regular season telecast of monday night football the vince lombardi trophy emblematic and professional football supremacy and like the man for whom it's named it calls for excellence each year every team dreams of possessing it but at years and only one can right now that super bowl trophy is in the hands of the washington redskins and williams and with that performance mvp quarterback doug williams secured the starting position this year but the champions did not stand pat in their quest to repeat george rogers was released in favor of timmy smith the signing of all pro-free agent wilbur marshall redefined the price of talent and the value of defense and dexter manly star pass rusher returns tonight after a 30-day drug suspension pro bowler charles mann knows the skin's dilemma for the redskins to repeat we have to be able to deal with the outside circumstances and situations that come up better than any other team in the national football league and we've been doing that a lot in the 80s and the newest change took place at 1 00 a.m today as quarterback jay schroeder no longer a will now call los angeles his home trade-in to the raiders for tackle jim lachey and other considerations two years ago the giants dreams came true their future seemed bright in their quarterback phil simms shined as none had before in a super bowl coach bill parcells and his team were on top of the football world but they learned last year how quick a dream can become a nightmare they were crushed [Music] they were burned they were beaten in every way now as bill parcells enters this season he hopes to recapture the glory of two seasons ago but there are problems at linebacker all pro carl banks the last of three holdouts to return is not yet in top form and of course the great lawrence taylor will not be in action tonight his drug suspension clouding the giants efforts for a comeback it's a great showdown with compelling questions many will be answered [Music] tonight [Applause] [Music] ah [Music] so [Music] welcome to the meadowlands in new jersey just a few miles across the hudson ritter to the magical lights of manhattan in the city of new york giant stadium where there are so many stories to be told tonight one of them most certainly that of offensive tackle carl nelson for the giants number 63 hodgkin's disease a year ago he missed the entire season he has battled back he has also had shoulder surgery the giant fans and there are many of they sell this stadium out every game they have followed the progress and he will start tonight he's one of the favorites he will be the fourth giant that will be introduced let's go down to the field introducing the giants offense at center number [Applause] damian johnson nelson it's a wonderfully human story that is being saluted by this sellout crowd from giants stadium the story of carl nelson and his return this abc sports exclusive is brought to you by nissan cars and trucks built for the most important race of all the human race and by budweiser proud sponsor of the 1988 u.s olympic team this bud's for you by a t the right choice and by reeboks reeboks let you be you hello again everyone well it's electrified here at giant stadium tonight as the giants and the redskins two longtime rivals in the nfl and favorites to win this division the nfc east will kick off their regular season tonight the redskins of course super bowl winners last year over denver the giants super bowl winners over denver the year before that but the giants fell to a poor record last year now they are trying to battle back so many troubles for both these ball clubs coming into tonight's game and so many dramatic stories that will unfold but first of all now we have to talk about the troubles for the giants and that of course they're going to miss florence taylor there's absolutely no question about that well they're going to miss taylor he's an impact player probably the best defensive player in the league leonard marshall is also hurting we don't know how much he'll play tonight carl banks as you mentioned is a late signee they're in a little bit of trouble on defense now last year the giants finished last but you get a big present from the national football league when you finish last the next year you play a very soft schedule and the giants have a top-heavy schedule they have the 49ers next week they have washington twice in the first five weeks if they can come out of let's say the first six games three and three i think they're a lock for the playoffs because in their last 11 games they play only one team that finished above 500 last year that would be new orleans and they played detroit twice and atlanta so if the giants win tonight they're a viable super bowl contender if they lose it's really not that much of a problem as long as they look half decent what about the redskins and what about their chances of repeating but more importantly dan dier what about this deal they made earlier this morning sending jay schrader to the raiders how do you assess that well first of all al as you know it's a deal that the redskins really had no choice but to make schroeder really painted them into a corner with his attitude the the thing of it with the redskins is it's kind of a calculated risk because they have an unproven backup quarterback in mark ripon and here's a guy that if he's called upon to play has never even thrown a pass in the national football league when we think of the starter doug williams it's now his football team we think of the magnificent super bowl but keep in mind a statistic kind of a startling statistic and that is this williams has only ever started two regular season games for the washington redskins and the skins unbelievably lost both of those games last season across the board a solid football team they're two-point underdogs tonight and for the life of me i can't figure out why well part of it has to be home field that's worth a couple of points another part is that the new york teams normally get some sort of advantage in the betting line and that could be the reason but i agree with you it would appear that the redskins would have more manpower especially in light of the absence of taylor doug williams waiting on the bench as the washington redskins will kick off and the rookie chip lol miller who was their top draft choice they didn't have a first round selection they picked him up from minnesota in the second round he'll kick off lee roose on 22 and mark ingram 82 her back deep and the kick comes down to the six yard line to russon straight up the middle and dropped at the 27 yard line by terry orr number 87. phil sims one of the few giants who did have a good year last year battled his way through injuries and going back to pasadena in super bowl 21 that record-setting performance 22 out of 25. morris is the running back manuel and ingram get the starts as the wide outs and two tight ends moait and bavaro who was a late signee and the first carry is joe morris for next to nothing as he tries to move through the middle charles mann number 71 gets credit for the tackle the giants offensive line and this is going to be a key not only tonight but through the season roberts art oats in the middle godfrey's gone damien johnson is now the right guard and of course the re-emergence now carl nelson back in the lineup after the absence of a year second and nine from the 28-yard line moat in motion morris tries to turn the corner and can't because alvin walton comes up from the strong safety spot to dump him near the line of scrimmage it'll be third down and nine now the defense man butts grant and marcus cook at right in but we will see dexter manly the big story amongst the linebackers they signed wilbur marshall number 58 6 million over five years wilburn and greene are the corners walton and bowles are the safeties third and ten baker and turner are in with four wide receivers in this set for the giants sims from the shotgun has to step up and he'll keep it and he gets only to the 33-yard line he is stopped there by marcus cook and washington has held the giants on their first series and what a job they did holding the giants four wide receivers there was a safety blitz on by the redskins automatically the redskins secondary was in man-for-man coverage they handled it sims had nowhere to go and could not pick up the first down good defense dan but i think al really touched on it when he mentioned the giant offensive line if they're not able to give phil sims time tonight and they're kind of a makeshift group right now haven't had a great deal of time together i think the giants will be hard-pressed to move the ball effectively john landetta who signed late after a contract dispute has been bothered by a bad back has the punt fielded at the 30 and run back by mike oliphant and he's a story we'll get into later on back to the 37-yard line mark collins makes the tackle 37-yard kick seven-yard run back and doug williams we talked about marshall's contract williams has a new one as well for three years his numbers and that spectacular performance most of that yardage of course came in that second quarter along with all of the touchdown passes timmy smith who set a record in the super bowl with 204 yards monk and clark warren and mcewen are the tight ends and if you don't follow the skins that closely didier is gone clint didier waved last week mcewan takes his spot from the 37th clark and monk are both strict to the right on first down and the skins send it to clark incomplete as they go to the air on the first play second down and 10. the offensive line for washington and of course lashay will join them it's already a very strong unit and dan will discuss how lachey figures to fit into that as we move along jacoby the huge one number 66 at 6-7 305. second down and 10 kelvin bryant is in for washington he appears normally in third down situations and in passing situations here at second and long they send him into the pattern williams going deep for clark and clark makes the catch for a first down at the 25-yard line he ran past perry williams and gary clark who has had brilliant games in this stadium in the past is off to another flying story that was an absolutely perfectly thrown ball pressure again against williams it was eric howard the nose tackle but look it's beautifully thrown now when you're covering man for man that's not bad position on the part of perry williams well i agree it's not bad coverage by williams but what a marvelous throw by williams top left to your screen look at howard come in williams throws that off of his heels and is able to get it 40 yards downfield in the air i think that's a magnificent start of a ball game by doug williams from the 25-yard line their first running play good hole for smith and he exploits it gets down to the 17-yard line stopped there by the safety kenny hill defensively now for the giants in this revamped defense these were the starters and they'll move around up there you see bert starting in the middle we'll see a lot of eric howard and washington starting and end for marshall banks is in there right now that's the way they started and there is the secondary good corners and a couple of banged up safeties in hill and canard second and two from the 17. and it's andy heading for lawrence taylor timmy smith a first down and for the team but he fumbles out of bounds so washington still has possession at the 10-yard line and smith picking up right where he left off in the super bowl and it did not take long for bill parcells to get banks into the lineup well the key here i believe is that perry williams the cornerback who's got contained really sells himself too much to the inside you see him on the ground already timmy smith makes that read and bounces it to the outside there's no contain and until kenny hill is able to come over and make the play that's bad position for the football luckily for smith it bounces out of bounds just outside the 10 it's first anton they can get a first down without a touchdown and straight through the middle timmy smith and again it's interesting to know it was smith he was heard in college in his junior year played in only one of his last seven games as a junior and only one game as a senior played very sparingly behind rogers last year and then they put him into the lineup in the playoffs and he took off so dan mentioning before some questions about doug williams and how he'll perform over the course of the season same thing in regard to smith i think good point now they both are in the same category although doug williams has far more nfl experience with all the years he played with tampa bay second and eight that's clark in motion everybody goes out into the pattern williams incomplete intended for clark he was well covered and john washington finally got through to knock down williams giants are going to need that with leonard marshall probably not seeing action tonight with that full groin muscle over the right defensive end lawrence taylor and leonard marshall are the two best pass rushers the giants had taylor obviously gone hayden is for in there for him and there is leonard marshall he pulled the groin in last week's game against the cleveland browns and he's available to play tonight but he's really only about 75 percent the good news is that eric howard was in on williams earlier and also john washington a moment ago so they are getting a pass run third and eight with clock to the left and monk to the right mcewen goes in motion williams on a short roll looking back the other way for gary clark and no he's out of bounds he was out of the end zone as he'd gotten behind perry williams and for gary clark it's his third career game in the stadium in each of his prior two he caught 11 passes and again a throw by doug williams running away from the play and then back on his heels all the way across the field in perfect position doug williams is having to make some throws tonight from awkward positions and as you can see the first foot clearly out of bounds but doug williams no one can ever contest the quality of his throwing arm and again good position by perry williams whom they seem to be attacking here in the early going now chip low miller is the eighth man to kick a field goal for washington in their last 27 games over two and a half years and the rookie is successful from 26 yards in his nfl debut so the second round choice from minnesota makes the early score the redskins three and the giants nothing [Music] opening night at the meadowlands had a little bit of rain yesterday and threatening skies this afternoon but it's cleared out it's a beautiful night 1006 to play in the first period rusan and ingram are back deep low miller kicking off and this one taken at the six yard line and fumbled there by ruson and he is met right away as steve gage number 48 a backup safety and special teams performer makes the stop and pins the giants deep three nothing washington and the giants last year losing their opening game so they became one of the five of the last seven super bowl champions to lose the opening game the next year and more importantly four of the last eight super bowl champions haven't even reached the playoffs parody extreme the giants again with two tight ends in there moad in motion and finn slings it to moad who had a terrific pre-season he gets to the 17 and here's a guy who could figure very prominently in tonight's game in many different ways moad of course will be in there as an h-back at times or an f-back as they like to call him well they're going to tie it the guy on the offensive line who has his hands full tonight carl nelson playing against one of the premier players in the league charles mann and that time karl nelson over committed to the outside and if it wasn't a quick pass a quick release by phil sims that would have been a sack keep in mind with nelson his problem right now isn't his cancer it's dealing with an injured right shoulder that's going to be his toughest battle getting back to where he was morris goes next to nowhere on second down as he reaches the 18-yard line it will be third down and still sex coleman and ulkowicz injured right shoulders his left shoulder that's that's banged up and interesting too which is right the way charles mann went to that inside move took the inside move and that's the problem the only problem really that has trouble with carl nelson is somebody moving to the inside and having to use that left side it's just not as strong as it should be from that january 5th operation dexter manley is in the game now for washington he's number 72 and george adams is the giants third down back he stands next to sims in the shotgun third and six fresher is on and sims has to get rid of it and that's grounding as the flag goes down marcus cook teams flying through and sims instead of eating it trying to throw it away and no sir says dick jorgensen well the giants blow it on their offensive line because marcus cook number 74 isn't even touched marcus cook is to the right side here of carl nelson for some reason he picks up the blitzing linebacker and cook is all alone but then coming off late charles mann there goes sims to the ground they bring out landeta and as they mark it off bringing up the fourth down the landetta has got to be wearing parcels with that poor first kick of this he has had a bad back ever since he reported late and he could be in a lot of trouble that was a really poor kick that first one jorgensen still discussing it now the call the call is intentional grounding number 11 offense 10 yards and loss of down it's fourth down keep in mind the rule on the intentional grounding you can even have a receiver somewhere in the area but if your intent is to avoid a sack and in the referee's decision and his judgment by seeing charles mann in his face phil sims just threw the ball into the ground avoided the sack and thus the flag you've got a good look right there