NBC Sports studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York it is an afternoon of baseball here on NBC and we'll have a conversation with Neil Alan the relief pitcher for the New York Mets is currently wide-open in recent years and down in Houston the Tournament Players Association stopped for the Houston Open and Lee Trevino has taken some time away from our NBC broadcast booth to go back out on the course and he has a two-shot lead going into today third round Phil last week when John McEnroe beat Czechoslovakia Zevon Lendl in the WCT finals in Dallas Texas Lendl took exception to McEnroe's fiery demeanor on the core now Lendl expected to get revenge this week at the Tournament of Champions but Yvonne was beaten early in the tournament McEnroe instead vented his wrath on another check Tomas Schmid and big back one yesterday 6-3 7-5 but also was fined $1,000 for shouting obscenities and calling Schmidt a communist John will have to control his temper this afternoon because he's going against Vitas Gerulaitis in the semi finals last Saturday night in El Paso Texas the Diablos beat the Beaumont Gators 35 21 just another football game long it was a minor league baseball contest in the Texas League the outrageous run production courtesy of the friendly West Texas wins El Paso and Beaumont combined to score 56 runs register 53 RBI and they used up six and a half dozen baseball's amazing you know funny thing happened on the way to the ballpark to California's Doug to since they last week it seemed that his uniform was stolen and he had to resort to wearing the batboy Jersey Doug responded by hitting two home runs against his old teammates the Baltimore Orioles and athletes being the superstitious lot that they are expect the batboy to be out one new uniform if I was essentially I wouldn't give that up at all you know while Beaumont and El Paso were busy why the scoreboard last week in the major leagues umpires would like to short-circuit a few of this scoreboard around the league of all things this week diamond vision was to show videotape replays on stadium scoreboards was the center of controversy Richie Phillips head of the Major League umpires Association warned if teams continue to show controversial plays they will risk forfeiting games meanwhile injuries to star pitchers grab the headlines as Baltimore's Jim Palmer three times saw Young award-winner was placed on the 21 day disabled list the back problem and Nolan Ryan the major leagues new career strikeout King struck out 12 Mets on Monday but this pitch to wally backman he pulled the hamstring muscle his left leg Ryan will miss at least the next three weeks the season meanwhile Philadelphia's Mike Schmidt continues to pound rawhide here against the Cincinnati Reds Schmidt nails home run number seven for the season so go along with 23 RBI and a hefty 356 average on Wednesday night Johnny Bench reached another milestone in his great career by getting hit number 2,000 off of seed Carlton and becoming only the second since in any player to achieve that feat and there the greet him at first base and old teammate Tony Perez over in Anaheim California Rod Carew is off to another sensational start he is waving his magic wand at a phenomenal clip against American league pitchers he's batting 548 496 and for his career Rod Carew well he has hit at least 300 in 14 these is $7.99 the Fiesta swells personal cooler is foam insulated and durable the wide mouth half gallon job has an easy force balance raised by combos of 944 when Jim mountain road ball four back in 1970 it stirred up quite a controversy now Bowden's wife Bobby has written a book of her own along with Nancy Marshall wife of Mike Marshall former relief star and it too has caused some sparks to fly Jim mountain and like Marshall to headliners when they played fountain piss to the world series Marshall of sy Young winner and off the field fountain the controversial offer of ball for Marshall a nonconformist and now their former wives have taken over center stage Bobby Bowden and Nancy Marshall have co-authored home games they paint the picture of being a baseball wife which is anything but glamorous an awful rough life the glamour part that is so few and far between married is high risk matter what your husband is feeling and you have the added pressures of this profession I think it's difficult by the time we actually were out of fallin for our separation we moved over 60 times well jebra unpack there were a couple of times I really thought about not doing it because we moved I think it was five times in two months in 1970 but certainly Dodger Stadium is a whole lot better than sitting in rebel Stadium in Chattanooga Tennessee we wound up in 2 rango Mexico in 1977 when Jim was playing double-a ball in the Mexican League and in Durango we didn't have a telephone we didn't have a car and there are no laundromat so I wound up doing a family laundry and Jim Faithful laundry in the kitchen sink with a scrub board that's glamorous we talked to Jim Bowden he does not disagree with everything his former wife wrote it is difficult in the minor leagues it's difficult for the player who will ride the buses and it's difficult for the wives who stay at home and wait for the bus to come back it's not an easy life that's your baseball players bad guys I like Mike when I married him and I like him now but there's an ego that goes along with it that just won't quit it's tough living with someone that has to be people even though they need it you need it have a good echo if you're going to be on the mound and you're going to be facing TIROS you've got to know you're going to get them out you speak a little black addressed books of the other women on the road is that a fair picture of all baseball players I think it's more fair than it's unfair I don't know what the percentage is but certainly I'm talking to ballplayers who have been candid with me that's part of the game I think it really is playful higher risk than other professions the hard on a marriage is and other professions so we were talking to one baseball white pool was on the Minnesota Twins team and she said out of the 25 players on the 65 champion 1513 of the market park if the marriage doesn't work it's the responsibility of the two people in the marriage that's it and they need to work that out themselves and if they can't and if the marriage doesn't make it and there's their responsibility equally and anybody who tries to blame an industry or blame other women or blame travel or blame something else is simply looking to avoid the responsibility why people will need somebody Jim met another woman in fell in love with her that happens to everybody whether a school teacher a doctor if you play baseball but the nonchalant that goes on with the women in baseball bothers me you know they laugh at these women and I guess I question whether they can treat women as jokes and locks on the road and then come back home and treat their wife as a violation are there any baseball players who are faithful husband's I'd be willing to bet any money Tommy John I'd bet my life on it one player well don't closer I'm standing next to two of the wives of the Detroit Tigers Wanda Wilcox and Angie leach what effect that book have on you well I think it made me appreciate my husband a lot more just made me think about the effect of a sloth had on both of our lives but just made me realize how lucky I am that I have a good solid marriage it reminded me of things that I had been through it didn't make a great impact on me it didn't change the way I felt about the game or my husband and I found an entertaining reading but again no big change what about the wheel and Nancy Marshall talks about well you know I got in pro baseball in 1968 and I gave up a modeling career at that time and I decided that Milt needed me more than I needed me so I devoted myself and my time to him and his career I knew that my time would come again when I would have the opportunity to do what I wanted to do I think what Nancy was trying to say and what she realized later on in her marriage too late unfortunately that it's important that you have your own self-identity and you not make your husband and his career the most important thing in your life and I think that in our case I've made sure I've gone to college and I'm teaching now and I have a lot of interest other than racing baseball she used a line in the piece talking about and I have to get a quick answer about ego that they used nonchalance and jokes on the road and then come home and not make the wife a viable person you agree with that and not really no I think that the guys have to really concentrate on the game I don't think they're worrying about whether or not they're making their wife a viable person and I think the wife has to be a strong independent person to begin with the stay in this game and survive it's really it's really a rough life but you just have to be strong you too are strong and we thank you Wanda Wilcox Angie leach and now let's go back to 30 rock coming up we'll be talking to the math troubled relief pitcher Neil Allen can he regain the form that made him one of the National League's best relief hurlers right after this do you think it's easy being a bullfighter no sir you must have a great courage and tremendous skill and you have to move fascinated that's why when I am here in America I think like be familiar like they fantastic and it's less feeling that's important because in my profession you always have to stay one step ahead of the board Oh make that two steps like beer from Miller everything you always wanted in a beer and [Applause] in the world of driving there is a name that is legend the name is Dunlop and the legend lives on the wheels of the world's finest automobiles a legend proclaimed on racetracks and highways around the globe because the driver who knows tires demands the legend Dunlop the legend lives on NBC sports world the good ol boys of NASCAR try to flag down victory in over 200 miles an hour in Alabama Talladega 500 plus from Japan gentle giants hear their ancient tradition of combat only on NBC sports world last night the New York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds to break a five-game losing streak in extra innings 7 to 4 part of their problems recently has been in the release Department where Neil Allen has faltered he's here in our studios to talk about some of his problems let's pitcher Neil Allen spent the first part of this week making headlines and what you'd have to term very unusual circumstances it involved missing the Mets game last Sunday disclosing he had a drinking problem and finally doctors determining the deals problem was not as serious as he had thought but really stress-related Neil Allen's with us in our NBC Sports studios today here in New York and you know first of all what is the last couple of weeks been like for you and how your teammates react at all when I tell you it's been a it's been one of the hardest times in my entire life I know that as you when your little boy growing up you just wished it to you want everything to be peaches and cream your whole life Neil Allen has experienced a whole month of April that I don't wish on no one it's been hard it's been hard on my teammates because every time they pick up a paper a magazine I'm in there and it hasn't been good press it's been a hard times and a lot of it I have but on myself I've been struggling on the mound quite a bit and I think that my teammates realized I've been trying as hard as I possibly can but I think that I have a tendency to take more into my hands I can possibly do and that's what happened to me that's why I've resulted into right now I'm going to see a doctor on stress right now to make me relax my job a little bit more because I'm trying to put too much pressure on myself when this all started last Sunday and you spoke with Frank cash-in the general manager and that's about missing the game on Sunday and you indicated that your wife Linda it was an illness with her and that was why you couldn't be at the game why did you not tell the truth in that situation because I felt that Neil Allen in order to be professional you got to face things like professional it got to the point when April the last date last week last Saturday I was pitching against Atlanta had a rough time and I just was so completely mentally drained and frustrated that I told myself the next day I woke up I looked at my wife and and I just said you know honey I'm not going I can't make it I just cannot make it my wife you know she pleaded with me to go and I said no and I called and that i drugged my wife's name into it by lying saying to my wife the bill and she wasn't I'm sorry that i drugged my wife into it but that just shows you what kind of monthly really resulted to that I had to lie and about my family I'm ashamed of myself for what happened there in that episode but later on that evening I called Frank ashen I apologized for that and I said to Frank that I need some help to straighten out my personal life and my problems and and just to get my head straight together what came out of the press was that you had a drinking problem first of all do you have a drinking problem and if you do is it stress-related is it something that came about because it's tough for 25 year-old to handle the pressures of the big leagues and playing in a city like New York no I believe it's a what exactly happened to me real Island in no way shape or form has a drinking problem that is very obvious my teammates my family anyone that knows me knows that there was no way that that is anywhere associated with me my teammates have been behind me 110% through this thing and as far as the press of New York City and everywhere else they have they have a job to do just as neo Allen does I have no personal grudges or vendetta against no press in any way shape or form they have a job to do just as I do they did what they think they were doing right and I did what I felt was right so naturally we clashed this thing came to a head and in the