1988 Week 12 - Philadelphia at N.Y. Giants

in their first beating the giants couldn't quite knock randall cunningham off his feet but this afternoon both teams will try to maintain a foothold in the nfc east race for the 108th time in this long and storied series between these two teams the nfc east looks like this the giants at seven and four tied with the cardinals who are losing that game's not over in houston yet that's the score however with three and a half minutes approximately remaining houston leading 38 to 20. so it looks like the giants have a chance to take over first place again all by themselves i'm pat summerall here with john madden you look at the philadelphia eagles john and the name of randall cunningham comes immediately to mind it's hard to believe one guy does so much well that's what i thought you know we go we talk to giant players and coaches and they all say we have to contain we have to stop randall cunningham and you say well geez it's a team game one guy really can't be that big but when you look at what randall cunningham does for this offense you can see it here if you look at his passing here 72 percent of their offense comes from randall cunningham passing 11 comes from him running himself in fact he's the leading rusher on the team 17 for all the others so randall cunningham is 83 of their offense so i think for philadelphia to do well randall cunningham has to have a big day for the giants to do well they have to be able to control this guy john i think one thing we have to address it's been raining all day long here in new york and in the meadowlands very hard early this morning it slacks off and then it starts back again it's hammering down right now what kind of an effect is that gonna have well the first thing you think of when you see a rainy day is you have to be able to run and you realize that neither one of these teams are good running teams so then you say who can handle a wet football the best and i think that's what it's going to boil down to i think they're both going to try and run i don't think either one would be successful i know that the giants are really fired up they just had a meeting of yelling and screaming in the locker room harry carson told me it was george martin who started it and harry said he has never heard a meeting like george martin just conducted in a giant locker room george martin who is a veteran and probably playing his last year with the giants made such a great contribution in this area as well as to the football team giants have won the toss and the eagles luis zumdejas will kick off [Applause] [Applause] the giant quarterback as has been the case for so many many years now facing this front four reggie white mike pitts jerome brown and clyde simmons up front seth joyner mike reichenbach todd bell the linebackers and in the secondary royale young and eric allen the rookie the cornerback wes hopkins and andre waters a couple of hitters at safety you know what happened pat all the power went off here in the stadium as you look up at the scoreboards there's no light whatsoever nor are there any clocks all the school boards are out the time will be kept on the field by the line judge time will be kept on the field you just heard that announcement from tom dooley the 32nd clock apparently is the only one that's working but none of the scoreboard clocks nor the yardage markers nor game time are in operation the lights are still on and that's lucky they'd have to stop play if they weren't defeated no more left side for a game of about six frankenbacher tripped him up with west hopkins here is the offense for the giants sims the quarterback joe morris who just carried and maurice carthage the rudders emanuel and baker the wide receivers and mark bavaro the tight end up front it's robert's aard oats eric moore and doug reisenberg a very young offensive line particularly in three spots jerome brown made the stop it should be enough for a first down and it is for the giants yeah that's a good way to start off when you're fired up is bring your team out and start running start running right at them let your offensive lineman you just been in the locker room you have this big fiery clock you come out the guys are all fired up they want to hit someone or something let them take off and let them have some run blocks [Applause] and replace morris maurice carthage [Applause] let's watch reggie white here pat we know that he is probably the best pass rusher in the league eisenberg is starting his first year so they're not going to let him take him by himself they keep mark favaro in there the tight end to help doug reisenberg block against him reggie white is double just about every passing play he's in there second ken adams and carthage in the handoff right at the line of scrimmage in fact buddy ryan calls him rock combat and i'll tell you you can see why he came in there he has that look in his eyes doesn't he well buddy ryan has that same look i guess he was a linebacker but he comes in there he reads run he's going to rock him right back where they came from well he's lucky that buddy ryan knows his name because he usually just calls guys by numbers [Music] knocked him out of bounds in about the two [Applause] seth joyner got the juggling interception and brought it back 29 yards first and gold eagles sir buddy ryan said last night that that if seth joiner ever got