the Sun is still shining brightly let's look at the defense and let's field Greg luzinski of the Phillies he shouldn't have much Sun trouble over in centerfield however it might get a little more difficult as George Foster will be playing in center George Foster and to change in center field moving over into right field which is the most difficult because Rick Monday has been hooked there now and Rick will be looking literally into the Sun on a high fly ball hit out to him coming into the infield at third base you are pity he bro is sending there visiting with Whitey Herzog he's supposed to get third base for the American League the shortstop Larry Bowa of the Philadelphia Phillies everything in the world is gonna said about here as good as anybody in here's one of the great pros of all arrived Joe Morgan's antonetti fourth at second base over at first base wearing 20-plus stitches in his chin after a Pablo fastball dipped in there the other day in Houston Steve Garvey behind the plate newest member of the st. Louis Newseum Board of Directors Ted Simmons Oh the record of 12 and for lighter blue this is Keith Jackson along with Howard Cosell and Don Drysdale and we are ready to go with the 1978 all-star game rod carew the lead-off George Brent will follow and Jim Rice the third hitter for the American League would be Ricci since hit the target well certainly Keith these American League hitters are no strangers to phi2 blue he just left them who seems like a few months ago kind of interesting the porch you made some time back that he was the winning pitcher this the last time the American League won [Applause] he throws in on the grass at third rod guru the top vote-getter with more than 4 million passed by the baseball public fouled away starting his twelfth consecutive all-star game John Zimmer Boston Red Sox manager coaching at first Kansas City boss fight a Herzog at third Don Zimmer has never coached at first base at any time in his entire life the left centerfield doesn't care whether it [Applause] you just the price No it was the top vote getter is the best dinner incontestably and BayHawks internal check out it again he got the curveball up over the plate he hit into the alley George Buster could not chase it down now here's what a great base runner guru is he sees that foster goes into nobody there's nobody there it's throwing it all the way to third base and he just goes from second to third and makes it easily obviously a smart baseball man he is saw the lack of a cutoff there and took the liberty and George Brett about the breakthrough in Ken all-star game three for 27 all singles Oh as he comes to his 12th he's subtly opening up a new page as a brick cool to start the game seems a long time ago done that I mentioned that the absences of Jackson yes rimsky and Monson had joined this team more closely together but that's the fact in quickly the American League evidence well you're talking about a manager that has as much pride as anybody in the game of baseball and that's the only one out here that they had a little meeting and they've talked about boys we have been embarrassed and that's the word that they used in the paper over the last 15 years we have only won one time let's go do something and they've got off on the right track [Applause] err brought through having scored the first run of the ballgame after an opening triple doubled home by George Brett the batter is Jim Rice red at second nobody out top of the first inning [Applause] II think we ought to point out that the starting players in the all-star game must play the first three innings now that is excluding the pitchers invite of blue start getting wracked around they will not make him stay in there but your regular starters are supposed to play and that's if they stay away from any injury of course there's belly the role you just stated was not always the rule if you go back to the beginning of this whole series 1933 conceived by arch wart and you'll see the goofy Gomez pitched five innings ball two strikes light applause greeted by Carew's triple threats double American League breaking on top one to nothing why sit sit on the ground of mortgage Joe in the sunshine looked at Brett go to third and goes out Jim went away there's a case in point all-star game or what have you here's Jim Rice a run in red at second base here's the man that's leading the major leagues and home runs in RBIs he gives himself up to hit the ball to the right side to get his man to third and I'll tell you that's that's a little something right there for mr. rice here is a guy who can deliver Richie Zisk of the Texas Ranger checks and he fixes a breaking pitch in there a little low Richie with 13 home run getting back quickly to what you said about Jim Wright is frequently stated all he wants is to be recognized as a complete fault out of the place there was a case in point right there hitting that ball to the right side to move Brett to third good boy Sisk started the season as the designated hitter at Texas than the right field back to DA stand the left field now Oliver got hurt he is knocked across 51 runs and George Brett waiting at third with one out just off the plate Reggie does not look like the sister of a year ago at least in physical construction is taken off a lot of weight has the trim look of an athlete now this is all that will bring to the plate with runners at first and third that Carl doesn't fists and Carlton Fisk's that has been getting a little warmer at Morgan comes to the Boston catcher as you see in his sixth all-star game let's see if Carlton can hold blue if he was in Fenway Park you know he can pull blue 73Ā° as we start the ballgame and Carlton rolls it foul to the right game is very important to call fest why his rivalry with Thurman Munson through the years this is a sixth all-star appearance the public address announcing noted a few moments ago ball is hit in the air to the right side Rick Monday coming I'm going back and forth and [Music] [Applause] [Music] the Rutgers warming up in the bullpen well there's a good play by Morgan in a very heads-up play by the runner at third Brett and his manager Whitey Herzog if Morgan makes the play Brett goes if money makes the play he does not go because Monday's coming to the plate the man makes the play going away into shallow right field and he scores easily right on the button 20 Monday couldn't see it nor regional Fred Lynn is at the plate that is a tough son this panel day this is the Sun field in right field here in San Diego and you'll get a little bit in center field but that I'm sure that that's why Tommy Lasorda James [Applause] yes [Applause] America he has had a long talk with Jim today at lunchtime he was said he was the center very tired pitcher in the stadium game a year ago he takes this game seriously do I talk to him about the fact that summit suggested that manager walking was saving his own man Ron Guidry as you look at Billy and said no I heard him say velocity and been a slightly tired pitcher in recent efforts and I buy that important I am arrested pitching got against this Gilbert be make up three year ago Joe Morgan George Foster for plan would be Greg luzinski [Applause] that funny chicken you saw in the dugout is called super chicken in real life underneath all that buzz had gianoulis traveled the country with Don Drive [Applause] [Laughter] become a great act he had a little like the frantic Philly we have seemed invent steady of in Philadelphia armored churro getting in the top of this inning he drove carries a 25 game hitting streak into this game he's got his stroke had a bad start but it's really returned to the Pete Rose everyone knows outside seemed at the patty shades he was hitting the ball so summit yesterday in the workout and again today save one after another [Music] [Applause] [Music] interesting laying up the absence of Reggie Jackson Lovers Lane your background a fever of over on Jitsu his absence gives Billy Martin a center fielder who plays the position had most professionally and sophisticatedly Fred Lynn so in a defensive sense the American League may have prospered by Reggie's illness Joe Morgan takes strike the outfield offensively for the American League Jim Rice in left Brett linen Center Richie Zisk in right with George Brett at third Freddy Patek in short Don money at second Rod Carew at first thousand fists catching the coaches for the National League Chuck tenor of the Pittsburgh Pirates at third Danny Ozark the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies at verse one out the pitch to Morgan back to you great great relationship in real fact between the thought and Martin press conference just as you look at Rick Monday right front of Tommy Martin Cola sorta you don't have a chance we sought it said that being the case had nothing to said [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the pictures descriptions and accounts of the game about the express written consent agenda baseball is prohibited the batter is George Foster 302 18 home runs 63 runs batted in and understand how Cincinnati ever gave up Frank Duffy for this fella in understand how San Francisco ever let it get away [Applause] one strike pitch to George the umpires in tonight's ballgame