comes out earlier and for the toss of the coin the Bears won the toss and so they'll be on offense first crisps bar then the Los Angeles Raiders will kick off Dennis gentry and Thomas Sanders will be back deep for the bears bears assured and already as a matter of fact have won the NFC Central Division but they still have that home-field advantage at stake throughout the playoffs they need a victory for that while the Redskins winning yesterday meant that the Bears have to win today if they want home-field in that first playoff game [Applause] just to bring you up to date Dallas now has gone ahead of the Cardinals 2113 that has to be I think because of the affection that the people in Dallas feel for Gene Stallings a game of mixed emotions Stallings for so many years the defensive backfield coach of the Cowboys now the head coach of the Cardinals and again the Cowboys would like to finish on the positive note but so with the Cardinals and get to the playoff the Vikings are routing of obviously for Dallas that's where the emotions aren't mixed bars kickoff is a little bit of the shank and Sanders comes up to about the 20 yard line where he takes it and gets out of bounds it's not within 24 Ron fellows on the stop this is Mike Tom sack we'll start at quarterback for the Bears in place of Jim McMahon the defense you'll be looking at includes the great how I long Malcolm Taylor in the middle and Sharon Jones at right end and they're three min front King Matt Millen Robinson and Martin the linebackers Washington and seal the corner backs and van McElroy and Stacy Koran the safeties both of them have had outstanding ear contact first of ten [Music] [Applause] and let's look at the bear offensive set up Tom's actor quarterback eight then Matsui starting place of Neal Anderson Galt and Morris the wide receivers up front go Janowski ports Jay Hillenburg playing hurt but playing Becker Keith van Horn the tight end Emery Moorehead second down and eight got to McKinnon now comes in to the offensive cancer [Music] he has seen very little action over the year stop by Jerry Robinson and got six yards over the left side you know one of those nine lineup changes we were talking about of course is Matsui in for Neil Anderson now Neal Anderson as the injury injured his knee last week and of course isn't active today and couldn't miss the playoff so that's why Matsui is back there Neal Anderson was the the big part of this bear offensive final score as Detroit beat Atlanta 32:13 and that so-called battle for who gets the first round draft choice Sooey [Applause] and the beers will act upon you see Walter Payton in that fakie made he went in there and dome up in here that's that's the things always made Walter make a great player he is watch him here on this play fake watch him al he sells out cells that goes up in the air takes that pounding but that's really what holds that deep that pass was deflected right at the line of scrimmage Tommy Barnhart back to kick and Chris Wood's back deep for the Raiders standing at his own 35 not a good kick one single spirit [Applause] the leading punt returner of their mark.wilson will be now the Los Angeles reader quarterback he'll be looking looking at this formidable bear defense al Harris taking the place of William Carey but playing left in Hampton moves inside McMichael up there with him and Richard dent the other end linebackers Ron Rivera in place of Otis Wilson Mike Singletary in the middle Wilbur Marshall on the other side in the secondary for East Douglas another change one of the quarterbacks along with besty Jackson Gary fencing starting there and Dave Duerson back there with him fencing season being idle [Applause] first they're gonna fool mark.wilson here but that was one of the reasons that Mike Ditka put worry stockless in there he said he wanted an aggressive guy he wanted someone will challenge those receivers he wants a guy who may make something happen he wants a guy who can maybe get a turnover and of course on the first play where recent Douglas comes up with a turnover the Chicago defense in 1985 well look at their interceptions well that's the thing that you can see where they're down at 34 31 this year they've only had 13 so what's been happening as the Bears have been given up the ball and they haven't been getting it back to haven't had to take over this is MacKinnon at the bottom of your picture now contact goes back to throw [Applause] Sam seal was the Raider cover man anytime you get Willie Gault out there I'll tell you those corners are going to be nervous well they call one of the fastest men in a uniform and football I'm sack looks a little jittery here you know I've always said that but when a quarterback is nervous you can tell because the ball will get away from him and usually go high he got too much adrenaline pumping Morris the motion man Tomczak back in the pocket jittery that time Stacy Teran on the cat that's the thing he tried to go to gold try to go to golf this time they used golf as a clean app that we'll see more as he comes across in motion that he's going to run across to the side that golf cleaned out when you get Morris with that speed on a safety he's going to win it this is what you have to have here once your protection they got two guys on the nose tackle bill Pakal there that's the way to get him keep him right on the line so you're quarterbacking step up banker and he'll convert locky Sooey the main emotion [Applause] sooo he's blocked for a gain of five how he longed to stop Jenna in talking to Mike Ditka last night he said I just got a feeling I don't have any statistical information to back it up I think that Tom Zach is better against a man-to-man that he is against the zone and the Raiders play for the most part man-to-man I agree with that and one of the things you get a quarterback who is not the patient quarterback will do better against man-to-man against any so you always have to be patient and that's not one of isotonic great great snack heavy pressure from the graders everybody it nobody nobody close he knew he was trying to go out to the left to Willie Gault again you'll see the pressure this time Pakal gets a pressure up the middle and now Tom sack feels that he just has to throw the ball away there were four Raider rushers very close to Cael long and others you know that he played before we saw with a they had four Kel double-team they kept him on the line that time if they did and that time he was the first guy that broke through that's what makes the quarterback bring the ball down third and five Dennis Gentry moves out to the left and the bears go with four wide receivers [Applause] fikret looked like more than dropped it he looked like he attacked it he looked like a linebacker coming out of blitz and hits a quarterback and it was the ball well you hear she'll bring it in you hear so many times about softer guy who has soft hands and passer has a soft soft throw neither one of those happen oh yeah Gentry looked like he was bad at the ball and so it's a punting situation for barn hockey woods in fact II better kick [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that's about where they'll market Thomas Sanders was demand down to make the stop 49-yard punt these are final scores now 32:13 and the Falcons will get the first round draft choice the Jets lost to the Giants 22 7 went from 14 to 14 and 2 to 6 and 9 little know if you beat Buffalo Kansas City put a dent in Seattle's hopes for playoff as they upset the Seahawks 41 to 20 or yards started up straight and then swung to the right stop by Douglas and the Singletary it was interesting Marcus Allen said last week after the Raiders lost it he didn't feel that his teammates played as hard as they should said there are some guys out there that have just given up when the season are dogging it and the interesting seeing that thing after that on Monday they voted him the most inspirational player on the team they believed what he said that's the kind of respect everyone has in their pocket as incomplete intended for Lofton for an NFL updates in let's go back to New York and Brent Musburger all right Pat now here is the AFC wild card situation Houston wins alonzo highsmith scores two touchdowns and the first one coming on a pass from moon now Seattle by losing will go on the road the wild-card game in the AFC Seattle at Houston back to Pat in charge at the Los Angeles Coliseum there is no score 10:35 left first quarter the Raiders ball at their own 13 yard line Wilson back to throw it'll be enough for a first down to Marcus Allen stop by single turn [Music] Magic Johnson standing down on the sidelines enjoying the festivities the guy who never likes to sit down you know he's a basketball player a lot like Marcus Allen and Walter Payton are running back the other guy that does everything I mean Payton and Allen they'll they'll run the ball if you need a blocker they'll block it they'll catch it they'll play the whole game and they know how to play Ron Rivera on the stop after a gain of six never forget gentlemen Magic Johnson [Applause] and the NBA final series and Kareem abdul-jabbar was hurt and they move magic into the post as you said he can do everything play in the middle play in the backcourt play forward if you want whatever you need we know is the same thing with Marcus Allen he's been a great tailback or halfback with the Rangers they get bo Jackson and they make Marcus Allen the full facts right side not much this time singleterry there early a gain of 30 Steve McMichael there to help Singletary that was interesting yesterday the Raiders were talking about how this game isn't as big as they anticipated you and I talked about this you looked the end of the season they thought there'd be a rack policy and people yelling screaming it would be the game the preview of the Super Bowl and all that stuff and who would have lit but if the Raiders were going to lose 9 out of 11 third and short [Applause] figure that way as the beers did you figured right he didn't get in the first down make Michael on the stop and they'll have to cut they'll measure I'm sure [Applause] Ron Rivera's in there for motors Wilson Mike Ditka said in our conversation yesterday that with Rivera in place of Wilson we don't lose much especially with the hell we Rivera and an unhealthy Otis Wilson short of the first down cherry semen is the referee the top of the screen and you see the Bears of white jerseys get the penetration they have three guys on the Raiders side of the line of scrimmage and that's what short yardage your goal line is all about who controls or who handles that line of scrimmage Dennis McKinnon is back deep for the bear that stand tally the Raider putter seems awkward to me and insurer to you not to say when the Raiders try to punt or do putt not to save a guy [Applause] the kicker as the Raiders were down in a hurry was made to stop are they gonna bring it all back [Applause] me against a bear Shaun Gayle 23 come in now again the rule is after the ball leaves the foot you can't hit the kicker you see the ball left the foot I don't know I don't see much contact there enough foul running into the kicker number 23 defense first just grazed it those of you who watched the New Orleans Saints beat Green Bay a come-from-behind victory for New Orleans 33 to 24 welcome to the Los Angeles Coliseum Summerall with John Madden no score in our contest with 8:05 left to play in the first quarter it's the Bears and the Raiders [Applause] gets the first sack of the day and those of you who watched Indianapolis win the AFC Eastern Division championship over Tampa Bay 24 to 6 welcome to our broadcast here at the Los Angeles Coliseum of the Raiders and bears nothing nothing by the way Eric Dickerson carried the ball 33 times gained 196 yards today scored twice what a season for Indianapolis [Applause] much hit by Ryan [Music] Indianapolis by the way clinches the AFC Eastern Division title for the first time since 1977 they were not chameleonian appleĆs at that time third down and 12 yards to go the raiders at their own 34 yard line third and 12 would fridge in the background there over Rivera's shoulder there he's getting a little anxious he's warming up you just start rocking right left get that body warmed up large background [Applause] Willson Steve McMahon this time what they've done affairs is moved Hampton inside and put al Harris in his place and watch what happens here with McMichael on the left here in Hampton on the right here's Hampton here's McMichael they wanted to get pressure up the middle now watch what that does you see that's the first thing that Wilson sees and he can't step up and did Kazan did that to give a big pass rush because he hadn't been getting that from Terry that pass rush in the middle [Applause] - pot again Denis lieutenant let it bounce [Music] Danny Anderson dan to cover it and now for another NFL update let's take you back to New York our studios in Brit Musburger well Pat there's some happy folks Angeles Coliseum Pat Summerall John Madden nothing nothing in the first quarter of bears and Raiders Bears had the ball like Tom sacked the quarterback duh Matsui right side three yards Matt Millen made the stop there's some quarter better watching the game Daryle Lamonica and a baseball cap of course he was the great quarterback from the Oakland Raiders and next to him on the George Blanda land it is the greatest competitor that I've ever known in my life you talk about a guy who would do anything to win there's a guy