[Music] special effects have made the modern superhero movie possible in the pages of the comics if you need someone to have spectacular powers like tossing around cars or flying through spaceships or shooting beams out of your eyes all you got to do is draw it in movies drawing it is only the beginning you have to draw it then have a meeting over whether or not it be easier to have a computer draw it or for someone to make it the answer more often than you think is a combination of the two there are a lot of practical effects that is physical effects in Marvel movies and then there are some uses of CGI that might surprise you one of the hidden benefits aside from an infinite effects budget that a comic book can do is jump around in the time of the character they can look at any age at any time The Simpsons have been a young couple in three different decades by now it used to be if you wanted a younger version of a character you had to find a younger actor to play that person for a young Indiana Jones River Phoenix stood in that's the old way of doing it but now with modern CGI the same actor gets to be all their ages Marvel's go-to is to use the 2d method where the onset actor's performance is captured and then similar reference footage from earlier and their careers used 2d aged them frame by frame so for guardians of the galaxy volume two Kurt Russell's ego flashback sequence was a little bit today's Caruso and a little bit Kurt Russell from the movie used cars that hair makes total sense now at some point or another almost every Marvel character has been a younger version of themselves or in Captain America's case a smaller version of himself even samuel l.jackson though most of his d aging is that time is afraid of samuel l.jackson sure making someone look young is one thing you're making a person look like their younger selves the real trick is to slide in a different actor altogether and have almost no one notice during the filming of Iron Man 3 Robert Downey jr. suffered an onset accident resulting in a sprained ankle no superhero ever loses because of a sprained ankle strong ankle support is key to saving the day unfortunately there were a lot more action scenes coming up and not all of them were in the suit the production shut down for six weeks while they worked out what to do next instead of pushing back the release date they got a Robert Downey jr. body double and then captured footage from RDJ later for reference and inserted Robert Downey jr. in two scenes where there was no Robert Downey jr. including the scene where he tosses his old arc reactor in the ocean the tools used for this effect were based off the ones used to make a smaller Steve Rogers for Captain America the First Avenger sometimes the best effects are the ones that no one realizes is in effect in the first place this was one of the few times the excuse will fix it in post actually worked out ah spider-man spider-man does whatever a spider can spin a web any size stick to walls create a form-fitting athletics do with an intricate design on it that can stand up in a fight the suit has been the one can see that everyone accepts in superhero stories at some point some components of getting superpowers is being able to make a cool-looking suit that matches the heroes super powered theme it's either that or it's all motorcycle track suits and no matter what Scott Summer says yes we would prefer the costumes to just black leather teacher's pet to get spider-man's amazing spider suit the suit was dealt with both in the narrative and the filming Peter Parker got a suit upgrade thanks to Stark Industries technology and his suit got the proper look thanks to computer effects Tom Holland does wear a practical suit on the set that has everything but the moving eyes but between set and screen the digital paintbrush has taken to the outfit to hide zippers and seams and smoothing the suit out when it bunches up too much the rest of us just have to find a pair of pants that fit better there are a lot of moving parts in the making of a big-budget Marvel Cinematic Universe movie while there's a lot said about the all covering eye of the director the reality is that there are a lot of decision makers having to sign off on decisions on just about every aspect of the movie all of that has to happen while the movie marches forward once a schedule is set everything has to be ready that day unless it isn't and you have some really effective computer graphics in an interview with comic book comm effects supervisors Russell Earl and Bruce Holcomb couldn't say exactly why the quantum suits an end game were animated in after the fact the most likely explanation might be that the designs hadn't been finalized yet and the capture gave them more flexibility sometimes the digital suits will be used for ease of movement for the actor helmets are a big obstacle because so little time is afforded to wear the helmet goes when it comes off in the case of the quantum suits enough time to change their mind isn't the only advantage CG suits have since there were a lot of sequences that were going to have to be CG anyway like flying through the quantum realm it's easier to match the look if it's the same model used in every shot sometimes in a big production like a Marvel movie decisions can be made long before production begins only for people to change their minds after production is finished this is especially true in a machine like the Marvel Cinematic Universe with all the films standing on their own while also being tied into each other as part of a 23 film epic story between Thanos snapping out half of existence and the remaining Avengers tripping through time to bring them all back we got a glimpse into a free eye patch Nick Fury and his inspiration behind the Avengers initiative when he met the American test pilot who had become a super-powered space warrior Captain Marvel told the story of fury Zaisan the whole superhero even though she arrived too late to stop Thanos thanks to the complexities of filming blockbusters endgame was filmed first and then Captain Marvel during both movies she was wearing the same suit then someone pointed out that characters have been