result it made papers throughout the nation it's over with it's done and I don't after today I would not like to rehash it no more okay Neal thank you very much for being with us today Michael thank you Bill and as you look at the 30 rock fact about Reggie Jackson will be featured in one of our two games this afternoon will be with you with scores and highlights and updates throughout the day so sit back relax baseball is next on NBC Monday I love Sydney merrier with glory really go through with it and tie the knot and a family ties last night Hawks rial with Jeffery sidelined by a bad back bridge Smith is the man Gilbert calls on in relief but Tony Perez takes him downtown with two aboard a 205 snap and the Phillies are on their way to a 5-2 victory Tony Perez will be 41 a week from today a 7 and 21 runs this year and he's batting 345 they call on another of the Wiis kids to wrap it up 40-year old Ron Reed the tying run at the plate as the league's batting leader Andre Dawson two aboard two out last of the ninth lead fans Dawson the Philly record 15 and 8 they lead the cards by two in the National League East [Music] NBC towards presents the major league baseball game of the week [Music] today from Olympic Stadium it's pasilla Delphia sillies versus the Montreal Expos and the game of the week is brought to you by Light beer for pillar everything you've always wanted a beer and less by Ford and your Ford dealer if you given a Ford lately by electric shade electric shave does for an electric razor what lather does for a blade and by IBM we're dedicated to the office where it is now and where it will be this past day at Olympic Stadium in Montreal bill Gullickson will pitch for the Expos Larry Christiansen will go for the Phillies hi everybody Bob Costas with Tony Kubek and sitting alongside Mike Schmidt on a hitting tear at the moment and I would guess helped at least a little bit by the hot streak of Tony Perez has been in on no question Bobby it seemed like when I'm not getting a hit now I'm able to get down to first base with a walk and I got 26 runs scored which is that as far as I'm concerned quite a lot for this time of year and it's because of Tony Perez and not only Tony but Bo Diaz who has hit a couple of three-run home runs in the last few ball games we're winning because the Tony Perez right now key hits great hitter with men on base and I just hope he can play like he's 25 years old and be out there every day all year briefly it's cool it's early season there are open dates what happens to the Wiis kids when the dog days arrival it's a good question I guess it's the first year we or anybody that's had a collection of older players like we have in Philadelphia which is what which is why we're not counting our chips right now we realize we're in first place and we realize we're old so let's just wait until July August when we see again hopefully on the game of the week and we can discuss that further let's go over to Tony Kubek now with another of the game's greatest players Andre Dawson all right Bob Hawke when they talk about this Montreal ballclub as being contenders in Eastern Division nationally they talk about the tremendous ability and yet some people may be unfairly among the tag on the ballclub that some do not perform under pressure audience yeah well I think we really haven't been as consistent as we're capable of despite the talent credibility that we do have here we have been over aggressive at times and unaggressive at other times and we haven't performed with the consistency as far as our pitching in a timely hitting all pulling together at the same time and I think in order to have a championship caliber ballclub I'll be a pennant contender you got to do those things and do them consistently consistently you got to perform a lot of basics in the fundamentals and go up and will be aggressive and not oval breasts all right Andre - thanks we'll be back - Olympic Stadium in luxury all with the Scottie lineups right after this [Music] all right we're up 50 we got this game one yeah you can't define a life before Miller yeah like fully one out cigar yeah what can he do to us now [Applause] [Music] anything's good his love Here I am [Applause] Oh like beer from miller everything you always wanted in a beer left famous murmur you know I caught that fall your father gave it to you for your fifth birthday now it's your turn to pass it on any spray paint could make it right again but rust-oleum with an average of 50% more protective ingredients than its nearest competitor can do more it's protective formula not only prevents rust but gives metal better protection against chipping and peeling so if what you're painting isn't ordinary why should you paint the story any metal worth painting is worth protecting suppose your love lose heart and breathing stopped unexpectedly would you know what to do the answer is CPR cardiopulmonary resuscitation don't stand by helplessly while a loved one is dying help the save a light learn the life-saving techniques of CPR call your local chapter of the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association for information about CPR training among the life-saving skills of CPR and help save a loved one's life they spell care the preceding announcement was furnished by major league baseball in cooperation with the Major League Baseball Players Association hi I'm Claude Osteen fish it goes to the Phillies I'm here to give you today's lineup hitting first and leading off for the Phillies Pete Rose and two baseball hitting second Gary Matthews Gary is a street kid and he's about ready to break loose for us hitting third mr. power himself Mike Schmidt hitting fourth Tony Perez playing first base Tony Perez has done everything for us driving all run sent a super ball player of course hitting thin Bo Diaz to catch her Boas mr. three-run homer himself hitting six gary maddox mr center field hitting seven larry Milberg filling in for Joe Morgan today who's injured hitting 8 Ivan DeJesus great shortstop and hitting ninth Larry Christiansen Larry's the kind of pitcher that will give you everything he's got a power pitcher and he should be on his game today [Music] Olympic Stadium Montreal Quebec Canada you can see the wet spots involves my scooter heroes and Tony parents were telling us about being the worst heart officials serving from all those that baseball has been a sterling there are a lot of seeing a lot of rough spots and because it is so wore out all just really stipulates they were since April is hot [Music] can pick up the ball against this made a taciturn but a gig is overcast as it is today it shouldn't be as much of a problem as usual the defense range Dawson karate left to ride in the outfield wall against the third baseman spire who had lost his shortstop job to Brian little isn't short today because Doug Flynn is out of a lineup with little at second base Oliver the first baseman Gary Carter bothered by bronchitis will not catch Bobby Ramos is the catcher for the Expos calling the pitches for Bill gullickson Tony Villa going for the man you might recall and 1980 that was in September right in this ballpark against the Cubs struck out 18 one short of the record of a female by Seaver Kyle for the Nolan Ryan this is a great collection of young pitchers that Galen Cisco the pitching coaches put together they are still learning they are still young two kinds of sliders three kinds of fast balls for gullickson and he throws a fork fall for a straight change last year gullickson was 12 and 14 came on strong in the second half when his e ra was 3.13 he was a tough luck pitcher in eight of his 14 losses the Expos scored either one run or was shutout here's Pete Rose over for last night and at 2:36 on the young season now appearing in his 646 consecutive game he has not yet missed a game in a Phillies uniform just an incredible story some heroes fans are going to get mad at me 256 for Pete Rose Matt 336 as he fouls this one away there's a lot of foul ground in Montreal that this one is beyond the reach of Wallach Dan Ramos meat was telling us before the game he was upset is he on an artificial surface field and last night I hit the ball in the air three times and struck out once we got to hit the ball on the ground and take advantage of the artificial surface Rose in 20 years before this year had missed on 80 game 1970 is missed just nine ball game 1-1 pitch it is bad for foul balls like I'm belated doesn't like a touch better climate plate you can hear his voice fooled all over it was a slider or cut fastball that landed on the fifth [Music] show you how much one pitch means in a baseball game the Rose that was one in one see what we Dalton went off the cloud and then the chin god I don't think that anything and yet such Ritter by sound probably more than sight said it's got a piece of the bat the memory plays showed again heat one of the mask the third-base umpire down there Lee Weyer a replay proved Pete's case pretty conclusively [Music] that live in the one-two pitch is fouled away Dutch Rennert the home plate umpire Lanny Harrison first carry plated section and eyr is Tony men should be up higher a third Petros needs exactly 300 hits to pass Ty Cobb for the all-time leadership in that category table is at 4,000 191 and roses at 3000 892 he balls and two strikes [Music] might have been three and one it's two balls two strikes and you see replay from another a know the ball maybe six inches meet the first we can't believe it hit hard but right at Ryan little [Music] [Applause] seventy one last year in hundred to sixty and the second half is around the 250 mark this year and not to take anything away from one of the greatest players that the game has ever known but I guess it's legitimate to ask the question at age 42 whether or not he can produce the 300 hits he needs to pass cos well when you look if he throws his stats in September over the last few years they have gone down considerably as far as batting average and run production Gary Matthews the leftfielder off to a slow start at 229 that was an interesting ball club I don't think there's any question spite of what Phil makes well Mike Schmidt posed the question he he said he didn't know what's gonna happen either but I think they're going to have to get a lot out of their bench I mean bond haze they gotten the five player deal five four one with Cleveland to become very important to this ball club sometime during this week out now is like so much good breaking ball from Duncan he's ahead of Matthews own to last night both starters mystic stream Lee well Charlie leave for the Expos John Denny for the Phillies neither was involved in the decision [Music] wallets and stripes the message [Music] the air down the left-field line possible trouble a long high up in the fourth ball that is way out and fronted on the end of the bat it was up in the strike zone now Robbins has been God never talk most of the ball games have been cut by Carter Carter spent about five days out with an injured elbow and team ran wild on the catching they were 12 for 12 this is the Blackwell or Ramos who threw the catching Ramos is a native of Havana Cuba emigrated to Miami at the age of 13 played briefly with the Yankees last year before being built early exposure wide and high - and - interesting shot you might have seen that Center for your camera I Ramos tried to decoy Matthews Matthews one of the hitters who will swing that bat around and look down after the signals given to the catch and watch llamas decoy inside now he will shift outside in case Matthews had looked back at the pitch to find out where it was cut fastball it got away from them it's very picking down [Music] Wow God Gullickson spire goes over to knock it down it's a base hit for Matthews galaxy doesn't appear to be too badly hurt right off the ankle wasn't it Bobby look that way but he doesn't appear to be a much pain Tony let's take another look at it that's used the ball outside part of the plate and low inside off to the left a cooler and stepped of gullickson Nazis look with that ball very well Matthew stuff too deep that to the ball the right-field corner last night a line out just pulled one down the left-field line barely foul then he hits one up the middle use the whole field so the Gullickson will take a couple of warmups just to make sure he's all right the strength of this ballclub was supposed to be their pitching staff Reardon is now in a bad back what he private has elbow problems they wonder if you never pitch again amazing a uniform Sanderson nearly severely injured when he was spiked by Claudell Washington dismissed the Achilles tendon they don't need another one out there Mike Schmitt off to a torrid start in his last six games he's 13 for 21 with 10 RBIs and the seasonal total 356 7 and 23 trails Gayle Murphy of Atlanta who has 8 home runs by 1 for the leadership at this stage in the National League and seems to always be the case he leads the league in walks and he leads it on-base percentage his on-base percentage is 510 and how Mike Schmidt hitting style has changed over the last three years when he's up on the plate trying to pull everything now he's way off the plate dives into the ball and he to take pictures best sliders and driving the right-center field for 20 feet hitting changed his philosophy of hitting over the last three years you heard Mike mentioned before the game how all the walks he's been getting and the hot hitting of Perez and Diaz behind him really upped his runs scored total he leads the league in that category with 26 math uses the runner at first he's single with one out interesting contrasts in these two ball clubs who will be contenders right into September for the Eastern Division while the Cardinals I'm sure maybe Pittsburgh if they come along it hard and through for the second base hit of the inning Matthews will stop at second range juggled it but Matthews isn't going anywhere two on one out when you look at this Phillies ballclub ah but you would take their age that they would not have more stolen bases than months lay out