9 - people cheer as much for cars as they do for drivers Detroit brought their specially built in safe cars to Darlington in 69 just as they have today and the track was hurting his reputation has too tough to tame the late Leroy a won twice at Darlington in 69 shapes have come full circle since then although hairstyles have changed and today's participant is a little more daring the class of 85 valedictorian was Darrell Waltrip Winston Cup champion although Bill Elliott was salutatorian what the 11 wins last year including two here at Darlington no one has come to the head of the 1986 class Geoff Bodine took his Jemmy to Daytona's victory lane then at Richmond for driver Kyle Petty drove through a crash late of the race to capture his first win at Rockingham Terry Labonte got GM back in the winning track when he outclassed the field in his local Biel and pans begin to wonder if all four GM makes could win a race at Atlanta Morgan Shepherd surprised many by raising his hand and saying yes to the question can a Buick win and then just last week Rusty Wallace ran away and hid from the field in his Pontiac making it five different winners and as many makes of cars for the class of 1986 [Music] you're number one auto racing Network pre 1086 [Music] [Music] we welcome you to the track too tough to tame Darlington International Raceway in South Carolina for the trans out 500 stop number six on the Winston Cup trail for 1986 good afternoon everybody I'm Bob Jenkins we have a beautiful day here in South Carolina with sunny skies temperatures in the upper 70s well NASCAR certainly has achieved parity in its racing in the first five races of this year five different winners and five different makes of cars in Victory Lane joining me in the broadcast booth for today's race will be Jack arute and really the story Jack goes beyond 1986 vadik says it goes all the way back to 1985 in the last 11 races run by NASCAR there have been 11 different drivers also remember the every conceivable make of car that is in competition in 1986 his court of victory and we're only going into the sixth stop on the circuit a Ford has visited Victory Lane in 1986 Kyle Petty drove one to victory at Richmond but the Fords have not been doing well here this weekend no they haven't now Ricky Rudd had qualified well he's up there in the eighth position but starting 21st 22nd and 23rd are the other Fords with guys like Bill Elliott Cale Yarborough and Kenny Schrader and they're scratching their heads they think it might be due to a rule change that came into play a couple of weeks ago involving spoilers in front air dam so we'll get into that a little more at beginning the telecast on the front row for today's race teammates on the pole Geoff Bodine alongside Tim Richmond let's get more on that story as we go to our third member of the broadcast crew for today's race working the pit area here is dick Berggren Bob both cars on the front row here are out of the rick hendrick stable and the hendrix table right now is one of the strongest in automobile racing in the United States last weekend for example with three different cars and three different divisions all on the same day Hendrick cars broke track records Geoff Bodine is starting on the pole here with the same car he used last weekend to break the track record at Bristol and he's broken the track record here at Darlington given that he's also the 1986 Daytona 500 winner Bodine is certainly a favorite but starting outside him is his teammate Tim Richmond Richmond hasn't won a race in the Winston Cup division since 1984 but he's got a solidified team of very strong car and a very positive attitude Richmond thinks he too can win but to win he must finish and this is one of the most demanding least forgiving race tracks on the circuit bud Thank You dick we have 40 cars and drivers lined up to take the green flag in the trance out 500 which is being brought to you by Dodge a performance revolution and American Revolution and by Goodyear Eagle you either have Goodyear Eagles or you need them and by bush beer the beer where the taste says smooth as its name settle back in your easy chair we have about four to half hours of racing and we'll be back in just a moment [Music] dodge daytona turbo z it'll be a now you can get up to $1,000 cash back on all new american-made dodge cars thanks again America in 1985 the winning cars are the most prestigious auto races were equipped with good gear racing Eagles so it's small wonder than in 1986 most of the finest high performance street cars are equipped with Goodyear Eagles you either have Goodyear Eagles or you need them [Music] man has always been fascinated with food but in sport where there is no margin for error winning is more than a question for speed it's a measure of skill that's begun and though NASCAR has changed through the decade if spirit still rests on what men who race have always known not just the machine it's the man who drives it we're proud to be part of this race board to push the official beer of NASCAR the command has been given the engines are started there is an aerial view of Darlington International Raceway and you can see very clearly that this is not an exactly shape oval it's more egg-shaped Jack well Bob that's what the drivers referred to it is you look to the upper left of your screen that actually turns one into and then over in the bottom side is three and four there begin to pull away we better get your row assignments right now 40 cars ready to go and here any beers Walton 94 and Ronnie Thomason 48 the eighteenth row Dave Markuson 71 and duck Cam'ron and 17 in row number 19 potty sailor in 64 and JD McDuffie and number 70 and in the 20th and final row Bobby a wagon 74 and Marc Staal in car number 82 there is the front row Jeff Bodine and Tim Richmond and they are down the backstretch and we should be going green next time around and this is a tricky place for taking the green flag you've got to be careful to get yourself into single-file provision by the time to turn one to the outside row really looked for a spot being held by the inside row when they dropped the green flag it's very tricky when they come out of four and look at Harold Henderson green flag why you just can't pick a winner in this race there are upwards of 20 or 25 cars and drivers very capable of winning this race we are in bunny Baker's car number 88 sponsored by Crisco to have excellent shot from the interior of this car throughout the brand South 500 this afternoon there is who lined up in 14 starting position alongside him Rusty Wallace the winner of last year of last week's Bristol race here comes the Field Op of quarter number four Harold kinder waves the green dragon we are racing at Darlington [Music] he did trouble pop he is dropping back on the field Benny Parsons and several others are trapped behind him mean one cars in the wall - on the high side in turn 2 there the other one is the number 95 car of Davey Allison not serious wall contact but there was some scraping of the wall and you can see the savvy Allison's machine has been damaged and the bodywork pushed against the right front tire the left front I should say they write back to the yellow flag and Tim Richmond edges out Dale Earnhardt for the lead but just by a Stan Starling I've been a lead speculate Bob that possibly that's the problem that's it fell Jeff Conine is we look at Davey Allison limping on set off a chain reaction that resulted in the crash by Davi because we said before they have to come into that first turn and find a line single file we'll take a look at the restart of this race and see if we can see where it Telegraph's itself back to Davey Allison well you remember that last week Jeff what I also had a tough time at the beginning of the race now watch the number 7 car and let's see what happens there with Kyle Petty see if we can see where he goes further down back there he dives to the inside looking to get out of the way as the as the field on the inside is slowing down because they're all behind Bodine that's telegraphing itself back car by car by car almost like you're on an interstate and you pull up to an accident where everybody stops just begins it second buck well here's Jeff bodean pulling in through the pit area and also behind him comes Kyle Petty now the levi garrett crew headed by Gary Nelson is running to the Geoff Bodine car to push it into his scenario let's get out to the quarry well here comes Bodine and his bid his crew is pushing him at this point they don't know what's wrong with the car but it seems as if the engine has pumped out at it at the moment Gary Nelson now in that's what they're doing they're working on the electrical system changing over to the spare electrical system each of these cars he is now moving to the back of the system it tried to fire it just backfired up through the carburetor Bodine in serious trouble in goes its finding right in here now this is definitely not the way to start the race and dick remember like yesterday in the late-model sports 'men race they had a problem with the number 15 car for these Rick Hendrick stable and it was electrical as well let's go to Benny Parsons we have a radio in Benny's car and we'll see how this problem with Geoff Bodine affected him Benny this is Bob up in the booth you were kind of trapped there behind Jeff Bodine who had a problem with the start well Jeff is in the pits right now and it looks like it could be a serious problem for him now what do you do having lost several positions here on the first lap yeah I don't really know what to do right now just try to run as best I can and bother some good guys in front of me to try to follow these people if I can't pass this go ahead do it is the car running okay at this point maybe we find that one all right Benny will continue to be with you throughout the afternoon let's go down to dick once again for this further update on Jeff bodean well Bob they've just put a new distributor in bowties car apparently going back to the old electrical system a backup electrical system didn't do it so the new distributor went in incidentally in the last practice session yesterday afternoon they had to change the electrical system in Tim Richmond's car when it failed as well so here's the two top cars both have had electrical problems within the last 24 hours Kyle Petty by the way has been placed at the rear of the field for jumping to start here we go again the street comes out on lap number 4 the trends down 500 is underway once again the other roots her number two and now logged the backstretch Dale Earnhardt is running second Joe Ruttman is third in Sterling Marlin these three cards [Music] [Music] Joe Ruttman have more what from the rest of the field now Joe Ruttman looking strong watching inside of herd and his new heart Worley coming up ernhardt just took drastic action to try and avoid Richmond but Richmond was very loose to him coming out of that corner and he drops back here Joe residents are never second spot the lead now goes to Dale Earnhardt and will replay one happen over and turn out watch Richmond Richmond tale begin to problem and then Earnhardt makes a choice to try to go to the inside it almost sets off another accident learn art with the lead and Joe Ruttman in second position Joe with a second place finish this year at Richmond but other than that the car has just not held together for him he's hoping for an excellent finish here this afternoon and he's certainly one of those capable of making it number 12 different drivers of business Victory Lane Richard Petty and car number 43 we understand [Music] be that feed on the race right now carried an entire 33 you cannot run Darlington International Raceway without getting into the wall at least once or twice anybody including patty will be quickly tell you that but this early that would cause concern from how the car handling and an interesting development as far as Richard Petty is concerned with his physical health he recall he broke some ribs and he has a special hook up in the cockpit today more or less relaxes neck well yeah something out of what I would say a Rube Goldberg handbook root for head restraints but dick Berggren can it a little bit later about that so 18 laps have been completed now we have 500-mile race at Darlington it will be back for more after these messages [Music] you will inject the Dodge Lancers come without your own turbo charges and you can't expect that kind of power to stay put [Music] now you can get up to $1,000 cash back on all new american-made dodge cars thanks again America through hardware's ready for a great Pro Sale Pro a selection and pros advice Pro is service and pros out great price proves your best value with savings like these a ten and a half ounce cartridge of the front row have had their problems with Jeff Bodine has behind a wall at this point and Tim Richmond is also experienced in handling problems now watch the tail wag on Richmond car actually we're a little too far into it it already had happened but Earnhardt did the best he could to get down to the inside while we were away dick Berggren reported the very high golden that they had intentionally set the car up to be foots going in it's just a little looser than they want it to be and I'll tell you what Bob I have never heard of a crew chief setting a car up being loose going into a race at Darlington almost every driver will tell you they want a little bit of push in the car when they start to rain when trailing dealer here's the shot from an outdoor - what shot from the end seventh and eighth buddy is his seventh position is number 55 Copenhagen car and you see the way Benny kept looking to the outside pointing the nose over there try to get maybe he could get by but [Music] the disappointed pull hitter Jeff the tough break [Music] looked like we broke a camshaft the Riveter won't turn the engine just quit running shifted in the third gear and it's wet on the Stars that's a tough break but this part of race is dick I mean these fellas work hard how these engines do the best they can and a camshaft breaking is just a freak thing we haven't seen any of that a long while can they fix that you know they victim when they take the engine apart was $10 we're out for the day but still been a heck of a year we won Daytona got a couple crack records are already a lot of racing left the Rick Hendrick's team has got a lot of lot to be proud of Tim Richmond still out there let's hope he has a good day that's Jeff bodean he sat on the pole he is out of it already first car to drop out you know that's an interesting point Bob whatever talk to Jeff bodean my whole seat has been made just by that one victory see in his attitude even when he drops out of a racist early and he didn't hear [Music] for Jeff either he finished 24th and today will have to be listed I believe as the 40th finisher last place there's Dale Earnhardt you know the the times that a driver turns in in the final practice session is always important in last evening Dale Earnhardt was the fastest that may be an indication of things to come here this afternoon look how far back Tim Richmond is quality directly in front of Buddy Baker our camera car after starting on the outside pole and if that doesn't mean in concussion and see if the car begins to begin to bobble at all these see how they all try and line up single files on his close to the wall as they can they fertile down into that there you can see the car wag its tail you know what bakeries thinking right now I'm at room do I give him because this guy could lose it at any moment and by the same token Benny Parsons to his right behind buddy probably thinking the same thing watching and behind buddy is the number 55 car of Betty Parsons we've completed 19 last year in the track they continued to be held by Dale DeWine going into the car just died from the straightaway into the he does but he clearly got his hands full the car includes that it'd be like URI driving our car [Music] let it begin to slide and then overcorrected back it back up again now Baker says I've had enough of this I'm gonna try to get around him before he gets a turn trading gotta watch the holes [Music] [Music] want to get a feel the volume up on here and you possibly can get it turn the heat up to about chair you've got to wrap yourself with a couple get a feel for what it's like it's there for four and a half hours and don't move not exactly the way to spend a sunny afternoon [Music] I on the right track to pass the back markers now funny once again sixes nose to the inside of Tim Richmond as they go down the back or Benny bars you know he said he got no place to go [Music] yeah here like like that great baguette look wide very wide rate right but you can see that most of the track is apron the actual groove that they use here to run on is very very small [Music] to stock Tim Richmond and Benny Parsons is right behind [Music] describing the action of the Grand National reindeer in the cockpit of the old co-leaders Dale Earnhardt running second is Joe Ruttman and third Ricky Rudd back with more from Darlington South Carolina [Music] Bob Jenkins Jack arute and dick Berggren back at Darlington South Carolina where some masters fans have gathered with us this afternoon we'll keep an eye on the Masters golf tournament being not too far away from here throughout the afternoon and trying to keep you abreast of what's going on there from high above Darlington International Raceway this view of what's going on the green flag remains out and Dale Earnhardt has opened up quite a lead over Joe Ruttman like every race we've been to there's your leader is he going over some lap traffic Dale Earnhardt Bobby's yet to win a race this year he has 22nd in Atlanta he was rockingham and third at Richmond but has not visited Victory Lane so far this year new ricky rudd in the board is running in third spot than Darrell Waltrip is fourth and Bobby