right there Clayton Kelly was like 48 years old and here's a young one it reminds me of land that Jim McMahon update those two guys are an awful lot alike great competitor [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well something in common with you look at Lamonica can we talk to you yesterday at practice Blanda and then you look at Jim McMahon and you talk about competitors in every aspect of life and they just keep doing I mean if you want to play play golf for Tinley wangster for racquetball or whatever they'll compete with the other thing about those guys they know how to play the game whatever it takes in the game to move the ball play it they knew that weren't for Kanaka at all and whatever game [Applause] completed [Applause] that was a bullet pass that thing hit Morris and hit him on his shoulder pad bounced back about 20 yards excuse me go ahead just watch here you talk about it a quarterback throwing a bullet in there watch this bullet the bullet got him right in me and they in the head facemask and shoulder pad it bounced back 20 I was talking about golf tube landed before the game John and I said what's your handicap and before he answered me he said what's yours no answer I got finally I got a six [Applause] twenty-seven 48 yard punt 14 yard returns 34 as we're looking at those quarterbacks and and Jim McMahon over in the sidelines you know that was the thing that that the that's the thing that the Bears are waiting for Jim McMahon I guess told you that he could have played today yeah he did Mike Ditka says that he doesn't want to play he wants to keep him for the playoff he figures two things he's going to get back in the playoffs one is McMahon and the other one is Jim covert their best offensive lineman an Otis Wilson all the way again he says he doesn't lose much with the Rivera solution is an exciting kind of player he's healthy I used one of the best away [Applause] they get just a couple of yards Rivera so is Richard dead after Wilson isn't having one of his great years in fact it was talking about those nine changes Dick Butkus says there should have been more than that he said one of them should have been Richard dent in fact Mike Ditka says that dentists and playing as well as he could or should be playing I don't know what I have to do to get this guy motivated he says there's only one guy I'm mad at really in spite of all the changes the only guy in Manhattan is still playing [Applause] the middle Christian's a little bit shy of a first down a gain of eight stop by fencing and there is another story John yeah you talk about guys playing their last game Walter Payton of course playing his last regular-season game and their offensive play in his last regular season game better an all-pro four years one of those guys that came into the game and really didn't have much of a chance it not only made the team then became a starter and he became a pro ballplayer and can still play maybe not getting it is Marcus Allen Steve McMichael again at the bottom of the pile by the way you saw the Goodyear blimp a minute ago that's the Columbia which is based in Carson California piloted today by Charles Russell from Downey California there's only one blimp up there it's all remember we did the super well we had like three or four we had a Super Bowl record for blimps I remember there are so many of them going across that Rose Bowl had a traffic jam up there blimps [Music] they did make the first down and so the Raiders maintain control nothing nothing first quarter 3:40 left to play bears and the Raiders we thought this would be perhaps the game of the year disappointing for both by going in over the left side pane of my and Gary fencing you know one of the reasons that mike ditka quit gary fencing back in was not really fencing so much as he wanted to get Duerson back at strong safety he's a Duerson was doing okay at free safety but he was a great strong safety he thought that it was a waste so I put him back to strong safety and he had a break fencing bag to the weak safe Wilson back to throw man gets it out the James [Applause] the Bears have faced so many times what in an earlier career with the Green Bay Packers and had such outstanding success we know right here as we look at the endzone if the Raiders are going to move the ball today they have to move it by passing and if they're going to pass they need this pass protection they have to give mark.wilson time they have a young offensive line John Clay doing a good job starting as a rookie a right tackle first and 10 Raiders on the bear 38 moles bar the center Mike Singletary makes the stop for an NFL update let's go to Brent Musburger again in New York that in looks at the Los Angeles Coliseum with two minutes in one second remaining first quarter [Music] [Applause] Rihan it is I'm sorry he gets a reader first down at the beer 25-yard line no it happened that time fat the bear defense was shifting and they really didn't get set in their shift and the Raiders took off really caught him in a shift took off and got a big soft spot over on that left side the man who got the first down stir hand came off hurt and he is down in front of the Raider bench Vance Muller has replaced it Wilson back to throw [Applause] they have mark Wilson's had a tough career kid play any anything that you're going to blame on the radar off and starts right there with this guy I mean he just had to rush that time he's just throwing the ball away and it's not it's not really the quarterback here and it's not even the past protection there's just no one open and by now dentists right there he has to throw that ball there's no one open the next best thing to do is get rid of it not take the side [Applause] brings up a second intent [Applause] smothered by Steve McMichael again after a gain of one there's Big John Clay's seat number 78 they're walking back to the huddle Mart shell the guy who played so many years for the Oakland Raiders wore number 78 is now an offensive line coach for the Raiders and he says that this John Clay is really gonna be a good play he's a full package he does he has all the parts he got a line for the good parts but I even let him have his number 78 so when you let a guy has your number I think you believe that [Applause] more like [Music] the tap and came back through the horseshoe and got him mark.wilson made that last move and there he was feeling so good about it watch den he goes by Holloway there he goes around Wilson and this Wilson starts to scramble out that way right into death [Applause] loss takes him back to the 31 [Applause] it comes from Chris Bar with Mark Wilson holding it'll be from 48 yards away closer to 49 [Applause] was a knuckleball Richard might have gotten I think show the official the official role with the ball was tipped he gave that signed and meant tip and it sounded like it was dipped backed up here sounded like it was blocked that's what you call a strong leg I thought you have to drive through anything that's up there pop that ball and drive it through say a hand think it on it I guess I've just made a knuckleball out of that thing that thing had a lot of power in it to get through that hand and looked like that other other blimp we were looking for what does Richard dent there 95 he's going to come in and he sees a guy I think that gets his hands up [Music] I think it hit a helmet it might have I'll tell you what if you go back and look at it again and look at the hole that was a bad hole by I think that's if they were healed look at this look at the angle of the ball he has to kick and then I think it hits number 59 Jamie Kimmel in the head that's what it looked like den got it for watch 59 right there it hit him in the back of the head that's what it did that's it that's a ricochet he reckoned that thing in that's only a point to half okay well you've lost nine out of eleven you had the time of year the Raiders have you take all the ricochets Jetray comes back [Music] 24 the flag on the play set leave made the stop and we'd like to welcome those of you who watch the Cowboys win two in a row and beat st. Louis and knock them out of the playoffs they won 21 16 at Texas Stadium and so the Minnesota Vikings will now go to New Orleans in the wild-card game where John Madden and I will be next week Minnesota illegal barley during the return number 51 receiving team first down that is the end of the first quarter if the 49ers win that takes place tonight Dennis gentry was hurt on the kickoff the flag on the play we're at the Los Angeles Coliseum what else can I tell you it's the end of the first quarter and it's three nothing nothing at the end of one the Raiders lead the Bears we're live at the Los Angeles Coliseum if you look down from the Goodyear blimp Columbia Bears have the ball first and Jen at their own 15 somewhere all John Madden [Applause] maybe three the calendars made to stop time of possession has become such a significant statistic and that's hard to say but look at this in 1987 the fall control teams the top ones New Orleans the Bears Denver Cleveland San Francisco all in the playoffs maybe not Denver whatever capacity might still be alive but everyone else keep it they can't score [Applause] of nineteen Turan made the stop yeah always think about that time of possession you always think that it's your offense but the defense has a lot to do with that too the quicker they get the ball back to you then that's going to give you more place so it's a combination of your offense being able to have some control and then your defense getting the ball right back to you helps John do you think at this point in the year I've heard a lot of people say while the defense looks tired and the offensive looks tired when you shoot into the playoffs you don't get tired so they shouldn't have any any one to anyone that gets tired really isn't a playoff team I think there's a teaser toss is back to Payton flags on the play before they ever get things under way and I think the 30 seconds lock had expired delay of game offense still first down [Applause] that looks like an expired clock noted bergen near the center it's amazing he has a bad left shoulder and bad right elbow and he made the Pro Bowl he's going to have to have offseason surgery on both oh I asked him before the game I was down in the field I said you going to the Pro Bowl he said you better believe it I wouldn't miss that on her successful you get they still cherish that recognition by your fear [Applause] Dana for Sean Jones made the stop you know there's so much Barney and guys are you know they get a little injury and they don't play they're out and a guy like hildenburg who not only never misses a game he has a torn rotator cuff on his left shoulder and bad elbow and you know and plays the whole season in the game and and plays like this you know it's just a tribute to the guy by the way he can he can play and hang in there and you're fine he's a real football players what I'm trying to say he might make the old man I suspect he will [Applause] Moorehead struggles stop by Matt Millen but a gain of 13 and that should be enough or close depending upon that mark again to get a first down for the Bears it is you've also talked about those types of people that never miss games how about Walter Payton 13 years and you know we know all the great records he's had his last season everything but in that 13-year career he's only missed one game and that was in his rookie year and he's a halfback I mean he's the guy that the shooting live bullets at radius of all the records he has I think that's the most remarkable Thomas it's maybe a yard and place of suey just take a look at what John and I were talking about his contributions in 1985 of course that was probably the the year that the Bears had their best year they ever had but they had 21% 44% and then Peyton's total Payton that year was 35 percent of their total offense the offense that led him to the Super Bowl and to win in the Super Bowl [Applause] second [Applause] the place will be called stop by my pains the gain of eight golf just had a couple of lead weeks and he was saying last night to us that he just how many quarterbacks did quarterback since he's been with the Bears yeah he's been with the Bears five years he's had ten quarterback he said he looks at those guys like duper and those guys down in Miami he said they have one quarterback Marino all the time said he's had ten different guys quarterback stuff he said he's just getting a good feeling with McMahon just getting that groove [Applause] scrambling is finally knocked out of bounds and under the bed [Applause] [Applause] they're booing Sam's seal [Applause] let's say that's a respect that a Walter fate has in this leg I mean he goes in watch this is just a straight died play he's going to hit the hole that he's going to cut out to his left look he can still make that cut that he made on McIlroy he makes Sam Steele miss there then he gets some Sam Steele gets him going back and then it's that hit I think it was Lyndon King number 52 maybe that they were booing whoever they were not booing [Music] [Applause] [Music] from Tomczak seal [Applause] gain of 11 wooly golf with tomczak tender reception 230 yards one touchdown with McMahon 22 465 six touchdowns all of that is before today Tom Zach is today looking in that direction wisely so I think so that's the thing and it's not that that's where the Raider defense of weakness is but when you have Willie golf that's the guy you want to get the ball in