how perfect is this in the city where steel is molded from sweat and fire and pounded out by the tongue they have their own flames to ignite and power the wheelhouse into the sky the American part science parts of power of possibilities succeed in any walk of life and you [Applause] into the steel city tonight success is measured by how many baseball's you send it into the seats and that every homer they hit all of us [Music] the homerun Derby is next [Applause] to [Applause] baseball's new man but thousands watch consecutive games and shouting he also hits home runs he's got 17 he won this event two years ago shortstop Mykelti [Music] one of baseball's best curators barn I'm also able to excel at several positions this year first base from the National League champion Houston Astros 24 home runs Lance Berkman speaking of several positions chief Johnson soon this year third base for the Florida Marlins he's only 23 it's already his third all-star game 15 homers Miguel Cabrera twice he said over 40 home runs when he was with the Angels oh by the way he was MVP of the 2002 World Series now slugging him out for the Toronto Blue Jays 23 homers third baseman Troy and God's he has done everything right for the Mets since he got there that's for sure it only 23 one of the leaders of the team with the best record in the National League with 20 homers third baseman David Wright he was the MVP of last October's World Series proving when he's healthy he's one of the bests 25 homers at straight right fielder the world champion Chicago White Sox Jerry died he leads the majors with 31 homeruns so many of the minutes just fat with the game on the line [Applause] Boston Red Sox big Cathy David Ortiz last area was looking here in the National League even though he hardly played until July this year he's an all-star what's next for twenty eight homers at the break was the first baseman of the Philadelphia Phillies Ryan Howard I went the wrong way that's alright though we can do that it's an all-star game you can do that here's what the rules states we get ten outs swings that don't leave all right now it's the top four home run totals of the eight will advance round to the home runs will carry over from the first round so it's accumulative total from the berth to each player again gets ten outs and the top two home run totals will advance the championship round where the slate is wiped clean it is 0 of 0 right down the right-field line over the right-field wall which is what the 21 feet there it is the Allegheny River and the boats are out there just to kind of take a look if you hit it right down the line Harold it's I say only 456 feet into the water on a fly now the park opened in 2001 only Darrell Ward then with Houston has it like San Francisco wouldn't it although only one is gone in on the fly many of bounced in and so tonight we'll see how early and how often the Allegheny River maybe the it'll crest about a foot higher than news tonight well there's a couple of guys in this contest left-handed hitters Ryan Howard and David Ortiz of anybody in the big leagues if it's gonna get hit out there he's to a right on the list [Applause] and so Miguel Tejada is up as we said he wanted two years ago in Houston and here's and there's a very interesting guy on the mounted in there Harold yeah you know Ramon Henderson is the pitching coach last year you saw their display Abreu put on and so he's been recruited he's throwing the three guys tonight he's going to throw the Tejada he's got throw to David Ortiz and Ryan Howard who is his own player with the Phillies is sitting there going they're gonna wear him out there's a conspiracy so we've already got controversy before the first pitches thrown Howard is the last one to come up so Tejada taking his time and Henderson is now the designated pitcher of those who want to win this thing I guess me last year was unbelievable with twenty four in the first round for Bobby Abreu [Applause] I hate them I eat them again the rules any ball hit that does not go out of the park for a homer isn't out doesn't matter if it's a line shot off the wall doesn't matter if it's a base hit up the middle Tejada you're like that a foul ball that's enough well I find a nest in with Ramon you know they had the World Baseball Classic so David Ortiz the minute you got to hotter then on that same thing BP to these guys and so they said a little bit but I guess it doesn't matter that showed you how strong he is you know in that big in stature he's only about 510 but very strong gets under this one sends it to the same spot and left-center not quite hey what a thrill for the kids out there shagging fly balls well those are the kids what that pitch hit and run contest for Major League Baseball and one of the rewards they get to be in here the national champions they all get to come out and shag their home run dirt this will be a pop-up so this will be three outs but still you get ten outs so Carl what's your view from out in the euchre seat I'll tell you what I think the first observation is that foul ball went a mile and then the ball that didn't look like it was going to get out did that it seems Joe to be carrying a little bit here tonight [Applause] [Music] the Johanna's got one home run and four outs what was your first observation that ball went long that first looked like he's trying to fight it off and hit it to right field all of a sudden it's someone's in his left-field seats is getting a souvenir that's hey it's a home run derby man they might have something different to have his second you know you think of those two hottest or a cheese looks on and certainly in Baltimore she's been a disappointing season for him he's been frustrated a lot of times hasn't it you know he's such a passionate flair he loved the game so much he loves the win you know any time they're not playing up to his you know expectations I think he wants to be you even wanted to go someplace else in the winter but I like the fact that he stayed there because I think he can help make that turn that franchise around he's fifth out how much of the Palmeiro and the b12 you think affected his personality on the field because he was one of the most enigmatic energetic enthusiastic it definitely had an effect on him I mean or even insinuated it puts a little stain on you and how you look at other people you'll be over the other people around you we're all getting sad he's got six outs and two home runs crikey so far you you know him as his personality Chris mentioned the number of consecutive games he's played he really came to identify the Orioles almost post Ripken and that's the thing about this organization Carl you know if they made him promises we're gonna go out and get some people to help you win and didn't then you know that's a different story I understand why you wanted to be traded to home won seven outs let's go back down to the field boom alright guys thank you so Tejada has to dig in because two home runs aren't gonna do it and he knows that well he's been here before and he knows if you get on a nice little role you take the time to get patient you get a good pitch to hit but I thought it was interesting the observation they made about what Joe is saying about how typical it is the right-handed hitters during batting practice David Ortiz Miguel Tejada and Jermaine Dye are all sitting out there talking about the ballpark and he was laughing at him because the the two right-handers out of your difficult field of hit it in - well the fence is shorter but the distance belong ger to go out to left for the right-handed hitters so Tejada with eight outs and we'll show you in a minute when you get to nine outs they're gonna use a different ball and he's gonna be at it right now then here it is it's a special gold ball throughout the night these balls put into play for every homerun hit on the you know when you have only one out left Major League Baseball in century 21 we'll talk to combine $21,000 to Easter Seals and the Boys and Girls Club of America so last year bunny was gold outside he's usually special gold and white baseball's and Tejada knows that he needs several golden homeruns does yes he does maybe that's what he needs the gold ball well you can get on a good streak and make some money sometimes you need the incentive to give back to charity Maplewood baseball does a lot of that with home runs throughout the whole year and I think it's great each a few more out of the gold we have eight contestants to start four from each league the top four will move on to the next round and so Miguel Tejada thus far he needs some good pitching coming what he needs to the other batters right really struggles [Applause] now steps in you see is 24 as it was discussed by Chris Mullin he's gonna hear Lefty he has a short porch out here in left field and why not give it a whirl it messes up the swing I'm sure the Astros aren't gonna be very happy I know they're not he's been their major source of power one swing one out for Lance Berkman yesterday two swings now I thought there should be some patience involved here yeah well he's going up there I think he just wants to get in the rhythm he's trying to find the rhythm I think one of the things you'd think about is everybody's trying to make sure the pitch is perfectly thrown where they want it I think you go up there and get loose if you find one spot you get in the