[Music] the hardest of the Houston Oilers will be beating a little faster today even the great teams of pump Phillips Earl Campbell and Dan Pastorini never achieve what the current oiler team hopes to accomplish today win a divisional title outright Jerry Glanville Oilers had only two feet to the clock left last month when Tony zendaya failed a 28 yard field goal to beat the Bengals by two points now the Oilers are in command Sam watch and his bangles hope to keep the dream alive of returning to the Super Bowl as AFC Champions [Music] NBC Sports presents the National Football League today it's the Houston Oilers vs. the Cincinnati Bengals hey it's warming up here in Cincinnati was 10 below zero last night it's up to 10 degrees right now have two longtime rivals in the AFC Central ready to tee it up in this most important game to be played in frigid conditions good afternoon everyone dime tricky with Ahmad Rashad on a day in Cincinnati was going to be very tough to play pitch in cats but we've got two of the great passers I'm out doing next Vikings so you have to be happy to be here I am freezing I'm not even trying to pretend like I'm not Jerry Glanville the coach of the Oilers says this game will probably come down to the team it has last possession that's the way it was the last time they played they went right down to a final field goal in Houston wanted well one of the things that Jerry Glanville coaches he coaches his team to try to stay in the match just right down to the last minute of the game and that's when they make their move he also has told his team like the last four games are the most important games of the season as you know this is the second to the last game so this is a very important for no other win today as I'm sure most of you know gives them the outright division title these teams are more than rivals they are allowed enemies Sam White's the coach of the Cincinnati Bengals says we not only want to beat Houston we want to soften them up because we need Cleveland the beat of next Saturday night to that's one of the tough problems when you talk about distractions I think it's traction for the Cincinnati Bengals is the fact that they not only have to win they got to soften up the Oilers and they got to hope that everybody else beats everybody else I think that can become a distraction they just need to try to win this game forget about beating up the Oilers nobody has done that in the last three years the big fact today going for the Houston Oilers if they've got a cold-weather quarterback who's been great over the years up in Kennedy was in Warren Moon the two top passes the American Conference are matched in Warren Moon on the right and Boomer Esiason they both have done well in cold weather over the years this may sound crazy but I think that when you have this kind of conditions the onus is on the quarterbacks because the quarterbacks have a chance they have a good day and the quarterbacks hands are always warm we got two of the best today and it's going to be right on their shoulders if they can bring their team to victory there's Jerry Glanville says his team is not dirty but admits we do live on the edge this game is going to get rough and it's going to get rough early Sam white saw his team fall in the closing moments last week and now they stand at 7 and 7 they need a lot of help to get back into the playoff the defending AFC champions the Bengals they need Minnesota to be Cleveland today next Saturday night and now that's dependent only on the Bengals feeding the others today Bengals have to win the Oilers do not one win in the last two games their divisional champion the kickoff comes down to Lorenzo white of the Oilers and he takes it across the 20 [Applause] [Music] a 15-yard return balls like a rocket won't be a long kicking game today there is Warren Moon who quarterback five Great Cup championship teams in Canada his offensive line one of the best with Munchak and Matthews all-pro players at the guards moon comes in as the highest-rated pastor in America I'm self [Applause] next two receivers come in they go to the red gun for receiver set off [Applause] play with gloves on whether experience those you're better off without are you he fumbles on the first play and the Bengals seem to have the ball they're the culture snap of the day the war impression and jerry glanville zoila's wins the ball to the Cincinnati [Applause] he didn't want to start this game with a big play provided by the defense because that can be around [Applause] this looks like moon did not receive this name the balls just floating around there on the field and Fulcher who is one of the best big play men and all the football comes up with a youth playing a game like today and all of a sudden momentum just turns around [Applause] tiresome getting excellent field position on the turnover on the first play from scrimmage [Music] angles into the oiler defense and he's down close to the 22 yard line where 20 back Steve Brown knocked into James Brooks over 1100 yards rushing Anthony muñoz the consensus All Pro this is the best running team in the National Football League the Cincinnati Bengals may run behind a terrific offensive line James Brooks and Stanford Jennings the starting runners denied Mathiason for receiver said a rookie John Garrett will come in today as the Bengals now go on second down and six and here is a fair at the 8-yard then lost Jim McGee had it out of bounds and then he lost the ball anyway look like that guy almost knocked him out of bounds Oh done and look lucky if the defender hadn't hit him let's take another look at it is it Patrick Allen they're coming Tim McGee he's going up for the bomber watches he's getting ready to come down he's not out of bounds there's another is a great look there McGee having it all now he comes the third down in 7 bitter bitter cold the Bengals as you know go from scrimmage without Huddle's quite often and the orders don't call many defense upon that Granville says they have been called one in 16 there is a science in play fake touchdown for the bingo fumble by the honors [Music] scrimmage replays turned into a 22 yard touchdown to Eddie Brown [Applause] about this scenario then I think it's because of the threat of that running off Boomer Esiason was able to have so much time to throw this ball you gotta worry about him running the ball boomer will fake now watch any ground fake the bass and just take off the ball is screwed in the air right now then once this little push my toxic element for the ball gets there just great concentration on the part of any ground [Applause] and come up with the catch he Browns 40 first catch of the year his fourth for a touchdown a season ago he was the leading receiver in the American Panthers had almost 1,300 look at it watch bathroom gallon with the little elbow pushed there right at the end but he catches that ball he's way inside you know he's been in a little bit of a viewing that touchdown Julie is the referee while I above Riverfront Stadium the review is on last time these two teams played no more than 13th of the a field goal go I think the question was whether or not he had control of the ball and he looking at it three times there we can see that he had very good control before these are the bones [Applause] that's the point is knit up and goodbye Jim greets and so the bengals in the game they must win are on the board quickly with a seven to nothing lead [Music] [Applause] [Music] holiday greetings from Budweiser [Music] the people who bring you Budweiser wish you and yours the very best of everything this holiday season they predicted a gloomy year for everyone but they didn't count on Mazda with cars and trucks engineered to feel just right now Mazda is racing toward an all-time sales record with record-setting deals that can save you up to $1,000 now so come get a record-setting deal at the Mazda race to the record at your local Mazda dealer now did you know that now almost any size business can save with AT&T if your business is spending as little as $50 a month in long-distance you can save whether you're spending $50 a month up to five thousand dollars a month we had the one plan for you call us we'll even waive the signup fee Pro Watts another AT&T advantage [Applause] with a touchdown reception as the Bengals jump on the Oilers quickly to start this game seven nothing Warren Moon fumbled the first snap from center and then three plays later as iesson on a 22 yard throw a strike to Eddie Brown who made a terrific play in the end zone and the Houston Oilers find themselves down seven nothing because they have their kick return team out for a second time a huge play for the Cincinnati Bengals the Houston Oilers hope that they can come out here and get it quickly well that hasn't happened the Bengals strike blood first knock down field that he picked up at the and forward progress going to be to about the 32 yard line as David Williams a rookie tackle from Florida number one draft choice with the first pick off return perhaps of his life but maybe the laugh he didn't know what to do we got the lateral in a great play here when a big guy gets involved everybody talks about lateral instant eating just one win in the last two games [Music] [Applause] to break their way they have [Music] [Applause] now to be Houston next Saturday night mockers go down as Mike Rozier runs hard into the Bengal defense kids from rye the nose tackle was on the stop for the Bengals they go use some hand signal by referee Dooley [Applause] rather Jim Tunney is our referee and he's think those illegal use of man [Applause] well the boilers not starting this game like they wanted to the first possession you give the ball up Cincinnati Bengals and all of a sudden they start this one [Music] feel that Pittsburgh [Applause] rally to beat the Steelers we've been putting on the playoff Drive down the stretch run from this sit down field is a strike after the 26 yard line where forward progress will be Lois Phillips came up on he would Jeffries number 84 who made the reception this is a lot of times where Houston is most dangerous because they have those four wide receivers in they're tough to match up man-to-man and moon here just looking for hey with Jefferies and it's a very smart point you don't want to try to get back the entire you know all that yard ease back in one spot you get seven eight and move yourself on down the field a lot of times quarterbacks try to get it back all in one plane in the corner interception [Applause] one year in a 16-game season in Canada past for almost fifty seven hundred yards of pro football record against the cliffs who lets it go long please but it's incomplete yes please running in one-on-one coverage against Lois Phillips Rickey Dixon and on the Blitz you see warmoon picking the Blitz up very well and just lets that ball go anything the ball is just on the other side of the receiver they had a chance to get a big play anytime you got a blitz you got man-to-man coverage on the outside the receiver has to be alert and the quarterback has to be alert and that one they just misfired because warren put the ball on the opposite side of the receiver [Applause] and 16 12:7 nothing coming back from that leg fracture he suffered in the Super Bowl playing with a steel rod in his leg and he will for the rest of his career but he's back up pretty much the full speed after the injury now one of the things Tim ride is so tough and he's so intense he's always chasing the ball at the beginning of the season he didn't have that mobility but we've watched him grow and get back to almost where he was last year the putters in and he's been the [Applause] and he brown his backseat along with Richard Carey mrs. Carey who has the ball is it up to midfield the punt return 14 yards of Bengal second possession will initiate a very good field position a 45-yard punt 14 I've returned by rookie Richard Terry they predicted a gloomy year for everyone but they didn't count on Mazda with cars and trucks engineered to feel just right now Mazdas racing toward an all-time sales record with record-setting deals that can get you $750 cash back on 89 Mazda trucks now so come get a record-setting deal at the Mazda race to the record at your local Mazda dealer now some people see shaving is something you do for 3 out of necessity brawn the world's number one selling foil shaver let's call it sick can't Oh tenures deserves something true haven't I made you coffee for 10 years haven't I had to drink it now come on why show your friends this sure the diamond anniversary band this year tell her you'd marry her all over again okay I'll show him tomorrow NBC Sports coverage of the National Football League is brought to you by Budweiser beechwood aged for that clean crisp picks Bud's for you fibrin electric shavers it is through superior design that superior performance can be achieved and by Mazda cars and trucks Mazda it just feels right the Bengals got a gift early and it didn't come from Santa a turnover on the first play from spinach Lauren moon fumbled the snap from center three plays later the Bengals were in the end Esiason to Eddie Brown from 22 the bank has never bought a second time ladies seven nothing [Music] the iesson again Alfie [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and Cris Dishman was right there near the play but when yeah well he am speed like Tim McGee he's a 9 300 man you gotta give him room and when he comes flying off the wall 100 miles an hour you must get back deep and protect that deep bomb and when you do that he turns left and picks up the first down Tim McGee having a great year last year it was heading Brown this church Tim Magritte Tim McGee he's been making just spectacular catches against the Browns he made two phenomenal plays healthy Cleveland they're looking at this again and make sure both feet were in on the sidelines you can see vulture and Cris Dishman getting into a little I don't know what you call it a little argument over there professional catch both Keenan [Music] despite the frigid conditions boomers growing well over two to three 440 yards [Applause] [Music] now first time in ten for the bangles at the 32-yard line of the Oilers Houston playing without its best defensive players rate Childress is a local egg breakfast defensive end [Music] 182 somehow moves the pile and gets positive yardage inside the 30 nothing on the board yet a Cleveland stadium Vikings in the browns in the game most important the AFC Central Packers and the Bears tied up Miami in a game that's most important for them up in front of the story out of its field goal in Indy appleís [Music] you watch this Houston oil and defense and boy every play all 11 of those guys are trying to get on the pile I mean you got to be yeah all the way down stop and ready to get up before they stop hitting me [Applause] Jerry's kids effectively no [Applause] winds up to throw second and seven as Esiason came up with the fastball and it was floating free in the Oilers secondary but nobody could make a play on the ball the other defense has been moved around today because of injuries fuller starts at left in replacing the injured ray Childress Richard Byrd at nose tackle pass rusher Sean Jones and right in this iesson they crush against him he lets it go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] quickly woken up [Applause] to flag down on the field Ahmad small things to do to fight on the other team sideline can't get much lay down the quarterback nobody's getting hurt down there's just a lot of pushing and shoving with Jim Tony [Music] you know what that meant get out of the way [Applause] derisive chant coming from the Bengal fans directed at the orders of the owners are trying to bring the channel you see they like it that's right Glanville says and we get booed on the road we must be doing something right [Applause] [Music] [Applause] amendments enemy eggs range the most feelings I've ever heard on the one play quite understand that either this is the late hint right here woman Alexis ball go and then gets the level there's dish Manasseh Cheers he shows why he's a defensive bagging on a receiver by knock that ball down he's intercepted for this year as an enforcer for the Bengals Anthony munos the 285 pound all-pro tackle and no one wants to fight him but boy that was quite a few hours a lot of buildings I don't think you can call anymore in one play still trying to get this all sorted out we have 1108 to play in the first quarter the Bengals lead seven to nothing on a Mathiason to Eddie Brown touchdown pass on their first possession here does that nullify everything I mean we're not doing anything with the ball all those penalties and the ball doesn't move dressed for the worst she said the oilers with all her chatter and whooping he said they either bring out the best of the worst in you but they certainly bring out emotion that's for sure [Applause] [Music] you can offset Falls the players going with it's big doubt tell you all those penalties is appalled at move everybody cheers to warm up a little though right that's right now this boomer letting the ball go now watch this plate hit he gets level Dishman levels the ball we enough cameras