[Music] in modern times nobody has monopolized NASCAR racing like Bill Elliott he has raced around this season faster than a person throwing double sixes winning nine including two of the four most important spaces on the board win three and you amass a bonus portion of 1 million his first move in this quest began in February a month he dominated winning the pole his qualifying race and the Daytona 500 he had begun to build him an awfully and the other players could see Elliott was taking this game seriously the bankers activity the Elliott's already reinvesting for the next race and spaced on the million dollar board the world's fastest break back Talladega with the power that ownership of all the railroads and utilities bring Phil is blasting away again then there was this a temporary derailment a simple broken oil line bill spends two laps in the pits but he comes out smoking too miraculously he makes up the lost time without the aid of yellows Alabama Avenue is paved with success to his second win of the designated four crown jewel races is worth $100,000 a walk along the boardwalk next the contest revolves to Charlotte the world 600 only may already he's on the brink of banking one Darry continues with witless exhibition of speed again the pool but there would be no North Carolina Avenue to Victory Lane fill League building valuable points but the brakes just didn't go his way as a matter of fact they went completely away soon it was Park Place city for the Elliotts temporarily parked behind the fifth wall the chin for the Winston million would have to wait until another day bill has called it the worst week of his life ironically his closest pursuer endpoints Darrell Waltrip topped off the biggest weekend of his career with his only win so far this year now that day is here time to roll the dice again will Bill Elliott Pat's go and earn the Winston million the Darlington International Raceway and we are very proud to present to you the 36th running of this fabled old race at the southern 500 from Darlington South Carolina the weather is 82 degrees but that's not the big story it's very hot and muggy and reigneth and threatening all week long the road will be joining me in the booth this afternoon you know when you wander around the grounds here at Darlington you just can't help but hear the echoes of names like fireball Roberts and red Byron but coming to this race today there's been one name on the lips of everybody and that's Elliott indeed Larry Elliott is the new superstar in the grand national circuit we've talked a lot about his run for the million dollar bonus but there's a couple of issues that Elliott will have to deal with today one the Winston Cup grand national championship where he's ahead of his arch rival Darrell Waltrip by only 138 points so he's been twixt in between on that issue does he run for the million does he hold back and conserve and hopefully gain enough points to go for the first grand national championship he's ever taken down Jack I also think that is both ironic and fitting that he starts in the front row next to a guy that he grew up watching you could call David Pearson mr. Darlington 10 victories here at this famed old racetrack three of them in the southern 500 and what's neat about that is Bill Elliott when he was growing up said that his absolute idol in racing was none other than David Pearson well joining us in the pits this week will be the editor of stock car racing magazine dick Berggren and he is down in the pit area where the Elliott's are holding shop right now and they've had a different approach to the race this week they sure have larry has been very calm in the Elliott pit all week in fact they've had a separate garage area guarded by uniformed armed police officers press access has been very limited but don't confuse this calm with disinterest this team means to win the southern 500 the Winston million and go on to win the Winston championship and on the backstretch with another group of stars is Jerry punch a Motorsports Hall of Fame here on the backstretch names like Floyd Carter Yarborough Allison and penny many more are pitting a lot of activity here from the back straightaway Larry Thank You Jerry well the program has been picked up just a little bit because hurricane Elena plus a lot of local bad weather this week is kind of bothering the teams right now so we're going to with the row assignments Bill Elliott sipped on the poll not a brand new track record on the outside the legendary David Pearson in row number two Benny Parsons on the inside and Joe Ruttman bad luck Joe Ruttman on the outside row number three the fifth and sixth position Dillon on last week's winner and Harrigan on the outside the fourth row Darrell Waltrip and Tim Richmond out of Ohio the fifth row Terry Labonte defending champion and Greg sacks winners Daytona and in lemons in 12th position great stats and they go Ricky Rudd in row six followed by Tommie Ellis row number seven Phil Parsons and Rusty Wallace row number eight they'll be of course 40 car starting this race Morgan Shepherd getting one of his infrequent grand national rides followed by Buddy Baker Geoff Bodine Lake speed the tenth row Ron Bouchard Bobby Hillin jr. eleventh row Neil Bonnett Cale Yarborough row number 12 Bobby Allison and Richard Petty the thirteenth row Kyle Petty and the legendary AJ point row number fourteen Dave Park isn't Tommy Huston out of the late-model sportsman ranks the 15th row Pancho Carter and Trevor boys row number 16 HB Bailey and Ken Schrader the green flag is anticipated this past five by the front stretch the 1985 southern 500 is underway [Music] [Music] the entire field of 40 cars passes under Harold kinder arounds turn one and turn two no attendance at this point of the race this is a treacherous racetrack become a customer see the red and white number nine of Bill Elliott is the leader that is Benny Parsons are broadcasting colleague right now running in second position [Music] hundred and ninety seven and a half miles to go Jack Larry there's the guy that's going for the million dollars and he's broken from the point to leave this event by several car links over Benny Parsons who drives in a Chevrolet there you see the separation as they enter turn three but look out for number three they learn [Music] trying to challenge on Benny Parsons as they come across the stripe now remember the significance of this racetrack not only Speedway is constructed way back in 1950 but the myth alleged them how treacherous this place can be is no myth this is a racetrack that can jump up and bite you at any time the day and Earnhardt who was underneath Benny Earnhardt took a move down on the inside a very calculated water they were going into turn I sufficiently to kill enough proof to get back in racing speed but it may be the second dropping Parsons back to third and here's a move on the inside by Tim Richmond as they came across describe for a back Marc right now he's trying to find a way around darrell waltrip the man who won so many races including yes in the past decade what do you think Larry so far things have gone pretty much as we had expected with Earnhardt making a move to the front Elliott dominating at least the first three left positions and they round out of turn four you see the top three and there's fourth fifth sixth seventh and eighth position doing battle the first interesting moment will come you've been win and it looks like it might happen Earnhardt catches Bill Elliott with all this distance to go in this race will fill Elliott simply move over and let they all get by as we saw last week when dear wants to leave he'll go to any lengths to get it at anytime but you got to remember this is Darlington and what a great shot from inside of Benny Parsons car in third position there you see him trailing Dale Earnhardt ernet looks to me if he may be just a tad loose as he comes out of the corners there's down the front straightaway see how quick the stripes go by you high-speed and then you got to go into that narrow corner and turn one [Music] Benny Parsons Chevrolet the u.s. tobacco Copenhagen Chevrolet who started in third position giving you these tremendous shots looking out the back window down the backstretch you can see Parsons has an advantage over the fourth fifth sixth and seventh place running cars as they scoot dude turns three and turns four of the treacherous Darlington the International Raceway as you look in the back there the car that's first on the point as we look out of Benny Parsons window rear view window is David Pearson he faded quickly after starting on the pole position and being relegated back report that he's got his hands full there's the battle for fourth fifth and six actually yeah fourth fifth and six that's Pearson David and David Pearson dropping off the outside pole there's Walter trying to go up on the rear bumper and you're going to go to the inside Larry indeed he is in turn three side by side David makes way for Darren and here comes Tim Richmond sneaking up there and getting their feet close to David and following through with Joe Ruttman that's a Joe Ruttman in the buldge number four card Harry Gant getting sideways coming off turn number four still fighting to get it back you know what sucks up here you've got to not only race the competition but the racetrack as well you've got where you make those passes that's precisely what darrell waltrip Tim Richmond and Joe Ruttman did when they appropriated that position held by David Pearson they just look for the spot man cap one point three six six miles around and they look at Darrell Waltrip running easily in the top five this race equates out to three hundred and sixty-seven laps that's 500 miles here at the 1985 southern 500 you see Dale Earnhardt in the Wrangler sunshine yellow and Wrangler Jean blue number three closing in on Bill Elliott Elliott has led this race since the drop of the green flag Morgan Shepherd whom a lot of people had some positive sentiments about in regards to running well in this race Jack is in the pits that's a big disappointment Bobby Hawkins has brought out a brand new car some new machinery they hope that they could take a guy like Morgan Shepherd who's run so well at Darlington and post a top position finish tonight today there's Sheppard up in the upper right but it's not going to be his day in the 36 southern 500 actually that's Benny's little brother in the back there Ricky David Pearson and Saxon then built hearts what's happening and I'm wondering Larry if Pearson is dropping dramatically off the face after a fine qualifying David Pearson qualified at all skaar Pearson right now is being posted at tenth position after starting on the outside of Bill Elliott in a twin for two of course the full fitting Cara Bill Elliott this feat was 150 6.6 miles an hour Rusty Wallace you see darting toward that outside cement coming off of turn number four and now we've got what we thought was coming up on contest for the lead now watch this battle Larry we've been watching as it goes around the racetrack and Elliott seems stronger in this particular area where we're in turns three and four Earnhardt seems to get the jump coming out of the corner who all race traffic make them into play but he's taking a look to the inside lap after lap it looks like her heart [Music] makes a liar out of me now we're going to go to the high side and just crawls all over the rear bumper brings up some interesting race strategy that no other race driver in the history of automobile racing have ever faced does Bill Elliott concerning what's at stake move over and let Dale go by I don't think so you're looking at two tough race drivers right they're the new breed taking over here [Music] he sees a million dollars in his rearview mirror and when you take a look at they learn out he doesn't care for say it five dollars to win and we cannot overemphasize earn RUC smoking the right rear that time really whistling her into number one we can't over up the side how much every single lamp you are over the edge here at Darlington it's only a two-lane racetrack at best Earnhardt is just climbing all over the number nine he goes to the inside and look at that now I'll tell you what happened actually Elliott let him get by he saw the traffic and said look if you're gonna run this loose I'm gonna give you the I've got too much at stake and we're rolling he was in a point of the racetrack where the guy on the outside normally has to make way because of the way this particular racetrack is shaped and that's something you'd have to do the matter of you running for one a problem with Morgan Shepherd Larry is that his car is overheating who says they can't fix it they're certainly going to have to bring it in this is no way to start [Music] Bill Elliott second Benny Parsons third Richmond is for Walter this myth Joe Ruttman is in sixth Harry gana seventh Terry Labonte the champion has moved up to a tricky rut night David Pearson 10th grade sax 11th Bill Parcells 1215 Lake speed 14 Jeff bodean somewhat of a disappointing 15th at this point of the race but it's early there goes Dale around punch O'Connor they use that champion and David Pearson the dead contact with another racecar and slows significantly the high spot side of the Speedway well you can see the wheel marks to cool on the side of that car that's something you don't want to get engineer a job then he'll have to come to the pits for service by his son Nellie and I think go by in the inside diggin for safety that was somewhat of a close call for the man going after the mage here's where you begin to talk to yourself David at the tail end of his career and now he's got to come down into the pit hit road area and it's a tough break for Pearson because he wanted to run very well here at Darlington today David Pearson have qualified so well the last time he won here at Darlington was way back in 1980 he won the trans 500 David Pearson the man who many people have called mr. Darlington is out of the 1985 southern five a major crash here at the Darlington International Raceway that is bill Parsons sitting silently on the inside of turn number four Phil and Rusty Wallace were the two principals involved in this they were battling for 12th and 13th positions bill Parsons the younger brother of Benny Parsons who worked with us yesterday up here in the booth no movement yet from the car both Phil and Rusty made hard wall contact on the outside of turn number four a lot of debris on the racetrack no other cars at this point seemingly involved but you can see some liquid draining from underneath Bill's number 66 skull bandage Chevrolet Hill started this race in 13th position sitting on the outside I'm guessing that as Rusty Wallace that there is still some flame coming from underneath the engine compartment of that car that's just a guess another shot of rustic sitting silently outside of turn number four here's what's at what happened as they came off turn number four you could see they both got together in the high side there looked almost like a rear ender and from the looks of the skid marks further on back they were just wedged up there in that old treacherous Darlington high side but watch the defensive driving there by well actually it was Neil Bonnett and Richard Petty they went to the inside and got by well good news from the pit area Rusty Wallace whose car you're looking at right now is out of the car I'm parently in good shape and he's with our dick Berggren right now very good news rusty you all right yeah I'm fine everything just fine there's no problem there's just uh you know NASCAR's trying to get Phil Parsons in deihi putting the term real hard and hit her to the hood David Pearson about knocked them both out of the race and this tire was rubbing the right front real good real bad I seen it the whole time just kept running to find it blew out and took me out with you know so I was just a victim of circumstances and though earlier date NASCAR doesn't take it easy you know if there's any tires rubbin come on in but evidently myself out himself and so it's a that's really upsetting trying to run as good as we're running and this happened and that was in the driver's meeting all the drivers were told it was a white flag come right in don't make any guesses back to you Larry well dick yesterday afternoon late rusty was practicing with Darrell Waltrip and running competitively with him doing very well they had high hopes for this race more good news our other print reporter Jerry punch and Jerry happy to take it down to you because you are with Phil Parsons Jer Phil Parsons a a wild ride up and turn for first of all are you okay yeah I'm fine here what happened up there well I don't know I got interested you know passing for a position and I think I think I cut the right front tire down because all of a sudden it popped and the thing just turned right so how did I hope rusty missed me I couldn't really tell but the thing hit the wall pretty good shot a lot of flames and a lot of debris they took the cars pretty well used up five will be for this race anyway well Phil Parsons down of it but he's okay there was a very spectacular moment there and some heart Stoppers for those of us who know them and it's good to see both of those guys walking around and talking in good fashion Jack anytime that you see one like that but we've got a lot going on here at Darlington International Raceway the 36th annual southern 500 we'll be back with more in a moment [Music] ten time Darlington winner David Pearson has parked the four David what put you out well a blue engine or something for some I'm sure what was the engine load but you know I hate to say it but kind of halfway lad this one here did something happen here because there seemed like every time we run this motor don't ever run real good or something so but it just I don't know David you started upfront beside Bill Elliott you had a chance popular to gauge his strength is he is strong with everyone expected early on he is strong no doubt about it but there again I can't really compare him with my car because I said my car I hadn't been running up straightaway too good its handling perfect through the corners I got that fact qualifying everything at the paper clocking cars to the part that I was going through the corner faster that even build it but I don't know what it is it just didn't get it to go on up straightaway well a silver fox parks it here at Darlington back upstairs the last win for David Pearson and grand national competition was here at Darlington in April of 1980 and one of the guys that we've