tonight batting 250 11 homers and 29 RBIs just 1 for 16 against Braves pitching in his brief major league career oh and one the count and a shallow center that will fall for a base hit used to remember when you got to hate higher you were still a long way from West Palm Beach on the way to spring training here's how the Braves have pitched McGuire and they've done it successfully lefty or righty Glavine up and away McGlinchey away Mulholland away there's Russ Springer everybody up and away the same way they pitched bat Williams and they have had a lot of success against the big guy staying above the belt staying fastball just showcasing the breaking ball and just going right at him 511 career home runs right now tied with Mel OTT he's one home run away from the career home run totals of Ernie Banks and Eddie Matthews 54 homers this year for behind Sammy Sosa Sosa it is 58 today for the Cubs runner going and McGwire pops it high in the air right side Cruz not sure where it is they're trying to get him to hustle back good thing that ball was hit high all Ryan Klesko might have had a rare pump fly DoublePlay Drew had no idea where that ball was Dave McKay at first base was frantically signaling him to get back well you're taught early you pick up the third-base coach or the first base coach but pick up a coach right away if you don't see the ball he looked up tried to locate it first if that balls two steps closer to the bag he's out of there two gone now for Ray Lankford who comes in with a seven-game hitting streak batting 318 15 home runs he's driven in 60 drew the runner at first has 16 steals and 18 tries this year and he's going on the first pitch here throw down by Eddie Perez the one hopper not in time stolen base number 17 for JD drew we knew about Drew's ability to hit into hit with power when he was signed by the Cardinals apparently he can run a little bit - going on first movement by Greg Maddux who really does it take that long to unload this one and he Perez had one down that he had to back in back in and come up throwing and just kind of short hop and so drew at second now with two outs and a one ball no strike count on Langford that one got Perez one ball one strike [Applause] lankford a $2.99 lifetime hitter against Greg Maddux that's pretty good three career home runs against him wanted to [Applause] Cardinals just got through with a four-game split of their series in Milwaukee there's still four games under 500 been a very disappointing year for them had a lot of injuries to their pitching staff in particular I think Greg is a little unsure of the signals with that runner at second Maddox is looking at the scoreboard a lot of times when you part of the combination of signs you you can use you can start off of how many balls that you start to count it can be one in two how many pitches it could be three pitches so the first sign could be the first sign after something on the scoreboard that's when he looked back at the scoreboard and looked at Eddie Perez and he gets the inside runner on right for his first strikeout of the night that's it for the Cardinals 2 base hit by JD Drew is all they get Braves coming up in the bottom of the 1st [Music] well Cardinals get a hit but nothing else it's the Braves turn it bad here's the batting order Darryl Williams Bret Boone and Chipper Jones the first three the heart of the order has Brian Jordan Ryan Klesko moving into the fifth spot Andruw Jones will bat six against the right-hander josé Hernandez Eddie Perez and Greg Maddux will complete the batting order the Cardinal defense as Langford in left drew in center McEwing in right McGwire and Poquette at the corners renter Ian Kennedy up the middle Castillo a bit defensive catcher behind the plate and Gerrit Stephenson on the mound sits his call-up since at the break has been near spectacular cut down on the walks throwing a lot of strikes he has a good breaking ball it'll be Gerald Williams Bret Boone and Chipper Jones do up here in the bottom of the first Gerald a270 12 home runs 57 RBIs time call Jarrell just got his first peek at alberto Castillo check out that mask tonight Castillo's Werth from the side he looks like the Phantom of the Opera that'll be out of play to the right nothing in one Scouts are starting to compile book on the brace a possible postseason play would look like a convention here at Valley Forge Ursa mini Scouts but one of the things you're starting to hear about Gerald Williams is that he has some power deep left field one-nothing Atlanta 13th Hummer of the air for Gerald Williams and the other thing where you hear is you don't give him a ball inside the pull early in the count [Applause] people wonder why we come here at 4 o'clock and rehearse this is exactly right fastball inside the book on him is go hard away early only come inside when you get 2 strikes on him but that one right down Broadway and he made them pay for it and now Bret Boone at 2:54 with 17 home runs as Gerald gets the spin going in the right direction and the Braves dugout to start out tonight's game to a no the count now and Bret Boone rent her a a good glove it's short for the Cardinals both robe of mcguire stayed with it one away love it when things turn out the way we rehearsed it that'll bring up Chipper Jones a couple of home runs in the game yesterday up to 37 for the year now with 90 RBIs and keep an eye on chipper tonight if he walks in tonight's game he will set a national league record for the most consecutive games with a walk he has walked in 16 straight games first pitch swinging little tap to second Kennedy throws a chip or two away I thought he had an interesting comment on that too he said it really hasn't been that hard they've been missing so badly that I really haven't had the layoff of any close pitches so it's it's been almost routine that he gets one at-bat a night where there's nothing near the strike zone that'll bring up Brian Jordan news over his last 10 try to get it going again hitting 292 with 22 home runs and he's driven in 102 that leads the club ball one outside [Music] [Music] [Applause] remember Benito Santiago in his younger days if you remember him you will remember Castillo watch how he slides out gives you a nice low target where he wants the ball deacon catch - and why mccannon jordan that fastball not all that fast it's 87 miles an hour it's about average major-league fastball as far as philosophy goes but after all the off-speed stuff you throw different looks a lot quicker that caught the corner as one of those breaking ball 71 mile an hour breaking ball to over the top straight down curveball it's unusual to get that called especially when you drop it in around the knees that's a beautiful pitch and that's all for Jordan ease down swinging Stephenson asses for a strikeout but a leadoff home run by Gerald Williams gets things going for the Braves it is one nothing after one [Applause] one-nothing after the Gerald Williams homerun it'll be crank Paquette Adam Kennedy and Alberto Castillo duo that kept playing third base again today Fernando Tati's is missed now three games in a row with a strained hip flexor muscle I kept though 343 with six homers 26 RBIs he has been oh one on the way just missed three games with the Cardinals in this series in the Braves head west they'll take on San Francisco not in California over the weekend Giants are trying to stay close but beginning to fade as they were shut out victims of the Mets today they're now nine games back in the wild-card race they are closer of their own divisions [Applause] there weren't too many people going to beat Kenny Rogers today complete game shutout Giants six and a half back of Arizona Arizona Idol today second strikeout for Maddux by kept down swinging one away in the second and now Adam Kennedy looks like he's won himself a job here for the next few years good-looking youngster 288 with a