to catch the other penalties [Applause] quite a few more of you listening to Jim Tony but we're right back where we started third down again like I might have been William fuller tough to see from that angle made the late hit we get set to go back from scrimmage seven for Cincinnati 29-yard [Applause] or wideouts in the game again now for the Bengals [Applause] [Music] I assume floats it downfield is taught by Timothy oh he's inside the 15 teen yard gain on a third and seventh place first down bang [Applause] right there about Pacha gallons play very good catch by Jimmy that ball was a floater there's a coil you see the bra I'm sure woman let's this one get away from him and McGee gets the chance to go up and get it and maybe that's that late hit that McGee was talking about he was on the ground when eaten came across him in the 21 [Applause] to a good start turn the corner and [Applause] 14 yards [Applause] 13-nothing to be played in the first quarter No [Applause] [Music] why put that all the rest he takes this ball and this is all James Brooks he shows the burst to speed to get me outside and then another verse to get into the James whoops more underrated players in the league watch them get outside right here gets around Brown and now turns on the speed to get in the end zone and just dives in just a very gutsy play by James whoops one of the best running back to the Nash everything he says you talk about Eric Dickerson he can only ruin he said I can block I can catch [Music] signal that he did ix touchdown of the season for Jane crook if it goes it's getting a shot at his foot now he's in nobody cut the touchdown to me [Applause] and the Bengals on the board a second time landfill he wielded are frozen or both ensure that the frozen posture Brij hits the point after often good and in the game the bangles keep their dream of returning the Superbowl alive they've taken a 14 to nothing lead they predicted a gloomy year for everyone but they didn't count on Mazda with cars and trucks engineered to feel just right now Mazda is racing for an all-time sales record with record-setting deals that can save you up to $1,000 now so come get a record-setting deal at the Mazda race to the record at your local Mazda dealer now [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in response to popular demand we proudly introduced an icon tell a touch 300 a totally automatic dual lens camera that significantly reduces redeye [Music] [Applause] [Music] hero cologne for men when you have these why would you need the black & decker power ratchet because it's there easier and works and lots of places manual wrenches can the Black & Decker power ratchet it's really turning a lot of heads come home to the best in college football as Auburn rattles Ohio State Duma Hall of Fame Bowl then number five Florida State takes on 6th ranked Nebraska at the Fiesta Bowl and that will determine the national championship as number one Colorado battles fourth ranked Notre Dame at the Orange Bowl New Year's Day the best poles are on NBC so unlikely that Jerry did leave me tickets you usually lesion for Elvis or the Phantom of the Opera Eliot Ness unless I got underneath that mask as Elvis I doubt that Jerry did me that wouldn't be new so the Bengals ready to kick off for a third time in the games not yet five minutes old they lead it 14 to nothing we'll return to the first place I'm sidekick attempts in the Oilers Rumble around piling up at the vault look like Bob Marasco rookie tight end from Penn State who got it nothing on the board yet in the first quarter at Cleveland between the Vikings and the Browns actors have gone in front of Chicago Miami controls its own destiny at least is a wild card Miami winning today and next week against Kansas City goes to the playoffs as a wild-card regardless of what Buffalo does Miami still with a good chance to win the division of the bills father and faltering lately God's Way he's just ran back up on 70 yards for dolphin touch one morning the Oilers try to get it going [Applause] looking for the swing pass downfield throw nice connection out to the 44 yard line there was a gain of nine on the play Ricky Dixon comes up and blasters drew Hill but he held on out of New York and NFL live here's Bob Costas all right down and here's the Scotch ladies punt return you mentioned a moment ago Ron Stark boots it for the Colts ladies fields it at the 30 in 70 yards later he's in the end zone the Dolphins do as you said have a crack at the title in the AFC East and they're a wild card for sure if they win this one and beat the Chiefs at home next week 10 nothing dolphins in the 1st thanks Bob set to go now from scrimmage and second and short the Oilers busted ahead and get a first down they're out to the 47 yard line and a run by Mike Rozier he was a training camp holdout after being a thousand-yard Russian season ago former Heisman Trophy winner from Nebraska he has been hampered by injuries this year he's coming off his best game at 83 yards last week against Tampa Bay and just 13 Terry I really think that hold [Music] this year but he's starting to get hot b-big plays now found 14 nothing in there go out to Ernest givins out of turnout [Music] reminder to our viewers that we'll be selecting the Budweiser Most Valuable Player for today's game at the conclusion of the game around 7:00 for Cincinnati McClellan's to the left in for injured Jim scow they make wholesale substitutions when they go to their all-out pass defense but sure Kerry's been a surprise doing the best cover corner it is second down and 10 for Houston here's alonzo highsmith [Applause] he's out close to the 50-yard line bring up third down and the Oilers will need at least seven us Reggie Williams playing his last home game from Dartmouth stand out on the field and lead her out and off it a great player - none just just a great player I know that last game at home [Applause] [Applause] to the community and the Bengal defenses Warren Moon rolls out seven yard near our receiver no foul call because of skip McClendon had the heat on him and the oil first of all likes to do with that little half roll out is stop and throw back the other way but because of all that pressure he's get from the other side he could not stop he had to keep rolling out and once you keep rolling out you really can't throw all the way back across the other side of the field so boom threw it away the early landfill was on the air yesterday thing for live television cameras that he doesn't like Sam watch mutual here's a punt downfield by Montgomery that will roll out of bounds at the 21 yard line just a 30 yard punt by the NFL's leading putter reg Montgomery from Michigan State a first-year player bangl offense is ready to roll again life's full of simple pleasures like the comfort of Levi's jeans it began as a game [Music] [Applause] turned into a battle and now it's out of control [Music] but bold to me coming January 28 this time this is really weird I have to shampoo a lot and every time I do my hair gets wet but my scalp gets dry tight and itchy from where I shampoo the dryer can get I can't stop shampooing but I can use this new dry scalp shampoo from Head & Shoulders made a different way so it doesn't dry out your scalp like those other guys can try head and shoulders new dry scalp shampoo and help wipe out dry scalp NBC Sports serves your need to know all week long dial one nine hundred four five four three five hundred for NBC scores plus twenty four hours a day seven days a week anywhere in the USA forty nothing bangles in the first quarter dime trinket Ahmad Rashad Ahmad you're gonna make it all right now yeah I think everybody I'm warming up I'm warming up it's gonna get better as this game warms up I'm warming up warmed up quickly for the Cincinnati Bengals jumping right after a 14 to nothing lead before five minutes were played in the first quarter and now the Bengals aren't offense again the quarterback [Applause] on the 21-yard line here at four la is cut down at the 20 the weather conditions frigid in the hard hitting is going to lead to more turnovers there's been one critical one the opening snap from scrimmage on Houston's first possession Warren Moon couldn't handle it and the Bengals quickly got the ball and subsequently went in for the opening score of the game the 22 yard touchdown pass you notice that snow behind that girl there's not milton that's gonna be here for a while they hit a six inch snowfall blanket the Greater Cincinnati area Friday 11 play is ahead for a gain of about 10 yards it'll bring up third and one don't you know having played in this weather quite a few times I really think it's easier to throw the ball than it is to carry the ball here you see boomer looking for Rodney Holman one of the best tight ends in the league somehow when you run the ball and you get all those helmets hitting on the ball it's like you said earlier you get the big fumble and you get a turnover throwing the ball is seems to be a little bit easier I assume throwing with gloves on it's interesting the Warren Moon after all those cold weather games that he he absolutely functioned better without gloves he didn't at the outset but grant used to tell us that - I beg to differ he needs some big old thick gloves on Sam calling the play and one of the things when Sam calls he's placed on the sidelines the entire office knows the play it's not like just sent to the quarterback everybody knows all the signals so that everybody is on the same page which cuts down on mistakes [Music] down the bengals need one now the ball is tight in Jim Riggs number 87 yes his fifth catch of the year but it's good for four yards in a first down in o'clock down the 6:34 to play in the first quarter Sam Sam lights you're agreeing with me a little bit I need you to throw that ball just a little nice half roll out Boomer Esiason hits Riggs on the run nice tackle first down and boomer keeps putting up those numbers denied 5 for 7 69 yards and a touchdown if this is a receivers day I mean because you can miss tackles in this countable one you can go the distance the only suspect area the other team is their secondary that gives up a lot of passing yards Testaverde after over 330 against the last week in a three point loss to Houston any Brown who caught the touchdown pass on a first yard reception Cris Dishman one of the most loquacious of the oilers I notice that he's getting a little bit more quiet they say he is just a dr. Jekyll mr. Hyde he's one of the most quiet caring individuals off the field but once it gets on the field he gets a little bit crazy you see Eddie Brown that's what you want to try to do you throw a little hitch past him he can break this tackle he's off to the races and it's very hard to tackle in cold weather [Music] second down comes up now and second down and two is the play call Eric ball big fat 215 pounds the second object from UT he's up and inside the 45-yard line a gain of 13 yards on the plate and the Bengals have yet another first down excellent blocking by that Cincinnati offensive line allowing Eric ball to get outside once he got outside he was all he did it all on his own see these big fellas reach blocking they're keeping that defense inside and now Eric balls out there on his own nice little move there on Dishman run out of bounds by Donaldson told me earlier in the year that he was a little bit worried about his weight he said well I've adjusted since then I think my weight is just fine all I need is just more playing time big future here in Cincinnati bangles could be running a reverse they like to do that with policy is the reverse to Hollifield and shut down for a loss on the play it indeed run the reverse but it didn't go anywhere as Johnny means number 91 and Steve Brown number 24 is owned in at it and there's a loss of five yards comes off how they feel with those black shoes on they told me before the game he's their secret weapon said he runs the 40 in about two seconds here Houston was ready for that one I think that's the play that they were looking for very well played by Johnny Meads block the punt against the Bengals in the victory November 13 at the Astrodome and Eugene seal recovered for a touchdown in that two-point Houston win holman nine yard line [Applause] that many think is the best in pro football disposition is a flag is down Rodney Holman is on the receiving end he'll come back legal use of hands Carla signaled against the Bengals gating a 30-yard throw from Esiason to Rodney Holman Rodney Holman bill they used to the hands 65 offensive second down max Punto yeah a little upset about watching max door number 65 right to the right of your screen in the middle he's got well he's got his hand caught in there just a little bit that I'm sure max would say that's a little ticky tacky things got along the yardage down now second down and 25 for the Bengal we didn't gravity just got his hand caught in between his way when bill says the no-huddle offense isn't so cerebro we've beaten five in the last six times we played him here's a hard flow down [Music] Dishman in the game was the antenna receiver Dishman is a rookie from Purdue and this point machine these are just one on foreigner Jetsons even John says he's with opponents led to some fouls and this time he hit early it's a pass interference call official behind them made that play made the call he was all over the top of Tim McGee [Applause] discussion down there defensive passing appearance number 28 first out you know if you see Tim McGee trying to run a break-in around he breaks inside manner he pushes him to the outside now you come breaking across the middle of the field Dishman right on his back and it is very close so I guess these days now deepens a bat can't touch the guy too much because he really was both going after the ball the Bengals get up first down its first down at the 44 yard line of Houston 14-nothing Cincinnati in the first [Applause] pledget Tim McGee his tan was good for a pickup of six on the out pattern in the gig knocked out of bounds by Bubba McDowell a rookie strong safety at this Oilers are touting for Defensive Rookie of the Year he's had a terrific year third round draft choice from Miami and Tim McGee also has out of a terrific year because of his stats and his deep range possibilities that's why he's always able to run that little 610 yard out and should be open all the time because anytime you come up and try to defend against that this young fellow will go right by you in a hurry the fastest Bengal Tim McGee he was a number one pick out of Tennessee [Applause] second down a long to conduct for Cincinnati you won't get there knocked - - village it'll bring up third and - Richard Byrd 71 was on the tackle along with John Grimsley 59 Vikings in the brown still scoreless a rare day when the Browns are rooting for the Bengals and vice versa Indianapolis is now on the board end zone touchdown bingo [Applause] a Houston secondary [Applause] and the Bengals have taken us 22 nothing you got to give a lot of credit to Boomer Esiason he caught Cincinnati trying to where's in they quick snap and he went deep right away Robert Lila's was trying to call timeout before the play went well he didn't have a chance that's what happens on that quick-quick office [Applause] Jim greets the father of six he had two little kickers at the practice yesterday with him it's the point after after Eddie Brown makes the second touchdown reception of the day and the bangles have blown this game open in the first quarter 21 to nothing was amazing to watch here's a very electric concentration on his play bubbled out tries to swing his hand in there and Eddie Brown watching the ball the entire term makes a nice catch but Boomer Esiason was watching the oiler defense and they were just slowly trying to get in and off the field he lined his team up right away took the snap and took it the distance just fried it down the field that's what that's what Glanville's argue about right now he feels like his team didn't have a chance to match up he's really upset about it because Robert laws I was watching the entire Turner who's trying to call timeout there's another look boobers thousand taking over there and then going deep with the play by Eddie Brown he Xion at the entire way when I'm a strong safety the rookie Bubba McDowell when you're trying to farm away me we should get a chance to match up the continuing complaint throughout the league that [Applause] offensive substitution and McNeil the defense has to be allowed to have one I don't believe that the Bengals had a substitution I think that they just which snapped they just got from the ball with the people that they hadn't we think Ahmad that he had ten guys on the [Applause] Sam is very happy with the way this turned out yelling encouragement to his team that mic again is he I know not yet not just yet we know what he ran across the field last week he wasn't going to sing the national and or shake hands with Chuck Knox though it is a 21 to nothing game Cincinnati in the lady Lee Johnson set the kickoff again [Applause] boomer esiason a very heading he runs this quick snap often so well threw the ball so he concluded ten of his first 12 passes that's the