[Music] [Music] Detroit Michigan [Applause] Home Run Derby we have eight players representing eight different countries tonight so give him a big chondroitin representatives whele six straight 2020 season his second straight all-star game the right fielder from the Philadelphia Phillies Bobby Abreu representing Canada - home of Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins last year's National League Rookie of the Year from the Little League World Series to the Pittsburgh Pirates in left field to the all-star game please welcome Jason representing Panama the home of Hall of Famer Rod Carew he lit him up for the White Sox now he's doing just that for the Milwaukee Brewers is 76 RBIs lead the American League he hit his first at-bat in the major leagues was a home run what do we see tonight from left fielder carlos lee representing south korea he played on their junior national team a weekend in los angeles this young man will never forget it three homers in a game from the LA Dodgers first baseman he's up choice and now representing Puerto Rico home Apolo favors Roberto Clemente than our Lando Cepeda a 12-time all-star 11 backlogs MVP will go down as one of the greatest catchers ever to play from your Detroit Tigers even Birds Rodriguez [Applause] from the United States a young man born in Maryland came into his own last year with 38 home runs this year he leads the American League with 25 dingers first baseman from the Texas Rangers mark yellow waves of Bashara [Applause] from the Dominican Republic the home of Hall of Famer Juan Marichal how many game-winning home runs can you have in the ALDS against the Atoll in the ALCS against the Yankees he homered in last year's all-star game from the world champion Boston Red Sox Big Papi David Ortiz representing the Netherlands from the island in the Caribbean Curacao he's just 28 and already closing in on 300 home runs he patrols centerfield with the grace of a gazelle and the speed of a cheetah tied with a major league lead in homers of the break with 27 from the Atlanta Braves Andrew Joel well the rules of this if this is your first time they've been pretty much tweaked the last couple of years to get to round one every player gets ten outs now and out is any swing that it's not a home run a line drive off the wall or a pop up behind the plate or a miss it's the same thing it's all in out walls obviously that our homers that they keep on going so the top four home run totals advanced will explain the tiebreakers if needed now round so we got four players the home runs do not carry over it either the round to the next one each player again gets ten outs and the top to advance to the championship round where you clean the slate is started again everybody gets ten outs they'll be very tired but the most home runs in the final is the champion now left field is 345 dead center is 420 right center 365 right field 3:30 Bobby the brave will be first up this year for the Philadelphia Phillies and started out awfully but have made some sort of a run good everybody is in it in that torrid NL East he should retire right now Bobby Abreu with affiliate [Music] he's only got three outs six homers thus far this one is straight and it just almost straight to blue Bobby Abreu with the [Applause] make them out [Applause] I just love that a Detroit crowd is going all out for a Philly player didn't happen in hockey Joe [Applause] and a flag from Venezuela at both sides of the plate [Applause] [Music] Johan Santana Shelvin Mora his fellow-countrymen from Panama the flags are out for Venezuela the flags are out you know they record for a Venezuelan born player home run [Applause] [Music] because going to say Andres Galarraga has 399 Abreu might pass him tonight 17 homers Bobby Abreu it's 30 last year 31 a few years ago [Applause] 18 home runs [Music] I'd like he's second up in this contest by the way he has 18 and the first three and a half months of the season it's got 18 tonight Jason Bay is up next I'd hate to be the one to follow and this is how he won't have his mic and especially been right-handed this might be good this is going to I don't believe this Joe well I think it actually shows not so much as power but that he has such good contact he makes it he's making great contact six in a row vertebrae I mean even as a line drive we hit hard his the Phillies got him back in it November of 97 in the trades with Tampa Bay right over that the one time shortstop Kevin night stocker man Abreu is stocking the Twilight I could tell you that well I could Alan Trammell says that he's only seen one ball hitting the upper deck even doing batting practice and that was Ryan Klesko [Applause] proud of it you can't carry the hope I know that's the bad boy I don't think anyone's told her now it is the century 21 home run derby it would only be fitting to come up with one when he won yeah all right but then it with 21-gun salute and take a seat this is going to straight sinner [Music] [Applause] there he goes century 21 and that's what he's got and with her logic it it too hard my mother loved it he broke the bat oh that's like Robert Redford in the natural okay I can't lose that back special back [Music] seven of his home runs have blonde 450 feet or more now with a rosin bag to new lumber well no he's boarded bad news out I see he has Jason BAE's bat now he said I can do it with any back well no Jason Shantae what put some homers here's Jimmy Jimmy Rollins is teammate with the Phillies the shortstop well this one I think tap it and they can hear it 21 of Omar and yet he's been patient enough this one to right-center field back in third place went back back 22 I pass Hank Aaron tonight so it's not just one back we call that no I've never seen anything like this well no one has in Home Run Derby this one is too old I think so much back back back at all yeah [Applause] there's always someone that's filled the show and this is what we're looking for you just don't anticipate it coming on the first round but Joe if you add up the lengths of all the home runs has 10,000 feet chopped too there's the other way [Applause] Wow oh he'll have a long rest at least yeah that's true yes he's the leadoff batter [Applause] I've been hitting all those homers from the leadoff spot Joe oh now we're going to go to every field left-center field back it goes not quite and now the gold ball is it it's when you're down to the last out here comes the gold ball and every home run hit with a go baseball and play with generate $21,000 for charity recipients like Boys and Girls Club of America [Applause] those Easter Seals official with charity of central 41 by the way Ramon Henderson deserves a raise the pigeons yep [Applause] I mean I don't believe we've just seen this 24 home runs [Applause] this is the centerfield straightaway does it have it out No [Applause] we have never seen a performance like this hit a home run [Applause] 17 minutes I mean think about his home brothers that [Applause] [Music] lyrically with the Chicago Cubs just joined us how you guys doing hi Gert how are you good good the freight starting congratulations on the all-star selection how you feeling I feel good you know took a few days off had some information in my shoulder but I took