homer and 12 RBIs hit 328 in triple-a ball this year 10 home runs 62 RBIs paddocks got a glove on it slowed it down Hernandez couldn't quite get to it and Kennedy aboard it's a dad mang an Enfield so there's not a loose clod anywhere but there might be one stone that found its way out there up the middle just a little bit of leather and that one stone is right there bad hop up over the glove Hernandez got to it but the tricky hop gave him the base hit now the catcher Alberto Castillo always known for being a good defensive catcher was around the Mets organization for a long time but having a good offensive year this year 276 it's about 50 points higher than he normally hits walks about every 12 or 13 at-bats he's a free swinger and he's one of those guys at Greg Maddux will admit to you gives him a little bit of trouble because he calls them hackers you can't set them up you might throw 19 pitches to set up one and it's not gonna work cause he'll jump on your setup pitch Kennedy almost picked off by Eddie Perez in a plane that was a little slow developing a pitch out there's your key right there Perez showed him in plenty of time but it looked like he wasn't convinced that Eddie Perez was going to throw to first Kennedy without a stolen base for the Cardinals yet but he does have good speed he's only tried one triple a ball this year he stole 20 still sounds funny to say still twenty playing for Memphis and of course Memphis plays in the Pacific Coast League is if a ghostly so no the counter cast is called creative geography I can take Memphis in the Coast League it's New Orleans that bothers me they are in the Eastern Division of the coastline there it is there he goes he got a good jump little bouncing ball into right field over the head of Klesko that should get Kennedy around the 3rd and will and runners are now at 1st and 3rd good job hitting there by Castillo see there's your hacker for you that ball wasn't a strike but when you have a guy whose definition of the strike zone is anything he can reach that becomes a strike outside hit and run right down on it perfectly executed pick up your third-base coach at second and he gives you the come on that's perfect hit and run so there at the corners three hits now for the Cardinals and the batter will be right fielder Jill McEwing 280 for the year in his rookie year he's playing right field tonight he has played all over the infield and outfield for the Cardinals nine homers 43 RBIs and a perfect three for three against Greg Maddux in his career and all of them get the other way he has a unusual hitting style but he hits everything toward right field you kid almost defense him like a left-handed pull hitter with not much power by the way with that base hit Castillo is also now a perfect three for three against Maddux of the seven and eight hitters in the Cardinals batting order six out of six in their lifetime at-bats against Greg Maddux I've got the corner nothing into [Applause] this is one of the situation we were talking to wall twice about where you're the eighth place hitter and you got runners on base you have to expand your strike zone you can use this absolutely cannot take strikes you've got the pitcher on deck so worst thing that you can have happen to you is making out by putting the ball in play you just can't take in the air to right field Brian Jordan camped under attacking 1/3 as Kennedy there's the catch here's Jordans throw it's off the mark the runners in and we are tied at once on the killing with his 44th RBI and he did expand his strike zone he did put it in play and he got the run is Maddox was going to live outside on him had one that came back and was upstairs so he could handle it tied at one for the pitcher Garrett Stevenson who is over 15 at the plate this year runner at first two outs in a tie game all for 15 but very few strikeouts I think Stevenson has only struck out four times in those 15 at-bats 17 totally has to sacrifices nothing at one little roller down the third-base side it'll kick foul go into the cab [Music] maduk 17 and 15 lifetime against the Cardinals with a good earned run average 2.63 going for career win number 219 tonight as a lot of starts against the Cardinals it's not the numbers on that start earlier this year against the Cardinals back in early May that's when everybody was scratching their heads and asking the question what's wrong with Greg Maddux dish he has turned it around since then here's the one to do [Music] he is still given up a lot of hits three hits in this game 220 two hits on the year now in 188 innings but he's cut down on the long balls remember he was giving up the long ball it's full now 3 & 2 on the Cardinals pitcher [Music] sometimes it's a strike sometimes it's not this borderline and went against Greg Maddux one of the field that will go against it Ron will be on the move Castillo taking off on the 3-2 pitch right back to Greg and that's it for the Cardinals in the second but they get a sac fly off the bat to get in there first run of the night we are tied of forbidding to [Music] well hello there that's my I know those people let's move down in my neighborhood that's cantonment at the bottom word I'm just about to ask that yeah it's it's right between Molina and Gonzalez I was just about to ask that it narrows it considerably though there's Ryan Klesko taking a strike a downside going to Ryan 301 20 homers including one a couple of nights ago there was deemed the longest ever hit here Turner Field 449 feet high in the air deep right field he might have gotten under this one a little bit though McGee was gonna have a play just shy of the warning track to the out one gone under it and he may have caught it right near the end of the bat because he had a home run swing he just didn't have home run connection see if we catch it right out on the end and let's go with one hand he knows right there that he didn't get it because he didn't fling the battle now Andruw Jones hitting 270 with 26 home runs he's over his last nine when you see a hitter walking up and down the dugout shaking his head like that Pete he knows he got his pitch and he just missed it right there right there mister [Applause] file back by Andrew [Applause] Andrew maintaining his streak he is the only brave as a mr. game all year [Applause] in the left-center whoa he thought drew was going to take it drew thought Lankford was going to take it I don't know is oito one of the saw it at the end this is that time of night as it is and it fell between them for a base hit neither one of them came close Steve Finley isn't the only guy that struggles here at this time of the night I am dead certain that JD drew thought that he had it all the way Drew's got his hands out looking for help Langford has no idea where the ball is see JD Drew's hands I didn't I saw it and I don't see it there's a Bermuda Triangle out there this time of the night now Jose Hernandez at 267 hitter with 18 home runs well it's that dusk portion of the evening last for about 10 minutes before the darkness takes hold and we have seen outfielder after outfielder after outfielder have problems with fly balls especially in center left center and right center field [Applause] doesn't seem to be quite as difficult in the flyballs hip toward the corners but it's better lit in the corners here yes it is the lights go to the foul poles but there's nothing in the outfield you're looking for a crescent moon one ball one strike now on Hernandez right back to Stevenson he's going to make the play over a third and Andrew is going to be called safe [Applause] I think he's saying no way in appearance he had tagged you and I'm sleepy surprise Bobby Cox doesn't argue this one a little bit as a confusing call by CB Bucknor it looked like he was saying that there was some obstruction in the base path there he flips away and goes back that's what Andrew was looking