welcome to a new Harry's garage video and today's car is a 2005 Ford GT you see here this is a UK example so one of 28 that's all that came into the UK officially 101 were exported back in the day it's a car we know pretty well back from Evo days this is car of the Year 2005 it's when the little renault clio when I bought that car the overall winner that year was a Ford GT and I thought I was lucky enough to actually drive it back from France south of France this test took place drove it home so I've done a lot of miles on one of these and it's a car I really love and I think it's a great statement car so let's go and have a closer look such a striking looking car every time I get one it's beautifully proportionate I always think the Ford GT and I also loved the story of how he actually came to be built in the first place basically Ford were looking to how they're going to celebrate their centenary year 2003 and join a flight of Volvo with the top management so there was a suggestion that came from Chris Theodore who'd recently joined them from Chrysler what about doing a mid-engine car in the way of the Ford gt40 original one is a celebration of Ford manufacturing J Mays was there richard perry jones jack nasa listen yeah that's the great idea we could do that and that was how this got formed so he's on a flight to Volvo it would just finalizing the deal because it back back then they were buying there was a premium brands they were Land Rover and Jaguar also bought and it was actually on the flight to Volvo that this car the conception of it and the trigger for it to be created was born and on the outside it is say they then showed it in 2003 three prototypes and he actually went into production late 2004 2005 and 2006 was the fine car rolled off the line 4,000 were built in all the only giveaway for the hundred years on the car lease if you look at that headlight you see the one in the two zeros that was the signify a hundred years just quite work on this side so you have to look at that one but that's the only way you can tell is that was full or inside joke of the hundred years how to put it on the car the design of it and how they got proportions of it I mean it hats off to the design team Jae Mazor over oversaw it Jamie it's quite famous for doing the Audi TT was it howdy and then went over to Ford Premier Division and it's just beautiful looking car you know it's hard to think this isn't half 15 years old or they're about the proportions were so right from the off this particular car has these BBS that they were an option will Forge where you're slightly lighter you get painted calipers the stripes are extra and a CD unit so it was it was a you know pretty basic car and but as soon as it was released the world went mad for it and it was price very attractively $139,000 in the States with all the extras is about an extra $13,000 that was the guide price though and in America dealers are allowed to charge that's a guide price so they charged a bit more and they were around the over $200,000 to begin with it was a bit of a rush for the early cars and you can probably guess why when you look at it full of wonderful design features on this car the front looks like it got these release hinges here in the hull front hinges forward he doesn't actually I put the key in there just that pull that out I could then this up I'm afraid there's no boot on this car what you actually do is just reveal sort of a service I so this is the battery hiding down there some brake bits ABS unit and the back of the rat I do that on the other side the same sort of hinges actually opens the petrol cap what's clever there there's no other cap to and do after that you just flick that up take the petrol hose in another great detail from the original g24 gt40 of course the doors I open the door well the half the roof comes out with it it's a wonderful design feature doesn't work quite so well in practice because it doesn't mean that you have to open the door fully to actually get in and out of the car if you if you're in a car park space and you can only open two there we do this crazy sort of limbo sort of thing to try and get you out of the car much easier if you can find space and you can open the door and it's just a wonderful sort of design for you like no other car just on this Ford GT then we lift the back up slightly awkward others catch either side safety catches but that the 5.4 liter v8 supercharged engine and a wonderful unit you'll see when we take this thing out for a drive really muscular 550 horsepower from this five point four litres 500-foot pass a talk but power from the off and it feels that quite sophisticated units very smooth no vibration absolute wonder engine for this car it gives it such character dry-sump tazewell so though this car wasn't actually a competition car they did try something to get the engine well down in the chassis just let me the sump that's nasty Candice reach some get the engine there and right handling and dynamics on this car were the big shock richard perry jones was the guy in charge that he's a really keen of competition Radhi drive at the time remember the Ford Focus how good that was a real surprise they had real dynamic master at Ford when this car was produced and it shines all the way through well it doesn't actually have as you've probably spotted he's any boot space whatsoever say that front hats just a service hat there's no there's a great big exhaust at the back and that's all there's nowhere actually to put anything I'll just lower this down carry on coming