[Music] [Applause] NBC Sports presents the National League Division Series tonight from Olympic Stadium it's the Philadelphia Phillies and the Montreal Expos the National eight division series is brought to you by löwenbräu when you want the taste of a truly great beer there's really only one tonight let it be löwenbräu by Ford and your Ford dealer who invite you to test drive the 1982 Ford cars and trucks by prowl the shampoo that fries your hair to be beautifully full and thick and by Hertz the car rental company that's number one for everyone [Music] cold and wet in Montreal Olympic Stadium no batting practice because of the rain but it's dry at the moment game to the Phillies the defending World Series champions against the Montreal Expos hello everyone Dick Enberg along with Tsai Young Award winner three times Tom Seaver at the start of the series they all said Steve Carlton had to win for the Phills in Game one Montreal beat him well Phil enough you sort of certainly wanted to get a win out of the big guy Steve Carlton basically made a lot of bad pitches he was hot pitch by Steve Rogers before this series started Philadelphia Owen five in his ballpark now - Owen six in this ballpark but they want to win they've got to keep Gullickson who's only seven and nine but his numbers indicate that he had a better year than that Kovac said white only seven but his er a was 10th best in the nation [Applause] [Music] the preceding message was furnished by major league baseball sour sets ago the first standing in Lonnie Smith will lead it off for the Philadelphia Phillies and the temperature is dropping they expected maybe in the low 40s before this game is through bill Gullickson just 22 years of age 7 and 9 on the year 2.81 e ra facing Smith throws and McBride in the Philly first inning Smith in a 24 game hitting streak there's the defensive alignment for the expose the battery of Gullickson and Carter Parrish spire manual and Cromarty around the horn Terry Francona Andre Dawson and Jerry white left to right in the outfield an account quickly two strikes on Smith one and two and around the league tom seaver when they talk about this 22 year old from Kankakee Illinois gullickson they say he maybe had the best young arm in the National League well if you listen to the Philadelphia coaches and Jim Fanning they talk about gullickson to being one of the future superstars in this game just 22 years old 6-3 210 pounds a big man very mature for the just a couple of years of experience and professional baseball he look at his numbers right there 157 innings pitch and only 142 hits tied up Smith with the inside fastball as Gullickson strikes the leadoff man nothing really fancy from Gullickson fastball curveball slider changeup and that's a fastball up and in he got ahead of Smith oh and two and finishes good high and tight fastball and you'll now face a man mighty tough to strike Pete Rose who led the major leagues in base hits this year guards past and mutual the old-time national league hit leader at a couple basics yesterday and drives this one foul down the left-field line crowd a bit larger than the 34,000 I saw yesterday's Montreal 3-1 win we'd expect about 40,000 tonight the Expos trying to repeat the pattern the A's the Yankees and the Astros jump out to 2 game to none lead and that's best three out of five Spira the shortstop [Music] better an infielder aspirer Montreal defense stream ly well yesterday they've taken their knocks during the season the local press has gotten on them about shoddy play at times but they played a superb game at defense yesterday another example is fire on a routine plan a ground ball to short bake McBride who was moved from the fifth spot in the batting order up to number three yesterday in the very first inning with Matthews on third with a two-out triple they pitched around Schmidt to get to McBride so now they put McBride in front of it getting Matthews in that fifth spot hoping Schmidt will get better pitches to work with ride over for yesterday and he's old for the last 20 so he's hungry for a basehead two balls and a strike the scores of other games you talk about pitching being important in the playoffs look at the runs for the losers the Dodgers only got one run in two games at Houston only one run for the Phillies yesterday in losing and of course the Brewers were shut out today after scoring three in last night's games and in the other American League series look at the A's two runs in one run in their loss last night and were shut out in the first game so in the other seven playoff game the losing team has scored a total of only six run play they focus is on the right side the losing team shut out three times one run on three other defeats I've got to tell you something fold count bake McBride left side they said McBride breaks out of that Oprah 20 slump and here comes Mike Smith gullickson got ahead of first two hitters that came up for the Phillies and here he runs a count to three and 2 then bacon just about to sit on the fastball that situation obviously was Schmitt coming up behind hitting Eddie next she certainly don't want to walk a guy like bacon fried and give certain he gets a hit or an advantage he can pick his pitch sit on the fastball and bake just laid the bat out in a single Mike had a tough day yesterday Rogers pitched around him in the first inning at Matthews at third base with two outs Rogers no way go to first base I'll look at your right over there and picked his out men and bake McBride they did hit the ball hard twice four outs and one that you saw in our pregame set to pull it to third that parish staff and throw him out and that saved a run very critical time early in the third inning the major league home run and RBI leader this year Oh Marty holding on the runner McBride tonight one reason that Schmidt has become such a good hitter he's much more patient now than when he first came into the lake he is such a dangerous hitter pitchers trying to be so careful to him he hits I would just guessing I would say he hits more with a two and on three in one count than anybody in the league in the batter's box he's as far away from the plate as you can get deep and away from the plate he changed his stance a little bit last year and kind of incorporated a little bit of the George Brett style of hitting Charlie Lau style of hitting going into the ball you know is extremely strong and hit the ball out of any part of this ballpark or any ballpark understand those in the Chicago area that want to claim this young right-hander Gullickson and he did pitch at Joliet Catholic High School and had six no-hitters but the gullickson clan and it's a big family of nine say we want to flood four Kankakee so whose dog you with the Gullickson I was outnumbered two balls and a strike Mike Smith the batter top of the first inning bake McBride at first base with good speed [Music] into short [Music] and a man left World Series champions Philadelphia nothing and Montreal against dick Ruthven come Trail Expo with Warren Cromartie leading off and playing first base crow has done an outstanding job for us is taking over the leadoff position and batting for the injured Timmy rain batting in the second position will be Jerry white playing right field batting third will be Andre Dawson one of the best outfielders in the game today yours truly will bat fourth Larry parish will bat 5th and play third Terry Francona will play left field and bat sixth and Chris Speier will bat seventh and play shortstop for us Jerry Manuel play second base for the injured Rodney Scott in bat eighth and Bill gullickson one of the premier pitchers in the game today and still coming into his own bill gullickson batting ninth and pitching pitching for the Expos tonight anthem Gary Carter with a big smile with a lineup for the Expos d here's the defense for Philadelphia the Babri of Ruth Minh and Moreland Bob Boone did not catch yesterday as well Schmidt Bowa Trillo and rose on the infield Mathews and left Lonnie Smith for Gary Maddox and Center and McBride and right Cromartie 2 for 5 yesterday Ruthven did not have a good second half of the season tom seaver well you look at his numbers for the season all seas from 12 and 7 with a high AR a in a very difficult time coming back after the strike he had some back problems he tried to compensate front shoulder opening up too much he's a very analytical type of engine many times with an injury if you try to do things in pitch or hit or whatever with an injury you get into a lot of bad habits and that's what happened to dick and he did pitch very poorly in the second half in fact one for lost for Nesta this is his overall record but in the second half he was four and four with an ER a of six point seven five they'll let you hit the ball as you could see from a hit with that one bouncing up and got played up by our Frank pulley [Music] they are the measurements here at Olympic Stadium 12-foot fence 325 in the corners 375 behind the left and right fielder in 404 to straightaway center it looks to be a bigger ballpark the perspective of the hitter how to play [Music] meanwhile some of the fans watching game 2 but their love for hockey also quite in evidence this is the opening night of the National Hockey League season whether beloved Montreal Canadiens - one two - Cromartie back up the middle and Ruth handles the one-hopper one away [Music] Ruben's are good all-around athlete a pretty good hitter a good fielder gonna be effective tonight he's got to get ahead of the hitters and be able to get his breaking ball over when he's behind if he does get behind it doesn't he threw very hard when he came up to the major leagues from my rider up Fresno State as a state kid X Bulldog home in Sacramento California Jerry white switch hitting outfielder 1 for 3 yesterday one for poor graphic explained fried about once but was safe on the fielder's choice that's a Navy - how about the