for he was looking for the obstruction call and Poquette I thought Buckner was ruling him safe because of it so was I here he goes tries to get out of the way I believe that's a call that he should have gotten well it'll be a fielder's choice allowing Hernandez to reach one five four if you're scoring with us I'm really surprised my peacock stood up to you that one maybe if from the angle it looked like two Bobby Cox that Andrew may have run on the grass but but that's one there Andrew had a legitimate beef Eddie Perez the batteries at 250 for the year now five homers see that's it that's another thing we talked about Andrew Jones how good a player he is defensively and how much she's improved hitter as a hitter but he has some of the best base running instincts that's a little thing but that's setting that up to get yourself into that possibility is good instinct as good instincts that he knows who to go to to find out if he's right or not who's the best baserunner on the Atlanta Braves Otis Nixon right yeah who did he go to when he got back into the dugout and sit down next to Otis Nexus he was to find out if he had the right interpretation of what he thought was an obstruction call and he didn't get going too outside throw to first by Castile back safely as Hernandez one ball two strikes now on Perez little roller third charging at Paquette for the first in time to get Perez metal do it we're still tied 1-1 [Music] top of third one apiece time for our Wendy's leaderboard our category tonight home runs and who is inching near the top ten what wire tied with Mel OTT up up in Matthews in banks McCovey and Ted Williams tied at 5:21 it's a windi's leaderboard and we'll be seeing Mark McGwire hitting third in this inning leading it off will be Edgar Renteria at the first pitch of the game on the line right at the shortstop josé Hernandez tied 1-1 Renteria likes the first pitch he's also a good breaking ball hitter [Music] a ball and no strikes and Renteria still hitting over 300 his career against Maddux he's 8 for 23 and that bets to know [Applause] on the ground this time too short one away now that'll bring up JD Drew at a base hit the stole a base in the first [Music] [Applause] [Music] only his second hit off Braves pitching in 17 career at-bats [Music] [Music] Chipper Jones playing in on the grass didn't have far to go for that one two away and here comes Mark McGwire popped out to first his first time up came into tonight's game with a lifetime batting average against Atlanta of only 211 for career home runs out of his 500 against Braves pitching nothing magic about the way that they've been pitching him as we showed you in a sequence earlier go right out there [Applause] the usual barrage of flashbulbs going off every time the pitch is delivered to McGuire Oh [Music] didn't mean to and tipper throws him out [Applause] does it easy inning for Greg Maddux he got through that inning one two three and only six pitches to go to the bottom of the third still tied we go to the bottom of the third still tied 1-1 it'll be Greg Maddux in the top of the order Gerald Williams in Bret Boone [Music] selma alabama represented here a lot of folks got some hurry enough to do after the game tonight they head back home get to work tomorrow Maddox will lead things off here in the third he's a 189 hitter for the year has a couple of home runs nothing at 1-under egg that's out the middle hit number three of Stevenson [Music] and for Greg Maddux as 1110 of the area's backup over 200 [Applause] Gerald Williams led off the first inning with a home run for Atlanta he did the same thing against Randy Johnson back in June 20th so twice this year he's gotten things going in the very first inning for Atlanta with a leadoff homer now as 13 home runs on the air Gerald has a couple of sacrifice bunts this year but better than 50% of the times when he's trying to get that bunt down easier popped it up or filed it off he's one of those guys has probably never been called on to do it a lot so when he tries to sacrifice he still tries to bunt as though he were button for a base hit rather than swearing around got that one down a good get over to first in time got a second Greg Maddux better at second one out and Bret Boone the batter [Music] it's boon grounded to short his first time [Music] one ball no strikes and bread 1 for 10 in this homestand it's even one-on-one Stevenson came over from the Phillies in the ron gant trade wanted to together he did some work with him when he went back down to the minor leagues that is curve ball a little bit crisper it is velocity it's important for him to locate pitches [Music] even count of two balls two strikes he originally signed in the Orioles organization good month he's been good ever since he was call backup full count now three and two on Boone Cardinals are in a situation where if they get a couple of their young injured pitchers back and they wolf get Alan Bennett's back into action shortly he's back up with a glove and active flyball right by Bret Boone Nick Ewing there for the catch tagging at second moving on over to third will be Maddox two men out in the inning if they get Bennis back and healthy for next year and Morris maybe a bit longer than the start of next year they're not sure about that yet but if they can get him back they've got Rick Ankiel the young left-hander who we will see here on Wednesday night I'm really impressed with it yeah and Garrett Stevenson is not that all there's there's a quartet you can build around for a while they've got some good young physician players now with Adam Kennedy JD drew Joe McKuen Donovan Osburn another that they haven't been able to count on when he's on it gives you some innings he's healthy so they're Club that if the injury bug stays away from them and are able to get some of those young pitchers especially going again next spring they could turn things around quite quickly I'm surprised more people haven't thrown Chipper Jones the pitching threw him on the first pitch last time off-speed stuff slow pitches because he's they keep trying to throw it there and he keeps wearing it out fast balls away he wears it out nobody has put him on an off-speed diet yet one ball one strike he grounded out to second his first time up don't see that very often with chipper do you know you don't he gets the barrel of the bat on the ball whether it's inside he drags his hands through outside he gets it out there he just doesn't hit that many right around that blue mark [Music] already a career-high in home runs with a good chance at getting over 40 mannix a third 2 ounce in a tie game the one one over the mound charging at Kennedy didn't get a run scores chipper beats out the infield roller gets his 91st RBI and the Braves take a two to one lead the two very important things happen to manufacture that run Maddox getting over to third and Chipper Jones hustling from the get-go Kennedy took a little extra time there's an off-speed breaking ball but Chipper Jones smells a base hit right away he goes hard the whole way so Atlanta on top by a run after the infield hit by Chipper Jones Maddox gets a chance to take a breather and the Braves dugout and Brian Jordan will be the batter [Music] Jordan struck out on the first [Music] two runs on four hits for Atlanta one run three hits for the Cardinals one ball one strike got an icy delivery for an overhand curveball doesn't stays tall comes up and over uses his leverage well it doesn't give him velocity but it can help him locate down [Music] [Applause] toward third I kept will go the short route well that was close to second base but Chipper Jones called out battled it for land on the bottom half of the third inning they manufacture a run around a pair of singles infield hit driving in the go-ahead run 200 lad as we head to the fourth [Music] it's top of the fourth inning and it's time for our Aflac