party Richard Turner in car number 43 cool calm and collected trying to collected eight watching a kid in front watch him to review that blow by even 88 Baker down on the inside Baker with an Oldsmobile this year his own team alongside now you're inside Benny Parsons car number 55 seeking his second win coming around three and four Betty Parsons are you set to pull this one out of the fire today I don't know why the Ford's going to be awful tough we're going trucks all right you're coming out of Port good luck to you today any problems this morning in that car no problem good luck to you pace car is ready to come in there you see the ports in the front row Elliott in number nine is running the same motor with which he qualified at 205 miles an hour most people thought that was a hand grenade not the case Ernie Elliott says they will run that qualifying motor here they come to live danuel they called a design [Music] delegate on the break what a cloud to go into turn one and he did break away Clement what he did on third here in the qualifying to see if those cars behind me we pick up the graph one by 37 mm 25 mile qualifying race there are other times the drivers been 300 like that is always been some miscue some mechanical malfunction the world of race was dull Burnett and repeat Dale Yarborough moving up very quickly so he was able to pick up the draft of course they were in separate races Thursday here in multi so we really have not seen them run together but we're seeing that right now coming around a complete lap number one coward zero out of Savannah Georgia smoke in the first lap back in the fact 31 degree banking occurence wanted to it German showing us how speak that Bank it is even those two wars are just drop a lot of daylight between themselves and rest of the field one of our camera guy said Benny parts now hang on to a good solid third spot he could have been today live team 7 darrell waltrip he is one of the major sleepers in this race 55 Parsons to Johnny Hayes car we wouldn't briefly they're here he is coming back to the tri-oval at 1600 foot area leading the 18 degree banking here you are in the third place car Benny Parsons trying to close on those two sports and that I think is pulling up a little he might be and you see how he saves us directly behind we were sticking on this ramp as much as he possibly can if he wavers out in two or three feet and gets them thicker air horn to battle climb down but I'll say they're going to come together and run this is the way it has been but I want to leave the line laughs good new yards in front of tell ya here's tail trying the inside yeah there's down the tower number zero smoking he may be coming in Yarborough goes into the lead Bailey opera with a lot L Wilson car they had heating problems early in the week means Evans solve on the 125 Waddell Wilson area near JC Lundy the car owners have their fingers crossed here they come in part of this immense crowd back to completely now you can see those cars back in the third position what you have a second place David Pearson running extremely strong this hallway number 89 is coming down pit road that Jim slaughter from the seagull with Hoffman relevance the father made 11 children having trouble here early in the race and can we note that Perry Labonte he started back in 31st position is always picked up in position so he is coming towards the front what would wonder if this is the year of the record the record 1980 177 miles per hour that my body they keep this to the speed up duty because they're running around about 200 miles an hour the lead Pierson's into third bakers in fourth Ricky what is in fifth riding in sixes Kyle Petty a lot 14 corners there you see that second group Buddy Baker with his own team this year Robert Harrington the crew chief surprised to hear not to himself another people everything Elliot doesn't Graham right online Baker is planning a nose mobile and summit said that the frontal area that car is not conducive to the high-speed but he has proved them wrong and he's been competitive all week trying to Brazil down the coward in the pits number 75 Lake speed has taken over in ninth the tenth comes betting 1141 inside Richard Petty's car as he closes on Darrell Waltrip goes alongside Richard Petty guns down Darrell Waltrip here comes Ron Bouchard right behind it well it made that look easy but they just simply got the gram working together welcome Hockney's flowing down a little bit now way back in line I think he got left out of the cold a goes down a lot of low tracks and it goes wrong who shot helped to push through to credit grid when he's on job back with the leader Elliott young is a two-car race will we have the fastest 500-mile race in history to be decided years Eliot Yarborough certainly getting at the program Tannen it's interesting that they've switched those positions a couple of times already this early in the right that will keep them from running away from the with a hail car in particular it had four rohini problems and we wonders there meaning the trick in order to keep the cars to risk onomatopoeia it's been said that is racing that block is where preparation meets opportunity I'm a national champion Charlotte body fit an addition to all of tools our prize there are 36 wheels and tires mounted up here with a national champion of call upon during the course of this race thank you battle continues tied at 28 for the lead further back we have two cars working on each other in the third position that's too real really Alzheimer's an incredibly fast guys buddy bacon of course David kids and everybody bacon the winner the fastest ever 500-mile right here here's Richard Petty pulling up to battle Benny partners third place car Pearson banker now you see for entertainment working along with Marcin as I find the blue shark watching that fence go by did you just some idea of how fast these guys really are going [Music] 6/7 lake there Richard Petty on the High Line they're closing in on a knee bar from being in a slingshot by any second now or maybe he'll just rap a little bit to try to make play Hellinger tied on the outside he had a notion on the inside then move away Richard Jeni move on Parsons Teddy changed motors this morning he found a leak in the oil pan on one of those three Dan Gurney engines of Revati ER this is an ancient attested Bouchard gets dragged along and pulls them as far as wedding penny was able to slip in behind boost job - so sometimes you get left out in the cold appear again the leaders Eliot in the number nine is try with incredible horsepower there was no wind tunnel testing done on part of a - a lot of talk about how slick and fixed up it was never got in the wind tunnel at all during the winter it's amazing at the government of Rajasthan across the veil George's won it away from the engineering of bones of America but yet they've come out here and just run tremendously 16-hour days what it takes bill Elliott's crew with their fingers crossed as they come around Italy flat number nine they go to live now all AJ Foyt slipped up there now with Richard hey Ron is on the move he's coming where is he now or we isolate that good well sixteenth now yeah Lambada he's been a pack there that is better tell us where Labonte as we come back and we'll play with him 16th witnessed I'll tell you who's throwing there's a seven car the Wood Brothers car Kyle is up to fifth yeah here comes Richard after his son yeah Ricky Rudd going well - how fast what's the record for the first time sir [Music] [Applause] [Music] very moving important [Music] [Music] poor wretches losing on country god crews did you see that loyal boy [Music] pillbot [Music] like you better keep trained on that Richard Peddie bill pass [Music] so obviously the 13th [Music] afford looks great continues here live coverage of the Daytona 500 is Bill Elliott and daily I will have those Thunderbirds fly David Pearson meanwhile made the third position over on the field moments ago Richard Petty almost in the car go right into the corner all the way to the wall in the east banking of the track who was able to gather it up he lost a couple of positions on the move is Terry Labonte higher inside Richard Petty's car number 43 is trying to clamber back up through the standings his son Kyle is running very well in fifth overall and a car that is really making a move now in his terrible body the grand national champion he's starting back in 31st place he's already moved up to 13th so he really has that car number 44 on the booth Dale Earnhardt in the car number three is hooked on baby became back you can see now moving up on Harry's nearly car number 33 30 live Mike joy is with Oana Wilson when the green flag drops Waddell was a question if anybody could run with Vallely you folks have answered dad and he'll hasn't said anything but he's been able to keep up and he's been able to pass him the bill to sell an awful strong race car what did you do to solve the overheating problem you had earlier in the week well we we had to go back and drill some holes through the block and heads and a head gasket and trying to get the water you know out of the block where the heat was at but then I'll get Rhoda Christmas under vacuum Dale in there the bodies fruits meats in here putting a watch on the driver travela body has passed 17 five [Music] I've already yelled is he asking too much of that guard I don't think so Christmas presents in that bed we had to get biologic card we pray we get labs so he's running about the same places the leaders right now we're fighting and rising so we feel pretty good right now but he's busy and what has happened here as this trailer body moves forward Dow Waltrip is going backwards back to you Ken the other man Levu is that number three Earnhardt Earnhardt has really discovered something the last couple of days they feel the Richard Childress team they can put that number three up into this race and lead some affords over but here comes the story at number nine and 28 now at the 28 car Cale Yarborough to stay in front there behind it second floor I know it's a bit early to say but these guys are lapping about 196 196 miles an hour I think that's and I mean quite frankly Richard Petty behind the Sun and Ricky Rudd there you see the 7 car the Wood Brothers filed vetti driving for the Wood Brothers who burned that number 21 the number itself over to David Pearson here's Ricky Rudd they got generation ranks at Unadilla Georgia was similarly in the going and he had an accident in Thursday's qualifying race cars wrecked and run Augmon he was a victim of circumstances they've worked long and hard to hit that car prepared to get it back in the 500k Leon first man in history to win three consecutive Daytona 500 Richard Petty wanted in 73 and 74 next year 1975 he finished back in seventh place Richard Petty has done more driving here today than anybody else that I've seen out there even those here in the body a masterful job of moving up through the field but they do have been up to be upped and he sent back from there the 9th and 10th he was really driving hard seconds from paying this group this one two and the third fourth and six seven eight cards all gathered up I think they really I think these two guys are just driving a spark they have to do to stay in front I'm going to run away because it's going to be politically dynamite if they do but they're not running as fast they could there are a few hundred mile an hour laps in the qualifying rounds only only 196 course there is a little different than the racism in top of the show it's warmer today which we get to speed a little bit plus the fact of the 300 mile race yesterday putting a little oil and grease on the track though Fulham down samba I agree I don't think yeah running away average speed for the first ten laps one hundred ninety nine point five five seven miles per hour one nine nine that first lap getting cranked up to speed well over 200 mile an hour lives for those two leaders run that on sensation no I don't believe we are David not a Fed Scott over by that David pitch the nutty baker doing extremely well it's going to be a couple of seconds behind this day now running behind these front two cars about three seconds back David Pearson the 21 and Buddy Baker his Oldsmobile in port then it's the smoker join down there is her number one bottom for a strike one he's way up high in a groove as you can see right here we are number 17 of Skinner agent who was in the pits just comments ago it's a valve cover situation they won't let him stay out there like that give you hot baby if you can see that when you're coming to undermine down the backstraight cars and third is corridor running several seconds back from leaders and now there's a gap back to the fifth position Bouchard followed by petty and six wild in Richard Petty in seventh Benny Parsons innate they learn hard at night going Santa's Phil Parsons AJ point is 11 Ricky Rudd is Bob Bobby Allison 13 married at 14 blade speed 15 Greg sacks 16 Labonte my body has taken sacking speed out he's full pulled up new there let's go to Chris economy [Music] okay I'm down here with jr. Johnson things are not going well for Dells Union want you to be the problem well right now thank you scars either loose or pushing one we don't know which were cozy Hanson told us what I think you know just find a little time so we get a pit stop to just attach it there's nothing wrong with the car you can fix that with a wrench just crew we get a fifth stop with just attention because ER okay you have your Johnson not ruffled it all about down to the max again that's exactly what David Hobbs talked about at the top of the show because of the difference in the temperature today makes a difference in how those cars will handle smoker down and turnip it can dragons laying a ridiculous semen smoke he must be able to see that his rear view mirror here steady coming up on the smoker that's his son Kyle directly in front that number 44 car has backed up the 16th position we've ever reported a few moments ago now he had progressed up to about 12 and get backed up a little a guy who's really come on strong we sort of let that lie as Bobby Allison who started loving behind the body and 34th place heat up to 30 kyle petty I hear a ton of Richard Petty Kyle do you take an easier racing against your fathers and you do with the other competitors out here [Music] at the type of deal where you know I don't think he'd go cut me off as bad as maybe somebody else would but you know I don't think he gives that much more to me and I don't give that much more than him than you would anybody else this Kyle Petty nipping down underneath Ron Bouchard in the 47 petty so much Ken Reagan coming in because this is a bit of a make-or-break year for Kyle Petty I feel he you want his first at a race right here on the super speedway in the ARCA race but since then his Racing's been a little bit different the rally with the Wood Brothers this year an absolutely first-class effort away from the family influence I think there's going to be a very important year the karfedix there's Richard Petty's car number 43 and there you see Bouchard twitching a little as it comes off to her number board Bouchard in the 47 car great pictures out of Richard Fenton guy oh they come into the tribal lineups locked in seven-time winner here at Daytona here the fans are not being illusions they're those cars are moving around that bunch out on the racetrack leaders another time that the dodge number 67 Morgan Shepherd riding that car today Audie errington car bouncing out of the way [Music] cale yarborough now stays first bill Ali at maintaining the second position David or some third of the maker in port we'll be back with more but they don't a 500 after this commercial message and a word [Music] I'll be honest up too late yeah I'll tell you that's a heck of a race from Phil Collins is the real NASCAR right now right all right can we get this pin through 12 the 43 the 3 the 47 begins a good in job just as we Richard Lenny or instantly Yeah right right that's correct yeah all the action is taking place I see ricky rudd seats are broken as me you gotta know his name is Teddy leads that group heading in Earnhardt here and Bobby Allison come up in Kobe well gonna beat you at 500m that's gonna last lecture now believe it another 15 laps everybody the pitch up [Music] but what position is bowed I'm 23 [Music] I just know the light up there [Music] have a look at it back of regicide is John Kennedy we're back with you live 26 now 27 bundling off the line complete Elliott Garber off in front they continue to spin off the lead walking back and forth in these two four Thunderbirds back in that rest of the race the third position Pearson board positions Baker they stay together real stories back and fifth actually Richard Petty is pulled away a little in fifth and you're looking at sixth place here and from Richard Petty's car you look back at the sixth position Allison Earnhardt Bouchard Evans i season out back there in six Ned Jarrett they have been changing around quite a bit and just moments ago teddy was right in the thick of that battle but he was able to break out of him a pull away in that very unusual yeah because he worked his way right up duda bunch of cars got into front and proceeded to pull away so that makes you think with Richard Petty's car as always in his Daytona 500 an incredibly strong [Music] through 20 laps 50 miles is reported by NASCAR 195 point 2 to 8 miles per hour the leaders brought it down a little there buddy baker at Oldsmobile has come up to third David Pearson to fourth Richard Petty and fit Allison join us six [Music] are for well another one of the favorites in this race Darrell Waltrip who's the winningest driver in Grand National race University and Wanda's 500 as it was it's 13 seconds of being lapped by Bill Elliott with to be absolutely disaster so he really needs a courses like way to make them of Justice burger what everyone's on today Elliott would be told to come down run is strong after the 125 qualifier very one-dimensional messes getting on the program it tails will ago we run with it kale is making them really run faster perhaps 29 to to really punish his automobile team and you wonder it really almost 200 miles an hour how much punishment is he giving into the cars handling so well in the turn so is your car extra cardboard early if you run