on a winning team he'll be all pro he feels he's one of the best linebackers in the league i'll tell you right there that was a heck of a fool there not only to get out there in the flat on his own he was doubling to get out there in the flat but then to tip that ball and then catch it and then get it down to the two yard line first three [Applause] in place of tony was back with buyers gary reasons made the stop harry carson as you probably know by now underwent arthroscopic surgery friday and he's been put on the injured reserve list so he's out for four weeks i'll tell you that's something that the eagles haven't really gotten off to a good start you can see by that graphic and that was one of the things that buddy ryan taught him well don't worry about that in 60 minutes if we don't start off who will play foot in second quarter and second half myers is the deep back [Applause] flag says i'm sure now the scoreboards are back in operation 11 57 left to play in the first quarter the penalty is going to be against the giants about a half yard they're so close and the rain continues i think that's one of the things when you see in a big rivalry game because both of these teams are fighting for their playoff lives and i think you get a big emotional game a rivalry game and i think you're going to see things on a rainy day like turnovers down here jumping outside cunningham no signal as yet as he ran the quarterback sneak and apparently [Music] [Applause] one thing about randall cunningham he only weighs about 200 pounds he does have that leaping ability and the ability to slither now again it's not where his head is it's where the ball is and that looks awfully close because all that fall has to do is touch that goal line at any point it is awfully close the end of the ball is almost touching the goal cunningham drives the quarterback sneak again and this time it's touchdown the ball across the plane he got in but barely [Music] gary carson was just up here in the in the booth before the game i said how's laurence taylor he said i'll tell you he's ready to play he's in the locker room he is really fired up today he didn't want him to have that touch down there he still doesn't think they made it very unhappy taylor sprints off the field got off in time [Music] the extra point buys and day tells it and it's seven nothing quickly in favor of the eagles with 11 16 left to play in the first quarter at rainey giants stadium [Music] 11 16 left to play at giant stadium zendejas is set to kick it off and finally they're going to give him something to kick like a ball that helps i'll tell you that first kickoff that they had really uh excited this place both teams come out here all fired up and uh it knocked the scoreboard lights right out this house could do it again boom the whole joint goes down [Music] lets it bounce in the end zone and finally falls on it and [Applause] [Music] we have a new thing now that we can run this back and forth but look here i don't think cunningham got over watch the ball i don't think the ball ever crosses the plane but you know the interesting thing watch where the ball is before it snapped part of the ball was on the goal line it broke the plane before it was snapped and i don't think cunningham got in and that's what lawrence taylor was so excited about that device that new device by the way is something that coaches use when they review the coaching films during the week so they can run it back and forth of course guy fans [Music] let's watch lawrence taylor again on this goal line play watch him where he makes a hit and then he's going to say he's going to get up like that or he gets up he writes right to the official you know i think he was right that's called in your face never the last seven nothing here says back to throw under pressure but the pass is complete brought by baker cincinnati over dallas in the third quarter cleveland beating pittsburgh our beat pittsburgh at the final buffalo and the jets in overtime tied at six in the rain in buffalo minnesota 12-3 there's over tampa bay and detroit under their new coach wayne fonts beating green bay [Music] [Applause] raiders and falcons nothing nothing first in the coliseum second and nine here with the eagles leading the giant seven nothing and just over ten minutes left to play in the first quarter the rain comes a little bit harder that's possible and the biggest job today to make this a real football game is the officials keeping the footballs right daniel sims draws away mars outside the 35 to about the 37 picked up four stopped by seth joyner this is one of the things that the giants think that they can do successfully and that's run knows delay or draw play said last week the steelers had a lot of success against the eagles with draw plays and and the giants were hoping that they could today and that gives you two things one it gives you a little run and two it calms down that pass rush a little third down [Applause] they got the eagles blitzing their two safety men stacy robinson 62 yards from sims stacy's first reception of the year as you said matt that's one thing about that buddy ryan defense it's the all or none they came into blitz they came at an all out blitz if you get the time like sims did and you can find a guy open you're going to get big plays mcfadden for the extra point the x eagle with jeff i stepler hoving [Music] [Applause] 