2004 World Series, Game 4: Red Sox at Cardinals

ah yes it is game for in st. Louis but in Boston it is all about the Red Sox from the Statehouse building in Boston where even Republicans and Democrats can agree on one thing go Sox at Faneuil Hall Red Sox fans are gathering in the hopes that 86 years of frustration are washed away in a single evening all that needs to happen is a Red Sox victory and as we look at Fenway Park the stadium is closed but the taverns are filling up in anticipation of a night many Red Sox fans have never experienced a Boston Red Sox World Championship but the New England faithful call themselves Red Sox Nation and if you don't believe it's true here's proof beginning with former Red Sox Steve Lyons hi Jeanne of course you know the Red Sox Nation extends far beyond Boston in fact all the way across the nation I'm a sunny McLean's right here in the heart of Los Angeles California and these fans have impacted this park for three straight weeks now hoping to taste a little piece of history they've been waiting for eighty-six years now we're going to send it way back east where Kenny Albert standing in a place at Red Sox President Larry lukina once called the evil empire Kenny lost even it'd be hard to believe but the Riviera Cafe so Red Sox women it was just a week ago that the fans got to see their beloved let's do exercise frustration for these fans right here in the heart of New York City oh boy of course this frustration rule double the umpires got a right attorney will be a home run Yankees normally get these kind of calls don't they not the Red Sox how about this call a rod slapping the ball out of the hand of Arroyo they call it safe at second base no they reverse it that call was called right by the umpires once again and how about the cutoff man Bill Miller reaching for it to the double up pools Manny Ramirez which is a cleanup man older throw this is a train point I'm talking about right here Jeff Suppan go or no go or no he goes back to third base second and third nobody have ground ball the right side that would have tied his score it didn't happen for all right you are not done because we got to break down tonight's pitchers Derek Lowe got it done against Yankees with sinkers and sliders I got the Yankees to expand his own chase bad pitches out of the zone that's not what the cartels have to do tonight they haven't make him come to him Jason Marquis has to do this throw strikes strike one strike two he's got a good fastball 94 95 pretty good change they got to minimize those walk so that's what he's done too much up in the postseason look at the pitchers in this series of starters a Red Sox 16 plus innings er a two seven the Cardinals 11 plus innings erra pushing 12 that's been the biggest difference for me the starting pitching the Cardinals at that gotten deeper as an average then three plus and X Marquis has to go deeper tonight and set up that Cardinal bullpen they only have one lefty in that bullpen and that's ray King that's a guy you got to pick the face David Ortiz you can lose him too early if they do it's all over so the starters have to get deeper so 'we came to face David Ortiz we talked about Jason Marquis being on the big the first time he's been on the big stage he didn't play in a Little League World Series just like another man out here tonight Jason Varitek Dave reserves at shortstop shortstop good stop it's a good thing they moved and can't pick on a little fence right handed right there a make the deal a tough play right here well oh he couldn't get out of the club I'll tell you what the heart and soul his balls Louis Cardinals fan her entire life and now one of country music's Gretchen Wilson Rossy can you see by the dawn's early light what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly sadly streaming and the Rockets red glare the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there oh say does that star-spangled banner oh yeah free on October 17th the self-proclaimed team of idiots were facing elimination in the ALCS for the second year in a row to their biggest nemesis the New York Yankees but in the span of four days they overcame of three games to nothing deficit to win something no other team had done in the history of major league baseball and now one went away they rest on the cusp of winning something that has eluded this franchise since 1918 well what's it gonna be tonight we welcome you to Busch Stadium where Cardinal fans are fumbling and wondering if this season will continue for at least one more day now watch the Boston Red Sox celebrate it came for on this 2004 Red Sox won went away I'm trying to do something that the franchise hasn't accomplished in 86 years and that is win a World Series and to this point for the first three games of this world series they have out hit they have out pitched and they have run the bases better than the st. Louis Cardinals in Tim McCarver I welcome you in and I'll say this the Red Sox have been given nothing in this series they have taken the first three games they have been relentless they just have not let the Cardinals get started they've scored in the first inning of every game the st. Louis Cardinals haven't even been ahead in any of the three games and the best way for them to get ahead is to get any production not more production but any production out of the middle three spots the four five and six hitters have one hit in the three games that was a bunt base hit by Jim Edmonds in Game one the Boston Red Sox have won seven consecutive postseason games the fans here in st. Louis hope that tonight is not the night the World Series comes to a close don't write yourself do your best we are in st. Louis but they're still kind of Numb there they're not sure how to act their team this close to finally winning it all to finally winning a World Series the fans like the Red Sox team they're confident but they're also cautious given their history and this tonight a total lunar eclipse for the first