take the field we want to welcome the viewers who are joining us this is Nick Stockman and Jim kaat here a game number four of the American League Championship Series here at Oakland Coliseum on a bright sunny and warm afternoon in the East Bay as the Toronto Blue Jays take a two to one lead in the best-of-seven series against the Oakland A's and on the mound will be Bob Welsh 35 year old right-hander from Detroit eleven and seven on the year twenty games that he started were the fewest of his career and as you mentioned at the outset Jim they're not looking for any kind of a complete game from wealth today no complete games this year and we mentioned his job is to keep his team in the game probably 85 to a hundred pitches somewhere in that range would be what Tony LaRussa could expect and that might figure out to be about six or seven innings let's take a look around the field at the Oakland A's behind Bob Welch Rickey Henderson in left field as he has been every game a change in center Jerry Brown will play center field today and over in right field Ruben Sierra the infield has Carney Lansford at third base Mike bordick back over at shortstop he's been at second base the last couple of days Lance Blankenship will play second base with Mark McGwire as he always does at first and Terry Steinbach having a terrific series in fact if the A's won yesterday's game I think he would have been the player of the game he catches one of the concerns that Tony LaRussa has nine Bock one of the best at throwing out base dealers is the fact that Bob Welsh takes a while and getting the ball of the plate and even a gem like Steinbach not being may not be able to throw baserunners out have to give your catcher ample time and Dave Stewart and Ron darling have done a good job of that in the first two games well the A's have been here before 10 Division titles since 1971 Kansas City and Minnesota have done pretty well as well but the A's looking as we had set for that last hurrah this club could be broken up because of free agency too many veterans and even some of the young stars such as Ruben Sierra on this ballclub I'd like to give it one more shot before the A's lose their identity so to speak so we're set to go and Devon white leading on white Alomar and Carter facing Bob well [Music] third face to the month hand [Music] white is a switch hitter as is a Lombardi on-deck batter [Music] you'll see a lot of fast Falls early in the comp of Bob Welch we mentioned the injuries breaking stuff probably not quite as sharp because of the inactivity and he knows he's on a bit of a pitch limit he's going to take advantage of it throw a lot of strikes Lansford with two strikes moves back one ball and two strikes is white nearly offered at it we mentioned Welsh was on the disabled as three different times including coming out of spring training with shoulder and back injuries then he had a sore left knee and then right elbow put him on the DL for the third time but his Tony LaRussa told us every time he came off the disabled list he was impressive it didn't take him a while to get his speed back and the count is still one and two in fact totally ERISA said it's amazing that Bob Welch is even pitching right now at this time of the year first the fact in the knee then the elbow even now Dave Duncan will keep a very close eye on Welch because any pitch with that history of injuries you're gonna have to go to Bobby Bobby Whitman hurry maybe the man that Tony goes to breaking ball is outside two balls and two strikes and the count remains two and two the white interesting that no member of the Toronto Blue Jays have more than three hits or less than two of months their starter and we want to welcome those of you joining us to Game four of the American League Championship Series between the Blue Jays in the A's this is the leadoff hitter Devon white facing Bob Welsh and well she was in front o n2 now has run the count full the white three balls in two strikes this is dick Stockton along with Jim kaat Blue Jays lead the best-of-seven series two games to one it's in there for Paul strike three and white is out of there he took something off it and white doesn't like that call bye girl with Meryl all fast balls until this way and then ouch comes with the forkball and wiped off the ball drop low and inside durwood Merill saw it the other way and rang him up though the 35 year old Bob Welsh who has a hundred ninety nine career victories and denied the 200th in his final start of the regular year against Texas facing Roberto Alomar Alomar is 3 for 12 in this series and an opposite field home run yesterday Lansford again is in on the grass and the first pitch a fastball fouled out of play strike one Alomar has had an outstanding postseason he is hitting well over 400 in the last two years and the strike - oh and to see the unusual stance of durwood Merill those that have not seen him behind home plate before he does not peek over one shoulder like a lot of umpires but a square position on the outside corner and just missed in the count is one and two well she was ahead of white two strikes ran the count full before getting him on a called third strike there's a line drive base hit for Roberto Alomar his fourth hit of the series and the first Blue Jay to collect that many hits so with one out the Jays have a man on well that'll bring up Joe Carter who has not gotten untracked yet in this series just to 4:12 he has left several men on bases you see but the Blue Jays in a position to in Tirana or steel and Carter just wanted the rosin bag moved away from where Walter well Shannon Alomar's stolen - stolen of the two bases in two attempts [Music] takes an unusual position during his lead Roberto Alomar you'll see Rickey Henderson if he gets to first will dangle those hands down between the bees Roberto keeps one hand on the left thigh that left hand lets the right arm hang out there and of course uses that back leg to break you brace himself get a good jump no the counter Carter [Music] rich hacker is the third-base coach for Toronto Bobby Baylor is on the first base coaching line [Music] during the regular season Roberto Alomar have 49 stolen bases in 58 attempts never do any rollerblading not lately that's the best kind of guard that rollerbladers will use to protect their wrist and you see a lot of big league ballplayers now using it when they get on the basis so that they don't injure that wrist sliding into second base gives them some support [Music] now about trying to stretch his lead [Music] Artur swinging late fouls it back and it's one in one to Joe Carter with Dave Winfield the on-deck hitter [Music] very talented club is Toronto Blue Jay team never seems to satisfy the critics and sometimes their fans cito Gaston z-- club has finished first three of the last four years but they have not gotten into the World Series but no Canadian team has ever [Music] closer had to throw being lower and toward the second base side Alomar started to go and then stop the third of the way got by with one you see Roberto Alomar Bluff start and Steinbach has to hesitate for just an instant in case he does commit to second base and McGuire's tagged just a little late he missed him with the first Swiper well she's ahead of Carter one ball and two strikes [Music] cito Gaston has certainly played a different kind of ball in postseason he is not solely relied on the station to station in the long ball he's played the running game a lot more [Music] Wells paying too much attention to Alomar how much does that take him away from concentrating on Carter well Tony LaRussa said because Welch does not unload the ball as quickly as say Stuart or Darla he will pay much more attention to baserunners and have it thrown in there or step off [Music] two strikes here Joe Carter make it stop make him stop well that's one of the things if you're Bob Welch you'll do to try to combat holding a run around Crouch barely came to the belt and unloaded to home weapon Carter thought that should have been a walk don't think you'll get by with it on this pitch they'll make it stop a little longer Carter has been a finicky guy since he got into the batter's box money wells to move the rosin bag and they made well stop nothing wrong with that and he was leading the wrong way and he got will fix off the bottom on cito Gaston is going argue with first base umpire Joe Brinkman [Applause] they were working on him and they got close once and they finally nailed him they were persistent and it paid off they caught a Lamar a couple of times bluffing towards second and they do it again here just that one quick move and the swipe tag Alomar wants to argue that he never tagged it but McGwire did a smart thing he got the ball gave him the sweep tag Joe Brinkman right on the play said the tag was there before your hand was there Robbie Alomar is picked off and they're a 2 down with nobody on base and the count two balls and two strikes to Joe Carter that eliminates a Toronto Brett if the Jays were thinking of Nitin running Welsh's cap looks like it has hit the dirt more than just a few times with that mean fastball is fouled back it's one of those lucky ones with all the perspiration stains that players get probably two or three new caps a year but if you're if you're doing well or your team is doing well you have one that's comfortable or lucky you hang on to it give the new ones away to the kids dirty to sweat all over it I wouldn't want to go view pitches inside three balls and two strikes Kansas City upsets Philadelphia and Alice over Seattle as the scores roll in in the National Football League three balls and two strikes to Carter two out nobody on base the Blue Jays batting in the top of the first inning [Music] falling and fouls it out of play already this first inning even with the pickoff and the strikeout of white has been a good inning for Toronto the next pitch for Bob Bob Welch will be his 20th pitch and at that pace he won't be out there more than about four to five innings Tony Larusso I have to go to that bullpen a little quicker and that was a bad name to say yesterday the word bullpen because the bullpen really did not distinguish itself for either club [Music] three balls and two strikes with two outs Welsh laboring although no one's on base now here in the first inning and Carter continues to step out [Music] foul out of play now Lansford has a play over near the dugout and a lot of room here and that will retire the side so the first pickoff at first this season for Bob Welsh nothing across in the first-inning change in the batting order for the A's Rickey Henderson of course will lead off once again in left field Jerry Brown will make his first start in centerfield hitting second Ruben Sierra will be in right field hitting third and Harold Baines who's had a fine series hitting cleanup the designated hitter Mark McGwire at first base batting fifth Terry Steinbach batting sixth Carney Lansford down to the seventh slot after hitting second he's still at third Mike bordick will be at shortstop and Lance Blankenship at second this is the same second base shortstop combination that they EAS used in Game one and Toronto the same alignment in the field we'll have candy Maldonado in left Devon white in center and Joe Carter over in right field the infield Kelly Gruber with that game saving play yesterday at third base Manuel Lee at shortstop Roberto Alomar at second base in john olerude much-improved at first pan Hoarders does the catching and he'll catch Jack Morris Jack Morris gave up four runs on six hits in going the distance in game number one some criticism that Mars should not have been any other than named after Harold Baines hit the home run as the A's won at four to three so here's Morris now 7 and 2 in postseason they see Rickey Henderson Anderson walked and singled in his last two times up yesterday so he may be coming out of his Oakland trying to beat Jack Morris for the second time in postseason Toronto could not do that last year neither could Atlanta a good pitch to hit and it's fouled out of play one ball in one strike 37 year old right-hander from st. Paul Minnesota [Music] he's been in this situation before and a chance to put the Blue Jays up three games to one and that would be a commanding lead for 2 & 1 Henderson mentioned a short rest and as is normally the case when you come back to day early than usual you will have less power to show up that better control sharply hit the start-stop Lee Pitroda first and it gets by on a bounce olerude bounces away and Henderson goes into second base rounds second but Borders retrieves the ball Rickey Henderson Lee for the A's in the first inning get the board at his in scoring position there was a hard hit ball deep into the hole the infielders are having a little problem getting their their footing in kind of a deep track here at Oakland compared to the astroturf and Manuel Lee right there has a little problem getting some leverage off that back foot is back foot slips the throw comes up short in a difficult hop for Olerud who can't handle I don't know if this is because of the rock concert they had here a couple of weeks ago but the infielders are having a lot of problems with ground balls Guns and Roses I believe that it was the group and Metallica now it's Guns and Roses and errors after all of golf balls we look at it and they're all the way so a two base error charged to Manny Lee yesterday the Bluejays committed an error but the Oakland A's had three miscue so now Henderson is at second base and here is Jerry Brown switch-hitter making his first talk he pinch-hit yesterday and drew a walk dropped by the Cleveland Indians in spring training was a huge addition to das considering all their injuries this year [Music] his ball hitters delight right here if you're Jerry Brown you see Gruber is going to keep a close eye on Rickey Henderson and yet play a little shallow case Rickey should try to steal third for strike one he's got the option of trying to bunt it toward Gruber or pull the ball to the right side Tony LaRussa said Jerry Brown is my best number two hitter and he also led the American League with 16 sacrifice bunts during the regular season but the count is one strike ruber not wandering far off third in case there's a possible play there where's around and the on the forecourt one there's Gruber he won't charge too much because they could have a shot of getting Henderson a third the lead playing right behind the base runner now sneaking close as Mara steps off they want to pay attention to Ricky is not as apt to try to steal third base with nobody out because Brown is such a good number to hit or if he doesn't get there at this at-bat then you could look for him to go [Music] Morris up the mound the to first base to Alomar covering and on the sacrifice Ricky Henderson moves to third base and there's one out [Applause] now you mentioned he'd left the American League and he shows you why nice touch I mean he just defens that ball at the soft grass here at Oakland Boras has but one played Henderson can get to third easily [Applause] and the Blue Jays are going to bring their infield in here in the first inning for Ruben Sierra with a runner at third and one out sigh guess cito Gaston thinking is Ciara hits the ball in the air treat the ill he has good success against Morris any way you look for him to probably drive the ball if he doesn't he hits it off the end of the bat let's have some infielders there to feel it in his career he takes a forkball down what it is still an unusual move when you consider that Bob Welsh is the pitcher for the ACE is not like Toronto is facing a guy like the Clemens or someone who could go the distance and shut you out check swing and he went around says durwood Merill on the count but I guess Dido thinks that one run here in the first inning could loom large probably from some of the past experiences had against Welch in the open bullpen Henderson reached second on an era went to third on a sacrifice that's in the dirt two balls in a strike - Ruben Sierra with barrel beans on deck he is not a flashy flamboyant manager cito Gaston but the players really like him and they always know where they stand with him and he doesn't keep you guessing yesterday's game a good example early in the year Toronto people were screaming for cito to play Derrick Bell in left-field instead of candy Maldonado Maldonado has been one of the hitting heroes all year the count is 2 and 1/2 Sierra [Music] he wants to pitch the Sierra because Harold Baines coming up next had a terrific first game against Morris including the game-winning home run so he is not pitching around Sierra runners at first and third it does present a double play situation for the Blue Jays with a runner at first base but vanes three four four and Mark McGwire will follow no score bottom of the first inning and already we have a another scintillating action-packed game and Jack Morris even though he's had problems in the first inning most of his career in postseason this is a little unusual for of course this is partially due to Manny Lee's error [Music] see the wave pains has been hitting the ball right now that conversation between borders and Morris a little about the pitching pattern he immediately pointed out toward Manny leave as to who we might want to cover second base Rene laxman going over Rickey Henderson first pitch a fastball on the outside corner the infield is playing Harold Baines as a right-handed pull hitter I think that was the point torque Manny leaf reporters get a little more toward the hole we're going to pitch him outside try to get him to hit it on the ground that way feel poor straight away although Devon white shaded around to the left all in one strike to Baines Harold Baines the quiet designated hitter who had an off year at the plate this year has come alive with seven hits and thirteen trips here in the LCS trying to put the A's in front these locks into the left side over the second for one [Music] it is in time for the double play Bane's not being able to run down the line as the A's waste a rally opportunity and Jack Morris pitches out of it was the sixth of the series and although they had the fewest double plays of any American League team in each of the last three years they now have six double plays in the first four games of this one so the jays avoid a big problem in the first inning and Dave Winfield will lead off in the second followed by john olerude and candy Maldonado Winfield facing Bob Welsh and that's a matchup that goes back to 1978 including the 1981 World Series but against Welsh Winfield is hitless in his last 15 at-bats as a fastball to hit and he pops it up to the center of the diamond Mike bordick calls for and makes the play one a while you mentioned that double play and Toronto's record that again is a characteristic of great pitchers when you look at a Welch and a Morris and a Stewart Morris primarily a flyball pitcher hit the ball in the air off of a great deal what does he do he gets a ground ball at the opportune time to get out of an inning and even though Bane's can't is not quick and getting down the line mani Lee had to go into