7-7 tie at giant stadium with 8 57 left to play in the first quarter 7-7 at giant stadium the eagles and the giants 8 57 left that's the story of the scoring drive five plays 80 yards 62-yard touchdown pass from phil sims to robinson mcfadden set to kick it off the eagles have an interesting return team pat they had 12 guys out there i i just see michael haddocks just ran off the field but they were in the old 5-3 [Music] [Applause] adrian white made the stop john let's watch it here pat we see here what we're gonna get here is the two safeties coming up the middle now the giants do a good job of picking them up see here's what sims boom boom boom flap the whole thing now here comes robinson underneath touchdown i'll tell you that was something eric everett was the guy man-to-man on him but the big thing was a protection and picking up that blitz along with reggie white friesenberg did a heck of a job at picking up chris carter's foot wide right ron johnson is to the left [Applause] [Music] bring up fire excuse me you know keith byers is he is a guy who when the eagles got him and buddy ryan got him they really expected a lot of them and it's kind of been disappointing as a a runner but he's been a real good receiver for him [Applause] [Music] two tight ends for the angels this time right side for a couple maybe three jim burton was the first man to hit him i think jim burt was saying yesterday he says we're at a crossroads here he says we have to put up or shut up he said to stop looking for big plays and start making them that's the way a nose tackle clocks you know like put up or shut up get down here spread your six from your four and get entrenches and go after it man he's been replaced by eric howard down cunningham he's close to a first down gain of four it's going to be a measure i would imagine reasons on the stop randall cunningham last time they played the giant snap monday night game through 41 times he was 31 for 41 and he says you know today he said i'd like to get a little running going he said i don't like to throw 41 times but if we have to if that's what it takes to beat him what the heck will go out and do that too but i've always said the best friend a quarterback has is a running game first down well it takes a lot of the heat off of them that was on october the 10th on a monday night against the giants 31 out of 41 his career high three touchdowns no interceptions and 369 yards but if you're looking for the utopian situation to a quarterback that's not it fires a split wide left for this time as cunningham goes back to thoroughly gets it outside keith jackson is rookie tight end who's the nfl's leading receiver their first round draft choice and he is everything they expected he would be you know he's very well going to be the rookie of the year and probably the pro bowl tight end he's a big guy weighs 250 pounds runs like a 4-5-40 he said his biggest adjustment he has is reading coverage he said block it's flocking he said those zones drive me crazy i'm still not sure what they're doing second and seven from the 31. finally got control and picked up four yards stopped by the banks that's the final houston 38 phoenix 20. and so now the cardinals are seven and five philadelphia can tie them with a victory today and the giants can move a game ahead you know it'd be interesting if the eagles win today and the redskins win tomorrow night there could be four teams tied for first place in this division of course if the giants win then they'll be in first place all by themselves third and four from a 34. [Applause] cunningham for jackson got a hand on it incomplete they have to punch carl banks was nearest to jackson that's the kind of match-up they hoped for i'll tell you lawrence taylor watch him right here he was awfully close to randall cunningham mike matt darwin has blocked him there but watch him he looks like his right shoulder's okay today tailor it he's right there and just hitting away right as cunningham through it that's a good pass rush when you can be on him as he froze it tells you to punt for philadelphia back deep and here is on the run kicking and not bad he got a high snap and got off a pretty good kick after prancing around for a while so with 5 37 left to play first quarter 41 yard putt after all that and the score tied at seven give a play here john well the uh john telchick does does a couple of things right here one watch the catch he has to jump up makes a one-handed catch then run towards right he's had three blocked all year this year he leads a league in that department and that was a great athletic move you know that guy was all madden last year and with that type of play he may make it again this year would remind you of that great one-handed stab that grey guy made in the super bowl in tampa and beat ahead for three reggie white played that excellent you know the the thing that a defensive lineman has to do is just get up there and if you see it's a faster start than when you redraw stop the fast road it doesn't work again it was reggie white who cut him down no game [Music] no huddle again third six [Applause] yards wes hopkins stop tomorrow but they'll go in a hurry again this is a guy that the eagle defense worries the most about is march mavaro they almost didn't get the change set mars is tripped up by andre waters who came up to make the force after a gate of three and bill