at marcus cook number 74 who was untouched and it's no fun being phil sims when defensive ends come in without being blocked they found that up just a little bit that is an automatic penalty the down you also lose it down on it so they have been marked off and now they have to kick from their end zone landeta whose first kick was only 37 6 under last year's average and this one is not a thing of beauty either as it bounds out of bounds at the 37-yard line a tour kick and a flag is down back at the 10-yard line oh and the giants better hope this is against washington because some kind of field position for the skins here two poor punts by landetta washington already leading three-nothing and the call is against uh if that's before the kick that'll be an automatic first down if it's before the kick that's what they're going to try to determine now when was the hole holding number 29 receivers while the ball was in the air 10-yard penalty first down that's the difference if the ball has already been kicked the receiving team gets to keep the ball three-nothing with 8-25 left in the first quarter in 1962 when the giants met the redskins at yankee stadium why a tittle went back to pass hit none other then number 16 the gifter himself it was tittle's sixth touchdown pass of the day and he'd go on to throw a seventh to joe walton tying an nfl record seven touchdown passes in one game for y a tittle [Music] and back live on first down timmy smith for the redskins as they start from near midfield and his run taking the ball down to the 26 line as the redskins are moving again and we can't let that last flashback go frank without asking you if there was a mix-up in the secondary on that touchdown pass i'm just happy that thing was in color keep dragging on my black and whites but dan out there there they're moving the ball on the ground a lot better than i think the giants anticipated that would be able to do the jazz are not i'm trying to figure out their pass rush but they're getting beat on the ground i'm trying to figure out if that's the giants defense or if that's the denver bronco defense because the last regular season game we did was a super bowl and they're looking much like the same team 21-yard gain for smith on the end around oh look has blocking inside the 20 and tripped up at the 15-yard line and he has a first down so the skins are knocking on the door again mark collins makes the tackle with eight minutes to play in the quarter art monk really didn't get as many yards as he wanted here watch him right here just the old simple play right through the backfield and around the corner he makes the decision here to come back to the inside rather than maybe test the sidelines sure looked like a lot of open territory the handoff there from williams and it really looks like clear sailing with donny warren out front but rather to take the sidelines i think monk made a mistake and came back to the middle of the field he used to be a running back in syracuse he might have scored if he stays on the sideline three wide receivers in now including sanders they give it to timmy smith and the giants finally wrap him up washington makes the initial hit gennard coming up from the secondary as well [Applause] joe gibbs hopeful of winning a super bowl championship for the third time in his illustrious career banksy strong side linebacker they held him out for the opening play and then they instantly bring the pro bowler who's only had about four days work after that long hold out but you also see pepper johnson in on that stop this is what parcells is counting on from the middle of that line he probably will be the one who inherits offensively that job of harry carson's good against the run pepper johnson second and ten mcewing goes in motion they have three wide receivers in there williams stumbles as he goes back throws caught at the eighth by craig mcewan he was a replacement player last year he was in camp cut during the strike he came back then they kept them and he's the man taking clint didier's spot pepper johnson makes the tackle along with carl banks he really earned that job in the replacement game that we did now when you were doing the world series he had seven receptions that night against the dallas cowboys and i think five of them were on third down the redskins just feel the mckeown a little more versatile than clint did here and a little more speed once he's got the ball and that's what really prompted the decision to let didier go and go with him on third and three they send clark in motion and bring him back the other way williams throwing incomplete nearly picked off out of brian's hands and in and out of canard's hands as well well kelvin bryant was really wide open on that play and doug threw the ball a little bit too far back to the inside of the field kelvin really did a heck of a job just getting his hands on the football let's see if we can pick it up here the ball is going to be too much back to the inside brian's going to have to dive for it you can see the effort he made and right through his hands and terry canard almost got a lucky interception you saw hitton number 54 perhaps forcing that errant pass by williams but in any event the giants are getting off chief once again this is kind of redskins first quarter and if they can get out of this with just six points they're going to be fortunate 25 yard field goal attempt by lowe miller is good out of mcewen's hole so the redskins settle for three more 5 57 to play in the first quarter six nothing redskins one giant problem last year their special teams play not only last year but look at that go back to 1972 the last time the giants returned to kickoff for a touchdown it's their third run back of the night and this one like the prior two comes to the six yard line busan really takes a belt from kurt gouveia who loves to hit people number 54. i think of the redskins and the way they play special teams i have to go back to george allen who really started that tradition of special teams play in washington and you think of some of the great guys over the years that have covered kickoffs but watch this hit on busan gouveia gets around the blocker and boy that's nothing fancy that's just a helmet in the chest and the momentum just takes busan right over backwards if we could bring you the natural sound of that [Applause] govaila well noted for hits like that sends to the air gets pressured throws on the run and it's caught out at the 40-yard line by lionel manuel so the giants have a first down at the 40 as sims improvises steps up and finds his man well he had to duck underneath charles mann again watch from the right side of your screen carl nelson trying to work man up field but he collapses a pocket and butts wasn't able to keep sims from getting to the outside and lionel manuel kept it alive however for sam's he saw his quarterback was in trouble kept sprinting he kept giving him the angle and they get the completion in the first down good heads up play by manuel and that time barry wilburn on the tackle almost took lionel's helmet off by grabbing a hold of the face mask on the bottom it was inadvertent but nonetheless he had a hold of manuals face mask sims now with a clock ticking down that 45 second clock is down to five as he resets the alignment it's down to two as they get to play off and morris over the left side gets out to the 44-yard line picking up about four and wilbur marshall number 58 gets credit for his first tackle as a first dividend on that six million dollar contract well a guy who early in the preseason was a little hesitant on the field just because he was still learning a new system had his best game of the preseason last week in their game against atlanta and is there this is one of the finest impact players in the national football league wilbur martin mullet lined up that time in the backfield as the blocking back and makes the catch and gets to the 46-yard line so a man who is the second tight end to bavaro and a man who'll be used as the h-back or the f-back or what have you is the blocking back there and the fast receiver talk about the comeback of carl nelson from hodgkin's disease moat two years ago had complete reconstruction of his knee he came back missed that entire season then last year he struggled and finally started to get it back towards the end of the season and he was a top receiver during the preseason and they liked heading in there a lot of the times this year with bavaro and that's how they've opened tonight third and fourth sims pressured by man steps away losses with bovaro and bovaro is stopped at the 46-yard line by monty coleman for no gain and the giants will have to kick and there's a good look at phil sims imploring his offensive line to give him a little time this is a big time catch frank it is but sims has not been comfortable in that pocket yet he's had to either step up he's had to roll out he's had to fly between the redskins they're going to have to do something or they're going to have to go to just the quick timing passes because the redskins are all over sims and folks there aren't many guys that can do that i mean that that does not come easy a guy who misses training camp and makes a one-handed stab like that landeta whose first two kicks are 37 and 30 and this one is about the same distance that's out of bounds at the 28-yard line and the crowd signaling here emotions in regards to one mr lindenetta you better produce when you come back and quick [Music] week the dallas cowboys head to phoenix for the cardinals first season home game it's abc's monday night football the only way to kick off your week [Music] redskins with two field goals have moved 55 yards 39 yards the giants have stopped them deep in their own territory twice two long miller field goals and now the redskins have the ball back a six nothing lead 251 to play in the first quarter washington starting from its own 28-yard line [Applause] again after the 36-yard line kenny hill the safety comes up to stop him after a gain of close to eight and that's big mark bay the right tackle who just makes eric dorsey disappear and this was a problem last week let's take a look left side of your screen 77 dorsey down in his stance watch how far to the outside mark may takes him spins him all the way back around timmy smith right up through behind tealman who gets a good block on carson and this was a problem last week the browns did this to the giants and they still haven't looked like they're getting ready even to stop the run [Music] on second and three williams excellent protection going deep for ricky sanders and too deep he was covered by perry williams and it will be third down and three i think we know who's in the barrel tonight it's going to be williams all night long they have everything that they have thrown deep they've thrown against williams totally staying away from mark collins over on the other side has been playing pretty good you think he's figured it out yet he's taking a deep breath and butterflies are turning in the stomach every time a receiver comes out there because they know he's the mark man and you know gibbs he's not going to let up on it he's doing it for some reason there's a purpose to this they send sanders out with him now on third down and three mcewen and bryant are the running backs in this set and monk goes in motion and comes back to the left as williams throws underneath to mcewen and he has a first down as williams converges with andy heading to make the tackle and washington has another first down with 150 to play in the quarter killer's not all that big 6-1 220 pounds but he gives you that good underneath receiver he's almost like a wide receiver in the moves that he can make and of course we mentioned before they found him as a replacement player but he worked so well under the gary clarks and the art monks and the sanders redskins at their own 45 first and ten [Applause] play fake great protection again going deep on williams again for sanders incomplete would i lie to you he's covering well though but they keep coming back to it perry williams has to be saying who did i offend over on the redskins sideline hey beautiful play fake it's a counter gap fake up on the inside he stuck with him all the way on man coverage and boy it just doesn't get any better than that by barry williams the key to that for williams is to know when that ball is coming and he knows he can feel it he can sense it when all of a sudden sanders is looking back for the ball that's when he's got to make the move look back for the ball and not lose his stride and he's done a fine job a well-run route perfect coverage and a good throw he's getting into it now big-time football there now it's second and ten and they send gary clark to the left so williams has that responsibility now as doug williams looks the other way throws and it's batted and nearly picked off incomplete mark collins nearly had the interception that might be why they don't want to go over to mark collins sides he now and only his third year out of cal state fullerton was a starter late in his rookie year he is a terrific man for man defender i can't believe the coverage by the giant secondary i mean this is flawless coverage in this last series played perfectly over the top of sanders by collins who almost comes up with a football and william sharp on his throw will look at it from the reverse angle and i mean this is textbook secondary work by the giants look how close he came to running away with that one he could have walked in for a touchdown third and ten as williams is protected well again and finds an open man clark but he drops the football he was open in amongst four giants and just simply dropped it i'll take that pass dan over the first one the williams through he threw that off balance under pressure strong arm and coming across the middle sure handed gary clark he'll probably not drop another one like this all season well maybe the giants ought to stay with a man for man because that's where they've been getting their good coverage that time clark works right into the soft spot of the zone and if the giants come back and win this football game they might look back at that play because that keeps the drive alive that would have been a first down and a lot of momentum for washington and they've been badly outplayed in this first quarter yet they trail only six nothing they're gonna get the ball back cox is cut mccocky is back to receive he calls for the fair cash and lets it bounce and it goes into the end zone so the giants get a break gage nearly downed it inside the five mcconkey took a real chance on that the fair catch somewhere around the 15-yard line in that no man's land where do i or don't i make the fair catch he's very good at it but look where he is i mean ordinarily you say you got to go for the fair catch there he's at the 21-yard line the rule of thumb is if the ball is going to hit inside the 10. let it go if it's going to hit outside the tent fielded look how close gage came to making that play and swatting it back outside the goal line you're right mcconkey took a gamble and got lucky so a 55-yard punt is worth only 35 net first and 10 and wrapping up morris is dave butts he may be 38 years old he may be near the end of his career but don't tell that to joe morris at this particular moment well the giant guards were pulling on the play and i guess they figured that dave butts was too slow to pursue from the inside mistake this guy is in the best shape of his life former teammate of mine in saint louis talking show him down on the field before the game i mean he looks better than he's ever looked in his life he's lifting weights for the first time in his career and that's got to be scary if you're a guard or a center and jumping on the left side was william roberts you saw the graphic that indicated bus was the second oldest player in the league the oldest is joe ferguson number 66 offense five yards still second down joe ferguson the quarterback for the with the bills for many years and now backing up pesto verdi at tampa bay is the only man in the league older than butts william roberts misjudged the snap count he thought it was on two and actually was on three and he was only about a yard and a half offside these things start to happen don't they dan when you feel you're in trouble as an offensive line as a whole and right now the giant offensive line is in trouble second and twenty from the ten yard line sims in the waning seconds of the quarter hicks bovaro and on a play that will end the first quarter bavaro is stopped at the 17. [Applause] goodness water will begin with a third and about 13. good news for bill parcells carl nelson finally blocked charles mann good protection that time by the whole giant line into the first quarter 6-0 redskins will return to giant stadium after this message and a word from your local station [Applause] [Music] one of the ways you can give an offensive tackle help is by keeping the tight end in close and let the defensive end think about him if you roll this tape that's mark bavaro on the right and look at the way he stays in tight to charles mann forcing man to come in more head up with carl nelson excellent job that time by nelson bavaro then late released and made the reception and the first play of the second quarter is a sack on third down and 12. sims gets buried on a blitz by daryl green number 28 one of the fleetest men in the league in fact a couple of years ago he won the nfl's fastest man contest and then he comes to deck sims you're going to get man-for-man coverage on that and again good coverage by the redskins but phil sims had enough time if he had an underneath receiver he could have gotten rid of it he just didn't have that underneath receiver they were trying everything deep landena to keck and his kicks have been real poor 37 30 and 27 from the end zone not a good one here but he