off a very unnatural afloat a fat the worst thing you can do you lose concentration is not very if it doesn't help the cart I think we leave you guys are racing weld in there and their cars paper 29 the two laughter sleep the man who was broken away from the big draft is Richard Petty maintaining his position infinity right now he's gaining on the third fourth place cars and Buddy Baker and David Pearson here you are riding wind Richard Petty into the back straightaway down behind Lake Floyd when right up against the wall and flying to overhaul fourth place man David Pearson third place driver Buddy Baker and those are the man he's after is great to see the David Pearson car winter here in a great battle with Richard Petty back to 1976 in theory they should be in the better position because there has got a perfect two car drop setup and Richard all on his own but he is definitely making ground on and Bobby out and it's going away with him - he's broken away from the group Bobby Alex is coming up from 34th position on the grid he making a fine run for the prepare for the front here by car team has had its problems but it seems to be getting straight down there your leaders still Elliott a number amazing pirata Georgia people the entire operation the end of last year the last for my braces number 31 bull's eye pillow slingshots remember he started dead last his father's name is jr. Johnson not the same as the gentleman up here with cars 11 and 12 not the same Carolina Johnson that we know of more problems board is from North Carolina I make it now that Darryl Walsh it's only about 17 seconds away from being black he must be getting pretty desperate 4:43 Richard Petty Alison in the 22 car who's won the Daytona 500 [Music] I can't believe we're going to stay at this speed they deescalate a little on nine and eight but they are just kicking those cards right at over 190 miles an hour here's your dropping inside there's the Dodge the single Dodge car I keep hearing stories a couple of years dodge will have a super sleek race car out here out here in 1987 they do have a car that might be conducive to these kind of speeds another car coming down pit road right now by Alexander and row number 84 having some early problems here as he rolls in the 54 change a tire well Iacocca being head of the Chrysler Group I just can't believe that as a fan of racing because he was such a major force in towards raising two decades ago I would certainly hope they bring in a team they have to one for body areas carry their tolerance through victims then year after year when they just didn't have the pieces to really go racing but berries and hung it out because he'd like to race that particular part well I'm sure that factory group is going to be back interacting with so much emphasis in Florida now from General Motors on the cup I'm sure that cries together join them there the boards and you saw the GM products running out there for a moment David Pearson settles in with his Chevrolet and Buddy Baker with his Oldsmobile as the battle continues here in the 27th annual Daytona 500 splattered and shattered by these two men number 9 there is traitor in the juni Don Lemon great grape you sack stock car driver spring try drivers getting overhaul the only rookie in the race later yet he lapped by Bill Elliott his Ricky Rudd and Kyle penny into the pitch the first the scheduled pit stops done 33 laps I should have thought they could have done the bit longer than that here's Mike joy this will be unscheduled pit stop you see a little bit of paint on the left side of Kyle's car where he made contact with somebody twice face job right-side tires and fuel that standard on a first flag thailand's away wouldn't in he got run over that was a deadbeat mom ii picked up quite a long stuff but not to back car number 28 coming out of control hey Leon also in is Tim Richmond's number 27 Ken Schrader is pitting as we're up to a fifth off time in the race everybody changing right-side rubber as well as pudding-filled on board mechanic had a little trouble getting the rod front off Patel Yarborough's car that cost him an extra second or so funny because I was shot his he's gonna have to go around he's allowed to back up a bit lanes but he is well he's backing it up there but that's going to cost him a lot of extra time as they are let's go to Chris economy now develops that the courts are not getting the mileage the Chevrolet or the other GM cars are getting the first cars to stop for fuel I've been before to the city of factor as this race unfold thank you course a couple of the Chimel a step in if we see David Pearce going out here Jeff who died who won yesterday sportsman 300 taking on fuel and of course the right-side tires on his car and most of us will see the same scope down days they can't change the tires as quickly as they can add 20 gallons of gasoline there you are with Jeff Wood itís been running just a little in the very high to very far coming back on the here's Calliope relax pitstops the order of the day there's bill Elliott's number nine as matter Stan asked our score reports Elliott first Richard Petty and second Rusty Wallace getting lapped 1984 Rookie of the Year driving forklifts Stewart apparently Elcom he did he got some fair range on that jar he's 135 let him hang up really worked on that it has been said for a couple of years and in fact it's been proven that the course didn't get the General Motors car give but Bill Elliott and his brothers went to work on that and towards the end of 1984 they were getting at least as good a gas mileage as the General Motors car let's run a few extra let's possibility of missing a caution which he didn't hear today so they changed the right-side tires on his car many bargains coming down pit road fluid Phil Parsons Joe Ruttman in hair again so this year's gift enough time they would many up would hope to make and it look like the car died when they took it off the jack he got quickly fired and is heading back out into the long stuff though 16 second stuff for which is quite a long stop it's still one of the most important teams in auto racing today I mean there's such an inspiration to everyone homegrown family team that comes out here runs up in front here's my joy Raymond beetle champion drag racer at corner protuberance when you had a long pit stop with the hood up what's the problem we change the motors just before we gamer we broke a piston light yesterday and the float was stuck on the carburetors which it didn't get time to run enlarged hopefully we'll be okay now the returners gap that seems the carburetor now with usually sugar losses came through the fuel pressure okay Raymond beetle the man who's getting the range 43 Richard Petty he's still out here now remember what's up on any spanking Richard Petty went all the way to the wall it turns three and four well he's giving some sort of a signal there now in apparently he's about to come into the pit he was just waving to one of the drivers that he passed there's that okay everything's are see if penny will fit here and here if he's sorry and I think he's headed for pit road Richard Petty number 43 he's always higher down he put it into third gear now he's coming back into second gear that helps to slow the car down even hits the black coming off of this before you come off there and get himself in trouble but he's done it many times ready on your watches only entry pit stop no one has done it more is that's the car in first gear [Music] fluid in himself they clean off the windshield there usually makes it light on that rag there it is just about exactly the same as Beleriand there is going out right down the road Moose Jaw drag race down pit road [Music] holding the stop-and-go flag out of the end of that just racing side by side as he maybe changing the gears now he's in third gear about the fifth back to fourth he'll run it up to about 7500 rpm now 19 more years here is Darrell Waltrip in depends if you beat this Chris Johnson is working on the adjustment of down walk-ups car jacking the weight around and trying to make this car handle better tires gasoline this wrench right here is what you're taught to use the clients leg three or four four miles an hour into that car welcome back on the track we'll see if it works back to you Ken and what he was doing Chris was taking wedge out of it so they call he was taking weight off the left rear so junior wasn't sure if the car was pushing or the back England has taken some weight off let him grow through the currents a little prayer taking weight off the left rear will defenitely make it a bit looser we [Music] okay Breivik puts them into the private area then team up at the back end hearing the body coming into the business and car number 44 even the leader Terry Labonte has briefly had the lead Phil Parsons and momentarily it's all the cars are under green and we may be on our way to a new record for 505 so there is a mangy did six more laps until earlier then which is going to be a major factor in this race just sending out that bill for some seawater as matters now stand car number five is being shown as the leader after these pit stops will be back an update you on the leaderboard after these messages that can't be right - car number five is now now they changed moil number not down so far it can't be right I can feel why are we why is the leaderboard so long yeah that's not right hey old highway but five is almost a lap down he can't lead no no no no he's not leading he's not leading he's made no way yeah that sounds a lot better 189 28 9 743 28 9 743 please go ahead on a ride back to Delaware there were twenty eight nine nine 7:43 [Music] Walter has been left if anybody's in her place no bodies and third way rigid yeah and then Richard my body had a tremendous hit stop the body is in third not pile 44 beautiful body astern there's 10:43 now Donny slow it down I think Richard is yeah Richard is now my body slowed down yeah well a little bit nice pick back up but Richardson third now when they came by here a moment ago it was the other way [Music] after the first fit period coming under dream sorted him out Cale Yarborough and Vallely are still locked together they scored Thunderbirds leading terry labonte it moved to third moment ago Richard Petty screamed her out of its petty back up into third Terry Labonte back to fourth is right in the midst of that hunt and Ron Boozer over one five with David Hobbs and that jarred I'm Ken Squier and we're seeing the likely stumble here and the Daytona International Speedway between the onslaught of these two drivers Cale Yarborough in the 2809 and will Elliott well they're averaging over 193 miles an hour taking into consideration the pit stop car number 10 does everyone the ordinary to problems here 192 murari's for 100 miles including a 16 second pit stop of the process all that slowing down all they're getting is a tremendous amount of time if the 16 second pit stop brilliant more like a 35 second business Richard Petty car number 43 my name is Ron Bouchard pulling in for a pass here's Bouchard looking like he wants to make a move Ron who shot in the 47 as you look at the ballots a third quicker to do that three and goal that here's Mike joy before he retired from active top positions and dirty was America's most famous racecar driver now he builds any type cars and beginning this season dr. hodgins for America's most famous shot car driver Richard Petty what a gamble it's a changing engines on race morning just before the cars roll off I really love all of gamble we could come up with we had a small leak rather than try and repair not and not only did we change as we knew this vision was a good one there were no leaks the file on your face you're obviously very pleased by how Richards running right now I feel like we've been thrown into the deep end to say the least and I'm not really very very tickled away Richard's going at the Modi's running a little bit faster than the leader so but it's early in the race dan dirty Dan Gurney knows a little bit about stock clocks of ever-ending 68 took a 4-2 jurnee building the entrance rat number 43 cars of my curved car it stays very much of on in bird position there you see now Bobby Allison pulling up into fourth car number 22 [Music] believe me damn 37 he was running a little bit faster than the leaders he needs to pee himself after that round of pit stops he's running a little over 16 seconds behind those who Lords of failure and fellow seeds of junk to the limit that down to mid Cruz 193 on Montana maybe the heat spectrum hezron boo shot coming up s on Bouchard at number 47 the jackal using like tired and left rear tire flat number 47 Bouchard comes on to pit road this happening as the they're working the 48 laps I can't believe we have that four engines but the weather is perfect out here Ned an absolute perfect perfect day no question about it we see a crack and Richard paid his windshield and that could become a problem there's a tremendous amount of pressure on the windshields at the speeds that they run here we'll keep an eye on and then see if it does get worse as time goes by to give you an idea the pressure on the windshields the other day when AJ points none of the eye on race his windshield pull out over the top of the grandstand there the leaders early opera holding down lead looking for his 82nd career win third in a row consecutive wins under four stalks from 1968 and now there's bouchard's car it was a little more than a tire a flat tire or if they have a hood up on it trying to see if they can find out what the problem in this look like Charlie you're coasting into the pit maybe the ignition or something went out of and no like it was a bit down on the left here's my joy what's the problem with Ron's car probably same as it's all my acquittal and they're working down the areas of distributors trying to get who starts re-fired he's flipping the toggle trying to get it to crack and it won't they continue to work on it here on pit road going away from the feel and record-shattering speed Cale Yarborough and Bill Elliott huckleberry just holds on at second place from the Goodyear blimp you see the leaders fighting it out on the 31 degree banking the world center of Speed Florida moment [Music] Bouchard out where's the 43 and 22 I just out of here they're coming up turn to now and they're about Fishman Bobbie Fishman 1643 and 20 to 16 seconds down on the lead okay great thank you so last time we went this long without a caution Richard Petty of that Bobby Allison I got really hooked up there now and that dropped the third spot [Music] got a new record [Music] [Music] record find me and over that's press box [Music] who's on the press box who's onto the press box Bobby old record at 50 laps while of them pulling away from Dow maybe two laps down [Music] fifty-two on the 200 laps of it completed in the 1985 they told a hundred 125 mile mark these leaders are averaging 191 point five seven one miles per hour you may be witnessing the fastest 500-mile race in history the record 177 bottle our average established by Buddy Baker in 1980 here at Daytona 191 571 - the first 125 miles now you're looking at the third place battle Bobby Allison is up to third the two-time winner and the seventh of Kyle Petty is showing some smoke that's the Wood Brothers car and fourth Cowell has been running very well here all day but this is definitely an unscheduled pit stop and smoke coming from it he was running in the fifth position he was running very very strongly right under his father with Bobby Allison saying but it looks pretty terminal an amount of smoke unless it is an oil line dropped off but be wishing to my second 40cm a little problem number 90 Ken Schrader now number 7 3 9 of a car now the Wood Brothers car the hood up situation Richard Petty maintaining fourth Bobby Allison third there the leaders another time closing on Bobby whoa I and there's that cracked windshield on Richard Petty as he closes in on Bobby Allison another time here's Mike joy with Ron Bouchard Ronny what happened we're not really sure Mike we were just coming down to front straightaway there it just lost all power we're not sure if it's the battery or busted cable so they're going to try to change the battery and the problem with that is weight distribution the battery is located behind the driver and low in the chassis protected by a steel case they've got to take off the wheel and get in there to change it they work on the Bouchard car as we watch numbers twenty eight and nine continued a hurdle away from the field what a performance by these two teams go to the car scanner just handling beautifully the third that of course to have the whole car to carry as well you're just a perfect popsicle great fit up that every driver like to have they absolutely they change the to upside sizes right that makes up that ominously having proper about handling at all James quad love today I guess these through this book yeah which one's gonna win the right but there is a long five laps to play further back the fifth position is now shown as Dale Richard Childress car moving into sixth position is Neil bottom a lot of into six in seventh is Lake speed eighth history of the body ninth is Benny Parsons intense is Joe Ruttman 11th is arrogant and twelve is Phil Parsons again whatever the problem was on how a guitar they worked on it and he's gone back out into the [Music] over here le ah Brenda Hill I am putting a lock down now and get paid I missed a 300-mile winner as well as these two guys another 20 cars on the lead lap 20 2011 Chris Takata back he isn't Bobby Allison spit me out early manager carriers you only got thirty seven laps out of your first tank of fuel the pores are getting a little bit less than the body is getting a full 100 miles out of the position well we we wanted to be on the safe side plus we want to stay honest in the draft that we were in when we did it we can get better mileage than we did on that first stop it goes three all the way I think we'll be okay can you make can you make just if it stays free can you go the distance people are stopped it looks like we could get over 100 miles those we stretch a little bit on each one we'll be right there yeah but that first stop is always the most critical and we definitely wanted to stay on the safe side there Darryl Walsh in there about to be lapped by Richard Petty and signalling frantically