parcells just signaled keep going with it don't huddle up just line up we got him going here [Music] who gets it and scrambles for a first down marcel saying let's keep it going mike frankenbot was right there in that play how sims got the ball off was amazing and then how he got it back [Applause] on the stop and again play number six coming up with no huddle buddy ryan you say he has to get his defenses in quicker he has to make his fall one advantage they have is they keep the same 11 guys in there and that's what the giants want them to do adam's in place of horus and he gets the carry and he's tripped up by mike pitts for a loss of four that'll slow him down now that's the thing in fact that did that did end it they were the giants were going towards a record with no huddle in the first quarter and then that loss stopped it because now they get to a third down they want to get the right play the right substitutes in they'll substitute their nickel offense and we'll see stacy robinson coming in and then the eagles will go with their nickel defense third and six at the eagle 44. now things settle down just a little bit sims will operate from the spread robinson and baker split wide left robinson comes in motion [Music] [Applause] over the head of stacy robinson and they're too far for a field goal on the coverage phil sims was upset because stacey robinson had william frazelle beaten in fact he had about five yards on him and all sims had to do is get that ball out there but that i think that that's the type of pass that this rain could be affected because that thing looked like it took off a little longer [Music] back to punt ari buford [Music] toward the end zone and go in there so they'll bring it out to the 20 a 44-yard punt by buford 215 left to play first quarter 7-7 time [Music] that rain continues even harder 215 left with a tie here fourth quarter cincinnati over dallas 38-24 cleveland beat pittsburgh buffalo won in overtime to clinch the afc east earliest that's been done since they moved to a 16-game schedule bears beat tampa bay enjoyed over green bay kansas city upsets seattle boy they've had some problems in kansas city and san diego leaves the rams new orleans shutting out denver over the right side for chris carter covered by sheldon white you know it was interesting that we were watching how the giants are always going to double on reggie white the same thing is happening with lawrence taylor you know they're not letting matt darwin just block him but by himself watch taylor here 56 coming from the outside see darwin block him and then havoc sits right there and waiting for [Music] [Applause] to walter abercrombie played so many years with the steeler [Music] you know i think that's one of the problems that giants are having with their defenses is they're getting big plays against their past defense and you know they're they're having a lot of completion they're getting a lot of runs and not not only that i don't think the safeties have really been tackling though but either one of them had an interception all year and you need some turnovers they need nine for a first down and cunningham rifles in the direction of ron johnson in complete and they'll have to punt again harry williams with good coverage i think wendy cunningham has stayed in the pocket every pass thus far i think that's one of the things the giant defense would like to have continue all day i would think that will change however because he is even more dangerous when he comes out of it and at some point he's going to say hey i'm going to have to take this game over chelsea gets a good snap and gets off a good punch but he will feel it in the 40s makes it safer it'll be about the 41 word giant stadium east rutherford new jersey the eagles and the giants tied at seven pat summerhall john madden in a rainy rainy stadium today 121 left in the first quarter total offense you see it's been dominated by the giants but the big interception led to the eagle touchdown the giants popped it right back but bill simms touchdown [Music] and take it down by mike pitts and hopkins one of the plans the giants have today is put george adams in there because george adams usually goes in on the passing down get adams in there and maybe the eagles would go to their nickel think it's a pass and then they'd be able to run now adams went in there and eagles stated regular defense they didn't make any subs is now the giant tight end up on the left side seems to throw it quickly who gets the midfield stopped by todd bell who is now a linebacker of course when he was with the bears he was a defensive back let's watch reggie white here pat and we'll see he's a power rusher watch he's not going to tell you that what he just goes into reason for boom gets his helmet in that flap you see gets him going back get him off balance then make your move whereas when you have that much power you don't need a lot of food 295 and you're that quick all of those things [Music] seth joyner got the pass interception earlier gets to sims [Applause] this is a guy buddy ryan was talking about he said this guy plays like an all-pro and so far in this first quarter he has he got the interception now he gets the sack that's an all-pro linebacker day had a chance watch him he's right there he comes all the way from the outside no one touches him but she just runs by everything then he lays out perfect