way he started last week [Applause] June 20 the referee I think this could be a warning I think he's warning saying a barn right now this might be over 21 is about seven points too long the history of rallying from behind they did it in similar conditions a couple of weeks ago at Pittsburgh looks like the Steelers had and then them Oilers rallied to win it they did it last week also down [Applause] hildine [Applause] Ray Perkins the coach of Tampa Bay said after the game I've said it before and I'll say it again the others had going to the Super Bowl jerry glanville did not take that as a compliment though [Applause] downfield kick goes to Tracy Johnson [Applause] down the others go on offense in the galleys at the 25-yard line neither to our viewers to stay tuned on most of these NBC stations for the second game of our football doubleheader most of you see the Buffalo Bills take on the defending Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers others will see the Jets versus the LA Rams check your local listings for the game in your area one of the things that does work against the team in the cold weather it's his offense of Houston has been on the sidelines for quite a while and no matter what your mind is doing your body is getting cold why are you standing over there sannan-san video for the Houston Oilers makes a throw downfield sure handed drew Hill coming back of the ball control brings up second down in tenth and then yet joke Kelly one of the linebackers covering I think that was a result of being told you stand over there a lot time your feet get cold your knees everything gets all cold and you just don't have that fluidity it takes a while the worst thing that can happen to an offense in the cold weather game is to have to sit on the sidelines [Applause] repossessions now drew he'll make the play that's enough humble the ruling that blue hill caught the ball then fumbled it [Applause] standing inside a cure from Tennessee after the ball Hill here coming up with a nice stretch has the ball now and then it just gives you some I don't know if he really had possession that book didn't fear reading that he actually brought that ball into his body [Applause] hurry up offense true Karl's ending with a nice play but Cincinnati trying to use the hurry-up offense trying to beat the replay official hoping they could get a play going before they took another look at this and that's what they're doing here taking another look at it so we'll show you another look at it warning crying a Jew Hill to Rios upsets our melons he brings it down it doesn't appear to me that he really had possession of that ball lack of staff with 424 to play in the first quarter and the Bengals in the game they must win are up in front what he won de nothing well there's another look through he'll stretching out as he brings the ball in now the ball is out of his hands and on the ground and it just doesn't appear to me that this is a catch and a fumble I don't think he ever had control of it and I really think that that come as a lot to do with you set a receiver to sideline a long turn and this whether you get very cold and a lot of catches that you make that a routine catches for we all of a sudden become very hard and that's what happened it drew heel that was high praise Ahmad that Sam watch head for Warren Moon yesterday when we met with Sam saying of the quarterbacks we've studied the two most accurate the NFL our Jill Montana and Warren Moon [Applause] [Music] there's whites well pleased with the way it's developing now for his team he's always after the efficient filling a lot of he's joining it he's trying to get the repo people there hurry up they're gonna reverse this because it just wasn't clear that he had that ball before it got away from him and Sam just wanting something to happen quickly I'm sure a lot of the players do too [Applause] okay [Applause] there is another angle at this you watch drew heel outstretched as he brings the ball down now right now it starts to come out I just don't think in his possession before it got out of there a very good call by the replay officials [Applause] so Warren Moon of the Oilers maintained possession [Music] they need some reps they need to get this offerings going they need [Applause] plays off in a row downfield throw it catches made and the spot is going to be at very friendly spot it would seem for the Oilers after the 35 yard line that's where they had to go falling back in the ball bro Hill looked like he was behind the 35 now you said third now and ten I think they got Tim in like 1/3 yard Dru Hill making a catch where they mark that ball and they market rather than 35 which gives him a first down drew he has been hurt a lot missed a lot of training camp but at 33 that that all that does is save your legs he is the big play receiver on this football team [Applause] and a great great players in Los Angeles rammed through eleventh year misuse would the rails but all we did was hand the ball off to the running back taking an animal I'm so Highsmith number 32 and I Smith his knock down at about the 38 yard line a gain of about three on the play now in the second quarter at Cleveland stadium Vikings the brown still with nothing up goggles rallied aside Green Bay I am he continues to lead the Colts by three it's Burke still has a playoff shot things would have to break their way they have to win their last two there are seven and 17 and in command up to England the moment [Applause] going from a shotgun second down and seven drew Hale is open and he's across the midfield line down to the 47 yard line of the bangles so the Oilers hit a big play that they need so badly a 15-yard gain of first down one of the things about these other offenses they do have the big play capabilities and the people in the talent positions to pull it off one of them is Dru Hill wide open again what you've got to do to stop this see that this Euler offense is you have to be able to match up man for man on their four receivers which is almost impossible and that's where you find guys cutting through your run somebody's going to have us [Music] so white first down Terry the head for maybe two yards Jason buck number 99 defensive em was on the play along with Crum ride game clock down to 240 to play in the first quarter clock running in the Bengals in command 21 to nothing the Oilers every now and then draw on the sneak they're running for in trying to control Joe Kelly Carl's in your wider Reggie room those Cincinnati linebacker to try to keep them out of those bathrooms see simple sand [Applause] now it would appear that only [Applause] knock her down before the snap of the ball is faded it was a second down and nine play had to be a mix-up most of the offensive line went on warning the ball is hiked them to go further down [Applause] if you watch them to a hud-1 and all the linemen go and cut to him he hacks it to get that together J Penniston the Euler Center and a very good one miss connection early in the game or in this game around moon fumbled the opening snap Oilers lead the league in penalties do you get an award for that they usually give an award for most other categories are the ratings of that Super Bowl winning years Ahmad as you know [Applause] that's an award damn field pro and take it in I threw Hill this time for a 17-yard gain now you can see what Sam White's meant when he said Warren Moon is so accurate he threw this ball right by Cincinnati defend it there was only one place where he could throw the ball and he put it right there and Dru Hill with a fine reception Warren looking for Julie all the entire time now watch his balls right on a line he throws it right in between two Cincinnati have been a wild-card team the past two that one of the visional championship outright since the American Football League in 1967 David fuller [Music] [Applause] strong safety recovered the opening fumble now comes up with a second turnover the earlier drivers David Coulter was his sick interceptor this season in this offense the receiver and the quarterback have to read the same thing when looking at a defense furnace opening to the inside [Applause] once they were 81 Ernest givins he comes down here and goes over the middle now when he turns right who throws the ball back left [Applause] action pass to Tim McGee [Applause] often go to Tim McGee as his hyacinth looking for him he's now dump it off to James Brooks he's out to midfield it's a first down a 12-yard gain in the first inside linebacker John Grimsley with a knock-down 240 pounds from safety David Pilcher from Arizona State with two turnovers today this is the play that the bingos like to do as you sit down once they get a turnover they like to trim try to come back with a big play he can't find Tim McGee but he does find [Music] [Applause] James Brooks [Applause] do it 21-nothing lead late in the first quarter they go to the rock [Applause] to the 45 yard line first down carry was good for about for Johnny Meade's an outside backer 91 and Al Smith 54 were on the stop for the Oilers another thing the Oilers were really worried about is that if Cincinnati got a lead on him if they could get a 10-point lead then all of a sudden they've used that big ol huge offensive line to control the rest of the game well they have a 21-point lead and I got a feeling it sooner or later they're going to just start pounding that ball away at Houston hold as it is and boomers on a roll he's completed his last seven passes like I said earlier cold days our receivers days there is no way a great day to throw the ball Regt there's no wind a second down Kari busted up the middle for 10 yards and yet another Cincinnati first down and there's internet egos with that they got that huge offensive line in the fruit that takes a lot of pride in running the ball and they'd like to run the ball every single play they had to come into a game [Applause] for the first quarter of play as the bangles have taken to man 21 to nothing [Applause] my dream car would be a Nissan ha ha ha [Music] Oh make that the mountainous there's nobody around set my girl and a pizza in my boss somebody's got to watch the truck it's a Radio Shack Merry Christmas once you get the boy radio checks radio-controlled cars a dual speed white tiger turbo with spring suspension to hug the road a high-speed Golden Arrow Ohio State New Year's Day the best bowls are on NBC Sports [Music] Cincinnati Bengal offense has been downloaded in this game primarily with the throwing game in the very cold weather I asked him with two touchdown foes to Eddie Brown James Brooks with a 14 yard touchdown run we're set now for the start of the second quarter 21 to nothing Houston is beaten Cincinnati five of the last six times they played and there is Hickey woods there on the port when I was playing the only thing you got off of bench would splinter now you go over there to get warm those big blowers over there like to have one in this booth right about now you say it's ten degrees I don't believe it it was 10 below last night well GBC [Applause] the hot suit is the Houston Oilers defense assassin calling today from the - truly he says that the Oilers have a problem with the quick snap off end fake reverse James Brooke the heads of the 31-yard line on a first down in ten played ahead for a gain of about five Vikings in the brown still scoreless in a most important game at Cleveland stadium I mean with another field goal from stay out of it now extends its lead to six over the Colts and to City very much in the playoff run with a three point lead over San Diego at Casey very much alive with a 14 to 3 lead in the second quarter over New England win the division outright with a win today if they should come back or with the women home next 17 at the Astrodome in a rare Saturday night game against the Cleveland Brown riggan fuller left about five minutes early yeah a lot early actually [Applause] check things and see if there's any motion in the offensive line vote 95 defense William fuller just a little bit ahead of the snap actually a lolly analyst now if they still have a snap the ball yet and that's one of the things that deepens environment learn how to do when you jump outside just point than anybody right what you'll do you'll jump outside nobody moves but watches right here watch I'm gonna try to blame it on somebody about that [Applause] at least do that a lot of defensive quarterbacks and they'd all pro by pointing at the other guy with a touchdown fast as if it wasn't his man but grant you said you liked about the man-to-man [Music] second dad in less than one day might be putting it up here she likes to go deep look into throw heap knock down on a set William fuller the guilty party and coachman quickly comes back with a sack of Boomer Esiason almost looked like Buller wasn't blocked at all no bullet just so much and go right it's an excellent shot at Boomer Esiason referee Jim Tammy whistles with [Applause] [Music] Oh karin-sama Houston [Applause] that's what they tried to do the last time that Cincinnati had this quick snap off this was called timeout still the Bengals by 21 the writers of Motor Trend magazine wrote tested a lot of cars before the Mitsubishi collage they wrote tested a lot of cars after it but no other car was so well conceived so when prompted so thoroughly satisfying to drive and that is why they marked the occasion in the most significant way they could they named the Mitsubishi Galant Motor Trend import car of the year [Music] they got off a bomb for a touchdown didn't work this time he got the attention of official and Robert louse called a timeout they say Robert louse is one of the most intelligent guys I was talking to Floyd recent linebacker coach say this black could play almost any position very intelligent tender knees been out three weeks with a knee injury the P dependence Sasson go to the run Stanford Jennings doesn't find much there on a first down intense way he takes the ball down to the 16 yard line we still have 12 and a half minutes to play in the first half bangles are in the lead 21 to nothing and Liao's in on that tackle they also say he is the spiritual leader of this football team he's the guy that came up with the House of Pain dona 6-tier linebacker out of TCU bothered [Applause] that as the season was and the 4th straight win today [Applause] take a look pattern Stanford team [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the second and nine we got about a we'll be third and short now for Cincinnati very nice move by Stanford Jennings trying to spin inside and pick up that first down and he did pick it up very nice move watch at the end of this play Boomer Esiason looking downfield knowing that he always have stand for Jennings out here in the flat now what's running in Stanford getting makes us the twisted move back inside and gets the first down Stanford ginning a guy who plays every position on his offense [Applause] and very valued performer on the bengal team the 60-year running out of Furman stands for Jennings now the play fake is the fall [Music] [Applause] working to perfection as holman comes down with the ball cassadee you he leaves all NFL tight ends and TV receptions and the Houston Oilers had a been thinking about that once the dome and flame Cleveland next Saturday night because they sure out in this one that's a very tough position of being Glanville Nosek that geo one of the the game thinking well the news this one will win the the author says if there's a easy way and a hard way to do something we'll find the hard way and that was the concern this morning [Applause] they might not play well in the coal they did a couple of weeks ago at Pittsburgh [Applause] they do Alonzo Highsmith and he got only about four the others come up short again as they start up after the play both these teams were warned by referee Jim Tony mixing up the last time they played with two or three fights before the game it was embarrassing gonna start a factory behind 28-nothing may not hide see how things like that happened early on in the season I'm the early on in the game but as the game wears on you burned by 28 points I think that your concern should be trying to get some points on the board not fighting is a blowout at this point 28-nothing will be switching some of you to the close Miami at Indianapolis game everyone in the Cincinnati area and in the Houston area stay with us game go out Jones and Lilla Nelson at Indianapolis where the dolphins and the Colts are hooked up last week forth Miami is leading by six there's a punt downfield by Montgomery Richard Gary is back for Cincinnati on the 12 yard line he weaves his way out across the 15 is the ball on the field and the Oilers City heaven so does the official [Applause] [Music] then of the closest discipline looks like first he's been taking a vow he was the one that pulled that ball out of carries arms phoned a recovery you threw fish down with this often set the Houston Oilers have watching right now Dishman now putting his rider over the top of the ball now he starts to yank there's the ball on the ground Dishman is down on top of it big play in the first big play for the Houston Oilers [Applause] a43 to go in the first half