and yet they do not stolen month they're all 15 to 13 bases on ball that very big thing that people do not there's another target on-base percentage killers get a lot of base on balls even though Morgan's out today but they score order of those base on ball run down about 113 to this point the other side of the deal let's go rarely good spaces on ball Tony Perez is driven home more runs than any active national leaguer and he's second among all active players to call you from ski the Red Sox she won one out Perez in the cleanup spot makes a good breaking ball for strike Gus Trenor very animated home plate umpire telling us gosh Wisconsin's bathroom in rubbery some basketball my part of the country in the offseason high school mount college if they didn't have scoreboards in the minor leagues early growth the idea to tell the people what to count walk it so one now at banan one on one Perez had the three-run homer his second round trip of the year in the ninth to win the ballgame last night interesting pitch right there something that people instead of this Montreal staff they're young and they want to throw strike they rarely give up walks but they should pitch inside more he cutters off the plate the pitch to Perez from galaxy Tony a good breaking ball hitter last year with the Red Sox Carl Yastrzemski occupying the th spot and a feeling being that Perez could not play consistently at first base he got less than 200 at-bats how often one of the most torrid starts of his career and he'll be 41 in a week [Music] he's a good cook we'll sure kickoff but little was sneaking back please they give me basketball there's Matthew second picking the basketball behind in the count [Music] you want hitch balls for everyone [Music] tony is who look at a guy like Perez there are other people of his Park who are certain Hall of Famers who rose Carlton Schmidt if he keeps going away he's been going but Perez could make quite a case 11 straight years between 67 and 70 70 had 90 RBIs or better don't forget Lefty did I fail to say default who's gonna run in a walk olodum because it'll finish this game sometime this year in fact very unusual may happen for a sparkle first kind of baseball history man if it is 4,000 faith hit the kitchen will learn his clear this game the same scenery rows and counties have a guy like Joe Morgan some people might not realize what a great player he has been through his career in my mind should be a Hall of Famer then you have a Gary Carter and Andre Dawson who have the tools to become Hall of Famers Dilbert came over from Houston this year replaced Jim Fanning at the expo helm bases-loaded Diaz the henna makes a strike last year Diaz made a quantum leap in his offensive production in 81 with the Indians he had seven homers drove in 38 last year with the Phills he at 18 homers and drove in 85 its behind Owen to Pat Corrales is one of Diaz for a long time but he was a Texas managing down there he tried to get Diaz he is familiar with him from winter baseball Perales sitting to the left of your screen back there obviously very relaxed management of his team has been pitching very well and he been swinging the back of the team exceptionally well a lot of runs over the last half dozen games they leave the Cardinals by clearly expose by two and a half in the National League this early stage he has had a grand slammer and a big one earlier this year on the 13th of April to out losing by three last of the ninth against the slam against Rio island of the Mets turned a nine six deficit into a dramatic 10 9 win at Philadelphia he's been playing hurt he had a hole quick plays in fact very few thought he played yesterday let alone today after Rose grounded out Matthews and Schmidt singled Perez walked the bases are loaded with one down held up on it it's too soon [Music] Golic sin has been an excellent control picture very good strikeout to walk ratio and he's averaged less than two and a half walks per nine innings throughout his career good double play possibility if you can sink the ball down low on deer up the middle and through for a face in at least two real score fielded cleanly by Dawson out there Perez must stop at second base it's two nothing Phillies and I will pop Galen Cisco the pitching coach how many times you see that base on balls tucked in the middle of it anywhere it keeps the rally going the replay almost sets up outside poor follows who got hit that hard if that kid touched catch part of his bare hand I don't think so it's instinctive to swipe at it that way but it probably does you more harm than good chances are you won't field it and chances are pretty good that if it clips your hand you're going to wind up hurt it's always been a controversy among 15 coaches and managers as to whether or not to take a youngster like gongsan and make him stop with a good follow-through some people say yes they should especially on the artificial surface he becomes the fifth infielder but you risk you run the rest if you change his follow-through that he loses something off the pitch maybe and hurt his arm some say yeah change it some people do it you might hurt together center fielder Gary Maddox off to a fast start himself at 3:45 takes strike one he's been high up until thankfully that's so hot they said the youngster popped her near down and really was a hot player for them last year when Phillies got into gear he had a good good May last year schematics this guy's a better hitter than people might realize droning for lifetime 287 man hit 3:30 for the Phillies a few years ago I think he's got a little rejuvenated when he had some pressure put on last almost lost a job and was trade bait during the offseason because of Bernier leather push himself a little bit you can really run the ball down in the opportunity to center fielders today as good as anybody in the game both capable of playing very shallow Dawson right now is playing through the people in a roamer in a softball game that explains just a shell look at that a lot of room behind nobody has confidence that he can go back gullickson and head o matic so ensued they was alive with the foul ball down the right side Tony they don't limit the goals love any longer to specific outfield positions so three center fielders could receive gold gloves and I believe he did in the National League last year with Maddux Dawson and Dale Murphy I think that's wrong you might be right is it wrong yeah if the guy plays right field he's outstanding in his position he should get it for being a right fielder not just mouthfeel another foul only there certain ball partial rights the applause Emily Parker's one is tougher than centerfield Nagy's didn't left feel discomfort in centerfield sorry centerfield isn't always the most demanding out the in position I thought you meant the fact that I gave was wrong Randy was wrong never questioned all the toothpicks another foul and he stays alive so because more than one centerfielder can win it Maddox has won eight consecutive gold glow Dawson has won three consecutive Gold loves the record for Gold Glove by an outfielders Roberto Clemente a 112 Willie Mays at 11 [Music] fifth foul ball by Maddox to this at-bat after the count went to own to function experiencing one of the problems that some young pitchers experienced off and on finishing off hitters I think a guy that once struck out 18 the game to just wipe the hitter away five or six good pitches you have still got the ball up to the strike zone two on one out top half of the first two already home for the Phillies another foul it's good pitch low and outside right where is Ramos set up but he fouls it back unofficially gullickson has already thrown 32 pitches in this first inning good crowd here in this ballpark whoops the fella was sleeping that woke him up all moan during explains of all approaches is noggin Maddox when he got two strikes went to get more of the crowd spread out Oh another six inches barely taking his drive just trying to put the ball in play I'm a veteran hitter one two pitch from gullickson thematics he got straight at all of you mix up the heel right back in same spot no head movement to say get that part of the bat on the ball making Gullickson work now he's going back to the dugout I don't think and this goes with battery call that the on-deck hitter is Larry Milburn Joe Morgan was hit hard on the takeout slide on a possible DoublePlay by Gary Carter last night and injured a hamstring of it so the switch hitter Milburn replaces him today at second base this is going to be quite a managing challenge for Pat Corrales this year he has older players he has players of diverse skills and how he manipulates the lineup and how keeps them rested through July and August and into September they tell a story for the Scully Club finally God can win the extended battle with max we'll be back with more birds at that after detective certain rocks in the year Thank You bobbin in Detroit the Tigers and the Angels Lou Whitaker a leadoff home run off of Jeff's onto the opposite field Brian downing up the wall but it's over Lou Whitaker led off last night with a home run he now has two in two days and two for the year one nothing Tigers in second let's go back to Montreal [Music] and the much travelled Larry Milburn steps in he's been with Houston Seattle the Yankees the twins the Indians the last three all left he came in that ballgame last night Bob for Morgan and he may have saved the game with the ground standard iron off-balance throw behind second base play shortstop he didn't a theater play off part of World Series second base third base pinch it pinch run they will see a lot of service dispensed this year in the filling the fills have a stretch just after the all-star break where they played 21 games in 20 days players like maze Melbourne gross will be very very important than tonic aw jeepers Jonah as we virtual Sun is the coast of San Diego is going to be very important to the Diaz is not to be a on 150 BC Virgil's really improved it's going very well popped up all of the calls for it justice Alabama Texas [Music] produce to Expo is coming up how can a guy five night have an unfair advantage over these guys I use the Gillette after razor they don't accept the advantage of a pivoting head after as better the twin blade razors that don't pivot see they don't always stay in my beard but my anthro pivots to keep both blades on my beard longer so I get a better shape close comfortable yet the Gillette atra and get the a dreaded Vantage sometimes a little advantage goggle long dreary Jackie Stewart evaluates the first turbo powered Thunderbird the car directionally is very stable partly because of the excellent dealer dynamics it's a well-balanced car and that what you look for one piece of machinery that acts always one the car is so clean the drive so precise the drive you feel as if you're part of that car just doesn't give you the concept to prove it to you it's a very very good car have you driven a Ford lately hello there I'm Ellen Cisco the pitching coach of the Montreal Expos at this time I'd like to give you bill birnes lineup for the day leading off is Timmy Raines our fleet little left fielder very exciting on the faces Thanks Warren for Marty batting third Andre Dawson one of the most exciting in the game batting Corson cleanup al Oliver batting fifth and playing third base Timmy Wallach bang six and playing shortstop Chris fire batting seventh and place of Gary Carter Bobby Ramos batting eighth and playing second base Brian little and pitching for the next close today will be billed golestan who pitched an outstanding game two years ago he struck out 18 tub and one ball go one nine inning game one of the most outstanding performances that I've seen since I've been in the game but he had a very very long half of the first daleks ended about 25-30 minutes there's a defense raised [Music] I'm Kristen cork accompanying the Matthews Maddox rolls in the outfield Schmidt case Milberg has it first the architecture and there's Christmas there a tough luck pitcher had a lot of injuries interesting to see he warmed up about 30 minutes ago or pitches now how they would stand that long piece fell on the bench Tony he had his third elbow operation in the offseason this year to remove some loose particles in that elbow he's also had a broken collarbone at another time in his career this is nice big league season open for the strike a Tim Raines Raines who's hitting 236 he's over 300 at 306 from the left side but he's at Oh 74 as a right-handed batter met while up for the bag Brad's up tight at first thing two quick strikes Tim's on a rough start because the batting average is so low and reigns has not walked that often he's drawn eleven free passes this year a respectable figure but not an especially high one for a leadoff man it's cut down his opportunities to steal he swiped six this season he's led the National League in that category each of his first two years with 71 and the strikes shortened season of 81 and then 78 last year [Music] Christensen a guy was a very very live on that back problems coming off the pulled hamstring for his last start and giving a little night in it there's the curveball as a good slider good straight change excellent move to first base if somebody should get on you look at the ability and even the well well-trained athletes some people think he changed to hard stretches the muscles to much that's why he gets injured this was outside so after two quick strikes now to count us out full deranged that very easy delivery that he had stairs almost straight up lands on that clubfoot it's a lot of jarring the arm is fast Bullock's a lot quicker to a hitter trail engine light and gullickson is the type of pitcher who doesn't walk [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Warren Kalani oculus 283 start he's run his right-field job back combination of the strong spring training that Cromartie had and the lingering effects of Terry Francona's knee injury from last season he's got his job back to take a quick look over Christiansen to appear to see