his hands cuz anytime you do there's a chance that it can be a touchdown well he's gonna beat somebody it's a question of getting the ball to up right and they play so far off and now that the Bears have started hitting in front of the corners and of course that's just inviting those corners up and when they do that the boom you go by I'm Cody he's done an amazing job two three four years ago he can get open but he couldn't catch him or weekend catches him blocks this is sue [Applause] maybe a gain of one [Music] yeah there's a football player to hell along I think if you had to make up a poster of a defensive lineman it might be how a long bunch of their how he hands flights hand pipes down the line makes on the guy just closes everything makes that whole pile go down towards the sidelines there are people John who say that how I long has not had as good a year as he didn't pass but when you mention how he longs name two other coaches as Mike Ditka said here's Tomczak roll chez completion to Willie hit by Stacey Turan had passed off his arm and it's incomplete [Music] [Applause] as Stacey Turan was the guy that was in coverage and the ball hits him watch him right here he'll get his right arm in there he's in fact he had to ball up his arm that it just went out that was Emery Moorehead not golf who's on the bottom of that stack they're down [Applause] wide-receivers one of the direction of ball the Bears will send in Kevin Butler with an attempt to tie the game that's one place it's tough to go on this Raider team is on those inside slants because those two safeties van McElroy and Stacy Turan are are as good a hitters as are on this Lake when you get in that territory where they can have a shot at you you better be willing to accept some contact [Applause] Behr's time Flores Raiders with 824 left in the first half [Applause] 8:24 left in the first half at the Los Angeles Coliseum 3 3 tie here CBS Sports presents the Mazda Gator Bowl it'll be the Gamecocks of South Carolina against the Tigers of LSU New Year's Eve at 2:30 Eastern Time and on New Year's Day the fifty-second Cotton Bowl Classic the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame against Texas A&M [Music] [Applause] chased by the Bears and brought down and about the nineteen tampo so brought him down [Applause] somewhat of an argument not a very enthusiastic one [Applause] that's the last game of the season it's a Raiders last game you know they're all done so you don't get into those mites for the same enthusiasm you're doing in the meet of the season 3-3 tie 814 left in the first half the Raiders and the Bears Pat Summerall John Madden we're at the Los Angeles Coliseum score 3-3 the Raiders have the ball at their own 19 first and 10 mark.wilson the quarterback at James Lofton Marcus Allen Harris may the stop there's Walter Payton over on the sidelines and when you start to run down his list of accomplishments it would take the rest of our broadcast taping up oh no they're just putting the cleats in there changing a tire well you know sometimes you'll break a cleat and they have to put a new one on sometimes the field is slippery more slippery than you think so you have to change your cleats to a different type a longer [Applause] on his hand slippery er said a word I don't know I couldn't say it we're slippery look at Walter Payton's records my gosh climb Mount Everest twice 21700 career combined yards that's receiving returning kicks rushing you know the other one we talked about the fact that in his whole career the way he plays oh yeah because he does so many things that was dance Muller stopped by Wilbur Marshall and the Raiders will have to punt [Applause] back deep goes Dennis McKinnon who was a leader in punt returns in the NFL Tali back to punt will be back to punt but a Raider and talking to Tom Flores Raider coach yesterday it just seemed like he was saying hey you can't believe what's happened to us 15 different starting lineups in 15 games [Music] [Applause] who gets away from it turns out to be an excellent kick after it looked like it was buried hey any Anderson down to covered it looked like it might be disaster it turns out to be a 53-yard kick with no return Los Angeles Coliseum the Bears and the Raiders legendary names in pro football tied at 3-3 in the second quarter 636 left before half-time bears with the ball at their own 18 yard line Matsui and beg your pardon Walter Calvin Thomas [Applause] second and three the Saints will host the wild card against the Viking Detroit beat Atlanta going back to that same situation if the 49ers win tonight two lost souls second and three [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 17-7 the Eagles over Buffalo Reggie White will lead the league in sex and surprisingly Kansas City beat Seattle 41 to 20 Seahawks play the Oilers in the wild card match Houston winning today dallas won their last two Indianapolis the AFC Eastern champion [Applause] I'm out Chicago my glasses and strap surrounding his neck a little bit frustrated over the last couple of weeks three three bears Raiders Jim McMahon who was a father for the third time this morning Alexis a daughter born to Jim and his wife from congratulations [Music] tell you he's a remarkable guy the Bears count on him so but you know when he's in there that red he's out to sea we'll wait until McMahon gets back he may not be picture-perfect there is a [Applause] the past might have been intercepted by ban that's some interception by McIlroy he almost lost his pants his shirt the whole deal there bunch of here gulp just on this side I'm Sammy seal he starts to run across a field McIlroy's 26 he starts to Dublin the ball thrown by bake a little short watch McIlroy come up with the ball look his belt goes off the shirt goes up he gets a whole deal thing Willie golf does draw a crowd but just McIlroy goes up they got another guy in front of him another guy behind him McIlroy gets the interception what Dickon he probably sent that [Music] [Applause] miss Allen comes out of the Raider backfield on first and ten picks up six Raiders at their own 26-yard line second at four it will be Rivera and Dave Duerson made the stop [Applause] we talked about the many things that will Walter Payton does not a percentage passer I guess you'd have to say there one one statistic there that is very impressive as a touch the touchdown second for Wilson retreat [Applause] now they throw a flag penalty marker down when they need the Raiders didn't have a receiver out there on that side mark.wilson got flushed laughed and he was running left there was no Raider receiver out there where he threw the ball there's some guys here that think about Malone and Pittsburgh mark.wilson here no matter what they do intentional grounding number six offense loss of down no matter what they do John it's not good enough you know watch it as he gets coming he comes out here then he has to run to this side now he doesn't have any receivers in here where he throws the ball and usually you can get away with that if you have a receiver in that area or someone out there now watch him when he gets flushed to his left his receiver here comes this way there's no one up that sideline [Applause] standing in the pocket to be way Jessie Hester was antenna receiver [Applause] in spite of the Raider fan yer this year Tom Flores has maintained his composure you look at Wilson in the last few weeks and seemed to be gaining respect and confidence from his teammates him from himself do you know when he had the most confidence when he had Bo Jackson in there running I've always said that the thing that gives the quarterback confidence is a strong running game when you have it you're like King Kong when you lose it you're like Mickey Mouse the side of his foot [Applause] I was wouldn't McKinnon makes a late choice here to take that out of Bounce he really never got control of it he had it in his middle and had just started a row right down his leg Davis was there and came up with the interception and so the Raiders takeover in good shape McKinnon slow getting up three three at the Los Angeles Coliseum 402 left to play in the first half don't forget CBS Sports presents the Mazda Gator Bowl the Gamecocks of South Carolina against LSU and then after that on New Year's Day Notre Dame even Texas A&M [Music] [Applause] [Music] he's not got a bandage for loss of three yards Dave Duerson that was interesting fat that was going to be the same thing to Walter Payton just through that was going to be a run pass by Marcus Allen he was trying to hit James Lofton down the right sideline but it was a good coverage by the bear defense so Marcus Allen just had to make it look like a run Jim Harbaugh warming up over on the bear sideline along with Mike Tomczak that doesn't necessarily mean a change in quarterbacks second down jean-marc Wilson back to throw Jessi Hester the antenna receiver Maurice Douglass back there right with him he's doing a good job Maurice duck was starting his first time second year bear he's really a safety but he's playing corner now he's come up with one interception already the play before that there was a run passed by Marcus Allen he had good coverage on Lofton then he comes back on this play and almost intercepts a very nearly another interception something might be wrong I think he got a rib he's reaching in there for that rib area probably have offseason jobs he has the most interest interesting of any player in the NFL interesting is a male stripper we watch her that's right there you see Hester's left foot comes up and hits him right in the stomach just as he was in the process of intercepting that ball good thing he wasn't stripped I'll tell you right there where he got kicked you don't have any padding there anyway that's the same as being strapped [Applause] dan Hampton was first and playing in the middle in place of William Perry and that's where Hampton would like to remain and that's where Mike Ditka wanted him he said that's the thing that we needed there is the pass rush from the middle they come on a stop that time Hampton was working to the outside and then he came back in dance started outside came to the inside hampton went outside room they both collapsed so it's 4th down 3 3 the score 325 left to play and the first task Keith Oregon standing back to you remember he got hurt kick taught by Dave Duerson 35-yard punt handled by Duerson and the Bears will take over 3 3 3 14 left first hand we are at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum what a history this place has for professional football and so many other events the Legion wise Olympic why is everything 3-3 the Bears of the Raider tough place to play [Applause] [Music] [Applause] there's ball first and ten at their own 23 Tomczak back to throw or try to evolve Bennett up in the air and when somebody knocks something up into the air nobody can catch it throw it to you directly you can when they knock it up in the air like that it's like the old jump ball and none of these guys these guys that are going up for it are guys that are in the pits like how he long here is working against Van Horn you're banging stuff you're hitting guys you're knocking things up in the air down on the ground there's mud just dirt there stuff and you can't catch a ball all you want to do with those hands has hit someone not catch ball that's what happens home you're not dressed for that dirty dope Isaac catch balls are always lemon [Music] [Applause] so I gave up 90 yards short of a first Matt Millen and Jerry Robinson were the first two Raiders to arrive there's an interesting guy rod Martin he's been with the Raiders for 11 years I remember when we we drafted him it was the last round it was the 12th round and I called John Robinson with his SC and I said hey are there any players left we don't know who did take with his last pick he said has anyone drafted rod Martin yeah I said who and he said rod Martin he's a good linebacker I said okay we'll draft him that was 11 years ago he's played in in three Super Bowls been an MVP of a Super Bowl played in the Pro Bowl been the outstanding defensive player and the Raider team and it was one of those guys that why didn't everyone take even the more amazing part of that story after you drafted him and he came to Raider camp you caught him I didn't want to admit that then the 49ers picked him up then they caught him and then we got him back so I never did I never did say in my life we were ever smart never said how to smile [Applause] third and short it's a bear burst down rod Martin of whom we spoke made the stop I'll tell you you know your rod part was never a big guy but he has the biggest hand I mean he has great big strong hands and those things are like bison he has good powerful legs I mean he's not like those 240 250 pound guys but he's a real powerful guy he's a real smart guy he can read he has good instinct but the thing is once he gets those clamps on you you're gotten someone said to me rod Martin has hands that looked like a toilet seat that's how big they are three three Raiders and the Bears two minutes ago in the first half the city of Los Angeles in the background and that of course is the familiar sight of the Paris tiles and the Los Angeles Coliseum along this time lined up infernal J hildenburg right over [Applause] and it for golf Mike Haynes on the coverage that's when the woolly gold should have had you can tell that's what he's thinking when he goes back he has those gloves on yeah we talked about that