may get a bounce and he does as it bounces out of bounds at the 47 yard lines and 47 he gets booed again as she departs after a 36 yard kick second quarter this abc sports exclusive is being brought to you by nissan cars and trucks built for the most important race of all the human race i don't know who the backup punter is maybe we ought to check it out because right now i think bill parcells may be thinking about it timeline data coming in with the bad back and he obviously just can't hit it next week first ever regular season game in arizona we'll be at sun devils stadium as the dallas cowboys meet the phoenix cardinals again an hour earlier than normal eight o'clock eastern five pacific next monday williams again protected well and hits timmy smith and what a difference the way the redskins are not only protecting williams but opening the holes for timmy smith and the job the giants are doing on the other side tonight well the one thing about it here if i'm a member of the new york giant defensive team uh i've got to be looking over my offensive squad and say hey you guys are killing us you got to do something and look at the stats they bear that out 35 yards total offense for the giants and only five yards of it on the ground this entire game so far so far has been the washington offense against new york's defense smith inside the 40 and he's close to a first down the giants knew they had to restructure and revamp their offensive line and they spent their first two draft choices on big tackles eric moore is one of them and big john l elliot is the other but neither is ready to assume a starting role elliot is a backup moore is in a backup capacity moore's not even active for this game and a number one and a number two at least early you would hope you'd get a little more production than that but it takes a while to break in the offensive line in this league it's not easy bill belichick the defensive coordinator for the giants they're doing their part they've got this thing held to six points when they the giants offense has done nothing and i think what dan touched on al is true it's so difficult to finesse the sophistication that is so often lost on pro football fans is the fact that it just takes a while to get that down on the offensive line it's thinking all the time they change things with the line of scrimmage instantly a lot of people are not aware of that but they've really got to be on top of it it takes a while to do it third down in inches well the redskins have been doing it because they've been playing together for quite some time as they bring back just about the super bowl squad in town a couple of minor changes timmy smith to the 35 he has the first down and interestingly here too dan is the fact that not only do the redskins have a very potent offensive line but again let's go back to the top of the show the schrader trade they're going to get another great lineman jim lachey and a great lineman indeed lachaise he might be one of the top 10 linemen in the league right now and as young as he is he's going to be playing for the redskins for years and what joe bugle the offensive line coach now has to try to figure out where are they going to play him there aren't many holes on that line certainly the exception of the rule of what we were just talking about a moment ago he came in with pro bowl material right away there aren't many holes but they sure open a few on first down timmy smith takes it to the 33-yard line so he has been the workhorse tonight again george rogers for many years in that role the redskins releasing rogers and it looked as if george might sign on with denver but when they traded dorset that ended their interest in him seattle had some interest in george but right now he's home now second long yardage and you gotta know that number 23 on the jazz perry williams is thinking well they're sending gary sanders out in front of me once more [Applause] could be thinking blitz they like to blitz on second and long second and nine from the 34 yard line but this time they only send three and that opens up the middle for kelvin bryant as he takes it to the 30-yard line he's about four yards shy of the first down johnson carson banks converging just seems like the redskins with their diversity of formations and motion and yet relatively a basic offense with all the movement that takes place that's nothing more than a back kelvin bryant just releasing out of the backfield and making four or five yards but because of the size of their offensive people their tight ends their lines they just come at you in waves and a four-yard gain is a four-yard gain but it also exacts some punishment out of a defensive team that always shows up in the second half when you're playing the redskins third and a long three from the 29. williams and open down the far side of sanders for the touchdown ricky sanders another of the record setters in the super bowl when he caught nine including an 80 yarder and washington makes it 12-nothing on a 29-yard pass from williams to sanders perry williams again appeared to be the victim although i looked as though a four-year veteran would know when he's going to get help on the inside here they wanted help from the inside and didn't get it here they are at the top of the screen watch williams come here and then he makes a move to the inside allowing sanders to have a free run at the end zone let's take a look at it there at the top of the screen he makes his move to the inside and for some reason is just oblivious to the fact that sanders is on the sideline and for some reason i don't know what it is perry williams was thinking one thing and really not paying attention to the man he'd given an outside release to i don't know if he was expecting help from canard or hill one of the safeties but you don't get help to the outside you don't get help to the sideline you know you made the point before dan washington is pretty much a basic team they run that counter gap so much and you don't think of them as being a big play team and yet last year they had by far more big plays meaning 40 yards plus than any team in the league and that one may not have been 40 but there's your big play right there on third and four and i think that goes back and just reflects what doug williams does best the long throw low miller on the extra point which is spotted at the 15 and this place has become pretty silent because it's been all washington again this was not the intended receiver for williams he looked downfield and it shows the vision he has the peripheral vision he picked up instantly when the receiver came open easy touchdown for the scans at the meadowlands al michaels frank gifford dan deodora season premiere of monday night football and looking down into giant stadium and up now at the goodyear blimp hovering high above on a beautiful night weather-wise not too beautiful for giants fans 13-0 line drive kick rusan from the eight back out to the 29-yard line stop by among others jamie morris there he is number 22 jamie morris of the washington redskins as rousson trots off jamie morris who's the brother of the giants joe who's having his problems tonight there's jamie out of michigan what did their mother and father finally decide to do at tonight's game they were at one time going to sit on either side of giants stadium here and switch at halftime joe's stats in the championship game we'll call that back up in a second and digest it as moak gets it out to the 34-yard line there it is morris versus washington early in his career had some tremendous days against them but washington has really stymied them and they've done so tonight as well and not just joe morris i don't know that there's a tougher team in the league and these might be the two toughest teams in the league to run the football against but the redskins always come to mind when i think of teams that are difficult to run against they're so big up front [Applause] second down five from the 35-yard line protected well that time and complete to mark ingram and he's a man they are hoping can really develop this year the number one pick out of michigan state last year he caught just two balls in 1987. starting the night makes his first reception of the game here he was a hold up for a long time last year and then gained a lot of weight and he ran a good pattern watch this movie puts on daryl green daryl green is going to spin all the way around and then ingram across to the middle watch him put a 360 on daryl green the all-world cornerback daryl green completely turned around that's that's some move by mark ingram against one of the best corners in the game green with enough speed to catch in on the play but that was a nice move that time by mark ingram on first down here's morris and he's tripped up in the backfield by wilbur marshall number 50 and i think this is a key drive here for the giants they have shown nothing to this point we are approaching the halfway mark of the second quarter and frankly they're fortunate to be down only 13-0 well it's a three-way game you've got offense defense and special teams and right now for the giants the only team that's playing anywhere close to average is their defensive team special teams with landeta's putting has been awful and offensively they just haven't done anything yet either you're not going to win a football game against the world champions only firing one out of three cylinders moad is split to the right on second and 12 as a wide receiver and they go in that direction and not even close as charles mann put the pressure on sims still pressure on samsa a few moments ago he was able to get the completion to moat he was knocked down by man on that occasion this time was man right in his face again and i wonder if he hit sims before the ball was thrown that way it was underthrown as severely as it was bart oates working against dave butts and that's damian johnson that time against charles mann who right in on sims and phil sims has had maybe one or two passes all night with an unobstructed view third and 12. he works from the shotgun now and he gives to adams on an inside handoff with a nice play by dexter manly normally and there is the pass rusher but reddit perfectly missing training camp of course with the drug suspension but there he was to stop it at the 45. that reflects what the thinking is offensively for the giants they didn't want to risk sends on a third and 14 they came it's not a bad call on a draw but i mean they just figured that they would not have time to throw the football is changing their offense the fact that they cannot protect him frank i think he might be right and that's sad for the giants if that's their thinking this early in the ball game landed his fifth punt already with 8 27 to play in the first half he's had a brutal night this is his best kick but ovation not much height but at least he got the distance and then he dies at the one that'll show you guys i can kick 53 yards for landetta to a standing ovation partial it didn't have a whole lot of hang time but it was effective about 1.5 at the one yard line so sean landetta saved at least until next time news and ohio state or southern california stanford that night nebraska and ucla college football premier saturday on abc sports with college football coming up this saturday i'll be doing the sc stanford games usc looked pretty good against boston college really got themselves a quarterback yeah rodney p wearing a great number washington pin deep skins at their own one yard line to start this drive and timmy smith tries to give him some room and only gets a yard he's wrapped up by eric dorsey number 77 it'll be second to nine with eight minutes to play in the half and washington leading 13 to nothing this is where a first down or a lack thereof is critical to the guys in the blue jersey if they can force the redskins to put from their own end zone hopefully maybe their offense will get a little momentum underway but right now it's on the shoulders of the redskins i mean the giant defense man that's where they miss a lawrence taylor he can make something happen down in a situation like this they really miss him here second to nine williams beautiful protection again throws to smith watch the ball at the nine yard line it's loose and the ground caused it azan warren actually came in and covered up warren number 85 comes up with the football to save it for washington just shy of the 10-yard line i don't know if the ground caused it or not that ball might have been loose before he hit the ground [Applause] let's look at it from behind and see if we can see from this angle again williams off his heels an easy throw to timmy smith oh the ball clearly out before he hits the ground that's a football all the way it's just a quick recovers and i'm sure they're going to take a look at this one this this will go to instant replay count on it that was harry carson and pepper johnson for the giants both on that collision it jarred it loose a fumble all the way by tim smith and now we're back to finding out who covered it up let's look at it reverse angle the reception and he's going to get hit this is harry carson coming from the inside pepper johnson from the outside okay the ball is down to the ground carson perhaps stripping it here comes warren warren will be coming into your picture 85. i can't see a football in there anywhere not yet at least score shot on the other side warren and they're digging [Applause] well that's going to be tough to figure something out from there as far as who has it i don't think i'd want to be up there right now that'll pinch back pacing back and forth okay let's look at it from our telestrator camera on top of the stadium and they are let's letting the play stand the redskins are going to go ahead and run a play well it's recovered by washington to begin with third down and one from the 10. so really there wouldn't have been a change of possession mcewan can't make the catch williams wants a call for a late hit he can't believe he doesn't get one big pressure by banks giants needed that desperately they said they're all pro linebacker he's only had three days of practice and he was right in william's face they're ruling that it was a fumble on the second down play and that it was recovered by the redskins and on third down williams under that pressure throws it short into the outside and this is what the giants and their defensive team needed go first down and hopefully they'll get decent field position if you're a giants fan that's what you're rooting for and wouldn't it be odd if this game turned on a landed punt as he was able to pin them deep and now we'll see if the giants can get the ball back in decent shape box with a bad kick is a marker down it is down at the 35-yard line but a flag is down and cox unhappy with a snap and they've really been having problems with their snaps flags where they fell usually indicates a receiver downfield early and there it is yeah that's the call but with that bad kick there's no way new york is going to take that penalty 59 offense equine first stop mike scully the center was down early he snapped the football and then took off mike scully is lined up in the center position this is him right here and watch him get the head start before the ball is kicked clearly downfield a good five or six yards he wasn't even close nice to be enthusiastic but it helps to be smart at the same time well let's see if the giants can capitalize now as they take over at the washington 35 yard line their deepest penetration they've been unable to do anything offensively they're down 13 to nothing and sims leads them up first and 10. it's a 35. morris behind him and manual in motion [Applause] sims good protection this time and he throws to the 30-yard line to bavaro for a gain of about five a reminder that right before the second half kickoff stay tuned for a special sneak preview of what promises to be one of the most remarkable achievements in television history a preview look a sneak preview look at war and remembrance a tremendous series beginning later this fall on abc and we'll preview it just prior to the second half kickoff second and five with the ball at the 30-yard line moat in motion and now sets up for the slot on the left man gets up into the flag is thrown bavaro makes the catch takes it to the 13-yard line coleman makes the stop mann was sent hand over heels as he charged in and then the flag thrown on the other side [Applause] and it will be against the giants and you can read that on parchell's face illegal procedure against the giants they really have not had a lot of time to work with this formation bavaro just coming back literally about 10 days ago number 84 offense went in motion sat on a line of scrimmage was outflanked by an eligible receiver still second down here's what it is right here here's zeke moat let's clear all this out of here here's zeke moat but if you look straight down the line he's flanked by another eligible receiver this makes moat ineligible and he went downfield on the play or rather he came back to block but still he's lined up in an ineligible position when you wear a number 84 you can't do that so that was a screwed up formation that time by new york second and ten we've got another flag and we've got sims deck back at the 43 yard line and a loose football but no says jorgensen no fumble he says but we do have a penalty draw was called grasping control quarterback sax and that's clearly the case there's no way that phil sims coughed up that football until well after he was smothered by a bevy of giants monty coleman the first one in there i mean a bevy of redskins giants also were in motion on that i believe it was moad again there's monty coleman number 51 lined up at the top of your screen coming inside johnson and nelson and he just runs right over the top of little joe morris and phil sims is just having a miserable night