weather itself certainly going to be colder here than anywhere else in the playoffs and usually when you have the cold weather the scores are low and the pitchers have the ability well I would think so dick definitely in the cold weather really isn't the problem as long as the wind doesn't blow made you couldn't tell by our booth up here we've got the papers playing around in our notes flying around the wind is what really causes the problem it doesn't cause too much of a problem for a pitcher because he's active all the time it's a for guys that are standing in the outfield you know Lonnie Smith and the Carrie map he's out there especially in an extended innings but the wind is the thing along with that the cold temperatures would give you a problem I fly on the infield and prio wraps it for the second of a couple of soft outs from Cromartie and white and that brings up center fielder Andre Dawson [Music] the man [Music] two great assets and was the only man in the National League to hit more than 20 home runs and also steal more than 20 bases well if you could make a mold and pour the ingredients in all-around athlete all-around ballplayer that man at home plate for the expose number 10 is the guy you'd want to get out.get power he's got different average speed great throwing arm able to steal a base as all the scouts would say you can do it all they're really the Catholics of this sport they've got the upper body power to get the ball along and yet the speed and extremities we've got to all-around athletes on this field and I mean superb athletes and Cromarty and Mike a bit of the noise [Music] [Music] Ruthven with account two balls and a strike we're in the bottom of the first inning no score here in Montreal Olympic Stadium [Music] three balls and a strike because he misses away [Music] one thing you don't want to do is a picture get the to a no or a three in one count to a good hitter here's a test to see if Ruben may begin his breaking ball over from the fastball fastball right back into your living room talking to her surrett before the game the pitching coach from the Philadelphia Phillies that the frou Thurmond is going to be affected when he does get behind he's going to have to get the breaking ball over there's a shot at Dick's a little bit unorthodox delivery but when he does release the ball he gets into good flooring position and he went with his fastball when he got behind breaking ball it's off a second Frio with an easy play and Ruthven with an impressive first inning mm soft round outs and a pop fly the Phillies go down in order chapter 1 the end Montreal the films and the Expos no score for the Phills bring up Gary Matthews Keith Moore London Larry Bowa the believer Mayer on their way to Houston say and whether it's Philadelphia or Montreal the winces series and of course the Dodgers has something to say about what the Astros will be there although Houston off with a great start our outstanding pitching it's them the first two victories Matthews had a triple in four at-bats yesterday I like some of this drink Guerry the National League Rookie of the Year in 1972 with the Giants [Music] they play him to hit to right-center they give him a big hole in left-center field I think it might be sour I might have wanted Frank pulli behind the plate a good umpire though Alexson Matthews [Music] if down the right-field line Jerry white [Music] their territory the defense certainly was played right Gullickson pitch Timothy well are the one off-speed pitch was a change at the second pitch in the sequence he threw off the plate inside the interesting thing about dilections numbers if he looked at them 157 in he's pitching yet only 142 hits it's below and he's pitched in in those 147 and he's only 34 base on balls 115 strikeouts and his average walks per game worth under two so the gender knows the strike zone got good stuff can strike you out and does not walk a lot of people who aren't markings of a pretty good young pitcher right there Morland for baboon catching the first two games of the series and it was his bat to provided the only Philadelphia run yesterday a home run to straightaway center field [Music] - a No and Galax and falls behind three and Oh Bell said as he rose as he grew up in Chicago area dolan Ryan and Tom Seaver I think you feel good all forth we talked about his control and he loses Moreland on four straight pitches bordering on ancient let's put it that way you're right at 14 and to this year a serious contender for the Scion dolor and should Sieber win it would be an unprecedented fourth time Homer and Steve Carlton yourself is all one of three times Tandi Copa sandy koufax goodness I want to forget the left hand honey you should know that information we had a little discussion about Sandy Koufax at dinner last night dude whoa switch hitting shortstop takes the strike talking about the greatest pitchers and hitters that we'd ever seen first when you get into that game Koufax his name always jumps quickly into the conversation why not one on no score second inning way [Music] you can see the heavy coats adding clouds come in handy on a night like this two strikes on boy they play behind Moreland at first base [Music] to make your fingernail Oh chilly out there the inside fastball is there gonna sting a little bit the Olympic Stadium here modern facilities this isn't like the old days and at Ebbets Field or whatever then overhead the heaters in the dugout so when you do go ahead you're not sitting out in the raw cold it was once in that dugout when you're not on the field [Music] two strikes the count that's it - right white the second out of the inning [Music] the Jimmer pitch in a game over was so cold that it was tough to grip the ball you just didn't have the feeling in your hands now the hitter is gonna give you the indication that maybe the case of times how about in the pitcher well many times early in the season up here in Montreal or maybe even Minnesota where the northern parts when you're playing in April you're playing in weather sometimes 36 38 degrees I mean it's not much pungent and they just you try and work as fast as you can to keep born try not to stand around varlyn at first two outs three oh the hitter and but two on in the ninth inning yesterday he hit a shot to left field when the left is bad I think both dugouts thought that might be a game tying double but Francona was able to go back and snare it for the last out of the game two balls no strikes reowww another good season for Philadelphia hitting 287 on the year [Music] one of the many stars in the Phillies championship year last season three and Oso gullickson to walk Moreland on four pitches falls behind 303 and OH the pitcher rusyn not on deck there I love to stand the dugout because of the weather now he's out there three and money gets a strike at three know that number eighth place hitter for a pitcher with two outs is a very important out because if he can get this man out he goes to the third inning the pitcher leading off the very important now in strategy of pitching that number eight hitter with two out you want to get him up it certainly doesn't want to walk [Music] it's the right white gets all the opps in the inning Bill's leave their second man coming up for the expose in the bottom of the inning it'll be Carter Parrish and Fran comes off the second inning lots about facing the Philly right-hander batting against dick Ruthven I think that he's got a good variety of pitches good life fastball good breaking curveball and a good changeup most of those pitches he tries to go in and out but most of his pitches gilts keep away so that's basically the way all approach approach him tonight and I'll see probably more of an excess to break the ball he guessed right opens with a breaking ball away Carter had two home runs off Brooklyn this year [Music] another breaking ball one ball one strike yes sir good advanced planning [Music] I didn't think so despite the shortened season Carter caught over a hundred games again this year that gives him five consecutive years though he's been the busiest catcher in the big leagues behind the plate the last five seasons and he's produced with the bat and he's dead to 51 - and - he is right he's seen a lot of ah sweet stuff for breaking balls often ruined he hit four home runs off this Philly team this year [Music] outside three and two here comes the moment of truth through this three and two pitch this is the two and two pitch prior to running the count to three in - it looks down except the target as he goes to the plate it's one thing that a lot of pitching coaches oh you not to do some veteran pictures might have different opinions about Suellen he looks up fastball off a broken back to shore and boa takes care of the rest Rose one hops the throw thus far Ruth Minh has kept the expose on the infield for consecutive outs that great Johnny Valenzuela the Dodgers where he looks high as almost closes his eyes before he picked up the target and you look down before you I have in my mind where I'm gonna throw the ball and I look down and as I go to home fight I pick up the spot I'm thinking of in my mind and instead of looking at the entire strike zone when I do come out I've narrowed where I want to throw the ball down into just maybe six inch box or whatever I mean here's we look from the center-field camera as a pitcher let's say your pinky pure self is going into home plate well I might come in and try and pick up Larry parish's left elbow there that's where I want to throw up boom right there so I may pick that up as I go to home even if you're throwing a pitch like that a curveball away that's the spot you're saying on that's your your guiding point no I would pick that up staple my fastball but for the curveball and then let's say I want to throw a curveball look at more that's right knee I may pick that up boom my my head comes up and I picked that up that's