catch for a first down as he brings it out to the 32 a 13-yard pickup Sam Mills made the stop Jeffries who had 90 catches a year ago he has slaughtered Gibbons and Duncan joining him in that for wide if he was ready to go into the regular season he looks good early he looks good because he's running I think behind one of the great offensive lines in the National Football League it was Munchak the left guard it cleared the way so to Donnelly did his job Matthew's on the inside I mean but that offensive line does a great job of protecting moon but open up some holes there for second in the yard to go [Applause] we'll get the first down the former Michigan State standout as he takes it to the 26 yard line and white last year really blossomed he gained over 1200 yards and caught 57 passes and Pat that's one of the things that concerns the Saints his ability on screens to catch the ball they're a great screen team but you know in spite of all the rushing Gary in spite of all the receptions I think he and Marcus Allen are the best pass blocking backs in the league I mean I think warmoon really appreciates him most as a fast walk [Applause] the late handoff inside the 20s he Taylor coming up to make the stop and so you get those six D bees back there and then your run right at them yeah and that's exactly what they're doing you're gonna see there's four defensive linemen here and just one linebacker now all the these guys go here and when that happens they just run the little draw play I mean everybody's got got a helmet on every every defender and one for Sam Mills tripping him up that would have gained another eight ten yards back it in three I play of the drive coming up protection similar to the 10 and they have a person goal there been battling back from a growing problem misses the first three preseason games but had eight catches of the last preseason outing ten yard pickup on the play they the key to this thing was the Blitz pickup by Lorenzo white number 44 we were now this drive started from the 20 they are at the 6 yard line now and this is where the New Orleans Saints defense has to really make something happen this cannot be a high-scoring game for them to win this they've relied on their defense for years they've won with defense and special teams primarily and if it's going to happen they can't let him score too early in this football game his toy cook comes back in the CRO game they passed for 5 they rushed for 5 they have a 2nd and goal at the 6 this corner touchdown catch Heyward Geoffrey [Applause] six yards to Jefferies [Music] [Applause] this was the play that Warren Moon said he felt he had an advantage it's the underthrown what they - Haywood Jeffries I mean he fakes like he's going to go deep and the defensive backs think there's going to be a deep one but then he under throws it and he turns away from the defender I mean it's a subtle little move by Haywood Jeffries Jeffries was talking to us yesterday about that move felt he could do it on Jimmy Spencer and indeed he did one of the reasons as Jeffries is so tall and he can really play it well al Del Greco now for the point after attempt lapaki Richardson and it is a seven they're using it as a positive rather than a negative yeah that's what Warren Moon said is you know he didn't feel the pressure as a matter of fact he's relieved that but Adams has said hey guys do it this year or the party's over and so everybody knows exactly where they stand they understand that when they have 30 guys in the last year of a contract so this is it but they're huge playing [Music] going to generate a lot of points by themselves so what do they do the defense takes it into their own hands and causes turnovers causes fumbles and gives their offense a short field again this is not a bad play at all by Givens it's a terrific play by Ricky Jackson who's hustling still in his 13th year still hustling around all over the field and he said that he wasn't going to get him but the great players have that other sense of if I can't tackle him let's make a play somehow or other dive maybe tip it away as Ricky Jackson did right there first down at the Houston 41 that's a good point [Music] we'll conducted on the Dalton five a gain of six Gary's I watched open Hilliard this st. team has not been the same team since he was injured he blew out that knee in 1990 I guess it was and they were a great running team in 89 but since then they have run the ball poorly and they're a hard team to figure out because they're conservative but they don't run the ball well and more loves to run the football that's just not happening they only averaged 3.6 a carry last season [Music] [Applause] first gather the and here's a guy Pat they can catch the ball in traffic as well as anybody the NFL he doesn't get open by much well if you get the ball in his direction he's going to make a play now we talked about the rushers here we talked about 89 being the big year but what's happened since then and that's what makes I think the Saints a tough team to understand because you would think it's conservative as they are I mean this is the office that Rush Limbaugh would love they really haven't had that down 20 yard line [Music] [Applause] pretty good coverage at time as that was Eddie Robinson the linebacker dropping off to make the cover on the corner they have this offensive long we're treated to two very good offensive lines I think in particularly to pass protection watch the offensive line here as these guys give weight Wilson's of time port does his job Richard Cooper the left tackle the rookie William rope had a nice start to his game so those guys gave him plenty of time they're coming I believe Dalton Hilliard the intended receiver covered very well that time by Michael barrel the rookie Bubba McDowell number 25 is a strong safety but he's playing a lot more he's too Blitzer in there defensive backfield as well holding number 77 puffins ten yards second down so it was holding not a roughing the passer you know that's William growth the rookie their number one draft pick out of Louisiana Tech he's number 77 the right tackle he's got the heimlich manoeuver pulled on William fuller down it's an easy call Bubba McDowell gets close again but McDowell is again one of those key matchups today him on the Blitz who picks up Bubba McDowell on the bliss will also be a determinant in who wins and loses this football game ten-yard penalty makes it second and 20 now from the 30 yard line the first quarter as twice Wade Wilson has done that he's used his their defense they were the best in the NFL as far as points allowed you know past defense number one sacks fumble recoveries they obviously they they caused a lot of fumbles because they play zone defense they have guys like Ricky Jackson hustling around causing trouble it's either weakness is the rushing game and like I said it's an anomaly this team you would consider them a physical defensive team they want to run the ball but they haven't been able to they still aren't winning on offense until won a championship you have to be able to win on defense special teams in offense Fred McAfee the single working did not play in the preseason he was hurt what the Saints leading rusher from a year ago Vaughn Dunbar is out for the season with a knee injury and then their starting fullback Brad muster went down with a sprained knee last week so Neal the rookie and McAfee who did not play in the preseason he started in the backfield so it's tough for Jim Mora here you are trying to run the football trying to establish it and yet your two started running backs are hurt not available well we're going to end our first quarter of play here at the Louisiana Superdome 73 Houston just acted like he's been here for ten years he's acted like he he should be started the first half three of bypassing now completes his fourth of the game here at Martin who can catch the ball so well with people right next to him has a 16 yard gain and they're at the Houston end of the field at the 47 yard line we talked about Erik Barden in because he doesn't have blazing speed when he gets open he's not open for terribly long but if you just give him a chance and get the ball around him he'll make a play that was pretty good coverage by McDowell but he is so strong Eric Martin he uses his body to screen the defender and anything comes deal he'll just suck that ball up and you have no chance that's the reason he's the all-time leading receiver for the single let him for six straight years in receiving goes in motion Wilson looks at the PL they met ball deflected very dangerous past that time Wilson had somebody open in the flat and then Cris Dishman almost came up with the Northern Colorado couldn't come up with that one it'll bring up third down the Saints had a very good draft they had to number one picks due to the fact they traded Pat's willing to the Detroit Lions you mentioned rope also Irv Smith out of Notre Dame it's amazing that seven rookies draft picks make a team that went 12 and for a year ago I mean that's it's kind of amazing but it is a good draft they roped the best offensive lineman in the draft herb Smith the best tight end available on the ground third down Tim the Saints have not converted a third down they're all for three inside the
