1995 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Mountain Dew Southern 500 At Darlington Raceway

from here 1965 and as far back as when the first 500-mile stock-car race was ever run here at Darlington they were found we can expect that kind of action every time we come here and it all started last week the Bristol the crashing began early and continued right to the checkered flag when Dale Earnhardt hit Terry Labonte sending him sideways and into the wall he nursed his battered car to Victory Lane a shoving and shouting match after the race between Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace had its roots much earlier in the evening with this incident off turn four and the fer Beach continues that boy can talk to me if he wants to I got a lot of racing to do in the heat of the deal he was upset and I write we look Riley so you know and but still I can't get my water bottles either hey if I can do what I want to do buddy they'd all read about it because I'm not taking a gram that kid I'm gonna race hard I'm not gonna wreck cuz they won't let me the racer that he is and I feel like that I am that we'll both get over it and get through it yeah I got hot my tempers flared and all that we had a little talk yesterday I think we see eye to eye a lot better now and you know he sees a great friend of mine I told them yesterday I know the fans gonna think I'm totally nuts and everybody listens they think I'm crazy but I I love the guy like a brother and so the stage is set for yet another round in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series for 1995 it is the 23rd race of the year and we take a look at the point standings showing that Jeff Gordon is on the top of the list 176 behind is Sterling Marlin all the way down to fifth the separation of 391 Ted Musgrave of course in the fifth position I'm Bob Jenkins and it is great to be here at Darlington we have a beautiful day here going for us with thousands of fans gathered for this race here the traditional Labor Day Mountain Dew southern 500 we are very glad to be here with simulcast coverage with in-car coverage on the deuce and of course our regular coverage here on ESPN and Carl we are very very happy to be a part today of race day America well Bob thanks very much and we're very happy to be a part of racing across the country race day America here on this Labor Day weekend we will be here throughout to bring you what goes on the only group of guys not racing the f1 formula guys but everywhere else we've got you covered coming up on race day America here will that guy Jacques vill do of the Polster to wrap up the indy points race in vancouver not up the defending champ has anything to say about it little al focuses on his longshot we'll throw in a monster dose of NHRA action and you get dashes you get crashes you get spins and you get wins it's race day America on both ESPN and espn2 on ESPN the nascar shoptalk featuring Jeff Gordon at 7:00 it is the NFL primetime show most in-depth recaps of the games of Sunday Night Baseball Kansas City in Texas on espn2 at 4:30 the drag racing challenge then the Vancouver Molson Indy car in-car simulcast and don't forget our p.m. tonight with Kenny may now time to get you back to Darlington and Bob dead Bob sounds like a lot of fun no reason to go anywhere else this is a big race it's always a pivotal race in the championship because so many things can happen here the track can come up and bite you at any time but before we write the checks for the championship in December dr. Jerry punch we may be riding a $100,000 check to one of three drivers going for that here this afternoon you're exactly right Bob there are four crown jewels in NASCAR Winston Cup car racing the biggest race of the year that I told a 500 won by Sterling Marlin hey the fastest event of the year at Talladega was won by Mark Martin and the longest race of the year won by this guy beside me the world 600 is Charlotte Bobby Labonte now if one of those three drivers can win the fourth crown jewel here the oldest race of the year the southern 500 able to take home in addition to the purse of over 1.1 million dollars they will take home a $100,000 bonus today at Darlington what a great day could be for these three guys but there's hey there's 13 of the guys here in the field who would like to get their share a lion's share of that purse talk about someone who has won a big bonus here in the past while John Kernan is standing near him well it was ten years ago this race that Bill Elliott captured the Winston million but for today he's starting further back in the pack on Friday during practice Bill had one of the fastest cars in the garage area but during qualifying he almost lost it almost hit the wall as a result of slow lap so it was back to second round qualifying on Saturday as a result bill will start 24th that places him on the backstretch pits but hey I'm telling you what guys don't count Elliott and his crew out Elliott has won five times here at Darlington not only the Winston million bonus but he also won this race last year to end a 56 race winless streak now you may be surprised in the bill is starting in the 24th spot but I'm sure you're very surprised at the pole sitter and that's who Bill Weber is standing there well John it's surprising when you hear drivers say well I don't care where I qualify because I've got 500 miles to get to the front but that's not the case here at Darlington