the man in black he ruled the oilers but pittsburgh came in and played the spoilers [Music] so on a horse he took a ride and to atlanta he took his pride a land of gold that glitters now on that sideline he plies his trade the man in black he likes hitters nbc sports presents the national football league today it's the houston oilers versus the atlanta falcons hello everybody this is charlie jones along with todd christensen we're at atlanta fulton county stadium it is a sellout 94 degrees and the humidity is almost 50 percent it's a warm one this afternoon the falcons won the toss they'll be receiving and it is deion sanders who will be returning the opening kickoff tony zindejas will start it all for the houston oilers the blue of houston against the black of atlanta here is gene lang on the left wing and he returns it to the 17-yard line atlanta's offense their offensive line much improved even better when tackle chris hinton returns from a calf injury max and receivers this can be the year the quarterback chris miller could go all the way to the pro bowl now when atlanta goes to the red gun set the running back in the tight end will come out and john collins and floyd dixon come in as additional wide receivers that's the red gun first down atlanta at their own 17. your side's in motion [Applause] and miller comes out has pressure and he is dropped at the seven yard line by william fuller a loss of 10 it will be second down and 20. the houston defense their defensive front is something to prove they want to become a unit that their offense can be proud of now when they go to their spider defense a tackle and two linebackers will come out ezra johnson comes in along with defensive backs steve brown and patrick allen and they join a secondary that will be tested today by atlanta's wide open offense they have to perform like they did here if houston is to win charlie william full of sack did anything but they only went with the two back set for one play now right now they're back to the red gun from the end zone here's the screen and he is back out to about the 17 yard line which is the original line of scrimmage it will be third down in two that's a safe play wanted to get back some of the artists give them a chance to have a reasonable chance of getting a first down a lot of times you panic early in the game and you want to go deep but that was a good safe pass brassard made the play up the field good support on the run by the secondary of houston richard johnson with the tackle there is jerry glanville the man in black [Applause] and jack pardee and the white cap for the houston orleans third down and down [Music] [Applause] miller's pass is complete it's sean [Applause] [Music] it's an opportunity though that sean collins had to get the first down here we get a chance to see meads out in the flat looking to the middle of the field and he anticipates the throw trying to double cover on ryzen that's going to be attacked that they're going to use all day because they want to take rising out of the offense as much as they can scott fullhead jafont and thecube geraldo and mcneil returns it to about the 37-yard line houston's offense the run and shoot it features a massive offensive line with three first-round draft choices that are just coming into their own max and receivers they are seasoned and effective with speed quickness and experience and houston will go with this set regardless of down or field position the run and shoot and it's fun to watch it is fun to watch and people wonder whether or not warren moon is going to be able to establish himself right off the bat he had a poor pre-season his arm wasn't feeling so well but he told us yesterday he feels great and now is the time to assert himself the gains count here's the first down for their own 36-yard line drew hill was the motion man pass is complete to hell and he is out of bounds he picks up nine on the play roland mitchell chases him out atlanta's defense they call it the black way because of houston's offense this will be atlanta's basic defense their defense in front will have to take charge they're still looking for the key pass rusher they're secondary it will feature six defensive backs atlanta's excellent corners but they will be challenged today and one at the 45. [Applause] the brawl inside to lorenzo white he's got the first down defense and that's the black way one of the people that's going to have to be effective today for the defense of the atlanta falcons is marcus cotton here we got a chance to see him in a stand-up situation outside he rushes unfortunately for him ernest gibbons actually gets in his way it wasn't meant to be a block or else otherwise it would have been a tackle for a loss coming up to swarm on defense but he gets the first down nonetheless [Music] yesterday in the conversation we had with jerry glanville he told us that their best pass rusher as of this moment is marcus cotton but yet he had really asserted himself in the preseason they're definitely going to have to have some sacks today to stop the houston offense and here's the run and shoot from the shotgun houston will show it both ways flag is down goes deep into double coverage ernest gibbons the intended receiver scott case broke it up now we'll go back to the blood offensive pass interference excuse me that's the illegal use of the hands there's good defense here a double team situation on earnest givens by bobby butler and scott case we see him look to the left and try to get the free safety out of the middle but case does a good job of staying with his man right here you see him running stride for stride with gibbons and bobby butler gets over there and bats the ball away good play by the secondary of the falcons warren moon checking it out showing his vertical what's going on he knows it's going to be a lot more where that came from and so does the secondary that's right so with the ball back to the 39 it is first and 20. drew hill again the motion man and moon steps away delay of game it will be first in 25. the offenses have to pay attention because they're very conscientious out on the field of getting the clock started right away warren moon houston got a little bit lazy coming up to the line of scrimmage houston