come this fall George Preston Marshalls Redskins will really be on the warpath with a great new team Eddie and I of course will be right where the action is with play-by-play accounts live on television brought to you by amico and now from amico the exciting film highlights of the 1959 Redskins games [Music] [Music] the Redskins band oldest and best in pro football is a familiar and beloved part of the Redskins organization made up entirely of volunteers the marching Redskins entertained at every home game and have traveled with the team to many cities around the nation [Music] here come the Redskins [Applause] [Applause] the 1959 Redskins open the season against the Cardinals in Soldier Field in Chicago the skins are trailing in the third period but Eddie LeBaron gets the moving with the pass to Bill Anderson who fights to the Chicago 25 with the Redskins camped in the for LeBaron hands to dick James and dick dashes over to put them in from Dixie and the scoring column [Music] after yielding a tally to the cards the Redskins ride the touchdown trail on a LeBaron to Anderson Pass Eddie LeBaron looks for receiver again dick James's loose to make the catch and he races to another touchdown in a 28 point third quarter there's more to come in the final period King Hill has the cards on the go as he passes to Sonny Randall and the rookie from Virginia gets to the Redskins 29 MC Reynolds takes over at quarterback and he says he reminded his Hill MC connects with Bobby Conrad in the end zone Ralph coyame guides her Redskins as they keep right on trying its don bosley with the ball barreling to the Chicago 30 [Applause] giulio me hamster dick James and the hard-hitting halfback jars to the Cardinal 14 James gets the ball again and sweeps the left side to score as the skins matched the Cardinals tally fruit alley throughout most of the second half but the rally Paul short its hail to the Redskins at the home opener at Griffith Stadium Mike Nixon's men are thirsting for revenge against the Chicago Cardinals this is their chance to turn the tables the cards take the opening kickoff but the Redskins defense moves anisette meadows of Duke recovers a fumble the Redskins call on dick James for a rough trip to the Cardinal 24 the skins turn on the power Dick James puts down his head and hammers for six more yards Don Foster picks his way through the traffic to make it goal to go on the six Vossler Bulls over for the score the Redskins whoop it up with a seven nothing lead over Chicago cardinal razzle dazzle momentarily bedazzles the Redskins its body Conrad passing to Woodley Lewis for a 31 yard game King Hill is running the Chicago attack he hits John Tracy in the right flat and Tracy makes it to the 38 here's a spectacular play by the cards Hill passes to John crow crow laterals to Woodley Lewis who tosses to Hill who fights for a few extra yards the cards turn on the ground power with Mal hammock scrambling over the middle for a first down [Applause] he'll drive straight ahead for the touchdown Chicago ties up the game at 7-7 it's still deadlocked late in the third period the cards have the ball but not for long as mal hammock fumbles and Hanson Churchwell and Mississippi recovers for the Redskins Belleville Yomi dances back in passes four points Phil Anderson has the Cardinals defense beaten as he completes a 57-yard pass run touchdown the Redskins lead 14 to 7 after three periods in the final period the Redskins are on the rampage again William II leaps and passes this one is aimed for distance and Joe Walton is down field is shayad for a 51 yard game Giuliani hands to head Sutton then Sutton scampers around right in for nine yards the cards pour in on Ralph Kagame but he gets the pass away and Johnny Oh chef ski has it at the five carolina's ed Sutton turns in for the tally as the Redskins dominate the Cardinals by a final score of 23 to 14 earning sweet revenge for their opening day setback and giving Griffith Stadium fans of victory to start off the home season the Redskins travel to Forbes Field to meet the Pittsburgh Steelers the sturdy Steelers already on a victory over Cleveland but the Redskins have some strong medicine in store for the Steel City men Valkyrie Ami starts at quarterback for the skins and he has him hustling he hits Bill Anderson for a 17 yard gain [Applause] Giuliani goes to the Aragon Joe Alton Spears his tosses a Redskins move to the Steeler 14 [Applause] Sam Baker is ready when fourth-down rolls