after a second look [Applause] [Music] it is a recovery [Applause] touchdown earlier [Applause] or a moon goes to micros year here are markers in coming in from the umpire and pacing the quarterback off on an offensive holding call Jason buck was on the stop viewing lead tackler Mike Munchak was the guilty culprit on that he goes justice you watch [Music] right to the middle of your screen there you see Mike Munchak number 63 going just stay here before the snap of the ball Mike Munchak a first-team all-pro player 7th year from Penn State Rose have a very good offensive line [Applause] terrific people up front maybe the biggest kinda left a Cohen Bruce [Applause] it's first and 15 for Warren Moon here's an open receiver and Dru Hill running up on the defense beats Eric Thomas for an 11-yard gain down to the 9 yard line [Applause] alonzo highsmith has been so upset he's now I him into Italian allora going at it but here you see Drew Hill just a little out ball from running out of the slot that should be a gimme all day you line up the receiver in the slot and then the quarterback just has to chasing the entire time rollerball and rhythm you should be able to [Applause] moon kept his team steam started the day with a game and a half late in the AFC Central they go to the run a straight-ahead carry after very many yards down to about the 5-yard line Alonzo Highsmith got the call now they look where they're looking for the past they give the ball underneath the highsmith and he sort of stumbles through though he could have kept his feet he might ended up in the endzone I spent used to playing down there [Applause] ask him about this bowl whether he yesterday there's nothing I can do it I just go out and free they have the coach at Texas Southern University in Houston [Applause] now at 7:59 to play at timeout is called by the bengals and warren moon gets a chance to get some counsel it's a Radio Shack Merry Christmas America Shops at Radio Shack for everything in radios radios for was obvious from the very beginning that our house was no longer happy I called my agent and told them we needed to find temporary housing and then 48 hours all state had written me a check to pay for our moving expenses and for a rhythm I expected bean pushers and I got sensitive people instead the headlines today on NFL live Mike Shanahan offensive coordinator of the Broncos turning down a reported $600,000 year contract to coach the University of Kentucky Ralph Wiley reporting that Alabama junior Keith McCants will leave school to enter the NFL he by acclimation is rated the number one player in the college ranks this year by every professional scout Jerry Glanville says the Oilers play better when of both opposing fans Pugh them nobody's booing now perhaps he wishes they would lanville told us yesterday you're mad that the team that has possession last is probably going to win it turned out the team that had possession first is probably going to lose because his team fumbled and the Bengals took it right in he's had a great year yeah they just have not been able to get anything going but I still think 28 points is not enough [Applause] you pointed out the Oilers won't quit no they won't and they have this high-powered offense that has the ability to score quickly once they start throwing that ball they throw it all over the field [Applause] it's first down and goal from the five-yard line for Houston Oilers down 28 to nothing pitch back Lorenzo white put on him Xander was one of the League tacklers along with Ricky Dixon 29 a former number one out of Oklahoma it's like a rocket you want to talk about I always say that you know quarterbacks don't like the tackle if you take a pistol Ricky Nixon came up and just exploded through this tackle I could say some cornerback don't like the tackle Ricky Dixon you know he's a safety [Applause] it brings up second down and goal from the 3 yard line [Applause] Rogier he's down close but he's not in yes he is now I see a free ball cincinnati has [Applause] laughs get a turnover get down close and then puff it up GIP McCrimmon is again with the ball nice hozier trying to fight to get into the end zone all that traffic there the ball just comes losing [Applause] we have a moment left switch to than my Indianapolis gained Charlie Townsend Merlin Olsen [Applause] 702 to play here at Cincinnati the bangles are holding to a [Applause] recovery of a Rozier fumble in the ends [Applause] this game so far has stopped [Applause] first and ten at their 20 Glanville wants the official to explain the what happened he just came out of his headsets here's a repo you'll see Mike Rozier with the ball here he pounds it down inside now he appears to be he's still going forward now the ball is loose he was on the ground though when the ball went loose his knee was down they'll be looking again we'll find out [Applause] Watchmen Rozier is arguing and so is glamour that he was down already [Music] number 30 my Crozier hits up in there now he's still driving forward now he's down the ball comes out skip McClendon falls on this boiler team has known some bad days they started the season we saw the mad losing 38 to 7 in Minnesota [Applause] destroyed at Kansas City 34 nothing to behind 28 to nothing today well along the way they've managed to win nine games and they started this day in command of the NFC Central one more win for Jerry Glanville Soilers either today which is unlikely or next Saturday night against the Browns when the others will be a definite favorite in the Astrodome and Houston goes in is undisputed champion of the AFC central pitch back to Erick Paul on push down he's a head out to the 25-yard line [Applause] we're back Steve Brown number 24 was on the stop for the Houston Oilers and skip a Clinton number 72 for the Bengals has been playing very well in the absence of Jim scow he's come up with big plays I mean a lot of times when Scout goes down and a lot of teams coming in and they try to pick on McClendon and McClinton has been really coming to play every single week and playing very well be playing the air by recovering at finals back to touch him this big lead a mathematician to see how long that keepeth iesson in [Music] they're not done yet the iessons still pitching and Rodney Holman catching on a second down and four play he's ahead for six yards in a first down an assassin is just surpassed a 3,000 yard mark passing for a fifth straight season fells Most Valuable Player 1988 well done I think they're going to leave them in quite a while because as we mentioned at the outset of the game these bingos want to beat up on the Oilers they wanted they want to not only beat him on the scoreboard but put some physical hurt on them so that Cleveland have a chance to beat him next week the Vikings are still scoreless in the first in the second quarter at Cleveland Stadium Eric fall in motion on a first down in tenth place of the bangles free ball and it looks like the Oilers heaviness for 28 yard-line [Applause] Richard Byrd number 71 comes up with the ball here's another look you just see boomer does not get the snap and this does not happen very often when you want we talked abou mer yesterday about his ball handling ability and he actually knocked on wood said well you know we haven't had had a fumble from the exchange between ascending the quarterback in a long time because we really take a lot of time and working on this and a day later it happens boilers have turned it over three times in the first half [Applause] here's the throw and again drew Hill is open and dancing into the secondary cutting out quickly on a timing pattern good for a 17-yard gaze it's going to be first down and 10 at the 14 yard line minnesota with the big powerful offers kiss three points Vikings up on the Browns in the second quarter three nothing they've had a lot of problems with their offense and so is Cleveland and it shows on the scoreboard cults have taken a 14 to 13 lead over Miami at halftime they see with two field goals by Lowry up six nothing on San Diego scalers lead at the half and so do the Lions Kansas City they can believe is about out of everybody everybody believes is they're a good team right now unbeaten in the last four weeks a time free win we saw him early in the season they had a great defense just getting their offense together now it appears they got it all together great quarterbacking from the bird five minutes in 14 seconds to play in the first test ball position at the 14 yard line of Cincinnati Oilers have yet to get on the board they were close to the last possession but Rozier fumble at the goal line it was recovered by McClendon in the end zone for a touchback now it's first down in camp to the end zone kicked off again Billups number 24 had both hands on the ball but couldn't hold it [Applause] second down from the 15-yard line [Music] Ernest givins streaking down the middle of the endzone but there was a quite a few black jerseys between Gibbons and Warren Moon Warren tried to just throw it right between them and lucky they didn't get that ball intercepted [Applause] that's in the shotgun success in cold weather but says he's never liked playing in there's a throw and it's rock Heywood riki Dixon 29 gave me some help and it was a perfect strike thrown by Warren Moon the Jeffries couldn't hold [Applause] great throw by warren moon he put the three receivers on the other side and leave Joey turns Phillips that's Rickey Dixon he turns around once Geoffrey's here watch this is a great round here now watch Dixon take the outside fake turns around the balls right on the money then he just can't hang on to cincinnati fraud rises up it is third down and ten for the Oilers and in the end zone incomplete diving for the ball [Applause] [Music] and the owners are sending out their field goal kicker that's right get off the schneid get on the board they're down 28 to nothing [Music] [Applause] most out of ten [Applause] we won't see Jeffries drop mini balls and I guarantee you he's very upsetting himself for dropping that one touchdown opportunity [Applause] 32-yard attempt because on the way it is fun up they're good all going wrong for the Oilers and they just can't fix it David Coulter starts up with Dishman both her backs away only because he doesn't want a penalty that would last about five seconds he doesn't want Dishman reason nearby bulging out ways to survive pounds and when Zendaya's miss the first one that congratulating was David Fulcher which Chris Dishman didn't like the Fulshear factor I like there was a tape let's just tell the tape he strong safety in football this year last January talking to the pencil coordinator Dick LeBeau on the sidelines now them bangles ready to go again after the missed field goal they'll start from there 20 [Applause] Paul it's an open field and yardline he's out to the 37 first down run good for 17 yards in a first down tackle on the play by the free safety Jeff Donaldson it was a great block on that play by Stanford Jennings we talked about Stanford Jennings being able to do it all he was the one that said Eric ball loose if you watched amber Jennings number 36 leading the play watch his kick-out block that's what sets it all up now on the sudden it's just a sprint for Eric ball great block by Ginny's comes right back with a great run good first seven yards on a first down play Bengals now taking some time off the clock with their big leave o'clock shows four minutes and running in the second quarter I talked to Stanford genic I said well how do you how do you you know how do you divide up your week you play every position he says I take snaps at every position at least a few times during the course of the week one day I'll play fullback one day tailback one day wide receiver and he plays it all very well Baptists and OJ Simpson at halftime [Applause] make more semblance out of this vinyl drive to the playoffs the American Conference with white oak antigone was opening wide open and his iesson is holding his head because he missed an open receiver Bob and OJ will be doing that halftime from the warmth of a studio at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York I think I think they should probably turn the air conditioning I've just give him a feel of the game out here Tomer a little upset that he missed that one Bengals have been tough going out and third down they have one coming up now five of our 13 11 straight conflation just wait 26 as you see to go in the first half 28 to nothing Cincinnati [Applause] Eric wha late knuckle cacklers 59 we got him a penalty mark he comes Johnson 22 to stop also Kenny Johnson the man they call legend of he's been nine legendary late hit though [Applause] defense late hit once again we take a look at the play again really hard to tip I look like Donelson man maybe came up late and slid into that pile you know when you get that reputation of getting anything that moves it seems time you come up on a follow up there'd be going to get a flag [Applause] at the end of the play first Alan [Applause] active-safety but a lot of time you got to know when to pull off when you're acting like that you're going to get some of these kind of penalties he hit his own man still got a penalty to drive the bangles our lives now the 36-yard line [Applause] stand for Jenny at 48 yard line [Applause] Terri's good for about nine using lost a shoe got to come out here and get Rashad [Applause] Matt Jennings is a versatile player catches drum returns picks and a big return on a suit they also block she picks up Blitzen [Applause] the spot is good for an eight-yard gain that makes it second down and two now for Cincinnati [Applause] fifteen to go first half I patterned attend the game and he has gone back from the 20 [Music] position the ball [Music] he has the first down get a chance to see how strong Boomer sizes arm is on that he had the gun this fall out there and he taken a little bit off that ball Dishman when I had a chance to make this interception and go the distance the other way but when you got a big gun like boomer you can just fire up here that's today 14 and 17 you know we have Luke seen a lot of James Brooks how he heaven here you see this shot again boomer just flies it out there to McGee on a rope now it becomes a pushing shoving match right here but grant used to tell me that they call this roughing it [Applause] the celebration going on early in Cincinnati [Music] when you gather round for the holidays there's no better beer to have around than Michelob look for our tree at your store and have a happy holiday [Music] astronomers tell us there won't be a total eclipse in America until the year 2017 they are very much mistaken this is the year of the Eclipse introducing the Eclipse by Mitsubishi try not to stare [Music] stubborn mr. Scrooge loves the new stuffing in the 5-piece holiday meal deal from Kentucky Fried Chicken born 89 socratic with a ten-piece holiday meal only $9.99 sinking project get the 5 or 10 piece holiday meal deal the Black & Decker workmate about all it can't help you do is clean up but at least it gets out of your way the Black & Decker workmate the bills but 49ers next among the features of NFL live at halftime today Oh Jay Simpson I'm joe Montana's maybe all-time season it seems every year he has one I think it's pretty funny to hear old Jay talking about it for but here's the guy that the wars hands in the history of any football player I've ever seen talking about a quarterback but before could he run the ball he didn't run it a lot didn't know he can run it like no one else I've ever seen but he dropped more balls bulges to beat him up in breakfast hit him all in the head in the game eat catch him off the back of his helmet anywhere there's James Brooks being held out now because he is playing with a nice train played very well I was in remember the 14 yard touchdown run second score the game with this big lead they don't want to risk him he's got to go again next week the final game for the Bengals will be at Minneapolis on Christmas night yes the Vikings at the moment Lisa Braun three nothing last report I assume with a zone two cats Eddie Brown running in the open field is down inside the 15 yard an 11-yard game in a purse down we're trying to get his team rallied back up near the line of scrimmage that is a tough catch to catch you got to come all the way across the field and never looking back you always have the fear that you're gonna run in headlong into an ailment great catch by any brand [Music] looking to nail the lid on before half-time if in fact they haven't done that already leading 28 to nothing first down pitch back Erik Paul Jennings box ball lunges and gets to the 12 yard line maybe back to the line of scrimmage perhaps a yard ahead tackle on the play William fuller 95 and L sniff 54 [Applause] a 300-pound nose tackle for the Oilers and Doug Smith came into this game with a bad so I asked him what was wrong with so he just admit my my toe hurts you know about that turf toe stuff and you wait 300 plus pounds that till plays a big role in your career if you thought you had to give up comfort to get a close shave norelco says think again their revolutionary shaving system shaves skin clothes in a way