years ago in 1988 [Music] [Music] your jets were featured in our first game ever the Year 1970 [Music] and 14 years later [Music] [Applause] [Music] all season on ABC [Music] Monday Night Football the Buffalo Bills versus the New York Jets donkey by dodge for performance quality safety and value welcome home America by ultra slim-fast a delicious healthy way to lose weight fast find Bud Light everything else is just a light and by McDonald's you know the one it's McDonald [Music] - Stadium the Meadowlands in New Jersey dance stadium the home to the football jazz as well as the New York Jets in an AFC matchup to meet the Buffalo Bills the bills are defending AFC East and division champions hello again everyone I'm Frank Gifford along with Al Michaels and Dan Dierdorf happy once again you're with us as we take our first look at the all-new New York Jets new head coach Bruce Kasich for the past few years the offensive guru subsidy Bengals dick Steinberg the new P VP and general manager 21 new faces on this roster and they have brand new uniforms it all translates to a 101 record in this young 1990 season that he Cleveland last week for their first victory meanwhile the Buffalo Bills nothing to know Jim Kelly is the quarterback along with Thurman Thomas their offensive machine and the backfield and they have a deep that's anchored by Bruce Smith he of the all-pro defensive end but one thing al'lat is also not new with these bells are the internal problem they erupted again last week in the humiliating loss 32 7 to Miami and they were known as the bickering bills a year ago it could be that maybe these problems we're keeping a good football team from becoming a great football team Frank this is such a perplexing football team they send five players to the Pro Bowl last year they have a quarterback with a twenty million dollar contract they have a running back who led the league in yards through scrimmage last year they have an all-pro wide receiver they have a defense that was considered to be the best in the league two years ago and they have a coach who's a Phi Beta Kappa that's a pretty good combination a good recipe so what's the problem well last year there was a lot of finger-pointing a lot of backstabbing a lot of back fighting and they certainly hoped they don't have the same thing occur in 1990 but after last week's loss to Miami and a great listless and uninspired performance who knows it's a big early season game for the bills if they win tonight last week as an aberration if they lose tonight it could be 1989 radoo Dan as far as the Jets are concerned they talked about it being a breath of fresh air around here and it certainly is do you think this team needed a breath of fresh air oh you better believe it al let's look at the New York Jets this is a team that in the AFC East hardly football strongest division the last three years has finished last next to last and last once again Wow as Bruce consulate Dunham well he's rejuvenated some of their veteran ballplayers people like Kenny O'Brien and freamon McNeil he's got 21 new rookies 21 new players as Frank told you led by rookie number one draft choice player Thomas out of Penn State and he's also done it by making their defense play better than the talent level they possess but he has also done one very important thing Bruce Koz late' has instilled a sense of confidence in the New York Jets you talked to these guys and they say no way are we finishing last and here they go now two teams with records of 1 and 1/2 old original American Football League teams in fact these two teams met in the first-ever game for each franchise at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan in 1916 before a crowd of 9,000 Pat lady who is the oldest player in the league at the age of 39 to kickoff for the Jets and he sends it down on the five-yard line where Donna Smith the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer returns it out to the 29 and so the Buffalo Bills who were third in the league in scoring and tops in the conference last year take over at that spot with Jim Kelly at the helm Kelly two years in the USFL and now in his fifth season with the Buffalo Bills and with him the key back is Thurman Thomas they got rid of Larry Ken Abreu last week Jeannie Mueller's the starting fullback mainly of blockers James Lofton and Andre reeds a wideout heat metzelaars a good blocking tight end and the offensive line Richards a longtime veteran Halla Pro Bowler last year Ballard the right tackle over 300 pounds and the bills begin from the shotgun with Kelly buying time pump faking and then throwing and finding finally Andre Reed who gets loose and picks up aid and he's tackled as a 37 it'll be second - now the Jets defense and they are guided by Pete Carroll who came over with ties with Kozlov from Cincinnati and Carroll from Minnesota stallworth mercero Byrd led the team in sacks last year they'd lock him in at down linemen spot Clifton and Kelly of the linebackers wardens on Neutrik reserve keep an eye on Tony Stargell the cornerback he's a rookie with hasty on the other side Washington and Eric McMillan are the safety second and two from the 37 Thurman Thomas exploitive feet hole it takes to back to the 50-yard line [Applause] mcfillin and washington the safeties converged on the tackle it's a gain of 13 and the game's initial first down belongs to the Buffalo Bills Thurman Thomas last year of course over 1200 yards rushing and he was just a offensive machine for the bills nearly 2,000 yards of total offense he was a big hold out this season he's just now rounding back into shape but we are going to see a lot of Thurman Thomas tonight right now you see him in a