around Sam's placement is perfect and the Redskins enjoy a 3 nothing edge over Pittsburgh the skin stall a second quarter stealer drive and return to the attack with goooo me firing the don bosley on the pittsburgh 39 [Applause] it's 4th and 2 at that point as Sam Baker steps up and calmly belts the ball 47 yards for his second field goal the Redskins are on top of a six nothing score the next time the tribe gets the ball Eddie LeBaron promptly moves him into Steeler territory with a perfect peg to head Sutton the ball is on the pittsburgh 42 the redskins don't believe in punting anywhere in the steelers side of midfield Baker's 48 yard placement makes it all the way at halftime it's Redskins 9 Steelers nothing in the third quarter pilot Ralph Yami's tests back mr. D and throws for distance Bill Anderson is under it and he's away to a 70 yard touchdown the skins have a 16 nothing shutout going over the Steelers [Applause] body lane finally gets the stealer offense under way he passes to Jimmy or and Pittsburgh is perched on the 31 [Applause] the Redskins won't give up anymore of their reservation but Bobby Lane hits the scoring column with a 32-yard field goal the Steelers are on the board but it's a skins lead 16 3 as a Redskins retaliate what's the action in slow motion Ralph Kiyomi looks and passes Joe Walton works loose to make the catch for a 33 yard game the ball is on the pittsburgh 28 [Applause] Giuliani is having his greatest day with the Redskins Ralph launches another rocket to Joe Walton this one is good for a touchdown the skins are way out in front at 23 3 Bobby Lane puts Pittsburgh in the comeback trail with this passing he picks on Darryl Brewster with the pits worth 12 yards of territory Lane has his sights set on the goal line Bobby puts a pass into the right flat to Darryl Brewster Brewster is off down the sideline for a 30 yard touchdown after three quarters a Redskins lead 23 to 10 [Applause] in the final period the Pittsburghers go all out to pull Ethan Lane keeps throwing and Brewster keeps catching in the Steelers moved to midfield the Steelers are beginning to look like the team that blasted the Browns an opening day laying this one to Jimmy or and the play earns 14 yards Larry Cutco crashes across in its 23:17 but the Redskins defense is perfect from their own end and that's the final score a big victory over the potent Pittsburgh Steelers the Redskins run into a rough afternoon in Philadelphia's Franklin Field home base for the Eagles the skins are hoping to duplicate their 1958 sweep of the series but the Quaker City men have other ideas the camera moves in closest Philadelphia's Billy Barnes breaks loose the former Wake Forest flash a native of Landis North Carolina wheeze for 61 yards and an eagle touchdown [Applause] now the Redskins whoop it up nan Bosler Sprint's into the Eagle secondary breezes by the birds on a 41-yard touchdown trip but Philadelphia boosts its lead to 32 9 going into the final period the Eagles have the ball here but Norman Van Brocklin throw boomerangs as Ralph Alden intercepts and returns to the Philadelphia 42 [Applause] nettie LeBaron opens a fourth quarter by passing to Jim padule-- on the Eagle 23 [Applause] the Redskins polish off the drive by sending d'en bas they're banging for the touchdown it's 30 to 16 as a skin strike back [Applause] the Redskins defense forces another break as the ego's Clarence Peaks fumbles Bogdanov makes an alert recovery on the philadelphia 28th Anita Maron and Jim Benelli make quick work in the final few yards as they hook up on a 6 point pass that puts the Redskins within reach of a tie of 32 23 there's about a minute left as LeBaron fades deep and hurls downfield Bill Anderson has it and almost makes it into the end zone but the ball is declared dead at the three [Applause] only a great goal-line stand saves the eagle victory is a redskins outscore them 23 to nothing in the second half missing the time touchdown by a fraction of an inch on Don Buster's fourth down pun [Applause] and now the Redskins get their second chance at the Eagles it's North Carolina day in Griffith Stadium and the Redskins would like to take this one to honor their Tar Heel visitors but a North Carolinian is making things tough it's Billy Barnes toting the ball for Philadelphia to pick up 26 yards [Applause] Norman Van Brocklin zeroes in on Tonya McDonald for the score as the ego stage a 20-point uprising in the second quarter [Applause] at halftime