had an opportunity to talk to today has been Hill was very close to that accident indeed he was Cale Yarborough this is Jack arute and ESPN control you had a good bird's-eye view of that crash didn't you you started way in the back of the back kale and you've started again to try and make your way to the front but somewhat cautiously how do you assess your chances to get to the front right now when you check in the rearview mirror on this restart you're going to see million-dollar bill elliott your thoughts on him well we'll stay in contact with you and good luck to the day there is Cale Yarborough following Dale Earnhardt right now officially 27 laps of it completed Cale is shown in third position the top six are beau dying Earnhardt Yarborough Elliott Richmond Waltrip and Benny Parsons and let me tell you why that happened that was a very fast pit work by Jeff Bodine and some of the others they ducked in took advantage of that caution period and got back out that's real important in a place like Darlington okay the southern 500 continues these drivers run in the entire trash becomes the most famous name that never great American rate fetch the 1985 version of the southern 500 spot - here on ESPN still running under caution flag where Rusty Wallace and Phil Parsons were involved in a spectacular turn number four both drivers a okay top six Bodine Earnhardt and Cale Yarborough the first three four through six Elliott Richmond and Waltrip and by the way you'll see a EJ boy super tech running up to the top he has lost a lot more lost a lap underneath all the shekinah pit stops in the confusion here of the serious yellow flag dick Berggren is that down in the pit area well unfortunately Larry we've got just a tad of rain down here it doesn't look like a serious situation just a heavy dark cloud passing over the top of us right now and her feeling just a little bit of showers Ronny Bouchard meanwhile has made a couple of unscheduled pit stops he's having car problems they're gonna try to get him squared away so that he can get back in the race and become competitive 500 miles remember 250 miles on a one mile oval is a hundred and eighty three laps so Ernie and Dan Kelly had done the pit area that's got to be on the front of their minds perhaps more than any other crew here although everybody wants to win this race the sentiment this week case your interest it is everybody said you know we'd like to see Elliott win he's come this far but we are all here to win the race we're not going to give it to him but you know that's kind of a contrast to because for a lot of these drivers they need to win this race or a race very shortly before the end of the Winston Cup in order to get some more money from their sponsors because Eliot has dominated so much throughout the season so on one hand they hope bill wins on the other like a Yarborough and urn are the Walter to win the boost the ante and a remember the cars on the outside row will be the cars on the lead lap headed up by Jeff Conine the Levi's five cars on the inside including a J Floyd super Texan they give more Oldsmobile number 14 is at least one lap down Morgan Shepherd right there in front on the point he lost several laps in the pits outside row on the lead lap getting ready for a restart yeah there is a J point look at this guy who runs in this race as a rookie after all races winning stock car races and AJ is definitely off the pace green flag well they said AJ would be very the stars here because the the gearbox very nicely and he's taken the lead there's Earnhardt and Yarborough now [Music] Dale earnheardt cale yarborough Road I'm still looking for his first win of 1985 [Music] I tried that move to the inside again that he moving laughs before the question there you can see him waving inside the khari with waving to Cale Yarborough he wasn't badly out of shape that he looked glued nose to tail and they round out of two and get ready for the run down the backstretch once again yah girl looks to the inside is he going for second position so many times here at Darlington International Raceway beginning to strut his stuff but that seems a [Music] there is at the tail end and he's starting to quote [Music] the fastest car seemingly the best setup and right now her heart Yarbrough and our camera car the Copenhagen Chevrolet of Benny Parsons let's watch him as he works this quarter see what you got to look for you to the outside check out Tim Richmond and directly Walter sneak-a-peek to the high side forgotten make sure that whatever [Music] not only in front but in behind you as well because you've got a lot of traffic you've got to get that with Richmond Lesly good thing the new grads down there bringing up two hundred sixty-five hundred and seventy miles an hour about then you slow down going turn three [Music] maybe slow down 235 140 we accelerate coming out of turn number four 33 seconds average feet above 150 miles an hour you know Larry a lot of the drivers are doing signaling from inside when they come across the start-finish they're sticking their hand outside the window there is rain - Harold kinder the starter that there's rain on the racetrack and they're questioning why why no caution Eliott as we continue to watch Benny Parsons and his progress is the yellow flag is out the yellow flag has come out we are guessing it is because of inclement weather the southern 5 temporarily hold it here Betty Parsons holding up his hands just thing with the drivers behind exactly he wanted everybody to slow down hand signals are very important in Grand National racing you don't have brake lights or turn signals so the best thing you can do is use your hands to let everybody else know what's going on especially kind of a semi teammate like Harry Gant who runs our skulls part of the US tobacco brigade okay 35 laps are down we are a long ways from halfway as we told you 183 laps would make up the half way distance many persons by the way has dropped way down on for the racetrack Betty is coming in I believe this time around apparently something just perfect to his liking as he sits behind the steering wheel in Parsons is coming into the [Music] the Cal sign there the big ball that greets all the drivers at most racetracks that they race here in the grand national circuit and Benny Parsons is looking toward clip champion and the rest of the crew as he comes to a stop what a great balloon what a great view this is a drivers eye view of a normal pit stop so you get your windshield wash to work on that he think Benny leans over it takes a quick drink trying to keep himself getting dehydrated in the on the outside of the car let's take a look they've taken a check on the tires exchange the left side rubber giving him a little bit of fuel and he's back but check the windshield look at its he's stopping at the end of pit road and saying look and he's stopping in front of Bill and saying I need a quick wipe he couldn't say oh somebody from bill Elliott's crew during journey much duty very interesting inside too they come Grand Nationals car racing Benny Parsons is now working back up to speed but it will be a reduced speed as we under caution flag the best information that we have right now is that this race has been temporarily slowed down because of its fun of others [Music] still very early in the 1985 southern 500 Bill Elliott the minute everybody's been talking about runs in third place and he runs in a strong third place the caution flag by the way is going to go away and about a half a lap Justin we're seeing raindrops in the window matter of fact has peeked through the crowd one more time there's the guy directly in front of him running in second position that of course is Cale Yarborough Yarborough the Nemesis of actually Eliot but look who's directly in front of him Pancho Carter Indy 500 pole-sitter a lap down trying to get it back on the inside they are leading this 36th annual southern 500 HP Bailey in the red white number 36 he caught a glimpse of any verse well and Texan trying to make it like this time around trying to maintain some continuity till they can find a hole and makes very nicely the dirt wad and begins to pull away [Music] like be a little careful here after a green flag a resumption of the race after rain because [Music] were asking through hand signals the NASCAR official came why are we still racing so probably feels [Music] what a tremendous job Eddie vision for yourself if you were driving down a highway made a left-hand turn and went into an alley at about 75 miles an hour you know [Music] every day Larry particularly at Darlington because this racetrack is so unusual in this configuration [Music] why but because of the banking the length of it just here comes Elliott by the way looking to the inside of Yarborough there are holding useful Lane here a plane to see if it was going to be useful to get around cale yarborough for that second position [Music] he has brought a very heady race stayed out of trouble but stayed in that front trio of three [Music] a little bit [Music] exactly he wants to get around yard to run away and hide he knows the weather is threatening and he wants to be in a position where he can pass this race is stopped at halfway mandating at that point could be comfy the cries downstairs very nicely that is a classic Darlington that's the maneuver you have to execute just perfectly that's exactly what Elliot at Darlington marcin's Earnhardt Walter Burke Elliott and what trans outraces Pearson Alison petty Gannett maker both events [Music] also while you take a look at what was racing up front let's look a couple of laps ago you want to see some Benny Parsons on the outside trying to gathered and see him sawing the wheel stay off the concrete barrier around the in front of three or four cars get around Lake speed and there goes Dave Marcus but he gathers it back in and that's how quickly to lose a couple of spots here a little miscue he had jacking on this racetrack sometimes like we saw a couple weeks ago and Cale Yarborough a slugging away at the Michigan International Speedway without Gail handling brew you can stay in the throttle the place like fishing put it down you just gotta get into the race the orientation meeting that's the one point that they hammered home all day [Music] 367 lat all come out in the wash in the end but if you try to battle this racetrack and run on the ragged edge you're not going to be around [Music] there's ernhardt a good run for Dale Earnhardt about this card Larry Willie Nelson [Music] our mate we'll talk about that a little bit later with sixth seventh and eighth any of a driver is Waltrip is he may also be running exactly the Torres pays that Bill Elliott is capable of setting so Walter the jr. Johnson may well [Music] that mean the race if they want and be in a position where they can charge the last half with his race B is leading up 183 are leading up the left three sixes well so far Walter piranhas reminiscent of the back in about sixth and seventh position let things spin out wait until past the halfway mark and then begin to chip away at the competition err again of course the defending winner of this race and won the southern 500 a gold at every stop legends doctor racing legends in terms of the division in terms of racetracks and races but the southern 500 boy things have really tightened up in that battle for the third position cale yarborough holds third right behind him then Tim Richmond Darrell Waltrip and Harry Gant like a giant freight train they Rumble down that backstretch each of them looking for a miscue by Walter Walter up up out of Richmond now to see if he'll make a miscue but I looked at the inside [Music] he's keeping pace with Dale Bernard but Yarborough has been but these drivers want to feel each other out especially around this course making a look the Yarborough tends to run a little and boudin does that battle for third [Music] the caution comes out you want to make sure you've got a clean shot back into the pits and we'll show you a little bit more about [Music] every spot becomes critical you've got a go form you got to attack them of course these drivers have become accustomed that in racing in the 1980s eighteen seventies and grand aspirations [Music] watch those guys they look like a bunch of precision flying fighter pilots as they circuit around this race dying fans off hardy surely he does time and he takes over third position and really trying to follow you up there Walter - [Music] jail gives him about three quarters in a lane and there may be enough we'll see what happens they come off a side by side you're not supposed to do that coming out of turn two but they did walk by the we go into three not supposed to do it there either and y'all go back down he has curious Lane when they go into turn number three that'll take your brother 52 laps have been completed Darryl Wolcott we looking at there is Bill Elliott who runs comfortably behind that man right there the blue and yellow regular car number three up Dale Earnhardt the 1985 southern 500 right now Bill Elliott Ness quest for a million is taking a back seat to this Dale Earnhardt there you see him in the first yellow car the number 51 car today is being good advice Racing Ford Yarborough goes around to the outside maybe 30 car lengths 25 car legs behind her [Music] in the race jacket looks like that Bernhardt is putting it to Elliot well the Chevrolet very nicely they're actually Elliott the way you should have laid it out but check this battle out looks like Greg sacks hit the wall Miller racing machine of Drake Sachs Gary Nelson by the way was on hand this way firecracker race at Daytona done the racing world I mean really stunned the racing world not going to be in a perfectly today because he's losing laughs you can see what's left on the right front assembly of that race car is dragging on the ground brake sacks coming into the pits and dick durbin is standing by and perhaps dick can update us on the situation with Greg sacks with the right side deck take a look at it a little bit and see if they can nurse this thing into submission what this is not a racetrack that you want to have to struggle with [Music] tow-in or the Casper the camper is out this place is just tough enough when the car can win perfectly I wouldn't want to keep increase taxes position for the rest of this event you know Jack you do that before the race starts with mathematics and strings and mirrors and all these fancy Dan 1985 style mathematics some of them computerized to get into a race to get an eyeball in well that's the old school but sometimes it's effective they're still working there but Dale Earnhardt is working well out on the racetrack take a look Earnhardt it's the yellow flag Dale Earnhardt saw that yellow flag I guess before any of us did better back I think he moved over very gentlemanly gesture to lick slit here the NASCAR radios each of these crew members down they monitored his Harry Gant falls into the pit and I they are built as away say okay Harold foot Richard Childress went back and there's a good stop by Harry Gant but as we were saying Richard Childers probably throw him back out of the throttle cautions coming on let's see staying on right-side rubber not reason for the yellow debris from the Greeks accidents acts by the way is back out of the race track but the case when something like this occurs expect him to possibly come in particularly yellow flag now you slow the field down that will give all the safety people around the to walk over here comes our leader into the bears going to walk up and get the debris off the Speedway let's see what they do to Eliot's car okay they're gonna change the left side tire watch in the monitor and see if there's any movement inside the race car by crew members because that would be significant they're changing the handling they haven't done that they just put on tires and a full load of fuel but ending let's see it's not over yet her heart is accelerating told bill that bill heading up for the bank each trying to get out first and Bill Elliott I think has done it by Joe will Elliot reassumed at least a temporary leave course it's difficult to tell because all the leaders are going to pit during this yellow flag but looks like Bill Elliott may be back out on top the strength of this yellow flag Bill Elliott in deal or not with 61 left completed our ahead of the 36th annual southern 500 here at the Naval down and hello to you and I guess everybody in the crowd watching at home on TV or here the racetrack would like to say hello to their mother too there had been about 70 or 80,000 people who have gathered here at these southern 500 for 1985 seen this man primarily million dollar bill Jim Elliot was won the Daytona in the Winston 500 the world 600 of course went to Darrell Waltrip Bill Elliott needs to win this race to pick up the bonus 1 million dollars from the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company Elliott established track records at vulture races that he warned earlier this year here the past southern 500 winners in the field through ctrl leads everybody with five Alice before Pearson 3 and a bunch of people including Labonte bonnet Buddy Baker Richard Petty and Harry Gant who have won at least once and all those people are green flag coming up Harold kinder looks over the field and flutters the green bunting let's watch this restart what to make an assault on the front position [Music] runs in second third dropping off the face just as bad seems to be difficult Eliot assault on the million dollars still and were also [Music] Yale is running Dale bill [Music] first two cars third boat on six Joe Ruttman seven cale yarborough eight Neil Bonnett night Terry Labonte Tim joy very good pit stop Bobby Allison well and the number 15 car for dear others it's 14 hands making a watch it work this race traffic now he comes up on Bobby [Music] they come down the start/finish line great a couple of make up on the rear bumper of Bobby Allison Scott yeah they try to find a space as SWAT if they go to turn one while but he did it very nicely we just cited as it as having moved up under the top 15 as placed on his car a little or that an additional Darlington strike we talk about Darlington stripe the problem you've been that sheep the Canadian driving the James Hilton Racing Chevrolet qualified 30th fastest here this week at Darlington now we go back to Betty Carson he goes to the high side [Music] many was moved over and let the elder state with one of the overseas stay out of my way [Music] it was actually it was Kyle [Music] Benny really is running a