slot to the right out of the shotgun on first down from the 50 and Kelley going for Andre Reed and it's the way at the last moment by Michael maze Andre Reed had gotten behind him and Mays appeared to get a finger on it to deflect it well if he did it was a major league effort because Reed was behind him Kelly had her dead solid perfect and al mentioned a finger it might not have been more than @o in the merry last-minute looks look how Mays extends his left hand and the ball come down comes down hits him right on the back of the hand that was a stroke of luck on Michael Mae's part but he played it properly and he was in position and caught a break tackle saving managers second down and 10 from the 50-yard line the effect for a gain of four takes it to the 46 yard line lock them in and lock in on the tackle so at the 46 it'll be third down and six Jamie Mueller really the only fullback on the Buffalo roster Larry Ken Abreu is gone he was released this week after their game last [Music] to get his chance no longer sharing time with a big man Jennifer there five for the 45 they split walked into left for John Smith in the slide read at the top of the screen Delhi sends everybody into the pattern incomplete Smith looks for the flag and doesn't get any and it was Michael maze again providing the coverage Michael Mays here in the opening moments looking for Honolulu in the Provo a couple of T plays how he avoided the pass interference call there I don't know because he had to reach ride over for the deflection but he gets it and forces the bills into a fourth down and out of field goal range a once-in- present Ville Rick - who's been brought back to punt they drafted a rookie John nice but he didn't fare well last week so they activated shootin Wow fair catch is called for by yourself who runs into his old man Jojo self roaming for the fair catch in his old man John Galvin who's got terrific on special teams until this particular moment is out I'm now sort sir Townsel ran into his own fish give me a break I guess zone man ran into town sell the hardest hit of the game so far becomes John Galvin who was focusing on the man he was going to block Tasker he he he just kept his eyes riveted on the man he wanted to get Nikki what yeah one but he walked all over him that's patroller just decides I'll step on your throat while you're down on the ground Jojo Jojo tom selleck way to get this game started funny thing too about that play is the ball bounce backwards who had actually helped the Jets the town's L didn't make the fair campus from the 24-yard line here is Freeman McNeil big day last Sunday against Cleveland helping lead the Jets to the three-point win over the Browns ken O'Brien he and Tony Eason locked up in pre-season in a battle for the number one spot and O'Brien emerges he has with him Freeman McNeal and Brad Baxter in the backfield with tune and rob moore the rookie atmospheric whose mark Boyer the former cult is too tight man look at the line in a moment [Music] from the 30 first thanks to Virginia is part by two to a chorus of at the 36 yard line this is going to be a Keeney's to the Jets success or a lack thereof this season their offensive line the guys up front frizz well hates Sweeney the veteran Cadogan and Miller they're gonna have to do a job in protecting O'Brien and Jeff Chris well they're number 61 he draws the unlucky assignment a blocking number 78 there Bruce Smith that guy's had seven and a half sacks his last three games against the Jets no Brian needs a lot of help he was sacked 62 times the league high last year there's Framing McNeal on sweep picks up the first down to the 48 Raymond McNeil who was not protected on touchdown today the jet took a rest they gamble that nobody would pick them up along with his big salary at the age of 31 they were right they brought him back and he picks up the first down here and it was even more risky because Blair Thomas er number one draft pick was a holdout Johnny Hector had a bad knee injury so it was a gamble to paid off because he was superb last week against Cleveland also that quartet of linebackers outstanding and there is the Buffalo secondary Smith's a hard-hitter she'll show the full walk through in the 40-yard line and finally hogtied by Smith after again in Excel boy Cornelius Bennett just has a free shot into the back field and just slides right off watch Cornelius Bennett the lead block misses him completely and here he is and boy there's just no way to explain that that an all-pro player like Bennett is not supposed to miss a tackle like that on Baxter and glitched on running after that on the part of Baxter who came off the Jets development squad a year ago look at this tough to bring down as he barrels all the way inside the 40 you see that Frank Darryl Talley miss to tackle Bruce Smith missed a tackle I mean it was like a Pro Bowl group of players giving an exhibition on how not to tackle roll by O'Brien on first down and he the cash bounds at the 32 by Chris wrestle Muto dances the sideline and picks up about four one of the problems against Miami week ago in that dismal 32 seven loss was the fact they did not get any hitting they did not get good tackling and we have witnessed that already at a good effort there by Russell to pick up the four yards concentrating both those in bounds gain of 16 of four rather secondes [Music] [Applause] they're gonna have to hustle this one play clock is all the way down to five seconds the Jets had a little bit of confusion as to who was to come into the game Alton was late in getting to the huddle and O'Brien has to stand a timeout nine eleven to go in a scoreless first quarter at Giants Stadium [Music] giant