1995 NLDS, Game 1: Braves at Rockies

the Atlanta Braves began their run of both seasoned magic in 1991 rising from worst to first and advancing all the way to Game seven of the World Series they made it again in 1992 in most dramatic fashion a third straight try in 1993 ended early as the Braves filed to the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Championship Series now they're back for another World Series quest deep in pitching and led by 19 game winner Greg Maddux their first test the upstart Colorado Rockies three-year-olds in this angel game but already compared to some of baseball's great offensive teams with their collection of black Street bombers their dream to upset the most dominant team of the 90s in the 1995 division series excitement could not be riding any higher than it is in Denver or in just its third year of existence the Colorado Rockies have made it into postseason play and tonight they play host in the opening game of the division series with the Atlanta Braves here at Coors Field hi everybody along with Larry Dierker Pete bad we're at welcoming you to Denver and Larry for anyone who felt that the wild-card concept in baseball wouldn't work they should come to this town well I was in Chicago and the Astros and Cubs that worked there I think it worked with the Mariners I think it worked with the Angels it worked with the Yankees a lot of folks all across America think the wild-card concept worked pretty well one team that didn't have to worry about that was the Atlanta Braves they clinched their division all the way back on September 13th and have been planning for this for three weeks now and again this year the strength of the Atlanta Braves revolves around their pitching and the pitching has just been magnificent what can you say four years in a row they've got Maddux Glavine and Smoltz they've got Wohlers to close it out if you don't get into their middle relief you're in big trouble it'll be Greg Maddux on the mound for Atlanta in tonight's game what's it like to have a pitcher like this going for your team every fifth day his record says that he's just about the best that ever pitched I mean back to back yeah ER A's of under 1.6 and that's unheard of and the only other guy to do 1.8 I think was Walter Johnson back to back and that goes back a hundred years Greg Maddux by the way with only two losses this year but one of them came and his only start against the Colorado Rockies he'll be opposed tonight by right-hander Kevin Ritz had a strong second half of the Rockies finished with a record of 11 and 11 with Larry Dierker when you talk about the Colorado Rockies how they build a ballclub a little bit differently around this ballpark around their offense yes they certainly do it they've got the sluggers to prove it they call the Blake Street Bombers and they've all got over 35 or 30 home runs and if you try to pitch around one of them you might pay double it's a brand new week in baseball history the start of the division series four of them going on and we'll have coverage all night long our studio hostess tonight is Anna storm Game one of the best of five Division Series between the Atlanta Braves and the Colorado Rockies about to begin here at Coors Field in Denver Colorado and the owners of both clubs are here Ted Turner along with wife Jane Fonda attending the very first playoff game of the season for the Atlanta Braves and behind the other dugout Jerry McMorris the owner of the Colorado Rockies who has guided his team into postseason play in just his third year alongside him Peter Coors and now let's take a look at tonight's Budweiser Atlanta Braves starting lineup the Braves had a pretty standard batting order all season long that doesn't change Grissom Lemke Jones for Griff justice Klesko O'Brian Blauser and Greg Maddux and they face right-hander Kevin Ritz and routes a sinker slider specialist he throws the hard stuff that's the stuff that works best in this ballpark first pitch of the night to Marquis Grissom in the dirt ball one Kevin rents a record of 11 and 11 during the regular season and may have earned this start against the Atlanta Braves Larry with an outstanding relief appearance against the Braves their last trip into Colorado Colorado when he worked for perfect innings in relief a big strong guy he throws hard up over 90 miles an hour most of the time at times he's got a very good hard slider Marquis Grissom taxes not the count too marquis at 2:58 during the regular season with 12 home runs he drove in 42 he's the Braves leading base stealer with 29 on a team that doesn't have much other speed outside of it nervous his first postseason appearance coming off the shaky start against the Dodgers but prior to that his work it in very good in September now the 3 1 pitch to marquise grissom Wow we've been to the seats here at Coors Field an account full now beautiful night here in Denver gametime temperatures 60 degrees it's grounded final by crystal and but in right field of course they've got Larry Walker and you're not going to move him from that spot one away mark Lemke to battery at 253 five homers 38 RV a little over 30 points after he was moved from the number 8 spot in the batting order up to the number 2 spot in the batting order upstairs