a few days off and it's been a lot better it's all fall into place for you this year not that you haven't been a big producer before but why homers RBIs and average you know it's just kind of cooked into one win this season I felt I've improved the last few years but uh you know this year I got off to a good start normally everyone they are kind of tough on me but this year I felt good in spring and it carried over into the season I'll talk to Jason a little bit use a little nervous hitter I think could have been nervous too no doubt about it does that get him off the schnide so I said early as always the first was always the toughest now and obviously Abreu got his right away and just continues from their vocation babe good-looking player obviously rookie here a year ago just one get theirs Hey the pressure starts to build when you don't get one right away that's the problem he's was a member of a Little League World Series team in Canada in 1990 so he's the first Little League World Series player to be a rookie of the year now here he is all the way the all-star his sister Laura was a pitcher on the 2004 Canadian Olympic softball so very good genes Jason just wants to get off the schneid here gets under that one go boys to left sitter almost well I mean I'm sure the pressures starting to mount but maybe next year he can come over here with us with Mike Piazza Dean had a pretty good career yeah just ground balls story and next year he was over here working with us maybe that's the trick though that guy has put up some great seasons yeah come on Jason get one is getting one you're right so handy the Milwaukee Brewers in representing the country of Panama his Carlos Lee better chance to say hello well this one's going to scatter two guys over here somebody better wake up [Music] so Carlos Lee with 76 RBIs which is the most in the league and the National League 22 home runs Carlos in a trade that helped both teams and both are all-stars that's rated for Scott Podsednik both their all-stars with their new teams this year Joe I talked to a Kenny Williams of Chicago White Sox GM and he said he told the Brewers when he made the trade that they were getting an all-star and Carlos Lee he wants and why not why it would seem that he's playing drink there's one this ball a lion back back back back [Applause] so Carlos Lee first all-star game for him owns a ranch in Panama with 6,000 head of cattle 31 homers last year now in homers the year before with the White Sox he was the first white shot here's another team it's been around forever Joe like the Detroit Tigers and he was the first white sock to ever hit a home run in his first major league at-bat half in may 7 1999 against Tom Candiotti of Oakland [Music] that's a long way out by the flagpole [Music] it's interesting he's a much bigger player than Abreu but Abreu was hitting more high fly balls he's hitting more line drive home run than the fly ball there's the fly ball it made it made it in the pen [Music] so I mean the harnessed think that the players is not I realized with you I don't need 24 home right exactly I just need to beat the zero that baby but I'll get you started yeah you know what to chase shell empathy came tomorrow night you know as funny as I was watching Reggie Jackson who's here and he's gonna join us later I watched reg and I should think Reggie was pretty big player Reggie small guess he is compared to all these guys on me out but Rodriguez all the other guys are bigger than Reggie oh that falls down the line back back back back god you'll get a break down the line like that Joe that'll that'll get in the tracks well some of these big hitters right-handers I mean even though the ball doesn't carry well they're not hitting scrapers anyway they're gonna hit them deep into the bleachers out there that gets under that one to centerfield and that'll bring the shag crew over so five outs halfway through and of course it's great to see the guy fall oh man yeah back back back back to that said to us at Thresh hold on in countryman to Mariano Rivera Panama rooting for Carlos that will have the proverbial hair on it [Music] right down the line [Music] [Applause] you know what's good when he hits the ball down the line it's not hooking which means he's getting good extension with his front arm that ball is not cooking otherwise it would go far Carlos Lee started to amass a pretty good total he's got six course no totals gonna seem good compared to Bobby Abreu twenty four out of the gate maybe seen funny but because the lot that he's missing he's late on them I think he's trying to muscle up and he's getting a little late on him because even though the guy's only throwing fire 85 miles an hour and they're used to looking at 90 plus he's late on the fly balls that he's sitting and pop up it's not read like that that was the fastest one to go out tonight now she hit a couple now you're more patient a plate - right well you relaxed a little bit and everything seems to fall in place I lost lead with an eighth spot open stance most most guys that hit wouldn't open sans' pretty much pool hitters the only guy that did that wasn't really a pull hitter was Andres the big cat Galarraga he hit from an open stance but he really didn't pull the ball all that much he was left Center to right center but most other players are more cool hitters when they set start from an open stance and one of the reasons to that is it lets him get their hips out of the way quicker [Applause] eight homers eight outs for Carlos Lea the Brewers Carlos says rich Donnelly familiar yeah weird name and face on jim leyland staff Pittsburgh and Florida returned the staff at Ned Yost in Milwaukee and now of course with this he's up joi up next the gold ball comes in you can purchase your own limited edition commemorative gold ball identical to what we're using here tonight at the century 21 Omar Derby on mlb.com a portion of the proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the Easter Seals as will every home run hit with the gold ball like that one so 21 thousand dollars to charity just like that and that's great [Music] so nine homers nine outs oh that flawless back back back back back back back back and Kalamazoo so another $21,000 for charity so much for you know you can't hit it out of here I mean we already have two in double-figures yeah three not only that I mean the right-handed hitters are the ones it's difficult 461 feet last one that's his longest one and is that have enough to get out of left-center field back back yes sir 11 for Carlos Lee so Carlos coming out of the gates in his first all-star appearances first home run derby with 11 didn't get that one [Music] by Carlos Lee he stopped showing the Diamonds coming up with joining us Paul a favor one of the great homerun hitters of all time one of the great clutch homerun hitters of all time and that would be Reggie Jackson hi reg thank you sir 1971 in Detroit this one home run we're still talking that's a real home run that's a real one here it's the all-star game off doc Ellis you remember like it was yesterday orig I wish it was yesterday I read said it was still going up when it hit that standard it was still going up it did life standard the light standard got in