through the window to get ready to try and get the draft I'm sure I can see him waving at Empire he might have been just waving imbibe and I think you exclaiming to try and get help cause that's probably a litter up in front of Richard David now we're looking out of the back Petty's car near a Walter Richards who puts our laws of the land and goes out on a hang on now to put himself back into contention long trip second here at 79th leaders getting into heaven they asked Vallely about the motor in that car number nine he's number 98 is in with the boys car dr. Brenda's car on pit road with another motor let me know and if this is another of the cars they was damaged in one the fall migration year on Thursday they work Freddy Baker back in position once again he's about to go a lap down as Dave Marcus is lapped in the 71 Buddy Baker was running such a strong for the most part of this race before the Pinto and here he is just 25 minutes later being put a lap down well he overshot him Phil Elliott the number and I would say he didn't want to know I got a bill that he might know a little company about what's under the hood there you see the number Ford car which is running in tenth place the reporting Joe Ruttman that was on the 50 lap rundown Joe Ruttman and the TG Shepard fired who sponsorship new team that's really come together on the orders of a year ago - Tommy yellow straw Robin stop smoking badly this is a good job that we do the traffic trying to hook up with Benny Papa 55 looks like John was about to come to the stuff he why he wants that car for his banking apparently he saw the Pope coming promised and he wanted to get us closer to make a good roof in the wall out hundred your post you're better off to be close to that Wallace you guys are Lutheran's you that's right back with the leaders and other time tries to get his car around the track it back into the pit area cale yarborough stays up in front looks like he just like good [Music] because the first man to do so they're going to get child penny the black flag Elliott goes for the lead another time Bill Elliott back in front remember he's only won four Grand National race what an impressive way sir what an impressive human being is he certainly has this all-american boy no place in fact very department very quiet time but he could plant remember a lot of smoke out seven child Petty's car Quentin sir number one and a black flag out for me here indicating board is on for file Teddy you love to bring it on in car number four Joe Ruttman and his third year in 82 that car is off in speed as well Elliott first jabiru second Allison third petty remains in fourth Harold kinder there on the flag stand overlooking procedures here now buddy bag is kind of want to try and hang on he's right with in touch which he seems to be capable of young because if they throw another caution flag it was given a slight chance to unlap himself coming to the line which of course to give his lap back here's Killian Baker goes flowing by him back are they one down Haley Arthur was blowing up Kagura was out of it down into the first turn he's out of the throttle here he is slowing down for me to turn number one and Shaun Baker spooked by him definitely something azimuth in that car we recorded that in in all of the practice in the qualifying he was having overheating problems in the class but then he ran the full 125 mile race hope they have that problem cured that there is something wrong whether that's it or not to conceive leave the car back and forth game on pick up fuel 62 laps have been completed daily Agron there is the lonely leader Bill Elliott in car number nine and they are a lonesome team they don't work with anyone else or would like to have them share things around four teams the Elias was no part of that here's Cale Yarborough coming on to pit road then running up in front all day he'll run when his own right now the number four car [Music] not go into the garage area he stays at your taste the right side national apparently he had a flat tire that's why he was weaving they could to help in tire with low but to have inner liners will be fired which was made to get back to the pitch this will put penny into second Bobby Allison up to third the armored having a little trouble getting restarted imagine a car no I'm not going there well the car has stalled never pushing it down pit road Hale tried to pull out he popped the clutch and the car stalled they can't get it required still pushing kale pops the clutch again and it does not catch and they lost about half a lap one lap down down JP Lundy Harry Munir car being pushed back to city manpower 600 horsepower we're under pressure rating situation this is to have a car there's running as well at that time then all of a sudden you get a and the nerd Chuck Woolery fire now they're having to push him back into the pit area the warning once again Elliot first any second Allison third Dale Earnhardt in fourth Bona T and fit Benny Parsons up to six Lake speed in seventh terms of audio name Ricky rod at night bill Parsons attend and there is second third to the Giants to the Masters of this game Richard Petty the seven-time winner here at Daytona and he's looking right out his back window at car number 22 two-time winner of the event Bobby Allison whenever he wanted here in 82 in their door Berman if I'm wondering if they misinterpreted his problem when he came in maybe was not in mind we couldn't see that although the heavy and a lot of tires that therapist they're doing some other work look like you're headed back to the garage area drama what can be the fastest 500 in history continues here at Daytona more in a moment [Music] yeah I think that's what they did they just misinterpreted this his problem what he'd batad can you trade him it came back and had him in they put him back out did they River I don't know he's never gonna go well he was in for a problem they had an 81 so we put him back down he got behind the wall no no no no no he's on pit road I think it's normal pissed off honey maybe I don't think he was in for an extended period we got left there you know we talked about that then shortly after that he came into pits but well now what's this going to do to Bill Elliott being on his own nobody did rough it out there and destroyed and I don't I don't think yeah yeah it was like the feel from you yeah well you've done he got on his old thing he's gonna go to the likes of sweeper train when I could I would like to see for the number 12 car number three car guys where we have four leaders nine 4322 play all and and number number three [Music] can we get me records now we have got a 22 second lead right now I think move out and I go second sit busting tell you the Bundys in the pit keep on edge you're here oh boy oh go on behind all the bodies on the body at the TV tower they're going to work on six foot work there's Brooks and to pay the enterprises car in the pits CDL Sport special is sponsored by old milwaukee and old milwaukee life it doesn't get any better than this Skol long cuts smokeless tobacco easy to use with a great taste that could only come from schools and by Pennzoil motor oil quality protection 68 laps complete of the 200 pedra develops go to Mike joy Cale Yarborough is in the garage very unhappy to be standing here so early in this event what happened well I don't know Jeffery lost the film all around a gas but something went wrong with the engine gave me no indication whatsoever and he just locked up almost on a pit stop it looked like it was running when you came into the pit then when you pop the clutch to take off it sees ya was running but it wasn't on a stillness probably six of them soon who is your bet to win this race you had a chance to run a draft with Bill Elliott some of the other cars well bill a doesn't have any competition now nobody leaving on close to it that's what they said about kale last year and he did run away let's go to Chris O'Connor back down here with car 44 it's behind the pit wall if being worked on by a battery of mechanical subjects the foot is up trying to body a City at the wheel waiting for these repairs to be completed what's wrong Terry Krista the clerk started slipping I think we've got an old leak or something that's getting all in the clutch okay there you have it right from the primer he hopes to get back into this one segment fixes unbelievable the amount of work in force more boxes over here the hall to make a repair job back to you gets directly behind the tip wall there's number 88 where they're working on the 144 livadas car Baker coming back on the track now major they count I was telling what Elvis in secret kata Noi they've drilled the clock ahead they put ship and head back in for this week right here in the garden today done gibberish but is it a law when driving on the side a car number 27 first caution comes in lap 71 they also have off the cars Tim Richmond in the Raymond beetle number 27 coming down to a halt 800 feet out of turn number two in the first caution of the day in this 200 lap million-dollar 500-mile race is brought out for Tim Richmond's automobile and Kim he's sitting there right now just hoping that all those drivers will go on the outside of him the pit stops the second round we're just coming up David Pearson was caught in two PS during this caution that's going to he and Buddy Baker had made scheduled pit stop trigger on within a moment ago all the rest on will be coming in as soon as they slow down caution is out for the first time 1985 Daytona 500 in our lives CBS coverage Bill Elliott trying to dominate Richard Petty line second Bobby Allison and third alley and it pulled away to a pretty handsome lead here you see Tim Richmond evacuating the fourth place driver is Neil Bonnett Neil told me this morning they had gone back and rebuilt their qualifying motor and installed it in car number 12 nice I think I've got a chance of winning this thing but everybody has been covered thus far by Bill Elliott big place car in the field is Earnhardt and they to exhaust they had discovered some secrets this morning on the Richard Childress car from the in-car camera of Benny Parsons Ned take a look at this David here's how would we see Richmond up in Sunday into the wall apparently he had a tire to go down or he got too hot in what they call the loose stuff that would be the rubber and Parsons ghost on the inside and Tim Richmond stays up on the wall for Parsons hoping he would do that and sure enough he did there's another angle it just grinds out he keeps us up at the wall he did a good job in holding on the wall which is obviously an essential thing he kinda still wandering across the racetrack but of course did not only have not always have control of report from Mike joy we're very Dodson Tim Richmond crew chief what does him say caused the crash he told us about two laps before he cracked after we put the new tires on that something was vibrated shaking as he went in the corner and evidently the car broke a wheel he said it was it was fine and then it was in the wall and there's nothing he could do about it it felt like it broke the wheel and you know it was a brand new wheel apparently they're out for the day race drivers are unique people but none perhaps more unique than the driver of car number 27 Tim Richmond has a style all of his own it's just something that it doesn't affect me it doesn't intimidate me I thrive on competition I mean it's like I'm addicted to competition the competition here on this boat on the cigarette is the wave me trying to fly one wave and miss the next one to get to the next one Tim Richmond knows only one way to go all-out his lifestyle is to say the least different from the other Grand Nashville drivers even his home I got at Fort Lauderdale race cars and boats they all they go fast but in a boat you've got the ocean that conducts business the way it wants to fire on Richard Petty's car number 43 on pit road a fire on Richard Petty's car number 43 it is caught on fire leaving our feature for a moment problems for the King here today Kenny had just made a pit stop they were having to push it down pit road they couldn't get the car fired and Peggy now inside trying to get it cranked up they're putting the hood back down on so apparently they got it out very quickly let's see if it will fire and he's able to pull away we are under caution from the incident created by Tim Richmond he's having problem with the shifter Clyde again I'm going to write back out - go for it he's propagated in any gear that impossible again as the crew price efficient down now there's called again here's Chris okay what happened to Ricky penny but I believe the pitcher would not start so the crew members were pushing it and the snow would start so one of the crew members got a spring enemy helps the car start and he sprayed under the hood with ether of the ether caught fire now the engine is running and a big brought back because the damage your families have done under the hood a tough break for King Richard here now there's a replay and there's where they're spraying the ether in down that they have a little tube that goes down into the carburetor so there will help it fire quickly once again but of course it caught on fire this time and now they have that gear shift problem if they're pushing it back down pit road you can see penny still trying to get the car in comes lower gear as they push it back Tim Richmond being brought in [Music] we get out of their car limit earlier I'm above the sand bank that separates the racetrack from Lake Lloyd here at the Daytona Speedway but once the records got there you can fall back in and ride back with the garage er Richard Petty's car resting back on pit road administered to not many people around it now anytime you have an accident like in Britain the best thing is to get away from the car as quickly and as far away as possible well let's pick up that feature about Tim Richmond as we left off with that late-breaking development here in the bedding store Tim Richmond knows only one way to go all out his lifestyle is to say the least different from the other grand Nashville drivers even his home I got at Fort Lauderdale race cars and boats they all they go fast but in a boat you've got the ocean that conducts business the way it wants to it conducts the business of the boat and the driver in the boat compared to what the race car is the driver is conducting the business with the racetrack and the race car keep you going now Tim Richmond's daily training program is uniquely Tim Richmond I'm not here for the women I'm not here for I'm here to get Tim Richmond body totally in shape and mentally in shape which is going to help me on the racetrack and off the racetrack and actually you know it probably is better for me in there with 30 girls because if I start slowing down and they're still doing it as hard as they are and I kind of start giving up a little bit it keeps me going because I'm like I don't look bad from them diet you've changed your diet I've changed it 180 degrees brown rice with raisins and bananas in the morning I come back after my workout I'll have some steamed potatoes broccoli onions peppers whatever and anything just spaghetti noodles and that's it you put the nutrition and the exercise together and you're right there it is a different life than other stock car racers and it bears the special stamp of tip Richmond I do like some of the nicer things of life I could this is where I live in a tent someplace but I'd rather if I had the money to live on some yacht someplace and have them maybe a Learjet I don't have that yet but I'm working for [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Tim Richmond coming out of the Daytona 500 David his best shot Richard Petty meanwhile is coming back on the track at number 43 he lost on the left during the caution period at least two laps but thank goodness that problems happened under caution of course he would've been in the fifth had there not been a caution all the drivers made a caution made pit stop during this caution period they went under the hood of both Darrell Waltrip and Harry Gant car making adjustments on those cars and we're about ready to go back right one of course it's not have been and picked up under the green Richard Petty with lost about nine laps said Richard Petty they're reporting only has fourth gear locked up in fourth gear the record that is kept here at Daytona for 50 laps the old record was 1983 Richard Petty at 188 point nine one seven miles per hour the new record at that junctures 50 laps 125 miles is 190 one point five seven one miles per hour the next record perhaps tumble was a one hundred seventy three point five one one which went to 1980 held by buddy bake the 100 it's got to come back after that one problem he had it lost a several laps of course no chance of winning this Daytona 500 but he wants to rack up as many of us again as they line up on a restart David Pearson the grand silver box is out in front Kenny Schrader's car lap down overnighting there's number nine Bill Elliott now in second 12 cars are reported in the lead lap running in the third place they come around for a start would be the Bobby Allison car Allison running in third healbot it should be up there in for Benny Parsons for fifth Earnhardt four six seven as they come down for start Lake speed eight bill Parsons ninth AJ point santeri Gant he'll coming to the line as they prepare for a restart years military parsons armory strike as they come into the prior over [Applause] just on the inside [Music] so after the first caution of the day we are racing once again we Narada complete last 78 seemed to be interesting to see after some of those adjustments by some of the Chevrolet drivers if they will be able to run with Bill Elliott now would be an example very sizable leave before that Coffee number 21 Pearson Eliot right with him what do you think that well will the other day into 125 Marty Elliott looks so good before David pairs and looked a little bit on yourself that very far I mean 1600s Ricki rod is right there the bookmark for 15 with red and white colors this year Bert's Blackpool still hangs in there strong well right had just made a pit stop here in the green flag period before that caution came out I think that he might be a lap down in his own number 15 Ricky Rudd here's Chris Akata back I with Hoss Allington David Pierce's car owner and