stadium about eight miles from midtown Manhattan is the blimp flies and it's packed tonight for usual Goodyear blimp spirit of Akron looking down a crowd of over 75,000 the Jets after the timeout have a second and six from the 32 yard line toss to Hector and he takes it to the 30 you stop there by Jeff Wright and that sets up a third and four well I don't know if there's someone in the Buffalo defense that's reading the signals coming in did you see the whole Bills defensive line over ship to the side of that toss there's a play that had no chance whatsoever by the way you see Cornelius Bennett and you do number 97 and wondering what's different it's the number used to wear 55 but he went back this year to wearing his old college number when Scot ran a sec who wore 97 left and was picked up by the Colts look at Brian is able to escape the corner quick and go [Applause] bounce in the end zone is no signal for the touchdown but there flagged for interference as pervy Jackson on the corner blitz that time couldn't get to O'Brien Williams was covering on the play with Mathis in the endzone and it was hardly much of a move that time by ken O'Brien all he did was just step up about two feet and Kirby Jackson to sail right over it so extremely early in this ballgame we have seen miss tackled by Buffalo and there is just interfering James William Williams a number one draft pick and it was fifth caution on the part of Memphis to stay in his route because O'Brien spun out of a big pack how he got away from being sacked it's hard to tell they are calling it a touchdown for the moment to take a look at ball bounces that hit the ground they're gonna review that they have for the moment called at a touchdown that did the dishes to the overturned gallop or is the replay official it's going to hit the ground here in a second will they overturn bandar will it is the interference will stand and it'll be a first down for the Jets at the one-yard line but that is not a touchdown the bills will get a consolation prize here in a second they'll take six point I'll support but it's going to be first and goal for the jacks the one thing that is indisputable is the interference call against James William Levy that first of all it's not subject to replay and that is blatant interference here comes the overturn we have a reversal [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and Jamie Williams II rookie out of Fresno State replay box so it'll be first down and goal ago at the one watch O'Brien now there is a safety blitz coming he's not one of the most abs of quarterbacks you're ever going to see there is Jackson and O'Brien got lost in there and any James Williams who was covering Mathis panic gave up for a moment and that was all it took for masters to get behind him first and goal with Makino taking the charge gets a nice block from Baxter but get into the end zone he is staffed by Carlton Bailey number 54 the linebacker who staves off the touchdown for the woman second and goal the prima McNeil is 31 years old last week came back running like he was 5 years ago part of it of course attributable according to Bruce Tom's with his book the fact he's been working out all year long lifting weights staying here in New York and working out everyday and this time he that was just a good collision they're sensational play by Bailey that's the book on how to play it from the inside linebacker who really earned it starting down because of the holdout obscene Tomlin is here back in the goal and pulling [Applause] Fred Baxter who kept his job when they traded Roger Vic to Philadelphia and he moved in as their number one fullback it's 75 yard drive now the Jets have had an 80-yard Drive in their opening game now they've had a 90 yard drive gotta make a coach happy they like those long drives and that's something the Jets didn't do very much of last year very few sustained ladies extra point is good the Jets meanwhile had not scored a touchdown against the bills since their first meeting in 1988 they had gone three full games and parts of two others without getting into the endzone and take the lead halfway through the first quarter that's against penthouse suite co-op board would let you guys in there the Empire State Building eight miles distant Jets kicking off lay he puts it in the air filled it at the two yard line by Don Smith and a plan B pickup from Tampa Bay brings it out to the 24 yard line 736 remaining in the first quarter and the New York Jets moving down the field 75 yards eight plays and a tick under five minutes well now we'll find out some interesting things about the Buffalo Bills questions always linger after you get whitewashed like they got pasted last week by Miami we have to see now they're facing a little adversity already down 7 nothing here little bear is look in the part of the Jets defense first down they go to the tight end and that's Keith McKellar who played mainly basketball in college and only one year of football and sit up for a first down after the 35 yard line an 11-yard gain and the bills going out of huddle [Applause] Kelly from the gun under pressure did little ray but in the grand this is Matt attacks the play is over it's whistled dead in the grasp and control of Dennis Byrd who led the Jets in sacks last year is seven yeah this is coming back there goes bird boy must be the green jersey Mark Gastineau wherever you are Dennis Byrd Yertle say has seven sacks a year ago in a in an era where it's the outside linebackers that seem to be the really heavy duty pass rushers that so that's a good number for a defensive lineman especially a defensive tackle it's second and 17 finally the open man walked in he has