the theme square off for battle this week Thank You Glenn and now here's miss Dodie Marshall large charming miss sandy fries of 1958 to tell our audience which games are scheduled for this weekend which game is number one Dodie well this week it's the game between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers to be played in San Francisco deception plays an important part in pro football here's the 49ers in field goal formation it's a fake little Joe eNOS takes and scampers into the corner for a TD that's the play the college's know job we'll be using often in 1958 now for look at the San Francisco 49ers modern-day Jeff Joe Perry he gets wide to tacklers but can't straight arm his way past this rugged defender who Bulldogs him after a gain of 18 yards here's a perfect example of the great protection afforded to pro quarterback why a tiddle has lots of time Billy Wilson grabs it gets his block and picks up 19 yards the 49ers are a team to watch if Joe Perry can duplicate this feet then keys our stadium will be a happy place on those football afternoons now for a look at the Rams they're receiving John Arnett takes it on his goal line look at the blockers four teammates look for someone to knock down and here comes Arnett he shows you the form that led the league in punt returns averaging 28 yards a carry it takes a heap of Dewan to drop this uncanny Ram star at one of their halfback spots is still another runner Tom Wilson takes a pitch out and follows his blockers to a first down Purdue's great end of a couple of years back Lamar Lundy is making a name for himself in the West Coast it's a long pass and Lundy Chuck's up six points here we see the new RAM quarterback Billy Wade joining Los Angeles fans that he's capable of filling the great norm Van Brocklin shoes as he completes this pass in their exhibition game against the New York Giants football on the west coast reigns supreme it's not unusual for up to 200,000 people to jam the stadium's over a weekend intercollegiate football on Friday and Saturday and the favorites Rams on Sunday not only in Los Angeles but all over the country professional football is adding thousands of fans every year a hard running halfback many times is the key to a championship here's RAM halfback Ron Wallace showing you we can twist and turn along with the best of them yes it takes all kinds to score a touchdown and what the Fras it's the touchdown that counts here's the play the Rams will probably use this week it's called East g.x corner white post now Clark the yn will run a pattern to the goalposts Lundy the xn will run a pattern to the goal line Arnett the halfback will run a hook now the quarterback will fade back and has an option of either passing to Arnett Lundy or Clark it's a good play watch it now miss antifreeze what's our next game cleveland browns versus the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh but before we see them in action Glenn has is one of his guests Jack Butler is the Pittsburgh Steelers well your honor by having with us the number one defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers Jack Butler Jack was one of the co-leaders in the national professional football league in pass interceptions last year a very well liked boy among his teammates and is now in his eighth season with the Steelers Jack was it your childhood ambition to be a professional football player I never thought much about professional football because I knew very little about it I ready after a great school I went away to Niagara Falls Ontario to a prep school I thought at that time was becoming a priest had is that a football player I know you've played football at st. Bonaventure College how'd you get started there in 1947 I went up to st. boys to go to school and it was crowded right after the war then I got put in a room with three other men and they were all football players and that's all I ever heard up there it was football they're talking about this than that tackle isn't yeah so I figure I have to try this game see what it's like and so come spring training I went out with the rest of them and to see what this game was all about I enjoyed it very much if you never played football before how did you know how to put that complicated equipment on my roommate kitten New Jersey we went on together and they gave us all this equipment shorter pads of five pads and more kind of pads and I don't know what they were I had a big dagger arm full of pants pads and didn't know what to do with them so in the locker room I sat beside my roomie there and he'd take off his shoes I'd take off my shoes he he took off his pants I took off mine and they put his pads on his short pads I put mine on the same way and that's how I got to know how to put the pads on and well we were not to practice that day and so the guy next to me was about my side she's about five foot nine but of course was a little difference in weight he was about 225 I was about 40 see so I said to him what do you play and he was a guard Easter almost guard it's when the coach was coming down along the line he asked him ease that garden come to me so what do you play boy I said I'm a guard he says you'll never make it one day the coach is looking for a halfback he's Horn who's a halfback and nobody answered yes again who's a halfback he has to three times and nobody said anything so I figure what the heck so I walk on ice down the halfback he so I thought you told me you're a guard I said no sir I'm a halfback so I was just kind of lucky cuz that's how it's all started right there Steelers are pretty lucky too by the way were you drafted by the Steelers no I wasn't