really narrowing your focus narrowing focus but it's a discipline to get you to throw the ball where you want it instead of looking at the entire strike zone for me it helps me it also keep my weight forward on my don't get too far back you get me started on this business died waiting to get away from this ballgame [Music] get right the third and Schmidt for the long throw [Music] [Music] one of the great all-around athletes in the game there's no question defensive third baseman only 14 years this year but there's a most of Philly's talk about it if she's gonna make it here it's going to be honest very respected player obviously around the lake and Rose will pick that one out of the dirt nine times out of ten but not in this case one out ere perish aboard here's young Terry Francona a very familiar baseball Dame is daddy Tito Francona fifteen years of professional baseball and a standing left-handed dinner terry product at the university of arizona the 1980 college player of the year he's made a quick trip to the majors in the runway after the game last night dick I was walking back towards our trucks and I saw Tito Francona he had a bright big broad smile on his face after his sons catching the field yesterday Francona family dare to cheer on there fouled away thus far Terry Francona has shown good contacted earned his way up to the big leagues this year by hitting 352 at Memphis and then 350 at Denver but hit only one home run all year in the minor leagues is that in with a bit more power and the Expos think that Francona may do the same as he develops he's just youngster [Music] one ball two strikes Bill's early carpenter [Music] well he's thrown him a couple changeups away you said the fraternity will usually expound many hitters hid themselves they're looking for that ball can't get away from a pitch that really isn't that far inside three and two we'll see if parish is going with one yes [Music] and without the aid of a basehead montreal threatens in the bottom of the second inning [Music] the many college players on this Montreal team he played at the University of California Santa Barbara but now makes his home year-round here in Montreal [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] make with Bryden right-field does not have a throwing arm this fire simply punched that ball in the hole between second and first the throw is offline and he could handle it everybody's safe all the way around friendzone at second savant of the third fire at second base there is a center field shot but pride let the ball go just seemed to Taylor tail up toward the mound certainly a good throw had an excellent chance of getting perished it's one-nothing Montreal runners at second and third so the Philly infield will come in sight Jerry Manuel over for yesterday he's playing for the injured Rodney Scott [Music] mangle not known for acquired from the Tigers a couple of years ago for Duffy Dyer [Music] cRIO sometimes those little bloopers with the infield in can be disastrous but it was high enough for trio to collect it for the second out manual unable to get a run home on and out and Kona still at third we're all manager in September kelex enough they want to say hello to next get through the expose say left graciously good job Aaron said I wish nothing but the best for banning and for this all Club friends and family watching down in Tampa Florida tonight galex in had seven hits this year and one RBI one swing he could really help himself in this book Ruthven sawed off the opposing pitcher and gets out of it with one [Music] one what any Montreal [Music] from your vocals into the game people just keep warm [Laughter] one-nothing Montreal little heat set up by Gullickson to the opposing pitcher dick dick ruthless who hit 140 on the year seven hits in 50 events [Music] garlic's and knocks it down brings up the leadoff man Lonnie Smith to get an example of good reflexes by young kid I talked him before the game you talking about a mature 22-year old I said what's your outfit this is Rob depend on what kind of hitter I just spent like a 32 year-old pitcher not a 22 year old but he moved like a 22 year old there to accede over to first base and they say it's not just baseball where he reflects that maturation that and all social and emotional aspects that he really handles him so like a man 10 years beyond this age Smith the left centerfield Dawson [Music] Dawson as the second out of this third inning two pitches two outs he pros grounded to short his first time up we talked about roofing dropping his head in his delivery rinna watched Gullickson now he works the way most of us were taught and that is you get your sign you pick up the target you go into the wine if you keep your eyes riveted on that target and throw it I think most pitchers I mean most pitching coaches will teach their young pitchers to keep their eye on that target all the time pitching is such a collection of little things what's good for one may not be good for another firstly I find when I cried hit back you can see Pete Rose's stats for a year he had they find it when I watched the sign all the way watch the target all the way wait it's too far back just they hit my head going back it's my wait too far back behind my right leg where I keep my head down it keeps my weight right on top of my right legs it's very uh it's a very fine line for some pitchers it will work for other fishes it won't work he has fine mechanics he gets into fine throwing position he had plenty on that fastball of the road to take a look at the ball early this year down in Clearwater and spring training is the name some of the young pitchers that you really liked last year and he came up with Gullickson name first two hopper to man [Music] to free the abilities go and after two and a half in Montreal the expose later one to nothing go off the Montreal third hang the fun-loving effervescent first baseman we asked him if he ever gets nervous yeah first time I've been nervous is when I when I left school but I wasn't supposed to my mother came and got me and then later on my father came and got me but you know nothing compared with this the whole different atmosphere and totally plays a real good basement you don't forget when mom and dad come happy you bet you're nervous prior to the Miami connection from Artie and Dustin bounced back to the mound in the first inning Ruthven who changes speeds so well a little off that one drops it in first right he's really enjoyed that leadoff spot since Tim Raines broke his hand in Chicago in mid-september [Music] that went over a little bit one-on-one those are the kind of pictures that are gonna make dick Ruthven effective that breaking ball so Marty a fastball hitter try and hit the ball up in the alley in left field he likes to go to the opposite field yesterday his single and is doubled both to left field over six friends earned runs a game against Montreal this season hold that one too right [Music] [Music] dick made a mistake on this pitch it looks like either a changeup or Marty does like to go to left field that ball but he got it right his eyes he threw us right up in the alley for a to bases [Music] it's that wet carpet really scoots you can see some of the puddles on the warning path well very active active off those walls out there Tuesday and you mentioned the the curve in the corners it's like a hockey rink sharply to second Cromartie advances the third on the ground one out runner at third [Music] baseball riders here in Montreal as the Expo Player of the Year is 27 and those are mighty impressive numbers 302 24 home runs 26 stolen bases yesterday's game that expose had a number of chances to score a lot more runs off of Carlton Dalton got his outs when he needed to didn't pitch the kind of Steve Carlton game that we would expect from him but Montreal has done their job here now from Hardy gets a second get him over to third less than two outs and you got your big guy up at the plate one out in field and plays him [Music] expos scored in the second inning arias safe on Schmidt's air a walk to Francona and Chris Speier single to right Neal swing foul 1 & 2 the count two dozen they won a Golden Glove and a silver bath last year the pretty good quinella feeling and getting as we talked earlier great bass speed [Music] 1 & 2 popped him up foul territory Smith the expose again will not score run on and out runners at second and third and one out in the second but Manuel 511 [Music] Gary Carter grounded to short his first trip some talk to Carter who will play out his option next season wanted to move to the west coast make just be some bargaining barter bambor Johnny Bench of the 80s in the eyes of these Montreal fans favor in just now and I'm sure would hate to see him go if he decides get deep the Latvia [Applause] Andre Dawson to Papa they went for no strikes and that looks like a changeup to me dick very upset that's a bad mistake different hitter like Gary Carter a pitch like that big hit by the export catches leading up the exposure the all-star game [Music] the Americans it's his first playoff run with two out and Cromarty 1/3 3 nothing Expo 501 [Music] Parrish who struggled most of the year at a fine September and was Player of the Year the final month will be here across the rows inning is over [Music] we're the left-field wall no one left 3-nothing Montreal Stadium and sandy Carter Gary's lovely wife as happy as any of them after her husband cleared the wall a 2-run home on and it's three nothing Montreal as we go to the fourth inning goal Gullickson will face McBride Schmidt and Matthews for the pill McBride Rookie of the Year in 74th National League with a st. Louis Cardinal any sense of girls that one from Gullickson Schmidt grounded to short his first event and here's Mike Schmidt's thoughts on the man he opposes now the right-hander Gullickson of the Expos well bill Gullickson to me is one of the best right-handers