the first down and goes out of bounds at the 47 yard line James walked him a long time Green Bay Thames 50 years with the Raiders and now in his second citizen with about Tony Sargent must have been reading his press guide because he gave him about 15 yards with lobster look it look it James Lofton at the end of this we can show too because of the hurry up we got to see it we'll get to it first in San it's caught by Thomas over the middle he's at the jet 47 for a gain of five and that's the Thurman Thomas his first ever attached here's a read way that Dick Clark should do got a great beat easy to dance to but the Larry start was James Lofton he had he had the presence of mind there to know though that he had the first down and don't give it up he's he started to go back behind the point where he had picked up the first down I was at a 600 14th career reception I'd have to take off my shoes to make sure sergeant playing hurt there at the defensive corner for the Jets 12 min on defense first time good way to do it well that's the hurry-up offense designed to do just that yeah but normally you think it'd be this guy Bruce consulate that would be putting an offense on the field Allah Sam Weiss in the Bengals in a hurry up Steve now it's Buffalo that's doing it first half of the 47 yard line and Mueller fights forward to the 42 remember it was first and five so he is close to a [Applause] another first down but it will be second and inches at the 42 yard line and Mueller picks up the inches in about seven yards more as he moves forward to the 35 yard line as the Bills exploit the soft center of the defense and notice how they're doing this they still have they only have three wide receivers in the game the man all the way to the bottom of this screen is Thurman Thomas playing wide receiver now from the gun it's pitched there's a flag way downfield at the 12 yard line away from the play whilst the fingertips of Reid and we'll get the call from Tom Dooley we have a delay foul 12 minimization first time [Applause] Bill's had success with this against Miami this is working very well against the Jets and I agree with you Dan this is Bruce Koz was a bit of his intention with the Cincinnati Bengals and now his defense is getting caught five-yard penalty puts it at the 29 at his first and five [Applause] Kelly in question about that well often interfered with by Tony Stark oh and he just grabbed Lofton and held him Robson we've had a great speed in his early days and he hasn't lost all that much of it at the age of 34 that [Music] way Tony starts on the roof in Tennessee State it's 81 81 is what he's saying there and Zoey they're saying that he pushed off the starter with his left hand I don't know about that he was at full stride or add that that's a very tough call and I think Marv levy is expressing those sentiments right now to the head linesman well again another look I think core is the yards in a little over 10 minutes first and 25 little football fantasy acceptance is a little flag however Jeff raagam in intercepts and is out of bounds at the 32 but there's a flag back down at the jet 42 yard well that's a screenplay and you've got to cut the defensive end and it didn't happen on that sway left tackle will Wolford tries to cut lock him in and doesn't get into the ground bills are convinced it's against the jet and it is boy it looks like defensive holding rock having a former linebacker show the good hands on that way so great athletic ability [Music] well a busy night so far for referee Tom Dooley and for Jeff wagaman losses in ing this game should be subtitled zebras run wild at this point go mod is flagged for the defensive hold and the Jets have a touchdown on the board but they have made their share of mistakes so far at the 44-yard line it had been first in 25 so that's a huge penalty not only 10 yards for the first cycle 1 yard line a 43 yard pickup pumped out by Eric McMillan Kelly ones the touchdown and worst it's going to be first and goal well that was more than a bump out by Eric McMillan what a shot by Eric with millon on Keith Mackellar but the story of this play where is the jet secondary McKellar wide open is it need to be the strong safety brand Washington and as they were covering him with the linebacker in what are the other fouled up the defense Mackellar was wide open it's where the ball is and the ball was in his left hand and they say he didn't get in first and goal and Davis and he's in for the touchdown just barely but across the goal line and buffalo pulls to within a point you know guys that's about as bad a series as a defensive team can have two penalties for 12 men on the field one defensive hold that negates an interception and then a totally blown coverage on tight end Keith mckellar that allows you to get the ball down to the six-inch line a a series to forget if you play on the New York jet defensive thing watch Davis now stop short of the line of scrimmage in them with a little second effort gets the ball across the plane of the goal line did I leave did I leave anything out covered it they did it all do outside of that it was terrific Scott Norwood the extra point is good and so the bills marched down the field Davis on his first carry of the night goes in for the touchdown and we're tied at 7 McKellar setting it up with his 43 yard reception 356 to go in the quarter for me it's the perfect they had theories for the Jets defenses the bills marched down the field Jets self-destructing defensively and Buffalo able to tie the game keep Carol going over things with hasty and McMillan by the way the Jets put you at that no huddle op this I think we're gonna see a lot more that Jon Niese the rookie