he's victory to his resume which mean a 1 million dollar bonus it'll be tough but not impossible it's been tried on four different occasions but all I accomplished one [Music] [Music] we can deal with three the friend [Music] I'm adding all that a wall and a need automatic [Music] he's already won over two and a half million this season and today could add another million the 48th edition of the longest-surviving race on NASCAR's oldest track takes on even more significance today as Jeff Gordon tries to become the second driver to win the Winston million who in this country hasn't dreamed that one day you'd win the lottery who hasn't wished they would have just one chance to chase a million-dollar rainbow today all eyes are focused on one man and his pursuit of the American dream the test would seem simple for 26-year old Jeff Gordon if he is the first to finish 500 miles and he will reap the riches and Jeff the questions millions want to know at home what are your thoughts and more importantly what are your chances well you know I feel really good we've had a great weekend so far it's been a lot of fun going for this million but today is the true test and we've been to Victory Lane here before in Darlington and it's a tough tough place to get there but we we do have that experience and hope that it pays off got a great team and everybody is really doing a fantastic job so far on the ring gets down to trouble and be at the end I think our chances are good many saying it's one man chasing one chance for one race for one million but I think a different it's not one man as he said it is one team and the man who leads that team is standing by with Bill Weber and that would be ray evernham now he turned 40 this week but he hopes to turn a million here today you idolized coaches like Vince Lombardi and Pat Riley and you've told everyone how it could be ten million dollars and these guys couldn't try any harder so how have you prepared your team for this big event same exact way we've prepared last week at Bristol everybody's worked real well with us trying to keep the pressure off the guys and letting us do our job and you know when you come to Darlington you can't force it here at this place you know you just gotta kind of ride along with her and and be in position at the end and that's what we're gonna do you know we're actually we're having fun with it it's a great opportunity RJ Reynolds given us to go for a million but you know you're just we're gonna have fun with it but we're gonna run our race the last words you're gonna say to your driver before we start well normally I don't I don't talk to him till we get rolling around but I'm gonna tell him like this is what I just said to you and what we talked up about in the truck you know you can't force this place you just gotta ride it because it always changes at the end good luck thank you very much that's Ray Evernham and his Rainbow Warriors are ready for the 1997 Mountain Dews southern 500 and the quest for the most famous words in the world of Motorsports today's Grand Marshall David Thor Baz [Music] [Applause] [Music] they started calling bill alley a million dollar bill back in 85 when he won the West a million right here at Darlington a win today for bill could be worth more than money could buy he hasn't won since this race back in 1994 today he starts second on the pole it's Bobby Labonte like Elliott a win would be worth more than a million dollars in terms of prestigio momentum a championship who's not on their minds this year but a top-10 finish in the point is not out of the question [Music] Hollywood couldn't scripted this one of the event row two finds a man with momentum bail Jarrett's light for the man on a mission Mark Martin first Jarrett nothing breached winning better than winning and Jarrett didn't just win here in his Brittney dominated and he couple that effort with what happened last 39 at Bristol and Jarrett is denied for momentum now the mission martin arts mission is to win a Winston Cup championship he finds himself atop the points for the first time since October of 1990 he said no one I mean no one is gonna outwork out focused around for us in the pursuit of that goal only one guy in this field has a shot at the million bucks and realistically only five have a shot at the points championship these other 38 guys are here for one reason to try and win the southern 500 in the last two races at this track two different drivers to sparkling second-place finishes Hut Stricklin last year Ted Musgrave this strengths the greatest names in NASCAR have been tortured by the lady in black but occasionally she will smile of a driver a fast flirtatious smile but it's probably just a tease it's offering bait or fantasy like most mystery women it's often hard to tell and all these things that Winston me and all these things of drivers going for in folks such a very tough racetrack they've got to do it on Benny they don't call this track too tough to tame for nothing it has bitten you it's fitting me it's fitting almost every driver who has run any amount of laps on this tough racetrack you have to have total concentration every moment and to add to that concentration level this year they have flip-flopped the track going into turn one a single groove race