if he uses the move he uses a move that some say is a balky bend that left knee and then goes to first base is very quick graves probably doesn't ready we'll try and draw some toes to see if he can read him there's pictures won't show there good move until they absolutely want to pick a guy off last year in stealing 78 bases Raines was caught stealing 16 times but that's misleading he was only thrown out by the catcher six times the other ten will pick hogs it's almost impossible even if you get a picture with a quick move to the plate a clean release and a clean tag it's almost impossible to catch range Steve Barr hey come on Lanny Harris first base up a quick look came back standing up Perez swipe tag didn't knock him off the base and he almost went on his own I'll replay back the umpire up that time the foot did come off for an instant but he got it back before Perez who say it's out ste borrows now the manager of the Oakland A's needs to be the first base coach and occupied the first base box with the stopwatch so it could time the runners and the pitchers move when he was the first base coach for the Expos he figured that it took reigns 11 strides and a slide to get the second base and he did it in 3.2 seconds he's off here's the flaw [Applause] morals also features that a reasonably quick delivery to the plate by a distance of 1.4 seconds and a quick release by the captured some two seconds flat so you figured out the mathematics are all at range whose favor even if you do everything right and the throw is right on the money you're not going to have much chance together he has sinks Kavala second base luckily they prevented from going to the outfield where they held rain stole his second now ground ball to the right side would advance into third from what he hit the side away because you know of course we see that over here with it's out with a stopwatch timmy raids actually didn't like me never said anything he's kind of a quiet kid but he felt me watch him again understand he felt it for too much focused on him and everybody was watching captures he wanted to kind of surreptitiously go out there do his job he didn't think boss was getting that opportunity rough spot with his love job walks up down between the last couple of years lastly could not tie the number 200 maybe shy sauce in there for a while they had more than a dozen guys bad in the numbers old Scott Christiansen Spears it rains will have to hold and Cromartie is thrown out one of the three worst things he could have done strike hop hop hopping into or hit right back to the pitcher once in pull off this fall he's trying to get a natural full hair come on he takes the pitch this outside artist like so wasn't very disciplined assisted to look the baton a DJ loafers they assert veteran team knows how to make out anymore make out that situation Andre Dawson's 384 is a league-leading figure at this stage that attendance [Music] that squirrel hits in his last 24 at-bats compressive enough hit 500 for six games how about Rod Carew is approaching 100 at-bats he's got forty eight hits in 96 at-bats defending 500 on May 7th fret like a status bill addressed about cross 64 not a few ballgames let came back against Dave Steve of Toronto last night got two more base hits Brett's hit in all 17 games in which he's played this year it argued his statement for the people here Montreal that I've achieved the best right-hander pitching baseball right now not Steve Rogers something he could be this incredible would events Steve beat Kansas City 30 days last night a ball and two strikes to Dawson sometimes numbers don't tell the whole story Dawson's record we been on base batting average has not been exceptional for player of his caliber he's the kind of pitcher and I really mean that I would pitch from stretched him all the time even though bambam why because pitch watch his late kick the leg kick that's his timing device when a pitcher goes into his wind-up he has a longer deliver he can time it better when he picked us from a stutters his shorter delivery and I really think it upset too tiny and that's Cleary I'm not saying it's assault and he picks up that left leg he keeps it up hiding the pitchers motion usually when people say a guy's not a good clutch hitter there's some implication that there's something lacking in his character you're saying that maybe the fact that it's climbing in Canada when he hits with men on base its mechanical rather than cytologic I think so plus another thing too is remember the on-base percentage of a mini veteran hitting hitting homers not as high as when you've got to the village at a time they don't walk so he has less opportunity and you learn to hit under pressure by hitting under pressure he has met as many opportunities in his father's falkland last year he had 301 with 23 homers but had a relatively low RBI total 83 and over 600 at-bats not an embarrassing figure but it's not an overly impressive one al Oliver talking about guys with a chance for the Hall of Fame his credentials are there it's hard at the hey sirs has it no throw Perez fields it the runner to third with two down with the right back but Oliver's at-bat but first to New York elsewhere the major leagues this afternoon the Tigers and the angels are tied at two walking foots a home run for the Tigers Braves one Astros nothing home run number seven for Bob Horner and the Blue Jays lead the Royals 6-3 but George Brett has homered his first two trips to the plate let's go back to Montreal while we were talking about Brett a minute ago Tony had a three Homer game couple of weeks ago against the Tigers he's got two in his first two at-bats I guess the hamstring injury in the short layoff didn't hurt him too much Oliver cuts on the first one Montero is enough room here mitt [Applause] so a leadoff walk and a stolen base by rains is wasted he's left stranded a third one complete in Montreal the Phillies lead the Expos - OH given read my name in all the papers on how I saw it on cable Keystone Kenny has my name taken crook yzma game introducing a hilarious new video Dodgers in the Padres only on NBC sport well some stadiums have monuments in center field and a drastic walls and left or I've around the fences here they've got that eyesore that terrible crane out in dead center field that is not a pretty sight to be perfectly honest and let's pause for station identification on the NBC television network this is channel 5 WPTZ Plattsburgh North Pole burling's I don't know if such renters going to have any voice left by the time we play nine here strike one called at the hey-zeus starting the Philly second I wonder police regret the deal which sent Larry Bowa not so much ball because he's in his mid to late 30s now but a ryne sandberg along with and for the Cubs for the hey-zeus hamburg off to another off start but you've got a chance to outstanding player well this Phillies ballclub losses trio last year he won a big contract five or six years guaranteed for big numbers one of the reasons they did not want to give him that kind of money if they got a kid in want Sam well from the Dominican Republic maybe a year maybe two years away control bargains a stopgap move but he has a chance of an outstanding player from everything I've seen check swing foul - and to the counter - hey Zeus so trio was one of five players the Phillies packaged and sent to Cleveland for the highly regarded young outfielder von Hayes but Hayes first injured a leg now has a sore shoulder Perez has emerged as one of the league's hottest hitters and Hayes for the moment is a reserve now Maddox and Matthews were hurt in spring training at I mean Pete Lowe said look Tony Perez was hacked how's the right feels you put it at first later has paid off good pitch by tonight I would have sold that Galen Cisco the pitching coach after the rough ending that gullickson had for 38 pitches and we'll conference will in china straighten something out mechanically to try and get the ball down low the strike zone he did that last picture for Gullickson his second strikeout of the ball game Larry Christianson by reputation a good hitting pitcher he's without a hit this season in seven at-bats first pitch swinging grounds to Speier for the second out [Applause] [Music] two out and nobody horde and crows who grounded a second to start the ballgame Tony mentioned earlier he's playing in his 646 consecutive game there are only two players in history who have had to separate consecutive game streets of more than 500 this guy and Charlie Gehringer the great second baseman for the Tigers like one call of our older he puts on a uniform and body feels like it's cool 19 until what again i I've never seen such intensity intensity such enthusiasm day in and day out and how many people interviewed him up there today he talked to him maybe enjoy broadcasting the building in English this was credited back to Philadelphia he wants to innovate he gives them all the time took time out to drift over by the stands we sign a few autographs he's behind on the count one two ball one Charlie loud hitting theories have come from watching Pete Rose like the Rose takes the pitch he watches it right in the catcher's glove Charlie law calls head disappointed a little glue hung up longer than I thought it would and in the top half of a second after one and a half of Montreal the Phillies still lead Cena [Music] while expire and Ramos in the expose second against Larry Christiansen wallak off to a slow start at 2:44 with a couple of homers last year he hit 28 and drove in 97 runs did it pretty quietly that's the average fan car run some of the big hitters on the Expo ballclub probably take a while before they thought of Wallach now you wouldn't think that he would have driven in more than Andre Dawson but he did I'll tour they'll try in pitching he's a pretty good lowball hitter Billy DeMars the third-base coach the hitting instructor has worked with him to feel his hands get out the inside pitching high his hands a little bit away from his body and raised them below the tree to get that high pitch of the cutter good meaning that they were grafted consistently up high to the later professor exactly straight which may be low in challenge straight constraint held up on it three balls and a strike Oh [Music] [Applause] pretty good authority oh and God [Applause] number three and the funny lead is cut to t21 in this ballpark Tony it's sometimes difficult to judge live walls off the bat especially because we're so far from home blame this one fooled me a bit and also there's so much rule between the outfield fence and the permanent destruction behind walking a very important guy g50 start hitting players ball cut there of course the professor Gokhale embossing is while they're hot while they're just starting it that would be a gesture day are they're hot witches will pick them out of a tough situation to get the wallet let's see stark city [Music] strike one is the catholic respire spire with just a sick heat that matter the season after losing in shortstop drought the Brian Miller playing as we mentioned earlier because duh Quinn is out of the lineup and little has been fitted to second base this did a very steady job for this ballclub last year Ozzie Smith the only one have been asking me that choice absolutely fewer errors than he did and he drove in 60 which is a total for shortstop especially when we find at your batting eighth sometimes and down in the lineup where they're not going to give you many strike and have the d h of course from his leg a lot of breaking balls in number eight usually pictures follow in the air to centerfield Matic for graceful a take Maddox has a theory first of all why places shallow the obvious in fact from told me once in a couple of years ago when I completed he said it's trees I play shallow because I like to give it a seed and catch a sign I keep coming in here I can see the sign and see the location of the pitch it helps me to be a better centerfield and anticipate one thing that I said to go to that place now feel more part of the data at plays out [Music] imagine Bobby Ramos in place of Gary Carter who balls and no strikes baramos whose fifth at-bat of the year he's super for so far Carter has led national league catchers in games caused six straight years averaging around a hundred fiftieth season the combination of bronchitis and a sore elbow had him out of the lineup today we played last night even though he wasn't feeling well at all came up to me before the game said just don't ask no burden said one of the toughest verbal battles yet to have the spring was getting Carter his office and saying you are not going to catch under 50 games this year Carson why that significant catch maybe hundred 3540 will pinch-hit through the try and find a place right field for the other occasion I don't want to Jeff I was 50 again this year I don't know if it was coincidence or the elbow Tony the Carter did not look good throwing the ball last night he had three throws way off the mark on attempted field bottle [Music] if you don't have to be told that's rendered to follow that when a strike pretty tough slider very hard slider from Kristensen just exploded he's going to it again look at that come out is not standing on one thing they will watch very close to sub pictures you do not count pitches for you can say wow how do you feel and you said that feel well I'm throwing the ball out it is out you let him in the Christiansen they talk right around hundred pitches that is it absolutely but they think in a hundred they know that it's not calming [Music] strike out was Christensen's first Brian littles the hitter and Mike Schmidt comes way in a definite threat to bunt slaps it to short the haters gobbles it up and throws him out it's a wonder it's not a one two three began with a homer of the Madam Wallach and then Speier Ramos little right down amplitude Billy doodle Expos one back at the V Festival Expos man Donald Sutherland this is not the kind of celebrity who shows up in a World Series game and make sure he gets a seat by the TV