aggressive in the passing game much as they did last year shot through four touchdown passes two of them bombs one to andre johnson of 60 and 52 kevin walter and a quick snap hand off dennis johnson running on first down picks up four yards on the play von miller there to bring him down take a look at the starting offense for houston chris myers a former denver bronco spent the first three years of his career in a broncos uniform starts in the middle and backs and receivers dennis johnson the rookie out of arkansas johnson getting an opportunity of a lifetime starting in the nfl he was actually released after the preseason because of a fumbling problem hooked on with cleveland now back with houston but a pass to the outside greg jones is angled towards the sideline and picks up three yards in the passing game chris harris with the tackle defensively for denver sylvester williams the rookie out of north carolina and his first career sack last week in that loss to san diego linebackers paris lenin starting in the middle in the base defense you'll also see wesley woodyard and duke ianacho back in the starting lineup after losing the job last week to omar bolden right now john fox still mixing and matching trying to find the right group to get ready for the playoffs chop high throw incomplete the rookie deandre hopkins the intended receiver dominique rogers grimardi there defensively and houston goes three and out to open things up boy that is not the way that matt shaw and the texans wanted to start with a three and out but this coverage by rogers cromartie is absolutely perfect hopkins with no threat going down the field and cromartie rogers gromarty all over him shane leckler the nfl's all-time leader in the gross punting average 47.6 yards per kick trend in holiday the former texan four return touchdowns in his career a flag is down holiday turns the corner holiday slowed down and brought down at the 35-yard line lechler got over there 57-yard punt a 49-yard return but as mentioned penalty marker thrown back in denver territory yeah a couple of illegal blocks in the back here by the broncos negate that fine return by holiday against his former denver broncos will start out deep in their own territory peyton manning 16-3 in his career against houston and this could turn out to be a memorable day for manning well he told us yesterday that with wes welker out with a concussion that the slot receiver position will be a combination of jacob tammy and eric deckard the thought here is that both of these are bigger receivers they will have an advantage going against the smaller safeties of the texans 47 touchdowns passing this season for manning nfl record is 50 held by tom brady in 2007. they'll open up empty out of the gun manning to throw it and a dart over the middle called in by julius thomas and a modest gain out across the 10 near the 15 for six starting offense for denver these guys have done a tremendous job protecting manning 16 sacks for manning this season backs and receivers no wes welker once again out with a concussion speculation as to whether or not they'll shut him down until the postseason john fox would not confirm that in fact said that is yet to be determined by the coaching staff and the medical staff second and four for denver manny gets rid of it quickly and a floater to the outside jacob tammy the veteran tight end played with manning in indianapolis gets out of bounds it's a first down bryce mcdane with the chase defensively for houston j.j watt nine and a half sacks he's gone three games without a sack linebacker sharpton has accumulated a lot of tackles 113 of them and in the secondary those guys will be tested including the veteran jonathan joseph against this denver offense ranked number one manning in stride eric decker first down across the 30-yard line and he pleasant with a stop 16 yards on the hookup and a penalty marker thrown at the 20. the illegal formation offense number 74 is not up in the line of spinach five yards from the previous spot with two first down it's the right tackle orlando franklin called on the penalty for denver 104 penalties against the broncos this year and this one negates a huge play actually 105 counting the penalty on the count return [Applause] so that is now third in the nfl in that category seattle actually leads the league with the most penalties and the texans have 103. but the broncos and the seahawks have been able to overcome them the texans have not first in 15. here's manning to throw it incomplete looking low for decker mccain over there and it's second and long now for the broncos and that's what you want to see if you're a texan on the defensive side is is to have manning hold the ball a little bit and double clutch as he did that time but what a weapon that he is missing today with welker on the sidelines doesn't have his safety valve the 10-year veteran welker five-time pro bowler out with a concussion manning on second and 15. throws a strike to demaryius thomas having a huge season now 79 catches for thomas and over 1200 yards that one covers 13. and right to the line of scrimmage after a positive play on this third and short now not allowing the texans to substitute denver was held to a season-low 295 yards of offense last week in that 27-20 loss to san diego and a season low in points as well third and two for the broncos first possession and a flag comes down [Applause] full start offense number 68 five-year-old penalty the umpire chad brown made