groove I think you see guys hit seven eight home runs in a row I think that's what you have to find a groove more than find the right pitch taking a deep breath after three quick swings and three quick outs if the Astros found a groove with Clemens back and there's his [Applause] now the question is yes it's a terrible so Lance Berkman the first to get a ball wet the next swing fourth out high boom we saw one get wet as Berkman continues we'll go down to UNH our well that one was right around the pole that's controversy early I had that foul no matter it's wet we know that much so Berkman who leads the National League with 79 RBIs he is one of the sweetest swings in the game absolutely he's so effortless you know just a nice easy swing now I talked to Lance earlier all the controversy were talking about suta hit right left whatever not want to mess up his swing he said if I'm not that good a hitter to be able to make an adjustment when I get back I shouldn't be in the all-star game so I guess that settles that National Player of the Year in college in 97 at Rice University Texas boy through and through and everything big in Texas City to the big output late in this at-bat from Lance Berkman and that'll be an out well his approach his philosophy talking to him he said I want to hit down on the ball and get backspin so it's gonna look like I'm swinging down on it you can't swing up he seems to think you don't want to have an uppercut but a couple balls he's hit out and that was he might have made an adjustment already elmo's ko to pitcher that's that's a sign of sin throw me some better pitching well he's got eight out she's got to get moving to hotter with three the leader in the clubhouse hard to believe that this was a good shot [Music] [Applause] Paul kept climbing and going so too for Berkman hoping it's not too late well it doesn't take much to get on a nice groove and neither one of these guys Burke Leonor Tejada have been consistent we didn't see back-to-back two three four like you will see before they will sing it very soon we're all spoiled last year with the Braves his home run by the way the last one for net 56 feet so now we've got the gold wall in there and that was helpful for Miguel Tejada [Applause] I was close it was close coming out of it they got that little net there blocking them from getting it well seeking the Berkman with Houston Thames like to grab you almost made last year on a home run in Houston in the World Series out there on our set so let's versus will be like Miguel Tejada with three slow start to the Derby as far as big numbers go well I don't think anyone's finding their rhythm I think they're being more patient trying to find a pitch in their zone without thinking that it's more important to get in the rhythm than it is to find the zone because I think they can hit the ball out in any zone if they get in their rhythm when you look at young players yell and you think of potential in talent and you see Cabrera what what potential does he have well he's got I would think of ken griffey jr. really who came to the league you know 19 20 years old he looked like he was a star right away he and he was and I think of Cabrera that way I mean you look up you know 10 12 years it'll be close to 500 home runs if not there so that's the way I have Ewing just like I did ken griffey jr. first swing and that one looks like it's going to stay in the ballpark Rooker that's pretty good company from Miguel Cabrera he of the Florida Marlins little incident yesterday John and Joe we saw with a pitcher who appeared to show him up on the field is that what he was so upset about yeah that he was definitely upsetting the pitcher basically said he didn't give him a good effort that's what he was he felt like he played it well but you know you never show another teammate up on the field we all know that yeah absolutely I don't blame me for going after his pitcher you just wish you to have been behind closed at 23 years old you know they listened to him when he speaks home run two outs as Cabrera continues let's go to Bonnie Bernstein buddy Italian one guy who's probably rooting for mr. Cabrera and that'd be of on Rodriguez's former teammate with the Marlins when they won the World Series in 2003 budget he was just a rookie back then how have you seen his hitting develop well he got a tremendous improvement I think Miguel is a tremendous hitter very smart with the with the AJ right now he is one of the best here in the game today to win the whole thing but we got the amino disease is a tough guy but I go with my guy papi can interview Kenny let's talk about the Tigers for a sec your first two years in Detroit they were among the worst in the league now you've got the best record at the half tell me what's transpired that's changed things so quickly I've been worse day the attitude that we have I think of with what Jim Leyland bring us to the team was very positive and and what we're doing just play the game on you know he just tell us to give a stronger for our effort every day and that's what we're doing in the POS and the thing was very you that's probably the reason why they we do end up with so far boomer pageants iya starting catcher for the AL and his battery mate will be starting pitcher Ken Rogers first time Detroit ever had two starters battery Thank You funny that's a franchise been around for a long long time just seeing Pudge you know he was at the plate in the 10th inning at that great all-star game played here in Pittsburgh in 94 probably the best all-star game in the last quarter-century partly because there was no World Series like that was it McGriff hit the two run homer in the ninth for go she managed beautifully remember Moises Alou with the double Tony coming home like a little kid Pudge was catching Jays a great start here at Three Rivers huh some great moments in this in this area period Cabrera hit you know back to him here watch this front foot no stridor at all just a rock back and let it flies get tremendous power on the home run before that Harold was 468 so he already has the most of Tejada and Berkman and now him about three all-star appearances already at he's 23 he's amazing I thought Jo's comparison to 19 and he came up and you know a lot of what Miguel's going through a lot of people were demanding a lot of interviews of cannon they thought it was immature cuz he did that's tough for a young kid and now and he became the franchise of the Mariner organization at 23 very similar comparisons of these two guys well how about his leap on the postseason stage the second youngest man ever had a home in the postseason Andrew Jones who's here with the brave the youngest so in the NLCS that year he hit it off a Kerry Wood Mark Prior and Carlos Zambrano you know by the way in the World Series that went on for Roger Clemens hello hello after clothes that knocked him down he stepped back in there and said I'm gonna take you the opposite way at that here that one obviously for the out seven outs three to go that were with last year at second in hits and they only sent in to Derek Lee of the Cubs keep going you know how strong he is he missed that ball from down here he missed them and that ball ended up the second deck of the Overlook over there left field left field line is 325 here at PNC Park that will not key that goes out boomer the home run was 458 the last one the one before that and speaking of home runs how about the tear that Albert was on before he got it was something special it's gonna still do put up some huge numbers it's all said and done to the home run derby this is way it's supposed to be got six and he's on a nice ball right now this what Joe was talking about we're waiting for a player to get into a good groove [Applause] seven homers for Cabrera I'm looking for that I want to save take one off the scoreboard up there 471 on that [Applause] ended up he's squared it up sorry glass coming up soon watching no one hurts he's got himself into a nice little groove done and now the gold ball is in there again young man from Venezuela where is the number of one of his heroes Tony Perez 24 babyface man he says man they're all babies [Applause] [Music] gone I've been smiling - if I knew that it says a quarter million dollars rheya see young man with the Mets the Mets of all those players internationally all the hitters for the National League tonight Brian Howard 26 Berkman 29 Cabrera and David Wright 23 were seen in the Senior Circuit this is far enough good showing by Miguel Cabrera [Applause] my deaf homerun swinger that would be Troy Glaus you know him from the angels of the introduction we reminded folks he was MVP of that o2 world series of the Angels and the Giants had that slugfest he's back to be in him you know he's been in the majors here back in 97 I'm a Troy Glaus at UCLA I mean he was amazing that one doesn't quite get out broke Mark McGwire's single-season pac-10 homerun record when he had 34 one year I mean he's he's a guy that's had 40 a couple times in the bigs and he did that all play at shortstop and comes yes yikes in there for a home run way up there and gone maybe the scoreboard kid right here if he gets into one I was 450 down the line it's only 325 down the left-field line if you can straighten it out and hit it you hit it between dead left-field and the line I mean he's got the power to miss and go out yes he does and the ball