little than all these guys you see lately the windshield going underneath Bobby Hillin Parsons everybody but he had to make that pitch [Music] I tried to go to the inside and they went down into the corner in turn one you're not supposed to go down [Music] there are other racetracks that and I don't think anymore and those here at Darlington now here's another view Bennie's gosh five three six six miles of [Music] bye-bye measure him up get ready to set him up and put it down Benny Parsons is one of the veterans who has never won the southern 500 many looks to have a number of years to go yet before he really liked we told you at the top of the show that this race onto itself is absolutely critical career of every racing driver in there this is the southern pipe this is a race that they wanted heaven this much up front still the fill out he's beginning to pull away Rob Dale earnheardt machine there he saw a good indication to separation and I think we're seeing the answer jack who has the better equipment at least at this the racetrack how'd assuming Billy Elliot and who really would prefer all this attention he and brothers want to do is go racing [Music] the place of some of the old veterans of grand national stock car racing they've done a lot of it on their own indeed it's all been done down a gospel Georges and what much of a race job you know they started building motors in a schoolhouse [Music] dollarz forget the bonus in one year earning with the top of NASCAR record it was sent by Darrell Waltrip a couple years ago well without a doubt Bills Forte has been the super speedways he is as opposed to invent the superspeedways if any race driver could be this year he has one on every Superspeedway Bill Elliott begins to assert himself in the early stages of the southern 500 Bill Elliott going down the backstretch right now with the lead he has led the majority of the riff laps of this race but he has shared the lead with the other and are you currently run second well the sensation of the firecracker 400 Drake Sachs is behind the wall here at Darlington Greg what happened well here did we lost a tire going into the first turn their car was working real well after made a small change they going in the groove all the sudden the rear just come around and seem like the rain went down how was the racetrack right now if dragons with slick is in tight what does it feel like well we felt late when we started the reason we had to part night enough but as soon as they drop the flag to track was pretty slick and on the first course we came in to tighten it up a little bit Greg sacks certainly disappointed to be here he'd rather be out there on the racetrack for sure jack by tightening it up as we see a change has taken place in second position every weekend is scooted underneath the learner counting up there there I get what they call war bike it looks like these two cars have got plenty of light maybe well in a way maybe not enough Earnhardt trying to get her back around [Music] in his mind stole from him just a couple laps ago well Harry Gant was the six fastest qualifier but in practice yesterday the crew said hey as a matter of fact with a full load of fuel we're running maybe closer to our qualifying time than any other team out there don't count us out of this thing right now he's running showing in the second position I'd be very cautious what a lot of room I give it anywhere very [Music] here again is really showing that he's an outstanding driver of the hound - team - grand national raising the man who darrell waltrip lots of that time check you can see they're running a tyre smoke that dispersing these tires down into the red hot smoke both cars not handling as well as one would hope [Music] Johnson going another one you see any smoke there no obviously one dramatically [Music] after anyone laps he leaves here yet nine the bonnet as to the three of them are the only [Music] Yarbrough and saps the list bubbles only eight here's a good study on race traffic coming up okay on the back fence there take now the man on the right side of your screen is jacking wedge as they say into the car he would be sure AJ's letting in no I need more in this Copenhagen Oldsmobile they've established that they're cleaning the windshield they're getting ready to send him back on his way to custom by the way his crew chief and Roger hampi they're in the western half the sunglasses who is of course the crew chief for Kenny Regan they started this race in thirty ninth position talk about a big assignment boy pulling away by the way he commented they have missed him at the Pocono IndyCar race a couple weeks ago yes he surprised all of us when he came in the back of the pack and raced into the top ten was challenging for the top but something went amiss with the car but super attacks from time to time those days any doubt no question about that but look at the question here it's a battle for position cale yarborough [Music] example of how you have to pass [Music] cale yarborough has moved in the six for those of you who follow grand national racing regularly here by car number only thirty three three five [Music] including about five or six others make that twelve others on the lead lap 22 [Music] [Music] to the inside but had nothing to do with it he was enabled they're being shown of the 8 spot Ruttman back in ninth and Wiseman Chevrolet hopefully for a physician who was wanted rocky [Music] we felt that they would be [Music] wasn't exactly experimental but it wasn't the tried and true formula they were home after the first day of fall of mind as we Peniel putting together they were the fastest qualifier Saturday why they sent the car home Brewer said that dog just wouldn't [Music] I think we mentioned the topic yesterday show they have their own diet down here it's our really big you order iced tea interested we gotta ask for unsweetened iced tea because up north they get it when it's not ensuite gonna dance for it but not in the South you got to make a special effort [Music] we tried to carve last time and we just got a little too tight now we'll make some adjustments on the neck the car apparently pushing he's having an awful hard time turning the car out of turn four now that's where he's losing all this time now the car didn't [Music] they change right-side tires everyone else Keynes left side tire Gus Earnhardt having a handling problem we mentioned a little bit ago Li Hao limited the list of winners so far this has been so far this year has been only been six people have been Pasquale of Myers was addressing that and saying that Earnhardt would complain coming out of the corner that is why you're seeing that tire smoke because when car starts to come around leaves into the pavement tire spins the rubber right off of those good years Barnard is one of them hell eight has ten welcome for the body too Dale so Phil Elliot the quests were the one the Community Chest will build pass go in there one the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company right now he looks very strong Richmond bonnet and Rutland cars going at it in the top ten [Music] you're looking at a relaxer DLE and standing under a number all your thinking at the beach on a Sunday afternoon rather than trying to win a million dollars but Ernie are you concerned about the pace that bill is setting early on now we're not running too hard [Music] okay we a problem we got a page of attorney le then the crew are gonna have to get busy to the crack of the Speedway back on the course pin it was a tire that went away I heard a jacket HB Bailey and boy this is just another installment in a litany of bad crashes for this gentleman from Houston Texas he walloped the inside retaining wall with last race here in the southern 500 another one for HB a DNF and a torn-up racecar he's moving inside the racecar least he looks that way I just hand up to the the seatbelt trying to unstitched em looks like he's at least tentatively right now but if he listed is okay but look at the damage that that concrete HP who picks and chooses carefully is a businessman in Texas this one every race in the trail buddy he likes to come to these places that have led associated with he's a member of the very exclusive Darlington Jiri once qualified the brand of car that he was driving that year in the fastest HP likes to come here brother Childers with all the grand national the first of the leaders in it waiting there stay alert heart he's in as well let's go down a Jerry punch because it looks as if Bill Elliott is getting ready to make his run Elliott is working his way right out of the let's go to Jerry Melia brings of course flora down Junior Johnson standing right in front of the alien ship waiting for his reward a Budweiser car Elliott just about gets quit then he'll run go to work on the Elliot car he looked extremely relaxed inside the car they will Jack the right side you see two right side tires below the car routine pitstop they're only allowed two tires under caution that's the NASCAR rule they have it full of fuel they come back across they are going to Jackson blades are changing the way [Music] only momentarily her heart is screaming around the racetrack trying to get out in front ability does so Dale Earnhardt passes Bill Elliott under a yellow flag and Elliott is once again relegated to second you know Larry the guy that actually look at that here's HB Bailey coming out of the car maybe we were a tad premature and now he's moving it looks like he just needed some help out the rescue crews had gone to his assistance and we'll see if he can make it way down that banking service personnel that are waiting here you have your little boozy that's a job in itself I mean we are talking about a 21 degree Bank here and it did you can see it walks you down the bank by yourself you're not careful he's going to the ambulance now there's Tommy Ellis coming run by this late model sportsman competitor you know they're trying to make a concerted effort to go after the Winston Cup grand national tour a full time next year they got into the middle what a unique paint job look at that red white blue star sanbanggol for Tommy Elvis all-american Tommy the Friedlander Chevrolet he qualified well this week here at Darlington he was the 12 fastest qualifier he was above 154 was that a good place to start this race from it he's run very steady about it 15 position in this year's southern father well bill Elliot has been besieged by press people he's been guarded by a couple of State Highway Patrol people all week long so we took our Benny Parsons to look more pastoral setting foot bill hello everyone we wanted the opportunity to talk to Bill in it and we wanted to get him away from the racetrack away from the hustle and bustle and I think we found the perfect spot the Florence Country Club as you can see in the background it is beautiful out here dusk and I think that the weird relaxes we're going to be and Bill thanks for coming out with us tonight good to be here it's been a good year hasn't it well no doubt about it just like I said today I feel like no matter what happens from this point on we've had to give you went 1983 November 1983 you won your first Grand National race Riverside Riverside California how many races did you win in eighty four three three Winston Cup races in eighty and this year you absolutely just almost dominated the sport what the hell people ask you out I feel like this you know even at the end of last year we had things starting to come together we started running good everywhere we went we were finishing races we were doing extremely well in the races and I feel like just experience from all sides my experience of finally figuring out what I wanted out of the power ernie's experience with the ancients and then staying together and it's such a good job that he does and all the people back at the shop they're experienced if no one want to look far on the racecar and no one want to check and things of that sort and no one reading the situations as they come along during the race feel like that's been more of a key than anything else you know you you've got an opportunity you had an opportunity for a couple of months out of win a million dollars have you been able to handle all the media attention I mean there's newspaper writers and TV people crawling all over you well in some aspect I know well maybe I got a little short on some of the stuff but yet I try to deal with it the best I could at the time you know and but diet is something that comes with experience I feel like now I'm more prepared to be with it because I've been through it Plus how many other people are ever been put in the position I was putting it you know I mean I realize it's very difficult but do you guys really think about the million though well I feel like we've done everything we could do to the color as far as preparing it for this race I feel like we had another shot at it to world 600 and things didn't work out we had some I guess that was a worst weekend of my life or worst week the way the circumstance just went that weekend we went ran the Winston on Saturday we didn't run good at all and yet the car was jump out of here and I feel like we just weren't prepared for that weekend because of Sunday because on batteries were a separate because of sin right because we were trying to concentrate on Sunday's race and then somebody came along and we just had a had a whale that had a little bit of wild in it that was protruded in and it rubbed a hole in the little brake line between the calipers and that's all that happened it's something that you could check the rest your life things on the racecar and that's something that you'd never check or never even think about so you had no brakes on that and then during the race I ran out of brakes and had to end up Dickson man it really hurt us a lot but you know then coming into here I feel like things are so much more relaxed so much more at ease you know I felt like if a race paid $10 or a million dollars I've been approached the same morning slow talking is red hot drivers bill Elliot the man who has the [Music] while the top six at this point Gantt bowtie Dale earnheardt number nine to Phil Elliott Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarborough 15 cars have remained on the lead lap we have officially recorded a hundred and four laps of the schedule 367 of this race the average speed 120 to almost 123 miles an hour after 100 laps the race record is 134 miles an hour caution flags are seemingly a way of life at Darlington taking a look at Tim Richmond there in car 27 he's having a leisurely afternoon Larry wanted to check in and see how he likes his Sunday Drive Tim Richmond this is Larry nuber up at ESPN control right now you guys are embroiled in just a touch of controversy aren't you [Music] we should not be in this situation although ever fallen is knowing he's by now Tim you have been a real threat for the top five positions though when under green the car looks like it's working pretty good how's it feel inside the cockpit [Music] then stay with it and good luck in the situation we hope it gets solved to your crews satisfaction thanks Tim thank you very much let's explain the situation the Tim Richmond alluded to when the caution was displayed for the HB Bailey crash Tim Richmond and Joe Ruttman allegedly and I repeat allegedly ducked onto pit road too soon so what that did is very similar to what happened in Bristol Tennessee a week ago with Darrell Waltrip they weren't they weren't given the opportunity to catch up to the tail end of the lap leaders so therefore they're being considered now on the tail end of the lap directly in front of the current leader of this race and that's Harry Gant but in danger of going a lap when they drop the green Haley changes upon seven drivers so far in the race today among those who has led a lap under caution flag Bobby Hillin that number eight there that bright yellow and black red trim number eight whose father Bobby Hillin senior usually watches these broadcast and Bobby senior your young man has picked up five extra points a day for leading a lap here in the southern 500 boy that sounds exciting for a young man like that and just a couple years ago with the Texas prep high school it's so difficult on a restart like this to cancel out all the controversy and the feelings that you may have with the likes of a Joe Ruttman and its enrichment knowing that they feel they should be in the back they've got to get ready to come up through the gearbox and hold off the leader Harry Gant or they will go a lap down and all the argument in the world isn't going to do it there's a good look at Richard Petty he's mired down there in the lapped car brigade on the inside leader arrogant [Music] is the white flag lap cooldown and here again cale yarborough Eliot all the other top runners because they are almost one lap down [Music] a shot at winning the race the trick is to stay at all cost the lead [Music] because then he can just cancel them out of his competition column for the lead and for possible win here in the southern 500 both Minh and Batman 4:27 here again is putting it to right now read well worth the race yesterday watch Richmond try and come back to use it the crossover go [Music] Harry slides just a little bit he loses control just for a split second but is enough to hold back Tim Richmond you're one lap down I've put you away not going after Ruffman old Richmond and Rutland looked like potential winners at certain times during the invasion without after shoots here on this so much talk early on let's take a look at a couple of other fellas you and ruts car from inside of any party [Music] beginning to show some promise here as we reached 100 many party and easy [Music] don't leave Buddy Baker moving to the inside Baker also on the lead lap he's in the 11th position Jeff he and Robert Eric dinner the Carr the first time that the maker has been a car operation directly shard and dick Berggren has got an update on the canoe Ron Bouchard let's go down to him on well Jack he's really been having some problems with that car today the most recent problems are front-end damage and the crew brought him in four times here recently [Music] buddy baker who runs right behind that funny-looking toes cars number 47 Valvoline car Bouchard he was a man who has been acknowledged through his career as one of the experts on the super speedways he has not won here at Darlington over since 1970 to make his way back to the front position in the 9th spot but he's good that fourth take over the further in the back of the back