back of the plate it is Paul fryer at the national league nestor shylack of the american league at first terracotta National League second bill Deegan American League third foster fouled away on the left the Alliant all runge of the National League and on the right DUI and Larry McCoy of the American League six umpires 7:20 game seasons what a picture very impressive [Music] [Applause] blue reach for a triple by guru sacrifice fly American League lead rec one reverting back to that first inning two left-handers in a row got extra base hit off by the blue now vitae was quoted in the paper saying that in his last three starts during the regular season he just does not felt that good on the mound he's lost a little rhythm but the American League played Billy Martin baseball in that first inning the way George Brett brand to force the double the way Jim Rice hit to the right side to give himself up then way Brett came in on the fly to Joe Morton venturesome baseball Steve Rogers has sit-down in the National League bullpen we all right-hander so blue strikes out live it will pitch down money you have become quite a baseball story themselves in 1978 they really have and this young man is an integral part of that story but most importantly he's played all but 12 games at first base this year it's a strike yet under the voting system he's elected they all start second baseman which raises to my drought shirt shot foul into the crowd ricochets out Jim Palmer waiting in the dugout Crescent beginning back in the six Drysdale gets up in the booth moves around a little the ball getting distressing Lake float they foul it up here I'll tell you they got something on it I think it's the stool get the bar [Applause] [Music] [Applause] pristine responsible for the Hat on Steve [Applause] he took a whack there came right back the next day though and ripped it up that 20 stitches taken in his chin Brett's Ponte Cindy was only worried about Steve's teeth watch closely to see if they would turn blue the tell-tale sign of one in one frat party you were mentioning the selection system the Kansas City short stuff this game first time he has been chosen by the baseball public he said but upfront if the public had not voted him the trip to the all-star game he would not back to a relatively bad experience in 1972 he was told he'd been selected [Applause] is all the first place they introduced Freddy potnick as the smallest man on the all-star squad he might be the smallest man that's true but I'll guarantee he's got one of the biggest hearts I think one of the best pictures I've ever seen was during the playoffs last year covered by NBC when contact was shown sitting in the dugout after the elimination by the Inc all alone isolated the whole Makani of defeat as Jim McKay would say typifies by the picture pitcher Jim Palmer would sit down who has [Applause] voting is over the American Way extract the baserunner but they leave the game up for one luzinski if the billet is Steve Garvey of the Dodgers Ted Simmons of the Cardinal will be the three batters the fourth man would be Rick Monday of the Dodger Greg luzinski 21 home runs 55 runs batted in yesterday in batting practice he hit the ball above the level of the stadium that seemed and into the second deck you look fearful man he put on quite a show Keith as you know and he hit a couple of them out there and he had the people here 30,000 plus he had him who in and on and he was taking him out of the second deck at 370 the dimensions are 330 down the line as he swings and misses that a former fastball look at this as we pull back to give you an idea he not only was hitting it there but he was hitting it way up into the air and dropping it softly that's strike two he hasn't touched Palmer yet it's 370 left and right and 420 straightaway center here in San Diego [Applause] Baumer philostrate took something off earnest inside one into the Lozinski Rogers is in the National Lake ten Steve maybe the next picture Montreal right-hander is pitched in hard luck for the string again was this kid listed in the first base hit of the ball game okay Steve gobby coming up we've mentioned the patch on his chin and for that story it's my talk with free Gaga I love that star on your band oh what's the point all right a lot of times guys say well you use the globe so well why don't you try something else well I tried to catch the ball with my chin and it doesn't work believe me so I'm going back to the globe from Li 22 stitches and yet here you are playing in the all-star game why oh hi Justin we talked before I think that the baseball all-star game is so important to me especially being a writing candidate in 1974 and playing and suing for years when fans take the time to vote for somebody vote for myself there's no way that I'm going to stay away I had the mumps in 74 and I played and a little old 22 pitch cottage immunity be complaining in this year here's two hive from Palmer and the count on Steve Garvey to balls in those strikes his fifth all-star game or 62 average he fessed base hit the luzinski got just shows you his strength he got a curve ball actually inside and just jammed himself terribly but we're strong enough just to fight it off of it comes high again three balls and no strike that's mrs. Lewinsky on the left and mrs. Larry Bowa on the right [Applause] Darby walks it will bring to the quake ten sevens of the st. Louis Cardinal and the one thing about Palmer he has been throwing well he showed good velocity but at the very offset he got Morgan on a high fastball he got a strikeout he got faster on a tiebreaking pitch he tried to hold up he has been up and now he got the high curveball to Lozinski I just said caught it off of him and he walks Garvey on high fastball but he is up he had two quick strikes on Lozinski throwing the fastball and he switched James to speeding through the curve and it cost that Simmons his fifth all-star appearance the catcher tough man at the plate infield is up the hi Johnny Bench was voted by the fans as the starting catcher he has had back trouble for better than a month I have a telegram for Johnny Bench that says give my thanks to all my fans who voted for me I deeply regret not being able to perform is their selection to the National League all-star standards as a result I hope the short rest will be a stepping stone for a healthy and productive second half the season that pictures fouled away and must become worthy of their recognition sign your friend Johnny Baker he's got a lot of plans and so does this fellow at the plate Ted Simmons I think maybe the most under publicized exceptional hitter in baseball and he stood up before us yesterday and he said I appreciate what Johnny Bench is and what he's meant to the game but I believe I deserve to be here this year and on the record he's right you saw that little note at the bottom he's the first st. Louis Cardinal catcher to start an all-star game since Walker Cooper longer to roger Cooper Matt Keough in the American League bullpen [Applause] it's pretty near feels left mr. that doesn't fire nest almost pulled a hamstring getting out of the way love to watch did Simonton best kill Matt kill sunup martyt a major leaguer back in the 15th late fifties he's here so proud of his boy you know he's got to be here and he should be proud he's a young man who had just started pitching a year and a half ago he was an infielder one two two and two just to show you how old on Drysdale is there's another father-and-son combination here raivo the old Detroit Tiger his son Bob Boone Philadelphia catch a member of the National League Alston two on nobody out National League's first threat of the game Lozinski off second Derby off first 2 2 pitch to Simmons fouled away Sunim going down shadow problem still is obvious and so is the Sun problem this Billy Martin looks on pĆo warming up the American bullpen Steve Rogers in the National bullpen I've priced ticket west of the Rockies on this night the ticket to this event the simmons went for that part coming up teeth another of those guys it doesn't get a lot of picture but he continued recommender player of the month the first month of the season hitting more home runs than the other high on a pro-rata basis for this year Arizona State Rick and right field defensively as a sore arm having banged into a wall probably won't play our hole with one out luzinski on second and Garvey at first in the American league-leading in the bottom of the second inning by a score of two to nothing Palmer trying to put out the fire there's loose ends get second garbage over at first inside it doesn't appear that Palmer is going to go too much with his breaking pitch he has been hurt a couple of times he's got it up he's been throwing mainly fastball except for the Toutle ism there's the strike what a cute kid that's Rick Monday's little boy at that age when the teeth go and it becomes a source of pride to show the vacant space at that age one in one to bun day this is one of Palmer's great strengths because Jim when he's throwing well and he can pitch up and that ball just takes off on you and for any hitter they'll tell you it is just awful hard to lay off of that high fastball make it one in two on Monday LarryBoy is on deck