is carrying tonight I mean the winds slightly blow on the left field but not enough to really affect anything right now whilst trying to be patient is an uppercut swing swing you think Toronto is in there for keeps in the AL East I think so you think it's a three definitely and I think they're gaining confidence as they've watched the Red Sox go on a nice streak and they still hung with them and the Yankees have sputtered up and down but I think Toronto you know they made some nice additions now AJ Burnett is back throwing that feel good about themselves so left centerfield [Music] so five outs for gloss Robbie maybe you can wave a ball in your direction we'd be happy to do that out here watching gloss there's his sixth out and at some point early it almost looked like he was trying to slow things down and now he finds himself pressing a little he had pressed with six outs swings but again it's not about that I think it's just about finding a groove because again these guys can hit a ball the high ball they can get out the low ball they can get out in out it doesn't really matter once they find that crew we saw that with the Brera he all those pitches were not in the same spot he can hit the ball out if you get in the groove rookie seven outs this is the guy that on baseball night you picked now I thought I picked Miguel Cabrera but you know not not to check not to be a Herald and changed my mind real quick but yeah toward glass didn't do me too well but you know I had Carlos Lee last year he didn't do too well either there's Cabrera there's gloss watching this one in the yard so whoever it is cumulative you gotta add the first two rounds but he's got to do some damage just to get there Carl that's typical John Kruk bill putting it on me when he tried to change his pic you believe that boomer ah I hate to say yeah I do know it hasn't gotten this out there in the outfield doesn't think anybody's listening you know trying to just slip it by what's the story here pay attention see that's why I step aside of the space-boat that you guys want rabbit here in between these two I just thought it was interesting that Kruk he invented a new term pulling a harold i watch you guys every night and I thought you got along so well don't let the smile fool you Joe that's disappointing him well at least he got one this time you know that's how he got shut out [Applause] Paul lo Duca is going to throw it's a David Wright of course LaDuke of the catcher of the New York Mets no farm would you rather have if you're a GM your guy hitting in the home run contest or throw a baby the rights first swing is going to come up a little short I'm sure there's there's a will pond somewhere watching this it's like it oh oh what are we doing here my catcher my third baseman great debate about the left sides of the infield for the Yankees and Mets his right gets it in that one he's going to have his first but the debate of the Boyd Jeter and a-rod right Andreas and of course Reyes was an all-star who is hurt you have a thought on that job yeah I have a thought I don't think it's too early to make that type of comparison I mean you've got a rod who's close to 500 home runs you have Derek Jeter with four rings it's kind of hard to compare guys who are just coming into their own to these kind of players I mean we're too quick to do that I think how about writing pools then for MVP got to be okay with the MVP because this guy is a solid guy in their lineup he's been one of the leaders but again I say fool holes I say right I say Jose Reyes I think Reyes makes that team goal because he is such a dynamic force at the top of the lineup but Wright is the guy that drives in the run so I believe it's more difficult to drive and runs than it is the score rules you can score runs in any different way shape or form an error you know a wild pitch you know anyway but you know the guys who can drive them in on a consistent basis and in the club hooking foul that to me is astounding thing at what David Wright does it seems like and the great ones do it Joe did it when he played you know Tony Perez was great at it the game slows down in the seventh eighth the ninth inning that's why they excel did he get that one he got enough air underneath it but perhaps too much no second deck for David rights of two home runs and three house how about the whole New York atmosphere that some people seem to be able to deal with this right takes another cut at it centerfield you mentioned the stage New York sanity right its bird difficult for most players to go under specially young players to excel there just think about it is taking rest a little while to adjust right walk right in he fit right into the New York atmosphere and I think he thrives on it he loves being there look at how comfortable he is on those pinch if you will he laughed in the dukkha after he smiled they got serious again and it is four I think I took in two now you sit down to Hana now it's time to take take a little notice of what right is doing [Applause] Oh Tom gladden his pitcher who's here tonight you saw him says when asked about the chances for David Wright make it six a chance cause he's a they're just long his six moves him within three of Cabrera and puts him squarely into second place the fourth home run put him on second place there's another line drives just a little short so that'll be his four thousand six home runs how do you stay grounded Joe when you're a guy like this living in the big city playing on a first-place team is another one I think either you have that first now Joe you do you don't change yourself some guys just in New York others don't and I think he's a guy who will always be he's loving it David woods good a home runs behind Cabrera here one see now Joe Mauer sitting 390 he's got his camber going oh he went for the downs on that one so eight home runs and he's only got half of his outs recorded five outs so we'll send it from straightaway right-center down to the luxury seats boomer and Harold hit start tell you what guys David right you saved five outs he's where number five he's hit five in a row at one point and they've been a couple of third baseman named Brooks Robertson and George Brett that were the number five pretty proudly in that spot David it was a game-winning home run against the Marlins he's continuing absolutely Jermaine Dye better getting ready he's coming up next David Wright gets under that one how about the job of the Duke is doing pitching to him he's got that nice little loop and he's getting underneath it he's hanging it right there where he wants it you know this do you think from down here in the luxury seats I mean what I'm saying they're missing that he's not really fully squaring it the ball is jumping tonight out of here you know we want to remind you that when torch 76 Harold's at this one is [Music] everything Joe talked about when they get in the groove they can hit a high pitch a low pitch a ball in a ball out and you see that's what David Wright is doing [Applause] I think we get the picture [Applause] carry over years past you'd have a big total you have to start all over with the second round but he can carry that number 13 into the second yeah and he may have enough you know that he's going to get up first though it's good to be different but he may be able to put this way I'm so far ahead that he can not hit too many in the next round and still advance to the finals the first two rounds cumulative total see is the ball is flying but I think that's fair with the new rule you know you want that you want to be able to put on a show [Applause] whatever Sewickley is it's not right down the street here it's a suburb of Pittsburgh gets under this Elizabeth tell-tell right here the homer he's up to seven outfits gene homers for David Wright two and a half years in the be heard the guys talking about how much this guy probably grew up loving baseball it's a high school baseball team listen to this Bryan Zimmern third base Washington Nationals BJ Upton Bay Devil Rays and David Wright how would you like to be a high school pitcher prints against those three chances they better won a state championship down there Virginia Jermaine Dye coming in has his warmups he'll help find out what David Wright is doing I'm sure his dad police captain in the Norfolk Virginia police force obviously very proud of their son of this one have enough to left-center field back [Music] Bobby Abreu in 24 first round last year David Ortiz oh by the way nobody remembered at 17 yeah and that 17 didn't carry over so yep you go no chance wear yourself out this takes a lot out of you to swing this many times with this [Applause] that's another $21,000 gold ball out any hits [Applause] [Music] the order performance to dis off from david riders now on top 16 home runs and we're joined by the teammate of the next guy the good thing is Jermaine Harrison daughter Ava who's only 10 months old and we now know where she gets the looks from but beyond that for me I know that for sure beyond that you say dies got no chance y know Jan why say that because I hit with him every day and I've seen him in he doesn't have the home run swing and BP you would have thought the same thing about David Rice who seats you remain steps in with his 25 home runs he's a line drive hitter Glavine said Wright had no chance yeah but Jermaine doesn't have me throwing to him like