who asked muhammad ali to retire he said an interesting thing he said yes i think ali has retired but he admitted that muhammad ali may have financial problems and he indicated that ollie had spent the ken norton purse before he even received it i want to show you some highlights from the 15th round in just a moment but first how about the new england patriots would you believe it 48 to 17 the dumps the giants 27-21 giants still winless there's the score again 48-17 new england goes to detroit next week now buffalo got 50 points and 130 yards out o.j simpson they route kansas city 45 for cincinnati four touchdown passes for kenny anderson 45-24 chicago beats washington 33-7 you all come to the super bowl chicago and new england this year and philadelphia beats atlanta by a score of 14-13 charlie smith with 4 21 caught the winning touchdown pass from mike barilla as you can imagine the world of boxing was thrown into a turmoil this week with that announcement by muhammad ali in istanbul turkey that he had retired particularly in the heavyweight division so we have invited the two most successful fight promoters in the world into our studios today on my right hand side bob aaron and over here on my left is don king and don the first question everyone wants answered is whether or not ali is sincere is he finished as a fighter well first you must understand muhammad ali i think muhammad ali is a unique and extraordinary type of individual and every time that he says something he really means what he says you know so it's not like he's unstable or that his credibility is he's a kind of artist that performs for the people he's a people's like champion and at the time that he said that i'm certain that he really meant that he's going to retire bob do you agree with that do you think that muhammad ali meant it when he said it well i sure agree with that statement now but the ultimate question is will muhammad ali retire and nobody really knows he's been the greatest champion in the history of boxing a lot of people hope that he doesn't retire if he wants to retire obviously it's his decision he's given the sport everything he has but i'm inclined to believe that ultimately muhammad ali will not retire all right well let's say for a moment theoretically that he has retired let me show you footage from what would be his last fight now we're going to pick it up in the 15th round cbs covered this fight you'll be able to see it in its entirety the night of october 22nd keep one thing in mind this is late in the 15th round muhammad ali appeared to have taken charge early in the 15th but as we came down the stretch then ken norton became the aggressor you can see the time left in the round we come inside of 30 seconds in my opinion and i think everyone else this was the strongest part of the 15th round for one kenny norton and don and bob i know you were both at ringside so you noticed the same thing that i did that as soon as the fight ended ken norton was absolutely certain that he had taken the crown away from muhammad ali now focus in on kenny norton what he does first of all he is going to insult muhammad ali at the conclusion of this round then watch and see what he does following that he'll go over to his corner jump into the arms of his handler there is you see he thought that he had won the fight no question about it now i've got to tell you that both don and bob have told me that they agree with the decision they thought muhammad ali wanted don let me propose this if muhammad ali has retired ken norton and george foreman would fight for the heavyweight championship that seems like the way it would be but that is not the way i would propose it to be i have declared george foreman heavyweight champion of the world now this is not by not an arbitrary or ego trip this is something that is substantiated by effect george foreman knocked out ken norton in two rounds in caracas venezuela he knocked out joe frazier twice he has proven beyond a doubt that he's the most forbiddable formidable and awesome guy out there so i feel that he should fight ken norton but it should be george foreman champion ken norton challenger bob would you agree with that should we just give the heavyweight title to george foreman you don't give the heavyweight title to anybody whether kenny norton or muhammad ali won that fight in the opinion of people everybody in the nation will see on october 22nd it was a very controversial fight no question muhammad ali won because the officials scored it for muhammad ali whether the american public and the world public agrees they will have to make their decision on october 22nd but assuming that ali now retires what i think should happen and i believe what the boxing associations believe should happen is that ken norton and george foreman should fight for the vacant heavyweight championship of the world rhetoric won't solve this don has his own opinions i have mine the better man will win when these two great fighters ken norton and george foreman fight for the vacant heavyweight title if ali in fact is retired bob and don both thank you very much and again chicago a winner a man puts many things in his automobile gasoline it has been