Allison is camera shutter vote then bloody maker [Music] our number 88 but he's not full-time on the Winston Cup trail anymore and we asked him how he felt about that honey do you miss being a full-time driver on the Winston Cup circuit not really I ran our races last beer is right now we're getting our operation the baton and all made they'd weigh right I think we're gaining leaps and bounds right now just be there we're trying [Music] a change back of him moving into a position as the number 33 skull bandit of Harry Gant Benny Parsons drops back to the ninth position the other leaders beginning to work the race traffic we've got to be very careful we talked about a one-room racetrack only literally past on the straightaways here there's Darrell Waltrip ears North laces Walter Benjamin the number 22 Miller but here to patent that were raised traffic become so critical Bobby 20 Baker when he was beginning to work around Tim Richmond he had no place to go might be a crack in the windshield on Bobby Alice's car that's a problem that flaked on me Houston yesterday in the grand national event it brightness field of vision it looks like must've dinged it somehow we visit maybe a lug nut it'd come up and hit him right in the windshield Darrell Waltrip won yesterday's Grand National race here at Darlington International Raceway and latemodel sportsman and he really earned the victory - because he raced with men past they learn March and the late stages of the race and Darrell went on to register of agree here we talk about race traffic so see the race traffic the lap car went down way low on the even side of the racetrack to let not to get out of the throttle and be able to get set up properly to go into trapping Harrison as much of a factor as it is on faster racetracks as we will see at Talladega for instance and the first weekend of May when we visit there but you do pick up a bit of a draft while maybe marginal as compared to what they thought or tell you can't use it and you should use it to your advantage especially when you're trying to chase down [Music] you can use it by getting behind those lab cars trying to catch some air there's Dale Earnhardt looking to the inside of look like the Freelander car miellyn put him a lap down so there are 23 cars left on the lead lap this is a card faced by Earnhardt so far Bob it certainly is he has just pulled away from the rest of the all straightaway at Manny guys are continuing to run in order although Harry Gant has moved up to sixth place now ahead of Tim Richmond go ahead a buddy baker got any worse in the last time we checked in buddy Baker looks to the inside he's alongside of him coming out of turn number 2 down the backstretch let's see if he can make the pass he's got to get himself position he does ready to go back up and Benny Parsons passed with have got by Richmond so they dropped Richmond back by two places before they get to the turn they've got to get back to that high side obviously Tim having problems with a hand on that car because he is dropping back on the field the old Monon in Richmond and Tim drops back to ninth Neil Bonnett is in tenth position Italia I would really have to question [Music] with any degree of looseness going into this event because it's obvious that while he was fast and qualified being very fast to the back [Music] we talked about a possible crack in Bobby Allison's windshield dick Berggren can you update us from the pit area yeah sure can buy that possible crackit to real life the debris came back and took a truck out of it because the track isn't propagating now you can't run out here with a cracked windshield what bobby allison intends to do at the same time though in yesterday's Grand National race there's a tremendous amount of air that comes back on to the windshield and could very possibly make that crack larger as the afternoon wears on there's a little bit of a difference between Alice's cracking subscribers nuisance crack was actually a whole a piece penetrated the windshield and with that poll we had the problem they began to penetrate and propagate all over the windshield with bobby's as long as they don't get a minor hole in it it'll cause the air to suck inside the cockpit those of you wondering the guy who won both races here at Darlington last year Bill Elliott in the number nine course Ford is running in 20th position the leader Dale Earnhardt and we will be right back the trance out 500 underway from Darlington International Raceway here's what's happened so far Jeff bodean the pole sitter and a problem right at the drop of the green flag is already out of the race the leader is Dale Earnhardt second place belongs to Joe Ruttman and this man Ricky Rudd is running third in a porno as we indicated earlier in the program in speed here this weekend and he showed some strength last week at Bristol and you know both times they had a problem well we've got a problem in Bobby hill and it's fun in the middle of the earth for everybody it marks coming down onto the apron for young Bobby hill [Music] resting on the apron of the racetrack [Music] so the yellow comes out for the second time this afternoon here is Cale Yarborough in car number 28 this race down in the 23rd position qualifying about 6 miles an hour off the bull sitting speed and he was none too happy and when we alluded to the air dance on the front of those cars on the forts we'll talk about that a little bit later but that story has long with Ruud what I was going to say about Ricky Rudd is but more again is not here today he is not bringing on the viral hepatitis and has missed the last two grand of rather Winston Cup races and we certainly hope he'll be back very very shortly dick Berggren in the pit area dick groper to the pit area the leader Dale Earnhardt we're going to take on at least outside fires take on a load of fuel perfectly routine pit stop here hit the ton of the yellow flags though tremendous run she would like to be a four-tire change they've got the right side train so I everybody up and down pit road is adopted the same illegal this year everybody is going to take advantage of it wherever possible and there goes her just before the yellow came out they learn hard hat laughed Bill Elliott and Richard Petty take a look at Buddy Baker now Baker's right there waiting for his crew to get done they've changed the tires Benny's away you see Ricky Rudd pulled away look at the windshield Bob on that car and I just come in for service you can see how Street it is anyway they've dropped the jack let's see how quick he comes up through the gearbox here he's going down the straightaway pulls in a second and there's Dale Yarborough and he's done the backstretch and good Bobby Hillin is out of the car Bobby has run into a problem for the second week in a row you'll recall last week he was involved in a nasty three-car accident at International Raceway in which he got his the bell rung pretty good out of today's rate also here at Darlington we talked about the rule changes and how they're affecting the cars let's get more on that now to going to Jack arute last year many people said that the Fords had the unfair advantage but what a difference a year makes now there's been three new rules changes in just the last couple of weeks the first one will all the cars are allowed to go back to 1984 size throttle bores so that's helped the Fords and the General Motors products the second rule is all cars now use the same size spoiler so again that's a toss-up but here is the third rule and here's the rub look at this window on the Chevrolets for 1986 see how acute and slanting it is well let's compare that to the Ford Thunderbird over here behind me of Ricky Rudd's when you take a look at its rear window you notice that it's an awful lot like last year in fact it is the same it doesn't have is acute an angle so the air doesn't flow it's quickly and hard over therefore not as much downforce now here's where the third NASCAR rule comes into play and maybe why the Fords are not as competitive as they'd like to be here at Darlington the use of these front air dam is now allowed on all makes of cars it doesn't seem to hurt the Chevrolet too much because the front air dam creates so much downforce but it seems to hurt the Fords why well they don't have as much downforce created by the back window remember the window on the Chevrolet it really sucked the rear end of the car to the ground so it could commiserate with the front here in the Fords when the drivers take the car into the corner the nose really grips the ground lifts the rear end off the racetrack and they report that the car is very loose that could be the reason why most of the Ford products failed to qualify in the top 20 the only one that did ricky rudd he starts seventh but let me update you on that too this car Cale Yarborough has elected to go and start this race without that front air Dan they've gone through the 85 nose and let's check in with kale and see what he thinks kale how is that new knows the 85 knows working on the car is it any better than what you had when you first came here [Music] I think it's working a little bit better with the air damp we hit all the chlorophyll okay but we still got a long ways to go we're gonna have to work with it ever knowing that you've got to work and adjust on the car and every pitstop are you hoping for a number of cautions well good lucky and we'll stay on top of all the adjustments on that hardy machine right now Cale Yarborough runs in 11th position here's how they're running Dale Earnhardt is back in the lead for a moment there Dave Marcus was but now her Marcos back into the top spot Ricky Rudd second Joe Ruttman is third then Darrell Waltrip followed by Bobby Allison and Harry Gant back with more from the trend south 500 at Darlington after these messages what competitors have been in change tires Nuttall are they putting fresh rubber on but they're also adjusting the suspension and today we're going to follow with Andy Petree who is the suspension or rubber expert for Benny Parsons exactly what they do when they come in and make these pit stops what Andy did you do on this pit stop to Benny's car how can we expect to see it run now since NT car was loose in its last round the green flag and we put a 5/8 staggered set of tires on from one end and that should tighten the car up what that basically means is that the left rear tires difference in circumferential size when compared to the right is less the left and right rear tires are about the same size Benny's going to be able to tell them what's going to happen very shortly when the green flag drops they hope they've gone in the right direction and they hope they get rid of the car being loose those changes being made on the Benny Parsons car to hopefully get it handling better there's Benny as the field moves down the backstretch now the field still under caution because of the incident involving Bobby Dillon who is okay the car has been taken off of the racetrack and we should be going green now within a few laps we have 17 cars on the lead lap however a couple of cars who have been left include Bill Elliott and Richard Petty and it looks Bob like they're getting start going one to go is the we'll be getting a start very shortly and what an unusual thing to think they learn her see a guy like Billy Elliot there are the Winston Cup point standings going into this event darrell waltrip in the lead with 825 followed by Terry Labonte then they learn mark Rusty Wallace and Bill Elliott and the second five include Geoff Bodine Kyle Petty Harry Gant Tim Burton and Richard Petty and everybody better watch out for Waltrip if he begins to score that many points this early in the season it could be another Winston Cup championship for that team out of Engel Hollow and Dale has certainly changed his philosophy about racing he says now it's more beneficial as far as winning the Winston Cup is concerned to be consistent rather than actually going for the win of a particular event ironic front row and a lap down Bill Elliott what a difference a year makes we are ready to go green once again the pace car is off the track and Earnhardt picks up the pace now both Elliott and city will attempt to get ahead of Earnhardt and then if the yellow comes out again they can make up the lap but boy they'll just flashed away from the rest of the field one more time they take that single-file line down through as they hurtle down the backstretch it's still earn are beginning to pull away now [Music] and Elliott has fallen into third place there in line [Music] it's still early in the race you've got to let things shake down I think Ricky Rudd is driving a very very glittery [Music] just because of past experience over the last five events where he's run strong early [Music] the time they got ready to drop the white Oh update you on Bobby Hillin he fine no problems whatsoever after [Music] relax [Music] at the tail end of this picture you'll see a green car now that's Joe Ruttman the Quaker State [Music] strong run for Joe you know he is yet to win a Winston Cup victory he's funny [Music] car is owned by Kenny Bernstein one of the black racers Kenny deciding to become involved not competition [Music] named Joe Ruttman spies successful for him you know I can't he burst he got involved he what dick bear into letting him take a stock car around and just try it in practice when they were getting ready for the day car owner instead of a driver on the Winston Cup or date well I'm not so sure that I would want to go as bad that the drag racer goes in a quarter of a mile no sport razors [Music] the leader of the race now was about a five [Music] ricky rudd there is Rudd and second quarter [Music] pick up lots of action Morgan Shepherd Morgan Shepherd Yahoo's running right ahead of him [Music] we also involved with there's a good example there's to the inside trying to get around to Friedlander car very very forced high on the racetrack and Joe dear Italy also passing him now that is 11th position cases of Darlington etiquette for our viewers that was a path was done by cale yarborough and actually if you had to place the blame on there and there goes Wallace the place to play my Tommy should've given away because you look at look at three cars that's our camera car in the back buddy baker bill glued to the rear bumper of Tim Richmond trying to work that race traffic here's the captain Cody [Music] Morgan Shepherd passing Tommy Ellis go down the backstretch in single [Music] there is richmond directly behind richmond is the captain Kody's car reset or it will be fine one day Atlanta Winston tough race earlier this year in this car last week he did not run first time out in it since he did win the Winston Cup event [Music] away once again with [Music] where's Terry Labonte in the Piedmont airlines polls mobile and behind him is Rick Wilson the driver from Bartow Florida [Music] five in yesterday's Grand National race pretty often in the early days when we died by the name of AJ boy involved with the country season long quite heavily on the stock-car side with Boyd and use this come to a lot of races this voice sidekick the floor was vacated by Joe Ruttman after they lost the Bulger sponsorship and they all say Morgan McClure's team all say that they're very happy with rich welcome he's already won one of the races this year in Rockingham and you know there you can see from the in-car camera we're taking a look at Bobby Allison's rear decklid [Music] 150 miles an hour breaking in fifty miles an hour straight away now are right behind smoke we were getting reports that there was smoke coming from the engine compartment at least from the in-car indeed the fact be a tough break for that long elegantly they're very high buying everywhere you can see the smoke again not sure though whether its fire smoker engine smoke well I've been noticing that throughout the race and it appeared to be tire smoke right now sterling larvae is running in eighth position doing well in that car with the engine of that machine TransAm 500 from darling to the International Raceway for you this afternoon on [Music] laughs a bit completed the leader is Dale Earnhardt to be back Dale Earnhardt leading the trend Sal 500 at Darlington International Raceway there he is in corner number three his advantage over Ricky Rudd about two seconds right now Ricky Rudd can have his hands full momentarily because directly behind Rudd is Joe Ruttman and behind Ruttman is the 33 car Larry is really on her we've been working into the upper traffic and even a challenge for that second desert the running right behind ring lost a lap already here in the first 67 of this event that bill Elliot threat to make a dream in a row here in Darlington marches therefore second position the two green cars however that will be a contest for [Music] and here again Earnhardt is really driving a thread of working through traffic high side of the race if things are going quite nicely for the Wrangler machine you just put a lap on the number of eighty-two part of March stall [Music] coach that have joined Winston tough competition here [Music] now putting a lap on the number 64 car which is being driven in hard to believe that they've announced double Langley has announced that he's going to sell an entire but their stance there's the battle we're talking about for that third spot ant looks to the inside tries to get up alongside of Rutman and he got it yes he does into third place goes Harry Gant from Taylorsville North Carolina in the 46 year old driver with Hal Needham and Burt Reynolds owning this car and Harry is definitely off the moves now why they haven't missed the lap car of Bill Elliott his concern is to get around Elliott is second place Ricky Rudd getting around Elliott is going to be no easy task Elliott knows that he's there Rudd knows that Elliott's there he's going to work the race traffic Rudd that is who is his