David Wright had LeDoux go do it though was that a consideration why didn't he I asked him and he said no he said no he said he likes the guy throwing to him better I told him just to swing ten times to go home you hit with him there's his first swing and his first down he's something capable of getting on a roll here definitely is capable but we did play 19 innings yesterday so he might be a little tired and you caught for all 19 and now you're you're carrying your ten-month-old around you exhausted I'm getting there I'm working on it but I'm still going off adrenaline right now and Jermaine gotta choose [Music] [Applause] I get shut out though that would have been the worst thing so at least he's got one he's passed it told me would be another great guy to having this derp but it told me noggin is no Allegheny River would be calling him guy who's had great success in this his second one that would find right field and that's two outs for dying talk about the White Sox you're in that great division the Tigers just seemingly can't lose and you know the twins are in the rearview mirror our division is unbelievable I think if people don't get about our division as the pitching the pitching and our division is unbelievable Cantara Santana now you feel very ah no in there Verlander Koo possibly could have been here you know you don't even mention Cece or closely or Jake Westbrook or the other guys so it's a it's incredible division anytime you put up numbers [Applause] [Music] it's incredible first row would count and it is his second home run to go with the three up matter how far we hey as long as he if he loses in the first round he's gonna hear it the next day I know that what's the clubhouse like in Chicago we know all about the leader Ozzie Guillen his dykes takes another cut and one foul the Ava's making the call she said foul what she saw it and she was she knew his foul she seen me hit too many foul that's my problem what's the club I was like in Chicago with Ozzie there well you guys know crookie played with Ozzie you notice how it is it's it's a luces clubhouse I've ever been he's obviously the best manager I've ever played before we won a World Series but he's great he's nothing like you see in the media he's totally different he's fun he enjoys his game he wants us to play hard and as long as he do that you're fine as soon as you don't play hard he'll tell you and he won't hold a grudge and if you do it again you're gone six outs for Jermaine Dye he's got two he's he in last place right now no I know who's got one so we're all right right now yeah my big boy Rose also picturing loss and he's already heard it from me that ain't good so Jermaine Dye with two home runs and six outs there's another one [Applause] well the Yankees did it to marital count here you talked about the pitching in American League central you and a lot of those guys you mentioned Liriano Santana CC Sabathia [Applause] I know tell me about it that's got to be tough but you're still hitting well over 300 tell you what David Ortiz we flew here with him from Chicago he looked at me on the plane is like I tell you what if you can hit 313 your division you're doing something because you get Liriano Santana Kenny Rogers you go to burrow under an hour Robertson mark Redman a Feld Burley it's it's lefty lefty lefty every night and I mean there's a left-handed hitter you're just trying to get one hit and make contact out the time I will continue a four homers 7 Alex boomer well fun with AJ up there he's he's always in the middle of things didn't he even the home run derby absolutely AJ you're not too talkative are you I know Harold only when you're around AJ you're always in the middle what do we talk about before you're like Pigpen in the Charlie Brown always get in the dirt right that would happen any other way in the middle of this one German Bercy putting on somebody else hey listen I heard what you said you see that look I want to remind John Kruk that I am NOT changed my pick my pick was with Jermaine Dye at the start I've not pulled up that's not good say it that's it you and I yeah I don't know that's going out on a literally this morning he picked Amanda I know I know he's making me feel bad for telling him he's got no chance now I mean I'm not gonna say anything but it's not exactly regulation balls we're using right about now Joost is amazing I made sure I left field back back back back back hit the head of here that one was with the Erie almost I'd say well Jamaican hit him when he hits him now he hit one in our place of almost in the fundamentals deck which I've never seen anyways you know speaking of your place the ball is jumping in that ball yard it didn't used to travel like that we only have six home runs Kevin it's not stopping told me he's got 30 here's my career year I'd let Tomi have some fun there's AJ how come your daughter so well-behaved it again because she got her looks at her behavior from her mom there you go I could you take my cue nicely we can work together there's an out so Jermaine Dye though has put himself into good position these guys are amazing and watch once Jermaine Dye driving the ball dead center Phil what's where this ball is gonna hit dead center that's about as perfect the swings are gonna take and here's the one that's just a blast to left field but again you know we talk so much about these guys stand behind the baseball that was 476 feet right there I'd be smiling too late of all that ball David Ortiz Boomer certainly one of those guys who understands the science of hitting as well as anyone and if the river were threatened you'd think this would be the guy to threaten it big happy you tell him that this is the last at-bat and the team is tied or down by a run every one of these balls has gone out how does he do it do it in the clutch so much he's got such great concentration and having Manny Ramirez hitting behind him he knows he's going to get something to hit - and he locks in and delivers better than anybody Jonathan Papelbon saying hey Big Papi gets a hit big [Applause] papi it bounces into the river look out those oars are dangerous there while they're fighting with the net and in the water this is going to be fun to watch the discipline and understanding of having been in a home run hitting contest before he is zeroing in on the exact [Applause] and that's did that get in over the fence to his shirt here they go that might have bounced off I don't know that's such a line driver that left the stadium but you can see what he's doing boomer he's taking his time get the numbers up and then after that let's go put let the dog out put on a show that was marked Loretta the starting second baseman of the American League who's really made a mark with the Red Sox three months he knows what he's about he had the camera ready for every sweep or big bathroom he doesn't with such a smile tool I mean he he has become the personality that you want that sauna out in that personality that makes you want to be around him he's got that that that it thing they always talk about that star quality 31 homers leads the majors 87 RBIs leads the majors he along with several others in this home run derby we're seeing a new rank here during this season as did Jermaine Dye as did Lance Berkman this year come on Papa it's my pick my pick cheer him on I got a longest home runs thus far Jermaine Dye and David Wright 476 some serious trombones in the crowd gathering outside the park in the Allegheny River with just outside this is this is shades of no the Giants ballpark will Covey Colvin how you could stand on a walkway maybe get something yeah they've got everything in this Park for a fan it's got a little area for youngsters they can hit baseballs in but as a spectator ever sit in the house is tremendous as Paul does it adds always that ball is hit hard of course the wall in right field is 21 feet so Harold and Jo you got what do you think I want to send go up there and hit that set up there maybe turn to the thing I think most of the attention from every person in this crowd it's on Ortiz like it hasn't been on gets your attention there are certainly hitters when they walk to the plate that gets your attention okay from anyone else [Applause] keeping an eye on him Harold we're keeping an eye on this mesh screen in front of probably won't hold it six outs three home runs and Wright and Cabrera by virtue of being in first and second place have already qualified for round 2 they're moving on and the work out a large buildings what they're swimming swimming oh they to cross stroke beach the breaststroke that that would beat my paddle stroke does that be other time to survive well with that Homer Miguel Tejada at Lance Berkman now know that they will not reach the second round ball gonna reach you fellows not quite that will Series in 2004 anytime they go on the road they become a huge favorite and here in Pittsburgh with a boo Derek Jeter before the game there's no cheer in his name well it's fun ease up stand up the next two copies return the Cano as you watch this ball fly over your heads out there off to water turn the canola said you guys get booed everywhere don't which is the ultimate sign of respect right well the Yankees 26 championships I mean everybody you always hate the Yankees and everybody did it's funny well it's kind of hard to move Johnny bits Petros Tony Perez those kind of