around the nfl so long that both of us played against it and you know there's a crew cut under that helmet i know you marl he's got a son who's a monster and quite a football player too an offensive tackle pat can you believe that the rushing statistics would be like this 170 for miami with malone with 94 and the rams have only 65. had to throw so much 164 yards passing 29 for miami that's 19 passes the rams have thrown in the first half that's half a season usually for them the way they rush the football of course keep in mind again that miami for the most part has been playing with a five-man front a five-man defensive line designed to shut off that run tom gerdin and light scales back deep for los angeles and of course gary premium to kick off and also keep in mind that the rams play the second half like it's world war three they have been overpowering in the fourth quarter particularly premium hits a good one scale at the goal line and he swings to his right and now back to the left hit by mandic and scales gets out of bounds and after all that running got only back to about the 13-yard line they're gonna have to tell the rookie to stop fooling around with that bring it up get to the wedge try to get it to the 30-yard line and then bail out let's see if the rams have done some x's and o's on that chalkboard at halftime and have come up with a way to to block the five-man front and figure out when the darn dolphins are in it maybe that's the big confusion looks like it's gonna be a four-man front this time that's exactly what it is three line packers but they're over shifted still the same offensive set up for the los angeles rams james harris still the quarterback and he gets back to mccutcheon kind of finds the running room can't make it tackled by charlie babb who takes him out of bounds actually the rams would probably be better off to go ahead and block it like it's a five and and block that linebacker that stands up and just consider him a defensive end and go ahead and sweep that way and block it like it's an overshifted five and stop trying to make it maybe more difficult than it really is one other interesting statistic on second and eight now for los angeles of the first half this is is the fact that the nfc's leading rusher john capilani had only three carries and picked up only 10 yards it will be second and eighth the ball at the 15 of los angeles in the opening seconds of period number three fake the capillary harris throws tip one of the dolphins got a hand on it burns in herder the six foot six inch defensive end and bonucconi might have intercepted that had been hurt or not knocked it down harris just sort of lobbed that one down the middle and doesn't look like he's really in control right now third pick john williams one of the underrated tackles number 75 right there [Applause] the story on third down conversions in both of those as a matter of fact they're pretty good look how long this third down conversion is that's the problem back there with him and fires he's got the cutting mccutchen swings down the middle outside the 40 and of course it's ram first down lawrence mccutchen has done it all for the rams so far and he comes out of nowhere he'll come to the left of your screen and watch gordon look for him number 50 and all of a sudden 30's in there running flat free and everybody begins to scrape and backhoe as they say well he is some kind of an athlete at least they surrounded him mccutchen caught four passes in the first half alone that's number five he just caught his first down ran ball at their own 41-yard line [Applause] the dolphins got confused on how many men they had on the field and had to take a timeout in order to avoid a five-yard penalty they had one too many that's when you know your defense is really mixing them up right when you pull yourself a couple of times it looks like they've gotten away with 12 men on the field [Applause] that's next sunday the nfl on cbs the giants will open their new stadium in the hack at meadows against the dallas cowboys st louis will be against philadelphia in philadelphia atlanta and new orleans chicago battles minnesota and seattle against green bay that's all in regional broadcast nfl next sunday on cbs how about chicago against minnesota we wouldn't even consider that game that part he's got that bunch really knocking people minnesota's got to play pittsburgh between now and then and chicago just demolished washington today so that game takes a little extra character first down straight ahead for nothing maybe a yard there's tall look at him he claims he's gotten the football and he is mad now he's a broadcast major from k.u he ought to be able to make his point look at it yeah i guess he did tell you one thing if he comes to the studio i let him have the mic broadcast with me when he wants to he's getting the really split the underside of that zone and even gets a convoy as harold jackson the roadrunner takes it in too 58-yard touchdown pass from james harris to ron jesse did i say the throw was on he did it should have been because it was really an excellent play by everybody barry hill the dolphin safety man overplayed it just a little bit 87 yards that drive