that I've ever faced his record wouldn't indicate that but it's no fun going into the batter's box it's a real challenge for a hitter like myself I got to lay off the high fastball and when I get a pitch to hit I got to do something with it because he's a tough pitcher he's a strikeout pitcher and then we just have to hope he makes mistakes walk some people and we can take advantage of so far no mistakes this matter anyone else is going soon finding that fastball with a crisp breaking boy calls it a swerve - cider have curved [Music] [Music] you know dick the more you watch that guy he just reminds me so much of Willie Mays being able to cover so much of the outfield great speed great power he's gonna develop into the if not already the best player in the league I think many people around baseball people would say it's a concept between Andre Dawson and Mike [Music] that is the fact that he's playing here in Montreal and a lot of the American fans don't hear the full details of his talent know about great Matthews who had a solid season his first year in Philadelphia hitting over 300 [Music] many of the leek categories [Music] [Music] collections got the ability to get his fastball over breaking ball over that's the appeal player right there as wall upstairs in the count is 3 & 2 two outs in the fourth the bills are down three nothing and down one game to none right for a basehead as he went the opposite way so Matthews has the second Philadelphia here and it brings up cancer Keith Moreland [Music] Philadelphia's got to hit stick both of them on three and two counts the Gullickson they're three and two looked like he went to a breaking a ball Matthews was fooled at the ball in the hole on the other side but interesting the fact that two is that they do have both of them on three and two counties Morland walk his first time up with a baseball and football star at the University of Texas he's Moreland you just mentioned Longhorns and he'll give you a 15-minute dissertation on Earl Campbell his team 80 distinct he's the most awesome athlete he has ever encountered Moreland was a defensive back he had to work against Campbell in practice [Music] perish waiting for it to come down [Music] got it all straight up it leaves our third man middle of the fourth the expose night free the stars in that motion picture fight a Montreal fan he was here yesterday and I guess time I'm sad too many of the home came to the expo in Kona bad hop but Rose handles it and gets him at first Ruthven covering three one brings up Chris Claire who's that quite a series yesterday an RBI double then walked the next three times up in his first time tonight singles the right to drive in a run there's his thoughts about the playoffs it's only been a decade since my last one and hopefully we can make out a little bit better than I did on my first try first that was with the San Francisco Giants back in 1971 ten years ago salad player and again the blend of age and youth on this Montreal T and the young kids looking as far as saying he's just so solid nothing seems to upset it you talking about experience the Montreal people coaches and his buyers the settling force in the NDP Lee doesn't have arranged a lot of shortstops might have but he makes the plays that he gets to have the steady price every ball that he gets he's got a chance to find accurate assistant double ply as well as anybody could turn a double fly he's made his adjustment through the years dating to 25 this year came up he had some power I think one year at 1415 home runs with the Giants he had only two home runs this year so he's just gone up on the bat trying to make contact and has done that so far against the bills [Music] Schmidt and there's two away the crowd here is certainly different from any other major league Park that I've been in that when I come up here definitely they seem to get balls into periods of silence maybe it's just a international type of crowd but they get lulled into into pairs of silence silence in the Philadelphia bullpen Warren Brewster but they'll get up real high and we get very active and the alley on then they'll come back [Music] something always happened always that Rumble in here and opera at the theater they feel very quiet and wait for the exciting event to happen when it does happen but didn't really get involved like you say the American crowds all over the United States and the ballparks oh is that din that's buzz that's all is going through the stadium no matter where you are [Music] ngo lays off the breaking ball and it's two and one almost the way the crowd reacts it's like a hockey rush from end to end they build in their spirit more with a goal discord it's pandemonium and then those if someone waves a baton everyone relaxes suspect back down wait for the next sports crescendo mangle Pop's it up might be a play for Moreland back in the second row Ruthven will hit third in the next inning for the pills Brewster warming up part of that maybe thoughts of using a pinch-hitter two outs in the fourth Ruthven and the phils trail montreal 3 nothing so far in the playoffs the horses are going wire-to-wire when you win the first one you get the second one too we're all trying to do manuals ground ball and Brooklyn settles down and gets the Expos in order all on ground balls in the Porsche and my 303 Philadelphia that's core be right back after these messages Turtles here in Olympic Stadium Montreal three runs three hits no errors and two men left for the Expos no runs two hits an error and three left for Philadelphia Gullickson will face the lower third of the Phills order Bowa Trillo and Ruthven Larry's third best average in his career 12 years with a bills at 283 this season feisty competitor one of the many athletes Sacramento California that's such a great program in that city [Music] [Music] his defense Carter behind the plate Parrish spire Newland Cromar and white and right [Music] 50 left if I were going out and falling [Music] three all shorts enough [Music] around Athiya before the game trying to get the fine up to fill it up for the Expos and branded the bill collection over there you know he's a diabetic and he takes his insulin shot about 12 o'clock on the day of a night game I ran into him I said where you going son reacts before the game they have a game a little bit more than I normally would have this packed across I can take it just another part of his life company now she talked about his maturity something out that he's dealt with very successfully very easily that's on the outside gonna win would you normally eat on the day you pitch night game 8 o'clock I'd be having a meal or about 1 or 2 o'clock and that would be in until post game now the one off the fists and manual laughs to make the play we'll get a new order of paths have been a lot of broken ones tonight get Pee Wee Reese on the phone down there have a special order he's not throwing many pitches down the middle of the plate to jam shots in this inning hitters off-balance because he can get his breaking ball over at any time good hard fastball grouse will pinch-hit for dick Ruthven so roofing works the first four innings giving up three runs two of them earned and a big blow Carter's two-run home run [Music] he gets it up there in a hurry gross last year in 240 with the phils he's always been a solid hitter 295 lifetime average in the big leagues to know Gregg was part of the Manny Trillo to Philadelphia from Chicago I also got Dave Rader the cuts in return received very poor Terry Martin fed size grossest part of Dallas brain [Music] Ruba tomorrow with a fine he always had good hands nice beer here to stand with that foul ball there's more he's gonna beat the Phillies next pitcher Rose comes up in these situations del unser the other left-handed pitchers used by Dallas grain that's are having a little bit more power ease and situations when Edythe double or an extra-base hit two balls two strikes two outs bases empty [Music] 3-nothing Montreal agent [Music] did you ever buy that theory that when you saw a banner for the first time he wore glasses he tried to beat him pitch him low never heard that not only didn't I buy its first I've ever heard of thank you back in two years the right Drysdale and asking about them to play again big right-hander with the Dodgers he used to say I think if he's had classes he can't see too well I'm gonna pitch it far away from his eyes as I can how you wonder what a hitter - 20 pounds off a pitch he thinks he should have hit probably should have punched that down the left-field line for a double two balls two strikes [Music] three and two [Music] all is guaranteed to get a boo home god although it appeared that girls did fall back [Music] full cap 5th inning Commissioner Bowie Kuhn here in Montreal for Game two [Music] and tomorrow some of the neutral the North's equipment that there Bryant Gumbel head in the pregame show and well an equip play by Manuel aggression [Music] boom by the halfway mark of his life we all income and made that plan throws it hard closing out the bidding so don't Gullickson has given up just a couple of singles through the first five innings meanwhile the Expos have gotten three runs the series and the game is all Montreal it's all Montreal and it's all chilly up here too [Music] Warren Brewster takes over for the fells 14 games in 81 Griffen pointings three hits three runs to earn three hits one walk [Music] galux n' a soft liner to short his first at-bat [Music] Felix move away from the plate those pictures are gonna wait for that thing to curve [Music] or what it was [Music] because if you ever buy that theory time-saver you take it easy on the opposing pitcher maybe wants a Jerry Koosman when I pitch against my buddy could that resolve to into you get them in three pictures you want to monitor [Music] roaster takes care of galaxy [Music] and will place your charges for Montreal Dick Enberg and Tom Seaver