around the back very neatly done little gurney flap spoiler here they have to have the crass rigs demand a bumper and there are some kits where you can actually remove this bumper and there to signature giant source this hasn't actually got the standard system on it anymore was quite often those that gets changed for these cars but what a design statement it's still a wow factor and at the price point it was pitched the same sort of prices at Ferrari 360 or there abouts in the day what performance you're getting for your money come let's go and take it out for a drive now after years of get in and out of Ford GT I thought I just teach you how not to hit your head in one of these curls rule number one is to always open the door as far as you can so right now any opens night increase and then it's almost you've got to treat the car almost like it convertible because it sort of cut out here so you get into the car up bolt upright is it where you get in and out and then you've got to remember again close the door open it open it all the way I don't think in your head I'm getting out convertible and lift up like that and get out in this space here don't know why but you tend with most cars it's sort of come out at an angle and fire yourself out there if I do this and then pow you hit your head so yeah rule number one just treat it as a convertible get out of it upright and then you won't hit your head and you can always spot a full GT owner of long standing because of these scars on his head up here rights go for a proper Drive stick getting upset yes the other thing is you even and then you catch your hair as the roof closes so where the door closes with the roof pingas gets very upset we leave the keys in that's what all that was yeah the the mobile infamous immobilizer one of these is quite something as you can tell it was just of a period where immobilizers were probably at their worst really a combination of buttons and turning itself off before you know you're ready sort of 10 seconds after stopping it etc but in here I love the look the simplicity of it it's just turn the fan down a bit yeah heated controls are on this hand iminium center console the and iminium like a puma gear knob 6-speed Ricardo did the gearbox for this car and it's a lovely changes you'll get to see the evocative wheel 4 GT simple 3 spoke smaller than you'd expect power steering obviously and they shrunk the air back as much as they could it's a really good looking wheel and the instruments all I'm looking at is the rev counter redlined at six and a half doesn't sound much but this is a long-stroke engine and there's so much grunt you could you could take all comers on and just use two now if they has an RPM as you'll see engine temperature were up to temperature oil pressure gauge lovely dial some involves etcetera and also there's a boost gauge PSI boosts goes up to 15 pounds I think it's about one bar piece of something like that and fuel level and a speedo finally over there 220 mile an hour speed Oh only needs are 220 mile an hour speed oh this car because it's owned by Turner and seven bars an hour something like that anyway we'll get going also easier clutch this it's the first impressions when you get in this car is everything's a bit easier than expected it's you expect sort of heavy weight controls but no it's a lazy engine velvety engine noise gear chains and lovely clutch action all the omens are good right off to some better roads he has one of the nicest relationships between gear change and clucks really bizarre great engine matter as well it's all this makes that manoeuvring and just mooching about like this piece of cake which is fantastic on a car like this you think you have been completely mad and sort of unsorted because the universe production growth was so small but it was either been vacant forever muscle 6,000 rpm there's conversation stopping muscle on show remember you got six ratios to play with so it's quite a long kid - 850 I put that into the 650 miles an hour he's 1200 rims or clearly and 1200 raves I'm just going to show you a party piece but it's for GT now moving along like this I'm in first gear I'm just going to accelerate hard one that I feel had sense that what actually happened there there is enough talk just the light up the back wheels as it comes on to boost as a supercharger it gets going it just explodes no need to drop the clutch nothing I can I do it again God here again is straight bit Road happens about 4000 rpm or something like that just I had amount of torque it's quite something this car I know and we're back at Evo we were we wondered if it only had 550 horsepower never actually saw someone die no want to see what the true power is but he's a particularly healthy 550 horsepower does he many of you know I used to own a Zonda and the Zonda was similar power had a bit more talk but this weighs 200 kilos more on their amounts but for GT matches exactly of the garni of Zonda c12 s - 100 miles an hour both can do it in seven point four seconds five hundred fifty miles an hour the Zonda is a bitter head it can crack get one 15 16 seconds and the forgt we clocked it at sixteen point nine seconds is any point nine of a second behind a Pagani Zonda it's a very quick culprit day the fact it's sort of analog and who trash control whatsoever [Music] riding feeling when we did that car the end what everybody came back with what it's like a 550 horsepower Lotus Elise that's that's the weirdness with a Ford GT they're all its craziness and like attracts control but one thing it feel