the hole get the ball and quickly fired over to Alomar [Music] john olerude the batter he's 2 for 11 in this series but he knocked in an important tying run in Game one only to see it undone by Bane's home run [Music] and wells behind on the count to a No [Music] two balls and a strike Welsh against the Blue Jays he made one start against them this year that was back on July 10th and he was the winning pitcher at the SkyDome five to one work seven and a third innings gave up four hits in one run lifetime is three and two against the Jays flyball hit deep to left field Henderson looking up and this is out of here john olerude has an opposite field home run and toronto has taken a one to nothing lead just like Roberto Alomar yesterday olerude went the other way and his first playoff homerun and his second RBI of the series got the fastball out over the plate where olerude can handle it and get those arms extended even though there is no spin apparently on that ball that's with that way the camera can slow it down that is a fastball away from olerude and like yesterday the ball is just jumping in this hot weather here in Oakland runs in this series by nine different players so as you mentioned at the outset the bats are alive pitchers took center stage in the first two games but we have a lot of home runs so it's one of nothing in favor the Blue Jays in candy Maldonado the batter the count old one to him breaking ball is hit in the air to centerfield Brown is moving back and you can see even on that fly ball it carried to the warning track and that's the second out go routine fly balls remember Jose Canseco said if I could get away from this ball park I'd hit a ton of home runs because at night the air is cold and it's damp and the ball doesn't carry but it's unusually warm here in the Bay Area and with the afternoon games much different ballpark for hitters two down and here's Kelly Gruber [Music] Gerber's biggest contribution in this series has been a third base and made the big plate and that might have been the difference in this game often times as you mentioned it doesn't show up in the stat sheet but that's been a strength of this Toronto ballclub with Manny Lee at Short Gruber and third good defense on that left side one ball and one strike - Kelly Gruber I often times if you see a blowout type game a pitcher win a game like seven to one and afterwards say wow it was an easy win but it's placed like that that Gruber might make in key situations but kind of turned the entire game around I think that was a game saver yesterday Tony LaRussa was saying you know it's hard to pinpoint one turning point in the game there were a lot of missed plays some wild pitches that resulted in runs but I think that defensive play really snuffed out a big Oakland threat two balls and a strike - grooving [Music] how to play to the right side Blue Jays have to be happy even seeing that reaction after Gruber fouled that ball off it's like he was angry with himself he played part of the season as if he really didn't have his heart in the game and since that home run he hit in Game two and now you see the way he's played in the field that's more the Kelly Gruber of 1990 when he was getting some MVP considerations down the home stretch rock that's his average against Bob Welsh 10 420 zoe has hit wells pretty well over the years gets jammed on a good pitch by wealth and Apple land off the photographer's section in the county holds it two balls and two strikes you know that play by Gruber came with the second batter up when seven hit for the A's in the seventh inning yesterday but considering all the hits and all the weird plays including a sacrifice fly on a foul ball the A's really might have forged in front they never really took the lead yesterday Rover's demesne employ a sparkler here's the to to dish hit deep to centerfield Brownlow has ruled and he makes the catch three fireballs a home run by olerude and it's one a nothing Toronto in the middle of the second bottom of the second inning one to nothing and Mark McGwire leading off he has two hits in the series one of them a home run with a man aboard right now let's go to Lesley Visser with the count ball one dick it's been a big day in the McGwire family this morning Dan McGwire was the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks and Mark had a message for the Seahawks offensive line he said protect my brother and you'll win well they didn't and they didn't do with that four time mark hopes make up for it today and he wants to make up for it I think on that pitch is he blistered a foul ball there's Dan McGwire 5 for 9 for 44 yards oops sacked four times to Leslie that offensive line didn't listen to Mark McGwire one pinch swing and a Miss as you mentioned at the outset hitting 182 as you like to say a buck 82 but he has just missed been about five homeruns by now just missed one in this at-bat already he'll take his brother stats 5 for 9 as a hitter I'll take that all day why're Steinbach and Lansford the right three and there's one down that's the first strikeout for Jack marks mentioned maybe not quite the power but the the touch the field of control will be there and Morris gets that in an absolutely perfect spot he's ahead in the count and he knows anything borderline he'll get hitters like McGwire to chase and that's the feeling of coming back on short rest a little better feel of the ball he have a a better idea of where you're throwing it of customer here and Terry Steinbach makes the strike Steinbach had three singles in a walk and two RBIs yesterday those are the bright spots for the years although Willie Wilson sitting this one out and Jerry Brown playing so he'll Morris is ahead of Steinbach two strikes that's what Steinbach has done in this series the big question was his health coming in and he has been healthy and productive here's the YouTube pinch and he strikes out and that is the second straight strikeout the sitting for Jack Maura same pitching pattered get ahead with the fastball and to Terry Steinbach that looks like it's could be a strike near the knees by the time he swings at it down in the dirt but that's the advantage of that split finger or fork ball that violent downward break right at the end do down nobody on and Carney Lansford flops into third base big hop for Kelly Gruber out at first base is Lansford Anna quit one two three inning for Jack Morris so we've completed two in game number four and the Blue Jays are in front one to nothing Blue Jays leading one to nothing and batting in the third inning against Bob Welch who has given up a home run to John Olerud two hits thus far for Toronto and here's Pat borders their capture hitting in the number 8 slot fastball missing outside ball one boarders was able to laugh at himself for that embarrassing situation yesterday's happened a lot where a catcher walks away thinking they're three down and they're only two down there pinning and Carney Lansford knocks it down off-balance throw to first base head McGwire makes the soup backhanded fine play on both sides and early McGwire how to handle a heart shot by Pat borders and there's one down why I rock it Carney lansford's says take that we made some errors in yesterday's game we're going to tighten it up a little today not only a nice stop with that tender elbow getting the ball over there as quickly as possible to McGwire who's made so much improvement and handling throws like this at first base a Gold Glove winner a couple of years ago biased foot postseason feeling percentage Carney Lansford as Manuel Lee takes ball one yesterday was Lance Burt's first era in 31 postseason games at third base and look at the names behind him Brooks Robinson Greg Nettles there's a line drive base hit and Manny Lee he gets to single that is his third hit in a series and it comes with one out here in the third inning so the Jays have at least two hit in every inning thus far the work that the hitting coach Larry Hisle is doing and Leslie referred to it at the open of the game really shows when you look at the balance up and down this lineup borders smoke that ball at Lansford now Manny Lee starting to pick up some hits very soft-spoken easygoing batting instructor who first thing he he says is I'd rather feel I did not do that much one of the most polite men you'll ever meet in this game and along with Gene Tenace on that bench Legion baseball teammates in Portsmouth Ohio soon as McGwire threw the ball back to else we saw Lee immediately jump off and take a lead [Music] Tony Larusso I'm sure watching Welsh's progress very closely here through a lot of pitches in the first inning there's a changeup that is ripped foul by Devon white strike one Lee with that two-run triple yesterday with a single with one out here and white the batter who was called out on strikes in the fourth inning [Music] one ball and one strike we'll be hearing from Roger Clemens Sue's at his own scouting report on the hitters on both of these teams [Music] 1-1 pitch tipped into Steinbach slow right - 1 & 2 there was some rumors this week about Roger Clemens possibly being traded to the Texas Rangers which the Red Sox claimed were totally fallacious now I don't blame him happy why give the franchise away he is the Red Sox 3 in Devon white looks at a called third strike for the second time well let's see what Roger Clemens feels about pitching the Roberto Alomar Robbie Alomar I think he's one of the smartest players in the game he's a spray hitter but from the left side of the plate he has a lot more power he adjusts each and every at-bat so if you get him out with fastball the first time up don't try and do it the second time so definitely make the doesn't and we ought to see some more breaking balls here because he had a homerun off darling on a fastball and a base hit off Welch who pretty close to a walk right there you can see Bob Welch a little uncomfortable with that step off he hasn't done that the early part of his career so that little step off Bluff move is awkward for him ball one up top Alomar as you mentioned single to the opposite field that's where he hit his home run yesterday over the left field fence [Music] he was picked off first base in the first inning to quell any possible bluej rally in the first but Ola roots home run with white out of the second has given him the lead now they got Lee aboard with two down Tony LaRussa deciding on going with a four-man starting staff in this LCS as opposed to cito Gaston who has come back with Jack Paar's so he's going with three pitchers Baris would of course be ready if the series goes to a seventh game David Cone will pitch for Toronto tomorrow and Dave Stewart will go for the eight count is to a no to Alomar see the way he took that pitch I think he may have anticipated Manny Lee trying to steal second base Roger Clemens mentioned Roberto Alomar one of the smartest players in the game and that's one thing you can do to confuse a catcher is put that bat out over the plate drag it back and slow up his throw a little bit [Music] behind three-and-oh else's with Alomar over the years Alomar six for 14 against Bob Welch as there are several members of the Blue Jays who have had good success against the veteran right-hander he is the three old pitch taking all the way now at three and one a llamar checking with rich hacker see if the Blue Jays play hit and run manney lead on it first-base they do not and the pitch misses outside wall for and alvars aboard given up by Bob Welsh and now the Blue Jays have runners at first and second and two down and the dangerous Joe Carter coming to the plate too many deep counts for Bob Welch that is not like him and of course the reason is the amount of time he's spent on the disabled list he's just not as sharp as he was during that siyeong award 27 wins Bob Welch used to be strike one strike two waste to pitch get him out not a lot of these three two counts ever seen Joe Connor popped up and Lansford handled it in foul territory right now Bob Welsh has thrown 46 pitches in 2 and 2/3 innings [Music] runners are at first and second and two out you can be sure that Tony Larusso aware of how many pitches he's thrown in the situation is not going to wait very long before going to the bullpen this is a pivotal game for the ACE to lose a second straight game at home in trail three to one with Collin going tomorrow would not be a pretty picture for Oakland one ball in those strikes the count to Carter [Music] one and one now not many teams have come back from that of course Pittsburgh faced with the same predicament when you have to beat Steve Avery Tom Glavine and John Smoltz and that's what Oakland would be faced with if he they fall behind you're looking at cone Guzman and Morris again Bob Hawk will be pitching for the Pirates tonight [Music] when he was healthy he was a challenging type pitcher here it is hit it if you can now there's a little more tentative this a little more I got it I've got to be fine I've got to be careful I can't throw it in the strike zone because I don't have quite the power [Music] two on two out 2 & 1 the count [Music] one pitch away from loading the bases for Dave Winfield this is not the scenario that Tony LaRussa had hoped for today as well SH has labored here giving up a home run last inning throwing a lot of pitches in the first inning fortunate enough to pick off Robbie Alomar [Music] [Applause] now the count three and one so Carter couldn't get a good pitch to hit here the good pitches kitchen misses that was a good offering by Welsh in the commas pulled three and two so the runners will be off he is at second a local bar at first two pitches file back almost think after that swing that Terry Steinbach is very tempted to go to a break at fallout 3 and - I know you hate to load the bases with Dave Winfield coming up and Welch's Patrol has not been sharp at Joe Carter has been right on that fastball as if he's saying three-two to ban on that's what I've got to get with Winfield on deck been hitless in his last 16 times at bat against wells a high fly ball that's playable left-field Rickey Henderson looking up in the Sun using his hand and that was a very tough play for Rickey Henderson who used first his glove and then his bare hands a shield so Welsh pitches out of a jam and the Blue Jays lead to a very important out getting Joe Carter with the count full and 2 on in the 3rd inning so it is still one or nothing in favor of the Blue Jays as the A's bat in the 3rd Mike bordick leading off the shortstop once the Bunton takes up high ball one and that last out was another one of those just missed I mean the old baseball and is round ball round bat it's hard to hit it square all the scouting reports in the world even when you know what's coming and have a good swing like Joe Carter did just missed it maybe a half an inch one in one the captive Artic who is still looking for his first hit in a series hold for eight but he has drawn for walks for one walk I should say bringing up-to-date on NFL finals today past the diving Neely and the A's have their first base hit so for the second time in three innings they have the leadoff man aboard trailing one to nothing in bordick has his first hit of the series and that'll bring up Lance Blankenship when a lot of the big guns were out of Tony LaRussa's lineup this year he used the designated list the disabled as 22 times he was able of now the running game go on and play hit and run with the likes of bordick and Blankenship and I'm sure he was happy to see his name in the lineup today after the game he had yesterday and a chance to redeem himself and that's what it will probably take for ol Clinton to overtake or stay up with Toronto is a little more production from the bottom into that line up Blue Jays have certainly got production from the bottom of their lineup is Leslie pointed out Blankenship in his first full year in the major leagues played all over the place wanna know from Morris that's rené Lachman who yesterday's sent home Mark McGwire on the drive to right field was thrown out by Carter and lakshman said there's a fine line between being aggressive and stupid and I definitely crossed that line I say against him so he has fest up a couple of times which gives you some insight into what kind of manager he might be he's not afraid to take the heat two balls in those strikes in game two he misread a sign from Tony LaRussa in the bench thought the take side was on gave it to Walter Weiss it wasn't he said hey it was my mistake he denied candidate for to managerial posts with the expansion Florida Marlins and the Texas ranges and you always want to see someone get another chance at it and you got a root for a guy like that two balls in those strikes - Blankenship on deck the top of the order Rickey Henderson [Music] Mauro's falls behind three balls and no strikes [Applause] [Music] Mars walked four batters in Game one of this series where he took the loss only his second loss in nine postseason appearances [Applause] reowww pitches in there for a strike and Blankenship has shown a good eye this year he drew 82 walks in the regular season that was third highest on the A's team one deducting the Blue Jays lead on john olerude home run in the second inning bluffing the bunt and taking for a strikin now the count is full the blankenship and that's why Blankenship can take pitches because of what you just referred to good discipline at the plate he said I'll make him throw another strike the A's would like nothing better than to get bored again Blankenship on with nobody out turn that line up over he doesn't chase a lot of bad pitches [Music] bordick is the baserunner [Applause] they set to left field stopping a second is bordick as Maldonado retreat ball was hit too hard purported to even consider going to third but the aides with back-to-back singles runners at first and second and not out well they got their wish - good at-bat by Blankenship he takes forests to a 3-2 count says I'll get a fastball to hit he was right on that ball see the little side hop it took to Maldonado again a little bit of the rough turf here and open and Copeland's been waiting for Ricky to join the party for the opportune time well he is between those killer bees as they like to call these Oakland contributors like bordick and Blankenship and Henderson at bat on the on deck hitter jerry brown all played major roles in a year in which Tony LaRussa constantly changed his lineup so Jack Morris in a jam here with runners at first and second and nobody out the tying run is in scoring position Rickey Henderson don't think he'll be funny John to the mound to talk with Jack Morris they want Ricky to drive the ball the most dangerous leadoff hitter in the game he hit the ball sharply to lead safe on the to base Center in the first inning and there's a looper to left field that's going to prep for a base hit Gordon Krauss third they're going to lay them in here to play at the plate not in time and the A's have tied the game 1-1 on Ricky Henderson's RBI single as blankenship wolves to second [Music] [Applause] only the second hit for Ricky Henderson but his looks like he's coming on quickly here Maldonado