have you ever asked yourself the question how many species of animal are on the earth scientists say there's about eight point seven million Wow that's quite a lot but check this out only 14% of the total number have been discovered humans may have explored most of the planet but about 86 percent of animal species are still waiting to be found who would have thought tons of unknown species live in the depths of the Mariana Trench deep in the Amazon rainforest or in the deepest and darkest caves and many of these creatures look completely alien with that said join us as we explore a new chapter of the animal kingdom Mollet Ekta fish let's start out our list strong with an alien like fish that somehow managed to hide from scientists for the past several decades the Mollet Ekta fish was discovered by Mary Ann Nygaard and peers in 2017 for a fish that these researchers say is reclusive it's a massive creature also known as an ocean sunfish the mullet Ekta weighs two tons and can grow to be 15 feet long the fish prefers colder and deeper waters and can be found near new zealand australia and southern chile the hood wicker sunfish then is a perfect case of a massive creature staying out of the spotlight and surprising marine biologist with its alien-esque appearance lassie Ogun --this Dyneema the lassie ogen --this dynamo has a similar story though it's a much smaller dish than the mullet Ekta this curious critter was discovered in 2015 often the northern water of the Gulf of Mexico it looks like an abstract painting of a fish with long whiskers protruding from its upper lip researchers discovered three lazon Golda's didymus living 1,500 meters below water the largest of which was 95 millimeters in length while not physically as frightening as the mullet Ekta this fish offers another look into the diversity of creatures living in the depths of the ocean pseudo lapras sweary speaking of the ocean depths in 2017 mackenzie Gehringer and piers found a fish living in the deepest watery abyss the marianas snail fish was x-rayed by a camera trap located five miles underwater where the pressure is 1,000 times greater than it is on the surface the Marianas snailfish is bright pink and not especially pretty to look at but it is currently the only fish known to live as deep beneath the water as it does Aereo Vixia gryffindor i let's take a break from the ocean though and move back to dry land to meet an exceptional insect the airy Vixia Gryffindor I was named by researchers Javed Hamed and Rajah Rasheed Halabi two brilliant biologists with a passion for the Harry Potter series in 2016 these two were exploring the diversity hotspot that is west gut and found a spider that looked like an ancient witch's hat the spider is seven millimeters in length and uses its brown exterior to hide from predators Hamed and collip took one look at the spider saw the alien hat like protrusion on its back and knew that their love for Harry Potter had finally found its way into their work thank you superb bird-of-paradise there aren't just strange spiders in the jungle though Edwin's shells and Timothy layman discovered a new variation of the famous bird of paradise in West Papua Indonesia in 2018 the most well known variations of these birds are now entered at famous for their smiley face coloration and enthusiastic mating dance however the variation that skulls and laymen discovered in Vogel Cop produced different mating calls have slightly different appearances and have turned that smiley face upside down the smile on the superb bird of paradise is in fact a frown and these birds are more likely to circle potential mates when courting than they are to hop they may not be aliens then but this variation on a well-loved bird speaks to the wonders of genetic mutation on our planet blue tarantula there's more than one strange spider in the world though a blue tarantula made headlines in 2017 for its odd coloring after it was discovered in Diana's Kaieteur National Park representatives from the University of Akron Ohio suggest that it may be one of 40 other blue tarantulas in the world but no one can quite agree on what may than the root of the unusual coloring during the daylight hours at least this bright coloration makes it easier to see UFO jellyfish back under the water is another creature that's turned into an internet sensation discovered in 2017 by a team of marine biologists from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration the rapp limited track medusa is a new kind of deep-sea jellyfish affectionately dubbed the UFO jellyfish this undersea alien has two sets of tentacles one upside down and the other right-side up study of this jellyfish is still ongoing but so far the strange orientation of the creature has fascinated laypeople and academics alike at mo Paris lale UFOs aren't the only thing showing up underwater bioluminescence appears in creatures that live deeper under the ocean and the recently confirmed new species of shark has caught the attention of environmental media with its glow-in-the-dark nose originally discovered by Stephen Kajiura and peers in 2000 this shark has only recently been dubbed at a more Tereus lái lái weighing up to two pounds and measuring a foot in