rush perfect timing [Music] well you watch him he's the outside guy in the left-hand side of the screen and nobody picked him up but usually that guy when he's that far out shouldn't be able to get there if the snap and the kick were perfectly huntingham on timed down as the eagles get another turnover pants intended for chris carter incomplete sheldon white will carry canards back there with him you know one thing that when cunningham goes back to pass they're going to take care of taylor the tackle starts on him then he starts on a stunt the guard comes and the guy who finally got him down was the center dave remington but wherever he lawrence baylor goes there's going to be some white jerseys popular second and can taylor this side this time marshall and eric darcy met at the quarterback [Applause] it's been a while it's been a while for leonard marshall we're going to see him coming from that side dorsey coming from the other side marshall takes an outside pass rush and it looked like cunningham had good coverage he had to wait for a while and that allowed dorsey and marshall to get there i think that was part brush and part coverage sack cunningham is only one out of five for three yards [Applause] you talk about some hits out there we're getting them today they're getting the blue jerseys hitting the white jerseys the white jerseys hitting the blue jerseys and the blue jerseys hitting the blue jersey eric howard was in a stunt he's waiting right there they always want to keep him contained you know not let him get outside your run [Applause] he just barely got it away mcconkey signals clear catch him at 20. the eagles wound up with a fourth and 32 after they blocked the punt and looked like they had another turnover that could have put them atop the scoreboard didn't happen 7-7 the score remains [Music] 7-7 but look at the giant domination so far total outfits at the bottom 121 for the giants minus four now for the eagle and of course the reason the uh score is tied is because that interception that uh sims through the seth joyner big play by joyner i think this reign is really affecting the quarterbacks i mean they see him throwing an interception he threw a bad one on third down uh randall cunningham was one for five for three yards 26 yards and sacks that goes back to what we talked about at the beginning and nothing doing jerome brown from the middle of the eagle defense brought it down sorry that was the thing we were talking about that the giants wanted to do is get that delay stuff and it's tough on first down because i think the eagles are playing run on first down anyway i think they're playing for the run they're not going to be rushed to get a delay the [Music] [Applause] next saturday night the nba kicks off on cbs with a rematch of last year's nba finals the brand new palace in auburn hills michigan cbs sports presents prime time the los angeles lakers and the detroit pistons pistons are eight and one in the early going looking to avenge last year's loss in the finals and the lakers of course are again atop the pacific division and planning on repeating next saturday prime time 8 30 east [Applause] [Music] one yard that's the thing you want to do is you want to get the quarterback to have to put the ball down to flush him then get him moving and then have that second wave come in on him the eagles did it perfectly that time beaufort back to punt again left hand tell you what unusual and spectacular that catch that catch was a lot like telcek's play on the punt where he jumped up matted it in got it with one hand i'll tell you how he could even see that thing is amazing how he can see around pepper johnson he got that right hand up tipped it brought it back and kept [Music] the oilers in what they call now the astrodome the house of pain won again brown stay in it buffalo they win the afc east title and two here at giant stadium cunningham eagle first down at about the 37 pepper johnson wayne fox gets his first win as the new head coach of the detroit lions kansas city beats seattle and san diego over the rams by ken that's a shocker new orleans keeps looking better and better don't they they sure do they're a very well coached team and looks like to me they're right here they have to be the favorite western division [Applause] led by giles finally stopped by leonard marshall you know it's interesting pat that the giants are playing today without harry carson he had that knee injury and then they he had it scoped on friday they put him on ir he's very upset about that he thought that he probably couldn't play this week but he thought even with it he could have played next week but i'll tell you one and you'd expect him to be down a little bit those things kind of by their team but this defense this half this giant defense looks much more intense than they did a week ago lost three yards harry carson by the way will be our guest on the halftime show today with brent nerve and dick butkus let's watch his defense here and the thing that the giants do so well is they come here and we'll see reasons 55 is going to make the tackle watch the whole group works down down down don't give him anything no cut that see all blue jersey there has no cut back force him right there he had no place to go and that's how you get a loss third and ten the eagles of the giant 38 eric howard is the man in the middle of the giant