wi-fi sheep would like to say a huge thank you to all of you that kindly support us help us continue to bring new videos like this join patreon.com forward slash wi-fi sheep from just one dollar a month [Music] hello everyone hayden and welcome back to wi-fi sheep right here on youtube with me tom and what has been a frantic 24 hours at time of recording yesterday which was the 20s i have the 27 28th i can't remember now of october 2021 the raspberry pi foundation released announced and released the raspberry pi zero two w yeah it's a catchy name isn't it well half asleep in the morning i ordered one i then kind of crashed online um here on the channel live to tell you the news uh and we waited for one to arrive in the post hence this morning a day later one has arrived courtesy of her majesty's royal mail and we'll get right into having a look at it and see if it's any good so i thought today we would revisit one of the most popular videos here on the channel that's when i said could you make a desktop computer using response zero four dollar raspberry pi zero original as it was then that video has done so well on the channel and i think it's about time we recreate some of the tests there to see how the new zero two matches up however before we continue do you have a need for reliable and cost effective web hosting for your blog business or personal website if so then look no further than cheap host uk cheap host uk's basic plan starts from only 58 pens per month that's 6.99 a year and if you're in need of a little bit more cheapos uk's premium packages start from or domain name from cheapest uk use discount code sheep that's s-h-e-e-p to get an extra 10 off for reliable cost-effective web hosting and domain names look no further than cheap host uk full details and affiliate link are in the description to this video [Music] now at time of recording there isn't much in the way of operating systems or software to actually work with the new device it should be fine because it's actually a die from a raspberry pi free chip the arm cortex core that that used with a new memory layer sitting on top so it is a new processor we've not seen it before it's bespoke for the pi foundation but it is actually broadcom architecture at the time of recording the only os that officially works is raspberry pi os that's the form of raspbian linux which is built on a debian linux base and that's what we'll test today however i do want to try a few others including things like retropie and our own risk os which i have a feeling the latter will need to be patched and that'll be a different video so let's get into this have a look and see what we make of the brand new raspberry pi zero two so here is the envelope which has come in a standard powdered envelope um all the way from man enterprises limited to buy an awful lot of stuff from them so let's just look inside and there we are in a sealed bag and that is the brand new raspberry pi zero 2w is it block [Music] that's all right does it block zip lock rather sit on there and there we go there's our first look at the brand new board and yeah there's a few changes you can see in fact let's find and bring over the box from the last video where we did about the desktop this was the wave share device and so this was the hat that sat on top of the board and this was the original and it was very original raspberry pi zero uh this one's actually from the first batch so it didn't even have the camera connector this was one that was on the front cover of the magpie magazine back in 2015 when the uh machine first launched for the port first launched so i put a header on it the header is not standard um so yeah you can see there's a few differences so the actual chip package is much larger on the new uh version 2 board and we also now have a can containing the bluetooth and wireless capability basically i believe that is a industry requirement for emissions and electronic radiation emissions testing for some internal industrial products that apparently these zeros have ended up being used for so that's why that's been added other than that everything else looks pretty much the same it's in the same place and periodically would be cross-compatible with all the cases boards and adapters etc so here's a closer look at the two balls this is the new version two this is the original and i actually found i still had still sealed as well let's get that out an original slightly later revision original uh zero here so that's the first one that was the sort of slightly second later revision where they added the um camera port moved a few things around slightly and then down here we've got uh the new one so this one's also where you can see the wi-fi antennae added as well so yeah it's quite stark differences between the boards uh mainly obviously the cpu is bigger the cpu itself by the way uh is i've got the technical details here so this is an arm broadcom bcm 7210a1 um which basically is a new piece of custom silicon using the die from the original broadcom raspberry pi 3 processor it's 64-bit it's quad core and basically it's running an arm cortex a 53 and the clock speed is set to one gigahertz you can perv that to the original here this is the original chip this was a single core 32-bit arm chip uh running in 32-bit mode only now i actually bought up during the initial discussion video yesterday about was this chip capable of running 32-bit code well i flashed a new version of the raspbian raspberry pi os and actually found out that it's all still 32-bit so of course this will run 32-bit software i have here a micro sd card that we'll use it's not a new card it's a recovered one so it's a eight gigabyte card a bit small really for raspbian linux interestingly none of the raspberries appear to have been updated since around march of 2021 so that does mean that they had the hardware or spec for the new boards the new boards this one here uh for some time uh and it does actually tie into when i first heard the rumors of a russia pie free powered party zero which would have been about two three years ago and that ties in with uh when nuptian talking on tom's hardware podcast last night said that they actually had a development board for this for about three years so the information that got leaked to me was actually more correct than i thought it was anyway what are we going to need to get this up and running today well in the last video when we did the uh can you use it as a desktop i had this wave share hat board that gave you uh networking and usb out uh unfortunately he's a header and i don't want to put a head on this today so this board is out for today's video however what i do have is an off-the-shelf usb hub with networking if you need it for ethernet in the end and it has the correct micro usb so we can plug that into make sure it's the usb not the power also make sure it's a great way around so yeah power is the outside one now the hdmi will need uh effectively upscaling in order to fit a standard uh hdmi that's the only thing i know about but i guess they did what they had to do it's better than the um horrible mini jacks they use on the pi 4. so we need a adapter for that and i have one here this one these little turny flexible adapters and i've used them all before so we'll pop that in there there we go and that'll give us a standard hdmi that we can