that's incredibly comfortable as the hair enters the chamber the patented lift & cut system lifts each hair and holds it a split second before a blade cuts it so it's possible to shave skin close without the blades even touching the skin the lift and cut shaving system from norelco we made close comfortable with Ahmad Rashad versus don crookie back at Cincinnati halftime score Cleveland Vikings up three nothing other halftime scores Packers up on the Bears Indianapolis rallying from behind and take a one-point lead on the Miami Dolphins at halftime the Anza city continues to roll but not by that not San Diego playing well in cold weather I've seen them do that before they beat us one year on a way to the playoffs in late December came in from that sunny San Diego to that free that sunny hit was sunny in Minneapolis that day what the temperature was about 80 and they beat us big Doug Smith still down a big oil or no Steckle they're looking at his left leg the number one defensive player for the Oilers ray Childress is out of this game and could be out for some games to come he has a broken fibula in his leg said he's taking it day by day I talked to him before the game he you know he said he played with a stress fracture a few years ago and Doug Smith is finally up that's a very good sign that he's walking off the field but speaking about Ray Childress he said he's taking it day to day he really doesn't know if he'll play next week or not [Applause] that's me the Anna's ankle take a different kind of way trying to keep the pressure off that toe you never know how painful these things can be until you hurt your big toe that's four fifths of your foot you can hurt a little toe and you're alright but you hurt that big toe and it it takes away the way you walk you gotta walk and roll over the outside of your foot it throws your whole body off but Childre saying that he doesn't have a cast on his leg he wants to keep the job that keeps him blood flowing and maybe it will heal the bone a little quicker talk about playing hurt looking to come back with a broken leg it is [Music] conceivably he could be back right now we have second down I am 10 to go from the 12 yard line for Cincinnati 11 seconds to go in the first half hi Eric Paul that will be third down and 10 Jon Jones number 96 got a big rush on Esiason as did Johnny Meade's lifts in from the outside backer position Sam white talking about stop putting up Oilers beat him and soften him up for Cleveland and also sing that plan from the sidelines as I mentioned earlier everybody in that offensive huddle knows that play when he puts up his fingers in a certain formation the entire offense can look at him and know what play is coming up it's not just a signal to the quarterback but the entire team he's been a good day for Cincinnati not just here but also pleased for the Vikings to beat the Browns that browse to beat the Oilers straight ahead carry down inside the ten yard line latest report Doug sniffing east rain he should be back that's good news for Doug Smith in the oiler and also good news for his young son who just had a birthday on the 13th Doug Smith the third young nose tackle that's right dad's all right [Applause] Jim brakes coming out to try a field goal attempt now 31 seconds and running mangles have done it alright first play of the game really turned the whole game first play from scrimmage Warren Moon missed the snap from the center it was quickly recovered by Cincinnati and three plays later on a 22 yard throw from Esiason to Eddie Brown the Bengals were on the board and they've rolled since them extending their lead to 28 to nothing position is a 9-yard line the clock ran out excellent I'm out Paulus Tanev so there's a timeout with 14 seconds to play in the first half Cincinnati getting set for a field goal try by Jim breeze [Music] 28 to nothing bengals again the scenario Houston goes into the playoffs with a wind today or next Saturday night against Cleveland winning one of its final two games the Oilers go in that only as a playoff team but as an outright divisional champion and so guests on the scene get ready for a big trip next week dad himself is here Sam watch has gotten a few gifts today Panozzo island he certainly has in turnovers [Applause] the 27-yard field goal by Jim breeze turns it up then good bangles now extend their lead to 31 to nothing [Applause] where's Jerry Glanville goat is from here he has a lot of pressure on him you just don't want to be in a situation where they tell you all you got to do is win one of your next two you know you gotta win the next one when you start thinking about one of the next two all the does just put a lot of pressure on you for the next week I'm sure glamor would like to win the championship here today they're gonna have to really go some to try gotta win this football game but you certainly don't want to go home thinking that it's just a given that you don't lose in the House of Pain and you're going to be Cleveland next week that's not a given at all and that live is coming up shortly right now with ten seconds to play the Cincinnati Bengals are ready to kick off yet again to the Houston Oilers an unlikely season for Glanville we talked about those route losses his team has suffered 38 - 7 of the Vikings 34 to nothing to Kansas City they're down 31 before half-time today yet they're in a position to win their title the league took the Central Division title and subsequently the conference championship Sam watches Bengals need two wins and a lot of help it's so far all the things they need are holding up Vikings are leading Cleveland and the Bengals are burying the Oilers you take a look at this Cincinnati sideline see the players kind of standing around you look on the Oilers sideline there isn't an empty seat on that hot dish it's crowded over there you think the guys might be reflecting on some other the next one now the squid kick of all as Johnson and he gets to the 36 yard line and Brady makes the tackle as we're down to three seconds to play in the first half landfill's unlikely season surviving all those rot losses and also a snakebite the snake succumbed eats right all that stuff away for a win here today here's Paul Brown the living legend over there [Applause] more coaches that have had more great things to say about Paul Brown you know but RIT played for power yeah Great Lakes yeah he largely said he learned a lot from Paul Brown lot of his coaching techniques still a major part a lot of coaches today [Music] [Applause] [Music] and the first half ends on an interception david Fulcher receptions in the first half career he told me yesterday the world's largest safety is ready to roll [Applause] are the vengo here in the jungle as they go to the locker room in a must-win game with a 31 to nothing lead on the Houston Oilers it all went wrong early for the Oilers and they've bangles that kept pouring it on from here david Folger was sick earlier in the week said he had the flu and didn't feel well but he said he'd feel great but they started it's a very nice play by David Koepp designing the ball ball bounces up he catches on the second rebound NFL live is coming up next here on NBC Sports as the Cincinnati Bengals have taken command 31 to nothing over the division leader the Houston Oilers if I had a Nissan 240sx it'd be a red coupe wait a silver fastback and I go for a spin of Route seven the twisty part just be an ass you know Amy heck Christie Brinkley Wow yeah lien crispy in my silver no red 240sx driving into the sunset we have [Music] [Applause] but by he was privy to swearing the fan this guy did not know [Music] I'm no one problem when we refer our team we can all be winners if we lead the action to the players on the field and not in the stands don't you rock the boat [Applause] [Music] I'm Jim Kelly Corey back in the Buffalo Bills asking you not to rough the boat remember to be courteous and considerate to your fellow fans don't party too hard before or during the game and drive home safely after the game don't you rock the boat this message furnished by the National Football League NBC Sports coverage of the National Football League is brought to you by Nissan built for the human race stay Firestone of all the last-minute gifts you can buy ones appreciated more than all the rest McDonald's gift certificates the McDonald's hamburger Happy Meals just got happier cuz now it's only a dollar ninety-nine it has the same great taste inside it even has the same great toy but evening news watch weeknights at 7 o'clock [Music] okay bob costas back along with OJ Simpson the Oilers as everybody knows had won five of six to put themselves in position to clinch the AFC Central if they won today at Cincinnati but in that stretch of five victories and six games their lone defeat was a game where they were really waxed at Arrowhead and now the same thing is happening to them on the road at Riverfront against the Bengals well evidently they they're a team that tend to get a little axe that came that they lost the Kansas City was 34 nothing they're getting waxed as you said the day 31 zip they've been the most consistent team in the AFC along with Kansas City the second half of the season I think they may rely a little too much on the yura of the House of Pain where they're gonna play Cleveland next week and of course if they win that game they'll still win their division all right so Houston with the four turnovers in the first half including Rozier fumbling near the goal line on their best scoring chance David Fulcher just having a great year at strong safety for the Bengals two interceptions and a fumble recovery the fumble recovery on the first play from scrimmage by Houston setting up the 1st Cincinnati touchdown Boomer Esiason with three touchdown passes two of them to Eddie Brown James Brooks a 14 yard scoring run everything clicking for the Bengals they'll stay alive in the playoff chase leading 31 nothing at halftime Minnesota in a defensive struggle in very cold Cleveland 10 degrees and the temperature plummeting from there 10 degrees at game time they lead three nothing over the Browns who in their last four games have a tie and three defeats rich Carlos with a 45-yard field goal in the second quarter that's all the scoring to this point Chicago just got a touchdown at Soldier Field and they close it up a bit against the Packers 27 21 Don Makowski has thrown the touchdown pass to perry kemp he has run 17 yards for another score Neal Anderson had a big first half for the Bears 5 carries for 87 yards plus a touchdown reception of 21 yards from Jim Harbaugh and the Bears are hanging in there down six against Green Bay the Packers are eight and six and the Bears six and eight and out of the playoff chase Indianapolis just widened their lead at home over Miami the Dolphins had the lead early the Colts just got a Dickerson touchdown and lead now by 2113 Don Shula knows if he wins today and next week at home against Kansas City he's a wild card at least no matter what happen anywhere else and things were looking good when Scotch ladies fielded this Ron stark plot and brought it back 70 yards for a touchdown and attend nothing Miami lead in the first quarter glum expression for Ron Meyer but then Reggie Roby has a punt blocked on him for only the second time in his career Chris goob blocked it and returned it almost for a touchdown moments later mark Boyer is on the return receiving end of this pass from Jack Trudeau off the play fake and this is the Dickerson touchdown capping their first drive of the third quarter and they increased their lead to 21 thirteen still early in the third against the Dolphins the Colts are 7 and 7 the Dolphins are 8 and 6 Kansas City at home and leading San Diego 13 to 7 and this one three charger turnovers helping Kansas City's cause Pittsburgh midway through the third quarter at Three Rivers with a 14-3 lead on the Patriots the Steelers do have a shot at a wild card but everything has to fall into place they've got to win today and next week against Tampa Bay and almost all the other wildcard contenders have to lose in order for it to work out for Chuck Noel's team and Detroit is closing the season with a rush they've increased their lead just moments ago on an Eddie Murray field goal to 27 nothing in the third quarter at home against Tampa Bay both these teams are 5 and 9 but Detroit has won three in a row and four of their last five Barry Sanders is closing in on a hundred yards he had 90 in the first half including a four yard touchdown run for the Lions Bob Galliano threw for two scores one of two yards to Richard Johnson another of 55 yards to Jason Phillips and the Lions are cruising at 27 nothing we cruise out of here for a minute when we come back Oh Jay has a look at the remarkable season Joe Montana is enjoying for the San Francisco 49ers we do it following these messages from your local station he's ruthless and cunning get him out of my sight and threatens a town by taking a child hostage where's a little girl it doesn't work like that now a desperado must save the town a girl and the woman he loves she really matter that much to you he's got two desperado bad lads justice collect once upon a time there was a guy named Goldilocks who was thirsting for refreshment but this one and this one till then he moved to Diet Coke and it was just right the real Cola taste you can drink more because it's just one calorie Hey family counseling crittenden services 90 years of helping studios in New York as we told you earlier Joe Montana will not start for the 49ers today against Buffalo still that doesn't do anything to diminish the year he's having possibly the best ever in the NFL a look at the current quarterback rating shows that Montana is in a class by himself giving renewed meaning to the word greatness here's OJ now with more on Joe Montana Webster defines it as being uncommon Lee gifted Ally put it in his own words [Music] Gretzky added it to his signature in 1989 Joe Montana may bring it to a new level he is in the midst of a career year and a career marked by greatness the three Super Bowl wins on his resume and the comeback victory is his personal trademark Montana is on a pace to eclipse both the single-season quarterback rating record held by the Browns no plum in 1960 and the completion percentage standard set by the Bengals Ken Anderson already the career leader in both categories Montana remains focused on the thing that brought into this level the more important thing is winning and I think when when your team is doing well and you're winning those kind of things just kind of go hand in hand with it he really has an enthusiasm for the game and loves to play and it's still a game for him and I think that's one of the secrets to success he's got a young man in him that just likes to play games and so he hasn't it hasn't gotten old hat to him old hat to Joe Montana means performance under pressure that combined with a few playbook modifications and a more balanced pass attack equals higher efficiency in 1989 we went into training camp this year thinking that two things one we had to take a little heat off Jerry and take the little heat off Roger at halftime the Cincinnati Bengals continue to lead the Houston Oilers 31 to nothing it was 21 to nothing in the first quarter and it got worse for the Oilers after that down quickie with an ex piking Ahmad Rashad who didn't get his winter training up there as he should have done I can't I'm frozen but there was an emotional moment here a short time ago reggie williams the 14 year veteran for the cincinnati bengals the outside linebacker was saluted at halftime his final home game and he had some very memorable words i want to thank my wife and my two boys here for putting up with me and want to thank my parents and all my relatives and friends who came here to share in this which is a really sad day my last game here at Riverfront but boy boy it feels good to be one in 31 nothing [Applause] so three of you have been a part of rooting on this team there's still hope yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus go Minnesota beat those Cleveland Browns thank you I wonder if the councilman had two speeches ready depending on the scores perfect because he's extremely lucky to be a hit this this far at halftime he uses the ahead speech Valley hits Beach was certainly well received a great player for the Bengals for 14 seasons as now Houston kicks up to open the third quarter of play and the bangles busted for the moment making it out across the 20 yard line and gain a return on the play of about 21 yard by Richard Carey [Music] the halftime numbers obviously the Coors halftime statistics the Bengals dominating on the numbers board just as they did on the scoreboard very effective passing game Esiason at one stretch hit 11 straight throws and of course some highlight turnovers therefore by the others and three of those were taken in by David fuller the Bengals zero interceptions with vulture and a fumble recovery contend now we would think Cincinnati would go to the run and they do Derrick ball takes it straight ahead gets to about the 30-yard line I'd say at halftime at some of the oiler officials were furious at the play of