the cow bears to to another I think a pitcher will think about these first two batters is almost must outs with the guys that come behind especially right-handed pitcher wendi-go against Jones and McGriff and justice and Klesko for that matter guys John McSherry calling the balls and strike we worked with six umpires in the division series just as they do and they in ship series on the oil series here's the 31 on the way to left the right deal and the Braves mr. October this guy has a 340 postseason average in his career he's aboard with the first hit of the night a one-out single in the Roy Thea and now Chipper Jones the Braves rookie third baseman at 265 23 home runs he drove in 86 runs that was just one off the Atlanta record for a rookie Earl Williams drove in 87 back in nineteen sisters you see rookie it doesn't look like a rookie to me it looks like a pretty polished player he sure does kit in his first full major league season switch hitter batting left-handed that takes the first one low ball one really done a nice job with their number one pics after the down year they didn't miss on many and that's one of the reasons they've had such good success these last four or five years Lemke at first one man out just under way from Denver Jones he was one of the field players in the Atlanta lineup that was not given much rest during those final three weeks after they clinched Bobby Cox dealing was important to keep him in kind of a groove he had gotten into hot streak the last three weeks and Bobby didn't want to cool him off hey jeez thanks interesting story as to why Chipper Jones has those pants like the pie in tribute to his former teammate Steve Bedrosian who retired as a player midway through the season East to wear his pants like that chipper was a great friend of his dedicate the rest of his season to bedrock I think that shows a lot of maturity and probably the way he plays shows a lot of maturity and it's why when you watch him he doesn't seem like a rookie RIT's ahead in the cab one ball two strikes nice to do these two teams only three Colorado Rockies I've ever been to postseason play those three wall twice Ellis Burks and Bret Saberhagen and surprisingly there are nine Braves on the 25-man roster that have never been to both season flight Chipper Jones among them marquise grissom who had earlier he's first trip to both seasons Charlie O'Brien's never been to a postseason game nor is Mike Devereaux the rest of the Wookiees plots but you would think on a team that had been to postseason three times since 1991 almost everybody that had postseason experience that's not necessarily the case of Atlanta Colorado Rockies starting lineup and like the Atlanta Braves they've been able to pretty much go with a fixed batting order young Girardi Bichette Walker Galarraga Burks Castilla Weiss and batting I the pitching Kevin Ritz and the man they're facing one of the best you'll ever see Larry a consummate artist he doesn't really paint with broad strokes but with fine lines and shadings a little bit put on or taken off the very refined style mostly all over good defensive play up the middle and that's what the Braves provide with Maddox himself and then Blauser Lemke and Grissom keep an eye on the game tonight how many balls are hit off Greg Maddux up the middle to the shortstop the second baseman are right back to him if he is on he'll get a lot of balls handled by those three position Derek young leads it off for the Rockies a 317 hitters of the season he takes outside ball on here he was playing off the bench in the first half of the season he has been leer igniter he walked a lot takes a strike on the outside corner one ball one strike then he came began platooning but he was playing so well the jason bates moved to the bench and young took over as the everyday second baseman had some big hits down the stretch for the rockies off the end of the bat toward second there's one play by Lemke and there's one out here and the bottom half of the first inning this 1995 Division started hitter with an outside corner pitch it's a pitch that most hitters don't want to swing at early in the count but if he makes it then they're behind in the count and they don't like that either that's what you have to do when you face Greg Maddux capitalize on the mistakes there won't be many typically this pitch is over the middle of the plate with a slider didn't get a very often you've this except the winner has a big year yet to the guy that goes out there I agree I think the sigh on the ward for the pitchers is enough I think an everyday player should win the most the player and Bichette a strong contender for that this year one ball two strikes in this Colorado lineup all the power they have Maddox is only allowed one came to Andres Galarraga null amounts in this Rockies line at this ever homered in their careers automatics and of course Galarraga has been up against him about 65 at-bats and so he had to work a little bit to get that chase back the first is Durrani we'll be checking as he goes along to see if the pitches of Greg Maddux move in the same way they do at sea-level you don't feel they doing this a lot of pictures they don't two balls two strikes not too often see Bichette leaning out over and he says whoa