Jeff bodean battling for the top spots right now would really like to do well here at Richmond over at Darlington he has dropped out of the last three races in a row Jeff bodean the number five [Music] big Alabama running very nice boy Eliott learning they're bobby millikin got around to Richmond even though boda Heinz had a disappointing season you know what he is ranked 5th in terms of the most money won in [Music] $36,000 take a look at this Tim Richmond potential incident going on [Music] Wow take some avert actions and defensive driving ducks the protects back on pit road AJ Boyd is not without wins in grand national competition he has won seven times in this type of racing [Music] the battle for the week our Harry Gant going after it right now [Music] away from her again but is still on the tail end of that lead left it's like being in the middle of an arm wrestling match and you're getting down to the end of the table but you just won't give up [Music] Joe Ruttman officially one lap down there's Cale Yarborough's artis ford thunderbird a lot of people felt that this was going to be a season of continuation of the domination when they ran a Chevrolet Ford this year a litany of bad luck bobby allison hoods up on that that's not a good sign for allison and his team Bobby Ellis is one of the top [Music] continue to rock it around [Music] there's so much racing left to go that'll testing each other out all of the drivers will tell you that it really makes no sense to run away and hide here at Darlington because they can change so quickly [Music] listed like john o'sullivan used to [Music] trail goes from super speedways the short tracks to road course well on all kinds of racetracks and it raises an interesting question about Darlington isn't this racetrack because of its length the Super Speedway because of its shape a short track here this is a super survival racetrack you don't have to do anything [Music] I didn't have the best but I tried to pick and choose where I wanted to pass people and find myself where I need to be when the race is over that's what you got to do here you may not hear about there I may sit there all day when it comes inside that last number of miles I hope to see far living eating the rear end out of that car number nine well that's the guy you got a taste well then basically what we've said so far Jeff precisely my point all of these drivers the most difficult thing is back retainer and for the last couple of laps really come about all this right now [Music] sixty five times that he has won a race he's ranked fifth on the all-time win Bannen continued their pace in sixth and seventh position directly ahead of them number nine bill well jr. Johnson's whose cars are bitter deep Ramadan the Grand National Stock guardrail [Music] back in 1962 Tulare Frank jr. was dry but issue these bill they are in the racetrack they are performing about the way they always do had a Grand National stock car races that Jerry punches with junior right now Junior Johnson standing here on the pit wall with junior year cars appeared to be running awfully strong but I'm not being putty [Music] and only made you gamble all tournament we're just gonna sip that what we have we're gonna find their time here in the Budweiser pits meanwhile further up pit road in the older lumpy business a pervert [Music] [Music] when he hit the wall a few minutes ago [Music] swordsman race yesterday for a great amount of it until eventually he crashed out of it today's having Han and they're also having some scoring crowns as well you know Larry we took a look before we went to the interview with you Neal Bannen we're running [Music] that hand signaling that goes down here to the inside they look I'm trying to make a hole to get around Lake speed the lapped car Clark Dwyer and signaling back was his teammate and that force was Neil bond saying okay buddy if you're gonna go there I'll follow you look like that Darrell had ideas moving to the inside but the first corner took a turn left there don't you yeah I think so but what he was also doing through not only signaling to teamate the au bon appetit I'm trying to get to the inside give me [Music] north on weekends off grand national racing and his winning races there they go to the you know you talk about AJ Foyt normally you'd want to see if up there running for the victory but you've got to put some kudos on AJ to yellow bumper and he's doing precisely what any room you do learn back at race for the victory that next I know what I go through the never a cubit are just not conscious point that rookie just don't fit I think I want to say it's boys first time here leave cookies dead it's off rookie by any other day mister is that's what he maintained all through the week here right straight through with the orientation everything that has ago [Music] winning grand national competition way back in 1972 selected races he just a fellow Texan right down into the gray matter down there in the hilum has to bite me scratching quad to get back in the booth Ellen's going to the high side of AJ this time [Music] my son AJ Foyt Ricky Rudd Ricky Rudd has stayed on the lead lap a position right now Lake speed has dropped one lap leader [Music] one car being driven by slick Johnson - this week we see speed and Rud Rud Bouchard right behind there running the guild on the racetrack right now but rich in blood as the guy who's been able to keep pace with the leaders surely Elliot's in her heart late laughs executed some perfect pit stops and ricky rudd still runs and a potentially competitive position so you heard jr. Johnson say look it's important to just stay in the legal [Music] been around here for a number of years the car and our chief mechanic on Ricky Rudd scarf you can be sure that that's [Music] this year's Daytona 5 the man who comes to Darlington here in 1985 as a rookie as we told you but a lot of people still go to him for some reflections on how to drive a racecar but he was in the unusual position of being on the opposite end of the stick this week here down with NASCAR called their rookie meeting together here at Darlington it didn't matter what your credentials were whether you were the only four-time Indy 500 winner like a.j pointer this year's indie pole-sitter like Pancho Carter you are rookie exactly like Ken Schrader and exactly like Mike Waltrip because you had never driven in the southern 500 Ricky Rudd presented an educational video to the assembled group complete with tips on passing in defensive driving then he and Neil Bonnett drove home their own points during the right situation here is it it looks like it's too late alive it's actually a one-room racetrack and any time you're on the bottom of the racetrack you're actually in the racing groove we're all just trying to get out of the way you're not or intentionally you're actually in the racing proof so you know how the car got to make arrangements to get around and like you said it's we're asking you guys do the hardest thing so when your first time here is to stay out of what if your car's running up front with leaders you know more power they jump out there and expect the other guy to treat you the same way but if you're in the inside they're asking you probably run 2030 miles an hour slow or sometimes you think you should because you're gonna slide it brother's apartment nothing like did we run over Dennis back straightaway even in practice you have to practice in I want it place this one or whatever don't hesitate down at back straightaway you're halfway there and you said lead car coming if you motioning by needs that's one way to communicate all day long motion that car by do you make that commitment tell him to go back if you got a drop anchor let that call on rest when the meeting adjourned Rudd explained why veterans like Carter and poi paid so much attention well you know those guys they're winning race car drivers they they come they didn't come to Darlington to just try to be here they came here to try to want to win races and I think they're probably trying to pay attention as close as they can to any chip that might help him win and I said whatever it takes of them guys to win they're gonna they're gonna look after and try to do and I feel like if the situation was reversed if I was over it and indeed I'd be totally lost and IV I'd be listening to everything anybody had to tell me they could help me out help me run better the rookies all season long that man right there Ricky Rudd and they passed the torch Thursday night and the Obon so on that basis always a few laps ago is the riki instructor in any other tell you just how important it is to go through the roof the orientation at each and every racetrack they run of the years right behind rod that of course is the Ron from sharp machine of Buick and when you look at the front end of that car the fact that this race back it's not as critical if some others you know you can just leave all that duct tape on there and it's not going to sacrifice all that much speed in a place like Darlington or effectiveness and for that for position they run and hate the 9th right now on the lead lap 12 cars on the lead lap of the leader by the way the leading rookies so far in 1985 is Ken Schrader back up front as we look at Dale Earnhardt still running in the front position what position I was gonna say I thought that Ken had taken some of what I'm gonna manage but Bernard has moved back around Harry Harry runs in second and Bill Elliott is dropped down to fourth position is Jeff what - snuck in there [Music] arrays where everything stabilizes [Music] 43 laps completed waiting for that 350 or 360 mark earn our hopes to join people like Monty block her stylist and Curtis Turner guys who want the southern 500 [Music] trevor boy looks like he's gone into the wall one more diamond look at the smoke just pouring off that right front tire and a windshield they justthinking a heck of a hit a lot of the leaders came in about so depending upon how the setup is going we expect them to be in check well at this point all the leaders should come in because you'll want to take advantage of making tire exchanges you know you've only can change two tires during a caution whenever you get that advantage you want to tuck onto pit road and take on some new rubber either the left sides or right sides depending on which are most needed the faced cars right now let's think about here come all the leaders there's Earnhardt coming down pit row right there lay Monte Carlo for Dale Earnhardt comes to a house a leader will get right-side tires a pop a few minutes ago and one of the other cars Lake speed is stopped Atlanta blister left rear tire a lot of crews are concerned about the tire we're here now I think a good look at the bright side tire the hard two right-side tires fuel he's down it away 14.3 for Dale Earnhardt and look at Harry Gant Gant just snuck to be [Music] the gearbox I thought it was in Bristol Tennessee in a drag race instead of here at Darlington you can see the number of 49 car Trevor boys were still sitting on the inside of turn one there's Ricky Rudd but having trouble getting a refire now it keeps underway returns back to the battle this yellow flag session and Elliott got out about in third or fourth position 148 laps complete now if Bill Elliott has anything left expect to see it right now because we are approaching the halfway point of this race [Music] well we're back here at the Darlington International Raceway the 1985 36th annual southern 500 and a lot of new faces been running up near the front the last green flag segment some of the people that we saw really rule this race in the early laps and kind of sit back and just for a while Jeff what I'm Jeff this is Larry new Verde SPN again it looks like you guys are kind of running the race that you would prefer least to this point Jeff you certainly are mom one of the quickest runners at this juncture the race so good luck the rest the way buddy Jeff bodean shown as third position right now updating you once again Earnhardt leaves this race last year's winner Harry Gant is second and Bill Elliott runs in fourth we've got a little altercation of sorts down on pit work in Richmond is being we are being told was an infraction during the class caution he ducked down to the pits actually this caution he ducked down to the pits before we broke for commercial and he just sped right past the flagman there while he had that little popsicle sign up on the stop side so now they're holding him one lap and he'll put him back in the order and this is coming from NASCAR and Bill Gaz away we're still talking to him but it running seemingly as a threat to win this race you men in the lead lap he ran with Walter now he may go two laps down because of some big problem you know about racing the racetrack and how important we have nation the other thing that's so important here at Darlington more than a lot of other racetracks is to maintain your composure when you get rattled by maybe going a lap down or NASCAR says that you're the tailor to the lead lap you've got to make sure and look at this he wouldn't even take off we said go on and he just stood there and just did a staring session with the guy but when we were talking about you can't let that stuff rattle you you've got maybe you can get a word with old Tim Richmond there and find out what's actually happening till this is Larry nuber at ESPN they've been little rough on you guys with the pit stop today haven't they [Music] well Richmond I think remarks about the situation that perhaps has cost him the second of two laughs a guy who looked like he was going to be a threat for the win is apparently out of it now at this point here at the southern five back of the moment after this green flag is back out at Darlington South Carolina Dale Earnhardt is at the point of the pack again turn our dodge dominant [Music] Geoff Bodine motors and third moving going up desert and there's believe Carrillo but actually [Music] [Music] Larry heavy metal and heavy traffic out there for the southern 500 of this year Earnhardt leads it followed by Ghent we mentioned bowed I'm Cale Yarborough's it runs in seventh there are the two leaders first and second you see how quick Perry has closed up on the rear deck lid and he looks to the inside as they come across the stripe is he going for the lead down into turn one he's on the inside he's got [Music] again and Earnhardt come very close get a little bit out of the racing groove we saw from inside of Benny Parsons car earlier you get up into the there well you could see that Earnhardt was all crossed up as he came out of turn four Gant capitalized on it got all the way down to turn one [Music] represents the halfway the question becomes if Elliot can will he as we approach the halfway point Lake speed by the way the third car in line there the white car with the black and yellow trim is not on the lead lap there's car number twelve Neil Bonnett he was slowing being called into the pit which is if they've got some trouble on the left side rubber this is fairly early for them to have to make an exchange after those normal pit stops bonnet is going to go and lap down the leaders are coming past the start/finish line [Music] becomes yet another victim of the lead lap rich Tim Richard comes in he was given the black flag we are told being stopped they're gonna give us an armor to stop and go it was Spence that ruling the compensation flag they put the stop sign up once again frustration with what's going on here Tim Richmond a little bit concerned over difference of opinion between the screw and nest and what we talked about Larry and you just can't allow yourself to get rattled here Richmond now the report is NASCAR is going to give him the consultation flag once again because he didn't adhere to the rules there's Barry Dotson conferring with one of the NASCAR officials his case but NASCAR called the shot Delbert go through the stop-and-go the way not the way he determines it well Jack I think there were a couple of attractions on that it was not then go situation he did not come to stop in the pit area then he got to the other pit road was given the stop sign and avoided making that stop there so Jim Richmond is two maybe three perhaps as many as four laps down and his chances for the southern 500 the black flag twice let's see if he pulls into the pits this time because you're allowed actually four laps to acknowledge the black flag and he stays out once again there is the crossed flag with the black now what that signifies is they are going to next [Music] card from scoring they'll just consider him not in the race of persona non-grata that's the only way they feel they can bring a car in when they refused to acknowledge the black flag well Tim Richmond is a fire fire very competitive and he tries to win every contest being a game of card during a rain delay or if it's a short track and a modified or on a dirt track he tries to Annette very good season Richmond looks like he's gonna stay out one black flag being shown to Tim and the race is over - Jerry punches with the car on a Raymond beetle in the pit what's happening with your car with him Richmond what's going on the natural causes we can be behind her again the 33 car we went back [Music] they got balanced again so Tim went back around when the caution car came out he came back in that kid [Music] Richmond is not here in the 50c moving back down pit road his second coming to see a guy go [Music] like that this racetrack even when you're cruising around on 130 miles an hour Larry [Music] should come in that was [Music] he complained at Bristol Tennessee but then he went on he didn't let it bother any further he raced the rest of the time that's not been the case with Kim Richmond and look how much it's costing meanwhile back up front Harry Gant the man who is ranked 11th in all-time winning for NASCAR he is 1 over 2 dollarz is in roots of maybe another big payday here today at Darlington one seven times but [Music] he has 165 this season he does have a win coming in what a park contrast would you know ever since here again brigade duty on The Late Models board doctor [Music] he works that car real hard smoke coming off the car again taking the car just a little tighter than he'd like to be but he holds on and just works this track that they call too tough to tame to an advantage well that seems appropriate being enough to water because this place was built around a middle can be delayed mother's race in Bobby Allison he showing besides which might bring this race to a final chapter for him body Alison