trivia question which player recorded the highest single-season batting average in the 20th century highest single-season batting average with enough batting averages to qualify nothing best to qualify for the title hmm that's a good one very good we go to the fourth inning in a two to one game and Ray Lankford will lead it off was it rants Mullenix he didn't have that many at-bats against thank for the strikeout victim in the first inning Maddox gets the call err it's Owen - worked him inside first time up now he's worked him outside change up for strike one fastball down and away for strike two one ball two strikes Greg going for his 18th win the night juntos got a chance to win 20 for the first time since 1993 his first year in Atlanta he's won 19 twice since then 18 last year been a 20-game winner twice in his career 92 with the Cubs 93 with Atlanta white at 20 both of those years and you'll get four or five more starts after tonight so a chance even though the season got off to kind of a rocky start for him for a career-high single-season win total for Greg here's the 3-2 grounded foul got to his credit when he struggled early he didn't look to put a bandaid on it he just kept fine-tuning fine-tuning till he got it it was a matter of inches anyway so he stayed with his way of doing it bow back Braves have won five out of six from the Cardinals this year [Music] Langford and strikes for the second time there in strikeout of the game for Maddox and the batter will be Craig Kent who struck out his first time up pretty good pitcher sitting down in the front row here Hall of Famer good friend Gaylord Perry part of an event there's a development company that develops Homes and Communities doing some events all around the country there's Gaylord 314 wins in his career including a few here in Atlanta he spent one year in a Braves uniform and an absolute delight to be around I always enjoy him anytime and we I've had the pleasure of doing some appearances with him in the last couple of years he's a beauty boy got some great stories yes he does yes he does do on breaking ball Maddox over to Klesko to gun seven in a row sat down now by Greg and Adam Kennedy will be the batter he got a base hit his first time up one of the youngsters around whom the Cardinals hope to build in the next few years in his third full year in the organization he was their first-round pick in 97 out of Cal State Northridge and a career 4:14 batting average in college he really has an exaggerated follow-through in his swing when he swings and misses you'll see that kind of finish a lot especially on pitches down it's almost like a golf follow-through boon over to first and a very easy inning again for Greg Maddux as he gets the Cardinals 1 to 3 for the second inning in a row and we head to the bottom of the fourth [Music] beautiful night here in Atlanta Braves lead a two-to-one reminder of our Aflac trivia question there it is did you remember that in 1924 Rogers Hornsby at 4:24 played for the Cardinals from 1915 to 1926 and and again in 33 he also played for st. Louis in the American League from 33 to 37 but the highest batting average ever recorded was by Hugh Duffy Boston Braves 438 that was in 1894 the ball - no strikes and Ryan Klesko leading off the fourth Westco flied to right his first time I think we'll ever see a 400 hitter again I don't and I'll tell you not that there aren't players with the ability to hit 400 but then you'd see the same guy four in five times now you're gonna see starter and then you're gonna see a guy in the seventh and you're going to see a different guy in the ninth and you're gonna see a lot of matchups with closers so I think it's gonna be awfully awfully difficult one and two on Klesko how about you I don't know you're been said there been guys that have come close Tony Gwynn came close George Brett came close and that's been in the modern era there's a flyball shallow center drew plays a very deep centerfield and anything hit even a moderate centerfield drew has to come a long ways for [Music] but those guys are special guys who hit almost equally well against lefties and righties so it would happy we got a victim of the matchups it would have to be a guy that has that same hitting philosophy just going to all fields and right and that's not very glamorous no they're not many around like that anymore don't want to count it doesn't make the highlights Andrew the pop fly double that dropped him the second inning see Castilla has gone to some tape on his fingers there's a it's dark in the air sometimes it's hard to see the signs high in the air left-center again but it's dark now easier to pick the ball ups almost the same spot the other one was it here's your National League batting race right now Larry Walker going for a second straight title 20-point lead almost a Bobby Abreu there are four surprises in the top five the only one that really isn't a surprise if you had put together your top five in March Abreu Gonzales Casey and Everett would not have been in the top five what a great year for the four of them now Jose Hernandez [Music] two outs bases empty [Music] two balls in a strike now on Hernandez go for his last seven to do [Applause] yeah back in that 400 hitter which we have not had since Ted Williams back in the 40s it would not surprise me if somebody somebody came along I don't know if it's a current guy or if it's somebody it's not gonna start their career 20 years away from now that just when you think that you've seen the last of something along comes a player that proves you're wrong and it would not it would not surprise me if somewhere down the road a hitter comes along it would take a run at it that's gonna be a base hit centerfield but I think it's gonna have to be done one of those type of guys in there and that many around and they're probably never warm any around in any era of baseball's gonna have to be one of those kind of guys who is just addicted to hitting like Ted Williams was like Tony Gwynn is a guy who spends almost every waking hour of the day thinking about the pitchers he's going to be facing that night studying tapes studying the spin of the ball and scouting reports and tendencies one ball no strikes on Eddie Perez two men out runner at first Braves had at least one hit in each inning off of Stephenson have 5 on the game now and I think he's gonna have to be a little selfish 5-4 forced to get Hernandez we'll go back to that when we get to the fifth inning it's 2 to 1 Atlanta [Music] winding down a Labor Day weekend here at Turner Field is the gun of the fifth inning it'll be Alberto can't steal heating it off we showed you Gaylord Perry must be celebrity night here at the park a number of the folks who travel with the Statler Brothers cut your music group are here and Jerry Reed country music legend had open-heart surgery about 12 weeks ago part of his rehab is to come down and take in a braise game we wish him continued success and recovery is a big Braves fan he looked great and to have all of them here Castillo a base hit his first time up and he takes the strike at the outside corner a country music country music people are real baseball fans and we hear from a lot of a lot of our Braves fans our buddy Bill Anderson oh eight been seeing Bell since the mid-70s one ball one strike on Castillo that's the same pitch you got a base hit on back in the second this time it's an out just a little bit lower in the strike zone this time but that's the point Maddox is making about it guys he calls a KERS if they can reach it they're gonna swing at it this balls way outside and down one-handed guess he figured that was gonna be the best pitch he was gonna get from Greg Maddux tonight Maddux works so quickly we better get into your statement about it the next 400 hitters gonna have to be a little selfish because I think that you're you see unselfish players