number five he took a little bit off the curveball and Monday just spoiling at this put very well get a hitter for lighter blue Tom Lasorda decides he's got opportunity to get something going with one out of two on all waiting on back see what Rick can do and what one two pitch over the second one back to first so [Music] if the Americans they got they still lead it to nothing after two baseball's greatest hit a rod carew wanted to be traded wants to be with a winner didn't work out his average is falling heavily since I talked to rod about it rod ever since all the turmoil about whether or not should be traded you having expressed the desire to be traded your average is fallen forty points is there relationship between the two facts well you know how I think for about a month you know I had a real bad attitude my mental outlook was pretty bad and I think it's hard for any ball prayer to go out there and concentrate and doing his job you know when he had so many things on his mind all I can do now is just go ahead and try and have a good second half and try and raise my average a few more points so rod carew leads off the top of the order for the American League in the top of the third inning with George Brett and Jim Rice to follow Keith you know what's scary you're talking about Carew's average dropping he's only hitting 349 when he's in a slump that's what he that's his trophy is the top boat get it when he's in a slump that fella the left center foster going get deep way back it is off the Royal Gorge clocked at through third second heading for his second defensive from oh he [Applause] southpaw and really killing don't they blue got the pitch up again and look it through what power he has to the opposite field the breaking pitch is up and now Foster actually trails the ball he loses perspective of where he is between the ball in the wall he'll look down again he gives up but he has a chance to make the catch that hits at the base of the wall Carew as we said before just an excellent base runner this time he hit the cutoff man with no chance George Brett since Buster deep to the track to the wall by the room [Music] [Applause] we be free nothing twenty-sixth time players have tripled in all-star games but nothing in the record books throws you it's to success [Applause] piece of perhaps relevant trivia as this first pitch comes in and is fouled off Jim Rice has gone crazy hitting triples he's had five and five games and if you go back in the record books you'll see he may be encroaching upon a fellow named and Crawford hi in the air the shunt field Monday comes in [Applause] that's two down the better Jesus had the most happy fella rot Goro slumps it's a 349 has done noted get back up to 375 is so long off precursor this house in a way I don't know about some people want to put their true of tobacco with one secret other but what guru which is in his right cheek before he says it pulls that side of his face tightens deceive and if you believe that but that's what he said as I did this Sango this is scheduled this is first time and a sacrifice why don't speak enough to get the heart so he has an RBI [Applause] green happy the American league-leading in the top of the third hello by the flu and Jim hunter have a lot for homeruns in all-star game that's the most by any pitcher bench Aaron Garvey and Wynn having homered off item of that group only Garvey is here [Applause] so far no changes for either team they'll be coming shortly [Applause] roll on the ground aboard [Applause] the American League picks up one more on [Applause] [Music] hmm clean I mean really clean and it holds any said I want you beer enriched shampoo body on tap gives your hair super body super hold brood with one-third real beer yeah but don't drink it just shampoo whether I roll it Tanith curl it or blow it dry it gives my hair super body super hold and the shine of your life it's the beer shampoo that does it in 3 bodybuilding formulas that's body content Polaroid's got a new sx-70 film if developed twice as fast now and gives you their most brilliant colors ever what's that weird yeah good how about that painful [Music] yeah that's great and you can't be Polaroids color you get it with one step simpler camera in the world just press the button motor hands get a one step [Music] you know what traveler's checks are for traveling but did you ever think how valuable they could be right around home for those unexpected times you find yourself without cash here's a suggestion when you come back from a trip save your last American Express traveler's check stick it in your wallet and leave it there now you've got emergency money when you need it and it's safe money if you should lose it you can get it back American Express traveler's checks save one because someday it could save you Palmer out for his third inning of pitching with a three nothing lead the American over the national it'll be Larry four for National League the Philadelphia shortstop Terry Puhl laughs beuter for the Houston Astros swinging a bat what Reggie Smith now has come to the on deck circle so it'll be Smith not fool batting for provider blue and then he throws is scheduled the top of the order regi the right builder for Los Angeles Turner top very low for the first time in the ballgame [Applause] Jim Palmer has allowed one hit single by luzinski little soft wound had dropped in the left office curveball thrown to the hands he walked Garvey and get a double play to get him out of trouble the [Applause] Steve Rogers of Montreal in the National League bullpen warming up at 11 and 7 record and that 2 1 3 e ra tells you that the young man is pitched in tough luck stroke to the right side it rocks and drops it in no-man's land and he's the board to the single second hit now here is Reggie sweat the Dodger right fielder who hits with RO power from Rex [Applause] not been an all-star competition the graphic as you just saw planning itself and not bad during this season an exceptional Lassie and a media factor in the World Series gave the Yankees fits this is a complete fall play Reggie Smith rectum goner on first nobody out 3-nothing American League bottom of the third inning I'm told whose baseball rolls out of the deal from the bullpen [Music] the is hired a Reggie one and one Rogers for the National Akio for the American League he all figures to be the next American League Pitcher right-hander from the Oakland A's of the his load good one Zimmer so I'm walking around yesterday without that big chaw of tobacco in his mouth I didn't look like the same thing tried his wife was with him and she forbids a minute in her breast I was giving them Guinea in the club out or in the hotel lobby yesterday I said well I said you know you might end up the same way the same distance between you and then second place club if you don't think he says I'm not gonna yeah girls bonus at the base easily stolen on former you could all see the jumpy hat [Applause] well you see the big high leg kick of Jim Palmer boy an excellent base runner pretty pop tech just satisfied to make the catch of the ball hold them there there's the jumper and he gets bored and he can accelerate for this little guy has been a great key to that fit laris : 16 this seasonal have been caught 3/3 here's Pete Rose now under the National League with a runner in scoring position throws in a shot centerfielder Brett Lynn his first time wasn't Larry Bowa who got his teammates together Gary Maddox and others when the bills were slumping earlier in the year we came in from Monday night game and he said let's just force it let's run run run as a nigerian that except it's a big that's right one farmer hits the corner Gretchen Martin the American League skippers bride and they're here as we've said so many times and all to get a different man on the field than he is off the fear [Applause] 1 1 pitch 2 rows it was rose he took the starting lineup for the National League to the plate tonight instead of trauma sort [Applause] there is a considerable degree of operation between Thomas or cathedrals have been few athletes whoever's interesting but complementary things about roads in the way he plays his game pursue I think perhaps is a fair word his profession he had his young son yesterday in the clubhouse and they were kidding about 14 and 14 be rollover the rights of [Applause] [Music] well you look at Milly Martinus to relate it and it's just a little popper they'll have there's the giveth of all players through Jim Palmer just a routine play Palmer had to get to the bag stop because he knows he's got the speedy poets second day if he runs across a bag and forgets about both why it might be a 3 to 1 ballgame at the plate Joe Morgan who's had trouble with a pool stomach muscle for some time Little Joe obviously when he's not healthy the Big Red Machine dove a rule who swiftly with Morgan and bench both laid up how can you lose to people like that and continue to win Spock he'll find a way he's still right there isn't low and away two balls no strikes two out Larry Bowa is a third face American League leads three to nothing actually get back bottom of the third inning [Applause] the way that desires Carlton Fisk in reach from that position that he was in see Jim Palmer