the call on zane beatles [Applause] so back it up instead of the third and two third and seven three penalties already against this bronco squad [Applause] denver comes in number one in total offense 453 yards per game number one in scoring over 38 points per game this is a third and seven for the broncos manning drops it in the bucket andre caldwell seeing extended action because of the injury to wes welker caldwell had two touchdowns and the loss to san diego holds on to the football they'll move the chains just a beautiful pass by manning at a good sharp route by caldwell and you can see the zone defense being played by the texans they're taking a page out of that charger defensive playbook chargers played a lot of zone coverage to frustrate manning make him go the long way not give up the big play against the man-to-man 13 yards and a first down for denver fake the running play manning deep ball caldwell it's over his head incomplete andre caldwell former cincinnati bengal he's just been waiting his turn after signing as a free agent last year it'll be second and ten now for denver wade phillips interim head coach of the texans after gary kubiak was let go kubiak went 61 and 64 in eight years as the head coach of the texans did a terrific job with this team moreno breaking through no sean moreno big gain forced out of bounds at the 35 of houston eddie pleasant makes the play but moreno picked up extra yards a total of 31 on the run by moreno a little power play here watch vasquez come over here and block swearinger that opens up the hole first running play for the broncos is a beauty here manning quick snap and a quick hitter eric decker kareem jackson there in coverage and that pace that denver brings very tough to handle for defense's 14-yard gain for the broncos through the air well the broncos have been able to overcome the penalties that they've committed on this opening drive and are real close to the red zone thanks to that fine run by moreno kareem jackson the starting corner for houston now on the texan sideline and an even bigger advantage for peyton manning and look how far off brandon harris is playing manning will operate out of the gun first possession of the day for denver manning throws incomplete a stab there by thomas he couldn't haul it in jonathan joseph the two-time pro bowler in coverage for houston yeah i think peyton manning got a little greedy on that play because joseph really has good coverage here he is right behind thomas and if that ball had been a little bit lower he might have been able to strip it out before the catch 10th play of the drive coming up for john fox's squad line of scrimmage just short of the 20-yard line we've got 9 38 to play in the first quarter montane ball is in they'll pitch it to him ball with a cut and the rookie is brought down not quite enough for a first down but an impressive run as jackson was over there to make the play for houston seven yard game four ball yeah kareem jackson back in the game and uh after one play on the sideline manning goes right after not with a pass play but a running play and it picks up good solid seven yards denver number one in the nfl opening drive touchdown seven of them houston's defense last in the league they've given up seven third and three now for the broncos thomas the motion man manning flips it bunched up defensively ko there to make the play for houston moreno the intended target and that's a win for the houston d as denver will have to settle for a field goal attempt yeah it could have been better but kyo he has a chance to pick this one off watch number 31 break on this route here and if he undercuts mourinho he makes that catch and he goes the distance denver came in number one in the nfl and red zone touchdown percentage 78.3 percent but it's a 32-yard field goal attempt for matt trader you could make those in his sleep denver with a 3 1 seed in the afc chance to clinch the division and a first round bye with a win in a kansas city loss and still a chance to clinch home field advantage throughout denver if they win their final two games they will have home field advantage in the playoffs peyton manning on that drive five of nine for 50 yards spread the ball around to five different receivers not a three nothing lead for denver matt prater will kick it off dennis johnson is deep and this one will take a bounce at the 11 and week they've already got 39 on the ground hooking up with virgil green so that's another denver receiver getting in on the act virgil green with his first catch it's short of a first down he just has seven on the year but uh if they can get virgil green in this two tight end formation it bounces off the defense and mannequin just pick and choose which side he wants to go to julius thomas or to green double top end set on a third and one give it to moreno first down for denver and a flag thrown as mourinho takes it inside the 25 yeah point of attack holding against the broncos [Applause] holding offense number 66 10 yards penalty from the previous spot third down that's the center manny ramirez has a good cut by moreno as he saw the hole to the right side but the hole was created by the holding on ramirez [Applause] yeah it's just a take down there of earl mitchell so denver was looking at a third and one now it's third and eleven they've got four penalties costing them 27 yards in his first quarter getting word that von miller suffered a knee injury his return is questionable for denver on defense