guys they're all nice guys but I did not get booed on the road it was it is amazing because I I've seen and heard the booing for the Yankees on the road but it wasn't like that the only got not like cheaters not advice guy bottle a Ortiz with six home runs needs one more to move into a tie for third with Jermaine Dye and we still of course haven't seen Ryan Howard get a chance I don't think you want to be seen with Ryan Howard waiting on deck side remains I looking on there six homers eight outs but he's on the bubble Jermaine is [Applause] you saw the Jets during baseball tonight that sounded like these f-16s it buzzed us unclear that's a huge job that kids who got to get excited about that he's just electric you know everything he does it brings a flare about it it's just fun to be around David Ortiz now this will get him past your main guy and into square third and get him into the post around 2:00 [Applause] punks are one of those rafts hidden that wasn't in the air Allegheny River shot there's robinson cano how often do you see a Yankee cheering for a red sock or at least smiling as a result of a Red Sox player does well maybe he had to go down there in a canoe out there and get some of the falls so now the gold ball Ortiz is moving on clip Brera moving on gave it a right moment and Ryan Howard will be the one up against Ivan let's see now with with 14 and the crowd is starting to really get into it they saw that gold ball step up when you're talking they started getting excited well this is the ninth inning for him but he's already in the next round so this isn't a walk-off gold ball in the next round home run so maybe he won't hit it I don't the prelim [Applause] [Music] they hid in here sign now the mastercard sign merci awesome once again big Pappy is indeed big Pappy this one is starting to [Applause] what Lana charity balls being it fittingly in his last at-bat if you will by David Ortiz absolutely these were the most terrible guys and [Applause] very first one when I can remember hitting like for the first one over the fence that's a big thing my idols were grippy and bonds coming up and I like there's my girl I like how they play you know just how they went about their business the most clutch home run I've ever hit it's probably a couple last year in Atlanta was a Grand Slam and there was a walk-off home run and fairly against the Dodgers there's always two with you there's always two it can't just be one my thought it's just the basic one two step nothing too special no spinning no breakdancing or anything like that you go out there and you have fun with it he's on pace to break Mike Schmidt single-season mark if you talk about most homeruns in Phillies history before the all-star break Ryan Howard 28 times you told me who Mike Schmidt in 79 he hits 31 you've no lion since he came into the organization in Philadelphia this he need for this type of event because it's his first is it going to be tough but I think it's gonna be tough for him Carly you know you've talked to people around Philadelphia and he sees one of these guys that you know he doesn't try to hit homeruns and batting practice he wants to work on the stroke more and he thinks that trying to hit homeruns and beefy who's gonna mess up his swing so this could be interest to see how many times he actually tries to pull the ball was a smooth swing for Ryan Howard one out and again folks the new rule here is home runs will carry over to the second round two swings to us what do you think what do you make of his swing so well I think he's a little more aggressive than what we've seen on those first two swings he's taking those are more batting practice swings that was a little more aggressive but it still looks like a batting practice swing you ever think a guy gets to the point Joe where he's a young kid and it says he's playing in front of this packed house and the nerves on these he's thinking himself you know I got to just make contact maybe that way let's go down a boomer with a guy who shows no nerves well that's for sure and we're with David Ortiz who's joined the herald and I down here and aren't you tired big man not yet got some work to do still oh yeah yeah yeah we're coming in we kick it in you know right oh man on the fly you know that's the most got a guy in a kayak out there and I can't see him from the plate but he have a feeling that these balls were really flying out over there for you they were going pretty good they were going pretty good you know I was I was just like getting into the moment at the time and and and he'd take me a minute sometime it happened to me invite him practice normally the daily basis I use to take me a minute to get into the groove of when I get into the groove like they put some songs on board in the other side well I know you love to study left-handed hitters and you know Ryan Howard is a guy you watch what do you like about Ryan Howard you know what this young man right here he is one of the most impressive and he got the ability to vote I was a feel like a right-handed hitter so it's just amazing how you can be at that age and L in the big league you know I was talking about when you were hitting how much Fenway Park has helped you with that monster shooting balls that way and then inside definitely you know what the Green Monster actually make you better here than meet you I said left ender and he just because the ball so much what I like to do when I when I since I came to Boston stay inside the ball hit her hard anywhere it games on the line you're even a more dangerous hitter than in the first or third inning white I guess a rental I don't often ever been at a time and you morning to the game [Music] with three homers he's going to need seven to at least four say bad off if you will with Jermaine Dye who's a man on the bubble so you're missing Manny here he's selected Manny Ramirez but took some time he'll strange not to be here little I know try me and actually myself personal right I have been giving Manny massage with some some some stuff that I have from back home because I want my man to be healthy you know I mean so did feel like that with him being the top vote-getter he's kind of obligated to come you know yeah with you when you leave this thing in boardings it would be good to be nice to you know chosen son love to the fans come in receive you are your words like I say you know even a struggling with his knee Manny just a big tying horse that he like to help his teen and be out there every day when I bought clothes I know you didn't want to see him going there talking about change [Laughter] they run in Howard sterilizers meanwhile go I wanna I wanna I wanna say what's up to my man Willie Harris he was gonna come over to pitch me he's up in Cairo with my boy this right our to Anna big happy hitting him in the clutch hitting these outs now one board and time die and stay alive for the second round took in a while to get get it see lights here I know I know come on big top who's with you here this is my little birthday today oh yeah happy birthday [Applause] number seven back in his back in and remote Henderson the magic ginger so now you guys are still in the moment he's one of the best in the business now when you get to that last one the gold ball you're aware of the twenty one thousand dollars on the line you hit that oh yeah oh yeah you better wear it and you wanna you wanna [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] now what are you doing we want to go to the cage and take some swing especially when you about to peek in and keep on moving keep on moving you don't want to just shut everything down to take off once again [Applause] Ryan Howard meanwhile took leak though they're happy Ryan Howard four homers on the gold ball moves him past Jermaine Dye teddy age will join big patli Miguel Cabrera gave it right in round number two why he does such a great job once again him he asked the ability to hit the ball with that Center that is the bullet driving up all long ways mr. Ryan Howard a young man making his debut boom [Music] here we are to the second round now yeah right now looking pretty good at you're thinking daily you know heaven right Lord you can't go wrong with David right now how supported could be the house of David here in Pittsburgh Duke hey maybe was catchy Jason I hate to be a jump ball or in his forties there we go break out the knuckleball and get somebody out now to be interesting to see if they're both able to come back with the consistency they showed the first round I don't think I don't think right hits 16 this round boomer that's really going out like but you may only update it you know what it's possible he may have to hit three four or five and not give him 21 and may be in good shape we'll see so you said I'm Captain Obvious is that saying that maybe here's one of them [Applause] right so much for this line drive hitter that we're supposed to be seeing how about he andreas on the left side of the infield could be for a long time [Music] compliment each other you know with the different styles that you know with Reyes the speech guy and right you know right can run too but he drives the ball on the gas and I think Reyes sports all said and done it's going to be possible type of guy himself here's Jose Reyes enjoying his teammates with the Duke of pitching to David Wright a lot of Mets here the best record by far in