little Lavin see Fisk he's got to go as high as you can go or just loses his balance turnip all briars that is like trust into keeping him upright walks bargain King if the major leagues a year ago comes to the plate representing the tying run bottom of the third inning two men out National League growling Friedan up [Music] [Applause] goes to the mound to talk to Jim Palmer cool moment let's go down to pop you go who has mind a blow whether we're sitting here chatting was by the blue having just left the all-star game and bodily kind of a tough start in the all-star game how do you how do you get rod crew out as he changed since your days and the American League at all no yes it's been a while since I've seen everybody it's still the same old rod but I think the key to my my three innings is that I got the ball up and which is a closer look we did a plate the last restarts I was really been struggling but even though I gave up three runs an all-star competition you're competing against the best I was another league so just being able to throw the ball over the plate of the plus right now because I've really had panic over the last three ballgames and had pitched but you know I feel the big leagues big early lead in the ball games and I'm not even completing what I've completed one of the three so I won two of the three thought you know that's the plus itself but you know when you're struggling like that you want to find yourself I'm not just really going to push a panning bug because other wants to things like easy collect the whole thing okay let's go back upstairs all right Bob thank you very much the book on vitae three innings three earned runs five hits struck out two walked one [Applause] now Jim Falmer will pitch the George Foster and he fouls it back one of the things George enjoys about all-star competition is the fact that he gets a chance to look at some of the best pitchers in baseball forcing him obviously and dessert adjustment each time he comes to the plate you know the front [Applause] and he's against a craftsman right now Jimbo [Applause] I feel very deep warp oh there it is again he's going to keep using that pitch Delphis mythical fudge is pretty quick all prior going to give him a little more room he couldn't bear to punch it in his left LarryBoy is still a third Joe Morgan at first you've got to out free nothing American League lead national with its biggest threat of the game and foster takes in high-end pie 2 & 1 it really up there isn't they done fudge is going to have a or this sleeve side about sixteen inches on one arm and on the left oh he's going to be about 17 and a half before this is over [Applause] holding Morgan blouson purse I don't know if Joe run much not with that sore stomach muscle around to give himself ready for the second half [Applause] I can't seem to get it down and it's maybe one of the most exasperating feelings in a person good head and especially a major league pitcher never happened to you not while high that much but just being wild when you're trying to figure out some kind of Kentucky windage to get that thing in the strike zone and you still got to be careful because of the caliber of the hitter against you better believe the homerun King of the big leagues [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Billy's been out working already [Applause] or up in the bullpen he's been throwing he's just about ready two out bases loaded rain up in the American League Greg luzinski at the plate [Applause] he got the first hit off home he fouls this one away [Applause] isn't that interesting never a grand slam home run in an all-star game there was a game in Detroit in 1941 the National League leading by two runs two out two men on bottom of the ninth Ted Williams up out of the ballpark open the right-field stand that was a three-run homer but never our Grand Slam [Applause] in fact and it's one in one program an exclusive presentation of ABC sports let's pause five seconds to allow our local stations to identify themselves this is television to KATU Portland [Applause] 1 1 pitch coming to Lozinski [Music] [Applause] it is too [Music] Brina third base Joe Morgan at second base George Foster at first base throughout the National League with a considerable threat in Greg luzinski at the plate advantage is it's geared to 1/3 continues to feed life [Applause] bigger gray consecutive walks in the wake of Larry bro its opening single the strikeout of Reggie Smith sandwiched in between [Music] [Applause] and to he probably took a swing at all [Applause] now take another look at it and that's why it's so hard for those power hitters or any hitter and that is a national league ball also up in your eyes like that with a big horse up there like him he figured I might they'll be I like to run batted in for Lozinski [Applause] FOA tribe the wood yet because if you talked about having fun and of course you do have fun at all-star games right now the fun is for Jim home this is not fun this is now work and it's pride at stake out there you can just bet your bottom dollar on that they says are still loaded as garbage yes right and the front one interesting lay this time when karma pitch to Lozinski he did not go to the careful everything was fast everything was high [Applause] it just can't afford to make a mistake on these guys there's no easy man in this lineup foster the plank so 22 stitches in his chin look at Billy Martin whether it's a farmer but sobbing who gets so much publicity he's comin a direction rippln is the model boy whose studiously manage others like teeth in myself feel that this is a terrific young man but he is is a terrific ballplayer he comes through again two runs batted in for Derby they throw to third base just in case Hogan had left too soon you've got to do that because they're not Eric tochterman they are for Jim Palmer Kelly was hoping that Palmer could get out of this city he does have to bring in young men Keo in a situation like this but that's what he has to do he's got to try and get out of the inning so time is out in the sport of an all-star game the score tied at three three we'll be right back Beach California he's six to 175 pounds six foot four dad Marty Keogh former Red Sox outfielder right now Bob Uecker is with Jim Palmer found Jimmy had a first easy first two innings and all of a sudden things left you got kind of high well you're right I roll and fall hard but I just had trouble getting the ball down and my mistake of course the ball got kind of a ball off the fist and you know you have Morgan coming up with two outs and you want to throw them a strike but you don't wanna give them some good to hit and I just got behind them and then you got George Foster coming up and obviously you want to pitch very carefully to him and then that's followed by Lozinski which doesn't make it any easier and then I made a real bad pitch to to Steve Garvey was just a slider it's kind of like a slider he hit for the home run last year in the all-star game it's the only really mistake I made you night other than walking all those guys l33 ballgame back upstairs the batter is Ted Simmons to face the young Oakland right-hander one of the note on Garvey he's now hit safely in five straight all-star games as kyoki's outside the national league record of six consecutive games mutual maze and bench the American League record seven environmental [Applause] there's a strike it's one-on-one and there's the little scroogie that this young man has and I said before deep that this kid right here Matt Keough has pitched only about a year and a half well maybe two years including half of this year and I'll tell you he pitches out there like he's been around 15 years [Applause] you see him turn that ball over and sink away from the and hello watch it again look at him turn it over this comes out stays on top great fits great location Flanigan is now in the bullpen for the American League [Applause] ringback and this can't get to it I was wondering too National League with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to try and chasing Jim Palmer still two out luzinski is at second base Garvey is at first base there's correct in there Steve just outside most people you see in the background there are in a camera well back on play a considerable distance away from home played it is not disconcerting to the Fitri because they are so far away it's a foreshortening of the lens that makes them look a little closer to you [Applause] check swing head great for the national well they have no chance whatsoever as you look at Lozinski 1/3 and Garvey at second base based on window comminity danios arts get simmons action and the American League bullpen left-hander Mike Flanagan of the Baltimore Orioles starts to throw Rick Mundy is the ninth man to come to bat in the bottom of the third inning for the National League Monday hit into a double play his first time [Applause] back in the second inning [Applause] Oh rice goes back Jim is still going back makes the cats of the inning is my riddle but it is a bigot and after three were all tied at three will be the third scheduled hitter then comes the citrus strike one [Applause] the wind very gently waving the flag and centerfield and blowing toward