started at their own 36. they picked up a first down to the 49 and now they're back to their 34 first and 25. falcons were six in the secondary pressure from the backside passes incomplete haywood jeffries the intended receiver and marcus cotton put a real hit on warren moon there [Applause] warren moon tried to hang in there as best he could but marcus cotton came from the blind side here you see that for some reason steinkiller lets him go because he's occupied if one moon doesn't get that off cotton good hit there evidently marcus must have heard the conversation we have with glanville he's trying to assert himself now charlie and it's second and 25. bill's in motion a little dump screen to white and white is across the 50-yard line football falcons say they have it and they do well this play is set up very well a good call for second and 25 lorenzo makes a good cut here and right there scott case overruns it lorenzo white trying to do too much right here great play there 58 stripping the ball and jordan alertly jumps on it big turnaround of momentum for the atlanta foul exactly what they needed at this point and atlanta with the ball just on the houston side of the 50-yard line no score in the ball game 11-17 time remaining in the first quarter interesting now that atlanta goes back to the two-back offense and it is broussard he's got five has about eight and then he's dumped right in front of the atlanta bench terry canard for the defense you know many people talk about the fact that broussard at five six and a half is just too small to play this game but this low center of gravity is a big advantage for a running back he cuts on the inside of the block of his fullback jones and right here uses some feet to get some extra yardage at five six and a half and over 200 pounds brassard is an awful awful load to tackle that center of gravity tough to handle but what an exciting day for this youngster yes it is isn't it he's the rookie the number one draft choice you talked to him yesterday he said i've got a lot of pressure i've got to learn to relax you got to realize that they didn't have this many people up from pullman charlie [Applause] second and two [Applause] first pass is complete michael hayes there's nothing like coming up second and two you have so many options right there chris miller picks apart the second area for a short game now they're on their heels a little bit after the run if atlanta can establish a running game with broussard they're going to be tough all afternoon it's a first down at the houston 35. now 9 54 and counting no score in the first quarter one turnover fumble by the oilers recovered by atlanta five in the secondary for [Applause] houston from the red gun incomplete floyd dixon the intended receiver and patrick allen had the coverage it'll be second down check of the 10-minute ticker chicago shuts out seattle green bay fourth quarter leading the round the final kansas city 24 minnesota 21. final tampa bay over detroit and a wild one and washington shutting out phoenix and the game starting along with ours we have no score [Applause] dallas leading san diego seven i think that's the only score in the early games and no score here miller far side has the pass complete haynes is dropped johnny means with the tackle one of the advantages of great speed that michael haynes has is of course the secondary has to play off of them a little bit if they continue to hit the short passes they'll be able to stretch the defense a little bit later in the game it's a mind game i think that glanville is playing with the houston secondary doing some different things changing it up preparing to be conservative early in the game the ball at the houston 29 third down and four hanes goes wide to the far side and sean collins is wide to the near side pressure for the backside passes complete all alone [Applause] but somebody blew a coverage well inevitably when you're going to blitz in the situation you see bubba mcdowell coming on the right side of your screen flying in chris miller sees the field and somebody just left dixon wide open there in the secondary if he doesn't have to go down for that that's definitely a touchdown accusing has to regroup and wonder what the deal was back there and johnny meads who yesterday said they're making me play more like a defensive back than a linebacker makes the tackle that's a great effort by meads if he doesn't get him that's a score seven yard line first down goal to go miller 506 for 62 yards so far doug smith with a tackle [Applause] broussard told us he's five six and three quarters and weighs 201 pounds well you know spud webb and those guys made it okay to be short randy newman was wrong short people do got a reason for living they do they've got a good one this afternoon particularly in this offense that we see both from atlanta and houston well they also listed the salaries yesterday in the paper charlie i'd say that broussard has a lot to be happy about short or not it was a gain of a yard to the six second and goal and he's got it [Applause] one of the issues that people are going to debate about constantly is whether or not the run and shoot can put it in the end zone once they're inside the 10 or 5 yard line here you see what happens is they spread out the four wide receivers there's nobody inside once they go with a quick trap to brassard there's nobody up the middle no middlebacker he scores easily and greg davis to attempt a point after and it is good atlanta leads seven to others [Applause] line first down backside pressure are they going to ruin it incomplete enough fumble andre bruce came from the back side and really clobbered him i was waiting on the referee to signal it is a fumble yes it's a touchdown oh yes you know one of the things that they've been talking about is andre bruce has had some real difficulty in the pre-season paternity suits missing practice right there that was a huge play and everybody just stopped like they didn't know what was going on i was watching the referee he did not make a motion so it's a live ball that's right nobody blew the whistle houston is going to scream all they want debate about it but the fact is that nobody said anything about it if there's no whistle blown