connect our monitor in let's put our sd card now these go face up on the zero so that's in there and now what we need is we'll add a keyboard and mouse obviously i've got them just beside this little cheap mice and a keyboard that will plug into the hub and finally we need some power and we've got here my recipe free power supply so these don't use and can't use the fours because they're not usbc there's micro usb so this is my existing recipe free power supply and that goes in there so that board is now should be ready to go so we're all plugged in uh usb mouse and keyboard is in the hub here this whole thing has now become just a jumble wise which is why this is rather impractical and why the hub solution was a little bit nicer but never mind okay so we should be ready to go so this is the very first power of a brand new flashed version of russia pirates raspbian linux let's power up now i'm going for a capture card so hopefully you're going to see a straight image of what's on the screen i can see the rainbow boot has loaded now we're going to let this do an initial run uh before we do a time um just because it needs to do some setting up and we need to give it a chance to be fast so it's going to be slower on the first boot than it will be on future boots the good news is it does appear to be booting and i don't want to jinx it but that's already appearing a lot quicker than i remember it being on the original pie board so this is looking promising okay yeah this is looking very promising we got the initial setup so and it also wants me to change all the passwords so let's put the world's most worst insecure password in free let's say our security people you can uh lose yourself over there uh no it does not show a black border i'm pleased to say uh i will just skip networking for a minute skip that done okay gosh this this already feels a lot quicker and we haven't even done the time test yet so this is looking promising so let's try a speed test this was one of the most popular parts of the original four dollar video that we did so now i asked the question can a 16 raspberry pi zero two be used as an actual desktop system for this test we only have recipe os and we'll do the same kind of haphazard unofficial unscientific test that we did last time just to see how it works out let's find out how quickly the machine can actually now boot so we're ready to do a test the first test we've done on speed booting since we made the original video on can you use the recipe zero the four dollar version as a desktop computer today we're gonna ask the same question and we're gonna attempt to boot it with the pi zero two it's already looking like it's going to be a lot faster now last time stock raspbian linux or rusty pi os booted up in and it finished in two minutes and 10 seconds the rule of this are quite simple the machine has to boot and we have to open a file window and we have to open a terminal that is what we have to do within the time frame once the terminal is loaded we'll stop the timer it's not a scientific test it's a little bit haphazard but it'll give us an idea so i'm just going to bring up the timer on the stopwatch on my phone again and we'll put that here so unlike last time where i pointed everything at the screen uh you can see this will be down here and you've got the video feed so let's do a times from booting up power on to start so we're ready three two one okay that's looking promising so this has already been booted up once just to give itself the setup so this should be a faster boot and yeah you can already tell it's so much faster 20 seconds in and get ready on the mouse here because this involves me clicking a few things desktop's in and we're not in 30 seconds okay file a window prompt and we'll stop okay i was a little bit late on the stop but even at me being late i'll give it a second off for that so we'll say we'll say 37 seconds 37 seconds and we're there last time it took two minutes 10 seconds to do exactly what we have just done wow that is that is quite something i think you've got to agree that is quite something okay so we know that stock raspbian or raspberry pi os works okay actually it works really well what about some other os's at time recording there's no other os's that support this board right now but i just wonder if anything else would actually boot so let's try risco s direct i've got here is a resource pi 400 the pi 400 version is completely backwards compatible with supposedly with every other pi and it was until this one came out i don't think this is gonna work i think it's gonna need patching but let's just try just to see what happens okay right that wasn't expected that worked okay it doesn't even need patching that worked um yeah basic works hang on uppercase there we go i will just point out this version was set up for uh when i was out on the show at the retro computing festival in cambridge that's why it's got this strange background on um [Music] it still does run faster than linux but it can't make use of any of the additional ram or features so um yeah but that works that's okay yeah that's a good experiment so let's just shut this down so under this logic it probably means that things like retropie don't even need patching they'll probably just run so i've got retropie for the 400 pi 400 i don't think this is going to work because they have different versions but let's just give it a shot let's see what happens okay it's booted to a kernel wow okay this is working oh no okay it has broke we're getting excited then i think it's broken say now this is the russia pi 4 400 version not the one for the free so it's not exactly surprised that it doesn't exactly work but it got a lot further than i thought it would oh right yeah i think we might have broken that's impressive matrixy but i think we've broken that oh dear okay oh dear right i hope i haven't corrupted my sd card doing that yeah that's um i think that's what you call a kernel panic there we are i think we've hit the bottom of memory what we've crashed yeah oh dear okay so does beg the question though does if you've got retropie 4 or i supply 3 i'm going to make an assumption it might actually just run the others did so that's that's interesting and we've learned something today so in conclusion raspberry pi zero two w yes it's a little bit more money at sixteen dollars is it worth it yes i think it is absolutely worth it um it's faster it can do more and if you're running stock raspbian linux or hopefully some of the other os's when they get updated and they will be patched in literally a matter of weeks if bad it's probably by the time you're watching this video most of what i'm talking about will be irrelevant because it'll be patched i honestly feel the people are going to benefit from this the most are going to be retro pie users so this should be able to run n64 games at a decent frame rate and that's what i really want to try next time so to make sure you don't miss out do make sure you like and subscribe to the channel click the notification bell and if you want to follow me on twitter it's at wi-fi sheep that's wi-fi sheep on twitter and i post all new video releases and update information on my twitter feed if you're brand new to the channel thank you for joining me and i hope to see you real soon until next time bye for now [Music] [Music] you