Glen nothing like it how'd you end up there they called me one day and answer I'd like to try out me I figured what the heck I was only about a hundred eighty pounds I figure that well I might as well try it see if I can do it jack you made the team as a defensive end didn't you how'd you end up as a halfback well that's kind of a long story to blend see I wasn't offensive end and at that time they had they had an all their team all set with offensive ends was a room for another so I made the ballclub as a defensive end and thus far as being a halfback well it just so happened that that year we opened up with the New York Giants it was a night ball game in Pittsburgh and I think I played about three minutes of the game as a defensive end and the second game was with the 49ers in Pittsburgh and I was sitting on a bench and joined the game and coach hard Butler so I figure I'm going in I run in the game and I say to my hey like it was at that time as a defensive end I said Charlie I'm in for you so he runs off the field and I'm standing in there and he couldn't run alone back in again he said hey he says you're not in for me says you're in for Fink's who was a defensive halfback and I said I don't think so he said you're in for a fing skid that's how I started the defensive halfback and what a start it was Jack are you a married man I sure him two children are born a girl how long have you been married a little over two years that's wonderful Jack since you played football for quite a few years and to most players that's foremost in their lives do you think football is the most important thing in your life well Glen I'd say this I love football I really enjoy playing football but the most important thing in my life would not be football I imagine the probably the most important thing in life would be or the belief in God well professional football can be mighty proud of outstanding men like yourself Jack thanks so very much for a most interesting story the best of luck to you in the future look Kaitlin thank you very much now let's watch the Steelers and browns in action the Steelers and wipe an enemy pitch out goes astray and there's that fine defensive halfback Jack Butler grabbing the ball just before it goes out of bounds real heads-up play let's watch another Pittsburgh player in action here's number 10 quarterback Earl Morrill getting rid of the ball Justin then a good time Chuck Girard makes this fine catch to Harris the Washington Redskins in the final game of the 1957 campaign [Applause] the field goal is an ever-present threat in pro football and here's the way it should be worked like all great football machines the Cleveland Browns are well fortified at the all-important quarterback position here's Milt plum unleashing a strike to his great right and Preston carpenter he sidesteps a defender runs by three more and has finally hauled down from behind a good quarterback must do all things well here's plum pitching back to Rookie of the Year fullback Jim Brown and the Syracuse all-american displays his blinding speed and amazing powers he glides over first score now watch milk plum at his best he fakes a handoff goes into the protective cup can't locate a receiver spots an opening and shoots up the middle gets a good block and heads for the sidelines he almost goes all the way but is stopped inside the enemy 10-yard line looks like the same play again but watch plumb gives to carpenter on an end-around catching the opponent's completely by surprise carpenter picks up one two three blockers they do their job and carpenter is convoyed to a touchdown the prongs boast a famous brother I you just saw Preston carpenter here's brother lo looks like he's caught but this well-placed straight arm gets rid of this tackler however it's not enough and he's dragged down from behind here's the play the Pittsburgh Steelers work very well it's called 27 cutback it's simply the two back going through the seven hole now the quarterback fakes the pitch out to the fullback keeps it hands it to the left halfback going off tackle and at the same time the right halfback delays a little bit comes down and puts a block on the defensive halfback this is a real good play what's next Mazzanti freeze we'll have a guest interview and more action shots afterward about to thought Xerox antifreeze be winter safe in summer sure on a winter trip or a summer tour stop freeze ups and rust ups with miraculous even get DuPont lyrics antifreeze when rust develops in a cooling system it can cling to the walls causing rust buildup which slows down even stop circulations results in overheating only Xerox keeps your cooling system chemically safe with mr8 DuPont special rust inhibitor by reacting chemically with the metal surfaces of the cooling system mr8 forms a chemical armor against rust and corrosion as a result your cooling system stays chemically safe all winter long so get zero ex ante for you then make it snappy and you'll be winter safe and summer happy one filling of seasons all this direction heed well you see this time you'll find it's guaranteed or free refills Baltimore Colts play the Chicago Bears in Baltimore the Bears to have a great quarterback here's that Brown at his best with a pasta Jim delay that backs up a first down [Music] also operating from the bear quarterback slot is George Blanda no doubt this is a pathway it's a long one too that's Jim Dooley again a perfect pass and a perfect catch for a bear TD let's take another look at Ed Brown same pass play from the bears famous spread formation Brown pauses then throws and hits Bobby Watkins who takes it out of the hands of a defender who