track now it used to be three and four and of course what used to be turns one and two is three and four and vice versa and it keeps us all mixed up all day long but that's going to add to their concentration level and then pit stops pit stop you know some of the drivers that spin it on the front stretch have never made a pit stop there so get it in the biscuit and outfit there's going to be a problem for them [Music] the world leader in motorsports while to a Labor Day weekend relation for the past forty seven years the NASCAR Winston Cup Mountain Dews southern 500 from Darlington South Carolina as we enter this 23rd race the closest in history with Mark Martin on top of the points for the first time since 1993 drivers in the top 10 Jeff Burton Bobby Labonte and Ted Musgrave are the only ones who have not won on this storied old racetrack hi everyone I'm Bob Jenkins let's sum it up just briefly before we go green a million dollars possible for Jeff Gordon one of the closest points battles in history plus a racetrack that these drivers have essentially never competed on and while we're talking about potential winners let me name a couple more Dale Earnhardt a nine time winner at this racetrack and Jeff Burton who has accumulated more points on tracks longer than one mile in length than anybody else in 1997 Jeff Burton drives a Ford here this afternoon and as far as the breakdown is concerned there are twenty fours in today's field 15 Chevy's and eight Pontiacs Ford as the lead of the manufacturers championship going into this event now let's take a look at the starting lineup on the pole Bobby Labonte his second pole of 1997 and alongside Bill Elliott first front row start since Phoenix in 95 the second row Dale Jarrett won the spring race from the pole and Mark Martin the new points leader the third row ken Schrader fourth in last year's southern 500 and Hut Stricklin who was second in that race going to row number four it's Jeff Gordon three missions today the points the million and winning three straight and Dick Trickle who that his third last week his best finish since 1990 the fifth row Sterling Marlin one Darlington win here in 95 and Ernie Irvan whose first race in the 28 car was here in 1993 the next row Brett Bodine second in the 93 southern 500 and Geoff Bodine who finished third twice in 31 Darlington races then in the seventh row we have Ward Burton 8 Darlington race and Michael Waltrip one of his four seventh place finishes was here in the spring in row a whip on Roush teammates Ted Musgrave who finished second in the spring and Jeff Burton in row 9 this afternoon is Terry Labonte and Johnny Benson and then as you look at the rest of the starting grid it the race track is the same but yeah it's not the same so it's not the same because they're different numbers on the world and I think that will have a little bit of a mental effect it'll take them a little while even though they've been here for a couple of days and practice and of course in qualifying but they got to get all of that in coordination with their spotter because they might call the wrong turn at the wrong time great a lot of great drivers back in the field here today and this is a tough racetrack to pass on but if you got a good race cars you can't do it we've heard Ray Evernham and Jeff Gordon say that is just another race you prepare for this race just like you did last weekend at Bristol but is it Benny no it's not this is the Mountain Dew southern 500 there's a final row Jeff green and Lance Cooper and Rusty Wallace took a crash champions provisional again and we had three drivers that missed the field Dave Marcus for the fifth straight time also Greg sacks and Morgan Shepherd not in the field today onboard cameras started 43rd too they rest he Wallace some Miller Lite Ford also Mike Skinner the MTD Chevrolet starting in the 33rd position the Budweiser car Ricky Craven he will have to start last on the field because he's in the backup car like old wall to the Cisco car started 14 Mark Martin 13 points in front for the NASCAR championship started fourth and Dale Jarrett the board quality care car starting in third spot and we will have an onboard camera with Jeff Gordon and a lot of extra coverage the crowd is on its feet every seat is filled the 48 mountain Dew's southern 500 is under green [Music] [Music] and Dale Earnhardt has a problem of the car is down low on the racetrack slow down the backstretch he hit the wall behind the group and brush the wall the first lap is completed Bobby Labonte has led his a trace of 1997 and Earnhardt slow here on the main straightaway now as we go back to the race track and see Bill Aliyah within a car lengths is there an art went by our booth position here you can see a good bit of damage to the right side of their good ring Chevrolet - Jeff Ford's back in 6 fun the yeah [Music] I believe fill that in we'll take the lead get up turn to Bill Elliott a five-time winner here in Darlington twice in the spring race at he's wonder mountain Dew's southern 500 3 times is in the lead now and here comes Dale Jarrett challenging Bobby Labonte for the second place in Ted Musgrave and Jeff Burton Jack Roush move up past Michael Waltrip here the bunnies gonna try to bother the coffee the position up on the inside [Music] michael water get down to the corner so my a favor returned mr. limbani go by on board with Michael Waltrip and Jeff Gordon is trying to take over these six position from Ken Schrader and does so that was the car even trying to pass the practice yesterday and they almost brick but he gets by cling to this time the battle is for second position now as Dale Jarrett and Bobby Labonte are going mark mark watching from the fourth position [Music] different Gentiles to ride around slow we watch this powder for second spot and move Mark Martin into that battle too he is running in fourth place moving right up on Dale Jerry on Strickland is in fifth and then back to Jeff Gordon [Music] [Music] Sharon was challenging for that second we got a crash-up intern so as Kyle Petty and floppy Gordon and Rusty Wallace it also has damage on the Miller live for he's I think l'm in the pits on the backstretch so the caution flag comes out for the first time today on lap number seven as a three or four car crash in turn number one has slowed the field there is the damage to Rusty Wallace to your right Benny pretty significant there on the right side and Todd Bodine who's driving the caterpillar car for David Green and relief of him this week he comes down pit road also with some damage an urn art also has his Carl pit road and you saw their typo dine go behind the wall here's the replay and we see the 96 car blowing an engine going in the corner puts all our boy stur on the racetrack and all these cars go in there with no place to go get that up almost like Dale Jarrett did last year going for the million there similar type situation same turn different numbers on the turn this year now let's listen and watch from the on board of Rusty Wallace [Music] quickly things occur do they cure is right and when something like that happens in front was the iron heart in defense rusty wallet rock behind him with the hood up on his car but there's nowhere to go when you hit an oil slick like that except into the wall or another car well this accident occurred toward the back of the pack everybody up front including Jeff Gordon is OK the dirty car of Benson is now on pit road also with the change of tires going on in that car also a heavy chassis adjustment [Music] [Music] you have to check this out Dale Earnhardt on pit road while ray evernham and the rest of the Rainbow Warriors are in good shape at the moment Jeff running in this sixth position as the caution is over Darlington for the first time this afternoon in the Mountain Dews southern 500 [Music] he has begins speak world loved him - back live to Darlington Raceway in South across America autozone the best parts in Auto Parts nine laps completed here at Darlington still under caution because of a crash up in the first and second turns that involved several cars but before that Dale Earnhardt crashed and they're not they're carrying him to the truck or someplace left check this out he appears to have an oxygen mask this is the odd board from Ricky Craven we'll see if we can see what happened this is going down to turn one now we see Earnhardt up against the wall there he hits the wall one in one he comes off now he's back in the middle of the racetrack but now the car won't steer so he comes off turn four the car will not turn - I'm sorry I've got turned around John Kernan we're on the backstretch pitch outside of the care center where Dale Earnhardt has just been taken in no one on the crew seems to know what's wrong but when Dale hits the wall he stayed out there on the radio he kept telling them oh I can't find a way on to pit road well he finally came down onto pit road they unhooked him took him out of the car he looks really shaken up they called for the doctor to come down they had brought him through the care center now we understand they have sent for an ambulance but right now Dale Earnhardt is in the infield care center being checked out that's his wife Teresa being led into the care center what a development here in the early going of this race of all the stories that we have been anticipated to cover and this certainly is not one of them and I again if I said this incorrectly it was a very first lap the first corner of the first lap then he goes in and press and as he came off he also had won't get nothing turn to prior to today's race Dale Earnhardt had depleted 99.7% of the last run in 1990 had not had a DNF all year green flag comes out back to racing at Darlington as Bill Elliott leads them to the plaque with Bobby Labonte Dale Jarrett mark [Music] Jeff Gordon right behind him [Music] backers in the nine car has been black flagged for passage wrong saddle that restart he was running up in the 20th spot wrinkle makes beam you can't pass on the inside before you take the flag or the line and apparently Lakes being dead so he's being penalized this topic of penalty John Kernan is with Rusty Wallace into your day rusty what happens to the college they blew up going into turn one somebody did late oil on everywhere and we all hit it everybody crashed right behind him just a real bad ill I qualified bad and when you're qualified [Music] short date for Rusty Wallace he's heading back to the trailers make me a drive back home to Charlotte watching action Terry Labonte is right behind