and we'll be back with you tomorrow from Veterans Stadium for the Dodger game three and game [Music] the Yankees are already had two games tonight [Music] basically came the teams have lost it long Oh Marty this telecast presented by authority of Major League Baseball intended solely for the private non-commercial use of our audience any publication reproduction retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions of accounts of this game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball is prohibited it's 1 & 2 doubles open that third and scored on Carter's home run in time tomorrow from Los Angeles and Montreal to Philadelphia four o'clock Eastern Time she'll be starting I wonder if they're gonna have to sign up for us tomorrow [Music] we may to do this like it those long johns you have on every day [Music] Ramar T downswing so Brewster has come in to strike at Gullickson and Cromartie [Music] really well since an emu can lead our position chirping around the bed [Music] I was smiling got a needle for somebody great sense of humor they say they just kid here for like four or five years this no design Geneva dates of course give it right back to it foul by white it's one in one who's the court jester on the Reds ballclub Evelyn we have more than one you're something next to one I know that David can set you on a new five-year shortstop yeah really be full of fun yes Father last next year I'm glad we've got him back [Music] it's three nothing Montreal in the last two the 5th inning bases empty and two out Jerry white the batter my baseball news Bobby mattis quit as the Toronto manager will move back into the front office rumors are that Bobby Cox fired with the Braves Atlanta Braves by coming tonight through the Blue Jays [Music] three in one [Music] the mesosphere working the radio broadcasted this game tonight in the case of both sometimes the Jacke can't carry the horse across the finish line and the jockey looks for a new mount [Music] [Music] first Datsun rumors are at more than rumors the Dallas Green is going to be leaving the pills oops [Music] when Hastert herb series of the infield field was covered for most of the day when it was raining they took the tarp off when they did some hitting artsy that infield it's those wet spots out there he would really scoop game looks so easy when you watch it on television or when you look my position it is an experience even when the carpet is dry to peel the ground ball for the first time off the artificial surface you can get yourself handcuffed in a hurry much less when it's scooch the way it squirted off the grass store the artificial grass that's on Andre Dawson up to out and brewster keeping an eye on white Dawson her she had a a star like he is you want a nickname they call him pop here and awesome Dawson what do you call him down [Laughter] he strikes out he hits the ball harder it's the ball out of the ballpark he got a great swing very fast inside it looks like he's going into that plate like you'd be able to pitch him inside but he is quick in there cleanly quick inside if you're gonna go inside with it where you've really got to get in there hard don't feel too sorry for those players sitting on the benches metres up above should we tell them there's heaters up above us do or not there's an example [Music] taking batting practice yesterday and earmuffs and they were inside [Music] trying to win the first two at home where they had the best record of any national league team they're going to Philadelphia the filter had the second best home record in the league there you go [Music] now Jerry lied who stole twice yesterday successfully gets himself with scoring position with two out in the fifth doesn't get a bad pitch to handle let's fall down and in good job our warm rooster easily good shot from our left-field King nice slide yeah white trying to pick up the slack Kim reigns has had an all time major league stolen base record for a rookie was 71 in Rodney Scott with 30 101 stolen bases basically out of the lineup playing [Music] so boa actually he made that play as the ball was by him into centerfield and alertly knowing he couldn't get Dawson at first base made the quick spin and caught white rounding third Dawson hits a ball right back up the middle good heads-up play by Larry Bowa the shortstop lot of experience that shortstop positioning knows he has no chance at Dawson at first turns around and picks up white going home good heads-up play and a perfect for hop throw to Moreland for the out it remains romantic Montreal [Music] as ba realizing he couldn't get Dawson took his time did not get a very strong throw as he dribbled it in but at plenty of time his wife brown a third was too far toward home could not retreat bowhead him either way no matter which way white might have wanted to go so that saves it from for nothing it bills down by 3 and they start with the leadoff man smith rose and mcbride to follow GALEX in has pitched the strong five innings one walk in two singles and there's evasive see how quick that centerfielder has to be that's just an average single on grass but on the carpet that can become a double in a hurry I was a good example of the respect of Lonnie Smith has for the arm of an Andre Dawson first pitch fastball on his fourth first ball fastball hitter up and out of the fight knee keeps it up in that gap stays at first because simply because they are that Dawson does have in centerfield that's a significant base hit by Smith because he had a 24 game hitting streak a 23 game hitting streak to end the season he hit safely yesterday again today those won't count playoff records tonight Canada Rose easy flying are left in Francona there they all time the reason we said significant in that Smith now hitting safely 23+2 that's just one shy of the all-time Philadelphia consecutive game record Chuck Klein great star the Phillies back in 1930 hit safely in 26 in a row I think he did it twice so Smith up there with some great names on this run through September and now in October mr. and mrs. Don Gullickson Dona Nancy Gullickson from kankakee or peoria yeah the night mature misunder Joliet name any other city because they all want to flame gullickson around Chicago quite a family you talk about a young man and they praised the Tom Seaver is offered as his attributes and you really praising the parents [Music] mcBride up one out one on golitsin hasn't had to work from the stretch too much today well he's been doing things correctly dick and getting ahead of his hitters getting both pitches over getting ahead of hitters getting ahead in that count is such an important aspect of pitching are we on the sixth inning he's really only been behind and not by behind I mean run to a three and two count got into three one two no has only been in that situations five times tonight in there as one and two that's the name of the game pitching low strikes ahead of the hitters good low strikes you do that you're gonna win the majority of your games you know you look at his numbers of looking at them before the game just seven and nine but you could tell by 157 innings pitching that 2.8 a 2.8 er a a much better year than 7 and 9 could be 2 [Music] [Music] we talked a little bit about the defense of Montreal yesterday the defensive play the game mystery meat by Larry Parrish their manual makes by far the best offensive play the game crews fire had no chance of McBride at first pace he is a McBride coming in but spire because Manuel had trouble getting the ball out of his glove after making that diving stuff through the timing off his fire and he had to make sure he got the one out here's Mike Smith he's grounded out and flied out talked about that being a defensive play that ball goes through Mike Schmidt comes up at one out two men on one swing of the bat you could have a tie ballgame and all of a sudden Mike Schmidt even if he does hit it out is still ahead by a run oh four five in the series consider the shortened season and Schmidt led all of the major league hitters with 31 home runs and 91 runs batted in did that job George Foster in the final week this is Cromartie Warren Cromartie's mother Marjorie - no - Schmidt well they got Gullickson in position now bill has been ahead of his hitters but what Mike Schmidt will do to a pitcher him up there he's got such awesome power and it's a devastating swing they ought to be so careful on this first couple of pitches and before you know it Mike Schmidt hit two and Oh even in a situation where he can't tie the game up that's really the first mistake that Gullickson is made running the counter to notice Schmidt he had a fine cut on that he just missed that ball - out - runner at first base McBride 3-nothing Montreal here in the sixth inning the challenge both those now what is he going to feed him to and tooth from a couple of fast balls and now he's back even well II dunno boom boom - good fastball Steven - in Tina he comes back to the driver's seat he can throw the fastball inside though the curveball but if he misses goes back to 3 into the paper I've got a swing back - shreddy in that situation three and two you feel as the hitters pitch that's an advantage to the hitter a little inside that it was closed he answered our question which way he was going to go that's a good up and in fastball that my fairly how that's his drink being able to hold up on the pitch he could do was unhittable just missed now three and two what's he gonna throw is you gonna go back in there with that fastball can't walk you can't walk him you have to go after him in a situation up five three words McBride occurs we'll be off with a pitch that's when Perris has to go the long [Music] outstanding defense they're three nothing lead ball game especially since we beat a premier pitcher and Steve Carlton and that just has given us the overall confidence to carry over in tonight's ballgame against recruitment and of