camera this is a legitimate fan I was in st. Louis once Expo is playing a key series with the Cardinals Sutherland flew into town for the whole series had no business there just wanted to see the ballgame two years ago he's on location in Europe and during the playoffs he's got a full line hooked up and listen to the entire ballgame he cost me $20,000 got a fan hope the Expos one Gary Matthews whose nickname is Sarge on this Philly ballclub Pete Rose hung that tag on him because he thinks Matthews takes charge like a sergeant would 1o pitch two balls and no strikes to him leading off the Philly third [Music] one of these guys we tried to chime teacher Kent II would say don't copy Gary Matthews what's the bat keep going and we talk about a hitch and the whole bat cleanup well he is ready to the ball into the hitting area adorable play to Matt he's played in 162 games last year only five players in the National League did that his teammate Rose was one of them hit hard wallet knows about water physics proving as a third baseman he had a lot of trouble early last year moved from the outfield may 23 errors on the season but most of them came in the first half and then he got steadier the year progressed there was so much instability on this link you'll ask a wallet coming in occurred all the cutting over Thursday eight different second baseman until up Flynn took over they got hit on the trade and that's tough to do pretty central manager contend where the gym panting for a while he had a lot of problems with Mike Smith had a single in the two-run Philly first which means the Schmidt is 14 for his last 22 his average has climbed above 360 look at how far he is from the plate if he cannot reach the outside corner and yet a lot of teams still trying to drill the ball inside on him as he dives into the ball cell first by moving back in the batter's box and away from the plate gives a split second longer for a hitter to look at the pitch thinking you've got about two fifths of a second that makes a big decision we spoke quick his second straight base hit and he just won't cool off big turn at first but he'll hold there as reigns gets it back in [Music] there's a guy you know one time was strike me out 150 170 times and see the head phisycal we talked about the hit down on the ball let me go up as the ball goes off the bat the head is going down and watch it spit now 15 hits in his last 23 at-bats and even that doesn't tell the full story because he's been walking a lot so if you extend it to plate appearances the guy's been on base about 70 to 80 percent of the time in his last thirty to thirty five plate appearances now when Morgan is playing Zelda hamstring so when he's on he's getting 20-plus walks ready this year even goes batty ever doesn't show up he's critical been on and you can't concern honor because Perez has been so hot so they're finally after tips killer last year sometimes a year before they refuse to toll should expect the wall that everybody else stays hot if you have to pick somebody yesterday was a good day for the oldsters Perez will be 41 in a week game-winning home run in the night Ron Reed who's 40 got the victory and relief of John Denny Burt campaneris just called up by the Yankees went four for five and a Yankee win last night he's 41 years old see if there's room here Oliver I play [Applause] [Music] all scoop what happened he is the great racquetball player he's played against some world's championship class racquetball players Marty Hogan ends up scored 13 14 points off me he once told him I really laid hands on a racquetball player Jack Newfield said if he played one year of intense competition to become a world champion racquetball player is about 37 years old each supplier who actually has improved all around especially addict hitters as he moves into his mid-30s even the great ones tend to taper off a bit but he actually if you were to chart his career the graph has been upwards since the age of 30 you cannot hold Mike Schmidt to light you down at first base either if you allow him to get a walking lead even though he's coming off that I have to stop it Easter day he will go like he did last night and try and make him stop they tell you does kind of ease off hold the ball in the fourth pitcher grounded this short expired a little for the force makes it by spinning two and a half those leave the Expos to one we'd like to give you a quick demonstration of the IBM display writer office system it lets you type edit and file electronically it points out misspelled word and the correct alternative it can I think we need a bigger place I've never read the truck it's easy to move yourself with a jar Tran truck or trailer chart rain bands even have automatic transmission and power steering right now along with a low price you get unlimited mileage on one-way moves [Music] I musta forgot Jerry for long moves or chops elsewhere the major leagues in Baltimore the Orioles after trailing for nothing to the A's have taken the lead on those 10 singles in RBI Eddie Murray scores earlier singleton had a two-run homer Orioles 584 top of the fourth let's go back to Montreal body from the right side and 82 and a slow start this year on this last week or so for the Orioles he's really been hot started in Seattle took it down to California now again for the agency on conditioning : they found was right arm was so much weaker that his left eye he had to build it up he said he's swinging the bat as well as was three years ago garlic's in whose without a hit in eight at-bats starts it in the third for the Expos we trail at two one this telecast is presented by authority of Major League Baseball and is intended solely for the private non-commercial use of our audience any publication reproduction retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball is as we all know by now strictly prohibited [Music] two balls and a strike to bill galaxy watch Larry Christensen land on his front left foot who did buckle that stiff leg many people feel that that is one of the reasons for his elbow problem so much strain and also yes that's a congenital lower back problem it really takes a lot of jarring that is even the gullickson leading off the third gets--he's baton it pops it up alright one out a little bit of sunshine now Tony we feared rain is about a 60 to 70% chance of it's very overcast at the start of the game getting brighter as we move along so the forecasters were wrong they said it was an 80% chance of rain just a little sprinkle before the game wrong to this point anyway Tim Raines walked and then stole second his first time up comes a bunt and his ball one I think it's interesting and I love to watch the center fielders and defensive move no Maddux was playing reins a little bit people then he did some power hitters over the left center field one of the reasons probably is so you can kind of ball the gap so you can hold against a look at where Maddux in news playing pollinators be odd about that shallow even left the holy Carson right-center field by oh geez I am away in let's play thy parents love it he's got to feel like a young Colt game winning home run last night nice play ranging to his right and he got the past man off the base map we'd like so now Cromartie is fouled away one on one he misses the social life down there it is nobody to talk to the record deal he talked the fans up here at home he should have talked to me this ballpark instead the outfield is especially tough if you're not hitting because all you have to do out there is think about what's going wrong at the plate where is there's too much to do on the infield as well on it you have to concentrate too much galaxy has sunlit after that first rough heading through 38 pitches change up misses go said take a look at guys who play the outfield who are not hitting watch them between pitches very often you'll see them assume batting stances they'll be shuffling around it's obvious been talking to themselves in the air down the right side Cromartie toward the line in satellite you know it's tougher to play the outfield for a number of reasons an artificial surface because the ball speech from gamma to stretch but another thing is position yourself defensively you have no reference point on certain grass straight away whatever that is you wear a little patch out McGrath an artificial surface you've got to really watch your foul line whether the other outfielders an infield to get a reference point ecology or which way you should play and playing defense on the turf is OP obviously much more difficult important the conditioning is much more strategic aspire it's short especially infield defense that's one of the key is for the Expos and they improved over last year's performance they yielded 78 unearned runs in 1982 the highest total in the National League you don't find many contenders who will lead the league in unearned runs Allowed we have about 40 years or more at the corners of the infield Wallach and Oliver strike one the switch little hairy retired at 11 of the last 12 batters sick to those by ground balls just the single by schmidt in the third so the iron Doc's have probably had that first inning he's had the ball down lower this last year they view tapes filmed everything of pictures and when something goes wrong you can put that video cassette in or the way this gaming become more scientific and even a guy was going well where he was stepping where his release point was in the picture and then adjust the pitchers pitching coaches and hitting coaches have to have all this photographic memory didn't do that day the course of the game about one little flaw one two from Gullickson to Christiansen respecting the fact that Christiansen by reputation is a good hitter Gullickson is throwing in breaking balls pretty good at pushing snappy enough out there crowd how about Terry Forster he doesn't get to bat that often because he's a relief pitcher hey guys a lifetime 420 hitter that's not just in pair 11 at-bats he's hit about 65 or 70 times in his career and he's got 130 hits [Music] pretty good cokehead now there Burtie for atlanta jewelers quality of garber remember try to umpire from the center-field camera with the aim looks like it's outside maybe it was but I wouldn't they definitely so Renard is considered one of the best ball and strike umpires in the National League he called a game championship game the Phillies a couple of years with a Bob Boone swore was the best game you've ever had umpire I don't play dumb party heat rose at over two ball one soon the garlic has come way up in a survey last year Tony Philly leadoff men hit a composite 237 now Rose was the leadoff man part of the time but not most of the time usually he was batting second the interesting figure Philly leadoff men scored 82 runs last year by contrast the Cardinals who won the pennant had a hundred 25 runs scored by their leadoff man little number with Gullickson here the throw goes out Rose may have been trying to slap that ball by the third base for the wall act who was that but Gullickson now has gone more to the seeker you can see by the ground ball out he's gotten beat captain so somebody be it rose or maybe morgan'll they'd like to hit Morgan a little lower in the batting order well maybe sometime in the future dernier he seems to have the capabilities but hasn't put it together yet to be an outstanding leadoff man somebody's going to have to assume that role for the Phillies because it's going to sore spot the past couple years last year the footage got off to a very slow start there was something like 9 and 14 and then there near got hot and the collision went 19 and 8 in the month of May ironically another center fielder got hot even taking in target of a lot of other players Perez and Schmidt Maddux has gotten hot in the midst of his streak with a Phillies starting off this season for the time being at least your nears consent back to the minors put the Philly people don't think it'll be for long they'll make some roster moves juggle a bit and get him back here he was switch-hitting in the spring of the year convinced to do so by Corrales but they think he went back to ready we're not even sure here that that he's going to go back to the city right handed [Music] latest man straight away healing up the middle one to the left side very very quick back the weight to the guess he was a cocktail party or something when Ted Turner let it be known that he would love to have Gary Matthews mr. Blake you had heard about it considered to be tampering fine Turner and then all of a sudden Turner turned on Matthews and didn't like him at all look in Philadelphia pay off fish down the right-field side and plenty of trouble is fair but foul while to kick that ball around was his glove waited till the last Drive just trying to put a little play I wonder if it's a little difficult to see right now do you think there is some Sun out in center field should be a good background you can see it's black just little that Sun behind the picture of the glare affecting some of these hitters I really think what post pictures of destiny good stuff like that a few out walk to Gary Matthews and that'll give Mike Schmidt a crack at it Schmitt is two for two a pair of singles his batting average has crept up above 360 he has 15 hits in his last 23 at-bats this guy Tony is in the top six or seven all-time in home run frequency he's hit a home run once every fourteen point seven times it back that puts him in the company of people like Killebrew Tyner Mantle McCovey Matthews course the leader is Willie Mays an astounding figure he hit one every eleven point seven times it bad and the guy in the number two spot is kind of one for every fourteen point one so rude was in a league of his own when it came to power stats but Schmitt is pretty close to the others you know is a kidney American League and I don't know what's going to happen to him yet 50 home runs at Edmonton last time talking about Rob King 40 home of the year before the bull Greg luzinski we've added three four spotless Schmidt all those years