here we get a chance to see andre bruce comes untouched and just clobbers warren moon they're going to debate as to whether or not that was an incomplete pass but in reality it wasn't stumbling trying to pick up the ball everybody stands and waits for a minute what's the deal i believe it's bobby butler that comes up and picks up the ball and scores even the crowd is stunned you think there'd be a little bit more emotion than this for a second touchdown but everybody's still waiting to see what the situation is bob mcelwee says no it's a touchdown six points now he's calling time out on the field and we'll go back and look at the whole play as the officials start a conference [Applause] they may want a review does this come under the purview of the replay official i think it could here we got a situation where there isn't any debate as to whether his arm did not come forward it's a fumble bruce just clobbers him and it's a fumble and i don't know what the debate is right here because the offensive lineman made the mistake of assuming that it was a forward pass here you get a chance to see tuggle almost pick up the ball and then butler pick it up push it in the end zone nobody's sure everybody's looking around butler picks it up for an incidental touchdown here we get an angle from the front no way his arm was going forward it's a definite fumble why everybody stopped is unexplainable no official signals incomplete bobby butler did a heads up job picking up the ball and going into the end zone because you never know what's going to happen right here he pushes it forward kind of like casper did remember that in a san diego game in the holy roller that's right and the extra point by greg davis is good and the surprising atlanta falcons lead the houston orders by a score of 14 to nothing [Applause] listen to my nephew he's gonna be a lawyer like me he's even gonna look like me oh really so does that mean on his first big trial day the jury's gonna notice his winning smile yeah and his great soup yeah oh his somebody and that's what bruce just did he did not have a good pre-season but as we all know pre-season does not count that's right this does atlanta leaves it 14-0 bernard ford is the return man greg davis with two extra points to kick off houston will have the ball again at their 20-yard line and the first fight has started it's out at the 10. believe me there were betting pools in atlanta and in houston as to when this moment would occur and if you had 6 38 time remaining first quarter at the 10-yard line you win that's charlie doing his bob arrow imitation yeah i'm really surprised it took over eight minutes to get to a fight [Applause] welcome back to that ticker in just a moment houston now from their own 20. atlanta in control of the ball game houston to rely on the run and shoot office to get them back into the game here's pressure again from the back side and the pass is incomplete givens the intended receiver but bruce again with pressure chicago wins green bay wins kansas city wins tampa bay washington those are all finals no score in those two indianapolis buffalo now tied at three new england leading miami and san diego is tied up now at 7-7 and here it is atlanta 14 and houston nothing second and 10 at the 20-yard line from the shotgun incomplete and andre bruce number 93 has literally taken control of the ball game charlie jerry has great confidence in his cornerbacks bobby butler charles demery and deion sanders and that's why you get a chance to see so many people coming unencumbered here we see bruce on the outside and they're occupying the tackle there's nobody that's coming out to get bruce as a result he's wreaking havoc in the backfield warren moon doesn't like that at all he's having to take a little bit longer than he wants to to set up where is he going to get help what has to happen in this situation is the guard has to pull out and take a look at cruz but because he's covered he can't do that as a result bruce is coming unencumbered here he is again they throw back a quick out to that side the corner moves up and makes a plus and atlanta comes out with a football the falcons are in the end zone with the ball that's great run support by roland mitchell a tremendous effort by tim green after he rushes the passer come back out and make the tackle warren decides we're gonna go with a quick throw here i'm tired of getting sacked right here you see royal mitchell come up not quite get blocked and there's tim green the ball comes loose but it's too late bruce coming from the outside now great confidence look at him stand up and come with a two-point stance he's bothering warren moon they're gonna have to make some adjustments on the sideline with their offensive protection montgomery's kick deion sanders drifts back and takes it at the 18-yard line fumbo houston has the ball houston has recovered a fumble eric ferris i think is the one that got it you're right it is it's eric bears [Applause] well if you believe in momentum you'd have to say that the starch has been taken out of them a little bit even though dion shakes hands there trying to be a sportsman he's got a lot of room because of the howitzer the montgomery hit now he cuts up field gets a good block here right around the 25 and right here tries to take too many moves the helmet gets right on the ball great play there by al smith that's what caused the recovery for fairs big break for the houston oilers it is a first down at the 33-yard line still pressure knocked away andre bruce again he takes the ball and warren moon i would have to guess that by now the offensive line coach knows the number of andre bruce that's about the fourth time now he's come in and nobody blocking him right here you get a little bit of the macho posing as he kneels over warren moon and bruce matthews comes over to say i don't appreciate that and neither does warren moon but in the meantime this is turning into the andre bruce show warren moon 307 35 yards and that's a big reason for it right there 93 is asserting himself warren moon takes a timeout the score atlanta 14 houston nothing and andre bruce in control of the game hit the beach helmet for the star of the special teams yeah it was interesting that eric ferguson