the man who's season here something he has done the experiment with the 40 [Music] exhaust pipes coming out of the headers in Bobby Allison [Music] so many grand national races of champion [Music] 167 laps are now complete approaching fast approaching the halfway point in this ray that hairy hands right now Eliott [Music] back at Darlington just update you the guy running in the lead [Music] this race Harry again running in second in that red car the second red car [Music] flat tire was forced to come into the pits and Terry went a lap down [Music] even though a driver may have a shot on the guy Jerry [Music] into the corner especially for was driving for all he is worth because he knows exactly the situation he has ended he's hoping for a yellow fight you see Harry right on his bumper something Neil staying with them coming out of turn number two letting you three there's exactly what he did now Ronix gonna go back on the end get it back [Music] here again he bangs into bonnet look at her go to the inside [Music] push back the second hilt are the insiders coming out of turn number two dangerous high-growth he gets around and Harrigan is still squirming a bit [Music] he's getting it back from Bernard going into three moves and Bernhard [Music] you [Music] another Ford Thunderbird Cale Yarborough nine there [Music] [Music] well but you know David Pearson [Music] a weekend of a hurricane back in 1976 you know the Hurricanes name was [Music] he of course is sweeping through are approaching the country this weekend and ethically [Music] and look at Kelly opera you're a bro beginning to show a little more muscle Larry not want to give up easily though bonnet seems to make a gentlemanly gesture to Bill Elliott the outside Elliot just as in showing the high-speed that we saw in the first 50 laps of the race let's take a look at a couple laps ago and Anton Rana were going at a camp was out of shape crowded down into Neil way down on the apron earn her [Music] side-by-side looks like he's trying to come back in he cuts across the grain and yet almost by harried and for the week this is going on Darrell Waltrip is coming into the pit area junior Johnson himself on with the signboard watch for junior when Darrell comes to a stop have been the pitch of the Budweiser Chevrolet they change right-side tire it has to be an unscheduled stop looks to be probably a right-side tire going down the car getting a bit loose he goes to limp out of the leader he is now moving away 13.1 [Music] in that number 33 car [Music] [Music] [Music] we have just completed lap 183 and they want to they can make this race now official at any point the weather has been cooperating beautifully the Sun has been sucking in [Music] helping us out here it's beginning to look like this will be erased we're tired and you said Tulloch trying to cut that car around the corner the interesting point here anyway as we watch those two guys everybody is still looking over their shoulder at Bill Elliott who looks like he's running unreal well you can watch the shot as Earnhardt goes by and Dan both of them smoke the tires but when you think look in that same area at Bill Elliott you can't say that done thing just and everywhere that he's wanted just been like on a rail bill Elliot the man who is now one here in the spring faces the possibility of [Music] we're talking about now watch as he goes through Eliot has no problem no fire smoke the cars handling takes a little bit of a drift up to the wall but he can cut the cars buying fashion that's a good indication of just how well that car is working but the question market how much more does he have mystic Travis Carter the man who works on damaging though there is more like working hard see the right hand way down on the left hand side of the steering wheel is here just having a job imagine when you're coming up on the interstate where we're going fashion get up hi there and you're done trying to go through it at about 75 or 80 miles in the sea well that's the issue here looks like we've got a caution that's been dispensed for car 51 slick Johnson having his hands full today in the southern 500 and the caution is out yeah slick Johnson who entered here in the Johnson racing port it's a car that he brought some money to help finance this operation and the peppers for this week here at Darlington on the grand national circuit you can see that he has made contact in that cleaner hands car on the right-hand side once again the typical Darlington strike well we are halfway through this race and we've had a number of guys who have dominated this bill later of course one of them at 184 laps the time of the race is just a little more than two hours average speed with little less than 120 there have been nine different leaders they have exchanged the lead 15 times six caution flags for a total of 37 laps up to that point the halfway point in the race out of the race at this point David Pearson the Silver Fox the man who qualified in the front row bill Parsons and Rusty Wallace and a spectacular crash coming out of turn number four and Tommy Huston brakes at HB Bailey Bobby Allison and most recently Trevor boy there you see some of the 80 70 or 80 thousand strong who have traveled here to the Darlington International Raceway the top 10 after 184 laps Harry Gant Dale Earnhardt's Bill Elliott Cale Yarborough and Geoff Bodine six through ten Benny Parsons Ricky Rudd Benny Parsons Ron Bouchard and Neil Bonnett [Music] Eliott still has very much an uphill battle to turn in and he wants to win the winner [Music] the man who won yesterday's live telecast here on ESPN Darrell Waltrip today driving the familiar junior Johnson red and white number 11 is at the head of the pack ahead of the class but he is the length of the racetrack behind he is on the lead lap but at the very end of it Dale Earnhardt right now is the leader but Dale Earnhardt has been driving on some very unfamiliar wheels and tires and dick Berggren is down there now yeah he sure has Larry what they're doing is they're going up and down pit road and borrowing tires and wheels from anybody they can borrow them from what they're trying to find is exactly the right combination the right stagger the right fire side to let the car go as fast as possible and that's why you're seeing different wheels [Music] an incredible fire is going through it not really well every one of them on the regular team that is healthy right now is Dale Earnhardt one of the crew members is gone completely in the rest of just really wish they can lie down instead of having a services card so they're working hard and I'm gonna leave before I get sick too you see on the back of Dale Earnhardt's car it says 1-800 Farm Aid we were talking about it before you know that's the thing that Willie Nelson is so heavily involved in trying to raise funds for the farmers well Wrangler jeans and Willie Nelson have gotten together and they're you got a good shot at it they're getting together to work a special promotion for that as we alluded too early in the race we understand that Willie Nelson may become one of these so-called quote unquote celebrity owners of a race and it would be de leur now one tough customer with Willie Nelson now that's up here to beat the whole house yeah absolutely there's no question about that he would join TT Sheppard of course who owned Garth at number four cards that Joe Ruttman ride the 1985 season looking for green flag ten cars ten cars still on the lead left Neil Bonnett may have been caught unaware he drops down to the apron he was one lap down work from we started this race [Music] and this will be costly for bonnet you can see him working through the junk there slipping [Music] here they are those nine cars burn our rebellion cale yarborough slime box old kale geoff bodine rather quiet today but don't count him out Benny Parsons [Music] it is still on the label Neil Bonnett they're gonna make a change of left-side tires on the bottom car incidentally there is a new left-side tire here and it looked like [Music] testing when it [Music] laughs to go he was only one [Music] really we started this race through the battle for second eating up though [Music] the bad [Music] points rival he's also trying to cover that spot that Gann is trying to coorporate from a music turn turn - and head down the backstretch [Music] than he anticipated Larry I would still have to say [Music] kind of races likewise for cale yarborough many of us have said if your bro is around today also the 88 car of Buddy Baker what a terrific run for him there's a lot of guys that are playing and staying on that deal and Buddy Baker has not won for two seasons his last one of was that they told up in 1983 [Music] of the superspeedways remember about shopping trying to find the right going up and down pit road looking at tires they've made very few adjustments they're happy with the position and all that racecar I think it's handling fine very few people have been able to put together back-to-back wins on the grand national trail in 1985 should learn how to do it today as a matter of [Music] today [Music] but after the differences of opinion that he had with the NASCAR officials and scoring earlier in the race he really wiped out of the channel [Music] he's working competitively again and the contest for that second position continued his way through lap traffic and is kind of like threading a needle or Richmond continues to show real loose really not a factor in the front other than being [Music] car number nine bill he's got right directly behind him [Music] Jim Richmond is exactly or laps in arrears is zipping by you a winner touch them breaks and going to the 21 degree Bank corner car running fast has it I've got a kid Reagan falling around your that sort of a windshield all afternoon but that's just normal bill affair here he dispatches ruttman in he's not too bad out the back but all the debris and the grease that comes off of other car [Music] we get out [Music] he's about oh it straight away behind the front running cars and he's still very much in it sometimes Grand Nationals doc RAC particularly in a track like this simply a matter of staying many parcels taking you around I don't think I'm quite ready for that I thought seriously pity party 50-plus miles and three labs have been officially eight cars remain on the lead lap and [Music] state still riding with Benny Parsons turning hard left at a hundred and fifty mile take a look at the tachometer Daris he works down through the core get a good chance to hopefully see it at the drop drop well you're gonna take a look at the racetrack here instead but he works himself to death 700 times here you've got it twisting and turning and working penny Parsons going to lose some clownish today the cargo Franco seventy-six 7,700 our you're on a racetrack like if Darlington and Benny Parsons is give it his all that he 219 events of 1985 because he Elliott on the brink of the first million dollars not even an RJ Reynolds thing we were talking about long-term over 700,000 significally began at 460 LaVon day at pombles $436,000 in despite not winning yet this year is ranked fifth with 336 plus thousand dollars that Billy Elliot they have a unique profit sharing plan with a lot of their crew members they pay a base salary than a percentage of earning that's a lot more even as far as in Formula one but the first time we the grand national trail think about that knowing each and every one of those guys million-dollar payday for the champion it's double their salary you know there might be a lesson there these guys are known for the long hours that they keep and because everybody has a stake in it maybe it's easier to get up at 4:30 [Music] boys have taken over the business and running [Music] as we continue to watch the leader bill [Music] success they heard oh this is kind of a change there were a lot of secrets were passed down from team to team as true Chiefs changed and different makes of cars went to different teams and there was a lot of stuff that was learned by other drivers who but not so the case will opportunity [Music] so much weakened the boo Elliott is [Music] Dale Earnhardt doesn't have a shot at that but he's got a race Bill Elliott erased him any different knowing that he's got a chance at a million dollars raise him to win you know if I can beat him I'm gonna try to beat him and if I can't beat him I hope he wins car racing they learn you know Larry you talked about how rewritten the record and also the way you do battle in a Grand National Division the same thing [Music] the competition captured the Rookie of the Year and then did something that was unheard of the following year come back and tie down the weights become grand national championship [Music] ever since he's hooked up with richard shoulders [Music] more championship right we're gonna see a lot of human years to come [Music] ladies drivers they have in racing in Dale's father Ralph one of the very best stock car race [Music] we have them now Ralph or encourage people that have we're on a super speedway or a short track like this there's so much to remind them tracking ability looks like a controlled slide even though your honor it seems to be ernhardt signature whether your name just update you Elya does not insect the position but just to kind of keep tabs on that situation is this race further and further into the halfway point past the halfway for by about 10 laps we have had a terrific battle for second position Garo astride lost a little bit of ground some grapes traffic and actually the battle for third second any problems right now [Music] the main race right now on the race is also in the picture there remember Darrell had to make a non-scheduled stop and he liked it he made Neil Bonnett [Music] upon him later in the event there is Kaylee more southern 500 than any other driver he used to sneak into this racetrack all underneath the fence as an adolescent and watch his heroes run the Darlington racetrack looks like Yarborough maybe measuring up Bill Elliott run he's showing a little bit of white smoke Yarbrough that is so that car is handling exactly as he'd like they're smiling Bill Elliott you know so unpretentious you realize that with all the money he still lives in the basement of his grandmother's home and no plans to move out speaking about into this year this year has been remarkable and give Bill Elliott and Bernie and Antarctica right now they've had just a tremendous season and they are on the brink of not only take a look at the interval between the leader ernhardt their second [Music] there is their position and right behind him is fourth position cale yarborough there you see again [Music] traffic to muddle the affair or to steer around Earnhardt out front [Music] they turn number one of this historic old race plan no Larry looks to me like Gant is beginning to close on Earth [Music] Dale Earnhardt one tough customer a winner a week ago at Bristol when he muscled to the inside of Tim Richmond and was able to get the lead at the very final stages of the race at Mile racetrack so 219 laughs at Dillard's leader Harry Gant runs 2nd and 3rd when Dale Earnhardt took the green flag in today's race and propelled him over 3 million Scofield in the green and he's ranked seventh in money $330,000 plus whatever he does today today [Music] he's gonna have to contend with Harry Gant very shortly though [Music] honor [Music] but we'll take a look at Earnhardt here and just see if we can get you know gotta get some kudos to Pancho he's doing a terrific job the leader go on by and then gets back to his own version of racing got to be a lot different than going 200 miles much different I'm sure a lot more weight involved over twice the weighted bomb indycar course Pancho was severely injured in an IndyCar practice session in Phoenix a number of years ago but [Music] career I get some very cutter has stayed with it absolutely his body almost as much as his feet and just try that on a pleasure to think that's my job pose a question to you Larian to our viewers as well as we see a ship auto racing with the races which of course as you know they do not allow Pancho to compete on do you think maybe maybe we'll see Pancho move over like reflective Richmond did to Winston Cup grand national competition and maybe give way for the road racers to the world let them have a didn't cart very question the number of times this week as we see Billy the answer right now is no seeing one the name emphasizing the Apple stars but other types of racing activities he this weekend I think we can expect to see him [Music] top racetracks racecar found his meat way better than anybody now let's check his time when this laughing full speed was [Music] oh maybe two seconds it's called one Jeff about 33 seconds elaborate [Music] tearing down the the road racers like to have [Music] to tell you the truth and I'm expected to be going at this juncture [Music] hence of a second time speaking of failure [Music] [Music] fires I can through in [Music] I could figure out somebody getting in this alone have you got your good set of tires the lasted a tire set aside you know you're still looking [Music] thinking about for the race he said he was going to gear to win and they're running just like that Lari when you talk about a good set of tires each and every kerchief is concerned they employ tire stagger the outside dimension of those tires the circumference make sure that it complements the chassis setup that they've got you deal with stagger maybe the difference between the inside the outside tire [Music] the spring setup that you've got on the racecars was music the handling setup they've gone into the race conditions [Music] I'd be the best that I will attract during the running the race might change of -2 [Music] the car rear tires have to be almost the same [Music] fire when it gets slick that's what you're looking for matter where you put it on the racetrack or may have two lanes to choose from here the car [Music] they have raised that darlin now on the screen buddy Harrington a man who last week at Bristol [Music] Barrington [Music] the financing the sponsors [Music] third position he showed some flashes feed this year qualified on the Super Bass Talladega race dragon [Music] quite seriously a felon Virginia's the same first came on the trip [Music] thanks B Ken Reagan on the screen momentarily to the leader dealer misfortune and stock-car racing the line [Music] we still have eight cars [Music] funding on the back it looks like it's on the duck [Music] and they see that way because they knew it's got to be a