illegal motion number 84 offense but i said a moment ago now moat has not worked that kind of h-back f-back whatever you want to call it he didn't he had to play tied in when bavaro was holding out so he's not worth that much and you saw him come right towards you and go in motion towards the line of scrimmage so he's had a quinella here lines up in the wrong spot and then moves forward on the snap third down and 17. as moak goes to the bench giants out of the shotgun skins in four but protect sims well and it's caught by ingram and ingram should have moved forward he didn't know where he was and he kept moving forward he would have had the first down instead he's about three yards shy of it had he not turned back walton and davis make the tackle oh boy that's that's that's the lack of not playing i mean mark ingram came from a good program michigan state he knows better than that he has not played much for the giants again sims had protection ingram got open all he had to do is put the head down he's got the first down watch damian johnson watch him come back and pick off charles mann give sim some extra time now he's got to get to the 25. ingram has to get to the 25. he could have made it and yet he stops on the 27 and gets bounced back they're going to give him forward progress to the 26. but geez it looked to me like he clearly could have made it to the 25 without a problem no question the giants will call a timeout here and it's a case of its third down and 17. so i guess your natural lynch thinks are to say to yourself hey that's a long pass long enough for a first down normally i know right there you saw ingram took a look at it he knew he was going to get hit he tried to get a lot of yardage out of it but here's a first round drafting of a year ago that played so little and has played has been not in this kind of heat against the washington redskins monday night football and he took it through the outside instead of putting that head down and getting the first and the giants are going to go forward after taking a timeout parcel sends them up to the line first the fourth and one from the 26 yard line [Applause] the fake tomorrow sims throws over the middle knocked away at the 13-yard line by todd bowles who hits mark lavaro bowls the free safety hit him as the ball got there and washington takes over on down oh i think he had to have a little more of a play action fake on this hardly any by phil sims they were reading pass all the way a fool nobody gutsy call though look at the throw right to bavaro and look how well bowles times it out not even challenging the main part of bavaro's body but going across the front of his body and putting his shoulder pad right on the football and they were thinking past bowls balton all the way three tight ends in there for washington in this alignment as they button up and give it to timmy smith and he's up ended at the 27-yard line and the marker is thrown another flag down and doug williams picks it up and is going to hand it back against washington for holding with 4 28 to play in the first half redskins on top 13 to nothing good work by the cameraman you saw him coming right at you the big joe jacoby looks like a semi truck coming around on that counter gap holding number 85 offense 10 yards still first down don warren the tight end who lines up at the point of attack he's going to be working against carl banks and you can see the right hand when you got it up on top like that you have to work to get it out of the way both lymon come through but that right hand is just a big flag officials from all over the field can see and that's going to draw the flag every time then a hole get it down around the waist is that it dan well if you get it up there you better get it down in a hurry that's right hold inside get that jersey where nobody can see there is a technique to it that's your life there is i almost made a boob first and 20 deep drop and then throwing at the speed of timmy smith was williams smart play oh and heading is really getting on timmy smith smart play no chance of a completion doug williams just dumps it off hadn't i think thought that smith didn't catch the football because he was there but smith made a terrific play on it and those of you that will say well wait a minute isn't that is it that intentional grounding but intentional grounding has to be avoiding a sack williams isn't avoiding a sack there he just throws it at his ankles to get rid of it and just dispatch the down and start over against second he doesn't care about stats does he no real smart play because you don't want to complete that pass it would be a six yard loss second and 20 from the 16 yard line draw bryant and kelvin escapes one tackle and then gets spun down by mark collins who comes up from the corner at the 18 yard line so the skins were the third and long as the giants try to keep them deep in their own territory 340 left in the half we mentioned williams and the fact he's so unselfish good graphic right there as you can see the interception rate is about the same but there's the sack rate williams in his career three per hundred pass plays last year's average in the league is eight so he will throw the ball away is what it amounts to you throw it here run it frank gotta throw it third and 18. it's complete to warren and warren takes it out to the 29-yard line the tight end where adrian white comes up to knock him down short of the first down and so the giants will get the ball back with three minutes to go in the half and i say throw it you've got to throw it because at this point you don't want to as a coach let your offensive team think that you realize the defense is taking your offense away from you no but if you're going to throw it you do it just the way they're conservatively very high percentage tight end screen that time adrian white the giant safety shaken up but he appears to be fine on his way over to the sideline giants could offensively take a page from the redskins book also a little screen here and a little draw there wouldn't maybe perhaps slow that pass for us down a little bit that they're getting from the redskins well the new york giants will get another crack at it offensively [Applause] i don't know if that's good or bad the kick defensive probably telling him to go out there and hold him a while cox had a 55 yard but that was into the end zone for a touch back so a net 35 and then the last punt a poor one 25 yards and also a penalty on scully who was ineligibly down field good high deep kick this time the sure-handed mcconkey takes it at the 25-yard line and he has stopped at the 32-yard line the giants have two time-outs left in the half but after a 46-yard punt and a seven yard run back and 217 remaining in the first half 13 to nothing washington now at halftime you know the carl nelson story and we will detail it for you and jay schroeder traded by the redskins to the raiders who won with steve berlin quarterbacking them to a victory over san diego yesterday schroeder from the coast live at the half you looked at nelson settling in at right tackle giants from their own 32-yard line with manual in motion sims goes over the middle to manual green makes the tackle at the 38 yard line pickup of about six as we come up to the two-minute warning and the clock will stop at that mark and again the giants have spent one time out so they have two remaining two minutes to go in the first half washington on top of the giants on opening night 13 to nothing [Music] [Applause] dallas cowboys go head-to-head with their division rivals the phoenix cardinals on abc's monday night football the only way to kick off your week we can tell who the yuppie is the only one with the blazer well it's local that's right you're getting you're getting up in years you still need this coat on a 70 degree night it's a shirt sleeve weather at the meadowlands but it's a night that's been a long one thus far for giant fans because they're trailing 13 to nothing and at the 38-yard line two minutes to go in the half from the shotgun sim throws to pavaro he beat coleman and then monkey wrestles him down from behind at the 45-yard line first down why would i want to throw to that guy every time in a situation like this you'd think that something miraculous would have to happen to keep it out of bavaro's hands he lines up slot right this time on first down sims to the left and incomplete intended that time for george adams it'll be second and ten with 138 and two timeouts left in the half the giants just having trouble sustaining offensively they've had a couple good plays a couple well-executed plays but it's been very herky-jerky and this guy knows it there just hasn't been any continuity whatsoever and what a plus it could be for new york if they could get some points on the board even a field goal before halftime good deed man and now for the job from 83 odessa turner second and ten over the middle again to the 32-yard line and that time it's mark ingram the wide receiver who found an open spot and that's a first down and the clock continues to tick down 124 and moving the giants still with all three of their timeouts remaining from the shotgun again and over the middle and that time almost picked off by coleman right in his hands and mark bavaro was the intended receiver he hadn't yet made his cut and i don't know what was going on there it appeared to be some sort of confusion mark was about two seconds behind the throw watch by the time he makes his cut the balls by him they were on different pages here bavaro pulled up and turned he read the defense he read it as a pull-up and hook sims read it and he'll even continue right as if he was going to keep moving across and you can see sims with his palms up saying what's going on second down and 10 at the 31-yard line [Applause] here comes the corner blitz he steps up throws for the corner and it's caught at the 15-yard line by manuel who's taken down by brian davis stopping the clock with 107. bill sam's got the best of all worlds he came out of the pocket and a lot of open receiver near the sideline stops the clock does not have to use the timeout and he draws a flag [Applause] a lionel manuel that time running the good route but the key was sims and his ability to move bought some more time his redskins took a chance with the blitz and ended up with the play personal foul number 58 defense low to the face after the ball is dead half the distance first stop marshall whacked bavaro well after the play a good 10 seconds after the play there it is and half the distance takes it down to the seven first and goal 107 left in the hand flag thrown man saxon we'll see about the flag it's thrown you got to give that one to the secondary the redskins because that was good blocking up front and this one looks like it's going to go against washington again good coverage all right well that's good for another first down that'll be automatic and half the distance good protection at that time though by the offensive line number 58 defense additions to the goal line first stop maybe that's why the protection was so good let's take a look at it well wilbur on the daily double heading for the trifecta here two penalties in a row on wilbur marshall and the giants in a hurry to get something in the end zone 101 left in the half and as sims brings the giants up to the line [Applause] he does not take the time out washington took the time out the redskins took the time out [Applause] you can see that coming the giants charged to the line of scrimmage and then split two receivers out to the one side there's no way the redskins were in a position to set up defensively that quickly and that's a smart timeout by joe gibbs ball club the recent history of this shuri's has had the giants getting out to early leads and the redskins coming from behind to win the giants are hopeful of a reverse tonight of course down 13 to nothing last year in fact the giants led 16 to nothing at the half lost 23-19 and as you can see the giants have not been shut out in the first half here in quite a while that was jay schrader who brought the redskins back in that game he came in and had a tremendous second half and the redskins won that game 23-19 and again we're going to be talking to jay schrader who is now raider coming up very shortly and he has returned home california beach boy i guess you could call him yeah jade's got to be excited about well look at the position he's in i mean if he brings the raiders back if he gets the raiders on the winning side of a ledger you talk about one guy that's going to get all the all the praise and all the thanks put on his shoulders it's going to be jay schrader he'll he'll almost be a savior in los angeles if if he can again make winners out of los angeles raiders first and goal the giants in this half have seven first downs five on this drive maurice parthen is in there's the blocking back number 44. and he'll block from morris but what a play by dave but oh man got a face mask of all things after the play by butts breaking through the facemask and again the giants pull a guard in front of dave butts thinking he can't catch a play [Applause] take a look at this the guard in front of butts the whole offensive line is pulling and look at this they don't think he can catch the play and it's actually reisenberg the guard who gets face mask on the play it's not the ball carrier butts has a hold of doug reisenberg numbers and then he gets morris he just collected everyone in the area this is steer wrestling here by big dave grab a handful big guy and another first down for the giants first and goal with 56 seconds you know these are uncharacteristic mistakes wouldn't you say though dan al for the ripskins very much so time-out called here by the giants 40-second time-out and they have one one remaining you know the redskins you think of them as being pretty buttoned up and very disciplined and they'll get the big play occasionally but but a team that is not penalty prone under that man joe gibbs well wilbur marshall doing it and a 15-year veteran in the butts involved well i'll say this now over marshall's penalty he was holding a tight end trying to release off the line of scrimmage buttz's penalties there were almost instinctive i mean i don't know that anyone any defensive player ever intentionally grabs the face mask of another player and that time dave butz he just grabbed every face mask in sight get two for the price of one they only flagged you for one of them you know that last play started at the three and a half washington gets penalized and now the ball is back at the five yard line it's almost as if they marched it off the wrong way you know al you would notice that well it should be at the one and three quarters right now remember the last play started at about the three and a half the distance and here's the ball sitting at the five yard line not that it really matters here it's first and goal they don't have to worry about running out of downs the face mask took place at the 10 yard line and they marched it off from the 10 yard line half the distance down to the five right you would notice that well i had the privilege of looking at a replay and sims nearly gets sacked and in fact he was in the grasp in control of all koowitz number 52. and olgawitz timed at blitz beautifully neil okowitz take a look at neil okowitz right here watch him make his move right up the middle he times this beautifully and there's no way that phil sims has a chance sneaks right behind daryl grant that's otis anderson or is that zeke moet that zeke moad coming in trying to make the block and just can't pull it off and again moat playing in a very unfamiliar position second and goal sims has it tipped away by green who goes high in the air to take it away from manual even emmanuel caught it he would have been out of bounds at about the nine pro all pro throw though by sam's he knew he couldn't complete it but he also avoided the pick off monty coleman is out there there comes the guy they're really afraid of daryl green what a play by darrell green times that one just as perfectly as could be goes up in the air and bats it away monty coleman had a handful of jersey there for just the briefest of moments third and goal 29 seconds giants have one timeout adams is in there and the shotgun was shipped tim steps up throws adams has its six yard line it's going to be fourth and goal now wilburn makes the tackle 18 seconds and the giants are gonna send in the field goal unit raul allegre who had a very spotty pre-season and in fact his job in a little bit of jeopardy they looked at mcfadden the former eagle this week the giant's going to take a timeout and they do five seconds left in the half giants [Applause] so parcells sending in the field goal unit now it'll be about a 23-yard attempt for raul allegri you know the giants had time for sims into a bad situation look at the three receivers i have to this side of the field these two are going to run right down into the end zone and be standing right next to each other the third one's going to come into the outside and phil sims really is going to have no choice but to work to the other side of the field frank you know you don't have two receivers that close in the end zone oh and when your quarterback gets in trouble you should be thinking looking coming back giving him something to throw with all three of them all three of those guys are running patterns down in the end zone long after sims has been forced to already throw the ball to adams giants have struggled over the past few years with wide receivers they just have not been able to get production from wide receivers usually relying on their tight end and in most cases over the years last couple of years mark bavaro allegre who missed two from 38-47 in their final preseason game against cleveland last week as a chip shot here and puts it through so as the half ends the