the way Joe but it wouldn't have got in the way it'd still be rope not only did you homer in that game but all the runs came on homers at the American League 164 Frank Robinson and Harmon Killebrew hit him for the American League Hank Aaron Johnny Bench Roberto Clemente for the National League the big picture there is six homers hit by six Hall affair there we go joy gets one he got one I could have been hit I could have hit one hit one good you can hit more than one even today oh now this way up there to Center against that ball kept carrying for the big fellow South Korea no he's got a little lift in his swing though and that's hard to continue Abreu when he was in there it was just an easy movie looked like he could have hit home runs all day it was wasn't gonna get tired it just had a groove and he was just really smooth I think he's going to come back and hit some more and he was hitting solidly the resident was the real key I think he was hitting it right on this sweet part of the bat Reggie's talked about being a young man joining though they all start so guys like maize and Aaron and mantle and those guys when this one goes deep to right back back back back in its way back so choice starting to starting to feel it feel it up you look around the room for the first timer Channel Joe I could ask you the same question all these guys the greatest thing yeah yeah for a new team I what am I doing here I did I was so excited Willie Mays Henry Aaron and Roberto Clemente who people had talked about to be some of the greatest players that ever lived were in the same outfield and that was a big deal yeah the homerun and I hit that night that did you know hit off the transformer and it was a big deal that Willie Mays had picked it up as VSOP hits number four right it was a big deal that Mays had picked it up and threw it into me back in our dugout because he was my Island and when the game was over I stood around I mean I stayed after the game Gibson was there Mary Shaw was there to be super Steve Carlton you name it the star was there out Kaline means unbelievable look at that one so he sat to what we're talking about the memories of this 71 all-star game all of a sudden five of the last seven he went on a little run you know weeks I'm amazed Chris and Joe how big the people are I just missed that before you came here Reggie I said you know Reggie was considered you know pretty big guy in his day I said when you stood up against some of these guys you look like exactly yeah first looked like mutton Jeff yeah I was telling I just we just mentioned it on the air I was standing next to Derek Lee he's about six five eight rod six four and then Cabrero Wladimir rarest stands next to Vladimir and Vlad he's bigger than he is but I tell you what Cabrera was standing there with David Ortiz and he was bigger than our team's Oh almost baseball truly international he did a good job he's not an all-star but he said he wanted to come and represent his country and he did well we got in the field a little bit at five home run so punch Rodriguez and I was looking at this and there have been five Puerto Rican players in the history of baseball to win the Most Valuable Player Award Juan Gonzales won twice Roberto Clemente Orlando Cepeda Yvan Rodriguez Juan Gonzales and Willie Hernandez wanted for the Tigers here as a relief pitcher those first two names are pretty significant Clementi Cepeda famed in the Hall of Fame and I think Yvonne Rodriguez will end up there is always been injured a lot last couple of years but he was definitely on pace [Applause] [Applause] my longshot Joe and it's a long when I got Barlow's remember I took Carlos is my long shot long Carlos Lee pudges mom was a schoolteacher became a principal back at Puerto Rico down the line is at stake [Music] dad was an electrician and how about the day that he I mean I remember like it was yesterday his puhd since it back to left-center field my friend back back back back god he was due to be married between games of a doubleheader on June 20th with his wife Maribel June 20 1991 at drillers stadium okay in the minor Tulsa all at Falls [Applause] you're John Green said you can't walk up to the big leagues I'm supposed to get married Tom dreesen you can wait a day no problems had no they had a civil he was supposed to get married that night between a doubleheader that it's civil ceremony 8 a.m. he got on a plane to Chicago to Comiskey Park had a base hit in the ninth inning got married in the morning had a hit at night my lunch at Joe well is looking better and better all you gonna do is be in the top drawer right three in a row for punch that one one for 40 and I'm enough lift there that we talk about it every time you and I have punch in it in a game or situation and you were teammate to one of the greatest catchers many feel the greatest Johnny Bench the punch what he's done behind the plate I mean he ranks right there we got it compared to Johnny Bench I think Johnny Bench is the greatest catcher ever and Rodriguez compares favorably to him because they're both so quick behind the plate was unbelievable how quickly they can get the quick quickly Johnny could get the ball to second base and Pudge Rodriguez is very simple they have great footwork so he's the only guy that I've ever been paired to Johnny Bench from my days about the only one that you could that was Derek his son Derek watching and a hard to have it carry there so seven outs now so much [Applause] Jericho come on dad [Applause] [Music] I'm watching Kevon he hasn't really changed his hitting style he is actually going back through the middle and then he reacts to the ball inside which is the way that he hits most of his home runs he reacts on that inside pitch like that since it way back to left-center field back back back back back back his six well that puts him past new stop joy yep and the Puerto Rican flag game waved down the first base line [Applause] [Music] [Applause] how about the man is this one have enough mustard sends it way back to left field almost about the postseason that he had in 93 to the Florida Marlin [Applause] and when I talk to Kaline today he was telling me that he thinks that you're going to see a different Tigers team the second half because they're all getting healthy now and they also have Magglio ordóñez so the gold ball with one out to go the gold ball have luck for PUD Texas at 99 and he sent this one all the way to East Lansing till seven homers for putz can you write Joe that's Borden the hands all the first half of the season at 7 though may put him in the driver's seat [Applause] [Music] that'll bring up the United States is representative and a good look at 25 year-old first baseman Mark Teixeira from the Texas Rangers the first round pick the fifth overall pick of the Rangers in 2001 and here he is in the all-star game he's just opened it put on a good show hit thirty eight homers 112 RBIs a year ago Joe at the break he leads the American League with 25 home runs and he was my pick along with David Orr - ok well he's a switch hitter and you can see that all 25 of his homers this year have come left and this is the left-hand hitters ballpark now there wasn't a tough decision but he's got to get on the groove here