crew chief he's leading a race right now Hoss the port's have it on the cars if the court passes will David be able to hang on number nine for a back bumper and take a shot at winning I hope so Chris you know Billy is awful strong you been strong all week but I believe when we get stretched I'll be running right now a nice day we might be a lap down [Music] four-four time ago Eliot David Elliot Jeff what is a lead Davis now second did you make any adjustments on the car that would make it better oh yeah we made some judgements on Kristen I just hope it does good without technically Chevrolet I tell you is you know yourself a strong field with are we gonna give a run for the money okey-dokey now down pit road to Mike joy and Elliot pit Bernie Elliot's waiting for his car to combine things look to be going just about to plan for you folks everything's going pretty good cars running good try to be careful stay out problem well this isn't like Thursday's race when he ran off and hid from the crowd but it looks like he's able to get the lead whenever he wants it now engravings mylanta [Music] I don't think everybody figured all along in me run away but I never really felt that way you had to try to keep him in check and keep him from running away from the field well not really you know it's never tonight and it was Thursday you know a little but we'll win to contend with and make the car handle a little bit worse and you know everybody's starting to get their cars dialed in pretty good now you know it's just I think it's just a matter of time today you everybody gets adjusted up it's not gonna be easy look Bernie earlier that ones didn't notice is he pretty saying that his brothers pulled on a second and a half in one lap mandersohn car reported as being a lead lap with Ali won't be putting a lap down well yeah he put him a lap down when he passed him the second bird Dale Earnhardt is in the pit he actually was fighting a second place and to update the fans a reason Pearson was the left hand he was called into the pits we reported that when the caution came out he was making a regular pit stop so he went a lap down here's Dale Earnhardt and the car number three who has moved into the second position now that was real bodies up into the second horn honking bonnet one of those guys has always been a bit of a sleeper here he and Terry Labonte with a two favorite Chevrolet doesn't look like this race unwinds he's right there in a strong second Scott Elliott for first Parsons in second we'll be back before my flight apply coverage of the 27th annual Daytona 500 after this word from your local stations three different beer brands in the first three places followed by smokeless back all those vices right up there money shoes 22 is slowing down and turned 3:22 way off in turn 322 now in the core he done blowed up [Music] yes Patti's and I travel to Allison the ride was Richard I'm saying he was lying down as well yeah he did [Music] [Applause] Richard Petty [Music] with 83 of 200 laps complete the incredible pace of this Daytona 500 is catching up with some of the Giants Richard Petty looks like he's retired he's brought the car in and Bobby Allison is on to throated back to the garage area as well just a lap ago Allison slowed down took his car into the garage area you see Richard Petty's steering his brought into the place that they didn't want to be for at least for the next couple of hours Allison right in front of him Bobby Allison Richard Petty both retired just past the 80 live mark with number nine Bill Elliott continuing to dominate destroy the competition here today that car is running so well ever since they unloaded it off the truck about 10 days ago even though they had a little bit of trouble in the clash last week there's a point in the car number 14 for having one of his better runs in recent years 10 is right after qualifying he's david.aileen up to full spot has been running from the old boy battling with Betty Parsons like speed is right there to number 75 point has just moved around Lee many times here's Carson's coming in at number 55 I think you're right in the face that they've been sitting here today is really taking its toll more than anybody expected as you see Parsons we're riding right with him into the garage area another place he didn't want to be at this point again three al-anon back on pit road he was running strong as well the gate closed on Betty Parsons even get into the pit area much less fight himself in victory lane there's number three black on pit road another time Richard Childress told me this morning that they had found the rock and the mule too and they thought that number three was really going to get the program done things were a binson air hood is up meanwhile Elliott who came here for the first time in 1976 didn't amount to much that year they then come together with Roger Penske bought some parts in 1977 and that began the brain of the land leads him to this year sitting on the pole winning the 125 and for coming the third driver history when the mall sighing rates to 5-under only two others and the only trouble will keep him at a victory lane today because the car just working so beautifully handling well running well on the straightaway should go to old boy well he has got a little time point but he's obviously setting an incredibly fast pace by the way we've just seen four or five of the top runners go back behind the wall after that is a long way to go yet but he sure is looking good so far Mike joy is with Benny Parsons Benny in the garage early is turning about 78 79 hundred rpm all day what happened something happened to the engine Mike I really don't know felt something like maybe a piston problem I really do you got a lot of gauges here that can monitor what the car is doing when it's running right but nothing to tell you what it's wrong well no all the gauges were okay with the engine would it was smoking smelling and felt like the zone about four cylinders so Eliot's well out ahead of the field who else would you pick to win this race today I really don't know you know I think I was a group of cars that was you know pretty good Neil bun looks pretty good 275 for our legs feet looks like he's running pretty well look at the trio of former winners here Benny Parsons Bobby honest and Richard Petty in the garage there's Earnhardt's number three still seeking his first one of the state Auto 500 1980 Grand National Champion after being Rookie of the Year 1979 Dale Earnhardt retiring those blue and yellow colors and Bill Elliott by his lonesome all out in front dominating the Daytona 500 and for the man of kinloch all three of the four were Daytona 500 winners patty Allison and Parsons go into the garage area then a former Grand National Champion Dale Earnhardt go into the garage area I'll tell you they're dwindling down in a hurry because there's still plenty of racing and competition out on the racetrack but it's making of easier formula what is Odell the Neil Bonnett did hang on extremely well too because you don't know if that is slowing down I also ricky rudd in another court it eighty nine lakhs our doctor please in the second place car deal bottom there you see the AJ Foyt another smoker didn't turn on rock behind the AJ fort AJ pointed third Dalma caller who's had a smoker all day up there he has problems right from the very beginning here's Chris I'm a Dale Earnhardt's critter this is one of the tips that are packing up early there's no pressure no urgency tidying up curling up hoses putting tools back in the toolbox it's one of those days that have pit threw in a driver want to forget thank you the battle now is in third squad AJ Foyt and young Lake speed in car number 75 the former world karting champion lake speeding the white and blue car has been hanging right off with AJ and then in the fifth position is Phil Parsons younger brother Benny Parsons six possession brakes axes having a good day seventh is Harry Gant eighth is Ricky Rudd ninth is Buddy Baker join Santa's David Pearson and played his now slow down the Oldsmobile the huntress of pagan car is slowing down number 14 1972 they caught a winner AJ Foyt is falling out here's Mike Mike joy yeah Richard Peddie this is no place for a seven-time winner to be notice you just took a headache powder you have quite a headache today well yeah some after the thing I don't know whether it's a flywheel or the clutch or transmission something happened in that you hear time ii ounces remember it's hard to run these things in and out of the pits but all you have is fourth gear where i had four that I had for the last time without that I run through less and then the whole think of disengaged so now they're trying to get it engaged Betty Parsons Bobby Allison AJ Foyt yourself all suddenly in the garage area all former winners of this event you don't think it's a jinx ain't our day they won for cheer real good way to see what half the plan Richard Petty closing on the halfway mark Delma cowards number zero that you saw smoking on the track is coming in also see I think bill Parsons number 66 pulling on the pit road he had been right up there the top two FD a---approved up into the fifth position and he's coming down to the road not going to the garage area so maybe it's something that can be fixed on his car he was a rookie last year but he's been doing a beautiful job in one of Johnny Hayes car deer comes forth we're outside here and get us a rental car getting this thing we might not finish I think um until talking to that will be back without ask yourself have you driven a boat lately 90 laps 225 miles down the ravaging 178 miles an hour [Music] it could be what is and I diamond attrition is that the latest attrition truck can we do attrition how's the record oh we need attrition how's the record going go way up five miles now [Music] okay we have 12 cars out what are you showing 13 with foyt Hemi neuronal headings going to come back you know five and lead left his robe in the lead lamp I don't think so now he's not nothing is I know I said he was thirties no I think he's there he did now but he was he wants a therapist not him yeah [Music] Buddy Baker like now yes huh he was 2x and a prisoner 51 is that Greg sacks [Music] he's doing right he's full shouldn't have Pearson on that board Gary shorted 14 he's not putting away even bunny birth a good year blimp card where is it good okay thank you thank you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] from the Goodyear blimp enterprise you see the immense Daytona International Speedway where an immense record is being created by car number nine Bill Elliott now running five thousand or faster than the record at the 100 lap halfway jump to the race that record in 1980 my moneymaker at 173 miles an hour even with a caution they're still up around 178 miles per hour all thanks to this man from Georgia Bill Elliott in car no ride Mike joy is standing by with one of the man who thought he had a chance at it today and is now in the garage area well there are a lot of them here Ken it's like auto Racing's all-star team in the garage Bobby I want to what happened to you well I ain't blew out down there you know one of kind of disappointing days I guess the only thing Manjeet said they were off selling beer while we were waiting I hope it was feller in the garage area not the way to start what would you hope would be a championship season not too many points you get sitting here now that's true it's I you know ass and start on our run but today is over for us you know we have to thank toward next week a lot of those sad stories here the garage down to Krishna Cano Mackey I'm standing with Jim Gilmore aka sponsor Tim I understand the reason out is remarkable I've never heard of it exactly what was afraid go Chris as near as we know and we contact him over the radio the steering pros oh I've never heard that happening before the fire was running beautifully at the fourth plate yeah he was in third place and working up to third and the car was running fine yes dear as we know the steering pros I've never heard that happening well that's just trying to tell you grandfather with their running here both 205,000 steering breezes are back to you Ken a story here now is Neil about three seconds back to the leader Neil Bonnett told me this morning that they had changed and gone back to their qualifying engine they rebuilt the engine which they qualified and that one ran around here a pretty good clip and they were going to go 40 so we're going to reload the gun one more time it wanted a lot of powder well he walked my third man overall he was just behind the build Elliott cale yarborough qualifying it over 202 miles an hour and so that's the improved that he had a good strong engine and you make me work here today but a qualified holder is not necessarily the hot tip for a 500-mile race so normally it is them because they will set it up a little bit looser than the inside wooden engines that they would plan to run all day long but apparently the Hazelden farmer working well that helps to produce horsepower in her mouth there you see the deal bonded Chevrolet number 12 running in that second position holding pattern right now st. just about three seconds down as we come to the halfway mark in the 1985 Daytona 500 mile er bonus God set in a very stable great who does want to do that honey using about half the road with that he's probably good shakes metallic and here's Pearson in car number 21 heavy for the former days regarde so here's the look like it's going to be offering all the gentlemen who have been championed here before is this the year the Dyke breaks the dam finally crumbled and we have some new faces is thinned appear since the Yarborough's the alice of the Petty's to win this time after time but this young man out in front Phil Elliott looks like he could score heavily today and right behind him Neil Bonnett who's as good as you can get I believe everyone is former champions would think on a 500 already out of it now cam will check our records here just to be sure but it's amazing I'll consider this Perry Gant in the hal needham Harry Gant in the Hal Needham Burt Reynolds car finds himself up in third Lake speed into fourth brakes axes at Benton what a run by Greg sacks today Ricky Rudd is at six Darrell Waltrip 7th I wonder if being a new father has some effect on Darrell Waltrip he won't be a new father and incidentally in his confidence TV this morning and he wanted the baby coming she said Rockingham at the Paul o Shea kick a little going down into triangle whack there [Music] the attrition here has been tremendous today not to hold it all together you can see when he goes into the turns he drives the car exactly where he wants to go there's the look at the cars that are out of the race kin is started with Ron Bashar with an electrical problem Kyle Petty had an engine problem ko Yarber an engine problem course this is all unofficial as far as these reasons out of the race we've already gone out with the crash and the Bobby Allison said he had an engine problem precipitated might be coming back as they work on that car 10 turn but did you believe one of these homegrown cars and this number nine is about as far away from the Ford factory people as a car can be and not just geographically between Michigan and Georgia they keep very much to themselves there's been a considerable amount of talk about the fact of sharing ideas among those various four teams and it has been the Elliott's who said we work very hard to figure this thing out we're just country boys and we just assume keep what we know they're not about to fail in Oakland many of the grand national team located in the Charlotte North Carolina area within a 75 to 100 mile radius there and that's good because its proximity to the noise act but these fellas down in Georgia are in a good position because they don't get the knowledge pass estimate even Charlotte that's greater now on pit road in the Judy Don levee number 90 that's joined one of another of the great giants of racing with like joy well suddenly just about all the former winners here on pit road David what happened well they must have burnt a piston or something called once the smoke come out of it I'm sure it better person these things don't get much warning when they let go do that no they don't but it run real good you know I was hanging on in it I gotta go to the front I feel like except the board's you know and I was just hoping that they wouldn't finish and maybe have a would but it and then get race will most everybody out there today besides Bill Elliott the odds-on favorite who do you think as the best shot you know I don't really know of course most the time I was running you know behind we let it scale down for the third motion tab till we've hit it and let's Mark Richt you might already know they're all fronted no part of this for David Pearson the warranty on this motor expired just about an hour too early back to Ken Squier he knows heartbreak before back to 1970 when Pete Hamilton's definitive right at the finish of the race and of course back in 67 when he hadn't won then Mario Andretti came on to win and he had motor trouble Lake to race for from Daytona in a month [Music] buddy baker is the only former 500 champion is still in the race we had one two three four five yeah there's a lot of action in that pack Lake speed Greg sacks Buddy Baker they're all the day on track or we meant that why are we doing that group that's where second third and thought that's not second and third eleven own but they had 456 nothing else is in there 88 no that's the wrong group right there that's what the hell in this creepy right but not on the screen what's on the screen oh I'm sorry [Music] okay I need a little time first I need some time for [Music] strangeness settles over the Daytona Speedway we get to the halfway point of the day caught him 500 we have a new record an incredible mark one hundred seventy nine point seven one two miles per hour for this man Bill Elliott in car number nine the old record was 173 five five gone he starts putting up records like six miles an hour Ned you're really getting with the program and Elliott's coming on pit road I would say this would be a scheduled pit stop for Bill Elliott it's been about 95 miles since they made their last kiss come on it takes the lead Neil Bonnett now goes into first he flashes across the line they're