plays it perfectly just looped out into left center for de Kenna hesitate for a moment make sure it would fall in and no hesitation by romaine Lakshman and it's not that little bloop single in on the hands that does the damage to Morris it's allowing the eight and nine hitters to get on base first RBI of the series for Henderson so looking at his last three at-bats after going old for nine a walk in a stolen base in a run scored a single yesterday reaching on an era RBI single the matter is Jerry Brown and Brown will try to find led the American League and sacrifice bunt the first pitch Brow's sacrificed his first time up to allow henderson to get to third but he was stranded there to score [Applause] there's a changeup there is a process to sign they're going to give Brava one his swing the C Morris will immediately break toward the third baseline grouper will hold his ground the difficult thing for Toronto here is with the sacrifice bunt you have great speed on the bases if you do try to nail say Blankenship at 3rd or Henderson at 2nd [Applause] [Music] Dec is Ruben Sierra there's nobody out is whether one in and runners at first and second and now Jack Morris is laboring here in the third inning he lost the first game of this series talk about how things can change in is the pivotal board game [Applause] Morris is in real hot water so much for being sharper on short rest without the power he's got a couple strikeouts but it's not like Jack Morris to fall behind hitters and walk it is like he's doing in this any roben Sierra who has hit four homers off with Morris as we mentioned his first time up walk his first time up bases-loaded nobody out and bullpen activity Todd stottlemyre begins to grow in the Blue Jays bullpen regular starters this year they like Jimmy key relegated so here Sierra so the A's have an opportunity for a big inning strike one Aruba boy he took that pitch like he was taken all the way that might be the best one he will get to hit third base is blankenship Rickey Henderson is its second Jerry Brown and Kurt nobody out [Music] strike we talked about what would happen that the Blue Jays were to win and take a three to one lead with the likes of Kohn Guzman and Morris ahead on the other hand at the A's were to even the series and beat Morris that means they would have not got the ACE twice in beating their eight twice to tie the series Dave Stewart coming back tomorrow one ball and one strike [Applause] ciara fouls it back and Morris is ahead of him 1 & 2 urging on his team as Tony LaRussa who has a lot of confidence Sedo in the Blue Jays dugout nearly one after it the count is even 2 and 2 Ruben Sierra who wears that number 21 in that left earring native of Puerto Rico and the player all Puerto Ricans worship the great Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates right I feel that we'll get into Ron Carter makes the catch tagging up his blankenship the throw goes to serve but diving in is Henderson and the A's have taken a two to one lead blankenship scores Henderson goes to third first was brown and it's to the 1sc era on the sacrifice fly gets his third RBI of the series [Music] and once again borders going to the mound and runners at first and third and now and the same situation if Jack Morris could escape this inning with two runs Blue Jays would be thrilled to do it you'll again have to get a double play ball for the Harold Baines or strike him out keep him in the infield that's not easy to do back-to-back at-bats here's Henderson on at third base he was stranded there in the first inning [Music] and the airs beans we're live into a double play this is one and oh they ain't hit into a double play to win the first inning for the Athletics after they had a man in scoring position back Henderson got the third but he hit the ball very sharply to shortstop Seto Galen Cisco now the Chieko to the Bluejays quickly runs to the mound to talk tomorrow the concept during beans first at-bat between Pat borders paid off because they pitched beans lowing away hit a nice ground ball to Manny Lee for a double play I don't know whether Cisco's saying hey let's go a different way or just checking to make sure coming back on the short rest Jack's ok with that grin on his face kind of tells you he is so Welsh has struggled and now Jack Morris [Applause] looking for the ground ball at the go double play and a lot they said Henderson will store could be extra bases [Applause] behold there's a baguette second with a double is Harold Baines if three to one in favor of the aid [Applause] and he has hit the ball twice today again that great plate coverage from the deep position in the box and you see it right there the first hit bat the ground ball double play this one feint says I'll wait a little longer and take it the other way Maldonado plays it out of the corner so latch Minh has to hold brown at third banes RBI number four in this series and he continues to be the leading batting star for [Music] walk mark the beer McGuire's power don't go that there's been a better clutch hitter for the A's in situations like this than me actually the next two hitters in their lineup Steinbach and Lance interesting that McGwire off of Mars by hitting only 250 Steinbach came into the 3:33 so he is gone Oh easy mark for Jack Maura says he comes up with the bases loaded in one cito Gaston throwing those numbers out saying I'm gonna give up of wires back to try to get the ground ball [Applause] three walks issued by Morrison here Steinbach he struck out last inning we'll Morris get out of the inning with only three runs or DA's gonna have some more crooked runnings up on that [Music] [Applause] the more the fork fault missing one and all [Applause] [Music] to know hitters delight right here for Steinbach we've talked about zone hitting Terry Steinbach will draw a little imaginary rectangle around his favorite zone guest fastball if it's there drive it he did yesterday off the right-field wall [Applause] and Jack Morris is in danger of walking Steinbach and forcing a runner home [Applause] there's Jerry Brown at third-base [Applause] fames who doubled in a run at second and y're who has passed intentionally three balls in those four [Music] for Brown will score the force wonder the inning for the A's and it's now a 4 to 1 ball the bases remain loaded the only one and the ninth hitter of this third inning coming up Carney Lansford and now it has to come in to cito Gaston spine is porous does not have it today my team is down three I may need him in Game seven so we can't allow him to hang out there too long Lansford bounced to third his first time up [Music] pretty obvious Morris is that right he looked like he was in the second inning with back-to-back strikeouts but since then it's been nothing but wildness and falling behind hitters at fork ball came out a little early and that was Jack Morris's 30th hits this inning 20 of them have been bought ten strikes nine straight times here as Lansford [Applause] that breaks the string and that makes the count one ball in one strike still one out bases loaded four runs in for the A's here in the third inning [Applause] [Music] advance borders blocked it closed by 2 & 1 the count good point you bring up about Mars and the fact that he would have to come back again on three days rest it looks like the three days rest was not sufficient the way he's throwing here in the third inning Donnell Meyer is ready in Caicedo Gaston even and it's not the total pitches that takes it out of a pitcher it's when you have long innings like this when you go 30 to 40 pitches [Applause] and it's fast swing bounding ball that's going to get a run in [Music] everybody is safe beans for it'll be a basic firk [Applause] just the penalty you've paid for walking people loading up the bases we'll check swing ground balls like this that lengthy outs both more pressure on the infielders Lee could not get the handle on it and it becomes an infield hit or an error frankly could it if he comes up with it queenly could have had Lansford easily up for the second time in against a ground ball the lead over to alibi and they turn the double play their second double play of the game but they bat around score 5 runs to take a 5 to 1 lead and we'll return to Oakland Coliseum after this word from your local station come back to the Oakland Coliseum we're at game 4 of the American League Championship Series this is dick Stockton along with Jim kaat Blue Jays came into the stud game leading two games to one olá routes home run gave them a lead but 5 runs off of Jack Morris as the A's batted around in the bottom of the 3rd inning five runs on five hits and now Bob Welsh who has thrown a lot of pitches so far Jim now has a four run hood if he can get told me LaRussa two more innings and keep this game at 5 1 I think Tony you'll say you've done what I've expected let's turn it over to the bullpen leading off takes a curveball inside for a ball Winfield is now gone hitless 16 straight times against Bob Welch Landsberg backing up [Applause] retired one out beautiful pictures from atop the Oakland Coliseum on a cloudless day based in the Los Angeles area the bud one airship is piloted by Maurice my lemons Mike Hantz and Corky Bellinger let's give those guys some credit Jim they're up there you know just it no I think they deserve they got they got a great view while today is the weather we've had here at the Bay Area and still have it and should have it tomorrow again here's john olerude he hits a drive to left centerfield Henderson racing over and it's off-the-wall Anderson makes a good play on one bounce to throw to second and sliding in with a double Izola roof john olerude with a home run and a double two for two in the game here with one out on the fourth inning when John Olerud came up they talked about what a good hitting prospect he was and after it that's like we've seen in the championship series almost the 375 foot single but he does lick it into second they're going to begin to say that kid can hit and he can be great discipline the quiet hands and the hits he's getting off good pitchers [Music] dandy Maldonado had a big day yesterday and an undistinguished postseason history only 137 in 23 games coming into this series in postseason a homer a single and two runs batted in in yesterday's game and said well he indicated it was the biggest moment of his career [Music] hit sharply right at Blankenship first for the second out as olerude advances to third he was happy to get that ball Lance Blankenship tough day yesterday as a lot of infielders did and like field goal kickers you can't wait to get that first opportunity out of the way right and Blankenship his hit one byway and they did some don't get another opportunity why they change team stuff off he did he's back at the lineup Kelly Gruber with two down and olerude at third base [Music] [Applause] Gruber and the Blue Jays have to feel that they can stay with well she is not an overly effective thus far he is snake to a four-run lead and they can chip away against wells they already have four hits Oliver that's why there's no activity right now in the Toronto bullpen Jack Morris will go back up there casino Gaston has seen his team score so many runs for Morris this year and Bob Welch is not that overpowering pitcher he was a couple of years ago john olerude with the lead at third base he doubled with one out swinging over Hoover checking with rich hacker taking all the way some instances Gruber could get the green light but it was his team trailing 5-1 they're in need of baserunners here even with two outs chime box man and the countless poultry into what is significant about that five run out first by the A's in the third inning and that was the first time that the A's have led since game number one they have been on the uphill climb since their four to three victory [Music] which toothpicks and goober strikes out and overlay the stranded at third in the middle of the fourth inning here at the Coliseum the A's lead to js5 Toulon this game summary is sponsored by Budweiser and the first beginning of this series five runs and ten batters came to the plate for the A's in the third john olerude is two for two has accounted for their only run as the A's with their first lead since the first game of this series and they're looking through rose-colored glasses right now Blankenship leads often takes ball one Blankenship single the left and score to run last inning which is low to a No Jack Morris looking to become only the second pitcher in Major League history to win a postseason game for three different clubs Tommy John managed to do it for the Dodgers Yankees and Angels Mars 2 lost trailing here - and one now [Music] never gusts early when he for the Chicago White Sox he was 39 back in 1959 with the White Sox and Morris [Music] hi Kevin Brian most victories this year [Music] for those years Gus a member that famous big poor they had in Cleveland Blankenship's abort Bob Feller hurt score Mike Garcia an early win before he got his 300th win coming over to the White Sox we talked about Guzman slider Bob lemon day the most devastating slider of any right-handed Rickey Henderson the batter has reached twice today they pontedera [Music] nearly throwing the ball away was Morris Olerud made a good play over there [Music] control not real sharp to home hit not very good to first base either olerude had to make that bleeping stab to save the overthrow and a call strike to Henderson blankenship a good base runner on at first base you have the luxury of a five-to-one lead a lot of things Tony LaRussa can do the plate is got a couple of guys who can do them with Henderson and brown brown on this kind of speed you don't have to hit run oftentimes one of the purposes of the hit-and-run is to stay out of the DoublePlay the other is to go first to third get Blankenship to third but with his speed he can steal second on his own right to Ricky Henderson he had 400 against the Blue Jays in the 89 LCS stole eight phases in eight tries hit the long ball in one of the top leadoff home run Fred took something off the Henderson Todd stottlemyre who was up earlier is throwing again for the Blue Jays Morris thought he had a strike there on that changeup took a long look in at durwood Merill five two one please leave the J's five runs last bid against Jack Morris on five hits if the pitches taken for a strike to throw to second not in time and Lance Blankenship has a stolen base [Applause] go to a llamar a bit too high again when jose canseco was there was Canseco Henderson and Blankenship the top three for speed Morris gets the benefit of that call of the slider but Oakland gets what they want Blankenship at second base with nobody out days with a runner in scoring position of the count to a two-day Henderson kumaris he'll hold blankenship at second and the throw to first but even on the outs Jim Morris has been hit hard even on the double plays they've been hitting shots often but helps him here as he has perhaps the biggest glove in the major leagues I mean when this ball comes back at if the size of Jack Morris's glove the second base would lose the ball in that thing and that's one of the reasons the pitcher wants a big glove and they hit rockets like that back at you you can defend yourself that bigger than the catcher's go up that Gus triandos used to use to catch hoid will help you could hide about five baseball's in it well Jerry Brown the hitter goes they're a fastball up and in and pops it up and he drops the ball it looks a keeper borders from the very start [Applause] [Music] as that was popped straight back behind home plate and an era has been charged to Pat borders second era of the game that wasn't that old glove that led him down it's the high sky you see him squinting in the spin on the ball and he tried to recover trap it into his chest protector he never got a good bead on that ball he ran sort of a post pattern to get back to it he wanted to lose the defend under did that but he lost the ball too so ii Bluejays arrow the ballgame the count old one [Music] you know pitching of course as well it's not better than anyone who looks like Mars is not comfortable with any of his pitches and I thought on the short rest at least the control would be there and that's life hold at second base the count is two and one jerry brown the Virgin Islands they're watching this championship series even down there is parents looking in also the hometown of our director Bob Fishman [Music] producer Bob dicus on the two balls and one strike with one blankenship the runner at second it picks up the third in the ground ball and blankenship will hold at third base Lee must have gotten confused as Blankenship took off the runner was past him when the ball was hit to him and cito Gaston is coming out and that'll be all for Jack Morris and Manny Lee will be charged with an era and that is his third era in the last two game a much different shortstop as Blankenship takes off much different shortstop on natural grass so you get the true hops off the astroturf at SkyDome but Manny Lea's but not been the same shortstop out here on the regular turf and Jack Morris will leave the game [Applause] blowing and unspectacular three and a third top Stottlemeyer aboard and will return Steve Avery and Bob walk will duel tonight in the National League Championship Series with the Braves having a chance to wrap it up Bob walk will try to prevent that for the Pirates 8:30 Eastern Time for Game five so Todd stottlemyre is the new pitcher we're leaving Jack Morris who had his shortest outing in 11 postseason starts Donal Meyers called and Ciara hits the bounding ball olerude he'll make the play unassisted the runners hold a third and now runners at second and third with two away at the conclusion of today's game Jim and I will select the Chevrolet most valuable player of the game Chevrolet will donate $1,000 in the players behalf to the Special Olympics that's most valuable player of the game what I do here's Harold Baines big opposite field double Nanaki in Iran last inning over 500 on the series 8 for 15 takes ball one from Stottlemeyer they might walk in with the choir on deck but I think cito Gaston has seen the way Maguire is swinging the bat so even with those numbers by Benjy Sam I got a load of up from the big guy they explained by Baynes he was gone for the bleachers in right field a rather long swing and much more vulnerable to that high fastball that's tougher for hitters like Baines to catch up with no more is a low fastball hitter we miss a good fastball by stottlemyre you know Baines is hitting 316 has two homers office Stottlemeyer and McGwire hitting 263 so apparently the Blue Jays are not going by the book of the matchups between pitcher and hitter in this instance Blankenship's at third Brown is at second two down here in the fourth inning five to one in favor [Music] it's one and two often times to ensue managers and their staff will go over those numbers before game are before a series and give you a tenancy but once the game starts oftentimes ill disquiet by field and it must have worked man Ely makes the catch yesterday the A's committed