management number nine Bill Elliott is a moving pic to keep Harry Gant at bay picking up arrived a little bit thirty three gold bandits chevrolet cruze upon this car with a couple of top ten here in fact Bob watches they come down out of turn two and go down the backstretch they'll begin to close up you were asking before about how useful the draft was will that work [Music] try to use it to your advantage can't look to the inside saw he wasn't going to have enough time and what separates them so much as they go into the corner just how hard on the binders date yet we talked about the rule changes that the fact that that rear spoiler is now fire allow it to be early enough to pick back the spots maybe work back up went to the inside Rudd just hanging in there on the high side cracking arrows out of two Elliot or racing against each other here not for position but Bill Elliott trying to get his lap back now does the larger rear spoiler have an effect on traffic yes it does it should it should aid the drafting front and turn number four that was hairy hand who was trying to go to the inside of Bill Elliott and they touched as they come out of horn boy it was a miracle that somebody didn't lose control he was loose in the middle of the turn tried to gather it in that's why Harry Gant went down to the inside now he's checking everything over before he goes back to full throttle racing because that was scary he traded some paints and sheet metal will lapped cars now Harry's concern is keeping third position because Joe Ruttman [Music] Eliot as they touch their and turn number four and Ruttman now is right up on Harry gasps welcome Bob it takes a couple of slap free to be sure that maybe Yemen rub the fender down to cut a tire something like that once you know now watched it he's on the inside Harry Gant trying to hold on at all Trane's up again look at that just absolutely just blade right into Phil Elliott for the good job by Joe Ruttman absolutely he was right there on the bumper of Mary gasps but did avoiding the problem and with where we saw a lot of actors yesterday in the grand national ring [Music] or you can look the line so on hair again it's got a hand that he was before because he goes way high in the quarter ruffman's going to sense that he's going to try go away low and get the position [Music] not everything but I guess these two cars here battling for position out there an indication that that certainly way when they started paying off at greenbacks it's funny they said no problem with green as long as you want to pay our 28:58 update on the air for you right now indicates that earlier this morning in Spain Ayrton Senna was the winner of the Spanish crown ring and what a tremendous race that Nigel Mansell at the line hundreds of a second Mansell just good on the accelerator and close in on Senna in the final and almost pulled off the victory but airs and reports victory number one a night [Music] a heck of a battle for position down here in that was an alert watching the 33 of hearing and rub and just right from real Terry closing in on the number 9 car of Bill Elliott once again the racetrack in this lower traffic on the low side let's go down to dick Bertrand in the pit area who was with Travis charter the hairy hand crew [Music] got a little tight situation up there trying to get my veal and [Music] and that's what we're trying to get out there hopefully the beers better late the race that's Travis Carter he's very against fortune [Music] Bill Elliott not on the lead lap Arianne is a second-place car of Ricky bloody Baker with our [Music] but he figure is there you see the field study [Music] inaudible [Music] Raceway in his blood Weiser sponsored car number 12 pulling away car goes to the and directly into the retaining wall we have feel about that incident well Neil you had your bell rung pretty good last week at Bristol is everything okay well I fit Monday and Tuesday trying to recoup [Music] about weeds they got feeling better [Music] and feel bonded and right now he's in it used to be held by Dale Earnhardt there he is it's been his race since the drop of the green flag when Jeff bodean the pole sitter had trouble and then Tim Richmond engineering handling problems Earnhardt won at the lead is still in the lead and we'll be back after these ESP is auto racing 86 fans next weekend will be with us for the first Union Bank 400 at that North Wilkesboro North half mile racetrack a lot different type of racing that we're seeing here today certainly it's right that always interesting racing that's next Sunday will be on the air live at 1:00 o'clock eastern time the first [Music] get an update from the pit area we go once again to dicker great fun if any Parsons pit right now anything [Music] in the cruiser in relation to fire man does not live by tires diver at night position there's they were not go out of that car and see very little of that in the first 88 laps of this race because that handling so well we were remarking at how well it looked it was reminiscent of the fine run and again at the end of the summer here at Darlington dollar bill just look the same like the car was without any problem but it's still early it's a place they called the track too tough to tame [Music] drivers have fun out last 15 or 20 laps captain too early to even speculate ernhardt I'm sure would like to be two races will be televising for you from Darlington International Raceway on Labor Day weekend of course the southern 500 will be live here on ESPN the Achilles heel for Dale Earnhardt this year has been the last relapse at any event he had so many problem we're at the end [Music] bloody Baker [Music] Neil Diamond [Music] like the point there's that battle still today raging they do get around Phil Elliott though both Carrie Anne and Joe Ruttman have passed Bill Elliott and so now we have second third and fourth running right together nose to tail on the track a classic display of how tough it is to get around a lapped car yudhiqa they got around Elliott they close right up on the rear deck letter bricks truck rut still trying to use that traffic to his advantage try to pick and choose sixty-four driven by Connie Saylor tries to hold the ball up down the backstretch area right there looking for the spot Joe Ruttman cannot be passed over because he is running has been stationed erase let's watch Harry Gant now to the insider blood Harry Gant who's in the second position in turn number four and did you see how he saw the wheelie and it cocked all the way down and here comes your I'm in talent to the inside all that center spot Rudd covered this project go away one green car a lap of Rockefeller cucas I do you'll be able to pass Ricky Rudd and move into CERN it's a good battle for third position Ruttman does go low at the end of the backstretch he'll try to take the spot in turn drink into it it was way to know whether he's going to be able to make the pass or not if it isn't up alongside and bid way down the backstretch you gotta wait for the front stretch but if he looks to the inside again [Music] finish right I'm gonna check out what it's cars doing you know Joe Ruttman here in the early [Music] qualifying [Music] again down the backstretch Leslie if you can make it down the Jimmy he does Ruttman would be good so ruttman started six and then moved into third position rut is back to fourth and the interval between first and second now Dale Earnhardt and arrogant is five and a half second [Music] characteristics of the other car there's rotman long shot there you can see please begin [Music] seconds we'll keep an eye on they were [Music] there is second place here again and we stand forward now and pick up the leaders Dale Earnhardt there he is in quarter number four so it's a nice advantage for [Music] and I keep harping on the crap with race traffic as we see Bronwen shark working on the backstretch yeah look at that gas man well that's old Jesse he's big enough to lift the car up there's a team that's been terrific controversy Bob over the last couple of weeks there is no happiness in the number 98 Pam and some problems down the road Ron Bouchard being rumored being desirous of getting out of his contract now the interval is down to less than five seconds on the race rackets four point eight seconds the lead hands over Harry get him down to 4.5 seconds the fastest car on the racetrack is Harry Gant and the key is directly in front of her entire are some 50 yeah there's some distortion something on the front end of that Jody Ridley car number 75 our duct-tape that isn't quite up to darlington standards the way actually [Music] they get overheated get it off worn off Jodi Ridley in the Prima fortunate for them especially with a Pontiac because there isn't that much open hair [Music] it look like a garbage bag it really did as promptly got made its way from the grandstand onto the racetrack and has caused Jody Ridley to come prematurely to come in and get that away from the radiator they also choose to change the tires on the on both sides of appeared they've got the right side change now the crew goes over and begins to work on the left side of the car on the racetrack it is muddy bakers still chasing [Music] who is liking this year work very hard to get it up stuff about this place he says this is the rate that he practice [Music] just above his wrists there's the tachometer on the car now he comes down the straightaway knocking around now watch get back up for the quarter saw that wheel all the way down keep the car down when you've got your hands full [Music] [Music] the interval between first and second now about four seconds [Music] bought Harry Gant challenge the army by the Raisina game 7,000 right now moving up to 7500 our [Music] 7,500 our I believe it about 3000 yeah you maybe 4,000 at the outside but a lot of that's a good testimony to how tough these racing engines 357 laughs make up the trends now 500 his name [Music] there is Neil Bonnett once again who's running in the jr. Johnson darrell waltrip is currently in fifth place very end of the week so we'll be back with more about live coverage on this beautiful Sunday afternoon in Darwin right Jodi rittany had to make that pit stop these molds are supposed to be round and that what the luck Vulcan luck that go through the left rear wheel on Jodi Ridley's car was working lose this thing was about ready to take a trip down the street within they got the garbage bag or whatever it was off the front of the car back up to speed out up there on the racetrack behind Morgan Shepherd now the leader Dale Earnhardt has passed Dave Marcus and now is about the left last week Twitter at Bristol there are currently 16 cars on the lead lap and he is about to as a matter of fact does lap Rusty Wallace and the corner and he don't see any baubles [Music] nice straight line beneath that returns one got the car perfectly leap for this point in the race showing it by the amount of separation he's got over second place there again in last year's Transcom [Music] the first 200 laps before mechanical problems came here and here in the southern 500 last year [Music] until the engine quit on standing here the leader is earned March 2nd has cancer he rides if his Darrell Waltrip in sixth position and Tommy is the Obama ages Buddy Baker ninth Betty Parsons and ten to Sterling Marlin running in 11th position as Morgan Shepherd 12th as Cale Yarborough 13th position is Tim Richmond 14th is Terry Labonte lap down in 15th position is Rusty Wallace cars out of the race at this point include Geoff Bodine at the very drop of the green flag also animal [Music] tired and so has Jimmy so has a running third place car into the pits for stop right [Music] there is this a routine stop or isn't it a little early for that have to be pretty close to a routine stop could be could be a little early 111 lack of it complete the racetrack [Music] to stop under green and so Joe Ruttman will at this point beat down one lap there's the leader Dale Earnhardt has begin to hop the backstretch he'll continuing to lead this trance out 500 [Music] Dale Earnhardt has led 92 of the first 112 laps Bob we should figure that was in the next 10 to 12 lat beginning to pick let's find out if it was a routine stop for Joe Ruttman dick what's the story down there that is they're running low on [Music] that is the story it was a routine stop for fuel only no problem as far as the engine is concerned or anything else they just here comes Kyle Petty this is a good indication though that pit stop will be coming up usually pit five to seven laps earlier both forger on his rope Kyle Petty and Ricky Rudd as you see they're in for their regularly scheduled pit stop so as I said before last two for 75 laps to be completed the entire field taking on fuel runs down the way and my pet he goes out of the pit area behind all of this rusty wallet just been put down a wallet this value guard design fit area and on the right side of the car now here is where you begin to hold your breath and you're out there because you're hoping for a caution which would give you the advantage over other people but if you're running out of fuel you've got to come down here into the pitch you've got to take it on I hope everybody else has to do likewise there's your leader pulling onto the pitch for his service team goes to work don't go for an outside rubber and a full 22 gallons of fuel [Music] right behind him ernhardt there is Harry cans [Music] staying out there on the racetrack making it 116 laps and Gant is in quarter number one and Earnhardt is picking up speed in the second quarter and they'll phase on the lead lap but just barely but they've narrowed the margin down with good work by the Richard Childress crew because it was a fast pit stop and pay dividends he was the only one of the top guys not to go a lap down Richard Petty comes in for a pit stop at the SV [Music] on that gar [Music] my job during pit stop and you can see one of the crew members going inside the car to make a chassis adjustment here sit again [Music] didn't quite get a full load of [Music] before an interesting development though ernhardt to get more fuel there's bill Elliot back out of the race second off of the afternoon [Music] later down the line take on a full gallons of fuel [Music] really size of the process Gerald Morgan Shepherd winner in Atlanta reduced you have been nervous by the race Hill Farms team headed by Jack PB&J Gelder and they do say that you think the reason they changed the fire it takes just as long to fill it took two 22 gallons of fuel as it does the change outside or inside tires so they just accomplished both under green flag conditions without arrogance is the leader of this race he has not made a pit stop [Music] and neither have there [Music] Benny Parsons but in for their second stop Harry Gant is one of run with that cool flow meter will tell you just how many gallons of fuel you have left so that's aiding Harry can right now if he waked for caution flies Darrell Waltrip is coming in for [Music] that area to go [Music] or a pit stop [Music] 13-3 a very good stop for Darryl like making a sort of chassis adjustment that support trade well the car is going at least at this point time buddy baker pulling back out onto the grape track after having me to stop now here comes Benny then he was running night [Music] his way toward the pit area and the only other [Music] in the rape [Music] good time 14.6 fifth time merit they make no [Music] less than healthy Neil Yarborough was then now pitch here on both the front stretch and the back stretch and Cale Yarborough's fit in on the back stretch there we go Harry can remain let's see what happened here he is getting excellent fuel mileage in this car he's in turn number three now we'll see if he takes the low road and comedy tell us once again here is Neil Bonnett now in for the second stop and now ganz is the holding we anticipate here again stop [Music] the windchill that was [Music] arrogant is dropping whoa on the racetrack in turn number four is now down on the the track has Neil Bonnett pulls out Harry Gant comes in the leader is in for his second pit stop of the afternoon let's go to dick Berggren [Music] really great cuz they go to work on it I'm really going to get a break car came down the straightaway was full coming out of the exhaust on the net [Music] I will be nothing Harry built back up beam and go is now being held by Dale Earnhardt the middle of the fact [Music] while Harry Gant is now in the middle of the back threat though a quarter of a lap mayor rather quarter of a straightaway [Music] has been completed 500 has completed 126 laps with Dale Earnhardt back in the lead and we'll be at the trance out 500 in Darlington South Carolina with a hundred 30 laps completed Dale Earnhardt is the leader Harry Hanna's second Joe Ruttman third Ricky Rudd his fourth and Darrell Waltrip running in fifth position we had 12 cars that are currently under the [Music] as Benny Parsons sign 20 Baker ten his Neil Bonnett 11 is the number 25 car of Tim Richmond and then in 12th position is Morgan Shepherd and right at hinamori sure but there is Morgan moving to the inside right now ology right behind Morgan so Morgan is in the is in the chance of being black at the moment and running together on the racetrack [Music] also Benny Parsons the race for 6th 7th and 8th position and also Sterling Marlin they're in [Music] position three cars in a race for to fly here MacFarlane wanted Benny Parsons state is proved like he should as he maintained his line going into the corner now Benny's gonna look to the inside of Bobby's he can get it looks like the cars actually wobble taking a second if it comes out of the corner get you ready for the rundown [Music] Bobby covered the spot do it this time seven eight going at it here Benny to the inside of Bobby Allison at the end of the front stretch the car side by side they go into turn one side