before they got those tack applied leather gloves now since they outlawed stickum but the sacrified leather didn't tack to that ball that time that's my word of the Year tacca fide tack a fide yeah and then when the balls in the air you tack it to the tackle fighting you hope it sticks [Applause] Nathan gets a beer first in fact Stacey Turan made the stop pick up a 12-block running with a minute and 38 seconds left of the first hand Tomczak get some set up quickly as quickly as he can [Applause] time [Applause] and completed intended for Morris he was out of bounds covered by Ron fellows hey the beers have two timeouts here now when the ball is at midfield you're on to 50 the first thing you want to think of in terms of getting 20 yards getting in that field goal range then you get to around a 30 then you go for the endzone and with two timeouts I don't think they have to rush they could use one timeout then of course you have to save one for the field goal second down and ten [Applause] get us Gentry out of the backfield for a gain of four stopped by Sam seal that last time Howie long was over here on the left tackle the rookie John watch a house key and he's doing a pretty good job [Applause] - maybe Jones Greg Townsend I have no idea what that play was then I have no idea why they tried to pop a running play in there it seemed like they were getting pretty good pass protection you know when you need and you need like 25 yards that was a surprise call to me timeout taken by the Bears they have one remaining Mike Ditka baby did you say that - Tom say would you run to play for well the plays are signaled in most for the most part from the sidelines well maybe he audible eyes doubt of it though you know the quarterback so how do you do that the coaches send in a play then you can audible eyes out of it final score the Saints over the Green Bay Packers Mike Ditka is gonna have to get some backup gone myself now the thing is what he has to do is he has to go and punt now I mean they come to the third down and they just run it and they're not in field goal position was like a give up play and we all know that my dish is not a give up type of guy so I like I said I don't understand it a competitor yes he saw I saw we saw one of the beer players smiling on the sidelines I think if he saw that player might be looking for a new suit [Applause] Barnhart back to punt for the bear way [Applause] Richie Phillips number 48 now the Bears can stop him one time down here and force him to button maybe he know that whole situation there was kind of suspect I mean they ran the ball they didn't even come close to get into first down then he took it timeout and then they had to go in fun I think they took a timeout just so Ditka could get to Tom sack quicker and say hello the Goodyear blimp Columbia pace down in Carson California piloted by Charles Russell home is in Downey California the Columbia and her sister ships in America and Enterprise traveled over 100,000 miles every year Raiders happy now just to run it out gain of three by mark.wilson let it roll [Music] [Applause] [Applause] clock winding with the score three three field goals by bar and Butler and the Raiders are close to the locker room so their regular season for Walter Payton he looks up at the scoreboard which is displaying some of his most memorable moments this took place just before the game started moving time for Walter George Blanda organization and football people everywhere it's a privilege for me to help honor the top rusher in the history of the National Football League no one has demonstrated a great greater personal and professional commitment to excellence having been in professional football for four decades myself I've seen some of the great ones and there has been no one better than number 34 Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears [Applause] well George in that position that encompasses when he blocks he's the best blocker when he goes out for a pass he's a top receiver when he runs the ball of course you know what he's going to do and and he's a very unselfish guy only missed one game in his whole career you put all that together and how could anyone do any better you can't what lurk Ickx off this [Applause] after 48 stop by reggie phillips return of 20 you know John there's been a lot of talk and we're not disclosing anything that we know that everyone else does doesn't and that Walter Payton might be part of the ownership of an expansion franchise he might be part of the the Bears board of directors but somewhere somehow he belongs in the hierarchy of this game I'm sure he will be Wilson Jamarcus to the line of scrimmage and not much more Wilber Marshall right there if you looked at Wilson this is the first half in the second quarter he didn't have a past completion you can see under 10 yards he's 4 for 4 over 3 to 20 then 1 for 3 20 to 30 so over over 10 yards he only completed one pass the second half he in the second quarter he didn't have a pass completion so that's what they were talking about let's just get something going well that's what the Bears defense does to you son gets it up to Todd Christensen gain of seven yo and that's when he had as is his best night the you know the radar offense where it was like through the old Raider offense is when they had Bo Jackson there remember that Monday night game against Seattle I mean that really looked like the old Raiders that could could run it and you know and had to speed and can do everything with it and of course Bo Jackson was injured they're playing without him and I think that you can just see Wilson's confidence go down that's Wilbur Marshall who is the injured pair 14 minutes left in the third it's 3-3 [Applause] that run got this crowd a little excited here that that first half three the three was kind of boring there was neither offense seem to do anything giddy the Raiders get in this formation Marcus Alvers like a tailback flip him the ball get a couple blocks out there he breaks off him gives a little stiff arm run out of bounds a little contact brings have to joint to its feet this games great players Marcus Allen Mark Wilson knocked down by Steve McMichael one of the game's most underrated players six sacks by the Bears it looked like he just ran right over right over here right over Dean Murali on that one that's a problem that they've always had here is with Mark Wilson's number of sacks he takes but of course part of it is you got to get those guys blocked you can't just let McMichael go right through you the way the way he went through Dean morality that time don't worry you got a stick them in there in that middle tomb you got to stop getting up a head of steam like that you didn't forget about hair masses out of bounds it Chris Wood's made the reception stop by Maurice Douglas [Applause] there's Chris whiz here here's what it looks like when you run in a pattern that's two guys starting for their first time Douglas was turned and looking to the inside that's a pretty good way to run an out move on she was out of bounds third and 17 it's going all the way at quarterback for the Raiders [Music] and he drops the throw he's flushed out of the pocket again since the fleet and that's close to a first down the most upset guy and that his McMichael because he had him he had him he flushed him out and almost had him in the outside and he let him get rid of that pass they probably going to measure score is three three now they say no it's a Raider first down 64 is deep Verona there who was trying to block them gets away from McMichael runs out of that there's 64 he should have turned back to get McMichael but he turns up gets another block Lofton catches the ball the interesting thing McMichael is beaten were all in two places in a row the Raiders just took morality out and they put veteran Mickey Marvin in there great guard Mickey has been lifting weights for four months they say he's bigger and stronger these inside him out on a pool a full block to the left Marcus Allen the ball carrier there's Mickey I'll tell you one thing about Mickey Marvin he'll give you a day's work I mean he's been on the inactive list he's at he a knee operation you said he never lifted weights before and then he had his spare time so he started lifting weights feels he's stronger than he's ever been for all he misses those two blocks holding guns Marvin [Applause] second [Applause] [Music] left side stopped by dan Hampton and Steve McMichael again the Walter Pater painter Polaroid's here you see they have those things numbered like down and distance and what the situation is so he can see what defenses they're in on running downs this is what it looks like before the ball snapped of what benefit to Walter Payton how the linemen are reacting or how that who the strong blocker is or what well just just where the holes are before the ball snap after that at all all reactions Esther gets the ball to Hester but a flag is down on [Applause] Terry seaman is going to be against the Bears Raiders deeper at the 27-yard line already offside lining up in the neutral zone number 90 defense first and al Harris is number 90 [Applause] you know the interesting thing about this radar team of the the non interesting thing is their offensive line doesn't seem to be able to handle the line of scrimmage anymore they don't seem to knock anyone off that line often in motion and this is [Applause] shredder warren and wilbur marshall make sure it comes down and Derek is William Perry comes harris-perry goes in this will be a man possessed here because Mike Ditka said I don't know if this will motivate anyone or not when they don't start you said we're gonna find out and this is the first play you're going to find out what is a motivated refrigerator go light the quarterback Mark Wilson who is down by Richard dead but the refrigerator went past the target I'll tell ya motivated refrigerator goes pretty fast watch him he just runs right by it he's going right through Dwight Wheeler there and anything else that will wrap up Oh where'd that guy go hey if you want to go home for the holidays the refrigerator is full he's not a bad guy to follow in there he'll open a gap for you [Music] a freezer to go in it [Applause] 14 at the 26 Wilson back to throw charm was hit just as he let it go bar comes on to try field all again it was May I go who put the pressure on Wilson [Applause] today the fridge was in their turn they get pretty good pressure up the middle and Michael and the right of the screen the fridge right in the middle the screen gets knocked down gets back up Bulls lose way but there's that quarterback if Michaels on top of the mouth this will be Mark Wilson holding and bar for the field goal from 44 yards away things work out pretty well down at inside the five chilli block three three the score remains dan Hampton got the big hand up monitor [Applause] let's watch again and see you got a piece of that field goal attempt by bar here is the combination here of Hampton in Harris right in the middle watch both their hands go up right there in the middle and a flat I think they'll probably give half to Dan Hampton and half the AL Harris [Music] al Harris is blocked for field goals plus one extra point this year Jim McMahon over on the bear sideline they had the ball first and ten [Applause] whirls over the left side for nine now watches where the Bears ran the ball you know they're starting John whoa Joe husky at left tackle and they haven't run to the left at all but they made 43 yards in the middle and 12 outside to the right and they haven't made or ran one time to the left yet where's that's because Jim coverts not in there covert and McMahon and all of the injured bears Otis Wilson all made the trip except for the injured Neil Armstrong [Music] Neil Anderson [Applause] gain of 8 for Peyton I just saw Jim covert up here at halftime he's up here in the bear coaching booth ask him what he is doing and he said he's watching for Raydor blitzes I said how they doing he goes I don't know who they have been blessed tackle you know you know what attack [Music] [Applause] Matt Millen on top of the pile along with Jerry Robinson but they the guy taken his his place over here won't your house key has been doing a pretty good job they haven't really run to his side but he's done a pretty good job the past Protection Act he does a pretty good job just holding that name up on his back gotta have big shoulders well that's 13 letters in that name and that's that's an NFL record most letters on a back in the NFL look they're going they start all the way under his arm kids go down to the other armpit why had to quit my shoulders were quite [Applause] gell-mann suey taken down by rod Barton let's watch mojo house key here he's going against Shawn Jones who was a leading soccer last year in the AFC he's not having a great year this year but he does a pretty good job in pass protection hard worker stays with his guy interestingly Mike Ditka said he's really a guard when we put him on a tackle because Cobert was hurt and he said I like his footwork I like his quickness he's an athlete and I think I think Mike Ditka just wanted to get him in a game and see how he play a regular NFL season we'll them tripped him up but sure he got five and a beer first down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] some Matsui yesterday and he showed me the gray hair you know a couple years ago do you remember when we did this game and and and he had some some Dyke coming out of his hair and