length this Rudolf esque shark lives near the northwestern Hawaiian Islands the delay in the sharks classification as a new species Kailua a test came out of the need to compare the species to other Lantern sharks around the world now though the etta purist lái lái can stand on its own as a unique underwater alien neo Palpa Donald Trump I not all names are so lovingly given though such as the case for a micro moth discovered in 2017 the distinct blonde crown on the moths head prompted Vaz Ric Nazari of the University of California to dub the critter neo Papa Donald Trump a Missouri claims that in naming the moth after the 45th President of the United States he can draw political and popular attention to the need to preserve the moths fragile habitat throughout the state of California that said this is a much subtler attempt to garner climate oriented attention that undertaken by Environment Bell when Bell discovered a blind worm that loves to bury its head in the sand off the coast of Panama he enthusiastically dubbed it de morphus Donald Trump I intent on drawing comparisons between the worms blindness and the politicians inability to acknowledge the threat of climate change scaleless black fish on a less political note comes a newly discovered fish that is both tiny and terrifying the scaleless black fish appeared in scientific records in 2015 when it was identified by a CSIRO research team near the Australian coastline the Commonwealth scientific and industrial research organisations team headed by Ian Suthers found the fish where they least expected it near an underwater volcanic range where the water is usually considered too warm to comfortable for similar species of fish the ways in which the scaleless black fish has adapted to its unusual habitat don't necessarily make it an alien but when compared to others of its species it's clearly one of a kind ninja lanternshark another unique fish made an appearance in 2015 - named by Jaws author Peter Benchley the atom of porous bench Levi's has black skin massive eyes and bioluminescent genes that allow parts of it to glow in the dark that Latin name isn't the nomenclature most in the scientific community are familiar with though Vickie Vasquez who helped discover the new species consulted her eight-year-old cousins in order to find a more casual name by which to refer to the creature after taking a look at her pictures these cousins deemed the shark the super ninja shark a name which has now been altered to ninja lanternshark like some other Lantern sharks the ninja Lantern shark can grow up to half a metre in length and can be found off the coast of Central America it's unusual name as just one of the features that make it a highlight on this list meredith Bubo back on dry land and in Australia there's another strange spider waiting in the depths of the Outbacks ecosystem peacock jumping spiders sound terrifying at first but as a matter of fact these spiders are rather small males grow up to 4.1 millimeters in length whereas females max out at 5.11 millimetres these spiders make it big in headlines though in 2017 when Georgian Oh two shared photos of the males trying to win over females with their flamboyant courtship dances OH - originally discovered the species in 2005 but only recently have the peacock jumping spiders become better known yeti crap the yeti crab also made an appearance in 2005 discovered by Bob Ferran Huck and the rest of the crew of the submarine Alvin this crab has adapted a curious biological feature that helps it combat the cult its front legs are absolutely covered with fur at 15 centimeters in length this crab uses its hairy legs to keep itself warm in the waters of the Pacific Antarctic ridge near Easter Island without eyes the crap has to rely on sensory input it receives from this fur in order to navigate and keep itself safe from predators talk about a strange underwater creature peekaboo spider durjan oh - makes a reappearance on this list of alien-like creatures with his discovery of another unique spider he released pictures of what he calls the peekaboo spider in 2016 which he found on a camping trip in the Australian wilderness this spider is another with a unique courtship dance it waives its paddles or legs at aggressive females and mates with those females that don't attack it that may seem like a hit-or-miss strategy to the rest of us but for the peekaboo spider mating makes the dance a risk worth taking sine Allah feeis Pink Floyd aye last but certainly not least comes a truly remarkable shrimp named after an equally remarkable band discovered in 2017 the Sinhala fest Pink Floyd eye is a bright pink shrimp that can kill with sound that is to say when the shrimp snaps its largest claw shut it generates enough sonic energy to stun or kill nearby prey Arthur anchor for the Universidade federal de Vos in Brazil and his peers embraced their inner music fans upon the shrimp's discovery and remembering when Pink Floyd was accused of killing all of the fish in a nearby pond with their music figured that the affiliation was an appropriate one so are these new discoveries aliens natives who knows these 15 out-of-this-world animals have been discovered within the past several years