giants at least come away with three on their only impressive drive of the half as they march down deep into territory and at halftime at the meadowlands it's washington 13 and the giants three and we'll be back at giant city and after this from your local station and welcome back to giant stadium east rutherford new jersey al michaels frank gifford dan deardorff we start the second half the giants trailing 13-3 and raoul alegre will kick the field goal to end the first half kicks off to begin the third quarter and a spinning kick two yards deep in the end zone the rookie mike oliphant out of puget sound takes it out to the 24-yard line an interesting case didn't play high school football became a professional welder enrolled in college at age 21 drafted by the skins and doug williams now to lead the redskins first and ten from the 24-yard line and it ain't good when there's a minus in front of one of your numbers on your half-time stats minus three yards rushing for the giants i think that better than anything else tells you what kind of a game it has been up front for the new york giant offensive line and their entire offensive team that's that's tough to win a football game with numbers like that and joe morris is minus 11 for seven carries you know it's tough to be in a football game with numbers like that and somehow the giants have done it only down by 10. smith timmy takes it on to the 30-yard line terry canard comes up to make the stop the giants fortunate that defensively they were able to at least pull the skins to a couple of field goals on those first two washington drives to stay in the game 13-3 as we start the third quarter and there are the numbers for smith who set that super bowl record with 204 yards redskins are so relentless their offense is almost self-generating they come right out and run their big bread and butter play and they get a quick six or seven yards out of it they're tough that offensive line of theirs is really functioning look at the blowout second and four and timmy smith comes up a little short of the first down you know something i like to watch in the second half of a game the way they run the football is watch the ball carrier when he's tackled does he drive forward and fall forward or has he driven back and i think more often than not you find out in the second half the redskins generate so much forward momentum that even when the ball carrier is hit he still falls forward for that extra yard or two then maybe he didn't in the first half of the ball game the old surge syndrome it's just called brute strength finally exacting a goal on the other guy third and two and it's bryant in there in the backfield in the short yardage situation williams throws for brian and his forward progress will net him a first down they push him all the way back but he'd gotten out to the 36-yard line he's pushed back by andy head first down washington doug williams another completion his first year of the second half he by the way is the travelers man of the year from the washington redskins travelers of course will name their man of the year for the nfl at the super bowl he's also his bankers man of the year isn't he yeah but he uh he's uh the recipient of a new long-term multi-million dollar deal from jack kent cook in the redskins three years between what 3-2 and 3.5 million not bad that's what's been reported first down from the 36-yard line with monk in motion and williams again great protection throws underneath for smith nice little dance step and he moves it out to the 39-yard line just to follow up on that jay schrader trade with lachey coming to washington not only did they get lachey but bobby beathard telling me before that the redskins will receive four or five draft picks over the next two or three years some specifics to be worked out but when i asked him what picks he said well i can't really tell you i said real high he said not first or second round redskins wouldn't know what to do with any of those anyway bobby they had three number ones in the last 20 years second and seven from the 39-yard line and smith breaks it for a first down and a flag comes in at the end of the play that might be another face mask with that flag coming in like that but there's a fifth round draft pick of bobby bethes running that football for at least first down yardage whether or not it'll stand or not i think kenny hill got his left left yard face mask defense five yards from the end of the run first down yeah you can see kenny hill is going to make the play and he's going to get his left hand over the top take a look here's hill in pursuit the play's going to come over here watch his left hand it's not going to be his right it's his left hand it goes across the back of the helmet and hooks the face mask right over the top of timmy smith that's the inadvertent face mask there's the right and then he does get the right on it as well well i didn't even see the right get up there now why'd you guys show a close-up and make me look stupid like that that's why we showed it here's smith bang down at the 40-yard line by dorsey man i had this all worked out about his left hand and then it sounded so good it did i believed it even though i saw it wasn't quite right i almost tried to push it even after i saw the record if you had snorted and run it a few times i would have really bought it well that time the ball carrier went backwards good play up front by dorsey in the giant defensive line you mentioned me notice i'm changing this up yeah i know you are quickly you know you mentioned before only three first-round picks for the redskins in the 20 years the last 20. mark may daryl green and art monk not bad no and williams upset here because he has to take a timeout well if you're only going to get three number ones at least make them count and that's what the redskins have done up by 10. several games stand out in this storied rivalry 22 years ago in a game between the giants and the redskins the score in the fourth quarter was 62-41 redskins and they weren't finished this electrifying run by bobby mitchell made it 69-41 charlie goldilock added a field goal it was the highest scoring game in nfl regular season history 113 points [Music] not only the record for most total points but also the record for one team in a regular season game 72 that mark not in jeopardy here 13-3 is the score from the 40-yard line on second and 11 williams going deep and swatted away by perry williams terrific coverage he had position on gary clark and clark didn't have a chance with the exception of that first touchdown he has turned into some marvelous coverage tonight the all-out blitz that time by the giants forces man coverage williams knows it's just him and gary clark all by themselves and just the speed move to the outside but the key there for williams was turning around and playing the ball he turned around saw the ball when it was delivered and played it as good as you possibly can do it you saw 54 that would be a lawrence taylor that's andy hitton and it might have been a lawrence taylor a little closer to doug williams trump's not here i wonder what goes through a cornerback's mind when he hears that all-out twist called in the huddle third and 10 from the 40. look the ball is loose it is intercepted by george martin and that would figure george martin who's played more games than any giant in history that's the first interception mark does not return for a touchdown and that's pepper johnson that comes on the blitz bill parcells told us he was going to line pepper johnson up to the outside and have him try to be effective the redskins that time don't even block johnson watch him come from the right side and hit doug williams just flush in the back and the ball clearly not a pass his arm was not moving forward at the time and george martinez we talked about so many times before in the right place some of the things you lose in the play now watch williams he'll even try to make it look like a pass even though he gets crunched that's that's a pro well can the giants do anything with a break they had a good drive which ended in a field goal it was their only decent drive of the first half and sims has to throw it away and that's a sack he was in the grasp at the 34-yard line of charles mann and he's lucky he didn't get called for intentional grounding [Applause] that would have been a loss of down as well manly gets the publicity but mann is the man what a game he had against the bears in the playoffs and watch him work here three sacks he's playing that way again tonight he'll take the inside we talked about nelson's left shoulder being the shoulder that he had surgery on back in january and working it to the inside man right in sims face second down and 21 from the 35 yard line and it's a low throw and at the 43 yard line it's bavaro but no ball hits the turf third down and 21. the papers blowing around the giant stadium now with a win picking up giants coming up here with a third and 21 and there that's what's happened thus far they have made none they're all for seven well the key there third and four was their best possibility of converting a lot of long yardage situations in there 2 12 and a 17. third down 21. redskins in four going deep and a little bit underthrown because manuel was moving down the sideline with brian davis covering and then had to come back for it fourth down good coverage by brian davis who really pushed barry wilburn at the beginning of the season wilbur was a holdout but there's brian davis number 34 in his second year out of brass he had good position on that that would have been difficult for him to put that anywhere where he could have caught it rush is on landena gets it away yeah short kick fielded at the 24-yard line by oliphant i think that was odessa turner wasn't it oh we heard him odessa turner makes the stick the dallas cowboys head to phoenix for the cardinals first season home game it's abc's monday night football the only way to kick off your week doug williams and the redskins at their own 25-yard line 1005. left third quarter washington on top 13-3 on opening night a look there at carl banks again a late signee practice this week and he's seen a lot of action tonight from the 25-yard line first and ten [Applause] smith now for the giants so much of course coming into this game made of lawrence taylor and that suspension and the question now becomes when will taylor come back and the giants have been pretty adamant about the fact that it doesn't necessarily mean he'll be back in four weeks when it's over frank it could be a lot longer than that i think it's pretty widely known around this area that lawrence taylor has not entered a rehabilitation facility at all he's been playing a lot of golf and i presume that he will he'll have to get some kind of treatment that's part of the nfl drug policy but it has not transpired yet [Applause] second and fourth smith stopped for just about no gain further that the biggest question i've had asked me all along has been is he going to be paid and it comes to about sixty two thousand dollars a game the giants have not stated yes or no like a flat fetcher he won't get paid for it and i don't see why they just took him right out to say that he's not going to be paid for i don't see why they call it a substance abuse why don't they call it drug abuse this stuff is ruining this game of football and it has to eventually start turning the public off and something has to be done even much more than being done today third and four from the 31. [Applause] williams pressured that time and incomplete looking for gary clark frank i i want to add something that i don't know that drugs are ruining the game of football but i know that they're ruining the lives of some of the people that play the game of football i mean it's it's certainly tainting the image maybe of of all sports in all of society as well but in reality it boils down to what's happening to the individuals involved and the league's going to really have to come up with a more equitable policy in terms of punishment because it is kind of absurd when you think about manly and taylor and manly is here tonight and taylor is not bad kick off his foot and it's down at the 47 and that was a bad snap by mike scully and they've had a lot of problems with the snapping during the preseason it's continued tonight dexter manley has not been a real happy guy for the most part tonight he wants to see more action he has been in there sparingly as he paces the sideline he's not in there now first down from the 48-yard line as phil sims retreats and throws over the middle for joe morris for a gain of five and deep downfield a flag and holding his arms outstretched his bulls yeah todd balls i don't know if he committed a foul or not but he sure acted guilty don't if it's not on utah don't give it the old who me that's a that's a surefire indication everybody understands and on tv that it might be you don't say i didn't do it until they catch it that's right find somebody to stand behind holding number 40 defense five yards first stop see there's a perfect example it's out it's on alvin walton and yet todd bowles was the guy acting like he was on him bulls might have thought it was on him he might have just dodged a bullet and jorgensen says i've seen that movie before first and ten at the 46. sims off the fingertips of bavaro who had position on a walton second and ten 805 to play third quarter redskins on top 13-3 good-looking play that time by the giants we saw single coverage on mark bavaro that's because wilbur marshall number 58 comes on the blitz and this time he's ridden to the outside pretty effectively by william roberts wilbur gets in there late if sims would have had to hold the ball for another second marshall would have made the play but as it was roberts the left tackle was affected second and ten sims and he finds morris and morris breaks a couple of tackles and adds ten more down to the 22-yard line those 10 additional yards were out of the frustration that i think joe feels from the lack of finding any holes on the offensive running game and he just puts his head down and he becomes the biggest man on the field right here what was dustin hoffman's movie little big man i guess is an excellent example right here look at the balance and the power and the low body lean keeping those shoulders low to the ground richie pettibone the defensive coordinator of the redskins this is a situation a place on the field where he loves to blitz first and 10 from the 22 not this time and the pace is off the fingertips of manual what a throw by philson was that beautiful and what an angle our camera had still sims dead on stride to the sure-handedness receiver he has out there he's working against barry wilburn lionel manuel again single coverage and wilburn beaten on the play looks like lionel just misjudged where the ball was going to come rather than hit in the center of his two hands it glanced off the outside of his right hand you know what you do you come back and say let's just do it all over again wilburn is being pressed for a starting spot by brian davis second and 10 from the 22. and again it's manual working on woburn but sims looks the other way and into the end zone knocked away intended for zeke moad [Applause] at that time the giants wasted a good pickup of the blitz a double blitz wilbur marshall neil okowitz both came and we're both handled effectively and bulls takes care of the defense in the secondary with 707 to go in the third boy and one of the guys up front is joe morris that makes the block on okowitz coming up the middle boy you hate to squander an opportunity like that okowitz comes out now that the skins will go into their nickel situation there's joe morris right there with the block thanks guys good look at it up in the middle moet just timing off went up a little early shotgun third and 10 from the 22. sims flag is thrown he hits ingram for a first down at the seven a marker is down and manley is in a strap back at the 35. manly and william roberts the takedown damian johnson is right there a two-pointer i think william roberts was going to be the guy that was flagged for holding dexter manly to begin with dexter took a hard upfield rush and it looked like roberts dragged him to the ground and look out george adams and wilbur marshall exchanging phone numbers adams wants a piece of his paycheck and the umpire took a shot as well that time ron faris [Applause] i think initially the problem was between william roberts and dexter manley and here's robert's right here here's manly watch the upfield rush and watch roberts run him into the ground the flag comes from the sideline and that's normally the line judge who's watching the left tackle you can see the tackle that roberts puts on manly right there and the flag you can see being thrown at the bottom of your screen but then another flag was thrown during the fracas so we may have offsetting or there are more flags there are three flags right now for starters and i think three separate incidents as well oh here we go dexter has the face mask robertson turned damian johnson that flag is for manly there so you've got one down probably for the hold one for manly and you've got one on the seven yard line funny how we just saw dexter on the sideline obviously extremely frustrated [Applause] william roberts and there are more flags than officials i'd i'd like to know where a couple of these extra ones came from they are everywhere [Applause] and i think is that dick jorgensen with a bloody nose it could be ron ferris the umpire i know went down [Applause] jorgensen it appears has some blood on his lip somebody's bleeding he sure does it's a contact sport two personal falls on a defense 72 and 66 holy and a personal fall on the offense all penalties offset will replay at the previous clock watch the sequence once again this was after the hold had been