trouble bike we have seen in many constant Darlington - [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Joe Ruttman ms-13 [Music] to get himself a couple of spots back not necessarily in the running [Music] trip is still in the chase here still in my heart caution driving maybe still gain that lap back we saw with David Pearson one year he won [Music] great racing at the end here [Music] operation this race team the car [Music] can you get the set of tires little square it away for you that's a gamble so you know you don't really know apparently having tire problems as are several other teams just trying to find the right setting getting them exactly matched [Music] now [Music] really swept this season the 1985 season of Grand National race he is one nine-time you can see the money he has [Music] 9 speed record shy of the single-season record that by David Pearson International Raceway is the scene of many legends and a part of the folklore here is what behind the scenes at the rear [Music] ball game at the Yankee Stadium you may come home with a bat or a ball and even possibly a jacket with the New York Yankees logo on it the allegiance between race fans and their favorite driver however runs a lot deeper than that and what's grown out of it as an industry known as driver merchandise I'd say the average race fan spends about 25 to 30 dollars during the race weekend here trying to buy their favorite drivers material whether it be Bobby Allison or Harry Gant and the man who it is we write here supplied Bobby Allison the 22 car material and we do very well in all the vendors kind of pulled together just to get that fiber material out there the race fan is entirely different than any other sport I've ever been in because they were their true blues and they wear their colors and they're gonna wear because hey whoever it is Darrell they're gonna throw our local people conservative estimates put the annual gross sales for this merchandise is anywhere from four to five million dollars the point to remember is that the drivers receive anywhere from five to fifteen percent of that gross figure it's fairly easy to see that it's a very profitable business not only for the vendors but for the drivers as well and nowhere but in the deep south do they love their drivers and their racing quite as much as they do down here Darlington South Carolina grand national wins in 1985 have been selfies but just a handful of drivers matter fact only eight [Music] he looks like he has a real clean shot and going after win number four here in the famed southern five with nine wins and Neil Bonnett is the only other driver with one by our calculations we should start to have some normal pit stops very short feel that many people said old to be the hot set of this year [Music] Harrington really chief mechanic in his own right here big strapping Buddy Baker [Music] and I get psyched up more about this race and all the other races put together I want to win [Music] drama that is beginning develop down in the pits indeed it is Larry macho Carter's car is behind pit wall lying down behind me in his parlor apparently is that he's burned his foot on the floorboards of the car now this is something very common for grand national racing but again Pancho Carter hasn't been the integrand national car since 1970 right now the treatment is they're putting ice on it's standard procedure for a burn another treatment that's taking place on pit road my hero routine coming up very shortly Walter one of the first he's in and out ernhardt and in [Music] the green flag they were changes they make to the right side making any chassis adjustments Ernie le [Music] zero that's not a bad green flag stop considering any person dumped [Music] right now takes a look at the insider [Music] Larry we saw it at the champions bar and seems to have a propensity for going longer [Music] competitors you know they do work [Music] the next soul here to drop to the wayside to take [Music] normally the ability [Music] would not be an advantage here and Darlington because there are somebody yelled [Music] [Music] oh you've got bright side rubber they have one [Music] so Dylan art becomes the eighth leader to pit under green flag [Music] continues tomorrow while the you a champion huh Joe carders now [Music] a grand national carbon bar I really didn't run enough laps to get the car real comfortable seating position [Music] [Music] and they did right now getting in the car right in front of Pancho Carter his Phil Parsons that crashed earlier in the day strapping him in and very shortly he's going to take off in this number one automobile here comes the leader Harrigan in defense Pancho Carter's decision that's a brave one I going to pay a similar to the decision that will appear if that he didn't go [Music] [Music] Harry Ganz just give him an advantage on the racetrack jack the fastest pitch all the leaders 11 seconds that's almost 4 seconds racetrack remember you're doing [Music] well visually entering just coming out of turn - so that gives you an idea how much difference there is between those three cars Kayla Yarborough is sandwiched in the middle there you are in front of I [Music] and another fellow they worked awful hard this week was AJ Boyd right now he's behind the wall what's happened Ajay well accurate heaven brake problems all day and I couldn't get and we got down we get to work finally we lost all the brakes I was in the head I'm gonna shut off and [Music] did you enjoy charlie can while the car was working I really do I'm looking forward to coming back because you got a razor right there and if it's a racers racetrack you can bet a J point of return to this place I think that everybody has this racetrack and we've got trouble Park wire spinning coming everybody who has lost ground to her again during getting in trouble nearly did yesterday afternoon in practice Jeff you know you've got a maybe it's just a mental miscue that makes that happen too why are you wrestling inside these 37 hundred pound racecars it's real tough to keep it all together let's take a look-see well he's already well into it got the brakes locked up pretty close to where HB Bailey crashed but a year ago but keeps it up against that retaining barrier on the inside the sheet metal has a tough break for that kid from Colorado Springs Colorado you can graphically also see how tall the dick wall is protecting the pits it says Paul as race car fanatic [Music] been able to keep pace with the maybe one left on it this is going to be a big break for all the leader and they took on right side or left side tires now they're going to be able to come back in and they all to come back in all the way around that's a luxury [Music] laps to go Bill Elliott Darrell Waltrip among those cars the bid area Gant and Benny Parsons to the other promoters have already been it down at the racetrack you can see that Elliot has had to squeeze during causing clothes yeah [Music] the laps of this year's race just one lap to go before we go back to green maybe an opportunity to talk to Cale Yarborough Cale Yarborough this is Jack arute Waddell Wilson alluded to the fact that you needed to make some adjustments with tires to go for the win do you think you've got it settled down now [Music] well good lucky you will watch on this restart Cale Darrell Waltrip continues to duck in and out of the pits underneath this yellow flag apparently more serious problems we anticipated there's Waddell Wilson Cale Yarborough's crew chief another win this year would suit them just fine they have really struggle but they are used to winning three or four times a year after their abbreviated schedule [Music] there's a good looking to restart with [Music] [Music] behind the first four cars with many persons the wild card [Music] [Music] what the rates per second was like [Music] but he has to come back [Music] you wonder has [Music] live and say he has not shown [Music] let's watch him as he goes into turn three [Music] whether it is indeed tire smoker maybe something coming on look at the he's gonna go around Betty Parsons now [Music] behind yard once again is just reeling away it's like he's just gonna be gone fishin arrogant continues to just feel he has about a second half [Music] schedule [Music] he may be our brakes they were trying to slow him down brakes are such a critical item here at this racetrack you've heard poison they're always really you can see Doug Rikers actually on his teammates guardian bonnet [Music] white smoke [Music] continues he has won something like only three Super Speedway races three seasons [Music] it's been doing that [Music] looks like he's gathered up his boys back today's race drivers [Music] continue to run strongly five we commented then that might have been [Music] Jeremy punches down there the left front brake on the car and locked up it totally almost got the brakes on fire they came in [Music] they're trying to get a fireman over here to put the fire out the Budweiser through scrambling screaming the fire blades beneath the left over the car they have a hose here and here is Mike Hill and left front of the car trying to squirt on that Jennifer and get the fire out walking and now again ISM plays here [Music] rug looks to be a long [Music] looks like his chances are gone and here's Benny once again coming to a stop on schedule pit stop for this former champion Jeff one of the things you always have to be concerned about during restarts as if a tire might equalize or something go out of bad on the tire [Music] to come back even though you think [Music] the ailing Gary along actually how long he stays down [Music] driving the gears [Music] again another day that [Music] after the caution flag Harry came racing towards his second back at Darlington and up this guy here again and the green machine wins it's not going to stretch out that list of one in 1985 because as you can see he leads this race running in fourth this Elliott business run at sixes go down and run and there again is a guy who is already one it needs to call again mr. runner-up he seemed to be a bridesmaid more times than he grand national races but in the last couple of years they begun to come together as a race team in the skull bandit led by Travis Carter and Hal Needham the Garter the beginning to slowly establish themselves [Music] a Superspeedway or cross a hybrid like you'd like to call Darlington in the last decade we have seen how important starting up front is here at the very rough-and-tumble Darlington racetrack their last journey one prior to that David Pearson was the most recent pole sitter to go ahead and win the southern 500 Harry did start on the pole this time he started in 6 Bill Elliott owned another one spot after qualifying you know we talked about the fact that maybe and I repeat maybe Harry Gant could go the distance because he's always gotten such good fuel mileage running it close to the vest though on and restart there I believe they had about a hundred you have to really call for some excellent fuel hitting miracle no question about it Jaquan and go 130 miles even if they were 20 or 30 miles under the yellow flag what dick Berggren is down in the pit area and something has begun to develop in the Joe Ruttman quarters coffee physik thanks Larry I really wish we had Jack arute here because this is a Czech problem what apparently happened is Jill ran over his foot Jack when he made his last pit stop and what their deep venison badly that they they're going to do something in their cannibalizing their couple of jacks trying to get one cook one that's going to work for meanwhile ability Jerry punch has no story here's the reason for the walther fire mikela for our part of the brake assembly from the left front tire and broken loose you see where the practice is broken along here this began to hang down and begin to rub along the wheel assembly it caught it on fire totally destroyed the brakes he's in the brake pads inside of the left foot cut the cable replace it wilee replaces fluid leaks out of this kit brake fluid cable and follow fire that was a fire on Darrell's car [Music] took this return back to the speedway he's out running now but several laps in arrears not only this man but three other people who are on the lead line Darlington International Raceway the straightaways are 1,300 feet in length that's exactly one-quarter of a mile for Harrigan is right now in the front one-and-two their radius is 2,100 ordinarily turn three I don't think that's just tyre smoke by that time by so hard to tell because you could have gotten it off the right front tire and we come under the undercarriage and come up in what one would begin to think might have been a rear-end or something more terminal happening now the yellow plague may be coming out here we've got debris on The Bachelor the yellow fly comes out now this could be interesting it's time to play all your cards up Larry they can go the distance from here this is when these pit crews are going to have to choose their best tires make the final adjustment and gamble if this thing's going to go green the rest of the wild it's going to tighten the field up now let's watch how well grunts now we'll see what we will see exactly one to go 74 laps left in this race everybody now has a chance to come in put on that best set of tires put in enough fuel to go the distance which will probably be a fool but there you see again coming in ernhardt shooting underneath him Harry sleeping perhaps just a bit that time there is the debris on the racetrack looks like just a cameraman down there right in the middle of the group though on the backstretch and dick Berggren is down in Harry Gant spit ready to call the action and enthusiastically Harry Gant overshot his pit ever so slightly they're ready tires is harry gets choice and they've all got the line now they'll learn hearted like four times of hurt heart scar he also got less star cars we'll try to get a comment the card smoking on the racetrack a little bit now we're just now starting to have to use sticker tires we think it's a tire smoking right now we couldn't really tell that's the story from the Earnhardt pit possibly tire smoke only could be good yes Bill Elliott did Pitt yes cale yarborough fitted we were not watching kale but bill changed left side tires left sides across-the-board Larry so everybody's pretty much got the same on board more guys are in it we've got 100 miles to go this could be a quartet type shootout an old game okay Corral shootout with us in Asia this year's southern 500 at Darlington [Music] Larry Newberg Jack arute and down in the pits dick Berggren and dr. Jerry punch down in the pit area this year's running of the southern 500 what you're looking at right now is Cale Yarborough and the Hardee's orange on the inside and the Wrangler blue and yellow of Dale Hurd out on the outside and they both think they are the lead car in this race and negotiations are going on right now he knows to speak Larry here's how that unfolded Cale Yarborough is the only one of the lead cars that pits on the backstretch so when that caution came out there's Waddell Wilson checking out with NASCAR officials about it there's the backstretch pit he ducked in took advantage of that and was out back before the rest of the competitors could hit their pits on the front stretch and he inherited the lead another thing to remember is no time ever in Cale Yarborough's careers he ever had to pit on the backstretch he said to me before the start of the race if I should win this one from the back fits you out guarantee I'll be back there every Raider from now on and another thing we were talking about last night Jack in one of the meetings that we had when Cale Yarborough is near the front or on the lead lap with maybe 50 75 miles to go he's really tough to bet against in right now he is the toughest gentleman in motorsports racing there's no question about that whether it's Indy cars Ford stock cars and he's driven both when you put it down time for the money Cale Yarborough just goes for it and that frontier lundi racing team desperately wants to win this southern 500 I can guarantee you that you saw the rebel flag flag go by appropriately enough here at the southern 500 inside the 100 mile mark to go Yarborough these remember they have struggled with engines all of 1985 Dale Earnhardt runs in second he's feeling very racing red hot right now here again is there [Music] unless we forget let's let's look at the fact that Cale Yarborough's started his hearty sport back in 22nd position they had a problem in qualifying and they had a coil ghovat's they had to qualify in the second day there's Joe Ruttman getting some service and we're getting [Music] looks like lake speed is out of his race car for the second weekend as we watch Lake speed apparently getting ready for a driver change Jack you were mentioning about kale starting position nobody has won this race since 1954 who started this race 20th position on that back in 1954 buck Baker started 23rd and won the race but since that time the worst starting position of any winner was Neil Bonnett a couple years ago when he started 14 another thing another thing a wotl will soon have to contend with Kayle is not getting the best fuel mileage of everybody he only went 57 laps between pit stops the last time everybody else went seven to yourself 57 laps 60 laps would not be enough and ten participating green [Music] his laps down cale yarborough Dylan art Harry Gant and Bill Elliott the man who still has a shot from Tabasco bonus dollars [Music] ernhardt make contact hard in turn one and two but they both gather it back up and continue but that drops Earnhardt off the blistering may set by your leader on the restart daily armor that Elliott has cale yarborough suddenly has about we do it himself and the entire [Music] the pace significantly hairy again it's almost at the tail of the line he stays in fourth position and heavy smoke definitely coming out from underneath Harry Gans car they're outside many here again and the engine department that they have done so well in the last couple of years we felt it is [Music] which side of the it looks like he's not going to be in the hunt now Terry into turn number three turn our dinners turn three their scale about 200 yards ahead of Dale smoke continuously comfortable [Music] mijin so beginning a Bobby Hillin touches the wall coming out of turn number four anxious moments for that young driver [Music] Larry if it was anything other than tire smoke by now one of two things would have happened the engine would have expired or NASCAR would have called