to the five slaves and now dempsey with steve priest holding they've had problems with the extra point and a field goal but this one's good and that'll make it the miami dolphins 14. the los angeles ran seven we have 13 minutes and seven seconds left in the third period a lot of football left they find that gods tough football player is going to have to be helped off the field and by the way you'll see you'll notice one thing here and that is the officials will always give the medical people all the time they want to take care of an injury i remember one you know which one i'm thinking of paul when you were work playing for the san diego chargers when alan the linebacker broke his leg out there do you remember that one i went to the sidelines i i just couldn't believe it he was uh good football he's up with seattle with seattle seahawks right now let's talk about lou holt's head coach of the of the jets right here i chatted with him before the game paul told you that he has a five-year contract and what they say a lot of a lot of football players go from college to the pros and holts is trying to make the pros act like college players now with regard to their dedication and work and he he said he wants people who uh who act like his rookies are acting out here told us the rookies are playing better for him than the veterans are he said there's something wrong when that is the situation well you know the jets really surprised me because everything that you heard about him coming into this game jack has been uh they're one of the worst teams in the national football league and the way they're playing football this afternoon the people in new york have got to be very proud of this football team they came out here the chances that they had to win if you talk about coming in first or second they didn't even have a chance to come in third and the jet fans will have their first chance to see their team at home during the regular season next sunday when buffalo plays there and buffalo won big today so uh halts has uh a lot of work in front of him along with his staff got him out of bounds davis striking down the far sideline on a fine return for miami he said look he's a rookie from cal poly rookie from cal poly i watch him go up put the ball away very very nicely at firm and now he cuts it to the right side now watch tom dempsey make his second tackle of the day watch number 10 come along get him thomas all right 42 yard return by davis the dolphins have the ball at their own 45 yard line ryan jesse by the way has four catches for 134 yards and harris ran quarterback 11 to 22 for 258 yards right now it's bob greasy in the spotlight though as benny malone comes to the outside he broke one tackle [Applause] this game is a tough tough tough way to make a living a lot of glamour associated with it but when you go down and you get hurt why it offsets a lot of the pictures in the paper and other thrills that the players get from performing in this game there's mrs mcgill going to ride the ambulance with her husband it has confirmed that that is his wife so honor the stretcher and into the ambulance and who knows we might even be watching the end of a football career for a very enthusiastic performance let's hope that's not the case when the ball came loose paul any when that ball's rolling around why anything goes right well i thought it was a late hit to start with but i hadn't realized the ball had come loose and you know at that point the ball was fumbled hennigan alert hennigan is alert and he sees the ball now you see it right here now look at mcgill there's clark gaines number 21 he's also in on the play but watch right here there's the ball going down hannigan sees the ball and all he's doing right now is just diving for the football and it just so happens that his head hit mcgills right there paul am i right when we saw him on the stretcher there was apparently nothing wrong with his legs right yeah what they you know it's something to the upper torso but we won't venture any further guess with that we'll just lay off the guesses all together you know what i do like to see is that they take all the precautions in the world and they just you know don't rush out and let's let's uh you know the players let's go help a guy off the field let the physicians do it and let everybody else worry about it later on we have a an updated score as james harris has hit ron jesse with a 58-yard scoring pass to put the rams on the board and the rams now trail miami 14-7 with 13 minutes left in the third watch number 64 now the ball is coming right over his shoulder and twilly is watching first hacksaw in the ball if i was 20 right now i just worry about hacksaw uh boy i don't know that's close i think fully had a chance to catch the ball and i think more like a foot but we'll call it second and a very very short one the indication from jim tunney and his fine crew of officials that include pat harder pearl toller bob mcelwee pat knight charlie musser second and short look out for this one malone gets the call and got the dolphin first down down close to the pin [Applause] brooks getting up from underneath the pile i'd imagine you'll find youngblood down there