misses the tackle but manages to loosen his shoe you don't believe me there it is it's one shoe off and one shoe on Watkins as he scores [Applause] here's Baltimore showing you how they give their great passer Johnny Unitas plenty of protection as they form a cup around him Unitas lifts a 63-yard pass to Ray Barry that protective cup is vital to a successful passing attack [Applause] a great passer knows how to throw to a spot here's the spot on this play you might as must know when to throw the ball now watch closely here's the ball and the receiver again the two get together it was a struggle but as you see the referee signals touchdown Baltimore the kickoff is called one of football's most exciting plays with the prosit stubbly so Baltimore receiving cotton Davidson takes it on his own goal line sees no place to go so laterals tool anymore who turns on the speed a blocker sends one defender sprawling and Lenny more fashions a touchdown that carries the length of the field [Music] you're much farther than that but George Halas back coaching the team the Bears the team to watch this year what's next miss antifreeze it's time for our mystery guest Glenn what's the matter fall well I'm just trying to figure out our mystery guest from the hint you gave us you said some may think he's a cowboy but actually he's only fast on his feet and not on the trigger I don't get it I'll see what the scrapbook says now he began his career in Columbus Ohio he played halfback for Central High School where he made Allstate two years in a row here's the headline taken from his hometown paper blank blank scores for touchdown the central high winds 27 to 6 he went on to greater fame at Ohio State where he led his team to two Big Ten titles do we have any action shots of him Glenn yes I do watch upper left-hand corner of your screen as you can tell he's really a speed burner once he gets in the open in early 1956 another headline was seen in the columbus paper blank blank athlete of year winning both the Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award at the same time in February this headline appeared in the Detroit papers Detroit's number one draft choice blank blank last jury caught six touchdown passes for the world champions oh I know his namesake was televisions first big western star right I like the fans to meet this week's mystery guest from the Detroit Lions Hopalong Cassidy hi hoppy I'm gonna throw a quick one at you all right Glenn what's your favorite play touchdown plays that figures nothing like getting behind that safety man would you rather go up the middle following those husky pull backs or around in well I I liked sweeps with the big ugly tackles leading I know that once you get into those wide-open spaces you're a hard man to catch you know I found a great difference in training methods in pro ball as compared to what we did in college have you noticed a difference since you've been with the Lions well I do a lot more running and throw ball than what you did in college although in college we scrimmaged a lot and did a lot of other things which we don't do here in pro we run a lot of pass patterns and work a lot more on execution of our plays we're in college you spent most your time screaming Jean and preparing for Saturday we're here you prepare for the whole season how often does Detroit scrimmage during the football season we don't scrimmage at all the season starts would you tell the fans what your practice sessions consists of well we use the have calisthenics run a few Sprint's once the team goes into training camp our families are very much neglected I mean we don't go home we eat our meals here we have a four hour a day working period two hours in the morning two hours in the afternoon we spend several hours during the day at meetings I know all the pro clubs eat together but the Lions take this opportunity to indoctrinate the rookies it's much like pledging at a fraternity they're required to sing their school songs on a modder or fight songs where they might have [Music] the reason a voice saying Glenn is to make them feel like they're part of the training camp they're part of the team and it sort of takes attention off of practice and it sort of relaxes them I know we didn't ever win the offensive award or defensive award statistic why's that we seem to win the championship and I think that's because the ballplayers all play together and we have such terrific team spirit you sure are right happy team spirit can make an average team great that's why the underdog can win pro football has given a lot of boys an opportunity to get a good start in life especially if they plan to have a family are all the boys on your team Mary quite a few of them are married you know I'm married and had three children most all the ball players on team are married I'd like to meet your family if I can well I wish you'd come over and meet him I like to introduce my family Glenn this is my wife Betty my son Craig my daughter Rainey hi Betty hi Craig looks like you got a mighty fine family is this all of them no we have a little baby about two months old David those long weeks of training when you had to stay right there at camp must be awful tough on your family how do you like that handsome husband a year at being away so much I don't care for it too much Glenn Beck I really appreciate when he does come home after the training season's over with that's wonderful I'm sure hoppy is mighty glad to get home too especially when he has such a big reception waiting for him we certainly do appreciate you letting us come visit you and we're looking forward to see some of those thrilling widened