who was drafted to be the punter and also the kickoff he's one of three kickers the bills are carrying at the moment and the rookie from Arizona sends it down at the 7 yard line where massive runs it all the way back to the 30 he takes a hard hit there from butch roll take a look at the numbers on the scoring drive as the bills answer the Jets with a 76-yard more in seven plays and the jesh will take over at the 30-yard line and I lost a nanny they huddle along the sideline and then come out after calling the first play on the sideline they better hurry it up and they go right to the line of scrimmage they will not huddle but you're right they better giddyup they're down to five seconds play clock to two to one and they just do get it off this Raymond McNeil stopped at the line of scrimmage where Johnny Hector excuse me Hector that was a lot of running on a lot of tension for what about a yard or less or less second down call it nine a reminder we'll be in Seattle a week from tonight the Bengals are unbeaten coming off their thrashing of the New England Patriots yesterday against the Seahawks who went into overtime before falling to Denver second and nine they lined Jojo Townsell up in the backfield sector emotionally different look at O'Bryant roll it is incomplete is a 455 mark Kelso was there and so is counsel Jojo is not liking the way this game starts first his own man and now mark Kelso and Jojo town self has every reason to be down on the ground what a vicious shot mark Kelso the most unlikely Buffalo Bill out there to put that shat on Townsel defenseless is Jojo Townsell concentrating on the ball give him a great deal of credit he knew he was going to get hit and he never takes his eyes off the football boy and Markel so right up in his face so they still work on Townsel Rob more their rookie wide receiver editor accused deemed coming in as well so the Jets a little sin as far as the wide receivers are concerned there is more was the number one pick of the Supplemental Draft with I think Tom sells ready to get up on his feet we look at that and rate you to speed we've slowed it down for you and it happened so rapidly you really just cannot believe the timing first of all I'm part of Kelso on that Jojo Council is even going to get up he does appear to be alright now the doctor has left the field all right Jojo Nicholas has the team position with the Jets and he has gone to the sideline so apparently still Jose okay I admire the way that he did not take his eye off the ball dr. Nicholas who has been around for many many years with these Jets yo name is he a lot of zippers in Joe's legs third down and nine for the Jets now is play resumed from the 31 302 to go first quarter game tied 7-7 under pressure but escaped and his part no he's out of bounds at the 49 Leonard Smith covering who thinks he was in but the official round here to say no sir what he's saying is that he didn't have possession of the football the official was ruling that on his way out of bounds al to with juggling the ball I don't think enter Brian realized he was going to get out of this because if it has if this tune was so wide open standing there all alone he hung it up and how does he have possession of the ball certainly appears that he does they did he had both feet down you're looking at two different things the official is well that looks like a catch to me didn't it I mean he juggled the ball initially but then he regains control of the ball and it looks like his feet are in let's watch the official was ruling then he was out of bounds because he'll give you that up-and-down chopping motion if he said he didn't have possession and he never gave that so the initial call by the official was for being out of bounds when he caught it well that that certainly looked like a catch you can see the umpire communicating with the replay booth and Calliphora but he has the ball and both feet are in bounds I mean you have to see evidence to clearly overrule the call on the field because the call on the field was no catch in my opinion I think we saw that evidence I would say that that's the catch end new rule this year two minute limit for the replay official to render judgment here's another look now certainly looks like he has possession no question about the two feet being inbounds well I don't know they're I think that looked at craig jan off and did i think that's well i you really think it looked like he bobbled the ball a little bit he didn't have it into the chest well it looked like a catch to me me too I never have to be totally conclusive there's Leonard Smith the extremely talented strong safety of the bills now they want here you want to know where they want to spot the ball now I think they're going to ask the side judge if at what point he had possession well that's a bad sign sigh judges being lucky former where's our to military ten player himself this has been going on for a while but he said I forgot this has been we have to be approaching the two minutes limit [Music] after further review the play will stand this call did not see enough evidence to overturn it well everyone's entitled to an opinion looks like a catch to me Noel I would agree GoPro comp now she's at the 37 intakes big jet bounced 20 yard roll out of bounds at the 17 yard line and again one of those inartistic punts that looks terrific on the statute 32 yards in the air and then a 20-yard bounce and it's 52 that to me is still the problem of the replay we look at for two and a half minutes in there two minutes two and a half after the play was over and we get nothing out of it conclusive whether or not he bobble it they just couldn't determine first insane Buffalo