along with the rest of the special teams members lined up before the game went one length of the field and then another length of the field escorted by the marines he's the one that got to wear this helmet and it's interesting the whole military motif really exists out here because one of the groups out here is jerry's jar head that's right and they also put war paint on eric so he is ready i tell you the way that it's going right now andre bruce may win his own helmet before halftime i would think so they got to put somebody on him here's the option by warren moon he will lose a couple of yards atlanta comes up with the ball the officials are running with them it may be another touchdown it's the second time that's going to happen a great play there by jessie toggle the officials were escorting him it's going to be another touchdown johnny there's no doubt in my mind that this crowd is loud but it's certainly not so loud that it's overshadowing the whistles of the officials everybody's standing around and confused and once again we're going to have a caucus out there on the field warren moon was running the option possibly set up to get away from the pressure of andre bruce well he ran right into andre bruce and once again he was unblocked but he went to the back and as warren moon cut up field jesse tucker nailed him and the ball went loose now they're going to have a debate as to whether or not the ball was dead but who blew the whistle nobody seems to think that they did and once again a major argument detont never had it this easy charlie truthfully i would have been i would have anticipated that early in the game that the emotion would have been in atlanta's favor they would have scored but if they have three touchdowns here that's going to be unbelievable a great job getting off of the block of munchak by tuggle as he makes the ball come loose along with green now from that shot you cannot see if it was a fumble or not well right there it's usually a given if the guy is down they're going to say ball's dead but he's sitting there waiting and if nobody blows the whistle he's doing the right thing running into the end zone from that angle you'd have to think that the ball is dead but we can't see the ball from that side it's interesting though there's automatic reaction of you know when i've got the ball any you know i get up and run with it anyway they signal them all down well give the atlanta defenders credit rather than stand around and debate as to whether or not what's going on both bobby butler and jesse tuggle were smart enough to take the ball into the end zone [Applause] it's a wild and weird first quarter officials timeout a wise decision [Laughter] from the back side we see there's andre bruce taking the back of war moon has no choice but to keep the ball nice play there by jesse tucker but does the ball come out right here it appears to be obscured right there it looks to me like jesse tuggle takes the ball away from warren moon but you see warren waving his arm which seems to indicate that maybe the ball was indeed loose barry pauses for a minute but he realizes he's so far ahead and tim green says get going don't stop run to the end zone now since the officials are not jocking with each other then obviously the replay official is involved here as you can tell by the crowd reaction really popular they love to see those huddles of officials and they have only the replay official can see only what you have seen at home and what we have seen here and you can't overrule it you can't overrule it because we uh we don't see anything that that causes it to be overruled and from all indications you can't tell as to whether or not it was a fumble or whether or not tuggle just made a great play and took it away from warren moon but if he did indeed take it away from warren moon it was clear that warren was on the ground but again on this play as well as the bobby butler recovery it's a touchdown the officials were almost an escort standard play here the option here he goes down and again there tuggle as often happens charlie you'll see that the defense will do that just to do it just to pull the ball aside and see if they can take it away in this case they're rewarded with six points heads up play by jesse tuggle davis with the point after it is good and with five minutes and 13 seconds left in the first quarter it is atlanta 21 and houston nothing charlie jack party's got to be thinking at this point that he's playing 18 people he feels that the officials against him twice now calls haven't gone his way right there you can see a little bit as he's going down that warren moon is losing control but there's no conclusive evidence that the ball is loose nobody else saw it and jesse tuggle is the one that saw it decided to be heads up and go for the end zone now here he's gonna debate it thinking to himself hey i fooled him you know okay that's great let's bring it on back and then tim green says no no no go and even the crowd isn't sure the crowd isn't sure what the deal is they've seen this before they've seen the guy pick up the ball millions of times and make this effort how many times to get rewarded for a touchdown but in this case it does despite the lame spike it is six points [Applause] and atlanta leads houston 21 to nothing well people who'd be just tuning in right now would say to themselves wow that run and shoot for atlanta must be terrific they've already got 21 points but 14 of them have come without them being even on the field and the other was a steve broussard run from six yards out camping a 49-yard touchdown draws that started with a fumble recovery ford will take it in the end zone and down it and houston again will start from the 20-yard line and head-butting continues here let's go to bob costas considerably less excitement really in dallas but the chargers and cowboys are tied at seven here's mark vlasic who rested the starting quarterback's job away from billy joe toliver a pass to craig mckeown who makes some nice moves and dives across that offsets troy aikman's 28-yarder to dennis mckinnon chargers and cowboys tied at seven charles thank you bob interesting quarterback situation in san diego with uh vlasic drawing the starting assignment