sweeps when you're in action with the Lions thanks Betty good luck copy Thank You Glenn now let's see hobbies team in action the Detroit Lions shown here in action with unpredictable Bobby Lane at the helm when he sees his receivers covered as he does on this play Lane has the running ability to chalk up a vital first down on his own this effort netted him 27 yards he has a brilliant running mate - here's hoppy as he helps support that pretty wife in three children with a touchdown Tobin Rhodes turn now to show you his tremendous ability as a passer and watch this catch by gerry reich ow it's a beauty oh we missed it well what do you know he's got it but the players don't seem to agree what is the referee say he says you've got it now to watch the Lions on defense [Applause] an enemy aerial flies dangerously close to the Detroit goal safety man Jack Christiansen shows how to defend against a pass by intercepting Jack was one of the co-leaders in the National League in pass interceptions last year this interception returned the ball 53 yards before he was tripped up [Applause] Tobin rode in charge of the Lyon machine rolls right keeps gets by a tackler and gets the Lions in scoring position the Detroit Lions another top-notch football 11 now for a look at the Green Bay Packers also in white uniforms quarterback Bart Starr gets it away just in time to Al Carmichael who has batted down at the goal line a good quarterback has to know how to piledrive to here Bart Starr does just that as he chops up a six pointer here's Green Bay on defense want to know how to Harris a passer watch this Green Bay lineman and see he doesn't go through him he goes over them and it pays off as Henry grabinger intercepts with the help of some timely blocks he gets it back deep in enemy territory rushing the passer is a primary objective of any defensive team a passer who doesn't have time to aim well often throws into enemy arms [Applause] here's a beautiful play to watch a quick look in over the middle and Green Bay lights up the scoreboard here's another look at Green Bay's fine defensive unit at work the ball is batted away from the receiver John sigh max makes a bobbing interception more than one defensive unit is turned defeat into victory with plays like this keep your eye on rookie dick Christie from North Carolina State he may be the Packers ace in the hole and now for our next game the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles here's the Giants close to the Rams goal line in this year's exhibition game it's a handoff to Alex Webster who scores Webster has been the Giants running threat on this play quarterback Don Hinrich it's Webster with a short pass and Webster shows you the form that makes him one of the game's toughest runners Charlie Conerly is another of the fine giant quarterbacks here he hands off to Frank Gifford in their RAM game watch this amazing run through the entire LA Rams team and school number 11 Don Heinrich is in a quarter again he takes his time calling signals as he looks over the defense he calls for Alex Webster and what a call it was Webster displays his ability to take advantage of his blockers as he Springs for a big 33 yard game with Heinrich Gifford Webster and company on the prowl the New York Giants to have to be considered as a threat each week and they always tough national professional football league the Philadelphia Eagles have the ball Bobby Thomason was the Eagles number one passer last year here's one of his great passes to Billy Barnes if you give Barnes and n she's liable to take a mile as he did in this TD John now for a look at Barnes in slow motion he takes a handoff then with knees high he shows you the power and elusiveness that makes him one of the game's truly great runners watch how he gives this would-be tackler a leg to get him off balance his ability to change direction with lightning speed is phenomenal Barnes effectiveness as a runner coupled with Van Brocklin passing gives the Eagles a combination that may take them to a national championship [Applause] Barnes finally gets caught after a brilliant 41 yard run [Applause] the Eagles are off to a good start this year with some outstanding exhibition games they should provide a lot of good football for the Philadelphia fans Norman Van Brocklin should make the Eagles a real contender in the Eastern Conference this year well Dodie what's our last game for this week it's the game between the Washington Redskins and the Chicago Cardinals to be played in Chicago the Washington Redskins field general is bryggen little Eddie LeBaron here this vine ball handler keeps and Chuck's up a first down let's watch that ball handling of his he gives the Leo elder who proves a rough man to bring down as he too registers a first down now for a look at Eddie laverne's passing arm he fades and lifts a beauty the Johnny Carson gathers in deep in enemy territory Sam Baker and field goal position it's a fake before the enemy can recover Sam Chuck's up six points instead of three with the pro's defensive football is as exciting as the offensive game here's the Cardinal spine defensive halfback Frank Bernardi making life miserable for the opposing quarterback the intercepts and zigzags his way back upfield to bring a resounding cheer from Cardinal boosters here's card quarterback lamar McCann with a perfect heave to Woodleigh Louis and Louis shows you the blinding speed that leaves many an opponent clutching at the air the Cardinals can spring a surprise on you too halfback Joe Childress is taking to the air that's Holly Matson on the receiving end he shakes loose from one tackler but another dumps him out