changing their outfits every two years as their movies come out and Danvers hadn't changed hers in almost 25 years so they changed it for her digitally one of the hardest things to animate is hair the human head has an average of around 100,000 individual hair follicles unless you're Homer Simpson then you have four or five all those individual strands have to be animated and what's worse as anyone who has ever had more than shoulder length hair will tell you all those hundred thousand strands have a mind of their own especially if you're floating in the vastness of space surrounded by the power of the space stone captain Marvel's costume wasn't the only change up for the spacefaring superhero in endgame she also took time to change up her hair something rocket isn't accustomed to apparently but the new do wasn't the only hair shenanigans behind-the-scenes photos show that during her space rescue brie Larson was wearing a hair cap meaning that the glowy floating space here was animated in later in the past in order to give characters hair a weightless field actors were filmed in a blue or green screen pool with all of the evidence of water being removed in post so that the character looks weightless in the vastness of space but filming in water incurs its own expenses and difficulty so instead Marvel took on the task in post-production animating Captain Marvel space hair with CGI reshoots are a product of finding out that all your careful planning and plotting didn't work out and you need to add something in or redo a scene in order for your movie to make any sense no matter how much time is spent in pre-production or how efficient the crew is during production again all the shots on the list inevitably there's something that just isn't working like it was planned or doesn't look like it was intended once you're in the cold reality of the editing room this involves calling back the actors who have generally moved on to other roles securing locations meticulously matching up the shots in the continuity it can be a really big hassle or you can decide that the facial scar is too hard to track in the fight between Steve Rogers and Steve Rogers and go back to the original footage and just draw helmet on one of them so that audiences know who's who which of course is exactly what happened in the cat versus cat fight in endgame initially a facial scar was supposed to separate the two Steve's from slightly different times but of course that didn't work so using the same technology they would 2d age character they added a helmet instead [Music] that airport scene in civil war was epic 12 of Earth's Mightiest Heroes including new arrivals Black Panther and spider-man square off in a German airport in one of these signature battles of the crossover film masquerading as a Captain America solo movie seeing all those characters share the screen was epic only it wasn't really them at least not all of them which is not to say that film crews didn't go to a German Airport aside from filming some elements they also mapped over 600 assets to digitally recreate and manipulate while the bulk of the fighting was motion capture not fine wood studios in Atlanta in front of a green screen the only characters that weren't animated in were characters that weren't wearing a mask or helmet and even a few of their shots were eventually scrapped and replaced with CGI that wasn't always the intent the fight was shot before Tom Holland was cast but there was a parkour stunt performer in a practical spider suit shot on location as well as a real black panther both heroes needed enough of a superhero upgrade that their performances became a reference for animated versions with Tom Holland adding in motion capture performances for his lines after he was cast in the role the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a delicate balance between artistic freedom and essentially telling a single episode of a larger story with 23 movies the infinity saga had almost as many episodes as a season of a traditional network television show only they were all around two to three hours long and had huge budgets and took 11 years to complete but otherwise kind of like a TV show one of those decisions was Thor's eye which went missing in Thor Ragnarok but had to make a comeback during infinity wars since he already had two eyes but that wasn't the only adjustment that had to be made once the decision to make Thor like father like son in the eye department eye patches can look pretty cool but sometimes it's hard to make a cool looking eye patch they port during intense action scenes during the course of filming Chris Hemsworth's eyepatch kept falling out until the decision was made to just draw the eye patch on digitally of Cour that infinity war eye patch was short-lived as the god of thunder quickly runs into the notorious klepto maniacal prosthetic collector rocket who naturally had an eye replacement for the Thunderer one that he should have rinsed before he put it in Thor's classic look for Marvel Comics is sleeveless if you want to be the god of thunder you want to show off the big guns from an armor standpoint it might not be the most ideal setup but fantasy armor has always been more about what looks cool than what actually protects just ask any fantasy warrior woman character of the last few decades the only thing their armor protects from is a sensor for the most part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe the Mighty Thor has also invited us to the gun show with plenty of sleeveless options in his wardrobe of armor Thor rocked the sleeveless look throughout most of Ragnarok and all the way to the trip to need a pelear where Thor replaced that weapon that his sister broke and then made one of the most epic entrances ever showing up to turn the tide in the battle raging in Wakanda that's how you do fashionably late speaking a fashion there was another wardrobe decision made in post fighting the hordes of fan OSes serious business and it was decided that it needed some serious armed armor which were added onto Hemsworth and posted digitally handy too with the rocket hanging off your shoulder because those claws are probably uncomfortable