and some of them are just beside where it's litter minor first world problem has the radar crews were just coming into a 50 zone here disappear there's some roadworks and it does very good on the break-in as you'd imagine it's a really sophisticated cruise radar control and auto braking as well seated position is good the seats we had that Rafe that we were very lucky to go to Villa d'Este a that black that the seats are definitely better in this this one this card there has quite an aggressive massage function as well but they elongate there are more settings I actually bring myself up higher than I would normally sit in the car just because there's this expansive bodies and just want us if you want to see the corners which are helpfully on this car painted in a lighter blue where you have to elevate the seat otherwise it's just nothing there just the vastness of this car is quite remarkable it's amazing we're cruising along at spinach 70 we are using well to go to the power gauge we're using about we have in reserved about 96% so well hardly using engine capability at all but this silver speed as a trip computer which is quite interested on 2600 miles on this thing on this last trip and I see the in average mpg is nineteen point two mpg I would suggest that's pretty good the average speed is 40 miles an hour so to have bridge out of this great big car with twin turbo six point seven five litre engine to be able to average 90 point to completely I think that's impressive actually and it gives you around for DeMarre range of there abouts I sort of justify this is though it's a it's a most sensible purchase it's not really a sensible purchase it's just a car to be enjoyed but it's quite nice that if should you have tobacker justify to your bank manager we are such a good night into the other but it's very comfortable this speed again I can just hear a little bit of tired always but that's it no wind at all the controls the ventilation controls on it with there fan speeds of soft medium high and Max and these these thes these wheels as no digital readouts in a rolls like this something there was bit odd when you're off your couch brain just doing 70 miles an hour is that it never quite settles in a straight line you just find yourself nuts in the steering doesn't calm to going straight ahead which is a bit unexpected to know to have no problem be very relaxed at speed but you're just not in it like this I suppose that's all part of this electric power steering it's very light at very low speeds around town is it it's extraordinary light and then it does wait up as you go start going a bit quicker but there is a there is a numbness to the steering on this car that I didn't notice quite as much as in the race so there you go that's what it's like at a cruise I won't fought one more final test for this car and that's why I'm going into Oxford well I'm gonna pick my son Charlie up and then he's gonna drive me because I want to know what it's like in the back I've say rear hinge doors do work very well especially when they're powered like that now it's quite a lot of room in here as you can see we're not just being sat there there's plenty of space and this isn't even the long wheelbase walk no I sit also grab handle there I was sitting the other side if you can just see down here I press I think it's that control there that one there and then look at the seat in front of you I can then that seats away which is really quite clever so you can make yourself even more space just by doing that then down here it's quite nice when you're sitting in the back of the car this is to be able to put the seat the your feet up so that there's a little thing there that then elevates where your feet are very nice so there we go all we need now is a driver oh we have a driver last obvious a few toys back here their access while this controller in here that looks very similar to the one in the front and there's a left and a right and if I press the right down here picked up the table comes out and a screen matter he comes out of the seat and I can do things on if I had my phone plugged in I can do navigation I can just map we are there we are scent of oxygen by zooming or green rose very unusual in Oxford to see that there we are all round the other side so I can have media on I think that all I can watch TV and I can really watch the TV because it won't go off so as another advantage was sitting in the back of this car are the things you've got these buttons in the roof if I press this one I get a reading life I also get more stars they go to the full noise and there this is obviously the step center light and you know it really bright if you want on that one put that one down and in here I have a mirror with lights for that final finishing touches just before you get out this is actually the sensible version you just have a look at this center console this one on the step top lifts up and it actually has three seatbelts in the back this is the normally you just decide whether you're going to have two thick seats and a fixed center console and then you end up with a further fridge in there all this one which is sort of more useful if you've got more mates you have this version okay how do you summarize this carlin it's great to be able to experience it in all these modes from you know Royal Roads dual carriageways and now in the centre of Oxford the plus size of it is it's just makes an impression when you see this car outside there's no mistaking it for any other car it has presence by the Skip load and I suppose that's what you want from this car so I like I like the design my only question mark on that is it moved on far enough from the previous Phantom those who know the aficionados will instantly recognize it as the new car then on the rural roads it wasn't the most dynamic well there's no surprises there that isn't it's a bit so that's not what it's being developed it can do it and it's surprised it carries a surprising amount of speed but it's it's not it's happy habitat really but then doing the bigger distances it really worked very well I could cover an enormous distance it's stress freeze-dry Venus until you come to park it I suppose I mainly I've got to find out how even it however you're gonna put it but you'll probably have that pre-planned if you're in the market for such a car is this back here I can't get over how much space I've got in here even though this is the standard version I love how the media works I love how big the screens are as well and the individual controls for heat and ventilation and everything I think that superbly thought-out I also like the seeds to be good visibility I'm not feeling enclosed I've got quite deep windows I can see out I can see my gallery etc and so yeah I this is a really nice place to be things I didn't quite like about it I thought it would ride slightly better than it did from all the talk it is a good riding car but could they have done more if they hadn't gone for the 22 inch wheels and this 40 profile tires is that comprehend it just feels like yeah I'd like to try one on 21 inch tasks to see what that's like and also the price how's it jack up how does this car go for three hundred and sixty thousand the 468 and the spec you see it here and I did ask one guy Rolls Royce what was the most expensive one they've done so far and he hinted it was well over a million fully specs in fact it was nearer to two million than 1 million extraordinary the psyche of customers this car appeals to the other surprise I'm surprised I haven't got the sort of hybrid part drivetrain it is only v12 petrol that's it I remembered talking to the CEO of Rolls Royce about six months ago I said you gonna do I Brady said no would go straight to electric we no need to do the hybrid I worry that legislation will take over and the politicians will have these zero emissions owns in town and you might need it don't know the type of where this cars gonna be used it's going to be city centres it's going to be ferrying people about it I'm surprised it hasn't got an electric element and the other thing I just keep thinking about it is that Cullinan is coming in about your sit in a few weeks time how's that going to impact the market for this car because this car is always all about making impression and it is the the new SUV that Rolls Royce don't have to say isn't actually is that going to make a big an impression we won't know until it comes out but for now this is the ultimate Rolls Royce feels the pinnacle of Rolls Royce if you want to drive one to drive I will still choose the reef it has better steering and it's more dynamic and it's more enjoyable front seat if you want to sit here occasionally then you go for the Phantom and it's a superb car and it's been a real pleasure to have it over the last few days so there you go that's the rolls-royce phantom hope you enjoy the video if you have keep watching please subscribe more videos coming on very soon you