him and then Jeremy Mayfield in that 1915 then 17th and you look with the numbers and parentheses indicating that drivers starting position [Music] not a great deal of movement here in the first 15 drivers here is Jeff Morgan challenging much well he challenged him all day long here last year for first he looked like last year's now new selling five before the lead late in the race Husker dus raised in Jeff Gordon trying to take over go way up in the loose stuff up there on the high side betting between turns one and two wait his pit stop - stop it go he's coming out of the pits now as the leader comes off turn four he'll be lucky to get up to speed and stay in the lead thank you terry labonte a rather ricky rudd looking to the inside of michael waltrip here's another look at that incident with Jeremy Mayfield those in the corner and this is a one ruled corner they go in the corner side-by-side almost make contact Jeremy goes up the racetrack close to the wall but I don't think he'd give you to Darlington strike well he kept a good job from not getting that strong did a good job keeping it out a little [Music] ricky rudd is running an 18th position were on board with Michael Waltrip who is 17 and upfront bill Elliott's this driving away he has checked out here in the early going their second and third Bobby Labonte and Dale Jarrett fact about one of the third seconds and behind Jarrett we have and Jeff Gordon's gonna get by huh Strickland and moving to that fifth spot [Music] this race here today if he wins he collects the Winston bonus brought back suspect he likes where he's at right now solar sitting there nobody close to him in the front or behind got a good clean racetrack to run on there that's a good position to be in right there for a while great talent for saving those times write it around they're saving those times whenever bios's time start swearing and going down his car maintains at the same speed Jerry punch exactly what Ray Evernham just said to Jeff Gordon said Jeff you got to think survival for 400 miles all you want to do is survive for the first quarter miles then we'll go after the final 100 with your great exactly where you are [Music] kyle petty is in here's john kernan style on the back the nose was actually dragging the racetrack so Kyle has come down pit road he's watched several has fixed that damage now they're checking under the under the hood with the carpet the kalpeni sitting here on pit road and out of contention for them that finish here at Darlington way back in 1991 in the spring race he was in sixth position Jeff Burton is on the move Burton with an outstanding and impressive performance in the Busch Series race yesterday here at Darlington sorry Hinkle head they've got a lot of pups if experienced there yesterday my way to that race these turns implanted into his mind coming right on through position Bill Weber to talk about yesterday afternoon the experience and the great run that he had in the Busch race now Mark Martin just got passed by Jeff Gordon as he continues his march toward the front but the story on Burton is the fact that yesterday in happy hour they had to chase his heart but the weather change from yesterday the decay is considerable he folders through the car is good by Dick Trickle because of the change in the weather they've built that car specifically for Darlington [Music] to aid position he started in the in that spot for lap number one but then he began the mood fifteen picked up stacks position meanwhile back up front of this bill bill the mountain dew southern 523 doubt of 367 laps have been completed in his advantage now on second place point exactically for [Music] who has ever done that [Music] welcome back to ESPN's live coverage of the mountain dew southern 500 from Darlington Raceway in South Carolina and Jeff Morgan position he's passed bobby labonte it was passed by Dale Jarrett just a couple of laps ago while we were in break so it's Elliott Jarrett Horton and Bobby Labonte [Music] poor Jimmy Spencer Jimmy Spencer has really been on the boat recently he's moved up to 15th position already so he's knocked half of them off yep last time by Jeff Gordon was the fastest car of the top six there is Eliot completing plan [Music] now we see that Gordon is within just two or three car lengths of there this is how Jarrett got second from Bobby Labonte it was in turn one and two the body drifts up Jer turned the car goes under it come off turn two takes the spot and now we will see bill Elliot continuing to leave at 3.8 seconds advantage on Dale Jarrett [Music] a helicopter we wanted tries to run down Dale Jarrett [Music] talked about jeff merkley moment ago guys he's still contention to move towards around he has moved up to six [Music] was that the match's car the top six by quite a margin as a matter of fact yes almost two miles an hour their 33rd lap right now that's about halfway through a pit stop or what we expect to be somewhere between 60 70 laps indication that his car is working well let's say the fastest this time at the line Elliott with a 154 zero here's Jimmy Spencer picking up another position he could be one of the fastest cars out there if not be it will be that time to come he passed a car losing effort five and a half and the leader 154 [Music] fifty-five he's passed his teammate Mark Martin now he's moved in the field going down but once 254 down to 153 and no traffic Bert still 56 miles per hour so Jeff Burton the Exide start clearly right now that blasting the top ten and rest assured his spot making him aware there take care of those tires and he says I am this thing feels so do it so Jimmy Spencer was the second fastest last lap our yellows now on arrows will indicate who was first second and once again Jimmy Spencer picks up another position from Michael Waltrip I was into camp he's increased 20 position and restart he has gained 16 went back to green he was in 2016 ten there's Billy Elliot the leader of the race and check this out Jeff Burton is past deaf course [Music] well Benny I think he does he just radioed said hey ray the car and blues and Ray said how bad is it ingests it ray it's all I can do to hang on is that the car has gotten really really loose race has my friend just back off we'll get it fixed and just gotta back off now and try to hang on to it so the Rainbow Warriors may have some work cut out for themselves here and get that car back handling right why he was taking indicated look Oh see attacked in turn two and that allows Jeff Burton to take over the second position as we sat in the open of the show Jeff Burgin has accumulated superspeedways that is racks bigger than one mile in length than any other driver and the AutoZone on track interval will show you now he narrowed the margin from laps 31 to 35 it was 6.9 seconds on lap 31 and 5 and a half on 35 and look how consistent he is from 30 1.4 seconds to 30 126 seconds found laughing around that's what get the job done here at Darlington is consistency that's right then continues to set the pace here the lead he has is a little over four seconds now and so Bill Elliott who in the last six races has climbed from 13th to ninth and the point standings may be on his way to duplicating what he did here in 1985 winning the race but our coverage of the Mountain Dew southern 500 a Labor Day tradition since 1950 continues here and the coverage that you're now watching is all are that sounds like a very strange situation that yes it does and certainly our prayers the best wishes will be with you well as you can see Jeff Burton has taken the lead and it's the first time he has ever led a southern 500 in his fourth race no check look at thee and Elliott's times on 18 lap 21 speed 30.8 he goes down to 33 point to look at the drop while we talk to mid talked about just a moment ago saving those tires and right now Jeff Burton was when in one second faster than Bill Elliott at lap 18 that were unjust 2/10 of a second apart and Jerry has a report on Bill Elliott now back in second I just talked with my feet with the true team did you know they came here last week and ran not one or two left that's the 50-lap test and in their 50 lap test the car was very consistent of what they learned was after lap 40 the car really began to get loose and go away so we're being very very conservatively got a good car we're going to sit here in a ride and bide our time that's what testing taught Bill Elliott run hard about 40 and ride and make the adjustments why we passed a moment ago you saw Terry Labonte [Music] 30 urban just a few minutes ago and move into tent position and already past Sterling Marlin a lot of good racing going on back there in that neck golly in and out of the pit area I'm sure that the tires are getting the point that they felt like they needed to come in and get fresh tires but look at Jeff Burton still going although now he's down to a hundred and fifty one and a half miles proud of the last time by and just about everybody else is down in the 150 and 149 bracket there's late Steven stop to penalize a moment ago he's fast trying to get back from he is the lap down battle between the four Karim Sterling Marlin and the ten of Ricky Rudd is a battle and it's 4:12 and red booze on the inside takes his tide forward on the upside of the Kodak Chevrolet indeed he does there's Ted Musgraves right behind now hiding in the 14th position and Musgrave goes to the inside and passes sterling he's like Rob leaves the handle is going away on Sterling's car Ricky Rudd has had a good movement or the process the laughs number 12 when he was 19 that now has moved up to the 12th position so the winner of the Brickyard 400 bhakti is won two races tonight Ricki was very good at happy hour practice yesterday this track sort of seats his driving style he's very smooth and you gotta Bank is also very patient they get Burton back in the in the traffic trying to get by Dick Trickle put him a lap down wages way through this traffic and Jimmy Spencer has moved up to seventh position Bobby Labonte falling back here with Michael Walker passing on the outside yeah Bobby's car is is not very good there right now he would Sherlock an opportunity to come in the pits and get some new tires [Music] while they don't invent new tires on that car and so he is going to be passing some cars out there just pray bit your old car got a new one went to get those new tires Jeff Burton has moved into some traffic again that is Darrell Walter for the 17 car in celebration of his 25 years they're painting the car to resemble other cars