by side and Benny has the line he goes into six spot a nice move there by Benny and a nice move by Bobby - Bobby knows what the etiquette is he said he was up alongside my doorpost in his position he backed out allowed Benny the free line going in at the corner now we'll see if Sterling Marlin can talk Bobby into doing the same thing for him [Music] bullseye barbecue sauce Chevrolet started this race in seventh spot Marlin looks inside on the main straightaway as they cross the stripe no move by Marlin well he had a good teacher but he may need a little bit more remedial work before he tries it himself [Music] Bobby Allison from Hueytown 22 [Music] he's just so much fun to be around let's take a look at Sterling Marlin if he's gonna get by Bobby far enough still Bobby quite enough that he'd been just a few more feet further down the racetrack he might have been able to take the spot away from Bobby Allison but not this time some parallels is that of the car you're going to pass then the car being passed backs off into the fire [Music] and 35 lat your track at North Wilkesboro North Carolina for a 400 lat there we hope you'll be with us we hope we have a great of weather as we have had here at Darlington all weekend long if there was on the Friday but [Music] irony you know who used to drive from [Music] Sterling's father cuckoo drove rappelling into a second-generation drivers do with the same buddy baker to carry our in-car [Music] [Music] a card laughs [Music] [Music] take a look at the picked up by you got a bigger a driver like [Music] looking out a window like that I would want to I would much prefer [Music] [Music] here's going [Music] smoke is coming from the Sterling Marlin car and he dives to the inside of the racetrack Marvin [Music] and this will bring out a caution flag he did not get into the pit area is law on the racetrack here in the base straightaway and another caution period our third of the after [Music] with hot belly and they did so well that they don't were running sir until last they ran out of gas and then to come to Atlanta they did well to the engine expired and then to come here and have this problem after testing he doesn't expensively down [Music] Sterling Marlin in car number one started this race in seventh position about to pull out on to the racetrack ahead of the leader Dale Earnhardt there was some discussion about where to pick up the leader in this race Jack that you might explain well we go back to the Atlantean so the top team went a lap down everyone [Music] the enrichment has involved in cale yarborough they were accused of having gone a lap down because they passed the base car will be in hand what happened is the field didn't pick up the pace car the first lap under caution the pace car pulled out while they Richmond and the Yarborough were still in the fish and then Yarborough in Richmond cooked past the pace car they were suckin the bits in it because the pace car had not gotten out quick enough to pick up the field Benny Parsons also in 4/5 his work is completed and he's back out there on the racetrack [Music] all afternoon and we get more on that situation now by going to dick Berggren Steiger which is defined as the difference in size of the right rear versus the left rear tire is one of the key variables that controls the handling of a stock car these tires behave as if a solid axle connects them and if they were in fact the same size when the car got to the corner it would try to move straight ahead did you see this moving in a straight ahead direction and just rolled down an incline but it's a left rear tire is smaller than the right rear tire when the car gets to the corner it behaves as if it's got a cone determining its direction this ice-cream cone tries to go in the leftward direction now these differences aren't major they range in fact from as little as a quarter of an inch to about I need you to have a little more than that in any condition beggars important how important when you see a competitor that's not running well in a stock car race and he comes in and makes a pit stop and changes tires he's not only putting on cooler tires that are faster he's also almost certainly adjusting the stagger and if he comes out and he's running faster than before you can bet they got the stagger right the trend South 500 is 142 laps old and we are under our third caution period of the afternoon because of a blown engine on the Sterling Marlin car we'll resume our activity from Darlington International Raceway welcome back to Darlington South Carolina where the green flag is [Music] as what with Harry and running second Darrell Waltrip sistahs Ricky Rudd sixes Bobby Allison and seven Finny Parsons those cars right now for an update on the most recent round of pit stops while we were in Benny Parsons pit he has changed four tires he did new tires and he went out for the lat more dire [Music] hopefully in our next caution period we'll get a chance to talk with Benny on the radio to find out exactly how the handling in that car you know Bob we talked a lot early in the telecast about the run to the back [Music] Richmond he's working his way back to the car [Music] and that's the reason why he is a lap down but [Music] they learn hard and then if there were another [Music] trip is right behind Buddy Baker an hour in car cam [Music] to the high side and also Richard Petty and it appears as if money is flowing down because several cars got around him he is to the inside the racetrack and his looks terminal even turn number two right now well down to the inside of the racetrack and something has gone wrong in buddy baker's car we're gonna try terry labonte he's got a problem - he's slowing down coming into the pit the cockpit of Buddy Baker started the identification we'll be able to go on behind the wall there you can see [Music] to the inside wall it's the film moving around in there he appears to be okay not really that severe impact with the wall but nevertheless marcin states the concrete here off of corner number four to the inside of the track in less than a minute [Music] shortest man [Music] like they're gonna be going behind the wall the body work back on the left front tire of that Phil Hartman star and he'll be coming in and repairs will be made to that repairs can be made to the terry labonte car and the buddy baker car will replay what happened up in turn number four with Bill Parsons here's the car sideways now he's crying he should have blocked the brakes up there a little bit quicker than he did saw the wall try to straighten it out in the rookie races and a rookie meetings they try and tell you keep the brakes locked don't unlock them and let the car move that wall is big in heart full HP Bailey knocked down the wall there last year and Charlie Luck had an accident in that location of the racetrack yesterday in the Grand National race will be you rejoin us for the trend South 500 as the green light comes down once again they go to arrest in the corner number one wheel trying desperately to get his lap back but he will not do it as Dale Earnhardt pulls away as they go down the backstretch [Music] Joe Ruttman and darrell waltrip both came in for pit stop running in sick [Music] 53 laps have been completed Earnhardt continuing to dominate this race Bobby now the windshield in that car in 23 seconds or something like that Jack well it can be done I've seen it done before it's a fairly simple thing to accomplish look at Allison seem like a new windshield didn't help Allison maybe trying to get around go around [Music] does that Brendan wins [Music] positions changing here Joel Ekman moves into fourth Bobby Allison there number 22 is in fifth position and Benny Parsons right behind him having an excellent run really driving that car very very well obviously from what they the prize of in terms of on the car the car is to his liking might be there at the end of this thing challenging the track that moved up today I hope yesterday as he was in the broadcast booth with us and expressed the hope that he could take that Oldsmobile the victory lane this afternoon and he is certainly filled with in unfortunately our in-car camera car is retired for the afternoon let's find out why as we go to dick Berggren well I'm standing with one of our best photographers for the day buddy what happened [Music] what happened but it just went running got it good not quite as good as urn are we running good and they're still working on the engine are you going to try to go back out and continue the race buddy it depends on what it is I can't really see any point now we're getting left behind but I'd like to say hello to everybody Kripke though I'm starting to that side happen that way and they're changing the carburetor on that automobile right now and certainly thanks to money for some excellence in car camera work in there fighting for position all during the race now look at Joe Ruttman putting some heat on Ricky Rudd he tried of coming into turn one [Music] see what happens when he comes out of turn four he really made an assault on ruckman in the green car and Rudd in the red car Rudd lead coming out of it he's in third position Ruttman in fourth inside is he going to make it he's not up for posted or post yet now he is yeah nice moves Joe Ruttman has moved into third spot and nice gentlemanly gesture there by Ricky Rudd allowing Joe to slip by and go into third he's very strong here with 158 out of 367 laps complete in the trance out 500 Rutland into third [Music] had nothing but bad luck so far in the season but Kenny Bernstein and company really felt like they had their act together coming down here and that they would be a contender for the victory here in the trance out 500 he finished 11th in last year's trends out 500 and with the nation today's of course the second place that he ran at Richmond but Jo is certainly one that can be a winner number 12 ricky rudd dispatched her been dispatched by Joe Ruttman and he's got a look in his rearview mirror and what does he save Bobby Allison Allison beginning to haunt him as well as Benny Parsons there they are racing for a spot the spot currently held by Rudd is fourth position you can be sure Allison's going to measure him up before he devised him and set them to the side [Music] showing anything here that is on the inside of the track and straight away but he is a lap down so is Cale Yarborough or was pinned to lap down and Izzie's 11 also a lap down run it really give it the board [Music] he qualified well as we said in the 8th position he's run up front all afternoon but more sitting at home watching it he they're doing a great job his son [Music] we're trying to defend some honor Baker was dropping out of the race so was terry labonte who is second in Winston Cup points going into this event let's go down to dick Berggren and Labonte has already changed into his street clothes Terry what happened is obviously a terminal problem with the car well I'm not really sure it looked like either the cams after time and Dan broke and that's the second time today we've heard possible camshaft break Jeff bodean said at the beginning of the race he thought that with his problem as well Jerry a former Winston Cup champion looking to repeat in 1986 but is going out so early in this race the way rut has got his hands full Bob everywhere he goes he's being shadowed by Bobby Allen a master at making the path he'll wait you lo you would do a feeling that well I'm gonna stay back here and let you run a while and then he'll strike like a cobra get the position he's gone before you even know what meanwhile we go back up front and check on an hour [Music] racetrack between first and second Dale Earnhardt continues to leave but not too far behind his arrogant Airy [Music] that Travis Carter said he felt that the car would come in a little later in the race and we're getting down to that point down it looks as if that cars running his least as good as your leader and you can see the separation between the two not much maybe five seven car lengths and they come across the stripe to score another lap [Music] decorating the horse and Senate and the leader is approaching in corner number two down the backstretch that is Bobby way back way back moved to the end passes but he does separate hurt heart and and in the third and fourth turn play wax that yellow car there [Music] he's been around so it's clear sailing now between arrogant man here's a lap down in a we have had eight different leaders in this race and Morgan Shepherd is trying desperately to get his lap back Morgan is in 11th position and he's right in that fight with Ricky Rudd and Bobby Allison he's in the bottom of the ladder though he's got to get by Allison they're downstairs he does that he accomplished now he's got to get by run get by Rudd then all he has is three cars himself and getting his flat back having to climb all the way back up out of it but he's done it before remember in Bristol he was almost [Music] maybe back a won the grand national event [Music] grand national wins in a row yesterday however his car expired early and look at him go to the inside of run now Morgan is certainly showing some strength there and now as you said we'll be trying to catch up with Harrigan and Dale that we do he did there yeah okay everybody had better go down and talk to Jake and find out what sort of Springs they put beneath that beneath that Buick because that car it has indeed the rape Hill Farms Buick Jack Beebe own the but basically it's been raced dominated by Dale Earnhardt there is the interval between first brother second-place Harry Gant and the Morgan Shepherd car and now we Penn forward and show you the winner between first and second it's opened up just a little bit as Dale Earnhardt now with about a second lead on Harry Gant or live coverage of the trance 500 club Darlington to be back to the moment Parsons is in the pit he made an unscheduled pit stop but now gets back out there you can see the Darlington stripe on the right side of that car indicating that he's had contact probably with the outside wall in quarter number four a tough break for Benny Parsons who is running in the top ten as a matter of fact he was running singing let's go down to dick Berggren who's with Kenny Bernstein and penny Bernstein is Joe Ruttman car owner Kenny what is your situation [Music] but the toxins will change the Quaker State doing is just doing fine its handling as good as Joe break and this team indeed is running as well as this front all year and we'll be seeing Kenny Bernstein racing this year in IHRA events it will be televising for you on E Bernsen those serving that the capacity is car owner here this afternoon for Joe Ruttman who's firmly entrenched in third spot [Music] great March there on the left side of that car that indicates people had contact with [Music] that they get real close from shortly is right behind him [Music] out of the number three wouldn't be all that concerned if they saw that smoke at Bristol let us say you see a car here showing that sort of smoke working in the corners you know it like and you're following it that goes in your mind it goes in to remember to say [Music] rush up and try and pass them ernhardt car but it education the chassis is not really perfect and they can adjust upon that for major concern but if you're following a driver like that [Music] take them down my machine Mike Waltrip is the car that is being laughed at number 23 Hawaiian Punch Pontiac right away [Music] our car that is Ken Schrader's in number 91 [Music] Lacy's beginning to close beginning to close right there and all we've got a car like any trader [Music] temperaments down on the inside of the racetrack there was he's on the backstretch the cars still [Music] to get back to his pit area the question is one of the second [Music] as if he's going to make it [Music] Joey [Music] leader dog just the data they go by out on her way [Music] seventy-eight of it [Music] vada Carly party star the strike [Music] Eliot going BIOS by Betty Rusty Wallace Jimmy means carnival 50 food he'll end the race [Music] you see that old car weight on the inside that her heart will pool boy did he tell you how that happened there again [Music] the lead and possibly is racecar as the bribery [Music] three cars were deciding the dice or the position precisely the same moment though he was banged into it he got around although cats go they called no-man's land [Music] recent retirees Jody Ridley [Music] is the leader there second place [Music] late Harry Gant though [Music] then you've got to go deep in the trunk near the end of the race reaching for the bag of tricks worn it out a lot of these drivers including Dale Earnhardt will use everything they've got on a racecar this early why displayed to the leader Dale Earnhardt that signifies that halfway mark the Arbor [Music] hundred eighty-four lap been completed Dale Earnhardt's and Jill Bobby Allison fourth and Ricky Rudd in fifth position there's a lot more up for grabs today than just the winners part of the first course they made an announcement yet today that died guard racing has lost its position on the winners here it's for bristol to try and qualify well by withdrawing their entry here at Darlington terminated from the 1986 and that means that there is an additional while open the next driver or key [Music] $5,700 on each short track that's about $160,000 we see smoke coming off of both the lead machine and Mary [Music] [Music] ricky rudd that's mr. consistency [Music] with terry labonte the runner-up in the point standings being behind the wall Waltrip just loves to finish [Music] he said it's very difficult because you can't be the winner of the most racist spin and turn number 2 Rick Wilson [Music] the inside the racetrack but this will bring out a caution flag and here comes Earnhardt off of the fourth quarter now he is in quarter number three right now racing back to