of bounds now let's watch the great Matson at his best he grabs a short pass from McCann he dances by 1-2-3 tacklers and into the clear but he's finally covered from behind after a brilliant 53 yard run the Cardinals are ever dangerous with Ollie Matson in their lineup let's watch that Cardinal pass defense once again the cards on defense looks like an enemy touchdown but it's a fumble and that's Cardinal and Chuck Webber scooping up the ball and carrying it up feeling out of danger [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the DuPont company maker of CX permanent type antifreeze presents see the pros with Glen Davis and here he is mr. outside himself one of the all-time greats from the United States Military Academy as well as a former star of the Los Angeles Rams professional football team Glen Davis thank you Paul Matheson hi sports fans glad you could join us once again as we see the pros both in action and in interviews we have a very special guest whose background as most unusual we have our mystery guests as well now let's see how long it takes you to figure out who it is I'll give you a little hint he was an end who wasn't an end you got an idea who it is Paul she Claire not the slightest but I do have an idea that we should hear a message from our sponsor the DuPont company maker of Xerox antifreeze presenting the morning race for the 802 what kept you same old trouble at the top of maple street hill they overheated installed what's wrong with me rust buildup in your cooling system don't just need antifreeze protection you need rust and corrosion protection too right this minute thousands of wise motorists are having their servicemen installed DuPont directs antifreeze with mr8 mr8 is DuPont's special rust inhibitor that keeps your cooling system chemically safe all winter long you see mr8 reacts chemically with the metal surfaces of your cooling system to form a chemical armor against rust and corrosion thanks to you pal I'm chemically safe the blood see Rex protects your car all winter on one filling guaranteed or refills free wherever you see this sign now Glen do you have a script ready on what to watch for in this week's games right here Paul well there's lots of action coming up this week Thank You Glen and now here is Miss Dodie Marshall our lovely Miss antifreeze of 1958 to tell our audience which games scheduled for this weekend game number one Dodie yes the Baltimore Colts are going to play the Green Bay Packers at Milwaukee here's Baltimore on defense one of the old important facets of pro football is past defenses with the cults they have defenders like John Herman number 20 the former UCLA flash you galloped in to intercept and an enemy threat is thwarted now on offense here's Baltimore's great quarterback Johnny Unitas at work he gets great protection spots his man and let's fly it's a perfect flow turtle anymore Moore gets in front of his man and is off for a cult score Lenny Moore and Johnny Unitas at their All Pro best let's take another look at that Baltimore fast defense an enemy aerial bounces off the intended receiver and Johnny Herman again displays his alertness as the interceptors but that's only the beginning of this story watch Herman runs a tight rope and goes all the way converting an enemy threat into a Baltimore six pointer [Applause] now let's take a look at Green Bay the Packers find quarterback babe Verrilli shows how to connect with the past - max McGee who heads for the goal a defender presumes McGee he almost gets away but a desperate lunge trips him up and he doubled on a bomb now watch the Packers combine deception with passing after making a handoff Verrilli shoots one to Ferguson who lunges over for a score a good quarterback must make quick decisions here Pearlie unable to spot a receiver does spot an opening so he scrambles straight up the middle to chalk up a first down before he's two times [Applause] Green Bay relies on its running game - here's Bay Pearlie again pitching out to Don McIlhenny hate is by good blocking McIlhenny twisting turns his way for a 30-yard game before he's bounced out of bounds this is a play the Green Bay Packers will use to take advantage of the tremendous speed of Billy Hatton it's enough pattern run by Houghton to get the halfback to play to the outside then fade in back of him quarterback will throw a long pass and Billy Hatton with this tremendous speed should get under for a touchdown it's called 56 up out not what's next now for game number two who's who of this one Dodie the San Francisco 49ers versus the Chicago Bears in Chicago and Glen you have a great member of one of these teams is your guest this week those Midway monsters from Chicago once again are figured as top contenders for the Pro Championship as at all successful football teams its what's up front the counts the bear forward wall once again must be figured among the best in the business this week on see the pros I want you to meet one of the toughest blocks with that line he was an all-american of Maryland and played several times in the all pro games here he is the great Stan Jones hi Glenn get yourself comfortable Stan I'd like to ask you some questions you've been all-pro three out of four years which year did you miss my rookie year Glenn that's understandable you've played both offensive guard and defensive tackle since joining the Bears what are you playing this year I'm going to play tackle Glenn it's a switch from guard for me which do you enjoy most well I enjoyed the position of guard for three years and then the year before that I played tackle so it's actually going back to what I started the position that