called man he just kept coming at roberts and enrique gets him by the face mask and they get into it there the flag is already down at this point and jorgenson caught it right at the beak i think william roberts got him with a right you could see dick jorgensen's hat fly off william not good not good getting a referee these guys have long memories so they pick them all up and just play it over again and when you stop and think about it that's really the easiest way to handle the whole situation ingram down on the turf and look at barry wilburn come in for a shot you could have called that a late hit if you would have felt like it didn't have any more flags after all that yeah it's third down and 10 from the 22 and so back we come once we started and sims running for a first down inside the 10 and out of bounds and mark bavaro made a block that gave him another 10 yards on monty coleman tomorrow does a lot more things than just catch footballs he's a football player complete in every way well he gave sims the sidelines that time by throwing a block on monty coleman and phil sims took advantage of it and a good look at it here from behind the redskins no hesitation from sims he's going to run and bavaro's going to turn not much on technique as he actually trips and falls effectively i don't think that's a word but it applies first and goal at the nine it's the first time they've converted a third down in the game and sims throws it out of the end zone with 6 35 to go in the third quarter navarro is really attracting a crowd there are at least three defenders on him in the end zone sims was looking at him all the way i think he's getting frustrated trying to go trying to go out of the outside and sims very intelligently did throw it away well the giants have been down here before and the last time they went backwards they had a goal line situation in the first half and self-destructed and went backwards they need to make something positive happen i say make a play again into the end zone meanwhile the crowd is taunting mainly who is on the richton's bank manual goes in motion morris has a big hole in a touchdown over carl nelson behind by moab and carl nelson the guy that does make a block goes into a pass protection mode and works downfield and screens off the outside and little joe makes the cut for the touchdown raul allegray for the extra point as the giants try to get within three [Applause] puts it down and the giants who were down 13 to nothing now trail 13-10 joe morris had been stymied to this point in from the nine a great call by the giants going on the draw and the delay joe morris that's the most daylight this guy's seen since training camp and he converts it into a touchdown accused meets ohio state or usc tackles stanford and that night nebraska takes on ucla abc's college football premieres saturday [Applause] so the new york giants march in for a score with 6 31 remaining in the third quarter defaulter within three as allegri kicks off and sends it down to the six yard line mike oliphant the rookie from puget sound gets taken down by odessa turner let's look at the touchdown play again frank talked earlier about zeke moat and the problems he'd been having blocking from the full back position watch neil oklewitz come in on the blitz and watch moet seal off this hole inside then nelson's block and joe morrison for the touchdown but watch moet from the fullback position takes down olkowitz takes down wilbur marshall and takes down one of the linemen making that play happen you couldn't design this better had a little look of a pass terrific blocked by moet and look at that reaction by phil simms he might celebrate a touchdown better than any quarterback in the league and they can celebrate even more right now because washington penalized on a kick return back to the 11-yard line and are relatively subdued in fact very subdued washington banks looking on right now first and ten from the 11. 6 20 to play third quarter and a good part of the crowd on its feet williams finds the open man at the 24 ricky sanders that time andy headen almost got to williams heading again playing in that spot where lawrence taylor is missing good athlete he's a terrific athlete as a matter of fact when he was in college back at clemson he started out as a quarterback wound up returning kicks played wide receiver played full back very athletic well i'll tell you what's impressive to me doug williams feel of the pocket and how he stands in there until the very last moment waits to release the ball first and ten washington from the 25-yard line smith cuts to the outside he's taken down by harry carson seems almost incredible that a team that had minus three yards rushing at halftime is now trailing by only three 13 to 10. a lot of veteran leadership on this giant team there's one of the guys nine pro bowls for harry carson second and eight from the 27. and williams has it dropped by mcewen right in his hands and out it came pepper johnson celebrates third down and eight it's been amazing when things start to go the momentum starts to change little things start to happen williams right on target right in the hands of mcewen [Applause] of course he has banks running his eyes also young player who told you earlier mchugh and a guy who caught on during the replacement games last year finding himself in a real pressure situation here tonight that's that's the kind of a ball you just can't drop it may be a while until he's back and when things start to change as you suggest frank it's punctuated when it's at home and the crowd really gets into it a din at giant stadium on third and eight as williams retreats under a lot of pressure incomplete and in fact they sack he was in the grasp in control of eric howard and williams can't believe the call as he removes his helmet well eric howard that time just blows by jeff bostic the center of the redskins and it looked like they were confused boy this is just going one side to the other look at howard just beat bostic to the outside i don't know if jeff thought he was going to have help from his left guard raleigh mckenzie or not but boy good play that time by eric howard in the middle you don't often get that kind of pressure from a nose tackle [Music] now washington having trouble with their snaps mike scully who was just reactivated for the game to snap it for cox standing at his own one yard line mccocky to receive [Applause] this time the snap is good and the kick is high and relatively deep and mcconkey has it at the 43-yard line he gets five branch he gets by another man he's got a blocker out in front of him he's inside the 30 and he's pulled out by cox the punter that's the 21 and the crowd goes wild the conkey slowed this to the right and then brought it back to the left picking up his key blocks on the picket line and cox who is in on the tackle now watch mcconkey he'll take it up towards the middle and then he'll start to the right a little bit bring him back there and now his picket line is set up out here you see it developing and mcconkey just turns on the speed it's a good block out front from sherwin former indianapolis colt tied in the giants picked up a couple of weeks ago sims asks for quiet leads them up to the 22-yard line 4 15 to play in the quarter he goes right back up top going deep and incomplete intended for manuel he was covered by wilburn second and 10. how many times do you see that and i'm not sure that i agree with it every time immediately after a big play like that always trying to go into the end zone i i you know you see it and it doesn't work as often as you think you've got the good field position you're at the 22. why not go ahead and just slam it in there the giants have shown some success running the football wilburn with just outstanding coverage on manual and i think that's the ball that phil sims just put a little more on it than he should have just to get rid of it on second and ten carson comes in to block man and the pass is thrown and caught at the 16-yard line by mark ingram he stayed in to the chagrin of green good block by carson that made that possible as well he didn't get you know frank he's not going to get both feet in bounds i don't think but i think the referee on the sidelines the lines are going to rule that ingram was knocked out about ellie if he is knocked out of bounds they both feet do not have to come down inbounds and there is the contact first green oh that's a good catch he could have got that foot down easily third down three giants at the 15 yard line then incomplete covering on the play was marshall intended for bavaro almost got it on the ground talk about steel on steel wilbur marshall and mark bavaro going head-to-head on a pass route rather than blitz wilbur boy a good shot on the tight end causing him to have a late release and i'll tell you what mark mark rivaro's leg just going out from under him you have to think that he's still up in the air if he's been all the way through training camp that's that's a rusty pass route right there by a receiver who hasn't had a great deal of practice 33-yard attempt to tie it by allegra perfect and so the giants who scored at the end of the first half have added 10 here in the third quarter and have caught the redskins with 3 55 to play in the third quarter 13-13 you go back to that play by wilder marshall on mark bavaro that's how you draw it up and that's how a coach says don't allow a tight end to release from the line of scrimmage give him a shot make him stop making start over and that's exactly what wilbur marshall did and by the time bavaro was five yards downfield mark didn't know where to go and his legs in essence just crumpled underneath him you know dan when we saw him a few weeks ago against miami i think even the redskins were beginning to question that they really got the product they thought they were getting because he was a little hesitant but a lot of it had to do with the numerology the redskins used was totally opposite from the bears and he was just slow picking it up and all of a sudden he began to gel as you mentioned last week against atlanta he started to look like the wilbur marshall that we know there you see cox holding that hand he was in on that play against mcconkey on that punt return [Applause] he had to make the play on mcconkey let's see if we can pick up where he gets injured grabs phil with his right hand it looks like he heard it right off the bat or else he did it there dropping down he sure let go of him in a hurry with his right hand but then he landed on his right hand as well so one or the other take your pick and washington sends ricky sanders back to take the kick and from one yard into the end zone he comes to the 21-yard line as the redskins try to get regenerated now in their own territory with 3 45 to play in the third quarter so things starting out swimmingly tonight for washington a couple of good drives early on a 13-nothing lead but they've been stymied by the giants defense since saturday you will see in the afternoon either syracuse against ohio state or usc taking on stanford in college football and in the big prime time game from the rose bowl nebraska against ucla saturday night at eight here on abc redskins first and ten from the 21-yard line and they begin with smith nothing doing there as banks comes in to stop them for a loss of one carl banks as an outside linebacker plays the run better than any linebacker in the national football league he fights off blockers he gets in on the play better than any linebacker i've seen in this league that time working against don warren the tight end look how he stays on his feet look how he drives up field and makes the play at or even behind the line of scrimmage a yard loss on that play and wasn't that a song nobody does it better i think it applies to that guy second and 11 from the 20. williams goes to the 30-yard line and a nice match made there by sanders but he takes a shot and a flag goes down there's a flag back down at the line of scrimmage that flag is always against washington paul holding when it's dropped in that spot almost invariably will you get the whole call holding number 53 offense still second down jeff bostic the center they'll remember bostick had trouble last time the redskins had the ball with eric howard this time he's working against howard again and this time howard makes a move to the other direction makes it to the right of bostic this time and bostick hooks the right arm and draws the flag a couple of bad series for jeff boston still second down second and 21 from the 10. 13-13 tie 243 remaining in the third quarter williams on a roll second and 21 stops fires and is lucky it's not picked off by carson clay is dead [Applause] looks like doug williams is going to get around to the outside banks again i think was carl banks that worked his way up field and well played also by john washington who is playing tonight for the injured leonard marshall see banks got that angle williams had to pull up probably before he wanted to and then he knows he has to fire it he puts it right into harry carson's hands that ball took harry by surprise he had his back turned initially it looked easier than it really was there in slow motion from behind third and 21. clark left monk and sanders to the right with monk now in motion to clarkside and they keep it on the ground kelvin bryant can get only three have these guys change jerseys or what and washington with the injured punter cox to kick it away hill and banks in on the tackle and do you think carl banks is fired up do you think this guy is trying to make something happen he's got contained to the outside there he takes on mckenzie fights him from behind and also the washington play was a concession to the giant defense drew his third and tremendous shardage but they also were not going to put it up in the air back to what i said earlier about playing the run [Applause] scully snapping standing in the end zone makaki is at the 50 to receive good snap kick fielded by mccocky at the 47. and down he goes right there reggie branch makes the tackle and has a word or two with phil 34-yard kick two-yard run back and the giants have it on the other side of the 50 with a score tied at 13. bringing you up to date a 13-13 tie a couple of field goals after two impressive drives but the giants were able to hold deep early then washington on a touchdown from williams to sanders made it 13-0 allegri kicked the field goal at the gun to end the first half and now the giants have done all the scoring here in the second half as bavaro drops an easy one not easy to flip that switch this guy's only had a week of practice frank and it's just not easy and rusty knows to show it came in just before the last preseason game against cleveland got a little action there and was really rusty in this this game actually if you look at it you can almost see him take his eyes off the football and perhaps what you said is true dan had he get into contact a little more during the preseason he could have taken his eyes off that ball and still handle it on second and ten look out marshall deck sims and creates the incomplete pass well that's a screen that's a screen to that side and when wilbur comes on a blitz somebody's got to tap him somebody's got to stop his upfield rush or your quarterback doesn't have a chance i can see you could get confused about whether or not they changed the uniforms they're both wearing 58s two of the best that have ever played this game here's one of them marshall william roberts tries to get him joe morris is going to be the back that's involved in the screen he thought about taking a stab at wilbur and passed and phil sims i'm trying to think the last time he had to play a football game where he was harried as much as he's been harry tonight on third and ten five-man rush and he finds the receiver at the 28-yard line it's odessa turner making the cash for a first down a big third down and long conversion for the giants he's the big man 6-3 205 pounder the big target for the giants a superb athlete in around a couple of years as a second round draft pick and he handled that beautifully he knew he was going to get hit this is what you look for when you send that receiver over the middle concentration and he did get hit by brian davis first and 10 from the 28-yard line draw morris wrapped up by bucks [Applause] and about a half a minute now to play in the third quarter marshall and oates in the middle of that minor skirmish do you notice a difference between tonight's game and a pre-season game [Applause] i i sense a little more intensity on the field not much mine too but just a little bit elite i think these guys actually care who wins [Applause] second and eighth tim's going deep 2d good coverage by green on the play and 10 is for manual with seven seconds now left in the third quarter i'll tell you expect it though from daryl green and it was absolute perfect position on he had the inside position and sims was watching it all the way put it out hoping to catch the fingertips of manuel but it was perfect position on the part of green [Applause] not as good as you can get and keep in mind he's 5 8 170 perennial pro bowler but he just forced manual right out of the play watching the ball all the way avoiding the flag i look at daryl green and i think of that play made in chicago last year during the playoffs [Applause] third and eight manuals a flag is thrown the play ends at the 13-yard line and the back judge comes in with a marker and charles mann really laid it on sims as he released it it'll be the end of the third quarter when we find out about the penalty charles mann was looking for a holding call on carl nelson didn't get it the crowd saluting the giants as the period ends now well i guess we're not going to get a number on who the infraction was against third quarter belongs to the giants we're tied after three and we'll be back