three errors today the Blue Jays have had three to get out of further damage and after four it's still 5 to 1 Oakland tonight on CBS begins with a CBS News special the presidential campaign debates and then Game five of the National League Championship Series between the Braves and the Pirates coming up tonight right here on cbs4 innings complete the A's lead 5 to 1 Pat borders leading off against Bob Welsh fouls off the first pitch for a strike Borders was thrown out on a fine play by both Carney Lansford who recovered on a hard smash and Mark McGwire who backhanded a ball thrown in the dirt in the 3rd inning so both teams third baseman have made some outstanding defensive plays in this series one and one the count of order orders with a home run in the fifth inning the medium one is this one up Steinbach makes the captioner [Applause] borders pops up to his opposite number and that'll bring up the number nine hitter Manny Li and his opposite number played it differently than borders Velasquez see Terry Steinbach by finding the ball immediately has a chance to shield his eyes and just look that ball right into the glove remember on that pop-up that borders dropped he did not get a chance to do that he had to try to catch it on the run I would think that playing daylight baseball at this hour one o'clock Pacific time as we started could play havoc without fielders and in particular cats in the instructional league catchers used to play games and as pitchers we join him you'd get down on all fours face to the ground let the coach hit a pop-up and then your job was to look up and try to find it good practice for catching popups on a day like today Welsh misses with the curveball and the count is one and one Lea's committed two errors in the field but has three hits in the series Blue Jays trailing five to one they've been out hit fine at the pour now goes to two and one one big key for Welsh is that he's kept the leadoff batter off face each inning yesterday the Blue Jays got the leadoff man on in seven of the nine innings big help to the pitcher how to play and it's 2 & 2 sure Tony LaRussa a little antsy right now because you mentioned Welch's not had any complete games it hasn't been a Bob Welch type year but they could have really pulled the game open in the bottom of the fourth Todd stottlemyre came in and and shut them down really still gives the Blue Jays a legitimate chance yeah they got a double play to end the inning their second double play of the game the bases were loaded and that was in any in which the J's could have really you can never say put the game out of reach as early as the 3rd inning what really made it difficult for the Jays they're trailing by four runs that's not a huge amount breaking ball bounced foul pass Bob bailor the first base coach remains to a2 not only is the cap beaten up and been through a lot how about the toe of the shoe it's why a pitcher wears a toe plate a little extra guard that's probably a lucky shoe see a pitcher uses those shoes like a sprinter rather uses the pitching rubber like a sprinter used as a starting block and that's why when you dig into that hole right in front of the rubber the toll of that shoe wears away there the old days when players bought their own shoes you'd take very take a lot of care and preserving that I did pair of a week [Music] bird has a play and he makes the catch for out number two so Devon white one hitter in the lineup Howard Roger Clemens handled a switch hitting's out fielding the round white is definitely Blue Jays catalyst right-handed he has trouble with breaking pitches left-handed showing a lot of pop especially when you're throwing the fastball must keep him off base because once he gets on base he can do so many things to hurt you fastball hitter unless you can keep it up around the letters that's pretty true with most hitters he could pitch a ball high and tight low and away to keep those averages down all right to white who has been called out on strikes his first two times up he's been fooled by Bob Welsh dust and once again well she's at two strikes you mean the players don't buy their own two you walk in a locker room down you'll see 15 20 pairs of shoes but guys like Bob Welch have that comfortable pair they like to pitch in much these guys bought everything except their uniform yeah you mean those days are gone two strikes to Devon white still owing to Bob Welch heard Roger Clemens scouting report you see how he started Devon white off a nice breaking ball than a changeup then i doand to he tried to bust him with a high fastball probably get another breaker right here one ball and two strikes I guess Bob Welch who was shaky in the first inning gave up a home run to olerude in the second and got into a jam in the third gave up a one-out double in the fourth but pitching with the confidence of a four-run lead that early outburst by the ACE couldn't have come at a better time for Bob wells because it took away the pressure of having to duel Morris in a tight ball game [Music] two balls and two strikes to white curveball and grounded to McGuire covering as well and McGuire threw the ball behind him and Devon white is on base with two away first thing you'll hear that they work on that play hundreds of times in spring training right Jim PFP pitchers fielding practice that is one of the rites of spring training it's the first drill you'll see in Mark McGwire makes a nice stop but then as he completes the turn he throws the ball behind Bob Welch like his brother the quarterback he want to lead those receivers and he threw it behind him no chance for Welch to catch that pass and an error charged to McGwire that is the first error today by the A's who committed three yesterday so here comes Alomar who has been aboard twice with a single in a walk he was picked off first in the opening inning look white back to first base not likely that the Blue Jays would trailing 5 to 1 changeup missing outside want to know even if they wouldn't try to run down five to one one of the subtle little reasons that it might be a bit of a stretch that Tony LaRussa will use the step off of the throw over as he feels when a team gets a base runner if you throw that next pitch in there - a guy like Alomar they they got a little juice a little momentum a little adrenaline and he likes to disrupt that we begin a lot of other managers white is a 2-out base runner here in the top of the fifth inning five to one the A's lead to Blue Jays is the age series of two games apiece remember the situation is Robbie Alomar can deliver at the plate delivered the long ball yesterday he could but go to the opposite field pull the ball base hit for alomar white will stop at second base round which he gets it back so Robbie Alomar is aboard for the third time today two hits and a walk and the Blue Jays staged a two out Freddie another good at-bat takes a breaking ball on the outside part of the plate and you can circle the bottom of that fourth inning as you see Alomar single actually breaking ball team down and into but the bottom of that fourth inning by stopping the A's now with Joel Carter at the plate is given Toronto a chance to get back in it we have to go back to the third inning in the big outs so far for Bob Wells was getting Joe Carter on a fly ball one that he just missed hitting out of here with two runners on base in the third the game was scoreless at the time and EAS got five in the bottom of the third so here's let's see if he can try to bring the Jays closer runners are at first and second in two outs on a second white Robbie Alomar the runner at first Carter old for two today [Music] one ball and one strike two-parter nabob Welsh is up to 86 pitches here in the fifth inning and I think that he run probably is right on line with what Tony LaRussa wants gets through this inning I would we would be surprising to see that be the end of his day you can see him carefully keeping that ball from the middle of the plate out a mistake inside in this situation it's five four keep it outside while a base hit you're still in the three run Blue Jays have had several of their players hit homeruns but none from Carter we hit 34 during the regular season one from their bigs her yet kitchen smile back and it's 2 & 2 so once again before for Bob question it's the same guy the count two balls and two strikes [Applause] [Music] [Applause] three and two with Dave Winfield on the on-deck circle the runners will be off on the pits with two down [Music] and the pitch is hit in the air to centerfield Jerry Brown will be and that'll has gotten twice with two runners on base in the middle of the fifth inning it is filled five to one well hope you join us tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock Eastern Time game 5 here at the Coliseum David Cone and Dave Stewart will be the pitchers here at the Coliseum the A's leading five to one batting in the bottom of the fifth inning it'll be Mark McGwire Terry Steinbach and Carney Lansford against Todd stottlemyre the second picture of the day for the Blue Jays Jack Morris worked three and a third innings and gave up those five rise Leiter is missed one in one account [Music] Jack jr. Todd stottlemyre a lot of inspiration from Jack Morris very similar pitcher 12 years younger 37 years old guarded today he was the losing pitcher in the first game of the series find himself Owen to Africa middle and playing perfectly anilines ride handled by Alomar that's where Scouts will tell you where to play batters in Alomar took what normally would be a routine base hit up the middle by McGuire but he was there and there's one away here in the fifth inning playing on the left-field side of second base as you mentioned shifting McGwire to pull and Alomar the second baseman is able to make that catch there a Starbuck 9 Bach walked with the bases loaded in the third inning to force home a run after McGwire was passed intentionally and a move that backfired on earth at five-run inning as Terry swings and misses one and one similarities dick between Todd stottlemyre Jack Morris and Morris's said that said Todd reminds me of myself when I was about that age very animated shows his emotions on the [Music] tends to fight himself sometimes during spells like this when his control leaves it he was ejected twice this year back the second time he bumped umpire Jim Joyce so he does though lose it at times and that was one of the knocks against them is that the his temperament was not consistent pops it up Kelly Gruber in foul territory he makes the catch for out number two and right now let's check in with let's leave us Leslie deck a note on another team according to today's headlines it appears more and more likely that the Giants are leaving the Bay Area George Shinn the latest prospective buyer pulled out late yesterday how does the sea affect the A's well the club officials here said that the attendance of thousand people not as a game yesterday and today is more a function of a bad economy than the divided loyalty look dick I know as an old New York Giants fan you hate to see any team leave you know that his wealth is anyone has diverted from me enough time Leslie that's Monsieur base hit up the middle with two out and bubbling it in centerfield is Devon white and moving on the second is Lansford so a base hit and an error sure we'll be charged against white and that will be the fourth era of the ball game against the Blue Jays yesterday Devon white on a similar base hit tried to make believe that he lost the ball and induced the base runner under running and right here you can see him take his eye off the peaks up and takes the eye off the ball for just an instant and also it's that irregular terrain that the outfielders are experiencing and Lansford picks up on it the hustles in the second Mike bordick takes ball one bordick singled and bounced into a double-play both his at-bats came in the third inning when 10 hitters came up against Jack Morris Lansford is on its second base and two outs and there's a call strike in this series it was wonderful Aaron the first two games but there have been nine in the last two and of course if you mentioned the Colosseum has been a factor when the announcer says of a pelican window Tampa Bay and all probabilities their toughest thing when you're a youngster and you love a team and they take off and they move you know business is a very big part of it but you know there's a new part of the right he makes the catch and Carter slid to get away from Alomar the two worked well together and that will retire the side with a hit and error and one left and will return to Oakland Coliseum after this word from your local station five to one in favor of the A's and the Blue Jays will try to do some damage against Bob Welch who has thrown 90 pitches so far will be Winfield olerude in Maldonado here in the sixth inning well she's already given the A's that's for sure and back out for the 6th inning at the 90 pitch count you referred to Tony LaRussa said we'll monitor Dave Duncan has a good feel for how he's throwing and they're obviously comfortable with what they're seeing and two strikes to Dave Winfield when field has three hits in the series he had two of them in the first game moving a home run in a double but has only one hit since [Music] in a run in the ninth inning of yesterday's game that was a a shot back off of Dennis Eckersley at X Lipton couldn't handle in time and Winfield got credited for a hit broken background third party Lansford in the top of the city yeah Toronto were to come back and win this game then blue jay fans would say we know we have something special here because yesterday's win is not like the blue jays they win the tight games but not a lot of high-scoring games and also they do not come back to win games like Oakland Plus they won the fewest amount of games after trailing after six innings only six times this year when they were trailing after six that they came back to win so that bears up what you just said as olerude takes a call strike olerude has been a batting star today with a homer and a double but Welsh is ahead of him here no balls and two strikes he's got his motor going now that's the characteristic of Bob well she loves to work quickly that's why you'll see Carter's and hit her step out of the box now he's into the stretch run for as for his game today may be another inning two at the most 1 & 2 the olerude finally is retired by Bob Wells and that is strikeout number four by the veteran right-handers Stein backs target inside and that's where the pitch was most of olerud's hits have been off pitches on the outside half of the plate and three of the four strikeouts for Welsh have been called third strikes so there are two down and here is candy Maldonado hold for two fouled out of play this is an unusual game in this series and that the home team is winning you go back to 1980 the visiting team has won ten of the last 14 games played in the American League Championship Series first three games here the visitors won twice last year when the twins won in five the visiting club won four of those games so being the home club doesn't a heck of a lot in recent play in this championship series two strikes to count two candy maldonado who played with the San Francisco Giants who apparently are heading out of the Bay Area to Florida they also play for the Dodgers and played with both the Giants and the Dodgers those fears Riley came up with the Dodgers as a late inning replacement the outfield known as a good outfielder he went through a period of time where people didn't think he was very good out there more of a hitter strike out for them strikes and Bob Welsh has his first perfect inning today great view from above from the bud one airship and following its appearance here they'll use its eye on the sky camera at the Falcon 49er game at Candlestick Park October the 18th you know what I'll be there productive Lance Blankenship takes a call strike Blankenship has singled and walked scored a run and stole a base he's had a big day today you know a lot of people go to a lot of trouble and what they wear when they go to ball games something I'd say that was about an eight o'clock wake-up call to get all that ready for today is start with the earrings the earphones and all the pins and Blankenship is called out on strikes and is the first strikeout for Todd stottlemyre and there's one away in the sixth inning Lance doesn't seem very pleased by that call even down fiver five to one score Todd stottlemyre can come in here his first appearance in this year's championship series it'll something going for if he's used later on Rickey Henderson for the fourth go around for the Aged he's 1 for 3 has a single and has driven in a row safe on an era as the leadoff batter was safe when Manny LEED threw the ball away the opening batter and that kind of set the tone for the Blue Jays who have committed four errors in this game too bye Manny lead misson grounds at found the last time a team had four errors in LCS play have to go back to October 10th 1982 that's almost 10 years ago when the Milwaukee Brewers committed four in the game five against the California Angels still one again 1 & 2 now good hooks he's so relaxed right now down for you can see the sharpness of his stuff face it Ricky Henderson has his second hit of the ball game so he is starting to get going but I'll tell you he's not running very well at both in the outfield and on the bait packs he's been bothered by a lot of ailments this year but Henderson is aboard with one out [Applause] yesterday Henderson set the post-season steel mark with 21 one more than davey lopes he just gets back there even though you mentioned he's not running very well still enough speed to steal second basin after the missed opportunity in the fourth inning I think Tony LaRussa liked to tack on a runner to right here we'd like to eliminate that grand slam home run from tying the game so to get that five long lead is a number that managers pay attention to Jerry Brown who is old for one contender's in the pits taken and the knocked away and Henderson is in his second with a stolen base and Alomar was covering on the play so Ricky has his second of the series [Music] see wiggle those fingers gets the good jump you won't see him to look in toward the hitter because it's a straight steal and Alomar like Manny Li yesterday you try to make that sweep tag on the run with a powerful body like Henderson most of the time that ball be jarred loose as we've seen at the last two days one out of the count is Auto on the brown he did not like that call and brown stalks away from the plate to count no balls and two strikes Aaron looked like that fastball was just above the knees one two score [Music] ball hit to Alomar he looks Henderson and throws to first for the out as Henderson goes to third right now let's check in with Leslie mr. Leslie dick we told you in Game one how Ruben Sierra where's the number 21 on an earring because he idolizes Roberto Clemente well this morning Robbie Alomar told me that down in Puerto Rico the young people idolized Ruben Sierra that because the era can run and hit hit for power