Houston they just thought it was not a very spirited effort on a day that they could have won the division particularly incensed by Dishman after recovered the fumble bowing and turning to the audience are down 28 to nothing at the time well a lot of this stuff that they do all this extra curricular activity I mean again it worked at your head between your behind there's no time for it Dishman has to every now and then look up at the scoreboard [Music] play of just two yards it will bring up second down and eight now for Cincinnati one of the things that Jerry Glanville demands of his players if they play as far as they can he doesn't feel like they played that way in the first half [Applause] Cincinnati plecos hard feel clairewych by machine they want to be them by a hundred if they can and Cris Dishman was the guy that tried to go for that interception he made a decision to go for the interception the ball got right by him this is a tough spot for Dishman he's trying to cover McGee if he runs a little crow powder now watch district number 28 go for the interception ball gets right by him it's a big another big play by Tim McGee [Applause] and they are picking on Tim on Dishman there's a 26-yard gain for the Bengals [Applause] [Music] / to a halt at the 42-yard line one of the William fuller put the big rush on flushed him out one of the very strong aspects you don't hear a lot about Assassin's game is his ability to run he's averaging over six yards of carry and he says he likes to run so the one thing he has to work on is this slide and this is a very good slide here you see what these Oilers do is they keep chasing that quarterback because they don't know if he's handed the ball off or not hey boomer saying that there's no place to run gets there on that ground [Music] we were a syphon and going the distance at least until the late going a game if they have to win you go with your frontline people there must be some question whether or not they be wise fencing this is a long way slowly of a half to play I don't think a team that is in a must-win situation she'd really take out their first string quarterback I mean they're not in the situation where they're comfortably in a playoff run they need to just keep on going trying to keep doing positive things to try to let this game carry over in the next week's game there are the situation where they need help from a lot of Pete so for their standpoint they got to leave the first team here William they're standing behind number 34 Oregon State cincinnati has converted six of seven previous third downs this is gets a block from Tim McGee and gets down to the 37 yard line he'll be short of a first down Steve Zahn came up together number 24 for the Houston Oilers [Applause] the Oilers are able to stop a Cincinnati Drive and there once again you see Sam Weiss zooming the play into his offensive team he wants that number for play fourth down and one and white says for his Bengals leading 31 to nothing to go for it [Applause] put it up pixel up he's got a man [Music] I assume like a left-handed dark flowers right to the hands of Eddie Brown and now you see one of the older guys go down doors on his way to call another plane and just from out of nowhere I think that Sean Jews it just fell on the ground it seems to me a target to say something like this but I don't think he was hurt just his boogers hard to get his offensive team up to the line of scrimmage Sean Jones went down [Applause] the first time an opposing team has used that text and get their defense on the field yeah vegetarians one of the Joe Nash their nose tackle went down every time Cincinnati trunks you bring somebody in I'm sure that Sam watches it's constant official that John Jones just went down [Applause] [Music] looking pretty good gun now he's jogging off right now maybe he had a crimp overly concerned you know that won't be the first team as you mentioned in a divisional playoff game here the Seattle Seahawks nose tackle Joe Nash regularly went down gripping at his knees away he gets up the kids on the field by it ready to resume now it's going to be 1st down and 10 the ball position to the 23 yard line [Applause] and Stanford Jennings has a bruised kidney least in the third quarter the play take fans in takes a look and he throws it right mm who doesn't have an interception this year and I'll never have one more than Jonnie knees put the rush on and Jeff Donaldson the free safety had the ball thrown right to him but couldn't hold on and there's very little difference in terms of athletic team between a wide receiver and defensive back the big difference is defensive backs just don't have the ability to catch like wide receivers and you saw a great example of that with Donaldson that ball was right in his hands and he couldn't catch it Jon Jones ooh and AH foure gold has a slight hamstring for turn of course it does his hands money didn't fear the ball [Applause] second down and ten sighs and looking into the end zone he had a now he buys time with the scramble and Esiason picks it out of bounds inside the yard lines got him out at the 19 yard line with 1026 to play in the third quarter you mentioned Stanford Jennings coming out with a bruised kidney right now Eddie Brown is limping towards a sideline they lose Eddie Brown and Jennings that could be a little bit of a problem for the Cincinnati Bengals offense is well positioned on those heated benches we're ready to get off him not at all I gotta go from there to the deal [Applause] the way defense interfering with a scalpel we can't interfere with a snap of the ball [Applause] jerry glanville [Applause] [Music] [Applause] but the cold the combination of he has got to be terribly disappointed in his football team when you have a chance to win the championship take it you don't want it to fall in dear lab because it it usually never does [Applause] really big question you just never know what teams going to show up and when this team shows up it's tough for anyway in his league to beat him nine players drive in the third quarter for Cincinnati mangos waiting if they did at the half 31 to nothing down to the 5-yard line Craig peeler a 230 pound looky runner from West Virginia Richard Johnson and Kenny Johnson here yes the defensive backs in the game made to stop for Houston and this is just a play where the line just blocks a hit and they let the runner find the holes and that he did great very explosive runner strong run pull back tight they get a lot of power in that back here when they go with Taylor and Eric ball [Applause] who is the up back even gets the handle thirty-four to play in the third continues [Applause] good point coming up here's another look you get that big since when the offensive line just firing out hand the ball deep through the running back then you find he gives there's no stopping seam cut all the way back come and if I was a running back that's what I'd be looking to munos McNally the offensive lines have the tango telling us yesterday the Euler line backers play way off vulnerable to cutbacks that they flo over-pursue 38 to nothing Bango [Applause] it's arrived in now but not now it's the ripen but definitely not now and absolutely positively not now no way run Jimmy let me get you cab when the bass angler sportsman Society went fishing for an official truck they will vanish Chevy Astro rumor quarter the Oilers ready to take the kickoff now it comes near side to Johnson will run it back from the five the 20 and the 30 and Johnson is all the way out to the 41 yard line they're the Oilers going offense first and ten after a 36-hour kickoff return it's a doubleheader day on NBC Sports the bills in the 49ers ready to go at San Francisco or the Jets versus the Rams in an AHA and you check up in the AFC East again they're gonna look and he dips it in complete control he'll well-chosen move by because Blue Hill was positionally no positive yardage coverage that goodbye the Bengal defense this Bingle defense is really risen to the occasion they have actually shut down his high-powered Houston offense one of the toughest things to do is to try to cover these wide receivers that the Oilers have and that's something that Cincinnati's done a very good job of today [Applause] from the shotgun out Heather Jeffries hazard he's to the 49 yard line Dixon number 29 came up tonight the play for Cincinnati he put a little back on Geoffrey's here what did you have man-to-man coverage over here on a safety in jeopardy Jeffries makes the catch and Ricky diction is right there on him [Music] Jeffery's was a number one draft choice the high one out of North Carolina State has really come on and this is second year into the game with 42 catches sweeper touchdown it's better every single game Maury plays the better he becomes everybody better get that on a toilet scene quickly to get back in this game moon back at the 39-yard line cutting back he runs right into number 99 Jason buck [Applause] the ball - but no time to throw the ball [Applause] as moon tries to spin around and get away from the coverage Jason buck makes the play [Applause] as the number one rated passer in the NF s in the AFC having no success moving the team today there's the punt by Montgomery hits a low spiral downfield of Richard Perry across the 20 he's out to the 26 yard line it was a 47-yard punt by the NFL's top punter and a six yard return [Applause] we asked Mike Schmidt to help us show you why the new hats on Chevy work truck is better than Ford with more two-sided galvanized steel more standard power and a new dura grill that's tougher than Ford lawyer stove a couldn't get a Ford like this no y-you know why nobody's winning like the heartbeat of America [Music] if you feel life's leading the big Minnesota Vikings 7 to 3 have to lose today and then win against Houston and Cincinnati has to win them both to get in we win the division if all that happened Cleveland needs to win its last two games and indeed Cincinnati to beat Houston today Pittsburgh cannot win the title the Steelers are alive though is a possible wild-card the beginning of the year no one expected them to even be in the hunt they've had a couple of close losses they baby lady miss division well up today heading towards their eight wins iesson down to your kindred he is on the run the fastest thing go fighting to get away in and can't get him hmm four yards for a touchdown 44 to nothing hillarie 89 a tremendous block which we'll watch again by everybody involved let's give some credit today Cincinnati offensive learn the time that and you see Sam white taking tipping his Hall to Tim with you not only a great catch but a great run afterwards he just skip on his way into the end but the offensive one they made over the cheese to throw this ball deep [Applause] but he is specially [Applause] to the gather then watch Mackenzie McGee with the Oh out not play and he really has Dishman just he just blasted by district now here comes the play right here eatin the number 21 comes up to try to make this tackle you'll watched him McGee take a stiff arm back stiff arms into the ground and great plan 17-yard touchdown reception watch the offensive line give poober time all the time in the world great well this is the part that I like best all we see versus lead can catch but can you run with it after you make the catch nice stiff arm [Applause] and Dishman they have really [Applause] six reception 147 yards in one touched me but he gave out nothing else it you see others we know playing for the business yet crap [Applause] than this my yesterday was very confident about it from then this games in the last three weeks they had the shutout of the Browns of Cleveland three weeks ago 21 to nothing then they lost they were beaten by the Seahawks 24 17 and now they just blow away Houston 45 to nothing midway through the third quarter Leigh Johnson ready to kick it off now for cents chip shot I read Hillary picks it up on the one hop it's a bengal recovery [Applause] to my stylist [Applause] he's known since he collegian points it began he's over halfway there this is just a fine kick here the ball bounces up and nobody is there to give except for IRA hillary i'm r89 he picks it up on one hop he's the closest person to it [Applause] 45 to nothing you don't expect a short kick IRA Hillary expected on top of it another play of these Bingle's our NBC statistician Kenny Albert pointing out the Bengals most points in one game 61 back in 72 at Houston second biggest turnout of points 55 points in 1983 also at Houston you know I've done at this point we have got to thank our cameraman that are out there all man battling this cold and they don't have anything they don't have those Hart benches or anything they're just sitting out there in the cold trying to bring this game to you folks actually all the cameramen on the entire crew working the game here in the truck tez Boomer Esiason rolls out throws downfield it picked up by Rodney Holman a reception inside the 20-yard line the quarterback start to scramble everybody runs to the quarterback Holdren just sat down in if the area and that's where boomer planted and threw the ball you see Hoeven here he comes across went to the left part of your screen wide opening that hole there great pattern adjustment nice job by Hoover to get the ball off the executive position of NBC Sports is Terry O'Neill the producer of today's game is carry a work record today's game of the coordinating producer NBC's Ted Nathanson right now we have 648 to play in the third quarter [Applause] [Music] put up some over down to the 18 yard line is John Hollifield first year runner from West Virginia the all-important scoreboard please when holding to a 14-2 Tenley very important score here these people here listen to Reggie Williams at halftime he was rooting on the Minnesota Vikings but to no avail as you see they trade nachos down stopping play with 616 to go in the third quarter once again Cincinnati going with that quick snap employment defense what goes through coach's mind when you're on the sideline behind by 45 points there is no decision we'll get you back in his football getting beat like this in the midst of a disaster year but Glanville still has a chance he and his Oilers the win the division if they can come back next Saturday night at home and beat the Cleveland Browns which they'll be favored to do they just watch that replay he saw a guy weigh over 300 pounds decent acrobatics and gymnastics come in Finland Doug Smith just appeared clock goes over the middle of the farm and get a nice [Applause] so the Bengals set up again second down a visor [Applause] [Music] [Applause] rosing is putting kinda cut back there is knock down at the line of scrimmage it'll be third down and seven Hollifield not having a lot of playing time a little bit of a mix-up here he started to fall just as he came out of his stance lucky he didn't lucky he held on to that ball lot of times when that happens it really screws up the handoff and you get a fumble [Applause] 30 cows in the backup quarterback receiver John now for the Cincinnati Bengals he goes wide one-on-one coverage myosin takes a look those up committee makes a connection to Ravi Holman he's down for yard line [Applause] [Music] earlier about his receivers Boomer Esiason does the same thing he finds all of his receivers at some point during the game which keeps always pressuring the entire defense you don't know where the ball is going all you know that you've got to cover your man the entire time because if you don't boomer will find him and get the ball to him [Applause] his first down engulfed humiliating the oiler [Music] if all went down vengo fifty-one [Applause] you got that big offensive line in front arrghh ball makes a very nice move to make it up into the line of scrimmage it Aegis turns on the power barrels into the end zone waved in the school [Applause] we call the game with that I'm sure that's gone through a few period minds what's up the fifty-second part of it fifty-two this stuff I jumped it out that was a long time ago though it's tough for everyone particularly the technicians at the open end zone [Applause] and certainly from the bangle standpoint they've never almost never seen a better day than this offensive onslaught they've absolutely destroyed the Houston Oilers and today when the others were hoping to clinch their first outright divisional championship since 1967 the American Football League before the merger [Applause] they kick it too comes up burp halston picks it up gets to the 40-yard line wonder why when they kick guys up close I just try to find somebody to run in to see the happy Nagi's do like run around somebody Marasco pick that ball up and look for somebody [Applause] [Music] Waylon continues to lead the Vikings now in the fourth quarter at Cleveland stadium and the Colts are absolutely blown away Miami Miami at the outset of the day had a chance to assure itself of at least a wild-card given one today and then one again next week at Kansas City the Dolphins looked to be out of Indianapolis they still have a chance to get in Cody Carlson in the quarterback second year player from Baylor downfield throw and he makes the connection to Heywood