who will give themselves up a lot of times l you say okay make it out get him over I think that the difference in 400 and not hitting 400 is is it's got to be have to be a guy who's gonna have to go up there every day so I'm gonna get a base hit and may not be a good situational hitter but it's gonna be a great pure hitter McEwing a sac fly to right to account for the Cardinals only run back in the second and it's all into on Joe McKuen [Music] still nothing into [Music] Micky Ewing stays alive you'll hack at some in the neighborhood to oniy he had a good at-bat his last time up what he had to do is avoid striking out get the ball in the outfield the only outfield out recorded was he'd sacrifice fun it is still Owen too spent a long time getting to the major leagues he began in the Cardinal organization back in 1992 didn't even get as high as double-a until 1995 as high as triple-a until 1998 Hernandez on the first two a and Mannix on a roll right now is Emerson's the base hit by Castillo ten straight retired Garrett Stevenson bounced to the pitcher is only time up Terry Mulholland against Darren Oliver tomorrow night Kevin Millwood against Rick Ankiel on Wednesday night Braves off on Thursday John Smoltz will open the series in San Francisco Friday the o1 Giants may have lost one of their starters for a while today yeah Hernandez and Hernandez went down today grabbed his left side and just trying to stretch it and flex it wanted to now in the Cardinal pitcher [Music] that's all for stevenson that's all for the Cardinals that's four strikeouts for Greg Maddux and he has now retired 11 straight going to the bottom half of the fifth inning Braves up by Riders [Music] hi again everyone skip carry Joe Simpson with you as we go to the bottom of the fifth maybe Greg Maddux should break his wrist the first day of spring training the lay pitches since he's had that prevalent last two outings have been absolutely brilliant I think he's getting more movement on his fastball now than he was prior to the injury to but he's also getting ahead in the count and while the Cardinals were at least from a strategy standpoint it appeared early on they were trying to jump on the first pitch and it paid off he's not giving them much to hit on the first pitch right now and he's retired what is it 10 or 11 in a row as a result not a bad hitter tonight either no and they lead things off here in the bottom of the fifth 2-1 Atlanta high score [Music] Garret Stevenson spits well in his own right Owen won the count Cincinnati has won houston is losing the Mets have won the Braves are winning Owen Tudor Maddox [Applause] that's easy one away Stephenson's pitching very much like he did in st. Louis when he was mixing his curveball and changeup in with his fastball gave up only one run to the Braves in eight innings and that was in the first inning and he's got better control tonight too that night he walked five batters which is the most he's walked in over any of us starts tell you what else he's doing the Cardinals aren't going anywhere this year who knows about next year but he's making a strong case to go into spring training penciled into that starting rotation absolutely you can win a job one year for the next o & 2 tough thing for those starters in recent days they have pitched great for the Cardinals over their last 11 games in ER a of right around two and a half runs but they've only got a 2 and 3 record over those 11 starts Gerald Williams has a homer and a sacrifice in the game [Applause] kid huh what a play can he throw him out he made the tag did McGuire what a play by Paquette that's highway robbery and jerry' looks over there like how did you do that good question especially when you ever been playing over there much it's only his fourth start at third base and this was a bullet tried to run a fast ball in on Gerald but as Randy Johnson discovered yesterday Gerald's got quite a bit of bat speed and he was able to turn on that pitch but robbed of a hit Brett bill and corks one fouled on that third base side Owen 1 the count [Applause] two out nobody on one and one the count a couple Cardinals making fashion statements tonight Castillo with his robot look behind the plate all that great catching equipment and Paquette with his two-tone glove down there third base caste that looks like he should be on the bridge of the enterprise in the right field base hit [Applause] bread hits a bullet foul down the third base line and then he just lights went off brakes has been hooked like he was looking over in the on-deck-circle or the Braves dugout laughing on the way to first that was a measly looking hit but down and away and Brent was kind of swinging toward left and hit this one right you'll take it Chipper Jones the banner [Music] mcguire gives him some grief about that particular hip popped him up on the infield who wants a Renteria makes the play and the inning comes to a close one hit no runs no errors and one left at the end of five two one Atlanta guess what it's time for Budweiser game somewhere here we go to the sixth inning Braves on top two two one Creek Maddox has retired to last eleven he has faced he got some help right away as Gerald Williams hit a leadoff home run Chipper Jones beat out an infield hit for an RBI hit in the third inning at your Budweiser game summary and one note on top of Maddox is 11 in a row he has not walked a better in 25 innings [Music] Edgar rentería leads off the sixth inning here 58 pitches is all here through five innings and now he has thrown 14 first pitch strikes and only five balls one on one the car Renteria out of Barranquilla Colombia one hop chopper two chipper wanna I know the fans got a look at Gaylord Perry who's in the Park tonight funny thing happened before the game started Rene lachemann who managed Gaylord in Seattle came up to the home plate area when the lineups were being exchanged and asked Randy Marsh the crew chief to go over to Gaylord and check his hat make sure he didn't have any foreign substances the second though you didn't get to see the day he used the rosin ball pitch against Ken Griffey senior that's the funniest thing I've seen in baseball yeah he went to the rosin bag and the rosin bag on the rosin bag and when he threw the ball all you could see was this huge explosion of white and out of it came the ball and Griffey hit a little dribbler to second he went nuts a 1o pitch they had to change the rules Gaylord got him again uh-huh here's a beauty to play for and against he would not at this point in time be a good pinch runner no I would not ground ball foul past third it's one and two I was his 3,000th strikeout congratulations I was also in centerfield the day one his 300th game played behind him for Seattle that was against the Yankees that was quite a night two and three of the count - JD drew he's 1 for 2 in the game I want to wish a speedy recovery to our friend Thomas Dixon who mans the door the press box 4 is one of the fine security officers here good play by Klesko picture covers Ryan's not afraid to let those pictures work today Thomas had a mild heart attack but his own mouths bouncing back fine and I hope we'll see him back here at work real soon as a nice man absolutely hope you're getting well sin [Applause] mark mcgwire the matter he has popped a short and on a check swing bounced weakly to third but you know how dangerous he is well he gave the fans who came here early today what they wanted he had two balls in the club level just below the coca-cola plaza and he hit one ball off the 1997 pennant it's on the railing of the 755 club as you see the Braves have a shift against him and he comes up empty he are to get a piece of the action at Kodak go with it yeah flashbulbs pop I don't know how he can see the ball with that much distraction right in their own - he threw him a fastball away that's where the Braves at pitched it don't