is friendly because you feel connected to it it's a mighty impressive machine no wonder there was such a rush to get hold of what when he first came now please great on them its visibility so arbiters a slight oblique t-junction and I've obviously gotta put my nose out so I can have a little love wrap the corner [Music] my eating British sense it is pretty good the quite tall tires 316 sex attire 19 inch but it's torch we say feels as though it'll just go on forever I just love the view of the rear window because what I get to see is a supercharger pulley will the front it's quite an evocative site visibility on the back isn't too bad you don't remember I have a slightly jinxed sort of view of view zapper car having own context but this is pretty good just think you sold eight pillars and things it's the aluminium construction just makes it a bit chunkier it's a bit of a pillar box but for a crazy too Plus mid-engine car very civilized in here obviously I'll go ahead call all the rest of it just love the way you hardly use it any reps I chucking it down here are but 60 miles an hour I mean third gear Beatty trip a team of friends really I mean I'm in fifth we go 60 miles an hour it's just under 3000 rpm so second and third deal of everything the rest but just can't savor economy and the Rope ends here feel like from here no he's turning but no need to chase down but just ride talk don't have to use the rapes until push it 3000 spots us around you know after that diabolo that was a bit scary doing the same sort corner this feels it's like just because it you just sense what the car is doing or you'll not be a less of a passenger in this it has immense ability but it telegraph signal to the driver feels mostly natural unstressed really nice better kid [Music] summarising for GT how do you summarize this gun well it's a real statement from fault I love the way it was designed purely for Road use never any charter this going racing unlike the current GT there was a race car that they've turned into a road car is a bit compromised in my review because of them this is a road car eats miles feels very natural on a road like this a nap trip down and back from the South of France that would they never taught me was it was boring canonical the BMW m6 so there's a myth out the window it would annoy happily do over 20 mpg cruising through France but you don't want to do that we want to drive it on your favourite bits of roads that remember writing and that that is terrific absolutely terrific memorable drive so flippin usable the one of the big downsides I supposed to have with this car is there's just nowhere to store anything there's no door bins there's no glove boxes a little hot hold on the side of the tunnel and there's a little thing here but there's nowhere to put anything needs such a year's a more car but it's the real frustration that you can't dream I'm going off the big trip from it if there's two of you because you've got nowhere to put anything it's even worse than a Bugatti Veyron it back front but then it makes up for it in its saw band it just feels on bursts of all it feels because they were just gone forever it's made by Ford it's made very well and at the price is a real memorable really does compared to that diabolo is sort of different because it feels friendly or on your side I wish the baddies haven't gone quite as crazy there was a time when you could pick one of these up for one before t-150 that was too cheap they're now in the 200s I suppose ass about right because when we drove Lucy was so far ahead of Ferrari 360 on driver appeal had so much more grunt and built in limited numbers although there are 4,000 of them it's much more limited than say a Ferrari 360 or gay are there all that sort of thing that's actually what it was competing against so it's been wonderful to revisit and I have to thank hairpin company again for the load of this car but this is weight just on 2,100 miles from new 2005 car they've got it up I think it's a to 65 to 75 thousand somewhere thereabouts so we've come up for the absolute top but this is a wonderful example UK examples at one of 28 only as new condition and I think it deserves its iconic status from its looks from its dynamics and just the way it feels to drive so there you go hope you enjoyed this video of the Ford GT she keeps ascribing more videos coming on very soon
Ive seen a handful of these in real life, still to this day one of the coolest looking cars made. I like that it doesn't have a bunch of scoops or wings and isn't overly flashy compared to some modern exotics.
Harry's Garage is so good. Thanks for posting this!
A classic if there ever was one.
Harris videos are always great quality, you know this is a man that has a deep experience with driving cars, much more than the run of the mill youtuber showing up the infotainment and how many fake vents the car has.
I can see these GT's going into the millions anytime soon. Such an inconic shape, it looks fantastic, and looks like a future classic car that you can drive. Just a shame that it has literally no luggage space.
This is my grail car.
Driven many of these things. Hands down one of the best supercar/exotics that you can drive. Only down side is if you are over 6'. You will get to experience a head scalping at one point.
Great video as normal with Harry.
Another great watch I found on a GT binge the other night was the Jay Leno interview/talk with the designer of the car, worth checking out if you love these cars.
You mean why Ford decided to mod a Lola MK6 GT?
12:20 oh my