light [Applause] is just collapse Sorensen is now in the bullpen for the American League the Milwaukee right-hander who's having a brilliant year two and two tool in his horns and the reason he's going right there is because your pitcher is in the fourth spot this inter that's fouled at the plate by Fred Lynn and in a game like this when you've got the big squat everybody in all-star a manager doesn't worry about winning until the late innings to pinch-hit for the pitcher he'll go through his whole staff through his whole bent and that's why Larry Sorensen is throwing right now because Matt Keough in the ninth spot would be the fourth man to hit this inning what does he do in the 16th my Jaedong the record is 15 [Music] they said that came apart lanterns at home with a single foster JC's in back [Applause] what's this bad Explorer and this really explodes because he's got that handle that ball hit right off the end of the bat that's all that ready Lin has a handle in his head [Music] [Applause] better is gone money the Milwaukee Brewers our people hold against win [Music] what is struck out his first time ball gets away cinnamon rolls to the backstop and limbs accept could be a basketball look like he had his loan that ball did hit him in the glove kitchen and lit appeared that it might have broke his strings but it did not it has that kind of effect and you see it kind of sailing away Simmons out late and just off of the glove he had the glove in kind of an awkward position and we'll see how they rule it call it wild fish let's not go through that [Laughter] [Applause] honey hits it to the right side Smith hold this ground makes the cats win bucks the third [Applause] strings under their feet here at San Diego State of course in the National - guests eat that you excited for the part of the nationally I have to say that I would have to say every member of the Red Sox team is familiar with Reggie Smith except the ones who've joined the team in just the last couple of years as you watch Reggie again because he used to electrify the fans at Fenway Reggie when a member of the Red Sox with that very kind of throw again and again and again complete ball player as I said Fred Patek the shortstop for the American League Kansas City Royals pitch is high 274 average on the season for Freddie and there effect family missin the boys Roy Howell of the Toronto Blue Jays third baseman out on deck there's a our last ball is hammered in there against object Oh strike 1 foul is out to hit in the pitcher spot the Blue Jays third base [Applause] I'm called no pitch you saw Freddy Patek he just didn't back out and think that time was going to be automatically called he called it while he was standing there looking at Roger so that the home plate umpire Paul prior could hear him then prior called timeout one out Lynn at second base a straight back hello Rodgers in 20 starts this season his average 7 and 2/3 innings Paul hit sharply frankly don't understand Lin on that play the ball hit sharply and in front of it well he committed himself and he couldn't stop he started to go he knew right there he was wrong because the shortstop is going right towards the where the play is going to be made you see why your ears are saying get out but the throw there Rose makes the tag can be unpredictable he can he can pull a double switch or he might just say well I'll gamble with it bat there's no question about that Freddy has stolen 23 then caught five times to keep in Titan's it will be interesting to see the leg kick the leg movement of Roger to see what might be going through pot decks mind [Applause] laughs it doesn't go britches blown away [Applause] after looking now checking with the invitee Herzog in the third-base coaching box [Applause] doesn't go time call house stepping up [Applause] top of the order scheduled next that means Caruth we've seen his act already it's been consistent zoo trip Rogers playing catch with derby you [Applause] 101 Royale first Roy he was at Texas look Levophed right he was that at Texas [Applause] Cerie played smart he balls one strike to the blue guy third baseball [Applause] very deliberate moments the ballgames all tied at 3 3 2 but the American in the first inning one on the third national got three of the bottom of the theater [Applause] for the basketball [Applause] Steve Rogers the sweater described in my suppose as competitors there goes pop deck pitch is fouled yourself Billy Turner move for the count went to two giving Royale a couple of shots to hit through that right side [Applause] our beholding Steve has to move quickly into his defensive posture and again now swinging fouls of the way at this time [Applause] you look at that blue jay will go right in the middle of that shirt [Applause] the all-time prosperous logos in baseball that is amazing what that thing is sold in Canada courtesy of Peter police well I'd say they've got it on everything [Applause] a remarkable concession sale of Phillip is just incredible there's nothing in Toronto without a blue jay on it on police 3-2 pitch to help Arctic go into bonus hit down the garbage he will do it himself [Applause] [Music] three and a half three three tires I know the colors are coarse you trace the development of color in baseball that's Charlie Finley that's right I on the soil the Dominion have been increasingly rotund skipper feeling better about things freaking are always hit it after the left side and rice coming over near the line he makes the catch or the second out [Applause] and here's Joe Morgan who I suppose it had his brothers that could play baseball cowherd of an embryo it's a sport always get to go from that area he talked about Thomas Odin enter Qatar Benedict me when he was playing he always had that big overhand curveball that branch rickey curveball they call him snakes what a difference a year makes as you look at that staff all stomach muscle though has really been a problem for two out I to the left side third baseman coming over breath looks and it's out of reach it ricocheted off the shoulder back to camp you're mentioned Lasorda's overhand curve and that crooked off he was once in a pitching duel against her score of Cleveland they would died nothing nothing being allowed only one hit and six score to feeling pretty good about things suddenly two men on base and he threw that overhand curve to a third baseman named al Rosen they are still looking for the ball in Lake Erie and mr. Rosen is here in town was the president of the first two out one strike count on Morgan de noche sorry buddy Sorenson did pencils the first place went through [Applause] Danny Ozark of abilities coaching at first Chuck Tanner of the pirates coaching at third Morgan hits it high in the air to left field rice coming in shortstop PopTech going back in his cotton catch a fashion liquors fandom an can't punch around and we remain tied at three three after four innings of play you'll have an all red sox outfield and you'll have linen center flanked by teammates Jim Rice in left and Dwight Evans in right [Applause] [Music] or red socks on the beer right now is Carlton Fisk remains behind the plate Rick Rosen might well have been there except he's gone some ligaments the outside part of his ankle he's going to be laid up for 10 days at least maybe two weeks a longer Ricky's here however that's right hey the injury hurt the youngster terribly had occurred in the first inning of the game at Cleveland Sunday plotting it the second base is short that Zimmer is managing that it was fine but this should see it swelling up Sorensen on the mound for the American League against George Foster for the National League that ball punched over to the right side and great white makes it look easy there you saw the great ranger Frank white Franco play a little bit deeper second base with nobody on and a lot of the second baseman over yes great brain watch where he makes the play on this particular ball that foster hit the insert off the end of the bat there he is he's out in the outfield grass to throw him out and it makes it look just like a routine boy batter is Greg luzinski with Rowley fingers beside the Eagle pump is now up and throwing in the bullpen and never by Lozinski Frank white again right there and there you had a chance to see white as he had to change his motion he had to change his complete direction that ball off of the glove he's playing the ball back up the middle off of the glove of Sorenson white now has to cut back and another Oh home that loose green g-slide very more ground than you really think you suffer if caught the product of Ewing Kauffman though baseball academy you're said you can start it again really if he can find more Frank light batter is Steve Garvey the all-star voting in the National League you can see Steve one big love to see that man hit to the opposite field you if any do it better and with so much power it was garbage I delivered the base hip and to actually grunts in that third inning three run outburst action in the National League bullpen right-hander Rowley fingers of the San Diego Padres throwing to context hitting it over so we'll be back to Florida 70 in all-star game after this work playing out in left field will be Dave Winfield also of the San