over tolerable with two good young quarterbacks but there is not an ex anybody with great experience sitting behind them well i know that alex spanos is grateful that mark was able to take away from his uh corporate work there in the pickle factory just to come and play quarterback the run and shoot didn't work they try the running game lorenzo white and it's good for two maybe three tory epps with the tackle let's check the ticker no score pittsburgh cleveland second quarter denver leading the raiders by a field goal cincinnati in front indianapolis buffalo tied new england by one now over miami and san diego dallas as bob costas gave us the update tied at 7-7 and here it is atlanta 21 in houston nothing gibbons the intended receiver and the oilers can't make anything worse and warren moon is telling them calm down calm down i know we're down three touchdowns the crowds against us just calm down that's the veteran savvy of somebody 33 years of age saying hey there's three and a half more quarters of football to play let's relax a little bit and do what it is that got us this far third down and seven at the 23. pressure again for the backside this time the pass is complete to givens gibbs has the first down a flag is down back at the 15. well they're gonna call roughing the passer on andre bruce and of course this is one that's open for debate and this is the kind of thing that really gives them an opportunity to get some momentum we have a little bit of a fight on the field right now but andre bruce is wondering what the situation is all he did is come once again without anyone in front of him and just clobber warren broon bob mcelwee has to decide as to whether or not this was too much here we see the ball is thrown and he hits him right there it's what happens afterwards no that's a bad call i agree that's a bad call but bob mackel we saw was he saw andre bruce with his hands up attempt to go to his head and that's all that bob mcqueen but he stayed below he stayed at the shoulder line didn't he i'm not debating with you it was a rotten call but that's what bob mca we saw hence the additional 15 yards that jerry glanville is going to let somebody else know about boy boy he's greedy he's got a three touchdown lead he wants this one there it is yeah he completely messes with the right nothing wrong with that maybe bob mcawee was the same judge that awarded leonard the victory over hagler right swung and missed uh-oh let not against officials plus mackerel he's probably feeling that he's so familiar with andre bruce now he continues to see him in the backfield he feels like hey we have the personal foul roughing the passer 93 defense 15 yards from the previous spot first certainly charlie we would have anticipated the fact that the atlanta falcons would have had a lot of personal fouls but in this case this is definitely a phantom foul and the falcons with a three touchdown lead do not have to cheap shot at all so the ball goes out to the 38-yard line and it's first down and atlanta now with six in the secondary and warren who is really taking a beating he's got time it's deflected at the line of scrimmage [Applause] it is intercepted and then fumbled will they know they wrote it incomplete good call that's a good call gibbons the intended receiver brian jordan almost had it once again double coverage in that situation warren moon didn't see jordan he threw it right into his arms mixing up their coverages in the secondary and warren moon looks left then comes back to the right right here you'll see a bracket coverage and you'll see that jordan's running underneath there he has the interception and it's actually a good play by gibbons receiver turned defensive back to strip him up the ball or else it's atlanta's going the other way here you see moon looking and he knows right when he threw it but he's a little bit disappointed because he threw it right into the arms of george he was lucky to get that one back and ten again atlanta leads 27 to nothing charlotte they're going to look at this one on the instant replay but i think it's pretty clear that he didn't have possession of it give givens credit a lot of times receivers won't do that receivers will just try to make the tackle and pull the guy down but givens knew that if he could strip him with the ball as he does in this situation right to jordan look at gibbons going over the top taking the ball away from right there jordan doesn't have it he doesn't have possession of it a good job by ernest gibbs down 27 nothing you need any little play that can help you all right let's review that again because it is possession and two feet on the ground now he has both feet on the ground he has he has his hands on the ball and then does the ball come loose after he goes down but the minute he touches the ball givens goes over and gets a piece of his arm and strips him of it you'll see right here he makes the catch right here but right there givens touches it now there's one standpoint right now it's starting to come out and that's the second step okay great job by givens it was a good call it's an incomplete pass i know that ernest gibbons would rather much rather prefer to get the ball and not play db but in this situation who knows if houston goes down and scores and gives him a little bit of momentum this is one of those plays we'll look back on is a very big play second and 10 at the 46. given slips to tackle and the second man gets in so houston putting together a drive that started back in their own territory scott case missed the tackle bobby butler made it reverse it butler missed it and scott made it but for one of the few times both marcus cotton and andre bruce are blocked in this situation warren looks left and comes back right he has plenty of time givens wide open here i thought it was oh there's doug smith going over the top yeah you've got to cut yeah we've got to call that almost going in head first great reception michael haynes pulls it in when we asked michael about the offense that the atlanta falcons are running he said it's a receiver's dream well you know it's got to be a long day for somebody like johnny meads here he's been in every single play on a very hot day in a situation where they're trying to stretch