course that confidence spells a three nothing late and Griffin already in the showers Sparky Lyle begins to warm up for Philadelphia roaster cars that may be a optimistic thinking on the part of Dallas Green and that the first room here's second hitting a pitching especially in this weather they going to have to give your pictures a little bit more time to get loose there's Sparky Lyle veterans left-hand reliever for the film in Boston paper the Yankees Texas out of the Bronx ooh there we go [Music] oh it handles it nicely first championship for Montreal starts alluding to a big league championship for many many years the Montreal Royals of the international league were dominant team [Music] in fact tommy lasorda he still claims he was the Warren Spahn of the International League anything ever quite got his chance in the big gene Mauch plate up here Jackie Robinson plays Montreal and a great baseball town for a long time prior to becoming a major league Larry parish safe on an errand scored a Marana inspire a single in the second and grounded to short his other time up mokona would be next wanted to you know talking about this town dicken and the ball came to have now the mean their heroes are Dawson and Carter Cromartie and the rest of them like a franchise team the expansion team they progressed the early days of rusty Staub John Baca Bella [Music] he really hacked they're quite his they're very colourful players up here early goes to that Jones member makkac Joan laughs dealer he's half Jones / don't Jerry pardon they had the fans of that field next marauders or whatever they were a lot of names that come through this franchise may have themselves a fine team now yeah they became a winner three years ago and 79 in last year losing out from the final weeks final game and this year the final Saturday clinching a playoff spot in this unusual baseball year [Music] - apparently the temperature has now dropped still comfortable 46 degrees I was wearing long johns to be comfortable [Music] he's hit to right field I have incredible all of the lights [Music] we all hit tonight Steve Arles first base coach I think McBride either lost the ball the lights or misjudge the ball you can break down how far red card [Music] second hit off rooster the increase fire RBI single in two trips there goes a runner [Music] instead got a couple people by surprise one of them Brewster the pitcher Francona does not have better than average speed but he did get a good jump at first base [Music] he had only one stolen base since being recalled from the minor leagues slide into second ila Petros head first and a legato box [Music] their chances on the lighter hitting Jerry Manuel still looking for his first playoff hit over six spires been tough [Music] and all for you saw Dallas Green in it it is a small world baseball became the manager filets their first World Series championship last year now Jim Fanning [Music] standing looking for that dream come true and two days ago John McHale wants me to go back to the front office that's exactly what I'll do I belong to the organization I said but once you get a taste of it win in the crowd the roar the crowd he's gonna listen I'm not married my life is baseball and I owe it to the Montreal Expos whatever they he was very big on saying that he is a company man vente which way he wants to go that's a shot at a scoreboard here at Olympic Stadium you can see the fringe on top English on the bottom all fries and three crates to eat rates we have trying to make it three and Wow and that's it for the Expos in the six no runs the second and two left we go to the seventh Billy's date three to tie the big leagues whatever Canadian team plays American feed both national anthem saluted animées crowd tonight 45,000 896 to see Game two of this playoff series Montreal trying to go back to Philadelphia putting the pressure on the World Series champs and Gullickson played and pitched as well as a man can he is the main man putting the pressure on that Philly offense no question about it he'll face Gary Matthews Keith Moreland and Larry Bowa in so far in these first two games the Expos hitting timely pitching outstanding and defense flawless banti is a single to right field his last time up just study bill gullickson and accenting an expert eye of tom seaver who's had a wicked breaking ball - what an optical illusion after the first pitch he gets his strike on the first pitch that's a good slider running off the plate now they're breaking ball first ball head of the hitter one ball he strikes now he's got a whole bunch of things that he can do go outside go inside galaxy last September math Nady Gullickson struck out 18 cups in a game but that's just one off the major league record good example of setting up the pitch the slider away earlier first fastball that Matthew seen and this time it bad in he's way behind it now facing capo into his walk and filed out let's say you shared the major league record and 90 names 19 strike Steve Carlton Nolan Ryan just adapt when he was chucking for the old California Angels out there did me I had a pleasure to call that one [Music] pleased as you were to help celebrate the long distance Ryan strips no-hitter you look at galaxy's brain proving that comes out of the filly both you never left hellicksen's got a great frame he's no like Ryan our plates as you have and Ryan is always credited the power in his leg 6-3 p10 to big thighs then he drives them to me he uses them yes just use them as a fulcrum he gets down and drives of that back leg impressed with his maturity that's 22 years of age it's one of the few pitches that he didn't really throw well suppose the Phillies are impressed with his fastball on his curveball right now you can see how he gets down and drives to that back leg pulls the left side down gonna have left side down it pulls the right side up and gets their arm in the throwing position well the Expos and everyone around the major leagues knew the Gullickson was a great prospect he had six no-hitters in high school and Jolie Joliet Illinois and there were a great talent at 77 draft Harold Baines was picked first and he's made it already the big leagues cherry Kennedy the Cardinals now playing with San Diego and Paul Molitor we've seen with the Brewers in the playoffs and Gullickson and the Expos had second pick and gullickson over Kennedy and mullet are another chance for parish and scooped up by Cromartie gullickson and can use his surgical job on the bill terrorists like my team is a fine defensive player Larry's got a very strong arm he really has a cannon over there third face this one a little bit low and Cromarty does a good job at digging it out but parish has a strong throwing arm as any third baseman in the league two out and boa the matter looking for his first playoff bid he's over five parish is another one of those Montreal players from Florida sportsmen down there with the Reds came in to play the Expos here he was telling me about a 24 pound bass that was knocked down and raised a few eyebrows in our dugout the alligators not that big down yes it is a good Florida connection between the expose and the deep south of the United States with three starters Cromartie Dawson and Parrish and also rains is from the Seminole state Gullickson keeping it quiet on the Philadelphia another soft chapter short Spira [Music] Alexson retires and they're standing in Montreal stretch and the extra pay is flames with that score 3 nothing marina nothing [Music] [Music] therefore bill collection [Applause] party Lyle but off your pitcher and they can these Canadians a heis are extreme [Music] 45,000 umpire Alexson easy-out they went from Cheers the booze almost on cue there didn't they on that one call Sparky Lyle the year retiring he was going to quit was unhappy reconsidered [Music] Alexson has completed three games of 22 stars so just in case veteran bill Lee starts tuning up in the x-bow pen doubled in stored and struck out expos scored in the second inning off dick Ruthven [Applause] [Music] we talked about the exceptional athletes on this field and Cromarty and the other one in Mike Schmidt look at this place when he has no spa man comes in bare hands are balanced and fires a ball down their pizzas cannot hold on to it and Froemming had called Oh Marty out and feed been able to hole out of the boys he proved to be right there another good angle look at it cold hands are not Smith with a great barehanded pickup and had to throw there in time rose for the second time tonight unable to dig to throw out they'll give him a face head tough play six Montreal hit tonight white the runs for Montreal second inning a narrow walk and an RBI single by spire Marnie the story just three singles through seven [Music] [Music] when you try and pick somebody Coffey on the fence mayor the third pitcher from the village laundry starts throwing in the philadelphia bullpen these are read yesterday's game and tug mcgraw going down there now we've seen that from the right side in the series 1 for 7 from the left side [Music] oh just in case Cromartie had wandered away easier white of course into the starting lineup since the entry to Tim Raines shame that the expose and the country denied the chance to see the exciting rains play although he is available he's on the 25-man roster and could be used as a pinch runner [Music] Montego he was pointing to an O so you got a figure that he likes it he's gonna give it a cut can't start a little action one way or the other [Music] he goes he's out of there good throw by Moreland there are white unable to make contact and from our teeth Rona Marty not known for his speeders based in an ability Orlin got a good throw off we'll tag by Manny Trillo the second baseman against their second out and a wife walks of course was not a steal it was getting run a run and yet and white is a board to a block first by Lyle and it brings up Andre Dawson here we