Diego Padres I think they've been very popular here and they figured up call it for you as we go to the 6:00 news on Thursday okay Keith it'll be Carlton Fisk delete it off he'll be followed by Freddy Lynn and then Frank white in that order I would guess that manager Tommy Lasorda as he brings in a new pitcher Rowley fingers and Winfield the left fielder he will make a double switch the pitcher was hitting in the seventh spot Winfield will go into the seventh spot and fingers will go up into the fourth spot in Greg luzinski spot Carlton Fisk you had a sacrifice fly his first time at bat into a fielder's choice in the third so he's over one of course these American League hitters are no stranger to Rolly fingers team up left side he throws and LarryBoy LarryBoy saying he wants it and that is the world as the centerfielder Freddie Lynn Fred is struck out and he similars last time at bat a broken bat single up the middle vitae blue started and Steve Rogers came on and now Raleigh fingers the three pitchers used by National League manager Tommy Lasorda [Applause] want to know [Applause] Oh [Applause] under braking Rosen bought a left side with Morgan and Garvey on the right side the outfield of Winfield clusters good from left to right and the battery of Ted Simmons of Raleigh fingers [Applause] fingers doesn't waste any time he knows what he wants to do he just gets it in frozen the girl Rollie Fingers help himself out [Applause] yes sir love on the line drive back through the middle [Applause] taking a stab at it what he did he saved himself a base hit he puts it to Larry Pole we're very alertly pounces on it and grows the runner out wellas got that like quick this pole is having a fine fine game couple of base hit number of fielding chances all handled flawlessly here's the second baseman Frank white this is his first time at bat popped him up right side it might be playable it will be playable there's Garvey they're tied at three repet ex-offenders moves in behind home plate to take over for Carlton Fisk or there's one of the fine young catchers in all of baseball [Applause] one ball one strike [Applause] what you see Sundberg having hanging down from that mask is what the Dodgers Steve Yeager will use [Applause] there's Bob Uecker [Applause] where that hanging down just protects against a foul tips in the Adam's apple boy they can sting jamsi [Applause] said it was hard to see [Applause] a betrayal [Applause] Dave Winfield hitting $2.99 16 home runs 62 RBIs on the year we talked about what the Padre management did here opening the gate for the workout yesterday but Howard's this young man right here did something that was long his port more important he ran a luncheon about 20 miles north of here as we looked at a fall for a thousand disadvantaged kids he is a tremendous human being there is this called Winfield pavilion and he's a tremendous all-around [Applause] [Music] Rodney we've seen what he could do with a lumber journey a little leather right here watch this again Brett didn't quite know what to do with it the ball played him then he had to hurry the throw and threw so versatile comfort [Applause] now the secret here the ball bounced on the grass far enough away from Carew that he made it just like a regular routine huh and there it is here's Larry boy Louis two for two [Applause] this year alone Winfield has spent more than $20,000 for tickets for underprivileged youngsters they're the ones who sit out there in Winfield's pavilion out of the University of Minnesota sought-after in three different sports tremendous man that Dave wins it action in the American League bullpen right-hander Jim Colonel the Cleveland Indians and play by the right fielder till 11 so nationally gone one through three after six a 3-3 tie this can't you're coming out pretty soon and that will be now Rose concepciĆ³n Morgan there's I mentioned yeah mention that dad remember a boom I do troit Tigers honor and son ended up with a Milwaukee Braves ray made the American League team in 54 in 56 now his son Bob dollars with tools and he'll go back behind the plate and they'll face freddy Pontic you'll eat it off out on deck is Larry Hisle of the Milwaukee Brewers [Applause] or 1/2 pot there [Applause] top team up pal that'll be out of play Bob Boone will hit in the eighth spot [Applause] good breaking pitch by finger [Applause] down swimming that is the fifth National League strikeout and here comes Larry Hisle hottest player in the American League just named player of the week 4 home runs 8 RBIs against the Yankees or the 3 agent who's coming through there's so many have fallen by the wayside directed by pressure threats all the rest of it but not high in that vein I talked with Larry Hisle and he's very expressive about the matter I've just talked about is Larry you're one of the players who has succeeded as a free agent that much is already clear others have fallen prey to the pressures put upon them how come you have it are you know I've been trying to figure it out for a long time being a free agent believe me is more pressure than I've ever thought I could cope with but for some reason when I get on the field maybe it's because late my career I've been able to adjust the pressure too sometimes when the situation is needed to play hard I've been able to give my best I think maybe that's the reason but believe me I realize what free agents have gone through in the past and it's no joy now there's Larry Hisle on first place you saw him what single eyeball it to the hole that concepciĆ³n made a good play took all the speed of eiffel going down the line to beat it out here's his former teammate at Minnesota Rod Carew [Applause] here's the base hit by Larry Hisle as concepciĆ³n went deep to the hole look at that strong throw one hop to Garvey and ISIL just did beat it that's the kind of play because the boys a base hit you don't think about after a game is over but in its execution it was a remarkable play and there are some who think concepciĆ³n is the best all-around athlete in the National League many baseball scouts feel just that way well he can play there's no question about that they kept you on one note of as set a all-star game record with two consecutive triples in the first and third inning he scored two runs in he bounced to short this next time it's been so he is 2 for 3 we've got he's onside we've emphasized many times the Kuro is the man of shifting stance that's how he produces the most out of himself in terms of batting effective switching positions within the batter's box Garvey chicken tipsy own for one [Applause] Rock guru as Don Zimmer's moved back over to first base pulling that breaking pitch Garvey to the hole putting it off he goes quartz Etzion and the relay back not quite in time as to rule fooled you with his speed now that will bring on George Brett who is two for two he doubled in the first that score to run he had a sacrifice fly into third to drive in another and he singled in the fifth [Applause] the American leg is gone [Music] now rams owner has no heirs and they leave nobody as we go to the last of the seven three three tower listen up to important ballgame where they've shifted their way through what about half the roster I guess and from here on they're going to be a little more selective in the people you're choosing as we see Jim Curran now the big right-hander from the Cleveland Indians all mouth and big right-hander is and he can throw some heat is Reggie Smith doesn't get the fastball we get some more action out in the National League bullpen and it appears that that is right-hander Bruce Souter of the Chicago Cubs check swing foul [Applause] and the American League bullpen they're the two Yankees rich Gossage the right-hander Ron Guidry the left-hander or what a start Guidry had 13 in a row now thirteen and one going to the all-star game but this big gag turn he can turn it loose a record is six and three seven say [Applause] 1 & 2 we got the Kansas City and Peele on the left side with bread and pop tech their other half on the right side is white of Kansas City and Peru of the Minnesota Twins the outfield [Applause] in field of the American labor right white is playing at second base and swift goes down swing Hey Gogebic burn can bring up some heat the app feel all from the Boston Red Sox Jim Rice and we're 48 in Center probe Dwight Evans in right fear there's and there is evidence Larry Sorenson was tremendously impressive work three innings allowed only one hit mrs. P throw [Music] [Applause] now we're getting down to a time in the ball game where the managers start thinking a little bit on ending this thing did maybe trying to steal a run somewhere along the line good morning you see Don Zimmer and the beach ball I'm going to fear we're in the right location take another look at them I swallowed the beach ball so did I now a quarter right Tommy his wife Joe is here down the right-field line we have davey lopes to the Dodgers and Ron Cey of the Dodgers loosening up Sir Tom Lasorda might make a change [Applause] there's lopes the bottom of your stream say at the top [Applause] one ball one strike one out of three three tie 1 & 2 [Applause] eight rows coming into this game moment you say 25 game hitting streak adding