yeah again now it's not so much that he can't hit off it's Dale Swain one of the red sock coaches the third base third-base coach I should say suing your young guy a little early to bring your own coach yeah right [Music] and I was looking at you know this since this is international flavor tonight I was looking at Hall of Fame players who are born outside of the United States and at this point there's only seven and I guarantee a lot more because there are a lot more great players now in the major leagues and there was years ago Luis Aparicio from Venezuela Rod Carew from Panama Orlando Cepeda from Puerto Rico Clemente Roberto Clemente from Puerto Rico Ferguson genius from Canada Juan Marichal from Dominicans and poison rays from Cuba now to share on the board with his first home run bride of Mount st. Joseph's High School in Baltimore played ball account at that Georgia Tech college ball this one goes way Maggie now he starts to get in the groove he won the Dick Howser trophy of the college player of the year in 2000 and there are the players who were born outside of the United States that are in the Hall of Fame that's great list right there yeah and again I you know with the makeup of the game today they're gonna be a lot more players they were born outside of the United States and Hall of Fame in the next you know eight to ten years fans are the photons down the line there's a guy that's hit a few home runs and Manny Ramirez starting to warm up for the Red Sox the world champion Boston in education under bone was high well it's hard to relax I mean again in your first one that's why Bobby Abreu performers contests here he's got to make the adjustment here with the gold ball in which means you're down to one out Mark Teixeira became only the second Ranger last year to hit for a cycle the first one of our favorite nicknames Oh to be young again McDowell yeah Oh Duvall and so Mark Teixeira he's hoping to put on a good show got a good smile this is North America things not working Jason Varitek the catcher for the Boston Red Sox congratulations on last year and on being an all-star tech thank you very much how about the show up radon unbelievable he made it look like it's too easy to get the ball to this part we're about to see David Ortiz how would you pitch him you don't know you don't have never mind I stopped myself the David's getting some help going up and you know he's gonna light up how is he in the clubhouse every day David's phenomenal he's become you know work his way and I say worked his way into being one of the premier clutch hitters in the game and he's worked his way to do that and he's a big strong guy that can handle both lefties and righties I think that's the most underrated part of his game is how he handles the pitching even when he gets behind an account you know they can't just put him away and there's I've watched him against some of the best left-hander than the and he still handles them very well he said he's become so fundamentally sound there that in this swing is mechanics and he's you learn to utilize his strength [Music] [Applause] [Music] look at this did [Music] up to the Upper Peninsula to get out a smile [Music] [Music] [Applause] this Bobby a brain started with 24 home runs he's got his best home run swing [Applause] the best in one single round before Abreu was 15 by - ha - last year who's put the flag of the Dominican right out there for Big Papi to see [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] possible [Applause] with the gold ball 21,000 bucks to charities the Boys and Girls Club and more every home run hit with a gold ball 472 C these are Finley he knocks the Ted Williams number down and he he turns it off sometimes hopefully these are long enough to get out of India [Applause] so 16 for David Ortiz the second best single round performance we've ever seen in the history of this century 21 home run derby this one is down the line back back back back the Penske Colwood it's the Kaline Paul how about this nine of the last ten is he getting the groover what I'm gonna try dead center now so 17 home runs for David Ortiz now you get up [Applause] [Applause] last time last time you got a chance you know got him out so he found himself a newbie Pedro Andruw Jones representing the Netherlands the island of yourself of willemstad curacao still a Dutch colony I guess the question is do you have any nor TV still left for me do you have anybody said David Ortiz oh but you can't take the guy that I chose you chose you hitting me - first you go easy it took - yeah you should have gone well next time I will actually have it up here just being nice well my long shot was punch and he certainly didn't disappoint me now I don't know that Andrew Jones is going to hit at least David needs or almost did see now there's three that was the Long's I thought that boy I did that ball I thought would carry Joe had a little topspin on it so I Aunt Ruth whoo yeah how about the way he when you see Jimmy Edmonds right team all-star in centerfield you know what one's gonna play five innings one gonna play four yeah I know you don't need to be the left to right field or two you know you're not gonna notice a lot of different right that's what I mean did they go get those look great just love watching them play Andrews fourth all-star selection you know I've always said that I thought Willie Mays the greatest centerfielder than I ever saw and that's because I saw more of him than I did anybody else and Bobby Cox says that he thinks that Andruw Jones at the best centerfielder he's ever seen so he sees a lot of Andruw Jones so it works if you see a guy a lot and that one got over there for a home run Andrews a seven-time Gold Glove winner you know he's already he's only 28 okay he's the fifth all-time home run hitter and Braves franchise history I don't mean Atlanta man I mean wow I mean Boston Milwaukee and Atlanta you know it's a franchise with Hank Aaron and any man any Matthew they've had something joe adcock oh hell no he's ahead of Joel yeah back back back back in thought he's in the group now Aaron Matthews Dale Murphy Chipper Jones a dancer he's got 277 lifetime home runs Joe he's only 28 we don't think of him I know he's hit 30 several times but you still don't think of him as as a big home run hitter you know well you know what it is he got such a great start as a teenager remember against the Yankees in the World Series he was hitting home runs yes so people have always felt like he's never reached his potential you know because they thought he's going to be unbelievable at when he did that but I think he's had a great career and he's been a great blow why he was the youngest to ever hit a postseason home run and he hit the 2 in his first two World Series at-bats eight on this World Series player before was Mickey Mantle and Andrew did it at 19 years old so there's Abreu in the cage knowing that he's gonna hit next well I guess he wasn't tired well now he's got to warm up he's been sitting for 45 minutes is gonna be close no I guess not and actually Joe with all the home runs that we had with a brave with 24 and Artie's with 17 and oh by the way Carlos Lee 11 is usually a number two we brag about in the opening round it's also