want to send along relatedly our congratulations on so many outstanding years decades of baseball broadcasting when he came to the playoffs in the World Series so many times we heard Jack Brickhouse the voice of the Chicago Cubs for over 40 years as his retirement at the end of this a big day for him in Chicago to get her name the radio booth part of the press box after Jack Brickhouse and a good friend and the name is contributed to this job we wish him many many happy years thanks for all the great memories of work Jack Brickhouse and all the fans in Chicago remember hey hey hey home ran out a wiggly bill Dawson with a rip at a - Oh in the bullpen the left-hander McGraw the right-hander Reid Dawson 1 for 3 an infield hit white remember has stolen tonight and had two steals yesterday so he's a threat with two outs to go 3-nothing montreal and they're trying to add to their lead here in the 7th to gone Joe's plan caches to keep white clothes but it's there from Lyle and it's fouled by Dawson white saying something the first page umpire for his chroming there's Spanky right there oh strowman cents a year ahead guys guys I think they gotta send wide here going to Boston's got two strikes on him if he does get thrown out leads off the next inning they saved us give him almost to time too if he makes it he's in scoring position let me go on this time three and two to him I really suddenly showing all kinds of life beginning to celebrate as we come now to a seventh-inning Frio [Applause] hurry that throw is Dawson was sprinting 3 2 pitch it sharply up the middle that trouble getting out of his glove but he according to Bruce Froemming third-grade hands make up your mind in the running to go Montreal by three at the Montreal seventh in apparently good cause for argument by the expose [Music] bang-bang [Music] Manny Trillo made that blade leads off the Philadelphia thinning the expose in front Brina nothing and how interesting the pattern of these playoff games so far joke lynnae's have won their first two against Kansas City the same for the Yankees at Milwaukee and for the Astros at home against the Dodgers and thus far in the seven playoff games the losing team most francais scored is three and that's only on one occasion and all the rest losing team has either been shut out who scored just one run and so it is tonight through seven three to nothing there pitching prevailing which in the story tonight here dickin milk Alexson has never faced more than 4 million 180 he's making it look easy in the team of he's facing that Philadelphia Philly club is not loaded with punchy judy's and when they can put some points on that sport borders they call him here in Montreal and he says simply shut their whole offense down top scoring and hitting team in the National League got just six outs left in case Jim panting his bullpen ready his top left and right hander Fryman and Reardon [Music] the Phillies did not win in Montreal all season oh and five in the regular season lost last night or yesterday afternoon pop behind second in the shallow right center and gossip [Music] yes sir Gullickson has spread those three hits out rather nicely one in the first by McBride the other in the fourth from Matthews and the third in the sixth inning by Lonnie Smith in that inning a fine defensive play on McBride school by the second baseman Manuel snapped out the only mere threat the bills a bad [Music] you mentioned last time in Gullickson three complete games and 22 starts going into this any niet 92 pitches so far I should still be strong especially with the cool weather for in a lot of strikes it ahead of his hitters mixing up his pitches doing the kinds of things that up put your hats do to win ballgames Jorge Boca who had a base hit as a pinch-hitter in the last inning yesterday batting for Marquis Lyle galux it has certainly carried out his game plan just for familiar to beat the Phillies I have to go out and pitch my game go out there keep - don't let him sit on my fastball get my breaking ball over in a fastball situation that simple enough breaking ball over in a fastball situation Vuckovich takes a walk straight well he is pitching himself a game that he will remember for a long time if he can get four more outs here isn't he and the Phils know that after Carlton there's no question that the Expos have more strength in the starting pitching in I was even before they saw a girl except tonight there's a vase yet Lonnie Smith and has a two-out double so Smith who had two hits yesterday two more again today first extra-base hit for Philadelphia spent single last time up here fastball a few pitches that he's really thrown out over the plate Lonnie just turned it around really scoots on astroturf when it's wet Wow even Dawson you would think as good as anybody be able to cut that ball off that ball scooted right by him all the way through to the wall he'd rows were in the calor that didn't have very often he's trying to pick up the fills first run out of the short to second and flied to left never missed the game as a fill he just didn't want to sit on that bench this wasn't built for not flying off the left on a single by Rose it's three to one [Music] there won't be so many bees in the hands and that one after you get a base hit in an RBI well that's not very pretty but it puts a run on the board that's what they need and in Cisco coming out of a Montreal dugout have a talk with a young pitcher sisqó of course the pitching coach for the Montreal Expos there's that last pitch fastball inside @p just fights off and hits the left field Chris Pryor not able to make the play [Music] the Phillies are on the board life first a Cisco Golic sent it back to the dugout Yelena phone pitching coach at Kansas City and former outstanding football player at Ohio State mcBride trying to keep it alive with Schmidt and Matthews two men who can hit that ball out of the park behind him that that mcbride can't but certainly the others are more serious homerun threats they can't - home runs during the course of this year a two-out double by Smith and a single by Rose has made it 3 2 1 Montreal Gullickson with his parents looking on want to know to McBride to play still looks like he's got a good fastball dick in this situation right here Racing bake McBride grows on versatile still stinking from that last base hit this situation right here is the biggest outfit he's had the ball game so far pitcher normally has got to get five four or five or six outs in a ball game to win it and this is the big one cuz the man on deck is Mike Schmidt Lanny's in trying to look for strikes did he hit Mike Schmidt out leaves off the knife he can't tie up the ballgame he can't get into situation or a can hurt you so mcbride who was elevated from the fifth spot behind smith to the third spot [Music] to give his teammates homerun RBI leader in the National League and the major leagues a chance to swing here in the 8th the Phils Annalee in the game but ahead and he's done it rose around 2nd to 3rd on a double by back ride and the tying run in scoring position for Mike Smith gullickson giving up three hits in the game suddenly gives up three consecutive hits in the eighth inning over two outs two got to accidentally very quickly [Music] no you know it goes back maybe is bull penis not ready there's the pista MacBride grips are double down that right-field line yes here he can finish coming down down this boys it's a fine ball game fine hand from this shouldn't these people here at Olympic Stadium you don't have to be a Montreal fan to give him some applause that just was some superb work by 22-year old Bill Gullickson a lot from him Jeff Reardon the flared from the Mets in the deal for Ellis Valentine at mid years coming in from the bullpen we're going to see colic sent off [Music] [Applause] it's to one event but more than any other brings out the youth in all of it baseball fever catch it it's worth it the preceding message was furnished by major league baseball Gullickson did go tremendous ovation as he left the field replaced by Jeff Reardon Mike Smith for the game perhaps on the line his thoughts about the right-hander of the Expos well Jeff Reardon is the guy that hadn't got a lot of publicity he's not that well-known but but I know him in I've faced him quite often he's a good pitcher it throws real hard he cuts the ball across the strike zone he's a tough guy to hit the ball out of the ballpark on he comes in the ballgame we just have to work him and try and scrape for a run here and there and if he's in the ball game the game will be closed and we run do our best tonight to be Al Smith is in that potential spot with rose to third tying run McBride at second two outs eighth inning 3-1 Expos Perris with a look boy it came out swingin this is the situation that makes manager gray and pitchers worry what do you do second and third first base open belly old well you don't put the winning run on Casey did it though a few times got the guy who played at the best offensive year really if anybody in our league maybe what internationally so look at what Iman if you had it no I think I'd have to be down there on the dirt area right the Miller feel to make up my mind to find out how I'm throwing it's a tough situation one on one Reardon came in to get the final out yesterday and Manny Trillo sent a shot to left with two minute on that was captured by Francona Francona and the Expo a field playing Schmidt with respect one strike where does a baseball pitcher a basketball to start him off and now he's thrown two breaking balls and have almost thrown of runnin the process well the first pitch that he did flourish made it look like Mike just missed him he may be saying no I'm not going to give him that fastball any Marnie they're going to make that perfect slider on the black outside or I'm gonna walk in wanted it - yes they are Danny just from the bench said no if we're going to lose a