they've run 86 Winston Cup events here 76 times 90% the winner has come from inside the top ten one out of every five races the winner has come from the pole on the pole here today young John Andretti his first ever Winston Cup pole he's been coached by veteran crew chief Tim brewer who has seven wins at this track to race the track and watch the competition you must race the track here because if you don't you will lose now Andretti qualified for that Dover earlier this year on the second lap his car slid out from underneath him igniting a multi-car crash that took out about 20 cars they're hoping that doesn't happen today this team's looking for a strong a swift but most importantly a safe start to another history-making southern 500 now let's go up top Danette Jarrett and Betty Parsons well thank you very much Bill Weber folks have you figured out this is a tough racetrack and then if Jeff Gordon's gonna win the championship this is a race he really needs to get through yeah he really does need to get through here and you know I'm sure that he'll exercise a lot of patience out here today but sometimes that doesn't get it done because this track as we've said can't jump up and get you at any time and Jeff hasn't had too good of a record here at this racetrack he's had overheating problems he's been in the wrong place at the wrong time and this crash so he's had just a little bit of everything to go wrong and this is one race we keep talking about Bristol last week in Darlington Jeff Gordon the figures due today we might be looking at the 1995 Winston Cup champion [Applause] now let's go down to the command to start engines green flag here in a couple of laps Darlington Raceway is one point three six six miles in length the front stretch and the back stretch are both 1228 feet there's a little bit of difference in the banking in one and two they're banked at 25 degrees 3 & 4 are banked at 23 degrees looks pretty simple right the pole speed 167 379 by John Andretti the race record is one 37.9 they'll be pitting between clamps 58 and 68 somewhere in that window and of course the purse exceeds more than 1 million dollars Wow dad they used to race for about a hundred thousand what you were running to do that's right yep under 65 race and got twenty-two thousand dollars which was big the 46th annual Mountain News southern 500 line up looks like this John Andretti in the Kmart Little Caesars Ford on the pole and Ricky Rudd in the tide Ford alongside and his very first pole in his career and as a matter of fact he ran something like 50 some IndyCar races never had a pole his first of course in stock car racing third row is Jeff Gordon of course the points leader but Sterling Marlin has lined up right beside him the third row those two first and second in points great run for legs bean and also Ward Burt row five we find JetBlue dine and Hut Stricklin back in the sixth row its Jimmy Spencer Dale Jarrett has lined up on the outside of row number six there goes the field off of corner number two down the backstretch once again as you take a look at the rest of the starting lineup then you see the pace car that they're leaving the top first 20 cars there's another base car leaving the second 20 cars now it's when the drivers adjusts their tachometers to pit road speed looking now at the second 20 you saw Rusty Wallace they're lined up in 21st Bill Elliott who won this race last year is in the 12th row Jeff Burton announced his new deal for next year this week Jimmy Mayfield has been running so good yearly a lot of good cars pitting on the backstretch and the Morgan Shepherd had to go to the rear of the field that's what mr. prospers how about that it's not a good way to start this long grueling event the back row but there is the 21 cent go forward lined up at the back look at Mark Martin all the way back in the eighteenth row for the start of this race here are the nineteenth row occupants Todd Bodine and Ken Schrader and now we get back to those who had to take Provisionals to get in the field including Rick mast Kyle Petty and the last row consists of rich Bickle and Ed barrier in his first NASCAR Winston Cup race well we got all kinds of in cars of course there in the early going of the racers a lot [Music] makes it very slippery [Music] control the car through the first and second terms as the dirty wet car breaks sex makes a move on Darrell Waltrip and Rusty Wallace [Music] [Applause] at this racetrack five different occasions rush Darrell Waltrip is one of those drivers that will exercise but impatience he's not gonna fight in my real hard right now black Jim boards trying to fight Dick Trickle for the good fight do it there [Music] ready they literally want to throw phil's both these engines from 210 and 37 car once again jab backcourt looking for the inside [Music] made no attempt now we have they learn art pulling to the inside behind john andretti as the rest of the field moves through [Music] forth turns its ricky rudd showing the way within 20 seconds and Earnhardt Riggleman [Music] [Music] 240 car of rich bickle and the perspective from the room here's Dave Marcus Jeremy Mayfield as Jeff Burton along with Bill Elliott Marcus in the yellow number 71 Mayfield in the red number 98 and the number 8 car of course is Jeff Burton he announces leak that he'd be driving a third Chad rouse car this week [Music] Marcus traitor but we made not see very much mention look like anybody