now that he's got an inside conscience don't be surprised if he goes away with a change of that's what he did little the first time he must be they are but the four runs in the first is certainly good opening for a-rod McGriff with a count of 2 & 1 leading off here in the top half of the second 27 home runs 93 RBIs for McGriff this year great season for most but he would have liked three more home runs thirty four an eighth consecutive year of course the schedule was a little shorter this year now back the count tune to and as you can see Fred McGriff had he been able to get 30 this year would have moved up into some very exclusive company not that he's in not some pretty good company already players these days are aware of those things because we tend to highlight them one of those guys on endless probably didn't even know it Vinny Castilla very strong trophy that's the good one it was he arrives Player of the Year for the Steve Larry especially the offense I think they knew he could do this he was a shortstop coming up through the minor leagues so he's got more range than the average third baseman and more arm one gone near top of a second now David Justice a 253 average 24 home runs look at where Castilla is playing for justice we need right in the hole or what would ordinarily be the hole first fish to justice is low one ball no strikes this is an interesting defensive set the Rockies have against justice they're playing to pull in the outfield and in the infield and second half of the year when they've been pitching justice away a lot he's been going the other way there's a lot of basics too especially this not going to have has not been his best year offensively and the games I've watched him he seems to be a better fielder better baserunner a more complete ballplayer a shot downfield no score top half of inning two and every manager involved in Division Series this year scared to death Larry of these best-of-five opening Series which makes the first game in a series such as this perhaps so much larger than a best-of-seven series because you just don't have much time to recover if you lose it I think Rocky's probably feel like they need to sleep because of the Braves dominance over them the last couple probably feeling that they could be or anything just get one win in the center field base hit for justice I can hit off again the Ritz there's an example of why it is tough to pitch here high altitude that was only of young and yet it got by him so quickly that he hardly had time to move it's not just the fly balls that fly out of the park the ground balls get on the infielders more quickly they're harder to field and when to the side they're harder to track down just as at first with one out for Ryan Klesko at 310 average for the season 23 home runs and 70 RBIs fastball from Devon Rex the cow nothing in London he just tends to feel for the ball those need to sort of stroke the ball to left alone just trying to swing hard in case you hit it because if he hits it is going to travel and here he really lets it go nothing in one the count on Klesko one man out a even think they had a chance of getting it out there we think of Galarraga hit her but he didn't get the nickname cap for his hoodie no it's for his glove he's a outstanding defensive first baseman here's the 2 1 pitch on the way Kevin Ritz coming into his own at age 30 at the Detroit Tigers organization had to have reconstructive surgery in his elbow in 1993 and this year really came into his own with the Rockies two balls two strikes rich has a good presence on the moon he does not seem to get ruffle a big strong guy he looks like a formidable opponent and if the Rockies have had their druthers they would much prefer to be able to open up a series such as this with Bret Saberhagen and going Swift but they had to go to those guys and they find the regular season just to get here I think it's interesting that they went after Billy Swift in the off season and after Saberhagen this year because those two guys throw the kind of pitches that seemed to work best at this altitude and that is the sinking type fastball with high velocity and the short hard breaking pitch Rockies are basically opening up this series here it basically going with both start the game tomorrow night heads up way Anvil's Galarraga the score is to go to the bottom of the second the beautiful Rocky Mountains looming in the background we come back inside Coors Field bottom half of the second inning begin Mills corn Andres Galarraga to 80 there 30 home run players with 31 he drove in 101 Rockies became the only other team outside of the 1977 Los Angeles Dodgers to have four players with 30 or more homers to Galarraga here's the play that Andres Galarraga got all on once again right there you see a little bit of dust kicked up of when I was close it was certainly in tempt to go to second not much of a move one strike the count Maddox with the one he's got a little ham stink just as young earlier this year he lost the way to move able to beat this play but right you get on the scene dragon in the bottom of the second now Ellis Burks at 266 hitter during the season but against Atlanta or 3600 this year you can also see on that dub quickly the ground Burks he continues to swing a