after this message about an upcoming show on abc in a word from your local station [Music] well this game has really changed around i go back to what i said at the top frank in the sense that the giants if they play well tonight even if they lose have to be encouraged because that schedule is so easy the rest of the way that they'd almost be a lock for the playoffs when you look at how they finish up the year and they have to be very encouraged the way they played the third quarter turned this around dramatically here really at midway in the second quarter they were a different football team but it's really turned around in the third quarter oh keep in mind these are the last two super bowl champions there has to be a certain amount of uh integrity involved to get there joe morris on first and ten picks up three gets to the 10. so as the fourth quarter begins it is second down and seven and a look at manhattan the empire state building the sites of the fabulous city of new york well there are a lot of people trying to get into that city tonight yep uh world trade center will be coming into view and dapper dan's all night boutique the whole bit right there from the goodyear blimp america dapper dan open all night i don't want that guy mad at me that was al michaels second and seven from the champion caught by moab well this here's highlight fill material here's highlight fill material neil okowitz oh is it ever he's never in on a pass neil okowitz the middle linebacker after completion just takes the football away i mean put this one away if you're taping this game don't erase this [Applause] zeke moet with the catch here's okowitz down on his knees and watch him just strip it away that's beautiful oh that's oh nice stuff nice stuff neil okowitz been around for 10 years i don't think has the year ever gone by that they have not wanted to get a new linebacker to replace him and he just keeps coming back like a stray dog and ironically his role with the redskins is to play the run and get out on passing fifty are you ever in there in a past situation 12th fumble recovery of his illustrious career and a big one dimming the giant tide as smith takes it after the seven yard line and the giant defense doing a nice job since the first quarter bottling up smith and the running game and we can't emphasize enough this is a new york giant defense without leonard marshall without lawrence taylor and in reality a team sent reeling by the loss of taylor earlier this week and admirable the way they played tonight a miserable first half and yet still had what it takes to fall their way back into a football game against the world champion second down and eight from the sick yard line and this time smith able to exploit the hole canard makes the tackle out at the 19-yard line in the redskins now with some breathing room 13-20 to play now you look at it and you just feel and sense the character of both of these ball clubs the redskins another team might have totally given this thing up this game was taken away from them all of a sudden this is a scrapping team once again and bill belichick the defensive coach on the sideline with the red t-shirt calling the defense for the giants meanwhile smith has gone over 100 yards that's 103 yards on 20 carries around monk looking to throw then he'll keep it and it stops at the 20-yard line he was looking downfield for gary clark but clark was covered by terry connors good read by canard that was a pass all the way now look at the last 16 ball games that these teams have played go right to the fourth quarter and look how the skins have dominated 122 points to 68 and the only three that counted in overtime you know that's good for a win the last time the redskins played the giants regular team here they lost 17 to nothing in the playoffs second down nine from the 20-yard line and williams going deep batted away mark collins and he comes up limping good coverage on sanders as collins comes hobbling back and andy hidden and pepper johnson that time forced williams to release a little early [Applause] well we're now entering the mistake zone a 13-13 ball game under 12 minutes left you have to wonder if it isn't the first team that makes a mistake is going to be the one who loses the ball game who can play error-free football from here on out third and nine giants shifting the defensive line pepper johnson showing blitz but he backs off into pass coverage and on third and nine smith makes the catch great move on hidden picks up a first down he left andy head and hung out to dry and turns it into a first down so instead of a punt they've got four more plays at least he's made a couple of those tonight here's a man with a bad knee in college missed most of his senior year a lot of his junior year and watch this move on andy hedden who's a fine athlete he's in there because of his athletic skill he just was mesmerized by it when you drop a defender to his knees without touching him when you do it just by moving your body and your legs in a way he's not expecting i think that's what these guys live for they call him their power runner he's pretty nifty first and ten washington at the 35. off the fake to smith going deep incomplete intended for sanders and back there double coverage williams and canard helping out and dorsey puts the hit on williams and again doug williams i'm so impressed with the way he he waits until the last second to throw the football he's taken a shot just about every time it's almost like he's not going to deliver it until he gets hit he had a lot of practice at tampa bay because the last second music came kind of early down there yeah on the second or third one a brilliant throw that time by williams good coverage in the giant secondary by williams it's this is championship football here in the first week of the season a lot of times you don't get it this early second and ten kelvin bryant is in there they send mcewen in motion bryant stays in the block williams has time and williams after the 40-yard line hits don warren the safety valve for a short game what you like to see the two linebackers both of them hammering your receiver making him pay that price keeping him short of the first down meanwhile you have the coverage you want deep by your cornerbacks and it has been good they've worked on williams all night long and but for the first mistake he has played pro bowl cornerback third and five washington from the 41. game tied at 13. monk comes in motion to sanders side monk stays in the block and the pass for clark who's beating his man off his fingertips he's gotten behind mark collins but incomplete [Applause] collins comes out of that limping and he was limping before but he was able to make the play here let's watch it again collins and sanders and collins missed one day of practice this past week with a sore knee that he hurt just slipping on the carpets and this there's no contact made but look at the throw look how good the throw was from williams and you know even though they have to punt here the redskins an effective drive they move it outside their own 40 when they start back inside their five and a bouncing snap and a block kick picked up by flynn of all guys he's used to this touchdown reasons with a block flynn picks it up and flynn is in again as he did last opening night against chicago a year ago a touchdown off a punt block bad snap set that sequence into motion i believe gary reasons the guy with the block gary reasons coming up the middle is the guy with the block but frank is right it was a bad snap mike scully i believe watch to the right of the center number 55 gary reasons takes it right off of cox's foot and flynn as hell said is indeed used to this and al can you believe you and i had lunch yesterday and sat and talked about tom flint a year ago against chicago in that opener off of block by as i recall eric howard flynn picked it up and went in and the giants have now scored 20 unanswered points after allegra's extra point to make it 20 to 13. again gary reasons playing it smart goes for the football and tom flynn the right man in the right place a monday night hero who can believe this up by seven new york one of roden's cowboys go head-to-head with their division rivals the phoenix cardinals on abc's monday night football the only way to kick off your week who's the man who did the snapping how bad can you feel huh yeah our spotter kelly hayes just walked outside the booth he said bobby beathard is outside on a pay phone maybe he's looking for a snapper they really have their problems and it's come back to haunt him tonight 14-yard line taken there by sanders who runs back a kick for the second time and he takes it after the 28. watch out gary reasons right here blocks this punt he's going to go up here but the personal protector is going to move to this side to block on this side and that's going to give reasons a straight shot into the punter the personal protector moves clear out of the blocking scheme and allows reasons that straight shot at the punter and you touched on a dan he didn't go up in the air hurling his body way up in the air he went right were where the ball was going to be when it came off the foot and he was perfect and that's how you also avoid the roughing the kicker penalty if you missed the ball redskins down by seven at their own 29-yard line first and ten williams caught at the 40-yard line coming back is sanders the crowd can't believe it and neither can heading and it's overruled i believe one official had a better view it hit the ground the umpire overrules the line judge and williams has no arguments after this stadium of over 35 000 knew that it was incomplete oh yeah good look at it there from behind clearly a one-hopper into ricky sanders who makes a heck of a nice play on it to make it look like a catch a good look it bounces about three or four inches short nice shortstop move there by ricky sanders looks like instant replay is going to take another look at it i or else maybe they have a problem with a clock let's see it'll be second down 10 9 40. right now it's showing 30 seconds what what happens normally as it goes back to 45 at the end of the prior play but since the prior play was in dispute it now restarts from 30. but no doubt that it's skipped to ricky sanders second down and 10 from the 28 yard line williams for clark can't make the catch and a flag is down in the backfield mark collins covering on the play they're going to go against the redskins illegal use of the hands they'll mark it off how far did that football go in the air and flat-footed he um leased that thing how far did doug williams launch the ball into a win he threw that football into a pretty brisk breeze the giant the wind here giant stadium moving from our hands a jam to the face number 73 offense 10 yards still second down mark may that's a major jam coming from a 300 pounder now there's a good look look at the flags on the top of the stadium and that's doug williams having to throw right into that a 20 mile an hour wind now that ball comes down at about the 16 yard line i think he launched that maybe from around his got around his 25 or so that's not a bad little all right here he is let's see if we can pick this up he's at the 22. this one that could have been caught that ball would have landed even inside the 15-yard line about 63 yards in the air into a 20-mile an hour win williams fires nearly picked off terry [Music] cannoy craig mcewan had gone deep as the redskins go to that play for the first time tonight and that that should have been intercepted doug williams is infatuated with the long ball as he has been his entire career but he's really taking some risk he's he's throwing the ball to people that are very well covered more often than not with the exception of williams i'm talking now about perry williams misplaying ricky sanders touchdown the giant secondary had decent coverage better than decent coverage those are also the calls to dan and you think on second down and about 20 they would have typically characteristically of joe gibbs and the redskins look for about half of it instead of all of it third and 20. monk in motion and over the middle for clark and he's hit by williams but he has the first down out at the 42-yard line so clark who started out brilliantly has been quiet though since the first quarter gets noisy again a big play here yes i'm great receiver williams began going for all of it as he had to now on third down sits in there he has plenty of time and he's big enough to look over the mess finds clark clark knows he's going to just get hammered by guys that outweigh by about 60 pounds concentrates gets the first down and perry williams really hurting so sheldon white takes his spot and he comes out to the near side now one on one with clark and monk goes in motion on first down from the 42. let's see if williams goes toward clark no he goes underneath out at the 46-yard line to the tight end don warren stopped by carson and johnson spotted at the 47 gain of about five it'll be second and five sheldon white the rookie they have brought in who now goes back out and williams comes in he is one of the fastest players if not the fastest player in the draft he's looked great defensively for the giants so he is tech back out [Applause] he didn't he didn't look so great that bill parcells couldn't wait to get him out that got out of there fast he's been the fastest getting back to the bench under eight minutes to play second and five williams hit by johnson loose ball live ball jim berg [Applause] this stadium is going to go bananas they love this guys give pepper martin a credit oh yeah pepper martin hit doug williams in the back and knock the ball loose pepper johnson i say pepper martin well he hit him too might have hit me too that was a gas house pepper johnson give him credit he beats joe jacoby and hits doug williams in the back you'll see johnson come in from the left of your screen he beats joe jacoby upfield doug holding the football for a long time it's hard to hold it that long and jim burt taking a page out of the george martin playbook heads for the end zone art taylor may not be here but heifer johnson carl banks andy hedden they are playing well if not over their heads they're certainly reaching for a higher level tonight they have played superb football [Applause] allegray and jim burke with not the longest legs in the nfl takes many steps to get to the end zone but here's a look at it at the top of your screen look at johnson spin to the outside and get around jacoby and watch these long legs turn to the end zone chop chop chop chop cubes and ohio state or southern california stanford that night nebraska and ucla college football premiere saturday on abc sports a dramatic turnaround the giants lead by 14 7 45 to play and the kickoff taken by oliphant and he's dropped out at the 27-yard line jim burt with the touchdown what about his most memorable moment in football my most memorable moment it's kind of corny but uh having my son at the super bowl and uh putting him on my shoulders and having him be there and uh it's just it was a great experience for me [Music] well that still might be number one but i think we've just seen number two he was running like he still had his son on his shoulder [Applause] the 27. washington first and ten 7 38 the play fourth quarter and everything going wrong for the redskins intended for timmy smith everything just a little out of sync when it starts to go wrong fraction here instant there [Applause] realizing what life is like as defending super bowl champions and in the blip high above giant stadium is getting a little cool right now yeah getting cool down here as well especially if you have a white jersey on real cold second and ten williams firing to a wide open month and he's down at the giant 45-yard line canard makes a stop so monk's been pretty silent tonight and he makes the catch here with 7 20 to go in the fourth well they call the right pass into the zone the giants back in their deep zone and art monk who's been there before finds that hollow spot and look at the way the skins are working the middle of the field terry canard over there way late to make the play and one thing about doug williams he's not shy about going along with the football first catch of the night for monk good for 28 first and 10 redskins at the giant 45. williams rolling going deep down the sideline and sanders is covered like a blanket collins staying with him on the other side williams had taken care of clark nobody to go to second down banks again coming on the blitz and he made a nice little move to protect his body outside here warren is trying to block him hits to the outside and there goes williams but watch warren hustle get back up and look at this move that's uh something to do with the discretion being the better part of valor there i think you got out of gears like that you got to know when to hold them and when to fold them [Applause] second and 10. mcewan pays the price the mic is right there and you all heard adrian white short of the first down by three stops 6 39 to play in the fourth adrian white's quite a missile himself to have him in there is every time they give you a play fake though he makes the tackle in the middle of the opposition's backfield i'm just looking at the scoreboard trying to figure out how the giants are winning 27 to 13. i think joe gibbs is probably trying to figure that out as well how how they have allowed this game to get away special teams mistake interceptions block kicks they've spread it around the odd place williams goes deep clark wants a flag he was covered by collins and williams can't believe he doesn't see a flag [Applause] well there was contact and there's no questioning the contact and keep in mind that the officials this year are going to be a little more lenient that's mark collins and gary clark well that's interference all the way folks