that he has driven and of course out there that is the old mountain dew paint scheme [Music] 29th edition Jeff Burton goes around arrow cars on the lead lap here at four circuits in the mountain dew southern five Jeff Burton is your leader about a two-and-a-half second advantage on Bill Elliott with Dale Jarrett running third Jeff Gordon for Belle [Music] Jeff Burton leaves the mountain Dew's southern 500 with 58 laps completed there is [Music] seconds behind the leader [Music] second third fourth place cars and Jeff Gordon and forth Jeff Gordon the race as an added bonus to our coverage Ray Evernham his crew chief and Jeff Gordon Mike so that we can't hear the conversations between those two people to see if Jeff can get indeed the million dollar bonus the nascar spotlight now is in Jerry punch 55 miles an hour mark the car down pit road he'll get four tires on the board and he like wants that guys clean this worried about the water disappear and it was a major adjustment in the right where that's my parents going on we check in with whoever man upon he's getting four tires they had a lug nut fall off on the right [Music] we wait for Jeff Burton [Music] stay out there as Ricky Rudd and repair the body come out of the pits so Bert way his car is handling he won't lose as much as some of the others would on staying out there because his cars running faster than they were but he can't afford to stay too long this price cause you live by Jeff Burton 451 and a half miles around the sixth place car Jeff Gordon when a hundred and fifty nine [Music] are there to enter pit road we talked about how that might be a problem for some of the drivers well now Jeff Burton has to be patient if he crawled down pit road he was fight and turn to try and make we get to drink fuel right behind tires going on remember burden with the grape run here yesterday [Music] Exide ford goes up first what he's gone insane not as fast a pit stop as some of the others that are running how big a disadvantage it is pitting on the backstretch well Spencer's crew got him in and out in just under 18 seconds flat about seventeen point nine he would came in running fifth he went out running six let's go back to the front scratching dr. Jerry punch well Ernie Irvan back on pit road not by my choice he had to come back in optical repairs but NASCAR brought him back in our gonna hold him a lap here in the pits he lost one lap for that spin up there when the car number 12 pulled in front of him and now he'll lose a second lap in the pits here under caution at Darlington we are under caution here at the track too tough to tame in the maintain cars to be coming back in and what we're talking about with Bobby Labonte is they they made a sweep adjustment on the shock absorber and they spilled water on the radios the radio is stuck open and making here Bobby but he cannot hear them in other words he has no spotter so when the caution came out they were jumping up and down on the pit wall trying to get Bobby detention so possibly he would slow down prior to getting over to turn one and two now he brings the pole static Interstate Batteries Pontiac back on the pit road and they go to work on the radio he said this happened about three or four races ago we his fill water in the radio Dudley just a short circuit Ceridian where you can hear the drummer but he can't hear them about twenty or thirty minutes later when it dries the radio works to take that chance so they have brought a different radio in trying to strap it in as you watch Bobby's body Mark Martin will come back in trying somehow to correct a problem being so very very loose so we're continuing on the Valvoline Ford and those spotters are the eyes of the race driver and boy when you can't hear them you know how desperately you need them when there is action on the racetrack that you just can't see in front of you they're located up above us here at Darlington Raceway keeping an eye on the racetrack and telling their driver what's going on out the first red Ferrari tires go away to the racetrack but he did lose several positions that's a disadvantage would keep talking about by the back pin guys on the front finish your pit stop they go back on the racetrack and Spencer variant the cars on the lead lap Mike Spencer Mike Skinner I should say got out of the car and walked to the ambulance he appears to be okay high overhead Darlington Raceway South Carolina gives you an idea of indeed this racetrack is egg-shaped and this shot is from the Pennzoil copter cam we are under caution because of a crash involving Mike Skinner let's go on board with him and watch and listen [Music] Wow wall didn't give an inch did it and just watch how quickly that Mark Martin looking back this while she's gonna just turn it fell down on the inside while both we had to be running I'd say a hundred and forty miles an hour when he goes into that wall nomura but Mike down out of the car under his own power walk to the ambulance appears to be okay Bill Elliott is right there on his spoiler Musgrave has about 15 laps on his tires Bob is not going to stick in the turns to go sailing with a powder whoever and there's only ten laps have gone by so James H decided to leave their tennis balls back [Music] it's getting better and better thank you