the yellow flag Wilson meanwhile his gun but here cars come hard to the checkered flag and the the yellow flag I should say not quite the chequered yet and so we made [Music] so we'll be back to see what happens here as the yellow was out for the set time this afternoon from the trend South mcafee trance out 500 at Darlington International Raceway and pit stops are being completed once again Benny Parsons is in for another time Bobby Allison pulling out right ahead of him the leaders sail Earnhardt Harry Gant Joe Ruttman Ricky Rudd and Bobby Allison all happen and four stops this is Benny second stop in the last few laps as he made a premature pit stop now Cale Yarborough is out there on the racetrack and will try to establish some radio communication with him [Music] Kayle this is ESPN we want to check and see how's your condition of the car now after that last round you had a chance to take a look so at Dale Earnhardt and how he's running as well as Harry Gant what's your pick right now who's the strongest between those do [Music] thanks Gail we'll stay in touch yellow is still out 191 last completed their Waltrip has come in or pitstop and he was in just a lap ago so he apparently has discovered something not to his liking tell you it could be one of several things Bob but a lot of times a driver will go out they have made a choice of tire stager with all their four tires they go out there and all of a sudden the driver decided there's something wrong and says hey let's go ahead bring it back in and put the right thing down we've got the time the tremendous amount of [Music] some problem with Darrell mid-race recap as we are just over the halfway point in this 367 lap 500-mile race from Darlie or Raceway [Music] the first half of the race was run in an hour and 51 minutes and of course Dale far and away has led most of the laps the average speed 100 34.76 8 miles an hour we've had four caution period or a total of 17 laps six litres eight lead changes and there are some of the cars that have dropped out of competition Jeff Bodines afternoon was over very early as a problem developed in that car just as the Green came out Dillon Allison Thomas Bouchard and boys also have dropped out of competition along with Sterling Marlin Terry Labonte Buddy Baker Doug heifer and Jody Ridley and Phil Parsons that's the situation as we complete it about half of the race and now the pace car is coming off of the race track and we are about to go back under green Harry Gant certainly in a challenging position to Dale Earnhardt [Music] Rusty Wallace would like very much to get the lap back he was alongside Dale Earnhardt when the green came out but unfortunately failed so rusty will have to wait for a while to try again to get the lap back so humble on the street [Music] Allyson are running side by side knows the tales of real tight competition now word harder has right away marry Dan and Ricky Rudd saying also right there close to here again the kudos have got to go to Ricky right fine race right from the drop of the green flag [Music] [Music] there's the interval between first and second and it's a tight battle for second between now he has been a nascar presents a trek back [Music] what Noah Danner is doing is not a new Olympic exhibition sport tire bouncing is just part and parcel to being out of pit crews now why the Truman bounce their tires well what they're trying to do is stretch the rubber so that they can build a proper amount of stagger into them for youth on race day jack has already decided after his broadcasting career is over he'll become a tire bouncer and this track fact has been brought to you by Levi Garrett chewing tobacco I'm after time the quality comes through we'll be back with more of our live coverage of the trends South 500 from Darlington International Raceway after these messages fire the wall in turn number four just as we come back Tommy Ellis loses control coming off a corner before hits the inside wall it keeps the car running though he hit it rather hard but really does not show all that much body damage now a couple of interesting developments had occurred just before this incident with Tommy Ellis Benny Parsons pulled in behind the wall and Darrell Waltrip has dropped down low on the racetrack Waltrip had dropped down low out of - was just crawling at a snail's pace down through three and four when and Tommy Ellis did his pirouette across the start/finish line to bring out the caution so in a way he's a break for Waltrip he'll be able to come into the pits he won't go a lap down and be able to see what's wrong with it there is Tommy Ellis limping under the back fit for service from the bloody parrot repair crew to see just what is wrong and what is salvageable I'm a number 18 car Ellis had a whale of a ride very reminiscent of the HP Bailey crash it really was but he apparently hit on a class that it really didn't damage the car too badly so the track crew comes out the pace car also will be pulling onto the race course ahead of the leader Dale Earnhardt and Joe Ruttman also Richard Petty and others are deciding that this is another good opportunity for them to make a pit stop but the leaders namely Dale Earnhardt Carrie can't ricky rudd bobby allison and others deciding to stay out there when our crew members gone inside a bruckman car trying to get to the jacking bolts in the back of the car they who had just now the reason they got to go in that way though is they can't get in through the side window on the driver's side they made the judgment on the left rear wheel with the wedge bolt and Joe Ruttman is back out on the race nobody continued on darrell waltrip machine and they're still gonna have to find out just what it was exactly that pulled him off the face you alluded to it Bob before that there was an awful lot of soot and debris on the back deck lid more unusual than compared to other cars there goes Waltrip and you can see it almost obliterating his sponsors name maybe Dick Berggren will be able to chat with junior Johnson or or possibly Jeff Hammond and find out what the problem is with car number 11 track crew is here on the main straightaway picking up pieces of debris left by Tommy Ellis when he hit the inside wall others making pit stop now include Bobby Allison who's running into top ten but Earnhardt can and rut continue to run out there and an interesting situation that we're going to be watching that there is Bobby Allison when she wiped off Morgan Shepherd car had been perhaps the fastest car on the racetrack just before this yellow came out and now he I think it's very possible that Morgan get his lap back you know Bob when you see a spinning car there's a lot more that goes on to getting people under control than just that you know you've got a lot of people all around you all around this facility many many people run a racing organization and a racing team not the least of which is a racing spotter with more on that near jack [Music] the next time you come to a Winston Cup race sit down on those 62 $5.00 seats check who's sitting next to you may not be a race fan it may be a guy like Benny or tell here who's the bowl of brothers racing team entry that's driven by Bobby Allison Benny what's your role as a spotter up here in the grandstand well Jackie what we try and do is make sure that Bobby has a safe race through the entire length of the race we know there's a lot of accidents going on he can't see the track like a turn one we're watching turn for Foreman so there's a good staff we're trying to tell exactly what that now you say we you're wired into Bobby you give them all the information but you've got a sidekick and tom Roberts he's monitoring the other race teams and NASCAR right that's absolutely right we have a scanner that tom Roberts uses that scans other race teams where we can know what kind of tire changes they're making and what NASCAR is also calling whether they're going back to three bar Bobby needs to stay out for a few more laps will let him know but DS drop a little bit on the conversations between earth knowing Bobby we're crossing and sent to Bobby there's a car up against the wall stay alone come on through okay obviously if you make it to Victory Lane the conversation on the radio on the cooldown laps a little more jovial [Music] [Music] and winning this race they learn hard I think has the better chance at this point and we have a crash-up in turn number two two cars are involved in it Ricky Rudd and Kari get 2nd and 3rd wipeouts and turn to how quick things can change in Darlington you could be running as strong as those two gentlemen were and have it all come to a crumpled heap at the bottom of turn number 2 and another situation that had developed while we were watching that Bobby Allison chief spotter piece Morgan Shepherd who was lined up right beside Earnhardt and it was running very strong when the green came out he punched the button and the car simply would not go and there he is in the pit area with the crew checking over the motor that's a tough break for those gentlemen because they were coming up but they said out of a ladder but they were showing some muscle what they showed in Atlanta when they want the Motorcraft 500 but it's obvious that it not going to be there day for victory in the hood we are seeing some interesting things developed here in the mid portion of this rate now we'll take a look at what happened over there and turn number two we've already come together on the high side one car that looks as if it's being Center punched by Ricky Rudd that's Harry Cantor miss Ashley t-bone the drivers were look at Alison's tip to the inside to get around the boat and that is exactly what we were talking about while watching that spotter beef I'm sure that his chief Bunner did indeed inform him of the trouble ahead Morris Don so in Darrell world Rusty Wallace Richard Petty Kyle Petty Joe Ruttman while Ricky Rudd is also out of his car and appears to be okay well a big disappointment for both of these drivers who really were running so well out there today second and third position getting together over in turn number one Harry Gant and Ricky Rudd crashing and bringing their hopes of a victory here today to an end both drivers are okay though as the ambulance moves away and goes back to its position some pit stops have been completed we'll be going back to green in a few moments with Dale Earnhardt to leader I've completed here in the trance out 500 as the race fans settle back for some more racing action that we'll be going to in just a moment we are yellow right now the leaders show Dale Earnhardt in the top spot but Bobby Allison now in second Joe Ruttman third Darrell Waltrip forth although Waltrip is having some problems Neil Bonnett in fifth position now Darrell has been in it stops here in the last view laughs let's go down to the pit area where dick Berggren has this updated report well Darryl Waltrip problem is really one they're still trying to diagnose they know they have a problem underneath the car somewhere at first they weren't sure they thought maybe the car was even on fire it was throwing sparks they thought they might have picked up some sort of debris so they're working on it here however is definitely the problem with Morgan Sheppard's car this is a rotor button this controls the timing and look at how that pin moves back and forth that pin has got to be absolutely fixed stable or the timing in the car gets fouled up they've got a new one of these on now so Morgan Shepherd ought to be back to the speed he was that before he had this problem and he was looking very strong but when the green came out for the time before this coming back to green from yellow he just simply lost power in that car now both Tim Richmond and Darrell Waltrip are on their apron of the racetrack and about to come in for another stop but what Waltrip's doing is trying to stay on the lead lap so we come in each time they jack it up look underneath their work as much as they can for 15 or 20 seconds and drop the jack and send them around again higher Jeff Hammond led team is set to swarm all over the Chevrolet driven by Darrell Waltrip Waltrip will just remain inside the car hold the wheel it is in the rear end area we noticed that they had the rear end greased out and available which led us to speculate that possibly maybe the rear end itself was beginning to come unglued as they say but so far they have done very little other than look so we're just taking a look at Darrell Waltrip talking back and forth to Jeff Hammond his crew chief letting him know and Darrell running in the top five deep post in the fourth position but this is not a good place pop for the fourth place man to be sitting on pit road well that's for sure there's Ricky Rudd's car on the hook being taken off of the racetrack again both Kant and rut are okay from there accident over in turn number one and you know a guy that's looking real strong here is Bobby Allison he certainly is in a good position to win this thing he's in a good position to win it and as I said early in the telecast 1986 is presented a totally different Bobby Allison that we saw in the last two years or so jovial he's happy have him bring to his step again he enjoys raising it doesn't seem to be as much of a chore even right down to testing and practice that Bobby's always out there and enjoying it let's go down to dick Berggren well it was Harry get I'm with Harry Gant he was involved in that incident Harry what caused the crash well you know lokar's decided to run you all the way down the corner and you try to get by them you know and they run into Hart they see you coming Iraq and they try to get by in front of you he'd go in real hard and flat off about three inches on me and I couldn't stop and I was going on bow down stop I figured he's going back going off and hold it down he moved up a little bit and I you know the big thing is all the car team in the back in there was when I went around Ricky Rudd got me there but there's a problem all day at the slow cars uh lap cars they won't let you go and you drive into the hole instead of crack that lets you down then they won't run you inside the fight or run you up on the outside or run you over for certain Wally you know they both claim to care today hits the drug pay for now today the drivers meeting was a little bit different everybody got to see the same film that the rookies usually see including all you veterans and when it was over everybody applauded didn't anybody learn anything everybody done what that faith they told him what to do this morning everybody's done real bad today yeah nobody's everybody out there's one duration nobody won't let you go by you know when you're trying to race to win a race other cars are just racing to be there they will erase the leaders all the time they don't want to let you go by nothing Harry Gant obviously disappointed he thought of it but Harry will be back another day certainly and in the winner's circle you can bet on that we'll be back with more from the trend South 500 after these messages we just went green once again the cars are on the backstretch and Neil Bonnett has gotten ahead of Earnhardt and so has Cale Yarborough here comes Yarborough side-by-side with Dale Earnhardt these three cars trying to get their lap back right now button and Elliott have got their lap back and tail is running these laps that those guys are running are just as important as the one to the checkered flag right now that they have anymore the event they've got to stay out in front of de l'heure to the inside of Cale Yarborough then backed up behind the Ford it says let's see what you do in turn three see if Bernard can pass him in Oh as Yarbrough gives us a little swirly on the fourth quarter and Bobby Hamilton also passing Cale Yarborough's let's go down to the pit area where dick Berggren is with the other driver involved that incident just a few moments ago ricky rudd well Ricky the car looks pretty well beat up a juicy mocha Kenny yeah I'm not too bad if they pull with the neck muscles I found a lot better shape than that race car right now yeah we're running well today though well we run second third Earnhardt was a little bit too tough for us and early goings we made some adjustments on the car to try to catch up to him and the adjustments that we made to the car going back the way we started and we started running got up the third was back up the third again right on Mary's back bumper when he got that up but that last car going into Bravo okay we've got a yellow flag on the speedway there is a car outside way on the racetrack and that is Jimmy means in car number 52 at the in turn number three now they're racing back to the yellow and it appears as [Music] here they come they crossed the stripe end yes indeed both bonnet and Elliot give their lap back [Music] so now we're going to have six cars on the lead lap instead of polar as both bought it ends and Bill Elliott will circle the entire racetrack and catch up to the rear of the field to be on the lead lap and have you noticed that Bobby Allison is hanging right in there on the back bumper of Dale Earnhardt as we see Jimmy we believe he's alright but he is being talked to he's about to climb out of the car we believe he's receiving some assistance but yes there is Jimmy means climbing out of the car and appears to be in good shape it occurred in turn number three Jack because he's already gone spinning up in the wall he does what's right tried to keep it up against the wall and it starts to come down right in front of everybody you've got the wheels locked up like you should points the nose of the Pontiac reversed steers and coming through stop that's tough for a guy like Jimmy B that is the one and only Super Speedway car of that gentleman home and the only 86 miles leave got me got Talladega coming up not one of the or well-fed enemies Jimmy pretty much damage the card you lose a lot of