somewhere too and axolotls that would figure does that fit him alone uh just a little bit bowlegged and a little bit quick to go along with it believe we get a shot of him go back to the huddle here in a minute when we get it back on this side it looks like one of his feet might fly off any minute it looks like a human egg beater when he comes down the field the main thing about him is that he's active and he's got a lot of herky jerky motion and tough to tackle number 32 it is first down yardage by bennie malone and the dolphins have the ball at the los angeles 11 yard line the jets and san francisco in the third period the score is nothing nothing by far the best effort so far by the jets they were shut out by miami last week right here first and ten miami on the los angeles 11. gracie's gonna go and he's got lots of room down to just shy of the one-yard line five years ago he would have challenged those tacklers pat the main thing is if you go too early you're in trouble and you go too late you're in trouble and he knows just about linda's act like he's throwing it and now go it's the second rushed in by the defense and now he knows that he's really really pushing it now they want him so bad to stand up he got very close to a first down yardage jackson and perry made the tackle i know what the odds are for a quarterback to run three or four times against the rams and get away with it kind of getting all the kicks out of the chain now made it look easy and now they come back with a good return and bob gracie has them moving and they are in control again second and inches the situation [Applause] ball's at the two-yard line just inside that we have 10 minutes and 41 seconds left third period the dolphins lead the rams 14-7 [Applause] but he did get the first down at about the half yard line you've got olson and you've got cody jones hacksaw reynolds panning brooks that's an average of about 268 or 270 per that's right in the middle of that ram defensive line bob greasy [Music] andre tillman to the top of your screen the big tight end and larry little leads him through the hole look at that look at 66. that is jim youngblood that he just shadowed all right save play different view good block by foolish too look at that little wow blows him right out of the hole a 55-yard drive climax by that one yard run by drop off and there's a back that you have to cover you've got to take him you can't get too far back beyond the line you know behind the first down so you can make that play you got to force him right away just come right up on on the back going on the back especially on third down it's a first down now from the 21. and it is williams he made contact and then slid inside for pretty good yardage four yards second and six coming up 210 remaining in the third period that batted pass is the one that might do the jets in washington goes to the right willie mcgee comes left the tight end is mitchell he's on the left side this time second down and six williams again and the whole closed in a hurry is that gallagher got to him with richard neal in on the action boy gallagher is strong and fast he was back to the inside moving down the line going towards the off tackle position when he saw johnson cut back to the inside he made the tackle just a good play williams has run for 50 yards and 15 carries at his third down and three he threw in this spot a while back look it did this is a delay to sandy johnson and it'll be fourth down so not necessarily a very popular call at the orange bowl but it's just as good as if they recovered it they think they should have it and the feeling is hey look what we just did they did they didn't give it to us but by guys we showed him who his boss now watch scales he decides to stay behind the wedge this time no fooling around and watch these people in the those marine green jerseys come through there yeah it's down it's legal they kick it out right there and go after it james harris takes over from the offensive unit first and ten 9 37 left third period the ball for ram 24. and harris says i can't hear across the blue and the crowds delighted that's exactly what they wanted there are no extra seats around here today about 68 70 000 on hand at the orange bowl to watch the rams it's a natural rivalry los angeles in miami let's face it you're not they just don't give away the best oranges all of it no the jets were here last week they complained and complained about the heat lou holt said he hadn't practiced in a day over 70 degrees course he got shut out 16 to nothing i know miami has better oranges in new york oh yeah and again [Applause] the crowd at the orange bowl and harris sets his offensive unit down [Applause] perhaps trying to call it audible he gives mccutcheon crushing was chased behind the line of scrimmage got away from a couple attackers and two or three more john andrews had a chance behind the line of scrimmage larry gordon finally made the tackle and it looks like against that 5-2 that somebody's pulling and nobody's sealing down that that interior alignment and mccutcheon is probably going to be the one that says hey fellas do we know what defense they were in because that's like getting run over