said it's just now beginning to come down I think you're gonna be strong in the second half [Music] laughs down now is both Elliott and Jarrett passing by well before the caution came out thankfully there once again Elliott has it - it that's not inside [Music] one laps of this race and for the Winston million is still very much in contention he's running in fifth position [Music] Jimmy Spencer is another driver on the boat Aires moving past Terry Labonte going into tenth they lost oh we talked about the numbers but he wasn't fed get stopped hitting on the backstretch but he's picking them back up now [Music] Musgraves running Simon raus teammates as Burton goes by Musgrave and so does Jeff Gordon or spot [Music] Jerry can update is now Jerry a lot of guys coming in the fence I'm not gonna talk about this tops exactly during these pit stops a lot of drivers you'd be surprised how fast word spreads the drivers heard that Dale Earnhardt was not responded to the cruiser laughs hit the wall in lap one and then very uncharacteristically was taken out of the race car in an ambulance and taken away so many drivers during that last caution we're asking their crew chiefs how is they alert please find out after on it even though he beat up like a drum for many years as a Winston Cup champion after champion a lot of these guys they're concerned during the caution when they could wander a little bit and we're very concerned speaking of the Earnhardt and silver team center he is okay Mike that that had to be a very scary ride just listening to it on my head I can't hear what you're saying but we got tagged from behind over there and Lowe's Chevrolet spun around time they change tires and come in they pluck the lap times lap five lap ten left 15 left 20 you see how the times get slower and slower slower that's the slope of the curve that's how the tires begin to go away and it's slow down here at Darlington now the average is 0.03 seven segments per lap that's the average slope if you slow down you can flatten the slope down and slow down less you stay more consistent on a longer run you start making the slope steeper it means he's got a problem with the car you need to pit earlier that's the average point zero three seven seconds to lap times 40 60 laps means over a period of one fuel stop you'll lose almost two seconds during the run that's why mechanical engineering very useful here high-tech stuff huh it is that man oh man well under caution one point three six six mile racetrack well Kyle Petty continues to be in this race he's back in 34th position he's been named first quarter nominee for the true value men of the Year award true value the official store of NASCAR is sponsoring the man of the year award and they will give $50,000 to a NASCAR driver who illustrates superiority both on and off the racetrack four years ago Kyle created a ride across America to help raise money for various charities his ride this year was renamed the Kyle Petty Hot Wheels racing charity tour and ran from Texas to Tennessee Kyle and all the riders stopped along the way to present checks to area hospitals and to encourage and entertain the kids in all over two hundred thousand dollars was raised and distributed to various charities Kyle reminded everyone that what drivers do out of the track each week is it nearly as important as what the hospitals are doing to help the kids who need it so Kyle Petty the first quarter nominee for the NASCAR true value of the Year award as we said the winner will receive $50,000 and he will split that money among his favorite charities and there's a list of just some of the favorite charities that Kyle has dr. Jerry punch has an update on pit road there's a lot of moisture in here in the carnival 28 minute partier but whatever was involved in the accident he lost the duct work in front of the car that keeps the car cool to the man to bring the car in a couple of times and literally pour water in and around the radiator the concern was in Robert Yates asked NASCAR sir would you let us move up hit road to the empty pit because we pour water all over the front of our car our pit stall is going to be very very wet and we are pitting right beside Jeff Gordon so when he comes down pit road he can hit our water and slide through his pit NASCAR says no you got to stay put so they're trying to dry the pit they've been on us on and off pit road with sweepers and blowers trying to dry the moisture up but it's still pretty doggone wet down here is a Hamilton pit as the field comes down the main straightaway they receive the cross flags indicating that we have reached the halfway point of this race but we are under caution and so the halfway money will not be paid for a while but 184 of the 367 laps that make up the mountain to southern 500 have been completed to Darlington just as you rejoin us the been pointed out there he really gets off down there that is the racetrack for Hammond as you well know drive this track for a number of years that's a good spot to have a car working good for you you can get through talk in there get through 40 racetrack [Music] but they we put a few car lengths on Dale Jarrett that the drive to catch Bill Elliott you see came up turn to move down a little bit [Music] once again that last lap Jeff had