fake the hand off set it up for demaryius thomas trying to get him out in space thomas across the 30-yard line but short of a first down jeff tarpinian first man there and then a crowd came over to make the play on thomas it's an eight-yard pickup manning right now is staying on the field on fourth and short yeah for good reason broncos are eight for eight converting fourth downs this season [Music] john fox is deciding to roll the dice here the rookie monte ball [Music] on the field for denver they come up on five minutes to play in this first quarter broncos leading it three to nothing over houston shotgun for manning manning trying to convert the floater is caught by julius thomas but thomas comes up short of the first down could not break free of eddie pleasant i think manning wanted to get the ball to uh thomas a little bit quicker than he did but the traffic right there great closing speed by pleasant to thwart the broncos back in houston denver with a three nothing lead von miller not on the field with an apparent knee injury nate irving is in job is now three out of five back to the ground game johnson takes a lick in the backfield by williams who's back in there for denver counting down to the three-minute mark of this first quarter 100 catch seasons all time there's johnson welker jerry rice marvin harrison brandon marshall reggie wayne have done it four times marshall with a chance to join that select group and just like most passing records that are being set recently that would be a temporary record i'm sure i think you're right all these numbers are going down just the way that nfl offenses have changed dynamic nature job over the middle makes the connection to the rookie out of yukon ryan griffin working with matt schaub this week said it's been solid he worked mostly with case keenum and tj yates prior [Music] and for griffin an opportunity here he told us he has to improve his blocking to be in every down tight end he had a good block on that chip on von miller and in those six catches last week new hampshire native sixth round draft pick third and six now for the texans job timing route over the shoulder johnson can't haul it in he had harris beat but schaub unable to make the connection it's fourth down really frustrating this ball was going to be incomplete if he had been able to make the catch because the ball just drifted on job right off the fingertips but you can see how far out of bounds johnson comes down an opportunity missed there by the texans so this will be a 45-yard attempt for randy bullock in his second year at a texas a m lou grosso award winner in 2011 nine missed field goals this season that's the most in the nfl lechler will hold it john weeks will snap it texans looking for the tie 45-yard field goal attempt bullock and he knocks it through we're knotted up at three apiece a smile for wade phillips the 33-yard pass play to andre johnson 100th catch of the season for johnson bullock on the kickoff trending holiday moves forward from the five holiday to the outside holiday dragged down just across the 35 by tarpinian the backup linebacker now peyton manning nine of 13 103 yards so far and really doing a great job of distributing the ball around cargo with that catch six different receivers for those nine completions and we've got an injured bronco down after that kickoff return denver the word is von miller out for the rest of the game with a knee injury so a big hit to the broncos defense manning throws caldwell is hit right away kareem jackson was all over it now valos will take a walk to the denver locker room a great play by kareem jackson the four-year veteran he just exploded on caldwell there decker misses the block results in a one-yard loss so second and 11 now for denver 3-3 game the broncos at 11-3 the texans at 2 and 12. pass out to moreno catch and run for no sean moreno what a season he's put together shiloh ko going down low to bring him down boy and eric decker is down and jonathan joseph is down decker holding his right knee was in on the pass protection you're on the run got to make a tackle when you're out in space for the texans but uh incredible the amount of injuries here already in just the first quarter joseph is up and jogging decker is on his back they will help decker to his feet but he's gonna need assistance brandon harris will slot in for joseph who immediately takes off his shoe and good sign that decker is able to put some pressure on that right leg there's whitney merciless coming over here number 53 and they just banged knees right knees if both players collided and they're going to be checking that out on the sidelines now joseph with his shoe off so moreno the catch for 17 yards into houston territory [Applause] give it to moreno up in the middle brought down by brooks reed and jared crick they are evaluating steve balos for a concussion three yard pickup talking to john fox about uh no sean he said that maturity has really been his biggest factor you know he could have been thomas did a great job of turning kareem jackson inside out on this route once you have a defensive back turn like that it's all over safety late coming over schweringer the rookie and manning with a made contact helmet to helmet there so why the call well a defenseless receiver unnecessary roughness they must have determined that there's no way that greg jones could protect himself from the big first man there as kareem has got to get his head gear back in order one yard game and