quite a long first round how about this one back back back back it's almost to the Caribbean well he's hitting big flies I fly balls that go out of here [Music] now this is interesting because on the bubble as the gold ball comes out sees Pudge Rodriguez if the outcomes before three more Omar's Pudge will move on the Detroit fans will be happy then Andrew was 27 this year decide for the most of the major leagues will not advance to the second round just have enough mustard to let the [Music] [Applause] oh my goodness good thing taking their life it would have went right through the tarp so Andrew hanging on that's a $21,000 charity called gold crowd knows with this means listen to that's it they're rooting friend jumps to make out but then we wouldn't lead us to make it out you know there weren't Regas so punch will move to the next round it's my longshot Joe yeah you're right it's hanging a remember none of these totals counts well my long shot was Carlos well I got two guys left I have Carlos Lee and our team so yeah we both can't now we have our four semi-finalists at the century 21 home runs Irby Bobby Abreu ran out of the gates with 24 David Ortiz with 17 both records in one round but we have the international format tonight that but in the home run derby that's kind of a dovetail into something you announced today they're gonna be 16 teams what's what's happening well it's a very exciting day for baseball the Players Association and Major League Baseball jointly announced today that in March we're going to have the World Baseball Classic it will really speed up the internationalization process of our sport the players are excited your work shining and mixed March I don't think people realize how big this is going to be I am Telling You they this will be huge for the internationalization of the sport speaking of which how huge is you can you stay with us while Bobby Abreu weather of course what if it's like his last that that'll be 17 minutes so don't go anywhere believable I'm glad to the state 24 homers 70 minutes of Bobby Abreu we do now in the second round the same thing with 10 a feather that was right on he went into the freezer for an hour and then he comes out it's thawed right away Wow he has what a performance yeah but I wanted to ask you a question about you're on the radio this morning as we hit some novel yeah this is usual for Bobby Abreu with the Phillies I guess the pleaser didn't hurt on your on the radio this morning and you had a comment about Kenny Rogers I'm gonna give us that here I sure do yeah I am as you know I've disciplined them to the tune of 20 games and fifty thousand dollar fine which although I know there's some people who really haven't done homework have been critical if you look in any sport for a similar offense that is kicking a photographer doing the thing it's it's the most serious penalty that has been imposed which I believe is correct he has a right under the labor agreement to take it and and appeal it and he helps and he right to do that when we hear the appeal is irrelevant because if the all-star game is not one of the games jokes so even if he was under suspension he was voted in and that's under the collective bargaining agreement you know I hear from time to time people will say well if Kennesaw Mountain Landis were alive Kennesaw Mountain Landis lived in a different era would know you and didn't know anything else and that just predict is the the collective bargaining agreement takes precedent even over my best interest Clause which is really omnipotent I mean it has awesome power but the fact of the matter is that once you sign a collective bargaining human all the things that you've agreed to have to stay in place and so the discipline procedures are there and they're merely following them the only thing that I and this is just me and obviously I didn't know you've explained it better than I expected but the question I have is you know when something happens this big on the field you know when you have a fight you know and you wait until the guy comes to New York and you have the hearing and appeal that's okay I'm just wondering this was all over the national broadcaster every week and it's still there and I guess my point is it's gonna continue to be there until you do have the appeal process and I just wonder you know if if it wouldn't be better for all of us to put things behind I want to do it as quickly as possible that no that's absolutely right it would not have affected the oil star game is for the rights I just articulated but you are right Joe we need to get behind us you know here we are I said having this remarkable year but and I nobody hates these what I call distractions more than I do and this is a distraction question about it yeah there's Kenny said he thought about it and here he is all-star late in his career now meanwhile Bobby Abreu was six outs and only two home runs six straight down a different subject bad joke very difficult to follow but he did it's almost impossible yeah incidentally I know that there were some people who said well the big sluggers aren't in it this was one of those but I must say I think David Ortiz in Bakke Abreu and that was my last point to go Jose even though I didn't agree with the format it has worked out very well let me just say we're all friends but we are a photographer just good yeah no no one yes yeah go ahead yeah let me just say the format this year is consistent with what I talked about earlier I mean we are going international the idea of players representing their countries the thing today at the press conference and I think you're seeing it out here ninety-two with the prayers carrying flags and think they're really Pelt every one of them said how happy they are to represent their country see that the same now he is afraid of trying to get back on the home run trail he did and he did that's the most ever in the Derby but he's not yet into the final round let's just add 227 last year and my brain now tries to go to dead center and the ball shaggers we're like and I grabbed him so the gold ball comes out I do I will let keep with the brave I got out of the question to ask you let's see how Bobby does you think he hits a couple here before the last you're gonna be the Swami now I can't take your spot okay but I'll say a hit at least one alright with you listen I've listened to every week I know your [Music] your courage commits once again the baseball Swami has spoken can I do your father do you want to come on in hey we bet everybody on I don't know I don't know where you've been I there's no well I'm gonna except I know you're Packer fan that's right Wisconsin I always ask me as long as Brett Favre is playing quarter as they have and I well I know that I think the great thing is you've mentioned all the problems we've gone through the last couple of years whatever that you know fans are coming out and more than ever before I think that's just fantastic Joe and you think about it and you know we we started this great ere he goes with the steroid shoe and everything else and the intensity of ballparks and I love the way the second half of the season is set up we have two great wild-card races the division races have tightened up we're