time during the World Series game so it would appear Joe for the Red Sox the planets are aligned alright Chris thank you very much and Jason Marquis is the man in the middle of all this action he has not been good this postseason here for the Red Sox brought to you by Citibank if you were paying attention last night you'll know it is the same Johnny Damon leads off then it's Cabrera batting second Manny Ramirez how hot is he hitting third David Ortiz at first put on a show in BP Varitek Miller Nixon Bellhorn and Derek Lowe tonight won the clincher Game seven of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium taking on Jason Marquis tonight and at both pitchers have this stuff tonight they'll throw a lot of ground balls two of the top five ground ball pitchers in Major League Baseball or opposing one another this evening Johnny Damon first up for Boston Damon Cabrera and Manny Ramirez you see the 94 miles per hour and Tim one of the things that marki has to guard against is getting too charged up he's a sinker ball pitcher he's got a very good fastball but trying to throw the ball through the wall is something that works against him after the first fastball of his down in the strike zone two fast balls up you don't get ground balls on high fastball two balls and a strike on Johnny Damon the Red Sox score first again what a start 1 2 nothing Boston here in game for Damon gets his first home run of this world series the one thing about ground balls they don't go out of the ballpark a high fastball jumped on by Damon to give the Red Sox Delaney Cabrera swinging bunt third-base side Rolen they out what a play by Scott Rolen my gosh this is the 2-1 fastball as you can see right around the letters followed by a 45 footer down the third-base line so the home run then the groundout and now Manny Ramirez digs in Ramirez at his 18th career postseason home run last night he has hit in 16 straight postseason games and marquise misses inside with ball one the numbers in this World Series for Ramirez and overall this postseason he is 20 of 56 Manny was out there to receive the Hank Aaron award prior to tonight's game for he wanted from the American League and Barry Bonds the winner from the National League and read Aaron is with us at the ballpark tonight that's too far inside two balls and a strike the last seven starts for Marquis coming in one and three with a 5.7 5er a 21 strikeouts 20 walks so far he has failed to go five innings in each of his two postseason starts that was here against Los Angeles and at Houston that's a bad ratio to whenever you see about the same number of walks as strikeouts for a pitcher during any duration falls behind Ramirez 3 & 1 with David Ortiz on deck great start for the Red Sox tonight Manny Ramirez takes a walk while we play here in the first inning baseball fans grab a cold fresh Budweiser it's game time game time tonight started with a home run by Damon and then the groundout by Cabrera this terrific play by Scott Rolen the difficulty on that play is that not only do you have to barehand it but you have to have the ball and throwing position when you barehanded Roland's one of the best at that boy David Ortiz now one-on-one out Ortiz 3 for 10 in this world series everything is up for marque yeah I think Tony LaRussa is one hitter away from getting Dan Haren up in the bullpen so the walk to Ramirez the crowd was taken right out of it after the home run by day and now it's 200 on Ortiz Marky had a very good regular-season 15 and 7 an ER AF 3 point 7 1 but at one point he was 14 and 4 heading into the month of September the team went one in four down the stretch and his er ei was well over five there are the numbers for the regular season but there's no doubt since the first it sets trying to get themselves back into it strike one on the outside corner one on one out two balls in a strike which was up but by the bat of Ortiz Ortiz is one guy in the Red Sox lineup where you can get away with the high fastball because he loves the ball down Varitek on deck Derek Lowe will be on the mound tonight for the Red Sox that's why the full count on 3 & 2 runner goes and artis flies it into left take a look at the defense this said the name Mabry he is making his first start this is how st. got the Red Sox off and running a 6-2 win strike one coming into this game the Red Sox had scored first in nine of 13 postseason games and they won all of them and they've scored first here tonight ah no one Varitek takes a breaking ball for a strike first breaking ball that marquee has grown and it was a good one Molina blocks ball one in the dirt and Ramirez has made a couple of Bluffs off first did so during the Ortiz at-bat and did on that last delivery to Varitek that fake break from first place moves the middle infielders and Renteria over to cover when Mira's head that fake break good play by Molina keeping that ball in front of him Archy started to walk away it's called inside 2 & 2 tailing fastball just misses inside that was close Varitek on 2 & 2 stays alive we have seen Johnny Damon struggle in the postseason we have seen Johnny Damon quit during the postseason and we have seen Johnny Damon hit a home run in this world series first leadoff home run in a World Series game since game four 2000 Varitek is gone but from New England to Baghdad Red Sox fans love the start for Boston tonight hello Derek Lowe on the mound for the Red Sox tonight in Game four and he misses to Tony Womack Lowe has had a very good postseason after initially being left out of the rotation he was a huge factor in the Red Sox beating the Yankees a strike to Womack one ball one strike he started Game four the ALCS left in the sixth inning with the lead that evaporated quickly after he left with Timlin on the mound as Womack lines one in the left center field a leadoff single and Womack back in the leadoff spot for the Cardinals for the first time since Game six of the NLCS starts it with a hit that's a tough play to time I