change now it's been working it's not just the professional photographers it's all the amateurs in the stands that have those flashbulbs up puffing blowing away one and two [Applause] Braves by one Braves have six hits Cardinals have three correct shakes off two signs that's a rarity might throw a fastball [Applause] downstairs 2 & 2 he threw that breaking ball in but his heart wasn't in it was no he wanted to make sure that that wasn't anywhere close to shoot op hi back to what's working they're gonna go away with him the two to check three called fastball outside corner McGwire didn't like it but he's out on strikes that's five for Maddux in his troubles against the Braves continued 1 2 3 and the 6th Maddox is set down 12 13 14 men in a row bottom of the sixth - wanted lemon we go to the bottom half of the sixth inning Braves on top to one an imposter pull that up a little bit son and they Brian Jordan growth poster Brian leads it off here and almost gets hit one ball no strength squirt of first McGuire has it pitcher covers one down Jordan now low for his last 13 he's playing hurt and it's really showing here lately I think it showed on his throw to the plate that I do for the first time he got rid of the ball quickly on that sacrifice fly by McEwing but his throw was quite a bit off the mark by comparison to his normal throws Ryan Klesko the banner Ryan flied to deep right his first time flied to center a second time takes a strike at the knees he thought it was well Owen one [Music] strike two ko that's about the only fastball I think he'll get from Stevenson is just one to show him away and then work on the off-speed stuff hit hard into right field he threw him a breaking ball and he hit it hard I don't know to pitch plus goes aboard and Andruw Jones the batter a pop fly double and a fly to center has been what Ryan was thinking too because he stayed back pretty well on that pitch and even though might have been a ball outside he was able to reach out and pull it to right see where the target is might have been off off the plate time is called as the field has tilted drastically to the right with both Klesko and McGwire over there the first place [Music] two big strong guys Owen one to Andrew well I still can't figure out why interference was not called on that play that rundown play that Andrew was tagged out on back in the second inning [Music] oh and to the count infielder gets in your way when you're in a run-down and you collide in the base path that's automatic [Music] Alberto Castillo bluffed a throw but had no place to throw it Robo catcher curve outside even stood up to and to Jose Hernandez is next same two teams tomorrow excuse me Joe Terry Mulholland against Darren Oliver was just thinking about Castillo catching in the series up in st. Louis he didn't wear this mask he wore a traditional mask pretty good pitch look at McGwire staring in at the home plate umpire he disagreed with that called third strike on him and now he's wondering why Stephenson didn't get this pitch there was hide outside one reason as was the pitched on which McGwire was prone out the reason he's wearing that tonight it's the crayon great line left field base hit with a runner going twice go heads for third he'll make it easily and through halfway to second now he retreats in the Braves have something going here first and third and one out good piece of hitting by Andrew look like a pretty good pitch at away from him fastball that did come back to the middle part of the plate started off away and then came back to him and he ripped it part of the jose hernandez package is great versatility part of it is good power and part of it is that he strikes out a good bit and that's what Garrett Stevenson will be trying to get here first and third one on the infield back hopeful of turning a double play back at least at short ends second pocket even with the bag and McGwire holds the runner at first and with the infielders pinched up the middle a little bit for a double play ball that grounder heat up the middle last time up may not get through Faizabad due to pop one runner going pitch low throw short hops down there and andrew is in but now what will the Cardinals do they have first base open and they have a catcher hitting next who does not run well that was a pretty good play by Adam Kennedy watch him on the steal he's got to keep an eye on the runner at third and then catch this short hop which he did but now he's got to find the runner at third he know he didn't get the runner behind him he knows that by this point good play by the second baseman yeah they're gonna put him on and load him up for Eddie Perez he almost threw it to the backstop [Music] the walk for Stevenson will be his first to the night and it is of the intentional variety so the bases are loaded with one out for Eddie Perez who has grounded to third and grounded to third they'll be trying to get one in the air here bases-loaded one out we're in the sixth already tomorrow night will be our last telecast on TBS for quite some time [Music] [Applause] not until the 17th of the month we'll be televised again on the superstation up and in one ball no strengths almost hit him that would have been so bad either they able to produce to run but I doubt that Stevenson will try that again for fear of hitting him that was awfully close and he can look middle to plate away here now the infield is about halfway I wonder why I would be more likely to play back with Eddie hitting than with Hernando [Applause] I don't know where he got that move but that's not gonna fool anybody especially when the first baseman's not even holding the runner on yeah even McGuire and Paquette have backed up to go for a double play at second and first popped up but foul and out of play there was that pitch away Houston is rallied as you almost knew they would and they've taken a 6-4 lead over the Phillies y'all have all the scores for you and it happening yourself to one Atlanta the Braves threatened to get more the Mets won their game today for nothing but get Sarina something off-speed here no I popped short right-field long run McEwing in foul territory he's got it here comes the runner here's the throw bad throw he's safe and runners are at 2nd and 3rd for Maddux it's a sacrifice fly for Eddie Perez McEwing was in foul territory but I think too close to fair territory to be sure he was running hard over there I watched him throw from the outfield today and their warm-up practices skipped and he does have more of an infielders arm than an outfielders arm especially from right field he's accurate for the most part but he doesn't get much on his throws so Eddie got it in the air and it's a sacrifice fly and a base hit for Maddux here would mean two more runs it's 3-1 Atlanta one and one the count good heads-up baserunning by andrew jones and Hernandez - to tag up and take the base on the high throw over McGuire's head foul tipped it back off the space mask of Castilla [Applause] drinks it the ball solidly each time up tonight and as a result Stevenson was trying to jam him with that pitch way out of play it's still one and two [Music] RBI number 23 for Eddie on the year got it good curveball Maddox caught looking and the inning is over the Braves pick up a run however they do it on two hits and leaves two we've played six Braves lead at three to one [Music] [Music] ray lankford leads it off Lankford has struck out twice Glenn diamond I produce it or 90s the coordinating producer Braves baseball as many of you know and Danny Regan is our director Paula Fishman is our graphics operator Howard Feinberg is our eldest operator Howard and Elvis go hand in hand and our booth assistant stage manager lonesome loafer pitches outside one ball no strikes one-on-one found sorry skip it's interesting that Langford got red-hot after the Braves left town started a seven-game hitting streak but