the Redskins suit the North Carolina representatives on both spies governor Luther Hodges of North Carolina is flanked by Eagle Tar Heels Jerry who Sonny Jerguson and Bill Barnes representatives head Sutton and ed Meadows pose with Tom Aldridge of the American oil company [Music] the five North Carolinians are playing their hearts out to make it a big day for their home state the Redskins are famous for their halftime entertainment and North Carolina's Reynolds high school band sets out to make this one the greatest ever [Applause] let's watch the well-drilled youngsters go through their paces as they delight the crowd in Griffith Stadium [Applause] [Applause] the dancing boots take over with acrobatics and rhythmic numbers the rentals high school band and the dancing boots hail from winston-salem the performance represents months of preparation and practice under the direction of Robert Mayer [Music] [Applause] the Redskins opened the third period in slashing style Eddie LeBaron backpedals and fires a cross-country pass to dick James that covers 48 yards but the officials detect a holding violation and the play is nullified [Applause] LeBaron overcomes a setback as he pinpoints Tennessee's bill Anderson to complete a 22-yard pass play [Applause] Johnny Oh chefs key displays lake power aplenty with the charge through the middle that picks up 15 yards [Applause] as the egos bracelet on goes overhead Kim MacAfee breaks free to pull in the pass for a touchdown the Redskins move closer at 20 to 7 in the final period passing again plagues the philadelphians LeBaron hoists along one through the dusk in gym fado Lee makes the catch at the 45 [Applause] the Baron is really on target today this one goes right over the medal to Anderson for a 25-yard touchdown as the scans show plenty of offensive fireworks on North Carolina day but failed atop the Eagles Griffith stadium is packed as the Redskins go all out to earn a split in their two game series with Cleveland the Browns Bobby Mitchell provides one of the big thrills of 1959 as he turns the corner gets a good block from Ray Renfro and Sprint's 90 yards to score on the year's longest run from scrimmage Cleveland takes a 7 to nothing lead [Applause] the Redskins have a rugged run of their own and pull back Johnny Oh chef ski Johnny Oh finds daylight in the middle of the line and leads the Browns a merry chase on a 65 yard rush to the 15 [Applause] dick James slants into the end zone for the first Redskins score of the game it's 14 to 7 at the end of the first quarter Johnny Oh chef ski gets loose again in the second period he gallops 37 yards before the Browns can collar him [Applause] dick James takes a turn in the left side of the line makes room for him to roam on a 22 yard frost into Cleveland territory johnnyo who groped the Redskins single game rushing record in this game with 190 yards rips 419 of those yards to cap the rally it's a tie game at 1414 [Applause] milk llamas plaguing the Redskins in the third quarter he connects with ray Renfro for a Cleveland first down Lou Groza converts the cleveland threat into points with a 45-yard field goal that proves to be enough as a Redskins bow in the final period after battling on even terms throughout most of the fray it's Charlie Conerly day as the Redskins invade Yankee Stadium to meet the conference champion Giants and the New Yorkers put on an inspired performance to honor their veteran quarterback late in the first half Frank Gifford takes a handoff swings wide and fires a pass to Phil King at the goal line King goes in for the score and the New Yorkers increased their lead [Applause] Eddie LeBaron enters the game in the third quarter and fires up the Redskins Eddie pitches to Jim fotolia's the skins move to the giant 33 the Baron launches a pass into the end zone and Jimbo doll he makes a great leaping catch to put the Redskins on the scoreboard in the final period on Heinrich takes over as a giant quarterback he sends Frank Gifford around left end Frank gets behind blocking at the sideline and streaks for 78 yards before the Redskins him and end at the tree [Applause] now the Questor completes the drive with the dive for pay dirt New York has built up a big lead but the Redskins refused to quit Johnny Oh chefs key breaks into the open and races to a 33 yard gain Eddie LeBaron teams up with Bill Anderson and a touchdown pass that doesn't change the final outcome but the Redskins out score New York 14 to 7 in