I said it was dyeing the towel and he said he didn't do it but then last night he showed me all the gray he has in his hair so I think he was dying it then but he doesn't die it anymore I think I think I caught him some gray-haired people are proud [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that was an interesting coverage there Matt Millen on Matsui I'll guarantee you to Penn Staters they're still out there talking about it India that is Imagi that millionnaire is a character they give each other high fives even shake everything they're like two guys who are playing in the park hey I almost got you know you danced back to Penn State second down and ten [Music] [Applause] [Music] down he finally got a yard and a flag goes down great Townsend is the designated pass rusher for the Raiders bomb Florrie says when he comes in there he'll raise havoc personal foul unnecessary roughness number 99 defense first not a very popular call locally let's see wellshe's see Shawn Jones he's right up here and the right of the screen we'll watch a whole play he's coming in he's coming to the inside on a stunt and he's coming down the line that was Townsend there that made the tackle see where Sean Jones was I don't know he was around the ball somewhere else [Applause] but it'll be first and goal after a pickup of 24 who is interesting they they they had Mitsui down that sideline of running back on a line back then they come back and they get Thomas Sanders down that sideline and this time they complete it to him Jameer Sanders coming out of the backfield play fake a little ruled by Tom sack he sees Sanders deep and he gets him before the safety to get across him gain of 24 yards it'll be first and goal at the 4 lord I administer left third quarter [Applause] for Walter Payton and not much doing Bob chaski made the stop there the all-time touchdown leaders Aten needs one down in here hey that's a pretty good list I think if you had to take it all time list and say who do you want to take is your running backs maybe Jim Brown and Walter Payton wouldn't be a bad start but it did start a franchise with that I think those two they know how to get it in the end zone Jim Brown field now I wonder if you would like to see [Applause] or even care [Applause] he gets to the four knocked out of bounds well they weren't trying to get the ball that time to Walter bate you see it was going to be a play played in a bootleg and cap bozos number 86 and tight in on this side that was the guy that they were trying to hit he was covered so then he had a run with a ball watch bozo here 86 he's doing the blocking against rod Martin now he's going to come off in the end zone that is who Tom sack is looking for but Stacey Turan was on him [Applause] now bears take a timeout 3:09 left in the third quarter [Music] and some are all John Madden the Raiders fares tied at three apiece with 309 left in the third quarter Walter Payton needing just one touchdown to tie Jim Browns all-time touchdown record producer Bob dinner just talked to Jim Brown and he said I want him to make it which prai's me at all here's Tomczak [Applause] Zach and he didn't make it defense just about a foot short the price as you said he came out there and he sold out on that to get it in the end zone that was one of those option again option pass run watch millon number 55 is just mirroring him takes on the block in Thompson Stacey Turin hits him right at the same time watch 30 come in right there Dylan underneath and two ran on top of them this is an interesting player for Mike Ditka though wish your starting quarterback is down it brings up a fourth and short plus Tomczak if you considering field goal Tomczak is the holder yeah with the score of three to three I don't know I think the Bears and Mike Ditka seem to go for it on fourth down more than any team in the NFL Jim McMahon just walked out of your picture and that's Ditka's kneeling and talking to Tom Zach [Music] there's very successful on fourth down conversions and as you said Johnny he's one of those guys who doesn't say I'm gonna settle I'm gonna go well you can see that graphic there he's gone for it 21 times you see on that where Mike Tom Zack is down there Jim McMahon being the first guy down there to see them it even though they play the same positions tomczak is the backup for McMahon they're very good friends and really really respect each other McMahon taking a little nourishment after all he was a father earlier today and again congratulations wave had a baby girl Alexis yesterday I said yesterday yeah that gives them two they already already have one other girl Ashley the boy Shawn plus a son well anyway it looks like the Bears are gonna go for it but I for would have bet on that anyway Harbaugh is the quarterback mate as the runner they give it to Payton and Matsui blocks with you instead to get in think I would have given it to Peyton I went to let him I would have take this out with him not bring a quarterback in off the bench that have imported watch that the Raiders are down there go line defense they win the battle right there on that scrimmage Harbaugh tries to go up get over and then the jumpers get him going backwards Stacey Turan and Eddie Anderson knocked our ball backwards so it remains 3-3 in the third quarter I'd say the guy who made that play is bill from Cal right here he straightens up to then Matt Millen and Anderson come in over the top once again in the gap right there bill for Kelly so he takes on two guys right there that stops him and then here comes middle and an end [Music] [Applause] complete [Applause] misty Jackson but a gain of 21 yards and the Raiders get some breathing room strange game it looks like no one wants to win it did three three and they go for it the quarterback goes down they put in another quarterback try a quarterback sneak Raiders didn't have a fast completion in the second quarter strange indeed [Applause] [Music] Marcus out to about the 30 knocked out of bounds by Maurice Douglass gain of seven new Jarvis a great emotional lift though for any team as a goal line stand when you have a goal line stand and stop a team in the goal line that just kind of starts pumping adrenaline through your all team defensive guys run off the field and start saying to the office if guys hey now it's your turn we did our part that's right in the defensive guys you don't know that they did it but the offensive guys feel it that they have to keep up their part second down [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] singleterry you know and the other interesting thing about that bad as the other defense they're upset that their offense didn't get it in right they said we've been fighting out here all day we've held these guys to three points we get it down in a one-yard line and can't even get anything we've come up with an airball donut did ya obviously not too pleased about things and discussing them with his offensive coordinator Eddie Hughes I'll be discussing the same things we're discussing probably say hey why can't we get it into the end zone the first down greater [Applause] bring up the second down situation second at four Marcus got six comparing the two runners today only today mate is carried 12 times averaging four point eight Allen 15 times averaging four point three the one time Peyton probably should have carried it 25 seconds left of the third the hand stop by Singletary close to first down maybe he got it yes he did big number five you are the Raider offense looks like it's kindly it's finally coming alive that's the end of the third quarter with the score the Chicago Bears three the Los Angeles Raiders three we now pause for a word from your local station [Music] Los Angeles Coliseum Pat Summerall John Madden the Raiders and the bear 3-3 tie over there side stop by Singletary and Finn's ik the one that year they want to bring up after that a tie for the bears today would be like a loss but for them to get home field in the first playoff game they need a win today if not it'll be the Redskins Redskins of course one yesterday in overtime against Minnesota and of course so wherever wins the NFC West well it could be the Saints who won today or it could be the 49ers tonight [Applause] mark Wilson and it's inside the 30 they stopped by Duras at the gain of 24 yo it's interesting how this all started on that fourth down goal line fly stop and a quarterback sneak now it looks like the Raiders have gonna live they're moving the ball gets a little run vesti Jackson playing off and James Lofton comes up misses a tackle then fence it comes across this is the one who started the whole thing good penetration by Pakal then they need the linebacker comes up over the safety comes up over that it seemed to lift the whole Raider team conversely it seems like it has taken a lotta air out of the later started to move from there that's working [Applause] right side to the right I got a new yard maybe no gain now they're claiming Rumble the Bears are but it's still reader ball I think the last thing we want to do is finish the season on a low note three straight losses and going to the playoffs Mike dick has never had three state losses since he's been to bear coach you know in past years John they've gone to Atlanta when they were in the playoffs and we asked him in our conversation if he was going back to Atlanta and he said no way we play in the West we'll go to Arizona [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] but a pickup of I that was a pretty good collision over there when Marcus Allen coming up the side sideline endorsed and coming over they they went a pat on a pan of 3222 paid to paint what about a guy like fencing who's had such a fine outstanding career now all of a sudden they say last game perhaps of his career regular season almost certainly you get a start I think what they're trying to do is put some emotion back into the defense I think the beer is filled they've lost anything and defenses he Mark Wilson again eight sack of the day and this one again by Steve McMichael McMichael comes up the middle and Richard dent comes from the outside watch McMichael he's on a stunt he's gonna he's gonna come on a loop then he comes right up the middle dent was really the first guy there he was he made Wilson bring the ball down then Wilson stepped up right into McMichael that brings up a fourth down situation and bar comes in to attempt the field goal from 46 yards for the Raiders McMichael has indeed had a big day ours had to block today too [Applause] was there with innocent Anthony Harris get that play down pretty well they get a big push in that middle watch him just take those black jerseys back then get the hands up there's nine hands up they're still three three just to bring you up-to-date Walter Payton has 57 yards rushing the Bears got down to the one-yard line one foot line really and couldn't get in from there they tried the quarterback sneak so the score remains 3-3 the Raiders brought it out and that I think John has to be one of the major turning points in the final result I think so I think I think when they get down in the goal line the Bears they should have just given the ball to Walter Payton let him boom let him bang it in there instead they try and go with this quarterback sneak and I think this was a big play in this game 3 3 now the Raiders hold him here and it looked like it took a lot of wind out of that bear team and it gave the Raiders some confidence of course they didn't do anything with it but it sure did change the game around there for a while well they got back into the area where Chris Barr could try a 44 yard successfully Tomczak now [Applause] I think the Bears got it back came diving from the left I think that's the first time that the beers run to the left today they've had success with it or they had success on that play and then of course baton fumbles at the end the ball is just straight out there graders can't get it misses their mill and just misses his dive for it and Willie Gault comes in and gets it no one died there he'd uh he'd go for just grass but he misjudged the ball well he's a linebacker for a body they hit the ground Calvin the other running back and that's Thomas Sanders the flag on the play for yard game Tom Flores were saying to me yesterday well here's Jerry seaman offside against the radar him just saying I was hoping this would be a chance we're out of the playoffs I would hope I was hoping it would mean nothing offside number 30 defense lined up in the neutral zone still first and just continuing he said I was just hoping we could play just play [Applause] you can see Stacey Turan up there right on the 40-yard line number 30 he's but he's lined up past the ball here he is again he's lined up just back off a little number 30 there then he drops out Thomas was the man in motion shouldn't be enough for a bear first down Matt Millen and Jerry Robinson made the stop but a gain of about six yards I'll say this the Bears really don't look like a a playoff team I mean they don't look like that team isn't it starting to peak as they go into the playoffs I think in the NFC the 49ers look like that I think the Saints look like that I don't think the Redskins do and I don't think the Minnesota Vikings do on a roll as they say and if you look at every Super Bowl winner it's that team that is under all right [Applause] by Jerry Robinson and he had a shot at intercepting and he knows it we know it Willie golf was the intended receiver there's a guy Dan McElroy