defense looking right in the face of dave remington [Music] [Applause] a little swinging match at the end of things those third down situations are what killed the giants last week against the cardinals down in phoenix and the way randall cunningham threw that he looked just like joe namath i mean he he looked like a rifle with that thing i mean he sat back there and that thing came out of his arm like it was shot first in canton the ball of the giant hasn't been playing much and of course with anthony tony broke his hand haddock has to play now he's been a little disappointment to this team too he was a number one draft choice and has kind of been a back up and he's a good blocker and he's been kind of there and they pass protection that type of thing but not used much as a runner second and seven ball of the giant 19. seven seven tie scores off again the headaches and this time he's hit right up the line of scrimmage stacked up by eric dorsey he might have lost a yard i'll tell you who does a good job there pat in the middle is jim burt the nose tackle what's your nose tackle there the first thing he has to do is he has to be able to hold that line right there hold that line there now watch him right there see there's no movement there no movement no movement force him in now the other guys can get in there you get five blue jerseys in here they don't have a chance guy that cunningham wanted to go to he had chris carter isolated man-to-man under rookie sheldon white and sheldon white had good coverage on that one because he had no help with man-to-man he had to handle that all by himself white replacing mark collins and has thus far done an excellent job from 38 with tail chick holding they do a lot of tricks is good from 38 yards away it didn't look like it you think it should look but it does on the scoreboard for philadelphia they lead by at three all john madden the eagles have just taken the lead after a 38-yard 37-yard field goal by zenteon 10 plays 45 yards we have 746 left to play in the first half at giant stadium blessedly the rain has finally stopped [Music] lugermost and haddocks back deep for the giants and deoz will kick it off [Music] [Applause] [Music] to see this rain stopping i think that both quarterbacks have been affected by it early in the game and uh the walls looked like they were wet early and now they still have the problem because when the center goes up over the ball and he presses down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] knocked out of bounds by andre waters you know it's funny matt here it's been such a tough year for quarterbacks and if we look there's only seven guys in this league of 28 that started every game and of course we have the two of them in this game randall cunningham and phil sims and i think one that's a tribute to them and being able to move and get rid of the fall but i don't think that was maurice carton the ball carrier stopped by mike pitts after a gain of two it'll bring up a third and two situation you know you think you're in the 12th game of the season and there's only seven quarterbacks that have played every game i think these guys i think phil sims i think the reason he plays every game because he gets rid of the ball quickly he is not going to take a sack i think randall cunningham has played every game because he can move and run and get away plus sims is a big strong guy he's going to come out of there [Applause] rams move closer to san diego 17-14 the saints shutting out denver 21-0 and atlanta ahead of the raiders 3-0 they were just talking about phil sims and the reason he didn't move a lot but he does get rid of the ball quickly and now he runs with one and he gets up limping this is a dangerous thing when a guy gets in the open field like that and he gets hit from the front and both sides that's a tough deal first down at the 29. diamonds hit just as he let it go pressure from the outside from clyde simmons [Music] now let's watch clyde simmons he's the guy here now you get these three guys packed in here and simmons gets the big rush from the outside against william roberts see him come from the outside that's just a speed move just gets his hands up there and he gets sims just as he throws it that was a good move by clyde simmons and poor pass protection by william roberts it wasn't a very good effort [Music] jerome brown joe morris got four yards third down and six it'll bring up for a giant stadium in east rutherford new jersey and some are all john madden the eagles feed the giants 10-7 we're in the second quarter with just over five and a half minutes left to play [Applause] [Music] outside stacey robinson who has scored the only giant touchdown and now gets them a first down from sam yeah it looks like phil sims was you can effectively take the underneath or interception angle second and cannon george martin now playing in places of eric darcy and left defensive end for the play full-time not just against the going that it wouldn't have to be a pass pass pass game but the way the giant defense is playing today they're playing the run like they have in the past and anytime you run there they're not giving from the linebacker seems to be one of his real real strong points well you know and on that play he used what defensive lineman used they call it a a swim technique and a pass rush he used that same cunningham game then he takes it over and