suffered a great deal of damage except perhaps for Ken Schrader's whose left rear is pretty well banged up Dixie straw to put gas to the back of that car and he's shredding a tire as he comes down the straightaway and muttering the bodywork off just turn the ride record off the car if he didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all here comes the field down slowly they're coming down slowly simply because there's a tremendous amount of debris here on the front stretch where that right rear corner panel of Ken Schrader was disintegrated as the tire blew I never see the debris lay it on the frustration let's watch the replay and see what happens during cold met Mike Wallace try to go through the corner side-by-side coke spins the mane and tail car and their Schrader comes in spins back some chocolate on barreling up by and straighter makes contact with the wall and will see Mark Martin just getting through I think the 29 car ran in the back of someone and looked like Loy Allen ran into the back of someone also here's another angle well Ted Musgrave goes by Mike Wallace in the 90 car and derrike cope tried to follow him through and got a little bit loose spins around here comes trader spinning around and then everybody else jamming up back there trying to get slowed down so they'll know which direction to go and it looks like Morgan Shepherd got tapped there by employee Allen Loy Allen the car number 19 so Shriners car is pretty well beat up as he came around turn number four on the straightaway watched the tear and tire shred and tear off the bodywork this is just a trip watch this quarter pounders rip off that is incredible now from Morgan Shepherds roof cam will see how it occurred [Music] [Music] we heard the tires on Morgan's car's ass weekend that's when he probably got hit in the back by Loy Allen so it was a it looked like Todd Bodine ran in the back operator and caused him to spin that's correct eight laps have been completed we are under caution a multi-car tangle up in turn number three has damaged the car of Ken Schrader and others with blood waiting in a moment welcome to Darlington Raceway in South Carolina we just began the southern 500 here on race day America we had a crash up and turn number three and we'll take a look at what happened from Mark Martin's camp [Music] and from law Alan's perspective for now or now Sam I am I [Music] I hate aboard [Music] there's the driver questioning the spotter chef instructions here it is once again that's derrike cope getting sideways todd bodine hits ken Schrader in the back sending him up the banking and then everybody on the brakes and Lauren's right there certainly nowhere to go up by that time here's Bill Weber with a 25 car well Ken Schrader's on his way back in again this will be his fourth stop he's got a real long day ahead of him heavy sheet metal damage to the rear of the car they've torn away the rear wing they put up a ton of racing came on here they banged away with a sledge hammer they be able to fuel the car this is the first time they've tried to put gas back in and so Ken Schrader's day will be Walgett hot here at Darlington also went back here Morgan shepherd's minute he's got severe sheet metal damage Garrett cofidis top boy Allen and barriers been in twice the 75 car trouble man has been in the hood has been up on that Steve Grissom is stopped for fuel that's what's going on on the backstretch let's go forward to Jerry punch well for the second week in row we're getting seeing someone get it to the face with water what happened to Ricky Rudd a moment ago was when he got in the car to start the race they had a cool box behind his scene with the hose to run to his helmet well they had condensation in the hose he hoped the hose whose helmet we took the green flag he flipped the fan on as the cool air into his helmet at blue water it filled his helmet with ice-cold water going into turn one on the green flag clap you thought about a surprise for Ricky Rudd it's a wonder he held on the racecar he assists unhook the hose drained the water out onto the floorboard and rehook the hose back up but somewhat of a surprise not thriller labs will be trying to do that again it's quite a story all right we're set to go green once again how long a day is it going to be for Ken Schrader's riding around out there getting points they don't make prisoners do that I mean run around there but just nothing the gating sitting a few points here's the green we're back to racing run and ready Earnhardt trickle Gordon Burt Ward Marlin and Lake speed up front back there behind lakes be good loves the quacker state car [Music] [Music] is already that he is back there but his maid Dick Trickle comes right up on the back bumper of Earnhardt just freeze we saw bales here get on the inside of Jeff Boyd on racetrack evidently Park it's not an invariable the 17 car of darrell waltrip by the way is going to the rear and here comes rich with about five more inside spotter letting him know that cars are passing there so shame [Music] mark mark a spot away try his best then get it on the inside off Darrell Walker and here comes morning [Music] one you feel there can go bad [Music] and piling earn artists alongside and ready takes over that second spot Nellis it hit run here's Gordon trying to get by Nick Tripp in some little mess-ups turn to his head Warburton he must be rookie the second half of this race to get the position