the second half after a disastrous first half and the stage is set for the rematch the giant rivalry is renewed in Griffith Stadium the New Yorkers have already clinched the Eastern Conference title but that doesn't all the Redskins the skins are ready to do battle from the opening whistle the Redskins put on the war paint early johnnyo chef ski takes a violent trip to the new york 30 with johnnyo leading the way head sutton carries on an eight-yard sweep around right in johnnyo is a blocking demon as he personally takes care of two giants while dick Haley hustles to a touchdown the Redskins lead the conference champion Giants seven to nothing with Charlie Connelly at the controls the Giants fight back Frank effort takes his pass in gallops 427 yards [Applause] the Redskins put plenty of pressure on Connolly but the 12 year veteran is a cool customer as he connects with rookie Joe Morrison for a touchdown after one period the game is all tied up at 7-7 [Applause] midway through the second period the Redskins staged another uprising Eddie LeBaron 10 points Joe Walton for a first down on the giant 38 the skins bounce back into the lead as Sam Baker puts his golden toe to work baker's boot boosts the Redskins into a 10-7 halftime edge [Music] New York strikes in the third quarter frank effort takes a pitch out and steps off 19 yards [Applause] Kyle wrote puts his uncanny knack for getting loose in the end zone to good use he takes Connolly's pass for the score as the Giants take the lead for keeps at 14 to 10 and are happy to go home with a victory after battling a determined band of Redskins the Redskins faced their bitter rivals the world champion Baltimore Colts in Griffith Stadium and promptly make them the victims of their greatest offensive and defensive effort of 1959 the Colts have the ball in the first period Lenny mower threads his way for 15 yards [Applause] the Redskins defense digs in and the coats settled for a Steve IRA field goal from 21 yards out Baltimore has an early 3 to nothing lead [Applause] any LeBaron sets out to put the skins on the scoreboard he hits Jim padule-- for 16 yards to close out the first quarter [Applause] in the second quarter LeBaron is still pitching strikes Joe Walden feels this one for a touchdown as they take a 7-3 lead over the mighty Coles [Applause] the skins get three more points early in the second half Sam Baker booms a placement over from 42 yards away and it's Redskins ten Colts three the Colts move frisk or as Johnny Unitas flips a slant pass to Lenny mower for a first down Unitas drops back and fires Goldberg Jim Mutschler is behind his man to make a beautiful grab for a touchdown it's a tie game at ten apiece [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the Redskins break open the grim defensive struggle in the final quarter Bill Anderson shanks a lebaron pass for an 18 yard gain [Applause] and Sutton takes a handoff from LeBaron pulls up and he's a beautiful scoring pass to Joe Walton once again the coaster on the short end as a Redskins take a 17 to 10 event [Applause] the coats have to fight from behind now the ball goes til anymore Lenny shakes off a short tackle races down the sideline and gained 65 yards before the Redskins secondary can catch up [Applause] it's gold to go and johnny unitas knows the way he zeroes in on jim Mutschler and the colts pull even again it's 17 all but the Redskins want this one badly LeBaron puts him in scoring position as he pegs perfectly to Bill Anderson at the coke 21 Laveranues having one of his finest hours in pro football he threads a needle with a touchdown pass to Bill Anderson bill just makes it in and again the Redskins lead 24 to 17 with less than three minutes remaining the coast try to pull it out Unitas completes too much learn the big end battles for 37 yards [Music] on the next play Unitas pitches out till anymore Lenny comes wide and fools everyone as he shoots a pass to Jerry Richardson the Colts have tied it at 20 for each with two minutes to go the Redskins are forced to give up the ball and it looks as if they'll have to settle for a tie until Tommy brats intercepts Unitas pass to put the skins on the Colt 39 [Applause] there's only time for one play but that's all it takes Sam Baker comes through from 46 yards out with 11 seconds left on the clock the Redskins earn a heart-stopping 27 24 victory over the world champion Colts in their top performance of the year hope you enjoyed these highlights