the fastest beat Jeff fort fives and five top ten nine races here including three wet today but trying to become the first driver to win three consecutive and about that time Jeff Gordon Cole Ray Abraham it is really getting loosen races you know what it is it's that right rear tire we're heating up that's why it's gonna be hard to hang on particular that in turns one and two so just like clockwork out it goes away [Music] make the loose this beats the line remember about ten laps ago he was the fastest for several consecutive that might be why that he got loose you can see almost two miles per hours nor than the leader two and a half miles per hour Florida too much on that right rear tire keeping up there [Music] there used to take care of those tires well we were interrupted there for good reason with our horse race recap so let's go back to it and check the track behind the wall with the work being done on it and here is a list of the drivers and cars that have officially dropped out of competition those five plus these five so that's the situation Jeff Gordon is still very much in the money here recently Dale Earnhardt was taken the caution it's the seventh one of the afternoon and it comes out on lap 211 here's John Jimmy radio did told the crew had gotten real loose hit the wall and now he doesn't have any brakes and the leaders headed down pit road yes indeed here comes Elliot jarred bill Weber and the leaders do come down this will be four tires and fuel everyone will get their windshield lead and the front as well to help many potential overthrow away Jerry punch Bill Elliott a little bit tight but told the guys leave it alone don't make any dust with this change four tires meanwhile the car number 24 Jeff Gordon Ray Evernham said we're going to take a partial rubber out of the right front and put a rubber in they had the right front tire off to deposit several light they're taking a partial rubber out putting a bull rubber end down any more cars down the way to think for cars sitting on pit road hey finally another white front tire back on they will pull of the Jack and Jill Gordon is down and away so he gives up a lot of driving down there but the main thing is to get the car handling well now they're on the ten cars on the big laptop so they would if there were a lot more cars on the lead lap and if he waited another to the next pit stop and then to make that change then he'd have to fight to do he wouldn't have that many left to fight his way back through so I think there was very wise to do it now so he still has about a hundred and fifty laps to fight his way back to the front watching him go down the backstretch and into the third turn I'm sure he'll come back in change those left sides yep yes indeed he is ray looks toward turn number four and sees Jeff coming off the racetrack and down pit road once again to get the left change Jerry and of course they had warned jet that there might be some moisture in 28th pit with this heat that moisture has been long gone and dried up now they have made the adjustment on the right front with the partial rubber out the full rubber in it will bring the DuPont Chevrolet back down pit road for left-side car jack going underneath that big dollar sign to drop I love the jacks top left front tire left on he put them here and pulled away [Music] he goes out now you'll be in 10th place with Bob we talk about having a lot of time guys look at that that's behind us and I couldn't see it but boy he might not have as much time as we thought if that cloud comes over the racetrack that much me it sure does Jerry you have more well NASCAR dis reported to some of the teams that they looked at the radar and rain is 20 miles out they said rain 20 miles out and not sure if it's going to come this way remember yesterday it rained very profusely in downtown of Florence but did not rain here until late in the afternoon in fact it at the conclusion of 235 out of the 367 lacks Dale Jarrett right there behind him about four or five darlings the most labs that Elliot's ever led in a single Darlington race was 154 in the 1988 southern 500 and he is about to lead is 158 lat at the banner day for Bill Elliott reflect the Bill Elliott of all he has been good right from the get-go on NASCAR today this afternoon he told Dave Despain they're trying something new on this car he hoped it worked [Music] the chassis setup maybe that they had used before how about a cherry pie and you and Benny are exactly right my team the crew chief told me this chassis right here something that came and tested went last week is something radically different he said it is not a Hopkins it is not a lot but it has not anybody else to chassis it's one of a start out put the name change and they have found in my set I can tell you who built the Jersey but then I'd have to chew chew it is working for Bill Elliott as we take a look at him and his two closest pursuers from the Pennzoil and some pretty stiff wind and maybe with some rain nearby but nevertheless it's hanging in there and given us some good well there have been three drivers who have won that the three of four crown jewel races Leroy Yarborough in 1969 David Pearson in 76 and Bill Elliott in 85 but the program didn't start until 1985 and so bill is the only one