back [Music] Pressley almost spot but saved it no it's Hut Stricklin I'm sorry bubble he man smoking I should they're spinning but they did Wow nice job I hug [Music] go for it boy this time of the race cuffs so far to go you don't want to get over anxious oh you're right and I'm just a little surprised at some of the moves that we've seen already here in the first 16 laps we've got 367 total reputation this place Kerry seems like drivers will be a little warm not so maybe they're still remembering crystal last Saturday night never seen no Ellen on the inside of bread bowtie trying to take that spot away try to bottle it and it's so closely the crew is so now when they get side by set I just hold my breath and here comes Dave Marcus he has a run going who push must break or I don't buy what I say pushing the crap Dave nice to pass here comes Bobby Hillin in the car number 77 once rent without going outside guess back in lad Mark Martin coated me [Music] mark marques car [Music] and here's Dale Jarrett taking the position away from trot Strickland then [Music] yes by half a car length Dale Earnhardt goes to the lead picks up the 500 points and we have the first lap never [Music] and for the fancy when you say pick up five bonus points and we have some fancy [Music] which the most laps also gets five bonus points the first five cars have separated themselves a little bit from sixth place Sterling Marlin does taught by Marv and ready trickle and Gordon here is Jimmy Spencer and Jeff bodean battling for position that's back there for about 12 and now you can say Presley though he just came into the picture Presley wanted rookie contenders this year second in points for Ricky Craven here comes from Rusty Wallace [Music] she's already moved up to 14 when he first starting position yes he was a second batches qualified John Kernan has to report what's the problem but Darrell Waltrip who has lost many positions John the mob the problem for Carol is the car has gotten just extremely loose he can hardly now this is a brand new car that they built to bring here [Music] a lot of changes since they got here you so lose Daryl's having problems just keeping it here's Presley now looking to the car of Jimmy Spencer just ahead as rusty comes up on both of them [Music] crispin tried to move around spencer how come you never got this excited when you were driving out there was driving it seemed to be set by the way Jeff Gordon tried his best to get by dead triples not successful we can see five or six car lengths in trying to do that it's been effects early Marlon has closed up right on the back bumper that's sterling in the yellow number four this is in-car camera looking right ahead and Jeff fort and ear indicators when it for an impressment finding its long side fastest car here in the practice on Friday but had a problem during qualifying and nearly wrecked in turn number two is trying to move up from the rear of the field nose to tail races they're trying to read round them it's only trade grounded that segment from Rick [Music] we can see the Spencer's car evidently very very loose because he lost three spots all three of those cars able to get by [Music] [Music] Claire head for the 94 [Music] nineteen car and here's Jeff Gordon still trying to get around thing trickle but he hasn't been able to do it [Music] just took that much is left by trick that's all he needs with just one little bit of a slip and I think what if we just easy perfect ready is gaining on Earnhardt it was a 1.3 second separation of new laps ago and now John Andretti has cut into that lead [Music] hard upfront within Gordon trickle and Marlin after 31 laps of the mountain to southern Milan [Music] it is race day America here on ESPN and happy Labor Day weekend to spring and March he was a master start here involved into this and that in turn one but Jeff Gordon did have the fastest car that's in barrier the 32 car there's a race coke and LG soccer that's the 31st position coke takes it away [Music] Gordon takes second from tailor so now it's Andretti's gone let's take here this afternoon would have chamois can 95 they don't necessarily have to win the race they just have to finish ahead before chevy finishes second thing still [Music] Jeff Gordon he is when it awfully hard he's right we'd like to do here pretty early in the race would be to go up there and take the lead and get those five bonus points we talked about earlier before you can pick up the better it is ricky'll and Marlin there you saw battling for more as we watch the field come through Ward Burton II MBNA karpati been able to about Ricky Rudd and the Roush drivers are running together on the racetrack Musgrave bend down and of course as betty indicated earlier martin takes has just about called John Andretti and Earnhardt stay right there with them Loy Allen was in baguettes for a while he lost three laughs now is gone another lap down on the racetrack 41st position [Music] that much behind and ready can't see where you're going now you see this a racetrack directed fun [Music] and the longer they run all these powers the hotter they get the slicker the racetrack gets and that corner I heard them those cars on the track 2:26 moved to 24th position by the 16th lap and there you can see how he currently make that in 14th position as inside of Bobby Labonte and takes so Burton from 2016 14 in the first 44 laps we believe however those up front including Andretti