money Joe Ruttman back after a pit stop here comes Neil Bonnett also Bill Elliott in for routine maintenance while Dale Earnhardt stays out there on the racetrack to find update you on Jodie Wrigley situation he went behind the wall several laps ago but has been come back out onto the racetrack and rejoined the race for those guys that were in danger of going to lap down and with a game of short straws and it looked as if Cale Yarborough pulled the short one because this gentleman Bill Elliott got his flat back as did Neil Bonnett remember Cale Yarborough went down a lap and he's still down a lap behind a learner [Music] it goes back out on to the racetrack a star remains Racing will take this break and be right back to Darlington South Carolina well I'm with Richard Childress he owns the car that's in the lead right now driven by Dale Earnhardt and on this caution flag you've been looking at lap charts what do you see well it's doing about like we would anticipate it's a race face and picked up a whole lot started out around 30 to 50 we back to the Lexx the Lance and we ran 31 six start out level down around 32 22 you know we're about were envious insensate what did he telling you about the car is he happy with its performance guys did the car of doing what he wants to and you know it earlier he kind of backed off a little bit now he's running a lot of race to go how are you going to run from here to the checker oh you know will they been paid kind of the deal but you know we're just a little over halfway and we're just hoping we get those land three lamps in they've had trouble with those last three laps on three occasions they dropped out with only three laps to go so that's the work point illustration that they're really watching for that certainly was the case last weekend at Bristol when Dale was running up front and then all of a sudden with about three laps to go drop to the inside of the race track and fell out of competition although he did end up in sixth finishing spot in that valley Dale 500 last weekend at Bristol pace car is still on the race track he has led 202 of 224 laps in this race so you can see how very well that car has been running for Dale Earnhardt and afternoon we remain under yellow we'll get this break in and then we'll be right back just gone on at Darlington International Raceway in the trance now 500 Dale Earnhardt Bobby Allison his second [Music] tried desperately to gain his life back on that restart [Music] just took off from the rest of the field Alison [Music] right there with earn are not letting him out of his sight and just motoring around this place [Music] one thing about darling the last time outside of the top 10 won this race was this man Bobby Allison strong performance by Bobby this afternoon here at Darlington [Music] [Music] charge on the Winston Cup circuit Bobby Hillin also a driver for that team Bobby [Music] an accident over in turn number three you can see the oil dry that there in the high groove unturned River but their bike major [Music] burro Tim Richmond and Rusty Wallace are on laugh three laps down four laps down is Kyle Petty than fifth rather five laps down [Music] [Music] the xikar team that Bobby Allison used to run with has had its problems and we asked Bobby Allison to come in on I had a lot of good times a guard you know they felt that was the problem and Kyla you know I I haven't really and I'm sad to see that their problems [Music] I think it's a good time they came to the animals some day we'll all be able to sit on his friends again somewhere [Music] my car did not enter a car here at Darlington but word is that Willie tee-rrific [Music] again the tragedy that Bobby Allison alluded to with Tiger racing in particular years and they stood for quality competition they had drivers like [Music] the Winston Cup championship to the lunatic we're so long and then at the end of last year the ball seemed to come unraveled we saw Bobby leaves and Gary Nelson announced his departure then this year was Robert Yates leaving Drake's tax being announced in the driver for all of the racer from the TRW sponsored really dear it when they came to Bristol Tennessee look for those of us that have been around the [Music] brother Jim Gartner has been fired he's gone into business for himself the question that I have for bill Gardner is bill what are you up to what are you going to do this is a far cry from the quality Winston Cup entries that for so many years you presented that racetrack up and down [Music] Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarborough continue to run those two pale on the racetrack and behind Joe Ruttman is racing for position with Walter will all Christmas being posted two thirds of the ruckman in sport and they're both having their hands full getting around this man Cale Yarborough in the world to get around but that guy darrell waltrip he'd like to get around him so he can go race for that second the great rack that will allow [Music] experiencing a problem in that race Hill Farms Buick but the problem is corrected and Morgan trying to make the best of it you heard Harry can't allude to the fact that lap traffic was a problem here today well it's always a problem at Darlington and some of this lap traffic is very bad now they go around one of the cars Bobby way wax machine that's a slow lap car but Morgan Shepherd is a lapped car number 47 Cale Yarborough is a lapped car they've got enough speed that makes the drivers on the lead lap [Music] take the hair off their head they're so frustrated because they can't get bothered a lot of difference between the lap cars of Cale Yarborough and those of for instance County sailor that they're passing on the backstretch right now speed difference between those two types of cars but the faster ones are the ones that cost you precious valuable time [Music] more than jeopardy one waltrip Steve Kaylee Arbor in case you did not watch the Formula One race this morning that we presented from Spain here on ESPN Ayrton Senna edged out Nigel Mansell for the win man [Music] first one take a run [Music] Manesh front breathe that we presented for you here on ESPN and we have a problem as the car spins and hits the wall as Morgan Shepherd and Rutland goes with him to the inside of the track lap traffic what are they saying exactly the problem Morgan Shepherd a lapped car spinning to avoid that lapped car the guy that was running in the fourth position bad luck fight Java I don't think he's gonna lose he probably has damaged that pardon [Music] Morgan Shepherd farming park to get me out they into the backstretch here's the replay these Shepherds up into the wall all by himself he begins to spin and taking the bird of action in Joe it's on the binders goes downstairs rides the elevator down spins it around Richmond just shoots the eye of the needle and get through but there he gets inside retaining welcome now let's watch Rucker let's study him specifically Rodman and there's Richmond they've already seen the accident Ruttman his turning card left he got and look at Richmond what a great job by Richmond turn left now go right Jimmy come right through it he's unscathed Ruttman is dead didn't think what as none made the pitstop Yetta staying out there Dale Earnhardt is in for a pit stop this is the ninth caution period of the afternoon and there is the body damage suffered by that Morgan Shepherd car and it limps home hard back on to the racetrack harried and by the way is back on flag came out Harry went back out on the racetrack and he is matching the number on the side of his car 33 laps down well it kind of looks like a Darlington car about this time pit crews peel all the sheet metal off but he's gonna be a lot of laps down he'll have his hands full driving something like that too a spin has brought out a caution flag has been involving Morgan Shepherd and Joe Ruttman but Tim Richmond makes it through we'll be right back coverage of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continue tonight and the Philadelphia Flyers take on the New York Rangers that will be live at 7:30 here on ESPN boy do we have a tremendous line-up of hockey games for you right through the finals of the Stanley Cup here on ESPN tonight Philadelphia in New York at 7:30 the green comes out on the trend south 500 once again here we go back to racing Darryl Waltrip is the leader [Music] Walter coos down low coming out of turn they are side by side trying to pick up that position Yarborough needs to get back on the lead lap go to the inside bring a flat through there somebody has to give Richmond did look at Earnhardt he was just waiting for something to happen now inside of Tim Richmond as they come off of the corner it is Waltrip still leading Yarborough they're in second position but is a lap down and look at bill Elliot who is right in the hunt now all of a sudden right behind Dale Earnhardt look at the strength that that bill is showing here along with Bobby Allison remember bill gained his lap back so he is on the lead laner with a four we've gotten the car dial did much nicer than the way it started Earnhardt goes to the inside of Tim Richmond good run there for [Music] Yarbrough is gonna try it one more time [Music] he looks inside Waltrip is sideways is he going to spill he saves it back on the tail end of the lead lap now we have to hope for a caution if he does he moves back into the lead lap with the leaders boy that is as close you can come the spinning especially here at Darlington and gathering it in and saving it unbelievable job [Music] well but now Yarbrough is going to have to contend let's watch Yarbrough makes the move downstairs he may have sent that Walters was out of control because he gave an awful lot of room it slid by him go ahead tail into that car the right side came very close to touching the wall and if he had and he would have undoubtedly gone out of control now this looks like a cage wrestling match we ran out of here between Yarborough [Music] WrestleMania for before this thing is done because Earnhardt wants to keep Yarborough a lap down he remembers in the southern 500 a year ago when there [Music] to challenge for the victory you just got to admit that [Music] side by side with cale yarborough out of the fourth quarter they come down the straightaway Cael [Music] he had the windshield post up bail had to let him get by my questioned if he was going to what he had to Joe Ruttman who was involved in that spin over the backstretch with Morgan Shepherd is six let's get more on that dick [Music] well Joe Ruttman definitely got himself in trouble this is part of the aerodynamic nose julik teams tried to get on their card that came off shore up new tires on the car beat on the sheetmetal new Kenny Bernstein was just in this pit area shaking his head say we can't seem to get a break this doesn't happen in drag racing Joe Ruttman is unlucky is I'll tell you Bob he is so unlucky to see he bought a suit with two pairs of pants he burned a hole in the jacket Alan Kulwicki raping the wall out in turn number two but he keeps going so no yellow [Music] your honor you know something ought to be said about Alan doing it the hard way doing it so and that is the only race car that the team one racecar he's brought it to every race providing the sponsorship help but Alan Kulwicki doing all the mechanical work as well as trying to learn all these Winston Cup tracks meanwhile up front and Phil Dale Earnhardt leading Cale Yarborough and with a couple of lap cars you know who looks better and better remembering a that spirited run to the back Richmond we started to show the more muscle things to be a little better [Music] whatever was wrong with that carving parrot sufficiently to keep Richmond in the heart [Music] a lot of excitement there is a l'heure now going to the high side of Bobby way back in car number [Music] laughs now regular followers [Music] Dale Earnhardt that they've known was right standing position right to the end with Jeff [Music] went right on down the line he always been there but he's yet to be victorious Neil Bonnett and Bobby Allison running together on the racetrack [Music] position here Bobby Allison in third inch are number 22 and Neil in car number 12 that a nice performance by me there he is appearing accident lat I think we've got big burgers in Jellico darrell waltrip star dick well I was I was Jeff Hammond he's crew chief or Darrell Waltrip Jack Jeff and you've got this squared away is the problem underneath that car salt down lovely we got it solved as far as you know we're going to finish the race I think this will be a problem right now we really worked over the last you caution flag and you guys didn't get the job guys they cleaned up fun amazing I've heard about that in fact we're fitting to go the rest away how well could you run the rest [Music] we got a few little things left here dude - right we got a couple good since tired you know we're getting ready to go race here - my snake Oh 75 80 laps I believe we may have a little bit laughter what was the problem with this bar there does seem to be a lot of oil on the back deck we had a rear improperly [Music] third member so we gotta meet there and clean it off and resealed it on the outside four great Korean [Music] rearend gasket on Darrell Waltrip has been fixed he's ready to run all right and Darrell is trying desperately to keep the position from don't have a good battle for the lead at this point but look at this 2nd 3rd 4th and right behind steel but it is simply Bill Elliott and these guys are going at it tooth and nail out [Music] Junior Johnson Neil Bonnett one of the job too go to the inside backs off Wow - looks to the inside again around Bobby [Music] and a good point to bring out here when we talk to Bobby Allison yesterday in the day before [Music] running alongside his son Jamie on the racetrack and he admitted that yeah that's the problem but is almost as bad running with Neil podded because he considers Neil such a good friend almost a brother Bobby comes in now and they will go to work changing the rubber on the right side of the race car but he was burning a lot of rubber in the corners even smoked the tires especially in turns one and two the crew is changing those right side good years they drop the jack let's see if they're going to do all four all right they're changing all for now that could be an indication that they have got any problem of vibration somewhere [Music] when you have to do it under dream but is what you have to do when you think know where it is the situation with back out on the racetrack [Music] we stopped moving now an alabama driver [Music] five cards now on the lead lap there is the leader of the contest Dale Earnhardt completing lap 260 we'll make up the trends out 500 burger in brackets Carolina and the being led by Dale Earnhardt there is Richard Petty [Music] 23 going to the inside of bill talk briefly about the neck race that Richard Petty is wearing and perhaps we can expand [Music] actually as I said to you before it contraption dick Berggren actually discovered it down Richard Hellmuth they've attached a ring to it much like you cooked to your dog with a dog leash they've run that wire down across a roll bar then down across the side roll bar and attach it to a spring level so actually they could they can Islands attention the amount of the Richards head can make the only concern that I've got is resolved wires and with the way it connected to the top of his head god if Richard should ever happen Quigley he's gonna have to remember to unpinch his seatbelt disconnect the radio wires and actual running out there and be the override by the wire that still attached [Music] running in tenth position here in the Trenchtown 500 and the [Music] Richard coming out of the race bar used to be [Music] the car and then again in Bristol we've got to remember he had a separate shoulder begin the stages and it takes a long time to come back from that especially a place like Bristol where you your shoulder Joe Ruttman is about to go a lap down there it is Dale Earnhardt moving to the inside of Joe Rock at the end of the Joe Ruttman goes now only four cars remain on the lead lap now it is Tim Richmond and Joe Ruttman battling for position and Tim goes into theft go back to things [Music] those early problems because since he got those problems corrected he has very the only shots of Henry [Music] the backrest and he come in the front bezel [Music] but see if we can catch up on radio before he goes on book say failed at the DSPs what happened [Music] lately beginning to get discouraged about than Jeff Bodines race today though the pole sitter who broke the track record in qualifying [Music] only a couple of flats was that card failed on him was a [Music] the race [Music] Terry Gannon Ricki one who were battling for second position on the tractor they crashed [Music] also was dropped out of competition fondue shard and so on but Dale Earnhardt is [Music] I would say before the 28 car dropped out actually what [Music] and hopefully get in front of our heart and hope for an additional cost that would be the last and put it back on the lead lap in he was a lap down earlier but has made it up let's go down to dick Berggren news with Stan Elliot well Dan you fellas qualified 21st with your running in trouble with our cider and the way the cars getting around combination together pick up okay because we got some stops to run real good some stuff - don't run so good and we're trying to figure this thing out what's your chance that you can get this car going [Music] compete with Earnhardt but we sure gonna give it a try as Dan Elliott Bill Elliott brother all right Elliott remains on the lead lap of last week's winner Rusty Wallace he just made a pit stop is a nice position to last for the rear [Music] they learn mark and Tim Richmond on the racetrack and you can see the tire smoke once again coming from both those cars