still bottom lap car Ricky Rudd alongside Ronon now into the lead briefly and his pit road where the action is on car number 9 which is shattering all records in the history of this 27 year old classic tires and Philadelphus Kathleen he's already away at Richmond Ford Elliott 15 seconds very good indeed on the back to Yemen ricky rudd went by put itself back on the same lap as one of the second spot so I was assumed that bond is probably going to come in this time you seem to slow down part of it what do we have left of the old 500 winners here Ned there is only one in the field Buddy Baker is still running he's one lap down right now showing in the top 10 but he is one lap off the pace but he's the only former champion about this race there were seven of them at the beginning time here he'll phone his god this doesn't sound right to me when he went underneath stomping incline here to help it later speed is at third Greg sacks the New York driver is in fourth and Ricky rowdy and fifth a lap down and here is still on other retiree this tremendous battle best river boys who's driving the dr. Ron Binfield car course Tom out in that car for him here for James history most of the retirements so far some of the most heavily financed team because these are the guys that really go for the win and it makes you wonder whether the weather hasn't in fact really come home to roost on all these names they're all doing the same thing they're all burning misters and it must be a reason all those folks in Georgia know something nobody else knows that Christian Khanna Mackey has a different story here at the Daytona 500 I'm standing with 33 year old Dennis Myers a professional trucker from lipstick Ohio earlier today he was presented a twenty thousand dollar savings bond for the chairman of the board of the Goodyear Tire Rubber Company for being the national highway hero congratulations Dennis who rescued a man from a blazing truck on the highway if you saw the action happened in front of you how much Nicky did you do before you ran into those flames to pull that man out there wasn't much thing and I just did what I had to do and I think he'd do the same for me well that's one of these CDs drivers out there you spend your life in a steering wheel would you like to drive one of these things like a handle the pressure but I like to try it okay our national highway hero for 1985 Dennis lipstick 33 years old again aspire 30 years old of lipstick Ohio thank you Ken Neil Bonnett second-place car now on pit row actually he was the leader when he came in Bill Elliott had made a pit stop so bonnie was the leader and played speed a little farther down pit road is also in James rock side tires for Bonnie means getting a change right-side tires as well Elliott back into the lead and it looks like they're going with the for turn O'Neil - car unlock Elliott they only came to right side on him so he'll get even low fall behind recife coming out and a Pontiac car number 75 so he will move ahead upon it he was running about five or six seconds behind body now body climbing in roll in and his backing of everybody wallet cars a good run here today car number 10 before hitting us 11 laps complete any time to go until he was a long stuff for a green stuff more time here's Harry gas number 33 and a smidgen of the lead for just a second break sax number 51 he's also on pit road Elliot continuing to command this race taking place only one cautious thus far and yet this high efficient rate on holders today then well that could certainly a 52 expected they've been having to run so hard for so long not having the slowdown areas on the cost who say the body has gotten stayed back up once again and we mentioned that Greg sacks was in the pits right now he's running in the top five he had taken the lead before he came into the field this is the car that Cale Yarborough won the Daytona 500 yen a year ago today you mean bought that car from the name when they switch to the Ford product I just give it a good ride for follow Justin your technical here over 30 condo just way around this track and that Chris will be a contender but Gregg's axis a little bit loose some of the terms I think he's trying pretty hard to keep up this fantastic if missing place discard of a nine is setting up for great Saxon the 51 car will get a little earlier he's a vector this track he had a crashed calamity corner and some tire testing a few years ago broken collarbone he said he'd be in indeed he is back today running to top five I think we're seeing the change into the guard here in 1985 the Daytona Speedway I don't think there's any question about it and only one 500 winner is still in the field and he's ready to laugh off the pace that's Buddy Baker running along into sixth seventh position in any company channel the core Thunderbird Bill Elliott continues to scream in first place breaking all records with a great American race that could bar and above [Music] whose second hat again [Music] [Music] welcome Cunningham his Arrington school race [Music] sometime along it like get a shot at 67 [Music] [Music] yeah you got it right there yeah yeah yeah yeah no no he may not fit stuff 9 after all of his stops nines back from front 33 and 75 yeah that right yeah I don't have far no 75 I think that is about 15 seconds your phone [Music] 45 115 116 laps complete 84 remained to be run in the 1985 Daytona 500 as Bill Elliott in car number 9 just runs everybody into the ground car after car that is a formidable opponent in years past has already gone back to the large areas and here you see the red number nine trap Ramone and lamina last along the second-place car is number 33 his best finish previously has been six in this event Harry Gant who came on so strong at the end of 1984 now the third place car is number 75 the rock racing team for speed and number 75 maintain third Neil Bonnett fourth great Zach Smith a lap down Ricky Rudd is in the sixth position Darrell Waltrip is in seventh and Richard Brooks finding a Maurice petty car is wining and eight the car number one there's three Teddy teams out here this year some difference for the past three distinct teams yes of course not a penny in a penny Enterprise this car this year for well I guess it's the first time it's ever happened other drivers have driven you're only feeling one car this year and have a driver unique sure is Dylan Baker tiny one they Pete Hamilton of course winning for them but this year it's Richard Brooks driving for petty engineering and my curve is Richard Petty Kyle Petty's little brother Jim Paschal in that driver of the pity party won many races impending up I saw Dale in when to go yet another he's the crew chief on turn the bondage Godwin the Penney clan has spread throughout the nascar scene Dale Inman Peter was having the most successful there's Greg sacks with number 51 car and Chris is standing by with one of his relatives who's a little concerned here today Chris before the race started today this lovely looking young woman came up and tapped me on the arm and said you be sure to give my son good coverage and that's who's your son he said Greg sacks Pat sack what if you think a minute ago and you saw number 51 leading the race I can't imagine they work so hard it's really wonderful okay a happy mother here Greg sacks in fifth place now on the lead lap and that got pit road to Mike joy Tim brewer is talking with the driver Neil Bonnett right now you were the second place car when you came in and made your pit stop if you have to take on four tires now Mike we didn't have to take on four but the a bell again a vibration in the car we paired in my to kick the wheel weight off instead again limits here we got four but the vibrations are still there that's a better deal even though you let bill ileus get away well we didn't have much choice you can come back in again if we hadn't got the wrong much of a gamble we just decided to go ahead and get it straight for tyre taking on one stop instead of maybe having to make two - strategy for me Lana David Hobbs had mentioned that Bonnie's car didn't look like it was running as fast as it had been before and of course that was the reason if you had a vibration and that was a wild choice to change all for today just something that Ricky rut go through it's no point running with a serious life rate did a couple of hundred miles now because it can shake things apart very quickly and you might be up in the wall like Tim Richmond was when he met a barber's bag that is always been to stuff except 120 laps completed the 200 if you're out there you see Jimmy means in car number 52 running a couple of laps off the pace staying out here and continuing to be a competitor and grand national racing over the years and earlier Ned Jarrett asked Jimmy means what it cost him to come down here and run this Daytona 500 you know if you include all your window money and expense money and all that I played big things out dollars for us we're a big team it probably takes 50,000 folks so that means then that you do have to finish pretty close to the top to you well yeah Largo is a top ten and that's not like $20,000 for tens and I just rollin get their bills paid let's charge something again Jimmy means at car number 52 continuing to slug it out here in this big kona 562 cars signed in 40 qualified to start today's race here's me [Music] not being shorted now being shown in the 21st position here's the leader Phil Elliott in part number nine this is not exactly a make up up team but it's a well-organized strong family unit and family units over the years have always seemed to work well in racing but behind the big stories of those major super names new york stock on racing there's another 80 percent of the field that don't live quite the same way among the grand national drivers three champions whose names are known to every fan come up at every single race in a known but there are others whose goals are the very same on whose Locker is not racing his big names big business buddy bakers made over two and a half million dollars Bobby Allison and his 81 win some five million dollars and Richard Petty he's won over five and a half million dollars in posted awards but there are others driving a racecar is my way of making the living JD McDuffy by way of pudding the brittleness evil is born started 574 races has made a million dollars I'm getting thank about half as much as I'm Jesus never won a race as hardly a nickel to his name I couldn't make it without oh good woman yeah I have to cut a lot of corners by use parts run used cars knowing how to build the engines and heliplane myself s that's a big flavor right there I could never buy 15 to $20,000 engine I'd be out of business in about two races it looks to me like 150 thousand dollars - Tony Phillips assisting oh yeah a lot of my friends come by that Carla's a levain farmers and he finished it up you know really stately as much learning sponsorship tough world and the kind of people have been here before wire nuts and dirt and run for furniture and so forth they really hit me out of busting to keep going if they're old for their little sponsor Alana I would have been out before you later not enough to a front running but it gets me to track its baby more never but read all the table metaphor and racing would steal em amazing I'll never shaken time to read just like I'm tied to the home on and home our bad about were that color under the car confession he's not a quitter Johnny's not I would have quit a long time with that problem house last three years I've been running on borrowed money you know you just can't do that then I'm getting slipping a little farther back but maybe I will have some help this year where I can show up you know but it is really tough you just say somebody to me at one time nobody knows where we came from or what he's been driving and before the race is over so it started he's got all this fantastic money just because maybe he knows one person or I don't really know how I had words I always felt johnny was left out he never got a fair shake because he's got experience and he can drive the run were the best in the world you know I could probably write you and run somewhere else and run right up front you know but you ain't got the caliber competition there you know I can make the top ten in this I've really done something I told him to quit this year I begged him to quit really when I can we keep going with servos you know but then you look at him she can't stand that he's got to keep going I understand his side of it a lit up to do it it's the only thing I've ever done really beside to be in mechanic you know hands it's all I know - man the jury 50 32 weekend I blow up a car and I blow goodbye kiss binocular and she pleased that come Monday morning of the 15 all JD has a new sponsor a new car a new chance perhaps a final chance but here at Daytona the old hardscrabble luck what his pocket one more time the engine blew he failed to qualify so for JD McDuffie its leaves the crowds the glory the big money hitch up and haul a pole i-95 to try again next Sunday at Richmond Virginia now the music behind that beast was written by Marty Robbins and sung by this fella TG Shepherd who's here as part of Joe Ruttman Racing team you get a race fan for a year or two now but this is a different role for you what it's exciting I found after that the country fan is also a race fan and we had a chance to put the two together with boulders and it was open for groceries but having to be down here and worry about how one particular cars doing that little different for you yeah it's pretty double to hearing - and you got to go out to a concert tomorrow night Petey Shepard here Enzo reppin fifth part of an eye Bill Elliott just moments ago the man that was in second place number 33 the Bandit Harry Gant is another victim of this incredible pace Johnny Hayes is car owner one time told me we don't set goals because we don't like to get lights for a lot of people out there today [Music] yeah what yep that's 75 is now second Lake speed is 70 how many seconds back is he he's about 23 seconds behind 7500 five white and blue Darrell yeah who's a left yeah you got him and third is Neil Bonnett Neil Bonnett is third and Greg sacks is fourth okay and Bill Elliott it's about two seconds behind Greg sacks that put a lap on four five what position is Bodine please 11 thank you yep okay thank you [Music] [Music] records are being created today in the 27th rotting of the Daytona 500 by car number 9 will Elliott late speed is coming to second place the finest performance he has ever had in a major race Philly and has put Pat sexes son Drake down a lap so he's now not the entire family lapped up to third spot it is fantastic race still setting new records every minute Neil Bonnett is at third brake sacks just being lashes in toward Freedom Riders and fit there you see the Neil Bonnett car maintaining second position the question is how walk in that corner Verdi maintained his incredible record regularly and he is running an exceptionally fast feed but the car is working so well for him I don't think he's punishing at that much let's put late speed in the second position and Neil Bonnett in third position those three cars are on the lead lap right now and he has what about a 26 second lead over the other leg made and again been higher against atomic it's another one of the really hype up games that bitten the dust same thing credibility very highly positive machina a thought like joy is quit hairy game these engines are exploding like popcorn any chance of what the reason is well Saint Walker finds Gordon Pinsent uh and our practice ation so the less that you are able to run a car while hopefully when you try new tires when you would it would burn a piston and all day today I have been able to let it run in a wide open till the light I got in open and I got a good set of tires earned so when I ran wide open for you know those eight or ten 12 laps if therefore to piss them again you looked in like you were just riding yeah it was everything is working good a lot of cars have a lot of trouble and I just want to stay in for the finish it is really a matter who I was right at this point our surprise unit without Hollen aboard oh I got this killer with Darrell and jb5 car and sort of take it easy this they told me I moved over I want to be the rear car so they market works a little better to back and play come down to the end last down anyway so except for 75 so it is marked business there again again I think David Hobbs hit the nail on the head the difference in the different here today a way that they set those cars up 45 55 degree temperatures earlier these cars are so sensitive to difference in barometer air temperature pressures of various sorts in the air and when you come out and run at these beats David today that they're running that's what's doing the burning Phil I'm Jordan they've got the Hyatt about the team the more trick the chief mechanic always has to be to get a manager his rival I think these are the guys that probably more likely to pick themselves out of a place them but the global economy there you see the leader there you see second place that is the number 12 car an honored place tick Brooke and the number one car within the Neil Bonnett car running to third with the Richard Brooks car and the lake speed car number 75 is maintaining second we're inside Jeff Burton's car for a moment Bodine is maintaining at this time that's what is speech on the thirteenth position a couple of laps off the leaders and it's running right behind Rusty Wallace there that would be from the honestly 1984 Rookie of the Year on the grand national I don't know what 790 ran those something at say he ran very running the 125 mile race on Thursday but they don't think he just got some problems ischemia mock debate today wiped in the very beginning did the pointy boy there he is still tucked right in behind Rusty Wallace and that is a battle for 12th position they're actually fighting for a spot out there here it still is records to be made for Bill Elliott Lake speed the big surprise and second Neil Bonnett and third [Music] [Music] yes sir while the best one you've got is the 12 car running with the 2 car they're battling that's a real battle [Music] well Andre I understand that but if you're looking for who's that 75 depressing he's putting away would you put the old Marx in there