the defense here is a linebacker he plays more as a defensive back he has to rush back into coverage sometimes blitz sometimes support the run he makes a nice tackle here but it's after the first down first down at the houston 28 yard line three and a half minutes to go in the [Music] third atlanta with another completion this one to sean collins and richard johnson with the tackle of course there's been a lot of penalties to help this drive but one of the questions about the run and shoot was whether or not if you were a hit in the game if you could keep the ball and knock some time off the clock and have time of possession chris miller continues to throw the short conservative passes where they go out he's in the inside moves to the outside cuts back gets open seven eight nine yard gains that drives houston oilers crazy and as a result they're able still without a semblance of a running game to knock some time off the clock two-back offense steve broussard and keith jones [Applause] and here's busan [Applause] and he should pick up the first down he needed a couple of yards i think he got him both al smith with a tackle here we get a chance to see jones lead him to the outside he stutters a little bit inside and as a result it slows him down but he does get just enough for the first down there's that low center of gravity and one of the advantages also to that as i mentioned earlier because he's not going to get injured as often because those big thick legs are going to be more protected against injury a first down at the 16 yard line just outside the 16 actually just inside the seventh [Applause] 52 yards in a touchdown miller with lots of time has a man open and he under throws him at the five but he still scoops it up and it's floyd dixon it's a great improvisational play by miller and the protection breaks down and weaves around a little bit dixon was supposed to go out to the flat and he waves him to cut up field there's a nice touch by miller to get him the ball and dixon is able to reach down underneath and make the catch inside the five here we get a chance to see it the play is obviously designed to go to the other side he pumps there he flips him up field go away from the flat and right there dixon's able to get his arms underneath the ball nice play close to being right there are his hands underneath it they are certainly looks like the nose of the ball might have hit the grass but the official didn't see it first and goal for the falcons four yard line atlanta now with two tight ends and now they're going to review that last reception to see if they want to change it well as i say the nose of the ball looked like it might have hit the ground hodge excuse me did a good job of getting underneath it in that situation here dixon rather right here you can see the heels of his hands where's the nose of the ball if his hands are underneath it in most cases you got to give him the catch but again you know last time i was wrong so who knows what they're going to decide they could overrule this one if they want to of course they could overrule any of them if they wanted to come to think of it what's the mysterious replay booth waves him up field touch pass right here from that angle you can't really see whether or not the ball is there but you got to give him credit for the fact they're able to improvise see i think the auto caller back why because i think i think it hits the ground right through there right his hands are underneath it i know you're right right there well there's the nose of the ball and there's the grass so you're right that's that evidently that's what they saw in the replay booth because they called it incomplete i think they should and i think they made a good call so they're one for one not bad they'd be leading the american league in hitting are you charitable and again uh we've had difficulties intermittent problems with the official's microphone so we're not able to pass all of the information along to you but being the clever broadcasters when they moved it back to the original line of scrimmage we're able to figure it out nothing gets passed up that's right we've got it so it's first and ten of the 16. [Applause] one of the interesting things that the falcons were going to do they had about four dummy people on the sideline signaling the signals in because houston would be able to read them and pick them up because they had that same system last year at russia and he's going to lose a couple well i don't think that picking up the signals on the sideline has had anything to do with a ball game that has been completely dominated by the defense of atlanta needs and sean jones in the last tackle you know we mentioned a little bit about the improvisational play that chris miller had earlier one of the things that happened to him last year is he couldn't call audibles he had no audible situation up at the line of scrimmage so if he came up there and they had to play perfectly defense there was nothing he could do about it now this year he has that option and you can see as a result of plays like the one he had two plays ago and some of the throws that he's made earlier in the game it's evident that he continues to grow in confidence and those are the kind of plays that give you that kind of confidence over the course of the year the kind where you make something out of nothing boys high school's got to be proud of this guy when they brought that play back to the second and ten now it is third and twelve the flag is down and the pass is incomplete and a flag is downfield down downfield and we have four seconds left in the third a lot of stuff going on out here looked to me like richard johnson was going for the ball but they collided and that's what the referee saw it's got to be the hardest call on a football field interference but it's all going to come back anyway oh we called it offensive passive appearance illegal use of hands on offense and offensive fast interference was the signal that's interesting illegal use of the hands to the face 61 offense that's decline offensive pass interferences decline fourth down according to the signals they had offensive pass interference and they had offense illegal use of the hands on offense and they