they actually called him the next Roberto Clemente of course Robbie was too modest to say that I'm sure he has a few fans there too passing the torch that's exactly what the good ones to pass it to maybe someday we'll where someone will wear an earring with number 29 on it two down and a Henderson [Music] Ruben Sierra takes a fastball for strike one [Music] Sierra was the first matter that Stottlemeyer faced when he came into the fourth inning and he bounced out to olerude on assistant Reuben has an RBI by virtue of a sacrifice fly back in the third inning and walked in the first Henderson at third-base Jim mention is looking for that five lead [Applause] he'll the third-base umpire dinking there by the Sierra held up and accounted now to a one Jays got a run in the second on an older days after thwarting a bluejay threat in the top of the third with Welsh getting Carter scored five times that has been a story drive to right field and Carter Dodds can't make the play it's a v6 here on his way to second and he slides in safely as Henderson scores the sixth run of the game [Applause] Ruben Sierra with his third extra-base hit of this series has not been his fourth run of the LCS you talk about Roberto Clemente I have never seen Sierra play with this kind of energy when he was in Texas he watched to show the world in the postseason what kind of player he is and as Carter makes that nice effort I mean Sierra just flying around the bases going to second base banes it's a sharp grounder but right at Robbie Alomar to retire the side [Applause] here's what you were talking about the way Sierra those faces with bird six-two on the score after six innings six runs eight hits and one error for the A's one run five hits and four missed cues for Toronto and the new centerfielder for Oakland is Willie Wilson [Music] for obviously for defensive purposes first pitch Kelly Gruber lifts high in the air to left centerfield Wilson is under it and makes the catch so he gets a chance on the first batter and there's one gone in the seventh inning Bob Welsh is ok Willie they put you in let me get you in the ball game you're in for defense and Jerry Brown did a good job I wanted to say Jim while he was in there with a sacrifice a walk and he gave VA some aggressive play in the number 2 spot in the order which is why Tony LaRussa loves to play him in hit him second the best number 2 hole hitter he has borders so for two from well t2c Welsh's confidence increasing as the game goes on he seemed fortunate to be hanging in there in the early going and really was on the brink of being knocked out that's what batting supportin can do for you although Border's lifts one out to centerfield that will drop for a base hit and the fourth hit of the series for Pat borders all these outs are gravy outs for Bob Welch because we mentioned Tony LaRussa would keep him out a bit of a pitch count but because this is his only start that he'll get and he is in good rhythm throwing strikes I think he's extending him a little more than many thought he would and the words are just out of our mouths and Rick Honeycutt who it's two thirds of an inning yesterday and the only left-hander in appearance in this series begins to throw one out and one on and Manny Lee who's 1 for 2 with a single the batter here 6 to 1 to score in favor of the Athletics [Music] you said it right all gravy now with Welsh steak to a big lead and going into the seventh inning Hunnicutt up with white and Alomar at the top of the lineup that they've hit so well from the left side that they bring Honeycutt in and turn to her out make up hit right hand [Music] as a foul ball and two strikes to Manny leap even though averages may say that a hitter is a better hitter for example right-handed than left what managers will do if a hitter has had three at bats left-handed turn him around because that first at-bat as a switch hitter is usually the toughest at-bat not only that both white and Alomar have been more effective as left-handed hitters this year although really for Robbie Alomar it's almost the wash he's hitting about 310 and only three points between hitting lefty and righty one ball and two strikes borders the base runner with one out here in the top of inning number seven to a to Natalie Dave Stewart comes back tomorrow to make his second start he worked seven in two thirds innings number one and no decision in the game won by the A's four to three David : who pitched brilliantly for the Blue Jays strikes out as the fifth strikeout of the game for Bob well on a good high fastball in Oakland and Dave Duncan their pitching coach has to be very encouraged by today's performance should Oakland come back and win this series Bob Welch has looked so much sharper today in preparation for a World Series that he's looked all year Duncan who's done a terrific job is pitching coach in tune and in sync with his manager Tony LaRussa so with two down Devon white right well Schnapp normally is Jim as mentioned an overpowering and strikeout pitch of these days the only NEC did not get a strikeout we're the second and fifth of his six strikeouts Hunnicutt still loosening up in the A's bullpen 1 & 2 well she has been throwing strikes in the last two innings in particular 21 pitches in the last two innings 16 of them have been strikes so the number for starter who has been in the spotlight and is pitched in big games and has won as many as 27 his career for personal problems you know fighting the demons of alcoholism daya was supposed to pitch in the game which the earthquakes quake struck in the Bay Area Candlestick Park coming back as the number four pitcher and doing a whale of a job for Tony LaRussa two balls and two strikes two white pretty good staff when you can send a picture with almost 200 career wins to the mound as you're number four starter behind Stuart poor and darling - - satellite strikeout number seven one hit in one left in the middle of the seventh inning the a is in front six to one seventh-inning stretch for the Oakland A's or in front six to one they've out hit the Blue Jays eight to six and Mark McGwire up for the fourth time valve tips it into borders glove for a strike McGuire is old for two with a base on balls Donald Meyer who relieved Jack Morris in the fourth inning and now the Blue Jays have full connectivity and a line shot foul down the line into the A's bullpen but Mike Timlin is up and throwing forward Toronto where is Timlin who worked yesterday the bullpens did not distinguish themselves on either side in yesterday's third game so everyone talked about what a deviation from the norm yesterday's game was for both of these ball clubs the way they played in the field a high-scoring game not tight pitching in not effective pitching out of the bullpen that's unusual [Music] wanted to particularly Twain Ward who was really not pleased with the way he threw and of course Wharton pointed out that Jack gotta get the rust off it has been almost the week since he hath thrown one hopper to Manny Li and McGuire is retired one out in the eighth seventh inning talked about some hitters on lowball hitters why because when you hold the bat in a vertical position it's much easier to drop it on a pitch down here that it is to catch up with it up above the belt or around the letters and that's why Mark McGwire drops the barrel on that low pitch that was far enough away so Todd stottlemyre got him out but that's why he handles the pitch down better than up Steinbach grounds it to third bad hop with Gruber handles it it makes the play le Gruber had of make the play with the bad hop and there were two down in the seventh you mentioned we've seen some good leather work from the guys at third both Gruber and Lansford no one's getting a nice comfortable hopping that in zombies night way short and high nothing regular they'll be happy to get back to Sky Dome on the artificial surface as far as true hops are concerned and if the aides go on and win this game we will be going back to Sky doll forward on Wednesday night or Wednesday afternoon Carney Lansford the batter two for three today run batted in of the series the beginning today for the A's the third after Toronto being close to scoring some runs off the Bob Wells Joe Carter retired on a fly to left field five runs came across for the A's against Jack Morris in the third Lansford slices it out of play one walls got to look like a beach ball coming out of the pitchers hand the McGuire despite that low average a lot of good swings - - now to Carney lansford's with 2,000 the carnies a lot like Mark McGwire when you see them get ready to hit that bad is straight up and down and you'll handle that pitch down around the knees breaking ball and here's Gruber makes another good play there done sit over and only for the second time in this game the A's have gone in order we go to the 8th here at the Oakland Coliseum 6 to 1 the score this game summary is sponsored by AT&T big five run third inning for the A's as Morris was knocked out earliest in postseason play four errors for Toronto and the only name out on that list is Bob Welsh who has pitched terrific baseball through the first seven and coming out in the eighth inning to face first pitch is a strike Alomar has been aboard three times today with two singles and a walk Wells picked him off first base back in the first inning three times this year he is pitched eight innings as we've talked about during the game his job was to keep the ease in the game get him to the sixth or seventh he's certainly done more than that for strike two in the Oakland bullpen Jeff as pitch one game number two he's warming up for the A's but well she's certainly gotten stronger and the more velocity on his fastball the last three or four innings he's ahead of Alomar who has not been able to retire today one ball and two strikes - a - well I think that's the that's the key factor right there because he has worked at good rhythm a lot of strikes Tony LaRussa said hey save the bull then let's extend them a little bit this will be as always charge foul ball smack down the right-field line the seven strikeouts for Bob Welsh our season's high for him he never had more than five in any game in fact his postseason career record is eight that was against the Dodgers [Music] World Series still two balls and two strikes the count to Alomar [Music] continues to throw in the Blue Jays bullpen Karen the A's pan as time is called for a base hit could be extra bases Ciera retrieves Alomar going into second base dives headfirst with a double off the eighth-inning you know that LaRussa won't take too many more chances before going to the pen might as well throw it down the middle or let him throw it up and hit it pitch him outside he takes it to left he's hit a breaking ball and now a pretty good fastball on the inside half so there is no one way to pitch Roberto Alomar the A's are finding that out and here comes Tony LaRussa out of the A's dugout and Bob well should get a tremendous ovation when he leaves the mouth [Music] Jeff parrot who was a former Atlanta brave and had a nine in one record in 66 games the new pitcher parrot worked 1/3 of an inning in the second game of this series and will face Joe Carter with Alomar having a big day with three hits in three official times at bat he's on at second six to one the A's lead Artur is over three today you mentioned that one third of an inning and those are little moves and sometimes fans think are meaningless when Tony LaRussa brought him in in that game just to face one hitter it was to get the playoff jitters out of the way hopefully be more comfortable in a situation like this no strikes to Carter mentioned earlier that the Blue Jays have not rallied to come from behind many times this year and the A's have also protected leaves extremely well [Music] he's successful so he must have seen something in Paris delivery and parrot not paying any attention so he took it if it had been closed I'm sure he wouldn't have gone that's one of those places it's only a good play if you make it and Roberto Alomar we've talked about his baseball intelligence he said there's no way that I'll keep from making it the danger as if Joe Carter would have hit a screamer right at an infielder who would have been a bad player they double play there's a strike three and one to Carter for alomar that is his third stolen base in as many attempts in the series [Music] top of the eighth inning these lead six to one [Music] and a foul ball hit right in front of the both men where you see dennis eckersley starting to throw sure Eckersley would like nothing better than to have a real good outing next time he pitches he is you know not giving up any big damage but he has been nicked four hits like you did give up an RBI infield hit the shot by Whitfield yesterday there's a ball hit into left field it will be a base hit by Joe Carter Alomar will score and it is now a six to two ball game now the Athletics have blown a lead of five runs or more only once this season so they have protected those advantages but it is six to two still nobody out Carter is on at first base and that is his first RBI of the series Tony LaRussa would like to see Dennis Eckersley held off until the ninth inning that's what he'd like to see him have is good outing but he consents with the heart of the Blue Jays ordered the most productive batting order in the American League even with the for Riley he won't wait too long to bring on the egg Winfield of hitless today so before that single by Carter they're big hitters and reinforced lock Carter and Winfield and going on for six right tendance today forty-seven thousand seven hundred and thirty to about a thousand under capacity [Music] would be aligned on a base hit into the corner and really cut off well by Henderson the throw to third base and save his Joe Carter very nearly thrown out bass in a disaster now Henderson is flexing that left knee after going over to cut that ball off at the foul line well we don't often talk about Ricky Henderson's ability in the outfield but this is a terrific play right there to cut the ball off and then make a throw almost nailing Joel Carter and would that have been a bad play for the Blue Jays he just slides in my head of that tag that could have snuffed out a rally a bit of a gamble by Carter and he just gets in under that tag that's great play by Henderson Anderson continuing to rub that left knee and he is trying to work out the kinks now and left-field I talked about the fact that he didn't look awfully impressive in running after foul balls and on the base pass but he short took off into that corner to cut off would have been a short double by Dave Winfield and Tony LaRussa's coming out of the mouth as you mentioned he would have preferred to use Dennis Eckersley in the ninth inning but it may get the call right here reason the A's picked up Jeff Russell is because even with the 9 and 1 record Jeff Jarrett had not been real sharp the last month Harrod leaves and the cheers of her Eckersley the man coming in not the man leading and will be back here in the eighth inning in just a moment as the fog rolls in over San Francisco there's the city by the bay there in the East Bay Dennis Eckersley making his third appearance of the series he saved Game one for Jeff Russell the winning pitcher pitched one inning in that game gave up the hit he gave up two hits yesterday in a third of an inning in the losing cause often times managers try to preserve relievers during the season it's at times like this that they'll stretch them a little Tom Henke and yesterday's game and now Dennis Eckersley being called on to get six outs here with a homer and a double and three trips to the plate as X steps often looks winfield back to first six to two to score and this is a save situation for Dennis Eckersley because the tying run would be in the on-deck circle two runners are on first and third nobody out here in the eighth inning [Music] the ground ball base hit up the middle quarter will score and Winfield's will churn around a third base and it is now 6 to 3 the corners still nobody out frankly dennis eckersley has not looked sharp in his last couple of outings in the last weekend of the season nor perhaps in the series and against a hitter who's had a good deal of success against him and as most American League hitters if you're going to get him that first pitch is off of the best one to hit Carter got him yesterday now olerude today he has given up four hits in his three appearances and now cowled candy maldonado who hit a big home run yesterday Hitler's today the tying run at the plate and there's a line drive base hit to right field and Winfield will score and it's now six to four now the tying runs are on base all have touched Dennis Eckersley here in the eighth inning three runs are in and it's a six to four ball game Wow that has to have a pacing and a little antsy in that dugout pitch they're not accustomed to seeing this you mentioned heck not quite as sharp I think the the number of innings the number of appearances they're bound to take a little sting out of the pitches when you get into October and it's pretty evident from what we've seen from Eckersley here the championship series except for Game one so the Blue Jays are down six two one and here's Kelly Gruber looking for his first hit and he fouls it off the end of the bat strike one let's see if Gruber wants a new battery three pitches three swings two hits in a foul ball they're sticking with their philosophy see the reason and you may see it in this pattern right now each pitch to go farther off the corner either in or out to Kelly Gruber you know one of the big factors of dennis eckersley is the intimidation factor where you know team's seen him warming up and they say oh no X is going to come in we're in a lot of trouble but now a lot of that intimidation factor is worn by the boards and I don't think the Blue Jays feel that way about a couple of hits like the Blue Jays have come up with will take that intimidation factor away see the shadows sneaking in behind home plate not a factor yet but in another half hour they could be Kelly Gruber with a new weapon and the counter strike one to him still nobody out a double and four singles here in the eighth inning [Applause] and freeze these pictures and it's dennis eckersley into the mound now this is outside one ball on one strike six to four to score and the Blue Jays have out hit the A's 11 to 8 yesterday it was the Hayes who out hit the Blue Jays who won the game [Music] the tying run is at first base lead run at the plate and there's a fly ball hit to center field makes the catch for the first half as the runners go back to their bases Wilson was playing to come [Applause] there for exactly this reason Willie Wilson the experienced centerfielder and that was a much more difficult catch than what it looked like because of the Sun factor here in Oakley and with that ball sinking now as Pat borders who singled his last time up the ban here in the eighth-inning weapon in his arsenal extras Lee is getting that first pitch in for the strike no more first pitch fastball zazz he had the first couple hitters