for me that's right the new ones no I mean put the new ones in just so they're in one place at one time if I was at home I'd be watching this on the satellite hearing all that we're saying they're friends like my buddy Ken Isaac and all them are sitting up there hearing our during commercial coming us they hear are coming and running does it have satellite is line up - yeah I'll do they yeah oh yeah yeah I'll they can hit on the stuff oh yeah all this stuff yeah as it goes back up they can't see your lips move nothing so hello out there all you folks missing about satellite you're breaking the empathy so you roll on tell you what let's kiddo [Music] [Music] 140 laps to be completed this time by Bill Elliott just 60 to go records every lap retards out here the marks are at 50 100 150 as their temples Daytona Speedway we've already seen the 50 and 100 broken and live remarkable numbers in the 150 lap mark 1980 was a one-for-one for that one stands very much in doubt right now looks like he's going to crack to that Bolivia has slowed down he's very kindly lifted off the plate he's only going about 192 but he seems to be pulling away from Blake speed in second month who's dicing furiously was Darrell Waltrip who is at least one lap down he's pulling away from Lake speed even his new reduced queen of the balance angle just about a second on that be done is a no draft helping like speed is trying to get more speed out of Darryl Waltrip and held him off every ceilings million dollars dollar Walter just in common Lake speed first came here 1980s Ike you didn't even one consolation won the race 1981 that came on at grandpa Daytona 500 senses always finished well back his car understanding I would like joy right now push mocks nobody's cars came down here and get seventy thousand dollars a race from their sponsor to run until last night you didn't even have a sponsor in urine second place well a lot of those high money teams are in the garage isn't that kind of ironic yeah it is but you know we've raised for five years now and I think we got a good driver lake speed he's doing us one heck of a job today and we signed the deal last night with nationwide auto part and I can't think of a better way to welcome in the grand master race into keeping the car front all day he's got a sponsor here who's never been to a grand national stock car race and they're in second place let's go to Chris there's a three-way battle in progress for fourth place three cars are fighting one another the scoreboard shows Drake back in part of a 51 at sport Ricky whoops car 15 exists this guy walked up in front of 11 is 6 I'm with Linda Rudd Ricky flame how's he doing in that battle with stripe sac Greg the best looks like he's going to come into the pitch here and then the best way plan suffice well just turn the camp around here and watch it with your top coming up Otto Hahn suspected back in here why do you will for the stop just going to play an important part in that battle the full report Greg sacks right side tires gasoline of course it looks so Meredith Morris was not expected what clothes is bringing out and away you know that's what it's all about in stock car racing game ready for anything that pops up back to you Ken running in fifth when he pitted God number 15 ricky rudd victim of a horrible crash sure a year ago then came back in the very next race Richmond Virginia and wanted there's a Joe running got CDs epic back on the mid line there looks like a schedules felt they seem to be ready for it yeah I think these are soft while Ricky Rudd was named dick Brooks bought the petty enterprises car in Orem gets topped with the Elliott coming in before too long car number fours at a tire roll out across the track Rutman who's been running in the 15th position overall on the field so I think I run across the main straightaway no right that is still running along stronger than the front with about a 30 second lead he's got over a half a lap now well over half leg speed good to see it drive a night leg speed gets monster bass you can knock me on NASCAR's door for about 4 or 5 years now he's an ex karting champion obviously a very accomplished driver and it's like being a really good run for leader still Elliott Bill Elliott Dawsonville Georgia looks like he's going to break the stranglehold it has been hell on this racetrack by the great racing stars of NASCAR for the last 2 or 3 generations and there is the second room race car that is Neil Bonnett Neil Bonnett running in third place and he may be getting ready to come in here we expect you to come in before too long and he isn't going to stay out there and take a chance of running out of gas one thing that will head or can happen in that many time ok let's first go to Mike coy he's in the LTC until Elliot comes to a stop one of the headlight doors that come off that car gets little extra air inside slows aerodynamics right side tires two cans of gasoline 11 gallons each and they tape up that headlight hold and ask our inspectors make them cover that up they don't want anybody getting any added advantage perhaps there's a little bit of cooling mechanism back there they want to get some air too it's still up in the air tire change just about now Stephens ready to dock drop the jack but it's still up there at Ernie Elliot takes over that headlight they won't let him leave until it's done no one more piece to take the inspector says he's got it affixed oh come on this is agony here Ernie's arguing with the inspector over the amount of covering they're going to need well they found one way to blow Indianapolis i holed up in the pits while they take a little more tape on the right front corner you get that one now that was a very long pit stop while we made that extra repair on the front should you know between running away do you think that that fender was getting that loose around that head like well of course it could create some hazard for other drivers if that sheet metal starts coming apart and then it could fall off on the track and these tires are very easy to cut here's the lady who is now taking over to be even car number 75 but it was a safety precaution for San mor officials were concerned but a very devastating one as far as bill le was concerned again about the music when you sitting into the pit don't want to run out of gas if these automobiles because that will aren't a piston in many cases so you know right down to low dismissed the way he was running here today you don't think they're trying to tighten up the few never know but once exactly two sons they took part Dylan took 41 seconds of it [Music] get to my joy for more on that pit stop Larry Elliott is back behind the pit wall pacing he doesn't want to talk to us and he used up about half a roll of tape getting that right front corner secure drew as you saw when the car came in the headlight door had come loose but specters made sure they would have been awful lot of time because that really solidly taped up before they let Bill Elliott back on the racetrack caught over 75 is now on pit road Lake speed he was the leader of course before he came in so that put Neil Bonnett back in the lead in carnival 12 and 10 during all of this Darrell Waltrip has now got back in the lead lamp remember we saw him running running front plate read your speed was just drafting Waltrip around there and so now that puts welcome back as we met what do you have kids stopped doing up for long so that Elliott stop change the complexion adds another car to the machines now running in the lead lap this will be at least a good stop for Lake speed also because he's taking on four tires Neil bunny changed four tires last time around here he is now as he comes off the turn four he's in the lead and he'll be just him before it to only [Music] 147 laps are complete 53 remaining and that Lake speed goes back at you money put a lap on him boy he didn't have to coach inherit really good human good seed but we have an egg many caution today Lake speed Thomas and that's his real name everybody says that is real name for sure is that Christian will have the right number 12 yield on it very much in this race whole question stays of the number nine with the technology so much the same on these cars Elliott in number 9 comes up with a couple of brothers and a dad who is sincere interest in racing any out engineers everyone I think that's the incredible story here today oh there's no question about it and I'll tell you there's God of the name of route Luna that was so prominent in this court for so many years ago he was a sort of a right arm engineering guy for Ford when they were embracing the heads of oil factory team and his philosophy logs always keep the race car as simple as possible keep it as stock as you possibly can make the wheel track and not offset and do a lot of things at other prodigies and you'll get the most out of it Zen philosophy that Elliott's proud of you boy and Hayes awful as matters stand neil bonnett for the moment has relieved praise sacks finds himself at second and bill Ali and is looking up crew under in third place for the first time today bond stopped as he stopped yet no he sent one we'll follow them he goes no now he'd never do wouldn't go to the end with first now I said Bonnie put a lap on the own speed he hasn't got a lap on the nine he isn't it laughs one nine is he no sir stop its bonnet Elliott isn't it sacks well my facts are going to lap down he was had gone a lap down but he shared his own left himself let us figure man but he came back a lot when an officer was watching come through [Music] okay here's bonnet that no that's Walter it's not out okay here's Ron that's that's bonnet right there that says let the line he's a lap down and Elliott is a lap down to bonnet right no I don't think I don't think lead lap 1251 9/11 at 150 we've just gone by the mark 1251 9 and 11 I think you 51 on pit road I think nines in second place he is now Bay you'll be and he'll be in second place he comes to line yeah he just came to the run okay these twenty seconds behind Neal Bombonera I need a second spot noisy in the lead left yes okay yeah so it's 12 911 and we can I can explain why what about 75 he's the left down to leader how do you get a let down Oh in long stop it's now 12 911 folks 75 I think yep 75 is next [Music] for the moment kneel bottom in car never fall leaves they qualify from this moment tops [Music] Elly is in second place in the same lap in the interval med 20 seconds but Neil buns needs to be happening incredibly good building something he has been running a little longer today than most of the other cars he'll be coming in before Geelong now can't even though Elliot made a 47 second pit stop more than 30 seconds before Amina and wall ship stays third Waltons in third place in the lead lap mahiti who has a pit stop coming up he and Bonnie both will be coming in to pitch before July Krista cotta Mackey is standing by with mrs. Walton I'm down here at walkins pit BV you've got a second he was 23rd early now he's third what's making the difference Elliott fitted we have it you know big news for the wall ships this week the doctor said that stevie is going to become a mother are you happy about the new developments in the family seven parents in October you know that means you won't be sitting in this chair next season [Music] clerical working keeping tabs on when will you be able to do this work next year else's okay good luck Stevie Walter but her husband coming on late stages of this year's Daytona 500 Geoff Bodine on pit road running currently in 9th position dueling car number five Denari my car five tires on that car can wall-e fill it up with gas same as the old body continues to circle the traffic like Donna I just can't believe that building some she's getting a lot compared to coming in this left David he has been running about four or five laps father each time and so as that goes on you know that builds up he's coming into the pit right now and the techs place car Rusty Wallace has just pitted as well Wallace's come on pit road now you're watching Neil Bonnett in number 12 trying to win is real a tone of 500 come to a halt hitting right in front of car number 95 that Sterling Marlin who has run a very good race here today in car number 95 and Elliott retakes the lead Phil Elliott flashes across the line so he'll be back in first place good pit stop on deal bottom whatever work they did on Neil Bonnett car line holder has kept him right up in it away the performance of the Elliott family of Georgia take on it where he had about a 20 second lead he's perhaps going to be at least that far behind a Bill Elliott now but that be up down a wall ships coming in out of the third place Tommy looking up there everybody breaks Allah we're trying to get that one quote Latin spotting the rear tire that's finished second back in 79 for darrell waltrip here in the 500 the two-time Grand National Champion and a little different strategy on that team can they're changing the left-side tires as opposed to the right side that we call Jane doughnut and put the last gift I'll walk a bit take on rocks outside now the white-haired gentleman there in the red sweater won this race back in 1960 25 years ago Junior Johnson those cars are very much in this race but they're having to chase this man Bill Elliott in car number 9 [Music] here's one for you at the 150 lap mark 375 miles the old record for this race was set by Bobby Allison in 1980 at 170 new record is 182 point two six good for Sunday after Drive and it looks like he's got about a 26 second scene on Neal Bannen second-youngest drive at the field Bobby Hillin out of Midland Texas getting a draft here as he comes back to the line Bobby Hillin stayed in it and runs now in seventh position it's very good run for him it has to be a thrill for him running behind a veteran like Darrell Walker and being able to run up with him but he has a crew chief Almir car Ken Jake elder who has made his rounds in this fort but he's had a great influence on a lot of drivers including the one runner right in front of Bobby hill and Darrell Waltrip and that's a big help to call me Hilda cause he's only 120 years old very very young came here last year didn't make the field but looking pretty good this year Bobby Hillin was asked if he thought by racing at age 20 if he was missing something instead of doing what other people that age do I I feel like I'm in with a tough tough bunch of guys and I feel like it's a good opportunity for me to learn because all these guys that are in their 40s and late forties they know so much and if I can just go out there and learn what they've got to teach me out there when I get into my late 20s and early 30s I can I can really use that and hopefully be a tough race car driver Bobby Hillin and currently the update is that he has pulled himself up into the seventh position over all of the field Bobby Hillin and carniverous number nine still out in front the question perhaps his fuel consumption here the Elliots may know something others done let's go to Chris Takata Becky well down here Darrell Waltrip it he stopped with 46 laps of 44 laps to go the car can only get 40 laps out of one thanks roll that's four laps short of going to the end it's going to be a tough break dropping those closing laps and get that splash of death 100 file some however get one or two laps more but not number 11 thank you all right Chris here is number nine Eliot coming around with 100 miles to go and he crosses the line this time there's the second-place car Neal pot is Chevrolet trailing at Ford and there should be number 75 running third Lake speed who has never finished this race every time he's Tommy's at mechanical failure accident at 82 an engine failure in 83 which walked out last year i right now he's in there looking for a good finish maintaining third and here in the cross the product of Morgan Shepherd in the fifth with the hood up on the home across the product in the field he's robbed the car that the fans have been accustomed seeing buddy for so many years bearings and now just wants to be a car on old petty car that one is Morgan is really having trouble adjusting to that car a lot of pushin is for the way he's used to driving at the gorgeous Chevy she says he's really impressed to the engine on it caution is coming out caution is coming out car up in our number four just freshman a lot of the track try to bring himself in hate Marcus now I wonder if it was a ruse to get Neil Bonnett to put some gas in now because with 39 laps to go he can probably just make it to the end and I don't think that he'll let it can do that though depending on how many caution laps we would run here David at first they don't use nearly as much fuel you're in a caution lap as they do heard apparently the car number 71 ran out of gas we saw him slow down on the backstretch a little bit ago and they've Marcus apparently tried to stretch it a little too far David gotten himself up in the top ten was running a good race here today even other the top independent he's still running I can't believe they brought the caution out for him it must be something else on the racetrack or else they are trying to bunch up the field Dave Marcus one of the hardened veterans of Grand National racing you saw him begin to have trouble on the back straightaway there's Terry the body's car back in another time well it's behind the wall now I think that College they've really got pedal assist on puts it behind the wall again Dave Marcus his best finish here they tone a pair of six place efforts in 75 back when he drove for hairy high-def quad Inez aymee this year and 78 for the officer Luke team and all the leaders are on pit road number nine is in Elliott coming in here's Waltrip making his way on to pit road Richard Brooks are the number one who's running in seventh place here's my joy Neil Bonnett brings his car it has to thread the needle between two pits almost hit the piece of Sterling Marlin and again the hood right-side tires on the car the distance on fuels inside a wife of the windshield and right tires the bottom will be back on let's go down a crib damodara wall chips now this will be the last stop for this car yellow flag 97 and a half miles remain to change the outside tires they're rolling the inside tires in okay down to my skill bike joy will be a four-tire change for Neil Bonnett taking advantage of the caution flag to make