Jefferies at the 47 yard line of Cincinnati we talked about the conditions we just heard from our producer Terry were coordinating directors a football dead Nathanson that the coffee down there in that room where they are as a little cold so there they're dealing with Zuma set off down to 70 degrees right did tough conditions everywhere from the shotgun knockers down and Geoffrey's steps out of bounds houston offense now starting to explode they had four or five guys offsides on that play most points in the National Football League season this season were turned in by the Cincinnati Bengals this is not their highest scoring day yet they beat Tampa Bay 56 to 23 and we gate is still first down illegal motion by postal fellows on that this is a tough spot to play in you get behind this bar and you still got to go out there and play hard knowing that six points just puts a dent in war you not even it did let's on Towson I've Canada King incomplete [Applause] this tonight is not only the most lopsided game perhaps of the year and perhaps the coldest date it is also as the inter marks of being the longest we have 336 to go in the third quarter I was told that the first quarter took an hour to play and here's Eric willin to give boomer Aereo film from Oregon State the Oregon State Beavers [Music] [Applause] over the middle he's got a man open and it's broken up at the front Leonard Harris running hard down the middle of the field was open but then Eric Thomas recovered and broke up the play once again you see you know that look like pass interference to me he was hit before the ball got there let's take another look at that Eric Thomas seems to be hitting here in the back before the ball gets to him [Applause] brings up a third down and 15 play [Applause] Haywood Jeffries was down at the 39 yard [Applause] Wiki dixon runs him down on the plane but it's still short of a first down Ricki Dixon here trailing this is man-to-man coverage Ricki dition has Jeffries all the way across the field what you want to do is try to run away from our defensive back here but Dixon shirin very good speed and very good camping the goal fourth down and three from the shotgun Towson takes a look over the middle it's infants place up angles [Music] put the Russia [Applause] they're not even close and there's very little fight left in the Oilers now not much talking going on either way they're teammates into the opposition [Applause] you don't want to slow down on your way to the top [Music] because you know to make a beer as refreshing as a mountain stream you gotta start with a mountain stream when a night on the town might last all night call for the taste preferred at better night spots the Silver Bullet the one that won't slow you down [Music] front buyers time's a-wastin on the last great deals of the decade at the Chevrolet dealer get cash back for special GMHC financing on today's truck Chevrolet including s10 is my man looking at his armhole that's Iike Gav [Applause] we still here mangles has sent a lot of their fans home early and happy 52 to nothing Cincinnati leads Houston in the third quarter now the Bengals with the new quarterback Eric Wilhelm working the offense Boomer Esiason was absolutely sensational Waveland in the fourth quarter holding to a 14-10 lead over Minnesota Indianapolis just laying a waste to the Miami Dolphins Dolphins led 10 nothing and have been outscored 42 to $0.03 the Dolphins are still alive in the playoff hunt san diego's rather than a billy joe oliver touchdown pass and has gone in front of Kansas City Eric for running straight ahead and gets to the 45 yard line I think samwich maybe calling off the dogs although you don't know he looks to be running the ball but very similarly to play fake in the 50-yard pass well the situation is is you know they have one set office when you send in your second string players they want to do well also so it's not like they send in people and hope they're not going to play hard william fuller is down on the play guarding defensive end doug smith the study nose tackle went out with a knee sprain earlier he returned to play though in the second half but but that's the problem now that's the problem that you have down when you put in second string guys they don't go in to sit down on the ball you know they come in there and they want to get into this scoring situation also [Music] next Saturday join NBC sports world for a holiday celebration the classic holiday ballet on skates as nutrasweet presents Dorothy Hamill in the Nutcracker on ice must join Marv Albert as he looks back on the past decades wild and wacky sports stories on the Elbert Achievement Awards that's coming up next okay but he's going off under his own power big defensive end from north carolina number 71 Richard Byrd not bad about a cold at least we would think nap no not bothered by the cold but really bothered by them 45 points are up there on it 52 points they're up there on that scoreboard keep checking that board they scorn too quick off the NBA they just corner here they're 10 possessions today that's that's the Bingle offense that that is so feared throughout the league and they've they've shown up a few times this year [Music] they just come at you so many different ways is that Tigger it must be you got that real Tiger down the other end zone Wilhelm on a roll outcast makes the completion to John Hollifield and he's after the 49 yard line on third down he's short of the first down but not by much angles have Bradley go for it Al Smith was on the tackle number 54 [Applause] Sam Weiss there studying his list of plays goes with the hat too we'll see momentarily [Applause] laughs pass plays [Applause] yep they go to the Hat they're rolling out on forth in short 50 seconds left to play Wilhelm the quarterback who will roll out there was the rollout penalty markers are down he takes it himself he's ahead for a first down if it goes Jim Rick's left way ahead of the snap count [Music] offense Lee Johnson the putter finally come he's kicked off a lot of times it hasn't punted yet first part of the game coming up hey you seen him ready sever the tight end right there at the middle of your screen go way too soon now saying I couldn't hear you babe [Music] this is one of the few times I ever envy kickers and punters colleages it on a coal as it is out here they got to put their foot on that ball I know that must hurt Johnson punting devout Johnson leaks Johnson puts it up with Ken Johnson he lets it roll at the 10-yard line across the 15 and out to the 41 and the Oilers doodle as they've been on offense will try once again after a 45-yard punt of the 10 yard return this telecast is presented by authority the National Football League it is intended for the private use of our audience any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast without the express written consent of the Cincinnati Bengals in the National Football League is prohibited this game is the property of the National Football League of the Cincinnati Bengals and the Houston Oilers all rights are reserved Houston may give up those rights to this film the way they've been playing Jerry doesn't want this to go in his time capsule [Applause] Aries kids not looking like champions today still have an excellent shot of winning the a [Music] one ball by Williams riki lost it on the way down it goes incomplete Jason buck another big pass rush from number 99 geordie cross from here just airing this ball up trying to get a big play right off the bat he grows it right - Ricky Dixon but he was under a lot of pressure Jason buck has had a fine football game today earlier sack and Warren booing right now a lot of personal dcarlson 18 seconds to go in the third quarter ii am in ten cans up now for Houston soon setting in the shotgun [Applause] when it gets to Heywood Jefferies in the Oilers have a first down [Applause] 23-yard gain on the play - gibbons comes across the middle and get three steps in number 81 and that's his first kitchen today you can shut out a guy like that you know your defense is playing extremely well 50 to nothing since my dream car would be a Nissan heart racing haha [Applause] Oh make that the mountainous with nobody around set my girl and a pizza in my Holtz of a Fighting Irish of number four Notre Dame in a game that will determine the national championship New Year's Day the best bowls are on NBC [Music] the bills and the 49ers are next time most of these NBC stations on a doubleheader day on NBC Sports some of you will see the Jets go against the Rams at Anaheim Don cookie with an opera shot here in Cincinnati and a bitter cold day where the Bengals have been rolling their d still has pitched a shutout through three quarters and here's a big blitz on Harrelson he makes the connection to Heywood Jefferies who's knocked out of the 42 yard line might be a late hit on the quarterback of penalty maka went down after the hit was made another 20 22 his face Eric Thomas and a cornerback blitz watching hit the quarterback boom I don't see how I mean where else was he supposed to hit him he didn't hit him in the knees he hit him just as it hit him just as he let the ball go [Music] the personal foul assessment the official rule doe was a hit to the head I think once again we'll see it again here you see Carlson backing up now here comes Thomas he lets the ball go he's here I don't he couldn't have pulled off [Applause] and it was pity by [Applause] [Music] was it the first down for Houston as running highs with the ball is Tracy Eaton the 230 pound fullback he takes it down to the 20-yard line this the deepest penetration by the Oilers accepting that first half turnover when they get it almost to the goal line there were a couple yards out Rozier fumble at the goal line it was recovered for us safe for a touchback and Cincinnati took over the ball seems to be a mismatch there on the toll [Music] thousand man who catches a touchdown ball whatever seven receptions he has five CD receptions in 34 catches this year Curtis Duncan they should have throw him the ball about 50 times today that had been in this game [Applause] Leland continues to Cleveland has gone in front of the Vikings now [Applause] David Vikings early in the third quarter they took that lead go ahead that's the game that the Bengals need they need the Vikings to beat the Browns today now I've always said that it's colder on the losing side you take a look over at this Houston oiler hot bench they're all gathered around it over there as opposed to the Cincinnati side well they have 45 points look at they're all standing up around the sidelines always told on the losing side about all 14 15 degrees leave [Applause] the Oilers on a day they humiliated I'm looking to avert oh shut up [Applause] but not in its a nanny Johnson got the call but didn't get in Cincinnati taking it very personal they would like to get a shutout here the shuttle that's that's awful rare you can shutout the team has a chance to win the championship in the second to the last game of the season shutting him out anytime there's a great heat in the National Football League of course a couple weeks ago this Cincinnati team shut out the Cleveland Browns [Music] they've got the clock stopped and that's good they want this to go as long as it can possibly go 13:24 to play 52 to nothing they can just live out the nightmare it all goes away there's no carryover for next week [Applause] now we've got things straightened out they're spotting the ball second down and goal from the two yard line for the oiler it is a precarious position for this Houston Oilers football team anytime people start saying all you got to do is win one of the last two you need to win that first one actually first down at the one-yard line where it's positioned first in goals are the Oilers in point-blank range but they were before Ewing that ruined Rozier fumble I think we've seen him since have we now they have had a lot of things blow up on him today level twice in his first week Aires Pittsburgh and was yanked from the game didn't play again came back then would be very well against Tampa Bay 83 odds and 13th Gary's fumble again today and he was out he spent a lot of time in that haunted then he had bench now the Bengals are calling a timeout and we'll be right back after these messages from your local station [Music] Cosby's keshia knight Blue Cross and Blue Shield the strength to lead the game of football seems simple on the field but off the field the business of football isn't because players depend on trainers trainers depend on assistant coaches assistant coaches depend on the head coach the head coach depends on the front office all of them depend on communications and that's why the NFL and its teams depend on GTE now isn't that the kind of support your business should depend on GTE the telecommunications consultant to the NFL Bing Crosby in the bells of st. Mary's Sunday night the interesting to see if micros use in the starting line of the mad next Saturday night when the Oilers go against the Cleveland Browns they will have to have their best next week I they can put so much pressure on themselves by the way they played here today it's tough I mean they got a tremendous rebound to come off of a lacking like they're taking here today to come back and try to beat Cleveland next week we've been showing that they want a bit of it to buy leading the Vikings right now [Applause] so Highsmith did not get in Leland white can go from the one he was stopped by Leon white never [Music] right there to make that play every once in a while you get an opportunity but you got to make the play watch number 51 come up and make this stop excellent play by Leon White [Music] [Applause] [Applause] the quarterback again pitch back Lorenzo white and the Oilers around the board with 1224 to play in the game p226 game sure kitchen humiliation his bank okay there's very little difference in 52 to nothing in 52 to 6 just a an option here for Louisa white to go inside or outside he chooses to turn this play up gets in the end zone now has made every extra point this season and does again 38 for 38 and with 1224 left to play in the game the Cincinnati Bengals now lead 52 to 7 the Oilers will kick off and we come back hey I got some more Party Time tips intelligence the way up there and on top of that either that he's frozen in that seat we better check on that right running back the kickoff and taking it ahead as Craig Taylor and he is out to about the 30-yard line where it's first down in ten for Cincinnati and quarterback Eric Wilhelm well 15 to play in the game as we look at the scoreboard Cleveland continues to leave Minnesota 14 to nothing if the brown should win that game and then go in and beat Houston next week the Browns I believe would be in position to win the division this thing is so wild Cleveland basic breakdown they can clinch the division title by beating Minnesota and Houston plus a Houston lost to Cincinnati we get happened yeah can also get a wild-card by winning the final two games but plus one loss by Buffalo Miami or Los Angeles throw in a catch is made John Garrett with a spectacular reception his first in the National Football League rookie receiver from Princeton with a 20-yard reception and a great catch by John Garrett runs a nice route fakes like he's going to the post and then turns it out to the corner stretches out and that's a great catch right there nice catch by John Garrett that's his first catch this Vigi won't be his last these are old spotter we missing up missing up for New Year's bobbing today you might be mr. touchdown I think he'd rather be there brother jet was the Ivy League play [Music] I told you it wouldn't be his first catch his last pitch here's his second right there yeah with his second catch his other brother Jason Garrett is a developmental quarterback of the New Orleans Saints he was the Ivy League Player of the Year last year not to mention his father Jim Garrett who's a former coach with the Browns and the Saints and is now scout for the Cowboys his father would applaud this play a very nice wear out very nice catch but runs in the family he's having these sisters yeah it's got there's about I think there's about nine kids very athletic family it has come out of Princeton this year he broke every rushing receiving and scoring record there here is Eric ball turning up field wall is down to the 30-yard line it's down I mentioned to you these players they don't want to they don't want to go in the game and just sit on the ball they want to make a big play too [Applause] Eric Wilhelm right here taking a note out of boomers page see he carries through on the fake acting like he's gonna throw the ball very good habits from that quarterback learn them from the Masters Boomer Esiason [Applause] a lot of times ten minutes and 45 seconds to go [Applause] Irie Hillary goes in motion first down and 10 angles go to the run and they take it to the 30-yard line Cincinnati continues to lead this game 52 to 7 after building up a 52 to nothing lead that's something that Sam Weiss we talked abou mer about this hand faking and everything and Sam during the course of classic stands around in different spots on the field and watches his