now he's going to the slider on pitch one [Applause] one in one the borders [Music] sundays with a record of 65 and for games that dennis eckersley appeared in this year he did not have his first blown save until Augustine behind two and one [Music] interesting as to what motivates players in pitches to perform Eckersley admits fear of failure drives him the first is in time for out number two the runners advance to second and third along with Jim Cott this is dick Stockton's here at the Oakland Coliseum Game four of the American League Championship Series the A's were breezing along six to one until this eighth-inning with Bob Welsh doing yeomen work as a starter not expected to go more than five innings but he worked into the eighth inning was taken out by parrot relieved him in and Dennis Eckersley Duncan is going to the mound and we're going to see a pinch-hitter for Manny Lee Ed Sprague who sucks tech for a single in game number one will come up to pinch hit for Manuel Lee and that's why Dave Duncan is going to the mound because on that pinch-hit appearance Sprague took a first pitch fastball about five high now the book on him is that he is a lowball hitter right now I think Duncan Steinbach Eckersley saying this is the biggest out of the game let's figure out what kind of a pattern we're going to go after it with the know Sprague is going to be conscious again of that first pitch [Music] in scoring position for the blue second and third a second base with two down he would like to pork one cup the area where he starred as a college player ed Sprague on a Stanford Toronto bullpen Duane Ward and Mike Timlin are throwing [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] breaking ball the regular-season Eckersley allowed only two inherited runners to score and today he has matched that told and the Blue Jays are one swing away from tying this game [Applause] one strike they lead in the series two games to one and it looked like a cakewalk for several innings before the Jays struck for five consecutive hits here in the eighth [Applause] and a foul ball out of play and now it's one and two than the pinch-hitter Ed Sprague even though Oakland shade Sprague around a bit as a pull hitter you could see Eckersley Pitt Eckersley pitching pattern and all the room in right-center I mean Sprague is almost walking across the plate as he swings he wants to protect against that outside strike and take it the other way on its feet now looking for the strikeout by Eckersley [Applause] but the Bluejays score three runs and they leave the time runners aboard and Eckersley strikes out spray we moved to the bottom of the eighth inning it's six to four in favor of Oakland [Music] [Applause] Mike Timlin is the new pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays here in the bottom of any number 8 Timlin worked 1/3 of an inning yesterday and gave up 1 hit new shortstop is Alfredo Griffin replacing Manuel Lee talk about the competition between these two teams it goes back to the 89 championship series and Eckersley said no secret the guys in that dugout don't like me and this is his reaction when he gets that inning inning strikeout I mean he stares down that entire bench Mike bordick starts it off for the A's in the last of the earth off of Timlin and takes strike one bordick one for two has a base hit and a score to rub and we wondered yesterday about dennis eckersley physical condition because his elbow may not have been in a hundred percent shape down the stretch of the season I mean ball the Griffin he gets a chance right away and throws out for take one out this copyrighted telecast is presented by authority of major league baseball and may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form without the express written consent of major league baseball that was talked about during the end of the regular season but if you saw the break on the sliders that he threw that inning you don't throw sliders like that with a bad elbow he might have had the problem toward the end of the year when he back-to-back alone see here's Lance Blankenship ball one to Blankenship he's been aboard twice with a hip knocked in a run or scored a run and stolen a base shadows creeping up just in front of home plate area foul off to the left one and one now the count [Music] so another tight game between these teams no breathers in this series four to three in the opener on Wednesday night with the A's winning by a run then the Jays won three two one with cones terrific pitching and then the Jays one yesterday seven to five we couldn't put these away couldn't catch up I think Toronto very respectful of Auckland yesterday was talking about how ban they just kept coming back we couldn't get a big enough lead and I think that's flip-flop today Oakland is going to have a lot of admiration even if it holds up here at 6 4 beware the Blue Jays would come back two balls and a strike breaking ball is in two and - in fact cito Gaston when we asked him about the Oakland miscues yesterday he's is looking could be a it could be us today that makes errors in the field and he was prophetic for errors for the - to the blankenship with one out nobody second hit for blankenship today we squandered additional scoring opportunity back in the third inning when bordick it into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded they've had other chances since would like to get some more up on the board boy psyche having back-to-back leadoff hitters with Henderson and Blankenship both draw a lot of walks both have good speed ricky force with more power the word on Henderson is he did twist his need his left knee and they were working on it that's Barry Weinberg the trainer this is earlier and they're going to check in more after the game but here is Henderson who has two hits today has had a successful day at the plate trying to keep Blankenship close with one out of the egg understand when he seemed to aggravate to me it was over to cut off what might have been an extra base hit into the left field corner Mina thought with us a minute all strike to Ricky six-two for the score liaison in the six one in the second and three in the top of this eighth inning this time of the day we talked about the shadows not only around the whole plate but this is what Joe Carter and Regency arrow will be looking up into very difficult Sun field this time of the day [Music] hi two balls in one strike [Applause] excuse me dick ideal hit and run count right here another look at those shadows Dave McKay with a quick word with Lance Blankenship at first base just to make sure he had the right side why is it ideal Tim one has to fall a strike and Henderson is a good contact it [Applause] and the Henderson upset with himself as he fouls it off to the right a good jump that time by Blankenship you know the A's tendencies a little bit mr. well I think that's probably any major league Managers tendencies on two balls and a strike that is the ideal hit run count like I said any major league club would do this under the circumstance Blankenship quickly looking at last fantasy now if the hit and run didn't work whether he might get to a chance to steal a base that's the guy said the advantage Ricki at last Blankenship [Applause] two in two and one out [Applause] the A's of stolen 12 bases in this series in fact Willie Wilson and Walt Weiss who are not in the lineup when this game started had 8 of the 10 stolen bases coming into the game Wilson will get a chance to hit he's on deck as he went in to play center field for Jerry Brown [Applause] line drive base hit white retrieves in center field and blankenship gaze into third base so they execute the hitman run perfectly on two and two and the a is with runners at the corners in one outs and Rickey Henderson with his third hit of the game they've waited for Ricky to join the party and he's joined and that's the kind of production that helped his team win so many championships gives you an idea right there yeah back he's back is he ever now a conference at the mound with Willie Wilson coming to the plate obviously what to do if the ball was it to you the score is six to four you got to make sure if you're going to get an inning-ending double play the last thing two J's need are for the maze to open up a three-run advantage going into the ninth inning or if you bring the infield in as the Jays are going to do a Ricky's going to take off for second base no chance for a Griffin or Alomar to get back to second base and stop him so they wanted to make sure between Pat borders and template and the infielders where the throw was going here is Wilson four for 12 Neah six stolen bases first pitch in a ground ball hit right at Griffin the whole Quran Blankenship in a rundown Kelly Gruber pans out Blankenship Henderson will go to third and holding it first is Willie Wilson so that was a fine play by Griffin because Blankenship was going the break he was about a third of the way down and they got the lead runner and there are two down here in the bottom of the eighth inning obviously contact play on right here as soon as the contact is made you see Blankenship go Griffin with no chance to turn to because Roberto Alomar was well in on the grass so he waits for Lance to commit himself ideally you'd like to run the runner back to third base is prevent Henderson from getting there so the a is do the best they can despite giving up and out so Wilson is safe on a fielder's choice Galen Cisco the Jays pitching coach is going to the mound and the play went from Griffin suborders to Gruber six to two to five if you are keeping score Jimmy key and Mark Eichorn have been growing in the bullpen Ruben Sierra dangerous hitter the last couple of games is waiting to hit there are two down and the score is still 60 good speed at first and Willie Wilson and again the we see so many conferences on the mound in baseball today and most of them revolve around situations like this if Wilson takes off where are you going to throw the ball what's the pitching pattern maril says let's break this thing up in Cisco is heading back to the dugout he and I corn in the bullpen by Todd stottlemyre who proceeded Timlin to the mound Jimmy key a starter all year long relegated to the pan with cito Gaston deciding to go with three starters of right now [Applause] liyan hasn't really worked out maras lost the first game and was knocked out in the fourth inning today here's Ruben Sierra he has two runs batted in and assball is it for strike one Sierra now with four runs batted in in this series Ian Steinbach lead the AIDS two down runners at first and third check swing and a foul ball ruber going after it Ruben Sierra uses his front leg almost like a pitcher uses his leg to stride toward the hitter watch him pick it up swing it back and then step right toward the pitcher as if he's throwing the ball or for him to bat [Applause] Oh pictures motion with a bat in your hand [Applause] the area in a two-strike hole against him [Applause] all back so another wild game first two games in Toronto were marked by outstanding starting pitching have been some home runs but relatively low scoring games four to three and three one but these two games here in Oakland have been wild affairs plenty of miscues in the field and games coming down to the stretch to the final inning the pitchers have not held center stage Paul strike three so the A's leave runners at first and third and a blue jays coming up for their last turn trailing six to full sitting here at oakland dennis eckersley pitching his second inning of work will face the top of the jays order white Alomar and Carter the A's lead six to four then 21 hits in the game 11 by Toronto birth pitches a curve ball inside one a no to white he is over for today and has struck out three times but acing Eckersley for the first occasion [Music] third-base umpire indicate that white did swing the quiet series thus far for the Blue Jays centerfield [Music] as you mentioned Eckersley his first pitch a breaking ball until the Blue Jay hitters ready for that first first pitch they're changing lanes and misses two balls and two strikes decorously pitch two full innings in seven games this season so this has not been the norm for out of play to the left it started in perhaps their biggest series of the year in Minnesota a game that the ball was being knocked all over the ballpark Oakland wanted 12 to 10 but Eckersley came in and got six consecutive outs and that was the start of the times when Tony LaRussa would bring him into the eighth inning and look at that number 81 in one [Music] loft entering the was in that final series in the regular season against the Brewers here and they had the division crown draft up three balls and two strikes so a big pitch up coming to Devon white if white were to get aboard the tying run would come to the plate Lu J's battling back unlike their pattern a line drive to left field and Ricky Henderson try to make a shoestring rabbit goes by groundings second is white and he's going to go to third base as the throat comes in white is on it third with nobody out [Music] Rickey Henderson trying to make a terrific catch and the bolt went by it's a single and an era charged to Henderson and left and he made such a great play cutting off the potential double the inning before this but here he has to keep this ball in front of it the ball is hit hard enough that if Ricky comes in and keeps it in front of it white with that great speed makes it to third easily that keeps the double play in order Dave Duncan is out of the dugout I don't know how many times Duncan went to the mound to talk to Dennis Eckersley this season one act was working just checking maybe on a game pitching pattern because you've seen a lot of good at-bats against Eckersley take another look at Ricky coming in on that sync see right there instead of trying to make a one-hand grab with the glove he almost has to give up your body and somehow slide in front of that ball and keep white at first base wasn't able to do it second error of the ballgame for the A's that makes five in the last two games we've had six errors overall and here's a Lamar who has three hits two singles in a double base L bar represents the tying run at the plate one outside Dec is Joe Carter and Dave Winfield Apollo [Music] speaking of elbow problems Jeff Russell really not on call today because his elbows bothered at the last month of Tony LaRussa liked to stay away from him line drive to the opposite field and it's fine Tom Henke we picked up the same yesterday in the Blue Jays seven-25 victory is throwing in the bullpen now for Talal Aires hankie as we said the two games thus far here have not been for the relief for for either side pitches in tight that evens the count to Alomar 2 & 2 and another foul ball saw that signal right there from Terry Steinbach and immediately thought of the famous Kirk Gibson homerun there trying to get Alomar with a backdoor slider he is such a good hitter inside pitches he doesn't even flinch on try to trick it [Music] hooking up on this game is tied [Music] [Applause] with his second home run in as many days has tied the game and a Toronto bench [Applause] six the score has homered with white abour on just about every kind of pitch you can throw at him he has been right on all of them trying to get a fastball look like Steinbach wanted it away and Alomar knew immediately game tied so much for the shadows being difficult for the hitters to see four hits for Roberto Alomar 2 singles a double and a big two-run home run still nobody out in the top of the ninth inning and Joe Carter the batter Carter singles off of jiae's can taste a big rally here they've come from behind after trailing six to one now they're looking to move in front and if they do they would open up a commanding three to one lead in this series a stunning turn of events unlike what Dennis Eckersley had experienced this season that team is not experienced what they're going through right now it's a high foul fly chasing it is McGuire but it's out of play and we've said before when Oakland comes into clubhouse in the morning the objective is let's get Eckersley in the ball game because then they win the only loss after they'd won the crowd so this is an experience they have not had yet [Music] high flyball hit to left centerfield falling forward is Willie Wilson in centerfield and he makes the catch for the first out one out in the Devon white led off with a line drive to left field Rickey Henderson trying to make the catch couldn't make the play and it went through his legs and went off his glove actually and white ended up at third a single and an error charged to Henderson in in Alomar he'll give you what you need how many times have we said that and homered yesterday over the left field fence well this one in the right field for his second home run of the series and here's Dave Winfield he's one for four [Music] ball one to Winfield Jim Corsi is warming up in the A's bullpen all the charts they have on Roberto Alomar as to what he hits what comp they might as well burn them all and say throw the first pitch right down the middle take your chances [Music] two balls in those strikes well the facts of the matter are that dennis eckersley has not been right his art problems they have a group but he has not been right and we haven't seen him effective since the before the final series of the regular season [Music] and I don't imagine he will be taking if he gets a pitch in his zone let her fly [Music] there's a [Applause] they on base tied six-six the A's had a is six to one lead going into the seventh inning but the Blue Jays have tied it up getting three in the eighth and two here in the ninth inning on Robbie Alomar's two-run home run Oh Jim this was considered a lot when people talked about the strengths and weaknesses of the teams they said well whoever has the lead going into the late innings while their relievers will shut the door hankie and ward for Toronto but especially Dennis Eckersley for Oakland so much for that feat lineups have taken over these last two games I guess that's why they played the game yeah they don't look at the stats those guys in the uniform state his play - pinche reaches out and hits a bounding ball the Blankenship Winfield retired and there are two here the top of the night [Applause] only one team has overcome a five-run deficit to win a game in the history of the LCS game 3 in 1988 when the A's rallied from a 5 nothing deficit to beat the Red Sox 10 to 6 at the only time a team has come back to win after trailing by 5 the A's have tied it not had a lead and here is olerude certainly has the ability to give it to him why at Oakland bench goose Gossage Dave Henderson is not active either one of them on the roster producer one strike to olerude who has three hits today a homer a double and a single and two RBIs Alomar and olerude and Benton the batting stars today for tomorrow and now to one account [Applause] looking ahead to the bottom of the ninth inning for the A's it'll be beans McGuire and Steinbach the number four five and hitters four five and six hitters and olerude singles to left field for his fourth