he was 2 for 13 against the Braves in st. Louis with four strikeouts and he's fanned twice tonight and he's two thirds of the way there again the rumor is not true however that lonesome blew through his last eight was the same year Rogers Hornsby at 424 the 1 2 pitch to and to the camp the 2-2 pitch strike three called outside corner Wow Langford didn't think much of that either [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and he's fought firing a parting salvo and Here Come Landsman and Larissa to keep him in the game Larissa is firing a few shots at Carlson too while he's in it and he's gonna get thrown out of the game if he's not careful Eddie setup off the plate outside merci that's not borderline that's way south of the border creig pot kept the better that's out of play on one [Applause] I felt in st. in Cincinnati that and his first start back after the wrist injury that Gregg's fastball and his cutter were moving better than they had all season and they're moving well tonight a Langford thinks that strike zone's a little wide that's right oh and to the count 16 in a row knocked over but greg maddux he's allowed just three hits he leads three to one the cats out of there he doesn't like it either [Music] that's two up three Street called third strikes rheumatics and if they're gonna give it to you you got to go right back to it that was closer to the corner and the one before as John Smoltz once said in a similar spot where the umpire with a similar strikes him first the pitch he said you don't have to be Einstein if they give you that to keep going there one ball no strikes tap down the first baseline plus goes steps on the bag didn't even make great cover just like that where the inning is over no hits no runs no errors and no one left we go to the bottom half of the seventh inning near score Atlanta 3 st. Louis won [Music] might be where he got his gear vital for the seventh Gerald Williams takes inside one ball no strength a lot of folks heading for home early tonight after the long weekend 40 1678 fine crowd on hand to know the cup line drive Renteria a good play to his right one odd jeralds hit the ball hard all night long as only one hit to show for it but that left the bomb part had to reach for this one a little bit but still hit it hard he's getting better swings off right-handed pitchers now too since he's been in the lineup every day Bret Boone the banner [Applause] [Music] one on one the count then that's one three nothing the Braves are winning three two one two and a half going into the day's play was the Atlanta lead and a bunch of people on the talk-show dough and around town today saying is the Braves morale gonna be affected by that loss yesterday I don't think people really understand it the difference between baseball and football football once a week you've got six days to think about it good or bad baseball you just wipe it off and go on you have to you don't have a job you'll go crazy yeah you don't have time to sulk about it Renteria Sunday huh two down if it were a once a week game yeah then it might have some lingering effects because it kind of Fester's for a week but not in baseball although there were some quotes in the paper today that surprised me one from John Rocker that I had to ask him about tonight before the ballgame because it it surprised me a little bit his comments after the game last night which were I'm sure after the game in the heat of battle it's easy to fly off a little bit but one of the things that I had to asking about to make sure this quote was right was in his quote he said we got the win for the team got the save for myself and held the Mets for another day and then to have an error like that cost us the game the thing that struck me about that was in the 8 years I've been here I've never ever after a game similar to that heard any Braves player talk about the ramifications of that game and how it affected them personally and when I asked him about it his quote to me was the first for everything there's a drive deep right-field did he get enough yes into the bullpen a line drive homer for tipper go and it's 4 to 1 and that's thirty eight homers 92 RBI boys making a push for that MVP it may be too late [Applause] Retta hot cookie yes he is and the RBIs keep piling up third home run in two days he may not get his walk tonight but he got his truck right into the bullpen so Atlanta builds it to a four-to-one advantage what's the old cliche there's no int well the point the point of that is that this Braves clubhouse has always been one that if somebody messes up they everybody absorbs the brunt of it it's not just one person who suffers for it and one other thing is that when John Rocker blew that game in Montreal and gave up five runs in the ninth including a home run to Vladimir Guerrero no one mentioned his name in the paper and about how he lost the game everybody takes responsibility one had one run no heirs none left at the end of seven four one Atlanta Texas over the White Sox in Game one Alberto Castillo takes a strike and New York trailing Anaheim in the bottom half of the third inning the second game of White Sox Texas just getting underway as is Detroit and Oakland log on to CNN si.com to check out the outcome of those games [Applause] do one pitch [Applause] a ball on the strength [Applause] groundball good play chipper one down Maddox continues to roll merrily along the last hit II allowed in the last baserunner was a one-out single by Castillo back in the second since then eighteen men have gone in order and you see 84 pitches 60 strikes this is vintage Greg Maddux last two starts have been more like him and yeah I could only remember think two three ball counts tonight one was to the pitcher yeah it was Owen too and went 3 and 2 before he got [Applause] little high - and on [Applause] how about that - game home run record by Cincinnati that suck Bazin 14 homers in two days we got out of there at the right time [Music] two balls and a strike [Music] [Applause] I chopper off the plate but foul it's 2 & 2 McEwan's gotta let a free pitch preparation say that we pitch preparation three pitch preparation three pitched preparation one of them is practice swinging at a pitch about helmet hi just in case Maddox players went up there they ain't meant Cunniff eat nervous up there looks like he's not a wasp in shorts [Laughter] - to pitch just missed outside Maddox thought he had it [Applause] he's done a great job for their ballclub this year he's played every position but pitcher and catcher but he's done such a good job offensively that even when they decided to use their young phenom at second Adam Kennedy this last month they can't take him out of the lineup he's playing right tonight groundball funny looking hot throw-in time to down let's go reacted well he started after the ball and slammed on the brakes and got back to the bag there's the second out ahead of a laugh after that foul ball in a moment ago we always talked about how our ball boys and bat boys hustle David McKay was just casually going over to pick that ball up but one of the bat boys sailed right in front of him he jumped about a foot in the air a blur Thomas Howard comes out they hit here for his pitcher Garrett Stevenson who once again has pitched a wonderful game but so far has nothing to show for it except perhaps his first loss of the year [Applause] 19 in a row knocked over by Greg Maddux that should be 20 and it is in the inning is over 1 2 3 nothing doing bottom of the eighth inning with your score Braves 4 Cardinals 1 we go to the bottom half of the eighth-inning as you look at the upcoming schedule take a good look at that TBS up there at the top because you're not gonna see that again for a while we won't be back on TBS after tomorrow night until the 17th but we'll have several games on the Braves Network as you see big games coming up out west