it right now is that it's just a deep fire smoke and [Music] watch for the rank the racecar Earnhardt's holds about a football field advantage over the third running field Elliott there [Music] getting a wunderkind bill do it Elliot closer to a chance with a 1 billion and during punches with lakes be what exhausted Lakes feed is flying down first of all I know you're coming [Music] nationwide it's so good you guys work on the car so flower to be a week length I don't know you the doctor you tell me maybe I got a bug or something for that strike me down like there's two weekends and Road first time in five years well there's been a lot of flu going around who got in the car Dave Marcus we won't make Blake talk too much he looks totally Kafka to get out this race had to climb out they put a marker for the veteran drivers in his car the reference there that Jerry punch he is an MD works an emergency room down in Daytona for the first time in the history of broadcast we have two doctors working the pits dr. dick Berggren as a PhD in psychology of all things [Music] fourth position on back in the track that's Jeff bodean right now hold on is again estate out runs in fourth position but way at the tail of the lead pack boat on his fifth moneymaker 16 left Bouchard [Music] one lap down and eight nine - ops in arrears is terry labonte Benny Parsons is tenth and twelfth is Neil make that eleven his car number twelve Neil Bonnett his Elliott begun to sense maybe a problem on car number three because it looks like he's closing in but there's the battle for that position between Vonnegut's around the body and not in the hunt for racing for that position he's just actually in that cluster of cars right now but they've really didn't go in at it I'll tell you there is fun and signal as they go down the backstretch looking now at Tim Richmond there [Music] 307 laps complete remember this race will be 367 laps so it gets closer and closer for Billy Elliot the tension build any winning jab that drama is beginning to build there was definitely smoke coming from underneath Cale Yarborough's car the last lap the other novels [Music] smoke is that more [Music] let's take a look at the here comes a Yeti sensed as we said maybe he gave it a shot for position he goes up into the corner a nice path and let's get an update from dick Berggren to see just if there is indeed a problem problem on there is a problem on Richard [Music] but I'm thankful hundread Lance Goshen he must suffer hit a ladder it's a rear-end engine transmission what is it and will the car last the duration the other car last the NASCAR don't get it you know say something that they're gonna work with so as long as there's no oil problem on the racetrack they're going to let you stay out there you're gonna have tough yeah the car it is a fake to the quarry Larry [Music] clutching blow or the killing blow coming up but it doesn't seem to be happening richard childress may really severely understated that because affecting Earnhardt's of capacity to drive gary would have never been [Music] go back somewhere maybe to a breather or something like that what's nice is NASCAR Whelen liquid on the race pose a hazard for other drivers time is beginning to run out [Music] Dale Earnhardt Earnhardt is about eight car lengths I had of Bill Elliott this race 52 laps is about 70 miles 70 miles on Eliott the only man with a chance for the Winston million is still very much in the thick of it he has hey Cale Yarborough's got a chance to make $40,000 this afternoon that's not too bad of a payday either so you can be sure that [Music] they're all going for bucks maybe a few less zeros that they'll Elliott but they're running just as hard that money's important to them there is a visible difference it's shorter between first and second spot Earnhardt is definitely here comes Elliott the first three positions have visually tightened up over the last three laps rocket ship that distance with those foodie cars is now shrunk to about 15 and I still contend there is smoke coming from both of the towers in front [Music] indeed if it's affecting performance on these machines and when you run 500 miles so many little pieces of parts can come loose and you can begin to have some liquid spill out from so many various and sundry places under the racecar and right now look at earner he is just closing the margin between he and the leader Cale Yarborough this battle is going to go right down to the wire [Music] down at the Michigan race after winning the Talladega and if we got a spin [Music] we'll come on earn high with damage the front end had finally caught up with him and this will move Bill Elliott right to the back bumper of cale yarborough is this the chance that he's been waiting for let's take a look at this Dale Earnhardt Barry you can see it begin to break traction it starts to come around out of have the opportunity to get it straight back up he's got full lock on the brakes the one 360 still in let me brakes there he does now he's clip the wall locks him back up again Wow oh hey Elliot came close Elliott made the right decision normally Jeff a race driver will point out where a car is because he thinks that the best shot that's what car is fighting my way to where he is right now he'll be gone when I get there but watch Elliott come into your picture down low sneaks by him almost gets clipped on a rear bumper but he doesn't and he's coming in for a pit stop so Bill Elliott is making the change they're going to the right-side tires this time last time he changed the left side rubber he we'll be the only three cars on the lead lap so this build position on the racetrack dick Berggren for reward ideal or at least they weren't they'll just blew out of here and it's almost certain he's going to have to come back and again the front end is reasonably bashed but not in terrible shape as the Brennan may not be misaligned just had the feeling that Dale or not so to speak to the last 50 75 left and finally bill Ilya have a bigger chance [Music] the defending champion of the southern 500 watches his hopes smoke out the back window Harry Gant is motoring around on the low side of the Darlington International Raceway he has lost one lap to the leaders and incidentally Dale Earnhardt was able to stay on the lead lap with leader so he still is in it but the area's dropped one lap down and with only 47 laps to go we have a brand new leader we're gonna talk to him right now what about it you led there until that caution period but now you've got Bill Elliott in front of you you're gonna be able to show the same sort of muscle on this restart [Music] what do you try to do intimidate him somewhere just follow him for a few laps and look for a miscue well the cars continue under the caution flag here at Darlington you know Bill Elliott has never lost repeat loss that's not finished first in more than two races in a row in 1985 he's had that many wins this year the most recent race on the trail Bristol last week he was fifth he won Michigan just before that he was fourth at Talladega three races ago Travis Carter is with our jury punch right now Travis the ancient sounds awfully sour [Music] there's no surprise I thought they brought a better but it got closer and closer to the end he didn't seem to be gaining and we were we're gonna pull it away so but relax restart the motors what's ours have dropped about going back degree we'll go back upstairs you know your instructor is tells you to just push on that accelerator like you're standing on an egg and I would imagine that's exactly what's going on in Bill Elliott mind yes he's clear back up into the group but look at Elliot Elliot downstairs he says nothing Eliot is that bumper there is Jeff bodean in the white heavy-duty smoke coming up look like definitely look like tires McCoy here's the contest up front for the front position of the 36th annual plagued the hound he's got a billion dollars up for grabs and one guy nearby starters you know like it's gone away look at Elliot go down on the apron trying to get around bill Elliot was some very anxious moments fortunately for him the entire feel behind him senses the situation and let him go once again a first disaster by mere inches and just fractions of a second listen to the crowd [Music] look at this way you want to talk about some heads up driving cale yarborough beginning to accelerate pulling around there we go [Music] well watch Elliot look at Elliot now for some beautiful driving here goes down on the apron here Larry it tries to hold on not watch Gayle he starts to come back everybody coming let's only get by million dollars and dick durbin is done in the bittern right now with an update dick could well be his last pit stop he's got some blue paint on the left-side wheel taking a quick drink washing the windshield the second quick refuel in the car [Music] then at this racetrack [Music] this track can jump up and grab you at any instance I don't think that that was confident I think what it was getting cale yarborough still motoring on around but I really felt that about 10-15 green flag like there was coming [Music] Eliott may have just one [Music] back at Darlington cale yarborough pits no definitive answer yet as to what might be the problem but it does not look like a blown engine well if it was a blown engine he couldn't have come in under his own power but remember it the Winston 500 the problems that befell our current leader Bill Elliott an oil fitting came [Music] what happened to Kelly Oubre bird heart remains some the lead lab he's made a couple of pit stops underneath this yellow flags are still very much it boy it's like everything is falling out of the sky and landing Vallely he's been just picking his way through traffic having supplying Drive no question about that and what seven laps in the record books once again three cars were being on the lead lap here of the cars one lap down in Buddy Baker and Ricky Rudd's was surprised the important to the sixth position now you see Earnhardt still emitting some smoke must've solved his problem because there's no more smoking [Music] another question is how do you gather it all back up Larry in hopes that you can go racing thirty laughs ago we continued under the caution flag Elliott has the lead remember he's won nine times already this year he's going after win number ten now from our inside in-car camera you get an idea of just what the drivers are going through when something let's go going down into the corner it's in the back stretch working through the turn three area waiting for that purple white smoke there it is directly in front of anything see checks the beer he puts his hand up to let the competition know that there's a problem that's IFR racing if I've ever seen it no visibility zero visibility and Benny made the right move not only looking for a spot for himself but also letting his competition behind him know that there's a and as you can see if you're a veteran race driver you do a lot of this by feel experience tells you what to do he had in his mind confidence that Kail would not lose control and hold his line and he figured that he could drive around that smoke and that's exactly what happened so it makes you a former Winston Cup Grand National Champion Larry you know he wanted back there I believe in 1972 and Benny Parsons has got a lot of poise for a race driver as well as a broadcaster Jerry punches with Harry Renier let's go down him right now we're standing with here near the car owner for Cale Yarborough Harry what was a smoke for Billie just they had to flip the thing off so birthday Kaila graphic you know against the pump right now and I don't know whether he can drive the car at be competitive or not but the car itself is running okay just without power steering the cars running fine is just that he doesn't have you Berger well Caldecott a little pulled like that can just men have that car hopefully you'll be able to we'll know soon lots Harry Renier looking for green flag this time around Bill Elliott is not at the front of the pack as a matter of Maggie Yarborough is right behind them we saw Dale Earnhardt win without power steering earlier this year the beef green flag the pork are in line on the [Music] number two car maybe that - letting go again maybe it's more than just the power steering [Music] they use duct tape and some baling wire but you know what's so impressive about that here kind of far [Music] 367 lat [Music] heavy traffic at Darlington soap Elliott every lap for him is like the white flag lap he is headed for the front he's trying to get there as quickly as he can he was trying to give a signal to Buddy Baker hey let me through I'm the leader buddy watch the car in his head in his mouth and Tim Richmond stood in beginning holding down the hood on Tim Richmond's car the cotter pin has loosened up in Richmond had some vision blocks as he came down the road [Music] just flew right off the boy if he'd had not bad luck today to have no luck at all he's had a litany around about yet another caution flag depending upon where that hood landed coming off together it is the yellow flag is out and there's the remains of Tim Richmond's hood [Music] so a tough afternoon he hasn't had a chance yet to count that million and a big sigh of relief because he now moves to the head of the line on the outside watch this replay now the hood pin coming loose and there goes and watch how close it comes to Buddy Baker up and over Baker it got about 25 30 feet in the air how'd you like to be travelling about a hundred fifty miles an hour and see that coming up bad hubcap be an interstate highway about a month ago and was frightening enough one interesting point here Jeff bodean gets his lead back Jeff bodean in the Levi's garret number five is now on the lead lap with Bill Elliott and that car is shown to be running strong perhaps stronger than Earnhardt and Yarborough leads to this point [Music] the sands and the hourglass are slowly but surely a green at a time going from the top down at the bottom I gotta tell you I know that they have been much more calm here at Darlington this week than Charlotte they've got to be thinking about it Bill Elliott has got to have a feeling deep in the pit of his stomach yes I'm trying to win this race but I am that close to something in northern race Trevor has ever done in the history of the sport making major payday the 36th annual southern 500 this all began back in 1950 when they constructed almost at home around an old minnow pond and we've been racing here ever since those days Kelly Yarborough and her [Music] I'm the lead lap followed by Buddy Baker in fifth has any butterflies they'll quickly turn to bullets inside his stomach because he looks at his rear view mirror and there's cale yarborough [Music] I'm on the lead lap we're getting ready to go back to green one more time if any race driver could handle this type of very [Music] and grateful daylight quicker than the guy that's running second that's what happened to Cale Yarborough Yarborough real loose almost kisses the country just the opinion at this point [Music] over 13,000 pounds of iron between himself and the guy in the red car right there Larry look how quick things have changed so dramatically over the last 40 or 50 lap this racetrack they call it too tough to tame it'll turn around and bite you at any moment it happened to Cale Yarborough [Music] like Yogi Bear and say it ain't over till it's over [Music] Buddy Baker right behind and buddy in six minutes yellow flag is out our gifts is oil in the first corner Harry Gant has been emitting smoke or steam each passing time I can see them - sunshine they're definitely oil right up in the high groove here at Darlington going through one and two this could be a relatively lengthy caution flag I could see three or four laps of yellow flag conditions we watched Harry Gant make his way to the pits one more time they'll probably try to continue their ongoing effort to make repairs no they won't he's finally said that's it area and the report we're getting is that it was the 33 soil here in dollar bill he may become a million dollar bill but you can be sure that Larry I don't care how poised you are you've got to be thinking about that inside the race car right now Jack I think that's a very good point we've talked many times that when you're leading a race and you're this close to the Venetian there are these little nagging caution flags one right after the other it's gonna father you're gonna think about it as a race driver we always say no the answer's no you've reached this plateau in your career you're a Grand National stock car driver this is relatively routine you're gonna take it stride not even think about it but it's got to be different let's give some recognition to the guys that are on the crew is Melling through Harry Melling of course the owner George Eliot the team manager that's his dad Ernie Eliot the crew chief Dan Eliot the other brother runs the tires Mike Brant Quentin Chumlee Nick Gassaway Chuck Hill Steve Regan butch Steven there's other guys on that crew that do it day and in every Sunday afternoon giving Bill Elliott the most incredible racing year that any drivers had in a long time and the interesting thing about a lot of those crew members when it all began back seven eight years ago a lot of them were volunteer they decided just to stay with it they thought they had a comfortable situation a potentially winning team and it has really paid off for them in 1985 they are on the brink of that million-dollar film [Music] is that the letter e on the roof of bill Elliott's car does that stand for hurricane Bill Elliott Elliott Yarborough Bodine the first three after 339 laps they go by very slowly after all these yellow flags four to six are the number three car of Dale Earnhardt Buddy Baker and fifth and Ron Bouchard is in sixth position and Ricky Rudd is also right there at seven on the same lap one lap down with Bouchard larrya can't help but get excited right now because you feel like you may have the opportunity to witness history it's kind of Reming this isn't stretching the point at all of the day we've watched on television a man step on the moon for the first time we said boy I was there I saw it in that's the feeling that we're beginning to sense here with this crowd of almost 80,000 people they're really pushing for Bill Elliott to scorch this racetrack and gather in a 1 million dollar bonus from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company be able to say 20 or 30 years from now yeah I was there I was there the day Wild Bill