hit for alomar and olerude each having a four hit game here in this fourth game of the series again anything out over the plate john olerude just keeps that front shoulder in and hits it the other way and the majority of his hits have been just that direction Derrick Bell will go into pinch run for olerude and mean that Jill Carter probably will move to first base in the ninth inning and Tony LaRussa going out to the mound he's looked in to the bullpen where Jim horsey has been thrown and that's going to be all for Dennis Eckersley rare occasions when dennis eckersley gets to relieve himself [Applause] gave up five hits and charged with two one will be back tied at six to us right after that base hit by john olerude dennis eckersley took a peek into the Oakland dugout to either say I've had enough arm doesn't feel just right and combine that with the fact that Jim course he holds runners out a little bit better than Eckersley LaRussa makes the change and he is responsible for Derrick Bell the pinch runner Jim Corsi is the new pitcher for the ACE he has worked in two games total of one inning native of Newton Massachusetts and effective against left-handed batters as well with a good sinker and as you pointed out can hold runners on Derrick Bell went to pinch run for olerude and here is candy Maldonado who singled and knocked in a run last time up tied at six 614 hits for the Blue Jays while you need a computer just to add up the totals today with the runs hits and errors we got one we got our own human computer Bharti Downey Aronoff yup Ward and Hankey are throwing in the bullpen for Toronto chili a little game right here between LaRussa Steinbach Derrick Bell paying close attention to that lead run Lansford is guarding the line at third base first pitch ball Wanda Maldonado there's Lansford to prevent a possible extra-base hit especially with a man at first base he has the speed to score from first toughest position in the park right now Ruben Sierra and right field fight that son see of course he fairly lifts his leg up delivering that ball that's to try to keep bail at first base but throw strikes at the same time Maldonado the batting hero for the Blue Jays yesterday with a home run in a single he is knocked in three runs in the last two days two outs 4c behind to an old this is what the stinker and is now three balls and no strikes and one pitch away the lead run into scoring position on deck is Kelly Gruber the A's were sailing along headed to even the series at 2-2 with a 6-1 lead and the Blue Jays have erupted the last two minutes three and one they run to the as eight men came up Ricky Henderson who has done the job at the plate shaken up with an aggravated knee in the outfield and committed one of the three errors today two errors body ace not a real big lead doesn't appear that Bell is going to try to steal that guest I'd like to get a 3-2 count Blue Jays with runners at first and second Maldonado on first about Derek Bell in scoring position he represents the lead run here in the ninth with his four time doesn't have to wait for the 3-2 count got a walk instead to get that lead run into scoring position [Music] a trying afternoon for Tony LaRussa firm to say the least and for that man [Music] five hips given up by Xers leaves and most he has given up in one appearance this season there's Kelly Gruber who is over for horsey facing ruler runners at first and second and two hours [Applause] all on inside and with the score tied Bob Welsh can no longer this game he pitched seven superb innings was taken out after Alomar led off the eighth with a double and it was two prescribed move for Tony LaRussa at the time but his relievers haven't filled a bill for him guarantee would Welch left the game after that performance Oakland had to take a deep breath say we got more out of Welsh than we expected and Eckersley coming in that's as close to a lock as you can have those guys thought a little different feel about the Bluejays whether they win this series or not they're scrapping and battling [Music] LaRussa is on the pole one pitch away from loading the bases to see how quickly they can get somebody up that they have confidence in that control a strike Rick Honeycutt maybe three balls in those stripes [Applause] Eckersley and now Corsi and Honeycutt who was up earlier growing now in the bullpen for the aid and the bases are loaded four times six six and read the eyes of either manager with the dark glasses and LaRussa going to the mound half orders coming in and he may walk the experienced man of Honeycutt in this situation - even though it's a left-hander the number one objective here is who could throw it in the strike zone and at least give the fuelers a chance to get it out and Honeycutt had been up earlier much more accustomed to the pressure of this situation and Corsi well he's going to go with Corsi he gives them a vote of confidence of course he has that sinking fastball and it comes in around knee-high and he's looked in at durwood Merill he thought some of those pitches were strikes that were just sinking all over these so he's got a little battle going on with himself right now Derrick Bell is on a third base maldonado at second there's Bell is candy and Gruber the runner at first Pat borders one with a single the bases are loaded two out of five six six and the inside corner though is showing confidence in Jim horsey from Luton Massachusetts turn to the Oakland organization after going to Houston for the 1991 season and that was a critical first piss to get a hit on him after falling behind three and O on the previous to what I bet borders attempted to stick his knee in front of us say take one for the team that came close to hitting for strike two one ball two strikes [Applause] they control that breaking ball and get hitters like boarders to commit on [Applause] [Music] and a good stop in the dirt by Steinbach with a runner at third base two balls and two strikes to Pat borders be tough to see around that hoof plate area right now only for the hitter but Steinbeck as well [Applause] bases are loaded there's the situation in a tie game top of any number 9 [Applause] at the plate well this has got to be the most tense situation we have faced in this series and we have had a few with a home run in the ninth to win the game vanes on the road before the A's in game 1 : with his pitching [Applause] [Music] got Pinson tonight with a 2-1 lead this tops them all so far [Applause] off the fists and a-rollin to shortstop bordick makes the play in time the Blue Jays Alomar's 2-run homer but Corsi gets the third out with the bases loaded and the A's will come up at the bottom of the ninth inning all tied up because of that man great pictures from above on a great game below by the bud one airship Maurice my lemons Mike Hansen Corky Bellinger at the helm and now the A's will come up in the bottom of the ninth inning and the new pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays is Duane Ward who had his problems yesterday in one inning gave up two runs on three hits other changes defensively for the Toronto Blue Jays in right-field Derek Bell goes into play and Joe Carter now moves in the first base so for the second time in the series Gaston makes the changes with Belle and Wright and Carter at first in Game one here his veins his home run off of Jaguars leading off and that was the margin of victory as Oakland won four to three and now Baines is in a situation here leading off in the ninth against Ward in a 6 6 game [Applause] foul ball on the first pitch and beans has hit Duane Ward very well 6 415 and ward isn't aware of how tough Danes has been advantage switches to that pulp in Toronto's because Ward and then hinky do not give up the long ball very often now that the plate and the count is two strikes talking award before the game he said you know I was did not have a chance to really get loosened up but not pitched in a week you would know more but he said I was short arming and I didn't really have the full extension and really didn't let it loose and the ball was going out of the strike zone Brown the first quarter and he can't hold on first baseman Carter played in four games in the regular season and Baines the potential winning run is aboard at first base outstanding second baseman but often times throwing on the run like that puts a lot of pressure on your first baseman especially an inexperienced one like Carter a quick decision but if Roberto Alomar could have planted that foot and made a stronger throw they get Baines easel and we're going for Harold Baines [Applause] boss is running for B don't think you'll be funny box was a hero for the A's this year with a big three run home run to beat the Minnesota Twins to allow the A's to draw even with Minnesota Mark McGwire over three little walk the pitch swung on and Miss Porter's pumped a couple of times couldn't pull the trigger and in a second with a stolen bases Eric five wicked foxes jump I mean as soon as Ward picks up that leg he takes off and McGwire swings at the pitch to protect a difficult pitch for Pat borders to handle and he said no chance I'm not going to throw this into centerfield [Applause] the 13th stolen base of the series for the A's [Applause] great calm down the first baseline and he'll be tagged out by there is a big Slugger giving himself up sacrificing the winning run the third day why is he going to get a reception for his sacrifice but something he's never accustomed to the way he's been swinging too bad I think Tony LaRussa felt he could hit the ball to right field but it's dead and it's so rare to see a cleanup hitter or a home run hitter putt they don't get called on to do it very often so to execute that the element of surprise and perfectly done great play and a conference on the mound giving the team what it needs third base with one out as Eric Fox cito Gaston and the Blue Jays bolt and the question is the Steinbach and Lansford the next two hitters dips to bordick so that you have a force at any base and that's what cito Gaston will discuss right now I would think you'd do that with one out just load them up especially with Steinbach and Lansford to the better clutch hitters not only on this team but in the league and take the chances of the play at every base you know it's interesting boarding who would be the batter has been the leading hitter this year he has a base hit on the season and he would be no easy out but to not experienced in postseason play like the other two guys 6 6 the score mark not only did he give himself up but that was about a textbook sacrifice as you'll see three sacrifice bunts before today in his entire career so the infield is in apparently they're going to pitch to Steinbach box the runner is at third base one out six six here in the bottom of the night we warn with for the Jane [Applause] I think you could walk up and down that Oakland bench and you would not find a player that would say that wouldn't say here's the guy we want at the plate to knock in the living room Terry Steinbach [Applause] field is in in the outfield is in as well ground ball right it here comes the throw to the plate and the play is in time and Fox's tag down so Fox was running on the pitch the ball was hit right at Roberto Alomar and borders blocked the plate effectively and unappealed his choice foxes out at home for out number two and Steinbach is the base runner in the 8th miss an opportunity gutsy decision by guests and said I'll go ahead Steinbach and he hits it right to Alomar contact play is on so the A's are going to force Toronto to make the play the throw is accurate nine time ball borders has to do is hang on to it and that's why durwood Merill had to wait for the call so there are two down and the years Lansford the infield has moved back groundball to Griffin Hill go to second for the force and we're going to go to extra innings as the A's had a runner and in a score who went into pinch run he wound up in third and you said the contact play he went to Silva's balloon batter made contact situations like that forced the opposition to make a play maybe they'll throw it away drop the ball as Tony LaRussa says you have to push you try to force the action and they tried to force it there Alfredo Griffin coming up for the first time today he went in to replace Manuel Lee after ed Sprague pinch-hit for Lee in the eighth inning this is his first at-bat of the series 171 career postseason average but a important man for the Blue Jays to have around he was don't like to use the word cheerleader but he was a great team man and a supporter all season long although he did not play them whereas the bumpkin takes ball one in fact when Lee was out with his knee injury for a while Griffin did get a chance to perform but he is a veteran of many seasons they're almost as a Parral coach - me of the great gray Nitschke when he joined the Green Bay Packers to do that Lansford looking to come in for a possible but basketball taken for a strike there's Kearny now field is shallow and around to the left on Griffin there's the budget he pushes it we're coming in Griffen wanted to push a pass Lansford in which case he would have been safe on an infield hit but Carney was alert to that you're a giant fan right how about Batio Lou wasn't this his stroke Lansford close to the line if he can get it just another five or six feet over and make poor dick feel that then Griffin's gotta face it come on white coming up for the sixth time today he singled and advanced a third on an era by Ricky Henderson in left field and came around on a Lamar's two-run homer that tied it in the top of the ninth inning first pitches low ball one and right now with the sports hide six six and in the tenth you have to say that the Blue Jays relief pitching situation is in lot better shape than the A's Tom Henke is in the bullpen he hasn't been used Dennis Eckersley already good quality a pinky is on call if the Blue Jays score a run go get ready in a hurry if it stays the way it is at war we'll go out there again at all probability talk about last year's World Series with Atlanta in Minnesota and those close exciting games I mean can these two any two teams put on a better show that these two teams in the first four games and evasive to the opposite field by Devon white his second hit as many innings he takes the big turn and good speed on the base pass now and coming up is Roberto Alomar and it was in the ninth inning last inning with white aboard on a chair when Alomar hit a home run over the right-field fence to tie the game at six six this after the A's had led six to one while they walked George Brett with the bases loaded one time in his career wonder if they're thinking about walk I mean this guy they can't get him out war hits today to singles a double and a home run seven hits in the series or he has feasted in the postseason in the last two years talk about a an all-star who rises to the occasion in the big game I wonder if white will stay put at first base because we steal second their walk out their chances on Carter so a stolen base right now would take the bat out of their hottest hitters hands so they may just keep Devon white right where he's at one ball and no strikes to count six-six top of the 10th white holds his ground he has been thrown out twice trying to steal in this series and a great percentage during the regular year horsies bass ball is in for the strike to Alomar one in one we're in the 10th inning of game number four of the American League Championship Series Lou Jays leading two games to one and for a while it looked like the A's were gonna sail into Game five tying this one up first-base safe [Music] [Applause] time but there are two down here but I didn't fool them but they finally got him to hit it and somebody and Mike bordick was just a little short jump white alertly back to first base now he becomes a stolen base threat with two down we said he'd been thrown out twice so far in the series but in the regular season was successful on 30 70 41 attempts with a single Enoch dinner on it was his first RBI of this series [Applause] Kelly Downs is beginning to throw in the bullpen [Applause] Lansford a couple of steps off the third-base line [Applause] like one makes sense for a couple of reasons plants for being on the line eliminate the double and Joe Carter has hit a ton of baseballs right now in that direction either just fair or just foul pitch a broken bat looper and Alleppey his second wife Tennyson almost daring Devon to go to third base gets the ball in second hit of the game for Carter broke his bat and now the Blue Jays have runners at first and second and two outs for Dave Winfield [Music] and Tony LaRussa out to the mound he has Kelly downs he's used Welsh carrot Eckersley who gave up five hits and downs is going to get the call and we'll return to Oakland Coliseum after this message and a word from your local station Tony LaRussa's trying to press the right button find the right reliever and now he hopes it's the veteran Kelly downs who was released by the Giants and came across the bay and helped out the A's as a starter and then a reliever he scored one inning yesterday gave up two runs on two hits and frankly we can't say the expression he used about his performance a he wasn't happy with it either was Jeff Russell and the reason Downes is in the game I mean Jeff Russell wanted to pitch today but Tony LaRussa said with his elbow I avoid using him back-to-back days he was wild yesterday and he's unavailable today or he'd be the guy in in this situation fact he'd probably have been in instead of coursing so he mentioned earlier Toronto with a big edge in the bullpen situation right now well coming up it'll be game number five of the National League Championship Series Braves and pirates as the Pirates try to ward off elimination 8:30 Eastern Steve Avery who already has won a game for the Braves in the series and Bob walk making his first start for the buck old way don't you think the guy in the batter's box isn't relishing this moment right it's what he's been looking forward to 20 years in the game miseries in postseason one four five today but hitless lifetime against down runners at first and second and two out here in the 10th white is a second and Carter to honor it Blue Jays scored three in the eighth two in the ninth to tie it up two run homer by Alomar and the A's had a runner at third with one out in the bottom of the ninth and did not score I in play and chasing prey catches my quarter as he runs up against the barrier Mike bordick with a terrific play to win [Applause] [Music] [Applause] further than bordick and crashes against the wall the defensive play of the series thus far even though it was a foul ball who knows what wind field would have done with all the foul territory guys like Mike bordick Carney Lansford used to running after foul balls like this what great concentration running over the mound keep your eye on the ball and then give up your body Wow I mean it is football today on Sunday and bordick what a catch and the do reaction by Kelly downs big play by bordick and wouldn't you know bordick will be