and Richmond is talking waiting for the opportunity maybe game now go racing we have less than 100 laps to go in the tram South 500 Bobbe way wack in car number 74 once again is being lapped by the leader [Music] right out just a little bit now with only four [Music] lots of things have happened so far we'll be right back high above the main straightaway here at Darlington South Carolina our vantage points from the broadcast booth and we welcome you back to the trance out 500 where 278 laps have been completed and the lead continues to be held by Dale Earnhardt Jack arute with me here in the broadcast booth and dick Berggren is working 210 area for us today the situation remains the same with Earnhardt leading there is Bill Elliott who is running in fourth place still on the lead lap ahead of him this at number 27 our guards Pontiac driven by Rusty Wallace plenty of race time left and you heard Anne Elliot talking about [Music] they get that dialed in we have a couple of more cautions and there's no telling what we're going to have for a finish here rusty wallet right in front of it there's Tim Richmond look at Richmond it is trying to get around he was trying to get by and still keep Dale Earnhardt in his sight you know and waiting for that yellow it's obviously what Richards doing he just playing a cat again our way a rather Richmond way out of the groove here on the bank [Music] the racetrack [Music] by the time he arrived and look at him ride that car he was broad sliding there in quarter number four trying desperately to say many people that say that did which way they've got a [Music] whew racetrack delivered here at drivers say [Music] that I ever heard say I really like Darlington he enjoyed it he said you really can feel what the car is doing better she did you bring for drivers in his racecar [Music] wiped out staying up with Dale Earnhardt [Music] some comments on that situation today well Jack Richmond yesterday was talking about racetrack in general that he liked and he says that when he used to run his prints are his favorite track with Terre Haute sprint car track because he does have a tendency to choose a topic or Vegas best finish here at Darlington by the way was a second-place finish in the southern back in 1984 [Music] in court and nerd also on the lead lap in second position is Darrell Waltrip in number 11 Darrell Waltrip the points leader he wants another Winston tough championship but he believes that consistency will [Music] as your successful jr. Johnson caused you to give up on the idea of starting and running your own team well we're at a point in our relationship where we have to decide we have to weigh each other the good points and bad points this the end of our contract here and we're starting to talk a little bit I don't know what's going to happen we've had a lot of success and I enjoy driving his car or anything I've ever done it may be the talking to do and if I don't then it died yeah so he is when the air is till 1 1987 we'll bring them Bob don't forget this is the end of the three-year cycle for the to be considered Darrell Waltrip has been one never to like a two-car opera [Music] they're all answered in very nice [Music] there not only in 1987 but 88-89 right down to the time and possibly goes into racing himself and the junior Johnson to that will be you would [Music] sorry it's obvious Bob that one of the things realizing underneath both exterior Darrell Waltrip and jr. Johnson are exactly alike they're sensitive people they care about things and they just show it a little bit differently there but their hearts are almost exactly the same and they both are winners there's no question about that so while work goes on in the Joe Ruttman pit we'll take another break and be back with more live action from Darlington South Carolina back in the tread down 500 in Darlington South Carolina where nominate this race twenty-five laughing and although as you can see the car is perhaps not handling the way Dale wanted to and down a little bit on that [Music] corner excursion nevertheless hurt aren't able to maintain a breath or healthy lean here [Music] take a look at the lake in Richmond is running Richmond makes it look like it's therapy in New York facility the slide decks are out of turn three and four get ready for the run down to the start/finish line but Dale Earnhardt is just running like you down there [Music] right ahead as Dale Earnhardt within a few car lengths [Music] right now with only one down in sixth position but we'll soon two laps down a lot of racing left to go a caution flag would just absolutely mash things up there's a couple AFSA stand up man five races last year I decided to move south he moved down to North Carolina Marc Staal ofö lived in North Carolina called San Diego California is home another these guys couldn't qualify the first step they had the second day that's the rule at Darlington because the first day you go from the rookie Orion judged by your gear these guys have to be passed by the men become regulars before they [Music] mechanical whirring would conquer that no walk [Music] 85 they called super cat hard luck describe this guy Joe Ruttman he's with dicker well Joe the day is over what has happened to your racecar involved as a 47 car over on the 3rd - apparently ruptured the radiator core through the water and we've got an Ursa through the race we we were trying to think she's gonna run the Bentley hood and they get a good finish that I think it's optimistic I'm real optimistic how well this you know wait for safe cars running and I think that's there later on the year I'm really looking forward to more races do that so many things happen to you where you've been the innocent victim are you beginning to feel snake-bitten this year well I don't I don't believe in that sort of thing you know I look at this car as being green and I enjoy money and in the Quaker State number one and that's where I want to put the car [Music] Joe Ruttman statement that indicates that he gets down on himself or down on the crew he's very the mythic always and [Music] this year sometime before the end of the season is over Joe Ruttman is going to win a Winston Cup great another rookies still out there is Rick Wilson from Bartow Florida the captain Cody's vocal vo Rick's got some experience on this track yesterday by finishing fourth in the Grand National race he's currently 13 Rick is taking over [Music] some help and he's one of those and Dale Earnhardt continues to set the pace with 298 laughs we got 69 more to go in the trend south 500 we'll be right back with more action the leader Dale Earnhardt is right on the back bumper of Bill Elliott in car number 9 thing to put bill if he does we will have three cars on the lead lap because Eliot is currently running in fourth we watch him go into turn number one Eliot has not been as far as the lead is concerned competitive although the format hasn't run all that badly so we heard dick Berggren talk adjusted and adjusted on it but it looks like they've not adjusted when putting him a lap down he did that just like and now three cars on the lead lap those three the - besides Earnhardt the jr. Johnson cars Darrell Waltrip second and Neil Bonnett running in third [Music] now you're rubbing off those right rear tires by the way that going all of that tire smoke I'm going to eventually catch up with you caution flag they finally go down to the fabric [Music] bill Elliot has not led today but Ricky Rudd has so afford does get credit poorly one lap under caution but have been the only for too [Music] this is car number 22 he currently is in six pots now people here [Music] his sights set on Neil bottom they're only about a quarter of a straightaway apart so it wouldn't be that much longer before Earnhardt could measure up take a shot at Neil Bonnett [Music] Oh [Music] and the streak to twelve different winners because both Earnhardt and the darrell waltrip have eleven races though bottom is right now one that may extend that three last week hard to the wall at Bristol but not too far behind him as the leader they learn art [Music] darrell waltrip running in second position and another Waltrip is out there on still in the race and that is Mike Walker's car number 23 Michael give the Year honor looky at this racetrack because he is 2 feet in the southern 500 he is driving dick there star spawn survival genuinely excited about getting out here and getting the track time that he needs to be able to learn about these racing facility you know he's got that Pontiac and really he is kept in those you know the one thing is really we know that everywhere they go Darrell does take some time to go over and talk to Mike he says one of the difference between when I came up and when Mike beam up is the fact that I've gotten into Mikey's fire periodically this year and told them what's wrong with well here's Jeff originally talk so much about him but he's back in the pit by the way this is Mike Walters best performance ever innovation of ranges that career fatigue has been an 18th this year he had a 19th place finish in Atlanta he is currently 12 and not doing all that bad at all for being changed on the right side of Tim Richmond Folgers car [Music] was that the right side [Music] great calibers that but you're using the break here and there is Neil Bonnett going a lap down to the field though Dale Earnhardt is threatening to lap the entire field here at Darlington holding what four car now on the lead lap with Dale Earnhardt and that is Darrell Waltrip not surprise me at all this Walter put a lap down his race and they'll last the entire field bobby allison though going back around Arnold the inside of the racetrack they're in quarter number one and here is Bill Elliott coming in for his dog for playbill million green we have 309 lat it out of 367 [Music] final one and Earnhardt is also coming in for his wide open stomp of the afternoon here he is [Music] this stop so they can go to work and let's go to dick Berggren - brand-new sticker tires for the outside of this car I just generally the left-hand stop don't put on set of tires than having you they know how they're gonna grow [Music] 18.2 second pit stop for Dale Earnhardt and away right we'll resume now in the trance 500 we'll be right back in just a moment we welcome you back to Darlington South Carolina and the trend South 500 things brought to you by Ford and your Ford dealer have you driven a Ford lately and by ficky they're America's favorite workflow but who says you have to work in them and by a farmer all it's the finishing touch every time you wash your car 313 laughs completed in the trend South 500 the lead held by Dale Earnhardt second place is the number 11 car driven by Darrell Waltrip Kyle Petty comes in for a pit stop dick Berggren alluded to the fact that they went with sticker tires brand new tires on Dale Earnhardt your leader could be that they had to go that [Music] burning tires darrell waltrip is the leader of at the moment because he has not made his final pit stop although this man Dale Earnhardt Willis was the lead once again when her a Waltrip does come in for his pit stop there in the narrow running down but he is one more circuit is 1.33 six mile racetrack as you can see Ayrton Senna was the winner of the Spanish run breathe and for you this morning at 10 o'clock with Jackie Stewart and with Larry Hoover American League baseball for New York Milwaukee Cleveland has the lead over Detroit in the seventh inning Minnesota in the [Music] we continue to bring you the family Conclave [Music] being a pit stop by Darrell [Music] the track it will be an indication he's coming in for you see come around the corner is slowly then he can do the shoot to shoot down to the end of pit road for everything you Johnson people be ready to service before the final time they hope [Music] Walter whiting newest top of the junior Johnson get the crew going to work on that machine right-side tires goes away and he's on the backstretch just entering turn number three as Darrell move now Oh on the racetrack just ahead there are welcome the momentum now is going to be up almost the half lap we form they learn our everything is gone just perfect everything that they had done they've not had any major chassis problems he's really come to the track too tough to tame with a little care to be able to get the job done Bob flawless performance by Dale Earnhardt and the question that he is asking himself probably and there we are [Music] 500 mile he has had a problem doing that in the races so far this year last weekend giving out on with just relax very wealthy a situation like that near this afternoon although ernhardt certainly deserves the wind because of his flawless performance here this afternoon an important point to make is that if ernhardt were to win here [Music] but it would also start again because they started the streak back in part until last year as Harrigan visits the pit look at how bad that car full wallet keep em away the grand American and a modified but it still run is concerned with getting many Winston Cup points as possible over 300 built entire smoke off that car but it's not a serious situation [Music] well there's Jamie McDuffie in car number 70 the ruble courtier Pontiac JD not a rookie to this type of racing by any stretch of the imagination [Music] a regular at the same time recently speaker than having [Music] comes weekend and week for an independent you don't get your tires for free you don't get your bodies for free everything you paid cash for each one of those about $160 it's getting expensive for JD to come weekend and we go very evidence that JD has a lot of great bands out he has made the invitational that would be telling you about in just a few moments as we continue to cover the trend south [Music] completed out of 367 in the trance out 500 Dale Earnhardt is the leader Darrell Waltrip is running in second spot Bobby Allison is third that wall curve is the [Music] laughs right ahead of Dale Earnhardt right now is Bobby Allison there's a good close up of bail at the move through her we snow rates will be coming up during the month of May it's a feel selected by the fans NASCAR fans selected the 14 car starting field for the Atlanta Invitational and there were some surprises Bobby Allison Arrington Baker Hillen McGuffey means Parsons Richard Petty Richmond Ruttman speed Trevor boys and Dave Marcus but the biggest surprise was maybe the top vote-getter we got over a hundred and thirty thousand votes the man who received one hundred and thirty two thousand votes and will start on the pole the guy who started off leading the balloting and continued throughout the deal driving his 7-eleven with brothers for Kyle Petty Kyle Petty was flattered to say the least by the fans respond it's a real honor you know to have him the fans vote for a deal like this and and to be able to get the most votes against people like my father and Benny Parsons and you know Bobby the guys have been around a long time so you know I think it's pretty big deal for independent drivers like Darrington boys means and JD McDuffie simply making the field was an honor in your wildest dreams did you ever envision that on May 11th you'd be turning a wheel at Atlanta in the Atlanta Invitational I feel like I've made enough friends and fans over the years to where I would and I really appreciate them coming out and voting for the 100 lap three hundred thousand dollar Atlanta Invitational takes the green flag on Sunday May 11th companion to the Winston the $500,000 winners race and you'll see it all here on ESPN we're very excited about that racing doubleheader that day in Atlanta the Winston and then the invitational ships provide for an exciting day of racing here on ESPN and there's Kyle Petty the top vote getter in the Invitational he is ninth here in the tramptown 500 and you know the rest of those those Gators are going to have that was a great workout set up for the great have to worry about going bad go for the hundred miles qualify for position only the pole position is locked in as you can see Kylie in the Earnhardt is the leader of the race and darrell waltrip the only other car on the lead lap man Earnhardt's advantage over [Music] about 3/4 of the lap [Music] danger of losing the lead unless something goes wrong with a car there's bill Elliott [Music] off the pain I've been a good weekend for bill what has ever needed they sure I'm sure they've radioed in and said look I need such-and-such a park that he sent over there and get the park [Music] initiate [Music] still trying to gain some experience on the road courses for the Eldar series that will be coming up he is competed in several entry doing quite well in the matter you know he wanted to burn Riverside California he's been an accomplished road horse racer everything he's been in competition good on a dick burger he didn't have an update on the condition while Elliot's problem is under the hood woman new rotor wasn't sitting right there dan DeLeon is just come back [Music] they are removing the air cleaner of this automobile [Music] that's above the second or third time this today we've seen this problem add to it the problems we saw on the grand national there are awful lot of electrical problems going down [Music] a lot of competitors here these distributors are required by racing rule very very on the street shall we run about 30 to 30 300 rpm at 55 miles an hour here you turn as much as 8,000 are it's also a much bigger factor on the race he really puts a lot of strain on the electrical business I remember in North Wilkesboro where we going next week Darrell Walker with distributor wires [Music] for the year makes though as hard [Music] more position from Tim Richmond there so Bobby passing Tim at the end of the straightaway and going forth time last year was on his way to a humble well he is however back out on the racetrack [Music] really