in Philadelphia so the kennel is the same kind of player at this stage of his career Schmidt London they strike got 150 under seventy times he can hit it up hold on and if he improves like Schmidty could be the same kind of hitter that's saying awful lot that suspending against an opinion this guy led the league in strikeouts with from four years one time 180 doesn't get many based on ball he's cut down his strikeouts last year 130 any more walks or more discipline youngster kindles among the American League leaders in RBIs right now sit in the long ball for them three-dose slider I would say the respectful Smith we at oh and he's too and outside the guys this hot may be better off pitching around and putting it on that was a report on Brett before he got into the super Scott to saying look keep the ball away can anything he hits he's turning on for next to basics if you walk them walking even with two benign on the other hand you walk them your face Perez was batting about 350 himself going on three and one fouled back and out of play that's surprising I don't know Smita standing up there like he may have thought it was surprising sometimes hitters don't like it I don't old Morgan ever did was Cincinnati he didn't want anybody running off first patient old Sparky answer that because it distracted him because that's it after the Schmidt but again if they have been either cut fast follows slider that he threw Schmidt it possible at Matthew's forgot the count and thought it was full it got a result about Oliver was playing behind them is now again Holly will be running now know what they're gonna say is before this kind of given the base we watched it anyway Jeff after the galaxy was behind Prieto comes back the fans Smith no runs a waka opposite field home run off of Jeff Vaughn and Alla Tigers trail the Angels 4-3 that game is now in the bottom of the fifth let's go back to Montreal now we go to the bottom of the fifth here with Ramos little and Gullickson d for the exposure and the fifth Massey's walked around that walk Villa gullickson struck out the side he controls and Schmidt on x-ray to fastball [Music] Christensen's first pitch to Ramos fouled away what do you think about Christmas and last year his record was nine and ten but the Phillies won 22 and lost 11 in games that new started he had a good earned run average and just came out as a tough luck pitcher in some decisions or wasn't involved in the decision but kept them close enough so that ultimately they wanted Phillies bullpen seems to be considered considerably stronger we should Al Holland Zeeland from a giant L against an arm concert he's a big strike not that you can pull very high ogia Sox have been busy today they searched those Ramos out [Music] I've got about seven eight chances for shortstops today says over they quick count we may come up with something this is Bob Smith whale again as his Perez or little not only can but we can stop the bye-bye all bye it tries to drag one but Christiansen makes the good play and throws him out little had a hundred eleven base hits last year in the minor leagues at Wichita and 24 of them were bunched so they've got him pretty well scouted they know that he's going to try and let lay one down if you give him any opportunity at all you know he came up he got a little bit of a bad break they play for the bucket he was just trying to get Perez to go off the bag and have him feel the ball and he felt he could beat Kristensen to the bag this ball may have it the CBP the dirt in the grass and death a keyword hit it just hit a clump of dirt bounced straight up but didn't really stay down he gets the ball by person-centred Herod as the field he eats in the bag he will find with a number of artificial surface fields in the national league including his home park the 24 punt hitch will be a lot harder to come by in the major leagues than in the minors on the other hand with them playing tight firm at the corners there will be enough Falls you will hit that will get by the third and first baseman because of the turn and because it's keeping in little probably balance out two balls in the strike to count the Gullickson honey we've talked about the designated hitter rule and about expansion and some other changes in baseball and we each find them objectionable to one extent or another this one fouled back and have enough room but of all the changes in the game a game which admittedly remains relatively unchanged when you look at its lengthy history but of all the recent changes the worst is artificial surface without any question well I've often wondered if they've and they did it could an asterisk or the trick behind Maris's 61 home runs why don't they put some asterisk behind those we get a lot of basics they wouldn't have gotten an artificial surface but if you can't quantify it how many more hit an artificial surface differently is kind of hit oh yeah how much does it hurt of ER a of a pitcher not only does it change the game but cosmetically it's awful compare a natural surface filled with real dirt in a real ballpark for someplace that looks like the play in baseball in outer space with a crazy carpet of all different colors faded going to the strikes out I'm gonna make there by the same arm one fillings like all actors I have an agent sign that and a business manager pay that and a secretary don't lose that luckily Karen's come up with personal cartridge copiers you know the entire coupling process is in here so maintenance is as simple but you want the taste of a truly great beer tonight let it be low and bro know I can always use a couple of deckhands [Music] elsewhere the major leagues in Detroit the Tigers have tied things up against the California Angels John walking foot who homered earlier drops in this lazy flyball to score Lance Parrish it is now four for the Angels and tigers a tie in the bottom of the fifth interesting assignments this year for these two guys for Pat Corrales to nurse of veteran roster through 162 games and for Bill Virdon to try and do what the critics said Jim Fanning couldn't do get the most out of one of the most talented rosters in baseball well over the last four years the Montreal Expos have had the best overall record in all of baseball we've had trouble getting over the hump from September's and some league championship series but I would think with the talent it is an enigma to Bill Bergey as it was to Fanny and dick Williams before Perez has walked and fouled out Lani Harris says yes it's a strike is dust runner check with him I should correct myself back in the fifth inning talking about striking out the side rolls rounded out Schmidt struck out distance and struck out on the walk to Matthews that's close enough we talking about the artificial surface at the end of the last inning one thing you do have to say trying to be fair is that to play on artificial surface where speed is so important it affects the game in one sense in a positive way in that it makes it a more aggressive game no class I'm going to take the extra base there are stats to prove that the stolen base ratios are more successful on the turf because you can run fast and you get more quick more bangbang plays rolls bounced or in the outfield the basic still it's my feeling that even if you play on natural surface speed is still going to be a very important element it's still going to be a plus maybe not for the distorted extent that is on artificial surface but to a large extent it's a called third strike on Tony Piraeus a the galaxy is fifth strikeout garlic sedan Kristensen I've really gotten the grille has been just one fly ball to the outfield lost Alex and that was by Rose packed in the second about eight ground ball that cut fastball again that some pitching coaches do not believe should be taught to young pitchers they think it has their arm Galen Cisco much else has not sold to keep you right we don't want any arm twisting or anything at the elbow slow rolling 1/3 Wallach with the help of a good scoop by Oliver retires Diaz you check his swing you're not going to get a very good jump out of the box why like playing well off the line and defense plenty of time the gala Galen Cisco teaches that cut fastball and right-handed at me the ball will run in under fists of the left handed hitter or a way for right handed hitter he doesn't all the ball off-center never doesn't exert any additional finger pressure so just a natural length of your middle finger you grip the ball and throw like a fastball make a fastball if you hold the seams right use the seams for the rotation up down toward first base Oliver with Gullickson covering get secure that's another 1-2-3 inning we've gone through five and a half this game will be try to log down and the fellas on the strength of you were the first still have the 2-1 lead 17 out that's how getting squad position on his old by steal raised with a good lead at first Bluffs the go strike one call on the inside corner how quick would you say Christensen's move not to first but to the plate is Tony that's the difference is quick the first base look at that fastball tailing back and a little could help this catch of Diaz you just press that ball the inside quarter he's cooked the first but that leaf kick we make some slow to home plate as you will toss over we talked earlier about Steve burrows and his calculations with a stopwatch he figured Gary Carter was the quickest catcher in the National League at releasing the ball getting it down a second 1.8 seconds and Jim kaat with that almost no wind up delivery out of the stretch at one point one second he was the quickest to the plate among pitchers what rays will be trying to do now is read the moves any quick move by Kristen's old either moved to first base or a pitch out you will not go anything a little bit slower he's way for the first time in this ball game reigns has decided to stay at second and the ball was included very far but that was all the daylight he needed he took off again makes it the third so it's a Christian cinema last inning as Melbourne lays down for a dancing and may have hit him though as he came out of the box play call by the first base umpire that's literally blacked out he followed the play and he waited through the call from the first base umpire Randy Harris Milberg could not avoid the little bouncing ball we'll give you a look at it again they're playing here looking for a bunt bollocks ten starts moving over now we've seen trying to avoid the ball running inside the line right about there goes off his right foot it caught him back at about a second stride off the right foot now if I'm not mistaken Christensen is the player closest to the play we get to put out I rather Gullickson i'ma say the expo pitch it'll be an official scores judgment they might say that Ramos pilot Atlanta's closer but they will you will make a judgement but it is based on who was closest to the ball yeah hey suit folks the strike 1 and 1 watch the bunt by Melbourne again a little different angles see if you can watch the ball and it is in fact gullickson who was credited with the put out on the play the run by the way against Christensen in the last inning the export run which tied the score is unearned as a result of the error in left field by Gary Matthews see Gullickson now is we've tried what 18 of the last 22 walk to Matthews and it's tabled by Schmidt three back to Madison throws in the first inning Diaz single for two RBI [Music] crowd is announced at just over 25,000 on an overcast day at Olympic Stadium in Montreal at second base little has it for the second out swap my drive [Applause] [Music] she's got all this out of his hands gimme those three different kinds of fastball a cut fastball one that one's in and then he sinks one he makes to come then he can change speeds on that we've got pork bones we haven't seen too much on earth first in 82 1 he's gone more to be just a politician mostly fastball he's laid off that changeup off his slider Alexson was the second pick in the 1977 June free-agent Draft of amateur players Harold Baines was the first man taken by the white sox so while it's usually more difficult to accurately assess young baseball talent because you don't have a collegiate experience in most cases as you do in football and basketball that was one year where the first two picks were right on the money hellicksen and veins I think Paul Molitor was in that draft too in fact historian that was Bill Beck was criticized in Chicago a are not taking Molitor off the Minnesota cavity contains only because he saw Beijing a little league game at a ball 400 feet the Maryland area they just filled in a hundred plus ones last year heroes who's won a color in this series at over seven waits on deck 2 2 pitch both out so they have scored to put out a figure the closest man was the catcher Rommels the little announcement was Gullickson now they changed it back so go in the first-inning reports his strikeout of the game after six and a half we're tied at two as we prepare for another edition of the seventh-inning stretch [Music] Old Spice presenting stretch taught to you by lil spices heat whisperin and original Old Spice deodorant they both work overtime a sidewinding right-hander with a slalom fastball and hissing curve jim bunning was Rookie of the Year for the 1955 Detroit Tigers funny was Pete Royce ace for nine seasons leading the league in strikeouts price and hurling a no-hitter against the BoSox in 1958 when Bunning was dealt to the Phillies in 1964 he delighted in the senior circuit slow down strike zone running variously paced the National League in strikeouts shutouts an inning fit he finished fourth in lifetime strikeouts and is the only pitcher to win an all-star game for each league but the jewel of Bunning 17-year career was a Father's Day present to himself in 1964 when Jim crafted a perfect game against the Mets him bunny he never threw a fist of hidden wiggle Oscar it usually happens late in the day your underarm alarm goes off telling the world you need order protection that keeps going as long as you do