green ideas you can see during that street [Applause] two and two [Applause] as we look down to left-field wine walking into the [Applause] down towards the American League dugout Bruce suitors so he might be coming on and taking over for Raleigh fingers there's Bruce standing along the sidelines thing is really did a job it's like it was back in the old Oakland title days get it back in the top there for this coming to centerfield camera [Applause] resting it right girl like field foul line into the cart go technically even if LD don't show it he's dead 26 straight that's right and we have a runner now for Pete Rose at second base the Dodgers Davey Lopes will go in and run for it here's Joe Morgan [Applause] yo Morgan a chance to stand alone in the consecutive game hitting streak [Applause] Morgan tonight is over to that struck out walked and scored and popped the shore [Applause] they sit right here and he bypasses Mickey Mantle I'll tell you one thing they better keep an eye on Davy Lopes he had a jump and a half off of that bag at second base he fought dick trying to keep him close in turn giving him a double look he looked over saw her do balls and no strikes to Morgan Brett back behind the bag at third you see PopTech now is cheating a little bit to his left he was not over there to start with there's a third baseman Bret and he's got to get a good jump for that catcher behind the plate Jim Sundberg he's got a gun here's Evan let's see if he challenges his arm and no sir words around on mr. doe [Applause] no right fielder but no right fielder in baseball positions himself better for the forthcoming throat as he awaits the ball than Dwight Evans [Applause] we've seen him make some plays on a secret to his arm there are people who can throw even harder than Dwight although he's got a great and powerful arm Billy Martin going to the mound and he will chat with fern Frank white and Jim Sundberg of course Billy managed Sundberg at Texas [Music] [Applause] you've got the hitter George Foster you've got first base open foster an excellent fastball hitter and the man hitting in the sport fourth spot the way the lineup has turned over it's the pitcher spot that is Rowley fingers we've already seen Bruce Souter go into the National League dugout it appears that he will come on and take over four fingers so Tommy Lasorda undoubtedly will go to the bench and we'll see what happens here that's the story draw 3-3 tie to ops and the National League seven [Applause] foster tonight is over - he walked in a third and store [Applause] uncle fingers George it almost George Foster says wait a minute now let me just gauge that thing one more time [Applause] we had a pretty good riff that he is a frightening head well the cannon ball and a strike would throughout we go ahead run out at second base in the Dodgers Davey Lopes and he can motor there's Davey [Applause] and of course with two outs he'll be going on anything they won't take any chances they just saw that swing and said why are we doing this [Music] who's over there the I bet in this guy [Applause] that's ball three outside Wilbur Stargell is over there oh that's all you might say that big number eight come out of that National League dugout we'll wait and see [Applause] Wilbur Stargell me yesterday Kissin hard after I said how far have you hit a ball here he said well we had a workout one day and he said I was just playing around just really trying to see how far I get jack'd 1 he said I managed to clear the scoreboard one time that's all well you sit here San Diego State I mean look at that scoreboard out there that takes a whole bunch of power to clear that thing only Trump over the story is I don't believe no I already I double checked on Stargell coming on hitting 390 on the year he has 15 home runs in her 40 RBI [Applause] [Music] he points to the left arm now this is where Martin Foote Lasorda in the spot and of course Tom Lasorda can turn around and he can switch right here if he wants to he can go to Jeff Burroughs who bit of a long ball thread itself just a bit right now we have a pitching change and let's go down to Bob Uecker in his gift 1049 at the largest is Wilbur Stargell this will be power to power [Applause] davey lopes the tiebreaking run at second base George Foster is it first base 3-3 tie in the national league 6th inning [Applause] more than one again [Applause] I'll never forget the exhibition he put on at Shea Stadium I think that was about 1964 he just kept hitting them off of that scoreboard in Shea Stadium each one was higher for the shin guard somebody's got a play and he rounded the bag Tanner was way c'mon it was George Brett and Guidry remembered what he had to do right dimensions dojo and his home run capacity as we looked at this again right off the shin guard watch no heel of the glove the heel of the glove and bounced over that ball seemed like it might have taken off a little bit on Sundberg a now Jimmy very alertly getting on that ball or look for the score that is a pass ball two and one to go Korean would say state him a favorite ballpark and start go Kazuma thing done sake at the first home run ever hit at chase day [Applause] get Stargell go right to the wall the count three balls in his right Lopes at third with cluster at second in a 3-3 tie [Applause] Turner it's playable does that member create an asteroid is our and we'll be back with more of the 1978 all-star game after this word from our local station third baseman that is Ron Cey the second baseman who ran four feet roars is Davey look at the shortstop Davey concepciĆ³n still in short there's Lopes a second baseman right now we go to the eighth inning of play and Keith away Jack Clark is in right field on San Francisco Giants fine young player who submits much to them this year but we're looking right now at Bruce Souter as he's pitching to George Brett and he has him at 1 & 2 with that funny split finger pitch that he fences and does so well with well they're going to pitch from him above the knees it's a victory [Music] Brett beaches on the ground you get some great camera shots here from our guys on that centerfield camera to watch that ball go down that Souter store the pit just before the last one here that are rich Bow Wow that's really the bottom fell out of that it was unbelievable [Applause] Davey Lopes will be hitting in the number one spot the leadoff wife this is mrs. Bruce Souter there Thomas order a niggling his roster around keep speed at the top it looks s rolling on the ground he goes to his teammate Steve Garvey and $1 3/4 of the infield Dodgers will say Lopes and Garvey and concepciĆ³n at shortstop the cups collapsed there a year ago the latest stages in the pennant race cost rate was directly to the injury to suitor and Frank this manage it doesn't ever stop talking about Bruce Jim Rice up racing Souter now takes high ball one that's the first pitch he had look at that [Applause] it look at that thing again watch the bottom fallout of this [Applause] Suter named the National League Player of the Week for the July 3rd through the 9th period pitched in five games did not for me to run five saves about four hits they did in this cookout that [Applause] Jim Rice homerun ball as he lucid for him over the last now it's wasted tactic he's heading trip [Applause] stretch his legs every three ballgame where the top of the eighth inning for the American League and Souter was just struck out [Applause] a second time tonight I'm able to strike out rice swinging well there goes the bottom again watch it's all out of this pitch - Melissa they think they yell with me here's Dwight Evans Red Sox outfielder hitting 286 his next one will be his career-high [Applause] there's a quick worker - that's how that's the second pitch he's gotten up belt ah heavy Sundberg on deck [Applause] boxes two and one I suspect that the suitor and fingers got to be among the quickest workers both of them just take the ball through a Becket was really well played all stalking it's a good played game as faith is quickened ever since the national league achieved the tie [Applause] took over fingers and Sorenson very effective suitor now at 3 + 1 11 3 & 2 [Applause] in the late innings you can see Ron Cey the third baseman he's just about a big giant step off the line he's guarding a line against the extra-base hit they're given a single through the hole but even concepciĆ³n is swung over [Applause] we could set you up to seven degrees children this Saturday on ABC and on July 22nd 23rd will have the US Women's Open from the Country Club of Indiana which the goose gusset is on now two three one errand run average one loss record for the s12 saves and Greg Nettles the Yankees has now gone to third he now here a sore toe and didn't expect him to play sharp is in their left field you have Chet lemon of the Chicago White Sox this is a good one although the changes for the American League defensively with Steve Garvey standing at the plate baby concepciĆ³n was on deck Garvey fouls it away and it's one and one [Applause] Marie has knocked in two runs tonight for the National League swings and misses just wanted to do nobody throwed in Ottoman Gossage generally speaking he's been about what the Yankees expected when they