quarterback faith and if he can detect the ball he'll walk over and say I was standing right where the quarterback stands and I could see the ball so you got to working a little bit better and it is a great play by the quarterback that has the ability and the patience boy gives you a lot of throw the ball a little bit of pressure on those defensive linebackers Eric will hand Morgan State out of Portland Oregon [Applause] looked like a reverse they faked it and then Hollifield ranted around in their second down and nine play and got ahead for a gain of about six yards Billy Bell made the knock down number 33 also on the play was 21 Tracy Eaton I mentioned an era grew hem went to Oregon State there's another school just right down the road from Oregon State the University of wort victorious last night in one Bowl I don't know the name of the school that said behind to do a big bowl independence yeah they played well those came back here's the throw [Applause] [Music] first down Bengals as the game clocks down to 928 in running you know is there spatter last week each other's catching ball today this week a developmental quarterback from Syracuse God Phil Cox is one of our spatters along with the kid maybe Todd will be throwing their asses out there next week this might be the stepping stone to greatness be one of our spotters is so left hand having a bad all-star game [Applause] [Music] with Hillary emotion jeredy slide left he is kept down at the 12 yard line by Eugene seal number 53 ninety-five William Fuller's [Applause] this game was over in the first quarter it was 21 to nothing of the occlusion first 15 minutes of play jerry glanville others found themselves down 31 to nothing at halftime a great year until today [Applause] full of the opening staff by moon really set the tone of this game [Applause] down to the nine yard line got a step away from going all the way down third down and nine coming up with the bottles position once it cut back by halle till he gets back over in the hole there's some move in here but he starts to slip tackle by Dishman Guillory to the left John Garrett wide to the right could be going that way as the quarterback is Eric Wilhelm they fake and he takes a look [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Hillary touchdown Cincinnati 58 to 7 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the exam you get this much time to try to get open you better get opened you see Hillary he runs one Rock now he runs another little move right back to the back into the end zone [Applause] just lost about two very since down just like kitchen stay alive on two fronts certainly their own and also they need a Viking win over the brows today [Applause] Indianapolis destroyed Miami San Diego with a seven-point lead on Kansas City four o'clock scores first one up Atlanta leading Washington three nothing in the first quarter most of you will see on NBC Sports Buffalo at San Francisco game is part of our doubleheader some will see the jet play at Ram [Applause] I was in the flat taking the ball out to the 45 yard line is Leonard Harris they just flashed the Vikings leading the [Applause] I've had some great finishes in that rivalry Minnesota and Cleveland so I think they better keep your eye upon that scoreboard right to the end 1714 right now Vikings the Vikings with the Browns would still have to beat the Oilers at Houston next week and Sam watches bengals would still have to beat the Vikings at Minneapolis guys standing right mission would like to be a part of this Hickey woods [Applause] notice Duncan makes the downfield reception at the 39 yard line of the Bengals good for a first down oilers still in the driver's seat despite today's lopsided score in the AFC Central they win at home next week they win the division if they had one today they were nice play on the ball by Harris and it's little incomplete at the 30 stopping the clock with 558 to go [Applause] Brody come here find this ball the winner Harris he has his hands on them but just not able to get control of it before he hits the ground he has three four chances to catch [Applause] very good ability ranging strong [Applause] interception and he has the ball culture with his his third interception and he's got a fumble recovery three interceptions in a fumble coveri he also had three interceptions versus Kansas City on October [Applause] largest safety came to play he doesn't miss anything I'm sure he doesn't miss ball carriers interceptions he this this man here is having a great year just a great year we were talking on the day was mission about running light he said you know why Ryan luggage so much publicity he always gives you the big hit he said I like to hit people too but I wrap up when I tap those're Eric Wilhelm at quarterback he's going to be sacked by Sean Jones back of the 33 yard line skipper Clinton on the sidelines just poured a big bucket of water our Gator on Reggie Williams now he's apologized like beaches dunking with a huge bucket of water they give them a new garment he's been second Oh read it straight done the job in Tanana no respect for the elders [Music] [Applause] [Music] turning the corner is Hollifield and he'll be out of bounds and about the ball close to the 40-yard line usually when you run a ball on the opposing side line you have to run through opposing players that are standing along a sideline but there's a traffic jam on that bench over there that useless side folks making judicious use of the clock Ahmad hill at 555 18 left to play good enough put three four more scores 58 to seven I think this one's doing the barn down [Music] well I say ain't over looks over well this one was over in the first quarter this is the point where people can just keep saying why are they trying to run up the score they're not trying to run to score it's that these players want to play I mean they get paid to Hillary after the 45 yard line they pick her down play and he's just short of the first down [Applause] mangles taken as much time off the regular clock as they cans down to 444 and running they led 21 to nothing at the end of the first quarter they led 31 to nothing at the end of the first half fifty-two to nothing at the end of 3/4 58 to seven running hard and fighting ahead for yardage but maybe not there is Craig Taylor number 20 you'll see where the spot is [Applause] referee Jim Tony spouting the ball or they haven't spotted right there that's a first down [Applause] bring the sticks out officials want to get out of here also am I they're doing their duty oh no they've done it I tell you that kept luring otter here there was a lot of fears this thing would erupt into a street fight they've done a great job of controlling this football game not letting it get out of hand in terms of all the ship eNOS that some app goes on first down Bengals with 416 to play there's the run yeah you can see the forward progress Kraig Kahler fighting and getting free and getting ahead for the first down Jim Anderson running back coach off to the left of your screen [Music] [Applause] he has 32 first down [Applause] lock his staff with 40 the 42 yard line with 351 to play Hollifield managed to stay get out of bounds and stop the clock his team in the late 58 to 7 Greg Taylor the lead blocker on this play takes on number 22 Johnson confucian watch the lead block number 20 right here coming right at you this is called oh whoa we see the end of it you see 22 boots rolling on his back because Daly just put him right on him an addition Kenny Elbert pointing out they've tied the team record with 34 first down I'll appeal he's all over the field running on first down he is cut down for no gain maybe a loss of the yard [Music] [Applause] a Liefeld trying to show that he deserves some playing time even when the score is in 58 7 they call him his their secret weapon they got two good runners first-year runners from West Virginia John Hollifield and Craig Taylor another freaking first-year runner from UCLA Eric ball-ball our open air Vicki woods back at full speed next season rehabbing in a surgery after surgery on his knee following the Steeler game early in the season [Applause] well when you don't get to play a lot you want to take your time when you're out there and that's what Wilhelm was doing he calls the timeout a little bit more time out there huh we got a little camera time going here it's the bills in the forty-niners is the second half of our NBC sports doubleheader today some of you will see the Jets go against the Rams those second games well underway a lot of these people here at this Stadium trying to rush home so they can see that second half of the doubleheader [Music] Minnesota steel 1714 over Cleveland that's the big score here they as repeated Chicago 4228 those path is it backs when if Tony Manders played days weights down 40 pounds of conceit reported and that much was planning Billings though self-proclaimed the greatest tackle to hit the frozen sometimes Rams leave the Jets have enough Bill's in the forty niners North Shore [Applause] Derek Paul is caught on second down second down and 11 back at the 45 yard line Scot Kozak the first-year linebacker from the University of Oregon makes the tackle Reggie Williams over there his last home game I know what he's looking at maybe he's got a monitor what's happening oh my he is him [Applause] third down and 13 for quarterback Eric Wilhelm and the Bengals Wilhelm bye in time with the scramble down feel crow it's completed and it looks to be good for a first down see where they mark the ball [Applause] just short that'll bring up another 4,000 less than a yard now what will I am is working it you're on to finery series he's Greg dealing him watch him direct him with his right hand tells him to go towards his side on it puts the ball right on [Applause] like Scott Jones number 77 is in the game extra blocker Wilhelm has really thrown the ball very nicely to my heaven for 776 yards it's the same office it looks the same all is down to the 16 take it down to the two-minute warning [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] movin quick and with purpose that's the whole idea behind Pontiacs newest Grand Prix introducing the first Grand Prix ever with four doors the new Grand Prix sports today again 4.8% financing and every new Grand Prix during Pontiacs a lot of excitement closeout okay okay have it your way you can't change pollution you can't change the deficit you can't change the price of bread but you gotta start somewhere I mean take your clothes for example if you just get out of that monkey suit you might get a positive attitude going I mean the world could be your oyster oyster well it's an acquired taste so did you break some Raj Frank you owe that horse and I are one we achieved this special panel once man and beast in the same light what's that mean means they'll be talking again tomorrow [Music] now it's time for the most valuable player award sponsored by Budweiser today's MVP is quarterback Boomer Esiason of the Cincinnati Bengals bud wise will make a contribution of the United Way on behalf of all the MVP selected in today's games Sasson with a big big day the whole bengal offense and defense had one right from the outset reporting now from Cleveland Stadium net bar just hit a 32-yard field goal for the Cleveland Browns and that tied the game with Minnesota 1717 with 24 seconds to play so they could be going to overtime handoff up the middle Hollifield on first down for the bengals takes the ball down to the 12 yard line look at the numbers for Boomer Esiason 20 of 27 326 yards four touchdowns and no interceptions [Applause] and now they have done their part they just have to hope [Music] that Minnesota can beat Cleveland 17:17 24 seconds left to go our numerous similar scenario years ago [Music] so he's trying to get it in the end zone again hits back to jalapeño down is about the 13 yard line [Music] game clock as you see ticking down to the final minute of play Sam White's gone for him to skip it up either that or he's thinking Yahoo today's margin 51 points it could go higher 44 seconds to play [Applause] [Music] third down six from the 13 yard line [Applause] [Music] team complete at the six that stop the clock with 25 seconds to play [Music] girl unit go team but pick a field goal 1858 to seven with 25 seconds to play and then not letting John's okay let him breach catch that kick this one [Applause] it'll tie the for the most points in the teams history 61 which was originally set against the Oilers at Houston some years ago now we go back to set pick a field goal Jerry Glanville in the oil now the way you vacuum your rug can be the way in vacuum your bug but only with a powerful you car back our brush from Black & Decker it's the first vacuum that's at home in your car maybe you can't avoid winter but you can sail right through it in the Caribbean Florida or Hawaii let American Airlines take you where [Music] jerry glanville and sam white the adversary whites the coach of the bengals with his team-leading 58 to 7 so Glanville is the bangle set up for a field goal trying to get even more before the final gun lanville calls a timeout you don't think that this could be a fake field go to you I mean that would be the ultimate I wouldn't put it past him he might have the two generals made it midfield and slug it out spare the troops arrested [Applause] mangles setting up for the field goal try which if good would make it a sixty one to seven gauge in breach ready to kick it lead Jensen holds Hicks on the way and the kick is good 21 seconds to play the Bengals extend their lead 61 to 7 [Applause] right according to Sam watches plan he said we want to come in here not only be him we want to put that her on they've done even more than their leading 61 to 7 with 21 seconds to play this is a good time for an onside kick they've been doing that all day kicking the ball 1ci they have they work once our Hillary came down and field and one on one bass anyone writing and scored after that [Music] [Applause] evil in Minnesota in overtime that big game the executive producer of NBC Sports is Terry O'Neill the producer of today's game Terry Ewert the director of today's game of the coordinating producer of NFL football and NBC Ted Nathanson back to them and dispatchers Doug Kidd and Todd Phil tux and NBC statistician Kenny Albert warren moon is on the bench with john Grimsley ward off the cold the bangles are ready to kick it off again with 21 seconds to play [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Warren Moon 9 4:20 stop playing intersections [Applause] the Oilers not playing like a team with a chance to win the championship it's got to be disconcerting for head coach Jerry Glanville one of those things and you can't say anything to these players after this game the along ride there they do try the onside kick but they feel the curry nicely Eric fares a linebacker as an effective block makes the play and so the onside kick attempt does not work for Cincinnati but the strategy was sound leading 61 to 7 with 21 seconds left [Music] the rivalry grows deeper sixty one to seven in an onside kick I told you I'd expected it that's that's not to go with that strategy in these points in the game [Music] we might have a timeout now before this make sure we got the right play [Music] [Applause] a little bit of motion which will shoot all the Flies the Browns and the Minnesota Vikings are in overtime as referee Jim Toni signals the illegal procedure call against Houston and the second quarter the Bills have the lead over the 49ers three enough which means nothing in San Francisco if you watch the Monday night coach Glanville has the headset off photos coach white I'm gonna make all their calls now just off what they've seen so far without help from up high Allisyn dropping to throw long ball downfield he's got a live arm it's incomplete intended for Curtis Duncan the whole time for at least two more plays though and seconds left you can run a couple plays in ten seconds right you know but it doesn't matter well we know that this whole thing from a final number standpoint really hasn't mattered since the first quarter that's when it was over 21 to nothing Cincinnati Bengals they really got it together for this one it was 21 to nothing before the game was five minutes old [Applause] I'm interested in the postgame handshake will it happen we've all the Oilers fall out with four seconds three seconds left that's going to do it as the clock runs out and the game is over Glanville is leaving without the front or hands and you would imagine he would he wants no part of this on his way out of here back to Houston to regroup the Oilers beaten badly today losing 61 to 7 but still very much alive in the playoff hunt a win next week at home against the Cleveland Browns would get them in as AFC Central champion but today for the Oilers it was awful for Sam watching the Bengals it's never been better stay tuned on most of these NBC stations for the second game of our football doubleheader most of you will see the Buffalo Bills take on the defending Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers from ahdre shot this is Don crickey play I give you this in Cincinnati [Applause]