I started with what are you doing the offseason I teach school in Washington DC what subject do you teach well last year I taught physical education but to here before that I was in the first aid department and there before that I was teaching problems democracy how do your students feel about your being a pro football player well they're not too much impressed really I think that boys now in school is fine anyway if the boys in school think more of what you can do when they're there and when they can see you actually do it and what they hear that you can do I know that at school if I get in and do some push-ups with them that impressed or if I can climb the rope weighing 250 pounds hand over hand to the top that they can appreciate but what I tell them I can do it doesn't impress them too much or what they have heard that I have done can you climb that rope hand over hand yes I do I didn't do it the first time and I didn't go out the first day and climb the Rope a hand over hand I did practice after school quite a few nights before I was able to do it and I didn't let them know that I couldn't do it the first time I tried in four years of pro ball what was your greatest thrill well I think it was back in the about three years ago in the Pro Bowl game on the west coast on the opening kickoff my man is we had a count off blocking situation where my man happened to be the safety man and I was determined to get him and he kept giving ground and it turned out to be the safety man and Christiansen was right behind me I said keep going Stan I'm right behind you I was trying to get Lane I believe from the Cardinals was the safety man at that time and he kept giving ground and they used me as kind of a pillar in between the Christensen using me as a defensive blocker and 105 yards for a touchdown but the funny part about that is after the the game was over I thought well I'll take the piss paper back and show it to my wife and show her what a good game I had played I thought was pretty good but the trouble was I picked up some newspaper after the game and said that bud McFadden had led Christmas in 105 yards for a touchdown so it was merely my word when I got back that I had done I have a picture of the all-star Pro Bowl game to show the fans would you like to see it I certainly wouldn't I think I'd like my wife to see that one too I don't think she believes me yet that happened here's the opening kickoff of the 1956 All Pro Bowl game in Los Angeles the East kicking and the West Jack Christiansen takes the kick three yards deep in his own end zone heads back upfield picking up blockers with a burst of speed jack gets by three would-be tacklers and who's leading the interference why it's none other than Stan Jones the Chicago Bears great lineman with Stan zigging and Jack's sagging the West is now six points ahead that was quite a run Stan it must have been quite tiring oh it certainly was and then right after that I had to go back on the kickoff team and I was quite tired but that type of thrill doesn't come very often well I'm thanks a lot for being with us a lot of Lexi's dance thanks like well he sure is a big guy Glenn and now let's see the Bears and 49ers in action though the 49ers boast a potent passing attack their running game should not be overlooked here all League fullback Joe Perry squirms and fights for every inch and almost breaks into the clear but a shoestring tackle downton now for a look at the passing of why a tiddle he can't spot a man downfield so he shoots the safety valve the pro football's great ball packer humic Eleni McIlhenny is that his best till the defender puts the clamp on his jersey and you is forced out of bound why a channel is called one of the National Football League's handiest field generals and here's a good demonstration as the out maneuvers the animators score [Applause] let's take another look at the fantastic running of you McElhenney a block Springs him around right end and that's all the King needs he puts on another patented McIlhenny special and these zig zags all over the field living awake of tacklers at is he got plenty of blocking but virtually makes it on his own till the hard driving tackle floors him on the enemy 5-yard line watch the upper left-hand corner of your screen for a neat pass battery flight Connor rushes at the halfback cuts to the corners John Brody passes to the spine touchdown 49ers [Applause] right future has been predicted for young Brody here he is an action again he waits till the right moment now watch this catch on the goal line by Billy Wilson he makes an unbelievable catch that's the little extra effort that makes good players great their opponents the Chicago Bears both top-notch quarterbacks too here's that brown passing to the former pride and joy of Illinois JC Caroline who makes a fine falling cat from there and brown works this perfect pass pattern into the enemy end zone its plays like this that makes pro football one of the world's truly great spectator sports now a bro look at the Bears on defense it's a funding situation in pro football you can expect anything such as thrilling plays like this bear halfback Ron dries wiki takes it on his own 41 gets a good block runs in reverse until another block sets up an opening and he heads up the sidelines somehow eludes a handful of defenders stays inbounds gets by three more and with two tacklers and hopeless Brazil goes all the way the Pittsburgh Steelers demonstrate one of the prime offensive weapons of pro football the field goal this one splits the uprights even top pro quarterbacks make occasional mistakes to prove they're human here Steeler Earle morals