sure that it's up for fresh speakers the fastest potential combination of tires they can put on the car for fresh ones to run the difference Eliott out already and they all could make it all premiere yeah I think the cam as David said earlier they'd be very close as far as Elliott is concerned but if they run a couple or three laps here under caution David not burning my school I think can go the rest of the way I wouldn't think they would have money nights under the course we did Dave Marcus's car has been pushed in by a truck second caution of the day let's go to Chris economy you talk about luck when that yellow flag came out Darrell Waltrip had a flat tire had it not been yellow he would have had to stop a changes under green and it certainly would have cost him a shot at Victory so he got the bad breaks at the top of the race and the lucky breaks in the closing last back to you Ken so we're getting ready to resume the 1985 Daytona 500 with less than 100 miles to go standby for the finish line [Music] [Music] now Waltrip had gone a lap down again after that after his green flag pit stuff yep only have three cars in the lead so we should have 51 1511 running together and have a race back there for fourth place right now and Bobby Bobby when you come back you should have a race between 50 150 no 1151 15 11 and one maybe in a - I mean I'm it maybe he's the next one in line and they're running pretty well with that Maurice petty car you have three cars in the lead lap which would be 912 75 and then a lap down and and 11 has gone a lap down after that green flag stop be 51 15 11 one heyday is whatever that ours what numbers adds at 88 yeah Baker and 88 Baker's in that green Jeff Burton is Baker that's a lap down not a lap down anymore okay playmat that's being the Bodine thing is being a race that that is not a lap markets they're all in this always yeah okay careful I'm so you got 51 in yes yes they coming up to the flag now you [Music] at lap 160 for the green flag has just been unfurled another time over Bill Elliott leading the 1985 Daytona 500 youngest driver to feel Bobby Hillin carburetor on pit road having problems back for the leaders the second-place car now is Neil Bonnett third is lately when he made that green flag pit stop that played the lap back and Ken this is the first time today that Neil Bonnett has seen Bill Elliott as far as being close to him he's been running back in the back all day long let's see if he can run with him in the draft there you see Elliott first Neil Bonnett right with it they both have gone back to qualify the ones that usually run just about 10 miles and say good night here they are they've rebuilt them a motor that went 205 plus miles an hour and qualified the number 12 car the motor that ran well over 200 miles an hour [Music] here they are - back quit away and thought it wants to take a shot at first place well he does I don't know if he attempts to get out for a later movie he's got him from his teammate Sarah Walker's blue violin first time since cale yarborough phantom early in races men pastor Walter picks up his lap while Hidalgo delicate and no two leaders right now so that Phil he's left out behind - uh right here comes Elliot rock back around we're going to have some fun here do you think that sip on it will let his teammate make up the lap out here no stop we have to get by the cloud Walter little bit of assistance now undoubtedly 167 complete the oddity is the allure to win this race Neal Bannen very lucky were the only two guys a really big bike on Thursdays 125 mile coil binding thought it was funny and always been to do downpours in this race because nobody [Music] back to the line they probably complete the 167th of 200 laps Wow Neil Bonnett there Bill Elliott in the second position well I don't know I would assume Neil Bonnett here to try and save his fuel because he is a little bit more hard fulfill the deal but because you can always take the scene of the last time using done twice for Lake speed number 75 look at the blow well the five is in third Lake speed is running in third in the lead left your Johnson boys except collected as ever you see Ricky right mixing it up is a good battle for among five six automobiles in font of trying to take that drug cause the sake trying to shake him on the job 169 laps complete this time by your friend [Music] go camp down here with you and your Johnson doing it looks like your voices try to double-team Bill Elliott there I don't like they go to do but so then it would seem like when he gets ready to go Glenn's car ham a food cart early this goes the offense could read with him when he's got two old tires well but where's the stairs gets hot he seems to get away from wall ships come alive for the last hundred miles what's happened there well it start where the judge was awesome like I said when we finally got it Destiny's a very good shakedown but he got a lap down away from get it desk okay there's a tiara fire number 11 and 12 everybody all different nail products Rick your rod is now for the white prison for 15 of us for they're the leaders bonnet number 12 Eliot number 9 one lap down running for Court there you see Ricky Rudd followed by Darrell Waltrip and Greg sacks very much in Walter Boni inside makes a move on ricky rudd going to turn three Greg sacks Nestle's right down in there twice to come through as well [Music] Junior Johnson cars been his third and Clea in his race Walter for third and Neil Bonnett but it feels like one leading prank and now Walter scooped into the corporation 30 laps to go bonnet still fertile valley at the inside sixty to seventy five or a mock guard to get our jet boat I'm still out here at five cents position now on jebediah number five and even the leaders are spattered is it begin to go away at this time duration doesn't windchill to really get into the fun begin on the pencils empathy your eyes things to attempted let me correct myself Neal - morning here I'm Daryl Walker 17 cars are reported out from the 40 that started 17 out Manan and Elliott squaring off they caught a ride I think the Manta watching this lead groove now with the clues to be great back he's really pushing hard and he's look very loose coming through for a couple of laps ago if you were younger another observation let's go to Mike joy Dale Inman Terry Labonte is out of the race what happened well we lost the clutches on the race track star when we brought in readjusted that and but it was it got hard before than that lie assaulter wouldn't go in here so we had to give it some more free travel days he finally just went away on his completely Neil Bonnett Bill Elliott Lake speed Greg sacks who is your pick to win this when you watch those to the perfect road [Music] well I think Elliot is still they are Paula playing on but I know neo-byzantine who knows he might he might have a van opieop i in the lies lab but bill been awful strong all day and I think of me between those two I left the crew chief that's been to Victory Lane more than anybody else car number watch seems to be slowing down car number one maybe bring it on a caution in turn number two that is the Parise Cuddy car Ford higher down for Richard Brooks now this is read out of ulsan to want to John's need to cross the line to get here they are racing back to the line out of turn number four I don't think he has a place to go the caution is out welcome can't past or find it so his they have one lap down you see the tire off amazing that thing just sitting there and I guess they came off the car number one it must be real sticky yeah I'll bet sticking to the turns is really done that soap on it stays first Elliott's a second third caution of the day 17 of 40 have retired from the Avengers Richard Brooks pulling out of pit row third caution of the afternoon - one wheel strategy here they'll come in again for four-tire change kill the rest of the way now that all goes out the window there be no question about that dick Brooks next thought on the one into the garage area knew that apparently too much damage was done to the suspension when it dropped down on the pavement or he's going to be out of it Richard Brooks first Grand National race he ever saw was the 1969 Daytona 500 and he watched it from behind the wheel of a Plymouth car finished 32nd that year his best finish 1973 you caught no ins dodge that's the last place for the cotton Owens Dodge let's go to Mike joy quickly Bill Elliott is on pit road it's crew chief Ernie was concerned they might not have to get enough gas to go the distance no more concern now they can easily run the route if they get a full tank of gas here under caution again it's right-side tires a cleaning of the grill in fact whoops even calls that jack around on the left side of the car and they'll take on four fresh tires down to Chris Takata Becky right now wall chip is taking on four new tires he got fresh tires about five minutes ago this is called in racing parlance rebuilding the car for the 25 to the finish all freshly whittled away goes down [Music] they rush back out of the track is who Elliot Hill thought it'd get out there Darrell Waltrip didn't wanna calming up his teammate as they leave the as they leave pit lane okay they just they raised every ounce of the way with a spit road or out on the race track 175 laps complete next time.bye and there will be 25 to go well this should make it a real tremendous NASCAR down to the wire but it's all about you rather they've all the top talk now we're out of gas this is going to be a tremendous minute and I'm sure that the fans all all the drivers come in not too long ago right click on new tires why would you come back in again this quickly well cool fresh tires will run faster when one driver goes damage changing those tires the others have to if they're going to expect to stay in the draft and have a shot in car number 51 Greg sacks did not come in he's back in the lead now we'll be back with more live flag-to-flag coverage of the 27th annual Daytona 500 after these words of your local station [Music] sex to infinity that won't do a thing for did he pass it on when they stop that now he didn't possibility he's not leaving the race he's back in the lead lap but that's not going to mean a thing in the world he's really what that won't - yeah he just barely back in the lead lap yeah and you know the fresh tires are going to blow him right back home oh yeah that's gonna be no advantage yeah yeah that's true it will have to happen almost in the first corner Yeah right I bet you bonnet don't pass that way at this time one more and then thank you this CBS sport special is sponsored by Budweiser for all you do this but for you I'm exports great looks that can take a licking stole bandage tobacco and a neat little pouch it's a little pouch of tobacco pleasure and by the u.s. meeting the Navy it's not just a job it's an adventure at the Daytona Speedway we're just about a lap away from resumption of the Daytona 500 the circumstances have changed a bit the question still is as we look at the view from the Goodyear blimp of this great facility can this Elliott car maintain this pace which is seeing records shattered all afternoon perhaps an answer here from Ernie Elliott Mike joy well fuel is no longer a factor Ernie you went on Father's Day on CBS you won a couple more times during the 1984 season what would it mean to the Elliott family to win the great American race here today wait a day Don there's nothing like it we never want it would be hard for us the statement after there's nothing like winning a hold on me I think that's basically every racers go with live it's the win at Daytona we're just gonna try to pull it out today how old were you and your first dreamed of bringing a car here and winning this race oh I don't know I used to come here with daddy in 64 65 so I was pretty small and so I guess then he would have had to sneak under the fence then to get to pit road in this today he may go to Victory Lane let's go to Chris that last pit stop long to the leader stopped and took on tired but Greg saxons over 51 is the head of the line up right now stayed out there the difference between having the old tires on the new tires on is only a difference for about four to six lap the cause of the new tires can go faster for only four to six laps and then they settle down to the same speed I'm told here by drivers at a new set of tires after the five laps old are no faster than types of 70 or 80 miles on them so what Greg sacks did was fail to get up front on the track the other drivers time any got tires so they could go a little bit faster for a short period of time back to you Ken and you saved about $600 into properly at the point it goes in the rule is about to be instituted well you can't change all four tires under the caution and of course it will help teams I guess like regs Acula salem's the money over the it comes in affected Richmond where they race next they go to Richmond Virginia a week from now back to the old roots of racing on a half mile cracker you had a church guys have had $2,000 of the tires in about the last a minute per car all right restart from inside Jeff bow times car the eighth place car black down two laps down actually they come back to the line plays fires coming in here foot I taking his shopping inside to see the orange car and wipe down the inside sneaky dunder he tries to squeeze off the cars into that first turn Bill Elliott is the overall leader deified as in secondly lead isn't bird they all rot in the lead lap a lap down in Cork is Greg sacks with Buddy Baker still out here shootin items in Ricky runners and six Waltrip and le max right away look at this performance with Bill Elliott crawling away [Music] interfere around he's going to get serious now no more mr. nice garden today Jill Elliot first came to they taught in 1978 and he became popular immediately underdog he could eight of the 500 the following year good-natured didn't even qualify survival our disappointing moments in his entire racing career but he certainly has things up I had come back has been it's no worse than twelve six five hundred sites and here writing records today and look all the way and was able to stay with him in the draft and then being panting moving around the time is here not the chips are down I'll go after no floor midnight but he is a nice guy he looks like he's still out to be delivering papers rather than racing cars in a butcher a humble but they could be playing company [Music] - laughs but over 205 miles per hour to put this car on the pole and it hasn't backed up yet I'll follow fire only two previous drivers fireball Robertson Taliaferro have won all three in speed weeks the pole position the qualifying race in the 500 this could be the third driver of the Goodyear blimp there's an indication of just how much power this number nine has as it draws away past the backstretch grandstand hits into turn number three 20 laps 50 miles to go this time live for Phil Elliott in what will be one of the most remarkable performances in the history of this race by any individual no question about it and we have to think back to the days of our moment when he was so dominant here in stadiums of private cars for smoking eunuch and rape often some of the great mechanics away and petty wasn't 64-61 on the way to the field but not seldom seen this year they tone it's always been nose-to-tail here's bill Elliot drawing away again and he seems to be able to handle the field anyway he wants believable the way the car has continued to drive well they're the parents all day long the track has gotten a lot slicker than when the green flag dropped earlier diamond in the low breeding the turn hasn't affected the Hamming colleges of that car and certainly nothing is affected two horsepower you know any other once you go through that there now absolutely steady as a rock just like it was on Thursday afternoon and he won't come the other guys going through they're having a lot of this fans are happy young man out front just a few years ago the Elliott brothers all three of them used to take some jumper tires that was of the carb in New York they used to run him around in a field out back Richard Petty the water president pretended he was Cale Yarborough and wondered pretending with Bobby Allison and they would go out in it now here they are leading the real almost big names have already fallen by the wayside Elliott's last lap [Music] I mean this is later the race on 100 98.6 hops that's getting the program is relaying back now maybe disturbing the machinery is obviously the cars had to make the field the whole week fourth place battle here at the Indy car of Ricky Rudd sandwiched right in here is the Carl akeleys isn't Windham he is third right in blue number 75 his third place overall 15 at his Ricky ride what a comeback he made lies - you're crashing so violently here at Daytona going on to win the next 500 and there's the 88 car what a story on Baker the sights to form his own team comes out here and Buddy Baker is still very much a part of the story running in fifth position he only was former Daytona 500 winner in the field even though he's a lap off the pace he has been a very good race but he got that left behind him when he overshot his pit early in the race took some extra time they got a lap down adjust it with everything able to make it up and he's run with the leaders ever slam now hanging on to nail Donohue who's a lap ahead of them but they are racist and that little move right there helping Lake Mead to move around [Music] be in a position to talent spot in your area you are watching what appears to be the fastest 500 race in history they can all stay together on this car number nine Bill Elliott there's the interval which is now up to [Music] Neil Bonnett on four seconds back in second place unofficially we have 18 cars imported it started out of the race building up to about half the field have gone back to the garage area early the incredible speeds that have been turned out as everyone has the course chase Rockford I sometimes the old factory day your AC Ned they send one car out as a rabbit tried it force the others into going down this is a one-man rapid performance out here today he's been the rabbit they're adults who has a family he has led 124 laps unbelievable in today's competition did we could not believe that one man could do that but he he's got the grin when he ran 