there's an entire generation of cinematic Batman's Batman cinematic depictions of Batman where the medicine crime fighter of the night not only didn't have superpowers he also didn't have a regular power most of us have that's the ability to turn our heads to the left or right without turning our entire body adopting a superhero costume to the big screen has always been a road filled with potholes will the costume that looks kind of silly on the pages of the comic looked ridiculous and live action can you create a costume that has a reasonable range of motion so that it looks like the superhero really can't fight crime in the crime-fighting outfit more importantly especially if you're the actor can the actor and stunt performers survive the long day's in that suit jumping around and looking cool these are the hurdles that just about every superhero movie is faced when it came to black Pan they're in civil war the Russo brothers were concerned that they couldn't quite capture what made Black Panthers suit so special with its woven sci-fi metal makeup so even though there was a suit on set that the stunt performer and bozeman wore it was just for reference purposes his costume was CGI the entire movie ah the winsome wasp it took a lot of false starts for the founding member of the Avengers and the one who gave them their name in the comics to finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and she has yet to really officially joined the Avengers just joined in the way that if someone brought you through a portal to fight Thanos you were an Avenger that day but she did get to call Steve Rogers cap the shrinky-dinky hero with the buzzy wings and wrist blasters had to wait until the second ant-man movie to suit up just in time to get dusted by Thanos said it is half the universe ending snap once as she did get a proper introduction in action as the wasp we were treated to a properly epic battle where we got to see the advantages of being size adjustable taking place in the back kitchen of a fancy restaurant restaurant fights are an action movie staple like hitting Apple carts and alleys during car chases in order to pull off a fight that complex where she moves from Evangeline Lilly sighs - Lilly pew ssin sized and then back again required the kind of control of an environment that comes from rendering the whole thing in CGI Paul Rudd is a mystery all unto himself he's everywhere being charming and funny and seeming to have found the same fountain that Dick Clark slept in four years that kept him the same age forever the actor better known for his comedy roles was a surprise that made immediate sense when it was announced that he would be Scott Lang the new ant-man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who better than Rudd to take on the much maligned superhero with the power to get small no one's laughing when he gets big though Wow Lang is unlike some of his teammates for the most part Lang's costume is a practical one including his ant themed helmet all except the lenses on the eyes like you're audible that uses dated hipster slang and wears those transitions sunglasses that never seem to lighten up all the way Scott Lang's lenses had to adjust their red tint because as the director Peyton Reed wistfully told Rud during the DVD commentary Paul you have really expressive eyes he really does in order to control how much of that expressiveness the audience sees especially when Scott is reacting to his world grow and shrink before him the lenses are outed in after the fact we can't guarantee that Rudd won't ask you to pull his finger like your ah don't go way back when there was a Super Bowl halftime show that featured a former member of a boy band and a member of the Jackson family it was a seemingly normal kind of affair pop stars that were just one tick past their peak lip-synching to truncated versions of their most popular songs all to some awkward choreography and sometimes there's a drunk shark only this time something went wrong and when a part of Janet Jackson's costume was removed more was on display than the NFL or its broadcasters bargained for this led to the term wardrobe malfunction as a shorthand for what a costume reveals more than intended a superhero's costume can leave little to the imagination no matter who the hero is sometimes that's part of the appeal but looking up behind-the-scenes photos Twitter user Toki Ned noticed that a little too much was revealed about Loki or specifically Loki actor Tom Hiddleston which led to the crotch part of his costume being smoothed out in post-production Thor is the god of thunder but it turns out that maybe it was Loki that was god of hammers there's a convention in the layout of the comic book when a character or a team makes an entrance or introduces themselves they get what's called a splash page where the one image takes up one or two pages of the comic usually with a big stylized word balloon with a character or team's name for bonus points they're usually standing on something or someone the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gone out of its way to simulate the splash page introduction in the movies there's the epic coming together of the two opposing sides at the airport in Civil War and these slightly more awkward attack that opens age of Ultron the granddaddy of MCU hero splash shots however is the rotating 360 shot in the first Avengers movie as the team finally comes together to fight the Chitauri and Loki as they invade New York it was truly epic to see our heroes finally assemble even if we had to wait another seven years to hear the words Assemble only it wasn't all of them and it was in Atlanta not New York cap Hawkeye Black Widow and Thor were there but Hulk and Iron Man were drawn in as well as the rest of these slowly being attacked in New York [Music] those are some of the instances of CGI that might have slipped by in the battle between which is better practical or digital effects it's become increasingly clear that it's a combination of both that helped make a movie seamless and spectacular what are some of your favorite hidden effects in Marvel movies let us know in the comments and while you're