at the 72-42 to go opening quarter Thomas to the 50 Thomas to the 40 Thomas getting blockiness Thomas takes it down the 22 yard line where Michael Mae's finally runs him down in Elle Edwards his receiver added about 25 yards to that run good hustle by the rookie a lad was out in front of Thurman Thomas I think Thomas is back again a long time hold out legs a little weak in the last couple of games only 23 yards against Miami distance big time running right here from a young running back out of Oklahoma State we gained over 1200 yards a year ago and he's looking to duplicate that year again 60 I picked up longest of his career give him a breather and Don Smith is the tailback and this set takes it to the 20-yard line for a gain of four we talked about the matchup between the defensive line of Buffalo against the offensive line of the Jets well this is another good matchup when the Bills have the ball because this is an undersized defensive line of the New York Jets they only go to 55 to 72 73 and 260 across the front that says smaller defensive line as therein as there isn't a league and can they hold their ground second and seven little option toss back to Thomas inside the 10 and the first down as he gets to the 6 yard line and the bills really mixing it up offensively tonight showing the Jets every look coming up on the shotgun and all kinds of different sets a little toss back here to Thomas and their 1st and goal at the 6 what a pretty tough on a young defense and the defense is using all different terminology and to try and change off the defense they have to think it takes just a peep to do it in the bills are doing what a better team should do that is giving a lot of looks showing a lot of different things in making a young decent react to their reaction minutes ago on the quarter earth can go Jewish for Kenneth Jets led by Jeff Lachman last year's the top draft Croatia was picked there's a linebacker now they turned him into a down lineman as they've gone to a 4-3 the Jets over the last two seasons the opponents have scored a touchdown on consecutive first and goal situations including one tonight that's not a very desirable statistic [Applause] on Townsville mild concussion might return second and goal Rasmussen ballsack to the fort [Music] lager men who played that outside linebacker in the Jets three-four defense inside the home even though he's not all that big lining up the defensive and he's so quick 255 pounds and again in the bills backfield and the bills will let the clock run down the final results we're very happy with it you know the NFL became the number one spectator sport when our games were under three hours we had players like Joe Namath oj simpson and others and so we try to get it back down to about three hours and we think we're doing that without losing many plays the big thing is the close games the big plays and the big players it was a little fine-tuning at the very beginning of the season just before the start of the season as affecting the kickoff well you were you happy with that or might you change some others no I don't think we'll change you know the main thing as I say is how many passes are there in a game that produces a long game generally how many runs do you have in a game it produces a shorter game we saw that yesterday with the Miami game here against the Giants it was three to two hours and 46 minutes we think that our change is affected it by about five or six minutes maximum well I know this isn't the most exciting subject for the fans but I know it's one of your top priorities how close is the league right now to a collective bargaining agreement with the players something you haven't had for three years well I don't think we've made any progress in the year that I've been Commissioner I think we've done a lot of things we have extended our television coverage we've booth made some progress on expansion we've had a great pre-season overseas in Berlin London and Tokyo but on collective-bargaining I think we're a dead center it's like a game being played for 60 minutes in a scoreless tie frankly I think you'd like to get it done but the question I have is the league has prospered basically without a collective bargaining agreement outside of the fear of let's say congressional intervention is there enough incentive for the majority of owners to want to get a collective bargaining deal done well that's a good question you know some of the owners think we should have an agreement and some of the players think so other people have different views on both the owner and player side and we've been trying to get a consensus and see if something can be done because at bottom I think we're better for partners rather than adversaries Paul we've got about 45 seconds left I know one of your big goals as expansion and realignment do you think there's a mood among the owners so that they'd like to see both happen I think there is we've had two good meetings of our expansion committee we've talked about all the cities you know the fresh markets in America there are a number of those out there plus the older cities that have had teams and lost them in the recent decade and I think there's a lot of support for expansion at the right time we're targeting 1993 and hopefully we can stay on target would you see realignment at the same time I think we could I think there's strong interest around the league and some more regional rivalries Dallas Houston Tampa Miami and things like that so if we can work out some of the details I think we'll be there alright commissioner we'd like to continue this interview but unfortunately you and the competition committee of short enough to half time so we