now Rusty Wallace goes to the inside of Bobby Labonte takes a look [Music] we understand the 40 car rich level is smoking smoking here comes Morgan Shepherd into the picture Morgan astir bikal is 29 [Music] like the fingers rub in there and then the life be retired driven the quarter panel its life should be more concerned about there he's not [Music] all on his windshield well they they can feel reasonably comfortable your top three and red experts up here at the booth of that success here at Darlington both on this racetrack here is Dale Jarrett to take that fit position away from Dick Trickle thank you by the way Steve Grissom just pulled a Monica car in the pit hits on the back straightaway as slow as he did that Garret started in 12th position and this Ben clock oven him for some reason but he's been faster than the leaders to last time absent in position now is Dale Earnhardt as he was able to pass Jeff Gordon this is how it happened down the front straightaway he gets alongside goes inside and Gordon just backs off like she's going her heart takes that spot away I would guess that Earnhardt he started to run this little bit I see [Music] before he's found a pathway and while you take a look at the top five will tell you the rich bickle has been like it's race to America on ESPN [Music] Raceway in South Carolina there's earlier John Andretti who's talking on the pole [Music] $16,200 in unocal bonus money right behind him is Danner that's Mike Wallace in the card number 94 36 and 37 position Wallace will go up [Music] inside now he comes up on clock not easily but I don't think there really isn't oh it Spencer but everything's okay they continue on and we'll watch Bernard as he tries to get by Mike Wallace they're in their 55th lap now so pit stops again laughs so all those folks up in Detroit at Kmart Little Caesars watching and saying wow our car is in front and the rest people on the other side of town watch that Goodwrench Chevrolet ricky rudd outside pole-sitter lost a lot spots where is he now position I mean the 13th position protected position from lake speed [Music] the backs right [Music] then started to go back [Music] his crew chief announced this week that he'll be leaving the Ricky Rudd team at the end of the year who wants to pursue a career in driving I remind you Kirk Shelburne a Navy spot for the same future but Billy drove some a few years ago it's run as one by Ricky Rudd not fighting but once they come up this car is not right it's just waiting for that first pit stop which won't be long in we said 58 to 68 right now we've been there on the 15th [Music] cherry watch this pit strategy getting off with a fuel mileage 70 laps but it won't be a calculator that's going to determine when a dreaded hits it'll be the stopwatch that Tim brewer is using here on pit road Brewer set that les John begins to really fall off his lap time which could be as early as lap 16 it's just a couple laps away that's what I'll make the call and bring John down pit row to see a dirty bit sometimes about 60 and lap 64 that will be just a few laps from right now as both of those cars have moved we talked about and they'll cherish how many pulled off the race trackies headed towards pits on the back he's just gone a lap rubbing on a tire well that's no longer a problem because he got the right front fender knocked off when he tried to slow up and avoid that accident and in turn one he has been on pit road now twice they have been trying to peel some of the sheet metal away pry some of the front bumper bars away they've changed right-side tires go back at the pump now there - much on the mike he was the to Darlington in the fall it's always nice to anticipate who is going to be inducted into the nfpa Motorsports Hall of Fame and it was one of our own this year the site was the Darlington Country Club just down the street from the Speedway and the guest list read like a who's who in NASCAR stock car racing the occasion was the induction of former car owner Raymond parks and our own Betty Parsons into the National Motor Sports press Association Hall of Fame Ned did the intro thank you Steve so after he finished he was walking down in front of the grandstand on the racetrack and the fans started cheering and the closer he got to the start/finish line the louder they cheered he had one of those hands that back when he's doing the head of the week pipe deal and this one later looked over to her husband and said what's Willard Scott doing here ladies and gentlemen I present to you the ladies mr. Benny Parsons Benny next year I just sit there and walk down and sit with these guys herb Thomason ed and Tim and jr. a look at it here's Greg sacks on the inside of but they save it here comes boy l had a notion to come down there well yeah it does he comes on down there here there are three abreast going into that turn that doesn't work so they get together and a round they go that track closes up nowhere to go and four five six seven lots of race cars cutting bump and darrell waltrip got turn and hit the wall really [Music] and Mark Martin drives through another crash but Darryl's okay yeah oh yeah he's got that that down and he's climb another car and it's good to see that for the five-time winner here at only one among the lead group unlikely to come down pit road they had last pitted on lap 243 so about 20 laps ago he decided to come back in and change a tire and apparently Gordon now