the National League down the line does it having a bump oh caught in the corner it wasn't robbed but I thought for a second he's guys this one won't be robbed it is it was this was robbed six-foot wall they st. Lennon hit age they presents you were area that chains the balls now they're pulling the fielders how dare you make a catch at the wall let it hit right yeah so which they should actually alright a short few signs of fatigue but he got out front with that 16 the first round this is the advantage of the carry over if he's playing on the old rules he is crushed right now in the second round right no because it carries over he's able to carry that total over his ball carry over the fence he's getting a little tired that's alright get some spinach six outs in a row for gaben right but again the cumulative total of 18 then this [Music] you know third base has always been a mystery spot for the Mets throughout their history since they came in in 62 when they won the World Series in 69 the veteran came over from Kansas City the glider Edie Charles wore number five the basement for the Mets that fans will look at number five and David Wright for a long time anyone have a question well I think he can it over emphasize the point that the combined combination for the first two rounds is what the number stands out because you're looking at a lot the old format he's got to this round and so after that beautiful first round you'd have been possibly eliminated from the contest after this particular M yeah at this point he just wants to maybe hit one or two if he can get to 20 and leave the leader in the clubhouse with 20 that's the little other golfers still on the course he's go we have our golfers holding by out there Wow [Applause] [Music] punchouts in the world 10 o'clock tell every teen and still was in pretty good position I would think could be we'll see a lot of guys gonna put some pressure on it but you see that's up that first round 16 is a big point they see a little tired this time he was jumping on everything driving 76 or 71 this time barely get them over the wall David Ortiz the next to hit we're joined by Jonathan Papelbon the closer of the Boston Red Sox is this guy going to win it no doubt about it I told him I said I got a hundred grand on you give you 50 and he's motivated by that you better be this has been a special season for Ortiz for Loretto who we just saw and certainly for you you come in here as as a starter and end up being the best closer in the first half despite what happened yesterday I mean that transition why is it been so I'm not gonna say easy the Weidman was you've been such success well you know I think for me it all boils down to you know having that short-term memory you go and go in there and you don't have nearly as much success on the beta-2 that you got to forget about it make adjustments and move [Applause] again yeah well you know right now I'm happy where I'm at and you know I think that's going to be a situation that's going to come up next spring trainer whether we see what they want to do with me when after we're cheese wins this and he'll forget that you said 1500 you look at David Ortiz you see him every single day we've talked about his whole personality was up there with a hat on backwards as he takes his first cut and gets his first out we don't go in that Clubhouse every single day what's he like in there he's awesome he brings something to the ballpark day in and day out that a lot of guys you know cannot do whereas you know he gets us loose he gets us relaxed that gets us ready to play and you know when you have guys on that bike down your ballclub to help other everybody else it's amazing to swings to us for twos when you're tied and he comes up what are you thinking now we're think he's gonna win the ballgame for us which is tough situation to put him because he's almost expected to do that now but you know he's just he's been that clutch hitter for us and you know he's going to have to carry us through the second half of the season as well as a lot of other guys in our ballclub so you know historically the Red Sox have always been a team they're just going to pound the ball and they'll catch it later this year little differ they still pound the ball but they you guys catch the ball better than anyone a baseball how does that for a pitcher to pitch behind that I mean there's no doubt about it for me it's it's it's a lot of reasons for my success this year I can go out there and and be able to go out there and do what I can and pitch the guys and know that I've got that defense behind me to help me out it's been great 26 saves in the first half of the season for Jonathan Papelbon and our good friend Peter Gammons so we missed so much here at an all-star game said about you you could be playing wiffle ball or in Game seven and you'd still be the same way as we see where T's make his fifth out Jonathan thanks very much for being with us let's go down to Harold and Boomer I think Harold and Boomer he's got to spin his hands like it usually does before is it back get that thing going again well maybe he needs Robbie to you know get late in his at-bat to at 7 8 9 outs and get going then you you mentioned Peter I haven't had a chance to be on we speak for well thousands tens of thousands of viewers out there who have grown to love Peter and CMS David Ortiz since this one heads up guys and we all wish chef Peter a good recovery we understand moving along well and we love you we miss you it if you're watching it all Peter you're dually missed here at the All Star but Peter I've had every player stop by here asking how you're doing want your address wanting to call you want to get a hold of you so we wish you well my friend get healthy one we miss you David Ortiz and that was a long way to just have a shot at water on a bounce and kayaking there they go paddle paddle paddle paddle paddle paddle the swimmers get it well again you know you look at the experience of a guy having been in a home run contest before bang just missed but you know David Ortiz didn't panic on the first five outs had nothing and just stayed with it I think David Wright he got he knew the fatigue was there and he kind of tried to force a swing that's from first time being in this contest but I think Dave's right on David Ortiz understand well that one is he's gonna dig in David still may be okay with 18 he's in good shape yeah they're all equally tired Oh Noah hat okay there you little little little wardrobe malfunction apparently that's what it was absolutely all right now the crowd trying to egg pick Papillon for some late home runs here in the second round four I got a message today from Sam Little Bighorn you remember Sam a hitter like I mean but some TV working boss has got a saw now come to Pappy put that out there [Applause] all right cold ball time for David Ortiz talked about himself he's very aware of the gold ball it's Altoona there you go the heat the gold ball wow that one doesn't go so David Ortiz three homers adding to the ten that he had in the first round gives him 13 [Applause] David Ortiz will be the first car to be passed here in the highway to the final round of the century 21 home run derby is David Wright very comfortable with a 16 hit in round one punch oh wait to get to 9 this one is ready to be gleaned from the 2 & 3 that right Morty sitting round - yeah you stated it correctly they're a little tired I mean you run out of gas got to remember one thing they all took came on and took batting practice as well which I was surprised I thought maybe some of those guys wouldn't take batting practice we're cheese played in a nineteen inning game on Sunday and played all day and admitted he was tired right of course played Sunday Cabrera was there as well Cabrera got into it with his pitching teammates this is this is going to be the highlight you believe in Miguel Cabrera's season even though the Marlins have got a very good season by by their standards with the youth this might be the highlight of the season yeah that's why I picked him Karl because you know when you look at the team that he had you got to remember his first year in the big leagues they won a World Championship and everything else after that unless you're repeating is a downer and then when they traded all the players away from him he probably [Applause] thank you Joe check him out thank Joe wrap him in two David Ortiz this is like a just kept doing his analysis like we didn't notice it this is the reason I picked and they see how fluid his swing is I said he didn't even miss a beat come on rookie sell it you gotta sell it miguel cabrera a little concern from Jeffrey Loria the owner of the Marlins we saw Bobby Abreu last year as Cabrera makes his 4th out to really well Home Run Derby and and since then it's almost like the owner of the Marlins said the same thing about Miguel Cabrera and his participation which was remember the past remember Bobby of rail well I disagree with all that it's still it's a home run hitting contest this all-star game you come here it's a one-time affair you go back you make the adjustments you watch you know film if you have to I just don't think they fly there from Cabrera to left field if some fielder's go down come on catch it but it won't be a home run Joe you were a big time home run hitter at times you guys ever in regular batting practice in the