game let's not lose it to Mike Schmidt let's not lose it to their best hitter late in the ball game let's put him on first base now they take the bat out of Schmidt's hands although in the process they're putting the boat in full winning run at first base but the point well-taken you got the guy who had the best run production in the entire major leagues don't give him a chance to beat that's quite that's high respect you have just seen the highest compliment and Gary Matthews is a pretty tough hitter hidden behind Smith bad at 3:01 during the course of the year nine home runs and sixty seven runs batted in and those 67 RBIs right up there with the leaders he was a Player of the Month in September so he finished experice draw at 3:30 coming down the stretch with seven home runs and 31 RBIs for weeks the season first by putting spin at first it also gives that fill the infield to play at every base [Applause] Matthews one for three tonight his base hit was to right field and his triple yesterday was also to right vases full of pills 3 2 1 expose in the 8th - OH the peeling here in Montreal is the reason the Expos are finally in the playoffs is this man reared finally got they stopped it a man who consistently came in game the opposition first one they've had really uses Mike Marshall work for gene Mauch two balls and a strike you know Matthews is ready to swing and Reardon doesn't want to go three and one although he thought he had a strike enough we're disagreeing with Frank pulli behind the plate on that pitch you could see pulley genuflect behind as if he almost was going to call it a stripe idiot that's his he calls ball and he calls it with diggers and he wasn't he was not indecisive about that call he simply called it ball mcBride number 21 in your picture the time Riordan is one of the many and university players on this Montreal team in fact nearly half their roster 12 of 25 [Music] with all the boys [Applause] get a piece of that - go ahead score walked intentionally here [Music] 96 40-degree night thinking about the cold and the count goes for his catcher Keith Morel Moreland with a home run yesterday [Music] runners will be going on this so a double could bring Schmidt in foul territory cruel party [Music] [Applause] it looked like trouble but it was sailing gets the out Reardon pitches out of trouble in the Philly a to get a run three hits and leaves a bases-loaded three-one Montreal well the strategy pays off for they expose a Jeff Reardon team a walk Mike Schmidt with first base open walk the winning run to first base and Reardon ran the count all the way to 3 & 2 to Gary Matthews got him to pop up the Walker party in foul territory Vukovich takes over in left field and undoubtedly will [Music] McGraw coming into work day forth Philadelphia pitcher Ruthven startup gave a ball three runs two of them earn Brewster two scoreless innings and Loyola scoreless inning Jim panic one of the things that October in September after being in the front office for so long he did manage five years in the minors back nearly six days maintain the sharpness to make those foot second decisions thinking three four moves ahead to be always in the position and apparently he has and that was a very courageous move he had to make in the top of the eighth inning well I think it's the kind of move that you make it if it works out you a hero doesn't you the coat but you got to go with your instincts I'm sure he's been thinking about that conscience and [Music] days a week as the big 2-run homerun the difference in the game is thrown up by Schmidt you heard it so many times as you go over the hitters prior to a series to come to one Nancy don't let this guy beat you this guy can do nothing but beat you that's the tag on the on the Mike Schmidt see Andre Dawson's the Gary Carter's especially in the last three innings one of my theories if it don't pick that guy don't let him beat you in the seventh eighth the ninth inning they're gonna get their hit you're not going to stop him you can't stop him but don't let him beat you in those last four you [Music] one of the many stars for the Phils in 1980 here in September heroes as the second out of in foul territory Parrish fouls out looking ahead to the ninth inning for Philadelphia it'll be Moreland cRIO schedule [Music] we talked about the collegiate the university influence on this Montreal team Bahnson went to Nebraska Lee SC Tulsa produced Steve Rogers written from UMass Vandy Scott Sanderson's get to defensively for the [Music] Terry Francona the bad as well as Brad Mills at UCSB respire really college all-star team this montreal expos club and it is part of their philosophy and they really believe in it it goes right to the top and John McHale Jerri Kindles Arizona champion team in 1980 [Music] trouble going that way dick fall on an astroturf forget a take a funny bounce you get used to annoyed one way and all of a sudden time wise it gets to you much quicker than you think it might all of a sudden the balls there hurry up and get it the first base and misses it that's really after the fact with you careful keep it Jerry baby you can't feel his hands with a second hit 2 for 3 tonight RBI single and a walk one for two they picked Ransone off would have been a stolen base although picked off unable to maintain contact and as he came off the bag he literally was tagged on I think he had his mine to go up one way or the other no matter what happened he took a while get rid of that ball that's why he was additionally safe he slides fast go to hostel page Larry bow and early staying right with him so that's it for the Expos in the eighth inning the bills come up their final turn Moreland Bowa and Trillo scheduled down by two lerton Lee at shortstop is he covered off Francona is safe for a moment [Applause] little help by boa enough of a nudge that the Empire said he was forced off the ken burgin tom seaver olympic stadium in montreal ninth-inning 3 2 1 the expose lead it as Moreland will start things for the bills and their last at-bat John Gonzalez our director George Finkel our producer thanks to my corn for it is statistical work to a no the count Breanna and Reardon of course any baserunner brings the tying run to the plate the ninth in it Moreland's up there taken definitely got to be taking a strike down by two yeah brilliant come close to the strike zone trying to overthrow the ball looks like to me he's got a head get a strikes right down Broadway you need a strike the same spot watching strike two for the Expos he said when we first got Reardon over here he said he just came up to me said I'll tell you one thing I like it when it's toughest and he said yeah and I waited to hear the other thing did that's all he said he said then I knew he really meant it was no other baloney going with it put me in when it's tough [Applause] [Music] really just battle back Breno and strikes out Moreland banning now watches larry bowa keep enough praise on reardon good idea that day Jim Fanny talking about his Boca trying to make that strike zone as small as he can Philadelphia nice baserunners until he sees the strike one Alice dream at the final two outs trailing 3 to 1 [Music] Gary Carter's - Ron Homer back in the third inning the difference in the game bill Gullickson a strong performance for montreal through seven then with two outs in the eighth gave up three consecutive hits to Smith rose [Music] and this Gary man [Music] [Applause] [Music] defensive third baseman very fair should montreal expos are looking to one out away from a to nothing lead [Applause] [Applause] man Frio yesterday Oh [Applause] let's point down to the final strike [Applause] they should do it [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] garlic's ins pitching and area cutters to run homer eight montreal to Philadelphia where the two games two men lead over the defending World Series champions and we'll be back in just a moment and two at home against Philadelphia by identical three-to-one scores and they go to Philadelphia with the fills in the hot seat well dick you know it just say tried to put to shame baseball good pitching stops good hitting and Montreal certainly has done it in this ballpark Philadelphia mayor oh and seventh they just haven't been able Phillies have been able to turn it on I think the key part of this ballgame was when they mark Locke Mike Schmidt don't let Mike Schmidt beachy and they put him over there on first base and Reardon got Gary Matthews and I think for me was a turning part of the ballgame and now for the Phil SELCO home where they'll have the support of their great fans and of course they have their the second-best record in all of the national league during the course of this 1981 year but Montreal joins the Yankees the yeas and the Astros winning the first two of the playoffs thus far NBC's national a Division Series was but brought to you by New York Jets the Jets won at game 28 24 [Music] we're in the top half of the second inning here there's no score one Becks hit so far in the game Cruz just got that Dodgers had a base runner in there half the first inning when Baker was safe on air by Garner here is walling he takes it Game two of the Gulf cruise at first base out by Garvey Jerry Rice about five days sits left with an older sister but three of the five base hits rough or for left-handed hitters who gets the first one today his pitching coach Ron perranoski was talking about rice saying he has difficulty at times keeping the ball away from left-handed hitters they pull off the ball but he rides it inside and they hit him rice doesn't give up any place on balls one point six four nine innings and that's the best on the Los Angeles staff he's behind walling now at the count of two balls and no strikes fouled out of play [Music] two balls one strike one out in the first inning Terry Puhl flied to left garner line to right Tony Scott bounced out third to first easy