what a year he's had in spite of the Raider record everyone here feels he should be in the Pro Bowl he's one of those guys that just throws his body at anything that moves fact he was telling me yesterday that he's just alignment in the body of a defensive back I think Reed with that but he just loves to play yeah we had less safeties this game like that fencing is a lot like McElroy like fencing they're similar left side rod Martin on the stop gain of five not enough for a first down Denver's a team that might be getting on a roll and of course I guess if you got a guy with a gun like John Elway you create your own role anytime you want and I think that's what the bears are thinking here to that well we're not on a roll we're not peeking but we don't have jim mcmahon when we get jim mcmahon will be in a role in peak i don't know that that's true though i don't know why we leave that but you talk as we talk everyone says if you got Elway you got a shot Denis jittery took the pass [Applause] my name's wound up for the football it won't be enough for a first down and the Bears will have to fund they're gonna say that Gentry was down but after he was down to ball puffs popped right up into my Keynes's hands cuz this doesn't do a lot of good here when you throw and again you throw for the first down that pump up out of there you have to grab it but the whistle had blown before that ain't gonna go for it not gonna feel girls too far for that left side and he might have it that's what they should have done in the goal line came made the stop and I think Payton has the first down and Matsui in the backfield or was Calvin Thomas he goes in motion then they just hand it to Payton on to die right in there on that left side he just gets in here just bangs around awhile comes up with a first down good blocking behind Becker for the most part first down bears Caitlin is carried 15 times for 74 yards [Applause] and as he's done for so long he squirmed for a couple of yards stop to kill Waja hausky is number 73 the injured bear and to stop and wait to see how serious that is Blair would be his replacement 3:3 still a high score [Applause] you Notre Dame against the Aggies of Texas A&M we're at the Los Angeles Coliseum the Bears and the Los Angeles Raiders [Applause] [Music] [Applause] rushed by Stacey Turan on the safety blitz man Suey was the intended receiver JC Tran was coming so fast blanston by the time he comes through is your luck he's up there at the top of the screen on the left of the screen comes from the outside of his mouth manner is such that he goes downfield about ten yards after he hit Tom said brings up a third and long situation third and eighth [Applause] of 18 and the Bears are in scoring range again the Baris did this earlier they take Morris and they bring them all the way across the field to decide that will involved and clear it out on they did that in the first half have got a big play out of it and they didn't come back to it and tell them so it'll be first down bears at the Raider 19 3-3 tie Walter Payton couldn't get another chance here to tie Jim Brown record [Applause] inside the 15 he got 5 yards stop by Jerry Robinson Mike Ditka's got his sleeves rolled up that made serious well he started you know he he started out in the ante the sports going on and he got rid of the coat that was the first thing then the sleeve started coming up that's the second thing the third thing would be to loosen up the necktie I don't think he'll do that he says that necktie makes him control his emotions a little bit more habits a tighter the game too thicker the neck gets to in the loose of the time [Applause] 13 yard line [Applause] long we were talking [Applause] hate to go over all of our conversations but talking to did too about how he longed and some people said that he had had that good a year Mike Ditka said I'll take him he played for me it says one of the best I'll take him I he said not only I liked his ability I like his personality well and he like said you know our logs are work ethic type guy you know that hard-working guy that lines up all over the place goes 100 percent every I'm Zack back to throw it [Applause] not sure it was intended for [Applause] show that a Norfolk Court ago and will they go [Applause] [Music] so they'll settle Kevin Butler is successful for another field goal 3 3 tie at the moment [Music] [Applause] Tom sack is the holder will be a 30-yard effort [Applause] but first kick 6:3 lead the readers with 456 left to play [Applause] the Bears lead 6-3 in the bottom of the ninth we're at the Los Angeles Coliseum Pat Summerall John Madden that's how the Bears got it done 13 plays they went 60 yards 708 they kept it Kevin Butler 30-yard field goal 6-3 Mura Stefan Adams back deep for the Raider Butler's kik is a good one it's going to be Bueller [Applause] on the stop [Applause] but you can see where the Bears have to win today if they win then they get the day to host the first playoff game if they lose today then of course the Redskins would post that first playoff game and as the Bears were saying that we want someone to have to go through Chicago if they're going to do this thing of course when they do if they win today play that first playoff game in Chicago this can't be the quarterback he assured me before the game that he'd be round here's Mark Wilson [Applause] five yards Maurice Douglas made to stop it the one thing about Jim McMahon being back in the and the Bears will have two weeks they won't then next week's a wild-card week then they get two weeks to get ready but Jim McMahon won't be taken over a well-oiled machine here no indeed an assistant machine that had 11 turnovers and two weeks and hasn't been able to get in the end zone today [Applause] Wilson gets it in the direction of Marcus Allen Wilber Marshall was on the coverage a lot of people say Jim McMahon doesn't belong in that great category with the Marino's and the co czars or whoever but he's the guy who makes things happen and as Tom Flores was saying the great ones holding number 58 defense first down Wilber Marshall he said the great ones you don't have to teach great ones we'll get it done the good ones you can teach and make them better but you can't make them great the great ones know how to get it done McMahon is in that thing especially if the criterion is what it should be and that's winning results first Raiders nothing nothing their loss of two by Richard dent well if you're not going to block Richard ed then you better get into that hole quickly once your debt starts to the outside no one blocks them and Marcus Allen was jitterbugging in that backfield so when you do that and you don't block them then you're not gonna have a play usually if you start jitterbugging he'll make a dent second and 12 [Applause] [Music] second a flag Mike Ditka was complaining there was three protests there did cuss out there in the field loft and ran towards one official and fence for together teller dick can't get off the field what she did will not do chansik says hey get out against the Raiders that's why I did fire you don't have to feel ants against them [Applause] for the push there nonsense it was on vesti Jackson he pushed number 24 I think that's what made did you get off the field not not the official telling him I think fencing come over and said hey coach it's against them that will calm a coach down put some spring in that gum past interference number 80 offense penalty declined [Applause] [Music] tell you one thing dick is lucky that when he walked out on that field right throw flagon [Applause] they normally do that don't they I had one thrown at me once for doing that so like I said normally they do the [Applause] take off with it [Music] [Applause] they all Harris [Applause] made the stop number 90 [Applause] fourth down and portico goes back for the bears and tally we'll hunt I guess for the Los Angeles Raiders clock running to 41 left to play 6-3 the [Music] [Applause] or to go lets it bounce against a member of the Raiders the Raiders ball [Applause] the return team you don't want to touch the ball at all the ball touches your you touch it then the Raiders recover it's their ball that's what they're saying it's alright why if the Raiders touch it too versus the ecosphere he does touch the kicking team and first touching prior to position change and then the subsequent fumble consequently the receiving team gets the ball at the spot of first touching first down the Raiders touched it first the Raiders touched it before endorsing they did was I was awfully close I have no idea what Duerson was doing in there why he jumped on my idea that that ties a record by Gerry seaman for the longest penalty call of the year [Applause] Parker was number 81 in the Raiders get touched a chef before doors Terrie Robinson brought down after a gain of 7 Raiders take a timeout [Applause] two minutes and 11 seconds left to play the 49ers in New Orleans the seats have already won today their record in the division 4 in 1 and 49ers also Ford 1 but they play in the division tonight so if they lose to the Rams the Saints will win the NFC Western Division then it also went the whole fields around so whoever if the 49ers win then they're gonna have the home field trap to play off and win in division if they lose the Saints would have it the division in the home field throughout these guys of course the Bears have to win today to get home field for the first playoff game so it's going to be Minnesota the Bears Washington San Francisco in the playoffs still not sure who's going to be the wild-card set up until what happens tonight between the Rams and the 49ers I would bet you talk about the 49ers for the team's being on a roll it looks like to me if there's one team in the NFC that is on roll-up 449 I would expect them they'll beat the Rams tonight and they'll have the home-field throughout so Minnesota would then play in New Orleans next week how is the Goodyear blimp airship as they call it Columbia based in Carson California piloted by Charles Russell of Downey California second and four [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yet Kara's his 18th carry yet picked up 82 yards now he has 85 we get them two-minute warning 6-3 the bear one here at the Los Angeles Coliseum bears have the ball they leave six to three third and very short two minutes exactly lat [Applause] Payton and soui that Surya [Applause] Raiders have two timeouts remaining and here comes a penalty flag flying first down Tom's that get enough but we'll have to wait and see what the penalty is [Applause] [Music] a lot of guys saying what are you gonna do in the offseason personal foul unnecessary roughness number 55 defense Matt Mill understand Milind was coming close to that all day it seems like everything there'd be a play over pillow to be there argue with this guy or that guy and finally within the last two minutes they get him remember the game where he knocked somebody out of bounds and then started counting he stood over to counter him to ten count bear first down they move into Raider territory first enchant at the Raider 48:47 call it [Applause] Sooey [Applause] Sooey let's do it gain of two perhaps wrought Martin on the stop this game is presented by the authority of the National Football League is intended for the private use of our audience in a rebroadcast or the use of this telecast without the express written consent of the Los Angeles Raiders and the National Football League is prohibited there's an interesting conversation Matt Millen was talking first to Kurt Becker and then Matsui came over and he started to the conversation with him he started her with backer this Becker just goes about like a let's see what I got here under my arm pad he just ignored him Lana Washington is pulling him back and then Suey comes in so he said well we're both from Penn State I'll straighten this out just running down some of the scores of this afternoon this one particularly Detroit beat Atlanta and it would appear that the 1988 draft order would be well it's gonna be that way Atlanta Detroit Kansas City Tampa Bay and Cincinnati could be some trades but you look at the potential top picks well you know and there's really not that that great player there you know like last year was Vinny Testaverde and that type of guy it's not really that type of year that you're playing to get the first pick for this time no quarterbacks [Music] [Applause] first over there and again the Raiders take a timeout [Applause] 141 left to play here they are Watch Hill at number 55 he's going to get him a couple more shots before this season's over just let me have a couple to remind me what it's like so I can carry with me the whole offseason that is a final score of course the Saints beat Green Bay and the Saints ninth straight win and first playoff competition ever Joe Morris had his best day of the year Giants peaked two Jet's Philadelphia over Buffalo and that's a shock to everyone I'm sure 4120 Kansas City over Seattle Houston in the playoffs the Cardinals out of the playoffs if the Cowboys finished in a hurry Indianapolis over Tampa Bay and Denver assuring itself of playoff hopes leading San Diego there's Jim Plunkett their fan and we were talking to him yesterday's 40 years old he really didn't play this year but he got ready to play then he had to have surgery before the season started he was saying yesterday he would like to play next year and that's going to be the thing in the offseason but who's gonna be your