regular season take a round say hey I'm gonna cut some balls out of here well we always played home runs the last round kind of thing you know but ready to play but we would play home runs there was the big guy that channelled bits bits and piraeus that spot away his 12 homeruns oh that should have been a hole knowing because it was caught by someone in the stands that was caught by the guy in the first row of the stands well we'll have to play that back and see take a look I want to see a replay on that one boomer I think the guy in the first row got that [Music] after he's done we'll come back and look we may have see they just put the 12 homerun up they gave him the homerun good eyes Carl you got that eagle eye working out there you scared of not missing [Music] [Applause] right what city to a child tell though watching the first three guys in this in the second round if the bats load up a little bit they're laboring to get it through the zone and I mean I got that's like an August swing right there late every day well you got truthfully when you're getting tired and you're forcing the bat is John is saying that's when you get bad habits when you're actually trying to force it through when you're tired that's why I think what happened last year to Bobby Abreu and he hit what 20-something homeruns that first round I mean Big Papi well now could celebrate his son's birthday right so Cabrera knows that he's passed Big Papi but he also knows Ryan Howard can thunder from behind still guy just jumped into the last round did [Laughter] [Music] rookies guys gone Ravi who did you have I had that guy I also had a hundred from uh Jonathan Papelbon that went out the window to [Laughter] these guys may he's a rookie rookie and dropped 100 grand out of their land yeah yeah when did you make 100 grand first year [Music] [Laughter] bovary's climbing these get 15 and they're getting longer yeah they are here with the golf ball [Music] there's six home runs here in a second we know the night has ended for the people's church with happy David our team I just see the swing here is walking right by us and crusty Hills you can do but gal nice job everything else how have you the whole way now watch I stays behind this just let them know he was my guy from the beginning fellas [Laughter] here's that pretty story again this picture says a thousand words that is just absolutely incredible it's gonna be an all national league model because if our doesn't fast Rivera is going to Victor Vera and David right he's a punch guy we saw in round one and here he comes again on the biggest stage can he do it in each eighth to move into the front no what I saw at beginning he started off like I said he was taking batting practice all of a sudden about after four or five hours he started using his leg he started generating more bat speed and that's when he hit the ball out so I expect him to hit some home runs this time because I think it'll start off using his legs and when he does that he can drive the ball that's two out she likes to hit with two out so this is he has to outright Howard said before this whole thing began it's not the line drive derby I looked at of this fun everybody there is looking at of this fun so that's gone so I'm not going to try to make into the Ottoman or put on extra pressure one for one hey you know I think I'm gonna I think you get 15 well you picked him Joe me and Joe might be in the finals look up in a dictionary beginning next year what a herald is then about face during a homerun Derby you'll have Santana trying to figure out how we're going to pitch them tenth home run let's quickly go down to Bonnie Bernstein Astros manager Phil garner and I are just marveling over some of these shots Phil of course the second baseman for the 79 Pirates team that went to the World Series for some of the younger fans tell us why I called you scrap iron well I like Milo Hamilton's version on that he said I was tougher than an old piece of scrap metal you could Bend me beat on me but she couldn't break me I was like scrap scrap metal Dave Parker who sitting over here used to say they called me scrap iron because my glove acted like it was made out of metal ties in the hole steel counting let's talk Phil about some of these young guns we have here in the National League Ryan Howard David writes so much power for young guys well it is and you know for all the talk about what's going on these days these are great young hitters I mean it's amazing what they can do I'm surprised number one and how big they are and you don't really realize that until you get up next to them but they're all so strong and they have great swings that's the one thing that I marvel at here you know sometimes a lot of guys with power they just go and they have a they're kind of like a softball swing but these guys have good fundamental swing managing the NL team tomorrow the all-star game what's your strategy do you have it I'm trying to put one together yes a lot will depend on what happens in the middle part of the game on the first part of the game is not much strategy we're just gonna let the guys play but how you insert your you're extra guys after that there's gonna be a little bit of stress [Applause] Thank You Bonnie and these guys are dodging balls again see Ryan Howard is okay rookies about facing I'm gonna send him a message well I'll tell you what pretty impressive you watch him hit that one to dead center and then that one right up there and right center right here Darren and Robin where's your towel you got to start waving the towel and actually hit Kirk's unit Kirk and RAM [Applause] hopper into the river he just walked up on that wall and it was no big deal Joe have you ever seen this kind of power who does it reminds you of Joe but we're talking about he's got a reminds me a little bit of Willie Stargell and that he hits the ball to all fields you know right now but I think he's gonna be more of a close get your hand up no just shine don't you guys bring your gloves to the game screen here which is which is nice but we got to go Glover here we got to go I lost mine good doing never is 11 scrap-iron he lied like the way he described the two stories he pulled a higher equal to heralds a killer midnight Hey Joe can you elaborate what you're talking about though becoming more of a pull hitter for young guys and you realize which balls you need to pull and which balls you can go the other way with you start to pull the ball more Willie starved it when he first came up he had a lot of home runs to the left-field left-center field and then he started to work more around toward right-center because what you'll see from Ryan Howard as he you know progresses it gets more experience he's given Ramon a little breather here as Ryan Howard's got 14 he needs 16 to get into the car around against David Wright it would be an all NL East battle between Howard and right either way with Cabrera the Marlins it's an all analyse final now Ryan Howard needs to and this won't be one of them what a divorcee a penalty kick situation they swing off if you will are you surprised you came back and got this many home run a little bit but you know these months the dead center for the right center are very impressive up and we talked it to shoe now he's down to a towel go needs at least one to keep him alive we thoughts about the poppy factor though put the pressure on him the city's able to come up with it [Music] [Applause] goalball home runs to knock Jermaine Dye out in the first round two outs left Ryan Howard he swing off and this ball is kayaking so now knows that one more home run by Ryan Howard and Cabrera will join Big Papi is able but not able participants in the final round Cabrera is kind of tired [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Judy stop well it doesn't carry over he's right this stop sounds energy why he's not taking that hey I knees you know that's true go ahead and put a show on hit one out there that you got enough you should probably stop now that's one way to stop hit the wall but almost it's a charity ball this one's for you the gold ball coming so you don't want to stop here because charity gets absolutely what were we thinking we weren't thinking we've already raised over a quarter million dollars tonight that's pretty impressive tell you what mone Hernandez bullpen coach Philly's getting a large tub of ice tonight three hitters he's thrown two and he still on strike [Applause] we told you that the national league hitters david wright 23 Cabrera 23 howard 26 even Berkman 29 the young guys in here the young guns are shooting tonight [Applause] [Music] you got some great eyesight boomer cuz that didn't look like it was going to go that far and almost was off the crux mosquito netting out there just for the record one more would have him the top seed I guess going into the final thought that it makes a difference yeah but he'll be gave it right against Ryan Howard start in Amar's between 100 you know between New York and Philly will have an i-95 final [Applause] steady wins the race and he is deep and right we go to finals Cabrera and he's knocked out well he was my original Pig but I changed it so letís because I got caught up in the hyper poppy but there's a new property of town right now Ryan Howard is showing me how he swings it look at him stay behind this ball to finish that's when you know you got one