Elliott took home the million you know Jack oftentimes broadcast journalists criticize and get criticized for maybe being too the air but should Phil Elliott win this race I firmly believe this is a candidate for the biggest automobile racing story [Music] [Music] green flag 341 lamps complete 367 lapse makeup the southern like watching poetry look at all the smoke from all the cars out there that are walking Bouchard slides the father who they're smoking him [Music] let's see if he'd have the mettle to wrestle that car like a grizzly bear [Music] National Raceway they're still knocking off lap swellable [Music] not making it easy he is staying with Bill Elliott and there is no shot no chance to breathe for this young man it seems to have everything well in hand at the present time there's a few drivers that are still out there in competition that have done yeoman's work today [Music] to see them back namely Ken Reagan and Kenny Schrader's you know Schrader is survived this Darlington battle and he's a rookie in competition today and Jimmy's gonna Libby's car there is the ultra seal trader to pursue the learning curve this year and watch out for him next year once you've got a full year of competition under his belt you know him track racing is very demanding and schraeder of course lot of experience on that so as he stays out there on his top racetrack some benches lead in the earlier so straighter out there goes [Music] laughs he runs in third Dale earnheardt despite all of his problems and that air raising spin coming out of turn number two right now still [Music] showing his mettle as he has stayed out there laughs for [Music] to [Music] Coffee wrestling with that racecar even though the power-steering about Eliot car is still much more stable than Mary Renier JT Lundy zone car the cale yarborough violence one key factor in Elliot's success has been their ability to finish races [Music] because of mechanical problem [Music] running up front the way he is because there was not that many years ago Larry when that team almost folded who were not for Harry Melling coming to their rescue George le just said repeatedly he would have [Music] in Michigan by the race team I'll bunju and then a year of course company they lent some sponsorship and now they're on the brink of dominating 1986 like no one before right we start going this could easily carry over to next season 1986 might be more of the same 25 mile 25 miles to go [Music] wrestling that grizzly bear around the Darlington International Raceway heavy smoker number three as the leaders go through one and two a Bernards Bernhard down into the pit area and it is Dale Earnhardt it looks like it's all given up the ghost for him and we're going to go down to dick Berggren who's ready to talk to actually the leader of the Elliott gang dick miss manatee is the leader in Danish George Eliot bills dad how do you feel at this moment early eternity what do you think what do you project for the conclusion of the race if you've got it don't worry we're still as the lives we've been difficult [Music] and and so it's the team here and right now Jerry punches with Harry gasps the one driver internally done in the open Java today here he has to be disappointing to run so strong and then to come up short well I'm tickle the car ran that good today we've been struck rely speed racer's car and super good today I just I just over a bit a little bit I turn about saving down hard on our restart I don't like to do that during the race you know because it that's what I'm turning in a race and all about the turn anymore in second third gear so I guess on his broker buyout bus offensive it blowed all out dirt and finally had to quit but car a good the scope a detained under Travis car and all boys on a super job said that car up you can run about a hammer base you're going to go and just sit there and wait for stuff that happened I was going back to southern 500 to the road well Harriet's outnumbered here at Darlington the blazing bill is still going Wow Jerry he sure is and that's also another example of your home watching there's so much more to the sport than just sitting behind a we on dropping the accelerator there's so many things you can do wrong Monday through Saturday and then Sunday there's just an entire forest to problems and face you gets a little mountainous sometimes Larry it seems like they never get caught up and things just something that you may have done on Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday may turn around and fight you as they say on Sunday afternoon no rest for the weary conversation between penny Parsons and Bill Elliott earlier normal circumstances just a matter of course but in the Russia trying to do something big like remounting an engine you might overlook them it might cost you a race 20 drivers in the history of Grand National stock car racing have won 1 million dollars in their career Bill Elliott stands the chance to win one today and there was Waddell Wilson he's just looking down at the ground hoping that Cale Yarborough has got enough to make the pass for the lead what about it Cale you think even though you don't have the power steering that you can make a run on Bill Elliott well apparently there you've had a good chance to take a look at him Cale what do you think does Elliott shown all that he's got or is he holding something back [Music] another guy who turned in a Herculean effort today was Dale Earnhardt looks like you've probably had them covered most of the day partner but it all came up a little bit short you know it's wrangler chevrolet and your motor park chevrolet is really doing the job today and i felt like a again myself had something for bill but you know when you don't fit you race you can't raise anybody and you know we got up a little high and then rub banks payment they got down i want to do and you know it's fine outlaw stripped all traction spun around it they jacked up about 1/3 wide down there you know just old dogs the car was smoking for the last part of the race what was smoking did you have any idea was etherion [Music] you know I couldn't tell they're just doing the corner and then I'd say the car worked good that one you know Richard the crew did a nickel job on it and I reckon the driver birthday with you and Harry out can anyone handle Bill now out there he's riding that sums it up from Dale Earnhardt well perhaps this will be the last time to give you a rundown on most of the cars that are still out on the racetrack heads up for your favorite driver we mentioned the first three Eliot Yarbrough behind for all these cars are one lap down buddy baker Bouchard in six Ricky brothers suffer two laps down in eighth position number 44 Terry Labonte 255 Benny Parsons three laps down Jill Robin [Music] Richard Pentium 13 and 5 laps down in 14th position Bobby Hillin position the number 90 car of the of 1985 any treatment I'm Larry here we go with [Music] we are guessing that we may have a lot of first time viewers first time fans of Grand National stock car racing and just to assure you [Music] there's any possibility and [Music] racecar drivers say the green means go and the checkered bean stop and no in between and make a challenge to the lead he'll do it but Eliot still continues to look like he's on a Sunday afternoon stroll [Music] just [Music] get describe when a beginning John now Bill Elliott with a chance that no other racing driver in the history of this sport has even ever come close [Music] but he has won so often this year that he might [Music] in one season behind the wheel to look back inside of Benny Parsons automobile he's given us a define he's gotta be fatigued but he's still battling back there unfortunate that he hasn't won the southern 500 he's taking us for a whale over [Music] measure the competition [Music] the red white number nine motors in first you saw yeah bro is still there holding [Music] carry the banner Larry you said it just a while ago words on the screen this is history in the making over 1 million dollars up for grabs take a look at Neil Bonnett and Buddy Baker in the meantime they're battling for position fondant has got down here at the start/finish line in NASCAR official ran out and Baker is slowing all of a sudden after a great Sunday afternoon run Baker has got some problems everybody drops out of position on the maybe that came from buddy's car but Wow what a disappointment for this veteran racer who was getting it one of his best ride of the 1985 season it's been a real uphill crying for this chief will be Harrington in 1985 and they would have certainly like to do well here fourth place finish for them would have [Music] turn this team around [Music] Jordan by just six laps some of the past winners of the southern 500 we mentioned a few of them earlier Firefall roberts darryl derringer was this great race back in the 1960s Larry Frank surprised a lot of the veterans when he ended up winning this race Ned jerk is also carried the checkered flag after a southern 500 this is one race that Richard Petty has won only once and as I'm saying that pick up just a bit Yarbrough is closing in on Phil Elliott this time by five laps to go and Yarborough is definitely moving in you saw the open fist of Harold Henderson to find the five to go Yarborough digging deep down inside his gut trying to gather it up and make one last charge on Bill Elliott Elliott sensed it however Larry and you could see he lengthened the margin if they weren't that turn 1 & 2 area as they head to three he has a comfortable margin with coming up on four laps to go to 1 million laughs to go this time and the crowd has already begun to cheer we can hear them even above the roar of the engines here at this fabled old racetrack a low lip on the front stretch grandstands very traditional here and when the crowd turns out they can even drown out the sound of 20 or 25 racing engines on this racetrack Darlington Internet so many historic occasion to the history of stock car racing the NFPA stock car racing Hall of Fame is housed here this afternoon [Music] three laps to go for Bill Elliott my track record here was set back in 50 [Music] but that's not in terms of winning he must win three of the four town jewels of stock car racing to earn the one [Music] two laps to go and one [Music] you can be sure right now and the pinnacle Eliot stomach they feel like anvil no the man that nobody saw coming five six years ago two years ago you could see that the embassy [Music] three [Music] people like Johnny Mann too [Music] each other by [Music] he wins the championship that's another two hundred and seventy five thousand dollars what a big moment dick bourbon is down in the pit area right now Bernie it was a wonderful moment honey we weren't the best car here today but I tell you he really looked out for us and he's looked out for us all year long you know I can't say much else and that you know my sponsor who's [Music] [Applause] so long and you know it's just a green country okay Ernie's on his way to victory lane to collect 1 million dollars and we can guarantee you that this will be a victory lane celebration like you have never seen before this has never happened before it's only fitting that we have that type of celebration about it a big giant celebration celebrating bill Elliott's victory the third and the four crown jewels of NASCAR stock car racing in 1985 there you can see Bill taking his time on buckling savrinn win here in the 1985 southern 500 the winner of the Winston million the largest single-day first in holla'd oval racing history he came into this race guaranteed 100 with I think the crowd reaction right now there he says about they go [Music] maybe some of the 70 80 thousand that have gathered here at the Darlington International Raceway to join with you and to experience this moment there savoring the spoiled and victory in a well-deserved victory of getting into the car river the essential victory lap and the pace the pitlane in stopping red Tyler's box and there from the schedule Akio jump on the special celebration going around the Darlington internation [Music] this is just incredibly I'm speechless Larry because it deals with the pace car driver in this special case dog Pontiac celebration there was of course an employee of NASCAR McLeod is [Applause] see a shot from the second pace car that is riding along with bill the shot is you see the celebration going on that Jared getting ready to talk to Billy okay a hat flies off but that is really incidental at this moment I think he can buy another one I think so as a matter of fact that every stop along the way there are a number of hats for him to Don for all the photographer's so Bill Elliott continues to savor this special special win in the history of automobile racing Elliott has picked up 1 million dollar-plus in 1985 now with this win here at the balancing International Raceway today in the 1985 southern 500 well this celebration is sure to last much longer than the traditional Victorian celebrations in fact that give you an opportunity to listen to something that bill put together over the winter driving a car on my daddy's race thing every Fairlane got famous tower way the color friend worse julinho Ford could be the path things are different crowds Rory while fastest fan Wild Bill Elliott crazy racing man like deliver the John Wayne to you having my best when I bake them tires burn I still give her hell when I hit my last time [Music] country they become failures with itself John's country that's the group of me Oh they gathered wisdom cook makes my family for [Music] crazy racing but this is the scene that everybody pays to see they all in hopes that Elliot would win this race with the the manna machine and again the room for me here the cloud responding to Bill as he mortars down the front stretch here the first time in a Larry you know they've been talk about the four victories of AJ Foyt at the Indianapolis 500 you can talk about the incredible wind skiing in Formula One racing by Jackie Stewart but they seem so paltry in comparison to this afternoon for the de towhead 29 year old from tiny tossing bill Georgia he was finally gonna make his way to victory lane and received the largest single-day play day in motorsports history you know was back in 1976 that he ran his very first Grand National stock car race dropped out of that race with ironically a broken oil pump and I bet that never happens again where's Harry Melling the guy who owns this team that's one of the things that he deals with he finished 33rd in the Carolina 500 that year and he won six hundred and forty dollars that certainly says a lot six hundred and forty dollar payday to a payday today that was one main and bonus dollars of course stood on top of that money for winning this race alone what he's accumulated so far in 1985 is absolutely astronomical and the feat that he performed you know he cracked under the pressure and he admitted it down there and the world 600 in Charlotte he totally turned it all around in his last chance here at Darlington Bill Elliott is continuing to have a lot of fun down there in victory lane and dick Burgin is right there to join it and this is the happiest Victory Lane perhaps of all time Bill Elliott the Million Dollar Man how does it feel I don't know who you think I'm the last few laps when it came so close I didn't always what are you gonna do with all this money don't worry done obviously a very happy man no doubt about it the entire audience is standing cheering for you bill how does that make you feel very good okay you want it I drove my plane I'll fight alone in a car just one wrap I'm playing to step out and work that my way visit there's a gentleman right over the shoulder of you that man is Jerry long he's the chief executive officer and president of the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company and he's got a pretty good-sized check that I think he'd like to present to you mr. well the greatest driver that we've seen you know one crime and we couldn't be more happy to present watsonville then direct and gold Georgia $1,000,000 and he earned every penny go to jail bye-bye [Music] I'll tell you what I couldn't believe we went to put the money up wife's November or December I couldn't believe that I'd be the one that was a bit one able to get it I can't believe it we're surrounded by it this is absolute pandemonium here the entire grandstand is still standing photographers are ready the emotion at the moment is hard to describe mr. long your feelings I think our feelings on it this is the greatest moment in sports anywhere think where any athlete that ever went through what Bill Elliott went through and won a million dollars nobody's ever done and his bill said before there's nothing like being the first we don't know whether it'll be a second but we have 1 billion dollar bill right now and behind every successful man there is indeed a successful woman Martha Bill Elliot's wife what do you feel awful hard you're not getting all more what's gonna happen next get this over with and all the costumes came out that something's gonna happen I just know it is but it didn't it just went our way for one under the championship under the championship we'll try that is the scene in victory lane this commercial is SS Larry Newberg back at the Darlington International Raceway where Bill Elliott has not only won this year's southern 500 but he is one of bonus of 1 million dollars the race summary here after 500 miles 367 laps four hours and eight minutes is the time the average speed was not a new track record at 121 miles an hour there were only nine meters I say only because oftentimes in NASCAR races are much more than that 19 League changes 14 caution flags for a total of 74 laps Bill Elliott has won the Winston win by winning this race Cale Yarborough nurses home and alien car in second Jeff what eye holds on for third Neil Bonnett who was on the lead lap for a long time finishes fourth round Bouchard is fifth a nice finish for that team that this has worked very hard for 1985 6 through 10th and the race in six spot was Ricky Rudd Terry Labonte was 7th Benny Parsons was 8th Joe Ruttman was 9th and 10th was Kyle Petty Larry my comment would have to be right now that he's won the million dollars but he set one soldier down but he's marching on through Georgia for the Winston Cup grand national championship Dean & DeLuca's Larry you were saying so long deal from the Darlington International Raceway where Bill Elliott awesome bill from Dawsonville has won [Music] three of the four pools of rednecks are racing come on