he said if you don't fight it's true that Old Spice freshness helped stop underarm alarm 24 hours a day happen to me at a party last night you should results like Old Spice deodorant and antiperspirant helps stop underarm alarm 24 hours a day you remember facing Jim bunny don't you tell me hokey stage all out mr. love the stack his lineup against Jim Bunning and left ten hitters John Blanchard and Yogi Bear would absolutely kill Jim he he could he may be the next governor or what Kentucky is then even politics now by a while there he was trying to Larry he's trying to take Marvin Miller's place how they be watching christiane seem very very closely he was getting closer to that 100 pitch mark around 80 85 now named Johnny Blanchard brought back by the family's growing up watching baseball in New York what a pinch-hitter and part-time player he was for the Yankees and then when they traded him to Kansas City in 65 and I guess he was kind of fading a little bit they traded him to Kansas City and he sat in the clubhouse and cried Speier Ramos and little here in the eye after the seven sat there crying and Mickey Mantle came up the consultant said John he was just a reserved with us at Kansas City you'll get a chance to play and Blanche she said that's the trouble Mickey you know I can't play a guy with four consecutive home runs Fenway Park to pinch it into starting a bargain the H is late too John biotechs and swinging fouls it off 1 & 1 the bottoms of both these padding orders are exceptionally weak and we may be getting near the stage where we'll see some pinch hitters I'll be interesting to see if Morgan for that slight hamstring pull if needed can pinch it at least draw based on vault you have done so well this season Carter is on his probation both clubs have good professional pinch hitters Gregg gross Jim Wohlford people like that Bobby Mullen Darryl would be bad for the Phillies get hired by spire that's very the Christmas party a tea break plausible and he got tattooed on the Corphish let's see now cookies hat Klaus doesn't get his both men gone they were up all of the last inning Babli anticipating to his right when he saw the breaking ball side but he still couldn't get up high enough now let us see if the punch is in order with Ramos up Schmidt is looking for it the only time the Ramos gonna call up the buck sometimes it looks like the ideal situation to do it but if the guy can bunk the manager could be strapped got to be booked and instance I'm a first strike if to self in a hole if it comes empty we just haven't seen much action especially with Christian said he's got that pretty good fastball still got it up to the strike zone a tough pitch to bunt you pop it up or bump tutors Ramos has been now they may put a switch on brien little who is an excellent runner is the on-deck hitter probably the man they prefer in this spot trying to get the sacrifice down ball one interesting pitch to a breaking ball there's Billy DeMars flashing the season sign inspired first and Ramos to hit her eye the former Phillies third-base coach batting instructor the last pitch is a breaking ball which is a pitch he would normally fake it easier to bond add the dollar would actually get on top of it more but he's still looking for the gun flap hey Julie did Nana strong the distance ain't hitting that way I wanted to [Music] find yourself strapping Ramos cannolis demeyers again if he had funded Vance the runner they may have pinch-hit for Lily you don't know and you may lose a battle Carter's so we walk them toward manners have to think ahead no situation I doubt that he'd be bunting now with them strikes he hits it on the ground he's the kind of guy without much speed that you can double takes it inside to include two men off to the Phillies bullpen is demeyers flashing another series aside well you started on 2 & 2 Burton says he's going to be more aggressive this year Ramos and cars not having played much could be a strikeout in a trough candidate know it yep nope wants to go called third strike on Ramos the second time that he's fans and he hears about it from the expo fans Christenson that's his third strikeout one thing that is important here looking ahead we speculated about what a spire would be going to get through the picture spot in this in it I have little headed in a double boiler have a guy falling out stealing because even if you don't score then you'll have range the man you want leading off the eighth and the order has worked out so that reigns has been the leadoff man in an inning every time he's hit today all three times when he preached face all three times [Music] he runs four hits and an error and a costly one it was for the Phillies it allowed an unearned run in the sixth as Matthew's juggle the ball in left field he runs four hits no errors for the Expos runner going fouled away [Music] it's tough to beat up a little hips you know what I've heard basement police station is really clear the last time keeping so close them the out theaters playing so shall Matthews and left Maddux's center swing over to the left field foul line not many of those line rising or fall in front you can learn the pull the ball just a little bit take advantage of that right side himself a little bit better headed this is outside 2 and 1 or even develop the strength to drive the ball not necessarily to hit it so far but to hit the ball hard so that those liners will get into the gaps and force those out clearly to play a good people rally run him on ran him on one ball no strike another good pitch too long you took the mic he going again he had version the time spyer's leads have not been as bold as those favored by reigns for example not taking a face Keeler's lead just making sure he pitches here in the hit and run out not going thousand away to the left side two balls two strikes one out on a man on we're in the bottom half of the seventh and tied at two another good pitching matchup in this series last night Lee and Denny and today Gullickson and Christensen oddly enough what would be the premier pairing has been bypassed in this three-game set neither Carlton nor Rogers will pitch tomorrow it'll be Ruthven against Sanderson the lefty was at initially pencil in but it would have been the third time this year he pitched with only three days rest in his last two outings he's thrown a lot of pitches 150 just over that she consecutive ball game even he needs some rest T 2 pitch struck him out it was held by Diaz me found him fourth strikeout for Christensen Christensen has terrific confidence in his slider and watch how hard he throws it how much of break this pitch comes close to hitting by little it just drops off the table totally moving laterally but up and down also it's Keith I see odd keeping the ball hitting the ground he reached out and Gandhi Daleks and bats for himself with two out of a man at first we mentioned lefty Carlton with Nolan Ryan on the disabled list now Carleton soon will not only pass Walter Johnson's total which for about 50 years with the record but it's entirely possible he'll scoop right pass Nolan Ryan in a month or so on the all-time strikeout list [Music] good breaking ball for strike about pitching pairings and an interesting one last night at Shea Stadium in New York Soto for the reds and a resurgent Tom Seaver for the Mets Seaver pitched well again as did Soto neither was involved in the decision and that's one on extra innings weak swing on this one and the major-league debut of young Darryl Strawberry who many people have already hung the tag on superstar unlimited potential picture the face did it out Morales for some reason is coming out once to talk to Dutch Rennert not sure what if they're going to have a conference right now he maybe wanted to request to see if this the trip out or not to see if something is wrong with distances I didn't see any and he reflux actually might have hurt his leg or is alb or anything promise what the Dutch Rennert first can see hey is it a trip resident teacher taught about 90 to 100 pitches we told you early the ballgame talking to Pato see when he gets 200 they really start watching closely the next one he throws will be number 100 after the way he wipes out Ramos and little would look like he was very good it you mentioned Darryl Strawberry those who might be following the progress of that young man some say destined for superstardom his big league debut he went over for but he did steal a base three strikeouts in the inning for Kristensen he had struck out only two prior to distance but he sits down Ramos little and Gullickson after single by expires seven complete I appear with Montreal [Music] we're not on route 35 Jackrabbit rope [Music] we're not in that Pennsylvania West Virginia West we got some great little simple design and löwenbräu on tapping let's go but you want the taste of a truly great beer tonight let it be more like you really lucked out this time overall some people buy an IBM personal computer to manage their finances but after spending thirty hundred fifty five dollars what financials are left a manager others think one of those tiny computers will do fine for storing a few phone numbers and recipes for Nesselrode by there's a choice between spending too much or getting too little computer the Commodore 64 gives you as much memory as the IBM at less than half the cost Commodore computers in more homes than any other home computer I'm Rick Fowler State Farm agent Orlando Florida speaking for the thousands of State Farm agents around the country with state farms home your home ask a State Farm agent about the home alert discount heroes will leave off the April abilities at an open three days rose in his twenty first major-league season we asked Pete Rose the crusties that has offered this year Bob will the age affect this building caught fire well Tony I think if you play this game of baseball the way it's supposed to play I don't care if you're 20 years old 30 years old or 40 years old when September comes are going to be tired and hopefully we will be right in middle of a division of racing you only have time and think about the fatigue factor well being higher than young and tired at all or two different setting I think tired young players can produce and reach back a little bit more in September the reserve I don't look old-timers haven't but we'll find out September Rose was to 71 mark last year was his lowest since he gets to 69 in his second big league season 1964 they are right on the lines at third and first Wallach and Oliver are about a foot away to stop the double this guy has hit some doubles in his career more than 700 of them his fourth on the all-time doubles list for speaker this shy of 800 his top stan musial second than ty Cobb those can probably pass Cobb this year he has his usual doubles output norden's always been an outstanding fastball hitter of course she'll guess in situations too but some the right-hander is dick dropping food left hand and very well a little relief over here for Bill Virdon Randy lurch if some took fastball pitchers to throw the ball by Rosana wings on the 3-1 and it's a tough chance for rain but he runs it down the track it was a tough tough task for shallow as you would placate run a long way that's the one thing I think is sick I feel burdened about the defensive rage that I told him he was going to be this good so I'm making catch about two weeks ago left-center field playing very shallow furrows he goes back on the warning track Rose is now hitless Tony in his last 11 at-bats and the Ty Cobb record remains 300 hits away we just where he wanted didn't he his home park it's so much easier if that warning track how many more strides we've got to go Matthews he's 1 for 2 with a walk today when L pitch al back one and one collection off to a two and three start this year with an ER a of 4.41 but what a group he's been in since the first inning today pays up on a little numbers tough play for Ramos [Applause] [Music] baramos look good bouncing out on top of that one coming there many who use this as an indicator my other thing is how it's going to catch your head and of course we were very few better than the bench or Carter or Yogi Berra that's popping out of the bunch of thunders hot dog and with a guy like garlic senator that policy charge first base it's important to have a guy who go out and get it that way Mike Schmidt singled twice and struck out at 7:00 holders for the year hit perhaps the single biggest homer of his career a pennant clenching blast a couple of years ago 1980 late season final weekend of the year up here in Montreal tonight all you fans we know it's Derby day down at Churchill Downs Kentucky but there's plenty of time before the start of that race so healthy and stay with us from his cutie ballgame Christiansen against Ellickson turned out to be a beauty a little bit slow starting off and gullets who struggled both pitchers have really taken charge even if we go extra innings only takes two minutes to run the Derby take a look at those two minutes just hope nobody hits a game-winning homer here then come right on back 1-1 pitch in the air to left field but he got under it range comes in and takes [Applause] it'll be the top of the order for Montreal with drains Cromartie is awesome when we Americans will play amateur baseball this year from sandlots to colleges each will enjoy an experience shared by generations of Americans to honor these 19 million amateur players there are parents and coaches and the organizers of amateur baseball the United States Congress is dedicated May as national amateur baseball month professional baseball joins in this flute and urges all of you to support amateur baseball the preceding message was furnished by major league baseball now for the majors this afternoon in Detroit the Tigers have taken a 5-4 lead over the Angels Luis Sanchez fan chant as the Angels pitcher gives up this single to glenn wilson scoring Larry Herndon so now the Tigers are on top of the Angels 5 4 bottom of 7 and here were in the last half of the eighth top of the order rain