you just kind of pose on them boomer and am gonna show you put your goggles on called him Aquaman pretty soon y'all Cabrera says you know what impressive Ryan and here's you just a water ball good stuff right there right and Howard for the championship as we continue the century 21 home run derby from PNC Park Boys and Girls Clubs of America the official charity of major league baseball together creating a positive place for kids all right so they got the finals now said it is Ryan Howard who two years ago was in the Eastern League at 37 home runs at the break and in an Eastern League home run derby hit exactly no home runs and then there's David Wright who nobody predicted it would be this far it wins it Harold what do you think I'm going Ryan Howard I you know what I like is he's working with the coach that throws him every day in batting practice he's seen them put together a couple good with good runs they're LaDuke up and right out the gate it was a cool thing second round it fizzled I don't think that's gonna hold up for them I'm going with Ryan Howard and Henderson to win this [Music] huh copy Dave Leduc a little instruction I think I hit the line if Paul's got his game face on yeah Paulo serious you know he was talking about it in between one say how do we just real serious about what he was she's trying to do here got a con straight yelling at David get focus you know it's nice I mean even though they they wipe the scoreboard clean and it's a clean you know it's everything new in the finals they were tied anyway so that perfectly worked out beautiful sheet John Kruk and I go that was nice got that a little loop back in there he does what's the winning number gonna be here stick five yeah as I said five or six Norfolk Virginia she allowed him a chance to Bennett watch the tides the Mets triple-a team growing up kind of fitting that he's with the New York Mets the team with the trench record in the NL that one Jess hi Bonnie Bernstein is with Ryan Howard Bonnie boomer it's worth noting with Ryan that he's not really a home run hitter and batting practice to Ryan how challenging was it for you to get into that mindset who trying to jack it out every time I had to kick a shot out I had to take it back all the way back to college when I went to Southwest you and David right kind of know each other coming up in the minors with the Mets and Philly so you know this is bragging rights but you it's fun it's fun because we've come up together in the minor leagues and just being able to be here and have it be the two of us is is it's great Bonnie Thank You Ryan Howard everybody else here at PNC Park watching David Wright getting the loop back in with three home runs well he's got a nice little groove and leduc is the key here right into his little loop zone and and you can see from this angle what's the arc not 20 so three outs three homers for David Wright a good start for the Mets third baseman just the second full season and the bench came up at two years ago in the middle Ryan Howard has barely made it 12 months in the majors at me and he's become a star and that's how quickly it happens these days where all these teams are on TV every day so you've become a national player in a hurry instead of just regionally you know you get a lot of exposure and Ryan Howard's on a very good Philadelphia team putting up big numbers and the Chicago White Sox are very happy that Ryan Howard got so good so quickly because they have juice almond thanks to that yes it's a pretty good for both club right with an out those count five outs but what you have to do is a young player is you just go out and play you forced the organization to have to make a decision that's what both David Wright and Ryan our both did just have enough [Music] [Applause] so for homers for David right here in the finals and all NL East final of the home run derby so fellas what's it going to take to win this from up here Harrell we think it's closer to ten you guys are closer to heaven so I figured you know everything you up there with the full moon hey what it's interesting watching the pitch come in this is these are not batting practice 85 65 75 mana or naturally he's pitcher I'd be looking at this and saying alright he can hit the slow hub you know what I read the other reason I picked Ryan Howard I mean David Wright can't have everything they're in first place he's in the running for the MVP and the win the homerun Derby as well as don't look too perfect kids nowadays they're greedy they wandered off oh that hit perhaps indicates that maybe the tanks running a little low yeah I think he thought he might have got that water that didn't even get to the warning track but I talked about the decision to move tome an to get Howard into that position that's right fouls another one off and he now has eight outs and four Billy's made the right move to move Thome worked out best for everyone you know you couldn't keep Ryan Howard down the minor-league sitting you know gargantuan home runs and and just putting up the numbers he was putting up obviously came up he's rookie de year so that tells you that he deserved the beer and Jim Thome was still Jim Thome I mean when he's healthy and you see what he's done for the Sox in a perfect situation for everybody to trade him and to give Howard a chance boomer Harold talked about the exposure Howard gets he's been exposed because the rest of those guys as a team haven't played well at all he's really a shining star for them he has been for a while they look like they're giving tomorrow happy out here he's an ambassador for the games he's great gold ball times 16 homers in the first round for David Wright just found out since what's the other number you're looking at two hundred and ninety-four thousand dollar mark say the number we had last year so Jerry David Wright waiting for the pitch all right well Duke I tell you what if you're gonna play the Mets next you got a run on the dukkha don't you he's not got those best stuff out there right now I would say he's tired just watching this takes a lot out of you and that'll take a lot out of your - right there it almost took the camera out of our hands what's his eyes Monson track this ball right out front off the bat see you later Wow pretty cool quite a shock got into the second round by hitting four balls out of the yard with the gold ball with one out to go in the first round now here he is and very interested would be James parks his wife filly he's a hydraulic repair technician from Irving Kentucky Gregg lunge in O from Lufkin Texas an attorney his wife Neela hoped that David writes for holdup the winner will get a quarter of a million dollars courtesy of our sponsor tonight century almost took Ryan Howard especially in the first round Chuck awhile to get gone didn't he yeah he did and the big a little different this the difference this time a little more discipline [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hitters background that one was all the way to Latrobe batting practice stuff that first dude swinging at old legs no nothing now he's just he's letting it go that's what he'll do you watch as he gets more mature that's why I say you'll start pulling the ball more and you start using their legs and you help the bat flies through there you know a little quicker you don't even have to try to pull it well David Wright an interesting spectator with our Bonnie Bernstein [Music] now you're sitting down because David doesn't have any gas left in the tank dude I'm done I'm done before the last round I did all that I could do I blew it out in the first round a rookie mistake I'll learn from it well that's all right you're 23 you got a few more years if you could do it differently second time around how would you do it same thing I mean there's only one way to do it that's hard and a little bit [Music] the best miners in the game so they get all the credit they deserve good Orion was Rookie of the Year in the NL last year the year before that you were one of the top rookies coming up being in the same division how competitive for the two of you not so much I think we came up in the minor leagues together you know we're pretty close so you know to be able to come out here and compete against him you know the National League represented well all I've been hearing all week is how the American League has dominated and interleague the American League has dominated and the all-star game so it's good to have you know two nationally guys in the final of the home run derby Oh chocolate up for the senior circuit for the time being for the time being we'll see about the the final decision tomorrow guys my buddy the juniors in the senior circuit Ryan Howard a different face just missed three homers are [Applause] clears everything in right field kayakers beware so Ryan Howard one behind tying to bind winning the home run derby five outs left I think this is over [Applause] just missed the left shoulder of the Crocker [Applause] shake his hands because this thing is old Harrell said it best it's over and five like these says you're gonna win it [Applause] do it on this swing take it away boomer abreu last year Philly's Ryan [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] because I know how tired they are remanded right [Music] this goes out to Ramone also this [Music] get your pitches and not try to make that last aisle [Music] [Applause]