quarterback I don't think it's gonna be Mark Wilson rusty Hilger didn't do the job do you bring back a Jim obviously they're going to have to get a guy somehow to me pluck it doesn't look forward and maybe the Raiders got it back it was Pakal [Applause] at 31 something the Bears are just trying to run out the clock they stray they need in the shotgun formation that handled to hand to Payton underneath ball handling running a sweep to the right gets the lane here good good defense by the Raider he sees Jerry Robinson number 57 as he hit him he just popped the ball right out on Payton Rader ball at midfield mark.wilson out of the pockets of artisan good defense over in a hurry Mike Singletary eyeball to eyeball with Marcus Allen I don't understand this kind of football I mean you get a big play like this and and you have to have something somewhere where you can get the ball up the field I mean you throw a pass for a 1 yard game I don't understand I really do they give you the ball and finally you can admit me a bull they go back out of somewhere it's go to work go to work again on second and Wilson [Applause] feel the Todd Christensen that first down stop laughs insect that's more like it I mean get out there roll out boom popped it up to field rice they won if the beers want to give you the game go take it take it away and Wilson stops the clock hammer has the ball into the ground [Applause] philosophy Artie but he was doing is just saying that that was okay that's a new rule that is you're not being rush you can throw the ball away to stop the clock not just opposite over on the sideline Chris Barr who's had a tough day today three kids walk [Applause] [Music] dan [Applause] hurry back fellas [Applause] the same page as James lost in there I think they fouled up this area here because all they have to do first is get into field goal position they don't have that yet you need about another five six seven yards to get the field goal he have a good shot at then go for your touchdown they're out of timeouts that mass incompletion of course stops the clock right now would be a 53-yard field goal to throw spores down so now we will have to go for the first down [Music] [Applause] and on the left side - Christiansen Todd Kristensen the Bears watch grunt Todd Christensen there's vesti Jackson he was on him he was on him on the line of scrimmage ran underneath them all the way and then Duerson was over double-team I think that's Tom Flores reaction not only to that play but to this game and the whole season that's the end of a nightmare he hopes the year as he said to us has been a nightmare [Applause] wasted down get a sack throat to end completions that's another thing 6:3 clock running with 25 seconds left Mike Ditka and his bears headed for the locker room Raiders headed for the end of a very very disappointing season many ways John I guess you'd have to say it's been a disappointing finish for the Bears as well now the type of thing that they were looking for is they had a shot once it having the best record having home field throughout they lost that when they lost to the 49ers then they lost two in a row and they never really got it going again so for John Madden this is Pat Summerall saying so long from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum where the final score was the Chicago Bears six the Los Angeles Raiders three the blimp was providing bears aren't exactly roaring into the playoffs they got by the Raiders by hitting two field goals and by hitting Raider quarterback if you want to call him that Mark Wilson early and often it ended six to three bears welcome to bear sex-crime Howard Sudbury and the Bears are gonna be home for the first playoff game after going 11 and 4 in the regular season and al Harris sums up today's win pretty well you know when's the win right now we just needed to get a victory more than anything else it was ugly victory you know I'm no down my mind but you know we just need to get a victory they got the victory the Raiders didn't do much on offense here James Lofton thought a much Wilson pass for 21 yards but that didn't work very much for them Chris Barr came on look at this wound deducted he kicked it hit a teammates helmet and it still goes through 48 yards three to nothing la Bears tied it up the same way Mike tomczak drops back to pass had plenty of time Willie Gault was hoping for 19 yards the drive stalled and they called on Kevin Butler and Butler hit it it goes to the right side and the Bears tied at 3 to 3 now Maurice Douglas started a quarterback and did a good job almost making an interception here Mike Ditka kids Eamon says he dresses funny but plays well Douglas has an answer to that today is just one day and hopefully next week I'd do the same thing when we play again the Bears had a good shot at a touchdown here from the 4 yard line Mike Tomczak kept it and went around the right side he dives and gets hammered at about the 1 and it was a hard hit Tom Zack talks about what happened there call a sprint out right and I had an option to throw to Ron Morris on current or you know run for the endzone and yeah we caught him a man coverage and you know I sell a corner to endzone Becker cut milind on I believe and Stacey Turan came up and you know said hello to me basically and I don't know got the best of it and I asked him after the game he still remember something I guess was a draw after the tomczak play the Bears had fourth and goal from the wand Jim Harbaugh come on and he tries the quarterback sneak he was stopped right at the goal line just short then the Bears moved again Mike tomczak drops back to throw for Rod Morris he gets it to set up Kevin Butler when there's the completion to about the 19 yard line Butler comes on then from 30 yards to win the game for the bears 6 to 3 now what did the Bears need to do to win through the playoffs here's Dan Hampton we have to have a sense agency we haven't had that in the last you know six six seven weeks we've got to realize what we're in a do-or-die situation and if somebody doesn't realize that they don't have any business plan for the Chicago Bears because the guys we have in this room the majority of know that the you know this is a must-win situation from here on out and that's where we're going to approach it dan Hampton after the game Barre coach Mike dick two talked about how badly the Bears need Jim McMahon to make a run at the Super Bowl and he says the fridge is out of the starting lineup until he Slim's down that and more with coach Ditka coming up next on bears expert [Music] back for bears extra because we're right here on the floor of the Los Angeles Coliseum where the Bears beat the Raiders we're gonna talk to you right now about the situation and Mike one thing you said all week last week if anybody's gonna go through the playoffs they're gonna have to come to Chicago you turned out to be right well somebody's got to come through and that's where it's got to be and we're looking forward to that we're looking for that challenge we reached our goal our first goal is gone and making the playoffs I think a lot of people overlook that sure we had we had two games in a row which which we got beat in when we got humiliated in in San Francisco but you never know you are in life you sometimes have a chance to make up those games and that this football team would get up in somebody's face right now I feel that very much I was very impressed with the wood the toughness we played with the aggressiveness the defense really kind of saved the often say couple times I kind of had to like that not imagine they say this all day but offensively we did some good things who we forgot how to get in the end zone but you know then again I think there's some experience there and I think that when we get the triggerman back I think that can get better well I really I thought we ran the ball pretty good I thought Walter played very well in the game he made he made the last fumble I don't know that could happen anybody but I mean I was unfortunate to happen but you know way he just got to put it away a little bit better but other than that he I thought you did a lot of good things and I was gonna talk Matt and Kelvin haven't contributed in though everybody helped well let's talk about some of some of the guys Maurice Douglas some of the people that you put in be responded pretty well looked like wow he's a good man you man covered gonna you'll hit a bump and running I've seen here in he choked each opening laughing on last things of that offense and you can stop that guy you did help John fencing how did it seem like he did okay I think he did very well I mean I think he was instrumental in putting those guys in the right spot back there a lot of the time our linebackers played very well dan Hampton inside I thought you did a heck of a job Ward your house key is he out I had gonna look good well he played good too I mean unless he didn't play good less the guy he played against must win sleep because I never saw the guy he was playing against to do anything Kurt Becker my kind of player he's a street fighter and you need some Street Fighters and you got to have guys that will go out there and maybe they don't look 40 and they get dirty and they slobber on themselves once in a while but they're also out there knocking the crap out of people so most of the changes that you made these players are gonna have are gonna be playing action I don't see why not yeah I don't see why not why should we sit around for ourselves you know I you know opportunity to key to success is grab an opportunity to run with it these kids will grab what I've given them and they're running with so until they stop running okay now the offense did sputter somewhat tomczak oh boy John how many balls are dropped in the first half mmm-hmm I don't hear about sputtering plays were right there wide open we drop three passes key passes for first down now what do you call that sputter you don't blame brought her back from the coach for that well you drop me bad but it was not an offensive machine you only scored six points I mean I I'm not taking away from your victory you scored six points now you I thought and I thought it was a jog or not I thought it looked like the German Sherman tank army I thought we were great on offense we must have been looking at different games but you won the game and that's the that's the main thing sacks you got some sacks looks like dent came alive and you did change where you moved to Hampton inside is that gonna stick yes it is we're gonna go with it right now we're gonna go over I think right now Dan will be a tackle from the rest of his career I think that that only says one thing you read it right I can understand it yeah the guy's gotta lose weight you get down to where he played defensive end house McKinnon's need that I don't know he didn't look very good he couldn't hurt his knee because he shouldn't have made the play me that wasn't a very smart play on Dennis's part he knows that but he was just trying to make something happen he's been a little frustrated back up our turn we haven't been able to break a move but I he and world your house key will be the only two bad ones the other ones with bumps and bruises okay the big one McMahon you're confident now that he and covert we probably ready for class John I would say no you play if he had to go out to in a wheelchair anyway there's no quick way you're gonna keep him out of there I think he wants to play and he will play and he's gonna be good enough physically to play Colvard I don't see any problem I mean he ran this week I think one more week a little bit of practice on it this week not too much and then I think we turn a loose that following week and he'll be ready okay black field goes this turned out to be one of your strong points tendon Sharon think we have been winking that might be a record I'm not sure I haven't checked retro but I don't know if these excellent points are people I think it's ten somebody said but if it is that's a credit to really Hampton and dent and and I held Harris and the refrig because those are the guys who do with those front floor they get that penetration he seemed to get those guys unbalanced yeah and the fridge pushes the gap and they and they come through and then when he one two three and out but Steve worked with him on that okay now when you were down on the goal line to talk about this game specifically you chose to go for the to go for the quarterback sneak then was that because it wasn't a play on a playoff game situation you would have taken the field taken point but I think in this situation our defense is plan I really thought we could score there's only half an hour John like that the quarterback and I think if if Jim when he came up so quick he came up right away and then many glasses and a little stayed low even one right in behind the center but you know it's an experience you learn that if you can't score there you shouldn't score we shoulda scored on the played before but Keith never got out of Mike's way you can get out of his way Mike Norwalk McMahon can he run there right now it's in the last couple of days how much hot would has he been running a hundred percent or 80 percent hadn't run at all yes I'm here to run involved so we'll start running this week and I'd say he'll be running about 95 percent by the playoff game now at the time we're having this conversation I don't percent of the game Sunday 95 in Saturday I see that's gonna be on Sunday I can tell you that