against the Giants that may knock out the Giants if the Braves play well out there because they had closed the gap on the Arizona Diamondbacks and thought they got some help yesterday from the Braves only to see that it was the first time I've ever seen anybody rally after there was three outs and nobody on in the ninth well it's just one of those things that's baseball Manny Aybar is on the pitch for st. Louis as we go to the bottom half of the eighth inning [Music] Stevenson went seven innings nine hits four runs he walked one he threw a homerun ball [Applause] - homerun balls [Music] and they struck out too Klesko 1 4 3 2 strength single is last time just a little bit inside 1 & 1 the count Andrew Jones is next looking ahead to the ninth inning top of the order due up there for st. Louis [Applause] Manny Aybar first came to the big leagues for st. Louis as a starter this year he's been in 57 games and only one of those was a start throws hard as 70 strikeouts in 90 innings 2 & 2 the County took a little off there Brian foul tipped it into the glove of Albert Oh a steal [Applause] by the way there was some controversy about our Aflac trivia question but Phil comes through again yeah one baseball publication well hit right field that goes the queuing is there just shy of the track he's got it one up one publication had nap what nap Lajoie or lingerie if you prefer hitting 426 in 1901 but the Elias Sports Bureau and the Sporting News record record book both have him at four twenty two and so we are sticking with Phil's answer Rogers Hornsby with 420 for being the leading hitter we thank all those who agreed and disagreed for their interest but we think we've got it rain it is confusing though and the books differed Andrew is two out of three those Elias folks don't miss much but a lot of stock in what they but they tell us [Applause] oh and one the count Andrew [Applause] it's even now balling the strength one thing that's different about Andrews stance and his approach to hitting compared to when he first came up is the angle of his bat when he starts he's got it flat almost parallel to the ground he used to hold it straight up in the air it shortened his swing some IPOP on the infield who wants a balk cat calls for it too Jose Hernandez the batter 1 for 2 with a walk 40 1678 pay [Music] activity in the Atlanta bullpen [Music] yeah John Rocker is still throwing out there tap foul back that's the other thing Joe but his quotes fact of the matter is there was still a runner at second and two out and if he gets Tony Womack he's still got to save and we've still got to win or if he gets the after they walked the next guy forgets the next guy it's a tie game and you still might win it so well that's I guess that's the point of my my comments tonight is that there was a joint effort involved their catcher made a bad throw first baseman didn't cover in time and a pitcher didn't bail both of his teammates out so there's a lot of blame to be spread around but in this Clubhouse in this Braves team in eight years I had never heard that for me you know one you went as a team you lose as a team there's plenty of blame to go around when things go bad and there's plenty of credit to go around when things go good and it was credit to Tom Glavine who lost a win out of that you know that's happened to him before I saw he and Chris in the tunnel when I was walking home I went over to commiserate with him I just said you know you get around this game for a while you think you've seen it all in the second you think that he said boy you got that right let us smile oh yeah what's it done is done well they bounced back tonight and I have three outs to get again full count on Hernandez Eddie Perez will be next steal through that one back harder than it came in of his mad at Manny or mad that he didn't get the call in the dirt pull I think that means throw a strike [Applause] and he does in the inning is over one two three nothing doing in the eighth we go to the ninth last chance for the Cardinals they trail at four to one [Music] I would go to the ninth inning and the Braves leading four to one and a reminder that coming up next on TBS a teenage girl learns a thing or two about dancing as Patrick Swayze shows her the moves in dirty dancing that's coming up after the game on the superstation that's a good it's a good movie and it's not dirty at all no hardly Walt Weiss is at shortstop Brian hunter is at first Greg Maddux goes for the complete game on the top of the order for st. Louis and Renteria takes his strength [Applause] to say that Maddox has been in complete control as understating but I don't know what to say he shoots for his third complete game one two hasn't really had to work hard all night faced four batters in the first and faced five in the second since then three up and three down every enemy 20 in a row amazing [Music] Renteria asks for timeout missed inside a ball and two strengths he's tried that pitch a couple of times tonight once to mark mcgwire now wants to Renteria just missed went back to the bread-and-butter outside little chopper past the mound tough play for boon clothes got him one up 21 in a row tough play for Brett and one similar that to one he had in the series against the Diamondbacks that went off the end of his glove a little bit and it is a do-or-die play with especially with a fast runner like Renteria and he made a good play there his JD drew one for three he got a hit in the first Adam Kennedy Alberto Castillo got him in the second and that's been it that must have been low one ball no strikes [Music] the Braves will go if they hang on here to six and six out of seven against the Cardinals with two to play one-on-one the count 1 & 2 he's had everything working tonight and in great spots [Music] an identical record coming into the night's game as he had this same stage last year off the end of the bat but foul Eddy tried his best to get to it but it landed in foul territory going into his 29th start last year he was 17 and 6 this year he was 17 and 6 the difference about a point and a half on his er a and a 198 er a at this point last year what was wrong with that man oh man well you rarely see Oh Eddie come hopping out of there like that when he's really sure about one but this is one call that did not go their way they've gotten several off the plate tonight this one came back that's right there that's brutal hunter slips recovers two out Maddox doesn't lose his cool when he doesn't get the call and disposes of the hitter here's Mark McGwire the last hope 22 in a row set down by Maddux [Applause] seven ground balls involving the pitcher in first baseman tonight [Applause] I don't know what chipper said but did you see that look you got watching McGuire see if you had anything to say to the umpire the Braves put their shifter on and now Eddie Perez goes to the mound [Music] [Applause] Ronnie wants to delay this game a little bit so the fans will feel they got their money's worth we have zipped through this one to this point I don't know what they're talking about here with a three run lead and McGuire up there other than I wonder if knowing Gregg like you say maybe they're getting out of here too quick and maybe wants to experiment with something they wants to try something see if they go away from what's been working [Applause] it's a furtive chipper 23 in a row to end the game and the brig's win it's four to one oh hi what a job by a Greg Maddux no hits no runs no errors and nobody left Braves win it by a final of four to one well as you might suspect our autozone player of the game is a guy you're looking at there Greg Maddux no walks they retired the last 23 batters he faced in fact he is only when he hasn't walked anybody over his last four starts so Greg Maddux is on quite a roll as he picks up his third complete game of the year and he wins his 18th game of the season