joseph leaving to the houston locker room and joseph is the best defensive back for the texans they only have six interceptions all year he's got three of them they have forced only 10 turnovers this season that's a minus 15 differential job is sacked sylvester williams he got one last week and he puts another sack on the board this week and it's a big one because it happens on third down bringing up third down so that sets up a really difficult situation here let's check out sylvester williams watch the as he's going to outrun the broncos to the wide side of the field and then he picks up the picket line tremendous return by keyshawn martin fourth round draft pick last year out of michigan state [Applause] johnson with a spin move just across the 20-yard line for dennis johnson brings toughness physical runner at five foot seven 193 pounds and he fits this offense very well it's a one cut and go type of offense and he says his strengths are his height or lack thereof he's only five foot seven but he's very powerful in the lower body harry and foster back surgery on ir and ben tate broken field goals and what could have been touchdowns for denver that changed the game yeah third downs have really been key for the texan defense keeping manning just converting one out of five here in the guys are strong they're athletic they worked out pretty well the season craters 20 of 21 on the year that's exactly what manning's thinking about getting him in range [Music] manic time ticking down manning throws he fits it in there catches made by julius thomas with 11 seconds left into houston territory 23 yards and a timeout call the big body of julius thomas he's screened off eddie pleasant much at the end of this one pleasant's trying to get around him to make a play on the ball but six five 250 pounds for her basketball player boxing out eddie pleasant and you love the way that thomas described what his football acumen has been he said it's like learning math backwards going from calculus to trigonometry to geometry to algebra in the wrong order because so much was put on him as a young player well 11 seconds left they know that they've got a weapon in freighter no timeouts remaining manic looking towards the sideline and will jacob tammy out of bounds with five seconds left that's really a smart combination on that pass route because julius thomas was on that side he drew two defensive backs to him that left tammy all alone on the sidelines so an eight-yard gain manning in the broncos offense takes care of business to give prater a legitimate opportunity here peyton manning 296 yards through the air in the first half on 23 of 32 and a touchdown 44-yard attempt for the seven-year veteran matt frater kolk to hold it crater leans into it line drive he's got enough trader converts and denver hits the locker room with a 16-6 lead over the houston texans matt prater brilliant season season for him 2004 and you can see why john fox is so happy about his defense talked about them being consistent for 60 minutes well the first 30 minutes gone very well so peyton manning is 48th touchdown he is over 5 000 for the first time in his career bullet kicking it off the verge of passing drew brees and maybe even tom brady in this game today and you look down the road whether the broncos will be playing for anything next week is yet to be determined but uh he's got a real good shot at setting the all-time record he is 369 yards away from drew brees in the ultimate former denver bronco who had a real impact in their game last year just wanted to do his ask matt shaw about that piece of beer he lost that's right he was the one that delivered the big hit on shop over this style of offense today schaub is missed on his last five passes he's now 7-15 for just 66 yards chop looking downfield flushed out and hits keyshawn martin short of the first down and that's a big question moving forward for schaub he signed big money extension four years 62 million dollars looks like he's not going to be the quarterback in houston there are lots of jobs around the nfl the question is whether or not matt shop fits in for a starting job somewhere else our group asked him about it he said i don't really think beyond what's right in front of me right now can't look beyond it your focus shifts and then you won't be prepared or ready for the task at hand he said all that stuff will handle itself down the road third and three open man he drops it in the bucket to ryan griffin big gain down the sideline for the tight end griffin and it's 40 yards yeah got to be a busted coverage here by the broncos you see the blitz coming right there by trevathan and then adams gets confused as to who his man is and griffin goes down the sidelines for a huge gain career long of 40 yards that's something john fox talked about defensively he believes they're capable of playing a lot better haven't put 60 minutes together on defense there have been breakdowns game in game out busted coverage against san diego and the keenan allen touchdowns give it to johnson and nowhere to go they were ready for him paris lenin read it perfectly well matt shaw he's dealt with a lot this season including an injury against saint louis that turned out to be his last start before keenum got the opportunity and here in houston it hasn't been pretty fans pretty consistently it's done good work for the texans through the years second and nine job incomplete deandre hopkins the intended target and you know if you play