the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 10th inning in Dave Winfield who body English right there now that didn't stay in it stayed in and he got it Dave so it's the bottom of the 10th inning and Duane Ward will be facing bordick Lance Blankenship in the top of the order and Rickey Henderson still shaking his head and muttering to himself over that cat spy Mike bordick and I'll tell you what in this game [Music] you've seen everything you wanted to see in an outstanding baseball game that means something in this series I mean it's at a point right now even though there appears to be a little dejection on that bench if they could rescue this game after a bad outing by their ace closer big lifts for that man and with the comeback it'd be the first time Toronto has ever done this to come back and win a game like this want to move remind you that tomorrow we'll be with you for Game five of the series three o'clock Eastern Time : against Stuart and a hand for my quartic as he comes to the plate [Applause] the 229 career average and hit 300 this year replacing wall twice extort stop lightly regarded who was undrafted he played college ball for the Maine black bears and was slated to replace Mike guy a go at second ended up playing super bad second and swings at the first pitch and lifts a pop fly Alomar wants it and holds on to it for the first out nothing out that direction is going to be easy you see Alomar juggle that ball just for a moment right now at 506 out here in the West Coast right field and right center field very difficult for the outfielders [Applause] there's Derek Bell and right-field who has to handle that bright sunshine see that's how he's playing it not only with the sunglasses but the glove rank one the Lance Blankenship we've been aboard three times today clean ward the fourth pitcher of the day for the Blue Jays Longwood Hankey making up perhaps the best one-two closing in the game one ball and one strike war isn't it will you look at Kelly Gruber all the Gruber at third base we should make the play and there are two gone in the bottom of the 10th inning he said yesterday's game was like the toughest fight you've ever been in to see who can stand up or get up at the end well he thinks yesterday's game was like that I wonder what he'll say after today's game yesterday's game was a puffball compared to this one [Music] there's Rickey Henderson three singles today in an RBI he is also stolen abate [Applause] I'm going to look at that left knee after the game he aggravated it on a defensive play in the field earlier Wayne Ward facing Rickey Henderson with two down nobody on here in the 10th tied six-six [Music] a lot more assured and effective today than he was yesterday since Lord came in to start the ninth inning he has thrown 14 pitches 13 of them strikes tuned to the game right down there hoping he gets a chance to pitch in the bottom of the 11th [Music] battled the Sun to make the catch and a 1-2-3 inning for Duane ward we now move to the 11th inning tied sixes how about this no team has ever overcome a five-run deficit after seven innings to win in postseason history and that includes World Series play we go to the 11th inning tied six-six and a chance for my partner Jim kaat who had some voice problems the other day to really get into it with an inning gave out a little dinner for why and let's go three or four more I mean you can't beat the drama and we talk about all the trends and they don't come true accuracy never blows a lead he does Toronto doesn't come back after they do so what a great series what a great game and no one has left the Oakland Coliseum 47,000 Plus on hand and the pivotal game the Blue Jays looking to take a three to one lead and win their second in a row on the road here and they've got David Cone gone tomorrow the A's on the other hand if they can gain a triumph we'll tie it up as Stewart opposes Cone tomorrow but these really appear to be too evenly matched teams who are going out at full tilt from the first pitch of the first game not only evenly matched maybe Toronto with a bit of an edge in starting pitching but Oakland has pitched well but also on the insides of these guys I mean Toronto has shown more courage in heart than any Toronto team we've talked about in the past and Oakland showing the same thing that's what helped him win the West Derrick Bell is making his first career postseason at-bat rookie hit 242 this year in 161 at-bats Bell was the Phenom during spring training was supposed to be a big smash position for the club suffered a broken wrist the first week of the year that kind of did it in the rest of the season takes ball one inside Oakland kid relate to that'll put fans if his Jose Canseco will growth that Hammond foam that pull him down and a fatty part of the hand and that's what happened to Derek Bell and put him on the disabled list le down [Music] finished up in the tenth inning by getting winfield bordick made a sensational catch in foul territory with two runners on base two balls in one strike to Derek Bell I'm sure it's the farthest thing from his mind because of the nerves inside his first postseason at-bat but if he could push a bunt with his speed towards second base right now in with the Blue Jays in a great position to score a run all kinds of rumors maril say that's a ball leading off followed by Maldonado and Gruber here in the 11th inning we into and this game has gone over four hours now Lansford is deep and guarding the line Belle who went into pinch run for olerude they got a big batch these dude out of the ballgame olerude had four hits including a home run and two runs batted in today [Music] bat out of the lineup and the Compton Bell remains three and two Toronto has given up a lot of fine young outfielders Marc Whitten Glen Allen Hill pedro muñoz junior Felix but here's a guy they've hung on to [Music] strikes and a foul off to the right so bell breaks his bat and we'll get a new stick Kelly downs San Francisco Giants and of course the news Lesley Visser told us that splashed across the front pages today in the examiner that George Shinn the prospective buyer for the Giants has decided to pull out now how many other opportunities they'll have to prevent the team from moving to Tampa st. Petersburg in the guys down to Florida been pretty patient I think in recent weeks while they've tried to find a buyer here in the Bay Area they got a little handsy for a while but I think they're pretty confident today there's a 3-mile back best swing he's at fouled straight back you figured first at bat swing it a few bad pitches but you see the deep breasts and maybe a little more relaxed and comfortable right now this will be the ninth pitch in this battle or I'll kelly down bell draws a walk to start the 11th inning he's got good speed deli downs walks the leadoff batter and candy maldonado coming up see Bob bailor whispering to Derrick Bell and the thoughts going through managers Minds right now okay do you bunt maldonado if you do they probably walk Gruber you get down to the bottom of the lineup and as productive as Maldonado has been and a veteran hitter I think Gaston will probably say take a shot to right field swim away Lansford is in at third McGwire getting set to charge in case there's a sacrifice attempt although the second baseman Blankenship is shaded over towards second so a pretty good bunker real estate for Maldonado on the right side of the infield and a quick switch of the side by rich hacker called candy back out of the box though the potential lead run is on at first base with nobody out here in the 11th [Music] time is called all that delay is the signs that Tony LaRussa is flashing to Terry Steinbach interesting duel between pitcher and batter downs and Maldonado former teammates with the San Francisco Giants Tom Henke would be ready if the Blue Jays take a lead you just lightly tossing in the Toronto bullpen Maldonado hits a blood drive to right field Ruben Sierra has the both dropped in front of him just fair Derrick Bell will go to third base and Maldonado is on at first with a single Sierra not sure whether the Sun affected him the ball dropped just fear down the right-field line in any event it's a single and now the go-ahead or the lead Ron is at third base with nobody out here in the 11th inning for what a series candy Maldonado is having here's a situation he's delivered the home run the RBI and his goal here hit the ball to right field and advanced the runner he not only does that but gets a hit the I doubt if Sierra could have caught that ball even if he did get a jump the Sun bother him but it just dropped in on the line this is what he's fighting off as you see that fly ball come out to right field this is what Roberto herb Ruben Sierra will be looking at and right off the end of the bat squirting toward the right-field line no chance to catch it and an excellent chance for the Jays to score and the infield is in for the A's to cut off the lead run runners at first and third none out Kelly Gruber just looking to make contact here to drive home the lead one first pitch from down ball one inside no team has ever come from behind trailing by five runs after the seventh inning in postseason history in the Blue Jays on the brink of doing just that nobody out runners at first and third in a 6 6 game one and O pitch to Gruber and there's a line save go on [Applause] just like uber was trying to do and he thought he had it to her McGuire don't caught the ball and then took a real deep breath say man I thought that was in there for a hit good reaction by Melvin I don't have to get trapped off one out the infield still playing in but they can soften up a bit for a ground ball possible double play with Pat borders coming to the plate borders today is 1 for 5 they sit was in the seventh inning don't think Tony LaRussa will take that chance with the soft grass at getting a double play he's going to bring him in try to Neil Bell at home [Music] 6/6 17 hits for two [Music] got around on that one strike one to pass borders 17 hits for the Blue Jays 11 for the A's we've got 28 hits and six errors in this game number four Toronto leading two games to one looking to take a commanding three to one advantage one out one strike to border [Applause] a line drive to left field Henderson makes the catch tagging up his bail the throws not cut off and the run scores and the Blue Jays have taken a 7 to 6 lead what a comeback cradling going into the m62 one and one here in the 10th 11th inning borders delivers as Ricki catches it in Bell takes off they're concerned about the lead run and they get it Maldonado held his ground he could easily be in scoring position but that's the one they want Alfredo Griffin with two down and the winner at first ball one the blue jay is leading 7 to 6 they took a one to nothing lead way back in the second inning on an olerude home run the A's then scored five in the third at a 6-1 lead in Toronto has made a historical comeback in this game if they can hold it foul back 1 & 1 the count no one has left but this crowd is deadly silent right now they're going through as the players are in the Oakland bench Oakland fans they've never seen this happen five-run lead with that bullpen now on a play stayed on first base with that throw coming to the plate and you knew it was going to the plate well I think what Bob bailor created the safe sign you don't want to get doubled off before bail scores but letting that throw goal if it means anything he could have gotten into second base rather easily Toronto just did not want to take any chance to the bottom of the 11th inning Willie Wilson Ruben Sierra and Eric Fox are the scheduled hitters for the A's Blue Jays in front 7 to 6 a remarkable comeback for them as Griffin fouls it off again 1 & 2 even the pitcher might need a pair of sunglasses about this time of the evening [Music] Griffen lines one down the left-field line just foul Maldonado would have scored how that ball stayed fair when you mentioned the upcoming hitters that run could be of some importance to Toronto because Ruben Sierra against Hinkey is a is a pretty good matchup for Oakland and a guy that can tie the game with a long ball mark mcgwire would be the fourth man to come up if someone could reach base for the A's in the bottom of the 11th inning but the Toronto Blue Jays showing amazing perseverance today they did not curl up into a corner and let the scheme play out when the A's had a six to one lead they fought back and they knew that Welsh could be gotten to but they also knew that Dennis Eckersley would loom in the game but Eckersley gave up five hits in an inning into third do it too now Sedo looking at those lineup cards probably saying who are the starting pitchers in this game yeah about four and a half hours ago nine pitchers have seen action today 2-out Maldonado the runner and a looper in the left field Henderson was playing shallow enough to make the catch to retire the side but a bigger honor crosses the plate on borders sacrifice fly in his 76 and will return to Oakland Coliseum after this message from your local station [Applause] dick Stockton and Jim kaat here at Oakland Coliseum in a marathon the bottom of the 11th the Toronto Blue Jays who were trailing 6-1 going into the 8th and they have their share of fans here at the Coliseum nothing everybody's got one now from Atlanta to Pittsburgh yeah those are you cha know ya those are the ones and they are three outs away from a big three to one advantage in this series Jack Morris long time ago started this game and was replaced in the fourth inning hot stottlemyre came on then Timlin for one inning Duane Ward for two and now Tom Henke will come in to make up what he hopes will be the second save of the series he saved game number two but keep in mind that during the year here at Oakland he blew two saves in a regular year but he's here to face Wilson Sierra at Fox [Music] bluejay wives and fans jumping up and down the emotion of the one round lead but down on the field as a player you immediately get back to business guard the line go to the right base Willie Wilson has had a good series thus far takes ball 1 up high third baseman Gruber is playing in at third and Joe Carter is playing deep and close to the line at first [Music] live all the left field should be handled by Maldonado and he makes the catch for out number one Ali is it out of the last two hours Toronto Blue Jays lost the opening game of this series in heartbreaking fashion on a home run on a night veins but they came back when they didn't hang one the last two and leading here after a tremendous comeback seven to six Ruben Sierra who has three extra-base hits in the series including a double and two RBIs today the batter it's as low wanna know there you see Derek Bell still fighting that Sun which is still out in right right centerfield and centerfield [Music] reminiscent of that great playoff game in 1978 when Lou Pinella had to fight the son off in Fenway Park and make a great play that's what Derek Bell is looking at right here the Mon widened centerfield faces the same problem here's the one one Anki is a Hennessy arrow frustration by Ciara hook on him bust him off the plate throw fast balls outside trying to keep him from pulling the ball in this situation and hinky stuck it right on the corner coming into the series they talked about Eckersley as the top reliever but the Blue Jays with the depth for the closers in warden hanky and we're seeing it here they sit in the left centerfield and Ruben Sierra takes the big turn and the A's have the tying run pudding [Applause] the air is second hit of the ball game and Eric box is coming up Eric Fox for the second time in his career is going to get a chance to be a hero that's right he's only had one to hit in the late innings to win a ballgame [Applause] [Music] on deck is mark mcgwire [Applause] so a chance for Eric Fox 29 years old a rookie at 29 had knocked around the miners since 1986 as an opportunity here with one out and one on against hinky with his team trailing by Iran [Applause] close waterline pitch misses want to know that opportunity was against Rick Aguilera of Minnesota he got an inside fastball and jerked it down the line for a three-run homer days were trailing the twins for the two and one out of them at the metrodome when fox it is three run homer and Hickey has other ideas soft toss over the first-base why're measuring Henke and the on-deck circle [Applause] seven to six the Blue Jays in front [Applause] down the middle one one in one the balance in the bottom of the [Music] [Applause] [Music] in the bullpen in case this game moves along to the 12th and time called is Ciara asked to tie a shoelace that is a very good idea to do if you're on the dismiss if you want to score the tying run Adam laced up there's Bobby Witt who came over along with Ruben Sierra and Jeff Russell from the Texas Rangers in the Jose Canseco [Applause] foxy arrow the baserunner [Applause] he has not been taking a big lead over here everyone gets a little cautious in these situations you could see hiki just toss it over to first you don't want to make that stupid error mistake don't want to lose your aggressiveness [Music] tentative drive to centerfield Devon white is there he has it for the second out Fox's retired now mark mcgwire comes into the batter's box [Applause] a sacrifice bunt though it did not score run was a big maneuver for the A's in the night thing [Applause] box was out on a fielder's choice [Applause] [Music] by Steinbach where the A's now with the Blue Jays one out away from their third win of the series it's hinky against Maguire [Applause] [Music] the pitch he wanted a hit and fouled it straight back doesn't it always come down to the best reliever against a guy who can end the game of copper hitter strength the strength good fastball and he had a great swing at two home runs against Hank eva 2 for 18 [Applause] that's successful [Applause] with two down and a ground so hanky is in charge here with the count no balls and two strikes so one in the series and has come close on four other occasions to hitting one out he is just miss set alone trying to get his second save of this area [Applause] and a pop up [Music] play remains oh and two pinkey not only picked up the save and game to pick one up yes [Applause] his third straight say that he can dispose of bark Maguire [Music] that's to do it forward as Devon white and he makes the catch and a historic come-from-behind win by the Blue Jays who are now one away from being the first Canadian team to make it to the World Series seven to six the final score as Henke gets his third straight save an amazing comeback and those are the totals Blue Jays lead the A's three games to one and the Chevrolet player of the game is Roberto Alomar he tied it with the two-run homer in the he had four hits in Chevrolet will donate $1000 in his behalf to the Special Olympics so far Jim Cott and Lesley Visser I'm dick Stockton saying so long from Oakland Coliseum the final score the j7 the a6 the presidential debate will be seen in its entirety on the CBS news overnight broadcast up-to-the-minute [Applause] [Music] you