going to have some great races right down to the end the winner and the early spring you instituted a policy okay Congress is obviously on the steroids has another thought in mind right then you in you suggested hey baseball should strengthen its policy but then again the players haven't concurred yet whose move is next players baseball's or we'll hear something from Congress where whose move is next as Abreu obviously has the moves at the plate God let me just go back to second if I can there we had a policy we put in in 2002 as you know Chris and it worked it was called week and so on and so forth and and yet it began to work the players association to their credit tightened it up in January there's no question in my mind the programmers working [Applause] Rayo finishes with six which amen welcome back to the home run derby meanwhile we have Carlos Lisa now all right you're the Swami that abraão we got Carlos Lee we got Pudge Rodriguez we got David Ortiz get the baseball slums you don't have to pick it's okay well I'll pick for you I've got Ortiz and Lee lets you guys with the show has you know I'm gonna let him have Abreu and Joe also had Aaron Mason room Joe I'm gonna join you because I would have taken Lee and our teams thank you see ya there's a long shot I mean well the one thing you got going for you there's 43,000 people who are everybody I thought that that would be a good 10-feet on every home run you were a little bit more of a run to hear that Joe and I yeah well it's good of you to join us gather this is this a great couple of days it's become everybody looks forward to it always happened and Mondays become Tuesday's the day ever but Monday is a you know this really is a celebration of our sport in the midst of a great year and it's just just sitting you're watching all this is fun and I I thank both of you you know I'm your faithful viewer all year long and I thank you for all you've done for our sport forward to many years yeah I hope so thank you thank you very much see like a pleasure thank you again congratulations on a great first half [Music] good job but the Commissioner is that he always Joey he just wants it to be fatal yeah well the baseball prize a salute of it I guess but that's the best thing about baseball so Carlos Lee here in the second round oh look at this thing to centerfield back back back it goes over all the flags so that's number three well that's my guy though I mean he's my guy here or til four guys had to pick the right book well I had to pick a right-hander on the left hand so your list includes women happy for me I like that wreath amazing there and I yeah I think I would have had a good I would had a winner there no I would have tried with Frank and Harmon okay [Music] did that go yes it did so Carlos Lee with four remember we wipe out the total into the first round and the highest two totals move on Bobby Abreu had sixes representing Venezuela Carlos Lee with poor thus far for Panama Pudge Rodriguez for Puerto Rico coming up and David Ortiz the Dominican Republic against as we said if you're looking back for the northern atmosphere or at least North America Mark Teixeira had won for the United States and Jason Bay had none for Canada so you got to go to warmer weather yeah that's the key rich Donnelly the pitcher from the Brewers staff and you know what seeing rich Donnelly out here and we were talking for a little while you know else was was around this Pudge Rodriguez gets ready know was was a great friend of National League manager Tony LaRussa yeah you know what did you see if Jim Leyland yeah good yes he did I am surprised that you know he's not managing a team it'll be managing by the end of the year well because I think you look at teams now I mean it's kind of this who win now mentality in most cases and he's the guy that knows how to win underachieving team that might want to scrap a manager they got a look at him don't think Hey look great Tony Lewis always said call him Murtagh for Danny Murtaugh they all found it through the Pirates they they beat the Yankees in 1960 on maz's home run so I said Murtagh he wheeled around there's only about three people calling me Reggie yeah not number six for Carlos Lee of the Brewers but I think you can tell that he's starting to feel it a little bit everybody gets a little tired in the second round and they're even more tired on the third round I was watching Bobby Abreu as well he was a little tired he's regrouped there toward the end five outs in a row here for lead [Music] [Applause] that one to left-center field the long way back it goes back back back and we talked earlier in the introduction which now seems like yesterday he mentioned his name before from Panama the great hitter one of the great hitters of well of all time that would be Rod Carew or the Hall of Famers in Panama yeah he could hit I mean he could really really hit I always thought Arak - I watched him play sometimes seemed like he just catched the ball on the bat and throw it wherever he wanted to go you know that was that we Willie Keeler in a word everything ain't yeah well Rod Carew could do that with the best of them I really thought he would and many of us did hit 400 well you know if he played in the last five years I think he would have hit four why do you say that well because I don't think the pitching was is consistent and five years ago as it is you know rush when he played damn Imam Carlos Lee gets tired at the end the Brewers in my field in his last so he ends up with [Applause] [Music] Pudge Rodriguez my longshot yeah you I'm actually pulling for you I guess well you have Aaron Rutten me said yes to punch which seven in the first round was the fourth and final man in if you will but it doesn't matter we wiped the slate clean and Kelleher doing the pitching [Music] Bud's trying to get untracked I told you the story of his married at 8:00 a.m. and had a base hit in the major leagues his first name at night in Chicago that's amazing I'd say what else amazing about putz because she came up you know like Andruw Jones it's a teenager of 19 years of age how about this show 91 when he was a rookie with Texas he caught 44 year-old Nolan Ryan so we hear we're seeing a guy play in the mid that one's to Dearborn you know what the things amaze me the most about fudge is that he was able to catch all of those games in Texas yeah and for people who haven't been there to be admitted here the heat you know just playing that every single day as a catcher just amazing to me that he caught so many games like not only and kept his stamina throughout the season able to hit over 300 his average season there was 300 323 batting average you know I mean that's that's amazing not only playing Joe how about just living yeah you're right yeah but you played in Houston at the began your career you know devastating I mean the heat is just eats at you all the time especially when you go on the field but trying to go a long way to right-center the fans not one about hit eight not only did he hit 323 average like 26 home runs in Texas all those years they figure if the fan reaches over and brings it into the crowd call it a homer it's all therby fans trying to help Pudge lost his beer look at this now look hey oh