it'll be a Sunday game in Chicago Bears are a big attraction stadium that's right there were 80 86,000 yeah god bless little Chicago Bear good for something lot sounded like more their fans didn't how do people don't like us but if we're good remember a job at this time that we're having this conversation you could be hosting San Francisco New Orleans or Washington your assessment do you have a choice I mean people are gonna say obviously you hope it's not San Francisco obviously I hope it is San Francisco that would be my choice because you know they would be a wild-card that's right that's right and I would love to get them in there and we'd love to get them in the cold weather and I don't care who they got or what they got you know and and maybe maybe we aren't as good as the 49ers I want one more chance to prove it off and then preferably in Chicago well what definitely degree we got to go there we'll go there if chances are it could be Washington did you get a chance to see the game yesterday yep well you know we've never played well against Doug Williams he's always kind of hurt the Bears I like Doug would like I think he's a winner you know I was glad to see him come off the bench you know he said then have how quality starting quarterback I don't know how good you either kid he is but he beat us last year but Williams I made the plans when they had to make him that and that's a good and their defense made the players when they had to make them good John and then that's a sign of a good team you know I think Joe does a great job with with the Redskins and and I think that you know maybe the two weaker teams will be the Redskins and the Bears going in but that may not be the fact coming out well what about New Orleans we haven't talked about them now they're good football team how good they are I don't know we'll find out you mean they're a good football team a Green Bay game all they could handle the day the thing that they seem to be able to do very well is get turnovers they're plus 20 some and not only get turnovers but they're also scoring the points after they get them so there's got to be something to what they're doing they've got a balanced attack of running and passing the ball the defense they seem to bend but not totally break they give up from points but they never seem to really get blowing out we worked against him at camp I was impressed with their personnel then John and they've changed a lot of that personnel to where it's much better now so they got to be a lot better than they were back when we worked against them now you have made the decision to stay home and work out in Chicago I was coming we're gonna do that and we're gonna get it done Wednesday Thursday Friday and Saturday morning and then the next week you would go out of town is that that yeah that's my plans right now and I don't see that that'll change Christmas turned out to be pretty good for you thought it was better for my family than for me but I think the thing is John that you know I don't really worry about yeah the thing you got to understand is wish had some goals and then one was a play option I was like I talked to Tom for it before the game says Mike the whole thing is to get to the playoffs he says you don't worry about the record as much you get to the play and then then it becomes a whole different decisions it's a new season it's a second season it's a three-game series and you know anything can happen in a three-game series and I think that's what we have to understand now we we have a job for position and people say I don't get we jogged in the Central Division of the national football at American four or what if it's a wicker division fine we're happy to be in it but we got in it we're we're in position two teams are in the playoffs out of that division I know that no we'll just see what happens from here on out you know we got to play people Minnesota's got to go play something Minnesota's a fine football team anybody that takes em lightly is gonna get a lot of problems the Chicago Bears have to have Jim McMahon to win a Super Bowl well I would say when we analyzed our football team last year that's the decision we made but we had to have Jim McMahon I think in all fairness to Jim McMahon we're truly a much better confident football team I'm a better coach with Jim McMahon on the field we're all better coaches because he makes some things happen and our goal is to keep him on the field for three more games three more games this year I mean 1988 okay well best of luck congratulations and on the home field and who knows it may work out you could get hold of him all the way this may be an Emmy show okay thanks Mike good luck and we'll have more on bears extra right after this timeout [Applause] welcome back to bears extra while the lineup changes that Mike Ditka made this week seem to work pretty well and you heard him a minute ago say he was very happy with him especially with the defensive changes Gary fencing was a starter in his last regular season game and Gary talks about how he played I thought he played pretty well I could have covered a little closer on the tight in and a few times but I didn't miss any tackles I didn't have to make a lot I guess that was the best news but I played fairly intelligently I think if there's one play that I felt good about it was the open field tackle unlocked and so we can all play better than we do you always have glory dreams about 200 seconds and this and that I wish they happen you know you you I'm sure you're downplayed it last week but you must have been a little bit nervous that hey you hadn't played for so long and to come out and do as well as you did you got to be very satisfied Johnny I have to be honest it's a long time since I've had to wait that long to get into play and I was little nervous but I played with a lot of those guys and they made me feel very comfortable and pumped me up the whole game and I think it's really important to get some good licks in early you know where a guy is just about to go down he has no choice but to take the hit and once I got those and I felt pretty good and overall I was pleased Mike Ditka said they won't that's the way it's gonna stay - with all those changes I know Moe Douglas played really well at corner I know he did and I think we communicated well the line put a lot of pressure on Wilson and I think we played a lot of enthusiasm but we met the challenge and didn't give up a touchdown so that's what you have to do and now we have to get the offense being more productive and I think they will - the Bears win the Superbowl we can't and I'm hoping so because it's my last chance is McMann a prerequisite do you think you have to have it man yes I do I think that this is almost unfair - and it's not a criticism Mike tomczak but I think that Jim makes the audibles and changes the entire offense so what you've seen the last month or so and also there's a charisma there's a leadership factor and we just have all the confidence in the world because he's done it and I don't want to slate my time's up but I think it's absolutely clear whether we have McMahon back to get to Super Bowl Gary fence again Mike Ditka says he will stay on the starting line up into the playoffs les something changes between now and then you heard his comments on McMahon everybody seems to be an agreement the Bears need McMahon if they're gonna make it to San Diego and the Super Bowl but how is Jim McMahon well we asked him today McMahon Wayne made the trip he was on the sidelines in Los Angeles with his friend Bruce Willis and McMahon says he is coming along okay with that hamstring pull but he is not 100% as of yet I'm planning on starting that playoff game or not I'm gonna try to get it as good as I can but it's won one week every game from now on the Super Bowl you lose you go home so I'm planning on playing again how do you feel physically what have you done that there's a cold where they're gonna buy the other smell oh it's not gonna help but I've been getting treatment on and it's starting to feel pretty good but I still can't run very well hopefully if we get our running game going I won't have to just being on the sidelines watching what are the things that you can point to that have been a problem [Music] why not Jim you been in trouble before he must have gotten that cigar from Mike Ditka on the sidelines this afternoon Jim McMahon is you heard him say he's gonna start on the playoff game but he it's not 100% not really running as of yet it'll be important for the Bears to get Jimbo covert back on offense too well you cannot look any better than the San Francisco 49ers did tonight a 48 to nothing win over the Rams Joe Montana is back for the 49ers he had not played since getting hurt against the Bears a couple of weeks ago Montana came back but the 49ers really didn't need him they jumped on the Rams and they won their division it's all San Francisco Steve Young started a quarterback hit Jerry Rice Brice set another record with a touchdown catch 13 games in a row this is Joe Montana to John Frank as the 49ers were doing anything they wanted to and more Montana had quarterback here and came into the second half here he drops back and hits Mike Wilson over the middle and Wilson gets to the outside number 85 is gone and the 49ers beat the Rams 48 to nothing the 49ers are home as long as they win in the playoffs now earlier today Dallas put Minnesota into the playoffs by beating st. Louis here is Herschel Walker going 11 yards to the Dallas touchdown Cowboys led the game 7 to 3 and they never trailed again in the second quarter at the 11 yard line again it's again Herschel Walker he's headed for a touchdown 14 to 3 Dallas was whipping the Cardinals and on the sidelines their mascot was doing the same thing to the st. Louis Cardinal mascot but before halftime the cards got back into the game Neal Lomax a quarterback drops back and hits JT Smith and was 14 to 10 Dallas on top by 4 at halftime but Dallas led it by 5 into the fourth quarter their defense stopped the Cardinals and this bad snap helped a lot the yellow max got to the ball and he got the pass off but it was incomplete and the celebration started in Minnesota that put the Vikings in the playoffs 21 to 16 Dallas wins today now some of the other playoff teams first the Saints finish out the season at 12 and three and a wild card team but Green Bay played well here Don med Kowski to Walter Stanley Stanley made the move of the day after the touchdown stay with him here watch a flip there that make a gymnast jealous and the Packers had the lead in the game the New Orleans came back at him Reuben Mays gets around the right side and into the end zone and the Saints won at 33 to 24 and what a mess out in Denver today - brave fans are trying the wave or something to keep warm the Broncos were sure warm it was a blowout look at the fans of the stands they're sledding down the aisles watch this unbelievable will run back of a punt Kevin Clarke tackled there at least the Chargers thought they had him then he bounces out to the outside he's skating along cuts back the other direction still doesn't lose his balance and he has gone all the way this is 71 yards for the Denver Broncos they took the lead at 7 to nothing they are the home field in the playoffs now the Eric Dickerson showing he ran for 196 yards today against Tampa that was six yards to make it seven to nothing Colts and the Colts are in the playoffs for the first time in Indianapolis history the Baltimore Colts made it back in 1977 and Houston is a wild-card team Oilers beat Cincinnati alonzo highsmith makes a great play here as he knocks for Bengals out of the way I wonder where those guys will play next year Houston beat Cincinnati today by 4 and then Seattle is in the playoffs as a wild-card but Kansas City beat him today Steve Largent the Seahawks caught 6 he has 752 for his career a new NFL all-time record but Kansas City won and Seattle gets into the playoffs but they did not look very good today so let's get to the playoff picture right now this is the NFC wild-card situation because st. Louis lost Minnesota backs into the playoffs they finished the season at 8 and 7 and we're not playing very well at the end Minnesota will have to play down in the Superdome against New Orleans New Orleans finishing up at 12 and 3 now for the three divisional champions in the NFC it's San Francisco Chicago and Washington if New Orleans wins they come to Chicago for the first playoff game if Minnesota wins Washington would come here the Bears have the home-field advantage over Washington in the AFC Seattle and Houston will play the AFC wild card game both teams at 9:00 and 6:00 and the divisional champs in the AFC Denver will have the home-field advantage Cleveland and Indianapolis the other champions there and as they say on the TV commercials you make the call see what you think of gayle sierens who became the first woman to do play-by-play of an NFL game today surance called the Chiefs Seahawks game for NBC i'm gayle sierens along with dave row we'll be bringing you the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Seattle Seahawks [Music] [Applause] Kayle surance an anchorwoman with the florida TV station first woman to do NFL play by play and by the way dan Hampton and Dennis McKinnon are going to co-host a channel to Sports special next saturday at 6:30 if you have a question for either player write in to us at channel 2 that's bear's ex Ron Howard Sudbury thanks for watching and good night