at a railroad crossing he got eight yards most of it on his own second second [Applause] touching again trying to sweep behind harrah got the first down hit by toll i believe the middle linebacker watch him again watch this pursuit watch charlie babb come on by tall a little linebacker look at that toll knock people out of the way then the jayhawker gets some help by bam cutting the playback inside and barry's touching he's a pretty active young linebacker i'll say mccutchen's carried 10 times now for 53 yards and he is coming closer and closer to replacing dan cowler as the second leading ram rusher of all time dick bass is number one on first down harris takes and harris fires he's got jackson jackson dances away from a couple he's got a first down in miami territory and again it's steve toe who made the tackle [Applause] little harold jackson to the top of your screen is so fast that he backed kenny ellis way off and ellis knows he's got that 4-3 speed for the 40. so then he just hooks it back up i actually think harold could have either flown if he had the chance or hooked it up i believe that was an option for him not now harris waited that's his biggest gain of the day like about a six or seven yard pickup before bill stanfill and steve tolle again made the tackle that's only the fourth carry of the afternoon for john capoletti and one of the things that john is learning right now is what experience is all about they're facing first some guys that have been in a couple of super bowls or so and they're seeing some different defenses so pretty young team has a little bit of trouble second and four seven minutes now left in the third period miami 21 los angeles seven mccutcheon behind mack cuts all the way back and he is taken down by andrew and larry gordon i believe in the pursuit watch gordon chase him now watch as everybody pulls the block and they forget the guy they're trying to block for mccutchen decides to cut back and all his friends have gone and gordon was a good tackle they say he makes mistakes gordon i mean but they also say he learns rapidly bringing back unused portion he does a pretty good job yes he does [Applause] third and four the dolphins have five defensive backs in the game bryant salter the extra one catholic harris on a quarterback draw and he might have taken too much time that's what it is the man is a down field the official it's downfield it's in charge of that 30-second clock of course it's easy to see this year too much time because there's a clock at both ends of the orange pole all the stadiums have these now that indicates to the fans as well as to us that they have 30 seconds to get underway i'm wondering if maybe the dolphins are playing a game of signals and changing their defenses after the rams have flashed out their offensive signal maybe could be right now they've got the extra defensive back in there brian salter san francisco three the new york jets nothing now in the fourth quarter in san francisco 31-yard field goal [Applause] third and long and again the conversion on third down depends on how much your third down is four this is always playing wrong facing the rams just this day they've got jesse in the backfield again mccutcheon is out yes he pushed are you like me crazy about cars he works fine you know that machine of yours the camera with weekend sports quarterback steve grogan engineered the route by running for two scores and throwing for three more two td passes went to darrell stingley the third to marlon briscoe patriot fullback sam cunningham ran for 101 yards and caught five passes for 94 yards the patriots are three and one oakland lost its first game in four starts the much improved chicago bears socked it to the old little boat he might look next to it we have a snake plant really hard to kill as the bears handed the redskins their first loss the bear now i'm mentioning this brother a little north of 137th street delafield provided you bet yeah and louis giamona at the top of your screen okay pat knight and there's jesse reaching for the ball now pat knight is the official watch this and he sees those feet go together there and if the ball is in control and he says it is it's a touchdown and the arms go right up dempsey kicks a high kick in the direction of winfrey he decides to let it go and davis finally picks it up and davis looks down shy of the 20 yard line and a flag goes down looks like flipping against miami and they are going to start from deep and it's going to take another greasy drive to sort of set the rams back and his holding called against the dolphins whatever suddenly the impetus has changed to the guys in the golden blue a little bit we still got plenty of time five minutes and 49 seconds left in the third period yet and it's 21-14 miami over los angeles holding against the dolphin and the rams seem to get it going they're you know they're they're like a big machine they begin to labor a little bit early and they don't do things right but by the fourth period when they find out what you're doing if they can decide they can play pretty good football the fourth period at least so far this season has been their quarter here's bob greasy on first down the ball