refuse them both and so the down does not go over it becomes fourth down i realize that this is a long shot but maybe they should have taken one of the penalties and for no other reason to try to push them out of field goal range because now if he kicks the field goal that's 30 points to make up as it is if they could have missed it then four touchdowns still puts them back in the game i know it's a long time but that's certainly something i agree with no 36 yards on the field goal attempt and receivers run out of bounds the clock does not stop until the five minute mark and so as a result with 30 points behind you know they can hit those out routes and go out of bounds but it's not going to matter because once they get the ball back in play the clock starts again and so what i think is going to happen in the future is a lot of those big comebacks those 30 down 35 to 7 down 28 to 3 kind of situations are not going to occur anymore because they're just not going to have enough time to come back and the cube gerald mcneill downs it in the end zone and houston will start from their own 20. let's look at the statistics through three quarters well yards rushing seems to be an issue here in the second half the falcons have been able to take some time off the clock by giving broussard the ball but of course once again the key statistic here is the turnovers five turnovers have led to the points for the falcons they've been able to maintain that edge the penalties that they have 11 for 90 are not the result of the usual glanville penalties but in fact aggressive offsides holdings things of that nature [Applause] bruce matthews is the center jay pennison bothered by the catch good play by both both players in that situation was just that offense wins out in this case first down at the 20-yard line it is intersecting the flag is down neon dion with the interception and he loses the ball it is fumbled stripped from him but atlanta recovers it but don't forget we've got to flag well scott case was able to get it back but they're going to call this on dion sanders they say that he had contact before and they're going to say that he pushed off on jeffries warren moon looked at the other side and came back and they're called dion for pass interference it was a bad throw by warren because he had jeffries for the touchdown but he under threw it a little bit did a good job looking right and coming back left but for some reason he under threw it beyond pass interference 21 defense first down he will get a chance to see it he tries to get an inside release and dion does a good job now right here you're going to see look at that he comes oh boy really ticky tack there he had his hands on his hips and look at that jefferson's already screaming for it he gets it that's no harm no call back no you no that's a bad call in that situation you gotta let it go and the reason i say that isn't just because of the fact that it's a ticky tac foul but you know over the course of the season charlie with four wide receivers flying all over the place and so many balls being thrown these games are not going to be as short as they think if they're going to call that sort of thing a penalty it'll be first and goal to go at the one yard line [Applause] and now an official's timeout moon has completed 19 of 36 236 yards two touchdowns one interceptions two sacks two fumbles and he was beat up in the first half by andre bruce this is the only formation right here that they have that they do not have a wide receiver in they have a three tight end set but in effect none of them are tight ends in fact they've got two tackles at the tight ends in this situation in their goal line offense but it appeared that one of the tight ends whoever it might have been it might have been matthews in that case start 73 offense i think he got excited maybe they thought they're gonna throw him a pass and it's a procedure penalty against the oilers and you're right they don't have any tied into their ball club and so also in this situation that when the tackles moves outside now yes he lifted that right foot but technically in that situation he could have said he was getting himself set i've seen a lot of players most of them because he is a tight end in that situation he also has to report so he's not it's not tackle a tackle i know you haven't been around that long charlie but you'll remember bob the boomer brown of the eagles used to do that all the time pumping with his leg and they never called him but they called on williams in this case interesting though doesn't that call go from tackle to tackle i would think so yeah he's not a tackle well but again see what does the official see he sees number 73 assumes he's an interior alignment he's got to throw the flag yeah [Music] kind of happened to catch earlier of tony jones so now the official now has stopped the clock and now he has started the club all of a sudden receivers come back out another flag is down gibbons says that he caught it official running in said the same thing but the official with the closest look was throwing a flag well they're going to call in the secondary again they're going to call some sort of interference and i'm telling you this has got to be the longest it's like the movie the longest day for these he got it is holding refused and it's a touchdown bobby butler gets caught in this situation we see warren moon right here cut to the right this is a nice catch right here great of hands ernest gibbons way to go down and go get it that's the advantage of being a smurf you're closer to the ground nice catch by gibbons actually good defense there by butler as well so the oilers were able to piece together that touchdown drive they add the point after and it's 37 to 21 with still 10 minutes and 40 seconds left to go back with a atlanta has been penalized 119 yards the oilers 65 just to bring you up to date there and there's the time remaining just over six and a half and moving just outside the 40-yard line of the falcons [Applause] and over the middle and through the woods is mike roger i can't believe i said that i believe it it's a first down well it's been a long day well it's that hairdo on the voodoo doll you and all the wide receivers were in a circle he