205 years qualifying week ago yesterday not so much one man but one family from a small town in northern Georgia dominating the great American race Bill Elliott can he stay with it and win it [Music] yeah [Music] yeah I would think well it is only one for that's running this well there's only one it's this one yeah well I think one of the stories I'm sorry never use well certainly lake speed and Neil Bonnett they yeah lake speeds an incredible story and well we need maybe told under the crew chief to find out why his engine blew up today and cannon generator oh god it wasn't running an 11th place there right now with the Kenny Schrader the only rookie in the field is running in 11th place yeah and we need to talk to Bodine when he comes in I'm not sure about that we need to to address the situation strongly that the rules need to be changed or anything of that nature I mean they they need to yeah but he's the only Ford it's going so well let's seem to be getting somewhat better than the rest of the field [Music] yep [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] 188 of 200 laps complete is Bill Elliott flashes across the line leading the Daytona 500 after dominating they qualified on the pole last Saturday the Elliott brothers are pretty quiet particularly Ernie Ernie was standing around the press was all over the line said four years ago no one who talked to me brother Dan said four years ago we were running 205 let's go to Mike joy with it now Bernie le has just picked up a stopwatch and he's reading the interval to his brother did you pull the pin and turn it Luther and he's setting his own pace he's just pretty much running like he won't stay right now are you comfortable with that big a lead or would you rather he back off and accept a bit and save the car birth in his show well he's just doing whatever he feels likes necessary so you know we'll just have to wait and see solid girl Elliot hands now lisanna Becky I'm with Tim brewer Neil Bonnett spooky kilometer laps ago Tim and eight seconds is it hopeless well it's not hopeless Chris it's not over yet some can happen to hell yeah you know you know heaven forbid but you know yeah we're take it either way you know he's been off for gamla been coming down here for a lot of years he's definitely got the strongest I've ever seen here and if you have a thumbnail bottom screw keep living hope along the system they counted an ankle three right back to you again thanks Chris third spot is number 75 Lake speed he maintains the third position there you see him at the white of blue car and in the fourth position over now is the car just in front of him a lap down number 88 that is Buddy Baker than just behind who was great sax in the 51 car trying to hold on Ricky Rudd is back to six Waltrip is seventh quote 9 is 8 Bobby Dylan is aroun Rusty Wallace is in sets early part of 11 and the only rookie catch later is up to 12 Mike Alexander is running 13th on the field it's still nil Nelly biggest story of the day told a 504 1985 I think Jim brewer sent it there and that's the strongest car that he had ever seen here and I'll a car that dominant and they come but don't go away you know the final 10 laps here they've been strangely to Anna Baker lost to 500s in the final six laps were number one trouble going to turn number one number 48 many loopy Lenny ponds in Virginia taking over the car the Trevor boys drove a year ago is bringing out the caution flag and the strategy once again goes down the drain they'll all be coming back into the pit taking on tires again Andy run they will probably be these laps of course our County last just for three laps of the finish between three men Bill Elliott Neil Bonnett and Lake speed there's Lenny clock the Virginian to 100 mile range in Talladega at that time the fastest 500-mile race ever run at some 174 miles per hour and there it sits there completely stalled on the racetrack let me walk him to him if they went down towards turn one we keep on moving around in the car just waiting to get some help now with the tires flat on it as it comes out to frustrate those cars pass them on the outside and apparently pull the back end up and around then we see the tires blow on the car and amazingly unit stays down all for the wall he is really turning that steering wheel as you can see him David as he cranks a steering wheel and then brings it to a halt he did a very good job they did back into the water oh he was also lucky that when he got sideways and it lifted look who sits on the edge of lifting up but it didn't quite fly so Lenny find pretty lucky but very poisonous closely into the race and as you say all the strategies are going to change down all these tires when they put these new tires on you just won a sixteenth of an inch I hate doing it wrong stagger Eliot on control surprise me I'm coming on to pit road and back joy is there well the Elliott crew had a look at Neil Bonnett go by staying on the racetrack guilty it'll have to come up from the back of the line be a routine stop there under caution they're in no hurry and early Elliot's checking with folks back behind the pit wall as they put right-side tires on bill Elliott's car and now come around to attend to the left side tire has a cup of water and he's tossed that out the right side window he looks very calm and collected if it's behind the wheel that 200 horsepower machine and knows that it will be just a couple laps shootout into the side appliances mile race on the elephant I think result of a dummy de mailbox headed towards admit that rider last minute he pulled out what is gambling on David is that you the retro breakdown out there and just take a long time to get that confluence knows there were four fresh tires that built Elliott will be able to come up with passing but maybe something will happen he'll take a while to get that car off the track that's how Pearson lost to Hamilton 70 in 1970 remember they're only too tired of change all right here they are I say we're coming down pit road the seat body was right behind him and then he pulls out and decides not to do it now whether that was his own decision or whether the team manager Tim brewer said hey stay out there stay out there and anyway he hits at 192 laps are now complete they've on it and the 12 will be deployed up in front right ladies put a couple bulletins that wasn't given up done yet no indeed the wrecker of course is not breaking down it's got that car for the time we didn't really expect it to digitally well that think back buddy baker lost him to 500 final six laps both in 73 and 78 when the engine came apart he had the race won and your old pal LBJ little bobby jon's came out here when having he spun Khalid was 60 with just a few laps to go in this race he gave two new Johnsonville win that year and then back in 1979 we first came onto here Richard Petty want the race have a little incident up and turn number three between Donnie Allison T Cale Yarborough's out of famous baseball mentor once said it ain't over till it's over now well they get the signal for one more lap to go so they're going to have about six laps here to hammer it out the checkered flag drops is the only time you know you'd wonder right that's right let's also point out the fact that mission we'll see if that will give him an advantage over car number seven over the car number 12 I think the record may have gone away with this caution period the record fourth caution of the day may have slipped away from us before you have a broken here's Mike joy with Ernie Elliott Ernie would you have stopped whether or not Neil Bonnett came on to pit road yeah we were stopping either way either white so obviously wasn't on a fade the Elliots were poised to stop and take on those four fresh tires I think it was a precautionary measure again that they stayed out there and the fact is that meant car lives to a brand those are left cars down on the inside that we see and so we see the first three plays cars that are right in a line there so it's not like the champ to go back completely to the rear end of the field and you see the fourth place Carney inside number 51 great sex a lap down and directly behind him should come the man that he is trying to counter-attack from Buddy Baker along with Darrell Waltrip morning at 6:30 rod in seventh in those positions early Marlin he's brought a beautiful race here today but looks like he's going to be out of it in the car number 95 half the field is retired more than half that's the 21st car out sterling monitor he's asleeping pushed away they're qualified at extremely high speed 198 car out very good well here's a team that started literally in a schoolhouse this number nine Bill Elliott team a Baden old schoolhouse and used to build the the engines in the first grade and he used to build the chassis one had been either the second grade or the third or something over there classical Georgia I understand they're in new digs these days but I've got high grades today they certainly have here they are under a green flag and trying to get all A's as we can battle a finish and go dine makes a dive on the inside he's still trying to get nearly gets tangled up on number 75 light speed that's Jeff wood on going up to give us a view on those front automobiles as we decide the 1985 Daytona 500 off they go squaring off with these final moments to decide it all on it gets the jump here you see Elliott [Music] what I do in the end in his birthplace long and the whole way along the river way let's go to Chris economic is the white bonnet did not pit we asked Jim Breuer why didn't you stop this is right here we owe a lot is going to problem in the front ugly spinning Neil Roddick out of control almost alone this is the first wall still trying to collect it back right to be Nagas Osment the front tires down to smoke violently if he came into trouble his wife Susan there you can see the disgust on her face after him running such a beautiful race all day and now to see him slide out there she doesn't really know what kind of condition he's in we saw that he's okay but she said to know that at home here's Bonnie crawling out of the car what a discipline here they are racing back to the line they are coming back to the line number nine Bill Elliott will be in front will be 196 laps complete Elian across the stripe from four laps remain [Music] they can't be run under caution the track looks like it may be clear apparently leaves make hearts on his car because he would have just didn't hit anything if he went out through there I don't know how he missed those balls but he he would have cranked it up and tried to come around if the engine would not have blown up let's take a look at replay since the last moments of the hopes of Neil Bonnett to somehow pull out the great American race running behind Elliott MV in second position and we see the smoke come from the car yes the engine does know the wheels the rear wheel gets in its own oil and water it turns cross blades through the grass back onto the page there at the end of the pit road then down almost clipping that wall and look like he was going into it maybe got a night replay from his side a car drove directly behind it that Jeff Oh doc [Music] okay here's the way the gym food on site has to come through the tri-oval here and hid out towards third one and you see all of that smoke now mo dine yummy he didn't even know where he was going he couldn't see very well but they did get to the outside of the track and Bonnie's car spun to the inside of the cross hill and a third replay coming to the trial there you can see the engine let loose the shy the start/finish line large starts to turn sideways and the hopes of Neil Bonnett or a strong finish here slide into the interview here's Neil Bonnett making truly the longest lockets courts still waving still a great showman Jeff bowtie 10 Squire at CBS controlled ureas yeah go ahead Ken what kind of a day has it been for you we thought you're going to be stopped from the very beginning fell back early well we've many busted racket all day we've had trouble colonel week Parkinson and a ratchet is broken or rear-ended we just can't seem to get the car dial then to go where we want to do it we just avoided deal bonnet accident so we feel pretty lucky today to get this Levi here max I bought a Royal beneficial money car through all edges we're going to just go home and take this as a footage and we can finish these last few laps and try to get this thing ready next time we come back here to Daytona but the track is awful Thomas novel hard and you've seen all these cars drop out today and to show you our topic track it is so if you can just finish here at Daytona I guess you got count your blessings and I just come back next time and try a little harder thank you very much Jeff we'll be back for the finish of the 1985 Daytona 500 in just a few moments Neil Bonnett a spy standard for this race one lap when he come back three laps under green man force on the accident another one when they come back there will be one yeah one lap one they'll get to fly down yeah we coming up on green and white lakes but he could still win this good what one Arbonne it over after his engine on that tie caught on the tape but yet another big team letting this engine yeah little old guys from Dawsonville nice job man oh thank you it's been fun up in Georgia [Music] light and green will be shown to the field one lap and it will be over card for nine Bill Elliott has brought number 75 Lakes speed as the lead lap let's go to Chris economy nail that's the longest of all walks isn't it I'll tell you going through us you know I should be disheartened but it's a good sign for what's coming this season my guys give me a good race car today and what did you feel when it went well when it playing with his probably sick as I've ever felt in my life I just you know it was over and I honestly thought we had a good shot there but a build run except I'm just tickled ed where the car wrecked it thank you back to you Ken Squier the last one [Music] way more shot at Bill Elliott no one's been able to contain Elliott all afternoon and one thing that lets the Disney when he needed every we thought they wanted to help first place no contest imminent only in battles be for third Lake speed is in second that will be welcomed position like in the second position Bill Elliott is on his way to his greatest race on a little looseness up at turn number three couple cars on the way sideways here they are coming back to the line and after dominating all day his crew miss Elliot 1985 there you see Arnie Elliott they're just the left water moment flakes beat up to congratulate the winner the Daytona 500 David Hobbs what a great result the lakes painted Hoffa second behind wonderful race for Lake speed born-again Christian churches he does it is bracing he comes out here and has the best day he's ever had Buddy Baker coming to a halt and as they race across the line unofficially now in third spot we have Waltrip and Baker for fourth and run for fifth Bill Elliott literally ate a and then for a ton of 137 laps for the margin of ingre was only a half a second that doesn't seem like much compared to where he ran if he had a really lucky day he could have run this right by this team worked 16 hours a day they work from November on they took on they said they literally took time to sleep took time to either to go to church on Sunday and some of them even worked on Christmas Day they split the shift up so they could be with their families to get that car here and to make it perform and there you see Ernie Elliott the man that put the engines together and one of the brothers let's take a look at the replay right now Ned of how they came across the line or perhaps would get a Mike Joyce there with Ernie Elliott okay here's the cars as it came across the start/finish line of course there's a lien way out front sample second playoff route and there's Lake speed for second and there's third going to Waltrip and Baker for fourth Darrell Wilson had a pretty good day end reading off the very bad stuff that's your life let's go to Mike joy Ernie Elliott you folks have dominated every car here all week long could you be any happier than you are right now no not really you know everything just went well I I just have thank you good Lord for such a good day I mean such a good week I mean everything's went just you know above your highest expectation and you know I just I created out of a crew but they work so hard coming out here we will displace go by everybody you got a look at that million dollars at r.j. Reynolds this is the first leg might central sponsor cool car owner how's Harry Melling in life all of our family and friends are supporting this a man stood by us all the way we'll let you get down to Victory Lane and we'll go down there to Krista Connor Maggie okay Bill Elliott has probably more crowded now that he's been on the track all day long poor hands and hats and health helping a macaque congratulations he's probably wondering if it's worth it alright now he looks very tired he sent me a trying to catch his breath don't unfastening in genre know what I think is Linnaeus face a little bit before he steps out it's the biggest win of his long career and he certainly did dominate but the big question is going to be for the next few months is whether Bill Elliott won this racial whether his car won the race the car has been an outstanding piece of machinery and it's agreed up and down pit road that no car has ever done as well against the competition this particular machine is done here he is stepping out of the car hey we talked gigas before you got in the car now we're talking just get out hopped up was it bill well I'll tell you what the car ran so good all day long and krn a heck of a race I know I felt like he was going to be the another car to beat you know we could started all fire and he took off and I let him set the pace and you know I run along air and those times I was running as hard as I could run and he was leading right so he would have been a tough guy to beat at the end of the day I was worried about him all day long I see the right front headlight Jerry they're all taped up what happened there I don't something happened to and they made us type it up on one of the green bike sighs well I'm sure the questions going to be asked you later honors who won this race today Bill Elliott or LaForge -