being told he radioed in and thought he might've had a tire going down from debris on the racetrack so apparently that is the case then nodding up and down to be that apparently had a tire going down I found out which one it was and get right back with you okay well there was a lot of debris without question up there in turn number one where we had that multi Kart angle so Jeff apparently ran over something [Music] [Music] we have three more events to televise for you after today on the 1995 NASCAR Winston Cup Series will be at North Wilkesboro at Martinsville and then the season finale with this title here's dr. punch I told you how we tell you what happened to Jeff Gordon indeed I'm going to take a look at the right rear tire a big gash in the outside of the right rear tire can you believe this guy the second time today he has dodged the bullet he has cut to right rear tires and still hadn't hit anything the consequence here this tire was on its way down in fact it almost completely flat time he got back to pit road let's go to John Kernan is standing by with Jeff Conine well Jess sitting on the back of his hauler and crewmen coming in busily it looks like a bunch of bees working in the hive trying to get the car the Exide batteries forward fix what happened Jeff with John really pretty pretty stupid we're a lap down and we're just trying to get out of the way a lead lap car let them race for the win here we been having some problems made an adjustment on that last stop and you know the xid bird was starting to run good by still I was letting those guys go so they can race and the 31 car got under me off of turn four and I guess Rick mast tried to go under him into turn one and that's three wide and that's impossible here at Darlington it's hard enough to go in there by yourself let alone three cars and I guess he hit it hit the 31 31 hit me and you told me 10 cars got in a wreck that's that's terrible that's ridiculous I don't Rick didn't do it on purpose but it's really pretty stupid we're just trying to finish this darn thing you know and that's what you have to do here when you're having a problem just kind of let the guys running for the win for the lead let them run and you just finish the race and here we sit this whole race car really discouraging but that's part of the racing and you know that's a big part of what happens here at Darlington but at this time of a race you would think maybe early in a race you see these kind of wrecks normally as the race goes on guys slow down a little bit get a little more patience but not today all right well it's good to see Jeff bodean is okay since sitting here relaxing waiting to see if they can get his car back out on the track Jeff pretty much accurately described exactly what happened in a let's take a look at it again again here on the front stretch yeah it's right on that's Greg sacks in the 31 car on the inside of Jeff bow down and here comes Rick mast down on the inside he almost clears them getting into the term maybe clips to the 31 car a little bit 31 gets up into the seven and then boy it breaks loose behind [Music] in all there were 10 cars involved in that accident let's take a look at who they were Marcus Saks Waltrip Geoff Bodine and Kyle Petty and then the other five were masked Burton Nemechek Hamilton and Presley so it is caution again here at Darlington with 274 laughs the leader of the race in the Kmart Little Caesars car but he's his engine is a man isn't it yeah it's been documented that he has a problem with that board maybe Morgan Shepherd and Bobby Labonte our Bobby Hillin Dick Trickle maybe an opportunity to get back up there and get in the lead lap I think Ricky Rudd has the best shot at it because Jeff Gordon is right there and he should be fast lays out inside the tide for the ricky rudd let's take a look at that sloppy Levani with the run off turn four that's the original past a few laps ago when Jeff Gordon took the lead now we're going to see I think be the accident between Bobby Labonte and Sterling mom here we are down the front straightaway sterling he's trying to protect the ground he doesn't want to lose position Bobby wants it they go in the corner they make contact right there then again and the 22 car gets a little bump from behind from the 26 and he goes round sterlin have some contact to the father car we've talked about how Jeff Gordon the points leader has dodged some bullets this afternoon and fortunately for second place of the point Sterling Marlin he does not dodge the bullet instead taste the concrete here at Darlington the 22 car made some contact with the 18 with the right front I don't know what kind of damaged it would be there but hope that isn't too severe and another angle [Music] that's another situation it could have been a lot more cars involved unfortunately everyone else got through and here's how Sterling Marlin saw it [Music] and now Rusty Wallace perspective [Music] they what they glare rustic ain't hard to see you think anything now that Claire is definitely becoming a problem with the drivers as they go down to turn number one here comes Sterling Marlin back in Terry Labonte is also back in Dale Jarrett also on pit road let's say they look like there's a lot of damage can this get close to the front of that Mike Noah from the roof cam it didn't appear as if he hit it very hard maybe a little bit they're working on it there we go yeah right front nothing real