it's almost a mugging i mean that's that's hard to imagine how they missed that one that is hard to believe that in this type of situation how they can possibly miss a guy wrapping his arm around the throat of a receiver on a catchable football and doug williams has every right to be incensed and just to refresh you if you don't know that's not the kind of play that's subject to review by the replay official a judgment call fourth and three redskins have to go for it and the pass is too high and the giants take over on downs intended for clark and if you're a fan that series of downs isn't going to sit with you any better than it's sitting with doug williams right now he's hot and justifiably so [Applause] news environmental alert the horrors of a polluted world could happen if we don't act soon watch burning questions the poisoning of america thursday [Music] some odd numbers in this one washington has dominated on the ground especially in the first half giants minus yardage negative yardage first half on the ground passing washington has a slight advantage there 36 more but turnovers four and two of them turned into touchdowns by the giants and there it is last year three quarters of the time teams with the fewer turnovers won the game so a pretty good indication and especially when two of those turnovers go into the end zone for you block punt and the fumble returned by bert giants have it back at the 38 yard line first and 10. morris will try to stay in bounds and does he is stopped by walton who wants to go for a piggyback ride as well second down al here's another number to try on we just saw joe morris carry the ball and pick up about a yard on that play that gives joe morris 11 carries for the ball game for three yards and are unofficials to that statistician behind us alex wallow pointed out that the giants only ran the ball two times in the third quarter now how do you figure that the giants are winning a football game where joe morris has rushed the ball 11 times for three yards for three yards and and nine and nine of those three as odd as it sounds was on the touchdown he's got four i guess we don't want to ship him out of a yard right i don't want to ruin that handsome point for average second and eight reverse emanuel takes it from morris sims is there to block and at least he gets himself in front of cook and it turns out to be a first down alpowitz makes the tackle but a good time for that call the redskins have got to be thinking the giants are going to go with ball control plays keep it on the ground run their basic offense and you come back with a reverse and it picks up big yardage redskins unhappy campers there go home next week to meet pittsburgh they've got pittsburgh and philadelphia at home their schedule much much harder and of course in the national football league what happens is if you finish first the year before they give you a real tough schedule if you finish last a really easy schedule for the giants with a huge advantage there but now they get to play the first daytime game at phoenix yeah right week four should be down to about 103 by then morris oh that's pretty to the 39 stop by okowicz i think of the giants winning this football game as they appear to be on their way to doing it's going to take some sort of a comeback by washington talking to phil sims down on the field before the ball game tonight and he just got this starry look in his eyes when he just started talking about what it would mean to this team to win after what happened to them earlier this week without a wilbur marshall really devastated by what happened to lawrence taylor and his suspension for drug use for them to win this ball game against the defending super bowl champion has got to make a statement as to how good the giants are going to be in 88 second in inches morris and a first down and again the giants coming into tonight's game with basically not a lot to lose because if they won the game hey bonafide super bowl contenders even had they lost would at least look good they could have said well you know we're going to probably get taylor back we'll definitely get marshall back banks will be stronger next week and with the easy schedule how often we see it in sports though with the adversity the loss not only of lawrence taylor the lack of leonard marshall tonight the two best pass rushers all of a sudden you're seeing a carl banks who has not been even in camp that long just practiced about three days he's playing right at pro bowl form dorsey's been spectacular as as eric howard and to win it the way they are going to win this game too down by 13. and looking terrible in the first quarter and not very good overall in the first half morris on first down and they're just chewing up the clock now which is down to three minutes and the redskins want to take a timeout because the giants have been working on the clock and so washington has to take a timeout alvin walton limping off wilbur marshall that time watch him come up the middle on the blitz and go after phil simpson he's going to pass up the ball carrier and go after sims wilbur you're supposed to get the guy with the ball but i guess at this stage of the ball game if you get a shot on the other team's quarterback why not take it next week first time ever for a regular season game in arizona sun devil stadium in tempe is the site the dallas cowboys who dropped one to pittsburgh yesterday by three take on the phoenix cardinals who were stymied by two tremendous goal line stands by cincinnati yesterday eight o'clock eastern time next week you're going to be able to say phoenix dan well yeah i pretty well conditioned myself if you lived in st louis you saw it coming for two years i mean the ultimatum was made either build a new stadium or we're going to leave and in essence the people of st louis said well fine go ahead and leave it it was not a situation of the city of st louis clinging to bill bidwell's leg when he left town with his football team second down and nine giants in the 30-yard line morris and he just wants to stay in bounds and he does so that's why he goes down at the 28-yard line third down and again the redskins have to take a timeout so they're spending their timeouts on defense well before the two-minute warning 250 to play in the fourth quarter big weekend coming up here on abc college football now in full swing and a couple of games for you regionally check your local listings in the eastern half of the country syracuse against ohio state in the western half the trojans and heisman candidate rodney pete take on the stanford cardinal beginning at 3 30 eastern and you'll be there you'll be there you'll be home nebraska taking on ucla saturday night at eight eastern from the rose bowl and that ought to be a beauty bruins coming off a big win over san diego state a big win in the sense that they were expected to win big and they did nebraska what ranked number two coming in by a lot of polls and that certainly had to be helped with the miami's win over florida state you take a look at another heisman hopeful in that one and troy aikman the ucla quarterback phil sims didn't win any heismans he played it too small a school moorhead state but he's won a super bowl trophy doug williams was like fourth in the heisman balloting his senior year at grambling i believe phil sims the first pick of general manager george young who's done such a great job here with the giants building this team mostly from the draft he was the first pick for morehead state and everyone says who's he and where's he from but here it is ten years later he's still around the super bowl mvp where he was absolutely flawless a couple of years ago through so many injuries arriving at provo form on third and seven joe morris is stopped at the 27-yard line the redskins do not have a timeout they used one earlier and two in this series grant makes the tackle and the giants can just watch more of the clock tick down and this will take us right to the two minute warning because the 45 second clock is slightly behind the game clock so we'll go right down to two minutes we've seen this before where a team would have had to run a play under the old 32nd clock but because of the 45 seconds clock that's in effect this year they've been allowed to run it down to the two-minute warning it's a a little bit of a strange quirk in that new rule that lets the team with the lead have to you know they can run one less play you know games average three hours in one minute in a few seconds there's george right there young what a philosopher quite an intellect a couple of masters degrees in education he picks the player he believes in them and he there's tim mara congratulating george maybe a little prematurely but i don't think so neither do i two minute warning frank who was it who started the game by saying how can the giants be favored by two and a half he's bigger than me yeah he's bigger than me too i seem to remember you thinking i agree with you al i seem to remember you saying that well what a sh what a short memory you have i met the san francisco giants here's the plays that turned this game around the washington redskins snapping the football back scully with the low snap to cox and then gary reasons with the block and this guy has been there before flynn that's number one we'll show you number two in a minute it's the giants on the fourth down now fourth and seven looking for the first down which would in effect end the game but no moak can't make the catch and they'll turn it over on downs now to washington without a time after the redskins remaining now here's the one i like not so much because it happens to doug williams but the second part of it is pepper johnson coming in william does not even have a clue that he's there the ball is free and here comes the speedster jim burke from nose tackle and he turns it on doesn't look like his back spasms are bothering him here this is a guy who went all the way through training camp without any problems at all with his back and then right before their final preseason game with the browns had a recurrence very discouraged and really has not played all that much tonight eric howard doing most of the work and nose tackle but jim burt was there when it counted williams for a first down and trying to get out of bounds but not able to as sanders the giants did a great job that time making sure collins amongst them that he stayed inbound skins can't stop the clock they're always they're talking that over the defensive puddle don't let him out don't let him get to the outside of you if you're a cornerback you know you got protection inside keep him in bounds williams who is hobbling you can notice that on the drop to brian he's got to get out of bounds and he does it the 48 and that'll stop the clock yes you can see doug williams notice noticeably limping the brace on his left knee and keep in mind when you see doug williams limp jay schroeder is now a los angeles raider the executive producer of abc's monday night football jeff mason our producer tonight ken wolf our director craig janoff halftime producer john mcginnis halftime associate producer emily deutsch our technical director joe associate director rob beiner second down and three from the 48-yard line as doug williams takes a short drop goes to the side and throws it out of bounds so technical manager gary ricketts unit manager at mckenna telecommunications manager margaret covey bruce clark and joe castellano the assistant for the producer research and information steve hurt computer stats markamento our statistician up here george hill with an assist from alex walla who did anything he could to get into the ballpark tonight and our spotter malibu kelly hayes kathy and regis here earlier [Applause] the whole game well they went national day i had to say something that's right i first met regis back in 71 in st louis he had a he had an am show in st louis when i first came to town your first tv show correct third and three from the 48-yard line williams has it knocked down george martin there he is unheralded and almost unannounced last year at the end of the season he became the man who has played in more games in that uniform than any other george martin 186th tonight i'm surprised he didn't intercept it george martin's hand up in the air this guy has made a career out of being around the football i i had the privilege of being there at least twice i know of that george intercepted a pass and locked off with it he had a lot of years against him didn't he man oh yeah i played against george probably seven or eight years sensational football player and even a better human being boris and three and the limping williams hit kelvin bryant he has enough for the first down to the 46-yard line keeps on kicking they can't stop it with a minute to play 27 to 13 giants with 27 unanswered points don't look for the draw here or the cross puck to the far side sanders is out of bounds stopping the clock with 45 seconds first down at the 34. [Music] i wonder yeah i was just thinking the same thing will that make a comeback oh please yeah mercifully let it die oh merciful goodness hey the mood that parcells have been in this week i wouldn't want to be the one who tried it no you might be eating it not in the night game anyway better not be sean landeta he did come up with that wonderful play getting it out of bounds inside the one [Applause] 34 yard line williams pressured in williams oh my gosh i mean this you know it comes a point in time where you have to look at at the ends and the means and whether one justifies the other start thinking next sunday i mean doug williams just got bent like a pretzel on that play sheldon white we talked about him a moment ago young rookie out of miami of ohio that third round draft pick and he is some kind of hitter he has great speed and a 4.28 for the 40. fastest in at least it was blocked by bledsoe another counting combine second and ten [Applause] look out pressure from behind but he gets it off the sanders down to the 23 yard line i'll do this very softly all right here's the end go this telecast is presented by the authority of the national football league it is intended for the private use of our audience go ahead al you keep going any public case any rebroadcast or any other use of this telecast without the express written consent of the national football league is correctly prohibited and that's the hat gets you a little music to play under that yeah a little jingle killing me softly with kindness this is this football game has been anything but soft tonight the hot whirlpool may have a line for the guys waiting to get into tomorrow extremely physical game between the redskins and the giants and an amazing turnaround the ugly monster changed locker rooms at halftime [Applause] second and six williams for brian and it ain't over yet as calvin bryant scores and that comes with just 11 seconds remaining playoff tiebreakers [Applause] plenty of time good protection and brian who is a great receiver out of the backfield he was bad as well as a gifted runner in the usfl three years with the stars little circle pattern williams hits him right in stride andy hedden had the coverage initially and you can see andy lost his balance a little bit back in the secondary and wasn't able to come in and close on the ball low miller's extra point is good and his next move or cox's depending on who kicks off will be an onside kick now would you try the onside kick here al or or would you go ahead and kick a 11 seconds and no timeouts and again it starts on the kickoff when the ball is touched by the receiving team where the case could be here the the kicking team if they recover the onside kick and if they do recover they'll have time for one play and all the sure-handed possibilities in there maybe two maybe two maybe two all the 20s and 30 numbers receiver types ball handling types some of the people up front for the giants right now will include ingram flynn moax in there here's lionel manuel now how often will you see lionel manuel on the kick return team canard is also there and they have otis anderson in there well quite simply what you do is you take the 10 people and put them up there the 10 best pairs of hands on your football team where's jim berton george put george martin up there the ball come right to him i'll guarantee you [Applause] ah the suspense of it all so low miller it has to go to the 45 now and the kick actually comes to the 30-yard line and taken there by kenny hill and he just runs out of bounds with it and that'll do it giants all they were concerned about was maintaining possession kind of an odd attempt there by low middle i'm not quite sure i understand what he was doing boy the special teams coach will go crazy because that'll go into the books as a negative yardage kickoff return i'm not sure that's quite what they had in mind yeah what what in the world is that a 24 yard i don't know if you're going to do that you want to get it up there high enough where you get your men down under it as it turned out al you made the wrong choice kenny hill doing the right thing they'll try to rest it from sims here this will do it and the giants make a statement super bowl jams two years ago in the seller last year they became the first team in history to win a super bowl one year and finish last the next and the giants have told the nation tonight we are back and the winning on opening day troubles for defending super bowl champ continue we showed you those graphics early about how tough it is to win on opening day when you've won the previous super bowl and the redskins unfortunately just pad that statistic a little more well to latakia next monday al michaels with frank gifford dan deardorff saying good night from giant stadium in east rutherford new jersey where the giants beat washington 27 to 20. and this abc sports exclusive has been brought to you by michelob