that's that's the way it is now i mean i think the giants had the upper hand most of the game i think the eagles have it right now that's eric allen behind the eagle medical staff down in the middle of that group of people their rookie cornerback who's done an outstanding job really all year long buddy ryan's eyes light up when he talks about eric allen he said he was a rookie he said every time we'd play someone they'd start to work on the rookie he said but he answered him he said he's been there and last week against the steelers he said he played down the eagles didn't take the time out we're headed for overtime i think bill parcells was trying to get the time run off the clock and then just get it all the way up where he didn't have to punt then he saw he did so he took a timeout but again i think the eagles right when hospital went down should have taken the time out because if nothing else they can go for a punt block and maybe get one windy day i think the giants won the toss and they they kicked off and the eagles had to go into the wind the giants beat him yeah the wind was about 40 miles an hour that day and buddy ryan was saying that he thought that he lost that game not playing it on the field but just the flip of the coin when they toss the coin he said i knew we'd had it happen to win today uh hasn't been that type of factor so i think in the overtime the team that wins the toss is going to take the ball randall cunningham straightening out the offensive formation i don't know why well he just wants his safety back behind him in case he fumbles but with one second and we're headed for overtime which will be just like starting a new game 17-17 and we head for overtime and those are the overtime rules they will toss the coin three-minute break before they come back out two timeouts per team in overtime a 15-minute period first score wins you know the interesting thing about that is everyone thinks that the team that wins the toss usually wins the game but that's only happened in about half the games in fact if you look at it the team receiving the overtime kickoff has won 50 percent of the game now the area that the randall cunningham says of all football that he enjoys the most is just that last two minutes when you're behind the scores tied he had a chance at halftime in that situation he had you're a defense you can't let them have any movement on that nose pack and still in that play when you're trying to run out of jim bird is one of the best look at that i mean those legs are starting to fall out that six gets farther from the four good set of guns on him third down cunningham the fire gets to midfield and more canard finally stopped him but a gain of 25 from cunningham to buyers great pass by cunningham hey gary reasons number 55 was right there with him and the ball goes right by he darn here got his left hand out there he was just a step behind the buyers got to step on reasons and cunningham put the ball the only place that buyers could get his reasons could that reason has looked like he dislocated something couldn't get his arm up you know what trying to trying to back on that side but you have to feel that guy coming he didn't see it but he felt him and stepped up certain guys had that you can't coach that can you no you can't you can't put mirrors on your helmets but you hope that they have it it's called quarterback instinct that would yes second and ten at the 41. [Applause] well he wasn't stepping forward he was stepping backwards so he didn't have everything on it that he wanted that's the book on cunningham it hadn't been statistically anything like the day he had in the first game against the giants when they beat him down in philadelphia i say two things are going to happen and the eagles are going to win cunningham is going to run with the ball or he's going to throw it to keith jackson jackson is in the slot for the right the giants have got a lot of people up there on the line of scrimmage cunningham is just going and telling every player what to do incomplete well that's what bill parcell said he'd like to have cunningham scrambling out of the pocket to his right hey the giants are going to take the all-out rush watch lawrence taylor is in the middle now george martin is going out there to get containment and they're rushing they have good good rush on cunningham and good coverage downfield that that's a combination of equals bad but the result was the interception then after that it was just three and punt four and punt three and punt and and that's where the game changed not that it was host edler's fault but the game he's one of those guys that you know knows football understands the whole game is always in the right place reads everything that was just good coverage by hope he was over in a double coverage but has such a great feel and a great quip arm he doesn't have to have his feet right all the time there he has his feet parallel he could still find haddocks and get the ball to him we worry about a quarterback sometimes he always has to has his feet in the right place he doesn't get him he doesn't get the completion but the eagles right now are in field goal range you saw just a moment ago more games to go after this one for both teams so it's getting more and more difficult to pick up ground lock running they only got two seconds now to get rid of it they get it off and whistle start