think Cabrera may have jumped just a tad too soon now it's Larry Walker sometimes when you jump too soon on a ball like that you're coming down when the ball is going up ball one to Walker Larry Walker one of the few guys in the Cardinal lineup say they're hitting in this World Series Walker and fools and that's it Cardinals will run tonight on Derek Lowe 36 based stealers tried to steal off Derek Lowe this year 34 made it for the Red Sox tries to keep Derek would have been on first good play by the low pulse checks his swing and a foul ball strike one Coles has not driven in a run in this world series he is 14 RBIs and six home runs in the postseason and that's what he's done at home a 519 average here at Busch Stadium in the postseason the one thing that the the coaches of the Red Sox in Terry Francona want to do is make Lowe aware of the runners but not so aware that he's confused when he comes home you can bet to see that all right yeah that's the dicey thing about dealing with the psyche of a guy like Derek Lowe Red Sox had pools play perfect get out of play Tony LaRussa toyed with the idea of putting Renteria in the number two spot moving everybody back his space but he thought that that might look like a desperate move in charge of a club down three games to none yeah also toying with the idea of putting Larry Walker in the four hole runner at third two out one ball one strike from Derek Lowe the ruse is saying before this game I four out of his last 27 if you go back 27 games he's still hitting 323 a guy who last night chipped in with a two-out RBI hit he got the hit in the fourth inning after the base running blunder by all seen it a thousand times by now but then the next half inning the Red Sox doubled their lead on a two-out hit by Nixon I think the Red Sox have shown how important it is with the immediacy of your strike they they scored in the first inning they scored after the base running blunder in last night's ballgame and they scored with the 2-run home run that Bellhorn hit when the Cardinals tied it Game one Nixon shoots one into right-center field is going to skip for Nixon he's out there with Bellhorn coming up this ball is crushed over the head of Womack a fine played by Larry Walker to cut want to get it done with Bellhorn at the plate big home run in Game one follow that up with a two-out two-run double in game 2 runner at second one out one two nothing Boston here in the second to analog this is not a situation where you want to pitch around mark Bellhorn Terry Francona telling Derek Lowe that if Bellhorn gets on we're going to give you the bunt you will be bunting I would imagine up to two strikes even through two stripes the 2-1 pitch three balls and a strike from Marquis Tim about mark even in the first inning and here again in the second sign of a prolonged struggle will trigger action in the Cardinal bullpen where Danny Haren who's been so good in the postseason would likely be the first one home yeah the problem about tonight being down 3-0 you can't wait too long Bellhorn hits it into right field got it in front of it and hooked it foul the Cardinals pitched Matt Morris in Game two on short rest a because of Morris and his postseason experience in B because mark he has struggled so and now here down three games to none the Cardinals have to turn to Marquis to try and help their season could that'll put two on with one out to walk so far to go with one strike out for Jason Marquis and here's Derek Lowe Scott Rolen the captain of the infield gives these signs and he just wants marquee to throw a strike and the reason for that is they may have the wheel play on where Roland charges who holds charges and Renteria goes to third base it's an easy play to put on right now because you have a guy at the plate who doesn't handle the bat well Werner yes what do you say to these fans that have waited a whole lifetime for this moment well you know they've yearned for this and we know people who are 90 years old who said just one championship before I die and so this is for them this is for Little Leaguers and all across New England but I also want to thank Bo Epstein and Terry Francona this organization was remarkable and they were 11 and 3 in the postseason so it was just a remarkable run all right they're making off with a trophy so let's get down to mr. we didn't set out and spring train to get to this moment to lose is absolutely no consolation we thought we had a club that would give us a chance to play in October one two series to get here and get beat I don't care if it was four in a row or four out of seven and we were barely disappointed congratulate the Red Sox they outplayed us won a great competition but no he we were not happy to get you see the tape I you know I kept tried to watch the tape after the games I think that a lot of key moments when they had to make a pitch they did and we didn't have enough to swing it but I also What I remember best was during game 3 of the ALCS when the red sox where down big, there was an in game add for a hospital which was supposed to list a player's injury as part of the advertisement. They went with the Red Sox fan's broken hearts. I remember being so pissed off (after the 2003 debacle)... When things turned around at the end of game 4, it was this weird whirlwind of 8 wins in something like 13 days and it was over.

And under a red eclipse moon. It was perfect (except for Drew Barrymore running onto the field).

1986, I had just turned 10 when the Sox lost and devastated me. 2004, my stepson was 10 and we got to enjoy that win together.

Sports can be an amazing bonding moment.

i'll never forget that. I was 14 when they won. After 2003 I thought i was in for a lifetime of disappointment like everyone else. Then I get 2 WS in 4 years!

My Dr who I see for my foot is married to Foulke's sister. I was lucky enough to get a signed lithograph from Foulke. There's only ten of them, apparently. I had my twin boys the night they won that pennant.