looked like he was out of place yeah it kind of looked like gulliver in the little fusions actually i mean being over six foot makes you taller than fact there's no call for that in football huh i'm all for being aggressive but you just can't have that happen pass is complete and out of bounds at the three-yard line i suppose you could say it i'm also surprised that they ran the ball because if it fails as it did in this situation it's going to cost them another 25 to 30 seconds they've got a throw even though they're on the 3 yard line and now the clock is round second down goal to go moon has thrown for three touchdowns pressure from the backside does he have it and now four as houston scores it is bernard four that's a nice catch by bernard ford earlier in the game we were a little bit critical of the receivers not being able to come up with the ball but in this situation you can see ford extends himself and makes a really nice catch while he's being covered fairly effectively 3 43 is the time remaining and it's a 37 to 27 ball game with the extra points still to come this is a big extra point because if they're able to get this through that means they're two scores away from actually going ahead and stranger things have happened in three minutes and 42 seconds [Applause] we had some movement i'm along the offensive line and then some jumping by the defensive line and i'm sure there's a lot of conversating also going on a lot of conversation and of course a lot of this is the byproduct of fatigue as we've mentioned at nauseam this game is lasting an awful long time and it gets that much harder just to get down in your stance and go through the motions and of course naturally if you get hit or somebody goofs up tempers get short once again male mckesmo rears its ugly head and it is still a very warm and humid evening here in atlanta and it's about 7 24 here [Applause] oh boy no good that is a big miss tony zindejas misses the extra point let's look at that again well the snap is fine and so is the hole it's just a matter of the five yards takes away that angle but if he has a bad a bad swing it's not going to go through in that situation of course if it's right on the two-yard line that's probably good it weaves its way inside the post but in this case it isn't and it remains to be seen weren't fooled they were fooled earlier in the game by but now at the end they're going to let it go was he trying to buy a little time well he was hoping that they'd get fooled he'd be able to run around for a first down because they wouldn't anticipate they'd do a misdirection play but in that case obviously they weren't too fooled by it the kids are in school football's in the air and the to be very deceptive next day in the paper when people look and see 40 to 34 and say no that must have been a great close game a score here a success alongside kick and it could well be a close game jones 24 yard line you see a three deep secondary now they're going to try to prevent the long play from happening houston taking a lot of time to get the playoff [Applause] dunkin on the receiving end i think you've got to take your last time out if you're houston and they just did nice prediction really just there it's part of it is the fatigue the the length of the ball game the humidity uh they're just not able to operate the hurry up offense in a hurry up fashion you know what happens is that fans sitting at home are saying themselves what's the point you know why do this you know why buy score touchdown it's not going to make any difference it's only going to close it a little bit i mean i don't understand that but what happens is that if you know in certain situations that you can do things if you know that you can score in this case in less than a minute then that gives your offense confidence for when it happens later on in the season obviously it's going to help warren moon statistics but that's not the priority they want to salvage a little bit of pride feel good about themselves and even and if they can narrow it to a six point margin who knows that might affect the psyche of some of the players on the bench [Applause] and maybe it won't third down at the 21-yard line third and three moon 30-49 now 384 yards and four touchdowns this is also a good chance for the tony jones of the world if they can get in the end zone to maybe warrant some more playing time down the line as well tipped incomplete with two falcons going for the interception you know both scott case and john ratey wanted that ball so bad they collided with one another nothing like getting that pick it's one of those things that stands out for defensive players they want that interception they wanted us so bad they knock each other off of it here you'll see the dimmer goes up and tips the ball case sees it big hit there right there he's got it but then rady thinks he has michael murphy thing or a paula abdul thing and instead check it out surface okay he's not going to soul train either but he might get into star search and look who he's celebrating with the defensive this point too chella dion sanders was talking about the fact that you know for the first time in the falcons history they had an undefeated pre-season and he said that that bandwagon was getting bigger and bigger as the falcons won game everybody was jumping on it and you got to figure right now that everybody is jumping on the dion sanders bandwagon even though we only hit a buck 58 for the yankees [Applause] and still with 13 seconds to go greg davis will kick off to bernard ford [Applause] high and short [Applause] and another flag is down and another flag is gone why would somebody who has at least four touchbacks today not just kick the thing out of the end zone do you understand that well one thing he had to kick it from uh from the 30-yard line because he had lost to five yards because of the flag in the engine maybe he just didn't feel like he could quite reach it they penalized that dance too oh yeah could he conversate with the official let it go he did it may have cost him another five now the clock is not moved and the reason being inside the last two minutes of either half on a kickoff the clock does not start until it has been touched in the field of play