what a catch that was see that snow cold that's the long way to centerfield back it goes [Applause] took some part of the park to get it out of there off the upper greenery [Applause] 4:53 for fun who has two [Applause] he's building a baseball school and sports complex in the planning stages in his native Puerto Rico so there's somebody that certainly understands where he come from [Applause] and that wants to Kalamazoo [Music] for the first magic number as his son Derek Lujan is for does that what that means you at least tie Carlos Lee with Big Papi coming inside-out swing the right-center field ahead your long shot looking pretty good right [Applause] maybe like Giacomo and I won't be that much you know I'm the scum I don't take the chalk well he's tied Carlos Lee one more homer will put him in the second place or sure anything now this is the deepest part of the park does it have it out not quite what will assure him of not being eliminated is two more with six Barret [Applause] Oh [Applause] he's now past Carlos Lee who knows that his night is open well six would assure him a playoff berth well and he shredded bash off [Applause] he's going deeper and deeper here also one more census in the spot in the fireman five of his six homers show gone for 50 or more [Applause] mob hits under that one take the step out and relax a little one more home run where assure him he burst in the final [Applause] [Music] second round arches not die [Applause] patience ah killer killer so now the gold falls in the Jarrett Rodriguez Sam one more top bye pop [Applause] the final [Music] long shots there Giacomo they're ancient elements enough yeah right yeah he should he's turning to one anyway the gold ball a charity home run - everybody wins so Pudge Rodriguez will be in the finals 462 how about the distance Joe [Applause] to traverse city and that eliminates my wife my long shot Carlos Lee is eliminated now [Applause] that's alright because budgets in the final so now or to Rico with pudges in the finals and the Dominican Republic represented by David Ortiz make it weird Jason Varitek I was very analytical about David that he realizes power Ali to power Ali he's if you realize what kind of hitter he was and he didn't have to be the Poli how many of those home runs like the one against the Angels huh you know up to left field left field in the month or the same with yeah right well I think he's become maybe the best big-game hitter in the game right now I mean he just he can do it so now David Ortiz who had 17 an amazing first round did he hit too many Joe will see the dead center field that'll be an out Bobby Abreu open he began the night with a record with 24 home runs can he finished the night with an appearance in the finals depends on David in some ways it would be fair if he got in but that's not the way the rules are well he hits him like that a vanilla just a smooth swing and a routine 400-something foot home run one for Big Papi here in the semi someone went for 38 that's the center-field not quite the problem is when you start to tire a little bit as I said your bats a little late and you end up hitting the ball as a center in right center whereas the first time around when your bat is quick you pull the ball he's having trouble you know pulling it so far yeah that one elevate but we know that he can get out of tear when seen it we've seen it tonight Twitty at nine in a row it's a long wave you look at that from up top there request blimp there Joe long way in it especially dead center but it's not dead center at the Polo Grounds no 483 where the old Yankee Stadium 463 that one maybe 463 and way up there in right-center field and gone for Homer number two it's a Honda won at last year rooting for his country mate Dominika I hit upset cause he was late getting to that fit that was a good pitch to hit yeah inside he couldn't get to it readjust the gloves [Music] so the world champion Red Sox lager she have enough in the arsenal 21 homers this year 75 RBIs second only the teammate Manny Ramirez who has an 82 lead the league and the major how about he and Manny last year 40 homers 100 RBIs 300 the first pair of teammates let's see if this one gets out just missed first pair of teammates to get 40 100 300 since 1981 be Ruth L Gary I'm gonna ask you what those initials me character you had I took Garriga not all right yeah looking on the big poppy well we said it the first time around he's trying to keep the ball down because that's where he likes it and you can see he's having problems getting around on it that's the that's the big crops out that's Ron Jackson Papa Jack the hitting coach Matt Clemente who has come over and at a great first half inning starting role with the Red Sox hey Ron Jackson just trying to give him a couple of warning and getting up up and away right a little bit flying out is that what that is with that well I think what happens is you start there and then you start opening a little too quickly with your body that makes you bad bat drag actually instead of speeding it up well I agree with that he wanted to move his little girl back yeah not the boss yeah foul a ball off his might you know unless you need to get annoyed at somebody at this point right not at his daughter was with it just something to get yourself yeah and slower tease that that's truly big Pappy that's big Pappy's back down now that one is in the jet stream to right-center field back he goes way up there so home we're number three but he's excelled in late home runs Joe he got hot last time he needs a couple now so eight outs he needs at least three home runs or else Bobby Abreu will join Pudge Rodriguez in the finals well is this have enough Joe what do you think now he was late on it he was late on it you've called it all yeah and a little late on all just a little bit if we had our telestrator in our K zone we could show where he's actually contacting a bog district in this round compared to where he was contacting the ball in the first round but you can tell us anyway yeah it's only it's I mean it's only about three or four inches but it make it makes a big difference keep it for the home run derby you have to tell us tell us strength greater actually I'm better at that you and I do some windy out yeah now big Pappy with a long run well yeah so he had 17 in the first round but only three in the second round that's David Ortiz after what was one of the greatest single round performances we've seen second-most ever he's not gonna make it to the final the Tigers in Puerto Rico facing Bobby Abreu from the Phillies and Venezuela in the final Bobby Abreu Pudge Rodriguez now of course one fan will win $250,000 towards a home the century 21 an Edwin Molina of Long Pond Pennsylvania moving to Wesley Chapel Florida that's who Abreu was hitting for the latest trip actually to Florida so that he could be here to see then he may have be able to buy a home down there well you know what's interesting is we said 250,000 towards a home that used to buy your home and will show you punches as Bobby goes a long way to right-center but not quite Bobby Abreu Venezuela Pudge Rodriguez the hometown Tigers in Puerto Rico they're the ones and there is a brave Joe he hits his first one in the final