paid all that money form in the free agent market buck is developing a distressing habit for the Yankees of throwing a homerun ball [Applause] ricochets back Steve Garvey stands at third remember we talked about garbey power to the opposite field [Applause] gobby as we look at this in again is the key offensive player in the game since single the bases loaded tied the game for the National League and a good hustling play by the right-field umpire Larry McCoy who was out there to call it and Garvey didn't take it for granted he was running on the way so the leadoff man stands at third Aurel dimensionally daily concepts you they wouldn't be in the on-deck circle opportunity here for the National League to break the tie in the bottom of the eighth-inning [Applause] the Cincinnati shortstop will have a brief moment with Chuck Tanner who's coaching at third base for the National League the extra inning games there have been seven the National League is one all of the extra right now big opportunity to break the tile it almost gets away it is flagged down by Sundberg and that's an apt description blank and he can do that Keith with the best of me I'll tell you there's not too many hockey goalies that can bounce around as well is Jimmy silver look at that you think that isn't a tough pitch to handle oh brother there's an all-star play [Applause] or to the concepciĆ³n [Applause] that's it [Applause] coming into the ballgame immediately what's that ball the year becoming law [Applause] well there was a cave right there of Goffe just trying to throw it as far as you can he's not even close and Sundberg as concepciĆ³n say let's go no play at the plate the National League leads 4-3 I would say a very good candidate for MVP right now become Steve Darnell question he offensive player of the game work [Applause] wouldn't be away after the league has won 14 out of 15 they've won six in a row and here's a home run hitter they would feel you carry you to all fields and you can see what he has done is it's June 10 or three and actually breaking the tie we have a four [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] made the turn at second he knew it was a base hit it bounced away went to serve in feel what fling all the way to second a nationally would a chance to break it open when filled at second in concepciĆ³n occurred and nobody out and run is in it's a single in an error on lemon [Applause] nobody out and here's Bob boom [Applause] a chapter from the Philadelphia Phillies [Applause] some birds get the workout passage while since coming in and here comes Herzog to the bow there's mrs. concepciĆ³n and son interesting that Billy sent whitey out this done it is interesting and I would have to think that way here's August and hey now let's stop and think a little bit just don't stand out here just throw this thing as hard as you can and not have any idea who let's have some kind of an idea as you see Flanagan of the Baltimore Orioles throwing in the American League bullpen [Applause] that's just outside if Steve Garvey gets the MVP it won't be the first time as we look at 41 Tommy Siva warming up in the National League bullpen it was strike team won the commissioners trophy ill recollect Keith back in 74 here he's got a write-in belt [Applause] [Music] to the plate six four three [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] - miss miss trophy the one we were just talking about and the American League has to be snake better as I looked at lyric found not presently visible on a free downcast expression American legged gotten off to it three to nothing lead in this one remember when Jim bomb a blow in the third in Ron Cey is at the plate Dow facing and uh feeds and they're super chicken having himself a time I [Applause] two balls no strikes to the bathroom third baseman playing third base for nationally Ostara [Applause] or it doesn't make any difference how hard you throw if you get behind and then have to come in there these guys can hit it that was the play and Greg gets it [Applause] let's finally get one out it was really jammed with this trying to hole up and then send a little chopper down and he can't get out of the box down in the dirt you want to take a right there and run right over to cut down get a seat Bobby Jon is now joined Tom Seaver as a National League Ken my clinica in the American League then [Applause] baby look the clip therefore trying to the place [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and this pitch is in on and baby just kind of inside-out the ball that has been Justin's a little fleur to right-field Evans had to get over by the time the ball got to him and he got to the ball he had no chance to get thrown the ball was caught off the hopes of first and no move right now by the American League management to make a change with Mike Flanagan in the bullpen or Oreo left fender well it has to be a simply dreadful experience for doctors look at Martin happening to his own kitchen [Applause] Clark swings and misses Billy fields snakebit everything going wrong from the kid outside [Applause] here's a good-looking young bulb they're right here in Jack Clark at a San Francisco giant he is come on and come into his own and he can be around for a while strike and it's 1 & 2 what out it's at first base [Applause] runs across for seven to three national lately Bart is gone that's too Garvey and Lesotho senator or God sugar what Don Drysdale very some of our delegates and dodge affluent dominated tonight offensively and it certainly manifested itself is a George Foster god bless for [Applause] it might be awesome to see foster connect with a Gossage fastball on the but cowboy well you look at Davey Lopes at first base his stats on attempted steel and successful steals [Applause] respect I think he's got 25 in a row he might have something like that first time and took off two and one the George [Applause] two out there goes a pro either come down by sunburn and you look at it again baby won't believe he's out [Applause] but he is sandy house 73 nationally 73 the National League the American League coming to bat in the top of the ninth inning and Jason Thompson first baseman for the Detroit Tigers is at the plate another one of the brilliant young players in baseball and Detroit will have this horse around to pull the wagon for quite a while he had a home run at Yankee Stadium recently as the bowels went off that I simply couldn't believe it just kept going and going and going straight up into the center field teeth was reminiscent of the kind of blow Mickey Mantle used to hit he's out at the San Fernando Valley all over Los Angeles when school at Cal State Northridge rooo suitor on the mound the Chicago Cubs brilliant right-hander he's now become the pitcher of record rich Gossage the pitcher of record for the American League it is a big 7 to 3 lead all the Nationals here in the top of the ninth-inning Gus is charged with four runs Thompson strokes into right-center way back drifting over making the catch George Foster all the carriers those the voter fight becomes heavy ball here in San Diego teeth as breakfast night wears on John and I discussed it in an earlier game we had here well that's very true at the start of this ball game the ball has a tendency to carry well-bred land it's a high and deep to left center field over his swing field conveying in another ballpark or do you think that is of the Green Monster in some way yet the people standing on their feet there here comes Darrell Porter now out of the dugout with a bat and the city catcher well it's alright for the American League to keep saying an all-star game is not a test of league strength it's alright to the American League ooh Billy Martin this time around to say of the World Series is the real thing in perfect truth as we look at daum Licata come out to talk to his pitcher and this gadget probably need is a real test of the respective strength of the league but when you lose 15 a sorta brings in atlanta right-hander knuckleballer Phil Niekro well I think Keith right here what Tom Lasorda did the people saw him walk out talk to Bruce Souter and I'm sure that Tommy said hey you want to finish it if you want to finish it you can stay right here if you don't want to finish if you don't mind me bringing in me crow here's a man that's getting up in age he's been on an all-star squad before but he's only pitched one inning there's Tommy Lasorda Chuck Tanner laughing they're on the winning side he said I'll I'll bring him in and I you saw Bruce Souter shrug and shake his heads and no I don't care and so here's another man that gets a chance to see some active playing an all-star game so the veteran knuckleballer who's flirting with 40 will be pitching to Darrell quarter [Applause] I'll tell you if he gets his dancer going on he can just let were you up he does not goes in the air all night long with that thing ball one Eddie Murray's in the on-deck-circle quarter hits a high in the air anyone say comes in in over most valuable player right there in the middle year Street he'll be back for the presentation in just a few moments virus or National League seven really American League three back after this message and the word from our local station every shot
