everyone wants to own a pet to be proud of but when they've overstayed their welcome think twice before you release them into the wild they may cause more damage in the outside world than they ever could inside your home and while you mull over the potential dangers these abandoned pets could cause click on the subscribe button we'll keep feeding you a shocking information and shelter you with life altering videos fish seem like the easiest animals to buy and keep you pick them up from the pet store and you basically keep them in a small water filled bag until you reach your home then you can set them in a small bowl on the kitchen counter sprinkle in some flakes of food each day and say you're the perfect pet owner the majority of fish actually grow throughout their lifetime and it isn't the size of their bowl or the tank that determines their own body size rather it's the water quality so if your goldfish is particularly scrawny it might be the h2o you're keeping it submerged in but don't go freeing your fish to cleaner waterways at the moment because there have been tales of goldfish growing to unimaginable sizes in Lake Tahoe an 18 inch long goldfish that was almost 5 pounds was pulled out near a school of its fellow invasive brethren and near the end of 2012 Park Rangers around Colorado's Thunderbird Lake had to locate and extract nearly 2300 goldfish since goldfish ancestry originates in Japan there are not many sea life that have a natural taste for them in North America or other parts of the world since there's less of a food chain in effect to keep them in check in these non-native environments the goldfish will out-compete other similar sized fish in their vicinity throwing the entire biome out of whack a similarly harmless household pet that's also equally dangerous to the outside world is the ferret originally from the Middle East ferrets were first domesticated to protect households from rodents and to hunt for rabbits the increased ferret population in the Azores and in Scotland have helped to shrink the amount of birds found in those places and they've introduced more instances of find tuberculosis in both areas and if you have a higher population in your neck of the woods that's probably because ferrets tend to give birth to between 9 to 15 offspring depending on the location and those babies reach sexual maturity within the following year attempts to trap ferrets can be difficult in that ferrets can migrate up to around 28 miles away from threatening areas and weather scientists develop a trapping system or try infecting a population with canine distemper virus the affected ferret population may leave but they'll likely return to their areas some sources say that pet ferrets wouldn't survive long if released into the wild but others say that the possibility for survival is out there while wild ferrets may only live to be between two to four years old those kept in captivity can have up to a 14 year lifespan like a kind of rodent dog so consider this timeline if you're thinking of investing in a ferret as a pet this all sounds overwhelming but the good thing is their main food source in the wild is the rabbit while these animals might look cute and seem harmless their power to duplicate themselves exponentially can prove to be really damaging to local environments only Antarctica and Asia haven't experienced major rabbit population booms Asia should consider itself lucky that it didn't have any bunny horror stories like Australia in 1859 a man named Thomas Austin had settled down under from Britain he missed his home and in order to make the area feel more quaint and British he decided to add two dozen rabbits to his farmland his gray rabbits got lucky with the local rapid population and within 40 years their numbers had multiplied to the point that hunting 2 million of the cute little hoppers on a yearly basis wouldn't cause much of a decrease in the amount of rabbit sightings by locals there were so many bunnies that Australia's soil was permanently damaged across the continent from the amount of burrows and feeding on grasses leading to a massive die-off of other animals who depended on this grassland for survival with these other animals out of the picture though that probably allowed for scavengers like mice and rats to survive and thrive the black rat which city dwellers likely complain about seeing all over garbage piles and and subway systems originated in the jungles of Asia this was before it seemingly started hitching rides on ships and getting distributed around the world starting around the year 100 AD the fact that they started out in a tropical climate and quickly found ways to survive in the high populated in rural areas of just about every city in the world shows just how adaptable these pests are and since they can be kept in cages many people the world over like to have rats as no-frills pets well it's nice to have a creature to call your own please don't let them loose if you get tired of looking after them especially since rats help spread the bubonic plague by bringing it from ship to ship and port to port but the rats and mice sold in your local pet store hail from generations of domesticated rodents their white physical markings or fully white coats make them stick out like spotlights and larger animals will feed on any unassuming rat lost on his way out west now if you're looking for a way to control a local population of rats you can just as easily feed them to a Python but there's a reason you don't see the city of New York releasing serpents in their subway systems not only do snakes tend to scare people but a loose Python can be dangerous to humans anywhere you go so if you have the desire to buy an exotic pet like this for your snake charming act this has become a huge problem in places like Florida the state is practically overrun with invasive species where nearly 85% of all alien animals taking over local environments come from pet owners who decided to drop off their animal at a place like the Everglades and just say scram that National Park is basically in a state of emergency with fugitive pythons and boa constrictors the giant snakes originally home to jungles halfway across the world have now made southern Florida their home hunting small mammal species of rabbits and foxes to extinction and it's not only the cube mammals that are in trouble in this area Burmese pythons can reach a length of 20 feet and they're incredibly comfortable in swampy places and they'll eat anything they see including the many alligators inhibiting that area with a projected 30,000 pythons lurking in the semi-aquatic landscape of southern Florida even the alligators should be worried if Florida is that desperate though perhaps they should try introducing cane toads to their swampy habitats okay maybe not to fend off the giant snakes but perhaps were fighting the smaller invasive animals that have been neglected and dumped around their state cane toads are native to the humid lush rainforests of South and Central America they grow up to around 12 inches long and they have grotesquely huge mouths perfect for eating bugs the only problem is once they start eating they don't seem to stop Hawaii learned this the hard way when they introduced the animal to their islands as a means to ward off pests threatening their valuable sugarcane crops when introducing a giant toad that kills off many of the threats to the valuable crop it seemed like a miracle an all natural alternative to pesticides unfortunately the massive cane toads also tended to eat anything else that crossed their paths with no other animal on their level in the local food chain they threatened to endanger their whole surrounding environment another problem with these critters is the toxic oil they secrete which is poisonous to most animals that come in contact with it including humans some poor folks were reported to have died from eating the toads eggs even something far more beautiful can become as irritating and environmentally damaging in the late 1800s residents of New York City learned the hard way when starlings infested the island of Manhattan sure they sound beautiful but their release wasn't performing any kind of service other than beautifying the neighborhood according to the guy who did the releasing he was simply a fan of William Shakespeare who had poetically referenced starlings a couple centuries earlier within 40 years however the starlings weren't so appreciated from their initial home in New York Central Park they massively increased their numbers and by the end of the 1920s had migrated as far west as the Mississippi a decade later the Starling migrations were a million strong and they'd reached the west coast of North America making many birds homeless who'd otherwise call that area home for thousands of years the total damage resulting from the starlings century plus squatting experience is believed to have accounted to over 1 billion 27 million dollars plus the 200 mm starlings currently estimated to be living in the United States are still multiplying at this point we'd prefer people freed a bunch of parrots at least if we ran into one of those they'd talk back to us according to the wild parrot trust parrots that were sold to pet owners likely come from a long line of tropical breeds used to being domestic animals they don't have the natural skills to forage for themselves and they rely on their owners to survive even if you think your parrot will be happier in the wild because they just keep talking back at you or calling you names consider the fact that maybe it's not general captivity that's the problem maybe they just don't like you that much beyond the fact that many environments available to parrots in North America and Europe aren't suitable for the tropical birds poachers might just seize them for their feathers freeing your parrots would likely just be a different kind of hell for these dependant animals instead if you have a parrot and don't know how to make it happy contact the wild parrot trust or look for an online resource that will provide you with bird rescue services otherwise you can try to provide the parrot with a room or enclosed area with as much opportunity for flight as possible now you know about these animals that are better left inside than outside think twice before you buy a new animal to domesticate that's all for this video come on back to the richest for more cautionary and informative videos like this one see you next time