significant they need to close that gap between the grille in the hood I got a check under there trying to Jack Grissom and he has a passenger in that car does he get relief does it turn on what's going on back there ready now bill Davis tells me that there's no real damage to the car just got hit in the rear end but they changed four tires the last time in Ward went back out radioed in said hey we've got a bad vibration I'm gonna come back in I need four more tires so that's what they're doing right now this is the second time today got had a vibration but last time he had to run about 15 laps before there was the under the same caution so a good break for them with the three and we tied this pitstop along with say he's turn arts and Jeff boards and the three criminal split and they have a 22 second stop this morning they told me that it's going to how well they go and doing what I said okay I want to see a 1617 second pit stop from catfish it said 22 seconds you guys but Ward has managed to keep that car in the lead lap all day and is currently being shown in tenth position 289 the two abreast formation or the restart of the southern 500 the mountain dew southern 500 from Darlington the sellout crowd is still anticipating who might wet this thing here's the green and we'll settle it in about 67 there are 77 laps to go which means that there will be at least one more pit stop before this thing is over the rest of the way as far as but if my legs meet in the span car my body took the look down coming off turn two could not make it in the interstate battery star 37 car in the lead lap he also has his own car Bobby Hillin Dick Trickle still working hard on for [Music] - Wallace who's running seven that caution flag was a big break for Rusty Wallace whose crude although there's a crashes trickle swaggins into turn his car caution is out the rusty real quick that last set of tires they work a good set a good match that rusty the car was running terribly said they were lucky to have this caution period before this to change tires Dick Trickle brings out another caution here at Darlington he was running 13th when the accident occurred trying to get back and Bobby Hillin is trying to race for the penny will beat Gordon back to the line that puts the 13th car then on the lead lap been strong all day your house center under bear with our dark for a long long they've got 450 miles or so bidding 5510 power and hard to get back feet left but he's done it down now the only question is did he take the caution flag the lat proceeding is what I meant evidently not or the pace car would be else here's a replay there's triple he gets the car just a little bit too high he loses the backend and bam or the field bear down they all cut to the inside then he slips down in between a few up then they go to the outside he gets been there out the way here's Jerry with more on Dick Trickle unfortunately Dick Trickle is ready a tenant old bud more I think I may have cut a tire coming through three I felt it going down but didn't have time to get it and apparently yeah it cost them dearly it looks like they're gonna hold Bob Hill oh yeah he's not going to get his lap back evidently he took the caution flag the lamp reseeding knew and was not able to race back bill Weber has medical updates it was just over at the McDonald's rate bill Elliott's up front to the allowed charities very sore some of his crew men were telling me he probably won't be coming out for a you know they can maybe come in and make it the rest of the way on fuel somebody just might gamble here at the end of this deal we'll have to see [Music] Jerry boron that I just talked to Ray Evernham here in the Gordon pit and they've got a little bit of a quandary my calculations and Charlie seekers down here doing some calculating if they were to stop now they could make it the rest of the way on fuel but the question is do they want to stop and give up track position well apparently they just might have this Asian because here they come down pit road yes and I don't want to stop and get back there and all that track but I guess I'm going to come in let's check it up into Rusty Wallace pit with John Kernan Jerry as soon as everyone else decide to do it rusty Wallace's crew sprays an axe and it's just a gases looks like Ward Burton is taking on gas only back to Terry to change all four tires here at the Jeff Gordon pit right side tires going and Earnhardt is already on the rope in trouble Gordon were go ahead and take the time doing it so Papaji their last the cardia to the pit road here at Gordon Dowling away he actually broke this mirror or a spotter told him and Sterling Marlin trying to get in this fence told him that look Jeff all the rest of the leaders are pitting he doe on pit road behind Earnhardt in the 37 car of Andretti he's back was a leader in the race and was about fourth or fifth hose [Music] let's take a look at Jenny sword and he was the leader of the race so it was a last-minute decision for chef Gordon as he saw everybody else dive off then he be very short on fuel so I'll be in problem there a check was running at the 26th position about 23 laps down already in the Burger King Chevrolet it's our 11th caution of the afternoon it comes on lap 327 it's like he's know all those guys and needs a Dixie straw to put gas in with let's see if we can see what happened with our camera looks like she might ago a little help from somebody Brett