slow down Bill Elliott is going back out Richmond most likely you'll be coming into the pitch shortly but there's something the domination of the trance out 500 at Darlington continues for Dale Earnhardt we'll be back with more after defending Stanley Cup Series between the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers tied at one game apiece he'll resume action tonight live on the envy at 7:30 one last night though now leave it there another one the Flyers we trying to even the series tonight at 7:30 we resume our coverage of the Stanley [Music] they learn hard until the leader here Bristol's appearances are so was last weekend North Wilkesboro was next weekend a lot of people though think of the short track Bob because I couldn't fault you it takes a lot of [Music] boots on the drivers and you really have to eat your head like tourism 22 degrees in Korean we've been racing now for and I would think that the fatigue would be tremendous here is Tim Richmond's car coming with a black higher [Music] the wheel what it is they got an inner liner it is flattened on the way up I can see him [Music] we're changing the [Music] at the moment is running in the cockpit but it was at least until pit stop Rusty Wallace also with [Music] the track right behind no matter where you look everybody's had a problem you look down the list of the current leaders bonnet had his share of problems Waltrip we alluded to the problems there we talked to Jeff Hammond we it did everybody except one driver they learn are leading it's been just a quality afternoon for Richard Childress and their entire team nothing has gone wrong with Earnhardt car and what you watch [Music] taken around the racetrack watch how to smooth that car it goes up around HB Bailey he puts it up on the high side then he is induction down below you can bring it back around very little waffle very little jump that's compared to HP Bailey's car which wanted to change lanes maybe twice or three times real estate they come [Music] - and again can run right up against the rail without any problem whatsoever he may be burning the tires ernhardt started his race sign to grow number two right alongside Benny Parsons Dale was the fourth fastest qualifier and about oh and Mike Waltrip is experiencing a problem Mike's going into the pits on the back pouring from that car and we had told you earlier that it's a tough race there however taking the foot off the car and looking in the engine compartment a lot of smoke coming from it's gotta be a ticket appointment for young Mike Walters you know one of the things that most people don't know the pieces of time living with Richard Petty before he went Winston Cup granddad on racing when he was driving for the what they call the baby grand International sedan series he lived with Richard moved out Richard said I got a Walter and they really took them under his shoulder and we tar the wall and turn three [Music] but Bobby why magnet counted the concrete in turn number three and some fire engine compartment up that race car way wax gets us to the inside on the apron and is trying to unwrap the belts and get out of there before the fire threatened him physically and here he come way back is above the car appears to be okay but this is going to bring out another caution flag [Music] the tough break for a guy like Bobby lay waxy because he doesn't have that many cars that's an old car that he brought here because they didn't have ready for competition in Darlington and now he's crashed at it you can see the superior piping special number 74 and you know if you look over there I mean by the Opera window body carries on all of his cars from the Stang all things are possible now he was able to get out of that racecar without it the third turn and so far no health has come toward it now tow truck does get into position here is Dale Earnhardt fitting and Earnhardt is sliding good stopping it this sides they're putting on four tires and this time all four tires are scuff tires and they have run already and so they know exactly what [Music] there he goes from what should be his final pit stop it has been his day and it would really be too bad if something were to happen in the final laps of his race as he is experienced [Music] this printout 500 win but it's not over yet you know he had worked for and earned to win in the Daytona 500 and when it was over it went to Geoff Bodine he worked for and earned a victory let us say at Bristol Tennessee when it was over the alia car seat with Rusty Wallace and Victory Lane you know it doesn't have anything to do with it how much you work and how much you earn it what it has to do with is who company beneath the checkered flag here comes the flood car the junior Johnson machines and the opponent peels off into his pit area while Darrell Waltrip continues on down the pit road and now comes to a stop while the crew begins to change the tires on the right side the air inches at work will they change on the left side of the car yes they will and also a member of the pit crew goes inside the car on the right and makes them cap the adjustments there that is very difficult to hear and there goes Waltrip now the question is can he catch Hart it could be that the tire setup is right for Daryl now and he can make a race out of this he'll be right back in just a moment to find out we are in our tenth caution period of the afternoon in the trance out 500 from Darlington International Raceway in South Carolina the most recent incident and Bobby way back he hit the wall up in turn number three but is okay they're still cleaning up the track over there the car is off of the race track and so we should be going green with in too many laps now Dale Earnhardt continues to lead this race but Darrell Waltrip is running in second position and earlier this weekend we talked to Dale do Darrell you're leading the points and I believe you were quoted not too long ago as saying that you now believe that it's consistency that you want to go for rather than the winds is that a fair or a quote well we want to finish all the races if you do that then you'll win a championship or you the Winston Cup championship in 1986 4,500 that's a lot of money $550,000 in November is a whole lot better than 30 or $40,000 new the season so we look forward to the championship and the money is great and one thing I might say there should never be in the course of a season any event any race or anything that's more important than being the champion that should be the number one priority that should be where the emphasis is that's where the money should be and I think it's gonna exchange it now this year it's better 550 for the winner might be a million next year but that's the way it should be and consistency has been the word for Darrell Waltrip this year he was third in Daytona fifth at Richmond fifth at Rockingham fourth in Atlanta third at Bristol and is running second here this afternoon we would like to update you on Bobby way back the official word is that he is okay after that incident up there in turn number three the track is clear the green flag is out again with 356 lat completely we have 11 laps to go in the [Music] well if it starts any indication darrell waltrip is picked up considerably in the speed department because he's holding on to Dale Earnhardt [Music] remember these two guys went at it the old situation with just a few laps ago [Music] go right now yeah quickly Earnhardt is making good use of those used tires that they put on by run your children's in the beginning to pull away just wait the weight even though it's 10 laps ago you know one of the guys that has done a very steady job this afternoon is Richard Petty Teti is two laps down but he is running in fifth position there is Richard to the inside of the racetrack in the to be a real feather in Richards calf because he has indoors of fatigue and on the body here this afternoon and run well although right up there with the leaders he's sandwiched between second and third Walter the second there's Teddy a lap down but he's keeping up with them but nobody's feeding us of Dale Earnhardt now diving to the inside of the racetrack alongside Richard Petty and Neil Bonnett Richard now Tim Richmond also comes along to the inside of the racetrack panting Richard Petty as I've said Bob rafting is large here but you've got bonnet and Walter with clear sailing in front of them maybe they can use the trap just a little bit of head Egan's out of the way a Bobby Allison gets by maybe they can use the dry and gobble up some of that real estate let's see if he'll find it like this they right behind is me mate he is running all by himself two laps down [Music] rugby Wallace and the number 25 car of Tim Richmond are sickening seven than they are richard is built-in [Music] and third but they [Music] nevertheless that is a very good run for Neil Bonnett ballesteros leading the winning and petty is in the wall in the backstretch Oh just when we were complimenting him on such a great Drive something happens and petty hits the wall of the backstretch unbelievable unbelievable so close to the end five laps from the end of this crash occurred the car inspired the motor trying to put it into gear is actually looking for a place to put it right now is just a big way down the backstretch throws it into reverse every time [Music] take a look at it fortunate here's the replay the tale and he's already begun in pirouette third [Music] took a pretty good ride but didn't really hit the wall very hard it appears here he comes into the pit area and with four laps ago now we could conceivably in this race under caution oh and I would hate to see that because right now if they would go back to maybe one or two green flag laps we could see a sprint car type fini Penny's crew is working on the right side of the car there really didn't too much into it they hardly respected in fact [Music] I'm certain that they are and now Richard goes three laps down and as Rusty Wallace and Tim Richmond now Richard is now down to seven position and on the same lap as Tim and rusty well they'll come around now and there will be one two laps to go I believe this will complete lap 364 so they'll be three more laps to go and the real question is will they end under caution and you can be sure that Junior Johnson's crew is looking at the starter as is Richard Childress this crew I'm sure Childress is true would like to see it end under the yellow they'd like to see the one to go signal this time by and that gonna take yet yes sir there or lap until green and so there will be two laps of green and you can bet that Darrell Waltrip is going to let it all hang out remember Richmond Virginia first and second the names were Waltrip and Earnhardt grandma would you keep the pocketbook because these last two laps they're going to be wildly it's gonna be Earnhardt and Waltrip once again and lurking in the shadows Waltrip teammate Neil Bonnett who is running third [Music] in fourth position is Bobby Allison they will watch that and see there's the tough question is Neil Bonnett when he he's down on the inside is he just stay out of the throttle and let Earnhardt and his teammate go race for the win we can't do too much of it he's got to worry about Bobby Allison appropriating his position now he begins to stand on the gas and pull away here we go the green is going to come out on lap 365 two laps ago is this Brit race Earnhardt and Waltrip I'm trying to hold them off downstairs see how everybody went to the high side to try and get around I chased him down as Walter but Earnhardt still got him off a lot of muscle Bob bonnet leading Alison for third place now Bobby goes inside of Neil on the backstretch can he pull off the pass at the end of the backstretch yes Alison takes over a third spot oh no the restart move could have cost bonnet third position here they come for the white flag one more left to go Dale Earnhardt is on the [Music] [Music] we continue to watch the battle for third also behind a day or it is still Bobby Allison intern [Music] Bobby they come off of quarter number four [Music] on the main straightaway and accept the checkered flag and win finishes second Bobby Allison Durden [Music] this long race has come to an end and a do you think it was a long race for you what about the alert are all the races that he's been in and there they are congratulating each other Waltrip and Earnhardt waving to the fan it's been a long time for Dale learn our Earnhardt last his last victory came September 22nd 1985 he's the guy that started the 11 phases 11 races so we still have an 11 great streak intact but we start all over now because they're all as you said started this week back in September the win at Martinsville Dale Earnhardt led 332 of the 367 lat just some indication of how dominant he was here this afternoon at darling he knew finally was as well prepared as that car has been each and every time it's been presented to in Speedway that a victory was forthcoming at any moment he did it today and he did it fine fashion and in a place that you really have got to had your act together to even hope to be victorious she not only headed back together he had written the book and aside from just a little bit of paint scraped off the body on the left side of the car that car [Music] woman here like they learn we'll be back in a moment at Darlington is over and the winner is Dale Earnhardt let's go to Victory Lane and dick Berggren well Dale - congratulations fired Dale Earnhardt a new definition of dominating Darlington you seem to really have it hooked up today well we worked off a good here last year and you know we work off a harvest children's and all the crew I like saying good reason Wrangler and all the people that worked real hard to put their money behind this race and you know sank to get lower than all the crew they did a super job you know home Darlington the third place beat and we we you know we beat her today you know outrun everybody but we beat this race back today it seemed as if you had no problems at all were there any problems during the day I just you go close calls with slow cars with as an how about your thoughts on that yellow flag changing to a green flag with only two to go did that worry you did you know you have everybody else covered at that point well I've been so closed in so many races this year did three laps is all it took through what we had to run second and you know I told them on the radio off the way here that last three less boots in the ski and it says where's little stronger than barrel and I just kept her straight and come hold on a second yesterday in the Grand National race the first a day in the Winston Cup race you must be looking at one of your finest seasons ever where we are you know it's been a real good year for us all the way around in both divisions are richer than all the furs do the job the kids back home you know they pour in there want my wife creases we always have a good time and the drivers having a good time - back to you Bob all right and our winner's circle interview has been brought to you by Goodyear Eagle you either have Goodyear Eagles or you lead them well Jack and dick and I will be back here at Darlington South Carolina to kind of wrap things up for you on this Sunday afternoon the trans out 500 won by Taylor the top ten finishers here this afternoon the winner Dale Earnhardt Darrell Waltrip in a second Bobby Allison third followed closely by Neil Bonnett this was Tim Richmond finishing in sixth position was last week's winner Rusty Wallace seventh was Richard Petty who spun and hit the wall late in the race eighth was Bill Elliott ninth was Kyle Petty and tenth was Ken Schrader so it was an interesting weekend for Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Waltrip won the Grand National race yesterday and Earnhardt finished second and they traded positions here in the Winston Cup race today Jack I tell you I was most impressed by the comments by Earnhardt in victory lane when he said we raced the track and we beat it indeed they did he really went after the race track he raced it all day forgot about the other competitors and said that's gonna be the way I'm gonna win this thing and he deserves to be in victory lane Darrell rather a dick Berggren has caught up with Darrell Waltrip in the pit area so let's go to that interview dick we got him well Darryl a good job not quite a victory well we had a few little minor problems here and there but the overall I'm tickled to get the one second yeah yep and everybody in the picture he did a good job getting us out early there a couple of times and nobody was gonna be bail today he deserved win that race over the last couple of cautions I know how to make him nervous but he had it covered and it's been a deal where Bodine had a best heart at Daytona and somebody will say the best part Rockingham and somebody say the best part Atlanta and so on so forth the same way today one car a little bit better anybody else and he gets it he gets the victory were you really afraid your car was on fire Midway during the race darling yeah what had happened was we had a really concealed Algar in it was leaking though Greece being always said one of my tailpipe started dragging a bit sparking and I thought the thing he called on fire and it's patently pretty bad but it didn't it well I thank the Lord for a safe race to say hi to the did you and Frank and everybody at home Darrell Waltrip second place here it's our lead to this afternoon all right congratulations to Darryl finishing secure the average speed of the race was 128 point nine nine four there were 16 lead changes among eight drivers the tram South 500 has been brought to you by Ford and your Ford dealer have you driven a Ford lately and by bush beers a beer would the taste as smooth as its name and by Levi Garrett chewing tobacco the attributed success in two years days as a driver relate back