to lead it off and he takes a strike he's walked twice hasn't stolen base and also has a single in the sixth inning and he scored the tying run he singled Cromartie followed with a hit reigns went to third when Matthews juggle the ball scored on a sacrifice fly by Dawson man like Montreal over the last 20 slip and Perez at 3rd and first right on the line and they're also in tight range types got the bunt down well the point is screams coming probably not as good at the ship baby but in systole relative in yell he was never asked about that much in the minor leagues driving the ball pretty well Billy DeMars has worked with him on that also and if you mentioned earlier it's often tough to the ball down an artificial surface but the ball gets the in theaters much more quickly thou's the 1 1 pitch down the left side the Haitians racing over with him in not enough room you have to give credit Tony picking up on what we were talking about before to the clubs that wisely tailor their team for their strategy to take advantage of their surroundings we've got a creditor Whitey Herzog first in Kansas City last year with the world champion Cardinals for taking advantage of an astroturf field and it does present some interesting strategy but what it takes away from the classic skills of the game the distorted premium it places on some skills and the way it reduces others and what it looks like compared to a real ballpark just is not worth it to me that the negatives just out weigh the pluses to more pictures up once again for Pat Corrales in the bullpen so at his Sid mangia he was up earlier the left-hander and I'll come around no Porfirio right-handed so as soon as you got near that 100 mark he started watching it he better hurry to first face Kristen Sun Perez takes it himself on his roll over and be trained he had to the guy who listened to her got there in time raising about rudder okay camping experience Tony looks up on the corner of his eye he's Larry cooking Sun decide to think of himself and still bang bang playing first you know the term does make the game a little bit quicker there's no doubt about it the added cost of courses they rarely get games right now because then bully up sucker for water no way they could have played game six to the World Series last year in st. Louis had that been a natural surface fear with all the rain breaking ball for a strike to promoting Dutch Rennert spice does not weaken an old plate they say you can't have a big ego and be an umpire but that like Renard has managed to accommodate his needs for attention you're not going to overlook him when you come to the ballpark if he's still at these tired Pistons and he is still over par that last pitch just turned Bernardi and not lit right by he's ahead of Cromartie 1 & 2 cv adding and subtracting an epic change that paralysis purpose it is catching as you give the other side and in the number of white box in tradition to the side Mississippi shaking his head wiping quite so leave an alder subtracted it changed the side and dissolve a sex-change opposite side the other four little screwball nachos Pat clouds after that base it doesn't like this ballgame is the scary house down before Merry Christmas had a chance to walk Corrales out of it he made the side of the bullpen before Palma [Music] I was saying so look I finished up the seventh by Fanning three guys in a row rains open Tiffany with a weak bouncer and Cromarty gets a hit on a good pitch but he had to reach for he just flipped it out there nobody should be hard has thrown 109 pitches and as we noted earlier usually pony they limit him to a hundred so new pics are coming in and we're coming back in a minute would you let for me picking up and rich enough to restrain a Russian roller coaster no so we improve Foley made it even thicker and richer now is improve for me big enough and Richard [Music] but if you thought your phone he gave you clean clothes just weightlessly how much thicker and richer for me is now Gillette holy cream we made in Spain and Richard so one daughter in college and one get married the last thing I need right now is to buy a new car so every now and then I take the little dots down to - over the years I've been tomayto struts brakes a muffler I've always gotten a good deal or I'll treat myself to a new car one day right now I've got other things I'd rather spend money on [Music] you when it comes to three wheelers the choice is simple whether you make her work Oh Megan foreplay just pick the Honda leader don't miss a very special baseball doubleheader my White Sox on the Yankees or the Expos battle the world champion Cardinals then Seattle's West Coast what were the AIDS or of a Dodgers of the Padres only on NBC Sports or feet I'll come you down low from Nicaragua release the stats say I CRA go strikes me a very unusual spot al they're damned often who rolls at the shorts the Hastings underhand flick got him for the second out but Cromartie advances into scoring position hey Sookie to add the Accorsi fairly situation Colorado looks at a lighter with this bosses it's interesting when you heart back to what Bob says who pregame opening that overly aggressive knock sometimes we go to overanxious that needed it right there where that's a bad kitchen on his fifth they're going to put al Oliver on and take their chances with Tim Wallick even a lot longer earlier this game however is the guy who is expose teammates have taken to calling mr. Paul because of all the talking he does about his chances for making it to Cooperstown we were talking before the game with Petros Toni about all the either certain future hall-of-famers or possible future hall-of-famers in the ballpark youngsters like Tim Raines relative youngster like Gary Carter Andre Dawson they have a chance to become Hall of Fame players Oliver Perez will certainly draw on a Fame support and quite possibly will make it Morgan should make it MIT is probably on his way to a Hall of Fame career right in the broadcasting for the expose duke snider in the hall of fame Richie Ashburn here broadcasting for the cooling have some pretty good credentials with the Veterans Committee someday we'll have to consider putting him in after homering in the second Wallach has popped you've got the time we got the beer [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the best beer for the best time of the day Miller High Life what makes fourth annual financing rate different quality Ford quality in fact last year for achieve the highest quality rating of any major US car or truck manufacturer so now you can get a low nine point nine percent financing or $300 cash direct from Ford on escort and exp nine point nine percent financing on Ranger but he is the real difference ford quality have you driven a Ford lately Sunday Sidney Williams Rodney Dangerfield Dustin Hoffman at convolution in the stupendous the colossal the all-new TV's greatest cover till Sunday Tony Perez leading it off against galaxies Ernie spend his time playing winter ball did not give any of fats last year's ad eh up in Boston we asked him about the age and why he's so let hot I went this winter I went to play winter ball and I played first base and I got a go winner and then why can't to spin I got my stroke down and I being he didn't be bowl world since you know Bobby's always you can picture something in this game and the one thing I always pictured him is when he got that slow curveball from Billy in Boston the World Series and he Hill out that Street over the screen visual images that you can't forget about certain people score was pre nothing at that time and then that cut it to three two if I recall it correctly and launched the Reds on a comeback I can see Tony's eyes getting bigger and bigger that little semi beaker pitch curve from Billy kept came closer to him 1 1 pitch from gullickson is fouled away the expo situation is interesting gullickson has thrown 123 pitches as of this moment little misleading because he threw 38 of them in the first inning and he's been in a groove since then but when Bill Virdon thinks about going to his bullpen he has to realize that his ace Jeff Reardon is not available out for at least three or four more days with a back injury he didn't have him last night and Brynn Smith lost the game in the ninth inning when Perez took him deep for the game-winning homers Gullickson plays Perez out is now retired now he had 11 consecutive 822 of the last 24 is that right 23 of the last 25 the hitter is both Diaz we provided Pat Corrales with some unexpected offense from the catching position last year at 18 homers more than 80 RBI is the most productive season for Philly catcher since Stan lo cada back in 1956 and he has both Philly RBIs today a two-run single in the first inning top of the ninth one out nobody on tied 2-2 they will know the count this ball game started that looked like galaxies would get through the first inning the value of a pitching coach when they're teaching coaches they have to be in this phase of young pitchers are telling sir Dawson lokasenna and Payton you click out [Music] [Applause] well Galen Cisco got another talented arm to work with this week when the expose required acquired Chris Welch from the Padres interesting story Welch disobeyed Nick Williams orders to stop trying pickoff plays it's sent to the pitching coach out to the mound norm sherry went out there his that he stopped this and there is Welch number 26 warming up in the Expo bullpen and well supplied to Sherry when I'm on the mound I'm the king of the hill hello sherry took this particular message back to the dugout to dick williams and before welsh could get back to the dugout at the end of the inning williams had sent someone into the clubhouse to remove Welsh's name from the top of his locker two days later he's been sent to Las Vegas their minor league affiliate and within a week you've been sold to the Expos you know Welsh didn't know that dick Williams at a trick play that he wanted to move a runners on first and third pick one that accepted hard play and I could look at the other end same [Music] - spire will be the leadoff man followed by Ramos and Whittle unless they decide to pinch-hit [Music] when his client told him give me that package overnight or else I told him use Express Mail next day service from the post office it's a fact he says overnight I said reliable he said they deliver over 70 thousand packages on time every day I said are the two pound packages 935 about half what most every time yes did your client he said he got it and you are brilliant what would you do without me Express Mail service we make you look good for less I don't care how much I sweat it's part of the game oh crap but off the field I want to feel nice and dry and I want to smell nice that's why I use speed stick super dry intemperate speed sticks the wide stick gives me effective protection in just a few strokes helps fight wetness and odor all day get the wide stick for protection speed stick super dry antiperspirant by menon out here survival against the elephants is what it's all about and when it comes to surviving against rust that's what Krylon rust magic is all about on metal surfaces like this drooling tests against fog and acid rain proved even the leading national brand can't beat Krylon rust magic protection and rust magic dries hours faster Krylon rust magic portal top fast drying rust protection they told us it was UPS birthday today he's trying to get something going in the ninth inning for the Expos we have a little altercation with Willie Hernandez are the Cubs last year spire leads it often takes inside from Arthur Morano he was taunting Hernandez the mascot was after Lilly was knocked out of a game and Hernandez took his glove and threw it at you P we've got to the glove the glove wound up in the stands and the fan wouldn't give it back to Hernandez Melbourne at second base kind of a tough hop and handcuffed him a little but he retires fire potentially this fall caught Mike Beluga feta with Milbourne at second base than Joe Morgan that's not an active Jones if the age is caught up with a little bit offensive is no comparable a joke at Sunday's it it just flies to score the other Canadian team China Blue Jays in Kansas City again today so they have now gone to Kirkland 11 losses and they're sneaking up in Baltimore Boston yes it is early Bobby Cox for those young pitchers as the speed and Leal and Clancy and got and Eli became a pacifist all and then was taken deathly ill for a couple of years on his deathbed came back and about eight innings cookie that he wins no losses and once a pig out his alkmaar honor [Music] speaking of who's run out of those Burton has slack well besides Carter he'd prefer not to use Carter but he could run for Ramos and send in black light [Music] now would you go with the sacrifice here even though there's one out and take one shot at it with a pinch-hitter no I'm going to swing away he might find on his own Schmidt us up very close in front of the bag in case little tried to get on that way but maybe he does [Applause] [Music] the sort of first funny kizomba was trying too bad but he hello [Music] by a little step bub space gentleness season and how difficult is it you could see the mouth EOS galley to Schmidt almost just to say no chance for a play Smith didn't throw to first he said he wheeled and tried to catch Ramos hoping the Ramos would round the bag too far at second which wasn't the case now Burton still will stick with Ramos who is not a fast runner at second and he'll send up Terry Francona as the pinch-hitter forgotten [Applause] baserunners thereafter on one hit and a walk he hadn't allowed a baserunner of any time since he walked Matthews in the fifth and had not allowed a base hit since a single by Schmidt in the third so what a day for Bill gullickson who cannot be the loser and could be the winner if the Expos score here in the last of the night Francona heading at 200 as a pensioner he's been key for seven last year Tony he was sending 321 before he ran into the wall and tore up his knee in st.