long enough in the nfl as a quarterback you're gonna have moments when your home team boos you what is bad is when you're injured and the home team crowd has come out in the second half they look very flat defensively and offensively they weren't much better either del rio certainly familiar with the houston texans after a nine-year stint as the head coach of the jacksonville jaguars playing in the same division ten point lead for denver houston threatening on a second and eight play fake chop end zone oh drop ball andre johnson unable to secure it he had a couple of drops last week but this one's really going to hurt because he does a great job with a post route right there puts his foot in the ground beats tony carter fine throw by job and a flat out drop by the great johnson [Applause] andre johnson that catch would have put him in 14th place on the career receptions list passing tori holt and it would have brought houston a little bit closer on the scoreboard third and eight out of trouble job throws touchdown keyshawn martin on the receiving end 15 yards well a couple of things happen here schaub does a great job of buying extra time and so does keyshawn martin as he searched the back of the end zone watch martin right here as shaw rolls out here he's going to work all the way to the back of the end zone [Applause] and all that extra time and what a perfect throw extra point from randy bullock capping off a nine play 74 yard drive it took just over three minutes texans moving down the field impressively to cut it to three after suzanne smith and the rest of our crew here in houston randy bullock kicking it off to trended holiday and holiday hit at the 22-yard line well matt shot showing what a competitor is just after the drop by andre johnson buying all this time on a rollout that was not designed he just got out of the pocket and he finds keyshawn martin for his second touchdown catch of the year but that's called bouncing back after a huge disappointment when he hit andre johnson wide open in the back of the end zone and he dropped the ball and the biggest battle on that play came from the two fans fighting for the football that martin awarded in the front row on first and ten now for denver the lead is down to three manning low throw incomplete demarius thomas the intended receiver for the that point in the second half they were so flat they weren't doing anything offensively defensively the texans were having their way that one interception then two plays later manning throws a touchdown pass and uh broncos are back to their normal dominant style and a huge lift for this denver team it came on the defensive side of the ball which has been a huge question mark for the broncos moving towards the playoffs as grimes takes it across the 15-yard line and the texans will put looks like houston is going to lose its 13th straight game kareem is being helped and he's taken the long the all-time single season passing yards record added to moreno yeah it's interesting now if the broncos decide to keep going for this record for peyton manning he may not play next week because of the buy so let's see how john fox feels about manning getting the record well we talked to manning about it and he answered it the way that you would expect in a classy manner he says he has a great appreciation for the history of the game if he were to break it he believes it will only be temporary as decker is unable to catch it kareem jackson in coverage manning talked a great length about the 04 chase how special that was for him growing up a dan marino fan mourinho held the record since 1984 so it's a record that held up for 20 years and he said besides his dad archie mourinho was really julius thomas takes the hit and a penalty marker down as kale was there defensively but you know there's a hat off on one of the officials so thomas may have gone out of bounds and been the first to come back and touch the ball so we may have offsetting penalties here there's a defensive hit though by k.o but once an official takes his hat off that signifies the receiver went out of bounds and then he threw a flag when the receiver touched the ball first there were two fouls on the play by the defense pass interference defense number 35 there was also personal foul unnecessary roughness number 31 a hit to a defenseless receiver by rule both of those penalties are enforced in this situation the personal file will be added on to the spot of the uh fair catch so to pass interference now this is going to be huge yardage so the reason the official threw his hat and the flag is because he threw two penalties one was uh the hat signified the personal foul penalty on ko coming over and just drilling thomas so now they just have to sort out the yardage here the personal foul was by a different player only one will be enforced to pass interference foul first down a good explanation from the veteran referee hockey lee they placed the football at the 25-yard line and now peyton manning is looking for the all-time mark by himself first and ten for the broncos from the 25. manning in the nfl after playing four years of college basketball in portland state and he is part of this wave of offense in denver he got thrown into it and he's handled himself quite well and how's that uh football acumen doing for it's working it's mathematics backwards that's the way i took it but i never got a touchdown pass from peyton manning [Music] julius thomas on the receiving end of the record