patience three hours into this thing Joe I think you've showed a lot of patience as well me yeah I appreciate that you and I have learned to be patient our 16 years of baseball here at ESPN that was nice to visit with Reggie yeah commissioner Derick leave Jason Varitek Reggie will always be the straw that stirs any drink not just the Yankees the guys there's the Drake so brave with four outs just one homer he has the longest one of the night way back in round one one of his 24 home runs went 517 feet but you see he as well as late getting the Braille of the bat to the boss it's not so much you lose all the bat speed but what you're used to doing is hitting a ball at a certain point you know in the out in front of you and as the ball is moving there when you lose a little bat speed and get a little tired you cannot get the barrel of the bat there at the same time but it's hard to change where you're swinging because that's your zone so it's hard to change it to hit it here we don't set another car only one car we had one car that's it I would be motivated not to cut my luck I'd have that ticket right it would be the closest to the whole competition you're within a foot but somebody got a hold water right right now this one to right-center field back back back the prey is starting to find the range again Bobby 31 years of age his ninth season yes yeah oh yeah Bree you starting to fire down a couple of more operators three in a row now for poppy [Music] hate to make it out on a check swing right well Edwin Molina for a brave and that's wond Cervera from Hollywood Florida a carpenter moved ten years ago from left Cuba and came to the United States so this man has a chance $250,000 Torche all right does this have enough juice yeah here comes punch back from a brief couple of swings in the cage will not be happy that Bobby Abreu was starting to pull him out of here long drive to right center field back back back back back at that I send a nice SS what swag cool on [Music] 36 home runs by a brave tonight and it seems he's made the adjustment of starting his swing a little sooner to get to the ball out front he may not have known in his first home run derby you know to lay off after 24 homers Joe there's another one but he did know enough to bring Ramon Henderson from the Phillies to pitch to us he knew that [Music] now most guys would go wait a minute I've given up 37 home runs on one night I gotta get out of here 38 that's his that's his job what is your job how to serve up gopher balls right but that in your job description Bobby Abreu with a moment come on doing a heck of a job laying them in there four in a row has to stay up long enough [Applause] seven outs now those filly oh man this is absolutely tattooed back back back back gone those fillies have what it takes in a second [Applause] you know told me he'll come back really been a non-factor except for a brief little run with this injury but brave hits like this you need eight singles hitters and him [Applause] [Music] Bartolo Colon may they go by you got to go wants the picture that thing two outs left nine nine homers are going to be tough to beat in the finals Joe yes you're correct manney antic only two homers with four four or five ounces but since then nines gonna be awfully tough well he was able to make the adjustment to get the barrel out in front maybe we could see where he was making house not getting the barrel out there so what you I think what you have to do in the final round is you have to start your swing a little sooner to get to the point where you want to go it's like if nolan Ryan's the toy you have to start her a little quicker yeah like maybe if he's pitching on a Monday night started [Applause] double figures in the file the most we've ever seen in a final round close it but no one who are the best hitters in the game so some of the best program in the game in this contest so you know they can hit it out of any pros I mean look at this forty it's a hell of a season well tonight but he's not done long shot to right-center back it goes more Venezuelan flag waving Wow Wow Celts how to throw the first pitch knife it's the only one not hit out of the park the dead center yeah oh you just you just hope at this hour I mean that's late for these kids here comes the gold ball every home run hit with these gold balls worth $21,000 to charity Boys and Girls Club and the Easter Seals major league baseball in century 21 combining on those charities gets under this one but I tell you 11 in the finals is unbelievable 41 home runs probabiy Abreu he's exhausted [Applause] and where you fanclub which includes all the Venezuelan Billy players 41 homers go let that sink in and that's unreal unreal by Bobby Abreu with photo so Abreu with 41 homers on the night punch with 15 Joe but a very smart distribution of those 15 hence he remains my long shot this is going to be difficult and he knows Mick Kelleher to throw Pudge Rodriguez [Applause] great and that's what's important because you don't start pressing right away and as you get number two right away back back back back back back [Applause] [Music] done yet [Applause] pitch centerfield Oh [Applause] so just one out two homeruns big mountain to climb 17,500 65 feet of home run for a parade there we showed you this earlier can he win it in his home park I really think that Pudge Rodriguez coming here who does that stay up not quite running to the Tigers kind of signified to some other players that they're serious about winning here Joe Tigers are almost 500 under Ana Allen travel they're better [Applause] go on a center field [Music] [Applause] oh speaking of the manager of the Tigers there he is it's a great player for so many years here in Detroit Alan Trammell we can never forget Trammell and Whitaker they were as good as it got tiger exactly right we played together for so long DoublePlay combination now you started out well but now needs a hot spell a flame bomb is Bobby Abreu with five outs in a row by PUD [Applause] again to centerfield big ball ball molds for 22 dead center it's not where you want to go and everyone on their feet here in Detroit open for their catcher to hit a few quadrangle are all wrong there's one I said - that's what [Applause] three that daunting number is 11 by a brave [Applause] Oh does it stay fair just foul that's a tough out that is that what that one that that's a tough out at this stage of the game I was low [Music] [Applause] Venezuela none on the board yet but two outs away from being [Applause] number four block the plate here would do out the dope and now the dreaded gold ball was right there I was right there where the gold ball have a golden moment for seven look at everybody up everybody up now well this one is way back and left in his Ernie Harwell woodsy long [Applause] can't believe I win all this evening without mentioning the great Ernie Harwell it's around this weekend long gone good call for so many years of tigers [Applause] swift walk out I was I was looking at the guy that he's playing for he's trying to urge him on [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Wow gave it in Spanish but Bobby Abreu will be the winner thousand five century [Music] [Applause] you hit 41 home runs [Music]