pass goes astray the tackle and Burnett saves the day in pro football assignments are vital watch this kickoff to illustrate what I mean look at the blockers form they do their job and it results in a 30-yard run back let's watch that stealer line open up a hole big enough to drive a truck through its unsung heroes in that line that helped pave the way to crucial first down now if we look at Pittsburgh's passing attack Earl morale in charge if you can do this often Pittsburgh will give its fans a real season another Club to watch is Philadelphia and white ace runner Billy Barnes almost gets them to clear but his opponents get a timely assist from the ref and Billy is dragged down this year the Eagles passing attack is bolstered by the addition of Norm Van Brocklin the Ducks would acquired in an offseason trade with the Los Angeles Rams figures to give the Eagles the added offense he threw out they've been looking for either mud nor rain hinders the excitement of pro football here the Eagles found at the enemy's door it's a big pileup of humanity in the goo did he score it's a touchdown and clever weather doesn't dampen the enthusiasm for pro football the Steelers are building and will give everyone plenty of trouble what's next miss antifreeze our mystery guest is due up next Glenn and Paul sure looks puzzled what's the matter Paul Oh Gladys I was just mulling over in my mind what you said about this week's mystery guest so what's your problem well you said he was an end that wasn't an end well if he wasn't an end he could never have been an end in the first place and if he wasn't an end in the first place he well I just don't get it I think the scrapbook will tell his story now he first appeared on the support pages of the Los Angeles newspapers where he became a touchdown Idol at manual arts high school he was the all-city Player of the Year when he dawn to lead to togs for Southern California he became even better the first time he entered the game as a sophomore here's what the papers had to say about him reserve sophomore halfback catches three touchdown passes a few weeks later another headline sophomore half named National Player of the Week all this because he scored 28 points to set a new school single-game scoring record well I got the last part he wasn't an end but what about the first part wealth after graduation he was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams and became their number one end today he's a halfback so let's meet him the one and only John Arnett hi John oh yeah nice to have you with us today John you recently out of college football and I'm sure your memories are quite vivid what day our games stand out in your mind is the most thrilling Oakland I believe was in 1955 when we played Notre Dame in the Coliseum the time Notre Dame was nationally ranked I believe they were somewhere in the top ten and buses Trojans were having a very mediocre year we were five and four at the time and we went into the game of heavy underdogs and we beat Notre Dame that day 42 to 20 are there any particular plays that stand out in your mind well - one of them was a fake field goal that ails Kissinger faked on their 21 yard line and - to myself for a first down that helped us go ahead and the other was one that Jim contrato too was the 50-yard pass when he was trapped and it was over Paul Hornung I guess everyone knows Paul Hornung and we betta beat him on that play there I think John the college record that must stand out most in your memory is the feat of averaging nearly six yards with 336 carries the only word to describe your running is phenomenal and the amazing story of your career is that protac furs have found that chore of tackling John Arnett equally as difficult as college players here's a perfect example in a game against the 49ers under terrible weather conditions it's a kickoff and the footing is sloppy you take it on your own two yard line set up the middle and bounce off a tackler spin away from two more another misses one more is blocked and as unbelievable as it looks you twist and turn your way into the clear and you travel 98 yards to a touchdown John do you attribute your success as a runner to your days in the manual arts high school tumbling team Sherwood later in the game you take a pitch out around right in looks like you're hemmed in at the sidelines but somehow you break into the clear and you show your dazzling speed if you go all the way following that run the fans gave you a standing ovation must have been quite a thrill that was one of the biggest satisfactions I've had in provo you were the number one draft choice the Rams and found yourself playing in when you were a star halfback in college would you tell our audience just how that happened well first of all it came about when I was a rookie a few ends that were slated to report to camp didn't show up for various reasons business mostly they were Ron Miller and Bob Kerry and then the Elroy Hirsch got hurt in the long beach game with the Rhinos and E Rex and it missed and necessitated putting someone over it in that hadn't played there and do the fact that I was a rookie and I hadn't learned any one position yet they felt that I would be the one that go over there and I went over there last year and then when Elroy came back I played a little bit of halfback and in both and your experience in pro ball both as a halfback and a flanker back or and in which defensive men give you the most trouble well I would say from a halfback standpoint that Gino Marchetti is as tough as they come he's the defensive end for Baltimore and also Joe Schmidt from Detroit he's a tremendous line back
